MAYOR TALKS, CRITICS MOVE TO IMPEACH

Overheard “The sleepiness will go away once you go to sleep.” -Guy talking to another guy at a bank in Kihei, Mar. 10

When I asked County Communications Director Rod Antone if he’d like to comment on the impeachment petition, he emailed back, “Not really.”

TOURISM IMPACTS WEST MAUI FINALLY FOR SALE On a happier note, the new book Tourism Impacts West Maui, published by the North Beach-West Maui Benefit Fund at the end of 2016, is finally available from University of Hawaii Press (which distributes the book). “West Maui has been the site of rapid, drastic changes to landscape, communities, governance, and economy. A couple hours before Mayor Alan Arakawa gave his annual State of the County address on Thursday, Mar. 9, a tidy group of residents gathered at the entrance to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC). Carrying signs and upside-down Hawaii state flags, they were there to express their anger, as one demonstrator put it, at Arakawa. Their numbers swelled from about 50 at 4:30pm to nearly double that an hour later, but their message was clear: the mayor has to go. Their signs they carried were about what you’d expect. “Respect the Culture.” “Iao is Sacred.” “County of Maui Guilty of Desecration.” Despite the heated emotions that formed the foundation of the protest, the gathering was chill. The group of three (sometimes four) Maui Police Officers who milled about a few dozen yards back from the protesters looked, if anything, bored. Children played on the grass. One demonstrator brought sweet potatoes from her yard for everyone. Another brought her pet pig Pua. Maui County Councilmember Elle Cochran walked around the demonstration at one point, chatting with the protesters. The most militant behavior I saw came from a handful of sign-carrying demonstrators who did a s-l-o-w march across the street in front of every car wanting to turn into the MACC. As proof of their intentions, one organizer began collecting signatures on a new Petition for Impeachment of Mayor Alan Arakawa. Dated Mar. 9, the three-page petition states that Arakawa is guilty of “malfeasance, misfeasance and nonfeasance” in regards to his authorizing the removal of rocks in Iao Valley following the flash flood storm of Sept. 13, 2016. “The Mayor worked outside the scope of his authority under the emergency proclamations to protect the public’s safety, and instead took advantage of the emergency situation to use the Iao river

bed as a rock quarry for large quantities of harvested material for crushing,” states the petition. “The public’s safety was not in jeopardy from the river bed and boulders that had lived there for ages. By working outside the scope of his authority within the river bed, on mostly private land, to conduct emergency work within Iao Valley, the Mayor is guilty of illegal misappropriation of public funds.” The removal of rocks–which many native Hawaiians consider to be sacred–from the Iao stream bed following the flood has sparked outrage from a few activists since it took place. Ironically, Arakawa himself recently poured gasoline on the fire by making outrageously condescending comments on Hawaii News Now. “[T]here’s no such thing as sacred rocks,” Arakawa said on HNN on Feb. 17. “The monarchy, starting with Kamehameha… declared Christianity the religion of Hawaii. In Christianity, if I remember the 10 Commandments correctly, thou shall have no false god before me. There are no sacred rocks in that religion.” It took two weeks for Arakawa to apologize for his remarks (which had reportedly spurred the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to issue a statement on the considerable importance native Hawaiians place on

rocks like those found in Iao), though he continued to insist that removing the rocks was necessary for public safety. He reiterated that at the conclusion of his State of the County address last night. “Before we wrap up tonight, I would like to thank the men and women who worked tirelessly to fix Kepaniwai Park, our Flood Control along Iao and Kahoma, as well as other areas last year,” Arakawa said in the speech. “Our county crews worked fast and hard to get repairs underway, at times placing their own lives in danger. Timing was critical, because right after that flood we had another flood event on New Year’s Eve, which caused no damage due to the repairs made to our flood control. Without those repairs, flood waters could have damaged homes from Iao Parkside to Paukukalo, and businesses all along Lower Main Street.” As it was, Arakawa’s State of the County address wasn’t bad on the whole. It was mostly just a list of projects the Arakawa Administration is either proposing or working on. But the big takeaway was his revelation that his administration is “looking at closing down operations at our Waiehu Municipal Golf Course” because he says it loses about $3 million a year. In any case, the impeachment petition references Section 13-13 of the County of Maui Charter. “Appointed or elected officers may be impeached for malfeasance, misfeasance or nonfeasance in office or violation of the provisions of Article 10 (Code of Ethics),” states the petition. “Such impeachment proceedings shall be commenced in the Circuit Court of the Second Circuit, State of Hawaii.” One organizer told me they’re trying to gather 5,000 signatures, and have only just started.

lection addresses the ways tourism both changed West Maui and how changes brought to West Maui made a tourist economy viable,” states the UH Press website. “Each chapter tells a story of the ways different communities experienced the transformation of West Maui from an agrarian area into one dominated by industrial tourism. While focused on sitespecific histories of West Maui, this volume is of significant interest to tourism studies, regional and urban planning, and Hawai‘i and Hawaiian historians.” The book is edited by Lance D. Collins and Bianca Isaki. It retails for $20. Go to UHPress.hawaii.edu for more information. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Maui Humane Society plans to close its overnight receiving kennels next month. Starting April 1, all stray and owner-surrendered animals must be brought into the shelter during normal business hours, Monday through Saturday, 11am-6pm. In the case of an after-hours emergency, you can still call MHS Humane Enforcement at 808-877-3680 ext. 211 for them to pick up a stray animal. MHS officials say that in recent years, the animal sheltering industry has moved away from overnight receiving kennels, otherwise known as drop-boxes. “We feel strongly about the work we do and the animals we help,” said Jerleen Bryant, CEO of MHS. “Having a place for animals to be left in the middle of the night with no information, sometimes sick and injured, is not in the animal’s best interest. Closing the overnight kennels will require anyone who is turning in an animal to come into the shelter or contact Humane Enforcement to schedule a pick-up which in turn, will provide us with important information about the animals being surrendered into our care.” Last year, 1,062 animals were dropped off to the MHS after hours. Sixty-three percent (676) did not have any information about the animal, its health or circumstances, according to the MHS. Any and all information–such as where the animal was found– could be useful in helping return an animal to its home. In the case of owner-surrenders, having medical records, and behavior and personality details can help move animals through the admissions process more ef-

ficiently and help get them into a new adoptive home faster, according to MHS. For more information about surrendering your pet or what to do if you have found (or lost) an animal, please visit the Maui Humane Society website at Mauihumanesociety.org.

Lahainaluna High School held its annual English Speaking Union Shakespeare Monologue Competition on Feb. 17 with the assistance of Theatre Theatre Maui and Shakespeare coach Katherine Cloutier. Coach Cloutier was accompanied and assisted by actor Rick Schneideman. The students were also encouraged by their drama teacher Shan Stewart and the entire Lahainaluna drama class. The seven student team was comprised of Emily Lorenz-Bradley, Zoe Hirschon, Kesha Pierson, Kuuipoikaheepueone Gouveia, Shawn Rabino, Erin Nishimura and Valeria Arnaez. Ninth grader Pierson placed 1st with her portrayal of Cleopatra. Arnaez (who portrayed Desdemona) placed 3rd, and Hirschon (who portrayed Imogen) placed 2nd. The students performed their chosen monologues before an audience of theatrical peers and judges. Three well-known Maui drama actors–Bunt Burkhalter, Ute Finch and Michael Pulliam–were this year’s judges. Pulliam and Finch have judged the competition at Lahainaluna several times. This year marks Burkhalter’s first time on the judging panel. “It truly warms my heart to see these students spend the time and energy to meet, and better yet, to become masters of, at least, small segments of such a great body of English literature and drama,” Burkhalter said. “In my ever-humble opinion, Shakespeare was the most significant and important person of his century and it is so gratifying to see these students dig in and appreciate his art.”

rant’s (belated) seventh birthday party. The Kihei restaurant had been closed for nearly two months following a damaging fire in Fall of 2016 that ripped through the restaurant’s kitchen. The owners worked diligently with their contractors and employees to get back up and running in just 40 days. To celebrate that effort, the restaurant’s owners thought it was important to celebrate and give back to the community. The re-opening and belated birthday celebration was marked by a Hawaiian blessing by Kimokeo Kapahulehua. Chef Jaron Blosser said the blessing was a way to let go of the stress from Fall, and welcome in some positive energy as the restaurant evolves and moves forward. Also, as part of the celebration, Three’s offered customers big discounts, and maintained their annual birthday tradition of donating a quarter of the day’s sales to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The donation is one example of how the “spirit of giving” matters at Three’s; the restaurant also has an ongoing Kama‘aina Giveback Program to help a different community cause every month. In 2016, Three’s donated more than $10,000 to various local nonprofits and beneficiaries as part of its Kama‘aina Giveback Program. “Any customer who’s a local can come in and they get a kama‘aina discount, then we match that same discount and donate to a beneficiary of the month,” said chef Travis Morrin. The restaurant has donated to Team Trucker, American Heart & Stroke Association, Pacific Cancer Foundation and the Humane Society. Giving back is a way to briefly touch on all of these causes that are important to our community, Morrin said. ■

News Of The Weird U-S-A! U-S-A!

WAIT, WHAT?

Although discouraging the marriage of children in developing nations has been U.S. foreign policy for years, a data-collecting watchdog group in America disclosed in February that 27 U.S. states have no minimum marriage ages and estimates that an average of almost 25,000 children age 15 and under are permitted to marry every year (“estimates” because some states do not keep records by age). Child marriage is often allowed in the U.S. if parents approve, although no such exemption is made in foreign policy, largely to curb developing nations’ “family honor” marriages–which often wreck girls’ chances for self-actualizing. (However, “family honor” is still, in some states, the basis for allowing U.S. child marriages, such as with “shotgun” weddings.)

Researchers including Rice University biochemist John Olson revealed in a February journal article that one reason a man avoided anemia even though he had a gene mutation that weakened his hemoglobin was because he has been a tobacco smoker–that the carbon monoxide from smoke had been therapeutic. His daughter, with the same gene mutation, did develop anemia since she never smoked (although Olson suggested other ways besides smoking to strengthen hemoglobin, such as by massive vitamin C).

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS

Just before Christmas, Tammy Strickland, 38, was arrested in Polk County, Florida, and charged with stealing 100 toys from a Toys for Tots collection box. Then in February, thieves unbolted and stole a PlayStation from the children’s cancer ward at Wellington Hospital in New Zealand. And Judith Permar, 56, who was found dead, stuck in a clothing donation drop-off box in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, in February (a result, police said, of trying to “steal” items), had driven to the box in her Hummer.

Glenn Schloeffel, vice president of the Central Bucks school board in a Philadelphia suburb, recommended that science books be viewed skeptically on “climate change” because teenage “depression” rates have been increasing. Surely, he said, one factor depressing students is reading all that alarming climate-change data. And Seattle’s Real Estate Services rental agency has informed the family of the late Dennis Hanel that it would not return Hanel’s security deposit following his January death because Hanel had not given the lease-required “notice” giving up his apartment. (He had cancer, but died of a heart attack. Washington state law requires only that the landlord provide an explanation why it is keeping the deposit.)

RUNAWAY MATH John Haskew, who told investigators that he was “self-taught on the banking industry,” evidently thought he might succeed making bogus wire transfers to himself from a large (unidentified) national bank, in the amount of $7 billion. He pleaded guilty in February in Lakeland, Florida. (He said he thought he “deserved” the money.) And Katherine Kempson, 49, deciding to pay “cash” for a $1.2 million home, forged (according to York County, Pennsylvania, deputies) a “proof of funds” letter from the Members 1st credit union. Home sales are, of course, highly regulated formalities, and several attempted “closings” were halted when her money kept not showing up. One deputy told a reporter, “I’m guessing that she probably didn’t think it through.”

The highest bail amount ever ordered in America–$4 billion for murder suspect Antonio Willis–was briefly in play in Killeen, Texas, in February, set by Bell County’s elected Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown. Bail was reduced 10 days later to $150,000 by a district court judge, prompting Brown to acknowledge that she set the “$4 billion” to call attention to Texas’ lack of bail standards, which especially punishes indigent arrestees with little hope of raising even modest amounts when accused of minor crimes.

PEOPLE WITH UNDERDEVELOPED CONSCIENCES

PHALLIC NEWS FROM OVERSEAS In February, doctors at Narayana Health City in Bangalore, India, were successful in a five-hour, 20-specialist surgery normalizing an infant born with the chromosomal abnormality “polymelia”–which resulted in four legs and two penises. Doctors praised the parents, from rural Puladinni village, for recognizing the issue as “medical” and not as “superstition.” And in February, police in southern Bangladesh arrested a family that used a fake penis to convince neighbors that the family had the powers of genies (“djinns”). The villagers had known the family had a girl, but overnight the genies had “changed” her into a “boy,” thus frightening the villagers into making offerings to the family.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS Unhappy Ending: Clifford Jones, 58, was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Detroit in January, having lost control of his car because, according to Michigan State Police, he was distracted by watching pornography on his cellphone. He was also not wearing pants. And Leslie Ray Charping, 75, of Galveston, Texas, lived “much longer than he deserved,” according to his daughter, in a widely shared obituary in February, in a life that “served no obvious purpose.” The death notice referenced his “bad parenting” and “being generally offensive,” and closed with “Leslie’s passing proves that evil does in fact die.” ■

MARCH ON,

MAUI! The Women’s March was a great success– NOW WHAT DO WE DO? By Lantana Hoke

O

n Jan. 22, 2017, millions of people all over the world marched in the largest demonstration in American history. In over 500 cities in the U.S. and another hundred around the world, people gathered in protest and solidarity the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. And it all started here on Maui.

10 MARCH 16, 2017

The spark of the march came from Hana resident Teresa Shook, who posted the idea on Facebook last November. From that seed grew the Women’s March on Washington, with sister marches planned all over the world. No one was sure what the marches would look like before they happened. On Maui, thousands gathered on the University of

Hawaii Maui College great lawn. Robin Pilus was shocked. “What I had initially envisioned was a small, dedicated group,” says Pilus, who was one of five women, all private citizens with no political or organizational affiliations, who helped organize the march. But the Women’s March on Maui took on a life of its own, and Pilus estimates that around 5,000 people showed up. “It was

amazingly organic,” Pilus said. It was an inclusive event with performances, speeches, creative, funny and poignant signs, and a short march with which the Maui Police Department was “amazingly helpful” in helping to orchestrate traffic. The feeling was one of hope–for many, the first since the election. “I have always believed that it is our responsibility to

trying to give Maui community members an opportunity to fan the flame. There was no single direct aim of the march. Some marched for solidarity, camaraderie, protest, to assert dissent, resistance. Some marched for women’s reproductive health rights. And the after-

math has a similar goal of being whatever people want it to be. There’s a difference between a party and a movement. A movement implies action, and that’s what the women are encouraging. In a philosophy of free-market activism, they are encouraging Maui community members to get involved with any cause they care about. Whether environmental, social, national or local, “We just want to encourage people to do something,” says Lee. “It’s messy,” Vial admits. One action for that to happen are “Huddles,” which are popping up in different parts of Maui. The Huddles are an opportunity for like-minded individuals to get together to make action plans, phone calls, talk or even just network with each other to meet others in the community. At a recent Huddle that Vial attended in Haiku, the message was that the participants wanted to focus on “positive, non-partisan, local action” such as focusing on banning sunscreens that damage coral reefs, rather than resistance. The organizer of the Huddle says that “for now, it’s all grass roots happy chaos,” and the group is comfortable with that. That’s how change starts.

of science as a belief to feel a deep frustration and a need to do something about it. The March for Science organizers had reached out to Pilus to get her take on it, and she’s offering them some guidance. “It’s more impactful when there are many opportunities for people to participate in,”

said Lee, recognizing that people have different motivations for getting involved. “I want Maui people to get out of their shells,” said Vial. Another project the women are working on is Wahine Week, April 10-15. It’s a serious of lunches, workshops and events to empower and encourage women in the community. “We’re not claiming to have all the answers, or know exactly the right way forward,” said. Cox. “I just want the Women’s March to help create a kinder and more inclusive community,” Pilus added. Pilus continues to stay involved and hope others in the community will, too. “I would ask [Maui community members] to continue to stay informed and inquisitive,” she said. “Be open to positive communications, be open to entertaining other people’s ideas. Stay involved, and keep up with what’s happening with the Women’s March so we can continue to be a collective.” “We’re all busy with our lives, but we need to get out there, and get active in our community,” says Lee. “Get engaged in some way–join anything. Get out of your Maui shell.” Pilus said the march showed her the power of the individual and the power of the collective. “This started with one person, and it spread to seven continents and millions of people,” she said. Where it ends is up to us. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

fight inequality and to choose education rather than ignorance and denial, but I was surprised to see the amount of likeminded men and women who showed up,” says Jessica Nakasone-Koki, a nonprofit and Community Client Liaison who marched with her teenage daughter. “The march inspired me to persist and take action more frequently.” There’s been a shift on Maui in the last five or so years. There’s more energy and empowerment with collective action, especially around local politics, from GMOs to Iao Valley to land use rights. At a recent community meeting about TEACH LLC and the planned usage of the old Maui High School, the Paia Community Center was packed to overflowing, with the line of people giving testimony reaching out the door. Frustration, nationally and locally, has inspired even those who never considered themselves activists to start speaking up. Six weeks after the march, I sat down with some of the women of the Women’s March on Maui to talk about impact, ideas and what’s next for political action and organization for the participants of the Women’s March on Maui. We met at Front of House in Kahului, a new event resource center created by Aleta Lee, owner of Epic Lighting. She frames the place as a hosting spot for nonprofits and other community groups. They use the space to accommodate events and assist in planning. All the women are busy with day jobs, but find the time and energy to devote to political side projects. Deborah Vial is a realtor who marched in Washington and has since become politically active on Maui for the first time in her life. “I became unbubbled,” said Vial. “I realized we should wake up and speak up.” “We just wanted to be heard,” says Pilus. I asked her if she believed the message was heard. “Yes,” she said. “Even if we just heard each other, that’s important. It was just as much as an encouragement for each other as an opposition. Trump represented misogyny, disrespect for persons with disabilities and racism, and people just needed to feel empowered.” There was a burst of energy after the election channeled through the march. “We don’t want that ember to die,” says Jen Cox, a marketing and communications consultant who attended a march in Santiago, Chile. “We can’t do everything, but we can all do something,” said Cox. The women are

Large crowd at the Women’s March on Maui

“That’s where this is going,” Vial said. “People are going to start participating in their communities more. There are all these small things you can do that are positive. We’re all getting worn out on ‘resisting.’ The idea is to engage in a positive way.” Anyone can start or participate in a Huddles through the Women’s March on Maui website, with opportunities to reconvene. Social media played a cornerstone role in the movement and social media continues to be a means of connection and organization. “We are just trying to encourage action–whatever it is that fuels your fire, do it,” says Lee. And the Women’s March has been a part of inspiring others to want to organize. Nationally, lawyers and scientists are mobilizing to march nationally, and local organizers have stepped up to plan a March for Science here on Maui on Earth Day, April 22. The politicization of environmental issues, coupled with new Environmental Protection Agency Director Scott Pruitt denying that carbon emissions have a role in climate change, has led educators, scientists and really anyone who doesn’t think

shipping and traveling, too. The cookies have a long shelf life, and you can freeze them. They are really good if you want to take them anywhere, travel with them for gifts. You can also buy a lot and freeze them. As long as you don’t open the bag you can keep it for up to six months. It was really hard to figure out the packaging. What I would really like to do is seal each cookie. That is what I wanted to do from the beginning but it is really expensive for the little bags. I would need a machine that seals each one, kind of like Big Island Candies.” Fukuoka says she can individually package special orders for weddings or events. If you want to create an order to ship out, she does all of the arrangements for that as well, and takes shipments to the post office. It’s all online at Mauimanjookies.net too. For her fresh baked breads, you order during the week for pick up on Friday. “My bread recipe took about two years of trial and error,” says Fukuoka. “It’s the texture of bread that I like to eat. It’s the kind of food

ike’s Mini Mart isn’t your usual mini mart in Kahului. One of the first things you’ll notice is the magnificent aroma of baking cookies. Next you’ll notice the rows of cookies among the stand-up coolers housing sodas, juices and energy drinks. In fact, all of the shelves are dedicated to the Maui Manjookies, a product that proprietor Jannelle Fukuoka developed herself as a gift for friends and family. “I would rather bake more than cook, for sure,” says Fukuoka. “I like cooking too, and I started with plate lunches here in the Mini Mart but I just moved more into the cookies. When you have to cook for a crowd it’s different. I didn’t like it as much. You know what’s good about the baking? Cookies stay fresh for a long time, versus food. You can gift it better. It’s a good gift item. Nowadays people just go to the store and buy things. They don’t make

things anymore. So I really liked that I could make something for my friends and family and give it to them for Christmas. Things that they liked to eat, but couldn’t get anywhere else. That got me baking.” Little by little after she opened Mike’s Mini Mart, she phased out an array of plate lunches, salads and sandwiches to focus on the Manjookie. “I think the thing is people get confused,” says Fukuoka. “They think the Manjookie is a manju but it is not. That is why I named it Manjookie. People ask me how I came up with the name. Well, it looks like a manju but it tastes like a cookie. It’s not really a cookie because it’s a cross between a manju and a cookie. It’s my own recipe. It looks like a manju but it doesn’t taste anything like that traditional Japanese treat. It’s more like a pastry. It’s kind of like a little pie with my own fruit that I make. I make everything from scratch.” The hybrid inspiration comes from her grandmother’s and mother’s recipes, but Fukuoka says she tweaked it a lot to make it to her taste. “The traditional manju is bland to me,” says Fukuoka. “My mom and my grandma

were born in Japan. I haven’t travelled there. They had their own manju recipes, but I found them super-bland and really traditional. So when I had my grandma try my recipe, she said, ’That is not manju, but it tastes pretty good!’ I took the basic recipe and recreated it to make it my own, but with my own taste. I had been influenced by French pastries, and I liked my stuff sweeter.” The Manjookie started as a hobby, and she would bake it and give it away as gifts. But as people caught on to it, they started to ask her to bake them and she started taking custom orders to cover her costs. Then she thought her mini mart would be the perfect place to bake and market them. Now she has a few locations. They’re sold at Matsu Restaurant, Kahului Airport and Pukalani Superette. But the most flavors, selection and specialty breads that come out on Friday are all at her Kahului location, where she also bakes them. Everything is handmade from the fillings to the cookie crust.

Cookie jars and bags are all shippable gifts Her Manjookie flavors are Apricot, Azuki Bean, Blueberry, Cranberry, Coconut, Guava-Apricot, Lilikoi-Pineapple, Lima Bean, Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter dipped in Chocolate, Strawberry, Strawberry-LilikoiPineapple and Sweet Potato. These unique flaky pillows melt in your mouth. Then there are her cookies. Crisp, delicious, and unique as well. They come in Almond, Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut, Coffee Cookie, Corn Flake, Cranberry Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Creamy Peanut Butter, Maui Hawaiian Cookie, Mocha Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Shortbread, Sprinkle Cookie (Kids Cookie),Shortbread, and Shortbread macadamia nut. “The most popular flavor right now is the lilikoi pineapple,” says Fukuoka. “Peanut butter is very popular, too.” She spent quite a bit of time researching her packaging, too. “The bags are really good because they keep my products fresh and they are really good for shipping out,” says Fukuoka. “That is why I went with these particular bags. For shelf life,

I want to eat. Soft, chewy and dense. Not too sweet. It’s an all-around bread, very versatile dough. You can use it as a dinner roll, or stuff it, or use it as a sweet bread for anpan. I can do manapua, chicken curry, hot dogs.” The day I visited she made a hot dog bun with a sweet honey mustard barbeque sauce. It was so good. She sells them by the piece or you can order half dozen or full dozen. As for the Manjookies, they come in bags starting at $8 or larger jar starting at $11.50. Follow her Instagram (@mauimanjookies) to find out when she makes her chocolate-dipped versions. “If I don’t bake one day, I get so behind,” says Fukuoka. “I have to bake every day or my inventory just drops. I have to constantly bake! But it’s always fresh. I think one of the secrets to my texture is because it’s hand-rolled. But it’s a lot of work for each cookie.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

'Logan' The final Wolverine film is very brave, but never fun ★★★★★ Rated R / 137 Min.

H

ugh Jackman has decided to hang up the Adamantium claws for good after this, his latest and reportedly final X-Men thriller. After nearly two decades of increasingly bigger, hit and miss sequels, as well as prequels, off-shoots, stand-alone vehicles and cameos, Jackman’s Logan is as direct, spare and no-nonsense as its title. Jackman’s Logan is no longer The Wolverine but an aged, tired, kicked around and glum ex-superhero, working as a limo driver and taking care of the ailing Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart). The discovery of a little girl (Dafne Keen), who demonstrates mutant abilities that match Logan’s, inspires the two former X-Men to head off on a cross-country chase. With truck loads of smarmy villains in pursuit, Logan and Professor X struggle to protect the girl and ponder whether their unknowable destination will only lead to the end of their mutant era. Director James Mangold’s film is an ambitious, bold risk. One can admire how the supposedly final Wolverine film is not only dark

and ultra-violent but also ugly.Yet, the decision to make a R-rated X-Men movie comes as a slap in the face to a core member of the film’s fan base: children. Seriously, Mom and Dad: do not take your kids to see this. If Deadpool was a giddy assault on good taste, then here’s a similarly crass, no-holds-barred comic book yarn, but without the cushion of self-referencing humor. This is the third collaboration between Jackman and Mangold (the first is the bestforgotten Kate & Leopold). While they once again are striving to surpass the expectations of modern comic book movies, this one is full of clichés and choices that don’t work. Bringing back the X-23 angle was especially unwise and since when does Professor X have as big a potty mouth as Logan? The creative peaks for this franchise are Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past from 2014 and, particularly for Jackman and Mangold, their 2013 collaboration, The Wolverine. Despite an admittedly silly ending, it contains the Hiroshima opener and bullet train chase, sequences that are minimasterpieces. That film has an elegance and intelligence in the way it addresses Logan’s existence as a living breathing weapon. Logan, on the other hand, is a neo-western

Sweet! Is this where they're showing that new Wonder Woman movie?

that over-uses its R-rating and doesn’t entirely connect on an emotional level. Mangold has covered this thematic territory before, particularly in his 1997 masterpiece Cop Land. Despite references to Shane and Johnny Cash playing over the ending credits, it’s hard to think of a western in any age this shamelessly gory. Making this a hard-R and (if you can believe this) even more violent than John Wick: Chapter Two, Mangold has certainly made a gritty, nasty piece of work. It’s also business as usual, both as a comic book movie and as a road/chase drama. The heart of the film isn’t newcomer Keen’s good-yet-limited work but Stewart’s superb turn. Following his equally surprising villain role in last year’s Green Room, Stewart once again shows us something we’ve never seen him do before. Jackman is excellent as

always, hitting the demanding scenes are hard as one of his gym routines. He’s been playing this role off and on since 2000, has always given it everything he’s got and, if this is his swan song, goes out swinging like a champ. On the other hand, I recall another razor clawed super-star combo, Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, announcing retirement... then coming back for two more movies. Logan starts strong, builds its story and characters nicely, takes some wrong turns, then becomes redundant and tiresome. Here’s something I’ve never thought before while watching an X-Men movie: “aw, not another action sequence!” The novelty here is that Wolverine is now the Willy Loman of the Marvel Universe and this is his blood-soaked Death of a Salesman. Logan is an admirable stretch but it’s never fun. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You could live happily on an island by yourself, if you had to. The trick is, you’d have to have no chance of escape or rescue. In that case, you’d adapt and even thrive. But possessing even a glimmer of hope might poison the whole thing–instead of making the best of things, and learning to enjoy what you can in the situation, you’d obsess over the (unlikely) way out of it. Can you see how having options can occasionally be bad for you? Please, when presented with some this week, do your best to pretend they don’t exist. I promise, you’ll almost certainly be happier for it. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

An Aries walking around with an empty belly? How is this happening? Usually, you experience a need and you fill it, no matter what gets in your way. So what could possibly convince you to deprive yourself? A potential love? A principle? Some authority figure? (Yeah, right.) Or could it be that you’ve already grasped the point of this week’s lesson–sometimes it feels better to sacrifice what you have (or could have) just to give it someone else. Give up something you want this week, and make sure someone who needs it gets it. The rumblings in your tummy won’t matter in the slightest–even the faintest whispered “thank you” will be able to drown them out.

or flipped upside-down. It’s kind of gimmicky, I know, but it nevertheless reminds me of you–how you can appear to be your own polar opposite depending on when and where someone is looking at you. Bear this in mind when someone reacts to you this week in a totally unexpected way–it’s probably more a reflection of where they’re coming from and how they’re seeing you than anything real about you. However, practice patience and compassion, instead of dismissing them out of hand. If you can talk them around to seeing something like the “real” you (whoever that is), you’ll be deeply thankful you bothered.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Here’s to your glamour and flair, Libra. Whatever you do, from the noble to the ignoble, you do with style. This is why some of you end up manifesting a world more superficial than substantial; the people around you are so dazzled by your methods that they don’t notice the (lack of) content beneath. Although they may not care, I know you do. If you haven’t exactly been living up to your own private standards, this week is a good time to remedy that. Most of those around you may not be any more or less impressed when your actions and intentions shift from selfish to altruistic, but I guarantee, it’ll make a difference to you. And your shine? That can only get brighter as you feel better.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

You know why you have to be a leader this week? Because you’re in a position to be one. Maybe it’s because you know things others don’t, or simply because you can see the situation from a wider perspective. Perhaps it’s just because they want or need you to take control. It might just be because you can do a good job and you know it (even if some don’t). Whatever the reason, please don’t deny the obvious role you’re to take in all the things happening around you. When the reins are presented (or otherwise available) to you, please grab them. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You’re sometimes a bit like Frankenstein’s monster: made up of dozens of assorted pieces that don’t necessarily cooperate well with each other–in fact many of them compete and conflict, rebel and resist. While this may be conceptually fascinating, it’s exhausting in practice. You’re constantly wondering how to get all your different parts to start pulling in the same direction, so you can get on with your life, instead of regularly sabotaging your own efforts. The whole answer to this question will require many years to discover, but a juicy helpful clue, at least, should present itself this week. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

One of these things is not like the others; one of these things does not belong… Most of the stuff you’re doing is helping you become a better person or proceed towards your dreams. The other activity (or three) you’re engaging in isn’t exactly bad, it’s just not adding anything especially to your life, big-picturewise. This week, take notice of which of your pursuits aren’t truly part of the master plan. There’s no need to completely eliminate them (at least not yet), but once you see how much time they’re taking away from what really counts, you might want to cut down. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Being stalked is only fun in theory. Drop your secret fantasy about it; that oversized ego will get you in trouble this week, otherwise. Remember that any time a lover has displayed the slightest clinginess, you’ve run for the hills. Even worshipful adoration got tiresome, didn’t it? This week you’re due to receive the kind of attention that could easily explode into something more extreme, if you let your perverse ego have its way. Don’t encourage your potential admirer(s), despite the temptation. Nip this one now, or it’ll come back to bite you, hard, and sooner than you think. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

An ambigram is a word that can be read in more than one way–for instance it can say one thing when simply read, and another when reflected in a mirror,

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

I’m sure you’ve noticed how our world is becoming less and less free. How small will the boxes we’re forced to live inside become before we find them unendurable? And will we then be too weak to actually break free? Please recognize that when even you–who can find ways to flourish in the most limiting circumstances–feel cramped and anxious by the strictures that bind you, the rest of us are really in trouble. Can you help yourself (and us) break out? There’s no time to waste. This week, please devote your considerable resourcefulness and energy towards finding ways to protect and expand what freedoms we still have.

VOTED BEST

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Most everyone ties their shoelaces basically the same way, but why? There are actually many knot variations that are faster to tie, more secure, or both. It’s one of those things we almost never think about or question. Would our lives change much if we did? Probably not. But you never know. What I do know is that there are at least two other things you do on automatic, without wondering if there’s a “better” (More efficient? More happiness-inducing?) way. If you can identify them, and switch over to some improved method, your life would change, in at least eleven good (if not mindblowing or earth-shattering) ways. If that’s not a good ratio of effort to result, I don’t know what is.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Over a decade ago, Kyle MacDonald started with one red paperclip on offer. He traded that for a wooden fish pen, then a handmade doorknob, then a Coleman stove. He continued “trading up” from there, and a year later, after 14 trades, ended up with a house. Granted he made “something” out of “nothing” mostly because people were charmed by the idea and kindly helping him out. But you could do something similar (if on a smaller, less grand scale) this week, if you were but to try. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

When planning your next move, don’t be too ambitious. I know jumping into deep water has worked for you before, but it’s just not a good idea this time. The water’s likely to be so cold that you’ll be climbing out again before you’ve even had time to think, and after your chilling experience, you’ll be that much more reluctant to try again. I suggest the torturous but manageable strategy of wading in a few inches at a time. It’ll take ages to get to where you want to be, and it won’t be a pleasant process, but at least you’ll actually get there, eventually.
