COUNTY AUDITOR LOOKS AT PCARD USE
Here are six key stats we learned from the report: • Older women in Hawaii receive median annual Social Security benefits of $12,000, about 80 percent of the amount older men receive ($15,158) • Just 35.5 percent of older women receive income from a pension or retirement savings plan, compared with 47.0 percent of older men • For those with a pension or retirement savings plan, women’s median annual income is about 60 percent of men’s ($12,596 compared with $21,344) • Older women’s median annual asset income in Hawaii is about 75 percent of older men’s ($3,900 compared with $5,000) • Just over nine percent (9.1 percent) of older women in Hawaii live in poverty, compared with 5.8 percent of older men • The poverty rate of single older women in Hawaii is more than three times higher than the rate for married older women (13.0 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively; Institute for Women’s Policy Research 2016)

On June 14, the Maui County Auditor released a new report on the county’s use of procurement cards (so-called pCards)–a credit card that county officials can use to buy goods and services. The Auditor decided to take a look at Maui pCard use after a plethora of news reports made clear that former Hawaii Island Mayor Billy Kenoi was using his county pCard to patronize hostess bars, buy sports equipment and so forth (though Kenoi did indeed make all those purchases for his personal use, which are expressly forbidden, a jury in late 2016 found him not guilty on all charges the state brought against him on his pCard use). For their audit, county Auditor Lance Taguchi and his staff looked at a 13-month period, during which county employees and officials used 369 pCards to make a total of $4.38 million in purchases. “The Office of the County Auditor set out to determine if Maui County’s pCards were exposed to similar issues like those reported by local news agencies which claimed that Hawaii County pCards were used to pay for a tab at a hostess bar in Honolulu, an expensive bicycle, surfboard, and other personal use,” states the Auditor’s report. While the auditors found a number of issues in regards to how employees use their pCards (and also discovered that county Finance Director Danny Agsalog had used his pCard to pay for airline tickets to the Mainland for his family– though prohibited, Agsalog reimbursed the county and is still employed to this day), they ultimately found no pCard charges at hostess bars. “Of the nearly 25,000 separate transactions, we observed no instances of pCards being used at hostess bars,”
states the report. I know, I know, I was slightly disappointed, too. As it is, safeguards in the pCard system should already prohibit county employees from using the cards at bars or to buy alcohol, so the finding wasn’t surprising. But wait! The Auditor’s office did discover something else, something rather disturbing. “[T]esting revealed that some hostess bars are categorized as ‘restaurants,’ states the Auditor’s report. “This creates a loophole that would allow some pCards to be used at hostess or other types of bars. As such, we recommend that this loophole be addressed by finding alternative ways to pay for authorized meals.” As it was, Taguchi’s auditors found just a handful of restaurants in the pCard transactions–Zippy’s, Aloha Mixed Plate, Bale and Tiffany’s, according to Taguchi. County employees had made purchases to get food during fires or because a Liquor Commission meeting ran late and the commissioners needed lunch, Taguchi added (just to be clear, Taguchi said there was nothing inappropriate about any of these transactions).
But Taguchi also said that his team ran a little experiment. They chose four hostess bars at random, then simulating pCard transactions at them. The auditors determined that two of the bars were indeed classified as bars, and no transaction was possible. But they also found that two were (for whatever reason) considered to be restaurants, making pCard transactions possible. “Failure of the County to detect and block the purchase of explicitly prohibited items by pCard could result in the loss of public trust and increase the chance of fraud, waste, or abuse,” states the Auditor’s report. The report then recommended the County of Maui establish additional preventative measures to ensure that county pCards can’t be used at any hostess bar. For the most part, county officials agreed with the report’s findings. In his official response to the report (written on June 7), County of Maui Managing Director Keith Regan had this to say in regards to the report’s sixth finding, “The ability for certain pCards to be used at restaurants creates a loophole which could allow those cards to be used at bars (i.e. hostess bars)”: “Management appreciates the auditor’s observations and notes for clarity that the auditor’s recommendations did not arise from any specific instances of irregularities found in the performance of the audit. Management acknowledges that the recommendations are preventative controls that may be helpful in minimizing the potential risk for the misappropriation of funds.”
DISTURBING STATS ABOUT OLDER WOMEN IN HAWAII In a time of depressing news, here’s something else for you to ponder over: women aged 65 and older in Hawaii are more likely to live in poverty than men of the same age. So says a new report titled “The Economic Security of Older Women and Men in Hawai`i,” released today by the University of Hawaii (the paper is presented by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research).
Overheard “Look at the doggy! And it’s got a balloon!”
Dr. Colette Browne
“Many of the economic challenges that older women experience stem from inequities that women face earlier in life, including a persistent wage gap, the high cost of childcare and a shortage of affordable housing,” said Dr. Colette Browne, the Richard S. and T. Rose Takasaki Endowed Professor in Social Policy at the School of Social Work and author of the report’s recommendations in a June 14 UH press release. “This builds up over the course of a lifetime and limits women’s ability to lay the foundation for economic security in retirement, especially for the many older single women living without a spouse.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

HOW THE PALS PROGRAM HELPS ALL MAUI COUNTY KEIKI
Turtle tracks
It’s sea turtle nesting season on Maui and the US Fish & Wildlife Service is asking the public’s help in tracking the animals’ activities. Hawksbill and green sea turtles began their 2017 nesting season along Maui beaches in June. As endangered and threatened species, the success of their nests is crucial for the survival of these native honu. As sea turtles emerge onto beaches to lay their eggs, they leave distinctive three-foot wide tracks behind in the sand. USFWS, Department of Land & Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources (DLNR DAR) and the Hawaii Wildlife Fund (HWF) ask you to please immediately report any sightings of nesting turtles, fresh turtle tracks or nest hatchlings on beaches around the island. USFWS’s “Dawn Patrol” volunteers walk key beaches every morning from June 1 to September 30 to search for tracks that nesting turtles leave in the sand. USFWS, DLNR DAR and HWF work collectively and alongside volunteers to identify, mark and protect sea turtle nests; collect nesting data; and share their knowledge with beachgoers on how to help conserve sea turtles. The collaborative effort reminds us to respect the sea turtles by staying at least 30 feet away from a nesting turtle and watch quietly, as they’re easily disturbed. Please stay at least 15 feet away from a basking (resting, not nesting) green turtle and do not disturb it. Please do not pick up hatchlings and put them in the ocean; they need to crawl into the ocean on their own to set their navigational compass and increase their chance of survival. Also, remember to keep your dogs on a leash when walking on Maui beaches. And USFWS reminds us to not remove or tamper with the sea turtle

refrigerator box clubhouse, and a hideaway for kolohe kids.” A good deal of the book is lighthearted (as is much of Moniz’s writing, which includes Pukoko: A Hawaiian in the American Civil War, Under Maui Skies and Other Stories and Beyond the Reef: Stories of Maui in the World ), but not completely so. His account of visiting Kaho‘olawe with Hawaiian activists in the 1980s, though largely sentimental, suddenly becomes tense when Moniz and the rest attempt to return to Maui. Nor is his book confined to this county. Moniz traveled much during his life, and he has much tell of his journeys. He also uses the book to give context and backstory to some of his previously published plays and fiction, as well as his thoughts on literature, music and movies. “[T]his memoir is hardly about vanity,” Moniz writes in the introduction. “Instead, it’s my trip down memory lane as well as an accounting of the (good) deeds of my life, a loose chronology of my journey through this world. It may be of no interest to some, charm a few fascinated by subcultures, or perhaps cause a pocket of local readers to reminisce. Nevertheless, I offer a humble invitation to you to experience the life of one barefoot Maui boy between 1945 and the present.” Moniz is a crafty student of human nature, which makes his memoir a delightful, slightly mischievous look at Maui. -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

WAYNE MONIZ PUBLISHES NEW MEMOIR Wayne Moniz grew up on Maui before Hawaii was a state; before jet aircraft and posh resorts at Ka‘anapali and Wailea turned the island into an international tourist destination. Back then the island was rural, quiet and, for a kid, loads of fun. “Mango trees played a large part in my childhood years,” is how Moniz–an award winning playwright and author of novels and short stories–opens his new memoir Barefoot Boy in the Mango Tree. “Although hardly a native of Hawai`i, the trees have been around for as far back as I can remember. The trees and its branches were not only a source of its juicy fruits but also served as substitute swinging points for wannabe Tarzans, the probable place for a

DAVE WARREN (DD) Celebration of Life
News & Views
News Of The Weird THIS WEEK IN CRANKING
If you’ve driven through Lahaina, you’ve probably seen the van with the huge banner, “We are Not!!! In The Last Days.” Or on the side of the Honoapiilani Hwy., the rusted bike with the same bulletin. If you’ve lived on the west side long enough; you’ve probably even met the man behind this uplifting message. To many he was Dangerous Dave (DD), an infamous surfer in the 70’s and 80’s - part of the old school Honolua Bay crew. To others he was a spiritual leader and friend, and for a few of the island’s homeless, Dave Warren was a guardian who took them in when they needed it the most. DD passed away, due to stage-four liver cancer, in his home under his prized mango trees, with his friends and family surrounding him. Though DD had many friends, in his Ànal days he kept his disease mostly to himself, never one to push his own grief on others, he truly had the best interests of others in mind.
Memorial services will be held at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina, Saturday, June 24th, from 10am-1pm.
Jordan Haskins, 26, was sentenced to probation and sex counseling in May after pleading guilty to eight charges arising from two auto accidents in Saginaw, Michigan. Prosecutors said Haskins described “cranking,” in which he would remove a vehicle’s spark-plug wires to make it “run rough,” which supposedly improves his chances for a self-service happy ending. Haskins’s lawyer added, “(Cranking) is something I don’t think we understand as attorneys.”
and warned: “I got two clips! I’ll pop you.” She allowed him to finish up–more purposefully, obviously–and left without further incident. And Barbara Lowery, 24, was arrested for disorderly conduct in Cullman, Alabama, in May after police spotted her standing on a car, stomping out the windshield and smashing the sun roof. She said it was a boyfriend’s car, that she thought he was cheating on her, and that she had spent the previous night “thinking” about what to do, “pray[ing] about it and stuff.” (However, she said, “I did it anyway.”)
THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT!
THE DRONE ECONOMY
Le Plat Sal (The Dirty Plate) restaurant in the Marais district of Paris features specialties actually containing dirt–or as Chef Solange Gregoire calls it, “the mud of the earth that caresses our toes, the sand kissed by the sun, and rocks.” Mused a Food Network host in April, “What’s left? People are already eating snout-to-tail, leaves-to-roots....” Gregoire extolled her four-star dishes, including pastry crust a la Mont Lachat rock and a Boue Ragout stew simmered with silt from the River Seine. (NPR also noted that the founder of The Shake Shack was “quietly” planning a new American chain, Rock in Roll.)
EXPENSIVE ROCKS Goldman Sachs analyst Noah Poponak’s 98-page paper (leaked to Business Insider in April) touted the wealth obtainable by capturing the platinum reputed to be in asteroids. The costs to mine the stone (rockets, launch expenses, etc.) might have dropped recently to about $3 billion–a trifle next to the $50 billion worth of platinum Poponak said a single asteroid might contain. (On the other hand, experts point out, such abundance of platinum might crash the worldwide price.)
UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Yale University graduate students (well, at least eight of them), claiming “union” status, demonstrated in front of the Yale president’s home in April demanding better benefits (beyond the annual free tuition, $30,000 stipends and free health care). Some of the students characterized their action as an “indefinite fast” while others called it a “hunger strike.” However, a pamphlet associated with the unionizing made it clear that strikers could go eat any time they got hungry.
SMOOTH REACTIONS DD will forever be remembered in the hearts of Maui residents.

A Netherlands startup company announced in March its readiness to release drones capable of tracking freshly deposited dog poop (via an infrared glow from the pile) and, eventually, be guided (perhaps via GPS and artificial intelligence) to scoop up the deposits and carry them away.
POTENTIALLY UNEMPLOYED BEES Researcher-inventor Eijiro Miyako announced in the journal Chem in March that he had created a drone that pollinates flowers (though requiring human guidance until GPS and AI can be enabled). Miyako’s adhesive gel lightly brushes pollen grains, collecting just enough to touch down successfully onto another flower to pollinate it.
CYBORG SPORTS! Social critics and futurists suggest that the next great market for computerization (already underway) will be selling “human improvement” (alas, perhaps merely helping already successful people to even greater heights). Some sports teams are experimenting with “transcranial direct current stimulation” as a way to put athletes’ brains into constant alert, and KQED Radio reported in May that about a third of the San Francisco Giants players have donned weakcurrent headsets that cover the motor cortex at the top of the head. The team’s sports scientist (bonus name: Geoff Head!) said players performed slightly better on some drills after the stimulation. (One the other hand, at press time, the Giants were still next-to-last in the National League West.)
CLEARING THE CONSCIENCE In February, a 52-year-old man who, arrested for DUI and taken to a police station in Germany’s Lower Saxony state, wound up spontaneously confessing to a 1991 cold-case murder in Bonn. Police confirmed that, after reopening the files, they found details matching the man’s account, though the man himself was “not quite clear” why he had confessed. ■

‘Maui’s Movie’
2017 MAUI FILM FESTIVAL By Joel Moffett Through independent film we’re exposed to the world’s unheard voices and stories that the studio system tends to ignore. Comic book heroes and endless spin-offs are not the standard in independent cinema. Rather, modern independent films typically explore more character-driven stories born out of specific places and cultures, often embracing more experimental aesthetic techniques. Because of this natural emphasis on culture and place in independent films, Hawaii has experienced a great awakening in this arena over the last few years. Anyone from Hawaii knows that we are filled with fascinating untold stories that have yet to be told on the world stage. As a result, numerous film initiatives have been developed over the last few years to nourish local cinematic storytellers. Such programs as the Sundance Native Lab, the GVS Accelerator, and the Hawaii Filmmakers Collective all foster homegrown storytelling. In addition, the Academy for Creative Media (ACM) at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, has developed into one of the premiere film schools in the Pacific and regularly feeds our local industry with a new generation of independent voices. The core of the state’s support for independent film is evidenced by the numerous film festivals that have emerged to nourish local voices. Chief among these is the Maui Film Festival. Under the exemplary direction of Barry and Stella Rivers, the Maui Film Festival has developed into one of the most prestigious boutique festivals in the world, regularly premiering the most progressive and successful films on the festival circuit.
Raised on Maui and a graduate of Seabury Hall, Joel Moffett is an internationally recognized filmmaker and Associate Professor in the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. For more info, visit Joelmoffett.com.

Brian Kohne’s ‘Kuleana’ will premiere at the Maui Film Festival By Barry Wurst II • Photos By Jack Grace
W
hen I met up with filmmaker Brian Kohne for lunch in the conference room of Tasty Crust in Wailuku, he admitted it was his first time ever being in that room. “Kathy Collins and I come here for lunch to talk story, but I’ve never been in here,” he said. It filled me with pride to show him one of the few spots on Maui he’s never encountered. Since Kohne specializes in capturing and depicting Maui in ways moviegoers have never seen before, it’s fitting that the back room of his beloved diner offered a new experience. Back in 2011, audiences were in for a big surprise when Kohne unveiled Get a Job, his madcap comedy that was shotentirely-on-Maui with local talent. Kohne’s professional film debut (following comedy shorts he made while a student at Baldwin High School) has been adored and winning awards at film festivals worldwide. While Get a Job was a creative offshoot of the Barefoot Natives albums (featuring Willie K and Eric Gilliom) that Kohne produced, his latest film, Kuleana, is a drama. Over some crispy fried chicken and a Local Omelet, I spoke with Kohne about the making of his eagerly anticipated new film, which premieres at this year’s Maui Film Festival. The conversation also leaned towards the state of Hawaii-based independent films, what happens when you cast comedians in dramatic roles and his Maui upbringing.
Q: A:
Get a Job was a slapstick comedy. What inspired you to write something so different in tone?
Q: A:
You grew up on Maui during the time Kuleana takes place. How autobiographical is this story?
I actually started writing Kuleana first, 12 years ago, and it too began as a comedy with a far different title. When we were working with the Barefoot Natives and ultimately Get a Job, we poached many of the concepts from the early drafts (the character of Merton, for example). Five years ago, when I started back on the story, it too was very comedic, as Brothers Kuleana. Around draft five, it became apparent that the drama and mystery was what was working best– it evolved into Kuleana. It was frankly a very difficult growth exercise, having to learn and trust drama; I’d only ever done comedy since high school. But I’m happy I didn’t chicken out. I would love to shoot Get Another Job as a musical/comedy some day; hopefully while Willie, Eric and I still have our teeth.
When my family first moved to Maui in 1969, we lived in Ma‘alaea before the condos. Every day and night, we’d watch Kaho‘olawe get annihilated, and it made a deep impression on me. Not only was it violent
and sensational and yet so close, nobody seemed to really care. In MauiTime’s recent cover story on Elmer Cravalho (“The Giant,” Oct. 13, 2016), it was mentioned of the time a 500-pound bomb (that didn’t go off) was accidentally dropped on Maui. I remember that, too. My father was a young attorney on isle, and went to court on Oahu on behalf of Life Of The Land for Kaho‘olawe. The case was thrown out. Being here in the ‘70s and feeling the incredible regional music (C&K, Kalapana and many others) empowered us all to dream bigger. Of course, the loss of Kimo Mitchell and George Helm in 1977 created a greater sense of importance around the subject of Kaho‘olawe, and the urgency to protect and preserve the culture and the ‘aina. I visited the island on an access around 1983. That made a huge impression, and my family was involved in the PKO [Protect Kaho‘olawe Ohana]. So, even while away, it was always something I kept up on. My father’s death (at age 50) in 1989 was an incredible and painful experience. I was blessed to be with him down the stretch. I moved back to the mainland afterwards, determined to learn more, grow and someday return to make movies in Hawaii. So the story is autobiographical, in the sense that it conveys how I feel: my love and devotion for the islands, the culture, the indigenous people and perhaps also channels the pain, anger and hope I bear moving forward.
Q: A:
Has this been a harder film to make than Get a Job or was it easier with experience?
The second movie has been way harder in every conceivable way. Probably a result of setting the bar higher–there was certainly no reason to do what we’d already done successfully, so perhaps the reason the second is harder is because responsible filmmakers make it so. This time around, we had a great advantage as a team having worked together before, and I think I was far better prepared to work with actors. That’s perhaps the frustrating part about being an indie director. You’re very aware of your shortcomings, yet the only way to improve is to actually do it. Yet, it’s a challenge to get a project in production on a regular basis. If I knew it would take five years to complete the script and produce Kuleana, I likely would have chosen another project. Or another field, entirely. Like, as a sword swallower or lion tamer. You know, something easier.
Q: A:
That’s an interesting statement: that everything you have to say about Hawaii is in Kuleana.
Yeah, I think it’s true. That’s how I approached it as a write and throughout the production. I just want to get it all out there. If this is the last opportunity to tell a Hawaii story, I want it all to be there. I’ll move forward and hopefully have more to say but for now, its’ all there. This is it.
Q: A:
than any of the versions that anyone has seen. I don’t know what to expect.
Q:
When you’re done making a film, is it locked or do you consider a Director’s Cut or Special Edition? Not in this case. When it’s done, it’s done. On Get a Job, I went through a certain process where it was done and then I did film festivals for a year. Prior to taking it to cable, DVD and digital, I did have the opportunity to do a full re-edit. I was able to trim it down by several minutes and tighten it. The benefit of being on the film festival circuit was seeing the audience reactions.
A:
What are your plans with showing Kuleana and are you thinking about a third film?
It figures to be the kind of movie embraced by film festivals, so we envision a nice run. Optimally, we land domestic and international distribution and position to support the motion picture to market, however we can. As far as my next movie, assuming the world even wants to hear from me again, it’ll be another work that I’ve been writing for over 10 years. As much as I have committed to production in the islands, it’s frankly very difficult and, as a local producer, we really don’t have an advantage over the outsiders–except for the love and incredible support of the community, which is something we can’t put a price on. Ideally, Kuleana will be well-received, a wider audience for my particular style and voice is established and a few doors open. I can say with certainty the next is truly the best and most marketable story I’ve ever conjured, so perhaps things will get easier… and if things don’t go that way, and I don’t make another movie? I’m cool. Because Kuleana says everything I want to say about Hawaii, and that, to me, is of the greatest importance right now.
Q: A:
ences. It serves in two ways: somebody sees “Hawaii Cinema,” they already know what this product is. It’s gonna be cinema from Hawaii, cinema defined as the art and business of motion pictures. There was a commercial decision to create a brand that would serve the greater good. My vision is–aside from presenting Kuleana into the marketplace–I want it to introduce the brand so that Hawaii Cinema as a website, a Facebook page and Twitter feed, starts to become a place I can share film. Not just the movies I’m working others as well. For example, there’s two movies presently being shot on Oahu: one called Waikiki and Go For Broke, which is about the 442nd. Another indie was shot on the Big Island
Kuleana opens with the production logo of Hawaii Cinema. What does that mean to you? Hawaii Cinema is a brand and company I created that would be more friendly to outside audi-
Stefan Schaefer and Moronai Kanekoa relaxing between takes
last year, called Joe the Medicine Runner, by some Big Island friends, starring Matt Dillon. This is just an example of the brand I want to create with Hawaii Cinema. I want it to become a news source, if you will. In addition to serving our own motion pictures, it could be something audiences and others can turn to for information about other motion pictures.
Q: A:
Did you have filmmaking influences in mind when you made Kuleana?
I’m sure it was influenced by films I love. But... it was an amalgamation that led it organically where it wanted to be. I’m at ease with letting my art be what it wants to be. Once we go into production, it becomes 500 people and what they feel about it. Post-production, it goes through another transformation. Adi Ell-Ad, my editor, steps in and tells the story how he sees fit. The final result is a collaboration with Adi, as well as Willie K’s score, which causes the story to shift. It’s going to be as much a discovery for me as everyone who attends the Maui Film Festival screening. Fewer than 100 people have seen it in test screenings in various versions. The cast and crew hasn’t seen it. The final version is profoundly different
On Kuleana, the difference is we now have a sales agent that’s screening the movie to buyers at the Euro Marketplace at Cannes. We’ll find out in the next few weeks what the reaction is to the material internationally.
Q: A:
Do you allow improvisation on your sets?
In the case of Kuleana and Get a Job, it wasn’t practical. There wasn’t time. Twenty-one shooting days for Get a Job, which seemed really brutal, and then 15 for Kuleana, which was near-impossible. So, with improvisation, there’s just no time for it. We’re in a position where we hit what we’re after and move on. Time was our enemy. Improvisation represents a potential deviation from plot or storyline. You’re not going to have time to figure out how it affects other scenes, let alone react to them. The performers have the freedom to express, but as the writer, I strive to get the material so strong, the actors believe in the material. A line that is misspoken could have a direct impact on other scenes. I try to write at a level of precision, which some tell me is impractical at the low budget level. I see no other way. Get a Job
would have been even funnier if we had that luxury to relax and improvise. The only character in that movie that had a lot of latitude in that way was Augie T’s, because he was going to bring the mania of that character to life in a way I couldn’t. There’s a couple of lines that Eric, playing Merton, improvised and they happened to be my favorite lines in the movie. So... maybe improvisation is pathway to superior results.
Q: A:
In Kuleana, you cast Augie T and Mel Cabang, comedy legends, in dark, dramatic roles.
Q: A:
What are your thoughts on being invited to premiere Kuleana at the Maui Film Festival?
I worked with Augie before and we became friends over the years. I see him not as a stand-up comedian but as a human first and a very accomplished performer. Comedians have to hone truth. I see Augie as someone with an ability to deal with drama. I saw Willie K in the same light–they both have this depth of performance ability. I got to know Mel through this production and I saw him in the same light.
It’s an honor for all of us to be invited and have Kuleana screened on such a prestigious stage. The Maui Film Festival is unique in many ways. At the core, it’s the creation of Barry Rivers and a reflection on the types of work he screens. Looking at the MFF or First Light Film Festival, you’ll see he has a very refined taste in cinema. It was a validation for the work of our cast and crew that he likes the film and chose to honor it in one of his coveted premiere slots. As a Maui filmmaker who started making movies in Baldwin High School in 1980, it’s the culmination of a 37-year journey to get to this place. To unveil in this setting at this film festival at this time, with all of our stars and cast and crew in attendance, I can’t imagine a better scenario for our movie. This is our movie, it’s Maui’s movie, it’s Hawaii’s movie. I’m proud and grateful to be at the center of so many talented people who want to see this sort of art live here in the islands. Get a Job is about friendship, Kuleana is about family and the next one will be about faith... so it’s fair to say I’m obsessed with F-words. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

‘Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story’ Talking story with producer Dennis Aig By Samantha Campos • Photos Courtesy Dennis Aig I’d been very attuned to the whole caregiver part of that situation. My father died first, and then my sister became the caregiver to my mother because they were in New York and I was out here. So the fact that Jen–even though they’d ended their romantic relationship–had given so much of herself and her time to helping Eduardo, made it a very different kind of survival story. That’s why we wanted to make sure that Jen’s story was part of it, as well as Eduardo’s. Because in a lot of these stories, the caregiver or caregivers are very often forgotten or left out. And I think, at least from my own personal experience and from this one, it’s really the person and the caregiver or caregivers that are really important.
Q: A:
Dennis Aig
I
n 2011, chef Eduardo Garcia went hiking alone in the Montana wilderness. Happening upon a dead bear–and curious–he poked it with his knife and was immediately jolted with 2,400 volts of electricity from a nearby power line. He survived, and spent the following two months in ICU undergoing nearly two dozen surgeries, which included the amputation of his left hand and forearm. He also discovered he had stage 2 testicular cancer. Months prior, Garcia had sabotaged a relationship with his girlfriend, Jennifer Jane, although she later became a partner in Garcia’s culinary enterprises. The two had begun working on a cooking show they were trying to develop with director Phillip Baribeau, who’d filmed the trailer for it. Then the accident happened, a week before they were scheduled to meet with the Food Network. Jane flew from England to be by Garcia’s side, and as his signatory, she began filming his recovery as a way to document his progress and keep Garcia occupied. Meanwhile, Baribeau went on to film Unbranded (2015), a critically acclaimed documentary about wild mustangs, with producer Dennis Aig. When they were in the final stages of that, Baribeau and Aig began discussions with Garcia and Jane about turning Garcia’s experiences into a film. They folded most of the Unbranded production team into Charged, enabling them to release two feature documentaries in three years. I recently spoke with longtime filmmaker, producer and Montana State professor Dennis Aig about the inspired result–a tale of survival, redemption and “finding your best self so you can live life fully charged.”
Q: A:
What attracted you to this story?
I think it was the dynamism of Eduardo and his recovery. How someone can be that injured and lose an arm and be in such bad shape, and then make a recovery where he not only returns to a lot of what he did before, but also reaches out to other people to try to help them get through their problems. And I considered him a friend. Also, the relationship with Jen was very interesting. Both my parents died of cancer and
Are you surprised by how the audience is responding to this film?
When you do a film you get immersed in it. And we tested the film a lot with audiences. Basically we would get a group of different people from different age groups and different backgrounds, and we’d screen whatever cut we had at the time for them. What started to emerge is that different people were really relating their own stories to Ed and Jen’s, and also later when Ed’s father Manuel’s story was added to it, and that sort of encouraged us. People are engaging with the movie, and that’s really what you want them to do. We were part of DocFest [earlier this month] in San Francisco. The second screening, I noticed there was a man sitting in the audience with sunglasses on. I didn’t think much of it, you know, it’s San Francisco. But during the Q&A, he raised his hand and said that he was losing his sight, and that some-
one had seen the film at the earlier screening and thought it would be an inspiration to him, and that he should see it while he still could. I was very moved by that. Here’s someone who’s in a very difficult situation, his life will be very changed, and our film is being looked to for help. That’s the kind of thing that really encourages you to make these films. I know it’s affected other people–but if it only affected him then to me that film was worthwhile.
Q: A:
What role do documentaries play in today’s culture?
There’s a lot of discussion with documentaries about impact. If you want to change the world, I’m not sure making a documentary is exactly the way to do it–you know, if you want to change it in a major way. On the other hand, the reactions that we got first on Unbranded, and now we’re getting to this, shows that a lot of change happens sometimes one person at a time and one movie at a time. While it’s always good to have large ambitions, I think slightly smaller ones or more localized ones can work as well. Some documentaries try a little too hard to change the world. Sometimes you just have to change people. Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story screens at the Maui Film Festival at 10pm on Thursday, June 22, at the Celestial Cinema in Wailea. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

FRESH CATCH DAILY | OCEAN V I EW
Connecting to the Source Talking story with Kimi Werner of ‘Fishpeople’ By Samantha Campos • Photos Courtesy Maui Film Festival were featured in a six-episode National Geographic series Living Free , which she said is about “going around the world and meeting people who are living very close to the root of everything they need.” She’s also a sponsored athlete and works with a handful of companies that are truly doing something good for the planet and using their profits to help make positive change in the world. Most recently the champion spearfisher hosted a “Live Simply” retreat in Indonesia, which gathered a group of people with various levels of experience in the ocean. Some had a lot of anxiety towards the water, others were certified freedivers. Werner then walked them through some exercises and practices that she does to help prepare her mind
D
uring her TEDxMaui talk in 2014, champion freediver and spearfisher Kimi Werner explained her key to survival in the deep sea–and in life. “When you feel the need to speed up, slow down,” she said. Born and raised on Maui, Werner spoke of how the ocean provided food for her family, how she tagged along as a young girl when her father spearfished and, later, how she longed to be back in that underwater world “where I could fly.” Able to hold her breath for four minutes and 45 seconds, and swim to depths reaching 159 feet, Werner earned top titles in the U.S. National Spearfishing Championships off the murky coast of Rhode Island. An artist, teacher and chef, Werner is now a vocal proponent of marine conservation and sustainable hunting. She’s featured as one of six water lovers in the new documentary Fishpeople . The documentary is directed by Keith Malloy, one of three brothers whose contributions to professional surfing are world-renowned. A lifetime of wave-riding and global exploration led Malloy to eco-advocacy and his work with Patagonia, a large outdoor clothing company committed to environmental ethics. Presented by Patagonia, Fishpeople tells the stories of how the sea transforms the lives of those who live, play and work within it. Long before Malloy knew who Werner was, she said she was very influenced by him and his brothers. “It became clear that as much as they ripped and as much as they had built these professions in the surf industry,” said Werner, “their hearts and souls were so core and so much more in love with the ocean, with doing good to this world and being authentic to themselves.” Werner eventually joined Malloy and Jack Johnson on a sailing voyage to study oceanic micro plastics and
to get into the ocean, and offered tips on how to redirect fear into courage they didn’t know they had. And because it was a retreat, there were yoga classes and massages, too. “I’m not really a yogi at all,” Werner said. “That’s a place where I feel very vulnerable, very inadequate, and I tend to compare myself or feel like I don’t fit in. So it was really good to show them we’re all human, we all feel in and out of our comfort zones. Maybe for me, I feel really comfortable in the water, but being here trying to straighten my hamstring, I feel totally not capable. And yet I’m still here, I’m still going to try, I’m still going to give myself that love.” Werner guided the group from land to pool to ocean, spearfishing their dinner–then together, cleaning, scaling, gutting and filleting the fish, while talking about where food comes from and how today so much of that is censored from us. “People just want to sell you that rectangular piece of meat on styrofoam or plastic with no face, no bones, no nothing, separating the fact that this was a living, breathing animal, to the point where people just eat things and don’t make the connection of what had to happen to get that food to their plate,” she said. “Let’s look at the source of things–and of ourselves,” said Werner. “And let’s really go back and connect to that source because it’s only going to give us greater meaning in our everyday life.” Fishpeople screens at the Maui Film Festival at 11pm on Sunday, June 25 at the Celestial Cinema in Wailea. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment
learn what they could do to prevent that pollution. “We got to know each other a bit on that trip and our lives just started taking these parallel paths with a lot of the work that we did.” So last year when Malloy contacted her and said he was making this film, and that he wanted her to be a part of it, she said, “It was like hands down, yes, drop everything, my dreams are coming true, I get to create something with a Malloy!” Malloy then trekked to Hawaii, dove with Werner and her dive buddies, and met her family. “The part that he ended up focusing on was my relationship to the ocean and how it relates to my relationship with my father,” she said. The documentary’s opening sequence, Werner’s story takes place mostly off Oahu, the Big Island and Maui. Currently calling Oahu’s North Shore her home base, Werner’s travels

Hawaiian Noir The new Maui-made drama ‘Kuleana’ packs a serious punch ★★★★★ Not Rated / 95 Min.
B
rian Kohne’s eagerly awaited Kuleana is a film island audiences deserve but might not be expecting. The only quality this has in common with Get a Job, Kohne’s goofball, debut 2011 indie comedy is a wealth of cameo appearances by local Maui celebrities and personalities. Otherwise, everything in Kohne’s sophomore effort is far more polished and serious-minded. The film draws us in with two timelines, in which an unsolved murder, a missing child case and unthinkable family secrets come to light on Maui in 1958 and 1971. With its easy-going pace, lived-in characterizations, emphasis on domestic cruelties and layered, twisty storytelling, the movie this most reminded me of was Chinatown. Ambitious and more absorbing than most 2017 films, Kohne infuses magical realism, social commentary and Hawaiian history into a dense, busy, but coherent narrative. Not everything works but there’s enough dramatic pull and entertainment value for this to play far beyond theaters with an 808 area code. An original blend of Hawaii’s history, spirituality and culture. Kuleana introduces a unique new film genre: Hawaiian Noir. While the setting may be tropical paradise, it’s set against a shocking and densely plotted mystery that twists and turns like a Raymond Chandler thriller. When Rose Coyle (played by a haunting Kristina Anapau) walks into a detective office, brandishing a cigarette and beg-
ging the private investigator to take on her case, I knew I was seeing a fresh take on dime store crime stories The well assembled ensemble cast is full of noteworthy performances and a few acting discoveries. Playing the noble, wounded (in every sense of the word) Nohea is Moronai Kanekoa. His co-star is Sonya Balmores as Kim, a character whose journey takes on mythical proportions. Kanekoa and Balmores give deeply felt, highly charismatic performances that anchor the film. As Nohea’s Grandma, Marlene Sai is luminous, bringing life to a character that could have come across as a mere symbol. Vene Chun brings unexpected layers and steals many scenes as Uncle Bossy. A never-better Branscombe Richmond is ferocious as an unseemly, dangerous figure (listed in the end credits as The Moke). It’s initially jarring to see Mel Cabang play a vile criminal and just as surprising to realize how great he is in a rich character role. The same goes for Augie T’s colorful but no-nonsense turn as a seen-it-all detective. Cabang and Augie T are so persuasively cast against type, I kept forgetting I was watching two local comedy legends. Stefan Schaefer plays central villain Victor Coyle’s devilish nonchalance as recognizably banal evil and Steven Dascoulias is first rate playing that rarity of rarities: a sympathetic lawyer. Local audiences will note Kathy Collins’ spot-on vocal cameo, as well as former MauiTime writer Anuhea Yagi, more than holding the screen as a detective (good luck spotting Eric Gilliom’s cleverly placed appearance).
Be careful! In 50 years this will be a colectors item!
Willie K’s exciting, flavorful score, Adi Ell-ad’s crisp editing and Dan Hersey’s beautiful cinematography keep things exciting and add greatly to the feel of discovery that awaits nearly every scene (particularly the Kaho‘olawe-set sequences). Kohne has made some smart soundtrack choices, using the music in the same way he offers gorgeous scenery: as a contrast to the darkness taking place. There’s an especially striking use of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” as well as classics by The Skyliners and The Platters. The big climax goes by so quickly, I wanted to savor it more. Some of the supporting characters (particularly those played by Hoku Pavao and Tsune Watanabe) are intriguing enough that you wish Kohne would give them greater focus. The few scenes that offer light humor (notably a sequence involving an outrigger canoe) are unnecessary, though the tonal shifts are smoother than expected. Kuleana is about the corruption beneath the exterior, both in Hawaii and within each of us. Kohne aims to make us aware of
the forces in our lives that make us settle for moral compromise. In addition to the horrible abuse of Kaho‘olawe, Kohne’s film is a cautionary tale against turning a blind eye to social injustice. If it sounds like a heavyhanded movie, it surprisingly isn’t. There’s a moment where two local boys go diving into a resort swimming pool to collect a scattered fistful of coins, a visual that suggests the predicament of having to find work in a tourism-based economy. Another shot leans in on blood and wads of bills washing down a river. The meaning of the imagery won’t be lost on anyone, as Kohne allows the visuals to speak volumes, while the characters don’t sermonize or recite preachy exposition. Long but never dull or uneventful, Kuleana is a significant work of Hawaiimade independent cinema. It’s so rich with ideas and delicious stacks of character revelations, seeing it twice is essential. Kuleana screens at 8pm on Friday, June 23 at the Celestial Cinema in Wailea. For more information go to MauiFilmFestival. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Fear captures the imagination. It compels. It’s sensational and attention-grabbing. It’s also soul-numbing and incredibly restricting. How limited are you by fear? First, count all the influences on you that try to make you afraid. That might mean your well-meaning friend delivering a warning, or a 10-second spot for the evening news, or some fear-mongering political propaganda, or your intimidating boss, or a million other things. I think you’ll be surprised at how often you’re influenced and encouraged to feel afraid. Then consider this: only the tiniest fraction of all that shit is worth listening to and worth limiting yourself for, in the name of reasonable caution. Reject, utterly, the other 90 percent. Then do your best to excise it from your life. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Finally, you’re ready to get real concerning your relationships. For too long you’ve been letting your totally unrealistic (and beautiful) dream relationships get in the way of having real ones. It’s a tougher choice to make than it sounds, choosing between the gorgeous fantasy and clunkier, chunkier reality. But eventually you’ll realize it’s no choice at all–something (with its own beauty and satisfaction) is a whole lot better than nothing. You can still indulge in the dream, in the privacy of your own mind. But never let it come between you and the real thing, which is, ultimately, harder to live without. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Consider the wisdom of your body, the way it can absorb knowledge and make actions automatic. I’m talking about the way you can drive, or ride a bike, without thinking about it. I love how I can look at my computer screen and watch the words I’m thinking simply appear, because my fingers are so used to finding the keys. Too many of your screw-ups happen simply because you overthink them. You try too hard. Just relax, and trust to the work and practice you’ve already put in. You might find you already rock at whatever it is you’re trying to do. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Sum peepl advoekaet sum kiends of spelling reform, as a wae of elimnaeting redundint lettrs and to supoesdly enhants corrispondnts with the wae we speek English. As U can see heer, it’s serpriezingly reedibl, and yet sumthing about it leevs U coeld. Saem goes for the cuts and chaenjs U hav contemplaetid laetly. Lief wil go on without thoes missing peesis. It miet even be mor efishent (tho it’s aktoouly mor liekly to be similerly complikaetd bi ur eferts to simplifi it). The maen qestchun is: will it be betr? I think not. Leave the extra letters and pieces in, and make the best of things as they are. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Escape the oppression of noise. You need space to unfold, relax, expand. You’d be surprised at how noise prevents you from properly doing that. Nearby construction, lawn-mowing, neighbors’ stereos, dogs barking, traffic, and so on; these can all build up and make it so you can barely hear yourself think. You may believe you’ve developed a technique to screen most of that shit out, but it’s actually slowly wearing you down. Find some true peace and quiet this week, whether that means retreating deep into the country, or into a sensory-deprivation tank. You won’t know what you’ve been missing until you find some actual silence. Then you’ll wonder how you functioned happily without it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
If you’re going to travel, do it right. Being a weekend tourist’s simply not the Sagittarian way. Sure, it’s fun to see the sights and splash out on a nice meal, but you’re not really fulfilling your potential unless you get under the skin of a place, and that means staying there for weeks or months, at least, and learning at least a bit of the language. Not many people have that luxury, but I hope you find a way. Until you do, practice. Don’t flit along the surface of your life. Even when you encounter situations you find unpleasant, dig into them. Find out what’s behind, underneath, and inside them, what makes them tick. You might just find something surprising there that makes your life richer.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Capricorns have this reputation for practicality that you simply don’t deserve. Efficiency and effectiveness? Absolutely. But pragmatism? Not so much. Your tendency towards extremes is what makes you so successful, at times. It can also destroy your relationships and sometimes your happiness. Generating perfect equilibrium and walking the middle of the road is boring, I know. This week, though, I hope you’ll make an exception to that general rule, because only going halfway to the extreme you’re capable of would be just the right amount.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
You’ve done the nightmare relationship. The break-up is like waking up. “What was I even thinking?” you demand, and your friends, who tried to give you a reality check all along, can only shrug and wish you hadn’t ignored them back then. It doesn’t have to be wasted time, though–if you learn your lesson from it. Ignore what those experiences taught you, and you’ll just find yourself sleepwalking through another few months, years, or relationships while your friends roll their eyes and gradually lose patience and faith. Is that you, destined to be an old fool who can’t help reliving history, over and over? Or can you get wiser while you get older, too?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
The mid-20th century residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma created a time capsule for folks fifty years later, burying a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe under the County Courthouse lawn. Although it was swaddled in rust-resistant preservatives and placed inside a concrete sarcophagus, it was essentially a car-shaped pile of rust when they unearthed it a half a century later. Those 1957 folk probably pictured the future mayor proudly getting into that car, starting it up, and driving away, amidst cheering masses, but that didn’t quite work out. That happens to many of our intentions for our future selves. They don’t play out quite as we imagined. Keep making them anyway. Even if the car you bury now doesn’t start in a few decades, you’ll at least generate a pretty cool piece of conceptual art. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Everyone wants to be loved. Sometimes having such a strong personal viewpoint, you Rams can forget that other people are as insecure, scared, needy, or hurt as you are. Most of the time when they act badly towards you, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their own shit. Try to retain that perspective this week, and not take it personally when someone buries you under their baggage. You don’t have to carry it, but adding to it with your own will just make everyone (including you) more miserable. This week, do what you can to lighten others’ loads, without adding too much to your own. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

CLASSIC ROCK
Billions of bees have semi-mysteriously disappeared over the last decade or so. They simply never came back to their hives. No one can definitively prove why (though there are some compelling theories). Without bees, human survival is very unlikely, so losing those little pollinators is a frightening prospect. So much of life is dependent on their busy little lives. We need bees. Love the bees! In fact, take note of all the little things that make your life better, the things other people and creatures do for you, and give them all a little overdue love and appreciation this week–in hopes that they’ll keep doing it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
It’s an exciting time to be alive. We teeter on the verge of greatness and disaster. I believe we will, in our lifetimes, either get to some kind of significantly different chapter of human existence, or destroy ourselves. I also believe that we aren’t always aware of just how much of an impact we can have, as individuals, on the kind of future we create—in any case, it’s more than you think. Don’t believe yourself powerless, even if you’re not as powerful as you think you should be. Do everything you can, even if you think the effort meaningless; it’ll turn out to be more impactful than you think. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
