ING SPONSORS NEW MINIMUM WAGE BILL
OUTRAGED OVER TRUMP? DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! So yeah, this Friday Baby Donald Trump will actually take the oath of office as President of the United States. But he and his Republican toadies in Congress have been busy since Election Day, smashing civil liberties, healthcare, environmental protection efforts and who knows what else. Here’s a short list of just what they’ve done in the last week: • Senate Republicans voted to rollback numerous Affordable Care Act provisions, including protections for people with pre-existing conditions. • House of Representatives approved the REINS Act, which requires Congressional approval all new regulations. This effectively destroys the federal government’s regulatory process, which is a massive windfall for big polluters and dirty industries nationwide.
• During his Senate confirmation hearing, Secretary of State nominee/Exxon stooge Rex Tillerson refused to condemn Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s murderous anti-drug war. • Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions showed off his painful record of fighting against civil rights during his Senate confirmation hearing. And that list doesn’t even include a thousand other offenses against humanity that Trump has committed, including his recent beyond-insulting press conference, in which he denied it was possible for him as president to have any conflicts of interests (a morally bankrupt assertion), then put forward a sham proposal to deal with the massively unconstitutional fact that his Trump empire accepts payments from foreign governments (were Congress run by honest people instead of the craven Republicans in charge now, that would be an impeachable offense, effective on the very first day Trump takes office). Look, I know all this is scary and infuriating, and it’s all likely to get worse in the coming weeks, months and years, but now’s the time to fight back. If any of this outrages you, call the Washington offices of Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz and Representative Tulsi Gabbard and tell them. Seriously, they WANT you to call and voice your concerns. It’s very easy, and often you’ll just speak into a voicemail recorder. But calls on this stuff (and whatever’s yet to come) matter. Here’s how to reach them: • SENATOR MAZIE HIRONO: 202-224-6361 • SENATOR BRIAN SCHATZ: 202-224-3934 • REPRESENTATIVE TULSI GABBARD: 202-225-4906

SCHATZ LIKES MATTIS How Democrats in Congress should react to Trump is being hotly debated right now. One school is hard-line resistance–take a page from the Republicans’ playbook and obstruct, obstruct, obstruct. Give no ground to Trump on anything, and fight every appointment, nominee and bill that comes from him. Others, like Senator Schatz, seem unwilling to oppose Trump on everything. Specifically, I’m talking about James Mattis, the retired Marine Corps general that Trump nominated to be Secretary of Defense (though federal law prohibits a military officer from serving as Defense Secretary until he or she has been retired for seven years, Congress last week passed a special waiver for Mattis, since he only retired in 2013). On Jan. 13, Schatz announced that he would vote to confirm Mattis. Schatz gave

The Hawaii state Legislature convened its 2017 session on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Among the bills that will hopefully survive this term is a one from Maui Rep. Kaniela Ing, D–South Maui. That bill increases Hawaii’s minimum wage to $15/hour by 2019 and $22/hour by 2022 (the state’s current minimum wage is $9.25/hour and is supposed to rise to $10.10/hour next year). “Working families are struggling, so we as legislators have a moral obligation to act,” Ing said in a Jan. 10 news release. “The evidence shows that raising the minimum wage to at least $15 an hour is the single most impactful policy for Hawaii’s most vulnerable.” According to the bill, the minimum wage will rise in the following manner: to $12.50/ hour in 2018, $15/hour in 2019, $19/hour in 2020, $21/hour in 2021 and finally $22/ hour in 2022. This is because of the state’s higher requirements for a living wage. “According to data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the living wage for an adult working full-time in Honolulu is $14.92,” states the bill. “The living wage for that same adult nearly doubles with the addition of a child. Due to the large disparity between the current minimum wage and a living wage, many individuals work two or more jobs to maintain a basic standard of living for themselves and their families.” But more importantly, in my opinion, Ing’s bill eliminates the state’s wage exemption for tipped employees. Finally–assuming this bill passes, of course–there will be just one minimum wage for all employees, regardless of whether they receive tips. The practice of restaurants paying their employees less because they receive tips is
a national disgrace–especially given that most restaurant employees around the country earn just the federal minimum wage, which is pathetically low. “Most people in the industry get paid the federal tipped minimum wage, which is $2.13 an hour,” Saru Jayaraman, the director of the Food Labor Research Center at UC Berkeley, told me last year. “That means they get a paycheck that says, ‘This is not a paycheck,’ because all their wages went to taxes. It’s crazy. The two-tiered wage system is also really hard to enforce. It’s the most absurd thing to enforce. It’s ridiculous!” Ing’s bill also includes a provision that “Each county shall have the power to establish wages for employees employed within the county at rates that are higher than those” listed in the bill.
James Mattis
multiple reasons for this–most notably, though, was his view that Mattis would act as a check against Trump’s nasty, thoughtless impulses. “General Mattis is a thoughtful, articulate, well-read leader that has enjoyed the respect of civilian military leaders on a bipartisan basis,” Schatz said in a news release from his office. “He recognizes that national security requires more than a strong defense and the importance of empowering those working in diplomacy and development. He understands issues affecting civil-military relations and is resolved to address them. His commitment to the Constitution and international legal norms is what we would demand of any civilian secretary. But more than anything, he has proven he can moderate the president-elect on even his most radical views, and that is the kind of influence we need in the next senior national security team.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

who wanted to share her outrage with other women the night after Donald Trump was elected president. She had few options in this remote island community, so she went on Facebook and wrote the first thing that came to mind: I think we should march. Four weeks later, organizers credited Shook’s quiet plea with igniting what could be the largest demonstration in the nation’s capital related to a presidential election. “I didn’t have a plan or a thought about what would happen,” Shook told Reuters. “I just kept saying, I think we should march.” After a bruising election campaign marked by Trump’s comments on women, organizers say his presidency could threaten access to women’s healthcare, erode protection against sexual violence and roll back aid to struggling mothers. “I was in such shock and disbelief that this type of sentiment could win,” said

Maui residents feeling politically helpless can have their voices heard by participating in the Women’s March on Maui. The peaceful demonstration will coincide with the national Women’s March on Washington on Saturday, Jan. 21–one day after the official United States Presidential Inauguration. The Women’s March on Maui will kick off at 8am at the University of Hawaii Maui College front lawn. There will be a moment of silence for women’s equality that will occur at the same time as the national moment of silence, led by feminist icon Gloria Steinem. The demonstration will feature an opening ceremony and pule with Lei‘ohu Ryder. The free event will include a solidarity march and sign waving, inspirational music and messages and donations to Maui Foodbank. There also will be action team sign up opportunities. Earlier this week, radio host Renee De Ahl invited the public to drop into her radio show Women Matters to chat about why they are participating in the march. De Ahl said she’s marching because she’s a multi-cultural woman who has fought her entire life to be accepted for who and what she is. “I have struggled to hold on to my HUMAN right to be in control of my own life, my body, and my equal right to financial gain,” De Ahl said. “The Women of Maui and women around the world have fought and struggled as I have for rights that we were born with, that we shouldn’t be still now struggling to keep. We need to be HEARD! The movement starts NOW!” Organizers of the Women’s March on
Maui encourage the public to bring the aloha and be seen and counted in a global solidarity movement proclaiming the importance of social and economic equality for all; it’s an opportunity to speak out for the protection of all rights, for free speech, safety, and health for all our citizens. The Maui march will take place simultaneously with hundreds of others events across the country and around the globe. The Women’s March on Washington is currently projecting 200,000 attendees, including a long list of celebrities. America Ferrera will serve as chair of the Artist Table, with stars including Chelsea Handler, Amy Schumer, Katy Perry, Scarlett Johansson, Cher and more as participants, according to an Entertainment Weekly report. “Since the election, so many fear that their voices will go unheard,” Ferrera said in a statement. “As artists, women and most importantly dedicated Americans, it is critical that we stand together in solidarity for the protection, dignity and rights of our communities. Immigrant rights, worker rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, racial justice and environmental rights are not special interests, they affect us all and should be every American’s concern.” The Women’s March on Maui runs 8-11am. There is no cost to participate; however, tax deductible donations gratefully accepted with proceeds supporting The Safe Keiki Project. The Maui march is sponsored by the Human Services Program and the Malama Lahui Kanaka Club at UHMaui College. According to a Dec. 5, 2016 Reuters report, the inspiration for the Women’s March on Washington was a Facebook post by Maui resident Teresa Shook,

TOO-MUCH-REALITY TV Russian producers are planning the sofar-ultimate survivors’ show–in the Siberian wilderness for nine months (temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit), with 30 contestants selected after signing liability waivers that protect the show even if someone is raped or murdered. (Police may come arrest the perpetrators, but the producers are not responsible for intervening.) The show (Game2: Winter) will be telecast live, around the clock, beginning July 2017 via 2,000 cameras placed in a large area full of bears and treacherous forest. Producers told Siberian Times in December that 60 prospects had already signed up for the last-person-standing prize: the equivalent of $1.6 million (only requirements: be 18 and “sane”). Bonus: The production company’s advertising lists the “dangerous” behaviors they allow, including “fighting,” “murder,” “rape,” “smoking.”

With car-camel collisions increasing in Iran’s two southern provinces, an Iranian government ministry is in the process of issuing identification cards to each camel, supposedly leading to outerwear license “plates” on each of the animals. Authorities told the Islamic Republic News Agency the registration numbers are needed if an accident victim needs to report the camel or to help trace smugglers. (No actual U.S.-style license plates on camels have yet made the world’s news photographs.)
BEST DRUG MANUFACTURERS EVER Martin Shkreli became the Wall Street bad boy in 2015 when his company Turing Pharmaceuticals bought the right to market the lifesaving drug Daraprim and promptly raised its typical price of $18 a pill to $750, but in November, high schoolers in the chemistry lab at Sydney Grammar in Australia created a molecular knockoff of Daraprim for about $2 a tablet. Their sample of “pyrimethamine” (Daraprim’s chemical name) was judged authentic by a University of Sydney chemistry professor. Daraprim, among other uses, fights deadly attacks on immune systems, such as for HIV patients.
GAZING UPON NATURE AS NATURE CALLS To serve restroom users in a public park in China’s Hunan Province’s picturesque Shiyan Lake area, architects gave users in toilet cubicles a view of the forest through ceiling-tofloor windows. To discourage sightseers who believe the better view is not from the cubicles but into them, the bottom portion, up to the level of the toilet, is frosted–though that stratagem probably blurs only a pair of legs, seated. (CNN reported in October that China has at least one other such restroom, in Guilin province, viewing distant mountains.)

WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS Officials of the Ulm Minster in Ulm, Germany, the world’s tallest church (530 feet high), said in October that they fear it might eventually be brought down–by visitors who make the long trek up with a full bladder and no place to relieve themselves except in dark alcoves, thus eroding the structure’s sandstone. A building preservation representative also cited vomit in the alcoves, perhaps as a result of the dizzying height of the view from the top. (News of the Weird has reported on erosion damage to a bridge, from spitting, in Mumbai, India, and at the Taj Mahal, from bug droppings.)
GREAT WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT The Dubai-based Gulf News reported in November that 900 Kuwaiti government workers had their pay frozen during the current investigation into no-shows, including one man on the payroll (unidentified) who reportedly had not actually worked in 10 years. Another, who had been living abroad for 18 months while drawing his Kuwaiti pay, was reduced to half-pay, but insisted he had asked several times for assignments but was told nothing was available. (Gulf News reported that the 10year man is appealing the freeze!)
NEWS YOU CAN USE German Horst Wenzel, “Mr. Flirt,” fancies himself a smooth-talking maestro, teaching mostly wealthy but tongue-tied German men lessons (at about $1,500 a day!) in how to approach women–but this year has decided to “give back” to the community by offering his expertise pro-bono to lonely Syrian and Iraqi refugees who have flooded the country. At one class in Dortmund in November, observed by an Associated Press reporter, most “students” were hesitant, apparently divided between the embarrassed (when Wenzel informed them it’s “normal” to have sex on the first or second date) and the awkwardly confident (opening line: “I love you. Can I sleep over at your place?”). But, advised Wenzel, “Don’t tell (a German woman) that you love (her) at least for the first three months (because) German women don’t like clinginess.”
UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS A 24-year-old woman who worked at a confectionary factory in Fedortsovo, Russia, was killed in December when she fell into a vat of chocolate. (Some witnesses said she was pouring flour when she fell; others say she fell while trying to retrieve her dropped cellphone.) An a 24-year-old man was decapitated in London in August when he leaned too far out the window of one train and struck an extension on a passing train. Next to the window he leaned from was a sign warning people not to stick their heads out. ■

h Brah, I get that you’re homeless and you could use some kindness. But I made the mistake of being friendly, so you moved in with bags of stuff in the bushes and left piles of your plants and more stuff all over the place. Then you drank and got obnoxious and belligerent. That scared away customers. Politely asking you to move on didn’t work. Being firm didn’t work. Getting nasty didn’t work. Calling the police finally worked. But I see you’ve moved in down the block. Please go home to your family, which apparently lives nearby. Oh, wait–you probably can’t go home. They probably called the police, too. I feel bad for you but I won’t try being friendly again. Sorry, brah. ■

The theater faced a decline in the 1980s. Then in the mid-1990s, there was a community effort to save the Iao. Now it’s a flourishing performing arts center. “It has so many things going on,” said Maui On-
Stage board member Randol Leach. “It’s part of Wailuku town–it’s a hub, a focal point, which is wonderful.” According to the Iao website, the theater has undergone a million dollar-plus renovation; and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior, helping make it the cornerstone of theater on Maui. But Leach credits Alexis and Steven with much of the theater’s success. “What they

The following year, Steven played the lead in The Sound of Music. “After that, it was clear to me that I wanted to be in theater and on stage,” he said Steven applied to the Boston Conservatory of Music, which recently merged with Berklee College of Music. Shortly after Alexis and Steven were hired, Leach had a conversation with then-theater president Tony Lavoy. “We are so lucky,” Leach said to Lavoy. “Alexis and Steven really know what they are doing. They can do it all.” “Well, Randol,” Lavoy responded. “We hired real professionals.” “They are Broadway caliber on Maui,” Leach said. “This is a first-class operation.” Some individuals with an artistic nature have a difficult time with business and finances. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Alexis and Steven. - Alexis Dascoulias “The theater is a nonprofit organization and most nonprofits struggle with fund-raising, making payroll and all that,” Leach said. “When she took over the theater it was struggling. The 50-year-old can learn from the 5-year-old just as much as the 5-yearold can learn from the 50-year-old.” “That’s what we enjoy the most is seeing people learn,” Alexis said. Steven and Alexis are also co-founders of Camp CenterStage on Maui, a camping program for kids who love theater, music, dancing and singing. The camp’s tagline is Camp CenterStage: achieving excellence through the arts. “We use the arts as the basis to build character and build leadership skills and get young people to understand the importance of community and providing for each other,” Alexis said. “It is not about, ‘I want the solo’ all the time. We’re not a make-your-kid-a-star program.” “For myself, for Maui, for Hawaii, we’re so lucky they are part of the Maui ohana,” Leach said. “They get the kids acting and that helps their self esteem, helps them become wonderful people. They get a lot of happiness and fulfillment from seeing the fruits of their labor, how they’ve affected so many Alexis and Steven people–and so many young people.” For that reason, Steven and Alexis are special, he said. “They don’t accept the way rector, and I’m the musical director.” things they are. And they have enriched thousands of people’s lives. That’s an inspiration.” “We love working together,” Alexis said. Then under a giggle she added: “We don’t share an office.”

Hampshire. She moved up, becoming the managing director and eventually the executive director. Steven got his theater start in high school, playing music in the orchestra; at the time, he never thought of himself as an actor or singer. His perception changed when he was playing in the orchestra for Annie Get Your Gun (a show both Alexis and Steven starred in at the Iao in 2015).

Walking up to the theater, you know you’re somewhere special the minute you see the vintage box office. The Iao has the feel of an old movie house. Yet when you step inside and spot the vast stage, you quickly realize it’s a home for live productions. Alexis and I sit at a small table in the downstairs lobby and Steven pulls another table over and joins us. We’re immediately greeted by their dog; Maui OnStage is definitely a family affair. Steven and Alexis came to Maui from New Hampshire and have been running Maui OnStage for nearly a decade. When asked what brought them to Hawaii, the answer is simple: Maui. “We had visited many times,” Alexis said. “Once we decided to move here we plotted a three-year plan.” “She didn’t give you the backstory, which I think is a compelling part,” Steven then said. “About a year before, Alexis and her mother were doing a show together. When the rehearsal ended, she went her way, her mother went hers. And her mother was crossing the street and got killed. That kind of changes your perspective on how quickly life can change.” The couple said they put their decision to the rocking chair test. “When you’re old and you’re sitting on your rocking chair on your porch, we’d rather say, ‘Wow, that was really fun. I’m glad we tried that,’ versus saying, ‘I wonder what would have happened if we had,’” Alexis said. In the midst of the three years, the couple was planning a vacation on Maui. About two months before their trip, a friend was visiting the island and saw a post about a job opening for executive director of Maui OnStage. Their friend said (jokingly), “Wouldn’t it be funny if you did what you were doing now but on Maui?” “We didn’t think it was a joke,” Alexis said. Alexis–who at the time was executive director of a theater in New Hampshire– submitted her resume but did not receive a response. Shortly thereafter during the couple’s vacation, she called and asked if she could meet someone on the board and tour the theater. “I met with the board and spent a couple of hours with the people that were here already,” Alexis said. “We came back a night or two later and watched a rehearsal. About a month later, I had a follow up interview and they offered me the position shortly thereafter, on my birthday.” With their passion for theater, it’s no surprise to learn that Alexis and Steven fell in love on the stage. In the late 1980s, Alexis and Steven were acquaintances, working together at a theater in New Hampshire. “One day, I told her she should audition for Carnival which was being presented at the Seacoast Repertory Theater,” Steven said.
“We both ended up in the show playing opposite one another. That’s how our love affair started.” Alexis has a degree in theater education from the University of New Hampshire. After college, she taught high school for seven years and then went to work as the education director for a professional theater company in New

have done is amazing,” he said. “They’ve upgraded the Iao. It’s now air-conditioned. There are new seats and a new sound system. And it has a great reputation. They have turned around the Iao Theater and made it what it is today. They get all the credit–their leadership.”
The music director told him to sing for Mr. Tilton, the director. “Mr. Tilton had been on Broadway; he had been in South Pacific and The Sound of Music,” Steven explains. Despite the fact that Steven didn’t view himself as a musician, he sang anyway. After he performed, Tilton told him that next year, he was in the

into it, like a scobie, and they look like little pearls. They ferment in the same way that kombucha does. It has a first ferment, then a second ferment where you add your flavors in. As for kombucha, hands down my Ginger Turmeric is the most popular flavor. In fact, I think that one is sold out right now. Cranberry is really nice, too, and it’s a seasonal flavor right now. Pineapple beet is an unusual mix–it’s really good. ” The banana kefir was a total winner for me. I like probiotics, but I don’t love kombucha. I felt like the kefir was a little less sweet and fizzy. Another beverage you have to try while here are the fresh squeezed juices and the turmeric shot, made with honey lemon and cayenne. “We make our own juice,” says Blosser. “We have the Dawn Patrol, the Mean Green, and our Roots and Spice. We bottle them every morning for the grab-and-go section. Everything here is designed to be fast. We also do a turmeric shot. It’s not bottled but it’s in a container in the fridge. Be prepared–it’s really strong and tasty. I love them, I take them all the time.” On South Maui’s Fourth Friday, Fork and Salad gets into the block party by creating a

ne of the newest restaurants to hit Maui is Fork & Salad. A concept dreamed up by the chefs behind Three’s Bar and Grill—Travis Morrin, Jarron Blosser and Cody Christopher— it’s meant to be a lean, mean, salad building machine. Oh, and they do sandwiches too. “We designed this with the idea that you as soon as you meet with one of our salad techs it’s a three-minute process from start to finish,” says Morrin. “We have signature salads, classics or build your own, then you can add your proteins.” Here are the stats: 12 signature salads, 11 dressings, 50 ingredients, seven sandwiches, four fresh pressed juices, six proteins, five leafy green bases, three soups, six Big Wave kombuchas on tap, One Nitro coffee and several beers and wines to choose from. The combinations are limitless. “The sandwiches are awesome,” says Blosser. “The soups are awesome. You can do combos now.You can do a half salad and a soup for the same price, so you have a few
more options. The Big Wave kombucha is doing really well. We have the biggest tap on the island. We have six kombucha, one kefir and one nitro coffee. They change regularly depending on what Big Wave makes. The beer and wine is not our focus, but it’s for the people who would like that, just in case.” The restaurant is where Stella Blues used to be in Azeka Mauka. Fork and Salad has a gorgeous and modern build out. The design is very clean, and welcoming. Blosser, Morrin and Christopher worked on the construction as well as the concept. They built counters, recycling bins, railings, tables and the water station areas themselves. “We wanted to pass the savings onto our customers,” says Christopher. “We kept our start-up costs down, did a lot ourselves. We want people to not have any excuse for not eating healthy!” As you enter the restaurant you approach towards the salad bar, menu boards overhead highlight the different salad bases, sandwiches, soups and pricing. The fresh salad greens are stacked right behind the salad bar, and all of the prepped ingredients like cukes, avo, pineapple, kabocha, chickpeas, red onion, garlic chips, carrots, beets, sprouts–50 in all–are in the bar. Proteins include chicken breast, falafel, ahi belly, seared ahi, poached shrimp and tofu. They also have a category called super finish
to add options like chia, flax or hemp seeds, bee pollen or nutritional yeast for a $1. As you’re greeted you order, then watch the salad come together. You can make any of your salad choices into a wrap, too. “This concept is so new, the first time somebody walked up to the counter, we did not know how that was going to go,” says Blosser. “So it took us about a week to get some systems down to make the salad bar work. This is how we’re filling the bowls, this is how we’re stocking the bar. Finally it fell into place. Honestly, it was a lot easier than Three’s. It’s an eatery. It’s a fast food health food concept. I think people just picked up on it. We’re really happy.” The sandwich menu has been a hit as well, featuring seven sandwiches designed in the 500- to 700-calorie range. I was surprised that the pastrami seasoned ahi was the lowest in calories, at 522. They also have lemon and thyme chicken, falafel and quinoa, roasted eggplant and goat cheese, shrimp and avo and an ahi melt. “The smokey papaya chicken sandwich is our most popular sandwich,” says Morrin. “You can get this with a bowl of chili for two more

bucks. What’s really great about the bread that we use is it comes from Blue Door Bakery. It’s a naturally fermented sourdough focaccia. There’s no yeast, and it’s organic. It’s the best kind of gluten you can put in your body, if you’re down to eat bread. And it’s made fresh daily here in South Maui. All the greens come from Maui, as many ingredients as possible are sourced on Maui, if not from the State of Hawaii. There are just a few small odds and ends–like, for example, the eggs. There are not enough organic eggs locally, so we buy cage-free organic from the Mainland. Everything else comes from Maui and it just tastes good that way.” Fork and Salad had a banana kefir on tap next to the kombuchas. I hadn’t tried a non-dairy kefir before so I asked David Smithey of Big Wave Beverage Co. about it. “Most people think of dairy kefir when they think of kefir, but this is a water-based kefir,” says Smithey. “They are fermented with grains. Well we call them ‘grains’ but they aren’t really grains. It’s a bacteria yeast formation that goes
farmers market and beer garden on their patio. “We partner with Brian from Oko‘a Farms,” says Morrin. “We set up a farmers market at night out on our patio area. He brings down a full spread, all certified organic, from one end of the patio to the other. He brings some really interesting stuff as well as his standard produce and fruits, it’s really amazing. Then we have the beer garden out there, too. We sell $5 Maui draft beers. It’s just a really nice place to hang out and get a salad and a beer on a Friday night and cruise.” Fork and Salad has a phone app, and since using it a few times, it has been my go to way to pick up my salads. You can create your own salad, order up sandwiches and soups, and pay for it all using the phone. Then it will be ready on the side of the register. Skip the line and pick up. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Eclectic Art TALKING STORY WITH MICHAEL PULLIAM ABOUT THE MAUI FRINGE FESTIVAL grants for him to reinvent MacBeth in Haiti, there would never have been a War of the Worlds or Citizen Kane. PHOTO COURTESY MAUI FRINGE FESTIVAL
MT: Tell us a bit more about some of the shows in this years festival. Have you seen them all? MP: Every show is unique and we hope to explore every genre. Game of Thrones: The Musical will make you think of Avenue Q . Old Girls Looking Hot is a socially conscious dramatic musical. Ain’t That Rich is a one-woman tour-de-force that will resonate with our feelings of this inauguration. FADO is an illusion through aerial dance that embraces a Portuguese musical tradition. The festival is a stew of ideas and uncompromised visions.

he Maui Fringe Festival will light up Wailuku this weekend with a three-day exhibition of unique performing arts shows. Brought to life by local playwrights, writers, actors and directors as well as visiting ones, these little plays with big ideas give audiences a taste of creativity that doesn’t normally have an outlet. Michael Pulliam curates and guides the production as the Maui Fringe Festival director, and he took a moment to talk with us about this year’s festival.
MAUITIME: Describe that moment and feeling when you decided to organize a Fringe Festival on Maui. MICHAEL PULLIAM: I’m a writer first and I came to Maui for a sabbatical and found no reason to go home. A friend came to visit and asked what I was going to do on Maui. I said I was thinking about starting a Maui Fringe. He told me that this might be the best idea I’ve ever had. MT: Thank goodness for nosy friends. How long have you been putting the Maui Fringe Festival together?
MT: How do you find inspiration each year? MP: I’m always inspired by the shock of the new–that is what Fringe is. I just love creating a home for new artists and when combined with the paradise of Maui, it seemed like a perfect fit. MT: Give us a heads up on some of the highlights for 2017. MP: I love bringing eclectic art to Maui. We have an R-rated puppet show this year
MT: So how do you find R-rated puppet shows? MP: My favorite part of putting together a Fringe is finding young writers and performers on the internet. There is a worldwide network of independent playwrights touring and bringing fresh new ideas to more than 100 Fringe fests globally every weekend, every year, for 70 years. Sometimes all I have to do is ask, “do you want to come to Maui?” Finding out-of-town shows is easier than finding local shows. The vast Fringe network of shows that can travel in a suitcase is endless. Yet, there are many Fringe suitors and there are at least two festivals happening somewhere every week. I guess I always hope the romance of Maui will sway the choice of producers.
MT: What’s the best way to sample this stew? MP: In my opinion, you have to see at least three or four Fringe shows. It’s like Sundance. Why go all the way to Utah and only catch one movie? MT: What do you hope attendees come away with after being at the festival? MP: My hope with every Fringe is that the people of Maui embrace unknown theater just like indy film. It’s the same, but it’s live theater. Many Fringe performers on Maui have since gone on to film and TV roles. Who doesn’t like to be the friend that discovered a new wine, introduced the family to a new restaurant, posted that great new song, that is Fringe.

It explores wildly inappropriate comedy involving puppets. Featuring Caitlin Collins, Basil Considine, Elizabeth Eschen, Joe Kastner and Angela Walberg. 6:30pm FADO by Maui Aerial Arts. An allfemale cast featuring Heather Booth, Amy Erickson, Clover Love and Lani Thur-Fine explore processes of grief and healing through a dazzling aerial performance. 7:15pm Small Town Lawyer 8pm Game of Thrones: The Musical
MT: With so many acts available, how do you choose what acts get into the Maui Fringe Festival?
9:15pm Me, My Song and I by Malcolm Grissom. Grissom gives a memorable and intense performance in this personal narrative named Critic’s Choice in the Atlanta Fringe Festival.
MP: I don’t choose the shows. We try to take every show. Because I also love the biz side of show biz, I get concerned if I think some plays might not do well financially. A few have passed on the Maui Fringe. I like to be honest and share with the producers what is realistic.
SUNDAY, JAN. 22 1pm Small Town Lawyer
MT: Have you written any screenplays yourself for a Fringe Festival? MP: I performed in the 1996 Chicago Fringe and managed a 1998 San Francisco Fringe location. I love to write, but I also like to provide a play space for artists who fall outside the box. I love the example of Orson Welles. If the Roosevelt federal government hadn’t provided

Not Another Gangster Picture Ben Affleck’s ‘Live By Night’ has great parts but they never connect ★★★★★ Rated R / 129 Min.
B
en Affleck’s fourth film as a director is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s 2012 novel Live By Night, a Prohibition-era gangster drama. Considering that Affleck’s 2007 directorial debut was the extraordinary Gone Baby Gone (also based on a Lehane novel) and that his previous film was the Best Picture winner Argo, my expectations were high for his return behind the camera. Unfortunately, Affleck should have stayed in the director’s chair, embraced nepotism and had his little brother Casey front and center for this one. While Affleck has made a respectable, ambitious work with an expansive storyline, it leaves an indifferent response and suffers mostly by having its director in the starring role. When we meet Affleck’s Joe Coughlin in Boston of 1926, he’s a getaway driver for stickups and, in his words, living like an “outlaw.” Despite the stern warning of his police captain father (played by Brendan Gleeson), Coughlin is having an affair with Emma (Sienna Miller), the mistress of a vicious mobster. This portion of the story is a mere set-up for
a much larger narrative, which expands to Florida and involves local corruption, Cuban nightclubs, the KKK and religious conversion. There are excellent supporting turns by Miller (who’s been on a hot streak lately), Elle Fanning (playing the film’s most complex, tragic figure) and Chris Cooper (top notch as a fed up law enforcer). There’s also Chris Messina, nearly unrecognizable in a De Niro-like transformation and giving a great turn as Coughlin’s right hand man. The casting in this movie is so good, there’s even outstanding turns by Max Casella (formerly Vinnie Delpino on Doogie Howser, MD) and Anthony Michael Hall! Since Coughlin is in every scene and Affleck looks smashing in a fedora, one could accuse this of being a vanity project. Although he’s assembled a top tier collection of actors in support, this feels less like an ensemble and more of The Ben Affleck Show. However, this is among Affleck’s least compelling performances. While in no way a return to the double-whammy embarrassment of starring in both Gigli and Daredevil in the same year, Affleck does his film a major disservice by taking the lead. Coughlin is a haunted former soldier and reluctant killer with a simmering, tormented
Not now–I'm late for my Senate confirmation hearing
conscience. There is nothing in Affleck’s light, far-too-reserved acting that suggests the struggle his character is undertaking. Under his own direction in Argo and especially The Town (still his best movie), Affleck has been exceptional but that’s not the case here. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of Affleck and love the winning streak he’s been on for the past decade. His heartfelt work in Chasing Amy won me over 20 years ago and subsequent turns in Good Will Hunting, Bounce and Changing Lanes were better than merely good. When too many flops, embarrassing hits and obnoxious (and undeserved) media attention threatened to derail his career, Affleck admirably stepped back. Superb character turns in Hollywoodland and Extract led to an unlikely, smashing emergence as a filmmaker. Despite the are-you-kidding-me response
to the initial announcement, Affleck, of all things, turned out to be a terrific Batman. He’s worked hard for his success and I suspect he will survive this setback. I want to give this movie a break, because there are great scenes, more than a few performances worth seeing and the story is very good. There may be too many endings but the final scene is shocking. That said, the many great pieces within the film don’t fully connect. Although it’s been promoted as a shoot-em’ up and Affleck knows how to stage an exciting action sequence, this isn’t an action movie. Lehane’s themes of what makes a criminal and the inner rot within upstanding citizens drives this very long movie. There are good things in Live By Night but it let me down as much as Affleck’s performance lets down his movie. ■

Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’ve heard the adage, “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer,” right? Bullshit–at least this week. You need to get as far away from those you dislike or disagree with, in favor of having some truly sweet moments with those you love, moments they could and would spoil if given the chance. That wise saw intends to protect you by giving you insight into your enemies’ plots against you, but these guys aren’t clever enough to really screw you over, even if they catch you totally by surprise. So ditch them. Go hang, instead, with the people who are really worthy of your time.
you most needed the intoxicating lift of a compliment or some kind of validation, you didn’t get it. This usually sends younger Leos into a temporary spiral of depression or harsh self-criticism. As you get older, however, you learn to provide more and more of your own encouragement. It’s still nice when you get some outside recognition for whatever you’re up to, but you need it less and less. This week, when external validation continues to soar, don’t let your inner strength go soft and flabby from lack of use. Popular acclaim can’t last forever. You’ll want those emotional muscles strong for whenever they get their next workout.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Just keep plugging away at whatever it is you’re working on. Even though it may seem as if you have an interminably long road ahead of you, you’re actually much, much closer to the finish line than you think. The only problem is you won’t know how close you are until you actually cross the thing. So all you can really do for now is to keep inching forward and not give up. It’s totally an act of faith, and especially of self-belief. But luckily you, dreamy Pisces, because of your many acts of wellmeaning self-delusion, are eminently suited for it.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Despite everything else going on, this is a good week for celebration. That means it’s time to release the party animal I know (or at least suspect) is hidden beneath your pragmatic exterior. Most of the year you’re like an industrious and indefatigable ant, but right now you need to be the carefree grasshopper. After all, what’s all that hard work for, unless it occasionally earns you a guilt-free vacation, of sorts? You could have a blast this week, if you let yourself. Are you so set in your ways that you’d deny yourself fun (which you can well afford)?
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Some trees and plants require the destructive force of a fire to explode into life. Their seeds wait patiently, sometimes for decades, for the incredible heat of a massive blaze that signals that their window of opportunity has finally come. Now that the trees that have dominated their territory have been killed or stripped down they have an opening to grab some sunlight and space for themselves. You, too, are waiting for just such a sign. To germinate prematurely would mean certain doom, as you’d just starve for lack of nourishment in the shadows of those who’ve had years and years to establish themselves. What am I hinting at? Patience. That’s what’s required now. Wait for your moment, Aries. It’s coming, but not here yet.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) No silly whispering behind your hand this week, Libra. I know you practice discretion out of natural tact and concern for others’ feelings (as well as for your own reputation), but right now anything worth saying is worth saying loudly and openly. Own your words and opinions, and stand by them (or, if you’re open-minded enough, truly reconsider them) when they’re challenged. Sneakiness is an undeniably ugly trait, and even though I know your prudence isn’t exactly underhandedness, it’s likely to be interpreted as such. Be loud and bold this week when you speak. If you think you can’t do that, then please just don’t say anything at all.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re being forged. You shouldn’t regard your troubles purely as curses. Yeah, they suck, but they have a silver lining too: they make you, and your relationships, stronger. Those that suffer together also bond; they form connections of much greater intimacy and resilience than those who’ve only shared pleasant times in each other’s company. Remember that this week, if it’s not all sunshine and roses. This shit won’t break you, or your relationships. It’s just going to make them that much more powerful and enduring. In that way, it’s not so much a curse as, ultimately, a blessing. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Your world is trembling this week, Gemini. All you crave is feeling something solid beneath your feet, but tremors are shaking your foundations at the moment. This could be quite alarming, I realize, but please try to stay calm. The earthquakes rocking your landscape are actually quite gentle. They’re not going to knock down any buildings, disrupt any power lines, or generate any tsunamis. At most, they’re likely to blow down cobwebs, unearth bits of buried treasure, and finally give you an excuse to run into the arms of those you’ve been wanting to share that kind of intimacy with. You’ve been waiting for just this kind of opening. Now use it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) There’s a time for romance, but there’s also a time for practicality. Sometimes it’s nice to dance around a delicate subject but occasionally it’s better to just be blunt and lay all your cards on the table. You could easily choose either method this week, probably with similar results. But the direct and honest approach will also earn you a bit of respect, since lately you’ve developed a reputation for beating around the bush and taking ages just to get to your point. Speak out, Cancer. Tell it like it is. It’s easier, faster, and just as effective (at least this time) as exercising pointless tact. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Let’s face it–even the most evolved Leo has habits born of a powerful ego drive. And every one of us has had the experience of feeling let down–just when
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Your craving for extremes makes you procrastinate. You believe you function best under tremendous pressure. You might even think that it’s the only way you can perform, but that’s not exactly true. Because of your habit of waiting until the last possible minute you’ve probably become conditioned to working only under desperate circumstances. But you don’t actually have to wait until the outside world leans on you that hard. There’s a trick that someone with your astute grasp of mental manipulation can perform: choosing to believe that your circumstances have indeed become dire when they haven’t (yet). It’s a self-deception I suggest you learn and practice this week; if you wait until what you think is the last minute, it’ll already be too late. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’re definitely not a sore loser. But to be fair you haven’t had much practice at it, since you win so often. Luckily, you’re mostly a gracious winner, instead of gloating and lording your prowess over those less fortunate. Don’t forget that decent habit this week, when your victories will (once again) far outnumber your losses. Even for someone with luck as incredible as yours this winning streak can’t last. When those you’ve trounced trounce you back, you’ll be glad you treated them right when you were on top, because they’re quite likely to return the favor once your positions are reversed.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Getting to know you is a process of becoming familiar with one idiosyncrasy after another. There’s no one around who looks more “normal” at first glance but proves to be anything but, the deeper one explores. Consequently, all of you have experienced this at some point: someone drawn to your “ordinary” façade is scared off by your extraordinary and deep inner world. That could be the case with anyone new who’s recently come into your life, if your surprise them with your weirdness after they’ve already formed much blander impressions of you. May I suggest flaunting your quirks this week? You might indeed freak a few people out, but better now than later.
