(+2.1% to 109,818).” As you can see from the following stats, taken straight from the HTA, Hawaii has definitely taken a hit from international tourists: • Australia: Fewer available air seats contributed to a decrease in visitor arrivals in April 2017 (-11.3% to 26,934) and in the first four months of 2017 (-5.1% to 91,085); • China: Visitor arrivals rose in April 2017 (+5.5% to 13,781) but declined through the first four months of 2017 (-5.8% to 50,894) compared to last year; • Korea: Visitor arrivals decreased in April 2017 (-9.9% to 16,222) and year-to-date (-3.4% to 78,049). The decline in April 2017 was partially caused by reduced seat capacity, as a carrier suspended service to Hawaii until late May 2017 for maintenance; • Taiwan: Visitor arrivals declined in April 2017 (-5.8% to 1,243), but continued to increase year-to-date (+2.6% to 6,054) compared to a year ago; • Europe: Visitor arrivals from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Swit-

The fact that the ocean is creeping up ever further on Maui and Hawaii shores is a reality anyone here can see. We see most pronounced it in the form of old trees toppled over in the sand as the surf sloshes around their roots on Maui’s north shore and along the road between Olowalu and the Pali. And this past weekend, so-called King Tides really pounded home the feeling that the big blue Pacific will, sooner than any of us wish, make coastal living around here decidedly more difficult. Local TV news ran with tons of footage of a sandbagged Waikiki, but as you can see from the accompanying photo, taken near Olowalu, water levels got pretty high on Maui, too. Sea level rise is the planning nightmare of the future for Hawaii’s coastal communities. All of our beaches, perhaps in our lifetimes, will become a thing of the past. “This has big economic impacts and the structures here are increasingly in danger,” said Phil Thompson of the University of Hawaii Sea Level Center in a May 24 Hawaii News Now story. The next day, Mark Merrifield of the UH Sea Grant Program told KITV that “The problem is that we are going to see more and more of this as sea level keeps getting higher and higher, more of these tides poke through and reach the threshold level.” While our civilization may have already doomed itself to live with climate change, it’s still possible for us to moderate its effects–if we act in concert through agreements like the Paris Accords, which limits each nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. Of course, given that the current President of the United States is a corrupt fool, this is probably asking for too much. Indeed, the Los Angeles Times reported on May 27 that “this week,” Trump will decide whether the U.S. will continue to adhere to the terms of the pact. Keep in mind, though, that the growing physical evidence of climate change is irrelevant to Trump. Same with the fact that 195 nations signed on to the Paris agreement. Ditto the ironclad commitments from the rest of Europe on the immediate need to deal with
climate change. Even the recent plea from Exxon–EXXON!–that the U.S. should continue to take steps to lessen our collective carbon footprint is likely lost on the old doofus. No, the bitter sociopath Trump can see none of that, and cares not one bit about anything beyond his need to live a gold-plated life. “We have to stay in the Paris deal because climate change is a threat to agriculture, fishing, security, prosperity, and our way of life,” U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, said on Twitter this weekend. A few hours later, Schatz–one of the biggest environmental advocates in the U.S. Senate–followed that up with this: “Dumping the Paris agreement would anger our allies and embolden our adversaries. You don’t have to be a climate hawk to think that’s dumb.”
numbers sure seem to show that a lot of international tourists are finding somewhere else to take their vacations. “Analyzing data gathered from over 50 million mobile users across the world, location intelligence company Foursquare found that America’s share of international tourism to leisure locations has declined by an average of 11 percent since October 2016, with a low of 16 percent in March,” NBC reported. “While the strength of the U.S. dollar may be having causing some foreign visitors to decide to vacation elsewhere, the Trump administration’s policies on immigration and tourism visas and the current ban on a broad range of electronic devices in the cabins of U.S.-bound aircraft from certain countries certainly isn’t making the United States seem tourist friendly right now.” The next day, the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) released one of their regular statements on visitor spending. Though its news release mention highlighted an overall increase in visitor spending in Hawaii in April, the stats on international travel are pretty much all bad. In fact, after
IS HAWAII TOURISM FALLING INTO A ‘TRUMP SLUMP?’ For a while now, economists and pundits have wondered if tourist visits to the U.S. would get hit with a “Trump Slump,” since just about everything Herr Trump has spent just about every minute of the last four months relentless proving to the world that he is the quintessential Ugly American. Hell, I wouldn’t want to the visit the U.S. either–and I already live here. Anyway, on May 24, NBC and a bunch of other news outlets reported that initial

noting increases in visitor spending from Japan and Canada, the HTA noted that “Visitor spending from All Other International markets declined in April 2017 (-7.9% to $220.9 million), as lower daily spending offset the increase in arrivals

zerland decreased in April 2017 (-4.4% to 12,119) and year-to-date (-5.3% to 36,830) versus last year; • Latin America: Visitor arrivals from Mexico, Brazil and Argentina increased in April 2017 (+15.5% to 2,246) but declined through the first four months of the year (-12.3% to 7,944). Now I’ll go out on a limb and say that I can’t imagine Trump is disappointed in this. He’s a wanna-be dictator prone to temper tantrums, and I’m sure he’s giddy that states like Hawaii– which overwhelmingly voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election–are losing money. Given the fact that Congressional Republicans seem happy with Trump’s embarrassing imbecility and immaturity, look for these numbers to continue to slide. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird SWEET, SWEET REVENGE It’s legal in China to sell electric “building shakers” whose primary purpose apparently is to wreak aural havoc on apartment-dwellers’ unreasonably noisy neighbors. Models sell for the equivalent of $11 to $58–each with a long pole to rest on the floor, extending ceiling height to an electric motor braced against the shared ceiling or wall and whose only function is to produce a continuous, thumping beat. Shanghaiist.com found one avenger in Shaanxi province who, frustrated by his miscreant neighbor, turned on his shaker and then departed for the weekend. (It was unclear whether he faced legal or other repercussions.)

Mats Jarlstrom is a folk hero in Oregon for his extensive research critical of the short yellow light timed to the state’s redlight cameras, having taken his campaign to TV’s 60 Minutes and been invited to a transportation engineers’ convention. In January, Oregon’s agency that regulates engineers imposed a $500 fine on Jarlstrom for “practicing engineering” without a state license. (The agency, in fact, wrote that simply using the phrase “I am an engineer” is illegal without a license, even though Jarlstrom has a degree in engineering and worked as an airplane camera mechanic.) He is suing to overturn the fine.
THOSE AMAZING HEART SURGEONS Last year, surgeons at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), for only the second time in history, removed a tumor “sitting” on the peanut-sized heart of a fetus while the heart was still inside the mother’s womb–in essence successfully operating on two patients simultaneously. The Uruguayan mother said her initial reaction upon referral to CHOP’s surgeons was to “start laughing, like what, they do that?” (The baby’s December birth revealed that the tumor had grown back and had to be removed again, except this time, through “ordinary” heart surgery.

Thirty-four residents of State Street in Brooklyn, New York, pay a tax of more than $1,000 a year for the privi-
lege of sitting on their front stoops (a pastime which, to the rest of New York City, seems an inalienable right). (The property developer had made a side deal with the city to allow the tax in exchange for approving an architectural adjustment.) (2) The town of Conegliano, Italy, collects local taxes on “sidewalk shadows” that it applies to cafes or businesses with awnings, but also to stores with a single overhanging sign that very slightly “blocks” sun. Shop owners told reporters the tax felt like Mafia “protection” money.
FINER POINTS OF THE LAW “Oh, come on!” implored an exasperated Chief Justice Roberts in April when the Justice Department lawyer explained at oral argument that, indeed, a naturalized citizen could have his citizenship retroactively canceled just for breaking a single law, however minor -- even if there was never an arrest for it. Appearing incredulous, Roberts hypothesized that if “I drove 60 miles an hour in a 55-mile-an-hour zone,” but was not caught and then became a naturalized citizen, years later the government “can knock on my door and say, ‘Guess what? You’re not an American citizen after all’?” The government lawyer stood firm. (The Supreme Court decision on the law’s constitutionality is expected in June.)
OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY Emily Piper and her husband went to court in January in Spokane, Washington, to file for a formal restraining order against a boy who is in kindergarten. WAIT, WHAT? A private plane crashed on take-off 150 feet from the runway at Williston (Florida) Municipal Airport on April 15, killing all four on board, but despite more than a dozen planes having flown out of the same airport later that day, no one noticed the crash site until it caught the eye of a pilot the next afternoon.
DIDN’T THINK IT THROUGH Edwin Charge Jr., 20, and two accomplices allegedly attempted a theft at a Hood River, Oregon, business on April 23, but fled as police arrived. The accomplices were apprehended, but Charge took off across Interstate 84 on foot, outrunning police until he fell off a cliff to his death. And police said Tara Cranmer, 34, tried to elude them in a stolen truck on tiny Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, on April 22. Since it is an island, the road ends, and she was captured on the dunes after abandoning the truck. ■

epaniwai Park was beautiful today until I heard the sounds of voices commanding a dog to fight. I glanced around the wall and saw you sic your dog on a cat that was under the car. You then attacked the cat, hitting it brutally across the back with a bat sized branch. The cat still had the energy to head for a tree. You then punched the cat off the tree. Cheers were coming from your friends. We were ready to step in but you had two pit bulls trained for violence. You saw us witness your actions, grabbed your dog and yelled that you love animals and that the cat was attacking your dog. Brah, a cat is an animal, too. In the sanctuary of the park, so close to the Needle we could feel the pain of all that has gone before. Sending you Love and Healing. ■

Poppin’ on the tandem board
I
got butterflies in my stomach recently as I watched a YouTube video of a guy dropping into huge waves at Jaws on a foilboard powered with a kite. This sport is the next level of kiteboarding, and to find out more I talked with Jared Carlson of Kiting.com. He’s mastered quite a few kiteboarding tricks and shares them at his kite school. “We have a kiting operation on the North Shore,” says Carlson. “We give kiting instructions for beginners to advanced students. We also have foilboarding lessons for our students. We’re the only kite operation on Maui that offers tandem kiteboarding. Tandem is basically taking somebody out in the water that has never kited before and actually having them with a pilot and go ride around. It’s similar to a skydiving lesson where you generally go tandem. Same thing for paragliding. Going tandem can give you a basic idea of what the end result is of kiting. It’s a great way to see it.” Going tandem is the perfect way to test out the sport to see how you really like it, before you invest in equipment. “It’s good for a number of reasons,” says Carlson. “One the teaching aspect. You can actually take them out there and teach them, not just theory, but the practical aspect. You get a number of people who are not sure if they want to get into the sport because there is a good amount of time involved on being able to learn to kite. There’s a lot of money associated with it. So going tandem is a good gateway to see if you like it. I would say 99 percent of the students we take out tandem pick up kiting right after.” Surprisingly, no experience is necessary to take lessons. “Getting into kiting is quite a bit easier than say windsurfing,” says Carlson. “Generally we like to have about 10 years old and up. The number one thing with our students is making sure they are comfortable in the water and they can swim well. That’s essential for getting out there. Students don’t need any wind knowledge or any other requirements. Most of our lessons are geared toward adults. Everyone is going to pick up the sport differently. Some people can pick it
up in the course of one lesson, but generally students will need three to six lessons to be proficient with it. So a lot of our students go for our nine-hour kiting lesson. It’s a threeday course, three hours per day.” Then there’s kite foilboarding, which has certainly evolved the sport. In fact, as Carlson points out, it’s “sort of exploded” on Maui. Carlson’s school is the first to offer lessons. “Basically foilboarding feels like you are snowboarding in five feet of powder,” says Carlson. “You have no real strain on your knees, it’s really smooth riding. It’s really about balance when you are up. It’s like an airplane underwater–it needs a certain takeoff speed before you can pull back on the board to bring it up.You need to get going about eight to 10 knots before you apply a bit of back pressure and when you do that, the board will start to elevate out of the water. Once you’re up, the resistance of the board reduces by 12 to 15 percent. To put that in kiting terms, let’s say you’re riding a 10-meter kite on a wakeboard–you can drop the kite size down in half to a fivemeter kite and use a foil board. With the foil you need less pull to get up and going. We have a threshold of about 15 miles an hour of wind–below that kiting gets really difficult. Now with foiling it’s common to see guys on the water in nine-miles-an-hour of wind, which before wasn’t possible.” Of course, I asked Carlson about that YouTube video of the guy kite foilboarding at Jawz. He certainly knows the video. “That was me!” says Carlson. “It was about 40 feet. Basically after I did that, people saw me as more of a guru for kite foilboarding. If you can do it at that extreme, then teaching the sport is relatively easy. Teaching has evolved too in the past couple years–the equipment I learned on was way harder! We’re able to teach people safer and easier on the new technology. We’re getting people upwind on their first lesson. It’s pretty neat.” For a tandem kiteboarding experience and lessons contact Carlson at Kiting.com. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more things to do in Maui County, visit: mauitime.com/activities

environmental aspect and their parents love that we have an educational component as well.” Picking from their variety of sparkling, colorful mermaid tails was one of my favorite parts because I felt like I could express my personality through the one I chose. I decided on a fiery red so that I would stand out against the endless expanse of blue when I was underwater, and to signify my confidence in being able to swim like a mermaid. They have plenty of other colors to choose from, so I can guarantee you’ll find the right one for you! Jones said the most popular colors with guests are sparkly purple, hot pink and teal. As an instructor, she switches colors every six months due to how often she uses her tail. She also has a personal silicone tail that is light blue and features a monarch butterfly design on the tail. “It’s to represent the connection between protecting the land and sea, as you can’t focus solely on saving one and not the other,” Jones said. “The land and sea are so interlinked and I think people forget that even if they’re back in a land-locked part of the world, their choices can still affect the ocean.” We took our tails down to the shore and had a little photoshoot on the beach with the GoPro that instructors bring along on each lesson. The photo documentation is provided for free, or Hawaii Mermaid Adventure can arrange for a professional photographer to capture your experience if you’d prefer. With the sun glistening off my newly acquired tail, I was eager to start swimming. We scooted into the ocean with our tails on and immediately began gliding through the water with the help of our fins. Since I had no problem with the kicking motion required to stay afloat while wearing the tail, I didn’t need a full swimming lesson and instead got to spend the day bonding with Jones over our love of Maui and the sea life surrounding the island. It felt like we were friends spending a day at the beach together, which made me feel comfortable being myself (and finally in my true form, as a mermaid). I followed Jones in her sparkly black tail as she guided me to a small floating platform that held all the toys we could play with including
way you can. For some that means refusing plastic, for others it’s buying natural fiber clothing to reduce microfiber pollution, some even decide to only eat sustainably caught local fish as their way of helping the environment and reducing the impact of overfishing or illegal fishing. All of these actions that help protect the sea is what makes a mermaid and to do these things, you don’t need a tail.” Jones is one of two instructors who are marine experts trained as lifeguards and certified in first aid and CPR to safely guide guests through their personal mermaid experiences. They also go through a rough water safety and rescue course as well as Hawaiian cultural trainings every year. “With instructors the biggest thing we look for is passion. Passion can’t be taught,” Lara said in a statement. “We want instructors who are passionate about the marine world, protecting it and sharing that passion with our visitors.” Outside of their individual classes, Hawaii Mermaid Adventure has also been working to spread environmental awareness by participating in community involvement events and working on projects with other local companies. Every month, Hawaii Mermaid Adventures teams up with Hawaiian Paddle Sports for their Malama Maui campaign to complete a service project with a local nonprofit organization. You can also meet Jones at Summer Splash Days at the Maui Mall’s Paradise Fountains. She’ll be there to talk about ocean conservation and how to become an ocean steward on every Thursday in June, from 11am to noon. HAWAII MERMAID ADVENTURES

ver since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of turning into a mermaid. It sounded like the adventure of a lifetime–spending all day playing in the waves, hiding among the reef and being swept away by the ocean currents. My childhood fantasy turned into reality through Hawaii Mermaid Adventures, an ocean activity company based in South Maui that provides mermaid lessons with an environmental twist. “We are thrilled to offer this incredibly memorable experience, especially to anyone who has dreamt of becoming a mermaid,” said owner Timothy Lara in a press release. “With Hawaii Mermaid Adventures, guests can explore the ocean, coral reefs and underwater wildlife in a fun and unique way.” Before slipping on a mermaid tail and diving into the water, instructors give a land lesson about ocean conservation and reef protection. Lila Jones, a marine biologist who helped start the company and became its first instructor, was my guide when I had the opportunity to be a mermaid for the day. She spoke about the importance of reducing the utilization of single-use plastics, which pollute our oceans and can easily be replaced with a reusable alternative. She also encouraged me to only apply reef safe sunscreens that don’t contain oxybenzone, which is toxic to our reefs and fish, but also the main ingredient in most sunscreens. Jones said to pay attention to labels and only buy sunscreens containing non-nano zinc oxide. We also went over how to identify native fish we might encounter and how to behave properly around particular sea creatures, such as turtles, which are often spotted in the area. Instructors also lead a small beach clean-up to show how we can do our part to keep the ocean clean. This is all apart of their vision to create a “pod of sustainably-minded mermaids who use their voice to cultivate a sense of kuleana globally” by helping people strengthen their understanding of and relationship with the ocean. “I like to encourage guests to become responsible ocean stewards,” Jones said. “I also like to offer easy suggestions that people can do to help minimize their impact on the environment. Kids are really responsive to the educational and
hula hoops, pool noodles, snorkels and more. She weighed the hula hoops down to the ocean floor so that we could swim through them and the game was to try not to touch them. It was honestly a lot harder than it sounds, but I had a blast trying to get better at the trick throughout the day. As other people entered our cove doing other water activities such as paddle boarding, snorkeling and scuba diving, we made friends with everyone who came our way–and they were all certainly ecstatic to have a mermaid sighting. The humans weren’t the only ones interested, we also had an amazing encounter with a massive green sea turtle. While staying a safe distance, Jones snapped a few photos of me swimming with the beautiful aquatic creature. Not wanting to miss a moment, I quickly put on a snorkel and followed the turtle through the reef until it eventually went onto the beach for a sun bath. For Jones, having these close encounters with turtles has led to some of her most memorable lessons. “There was an instance where a guest and I were taking a break away from the reef. We were in fairly deep water (about 20 feet deep) and had lots of space around us,” Jones said in a statement. “I had started talking about the turtles in the area when one decided to surprise us by swimming in between the two of us. We were only a couple of feet apart and had no idea the turtle was around until it was right between us.” These mermaid adventures aren’t just for experienced swimmers, keiki are welcome and the instructors are trained to keep them safe during their excursion. Tails vary in size, which means mermen are able to join in on the fun, too. Every party gets a private two hour session starting at 7:30am, which is undeniably worth that early morning alarm. If that just isn’t enough time for you to fully enjoy your mermaid fluke, there are also select colors available for purchase online so your adventures can continue whenever you please. “Often times, little kids are wishing so much that they’ll grow a real tail when the tail isn’t what makes a mermaid special at all,” Jones said. “What makes a mermaid real is people’s ability to love the ocean in such a way that you choose to take care of it in any

Taste paradise on tour
E
xploring Maui on your own can be daunting. Often, taking a tour is the easiest way to dive into what interests you, or learn a little more about the surroundings. I recently checked out the Maui Pineapple Tour–it’s a taste of paradise straight off of the fields that line the slopes of Haleakala. To show a different kind of paradise, Carrie and David Adelmann started the Maui Craft Tours. Their tour bus takes you to several stops along the artisanal craft beverage and food highway of Maui. You catch the Maui Pineapple Tour across the street from the Hali‘imaile General Store. In fact, you can package lunch in with your tour, or a stop at the Hali‘imaile Distilling Company. This tour is the perfect way to explore this region, but what I really loved was getting to know the behind-the-scenes at the pineapple plantation. This tour has two tour times daily, and runs seven days a week. “Maui Gold Pineapple Company started from the original Maui Pineapple Company,” says Mary Britton, Director of the Maui Pineapple Tours. “MPC was the United States’ largest grower, processor and shipper of Hawaii pineapples for over 100 years (1909-2009). After Maui Pineapple Company decided to close down, a group of former employees and investors decided to form Maui Gold Pineapple Company to keep the tradition of growing Maui Gold brand pineapples. They officially started in January, 2010. They kept over 1000 acres of fields in Hali`imaile (along with the factory) and focus on mainly local production. Overall, 70 percent of the pineapples are kept locally while 30 percent are for mainland/international consumption. Companies like Maui Winery, Maui Brewing and Hali‘imaile Distilling rely on the pineapple for some of their flagship brands.” There’s nothing sweeter than picking a pineapple in the field and eating right there,
a highlight of the tour. Our guide Mike was really knowledgeable about the operations. The plantation also has piles of pineapple compost and pineapple for livestock feed– just ask at the main office. Best of all, they send you off with your very own box of pineapples. For more information on their tours go to Mauipineappletour.com. The Craft Brew Tour just started in March. The Adelmanns are really excited about sharing the food and drink culture they love on Maui. “For us, it’s about more than eat/drink/ buy local,” Carrie says. “It’s about genuinely connecting with both the people and products that have influenced today’s craft culture on Maui. Our goal is to provide our guests with once-in-a-lifetime culinary adventures that showcase the hand-crafted food and beverages being made here in Maui. So we work to make sure every detail of our guests’ experience falls in line with the philosophies that our craft partners live by–provide only the highest quality products, use sustainable business practices, keep our partners and community at the forefront of every decision, focus on the fine details and share stories in an honest and authentic way. Our hope is that these experiences allow our guests to truly embrace the artistry and passion behind the island’s incredible craft community.” Maui Craft Tours hit up alcohol purveyors like Maui Wine, Ocean Vodka and Maui Brewing Co., restaurant hot spots and farms in a way you wouldn’t be able to experience on your own. Different days of the week feature different packages, with tours titled “Taste of Maui,” “Ultimate Craft Adventure” and “Field to Glass.” They also do custom private tours. ART WORKSHOPS Awaken your inner artist at the Hui No‘eau By Jen Russo

Y
ou don’t have to think of yourself as an artist to take art classes. Art can be therapeutic, the act of creating something can be fulfilling and there just may be an inner artist in you waiting to come out. Art stimulates the brain. Setting time aside for yourself in a class can really make a difference in slowing the daily grind, giving you the chance to explore something on your own time. I’ve discovered an appreciation and love of art classes in and of themselves by attending classes at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center. Not everything I create I love, but the ohana that comes together to create and the supporting environment at the classes is the perfect place to learn and find your niche. I jumped into a wide variety of classes and found that I enjoyed them all. In the printmaking studio I carved wood into colorful prints utilizing an ancient Japanese woodblock technique taught by Tania Arens. I also experienced an incredibly modern layering technique using resin with a workshop with visiting artist Sally French. In each class there were beginners and more experienced artists, but everyone had their own perspective so you don’t feel like you have to be a professional to be comfortable here. The center offers a wide variety of courses and workshops. Classes can really help you hone skills, they are offered in sessions over a period of weeks to get the basics down. Once you have that under your belt you can sign up for studio time. Then there are the workshops, the Hui offers so many it’ll blow your mind. There are visiting artist workshops, and ones given by the local teachers, too. Workshops last generally one to three days. They’re a great entry point to a particular style or type of art. The Hui has a ceramics studio, jewelry-
making studio, printmaking studio and glass blowing studio, and offers instruction in painting, photography, drawing, kapa making, ikebana, children’s courses as well as family Friday workshops and the keiki art camps for summer. There are tons of ways to immerse yourself in art on their property. Every Wednesday artist Stephen Fellerman demos glassblowing from 10am to 1pm. I took a workshop with him and built a beautiful blown glass ornament, and the Hui offers this workshop to visiting couples and wedding parties, too. Family Fridays features a once-a-month workshop that you can take and work alongside your keiki (it’s a pizza party, too). In the young adult section, the teens and tweens art academy offers so many ways for the young creative to get their hands dirty, like metalsmithing, jewelry making, ceramics, and printmaking. What to do with all the art you create? Turn to the list of upcoming shows on Maui and create something of course. So many artists feature the things they learn at the Hui, and you’re no exception. For inspiration, I visit the gallery and gift shop when I’m on property taking classes. The Gypsy Maui Food Truck has coffee, smoothies and food at the Hui to indulge in as well. To check upcoming classes and workshops, go to Huinoeau.com and click on Classes or go by the Hui and pick up the summer course schedule.

M
a team-building exercise, I opted to bring along a few of my coworkers from Roy’s restaurant in Ka‘anapali to join in the experience with me. We had employees who worked in all different aspects of the restaurant, including front- and back-ofhouse, which allowed for an eclectic mixture of personalities, wits and techniques. The first room we entered was the Prison Break. Our group was separated into two and placed into adjacent cells where we would have to work together, regardless of the wall hindering our ability to see each other. A television screen fixed above us started flashing a countdown and we frantically raced against the clock to escape in time. This was actually my favorite of the two rooms because as we uncovered the clues within our own cells, we realized that each team had pieces that the other one needed to use in order to break out. Once both teams released themselves from the cells, we then had to collaborate on figuring out how to escape the room entirely. I thoroughly enjoyed this room because each member of our party contributed to solving the puzzles in some way, and I believe everyone felt equally important throughout the process of escaping. Amanda was our “woman on the outside” who monitored our progress, gave us hints when we were stuck and made sure we didn’t hurt ourselves by tinkering with something that wasn’t actually part of the game. Although we never called her for help, she did put one small hint up on the screen for us during our first round. In the end, we escaped with 27 minutes left on the clock and we were all quite proud of our mutual accomplishment. Our next stop was the Bank Heist room, where we all remained in the same room together and had to figure out
because it serves a purpose, so utilize everything you find. As much as I would like to explain every last detail of the rooms, the most important aspect of this activity is the element of surprise. “A lot of it is what we call ah-ha moments, where a puzzle all of a sudden makes sense,” Mishkin said. “It’s a direct, problem-solving and sometimes high pressure situation, plus everyone has to work together. In the prison, it’s all about teamwork between the two cells and it almost doesn’t matter how smart you are for that one… if your communication skills are poor, you’re not escaping.” Although the puzzles were originally created with the mindset of bringing friends, families and coworkers together, the owners are seeing that many children are interested in participating as well. “The age is anywhere from nine to 99 years-old,” Amanda said. “We’ve had trigenerational families come in and play and they say, ‘There’s nothing else you can do where we can all go and everyone can have fun together.’” If you want to experience either the Prison Break or the Bank Heist rooms, you’ll have to act quickly. In late summer, Maui Escape Rooms is planning to move to Whalers Village, where they’ll open four brand new rooms. MAUI ESCAPE ROOMS

aui Escape Rooms in Lahaina is a new form of entertainment which requires players to complete creative challenges while doubling as a team building activity and a fun game for all ages. The concept of this company is all about the magic behind solving a mystery and teaching players that nothing is what it seems. Just within the lobby there are puzzles, padlocks and secret doors– there’s even a special, hidden image within the company’s logo (which I like to call the “Escape Ape”) that’s displayed above the front desk. Live escape games started in Asia during the early 2000s and then spread across the world. There are now approximately 1,210 escape room companies within the United States. Maui Escape Rooms is one of four in the entire state, with the other three being located on Oahu. This facility was opened in May 2016 by a team of two married couples–Mishkin and Amanda Derakhshan alongside Rabosh and Coby Samari–who believe their company will attract locals and tourists alike. “We’ve lamented ourselves how there’s really nothing to do on Maui at night, especially indoors if it’s raining or if you’re just sick of the sun… so we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if something like [an escape room] existed on Maui,’” Mishkin said. When I went, there were two rooms available for people to explore and solve– the Bank Heist for two to eight players and the Prison Break for four to 10 players. Both rooms have only a 25 percent success rate of groups who were able to escape within the one hour time slot that’s allotted. Reservations are typically required, but it never hurts to pop in and see if there are any openings. Since this activity is being marketed as
how to break into the bank manager’s safe. This room was a tad more challenging because it required some worldly knowledge and intermediate math skills, such as basic geometry and algebra–but thankfully, you’re given a calculator! They even personalize one of the clues for your group to truly make you feel immersed in the experience. The only negative was that this room felt a bit more hectic because everyone was trying to solve a different puzzle at once, leading to at least one person missing out each time someone made a discovery. Even though we had one more person in our group for this second room, we escaped with only 19 minutes to spare. Figuring out how to escape the cleverly designed rooms allowed me to realize my potential as a leader as well as a team player, my ability to use critical thinking and communication skills to solve problems during intense situations and my newfound obsession with live escape games. It was exhilarating to finally put all the time I’ve spent bingewatching mystery and crime TV shows to use–I felt like I had been transported into one of those fictional worlds where I got to be a hero alongside everyone else in my group. Regaining our freedom with time to spare granted us plenty of bragging rights back at the restaurant and even the employees who couldn’t join in on the fun know just how capable we are of working together towards a common goal. Overall, the Maui Escape Rooms were incredibly fun and entertaining. I would recommend doing the Prison Break if you have a larger group of five or more, whereas the Bank Heist may be better for a smaller group of four or less. One piece of advice I will share, without giving anything away, is to remember that everything is placed in each room

'Leave The Gun, Take The Cannolis' See a special 45th anniversary screening of ‘The Godfather’ ★★★★★ Rated R / 175 Min.
T
he opening moments of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather are like a dream coming into focus, as we’re pulled into another world and drawn in with rich, enticing storytelling. A man named Bonasera is addressing Don Vito Corleone (played by Marlon Brando), the elderly “Godfather” mob boss whose daughter, Connie (Talia Shire), is having an elaborate wedding just outside his darkened office. Bonasera tells Corleone a tragic story, asks for a diabolical favor and begins his plea by declaring, “I believe in America...” We witness this long monologue from Corleone’s perspective, which allows us to feel the power and sympathy he feels towards his guest. Coppola’s film casts a spell from this opening scene and never lets go. As the joyous wedding festivities carry on, we meet the rest of the Corleone family, all of whom are in the “family business” and take their orders from Vito. The lone exception: Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), the decorated WWII survivor who arrives with his lovely girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton). Michael informs Kay that he is aware of his family operations but doesn’t take part in their crimes. Gradually, as the story takes shocking turns, we realize that Michael’s introducing Kay to his welcoming family has doomed them both. Brando’s performance is among the most mimicked, analyzed and celebrated in all of cinema. Casting aside all of the baggage such an iconic turn brings, it’s easy to become lost in his work. Although he was only 47 years old when he played the grandfatherly but commanding Vito Corleone, his portrayal feels lived-in and spontaneous, not a parlor trick. Pacino and Keaton, appearing very young and beautiful, are the film’s tragic center, playing the innocent, idealistic young lovers who are pulled

into a moral vortex. Kay provides the audience surrogate, as we share her horror and fascination. James Caan, in his breakthrough role, is perfection as the terminally hot-headed Sonny and Robert Duvall is wonderful as the steelnerved Tom Hagan, the Corleone’s lawyer and surrogate son. Shire is sublime as the abused Connie and John Cazale’s sad Fredo continues to haunt me. The draw of The Godfather runs deeper than Mario Puzo’s expansive, devilishly pulpy narrative and the maximum entertainment value it creates. The thing about the Corleone family is that, despite how they’re a bunch of murdering criminals, we really like them. In fact, we grow to love them, even as their actions become increasingly extreme and indefensible. We lean forward and find ourselves both identifying and rooting for this assortment of colorful, volatile family members and recognize their emotions

and passionate family dynamics as our own. In a very real way, the Corleones are like every family. Movies allow us the safe distance to “root for the bad guy” and live vicariously through the villains but Coppola’s film takes it even further. We want the Corleones to succeed, to get away with everything and find salvation from the terrible destinies that await them. The Godfather is now 45 years old but hasn’t lost any of its power. It’s nearly three hours long but never stops moving. The violence is rough, even in 2017, as Coppola never glamorizes the mobster lifestyle or flinches from the lives that are taken. Gordon Willis’ cinematography, with its gold and brown and hues, makes the proceedings appear like a faded photograph or a distant memory. When the second act takes a sudden location change to Sicily, the imagery brightens and becomes a sprawling contrast to the intimate, gloomy setting of the Corleone home.
Among the numerous works that owe a debt to Coppola’s film include The Sopranos, Casino and Goodfellas (which makes the shared observation that no one steals money from the bride at a mafia wedding). Watching all of these movies back to back (and yes, the masterful, widely misunderstood and horribly under-appreciated The Godfather Part III is essential), you witness Michael’s journey from a shining war hero to a King Lear-like patriarch. Nearly every scene is legendary and there’s a quotable line seemingly every five minutes. “He made him an offer he couldn’t refuse” and “Luca Brazzi sleeps with the fishes” are the most famous. Yet, my favorite is this quirky retort after a mob hit: “Leave the gun, take the cannolis.”
There will be special 45th anniversary screenings of The Godfather on Sunday, June 4 and Wednesday, June 7 at the Maui Mall Megaplex at 2pm and 7pm. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
We sometimes regard being conscientious, generous, or altruistically good as the province of those better off than we are. Sure, if you’re already wealthy, you may have the luxury of quitting your job and devoting the rest of your life to some grand (but achievable) goal like ridding the world of malaria. (I sure wish more rich folk would do just that!) Still, there’s always something you can do. Why aren’t you doing it? Is it because you’re lazy (why many affluent people do virtually nothing to improve others’ lives)? Don’t waste another day (we can’t afford) waiting on richer folk. Get off your ass and do something worthwhile. If you can’t be bothered, pretend you’re rich and open your wallet and give generously to people who can. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
As much as you love being “in the know,” taking part in that inner circle of knowledge comes with a price. You have to take some responsibility for the decisions that were made in that context. Having information is a form of power, and with power comes responsibility. There are so many abuses of power in our country that I know you’d be loathe to add to the pile. Therefore, even if you’re operating on a much smaller scale, lead by example: exercise your power (even if it’s just the sharing of information) with compassion, thoughtfulness, and transparency.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
I’ve known a couple pathological liars in my life. They were consistently entertaining and compelling people. They’re largely successful not because they’re Oscar-worthy actors or genius storytellers, but simply because people meet them halfway. They choose to believe the lies they’re told, even quite outlandish and incredible ones. Sagittarians are notorious truth-tellers; this ironically makes you astonishingly susceptible to more deceitful sorts. You’re unwittingly collaborating in someone else’s’ constructed fantasy reality, and it might get you in (emotional) trouble. Better identify, then pop, that bubble now, before you’re too far off the ground.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Some women get surgery to “restore” their virginity. However, even though they may bleed as if it’s their first time, the next time they have sex, their previous experiences will always be with them. Similarly, you might be able to create an equally hard-to-penetrate illusion about yourself. Those women have their own reasons to hide the fact they’ve had sex. I doubt any of them start to believe that they’re really virgins again; you, however, have shown signs of starting to buy into your own smoke-and-mirrors act. Don’t do that. Whatever you make other people believe, once you start fooling yourself, you’re in deep trouble.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
What is royalty, noble Lion? Once, it was about which family you were born (or married) into. Now, it’s called celebrity, and it’s about beauty, or wealth, or a host of other things. The biggest different between old school royalty and the new school variety is that kings and queens once had a duty to their people; too few celebrities seem to feel the same way. (Can you imagine Paris Hilton doing anything truly for “the greater good?”) You are royalty, at least in your own circle. The question is, are you new school, in it for the ego-boost, or old school, a leader whose edicts and decisions benefit everyone? VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
If a plant isn’t getting enough nutrients, sunlight, or water, it often sacrifices parts of itself; select leaves wilt and fall off, so that the rest of the plant might survive (and even thrive in less than perfect conditions). I know you’re loathe to lose any pieces of yourself or aspects of your life, but I hope you’ll consider this strategy anyway. It’s either wither away entirely, or cast off some dead weight that’s not really helping you at the moment. It shouldn’t be that hard; If you choose correctly, you should feel lighter and stronger, so much so that you’ll go from struggling to soaring, virtually overnight.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
The most interesting aspects of your life should teeter between exciting and overwhelming. If they don’t at least briefly veer into those wild emotional territories, it means you’re not aiming high enough or pushing strongly enough to manifest your dreams. What in your life makes your heart pound, your hands clammy, and your hopes soar? If your answer is, “nothing,” then you’re screwing up. You’re wasting time. There has to be something out there that could simultaneously thrill and terrify you. If you haven’t found it yet, this week you ought to start looking in earnest. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Holding onto your rough edges can take courage and determination, especially for a Pisces. You Fish can find it terribly tempting to lie down and let life course over you like a swift river, until you’re as smooth and rounded as all the other river rocks. Losing your peculiar spiritual shape would be a shame, since you’re generally the most quirkily creative and idiosyncratic sign in the zodiac. We need the whimsical, impractical weirdness only you can bring to the table (only if you resist the pressure to conform). I understand the urge to go with the flow; I just hope you’re still willing to slice through it some of the time.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
I’m grossed out by perfume. This isn’t because of some body odor fetish, but simply an allergy to anything that smacks of being fake or artificial. I value realness above niceness or prettiness, so whenever I think someone is hiding behind a scent or some affected attitude, I usually walk away. I don’t expect you to change your values to conform to mine, I’m just explaining why someone you want to admire you won’t even notice you: they might want someone who’s more real than nice. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
When people first become lucid in their dreams (aware that they’re dreaming), they nearly always do one of two things: fly, or have sex. Advanced dreamers get more creative; they start with flying sex and move on from there to virtually limitless possibilities. Scorpios have tremendous potential to break from the norm and explore uncharted new territory, in dreams and life. When you choose to be, you’re the shamans of the modern age. Some of you, however, aren’t exactly doing your jobs. This week, get back to work. People need to know they have more than two choices; a lot of them need help figuring that out. Give them a hand, won’t you?
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Non sequiturs are the name of this week’s game. Your best strategy for moving forward, avoiding conflict, or triumphing in a fight of any kind, is simply to keep people guessing. That means stretching your creativity to its limits and surprising even yourself. When was the last time you did that, Aries? I want you to shock yourself to the roots of your hair with what you’re capable of. If you can do that, you’ll not only be living a very exciting and interesting life indeed, anyone who might get in your way will be so off-balance you could knock them over with a feather, or a word. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
When you can’t win, laugh. I can understand why you’re letting yourself get angry, frustrated, or upset, but I wish you wouldn’t. There’s simply nothing you can change about the situation–except your reaction to it. Since whatever’s bugging you is likely to continue, you have two choices: continue to allow it to screw with your well-being, or get over it. At the very least get to a place where it’ll roll off your back; if you can manage to find some way to genuinely laugh at the thing, we’ll all be much, much happier.
