I really hoped there would be more money in there

HAWAII LEGISLATURE HAS FUN WITH UNFUNDED LIABILITIES And now for a subject that I’m sure is near and dear to your heart: public employee pensions and health benefits. I know, I know–there’s nothing sexier than pouring over actuarial tables on how we actually pay for the benefits for the state’s 120,000 or so public employees, but someone’s gotta do it, right? For the few of you out there who don’t find such subjects fascinating, consider this: the State of Hawaii has limited resources, so paying for retired employees means not paying for something else, like infrastructure repairs, school air conditioning, etc. And not paying for employee pensions and benefits just kicks the ball onto the next generation’s field–you can’t do that forever and expect to maintain a solid credit rating. Anyhoo, so there are a few bills still alive (barely) in the state Legislature kinda/sorta dealing with this. Well, dealing with public employee health benefits– House Bills 887 and 888 specifically address the state’s Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund (EUTF), which has a liability of $13.3 billion, according to state Department of Budget and Finance Director Wesley Machida ($11 billion of which is unfunded). HB 887 “establishes the Rate Stabilization Reserve Fund within the Hawaii EmployerUnion Health Benefits Trust Fund to help subsidize the costs of providing health and other benefit plans for active employees and retirees and their beneficiaries,” according to the bill, while HB 888 requires the Legislative Reference Bureau “to study the feasibility of providing health benefits to state and county employees using a self-insured model.” Rep. Romy M. Cachola, D–Pearl Harbor, introduced both bills. “The way to solve the state’s unfunded

liabilities problem is by switching from fully-insured to self-insured to pay for medical insurance for public employees and retirees,” Cachola said in a Mar. 8 news release from the state House of Representatives. “Self-insurance will save millions of dollars and we can use those funds not only to pay down our unfunded liabilities but for much needed programs such as homelessness and housing needs. Many other states successfully self-insure their health care plans and provide the same amount of coverage to their workers. Hawaii can do the same thing without overburdening our taxpayers.” Both bills seemed to moving through the Legislature nicely, though neither has moved since Mar. 9 (on that day both bills passed their first reading and were referred to the Judiciary/Labor and Ways and Means committees). Still, they represent the tiniest of incremental changes to the state’s health benefits liability, which by the way, is getting way worse. To see how, we need only look at Machida’s Feb. 24 testimony before the House Finance Committee. “[T]he total health benefits accrued liability is expected to grow from $13.3 billion in 2017 to $44.5 billion in 30 years,” Machida

said. “The health benefits unfunded liability is also expected to increase by over $6 billion without consideration of any investment returns on stopped contributions.” People are living longer. What’s more, Machida says “more than 12,000” EUTF members could retire today. Paying benefits to them will be expensive, to say the least. Of course, neither of Cachola’s bills does anything about the state’s pensions, the “unfunded actuarial accrued liability” (UAAL), which is $12.4 billion (meaning the state’s total unfunded liabilities amount to more than $23 billion). Two other bills, HB 1061 and SB 927, change the rates for employer contributions to the whole Employee’s Retirement System (ERS), but both appear to be stalled. HB 1061 actually went before a hearing, but has been stalled since Feb. 16. Nothing has happened with SB 927 since it was introduced on Jan. 25. This might actually be a good thing. “Last year, state leaders poured $1.5 billion of taxpayer money toward satisfying the unfunded liabilities for pensions and health benefits for retirees, which is the highest payment the state has ever made, to no avail,” states a Spring 2017 Grassroot Institute report “The Costs of Public Em-

ployment in the Aloha State.” [T]he state debt grew higher than it has ever been.” And if somehow a measure like SB 927 or HB 1061 passes, it “could take money away from local government services like police, fire, schools, and building repair,” states the Grassroot Institute report. “Kauai County would be the most heavily impacted by the new required payments, which would make up 15.5 percent of the entire Kauai County budget.” (Though to be fair, Maui County’s contributions would amount to a far lower 3.2 percent of the budget.) Still, with a funding level of just 54 percent, Hawaii has “one of the lowest funded pensions in the country,” R Street Institute columnist and public employee pension expert Steven Greenhut said during his visit to Maui last month. The likelihood of the state ever paying off the UAAL is also in doubt, according to a report released in January by Gabriel Roeder Smith & Company (GRS), the state’s actuarial consultant. “[T]he period to fund the UAAL is Infinite (i.e. the UAAL is never expected to be paid off) for Police and Fire and 59 years for the All Other Employees group,” states the GRS report. “The aggregate funding period for ERS is 66 years. Since the aggregate funding period based on the contribution rates exceeds 30 years, the rates are not adequate to meet the requirements of Hawaii Revised Statutes §88-122(e)(1).” The idea that the funding period for police and fire pensions in Hawaii is “infinite” is mind-boggling. Put simply, GRS is saying it’s unlikely the State of Hawaii will ever pay them off. And paying off other pensions in 59 years?! That’s three generations from now! As for how you fix all this, you got me. A libertarian organization like Grassroot Institute advocates changing Hawaii’s state government from a “defined benefit” system (public workers get generous benefit packages regardless of what’s been contributed to the benefit fund) to a “defined contribution” system. “Unlike a ‘defined-benefit’ system, the defined-contribution plan promises government workers benefits based on how much money was contributed to the fund, similar to a 401(k),” Grassroot Institute VP Joe Kent wrote in a Mar. 16 blog post for the think tank. “This balances revenues with expenses, so the pension system remains fully funded.” Of course, if the Hawaii state Legislature is letting far less radical unfunded liability measures die, there’s pretty much zero chance of them embracing defined contributions. Which means all this fun will continue into next year. And the next. And the next... ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

MAUI STUDENT RUNNER-UP FOR NAT GEO AWARD Wailuku teen Kaimana Idica, 18, was one of two runners-up for National Geographic’s inaugural Nat Geo Teen Service Award. The award is part of National Geographic’s ongoing effort to recognize extraordinary high school and middle school students who are making a difference through outstanding service work. Idica, who attends Kamehameha School, was honored for his work educating the public about the impact of single-use plastic waste on the environment, both globally and locally, as well as eco-friendly alternatives. Idica has made significant strides to help ban polystyrene take-out containers in Maui County. In 2015, he was a project leader of the #Sporkitup Instagram Challenge, which was designed to encourage young people to use eco-friendly bamboo eating utensils instead of single-use plastic. And in November 2016, he testified in favor of a ban on plastic bags and polystyrene food containers in front of a Maui County Council committee. Idica is also one of the co-creators of “Carbon Funk,” a YouTube music video parody of “Uptown Funk” that focuses on climate change. The National Geographic honor comes with a $500 scholarship towards college savings. National Geographic Student Expeditions, which presented the award, is a program that offers travel and fieldwork opportunities to high school and middle school students. of National Geographic experts, photographers, scientists and journalists on six different continents. “Connecting with and benefiting communities around the world is a key focus of National Geographic Student Expeditions, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize students across the country who are making a difference in their own communities,” said Deb Friedman, Vice President, Independent and Specialty Travel. Nearly 300 students were nominated for the award. Judging was based on the student’s positive impact on the community/planet, commitment to community service initiatives and the strength of his or her nominator’s case for why the nominee deserves the award. “We were blown away by the nominations we received for these Awards,” Friedman said. The grand prize went to Alexa Grabelle, 15, of Voorhees, New Jersey. Grabelle was awarded for her work collecting and distributing books to low-income children through Bags of Books, a nonprofit she founded at age 10. She will receive a community service trip with National Geographic Student Expeditions to Fiji and a $500 scholarship for her college savings. The second runner up award went to Delaney Reynolds, 17, of Miami, Florida. In related news, Idica was one of four high school students to win a full four-year scholarship to Hawaii Pacific University in its #HPU4Hawaii Scholarship Challenge.

News Of The Weird EXPLOITING VILLAINS In February, two teams of South Korean researchers announced cancer-fighting breakthroughs–by taking lessons from how two of medicine’s most vexing, destructive organisms (diarrhea-causing salmonella bacteria and the rabies virus) can access often-unconquerable cancer cells. In journal articles, biologist Jung-joon Min of Chonnam National University described how his team “weaponized” a cancer-fighting invader cell with salmonella to stir up more-robust immune responses, and nanoparticle expert Yu Seok Youn’s Sungkyunkwan University team coated immunizing cells with the rabies protein (since the rabies virus is remarkably successful at invading healthy cells) to reach brain tumors.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Michigan is an “open carry” state, and any adult not otherwise disqualified under state law may “pack heat” in public (except in a few designated zones). In February, an overly earnest Second Amendment fan, James Baker, 24 (accompanied by pal Brandon Vreeland, 40), believed the law was an invitation to walk into the Dearborn police station in full body armor and ski mask, with a semi-automatic pistol and a sawed-off rifle (and have Vreeland photograph officers’ reactions). Both were arrested.

NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE Ex-Colombo family mobster and accused hitman “Tommy Shots” Gioeli, 64, recently filed a federal court lawsuit over a 2013 injury at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City. He fell and broke a kneecap while playing ping-pong (allegedly because of water on the floor), awaiting sentencing for conspiracy to commit murder. The New York Post also noted that the “portly” Gioeli, who was later sentenced to 18 years, was quite a sight at trial, carrying his “man purse” each day.

GREAT ART! French artist Abraham Poincheval told reporters in February that in his upcoming “performance,” he will entomb himself for a week in a limestone boulder at a Paris museum and then, at the conclusion, sit on a dozen bird eggs until they hatch–”an inner journey,” he said, “to find out what the world is.” (He apparently failed to learn that from previous efforts, such as the two weeks he spent inside a stuffed bear or his time on the Rhone River inside a giant corked bottle.) He told reporters the super-snug tomb has been thoroughly accessorized, providing for breathing, eating, heart monitor and emergency phone–except, they noted, nothing on exactly how toileting will be handled.

THE JOB OF THE RESEARCHER A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration “bioacoustic research” team recently reported recording and listening to about two million underwater sounds made over a four-month period by various species of dolphins (“whistles,” echolocation “clicks,” and “burst pulses”) and can, they believe,

8

MARCH 23, 2017

by Chuck Shepard

distinguish the sounds to match them to a particular dolphin species (among the five most prevalent)–with 84 percent accuracy. The team built a computer algorithm to also make estimating dolphin populations much easier.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Oklahoma state Rep. Justin Humphrey, justifying his proposed bill to require a woman seeking an abortion to first identify the father, told a reporter in February that the father’s permission is crucial because, after all, the woman is basically a “host” who “invited that (fetus) in.” And after the North Dakota House of Representatives voted yet again in January to retain the state’s Sundayclosing “blue laws,” Rep. Bernie Satrom explained to a reporter: “Spending time with your wife, your husband, making him breakfast, bringing it to him in bed” is better than going shopping.

SMALL-TOWN GOVERNMENT The ex-wife of Deputy Sheriff Corey King of Washington County, Georgia (largest town: Sandersville, pop. 5,900), filed a federal lawsuit in January against King after he arrested her for the “crime” of making a snarky comment about him on Facebook (about his failure to bring the couple’s children their medicine). King allegedly conspired with a friendly local magistrate on the arrest, and though the prosecutor refused the case, King warned the ex-wife that he would still re-arrest her if she made “the mistake of going to Facebook with your little (excrement)... to fuss about.”

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS In a first-person profile for the Chicago Tribune in February, marketing consultant Peter Bender, 28, recalled how he worked to maximize his knowledge of the products of company client Hanes–and not just the flagship Hanes underwear but its Playtex and Maidenform brands. In an “empathy” exercise, Bender wore bras for three days (a sports bra, an underwire and a lacy one)–fitted at size 34A (or “less than A,” he said). “These things are difficult,” he wrote on a company blog. “The lacy one,” especially, was “itchy.”

THE WEIRDO-AMERICAN COMMUNITY Stephen Reed, the former mayor of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty on the eve of his January trial on corruption counts stemming from the approximately 10,000 items of “Wild West” and “Americana” artifacts worth around $8 million that he had bought with public funds during 28 years in office. For some reason, he had a single-minded obsession with creating a local all-things-cowboy museum, and had purchased such items as a stagecoach, stagecoach harnesses, a “Billy the Kid” wanted poster, a wagon wheel and a totem pole. Somehow, he explained, as he was leaving office after being voted out in 2009, the items he had purchased (theoretically, “on behalf of” of Harrisburg) had migrated into his personal belongings. ■

RACHEL

DEBOER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZEN PANDA BODY ART BY RACHEL DEBOER

10 MARCH 23, 2017

Then, on Nov. 8, 2016, tragedy struck. Donald Trump won the presidency. In the history of my life, I do not think I have ever experienced the combination of sadness, depression and shock that I felt on the days that followed. Though I know that more than half of America felt the same way, it wasn’t until I reached out to Deboer via Facebook Messenger that I began to heal my feelings of political hopelessness and presidential PTSD. We began a series of messages regarding ideas for what type of body painting I’d like

arly this fall, I binge watched all the Skin Wars seasons on Hulu. Though I had never met Rachel Deboer in person, I definitely knew who she was and have some Maui friends in common with her. So, being a fan of her body painting art, I was stoked when I saw her ripping up the dance floor in early November at a DJ Mark Farina show at Lulu’s. That night, I didn’t have the guts to walk up to her and fangirl on her, but I did when I came across her face painting table at Maui Comic Con the following day at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Deboer is an internationally recognized and award-winning body painting artist. She won 3rd Place in the Semi-Pro Professional category at the World Body Painting Festival in Austria in 2008. She also won 5th Place in UV Body Painting in 2012 and made the Top 30 In The World list for the Professional Brush & Sponge category at the concurrent festivals in Austria in 2016. She’s renowned for her work with blacklight body paint, as well as for the mystical characters she creates. Deboer also has a degree in Theater Performance from the University of South Florida. “Body painting is an art form unlike any other,” DeBoer says. “It’s been around since humans have been here. Body painting political and social justice issues on women’s bodies seems to me like one of the most revolutionary act we can do.” At Maui Comic Con, though weaning a small kine headache from the previous night, I found the strength to say hello to her. It was awesome, and she was very cool. We discussed bodypainting, I asked her how a person becomes body-painted and we exchanged information.

to do. At first, I just wanted her to paint something that would be a good addition to her professional portfolio. But once we discovered that we were both irate about the new President-Elect, we had decided to do a political body art piece. We met in person, discussed a plan, set up meeting times and it was on. Many women and men feel insecure about their bodies and being naked in public, and I was no different. Okay, I’ll admit that I was actually a little bit mortified. I kept asking myself questions like, Is my body okay for this? Are my boobs too

small to be body painted? Even more negative and weird nervous brain chatter fled through my mind in the days leading up to my first body painting session. To put it mildly, I was scared. Back in 2015, we published a feature article about Deboer’s experience on Game Show Network’s Skin Wars (“Is She Maui’s Next Reality TV Star?,” June 4, 2015). She was a cast member on the second season, vying for a $100,000 prize amongst a group of her peers–world renowned body painting artists. Since her experience on Skin Wars, Miss Rachel Deboer has been consistently painting human canvases in many different mediums and forms; full body painting, face painting, pregnant belly painting and live human art installations. In the most recent months (since Trump’s election, in fact), Rachel’s art has begun to take a new direction which she calls “Political Body Art” and “Body Art Activism.” The main issues that DeBoer focuses on are discrimination against women, discrimination against immigrants, LGBTQ marriage equality rights, pro-choice for women and even the abolition of the electoral college. “I’ve noticed that there is a lot of control and suppression around the human body, especially around women’s bodies,” Deboer says. “With the extremely nasty, cruel and shocking disregard for women in this election, and normalization of the president’s derogatory comments about women, I felt kicked in the gut by our country. The current government aims to control people–control our behavior, who we marry, where we work, what we buy, our healthcare, our education, etc. Literally drawing the issues concerning our

country and our globe on women’s bodies was the only obvious antidote for this oppression.” Deboer strongly believes we need to get back to a “whole-istic” view of our place here on this earth. “Instead of raping and consuming the earth for its resources with a greedy acquistion of things, be a steward of the earth and champions of each other’s rights,” she says. If she can encourage people to have more compassion and tolerance towards all, then Deboer believes that her job as an artist is done. For our first body painting project, I went to her home in Kula. I was nervous, but to my surprise getting body painted wasn’t scary at all. After spending a few hours topless while she painted my chest, I discovered that she wasn’t just an intensely passionate artist and woman, but also very comfortable to be around. Her humor and intelligence are engaging, and throughout our discussions I realized that Deboer is more than just an artist; she’s an “art-activist.” “Art is visceral,” she says. “You feel it in your body. Artists have a responsibility to influence, educate and expand human consciousness.” For Deboer, the purpose of art is to remind people of the heart in the decision making process, not just the head or the ego. The first body painting piece that I did with her was called “You Cannot Censor the Heart.” It was a tribute to efforts against not only art

censorship, but the ways that a political climate can run counter to public opinion. With a censorship bar painted across my mouth, a realistic heart painted on my chest, and me appearing to rip my chest open with a deer-in-headlight expression in my eyes, the piece was incredibly powerful. Maui photographer Zen Panda arrived to take photographs, and within a few days the images hit social media like a ton of bricks. A few weeks later, “You Cannot Censor the Heart” images flooded Instagram and Facebook feeds, even being re-posted by internationally acclaimed body painters, art groups and Standing Rock No DAPL communities. It was incredible. With this kind of social media popularity and the confirmation about how Deboer’s art is helping people throughout the world, the fire within me grew. Deboer, Zen Panda and I were all pumped to produce more such art. “Political body painting became my focus immediately after the election,” Deboer says. “I was horrified with the whole process and wanted to bury my head in the sand. I admit I was complacent for a long time in politics, taking our hard won social freedoms such as LGBTQ gains for granted. As soon as our now president was elected, I knew I needed to express what was in my heart and that’s when ‘You Cannot Censor the Heart’ came out.”

A few weeks later, DeBoer and I returned to Zen Panda’s photography studio in Kahului. There was a new political body art piece idea, but this one was going to be insane. Although we weren’t exactly sure how it would turn out, it ended up being very powerful. Deboer painted my body as an American flag using black-light body paint. I was tied up in Shibari ropes, a form of Japanese bondage. I was also wearing a “V for Vendetta” mask, a sort of homage to the international network of political activists and hackers called “Anonymous.” DeBoer named the piece “America Held Hostage.” I see it as a direct artistic reflection of how many Americans felt and still feel since Trump took over the Oval Office. Given the social media success of “You Cannot Censor the Heart,” “America Held Hostage” was the perfect follow-up. Like a laser focused on justice, Deboer newest piece burned into the darkest alleys of America’s soul. Then in early January, Deboer went to Los Angeles, where she attended the anti-Trump march and the 750,000-strong Women’s March, also in LA. At the anti-Trump march, she painted half of her face with hearts and flowers and the other half as Trump. She marched with her fellow activists holding a sign that said, “Which Face of America are You?” She told me that she’ll attend as many marches and demonstrations as she can in the next four years. “Attending these marches have helped me to silence the voices of doubt and insecurity that no one would care about what I cared about,”

she says. “When things this important such as our lives are on the line, artistic expression and public gatherings of like-minded people can boost the soul and heart morale of the nation.” A few weeks ago, Deboer painted me again. The newest of her body art activism collection is a dedication to women’s rights and gender equality. Titled “Rosie the Resister,” she painted me in an illustration-style as “Rosie the Riveter,” the iconic image of the female defense plant worker created by J.Howard Miller in 1943 for the U.S government. My overall experience of meeting, getting to know and creating a sisterhood with Deboer has been incredible. I’m sure that we’ll be creating more art pieces together, but I’m most excited to see where Rachel’s political art and efforts as a political activist will take her. Given the words and actions of President Trump, she will have a lot of work ahead of her. “Art lovers can support political body art by beginning to paint on themselves,” Deboer says. “Even face painting words on the body is very powerful. The act of putting color and shape to mental constructs on the human canvas is transformative and forever creatively fulfilling.”

that just took off. We didn’t expect it to be as popular as it is. Same thing with the Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts are flash fried a little bit crispy. They have a konbu seaweed aioli. Then it’s got the green apples, pickled jalapeños and Parmesan cheese. You toss that all up in the aioli and it’s just amazing.” The large plates include a giant turkey leg dish inspired by one of America’s beloved amusement parks. The pastas are outstanding, their truffled mac and cheese and jumbo pesto prawns were winners. One evening at the bar, bartender Damion Emeson directed me to the filet and gnocci special. After my plate came out, my neighbor had to order one. Then it went the other way, with my neighbor ordering a lobster roll and I had to have one. The kale salad is also bomb, as were the wings. For dessert, the warm apple strudel was incredible, and they had a panna cotta dessert special with Irish cream. “These chicken wings have a really, really nice herb breading, says Robertson. “It doesn’t even need sauce, it’s just so good by itself. hearwater Tavern opened about three months ago, but it’s already won over a following with local residents. Tucked into the most mauka corner of Azeka Mauka, this casual comfort food restaurant has indoor climate controlled seating, an outdoor lanai, nightly entertainment and happy hour. It’s the first gastropub concept that chef/restaurateur D.K. Kodama has created and it’s the eighth restaurant in his D.K. Restaurant group. “I’ve visited a lot of gastropubs all over the country,” says D.K. “When the location became available (locals will remember it as the old A Pacific Café, then Stella Blues location in Azeka Mauka), I thought a gastropub would be a perfect fit. The menu is a collaboration of ideas from many folks in our company.” General manager Reed Robertson says they worked out the menu details with tireless tastings with D.K. “The amount of work that D.K. has done, tweaking little elements of this menu from the actual size of the hamburger buns to the amount of ounces in it, has been incredible,”

says Robertson. “D.K. has done an amazing amount of tinkering, making everything just right. His passion for the quality of everything that comes out of our kitchen is incomparable. Consistency is very, very high. We tasted this burger probably 20 times with slight modifications. We tried with pancetta instead of bacon. It was fun and very filling. Some days we were tasting the burger five times. The bun was a big thing: we tried probably 10 different buns. These buns are from Homemaid Bakery, same thing with our lobster roll. We have a Hawaiian sweet bread roll coming from Homemaid bakery.” Some items were borrowed from Vino. “There’s a good part of our menu that’s from our sister restaurant Vino,” says Robertson. “Our fresh made pastas, a lot of the veggies and salads. Chef Keith Endo does amazing work over there and he’s helped us create a lot of this menu. The other thing is there were just gastropub items that we thought should be on our menu. Things like nachos, wings and burgers. Obviously with the fried egg on top, nothing screams gastropub more than that.” Shearwater Tavern is done in dark wood tones and cast iron details. It’s a completely new build-out. Trendy chalk board menus on

the wall call out their current craft brews. There are high tops and communal tables near the bar and a more intimate dining area with four tops. Dimmed lighting and some flat screen TVs round out the pleasant man-cave vibe. “We are very, very focused on craft beers, obviously,” says Robertson. “We have 15 taps constantly rotating and I believe we have 32 bottles and cans right now and those are in rotation as well. For our specialty cocktails, the master mixologist from Southern helped us design our menu. Lanui Villalon and I tweaked it to make it our own. We have added a few cocktails that have been really great sellers. We created the Tai Me Down, that’s all Lanui. And the Moscow Mule uses my own personal ginger beer recipe. Those are our two top sellers and we are very proud.” Shearwater packs a lot of items into their dinner service, from burgers and sandwiches to house-made pasta to a category they call “Large Plates.” Appetizers, salads and side dishes start it all off, but in ad-

Shearwater burger

dition to the regular menu there is a clipboard of specials courtesy of Chef Carl Yeh. “On the burger we have a cave-aged sharp cheddar sauce,” says Robertson. “There is also Maui onion jam, bacon and a fried egg. There’s a Hawaii rancher’s burger patty, with no hormones–just good stuff in it. Hawaii Ranch has been very consistent with their products and that’s why we use their beef. Chef Carl makes all the pickles here in house, I urge you to taste them. It has that little something extra. We are the best value around. That burger is 11 bucks, you can’t get that anywhere else. I eat it at least a couple times a week.” Another dish that has taken off is the bao. “The pork belly bun is super simple,” says Robertson. “It has two nice thick slices of pork belly with kimchi, cucumbers, pickled jalapeños, cilantro and hoisin barbecue sauce on a deep-fried bao bun. Just simple elevated comfort food. It’s on our happy hour for $2 a piece. People are going nuts and ordering like 20 of them. It’s one of those things

tossed in the herb gremolata. It has a Sriracha kochujang sauce–that’s a Korean spicy chili sauce. That sauce is good on just about everything. The wings don’t need it but it’s good. I actually put that sauce on my burger.” Shearwater Tavern has a great line-up of local musicians that starts at 5pm every day. On Friday and Saturday they even have a late night set from 10pm to midnight. They also have happy hour from 5 to 6pm everyday and a late night happy hour from 10 to 12pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Happy hour specials are half off veggies and appetizers and $2 off signature craft cocktails and draft beers. “We like to call this place a gathering place,” says Robertson. “Groups will come and hang out and spend a lot of time here. They don’t just eat and go–they will sit around and talk and have fun for hours at a time.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Hot Tea THE HOLISTIC WONDERS OF HOBBS TEA

Then she processes them on Oahu. “Each tea is brought to Oahu where we hand-fill each whole leaf tea into 100 percent plant-based bags,” says Chambers. “Each tea bag is made from plant fiber only–no bleach, nylon, plastic, glue, metal ever. We use no machines, only tea-loving hands to ensure the optimal freshness and quality of each tea leaf. Each tea bag is hand-tied and hand-sealed into certified biodegradable and compostable nontoxic water based ink bags. The result is the world’s most luxurious tea made easy to brew on the go anywhere, anytime, with no chemicals at all and also good for our planet.” Teas have unique vitamins and minerals. Hobbs makes a Sencha Green to uplift with

Rainforest of North Fujian, China. Rooibos comes from 17th century Cederburg Mountains in South Africa while the Yerba Mate is rainforest grown from Mata Atlantica, South Brazil. “I tasted hundreds of teas from around the world, researched health benefits and caffeine levels with different combinations, confirmed organic, fair trade, sustainable certifications of each garden,” says Chambers. “This process took about three years.” What’s more, tea takes a while before it can be harvested. “It takes years, at least five, to get a solid harvest,” says Chambers. “Then you have to craft them which take a ton of experience and knowledge. Our Hawaii-grown Oolong is

some organic, some corporate, but nearly all teas I get come in a bleached bag of some sort. Chambers’ Hobbs Tea is crafting a more holistic tea experience with local tea farms and hand-bagged tea using plant-based materials. It starts with the tea leaves that Chambers has carefully selected. “Each tea is single garden estate grown,” says Chambers. “The Artisan Collection is from certified organic artisan gardens around the world. They use fair trade, sustainable, organic artisan practices. Some gardens are over 800 years old, with ‘deep root’ tea trees that pull minerals from the earth, resulting in a deep rich brew–similar to ‘deep vine’ wine. We also have four teas that are 100 percent Hawaii grown. Single garden grown on Kilauea Volcano, Big Island Hawaii. Each tea leaf is handpicked, indoor shade-dried.”

here’s more than meets the eye when it comes to a cup of tea. Have you ever stopped to think what went into that tea bag before you dunked it into some hot water in your mug? Jamie Chambers, creator behind the local brand Hobbs Tea, certainly has. “Tea is one of the only agricultural products that is not washed before it reaches you,” says Chambers. “Any pesticides or chemicals used during growing and crafting goes right into your cup. This is why we only use organic sustainably grown teas from single gardens. Tea bags today are made from bleached paper or nylon. The nylon contains forms of plastic that when brewed leach into your water and tea. Same with the bleach, glue and chlorine that is used in traditional tea bags.” That was sobering information for me, a daily tea consumer. I drink all kinds of tea,

Each bag is hand created

Theanine and vitamins C, E, and K; Rooibos, to clarify with vitamin C, zinc, Iron and calcium (it helps to balance women’s hormones); Silver Tip White Tea to rejuvenate with antioxidants and phytonutrients;Yerba Mate has as much caffeine as coffee plus selenium, chlorophyll and 28 different amino acids; and Mint Oolong to cleanse with vitamin E, folic acid and Thiamine. The Mint Oolong combination helps to flush fatty carbs from your system, serving as a great detox tea according to Chambers. Her teas come from Hawaii and around the world. A process that took years. The Sencha Green is a 13th century heirloom tea garden from Kagoshima, Kyushu Island, Japan. The Silver Tip White is hand-picked baby tea buds from Fujian Province, China. The mint is grown in the Cascade Mountain valleys in Washington. Oolong is harvested in the Wuyi Mountain

hand-massaged for hours to bring the lovely oils to the top of each leaf resulting in a citrus honey and touch of spice taste. Hawaiian volcano soil adds a natural sweetness to each tea. Volcanic soil is extremely acidic, so the tea plants grow very well. Most places in the world do not benefit from this luxury. Hobbs Hawaii Grown tea is grown in between two active lava tubes, which results in a lovely and extremely unique and rare brew.” Because Hobbs tea is hand-crafted and fresh, each bag will brew many cups. 'Beauty And The Beast' It’s best to skip the new version and just watch the 1991 cartoon again ★★★★★ Rated PG / 129 Min.

I

n Bill Condon’s live-action remake of the 1991 Disney animated musical Beauty and the Beast, the story is mostly the same and all the expected ingredients are in place.Yet, everyone seems to be trying too hard to make up for the big gap at the film’s center. This may be the first version of this story I’ve ever seen where I didn’t care about either Beauty or the Beast. Harry Potter star Emma Watson plays Belle, the town bookworm whose independence makes her stand out. Gaston (played by Luke Evans), an unapologetic narcissist, works overtime to become Belle’s suitor but can’t win her heart. When Belle’s father (Kevin Kline) is imprisoned in a magical castle by a rage-filled Beast (played by Dan Stevens), Belle offers herself to be a captive in her father’s place. Belle and the Beast are “barely even friends, then somebody bends, unexpectedly...” Things begin badly, with an unnecessary, awkward flashback to the Beast’s origins. Then, the singing starts and I worried that

the whole thing would collapse. Watson’s introductory moments are cringe-worthy, as her heavily autotuned singing made me long for the just-okay vocals of Emma Stone. Watson’s performance is at medium-speed for the whole movie, as she rarely does more than give her standard half-smirk through most scenes. Watson can be quite good and is positively bewitching in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. As Belle, she’s poorly miscast. Watson has no chemistry with Stevens’ Beast, as the two barely match the heat of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. Stevens’ face is covered with a CGI rendering of a hairy monster but it makes him look like talking tree bark. An actor covered in make-up would have been preferable, as the best thing about Stevens’ motioncaptured performance is that it sometimes recalls the animation of the 1991 film. Much of this movie has that problem, as the 2017 Beauty and the Beast in no way matches or surpasses the 1991 animated version. Condon stages some robust musical numbers and the sets and costumes are lovely but watching this just made me want to go home and revisit the earlier adaptation, which did everything right.

As you might expect, Tinder has been a disaster for me

Kids who didn’t grow up with the animated version should find this entertaining enough. The “Be Our Guest” number is dazzling, as is the new “Evermore” and the title song is, wisely, as quiet a sequence as it was the first time. Evans makes a better than passable Gaston, though his performance is mostly a careful mimicry of the animated version and not a fresh interpretation. As Gaston’s lunk-headed sidekick, LeFou, Josh Gad conveys what a creep the character is but isn’t as funny as you’d hope. This is a far cry from Gad’s brilliantly funny work in Frozen or The Book of Mormon. The outcry around Gad’s character, that he provides the first genuinely “gay moment” in a Disney film, is perhaps the dumbest movie controversy ever. Like

Sulu’s much-touted and uneventful “coming out” in the recent Star Trek Beyond, LeFou’s big moment is a quick, who-cares reveal that you’ll miss if you blink. A note to the Disney Company: if you’re going to unveil your first openly gay character in a motion picture, why not make it someone who is well-rounded, likable and integral to the plot? Instead, they wait until the end of the very last scene to show us that Gaston’s jackass sidekick is dancing with a man. Deeming Le Fou, a loathsome toad, as the first homosexual in a Disney movie is not progress or at all flattering. Condon has made a sparkling musical with fine moments but Watson’s ordinary performance, the feeling of déjà vu and some newly added missteps keep this from soaring. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You’re good at lots of things, but gardening’s generally a no-no. Most Rams simply don’t have green thumbs. It’s not that you don’t like taking care of others; it’s just that it works best if they actively remind you when they need some of your TLC. Plants are quite simply not loud enough. Nor, probably, is the newest candidate applying for a lion’s share of your attention and affection. Keep that in mind before you promise it to them. Will you really be able to keep this one thriving without the kind of cues you’re used to? If you’re not sure, please consider which is kinder: giving them a taste, then letting them slowly starve, or simply depriving them altogether and walking away? TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Read between the lines. There are holes there, chinks in the armor of those who oppose you. Perhaps their secret inclinations are more in line with yours, or they have qualms about the methods being used to forward their agendas. In any case, there’s something there you can use to get what you want; it’s just a matter of being clever and observant and patient while you figure out what it is. Bide your time, Taurus. What looks like an impossibly impenetrable impediment is actually quite vulnerable–wait for your opening to present itself. Then don’t hesitate. Just dive through.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Some guys have wanted into their crappy-ass college fraternity so bad that they’ve died trying. Naturally, these were accidents, but if the hazing rituals they had to endure weren’t so extremely harrowing, they’d never have been at risk in the first place. Where will your desire lead you, and is it proportionate to the danger or hardship you’ll face in its pursuit? Or is the end result as lame as getting to wear some Greek letters? This week, make sure your goals are worthy of you, and not out of proportion to the misery and risk you’ll have to endure to achieve them.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

The problem with being so passionate is that you can get carried away. “But isn’t that the whole point?” you ask. Well, yes and no. Sometimes it’s good to let your feelings go over the top, but at other times–like right now–that’d actually keeping you from having the best experience you could. Don’t let this week’s little frustrations make you all inflamed and ridiculous, because when viewed with the least bit of perspective they’ll look incredibly tiny and petty and you’ll look like the biggest drama queen around. Keep your passions in check. When it’s appropriate to let them loose and burn the city down, you’ll know, without a shadow of a doubt. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

The first time I met one of my best friends in high school, he was wearing a giant strawberry costume, with more glee than self-consciousness. It was, honestly, ridiculous as well as incredibly crush-inducing, the way he bounced around in green tights grinning ear-to-ear. I’m quite sure he volunteered for this potentially embarrassing scenario, while you weren’t exactly clamoring to take part in the one you face this week. But you could try the same tact he employed: having as much fun with it as possible. You may find, if you enjoy yourself enough, that you’re much more likely to attract admiration than scorn. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Go ahead. Devour great slabs of chocolate cake for breakfast this week. Pause the hunt for that great deep love and just have dirty hot sex. Indulge your most extreme desires, as this week’s astrological influences are goading you to do anyway, because resisting them is virtually pointless; it certainly won’t get you what you want, in the short- or long-term. Sometimes you just have to let yourself go there and explore those hedonistic extremes, even if they don’t seem to fit in with your ultimate master plan. Don’t dig in your heels, Cancer. What’s the big deal, anyway? Indulging your most carnal and riotous desires isn’t torture. It’s fun. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Watch out for those strawberry daiquiris. Margarita? Say no thanks. Stay away from the stuff you can drink without exactly cringing, because if it’s too easy to get shit-faced this week, you’ll simply be drunk a bit too often. You’ll end up saying and doing things you’ll regret, and while that’s not exactly the end of the world, it certainly doesn’t set you up all that well for the kind of productive period you’ve been hoping to have the next few months. Stick to something else that tastes horrible when getting your drink on at the moment. You’ll have slightly less fun, but a million fewer regrets. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

You can’t avoid your own life forever, no matter how busy you make yourself. Eventually you’ll have to face the problems or people you don’t have answers for. The excuse, “I’ve been too busy to even think about it,” while honest, won’t cut it for long. I don’t like to see you driven to these extremes by avoidance. Instead let lust, ambition, purpose, and zeal drive you; that means shaking this particular unresolved monkey off your back. I want you to stop and have a think and figure out an answer–any answer–so you can quit running from your quandary and get back to your inhuman schedule because you love it, not because you have “no choice.”

If you accidentally show up for a costume party a day early, don’t wither away in embarrassment. Own it. Make it a happy accident. Find somewhere else to wear your costume to, and use the experience as a dress rehearsal for when the real thing comes around. Naturally, I’m not really talking about anything as prosaic as an actual costume party; adapt the idea to something really happening in your life. Make the accidental trial run more fun than the actual event would have been, then make the real thing even better.

VOTED BEST

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

If I could write your horoscope in white ink, I’d consider it this week, since it would reflect exactly how invisible you’re feeling at the moment. It’s hard not to feel overlooked when your friends go out together without you, or your coworkers get recognition you deserve, or cute strangers blank you instead of flirting with you. What are you doing wrong? Nothing, really–mostly this is the universe’s way of asking you to step up your game. What’s that mean, exactly? Be more proactive. Make yourself unignorable. Don’t have the cojones? Fine, fade into the wallpaper. We’ll see you when we see you, then.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Aquarians have powerful and useful imaginations, but they rarely get out of control. Some of us spend our childhoods fleeing from monsters under the bed, and live our adult lives in the shadow of creatures just as illusory. But these are things you’ve rarely, if ever, done. You can let your imagination vault tremendous distances, but only with your rational intellect holding the reins. What would you say, though, if I told you that a vast territory of possibility lies outside of what you’ve so far seen? Terrors lurk there-but so do wonders. You’ll only get there if you let your imagination run wild and out of control. Curiosity piqued? Good.

CLASSIC ROCK

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Sometimes your passion doesn’t show. I think this is because of your general tendency to see both sides of every situation; what’s actually open-minded (and intense) curiosity can come off as total apathy. It’s not that you can’t muster an opinion; it’s that you have too many, and they’re not necessarily all in synch with each other. Over the years, you’ve learned to keep these contradictions to yourself, since they tend to freak many people out. This week, however, I say let them spill. They may confuse or confound a few, but they’ll let the important ones know that you’re not without care-you’re actually more involved than they could ever imagine. They may not fully grasp the distinction, but it’ll make a difference to them, nonetheless. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
