Not quite ready to panic

NORTH KOREA NUCLEAR ‘THREAT’? GET A GRIP A friend of mine is traveling through Europe right now. She recently posted on Facebook that she checks the site every day to make sure Hawaii hasn’t been destroyed in a nuclear attack. Another friend, referencing a recent news article, said it’s time to upgrade our state’s bomb shelters. I can’t look at social media these days without seeing some scary post about the “threat” of nuclear war with North Korea. And there are journalistic accounts too–from reputable news organizations– that seem every bit as frightening. “Specialists think North Korea poses nuclear threat to Hawaii,” screamed a terrifying April 10, 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser story. Four days later, Hawaii News Now followed up with a story headlined “Hawaii panel asks state to prepare for North Korea attack.” None of this is new (in fact, I can recall that back in 2009 resort officials on Lanai ordered tourists off the beach because they feared a North Korean missile would hit there). More than ever, everyone in Hawaii needs to get a grip. News organizations especially need to stop looking on North Korea terror stories as click-bait and start making sure their headlines are as rational as the reporting in their stories. North Korea is not going to lob nuclear missiles at Hawaii–at least, not anytime soon. Of that, military analysts agree. The North Korean government simply doesn’t have any missiles capable of hitting us. “North Korea is still a few years away from being able to target U.S. territory,” wrote Sharon Squassoni, director of the Proliferation Prevention Program at the Center for Strategic and Inter-

national Studies and member of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board in an April 14, 2017 op-ed for Teen Vogue (don’t laugh–they’re posting some of the best political writing out there right now). “It has been testing an intermediate-range missile, the Musudan, which could possibly reach Guam if the most optimistic estimates are right, but reaching Hawaii would require a missile to fly well over 4,000 miles. North Korea’s only missile with a triedand-true, demonstrated range flies only 1,000 km (about 620 miles).” Right now, nuclear war with North Korea threatens South Korea and Japan, but not Hawaii. Sure, this might change in a few years, but right now, it does not include Hawaii. Once you read past the white knuckle headlines of local stories, it’s clear the “threat” from North Korea is being overblown. Pretty deep into that Star-Advertiser story mentioned above is the following quote from Hawaii Emergency Management Administrator Vern Miyagi: “If you were to ask me what is the status of North Korea, and is (a missile attack) a high probability, no, it’s a low probability.” As the article explains, Miyagi is a “retired Army two-star general who served at the Pacific Command as senior adviser for military support to civil authorities operations and Reserve and National Guard affairs,” so his credentials are pretty solid. It helps to understand why North Korea, one of the most reclusive nations on earth, has been seeking nuclear weapons for the last few decades. The reason is actually pretty simple. “Above all else, North Korea’s nuclear programme is about security–it is, by their estimation, the only reliable guarantee of the country’s basic sovereignty, of the Commu-

nist regime’s control, and of the rule of Kim Jong-un,” said Professor John Delury, of the Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies, in a Sept. 9, 2016 BBC article. “North Korea learned from Iraq that Saddam Hussein’s mistake was he did not possess the weapons of mass destruction he was falsely accused of having. Libya taught a similar lesson. So, until we can help Pyongyang find a credible substitute to guarantee its security, and give Kim Jong-un the kind of prestige that comes with being a member of the nuclear club, then we can expect more tests, more progress and more ‘provocations’.” Above all else, North Korea wants nuclear weapons to deter an American attack and invasion. Given our history of routinely bombing, invading and occupying poor nations–to say nothing of the bombastic blather of President Donald Trump–I’d say North Korea has a great deal more to fear from us than we have from them. This is something every American, in or out of Hawaii, needs to understand: where North Korea is concerned, the United States is the biggest threat in the world. This predates the loon Trump by many decades, and will likely continue long after he’s finally out of power (assuming he doesn’t provoke China or even Russia into nuking us).

MIKE VICTORINO IN BAD AUTO COLLISION So after a weekend of speculating about the veracity of a story that former Maui County Councilmember/future Maui Mayor candidate Mike Victorino had been in an auto collision that involved him hitting two kids–a story apparently first reported by Hawaii News Now, though there is no trace of such a story on their website–The Maui News finally reported on Monday, April 17 that the incident did indeed occur. But don’t worry, the paper’s story took

Overheard “If I’m high on Molly when the bomb drops, I’m fine with that.”

pains to make clear: everyone is doing fine. “Joycelyn Victorino confirmed Sunday that her husband, Mike Victorino, who previously held the council’s Wailuku-WaiheeWaikapu residency seat and has announced plans to run for Maui County mayor in 2018, was the driver in the collision, but said that he was not under the influence of alcohol and was not speeding, which matched a statement from police,” the News reported. The paper then quoted Mike Victorino as saying, “I am devastated by this.

I hurt for them. And I want them to get a speedy and total recovery. That’s my prayer for the two of them and their families.” According to the story, Victorino and his wife were driving on West Papa Avenue at 9:30pm on the night of April 13 when “an 18-year-old male and a 15-year-old male stepped into the roadway and attempted to cross toward Luana Gardens, police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto said.” Jocelyn Victorino said the car was going no faster than 25 miles per hour (police added that they did not believe speed or alcohol was a factor in the collision). After hitting the young men, Victorino reportedly stopped and waited for police and emergency personnel to arrive. Both young men sustained “nonlife-threatening injuries,” The Maui News reported. And that would seem to be that, except for one curious detail. According to the story, the “Initial investigation revealed that the pedestrians were not in a crosswalk at the time of the collision, Okamoto said,” but according to the mother of the older male that was hit, “Her son told her that the teens had been in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.” Very curious indeed. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

News Of The Weird WORLD’S COOLEST CITY

GO GREEN Call the Fast & Friendly Professionals at Wikiwiki. Specializing in Solar PV Solar Water PV Air Conditioning www.wikiwikielectric.com • 808 244-WIKI (9454)

Recently, in Dubai (the largest city in the United Arab Emirates), Dubai Civil Defense started using water jetpacks that lift firefighters off the ground to hover in advantageous positions as they work the hoses. Also, using jet skis, rescuers can avoid traffic altogether by using the city’s rivers to arrive at fires (and, if close enough to a waterway, can pump water without hydrants). Even more spectacularly, as early as this summer, Dubai will authorize already tested one-person, “Jetsons”-type drones for ordinary travel in the city. The Ehang 184 model flies about 30 minutes on an electrical charge, carrying up to 220 pounds at about 60 mph.

LATEST HUMAN RIGHTS Convicted murderer Philip Smith (a veteran criminal serving life for killing the father of a boy Smith had been sexually abusing) escaped from prison in New Zealand with the help of a disguise that included a toupee for his bald head–before being caught. Prison officials confiscated the toupee, but Smith said a shiny head behind bars made him feel “belittled, degraded and humiliated” and sued for the right to keep the toupee. (In March, in a rare case in which a litigant succeeds as his own lawyer, Smith prevailed in Auckland’s High Court.)

AWESOME! The Cleveland (Ohio) Street Department still had not (at press time) identified the man, but somehow he, dressed as a road worker, had wandered stealthily along Franklin Boulevard during March and removed more than 20 standard “35 mph” speed limit signs–replacing all with official-looking “25 mph” signs that he presumably financed himself. Residents along those two miles of Franklin have long complained, but the city kept rejecting pleas for a lowered limit.

MATING STRATEGIES The Apenheul primate park in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, is engaged in a four-year experiment, offering female orangutans an iPad loaded with photos of male orangutans now housed at zoos around the world, with the females able to express interest or disinterest (similar to swiping right or left on the human dating app Tinder). Researchers admit results have been mixed, that some males have to be returned home, and once, a female handed the iPad with a potential suitor showing, merely crushed the tablet. (Apps are not quite to the point of offering animals the ability to digitally smell each other.)

THE PEAHEN GAZE Peacocks are “well known” (so they say) to flash their erect, sometimes-six-foot-high rack of colorful tail feathers to attract mating opportunities. However, as researchers in Texas recently found, the display might not be important. Body cameras placed on peahens at eye level (to learn how they check out strutting males) revealed that the females gazed

6

mostly at the lowest level of feathers (as if attracted only to certain colors rather than the awesomeness of the towering flourish).

SPECTACULAR ERRORS! In March, jurors in Norfolk, Virginia, found Allen Cochran, 49, not guilty of attempted shoplifting, but he was nowhere to be seen when the verdict was announced. Apparently predicting doom (since he had also been charged with fleeing court during a previous case), he once again skipped out. The jury then re-retired to the jury room, found him guilty on the earlier count and sentenced him to the fiveyear maximum. (Because of time already served, he could have walked away legally if he hadn’t walked away illegally.) And in March, Ghanian soccer player Mohammed Anas earned a “man of the match” award (after his two goals led the Free State Stars to a 2-2 draw), but botched the acceptance speech by thanking both his wife and his girlfriend. Reportedly, Anas “stumbled for a second” until he could correct himself. “I’m so sorry,” he attempted to clarify. “My wife! I love you so much from my heart.”

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS It turns out that Layne Hardin’s sperm is worth only $1,900–and not the $870,000 a jury had awarded him after finding that former girlfriend Tobie Devall had, without Hardin’s permission, obtained a vial of it without authorization and inseminated herself to produce her son, now age six. Initially Hardin tried to gain partial custody of the boy, but Devall continually rebuffed him, provoking the lawsuit (which also named the sperm bank Texas Andrology a defendant) and the challenge in Houston’s First Court of Appeal.

MOST COMPETENT CRIMINAL An astonished woman unnamed in news reports called police in Coleshill, England, in February to report that a car exactly like her silver Ford Kuga was parked at Melbicks garden center–with the very same license plate as hers. Police figured out that a silver Ford Kuga had been stolen nearby in 2016, and to disguise that it was stolen, the thief had looked for an identical, not-stolen Ford Kuga and then replicated its license plate, allowing the thief to drive the stolen car without suspicion.

GREAT ART! At what was billed as part of a cancer fundraising event at the AvantGarden in Houston in February, performance artist Michael Clemmons and a partner, working as the act Sonic Rabbit Hole, had the elegant idea that one give the other an enema on stage, but there was a “spraying” accident. Viewers were led to believe the procedure was authentic, but the artists swore later that the sprayed contents were just a protein shake. “What I did is not all that [extreme],” protested Clemmons. “I don’t understand why I’m getting the attention for this.” ■

Get Involved! A brief guide to Maui's community environmental stewards By Anthony Pignataro

One of the (many) advantages to living in Maui County is that virtually everyone agrees as to the importance of environmental issues. There are plenty of federal and state agencies dedicated to making sure succeeding generations will still enjoy the land, water and air we have now, and Maui County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons has spent years making sure all our local issues receive the proper attention at the county level. But much of the real conservation and preservation work going on is being done by community organizations. Here’s a brief guide to 20 groups out there doing wonderful work for the betterment of Maui. Though they all deal with different issues, they all share something critical: they require your donations and volunteer time to work. So rather than just sign some Facebook petition to save the earth, why not help out a group that’s out there doing it?

ALOHA RECYCLING Aloha Recycling is a Certified Redemption Center for your HI5 beverage containers. But they’ll also take all your aluminum cans, glass bottles, a variety of paper types and cardboard. They operate five locations across the island in Kihei, Makawao, Haiku and Kahului. 75 Amala Pl., Kahului; 808-871-8544; Aloha-recycling.com ‘AO‘AO O NA LOKO I‘A O MAUI South Maui residents, alarmed at the deterioration of the big Ko‘ie‘ie Loko I‘a fishpond in Kihei, formed this nonprofit in 1998. There, many centuries ago, “Choice ‘anae (mullet) and ‘awa (milkfish) flourished and grew over three feet long!” according to the organization’s website. Today it’s one of the most accessible fishponds in Maui County, but it still needs a lot of work. In fact, the nonprofit holds regular community work days to continue restoration efforts. PO Box 1371; Kihei; 808-359-1172; Mauifishpond.com EAST MAUI WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP Encompassing about 100,000 acres, the East Maui Watershed produces something like 60 billion gallons of water every year for the island (which is roughly enough water to satisfy nearly 550,000 households for a year). In fact, the Partnership–a group effort of land and habitat preservation between federal, state and

8

APRIL 20, 2017

local landowners says it’s the “largest single source of surface water in the state of Hawaii.” They seek “to ensure that Maui’s residents have a clean source of water for domestic, commercial and agricultural uses for this and future generations.” 81 Makawao Ave., Suite 205, Pukalani; 808-573-699; Eastmauiwatershed.org

KIHEI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION For many years now, the KCA has performed invaluable work connecting South Maui residents to a wide variety of issues affecting them. In terms of environmental preservation, the KCA is currently advocating for more water quality studies of the ocean off Kihei (and publicizing those studies currently taking place), hosting speakers on topics like climate change and speaking out on industrial hemp, land use and coral reef health. P.O. Box 662, Kihei; 808-879-5390; Gokihei.org

HAWAII NATURE CENTER Since 1981, the Hawaii Nature Center has administered programs for 15,000 elementary and middle school children each year, “helping to encourage environmental stewardship through hands-on investigative field study and experiences.” Their programs “are primarily conducted outdoors in the field, exposing children to a range of ecosystems in watershed, coastal, marsh and forest environments.” 875 Iao Valley Rd.,Wailuku; 808-244-6500; Hawaiinaturecenter.org

KULA COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION The Kula Community Association’s vision is simple: “preserve open space, support agriculture, maintain a rural residential atmosphere, and to work together as a community. The specific purpose of this association is to improve the quality of life for the residents of Kula, to promote civic welfare and generally to benefit the community of Kula.” They’ve long supported expansion of the Kula Agricultural Park, which is now going to happen, and have been strong voices advocating efforts to combat invasive species. PO Box 417, Kula; Kulamaui.com

HAWAII WILDLIFE FUND HWF is a nonprofit organization “dedicated to the conservation of Hawaii’s native wildlife through research, education and advocacy,” states their website. It was founded in 1996 by two former National Marine Fisheries Services scientists, Bill Gilmartin and Hannah Bernard–initially to protect Hawaiian monk seals. Since then, they’ve built a team “made up of educators, conservationists, researchers, naturalists, communities, volunteers and donors devoted to the protection of Hawaii’s fragile marine ecosystem and inhabitants.” PO Box 790637, Paia; 808-280-8124; Wildhawaii.org

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS LAND TRUST Since 2011, the nonprofit Hawaiian Islands Land Trust has worked “with private landowners, community groups, community leaders and government partners to protect Hawaii’s precious lands” by “integrat[ing] conservation into their land use plans in perpetuity.” As they say, “Proper protection defends against the threat of losing any more precious resources than we already have, while careful stewardship of these protected areas ensures their cultural and conservation values survive in perpetuity.” 2371 Vineyard St.,Wailuku; 808-244-5263; Hilt.org

LEEWARD HALEAKALA WATERSHED RESTORATION PARTNERSHIP We don’t often think of this now, but two centuries ago, the leeward side of Haleakala looked very different than it does now. Then, extensive forests covered the land. Today, after overgrazing and the introduction of invasive species, the forest cover has been reduced to just a tenth of what it once was. But 14 years ago, the restoration partnership formed from 11 private and public landowners and supporting agencies. Their goal is nothing less than “to restore dryland forests on Haleakala from Makawao through ‘Ulupalakua to Kaupo between 3,500 and 6,500 feet elevation.” 3620 Baldwin Ave., # 202/203, Makawao; 808-573-8989; Lhwrp.org

MALAMA MAUI NUI Once known as Community Work Day, the mission of Malama Maui Nui “is to educate, inspire, and empower individuals and communities to beautify

and maintain Maui Nui’s environment, thereby supporting its economy, quality of life, and unique Hawaiian culture. Through litter pickups, marine debris cleanups, invasive species removal, native planting, recycling events, and education programs, MMN brings individual volunteers, local businesses, community organizations, and government agencies together to promote the environmental health of Maui County.” PO Box 757; Pu‘unene; 808-877-2524; Cwdhawaii.org MAUI GREEN & BEAUTIFUL Once known as Maui Outdoor Circle, this organization lobbied to get billboards banned in Hawaii. Today they advocate for a variety of environmental issues. “We defend Maui trees, educate the Maui community on tree care and promote nominations of exceptional trees in Maui County,” states their website. “We support the preservation/conservation of the natural coast of Kanaha Beach Park and the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.” PO Box 402, Kahului; Mauibeautiful.org

MAUI NUI BOTANICAL GARDENS The Maui Nui Botanical Gardens are a serene slice of nature smack in the middle of Kahului. The place is dedicated to preserving the native plants of Maui. Here’s how they describe what they do: “By collecting, cultivating, and distributing native and Polynesianintroduced plants MNBG provides people with a gathering place to see and understand the important relationship these plants have to our economic, social, and cultural livelihoods.” 150 Kanaloa Ave., Kahului; 808-2492798; Mnbg.org MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL Now in its 10th year, the nonprofit organization is all about protecting Maui’s coral reefs. “The formation of the council was guided by the late Edwin ‘Ed Lindsey, a highly respected Native Hawaiian community leader,” states their website. “Today, MNMRC is a broad-based community group that works to bring human actions into balance with ecological and traditional Hawaiian principles.” They do that by sponsoring water quality tests, working with landowners to cut down on runoff pollution, promoting sustainable fishing and implementing their Maui Coral Reef Recovery Plan. PO Box 532533, Kihei; Mnmrc.org

MAUI RECYCLING GROUP MRG started in 1989 to, as they put it, “promote environmentally and economically sound solid waste resource management programs for Maui County and the State of Hawaii.” Since then, they’ve started and/or supported a huge array of “public education, demonstration, datagathering, technical assistance and community programs” designed to make sure we limit our ecological footprint. 2020 Main St., #806, Wailuku; Mauirecyclinggroup.org

MAUI TOMORROW FOUNDATION In terms of advocating for more parks and open space, Maui Tomorrow has been legendary for the last two decades. Maui Tomorrow helped make sure that there’s a 155-acre beach park at Makena and not luxury condos. Maui Tomorrow helped

ensure that Hawea Point is open to the public and not a luxury estate. Maui Tomorrow helped keep Kamaole Point open and not a private development. On issues of land use, invasive species, stream restoration and smart planning, Maui Tomorrow has no peer. 55 N. Church St., # A5, Wailuku; 808-244-7570; Maui-tomorrow.org PLANT EXTINCTION PREVENTION PROGRAM OF HAWAII The need to protect many of the rare plants in Hawaii and Maui from extinction is difficult. In 1990, the Hawaii Rare Plant Restoration Group established the Plant Extinction Prevention Program (PEPP), a group of 60 public and private agencies and landowners who want to make sure our endangered flora survives. “To date, Hawaii is home to 239 “PEP species” which have fewer than 50 plants remaining in the wild,” states their website. “This designation signifies their imminent risk of extinction and a heightened need to protect all remaining plants.” 808-933-7699; Pepphi.org

unscreen has turned into a daily-use product in households across Hawaii. With rising concerns about skin cancer, it’s become a product you apply before you go outdoors, not just to the beach. The problem is the substance in sunscreen that blocks UV rays on humans isn’t so good for our ocean’s coral reefs. In fact, the issue is so pronounced the Hawaii bill SB 1150 aims to ban oxybenzone from sunscreen used at our beaches to protect the ocean and reefs. Caroline Duell, CEO and founder of All Good organic skincare, says this bill is great but is just the beginning of the awareness we need to protect our ocean. “This trip is really about bringing the community together about understanding sunscreen and the damaging impacts on the reef and helping educate them,” says Duell. “In addition, we need to educate the public further on all of the additional issues beyond oxybenzone.” Oxybenzone was found to be detrimental to reefs in a study done in 2015 but it’s still widely used in sunscreen. According to the nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG), “Oxybenzone is a common UV filter in sunscreen. It is a hormone disruptor and allergen. Sampling by the Centers for Disease Control and Protection has detected it in the urine of 97 percent of Americans. Despite emerging concerns, the sunscreen industry continues to rely heavily on oxy-

benzone as an active ingredient: it was in 70 percent of the non-mineral sunscreens we evaluated for this year’s guide.” Duell says that though the bill is focused on oxybenzone, there are other damaging ingredients as well. “They want to get something out there that can potentially pass,” says Duell. “Oxybenzone is by far the worst, most insidious offender. I think they wanted to start with just one because it is very known. It’s a double-edged sword because we can’t have people thinking we passed this bill and now it’s all fine. There are many other ingredients that are just as damaging.” In fact, All Good identifies eight criteria for reef-safe recognition in their campaign. “One of the steps that we took was to outline a whole series criteria on what is safe and what is not safe,” says Duell. “There are basically eight chemicals that have been determined to cause damage to reefs. What is friendly to reefs is basically non-nano zinc oxides. The nanoparticles are just when you take the mineral, which is powdered zinc, and you literally crush it down to microscopic bits. The concern for the reef is that nanoparticles are so small they can be digested by the reef. The other problem is they can possibly pass into the skin. Those are the reasons to avoid them.”

one of the “greatest initiatives,” and it’s easy to see why. Located at the summit of Mauna Kahalawai in West Maui, the watershed “is home to plant and animal species that exist nowhere else in Hawaii, let alone the rest of the world,” states the company’s publicity materials. “It’s also one of the wettest spots on earth.” Today the watershed partnership cares for more than 11,000 acres, which represents slightly more than half of Maui Land’s holdings in West Maui. 4900 Honoapi‘ilani Rd., Napili; 808-357-0203; Puukukui.org

SIERRA CLUB OF HAWAII MAUI GROUP Like their national Sierra Club, the Maui Group’s whole purpose is to protect our natural environment and make sure natural resources are used responsibly and sustainably. Locally, the Sierra Club is at the forefront of issues like East Maui stream flows, biofuels, invasive species, cruise ships, coral reef degradation and sand exports, to name a few. P.O. Box 791180, Paia; 808-419-5143; Mauisierraclub.org

Other sunscreen ingredients like Avobenzone, Homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate and octocrylene are of concern. The vitamin A additive retinyl palmitate has been found to cause cancer and EWG reports that it’s still used in 16 percent of the products it surveyed in 2016. So how do we navigate the the compromise between skin protection and reef awareness? The EWG website publishes an annual sunscreen report that rounds up the latest research and concerns. You can find their list of sunscreen concerns, best rated sunscreens and moisturizers with sunscreen at Ewg.org/sunscreen. They also have a useful free app called “Healthy Living” and search base that can give you ratings and concerns on sunscreen that you already have or are planning to buy. It conveniently scans barcodes and gives you a breakdown of the ingredients and their safety ratings. In great big letters on the EWG’s sunscreen site it says that “sunscreen should be your last resort.” It also recommends bringing your own shade source for time outdoors. A recent National Parks Service brochure about sunscreen also says to cover up with clothing, hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from sunburn. The bottom line for sunscreen is that mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium oxide are recommended because they have not been proven to harm the reefs and ocean life. But this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safe. Spray sunscreens are another concern. While they’re rising in popularity, they pose a risk in the user inhaling damaging chemicals–including reef-safe ingredients like zinc

TRI-ISLE RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL Tri-Isle brings an army of volunteers to work for a variety of conservation, economic, education and cultural programs. WEST MAUI MOUNTAIN WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP Since 1998, this small organization in Lahaina has sought to protect West Maui water. “We build fence[s], remove invasive species, and protect the intact native forests of the West Maui Mountains,” states their website. “Endangered birds and plants have a better chance at survival, and best of all, our accomplishments help ensure that your faucet won’t run dry.” PO Box 13240, Lahaina; 808-6616600; Westmauiwatershed.org ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more Green articles, visit: mauitime.com/science-and-environment

oxide. Scientists just don’t know what happens inside the lung tissue when breathing in those mists of sunscreen. After taking numerous visits to many different stores to find a reef-safe sunscreen, I was disappointed to learn that there are confusing marketing messages about what exactly is safe. At Costco, the Alba Botanica brand’s Hawaiian Sunscreen packaging says it’s “Earth Friendly, Biodegradable, Broad Spectrum Potection” and it also says it has no oxybenzone or octinoxate and didn’t undergo any animal testing. But reading the ingredients list reveals that it does contain avobenzone, homosalate, octocrylene and octyl salicylate–all non-earth friendly ingredients. At Target, I found just one brand that offered zinc oxide sunscreen after combing two end-caps of various sunscreen. In fact, your best bet at finding zinc oxide-based sunscreens are local surf shops and health food stores. At Hawaiian Moons, I found a great selection of zinc-based sunscreens, and even a locally made sunscreen by Maui Natural Organics. I also found zinc oxide based sunscreens that have been highly rated by EWG at Second Wind, High Tech and Adventure Sports Maui. All Good will partner with the Hawaii Green Party at a Sunscreen Swap booth at the Haiku Flower Festival this Saturday, April 22 from 9am to 4pm. There, you can exchange your bad sunscreen for an All Good mineralbased sunscreen at no charge. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more Green articles, visit: mauitime.com/science-and-environment

Maui Marches For Science By Foster Modesette

E

arth Day is Saturday, April 22, and communities around the globe will gathering to participate in a be gat March for Science. On Maui, the University of Hawaii’s Student Ohana for Sustainability (SOS) club will be hosting march, beginning at the UH the m Maui Ma ui College campus at 9am, and following a route up and down follow Queen Ka‘ahumanu Avenue. “It is really exciting to have opportunity to be apart of a the op nationwide movement, to take a nation stand for science,” said Alicia Rittenberry, President of the SOS Club tenber and a Junior in the Sustainable SciManagement, Bachelor of Apence M

plied Science program at UHMC. The marches are a part of an initiative by the March for Science program (MarchforScience.com), which hopes to raise awareness about the diminishing support for the scientific community, and increasing attacks on scientific fact and science-based policies. The March for Science website lists budget cuts, censorship of researchers, disappearing datasets, and threats to dismantle government agencies as some of the issues the community is facing today. “The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. We

unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders and policymakers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest,” the March for Science website states. The March for Science Maui expects over 500 attendees. Children are welcomed, and pets should be limited to service animals only. Those who wish to volunteer can sign up on the March for Science - Maui Facebook event page. “To march on Maui gives us an opportunity to represent the amazing scientists that are conducting research, in Hawaii, as well as invite the public to show their support for how science serves the common good,” added Rittenberry. “We can all take a stand for science, and everyone is invited to participate.” In addition to March for Science, the week following Earth Day, on April 29, another important global march will be taking place: The People’s Climate March, a initiative by 350.org. During the week between these two marches, Maui Huliau Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting environmental literacy and leadership among Maui’s youth, will be hosting film showings in partnership with Maui Climate Action Network (CAN). Some of the films will include Leonardo DiCaprio’s Before the Flood as well as Maui Huliau Foundation student films. More information on these events can be found at the Maui Climate Action Network Facebook page. Everyone who attends is encouraged to use the hashtag #MauiClimateMarch on social media. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more Green articles, visit: mauitime.com/science-and-environment

Crashterpiece ‘The Fate of the Furious’ is mostly just a self-parody ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 136 Min.

I

found myself seeing the latest sequel to The Fast and the Furious on Easter Sunday, sitting next to Shea, my high school buddy. Shea loves to remind me that I took him to an early preview screening of the first movie in this series back in 2001. We were both living in Colorado at the time and attended a screening arranged by the studio meant to gauge the film’s box office prospects. As Shea and I walked out of the first Vin Diesel/Paul Walker carjacking action extravaganza, I told him I didn’t think the movie would do well. I recall saying, “It may top out at $60 million, but c’mon, Shea, it’s a blatant rip-off of Point Break. There’s no way this movie will catch on.” Shea replied, “I think it’s going to be huge. I can see them making two or three sequels to this, maybe more. This could be like Star Wars with cars.” I told Shea he was nuts and reminded him that The Fast and the Furious was opening against Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, which I predicted would

be “huge.” Shea and I still laugh about this exchange, in which my predictions proved to be embarrassingly wrong, while he came across like a cinematic Nostradamus. So, here we are, the eighth entry in this series. These dopey adventures haven’t lost any of their entertainment value, flamboyant showmanship or willingness to sacrifice logic and credibility in order to muster another potent thrill. This time, Dominic Toretto (played by Diesel) “goes rogue” by turning his back on his loyal crew and instead goes to work for a dangerous cyber criminal named Cypher (played by Charlize Theron). Toretto’s former colleagues, including the nutty Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), pursue him and try to figure out why he changed sides and abandoned his “family” ethics. Diesel is also one of the film’s producers and, of all things, uses this as an acting showcase for himself. The former “Riddick” has several big scenes here, where he yells, cries and shouts dramatically (you know, Oscar clip fodder). It was a big mistake on his part, as this is not the kind of movie where you show the world your inner Meryl Streep. On the other hand, Theron makes her icecold psychopath truly eerie, though she (and everyone else) go monstrously over the top

If you like these, wait until you see my train collection

during the finale. Of course, it’s not all bad– Jason Statham hasn’t been this charming in ages, Scott Eastwood is a good addition to the ensemble and Johnson tosses out WWE-ready insults like a champ. That said, the scene referencing Johnson’s Samoan lineage is embarrassing (and a better fit for a Ladybugs remake), but the nod to his 2014 Hercules is perfect. Fate has the same problem as the prior Furious 7: it peaks in the second act, then exhausts audiences with an overly busy wrapup. Nothing in Furious 7 could top the awesome sight of cars flying through buildings and, in the same way, nothing here matches the spectacle of the New York set piece. This sequence, which has enough vehicular stunt work and smash-ups to rival The Blues Brothers, is a sensational jaw-dropper. Far less stellar is the screenplay, which

unveils a story that will never leave the audience guessing. While there are fun cameo appearances and respectful references to Walker’s departed character, the only real surprises come from how ridiculous it gets. F. Gary Gray, who helmed Friday, the 2003 The Italian Job and the recent Straight Outta Compton, directed this. Memories of his terrific Set It Off are a reminder that he’s always been skillful at staging action. What he can’t do is add anything new to a franchise that’s already on auto-pilot. What can you say about a movie in which presumably thousands of people die bloodlessly but, absurdly always ends with Diesel throwing a barbecue? Everything about Fate feels like a self-parody, which is fitting, as nothing here could ever be taken seriously. These movies remain fast, furious and ludicrous. ■

Maui Tacos was the first Fast Casual Mexican restaurant in the Islands, founded by famed Pacific Rim Chef, Mark Ellman. The first store opened in Napili Bay in 1993, fusing the bold flavors of Mexico with the exotic taste of Hawaii to create “Maui-Mex.” Everything is made fresh to order and served in a fun FastCasual Format with the spirit of Aloha. CEO, Jeff Endervelt stated “We are excited by the opportunities afforded us having a 25 year history here in Hawaii and having served guests from around the World. This has given our Brand worldwide exposure and a global fanbase.” Investor interest has increased lately as Fast Casual restaurants continue to dominate the new restaurant landscape. Brought on to franchise the concept; VP of Development, Alonzo Botta expects to begin opening new restaurants on the Mainland and across the World later this year. The Company owns and operates 8 restaurants on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. MAUI TACOS is now accepting franchise applications throughout the states and internationally.

Horoscope

Sign Language TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Nature documentarian (and fellow Taurus) David Attenborough is one of my heroes. What an amazing career he’s created for himself: getting paid (probably well) to get up close and personal with Earth’s most fascinating creatures. Emulate him, would you? Find some way to earn money doing things you’d do for free. Too many of us–especially you security-craving Tauri–spend too much time earning money doing things we hate–sometimes even things that are contrary to our personal ethos. Can you see any chance of making things happen your way? If you do, it’d be a crime not to go full-throttle for it.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Sorry, Scorpio. Nothing exciting is likely to happen to you this week. Hey, don’t get dramatic. You can’t have earth-shattering events occur every week. Just because you’re ready for action doesn’t mean the universe will automatically provide it. Of course, you always have the option of stirring crap up yourself–but I wouldn’t. Come on, take a vacation from intensity. Practice being lighthearted and silly. Take nothing seriously. Put away your sting, your bedroom eyes, and your piercing stare. Have some fun. When was the last time you just played? This week, make your answer to that question: “Today.”

QUIZ understood

...to questions from page 4

1: D–400 2: C–68 3: E–5

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Twins love to communicate. You might be choosy about just who you talk to (and who you don’t), but I’ve never met a Gemini who consistently had trouble talking– about pretty much anything, anytime. So why have you shut yourself down, at least about one particular (and admittedly touchy) subject? It’s most unlike you. Do you really want that sore place to fester and get worse before you’ll open your mouth about it? That’s lame. Speak up now, because forever holding your peace isn’t an option. You’ll have to mention what’s bugging you, eventually, believe me–and it’ll be a million times harder to resolve later than it is right this second. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I wouldn’t say you’re riding a bike with square wheels, exactly, but they’re hardly round, either. Maybe using hexagons as tires is workable, but it’s not comfortable, speedy, or efficient. The worst part is you can only blame your limited progress on yourself, since you chose–consciously or unconsciously–the means you’re using to move forward, which can best be described as clunky, laughable, and nearly pointless. Why are you holding yourself back in this ridiculous and masochistic way? There’s a downhill section coming up; it’d be a shame not to be able to take advantage of it. Hammer those tires into perfect circles, already. The tool I’d use for the job? The unadulterated truth. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

I believe you can manifest stuff in your life just by wishing for it (in the right way). It helps if you’re not attached to any exact picture of results, so the universe can surprise you with something you’d actually like better than what you think you’d like. It’s a tricky, fiddly thing: your wish has to be fueled by real, personal desire, but not limited by excessive attachment to that desire. What’s something you truly want? Let your imagination soar beyond a new gadget. Try dreaming about love, opportunity, or experiences. Be specific, but not too specific. You may think it’s bullshit, but why not try it? You’re more likely to make it work this week than most. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

We use this word, “instinct,” to describe what animals know without ever having to learn. But what the hell is instinct? These creatures are born knowing things. They don’t need to be taught this knowledge. Beavers know how to build dams. Could you build an effective dam? This is knowledge, the kind it would take you or me a long time to figure out, learn, and remember. Where is it stored? Genes? Why don’t we seem to have genetic memory? Maybe we do. There are certain things you know without ever having been taught them. This week is a good one for accessing and using that knowledge.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Here you come, dripping wet from yet another cold shower. What’s gotten you so hot and bothered, Sag? I know it’s not just the weather. You’re worked up into an internal frenzy because of something else–an unrequited desire, or perhaps even a requited one. Ready for a break? Too bad. Because things are likely to heat up even further. I know, your first instinct in that case is to run for the hills. You’re not sure how much more you can stand. But fleeing won’t do you any good. Besides, you can take this, even if it’s more than just uncomfortable. Stick it out a little longer. See where you can take it. If it’s still “unbearable” in two weeks time, then you have my permission to skip town. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Every four years the rest of the planet (except America, pretty much) gets World Cup Fever. Everyone but us avidly tunes in to the ultimate global sporting event while America (mostly) skips it. Even though I’m hardly a sports fan, I let myself get sucked in, carried on the exuberant madness of those around me. I can’t say I ever care who wins–it seems arbitrary to me– but it’s a fun experience nevertheless. You may not naturally share the enthusiasm your partner or your friends have about something, but won’t you consider going along with it, just this once? I’m not talking about lamely humoring them while dragging your feet the whole way. I’m suggesting you wholeheartedly run with the pack this time. It might be a “waste’ of time, but you never know–you might actually enjoy it. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Don’t you wish, sometimes, that you could experience life as a video game? Screw something up, and you could just go to the last place you saved and play it again until you get it right. Unfortunately, life’s stakes are higher than any video game–you usually only get one try. This week, however, is an exception. You are likely to be granted a single second chance to redo one thing you definitely could have done better. I hope you’ve been practicing (in your head, at least). Because if you screw up this time around, you definitely won’t get another shot.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You can’t spin straw into gold–yet. But you are capable of performing similar wealth-attracting miracles–when you want to. Your problem isn’t lack of ability; it’s discipline over your own mind. There’s nothing I can say that will really help you with this. It’s up to you. I think you question, often, whether you truly want your dreams to come true. Once you stop doing that, they probably will. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

The most common question I’m asked: “How do you write your horoscopes?” I’m bored of my standard answer, so I’ve started making shit up. I’ve invented imaginary aliens (who I supposedly channel) as well as a mysterious and ancient monkey paw. I’ve enigmatically offered to show people, if they would only produce a handful of chicken bones and a fertilized goose egg. Sometimes I tell them I let whoever asks predict their own future. What would you say, Libra? What’s your horoscope for two weeks from now? Make a prediction for yourself. It’ll probably be more accurate than mine; I’ve only got a few charts and my intuition to work with. You have your whole life.

I love you, Aries. I can say that because I’ve adored every Ram I’ve ever met. But one thing I’ve noticed is you don’t hear how well you’re loved nearly often enough. Sometimes you’re led to believe that you’re too needy and self-centered, and shouldn’t crave so much affection. Bullshit. You do deserve more than you get. So here’s some more: You rock. Your warmth, generosity, and playfulness are awesome. Hopefully there’ll be a lot more of this kind of thing coming your way this week. You don’t even need to ask for it; just put yourself in situations where it might come your way; it probably will. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
