own denunciation of Trump’s Muslim travel ban. Here it is, in full: “I have been in contact with Attorney General Doug Chin regarding several orders issued by the federal courts in the last 24 hours. We believe these orders apply to all U.S. international airports, including those in Honolulu and Kona, and expect legal travelers to this country to be welcomed in Hawai‘i without being detained unlawfully by the federal government. “Refugees entering the United States are screened by the National Counterterrorism Center, FBI, Defense and State departments, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Refugees fleeing from war and persecution seek, simply, a better life. “Hawai‘i has a proud history as a place immigrants of diverse backgrounds can achieve their dreams through hard work. Many of our people also know all too well the consequences of giving in to fear of newcomers. The remains of the internment camp at Honouliuli are a sad testament to that fear. We must remain true to our values and be vigilant where we see the worst part of history about to be repeated.”
suits on Kauai. State Rep. Kaniela Ing, D–Kihei, was most pleased with the result. “I am humbled,” he said in a press statement on Jan. 27. “Thousands of everyday people stood up and spoke out against one of the most influential billionaires, the best PR professionals, and the best attorneys in the world, and we won. To Mark Zuckerberg, thank you for doing the right thing and hearing our voices. You now have an opportunity to set the bar for what being a good neighbor and an ally to indigenous peoples looks like. To everyone who helped share the story, mahalo and congratulations. This is a major victory for Native Hawaiians and everyday folks everywhere. Remember this feeling when you feel powerless. We now know for sure that when thousands of people stand together, we win. Aloha prevailed. I look forward to having conversations with Mr. Zuckerberg and the families involved. I trust that we will find a fair solution that ensures Mr. Zuckerberg’s privacy and security, opens trail and beach access for everyone, and keeps Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands.” Of course, Ing says he plans to go forward with sponsoring legislation on quiet title suits.
AG Doug Chin
Amidst reports from around the nation of mass demonstrations in airports, court orders and customs officials standing in flagrant defiance to those court orders, multiple news organizations are reporting that 16 attorneys general from across the U.S.–including Hawaii AG Doug Chin–have signed a statement that “condemns” President Donald Trump’s immigration ban yesterday on Muslims from seven nations. The ban incredibly pertains not only to those seeking to move to the U.S., but also many who already have Green Cards. Chaos reigned at airports across the country over the weekend as customs officials detained Muslims while civil liberties attorneys, many operating on a bono basis, camped out in airport terminals as they fought to get the courts to stop Trump’s order. At Dulles Airport, officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection brazenly defied court orders demanding they stop detaining travelers–a constitutional crisis born of Trump behaving more like a fascist dictator than a public servant beholden to the rule of law. “President Trump’s war on equality is already taking a terrible human toll. This ban cannot be allowed to continue,” said Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU)’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, in a Jan. 28 ACLU blog post. The statement Chin and the other AGs signed condemned Trump’s actions in no uncertain terms. “As the chief legal officers for over 130 million Americans and foreign residents of our states, we condemn President Trump’s unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful Executive Order and will work together to ensure the
federal government obeys the Constitution, respects our history as a nation of immigrants, and does not unlawfully target anyone because of their national origin or faith,” it states. “Religious liberty has been, and always will be, a bedrock principle of our country and no president can change that truth. “Yesterday, multiple federal courts ordered a stay of the Administration’s dangerous Executive Order,” it continued. “We applaud those decisions and will use all of the tools of our offices to fight this unconstitutional order and preserve our nation’s national security and core values. “We are confident that the Executive Order will ultimately be struck down by the courts. In the meantime, we are committed to working to ensure that as few people as possible suffer from the chaotic situation that it has created.” In a story from the Independent in the UK that was also posted Sunday morning, Chin was also quoted as saying that “We do believe the executive order is unconstitutional,” though he apparently refused to say anything else. After news of the AG’s statement broke, Hawaii Governor David Ige released his

“Now that the Zuckerberg case has brought Quiet Title claims to the fore, I will continue to pursue legislation that will solve this issue once and for all,” he said. In other Ing-related news, on Jan. 25 Ing struck a plea agreement on his legal troubles that dogged him last summer. Ing had missed a court date back in February 2016 on a driving without insurance citation, which led to a bench warrant for his arrest. Ing had originally insisted that his car was “undriveable,” but police testimony made clear that Ing was indeed driving at the time of his original citation. “Ing was fined $500, but half of that was suspended for six months on the condition that he not be convicted of another offense,” The Maui News reported on Jan. 26. “As part of a plea agreement with the prosecution, a charge of failure to appear was dismissed.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

MAUI BREWING CO. LAUNCHES BLACK PEARL Maui Brewing Company celebrated the launch of the 2016 Edition of Black Pearl Jan. 26 with festivities at both the Kihei Tasting Room and Kahana Brewpub. The launch of the very limited brew started with a few words from one of MBC’s “scallywags.” Pirate-themed cocktails and randalled beers were available. “The brewing, aging, and bottling of Black
Pearl in locally sourced rum barrels has been a passion project for us at Maui Brewing Company over the past year,” said Brewing Supervisor Clay Jenkins. “Months of preparation, recipe development, and patience has yielded a limited quantity of one of our most delicious releases to date. Our team has created a unique blend of decadent chocolate porter aged for nine months in charred rum barrels, rounded out by our signature toasted coconut. It is truly a feast for the senses for our die-hard fans as well as those new to barrel aged beers. We are excited to invite MBC fans on the Black Pearl voyage.” Black Pearl, with its 12.0 percent ABV and 30 IBUs, consists of the base beer for Imperial Coconut Porter (2016 GABF Gold Medal Field Beer Champion) that has been set aside to age in rum barrels. The additional time on the wood lends an added booziness and vanilla flavors to the viscous

High school students have a chance to win cash prizes while learning more about constitutional conflicts that arose during the Japanese internment, one of the most momentous periods in the nation’s history. The civics contest is organized by the federal courts of the western United States. “Not to Be Forgotten: Legal Lessons of the Japanese Internment” is the theme of the 2017 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest, an essay and video competition open to students in grades 9-12; the contest is open to public, private and parochial schools and homeschooled students of equivalent grade status. The contest theme relates to events occurring in 1942 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Presidential directives authorizing the military to take steps to guard against enemy sabotage or espionage on the West Coast led to the forced relocation of some 100,000 persons of Japanese descent, many of them U.S. Citizens. In studying the Japanese internment, students are asked to consider its relevance today as our nation seeks to protect against terrorism on American soil. “The contest will uniquely add to the student’s knowledge and understanding of the Constitution, which is the basis of our democracy,” said U.S. District Judge Janis L. Sam-
martino of San Diego, chair of the Ninth Circuit Courts and Community Committee. In preparing their essays and videos, students are advised to consider U.S. Supreme Court decisions in 1943 and 1944, which generally upheld the internment policy, along with lower court decisions in the 1980s, which resulted in exoneration for two Japanese-American men who had resisted relocation. Those cases bring into focus the constitutional conflicts that can arise when national security and individual rights are both at stake. The district court is offering local cash prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 for the top three finishers in both the writing and video competitions. Local winners go on to compete in the Ninth Circuit contest, which offers prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500 for the top three finishers in each category. Local winners will be announced in May, circuit winners in June. For more information about the contest, please contact the U.S. District Court, 808541-1178 clerkofcourt@hid.uscourts.gov. The entry deadline is 11:50pm on April 16, 2017. For more information visit Ca9. uscourts.gov/civicscontest.
Hawaii Maui to celebrate the selection of Central Maui as a Blue Zones Project site. Blue Zones Project is an HMSA well-being improvement initiative to help make healthy choices easier so area residents can enjoy longer, happier and healthier lives. Its activities include cooking classes, community walking groups and the walking school bus, which allows a group of children to walk to school under the supervision of two or more adults. “This is great news for our community,” said Anne Rillero, Maui Bicycling League Board Member and Secretary. “We are especially delighted that Blue Zones Project works to create environments where walking and bicycling are encouraged. This aligns with our vision at Maui Bicycling League to make Maui more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly, so that our keiki can safely walk or pedal to school, our adults can get to work, shopping and recreational activities without cars, and our seniors can travel safely without driving.” Maui Bicycling League advocates for safer bikeways and bike paths, working closely with state and county officials, local landowners, other nonprofits and the community. Maui Bicycling League also offers educational programs to encourage safer bicycling and safe vehicle operation around cyclists, as well as group rides and bicycle-related events for families and individuals. “We are grateful to the Wailuku Community Association for their hard work and dedication in bringing Blue Zones Project to Central Maui,” said Saman Dias, Chair of Maui Bicycling League. “We believe the Blue Zones Project will create a better quality of life for Maui residents and applaud its launch here in Central Maui.” To learn more about Blue Zones Project–Hawaii, visit Hawaii.bluezonesproject. com. LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATOR
BUREAUCRACY TRIUMPHS AGAIN
The salary the Golden State Warriors pay to basketball whiz Stephen Curry may be a bargain at $12 million a year, but the economics is weirder about the prices Curry’s fans pay on the street for one of his used mouthguards retrieved from the arena floor after a game. One used, sticky, saliva-encased teeth-protector went for $3,190 at one August auction, and SCP Auctions of California is predicting $25,000 for another, expelled during the NBA championship series last June. ESPN Magazine reported “at least” 35 Twitter accounts dedicated to Curry’s mouthguard.
Because the 2015 San Bernardino, California, terrorist attack that killed 14 and seriously wounded 22 was a “workplace” injury (in that the shooters fired only at fellow employees), any health insurance the victims had was superseded exclusively by coverage under the state’s “workers’ compensation” system–a system largely designed for typical job injuries, such as back pain and slip-and-falls. Thus, for example, one San Bernardino victim with “hundreds of pieces of shrapnel” still in her body even after multiple surgeries and in constant pain, must nevertheless constantly argue her level of care with a bureaucrat pressured by budgetary issues and forced to massage sets of one-size-fits-all guidelines.

In parts of Panama, some men still fight for access to women with the ferocity of rutting male elks. The indigenous Ngabe people mostly keep to themselves in rural areas but have surfaced in towns like Volcan, near the Costa Rican border, where in December a reporter witnessed two men fist-fighting to bloody exhaustion on the street in a typical “Mi Lucha” (“my struggle”), with the loser’s wife following the winner home. As the custom loses its cachet, only about a third of the time does the wife now comply, according to the website Narratively. (Bonus: It’s an often-easy “divorce” for the Ngabe–for a fed-up wife to taunt her husband into a losing fight, or for a fed-up husband to pick a fight and take a dive.)
THE CONTINUING CRISIS Over a six-year period (the latest measured), drug companies and pharmacies legally distributed 780 million pain pills in West Virginia–averaging to 433 for every man, woman and child. Though rules require dispensers to investigate “suspicious” overprescribing, little was done, according to a recent Drug Enforcement Administration report obtained by the Gazette-Mail of Charleston–even though half of the pills were supplied by the nation’s “big three” drugmakers (whose CEOs’ compensation is enriched enormously by pain pill production). Worse, year-by-year the strengths of the pills prescribed increase as users’ tolerance demands. (West Virginia residents disproportionately suffer from unemployment, coal miningrelated disabilities and poor health.)

University of Kentucky professor Buck Ryan disclosed in December that he had been punished recently (loss of travel funds and a “prestigious” award) by his dean for singing the Beach Boys classic “California Girls” for a lesson comparing American and Chinese cultures–because of the song’s “language of a sexual nature.” The school’s “coordinator” on sexual harassment issues made the ruling, apparently absent student complaints, for Ryan’s lyric change of “Well, East Coast girls are hip” to “Well, Shanghai girls are hip.”
WAIT WHAT The Las Vegas Sun reported in December that Nevada slot- and video-machine gamblers left almost $12 million on the floor during 2012 (i.e., winning tickets that remain uncashed for six months, thus reverting to the state), running the five-year total to nearly $35 million. And the pre-game injury report for college football’s Dec. 31 Citrus Bowl included two University of Louisville linebackers, Henry Famurewa and James Hearns, who were out of action against Louisiana State because of “gunshot wounds.”
LATEST IN VENDING MACHINES Passengers awaiting trains in 35 stations in France now find kiosks dispensing short stories to pass the time. A wide range of selections (even poetry!), in suggested reading-time lengths of one, three and five minutes, can be printed out for free. And the only U.S. vending machine for champagne is now operational in the 23rd-floor lobby of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Las Vegas. Moet and Chandon bubbly can be purchased with $20 tokens sold at the front desk.
UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT In December the European Union’s 28 nations reached what members called a historic agreement to thwart terrorists: a ban on private citizens’ possessing semi-automatic weapons–but exempted terrorists’ firearm of choice, the Kalishikov assault weapon. (Finland vetoed inclusion of the AK-47 because of concerns about training its reservists.)
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A December post on the Marietta, Georgia, police department’s Facebook page chided a shoplifter still at large who had left his ID and fingerprints (and inadvertently posed for security cameras). The police, noting “how easy” the man had made their job, “begged” him to give them some sort of challenge: “Please at least try to hide.” Suspect Dale Tice was soon in custody. ■

WHAT WAS REP. TULSI GABBARD THINKING
WHEN SHE WENT TO SYRIA? PHOTO BY ABRAHAM WILLIAMS
Story by Anthony Pignataro
T
he Syrian civil war is bloody meatgrinder. Since 2011, when it was born out the hope and democratic promise of the Arab Spring, the war has killed 470,000 people, according to international humanitarian observers. In mid-2016, according to the Syrian Center for Policy Research, a million people inside Syria were living in dangerous besieged areas, facing starvation, disease and worse. At the same, more than six million Syrians were displaced within their own country, and nearly five million were trying to find refuge in another nation entirely. The Syrian Network for Human Rights estimates that more than 100,000 Syrians have vanished since the war began–many swallowed by secret prisons where torture is rampant. Multiple factions, including the Islamic State and an Al Qaeda affiliate, are fighting the brutal regime headed by dictator Bashar al-Assad. Russia and the United States are involved too, using airstrikes to bomb “terrorists”–who they actually are is anyone’s guess. But the majority of the violence against the Syrian people themselves though comes straight from Assad. Here are a few examples from the 2017 World Report, put out by the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch: • “Syrian and Russian airstrikes continued to target, or indiscriminately strike civilian areas, including homes, markets, schools, and hospitals, using wide-area explosives, barrel bombs, cluster munitions, and flammable incendiary weapons.” • “Government forces used at least 13 types of internationally banned cluster munitions in over 400 attacks on opposition-held areas between July 2012 to August 2016, killing and injuring civilians, including children.” • “Government forces, and their allies, also increasingly resorted to the use of incendiary weapons, with at least 18 documented at-
10 FEBRUARY 2, 2017
tacks on opposition-held areas in Aleppo and Idlib between June 5 and August 10.” • “Government forces also continued using toxic chemicals in several barrel bomb attacks in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Syrian government helicopters dropped barrel bombs with toxic chemicals on residential neighborhoods in opposition-controlled parts of Aleppo city on August 10 and September 6.” In mid-January, Hawaii’s own Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–2nd District, stepped into this maelstrom of violence and horror with a secretive visit to Syria and Lebanon (former Democratic Representative Dennis Kucinich of Ohio traveled with her, as did Gabbard’s husband Abraham Williams, who took the official photographs of the trip). From Jan. 14-22, Gabbard was touring Damascus, Aleppo and Beirut. Sure, she didn’t attend Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 22, but she also skipped the Women’s Marches in Washington and around the country. Most controversial of all, Gabbard also agreed to meet with Assad himself–a huge gift to the dictator most responsible for the barbarism in Syria. “Originally, I had no intention of meeting with Assad, but when given the opportunity, I felt it was important to take it,” Gabbard said in a Jan. 25 statement. “I think we should be ready to meet with anyone if there’s a chance it can help bring about an end to this war, which is causing the Syrian people so much suffering.” The next day, Gabbard said something even more remarkable to Greta van Susteren on MSNBC. “I’ve been very worried and have carried with a heavy heart what has been happening there,” Gabbard told van Susteren. “The suffering of the Syrian people, and I wanted to go there for myself, to see if I could in some small way convey the love, the care and the ‘Aloha’ of the people of Hawaii, the people of our country, to the Syrian people.” Reaction to Gabbard’s trip has been, well, spirited. “Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has turned into
a stooge for Syria’s dictator,” screamed a Jan. 26 headline on Daily Kos, a left-wing weblog.. “Who will primary her?” (There’s no provision in Hawaii’s Constitution that allows for recalling elected officials.) Others had a remarkably different take. “Tulsi Gabbard is brave and the kind of person we need in the diplomatic corps,” the neoNazi Richard Spencer tweeted on Jan. 27. The next day, Gabbard responded to Spencer, though with considerably less fury than you might have hoped. “Our movement is one of love, aloha, and inclusivity–regardless of race or religion,” she tweeted on Jan. 28. “Your racist and hateful views don’t align with ours.” On Jan. 26, I submitted a list of questions to Gabbard’s office concerning the meeting with Assad–who was in the room with her, what did they discuss, and so forth. I also listed six acts of brutality the Assad regime committed against the Syrian people listed in the Human Rights Watch report, and asked if Gabbard had discussed any of these incidents with Assad. Though Gabbard’s press aide asked for my deadline (end of the day on Monday, Jan. 30), I never received a response to any of my questions. Of course, Gabbard has always been something of a maverick within the Democratic Party. Though she often found the time to criticize President Barack Obama–especially for his authorizing military strikes in Syria– she has yet to say or publish anything critical of President Donald Trump. Back in 2015, Gabbard also voted for the Republican-sponsored bill HR 4038, which would have required refugees from Syria and Iraq trying to come to the U.S. to get background checks from the FBI. The bill was needless and insulting–refugees coming to the U.S. are already subject to considerable criminal and background checks. And it’s not like there are hordes of refugees from Syria here anyway. According to the Washington, DC-based think tank Migration Policy Institute, of the millions of Syrians who have fled their country since the
war began. just 18,007 resettled in the U.S. between Oct. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2016. And it’s unlikely there will be any more. On Jan. 27–Holocaust Remembrance Day, of course–Trump signed an executive order all but banning refugees (unless they’re Christian) from Syria and six other Muslimmajority nations from entering the U.S. “We should not ban refugees from our country,” Gabbard tweeted on Jan. 26. “But we must address the root cause that is making people flee their homes–regime-change wars.” The not-very subtle implication here is that all these refugees are fleeing Syria because we’re trying to topple Assad. While it was probably at least an unstated goal of the Obama Administration to get rid of Assad, that’s not what has caused the majority of violence, as the recent Human Rights Watch report makes clear (and just to be precise–the HRW report also catalogues violence committed by anti-Assad regime factions and terrorists as well). During her trip to Syria, Gabbard said met with many people who expressed their outrage at–wait for it–the United States. “As I visited with people from across the country, and heard heartbreaking stories of how this war has devastated their lives, I was asked, ‘Why is the United States and its allies helping al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups try to take over Syria? Syria did not attack the United States. Al-Qaeda did,’” she said in a Jan. 25 news release from her office. “I had no answer.” The many questions surrounding exactly who funded Gabbard’s trip to Syria–and why–cast considerable doubt on the sincerity of those Gabbard spoke with. At the very least, Gabbard’s group was unquestionably attended by an official government minder, making actual honest dialogue with residents caught in a civil war all but impossible. But there’s evidence Assad’s government had even more control over Gabbard’s visit. One of those who traveled with with Gabbard was Bassam Khawam–a “longtime peace advocate,” according to Gabbard. In fact, according to a Jan. 29 Washington

Look, there’s nothing wrong with opposing U.S. military involvement in the Syrian war. In fact, it was probably always a bad idea to do so–civil wars are inherently messy, with shifting alliances and nefarious factions, and the Syrian war is incredibly complex and dangerous. Indeed, according to a Jan. 19 story in the Wall Street Journal (hardly a drum-beater for the left), though Assad has long said his regime is at war with ISIS, he’s actually buying oil and gas from ISIS, the revenues of which are helping to keep the Islamic State alive. U.S. airstrikes have probably killed some bad terrorists, but they’ve also killed civilians, which tends to inspire the growth of more rebels and terrorists. The U.S. does not have a solid track record in terms of successful interventions in these types of wars (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, to name a few), so steering clear of the fighting is undoubtedly a smart policy.
“
Gabbard and Kucinich with Syrian religious leaders
“As veterans we took an oath to preserve and defend the Constitution of the United States. The threat to the Constitution comes not from Russia, China or ISIL but from within the walls of Washington D.C. where the Congress and the Executive branch have enmeshed the country in ongoing unnecessary, illegal and unconstitutional wars,” said Barry Ladendorf, the president of Veterans for Peace, in a Jan. 27 news release sent out by Gabbard’s office. “As Veterans For Peace we seek to restrain our government from intervening, overtly or covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations.
“
Bashar al-Assad
“Previously we didn’t get support in this form, we would get light weapons and ammunition,” SDF spokesperson Talal Silo said in the Reuters story. “There are signs of full support from the new American leadership– more than before–for our forces.” Though Gabbard often criticized the Obama Administration for its military support of Syrian rebels, she has yet to say anything about this new escalation.
Post story, Khawam is a lobbyist for Assad. “This guy has been lobbying on behalf of Bashar Assad in the U.S. even before there was a revolution, and we are deeply troubled he would try to help a war criminal build relationships with sitting members of Congress,” said Mohammed Alaa Ghanem, director of government relations for the nongovernmental organization Syrian American Council, in the Post. Gabbard said the trip was organized and paid for by the Ohio office of the Arab American Community Center for Economic and Social Services (AACCESS). But there are questions as to whether this office actually exists. AACCESS-Ohio apparently has an office and a working phone (though I called the office on Jan. 26 and left a message with the guy answering the phone, asking to speak to someone there about Gabbard’s trip, no one returned my call), but little else. They have no web presence, and since 2007, they apparently haven’t filed tax returns. “No return required as revenue was less than $25,000,” reads a handwritten note scrawled on the bottom of the 2006 return, which though signed had no dollar amounts listed anywhere on the form. According to the Jan. 29 Post story, the office itself doesn’t exist. “I can assure you [Khawam] has never been an employee of the organization and he is not at all affiliated with ACCESS,” Rana Taylor, director of communications for the entire ACCESS organization, told the Post. “They don’t have any type of structure or governing body. They are non-functioning, not active as a member in any way.” On Jan. 31, with both multiple newspapers publishing increasingly aggressive stories about who exactly funded Gabbard’s trip, Gabbard announced that she would pay for the trip out of her own pocket. “Though the trip has met every requirement of the House Ethics Committee, the congresswoman has decided to reimburse AACCESS-Ohio for the trip because it has become a distraction from the important issue at hand—do the American people want their taxpayer dollars to continue to be used in support of militant groups working hand-in-hand with al-Qaeda and ISIS in the effort to overthrow the Syrian government?” stated a Jan. 31 news release from Gabbard’s office. “Contrary to baseless claims in the media, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is beholden to no one in the region, her views on the situation are her own, and her determination to seek peace is beyond question.” Ironically, Reuters reported that same day that the Trump Administration was escalating its military support for Syrian rebels by giving heavy armored vehicles to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
I think we should be ready to meet with anyone if there's a chance it can help bring about an end to this war, which is causing the Syrian people so much suffering.
For some time now, Gabbard has been pushing HR 608–the “Stop Arming Terrorists Act.” The bill would “would prohibit U.S. government funds from being used to directly or indirectly support terrorist groups like al-Qaeda, ISIS or those working with them,” according to a press statement released by her office. It’s a bill that, given the frightful record of successive U.S. administrations’ support for bloodthirsty regimes and terrorist groups during the 20th century, is hard to oppose.
- Rep. Tulsi Gabbard
Certainly, the U.S. government should not be supporting regime change wars nor directly or indirectly supporting known terrorist organizations, proxy groups and their allies to violently overthrow established governments.” That being said, Gabbard’s insinuations that the Syrian war exists because of the U.S., and her utter refusal to denounce the actions of Assad’s regime and his Russian allies, is bogus. Indeed, the American intervention in Syria pales before the onslaught caused by the Assad regime. This is hardly surprising, since Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad, was a butcher too, though on a smaller scale. In 1982, he ordered government forces to smash the Syrian city of Hama–a hotbed of opposition to his regime. The resulting bombardment, air strikes and armored invasion led to something between 10,000 and 40,000 dead (precise figures are impossible to get due to Syria not being anything remotely resembling an open, democratic state). While Gabbard could possibly make the case that we’re prolonging the war–propping up anti-regime forces that would otherwise have been ground under by the Syrian government, the foundation of that argument is that Assad needs to win the war. And that’s morally bankrupt.
This is the problem with the world we live in. Democracy and human rights in the U.S. and around the world are crumbling in the face of authoritarian pressures. In much of the world–Russia, Britain, Egypt, Turkey, the Philippines and, of course, the United States–ultranationalist forces are trying to suppress speech, brutalize minority populations and generally just smash what remains of the rule of law. The Syrian regime led by Bashar alAssad is at the forefront of these efforts. Yes, by all means–denounce the killings by ISIL or the Islamic State or whatever you want to call it, but there’s no need to grant a dictator like Assad any scrap of legitimacy. In other words, you can oppose U.S. military involvement in Syria and still denounce Assad as a brutal dictator. You can do both quite easily and effectively. This is why organizations like Human Rights Watch are so valuable. Reading through the Syria chapter of their new World Report is instructive because it shows, in stark detail, the crimes and injustices of every faction in Syria. It’s not selective, because they’re not trying to favor any one regime over another (hell, the HRW spokespeople wouldn’t even comment for this story). Right now, with human rights and democratic norms under assault in the U.S. and around the world, we need legislators who resist authoritarian force, not collaborate with it. We need our elected officials to stand up for the rule of law and civil liberties, not legitimize bloodthirsty dictators. With Trump stomping around the White House like a greasy fascist dictator, signing racist, antiMuslim executive orders on immigration and then firing public officials who refuse to carry out those orders because courts have ordered them halted, we need officials willing to denounce authoritarians more than ever. Gabbard’s trip to Syria and her meetand-greet with Assad sent precisely the wrong message to her constituents in Hawaii, the American people and everyone around the world who still (for whatever reason) looks to the United States as a champion of democracy. Instead, she’s told the world that a “Democratic” U.S. legislator would rather appease a butcher than stand up for justice. She has bestowed legitimacy and honor on a regime that deserves only a war crimes tribunal. If ever there was a time when “Democrats” like Gabbard needed a refresher course in what democracy actually was, it’s now. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Quinoa Bowl
My favorite is the Peahi, and Azeem says it’s their most popular one. It comes with lettuce, tomato, sauteed onion, jalapeno and spicy aioli. All of the burger plates come with one side for $9.99, either greens, sauteed veggies, or furikake yam fries, and the plates can be made with quinoa or greens instead of the bun, but trust me you want to try the bun. Other burger toppings include a combo of avo, pea hummus, kimchee, mushrooms or sauerkraut. If you aren’t in the mood to burger up, their avo toast ($6.99) is another fantastic dish. That includes the bun, plus avo and other toppings. They also serve collard wraps, salads and quinoa bowls. I feel like Wailuku Nourish is still in the soft opening phase. In fact, they’re still working on the menu. “Nut milks are difficult items because they have no additives and are produced twice a week to keep them fresh so they can be out at times,” says Butt. “We haven’t

ife Foods has been quietly cranking out veggie burgers and other health food products in their commercial kitchen in Wailuku for the last few of years. In 2016, they finally cracked open the doors to the public by opening two of their Nourish Health Bars, one in Paia and the other in Wailuku. Their original concept of creating a healthy veggie burger with probiotics and local ingredients has given way to an even bigger vision with Nourish Health Bars, according to owner Azeem Butt. “The heart of our vision is foods that are locally produced in small batches in a sustainable way and are designed to nourish and heal your body,” says Butt. “We not only take toxins like gluten and animal proteins out, we actually add whole plant
based nutrition so a meal truly becomes nourishment for your body and not just calories to consume. That’s the reason why we ferment our ingredients and keep our foods full of probiotics.” What are these probiotics that we speak of? Simply put, they are microbes for your gut. Great for digestion and so many other things. You will find probiotics in fermented foods like kimchee, kombucha, tempeh, kefir and sauerkraut. At Nourish, you can find probiotics in everything. Their burger has them. Their white, red and yellow sauces are house-made, probiotic-rich mayo, ketchup and mustard. They even have a spicy aioli with probiotics. If that isn’t enough, they make an astonishing selection of kombucha, available on tap, in eight flavors ($5/16oz$20/64oz). I m not a superfan of kombucha, but I thought their most popular flavor, Mint Basil, is really refreshing, and it has blue-green algae in it. Where else in Wailuku can you get algae in your drink? “Nourish is a Health Bar,” says Butt. “A bar you go during the day time to get your daily probiotics, fermented and vitamins and minerals needs. A meal at Nourish can get you close to 70 percent
of your daily probiotics, fermented foods and vitamins and minerals because all of the products used in our menu items are produced in house with fermented ingredients and have been created to include probiotics and nutrition.” The Nourish cafe in Wailuku has a small but neat area for dining and ordering. The commercial kitchen area is much bigger and extends beyond and behind. They have four seats at a bar for eating or waiting. White walls and a digital menu with a photo slideshow round out the look. The kombucha taps are all self-serve; to help you decide, you can sample any of their flavors with the little sampler cups on the counter. They have organic lemonades ($3), coffee ($3-5), tea ($4) and exquisite house-made nut milk. The fresh nut milk comes in flavors like silver strawberry, golden turmeric, chocolate, coffee latte and sweet matcha. Just ask what they have available–it’s $5 for a glass.
Avo Toast
When you peruse the menu, you’ll notice they have a huge list of burger options. These are no ordinary burgers–they come with their house-made, no-soy veggie patty on a spectacular gluten-free, vegan bun. If you’ve ever bought, made or eaten gluten-free, vegan bread, then you know how tricky it is to arrive at a really edible and delicious product. This bun is really extraordinary, and Azeem is justifiably proud of that. “We make our own gluten-free and vegan bread,” says Butt. “This is the only bread of its kind in the country that is gluten-free and vegan and doesn’t use any gums or additives. It’s made with ancient grains like Amaranth, Sorghum, Millet, Chia seeds. You have to taste it to believe how special this bread is. Our burger patties are made with our soy-free tempeh, made with mung beans. It also has quinoa, carrots and onions and lots of fresh herbs.” They have nine or so different burgers on the menu, all named after ocean breaks.
launched the soups consistently yet. We are still working with recipes to make sure we can get the right nutrition and flavor profile. We should have them consistently starting March. We should have the vegan sushi and our full grab ‘n’ go menu starting March 1st.” The Paia location has the vegan sushi for now, and on the weekend they hold special events. This Saturday, Feb. 4, Pat Simmons Jr. is playing there 6-8pm. “Currently we do Acoustic Saturdays consistently,” says Butt. “It’s 6-8pm every Saturday. We have lots of good foods to eat and an amazing ambience to enjoy with friends and family. We will be adding other activities like independent movie night, story hours for kids. Best way to know about these things is to like our Facebook page where we post all of our specials and events.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

ne of the best ways to see the front lines of the art world is to visit the annual Juried Exhibition at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center. This free art show started in early January and will hang through Feb. 17. For this year’s show, the Hui invited Duncan Dempster to curate. This collection of art has no theme; in fact, Dempster admits he went visceral to choose pieces. “Ultimately, my selections were based on gut reactions and fleeting judgments rather than a unified philosophy of jurying,” says Dempster. “As a viewer I think it’s always critical to remain open to chance and surprise. My baseline for judgment was not a demonstration of technical proficiency or mastery. I value ambition and confidence in work, but also risk taking and vulnerability. Often times I’m most interested in work that eludes easy understanding, and raises more questions than answers. I’m also drawn to works that seem to operate on their own terms, with disregard for history or the proper way something should be done.” Dempster teaches printmaking at the University of Hawaii, and is the executive director of Honolulu Printmakers. It was interesting to see what risks Dempster took with the show. The show features both local and mainland artists. Some pieces are immediately striking, while others left me wishing Dempster was there to describe what his gut was feeling when he looked at it. “For this exhibition I looked for instances of artists articulating a compelling personal voice through their work,” says Dempster. “While resisting the impulse to try to make this show about the locale, I did select several pieces that evoke a strong sense of place in ways that are non-sentimental, oblique or complex.” I often turn to art and artists to sort out some of the monkey business in the political arena. They have a wonderful way of filtering bullshit, which refreshes me. Tongue in cheek or not, Mike Takemoto’s “Dinner Time at Gitmo” was just one of the standouts in the show for me. This ink-on-paper work,
mounted on a silk scroll, was lovely and disturbing at the same time. Another was Jefferson Stillwell’s mixed-media “What Now,” which featured Lady Liberty in a bullseye. Other striking piece was more off the wall. The collection of old copper pipes and fittings by Barclay Hill called “Plumber’s Nightmare” was oddly comforting–if only I had the $5,400 needed to purchase it. The found object artwork by Courtney Morihiro titled “The Dead Zone” made me look twice; in fact, each time I looked I liked it more. I always marvel at textile arts and Sheri Levin McNerthney’s “Gathering Chi,” a shibori on silk with selective degumming, is a favorite. McNerthney says the degumming process is difficult, and she put a lot of work into this piece, yet it’s so subtle. The giant mandala of white on white shibori is stealthy–you have to look closely to see it, yet the mandala dominates the artwork. It’s ghostly and beautiful. There’s a lot of fine art to appreciate as well. Sarah Voyer’s watercolor “Growing” is so beautiful, delicate and intricate that you want to cry for it. Local artist Tania Arens, an instructor at the Hui and tattooist, produced a monotype titled “Rocks” with great movement, color and brush strokes in the waves. Lynette Pradiga’s colorful giant twin frames jump off the wall at you in “A Drop in the Ocean,” when you first enter the show. Some of the abstract and organic shapes were put together by torn pages of old Japanese newsprint and World War II paperback novels, a fun surprise that added even more depth up close. The show provides a surprise around every corner. It’s a welcome respite to the world at large. Get Rich Quick Scheme Matthew McConaughey is the best part of ‘Gold’ ★★★★★ Rated R / 121 Min.
B
ased on the 1990’s Bre-X mining scandal, Gold stars Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Mills, a boisterous but sloppy businessman. Mills bets everything he has on an Indonesian expedition, which he hopes will secure the site for a gold mine. With the help of a no-nonsense partner (a perfect Edgar Ramirez), Mills presses on, even as his finances dry up and his company lingers on collapsing. Gold takes too long to fully grab its audience, with a first act that should have pulled me in more. The contrast of life in board room meetings and the Indonesian gold digging should have been stronger. Since much of this is obviously a modernized update of The Treasure of Sierra Madre, there should have been more immediacy and punch in the first act. Thankfully, the wild second act and the downright crazy climax hit the spot. While the screenplay is uneven and lacking the grand scale that the story deserves, the film maintains interest with its let-it-ride, anything goes success story. There’s a predictability to movies like these, as we wait for the other shoe to drop
when the partying and ensuing debauchery peaks. On the other hand, there’s such a rollercoaster quality to Mills’ journey that the highs and lows are still adding up in the film’s final moments. McConaughey is in top form, playing a man who is unfailingly driven and passionate when sober and irascible when drunk. Whether on top of the world or scraping the bottom, there’s a consistent desperation in Mills to be taken seriously by everyone in his life. McConaughey doesn’t concern himself by making Mills sympathetic but maintaining our fascination by portraying this creep both honestly and going for broke. Ramirez is once again solid in a magnetic turn and Craig T. Nelson, Stacey Keach, Bruce Greenwood and Corey Stoll are perfect in supporting roles. After being stuck in forest ranger duds in Pete’s Dragon, it’s great seeing Bryce Dallas Howard cut loose. Playing Mills’ wife, Howard gives a sexy, grounded turn that makes us understand the attraction to the ride she’s on but also why she can’t keep up with her husband’s shameless excess. The song choice for the soundtrack is fun, evoking the late 1980s in unconventional ways. Instead of the expected tunes by, say, Whitney Houston and Starship, we get Iggy Pop and a solid Talking Heads cover. There’s
You know what I'm going to buy with my share? TiVo!
also the spot-on hairstyles, with Howard in particular appearing ready to claim her title as a 1987 Prom Queen. The timing of this film is weird, to say the least. I’m not a political writer and have no interest in turning this into an editorial, but here’s the thing: can anyone watch this movie right now and not think of Donald Trump? The protagonist boasts an impressive, do-or-die business sense but is also delusional, crass, does and says whatever he wants and gleefully flaunts his indiscretions for all to see. He also has a head of hair that’s noteworthy for how ghastly it is and believes his success embodies the American Dream. Does this remind you of anyone?
Director Steve Gaghan previously made the justifiably forgotten Katie Holmes thriller, Abandon and the admirable but overrated Syriana. Here, he encourages great performances from his cast but can’t fully maintain the excitement and droll humor the story naturally exudes. Gaghan is clearly aiming for the mixture of outrageous excess and cautionary tale achieved by both The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle. This is closer to a good faux-Scorsese film, like Blow, than a genuine classic. McConaughey’s performance is the one element here that is truly 100 carat gold. His latest movie isn’t always stellar but McConaughey’s performance is better than just awe-right awe-right awe-right. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
I wish I could be as cool as you. I don’t mean that facetiously; I’m often subject to embarrassing lapses when my emotionality gets the best of me; I’ve rarely, if ever, witnessed anything like that happening to you. If you ever allow your feelings to rage out of control, you must do it in private, where no one else can see. Although this has surely often been useful–it won’t be this week. See, some people are (desperately) looking for signs of emotion. Whether you feel the way they hope you do, or not, giving them that rare glimpse of your internal workings will not only avoid lots of trouble and needless drama–it’s likely to be an unexpected win-win.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
It’s all about unbridled generosity, about lavishing those you love (and even some of those you don’t) with all the blessings you have it in your power to dispense. You have many faults, Leo; this you know. Unfortunately, some people have been noticing the crap sides of you much more than the sweet ones. Maybe you have been a bit selfish? Make up for it now by giving, without thought of what you’ll get back, without self-doubt, without investing it in meaning either way. Remember that giving to others is quite a nice thing to do–and the fewer strings attached to your offerings, the nicer it is. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
As much as you’d love to just wipe the slate clean and start over, your repeated attempts to do so simply aren’t likely to succeed at the moment. Sometimes there’s no use in trying to force things. They require time, and nothing else–no amount of herculean effort or passionate desire–will do. Give them that time. Everything changes, eventually. Sometimes you can influence how and how fast things transform, and sometimes you just have to wait for an opening. Be patient, my dear. It might not happen exactly when and how you wish it would, but it will, ultimately, all work out. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
A classic Aries mistake is to take on too much. You generate a magnificent game plan, and instead of breaking it up into manageable chunks, you attempt to make it all happen at once. Despite your tremendous vigor and determination, this almost always results in disaster, because the next time your energy wanes, you become overwhelmed by the enormity of what you’ve taken on. Your strategy for self-improvement is like a nine-course meal. You’ve got to pace yourself, and tackle it in bite-sized pieces. Chew and swallow one at a time. It may take you longer than you wished to get to dessert, but at least you’ll get there (without choking).
Sorry, darling. You’re fun to play jokes on. We don’t mean you to suffer, really, and if we thought our mischief would actually hurt you, we wouldn’t go there. It’s just that your reactions are so entertaining, your good sportsmanship exemplary; and your pragmatically forgiving nature ensures there won’t be longterm repercussions to a silly prank. However, despite your sweetness I suspect the thought of revenge occasionally crosses your mind. I hope you don’t take this notion too seriously, but if you can deliver it as lightheartedly as the original offences then this week is a good time to dispense your vengeance.
Bonsai trees are genetically no different than the full-size trees in the park. They’ve just been trimmed and trained to limit their growth. Humans aren’t quite so malleable; nevertheless, there are those who’d limit your access to the things that will help you grow. These people have their own specific agendas, but generally the idea is to maintain the status quo. They might even believe it’s for your own good. However, I find the idea of keeping you limited and safe repugnant. Break out of the tiny pot that’s keeping your roots short and shallow, and get out of the shade. It’s time to grow–whether those around you like it, or not.
Because you’ve had so much practice, you’re awfully good at living with regret. Woulda, coulda, shoulda– these words occur way too often in your personal soundtrack. Yeah, you’ve screwed up, at times, and because you’re a Scorpio, those mistakes have occasionally been huge. And even though you rationally accept that there’s nothing to be done but move on, it’s often awfully hard for you to do so. This week, however, you should get a good solid boost in that direction–if you choose to run with it, you could travel so far down the road away from your screw-up that you can’t even see it, let alone spend hours reliving it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Geminis are prone to caffeine addiction. We know the story: at first it’s a performance enhancer, but eventually it’s simply a performance maintainer–you can’t function without it. Constantly running this kind of energy deficit isn’t healthy. Now, we both know asking you to give up your java is a ridiculous proposition. But changing your relationship to it isn’t so much to ask. Assess how often you consume the stuff because you “need’ it, and how often simply out of boredom or habit. I suspect you’ll find areas where you could significantly cut down. If you agree, this is a good week to try.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Your sign’s symbol is a set of scales. The whole balance thing means that it’s hard for you to let go of a grudge. I’ve known Libras to carry baggage for years, waiting for a chance to get even. But please just consider how all that emotional luggage is screwing up your life, my dear. You certainly can’t move as far or as fast as you could if you were traveling more lightly. You want to keep evolving at a snail’s pace? Fine. Go ahead. But don’t expect all of us to wait for you. If I were you, I’d dump that shit, pronto, and start trying to catch up. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
QUIZ understood
Your personal PR isn’t inaccurate; it’s simply optimistic. It pertains to only the best parts of you—sort of the you that’d exist, full-time, if you’d never been hurt, damaged, or suffered self-doubt. You’re lucky; your best self makes frequent appearances. Inevitably, though, you eventually get bogged down. This is when you get into trouble. Because you initially put on your best face, some people feel betrayed when the less-than-perfect reality shows up. This week, try a new strategy: modesty. Downplay your greatness. That way, when reality doesn’t match your advertising, it won’t matter, because people will be surprised and impressed, not disappointed.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Now is not the time to indulge in one of your favorite activities: wallowing in nostalgia. But touching base with the sweeter moments of your past could be useful, as you have the chance to create a number of delicious, vivid memories this week (the kind you’d wallow in later in life). Try to remember the best times of your life, if only to recall why they were the best times. You can’t recreate your youth, and you shouldn’t try. But some (and only some) of the habits of those good times could be reinvented now, with amazing results. Don’t waste time thinking your best years are behind you. Consider it a challenge to somehow make this one (and every one) better than the last.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Sweetheart, we just want an in. Sometimes the very thing we found attractive at first–your inscrutability, for instance–is exactly what keeps us from acting on that attraction; we just don’t know how. Help us out, Capricorn. Spill your guts. These are not the kinds of secrets that serve you well; indeed, it’s in your best interest that they become common knowledge–everyone will be happier that way. Give us some clues, too, if you please, regarding how to seduce one of you emotional weirdoes. Teaching us this skill is pure win. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
