EV charging, meaning that compliance with the law is only 22.2% on Maui.” That’s right: just 22.2 percent of parking lots here that should have EV parking stations actually have them. It’s 30 percent on Oahu, but barely 22 percent here. By phone, Lawlor said his team had started their survey by using GIS layers and satellite imagery to identify parking lots across the island that looked to have more than 100 parking stalls–basically any lot that looked to be larger than 40,000 square feet should have at least 100 stalls, Lawlor said. Since he already knows where EV parking stall chargers are located (“We have really good date on where existing chargers are,” Lawlor told me), it was simply a matter of counting up the number of lots that should have EV stalls but don’t. But in
ington and included Tima Kurdi, who lost three relatives trying to escape from the Syrian War. “Together, we’re raising our voices and calling on our nation’s leaders to pass the Stop Arming Terrorists Act,” Gabbard said in the news release. “Last night, President Trump talked about many things, but he did not address the destructive regime change war in Syria that has caused such great human suffering, created millions of refugees, caused tremendous loss of life, and has strengthened our enemies. I urge the Trump Administration and leaders in Congress to support this important bipartisan legislation and pass the Stop Arming Terrorists Act.”

Though Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–HI, talks a lot about the Syrian Civil War these days–stopping U.S. involvement in the war, passing her Stop Arming Terrorists Act (HR 608), etc.–it’s not all she’s up to. In fact, on Feb. 27, she co-sponsored a new bill–HR 1227–that goes by the unassuming name of Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2017. “If passed, this bill would take marijuana off the federal controlled substances list–joining other industries such as alcohol and tobacco,” states a Feb. 27 news release from Rep. Thomas Garrett, R-VA, the bill’s lead sponsor (on Mar. 1, Reason.com published a good blog post on the bill). “I have long believed justice that isn’t blind, isn’t justice,” Garrett said in the news release. “Statistics indicate that minor narcotics crimes disproportionately hurt areas of lower socio-economic status and what I find most troubling is that we continue to keep laws on the books that we do not enforce. Virginia is more than capable of handling its own marijuana policy, as are states such as Colorado or California.” Garrett, a Republican representing Virginia’s 5th District, is in his first term of office. And apparently, Gabbard’s teaming up with him on the marijuana bill isn’t a one-time thing. “Reps. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02), Peter Welch (VT-AL), and Tom Garrett (VA05) hosted a press conference today urging their colleagues to support and pass the bipartisan Stop Arming Terrorists Act (H.R.608),” stated a Mar. 1 news release from Gabbard’s office. The press conference took place in front of the Capitol building in Wash-
ducted by Blue Planet Foundation,” the Star-Advertiser reported. “Since passage in 2009, the law has been ignored by most parking lot owners because of its lack of teeth. It does not assign an agency to hold the properties accountable, and there is no penalty if a parking lot forgoes an EV charger.” The story was entirely focused on Oahu, but given that the 2009 law covers all of Hawaii, I called Blue Planet Foundation to find out what they found when they looked at Maui. If anything, the situation’s even worse out here. “We found that there are 171 properties of public accommodation with over 100 parking stalls on Maui,” Shem Lawlor, Blue Planet’s clean transportation director, emailed me on Feb. 28. “By law these properties are required to “have at least one parking space
MAUI COUNTY LAGGING IN EV PARKING STALLS In case you missed it, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser ran a fascinating story on Feb. 27 about the massive shortage of EV parking stalls on Oahu. It’s a problem considerably complicated by a 2009 state law (SB 1202) that mandates the installation of such stations in every parking lot in the state with more than 100 stalls. “Roughly 70 percent of properties on Oahu required to have an electric vehicle (EV) charging station have not installed one, according to a survey con-

some instances he couldn’t accurately estimate the number of stalls, so last week he flew to Maui to make a few physical site inspections. “Condos and apartment buildings are exempt from the law, but hotels are required,” Lawlor said. “Condo rentals are a gray area. So we went to each one. Did they have a front desk? Were they marketed to tourists?” There will be more detailed information about the EV parking situation throughout Hawaii coming later this month, when Blue Planet Foundation releases their study, Lawlor added. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

MAUI HUMANE SOCIETY EXPANDS CLINIC The Maui Humane Society recently funded the expansion of its Veterinary and Spay/Neuter clinic with a grant from PetSmart Charities. The nearly $260,000 grant allowed MHS to expand the current veterinary clinic by more than 700 square feet. This expansion further supports MHS’s ongoing efforts to reduce the animal homeless population and to save as many animal lives as possible. The new space increases the surgical capacity of the existing spay/neuter clinic to approximately 6,000 surgeries annually.

Two scholarship opportunities are being offered to West Maui students by the Friends of Moku‘ula and Maui Nei Native Expeditions. The nonprofits are offering one $500 Akoni Akana Po‘okela Scholarship to a West Maui student who is graduating from high school this year; a second $500 scholarship will go to a West Maui student who is currently enrolled in University of Hawaii Maui College. High school seniors and college students who reside in West Maui must submit a written statement that describes how they will use the scholarship award to advance their education, whether it be in the pursuit of Hawaiian cultural arts or skills, enrolling in courses at a college or university, or enrolling in a vocational school. The scholarships are offered in honor of Akoni Akana, the first executive director of Friends of Moku‘ula. After his death in 2011, a scholarship fund was established by the organization to perpetuate the sharing of Native Hawaiian culture and history, cultivate traditional practices in a new generation, and encourage stewardship of important lands to benefit youth as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow. Scholarship requests must be submitted no later than April 28, 2017 by email to: mauinei@mokuula.com (Attention: Program Director). Full legal name and contact information should be included.

More than 100 citizen scientists joined Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) researchers February 25 for the Great Whale Count 2017. During the count, 984 humpback whales were spotted, including 544 pods and 88 calves; last year PWF counted 732 whales and 83 calves; we’ll do the math, that is 252 more sightings than were recorded in 2016. “The results this year suggest we are trending towards Great Whale Count 2011-2015 levels, where over 1,000 animals were sighted,” said PWF Founder and Executive Director Greg Kaufman. “Overall we are encouraged and excited by the number of humpback whales sighted over the past 20 years.” Also on February 25, more than 590 volunteers gathered data from the shores

of Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii islands for the 2017 Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count. This three-times-per-year count keeps track of the number of whale sightings per 15 minute time periods off the shores of the three islands–so you can’t really compare the numbers. For example, according to the Marine Sanctuary report, a total of 174 whale sightings were recorded during the 11:30am11:45am time period, the most of any time period during the day’s count. And the preliminary report also states that there were more whale sightings on the island of Hawaii compared to last month’s. The detailed results can be found at Sanctuaryoceancount.org/resources. All in all, as early whale watching on Maui has indicated, it looks like a great
“We are very thankful that PetSmart Charities not only believes in the work we’re doing, but is willing to help fund it, therefore making an investment to decrease the number of homeless animals on Maui” said Jerleen Bryant, CEO Maui Humane Society. President of PetSmart Charities David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D. commended the Humane Society’s diligent work to reduce the homeless pet population through targeted spay and neuter efforts. “With this grant, we are thrilled to support their mission to proactively prevent unplanned litters and look forward to seeing the results of their lifesaving work,” Haworth said. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN MOP San Francisco’s best-paid janitor earned more than a quarter-million dollars cleaning stations for Bay Area Rapid Transit in 2015, according to a recent investigation by Oakland’s KTVU. Liang Zhao Zhang cleared almost $58,000 in base pay and $162,000 in overtime, and other benefits ran his total income to $271,243. He worked at San Francisco’s Powell Street station, a hangout for the homeless, who notoriously sullied the station 24/7 (urine, feces, and needles, especially), necessitating overtime hours that apparently only Zhang was interested in working. In one stretch during July 2015, he pulled 17-hour days for two and a half straight weeks. glar was successful in his Feb. 7 break-in at a home, but his getaway was thwarted by a snowfall that blocked him in on a roadway. He eventually decided to ask a passerby for help–and inadvertently picked out a man (of the city’s 140,000 residents) whose house he had just broken into (and who recognized him from reviewing his home’s security camera footage). The victim called police, who arrested the man (and reported that it was the second residential break-in that night in which the snowfall had foiled a burglar’s getaway.)
In Portland, Oregon, in January, Ashley Glawe, 17, a committed “goth” character with tattoos, piercings and earlobe holes (“gauges”) was, she said, “hanging out” with Bart, her pet python, when he climbed into one of the lobes. She couldn’t get him out, nor could firefighters, but with lubrication, hospital emergency workers did (thus avoiding an inevitable split lobe if Bart had kept squeezing his way through).
WAR IS ALL HELL Iraqi forces taking over an ISIS base in Mosul in January reported finding papers from at least 14 Islamic State “fighters” who had tried to claim “health” problems, asking commanders to please excuse them from real combat (and martyrdom). One (a Belgian man) actually brought a note from a doctor back home attesting to his “back pain.” Five of the 14 were initiated by volunteers from France, a country that endures a perhaps-deserved national reputation for battle-avoidance.

GREAT ART! German art collector Rik Reinking paid the equivalent of about $138,000 in 2008 for a resplendent, complex drawing by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye, but it was one created in ink on the skin of (the still-alive) tattoo parlor manager Tim Steiner–to be delivered only upon Steiner’s death, when his skin will be displayed in Reinking’s collection. (The deal also requires that, in the meantime, Steiner personally showcase his back at galleries three times a year, and BBC News recently caught his latest appearance.)

even a signed consent form by the patient would not immunize the doctor (but might mitigate the amount of damages awarded).
Legislators in Iowa and Florida recently advanced bills giving women who receive legal abortions up to 10 years (or longer, in Iowa) to sue the doctor if the abortion winds up causing them “emotional distress.” (Doctors in all states are already liable, of course, for actual “negligence” in their practice.) In the Iowa version (which the Des Moines Register reported would likely face amendments),
The first robots to have survived journeys close to the “core” of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan (which melted down in a 2011 earthquake) returned a reading of 530 “sieverts” per hour (some scientists label just four Sieverts an hour fatal to half the people exposed to it). Since the robots stopped short of the actual nuclear fuel, and since they only visited one of the three cores, the true danger of Fukushima remains unknown. (On a more optimistic note, scientists in February said they have developed a computer chip that would survive on the surface of Venus for 21 days, eclipsing the old record of two hours–long enough to send back meaningful data, including the temperature. The current estimated temperature is 878 degrees Fahrenheit.)
PRIESTS GONE BAD Prominent Tallahassee, Florida, pastor O. Jermaine Simmons, a community leader who ministers to the homeless and downtrodden, was rescued by police on Jan. 17, naked and hiding behind a fence after making a run for it when the husband of his mistress found the two in bed. The husband, screaming, “I’m gonna kill him,” ran for his handgun, and the mistress summoned police, but by Jan. 30, all involved had declined to press charges. Simmons, married with a son, is highly regarded for good deeds such as running a “cold night” shelter.
WAIT WHAT In January, a New York City judge dismissed the original indictment of John Kennedy O’Hara, 55, who had been convicted in 1996 of the crime of “felony voting”–the only person convicted under that state law since Susan B. Anthony, who cast a ballot in 1872 even though females were barred from the polls. O’Hara was indicted for voting in 1992 and 1993 after registering in Brooklyn elections from a “bogus” address–a basement apartment that was considered uninhabitable. A judge in 2017 determined that the apartment “could” have been habitable. O’Hara paid $15,000 in fines and did 1,500 hours of community service. ■

efore the holidays, I was passing by the memorial above Pukalani and noticed that the five poinsettias had blown over in the heavy weather we had. I stopped and picked them up. They hadn’t gotten any of that rain because they were sideways so in the next days I watered them too. After Christmas, I saw that one was on its side so I stopped to pick that up on my way home. I’m writing because what I found were branches broken off of the beautiful plants these families and friends had planted! A kind friend provided some root boost but the question is who would do this? Is that how you would want your loved ones memorial treated? No! In my opinion, we as a community should donate ground cover/plants/care. Please show some respect, at the very least. ■

HUI NO EAU’S JUDY
BISGARD
RETROSPECTIVE STORY BY JEN RUSSO & PHOTOS BY DARRIS HURST
T
his Friday, Mar. 10, the annual retrospective show at the Hui No‘eau kicks off with an in-depth view of the art of Judy Bisgard. As a young girl she loved to saddle up and take off adventuring the mountainside when Maui was ruled by agriculture. That feeling of adventure and roaming fearlessly presents itself in her body of work that spans decades and many medias. “We grew up horseback riding all over the ranch,” says Bisgard. “In those days there weren’t any gates. I would be in the pineapple fields. My dad worked for Maui Pine. We would ride horseback after school. He loved to ride. He would say, ‘Saddle up!’ and off we would go. It was a simpler time with no gate locks, mom and pop stores and a large farming and ranching community.” Looking at her art, one of the first things you might notice is that Bisgard travels freely through genres and media. Her show features oil painting, plein air painting, wood cuts, encaustic, intaglio, collagraph, landscapes, landmarks, abstract and fiber art. “I have been taking classes off and on for 30 years,” says Bisgard. “My baskets were the first things to go in shows. They were in the early Art Mauis. I haven’t kept track of the dates. I have been in and out of Art Maui a lot. Just lucky. You never know when you are going to get in but it’s always nice. I try to put in things that are a challenge to me. I don’t enter the same thing. So I’m always

trying new media. Because that is the challenge: to get a new media in.” Her retrospective shows part of her process, with the raw woodcuts or other print media plates hanging next to finished prints. She says she took her first printmaking class at the Hui. “A lot of what I have done etching and printing, it all started at the Hui,” she says. “Darrell Orwig taught me my first etching class. When Paul Mullowney came a few years ago at the Hui, I was always there and watching. They had visiting artists from all over the world coming and doing amazing stuff. They would take a painter and put
them doing a wood block. Or they would take a poet and a painter and have them do a set of intaglio. That was a learning experience, watching that kind of printing. The Hui has workshops constantly. It’s a constant learning process for me.” Orwig, a celebrated Maui artist, Hui member and volunteer is looking forward to the show. “Where to start?,” says Orwig. “In the military we called it ‘leadership by example.’ Judy’s work is competent, professional, competitive and almost fearless in all of its forms. These are just some of the elements that I have seen and experienced in
Judy’s work. In spite of her talent, Judy still considers herself a student of the arts. Over the years, her works have been inspiring examples for others to learn from.” He says to keep an eye out for her landscapes. “Judy’s landscapes are the best examples of sure, complete paintings in every sense of the word,” says Orwig.“They consist of a warmth and engaging quality that truly define what paintings should be. It leaves me anticipating what comes next.” The art moves the environment, flora and fauna, recognizable landmarks, grandchildren and furniture with an expert flow. Bisgard didn’t want to do a show where you create pieces for it–instead, she picked from her wealth of existing work. “The intention in my work is to convey the richness of both the environment from my own visual experiences of growing up on Maui with its many contrasting views of open fields, mountains and unique buildings from a bygone era and the variety of the local flora,” says Bisgard. “My work tries to interweave this intent while conveying the uniqueness in both the color and texture of the local flora, a sense of the passage of time and the richness of color found on Maui.” I met her at her country home a month ago, to watch her process and techniques. Her home had been transformed into a gallery of sorts with lots of pieces organized into groups. The printmaking stuff alone takes up several rooms.
of white! Then I decided to run something on my printing press. This is ganpi. And I got a bit about the history of moa, which I usually don’t do. I usually don’t do [text] printing, but that was fun.” We walk into the living room, which is filled with her oils, plein air and landscapes.
“
early, I did these years ago. Oil paintings of Ching store, Makawao town. They are all done on site. That makes it different. It’s really different than working in a studio, especially if you’re using a photograph. You’re painting in the wind, sun and rain.” This weekend, I went to the Hui gallery
“
Soon after arriving I’m drawn to a yellow, red and blue piece laying out on the bed. It’s more abstract than some of the other prints. “Oh that?” says Judy when I ask about it. “I don’t know if I’m going to use this. This is a plate that I made. Not many people work this way but you can. It’s like making a plate, a collagraph plate. Etching you build in, but collagraph you build out. I used tape, masking tape–I mean, whatever. I would cover it in glue and stuff and set and clear it. Then I would print it. This is what happens when I print it. People don’t know this because they’ve never seen anything like this done. So I kind of want to show this. It would be fun to show. Things come out of it that you just wouldn’t expect.” Then there was an encaustic that mixed in some printmaking. This is another one that got accolades as a juror’s choice. It’s a good example of her experiment with nature and art as she took the moa, a native Hawaiian fern, and ran it through a press giving an organic relief print. “I don’t know what he [the juror] liked about it,” she says. “It’s a nice piece. It has negative and positive. What I did there was ran the moa right through a printing press and sort of took it off. Then I worked with Japanese papers to create something. It’s hard to get the right coat
In spite of her talent, Judy still considers herself a student of the arts. Over the years, her works have been inspiring examples for others to learn from.
“I love the consistency of oil,” she says. “I love the richness of the color. Here I think a lot of these were stored. These are early plein air paintings. Here is a jacaranda. This is the same jacaranda from a different day. This is O`o farms. These are

to check the progress of the hanging. Both of these unique printmaking examples did end up making it into her show. And there’s an entire wall of her wonderful plein air works. Everything has been framed perfectly since I saw it last.
Clearly, Bisgard is ready for opening night. But beyond her works, Bisgard has long impacted the art scene on Maui with her philanthropic efforts. A board member of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC), she worked on its Art in Architecture program, which influenced the beautiful work you see in and around the buildings at the MACC. She has also volunteered and served on the board at the Hui. And she’s been a commissioner for the State Foundation on Culture and Arts for two four-year terms. “Judy has a boundless energy and is always available and willing to help out with community art projects, ranging from her work at the MACC to Art Maui, countless juried shows she’s participated in and her endless volunteer hours at Hui No‘eau,” says Orwig. “She supports all of the Hui’s numerous visual arts programs. She can be found helping set up for classes, coordinating with staff, helping with displays, exhibits and community art events and serving on committees. From the beginning, Judy has been a constant and reliable resource. I don’t think the Hui would be the place it is without her.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

ing to say that my donuts are healthy,” says Madame. “No, they have calories. They’re fun, they’re all fun.You know if you’re watching your waistline, it’s probably not the right choice. But because there are real ingredients and real flavors you don’t have to feel guilty. It’s not just sugary sweet and nothing else.” Recently Madame Donut branched out into savory donuts as well. “I think I’ve made way too many donuts the past four years,” says Madame. “The savories kind of stemmed from me trying to snack on something else. That was the start of it. My husband thought I was crazy at first. Because I love ham and cheese croissants, and brioche really is more in the family of croissant and puff pastry. The main difference between brioche and croissant is the way you introduce the butter. So I started making a ham brioche dough, and just put the cheese on it and a bit of chili sauce and the Cheesy Hammy was born. I was just like, oh my god this would go so well with beer.” Then Donut Dynamite got Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast. It’s a sourdough roll made from the trim leftover from the donuts. Its got

hat would you do if you had to make a backyard barbecue-themed donut with beer in it? What if 10 grand was on the line to make a good donut? There’s only one person on Maui qualified to answer those questions: Madame Donut of Donut Dynamite in Wailuku. Last year, a brick and mortar shop had been on her to-do list, after operating out of a pop-up trailer and rotating commercial kitchens for the last couple years. “I didn’t want to be in a strip mall,” says Madame Donut. “It’s cold. It’s got no character. I wanted a stand-alone building and I really wanted to be in Kahului or Wailuku.” So when Keoni Smith and Natasha Gould had to call it quits in their Wailuku Manapua Bakery location, it seemed like a good fit. “So when they called me I was like, no way!” she says. “It’s a stand-alone building. It’s older, it’s got character, it’s got history, it’s got a story. They had other offers, they could have made more money. But they were like, ‘We spent some good amount of money on improving the building and we really want to
hand it to people we believe in. We think you will do so well in this space. We think it will be a destination.’ I was like, oh my god, these people are dreaming with us. To me that was the sign that we were in the right place.” But like all sweet and dreamy business plans, cash in hand can be tight. “Money was still an issue,” says Madame Donut. “So Food Channel had been calling me to see if I wanted to get on Sugar Showdown. I had turned them down several times earlier in the year. They called me once more and told me they were offering one more time if I wanted to get on the show. They said it was my last chance to get in the season. They were casting for the last episode. My husband Frank [Parada] and I said we don’t really do this kind of thing. But then we could win $10,000. So we went for it.” Sugar Showdown is a game show that pits three teams of two bakers against each other for the initial round, then the final two teams had a challenge to see who would win the $10,000. “The first secret ingredient was beer,” says Madame. “Frank and I just thought obviously we couldn’t do our usual donuts–they are made of brioche and take much too long for a competition. But I still wanted to have a different base. Most people do cake donuts because they’re fast easy and simple. They
usually start with the same batter. That was not our strategy. We did different bases. The second secret ingredient was chipotle. I think that was my edge through the competition, we went out of the box. Thankfully, we won.” Another edge that Madame Donut has is the fact that she loves to plan her menu with whatever is fresh, so developing creative donut ideas for her ingredients is already part of her usual everyday flair. The menu always has new twists. Donuts like Samoa kine, Molokai sweet potato poi and lemon meringue grace the menu that can change from day to day. “I always think donuts, it’s hard to take seriously–it’s like a fun food,” says Madame. “So to me everything goes together. The fact that the donut isn’t taken so seriously lets me use it as a canvas for my expression.” All of her donuts at Donut Dynamite start with an amazing brioche dough. “Brioche is known to be the rich man’s bread,” says Madame. “That’s the actual term that they use for brioche. It’s enriched, it’s extra butter, it’s extra egg. And by the way, when Marie Antoinette said, ‘Let them eat
Gourmet Donuts
cake’ she didn’t say cake–she said brioche.” In fact, there’s not just one dough. She develops each donut base specific for its flavor. “In the brown butter, I brown the butter first before adding the dough, so it’s not just the topping that’s brown butter,” says Madame. “The topping is a brown butter streusel with cinnamon, caramel and oatmeal. Since the dough itself uses brown butter, it gives it a nuttier, kind of more dense structure.” The maple bacon donut has apple in the dough, though it’s not mentioned in its name or description. It’s all part of her elevated donut plan. “The apples kind of act as a cleanser because of the acidity,” says Madame. “So you don’t really taste the apples. It’s rich but you know it’s like when you eat a cold fatty meat... the apples kind of secretly cleanses that.” There are other surprises, like the fact that the red velvet brioche uses beets to get its spectacular color. “My approach is always like, I’m not go-
an egg, some cheese and ham and she makes a vegetarian version as well. On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays she makes a malasada burger starting at 10:30am. They are madeto-order and ridiculously good. You can order from her website, and pre-order dozens of donuts to make sure you get what you want. She often sells out for the day. “I’m so passionate about this business,” says Madame. “I want to make it a really, really good product. Whatever it is–my donuts, burgers, malasadas, savories–I want to change the way most people think about the donut. It’s not just the donut, you can have a crappy pizza or you can have a really good pizza. Once people start understanding that, it’s something special. It’s not at all what people would think of as a donut. This is really something different.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

aui Tropsicles has been coming to Wailuku First Friday lately, but their cart’s usual hot spot is in Lahaina on the corner of Wainee and Lahainaluna. Owners and partners Jessica Stackpoole and Alexa Caskey thought this would be the perfect spot to launch their bespoke frozen treat business. “As many Maui residents and visitors know, Lahaina is hot pretty much yearround,” says Caskey. “With the plethora of shave ice and gelato scattered across town, we thought to create a twist on the frozen treat. We want to supply a unique, health conscious and sustainable option for those seeking solace from the heat. Popsicles require no plastic bowl or spoon; ours has just a biodegradable stick made of pine and a corn-based plastic bag that decomposes in two weeks.”
Maui Tropsicles designed their treat to have a small carbon footprint. That philosophy extends to all facets of what they do. “Our popsicles are made from whole fruit and use small amounts of Hawaii honey and/or organic cane sugar,” Caskey says. “Most of our menu is completely dairy- and gluten-free, with absolutely nothing artificial. We pride ourselves on being local, wild and organic.” And by wild they mean they harvest in the jungle. “The term ‘wild’ pertains to the fact that we actually go out into the jungle and forage many of the amazing fruits that give us the best inspirations for new flavors,” she says. “There are so many wild guava, lilikoi, starfruit and more just waiting to be blended into delicious Tropsicles! Wild also describes the nature of our flavors, as we go boldly into territories no popsicle has ever been before! Some of our favorite unique flavors are Molokai Purple Sweet Potato Pie, Guava Rosewater and Avocado Creme. And of course, many of us are learning that buying organic is not only the standard
take advantage of what’s in our backyard! And as we like to say, ‘most of our ingredients are so local, they’ve never even ridden in a car.’ Instead they get a ride in just our cute little tricycle powered by our legs. Our signature flavor, Lahaina Local Harvest, demonstrates best how tasty local can be, with banana, mango, papaya, pineapple and a touch of Hawaiian honey.” Although nature designates their flavors, the menu includes Mango chili mint, Pineapple lilikoi, Strawberry guava and creme, Watermelon guava, Avocado creme, Strawberry mango colada, Strawberry goat cheese (using cheese from Surfing Goat Dairy) and their surprising Chocolate chip cookie dough which is vegan, and gluten free. “Our tricycle has a permanent location in Lahaina that is open every day

effort to combine our passions for sustainability, health and culinary arts, we got together and decided to introduce the world to Maui Tropsicles.” Their gourmet popsicles are sold from an impressive and artfully painted bicycle powered cart. This cart makes it to Friday Town parties, fundraisers, community events, festivals, sporting events, private parties and anywhere a sweet handmade frozen treat is appreciated. “At Maui Tropsicles, we make everything from scratch with the utmost intention to honor the bounty of Maui and all her tropical flavors,” says Caskey. “We believe in local first, and extending our resources outward only as necessary. With such an abundance of delicious fruits in close proximity, it seems only natural to

You can’t miss our colorful cart with umbrellas and a blue picnic table! Our menu rotates between over 30 flavors, from which we choose different combinations of six or seven each day. We post the daily menu on our Facebook and Instagram so our loyal followers can get ready for which flavor they’re going to enjoy that day. Return Of The King ‘Kong: Skull Island’ is classic B-Movie fun ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 120 Min.
E
very version of the King Kong story is essentially the same but each has a different idea driving its story. The original, 1933, black and white King Kong is one of the greatest movies ever made, the prototype for every subsequent special effects-driven blockbuster and visible proof that a man-made movie monster can be endearing and believable. The stop-motion effects in the first movie are creaky but still adorable and impressive for their ambition. Best of all, you root for the Big Guy and understand all too well why he adores screen goddess Fay Wray (c’mon, Kong is a romantic–why else would he take the love of his life to the top of the Empire State Building?). My first introduction to the immortal character came in the form of the Dino De Laurentis-produced 1976 version. Despite its epic ambitions, an updated story and a cast that included Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange and Charles Grodin, the award-winning visual effects have aged horribly. Despite how striking it is to see Kong climb the World Trade Center’s twin towers and flirt openly with Lange (who, at one point, asks Kong for his
astrological sign), the film is a dud. Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake brought the character back to its former elegance and old school Hollywood glamour. But it takes too long to get started and Adrien Brody and Jack Black will never be plausible action stars. Still, the heart and excitement of the Beauty and the Beast re-telling were there. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts surprises with his Kong: Skull Island by setting the story in 1973. The 1933 film is about finding hope and wonder amidst The Great Depression, the ‘76 version is a commentary on corporate greed and the ‘05 remake is a tribute to classic Hollywood through digital wizardry. King Kong 2017 is, believe it or not, an on-thenose allegory about the Vietnam War. Samuel L. Jackson stars as a decorated war hero who just survived a tour with his soldiers through Vietnam. Rather than returning stateside, he agrees to one last stint: a couple of scientists (played by John Goodman and Corey Hawkins from Straight Outta Compton) require military protection as they explore Skull Island, with weather patterns not unlike the Bermuda Triangle. Once the large crew (which includes Brie Larson, playing a photographer) infiltrates the violent weather, they quickly find that the island is inhabited by giant monsters.
Seriously, why isn't this movie called 'Viet Kong'?
Every one of these movies stumble out of the starting gate, with too much exposition and set-up for the human characters. VogtRoberts’ film moves swifter and has a tighter pace than Jackson’s, though his approach overall is to mimic the look of graphic novels. This is often effective, as the filmmaker knows to take a pause during a striking, iconic moment. Yet the style leans more towards Zac Snyder than Peter Jackson and so does the screenplay. The dialogue and plotting are B-movie top to bottom, as the actors are stuck reciting brief sentences that were designed for movie trailers and little else. Tom Hiddleston is the dashing lead but the movie clearly needs him more than he needs it. The same is even more true of Larson, who has less to do here than Fay Wray, Jessica Lange and Naomi Watts ever did. Larson’s role should have been played by Megan Fox, not the Oscar winning star of Room. Even John Goodman seems tripped
up by his dumb lines. Thankfully, Jackson isn’t above giving a full-on self parody and gnashing his teeth like a true pro. Then there’s John C. Reilly, stealing the movie by doing a take on Dennis Hopper’s Apocalypse Now role. Reilly is clearly improvising like mad but he still gives a solid, poignant turn. There have been better, smarter versions of this story but I’m still in love with any movie where Reilly brandishes a sword and slashes away at monsters. Kong: Skull Island delivers where it counts and offers a generous helping of monster movie thrills. Anyone who grew up with Rodan, King Kong Vs. Godzilla or Godzilla 1985 will eat this up. Just make sure you sit through all of the end credits for the full effect. The creatures are the real star and they are jaw-dropping. Even in a film where Samuel L. Jackson reprises his most famous Jurassic Park line, the biggest movie star here is the one who can punch-out a helicopter. ■

Sign Language PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Pisceans are champion cuddlers. Most Fish would rather have a snuggle than a screw, if they had to choose. That’s a powerful instinct, actually, and one that’s likely to be quite helpful this week, even if it comes off as a bit oversweet or lame to some people. You see, there are those who think they know what they need–whether it’s a lay, advice, or some retail therapy–but what’s actually going to do the trick is some simple, authentic, honest, down-to-earth affection. And guess who’s just the person to give it to them, whether they’re ready or not? You, of course. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Everyone’s had one of those stomach-churning nights where something you ate didn’t agree with you, and you spent the entire time making trips into the bathroom (or giving up and just camping out there). It’s amazing how much that can throw you for a loop; lack of sleep and nourishment makes you feel incredibly shaky and weak the next day. So you’ve surely experienced how crap you feel when deprived of physical rest and sustenance; why should it be any different emotionally? You need to give yourself time to recharge from exhausting ordeals, and restock the kinds of energy you can actually run on. If you don’t take that time, you’re just looking for trouble. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Watch your step. What looks like a shallow puddle is actually a sinkhole. What you thought might simply wet your socks is liable to plunge you into murky water way over your head. It’s easy enough to avoid, if you’re willing to slow down quite a bit, and make sure that every footfall forward lands on recognizably solid ground. This might be a difficult choice to make, given the speedy clip with which you’ve been able to progress of late, but nevertheless, I suggest you make it. Your other option, naturally, is a full stop.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Every stain has a solution. Crafty launderers know all the tricks. Too bad your memories aren’t so easily expunged. I still think you could be free of that one stubborn stain of remembrance, even if you’ve tried nearly everything. Give it one more go. If all else fails, don’t throw in the towel and just accept that there’ll always be this ugly blotch holding you back. Consider, instead, the last resort when it comes to salvaging an otherwise ruined garment: dying the damn thing. Soak yourself in so many (ideally stronger and better) memories that you couldn’t possibly spare another moment for that one. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Nearly everyone’s overdone it with booze at some point. However, not everything you’ve reacted badly to can be as easily avoided as a certain flavor of alcohol. Sometimes–like this week–you have to push through the retching and distaste and just bear it. I hope you find a way to do that, or you’ll be missing out on some opportunities that come along with. No need to overindulge in the stuff, like last time. But letting yourself at least pretend to enjoy a sip or two would not only be a good move on many levels, it’s also quite likely to build character.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Remember when you used to catch bugs or frogs and put them in jars for study, when you were a kid? I’ve yet to meet a Sag who hasn’t at least once or twice been ruled by their curiosity in this way. Eventually, though, as you peered in at your victim, you couldn’t help identifying with them to some extent, and ultimately releasing them. I admire this about you; familiarity, for you, doesn’t breed contempt (although, occasionally you are subject to boredom) so much as affection. If you find yourself shying away from someone this week, for whatever reason, resist the urge. Move closer to them instead. Even if you’re never able to like them, you may, eventually, love them, just a little.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Every Cancer has a private fantasy of ultimate (and ultimately unrealistic) domesticity. Perhaps you wish you could come home from work to find dinner on the table and a drink at hand; you put your feet up for a massage and take the time to talk over the day with whoever’s there. As far as fantasies go, this one’s pretty tame, but somehow as difficult to manifest as more convoluted ones involving multiple people and props. Nevertheless, you deserve to at least once in a great while have your rather modest wish granted. This week might be your turn. The key? Ask nicely. Bargain. And never, ever be ungracious.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
When a fashion designer crafts a new outfit, they usually do a number of sketches and mock-ups first. Even though no one will ever use or even see these first few incarnations of the dress, they are vital steps in the process. Your confidence has gotten out of hand, this week. You think you can jump straight from the idea to the finished product, without the whole trial and error thing in between. Wrong. You think you know exactly where you’re headed, and I admire your vision. But not taking the time to make the journey there would be a mistake–because it’s that very journey that’s likely to change (and improve) your ultimate destination–and you.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Your situation is like one of those macro photographs of something in intense close-up. It’s impossible to tell what you’re looking at–a vulva? An elbow? A flower? It could be virtually anything, so it’s almost impossible to choose the correct reaction to it. Surprise? Admiration? Humor? Shock? Basically your only realistic option is to keep your cool and develop your patience. It may take a long time for things to properly unfold this week, ages before you’re able to get some real perspective. Don’t jump the gun, though, as tempting as that might be. Stay absolutely chill and hold on until you really know what you’re looking at. Then act.

CLASSIC ROCK
One rule when you’re climbing or hiking is never put your hands or feet somewhere that you can’t see them. You never know what’s lurking just out of sight in the shadow of a rock or beneath a clump of long grass. Remember that this week as you venture into truly unexplored territory. There’s a lot of wild and dangerous shit out here, and it could really mess you up, if you’re not careful. I’m not too worried about you, though, my pretty Goats. If anyone has the patience and stamina to watch their step from start to finish, it’s certainly you. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
You can’t always be Prince(ss) Valiant, rushing in to save the day. Sometimes it’s possible to gallop in on your white charger, vanquish the beast, and play hero to the innocent virgin. Sometimes it’s not. The trick is determining which is which. Unfortunately, you’ve guessed wrong enough times before that now you’re full of self-doubt. Is this a chance to shine, or to get trampled in the mud? Astrologically, it’s likely the former. Trust your gut, though; it’s ultimately the real gauge. However, if it seems like you’re in a position to swoop in and rescue someone in need, you almost certainly can.
So now that you’re getting better at discerning when to put out fires, and when to let them burn, you can move on to the next thing: when to actually start them. It’s not fair for you to always be reactive, letting some of the more fiery signs do all the heavy lifting and motivating. Every once in awhile it’s your turn to step up and light fires under the asses of those who sorely need your inspiration. You know who they are. By leaving them to their own devices, you’re actually letting them down. Even if it doesn’t come naturally to you, Water Bearer, please pull out those matches and get t work.
