Maui Tacos was the first Fast Casual Mexican restaurant in the Islands, founded by famed Pacific Rim Chef, Mark Ellman. The first store opened in Napili Bay in 1993, fusing the bold flavors of Mexico with the exotic taste of Hawaii to create “Maui-Mex.” Everything is made fresh to order and served in a fun FastCasual Format with the spirit of Aloha. CEO, Jeff Endervelt stated “We are excited by the opportunities afforded us having a 25 year history here in Hawaii and having served guests from around the World. This has given our Brand worldwide exposure and a global fanbase.” Investor interest has increased lately as Fast Casual restaurants continue to dominate the new restaurant landscape. Brought on to franchise the concept; VP of Development, Alonzo Botta expects to begin opening new restaurants on the Mainland and across the World later this year. The Company owns and operates 8 restaurants on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. MAUI TACOS is now accepting franchise applications throughout the states and internationally.

Future Lt. Gov. Alan Arakawa?
MAYOR ALAN ARAKAWA WANTS TO BE LT. GOV.
NORTH KOREAN NUCLEAR ‘THREATS,’ TAKE TWO
On April 25, a friend of mine on Facebook posted that Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa had just said on his radio show on 105.5 FM that in 2018 he would run for the office of Hawaii Lieutenant Governor. We’d been hearing rumors here and there for some time that Arakawa wouldn’t actually retire when he’s termed out in 2018, but would seek higher office. We (and others) had thought he’d take a shot at the Governor’s office, but running for LG makes a bit of sense because the current Lt. Gov, Shan Tsutsui, has all but announced that he will return to Maui and run for Mayor in 2018. Of course, if Arakawa does run, he might have to make a few adjustments to the old demeanor. He’s gonna have to stop saying “Bullshit!” during Maui County Council meetings. He also might want to stop randomly denouncing “sacred rocks,” which only serves to antagonize Native Hawaiian activists. Still, we didn’t actually listen to the Tuesday morning radio show ourselves, so we can’t really be sure if Arakawa had actually announced his intention to run. So we contacted Maui County Communications Director Rod Antone, but he refused to comment because it’s an election-related matter. Given that Arakawa apparently hasn’t set up a campaign yet, and his most recent campaign finance statement ended on Dec. 31, 2016, we decided to ask Arakawa himself. So then we texted Arakawa, asking if he would, in fact, run for Hawaii Lieutenant Governor in 2018. He didn’t respond for an entire day, and then he used just one word: “Maybe.” A few days later, Arakawa told us that he thinks Governor David Ige will lose if he runs for reelection. Arakawa is also backing Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. for governor, and hopes to “reorganize state departments as none seem to be running effectively or as efficiently as they could or should be,” if he wins. It’s going to be a long campaign.
There’s nothing so depressing as watching a bunch of smart people–citizens, reporters and even a certain congressional representative from Hawaii–lose their collective minds over a single sentence. This has been going on for weeks now concerning North Korea, but everyone really seemed to lose it yesterday, when U.S. Pacific Commander Admiral Harry Harris testified before the House Armed Services Committee. His subject was, of course, the ballistic missile threat posed by North Korea (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to its friends). During his oral testimony, Harris said a dozen words that are scaring the hell out of just about everyone out here. “Kim Jong-un is clearly in a position to threaten Hawaii today,” Harris said in response to questioning by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii. As soon as I read that statement, I envisioned screaming headlines around the state (and the nation), telling an already nervous public about how a top American military leader had just confirmed that the threat posed by North Korean nuclear missiles was an immediate danger. I wasn’t disappointed. “Missile defense for Hawaii needs to be stronger, Harris tells Congress,” stated the April 26 Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Hawaii News Now followed up with “PACOM head to Congress: North Korea ‘clearly’ a threat to Hawaii.”
Rep. Gabbard’s own press release, sent out the night of April 26, was even more frightening: “Hawaii is home to the largest concentration of U.S. military strategic assets for well over 3,000 miles, making it a prime target for North Korea’s aggression,” she said. “As I travelled across Hawaii during my recent state-wide town hall tour, I heard from my constituents on every island their concern about the threat posed by North Korea’s increased nuclear and ballistic missile activity and capabilities that place Hawaii squarely within North Korea’s crosshairs. It is the people of Hawaii and our way of life that are at risk if North Korea’s missiles turn towards our shores. Admiral Harris’ testimony today affirmed the seriousness of this threat, and highlighted the need to strengthen our current missile defense infrastructure to ensure the defense of Hawaii. I’m continuing this urgent push to strengthen the protection of Hawaii against the threat that exists today, and the complex threat we know will emerge in the future. I urge my colleagues to take this threat seriously and provide the resources and tools necessary to defend Hawaii against this threat.” Wait–“North Korea’s aggression?” Hawaii is “squarely within North Korea’s crosshairs?” Full stop! Let’s step back a moment. Anyone can make a threat. But only a threat backed by the capability to carry it out is serious. To be clear, even with Admiral Harris’ recent testimony, it still doesn’t look like the DPRK currently has the capability to launch a nuclear-armed ballistic missile at Hawaii (though it does seem capable of launching such a missile at South Korea or Japan). Yes, the regime is developing three missiles that might be able to hit Hawaii, but most analysts believe those missiles aren’t yet operational. Ironically, we find evidence of this in Admiral Harris’ own testimony. While Harris’ oral testimony won over the media’s attention, it’s important to note that he also submitted 36 pages of written testimony to the House Armed Services Committee. At no time in this written testimony did Harris mention anything about North Korea posing an immediate threat to Hawaii. In fact, Harris’ written testimony DOES include this rather definitive statement: “Kim’s strategic capabilities are not yet an existential threat to the U.S., but if left unchecked, he will gain the capability to match his rhetoric.” Too bad none of the breathless news stories I
Overheard “Uh, yeah? I put my credit card in the wrong slot and now it’s stuck.” -Guy talking to the intercom at the Shops of Wailea parking lot gate, April 29
cited above (to say nothing of Gabbard’s recent press release) addressed that inconsistency in Harris’ testimonies. To learn more about what’s going on here, I asked Sharon Squassoni, the Director and Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Proliferation Prevention Program. She’s studied nuclear weapons proliferation extensively, and is the author of an April 14 Teen Vogue essay on what we really know about the North Korean nuclear weapons program. She said that Admiral Harris’ statement that North Korea is “clearly in a position to threaten Hawaii today” is “not consistent” with other statements he made during his testimony, but that “he was probably being cautious.” “In his oral testimony, Adm. Harris said a few times that Kim Jong Un’s rhetoric about striking the United States did match his capabilities,” Squassoni told me in an April 27 email. “In general, I’d put greater stock in his written testimony, which has likely been vetted up and down the chain of command, than in his spoken remarks. Sometimes even the best public servants mis-speak.” Of course, Squassoni also reminded me that the issue of nuclear weapons in North Korea is extremely complex and full of unknowns. “Yes, there’s a lot of debate about North Korea’s missile capabilities and it doesn’t help that North Korea has incentives to allow us to believe its capabilities are greater than they are,” Squassoni said. “The truth is we don’t really know but we can make our best estimates. Those best estimates are that North Korea doesn’t yet have that capability but it wants that capability. And as long as it continues unrestrained, it may get there.” There’s something else at work here as well. Sure, Kim Jong-Un’s regime wants us to be scared of his possibly nuking Hawaii–if I were a dirt poor nation facing possible invasion and attack by a superpower like the United States, I’d bluster about massive destruction, too. But the Pentagon is also big on scaring legislators (and taxpayers) because that’s how it gets new weapons–in this case, more missile defense systems. We’ve already seen in Gabbard’s press release an urgent cry for more missile defense. Given the seemingly endless need for the Pentagon to buy new weapons, it would seem Admiral Harris succeeded in that regard. “[P]lease remember that he [Harris] would be remiss in his duties if he did not use this opportunity speaking to Congress to ask for more money, so it’s no surprise that he would be recommending more missile defense capabilities,” Squassoni said in her email. Look, the North Korean regime may develop intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of hitting both Hawaii and the U.S. mainland. It’s difficult prospect–an April 16 North Korean missile test apparently ended in failure–but it’s not impossible. When this might happen, no one can say. It’s a scary possibility, sure, but right now, it’s likely just that–a possibility. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

MauiSphere The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States, provides approximately $100 million in annual grants to nonprofits that provide direct services to low-income and vulnerable individuals and families, primarily in the US and Israel. Grants are focused on meeting basic needs and enhancing an individual’s ability to meet those needs with emphasis on older adults, the Jewish community, and priority communities of Maryland, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Chicago and Hawaii. Earlier phases of the Cameron Center’s rehabilitation effort–more than $3 million in substantial facility improvements—include the installation of a Solar PV system, and extensive interior and exterior renovations. Phase 3 is focused on improving energy-efficiency and protecting the health and safety of facility users. Completion of construction is expected by this August. PHOTO COURTESY HARF

HARF TO BLESS THEIR NEW HOME
CAMERON CENTER GETS $1.1 MILLION GRANT The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation donated a $1.1 million grant to the J. Walter Cameron Center. The grant will provide funding for ongoing infrastructure improvements, helping the Cameron Center complete the third phase of a six-year comprehensive rehabilitation effort aimed at ensuring the center’s long-term viability as a one-stop community services facility. The Cameron Center houses 14 nonprofit agencies that serve a total of 60,000 Maui County residents–of which 30,000 are considered low-income. The Center is a critical component of the infrastructure supporting Maui’s health and social service providers by providing low-cost office and program space. “We are thrilled to receive such incredible support from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation,” said Cameron Center Executive Director Cesar Gaxiola. “The Cameron Center was built in the 1970s and we now must make crucial and costly repairs to continue serving Maui’s non-profit community and the people of Maui for years to come.”

The Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation (HARF) will bless their new 10-acre property in Waihee on Sunday, June 4. HARF, a foster based organization since their origination in 2011, has been saving thousands of animals over the years but lacked a facility from where they can do their best work. The foundation’s goal has always been to build a state of the art education and animal center for Maui’s animals in need. “We are thrilled to finally have a place to call home,” said Executive Director and cofounder Dawn Hall. “It’s not only a dream come true, but it’s the first step toward making our animal center a reality. We’ve saved many lives over the years, but now we will be able to do so much more.” Once complete, the future animal center will consist of an adoption and education center, veterinary clinic for companion and barnyard animals, dog park, walking trails and more. “We want to create a place where the community, animals and nature can come together for the betterment of all three,” Hall said. HARF anticipates breaking ground on their first building–a multi-use barn–by the end of 2017. Hall said the foundation wants its center to be a very special place. “A lot of planning and consideration has gone into its use, functionality and design and we want to do it right the first time around,” she said. During the planning, fund-raising and building process, HARF will continue to run its regular operations; HARF holds weekly adoption events at the Maui Mall every Saturday from 10am-3pm and Sunday from 11am-3pm.
The organization is run entirely by volunteers and they are always looking for people to donate time and foster families to help out. “It really takes a village to make a change in the way we look at animal welfare and we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish so much without the support of the community,” said Hall. For more information about Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation and the work they do, visit their website at Hawaiianimalrescue.org.
Maui waterman extraordinaire Kai Lenny recently broke several world records including the first channel crossing from the Big Island to Maui on a human-powered craft. The records were broken by the six-time SUP World Champion last month when he led the first-ever statewide beach cleanup on the Hawaiian Islands–the Downwind Voyage for Change. Lenny, alongside Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii and The 5 Gyres Institute, traveled more than 200 nautical miles through the Hawaiian channels transported only by various non-motorized crafts including a hydrofoil surfboard, hydrofoil kiteboard, a standup paddle hydrofoil board and a sailboat; each crossing is an average of 30- to 50-miles each. Lenny’s record-setting voyage allowed him to shine a light on the need for beach cleanups while empowering communities to combat oceanic pollution. With the help of Alison Teal, advocate for the ocean plastic problem and Naked & Afraid alum, the team encountered pollution head-on and learned creative ways to minimize environmental impact on oceans and coastlines.
Alongside his safety and environmental activism team, Lenny took five days to complete the voyage through the island chain. His first crossing, the Alenuihaha Channel (roughly translated by some as “very large trough-like waves”) between the Big Island and Maui, is generally regarded by the U.S. Coast Guard as one of the most treacherous channels in the world because of strong winds and high seas; the waters are also shark infested. For Lenny, traveling the channels also acted as training for a challenging upcoming competition season. While completing the Molokai 2 Oahu on the heels of the coastal cleanup finish line, Lenny broke the SUP world record by 41 minutes. “By breaking the Molokai to Oahu record, my confidence to do it again and to continue to set new personal bests is at max capacity,” Lenny said. “I feel like the door has officially been swung open to try new things on this channel and in this sport.” Lenny’s official voyage began March 28, when he traveled the Alenuihaha, crossing from Pololu, Big Island to the Maui Cleanup on Kite Beach on a hydrofoil surfboard (towed into the initial swells by the Red Bull Wa‘a outrigger canoe team). On March 29, he traveled to Maui County via hydrofoil kiteboard, first from Maui to Lanai then from Lanai to Molokai, with cleanups on both neighbor islands. Lenny continued the eco-adventure on March 30, traveling from Molokai to Oahu on a SUP hydrofoil board; and on the first of April, from Oahu to Kauai in a sailboat. Lenny broke several records including the longest swell ever ridden; longest time spent flying on a hydrofoil; record breaking time for crossing the Ka‘iwi (Molokai to Oahu channel) by “new class” craft; first channel crossing(s) by hydrofoil (Alenuihaha, Ka‘iwi); first launch of a hydrofoil by canoe or traditional Hawaii wa‘a; and, our favorite, the first Taco Bell burrito handed off by boat to surfer. ■

A June 2016 police raid on David Jessen’s Fresno County (California) farmhouse caused a $150,000 mess when sheriff’s deputies and Clovis Police Department officers “rescued” it from a trespassing homeless man–with the massive destruction leading to Jessen’s lawsuit announced in March. The misdemeanant helped himself to an ice cream bar, some milk and half a tomato, but was otherwise “unarmed;” however, by the time the police standoff ended, the “crime scene” included more than 50 cop cars, a SWAT team (and backups), two helicopters, standby ambulances, a police robot, and a crisis negotiation team. Windows, walls and wrought-iron doors were destroyed; tear gas and a “flash bomb” were employed. (Jessen suspects that the farmhouse’s isolation enticed police to decide that it presented an excellent training opportunity.)
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS “Pro-choice” activist Jessica Farrar, a Texas state legislator, introduced a bill in March to create consistency between the state’s rigorous regulation of women’s reproductive functions and those of men (regulation which, by the way, in either case she calls “invasive” and “unnecessary”). Because Texas’s anti-abortion laws highlight “procreation” as a crucial government interest, she believes male use of erectile-dysfunction drugs should be regulated as abortion is. Under her bill, individual use of Viagra or similar drugs must be preceded by “counseling” similar to that required by abortion laws, and since male masturbation involves the “wasting” of precious sperm cells, it, too, would require “beforehand” counseling.
EVERYONE NEEDS A HOBBY Jason Sexton told KFSM-TV in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in April that he alone had been digging the massive hole neighbors noticed, now 34 feet deep and with separate tunnels extending off of the main hole. Police had come to check it out, since it was on another person’s private property (and not the city’s, which Sexton had assumed). He said he had been digging off and on for three years to get an answer to whether “the Spanish” had been in Fort Smith centuries ago, mining iron, and, if so, the site should therefore be a lucrative tourist destination. Sexton said he felt he had to give his explanation: “Nobody in their right mind,” he said, “would dig a hole (this big) for no reason.”
CRIME REPORT At a time of growing awareness that some people seem almost addicted to their cellphones and instant 24/7 communication, police in Brookfield, Wisconsin, released surveillance photos of a woman in the act of robbing banks on March 25 and 27–while standing at teller counters and talking on the
8
MAY 4, 2017
phone during the entire episodes. Acting on a tip from the photos, police arrested Sarah Kraus, 33, on March 28.
WORTH A SHOT Paul Perry Jr., 39, sound asleep behind the wheel of his car, with motor running, at 6am on April 2, was in no position to talk his way out of a DUI ticket, but did offer a gentle challenge to the Youngstown, Ohio, police officer. Several times, according to the police report, Perry offered to “thumb wrestle” the officer to get out of the ticket. From the report: “Perry was advised officers would not thumb-wrestle him.”
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS The eight elite Ivy League universities are better thought of as “hedge fund(s) with classes,” according to a March report by the activist Open The Books, and thus there is little reason for taxpayers to have given them the more than $41 billion in grants and entitlements they received over a recent six-year period. The schools are already legendary for their $119 billion “endowments” (based on donations from alumni and aggressive investment). Those endowments are enough, according to Open The Books, that (assuming donations continue to arrive at the same pace) schools could provide free tuition to every student in the eight schools–in perpetuity. (Even if no new donations are made, the eight schools could provide such free tuition for 51 years.)
IRONIES Federico Musto was suspected recently by Wired.com of audaciously inventing academic credentials to help land his job as CEO of the company Arduino (a circuit-board manufacturer popular in the computer industry among coders creating, among other things, robots and motion detectors). Arduino’s work is “open source”–creating hardware that others, by design, can exploit and modify for their own loftier projects. It might thus be said that Musto’s claimed academic “accomplishments” (his so-called MBA from New York University and claimed Ph.D from MIT) are themselves the product of his having “open-sourced” his own, previously modest curriculum vitae.
BRIGHT IDEAS In January, local government and sexualassault critics unveiled a consciousness-raising exhibit on Mexico City’s trains: a plastic seat onto which is subtly molded contours of a male body, except with genitals sharply exposed. (Men supposedly have been spotted absentmindedly lowering themselves onto the seat only to leap up in shock.) A note on the floor by the body read (in Spanish): “It’s uncomfortable to sit here, but that’s nothing compared to the sexual violence suffered by women on their commute.” ■

’m a medical marijuana patient. I have a brain tumor and residual health issues from the brain surgeries and cancer treated in the last five years. But the other night, someone waltzed into my yard and took my three plants that were in my greenhouse. I’m just super bummed, feeling stupid for not trusting my instincts and beefing up my security. If you find out any groms on the Southside took a nearly mature plant and two just flowering this weekend, tell ‘em they’re stolen and next time they should smile for the camera because that’s what’s getting installed and when they’re found. This was so not cool. This is my medicine! ■

The truth about rat lungworm disease on Maui By Alex Mitchell Since the influx of media reporting about residents and visitors being infected with rat lungworm disease (RLWD) on the Big Island and Maui, there’s been a lot of fear in regards to buying and eating produce grown in the Hawaiian Islands. When I’m eating at restaurants, I’m asking servers if their making certain dishes with Hawaii produce. When grocery shopping, I’ve been turning away from the produce aisle and retreating the frozen vegetables section. There’s also been an alarming amount of speculation in regards to whether rat lungworm disease is in fact a threat. It is. And Maui residents need to make early awareness, education and early detection top priorities–especially given that a recent bill (SB 272) that would have appropriated money to fight the disease just died in the state Legislature. Rat lungworm disease, also known as Eosinophilic Meningitis, is extremely infectious. It’s contracted by ingesting the larvae of the rat lungworm parasite (angiostrongylus cantenosis). The RLWD parasite is a nematode, and part of a group of over 15,000 known roundworm type, according to a UC Berkeley study titled “Introduction to the Nematoda.” Rat lungworm disease and the parasite that causes it aren’t new; the disease

is commonly found in tropical zones in South East Asia, China, Taiwan, Australia and the Pacific Islands. It seems to have arrived on Hawaii Island via a rat host. As for how it got to Maui, nobody seems to know–perhaps from a rat, semi-slug or another carrier species that reached Maui from an inter-island shipping container. On April 17, the Hawaii Department of Health held a community meeting on rat lungworm at the Haiku Community Center. Presenters included Maui County Health Officer Lorrin W. Pang M.D., MPH., public health educators from the state Department of Health, representatives from the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), Hawaii Food Council, UH Hilo and University of Hawaii’s College of of Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). Pang started things off by saying that Mayor Alan Arakawa “considers this a crisis.” Cases of the disease are clearly on the rise. On Maui over the last decade, there have been just two cases of infection. But in the past three months, there have been eight cases all rooting from Hana and East Maui. Rat lungworm disease is spread from rats to slugs, snails, and other small species that eat rat feces. Pang presented a detailed lecture of how the RLWD parasite becomes infectious to humans and mammals. “This parasite is complex,” Pang said. “It’s
in the lung of the rat. The adult worm is in the lung vessel and starts to lay worms. The eggs pierce into the lung cavity of the rat, travel into bigger airways, and when the rat coughs or swallows its mucus, it goes into the digestive system of the rat and comes out in their feces. The rat feces are eaten by slugs and snails. The form of the worm goes through two more stages in the semi-slug or snail, transitioning into the parasite that infects humans and mammals.” Lissa Strohecker, the Outreach & Education Specialist from MISC, urged the community to tell MISC as soon as possible if they find semi-slugs on their property. “Right now we’re at the very beginning of the spread of the semi-slug population in the community,” she said. Of course, there are lots of slugs, and they can be really hard to identify. MISC wants to find the hot spots in the community, and suggests that everyone verse themselves on how to control rats and slugs with bi-weekly and monthly treatments. The public also needs to be extremely cautious to not spread the semi slug to other areas of Maui. This can be easily done by introducing a plant with an adult or keiki semi-slug into your home garden. In fact, this recently happened when someone purchased an Awa plant from Hana at a Kamehameha School fundraiser. There are many ways that the rat
lungworm parasite can be ingested and introduced to both a human and animal host. Adults, children and animals can be infected with RLWD (see “How To Protect Yourself” at the end of this story for a list of ways you can protect yourself). The most common way to be exposed is by eating raw or insufficiently cooked slugs, snails, freshwater prawns, fish, frogs and contaminated produce. Though you and your family may not plan on eating any slugs or frogs soon, you should be very aware of activities made by you, your small children and household pets in the garden. It’s common for cats and dogs to play and chase after slugs and frogs in outside areas around your home, and for small kids to dig in the dirt, then touch their hands to their mouth. According to University of Hawaii-Hilo research, one Big Island resident believed that she contracted rat lungworm disease just by handling a slug. Another thinks she contracted the disease by stepping on one, and a sloth at the Hilo Zoo became paralyzed when infected with the parasite after playing with the slug. Slugs and snails containing RLWD can also spread the parasite through their slime trails. Anyone who spends time in the garden and outside areas of your home should be very careful, and heed precautions to not bring the parasite from the outside to the inside of your home.
“
But there is good news. The State of Hawaii and many local organizations are coming together quickly to inform the community. Sarah Routley, a Community Health Educator with the State of Hawaii, says that Maui County has had a huge response from organizations in the community. From the University of Hawaii to MISC, School Garden Programs to CTAHR, the Maui community is showing up in big numbers to or-

You can safeguard yourself and your family by wearing gloves and shoes in the garden. Slugs and snails infected with the rat lungworm parasite are often found around people and pet food that’s placed outdoors, underneath tarps, in compost bins and trash cans, underneath potted plants and weed cloth and inside leaves that are adjacent to the core of plants and leafy greens. Semislugs can even crawl up the sides of your

ganize responsibilities and inform residents about how to better protect themselves. “We like going into the school because students are great family educators,” Routley said. “Not only can we educate the students on how they can better protect themselves, but students go into their homes and let their families know what they learned in school that day. We find that this is a great way to get information out into our more rural communities.” I also spoke to Micah Munekata, an official with the state Department of Agriculture’s Plant Pest Control Department. Put simply, they see this as a much bigger issue than just rat lungworm disease. “We have a vast amount of invasive species and the inter-island biosecurity measures that we have in place are around pre-border, bor-

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
● Always wear shoes and gloves in the garden and outside areas of your home. ● Wash your hands! ● Watch out for your children and animals in outside areas.
● If you find semi slugs around your property–notify MISC. Never use your hands to pick them up. Use “labeled” tongs and put them in a bucket of three parts water and one part Hawaiian salt for more than 72 hours to kill the parasite. ● Do not cut/break the heads off of greens and lettuces. Take each leaf off individually so you do not cut into a keiki/adult semi slug. ● Thoroughly wash all produce (vegetables and fruit) with running water. Take your time. Wear seeing eye glasses if you need them. Running water is the key here. No soaking. You are not just washing to clean off traces of slug trails, you are also looking for baby slugs, sometimes as small as a grain of rice or two millimeters in length. ● Do not use vinegar to wash produce! There is no scientific proof that vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, salt water, grapefruit seed extract or ice baths kill the parasite. In fact, it’s believed that these substances can create an aggressive response to a semi-slug–introducing more of the parasite. Just use clean water and rinse twice. ● The parasite dies if it’s frozen for more 48 hours. You can freeze your fresh produce for two days and alleviate any chance of becoming infected. ● When cooking, the parasite dies at 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Boiling point is 212 degrees Fahrenheit. ● Keep all food covered indoors and outdoors.

house and enter your home (this is a special skill that they have), and they can also crawl into water tanks, infecting a whole water system by drowning and releasing parasites into the water through their skin. Dr. Cynthia Nazario-Leary of CTAHR suggests that anyone with a water catchment system should transition to a 1-micron filter so that all water entering your home is potable and safe from the RLWD parasite. Even if your water tank cover is tight, she suggest that you remove your water tank cover and check for semi-slugs on a monthly basis. Right now, state and county officials want to find out where exactly the semi-slugs are found. “With regards to the semi-slug, the Dept. of Health and MISC will attempt to do a islandwide survey to see where the slugs can be found,” said Kenneth Yamamura, an Agricultural Specialist with the County of Maui. “Also important is whether or not the presence of the slug in a given area has the angiostrongylus cantonensis worms in them. In East Maui, there are about 30 to 50 worms inside a mature semi-slug. The percentage of semislugs carrying the worms runs from 75 to 85 percent of the population in East Maui.” When rat lungworm larvae are ingested by humans and mammals, they perforate the intestinal tract, spread into your blood vessels and eventually reach the meninges, the casing of your spinal cord and brain. That’s where the larvae (roundworms) will die. The larvae’s death sets off an eosinophilic reaction–basically, a battle to protect your immune system that’s manifested by an onset of symptoms. The only current way for medical professionals to diagnose a patient with RLWD is by administering a spinal tap. Symptoms of RLWD include abdominal discomfort, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, nausea, headaches, neck pain, joint pain, inability to urinate, disorientation, sensitivity to light, visual disturbances and hyperesthesia (sensitivity to sensory stimuli). Severe cases can require hospitalization due to bodily inflammation that leads to tissue and brain damage. The Department of Health is encouraging anyone with these symptoms to see a doctor as soon as possible.
the board to hire staff as necessary, and mandating new duties relating to the coordination of interagency invasive species and biosecurity efforts including data collection and management, support for rapid response to pests, and public resources for pest reporting and outreach. This particular measure was identified throughout the planning process of the Hawaii Interagency Biosecurity Plan as the #1 priority for all public and private stakeholders.” Munekata acknowledged that RLWD has been in Hawaii for some time, and will likely continue to exist here. “I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to stop the movement,” he said. “We are encouraging farmers to carry out the best management practices for clean growing spaces, a healthy farming environment and vectoring rats, slugs and snails from their properties.” A DOA memo sent to the Hawaii Farmers Union and the Hawaii Farm Bureau reiterates safe practices and approved control measures of the slugs. These measures include using organic iron phosphate pesticides and state-registered pesticides. It’s also important to remember that there’s no cure for RLWD. If you feel that you or someone you know has been infected, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial. In an average case, anti-parasite medication and steroids will be administered to decrease inflammation and attempt to move the parasite out of your body. But the tricky thing is that antiparasite medication can also cause inflammation as a side-effect. Since the parasite is in the brain, the goal is to avoid further inflammation that will damage the brain. In serious cases, medical procedures will be administered pending specific symptoms. But medical research and practice in terms of aiding in infection is limited in the State of Hawaii. Although doctors and medical professionals at UH Hilo are learning more on a case-by-case basis, most of the research and medical practices are based off treatments that

der and post-border measures,” he said. The Department of Agriculture also issued a formal statement on what they’re doing: “One of the important measures that is still alive in the current legislative session which ends this week, is the creation of the Hawaii Invasive Species Authority through SB776,” it states. “The establishment of the authority will expand upon the existing Hawaii invasive species council model by adding additional expertise to the interagency board of directors, authorizing

● Be cautious when eating raw and undercooked produce from potlucks and restaurants. Do not eat in places where the food preparer is not aware of RLWD and ways to properly handle food to avoid infection. Do not be afraid to ask servers and restaurant employees if they are aware of RLWD. In fact, MISC suggests that you ask them twice. ● If you’re buying plants and trees, inspect for semi-slugs, snails and frogs. You do not want to be moving an invasive and infected species from one part of the island to the next and into your home. ● If you’re buying produce from a local farm for a restaurant or your home kitchen, ask what that farm is doing to vector their property for rats, slugs and snails. If you do not feel that they are taking active measures to protect their clients, find one that is.

Paia Chef's Table JEREMY SOLYN’S NYLOS SERVES SOME OF THE SEXIEST FINE DINING ON MAUI

Ironically, Solyn had nearly opened a dive bar concept in Lahaina when he went all in on Nylos. “I became a certified sommelier in 2013,” says Solyn. “I was working at the front of the house at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. For a short time I would intermittently jump in when someone didn’t show up in the kitchen. Not for any reason other than to keep my hands in the game, and to help the restaurant. But that was infrequent. Typically I was on the floor there a minimum of five to seven days a week, serving and pouring wine. I was looking for about a year to find a space to open a restaurant. The truth is I

en readying plates to perfection, and when he introduces the dishes at the table there’s a level of give and take you don’t find often. The dishes look immaculate, and his pride, gratitude and love really show. What’s more, Solyn is willing to accommodate special requests–vegetarian, pescatarian, vegan, etc. with advance notice. You don’t often see that in tasting menus. “I have vegetarians and vegans call and if they give me a day or two, I can really come up with something special,” says Solyn. “I just did a six-course vegetarian meal a couple of days ago and they were loving it. A lot of restaurants with set menus won’t do anything like that. It’s just me cooking this food. But it’s also me doing everything, from marketing to fixing the ice machine. My wife is helping me a bit, but we have four kids at home. We just had a baby Valentine’s Day. We have a lot going on, a lot of irons in the fire.” Solyn’s menus are divine, and they may change as often as every other day. They include three courses and include a glass of sparkling wine and amuse bouche. You can add a wine progression–three glasses of wine chosen specifically to go with the dishes in fiveounce pours. The dishes are made with high quality ingredients–line caught mahi, organic veggies from Kumu Farms, Paia Lychee, Kula Strawberry, USDA prime beef that’s braised, broiled, sauteed, pickled, brined, soaked and marinated. His flawless culinary techniques bring to life the best of the ingredients. It’s provocative, provincial and sophisticated. “Ideally, we would like to have a couple of options in the future,” says Solyn. “At this point we’re staying small to maintain the quality and freshness of every single dish we create. We just want people to know that we are there to serve them. We are working hard everyday to earn the business of our clientele. We stay in the now. We stay right in the moment. We know that we’re only as good as the last plate we put out and the next plate that is going out. We focus on that.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

had been planning on doing something for over a decade. For like 15 years I had been thinking about it. I have written probably no less than 10 different business plans. I almost did a dive bar/fried food concept with some bowling lanes in Lahaina. I was close to signing a lease. It was the complete opposite of what we are currently doing with Nylos. Donuts and chicken wings and canned beers.” Before Maui, Solyn had worked at Moto’s in Chicago with Chef Homaro Cantu, who was known for his contributions to molecular gastronomy. Solyn also did a stint as executive chef at the Hilton in Tucson, where he was responsible for many outlets and menus. But when he saw the location in Paia, it felt like one of those meant-to-be moments. “It looked just like a dream that I had a bunch of years ago to do a tasting menu

here’s no sexier meal than experiencing a chef’s table. They’re glorious gastro-adventures. All the culinary cues come from the chef, and at no time are you really in control of the dining experience. It sounds risky, but nothing is gained without risk, right? Jeremy Solyn, the chef and owner of Nylos in Paia, knows this risk and reward inside and out (the name “Nylos” is just “Solyn” spelled backwards). Nylos’ space up on Baldwin Avenue is just the right size–a cozy open kitchen layout where you can niele Chef Solyn as he creates, but it’s also intimate enough that you could stay put and socialize with your dining partners. The 14-seat restaurant has just the right ambiance for Chef Solyn’s plates, and he’s quite accessible should you have any questions about what he is serving. “I’m either stupid or crazy because I’m doing fine dining in Paia,” says Solyn. “It’s definitely a risk. And sometimes with risk comes great reward. We feel like we have a really warm beautiful space. It’s intimate, tiny. You can see from the front straight into the back, which is kinda cool and lends itself to the enjoyment of the meal. You can see it prepared if you want to, and you don’t necessarily have to. Some foodies want to and seem to like that part of the concept. It’s a small setting, and kind of close and sexy. I think it’s very cosmopolitan– almost like being transported to San Francisco, New York or Paris for a couple of hours. I don’t think there’s anything like it on Maui. And there is certainly not any all-tasting-menu restaurants where you come in and get surprised as to what’s going to be on the menu.”
place,” says Solyn. “When I came in here, with the high ceilings and the open kitchen, I was like, that’s it. I jumped on it.” Solyn knows that a tasting menu is special. It’s for that special date night or special event. He’s dedicated to the level of service and commitment that it takes, and focuses on his ingredients as well. “This is geared toward putting yourself in the hands of the chef,” says Solyn. “The thing with that is that there’s a great transfer of trust from the guest to the operators of the restaurant. In this day and age, there’s sometimes a disconnect, because people do love choice. The quality that we have though, and the way that we are executing, the techniques that we are using–I know people will learn to trust us. I’m not Morimoto or Jean-Georges Vongerichten where I can slap down a tasting menu for $200 and say, ‘Hey this is how it is, you are going to pay for this because you know who I am.’ So I know it’s going to take a minute or two to earn that.” I think part of the dining experience at Nylos is Solyn’s honesty. You can see him in the kitch-

'Saturday Night Fever' The classic ‘70s disco drama returns for a special screening ★★★★★ Rated R / 118 Min.
T
he best reason to see Saturday Night Fever, either again or the first time, is that it’s probably not the movie you remember. When I bring up the disco-themed 1977 blockbuster, people immediately remember John Travolta tearing up the dance floor and little else. This is understandable, as Travolta’s thrilling, graceful dance moves, the Bee Gees-driven soundtrack (one of the biggest selling of all time) and its depiction of the disco age are what made it a giant, R2-D2free hit in year dominated by the arrival of the original Star Wars.Yet, while the expected highlights are there (the opening titles glow in neon as Travolta struts to “Stayin’ Alive”), Saturday Night Fever isn’t a comedy or a jukebox musical but a tough drama about a troubled teen ager’s dark journey to adulthood. Travolta was 23 when he played 19-year old Tony Manero, the Brooklyn teen who works in a paint store all day, so he and his buddies can spend their paychecks womanizing and dancing at the local disco. One of Travolta’s first lines is “F--- the future,” a clear

indication Manero shares the same the livefor-the-moment-and-nothing-more mentality of his knucklehead pals. When Manero meets Stephanie, another talented dancer (played by Karen Lynn Gorney, in an unpolished gem of a performance), he begins to take his life seriously. Manero ditches his long suffering girlfriend (Donna Pescow, in a heartbreaking performance), practices daily with Stephanie for an upcoming contest and, for the first time in his life, inches towards a meaningful relationship not based on sex. John Badham’s film has nightclub scenes that still dazzle (particularly Travolta’s amazing solo dance to “You Should Be Dancing”) and the camera often glides along with the dancers, capturing the sensuality of movement.Yet, the filmmaking isn’t showy or cynical. This is one of those low budget event films that was made from the ground up, as no one involved knew what a cultural landmark they were shaping. Badham, a journeyman filmmaker whose best works include the Frank Langella version of Dracula, WarGames, Stakeout, the underrated Michael J. Fox comedy The Hard Way and the Johnny Depp vehicle Nick of Time, was the perfect director for this. Scenes of Manero’s home life are refresh-
Disco Stu says Go see Saturday Night Fever!
ing and raw, as his tight-knit Italian Catholic family frequently lashes out at one another. When we see Manero’s bedroom, it’s a monument to everything ‘70s teens idolized: posters for Rocky, Bruce Lee, Wonder Woman, Serpico and Farrah Fawcett. His life outside his room offers a vivid snapshot of New York as an edgy, dangerous playground. Travolta’s transition from the cuddly Vinnie Barbarino on the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter to dramatic lead was as earth-shaking a TV-to-film transition as that of Leonardo DiCaprio. Travolta’s following movie was Grease (another mammoth hit) but his work here resulted in his first Oscar nomination and is far richer. Manero, to put it nicely, is a sleazy dirt bag and Travolta never shies away from that. Although a heavily sanitized PG version was later released, Saturday Night Fever in its original form (and now, in its Director’s Cut), is a very-hard R. Manero and his bud-
dies have nightly conversations that are profane, racist, sexist and homophobic. There are sexually explicit scenes scattered throughout. Travolta may have been a pin-up star when he made this but Manero is complex and rough around the edges–so is the movie. Prepare yourself: the dancing scenes dazzle but there’s nothing cute or campy here. Saturday Night Fever isn’t a title most would think of when naming off the best films of the 1970’s, a list that includes The Godfather, The Last Picture Show and Manhattan.Yet Badham’s highly influential film is an undisputed classic and deserving of rediscovery. Its closest cinematic cousin isn’t Dirty Dancing, Footloose or Step Up but the equally hard-nosed drama 8 Mile. You can see Saturday Night Fever on Sunday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 10 at the Maui Mall Megaplex. Showtimes are 2pm and 7pm on both days. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Let’s dispense with inadequate measures, shall we? I’m talking of the kinds of precautions you’re taking that will ultimately do you no good. These are the equivalent of hiding under a desk holding your head during a nuclear explosion. They’re worse than pointless. Not that you should go dancing out into the radiation storm and wait to be vaporized. But decide, ahead of time what you can actually do to help or protect yourself, realistically. Do that, then relax. Life’s unpredictable. It’s not safe. Be reasonable and wise; beyond that, why not dance? Living it up, post reasonable precautions, is the way to go this week. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
I know certain artists and writers who seem to have their tongues in the groove. They have this knack for reaching into the ether and snatching something vital straight from the cosmic unconscious–basically an idea we’ve all been thinking about recently. Then they all work with the idea at the same time, without really being aware that they’re riding the same wave until it crashes up on shore and they let everyone see their work. You’re tapped in now, too. Can you feel it? It’s your turn to play cultural shaman and introduce us to the next phase of the new ideas we’ve been percolating all together. What will it be this month, Gemini? Clue us in. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
You’re shopping for a stereo system. You already know it’d be really teenage and shortsighted to assume that bigger speakers are better than smaller ones. Sound quality’s determined by design and components, not necessarily their size. Your usage is important, too. For example, some people prefer a clear, crisp sound in a small space while others have to make their warehouse parties boom. Anyway, don’t be too superficial when making selections this week, whether you’re dealing with speakers or people. Be aware that you’re looking for the exceptional–and therefore should ignore broad generalities on principle–and that your needs are quite specific, and can only be met by something or someone just as fine-tuned. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I notice you’ve been smiling a lot lately, Leo. It’s easy when the sun is shining, like you’re a solar cell being charged right up and letting the overflow spill out in generous radiant good cheer. Don’t hold back. Like a solar cell, you’re not all that good at saving this kind of energy for later; it’ll just trickle out unnoticed until virtually nothing’s left. You might as well spend, spend, spend. You’re almost inexhaustible at the moment, so why not? Convert your abundance of personal warmth into karmic good credit. You can’t go wrong with karmic credit–and you can never have too much. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
You’ve got this week. Next week, astrological forces start gearing up to provide maximum resistance to your efficiency, so getting shit done will not be nearly as easy–especially all that nitpicky must-do crap that you’ve been sort of putting off. Get it out of the way; it’ll be a lot simpler during the next few days than it will be in the next few weeks, when it’ll take three times as long to complete, if you can complete it at all; you may find that some of it is just plain impossible. I know, that makes this week look kind of lame and crappy, overall. All I can say is: better this week be blah than this month.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Things have been kind of twisted for a while now–so long that you’ve almost forgotten to notice how turned around they are. Everyone knows that advice, no matter how good, simply can’t get you untangled–and we’ve tried, and tried. But how about a good example? How about someone living their life in a way that—while far from perfect and perhaps even as messed up as yours (but in different ways)–inspires or guides you to unravel your own mess? That might actually work. Keep an eye out for that someone this week, and next. They’re likely to appear.

ANSWERS

1: B–Provide financial support for low- and -middle-income households who want to invest in renewable energy equipment. 2: E–Five 3: D–Former WWE President Linda McMahon
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Take charge. It’s fun, and you’re good at it, even though on principle you tend to avoid too conspicuously taking the leadership role. But sometimes people just need to be told what to do, and at those times they’ll pretty much listen to anyone who acts like they knows what they’re doing. Unfortunately, that over-confident loudmouth is often also an idiot, and steers the poor sheep-folk in totally the wrong direction. Since you do know where you’re going and what everyone ought to be getting up to, not taking charge would almost be a criminal insult. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
I adore my Capricorn friends. But sometimes I long, desperately, for you to break out of your shells. I see you straining and struggling to shatter your cool, distanced reserve, and usually failing. I wish I could help you. Hopefully this week’s events can charge you with enough energy to smash your inhibitions, at least temporarily–while retaining enough control to keep from doing anything too embarrassing (mortifying memories only serve to strengthen the stranglehold you have on yourself). Let us help. What would help you break free (besides, you know, intoxication)?
VOTED BEST
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
I’d forgotten just how enthusiastic you can be; your spark and energy for life rivaled that of those Leos lurking on the opposite side of the zodiac (they’re actually quite like you, in many ways). Why had this slipped my mind? Because, unlike those socially-hungry Lions, you just haven’t been around much. How can someone with such a big personality become such a nonpresence? Remedy your absence by reconnecting with those you’d inadvertently distanced yourself from. They won’t hold it against you; charmed by your smile, they’ll let you pick up right where you last left off. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

I have tons of compassion for you Pisces, I really do. I imagine it’s hard to live in a world of such complexities. Most of the Fish I know spend a lot of time being just plain bewildered by life. That’s not criticism; I think it’s having fewer filters between you and reality, not more, that generates so much confusion. This is why so many Pisceans adopt artificial filters–and most of them aren’t as benign as rose-colored shades. In fact, your attempts at buffering and softening your world can often generate more gigantic, scarier monsters than you’ve ever had to face before. Be careful, when you’re sipping that cocktail, or knocking back that pill, or nurturing codependence with your partner, that you’re not actually making things worse, in the long run. Perhaps you can keep an eye out for a healthier, more sustainable filter? They exist. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Don’t buy crap you don’t need. That’s the lesson for you, coming up. Try it if you don’t believe me. You’ll see. Don’t come crying to me when you’re filled with overwhelming regret. Guilt, even. This doesn’t mean you can’t be hedonistic or lavish at all. After all, you’re a Libra. You do need a certain amount of luxury in your life, don’t you? Just keep it to a minimum, especially avoiding impulse purchases, which will pretty much never work out as you hoped. Keep the luxuriousness to a reliable minimum and you’ll have a month of perhaps relatively moderate pleasures–but you’ll enjoy them a lot more because you’re not busy kicking yourself.
Where are you all? Your fans (or would-be fans) are looking high and low for you–but a lot of them are emerging from the social fray empty-handed. This is when they turn to me and wonder: Where the hell are all the Aries? How do I meet a good Aries? Thus–for your own good as well as ours, since I know how much you enjoy admiration (and despise unsolicited criticism)–I ask you: How does one meet a good Aries? How do we catch your eye? Let us know. I promise, we’ll only use the information to make your lives richer and more interesting. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
