Let’s just get right to it: Maui County Liquor Control Director Glenn Mukai must go. He can resign if he must, but if not the Liquor Commission should remove him. In the year he’s had the job, he’s proven himself to be ignorant, condescending, excessively secretive, patronizing, cruel and astonishingly deaf to the concerns of the general public. He runs the department like a private 19th century men’s club, in which his opinion is the only one that matters. He is unquestionably drunk with power, and his continued presence in the halls of county government is an affront to the notion that we are governed by laws and the whims of power-mad men. Mukai’s latest insult, an all-out war on nonprofit organizations, is beyond contemptible. For reasons he’s never explained (he has long refused to comment to me, and speaks only through a deputy to The Maui News), Mukai has decided that the LC must make it all but impossible for nonprofit organizations to obtain one-day special permits to sell alcohol at fundraisers. Things are so bad that a new organization, the citizens group Committee for Responsible Liquor Control, and private citizen Madge Schaefer, has sued the LC in an attempt to get it to revert to some level of sanity in its operations (under Mukai’s directorship, the Maui County Liquor Commission voted earlier this year to allow for 24-hour liquor sales at markets and to remove the decades-old cap on hostess bars–two changes that baffled and infuriated huge segments of the county’s population). On June 22, Schaefer and the Committee announced that they would amend their pending lawsuit to include a new claim that the LC’s new requirements on nonprofits pose an excessive burden and are unjust. “Until recently, non-profit organizations could obtain a special license for one day
him with failure to comply with police officers and disorderly conduct (the cops’ original charges of resisting arrest, obstruction of a government and harassment were suddenly forgotten), but that was bogus. As the video Russo showed, Russo was complying with the officers’ demands when they arrested him, and in any case the U.S. Supreme Court long ago ruled that citizens have a right to photograph police officers in public. Nearly two years later, on July 9, 2014, Maui District Court Judge Kelsey Kawano threw the whole case out, ruling that that failure to comply charge was only for motor vehicle operators. In a just world that would have been the end of it. Hell, last year the Hawaii state Legislature even passed a law inspired by Russo’s arrest that reasserts the public’s right to photograph police officers in public. But the Maui County Prosecutor’s Office appealed the decision, saying the failure to comply charge was legit and Kawano’s ruling was wrong. On the last day of March of this year, the Intermediate Court of Appeals (ICA)

agreed, ruling that the Judge Kawano should not have thrown out the failure to comply with the officers charge (the disorderly conduct charge was okay to toss, though), and kicked the whole thing back to his court. In a move to finally end this madness, on June 22 Russo’s attorneys filed an Application for Writ of Certiorari to affirm the District Court’s dismissal order with the Hawaii Su-

preme Court. The 12-page filing asks two questions of the state Supreme Court: • “Did the Intermediate Court of Appeals gravely err by vacating the dismissal order when the record clearly established there was no probable cause to bring the charge of obedience to a police officer against Mr. Russo?” • “Did the ICA gravely err in failing to review and examine if the prosecution against Mr. Russo violated his constitutional right to record the police conducting a traffic stop before vacating and remanding the case to the lower court?” Put simply, the filing goes after the ICA ruling for both failing on the issue of probable cause in regards to the failure to comply charge and the basic constitutional grounds that Russo had a right to photograph the officers. It also eloquently shows why the case is so important. “Before the government infringes upon a person’s freedoms of speech and press, the government–not the in-

fundraising events where liquor would be served by completing a simple application,” said Schaefer in a news release sent out that day. “Under the policy change, now every member of the organization’s volunteer board of directors must provide a statement regarding lifetime employment history among other invasive information. The full legal name and social security number of all volunteers who will assist at the event must be provided two months before the event. The donation of liquor for the event is now prohibited. In short, volunteer non-profit organization’s boards are subjected to stricter background requirements than the owners of hostess bars.” None of this happened when Frank Silva ran the LC. But when The Maui News asked the LC why they suddenly changed course and started hammering nonprofits, LC Deputy Director Mark Honda said they’re only following state law. This remains the department’s view, even in the face of contrary evidence. Buried deep in a June 23 on the LC, were these two extraordinary paragraphs. They make clear that Mukai is running the LC completely on his own, in outrageous defiance of both state law and any consideration for the public at large: “Deputy Attorney General James Walther in an emailed response said that ‘county liquor commissions are authorized (but not required) to do a criminal history record check pursuant to 281-53.5, HRS,’” The Maui News reported. “Maui County liquor department Deputy Director Mark Honda said Director Glenn Mukai was not available Thursday for an interview. Honda reiterated the department’s position that the background checks for nonprofit groups have been required by state law for nearly a decade.” The lawsuit is a good step, but an even better step would be for the Liquor Commission to end their self-imposed role as a soulless rubber stamp and finally eject Mukai from the department.

dividual–must show constitutionality,” states the filing. “Police have come under increasing scrutiny with the technological advancement of cameras recording their operations in public. Police misconduct from the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles to the death of Eric Garner in New York City were brought to light when members of the public exercised their right to record law enforcement officers. When the ICA was called upon to establish definitive guidelines for courts, the police, and the local media, it abdicated its duty to determine the issue.” According to Ben Lowenthal, one of Russo’s attorneys (the other being Samuel MacRoberts), the State of Hawaii has 15 days to respond to his filing. After that, he’ll have another seven days to respond to that. Regardless of response, the Hawaii Supreme Court will have to decide whether to hear the case in 30-45 days. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

MAUI BREWING CO. EXPANDING DISTRIBUTION TO 23 STATES Maui Brewing Company is expanding distribution and will soon be available in 23 states. The local brewing company has partnered with Imperial Beverage in Michigan, Johnson Brothers of Wisconsin in Wisconsin and Artisan Beer Company in Minnesota to increase its national footprint beginning the month of June. MBC fans in these Midwest states will be able to purchase Maui’s flagship craft beers including Bikini Blonde Lager, Big Swell IPA, Coconut
Hiwa Porter and Pineapple Mana Wheat, as well as seasonal and limited releases as they are distributed to restaurants and retailers in both draft and cans, respectively. “Once we launched in the state of Illinois, we started to receive request after request from their neighbors to the north,” said Pete Scheider, National Sales Manager of Maui Brewing Company. “We’re excited to be able to offer 100 percent Hawaiian beer to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan through these distributors.” The announcement comes just as summer kicks off–a great season for MBC. The brew company will have two additional beers available for a limited time throughout the summer–while supplies last. Both will be available in all markets where MBC craft beer can be found. The often-requested Blood Orange Lorenzini Double India Pale Ale, originally released in 2015, hit markets on May 26 in four-pack cans and draft. Brewed with local fruit and blood orange juice, this beer has a heavy citrus and hop aroma and balanced flavor. It’s a deceptively drinkable Double IPA at 8.0 percent ABV and 85 IBUs. In late June, MBC will be releasing Mango Hefeweizen, a Bavarian-style wheat ale that is brewed with locally sourced mango, and targets 5.5 percent ABV and 13 IBU. The slight banana and clove aroma and tropical fruit flavors of mango are perfect for those sunny summer days at the lake or a picnic, according to MBC. It will be available in six-pack cans and draft. -Suzanne Kayian ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

CARE TO COMMENT ON HALEAKALA OVERCROWDING? Do you think there are too many people headed up to the summit of Haleakala to watch the sunrise? If so, officials at Haleakala National Park want to hear from you. That’s because they’re conducting a new Environmental Assessment (EA) “to address overcrowding and resource concerns” at the summit, according to a June 15 park news release. Here’s more detail on what park officials are looking for, and why:

A new culinary team is in place at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. The team of three highly experienced chefs includes Lyndon Honda as executive chef, Chris Lederer as executive sous chef and Mitchell Cooper as sous chef. The new culinary team will lead operations for the resort’s multiple dining establishments including Black Rock Kitchen, Cliff Dive Grill, Mai Tai Bar, Hank’s Haute Dogs, Teppan-yaki Dan and Black Rock Lounge. They also will lead operations of property catering functions and special events. Honda comes to the Sheraton with more than 25 years experience in the culinary industry. He has a global approach to food, taking inspiration from an array of cultures and cuisines including Pacific Rim and Hawaii Regional Cuisines, as well as Italian, French, Japanese, Mediterranean, Thai, Filipino and more. Honda has helped open some of Maui’s most successful restaurants, including Maui Brewing Company, and has worked with popular local establishments Aloha Mixed Plate, Pineapple Grill, Old Lahaina Luau and 100 Wines Maui, among others. Honda, who attended Culinary Institute of the Pacific Kapi‘olani, most recently provided private chef services and culinary consulting through his company Laulima Events and Catering in Maui. He also serves on the culinary advisory board for Maui Culinary Academy. Lederer is an Oahu native and has been cooking in high-end restaurants for more than 10 years. He is an advocate for utilizing locally sourced products whenever possible. With a thoughtful and imaginative approach to cuisine, Lederer has led a number of new culi-
nary offerings since joining the team at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa including the ‘Ohana Table at Black Rock Kitchen and the Culture & Culinary Series. He previously worked at Trump International Hotel Waikiki, where he served as sous chef. He has also worked at Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Ireland, Roy’s Waikiki and Roy’s Hawaii Kai. Cooper was most recently executive chef at Ami Ami Bar & Grill in Kihei. He has more than 25 years of professional experience, including positions as executive chef at 5 Palms Beach Restaurant in Kihei, executive chef at Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort in St. Thomas, and food and beverage manager and executive chef at Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor Hotel at Camden Yards. “Chefs Honda, Lederer and Cooper are extremely talented and share a passion for food and innovative styles,” said Tetsuji Yamazaki, general manager for Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. “With this new culinary direction, we hope to create fresh, fun and memorable experiences for guests of the hotel and kama‘aina visiting our dining establishments.”
“Sunrise viewing at the summit of Haleakala is a top visitor attraction on Maui,” stated the news release. “Predawn through sunrise is the busiest time of day, and there has been an ongoing, steady, and significant increase in sunrise visitation. In response to concerns about safety and resource damage from overcrowding at the summit during sunrise hours, emergency restrictions were enacted to address the problem. “A pilot reservation system for sunrise summit visitation was introduced in February of 2017 and has dramatically reduced crowding at the summit during sunrise hours,” the news release continued. “The reservation system currently in place will be evaluated in this environmental assessment, along with other potential solutions to the problems associated with overcrowding at the summit during sunrise hours.” The public comment period will run until Friday, July 21. You can submit your comments online at Parkplanning. nps.gov/sunrise.

TROUBLING AIRWAVES A country-and-western radio station in Benson, Arizona (near Tucson), owned by Paul Lotsof, has periodically run “public service announcements” about one of Lotsof’s pet peeves: the harsh sentences usually given to mere “collectors” of child pornography. Many, he believes, are non-dangerous, daydreaming hermits–but often imprisoned for long stretches. Thus, his PSAs publicize tips for avoiding the police, such as saving child porn only on an external computer drive (and hiding the drive securely). Despite recent community outrage (causing Lotsof to retire the announcements), he remains defiant that, since he personally avoids child porn, he is merely exercising a free-speech right.

The inexplicable ease with which foreign hackers attack U.S. computers and security systems is finally grabbing the attention of officials. In a March Washington Post report, a technology expert from Britain’s King’s College London told a reporter of his astonishment to realize that the “security chips” on Congressional staff members’ identification badges are fake: The badge “doesn’t actually have a proper chip,” he said. “It has a picture of a chip.” Apparently, he added, “It’s (there) only to prevent chip envy.”
AMERICAN JUSTICE Suzette Welton has been in prison in Alaska for 17 years based almost solely on now-debunked forensic evidence, but the state’s lack of a clemency process means she cannot challenge her life sentence unless she proves “complete” innocence. Evidence that the fire that killed her son was “arson” was based not on science but on widely believed (but wrong) folklore on how intentional fires burn differently than accidental ones. (The bogus arson “trademarks” are similar to those used to convict Texan Cameron Todd Willingham, who suffered an even worse fate than Welton’s: Willingham was executed for his “arson” in 2004.)

Reverence for the lineage of asparagus continues in epic yearly Anglican church festivities in Worcester, England, where in April celebrants obtained a special blessing for the vegetable by local priests as a costumed asparagus pranced through the street praising the stalks as representing “the generosity of God.” Critics (including clergy from other parishes) likened the parades to a Monty Python sketch, and “an infantile pantomime,” with one pleading plaintively, “Really, for (God’s) sake,” can’t the Church of England offer “more dignified” worship?
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Andrew Bogut, signed as a free agent by the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers in March and expected to be a key player in the team’s quest to defend its league championship, checked into his first game and played 58 seconds before crashing into a bench and breaking his leg. For that 58 seconds, the Cavs owe Bogut $383,000. And Jose Calderon signed as a free agent with the Golden State Warriors in March, but the NBAleading Warriors changed their mind (for unforeseen reasons) two hours after the deal and released Calderon. For his 119 minutes as a Warrior (6:06pm to 8:05pm), Calderon was paid $415,000.
POLICE REPORT In May, as Taunton, Massachusetts, police were about to arrest Amy Rebello-McCarthy, 39, for DUI after she left the road and crashed through several mailboxes (with the crash causing all of her tires to deflate), she, laughing, told officers there was one other thing: She had a bearded dragon in her bra (where it was riding while she drove). The lizard was turned over to animal control.
FINE POINTS OF THE LAW In a legislative battle waged since a 1979 state court decision, some North Carolinians tried once again this year to change a state law that explicitly states that once a person (almost always, of course, a “female”) has “consented” to an act of sexual intercourse, that consent cannot be withdrawn–even if the encounter turns violent. (The violence might be prosecuted as an “assault,” but never the more serious crime of “rape.”) Said state Sen. Jeff Jackson, whose bill to change the law failed in April to get a legislative hearing, “We’re the only state in the country where ‘no’ doesn’t mean ‘no.’”
SKILLS In May, the British tribunal dealing with student cheating rejected the appeal of a law student who was caught taking an in-class exam with her textbook open (permitted) but containing handwritten notes in the margins–not permitted, but written in invisible ink legible via the UV light on her pen. And on testing day in March for Romania’s 14- and 15-yearolds, administrators of the country’s popular DEX online dictionary, acting on suspicion, changed the definitions of two words likely to be improperly looked up by cheaters during the exam. “[H]undreds” of school searches for the words took place that morning, but administrators were still mulling an appropriate punishment for the cheaters (who were, of course, easily identified by their misapplication of the suspect words). ■

o the rudest lady on Maui, up at Twin Falls with her friend and their kids, you do not own Twin Falls! We were enjoying our day hitting all the falls, so we made our way up to the last one only to encounter you and your horrible attitude. I still can’t believe you actually said “we left you at the last fall, there’s another pool up above for you” along with that stank look on your face. Instead of letting you ruin our day we jumped on in anyway! We never even spoke to you at the previous falls, you just left when you saw us coming because you wanted a falls all to yourself, and if that’s the case maybe you should get to work and buy yourself some property. I’m glad the real locals don’t act like you or Maui would be a disgusting place to live. Unfortunately this is what you’re teaching your keiki. I only pray they don’t grow up to be like you. ■

Somewhere on the other side of the shop, a guy named Shane is cutting drone parts using a Shapeoco CNC router. Welcome to Thursday night at Maui Makers. For Ulibarri, who is both the Director of the Maui High Performance Computing Center and the President of Maui Makers, it’s all in a night’s work. In fact, the ukuleles she’s stringing are 3Dprinted, and are being prepared for her to take to a Make Faire on Oahu (think a big show-and-tell for tinkerers from around Hawaii). Though made of extruded plastic filament, the ukuleles sound remarkably similar to more traditionally manufactured instruments. There are more than a thousand “mak-
erspaces” throughout the world, and Maui Makers has operated in various locations on Maui for close to a decade now. After occupying spots in Puunene, Wailuku and Waihee, none of which were ideal, late last year they moved into a permanent location in a Waikapu light industrial park–the largest and most durable space they’ve yet occupied. Though they’re still getting settled in, the space is already equal parts wood shop, computer lab and mad scientists laboratory. That being said, Maui Makers are having a tough time. They need new members–50 to 60 to really get finances stabilized. But accomplishing that requires marketing, and that’s not really a talent for anyone at Maui Makers. Given all the tools, raw materials, components and junk stacked around the shop, the space was a disorienting place when I walked in at 6pm last Thursday. Just a couple people were there, including Menningen, the shop master. “What are you making?” I asked him soon after I arrived. “I’m making a process,” he said, before showing me a small card he was carrying. “I’m a sucker for cheap or free, and I got a shitload of these formica laminate chips.” They’re sample cards used to show customers wanting to redo their kitchen counters. “My friends at Habitat couldn’t figure what to do with them so they dumped them on me.” Menningen moved to Maui three years ago. Before that, he spent 41 years working in shops, including Sears Roebuck’s product testing lab. Many of the tools in the makerspace are his, on “permanent loan” to the group. His goal now with the laminate pieces is to come up with a way to use them as stock for business cards, but he’s having
trouble making it work. The cards lack a contrasting color that would allow engraving, so Menningen has to find out a way to coat them. After three previous attempts failed, he was trying to cover them with wax when I showed up (which ended up working, as it turned out). Put simply, the shop that makes it possible for Menningen to do all this is a playground for the imagination–which is pretty much the Maui Makers motto. “Imagine it, design it, make it real!” states the Maui Makers webpage. “We provide the tools and community to make your dreams come to life.” Personifying that philosophy is Jerry Isdale, a computer and aerospace engineer who helped found makers groups throughout Hawaii. “People will often ask us, ‘Could you make me X?’” Isdale told me at the Waikapu makerspace. “We have two answers for that. We can teach you how to make it yourself, or we can introduce you to some makers who might be willing to make it for a fee. We have enough equipment here to make almost anything. And not everyone can have a shop. Maybe the wife doesn’t want the bandsaw in the living room anymore.” The whole notion of “making”–which has really taken off over the last decade– is in many ways a reaction to America’s post-industrial, largely service-oriented society. In his book Shop Class as Soulcraft, Matthew B. Cooper wrote about what that economic reality can do to a nation’s collective psyche. “A decline in tool use would seem to betoken a shift in our relationship to our own stuff: more passive and more dependent,” Crawford wrote. “And indeed, there are fewer occasions for the kind of spiritedness that is called forth when we
trate on teaching people not only how today’s tech works, but how they can build it and maintain it themselves. “Colleges are very much into theory,” said Isdale. “I throw people into the deep end.” The result is that someone who signs up for a three-hour Maui Makers class in, say, coding, is typing away at a computer within minutes of arriving. Same with any of the other classes Maui Makers offers–and there are a ton of them: programming Arduinos (single-board microcontrollers that can be used to operate a huge array of projects and sensors), soldering, electronics, AutoCAD (computer aided design software), wood shop, crafting and 3D printing, to name a few. Isdale said they want to start classes in drones and in the general purpose computer language Python (while used to teach kids the basics of programming, it’s also used at the Maui High Performance Computing Center, and Isdale said they need more programmers). But at the same time, Maui Makers isn’t a top-down, lecturer/student organization. The beauty of a makerspace is that the more people you have contributing, the more everyone learns from just being in close proximity to each other. Having said, the Maui makerspace is still a work in progress. Though the shop has a section near the front door devoted to welding, no one has yet welded there (the equipment isn’t yet set up, Isdale told me). The space also has a “lounge” of sorts that isn’t quite as welcoming as it should be, a variety of obsolete computers, a sink (“someone gave us a sink,” Isdale said matter-of-factly) and a mass spectrometer (an instrument used to make precise measurements of mass) taken from the old Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar mill in Pu‘unene. That last item, though it sounds
really cool, poses a quandary for the group. “It didn’t come with instructions,” Ulibarri said. “And we talked with people who said that if you don’t hook it up right, it could blow up.” Though Maui Makers already have a large pool of talented members and volunteers, they need more–especially given their goal of eventually allowing members to use their facilities and tools 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We’re all volunteers,” Ulibarri said. “Most of us have full-time jobs. And there are only so many hours in a day.” “We have a few people with 24/7 access,” Isdale said. “It’s a balance. We’re looking at ways to make that a premium.”
Isdale said they also want to be able to license six-foot by six-foot areas within the Maui Makers shops to individual members–for a fee, members would be able to store their own tools and materials there (the shop already has lockers). For Ulibarri, the road ahead is clear, but they still have a lot of traveling to do. “We have a blueprint but we’re tinkering to meet the needs of the community,” she said.

take things in hand for ourselves, whether to fix them or to make them. What ordinary people once made, they buy; and what they once fixed for themselves, they replace entirely or hire an expert to repair, whose expert fix often involves replacing an entire system because some minute component has failed.” Groups like Maui Makers stand in opposition to those trends by teaching people how they can construct something (a robot, action figure, drone or even just method of producing flour from Kiawe) on their own. There are currently hundreds of them scattered around the U.S., but the Maui operation is one of the better known–a considerable accomplishment, given that Maui is both rural/low population density and urban/high cost of living. Before Maui Makers converted into a nonprofit organization in 2014, when it was a “negative profit corporation,” as Isdale likes to joke, he managed to secure a contract with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to get makerspaces involved in space activities–everything from habitats to telescopes to rocketry. Later, Isdale worked with NASA on involving makerspaces in their “Asteroid Grand Challenge,” which has the goal of cataloguing all known asteroid threats to the planet Earth. Then last year, Maui Makers President Ulibarri represented Hawaii when she traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of a big White House Makers Faire. “The Obama Administration was very supportive of makers,” Isdale said. That support began with Obama’s 2009 inaugural address (quoted at the top of this story) and continued throughout his eight years in office. But at its heart, Maui Makers concen-

eachside barbecues are what summer’s all about. Most places in the nation are just getting warmed up, but here on Maui–where the barbecue goes 24/7–there’s something special about summer and the grill. Grand Wailea seems to get this, because they’re creating a new food festival around American barbecue traditions. They’ve invited the nation’s best BBQ chefs to join their own culinary crew to share in Fire It Up, a grilled and smoked meat fest. Grand Wailea’s chefs will serve as the host team, with Executive Chef Ryan Urig at the helm. His team includes Executive Sous Chef Jorge Gonzalez, Executive Pastry Chef Christian Brassfield, Chef de Cuisine at Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a Mike Lofaro and Chef De Cuisine of Bistro Molokini Adam Rzeczkowski. Urig will prepare wild boar chili, Kualoa Ranch Oysters Rockefeller and Maui Beer Can Puna Chicken. Gonzales is all about Mexican street stand essentials: pork carnitas tacos, roasted corn and Maui fruit. Brassfield is sticking to the sweet stuff with adult s’mores, cobbler and cornbread. Rzeczkowski will channel South America with Argentinian rotisserie goat and fire roasted Molokai sweet potatoes. And Lofaro will make the passed pupus.
Then there are the cocktails by John Tiogo, the Grand Wailea’s Beverage Manager and resident mixologist. He’ll complement the cuisine with Bourbon, Tequila and wine, and the Grand Wailea’s exclusive brew, the signature Gose beer by Maui Brewing Co. The evening will also have live entertainment by Makana and other special guests. Word is Chef Hubert Keller from Las Vegas will also moonlight from his barbecue to DJ. There will also be interactive activities for the keiki. Each participating celebrity chef has a deep connection to barbecue. Their stories and style on the grill will make this summer beach party like no other... Chef Sam Jones Sam Jones Barbecue, Winterville, NC Jones has barbecue in the blood. He’s a third generation barbecuer from a family that has been recognized with the James Beard award for “America’s Classics.” The Jones family Skylight Inn in North Carolina has been open since 1947 and is renowned for its wood cooked eastern North Carolina style of barbecue and whole hog barbecue. Jones opened his own BBQ joint a year and a half ago to carry on the future of legendary North Carolina barbecue for a modern take on his traditional NC pitmaster upbringing.
Jones will be cooking a whole pig and making Caroline Pork Sliders. Chef Sheldon Simeon Tin Roof, Kahului Unlike the other celebrity chefs, Simeon doesn’t have to fly in. Most of us have followed his illustrious career–two seasons on Bravo’s Top Chef, James Beard nominations and several other culinary accolades. Simeon’s upbringing in Hilo, culinary education, internship at Disney and stints at Star Noodle, Migrant and more have
Texas farms like Heartbrand and 44 Farms. His philosophy and insight is valuing hard work and integrity while embracing growth and new experiences. He’ll make beef ribs and octopus. Continued on page 14

Food & Drink Continued from page 13 Chef Billy Durney Hometown Barbecue, NY Durney has been smoking meat since he was a kid at his grandparents’ cabin in rural Pennsylvania. His first calling was 20 years in the security and private protection field,
working with plenty of our nation’s most public figures. He says on his downtime from the high-stress, travel-heavy job he would sit in the backyard, drink bourbon, smoke cigars and cook meat in his little 18inch Weber bullet smoker. It was trial by fire when he picked up his Brooklyn restaurant in 2013; days later, the neighborhood was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. He took to his one working smoker at Hometown Barbecue and

cooked thousands of pounds of meat for the devastated and hungry residents. Durney will cook Korean ribs, Vietnamese chicken wings and Pastrami bacon. Chef Hubert Keller Fleur, Las Vegas Keller is a jack of all trades in the culinary world. From Alsace in France, where his family lived over his father’s Patisserie Keller, he knew he wanted to be in the business by age 16. From mentoring with some of the great-
claim. Fleur in Las Vegas offers French cuisine with an international flair on small plates at the Mandalay Bay. Taking notice of our American obsession with burgers, he opened the popular Burger Bar Restaurants in Las Vegas and San Francisco. But he’s also recognized for championing vegetarian cuisine and cooking with a healthy focus. He’ll make Truffle burgers and wowing the crowd with his DJ skills. Chef Justin Brunson Old Major, Denver Brunson is an inspiration in sustainable proteins and butchering. Raised in Iowa on a farm, his agricultural upbringing molded his passion for heritage-raised meats, sustainable seafood and local farm sourcing. After graduating from Scottsdale’s LeCour-
don Bleu in 2001, he did his internship at Michael’s at the Citadel with Chef Michael DiMaria. In 2004, he moved to Denver and to open Zengo with Richard Sandoval. By 2008, he was opening his own business, Masterpiece Delicatessen. From there he launched Denver Bacon Company and opened a second Masterpiece location. In 2013 he opened Old Major, his concept on farmhouse cuisine. Two years later his love of fried chicken inspired Red Rooster, a daytime pop-up in the bar of Old Major. Most recently he opened Masterpiece Kitchen, which offers a menu inspired by his other three restaurants, and Culture Meat and Cheese shop with meat and cheese boards and handcrafted sandwiches. Brunson will create a wood-grilled Colorado lamb with Harissa and cucumber Tzatziki. Fire It Up! will take place at the Grand Wailea’s Molokini Gardens on Saturday, July 8 from 5-9pm. Tickets are $150 per person. Guests can also purchase VIP tickets for $250 per person; they include 30-minute early entry, a dedicated VIP section and swag bags. Tickets for children ages 5-12 are $75, while children under five are allowed in free. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite at Fireitup.eventbrite.com. Meet The Intern! THIS WEEK WE TALK TO KAYDENCE-LEE N. OSWALD-KALAWE the temperatures are always above 85 degrees and the land is brown and barren with dry gusts of wind on occasion. However, I call it home all the same. This desert of mine harbors many memories and experiences that aren’t found anywhere else. Not on another neighborhood, not on another district and not on another island. Driving through it, seeing back streets and weathered houses, each recorded in my mind with a specific person, memory and feeling, I can say with great ease that I’m collected most within these elements. It has raised me from age six, and will carry me through the last years of my high school life. That’s what’s best about where I live. MT: What are your extracurricular activities? PHOTO BY DARRIS HURST
A
s part of an occasional series, we’d like to introduce some of the interns who provide so much support in getting MauiTime published. This week, I spoke with Kaydence-Lee N. Oswald-Kalawe. MAUITIME: Where do you go to school?
KAYDENCE-LEE N. OSWALD-KALAWE: Molokai High School. I’m a junior. MT: Where do you live? K-OK: I live in Ranch Camp, Kaunakakai, Molokai in the state of Hawaii. Any Molokaian can detail to a non that where I live has little to no appeal. Which I suppose is correct regarding the fact that
K-OK: I do a lot of sports, to say the least. I started off with surfing and baseball. Gradually it moved up to club paddling, wind surfing, kite boarding (only twice but still accountably noted), club swimming, golfing (every other Sunday for a few months), stand-up paddling, and a little tennis and club basketball here and there. As I entered junior high school I got into club volleyball, even
becoming an All Star despite only doing two years of it. I moved up to high school and am currently on the varsity teams for both girls paddling and softball, also this past season becoming an All Star first basemen for softball in all of Maui County. Another extracurricular activity I’m in is the week -ong Jr. Lifeguarding program. This year marks as my sixth and final year with the program, and hopefully come next year I will be taking the official lifeguarding course for a professional certification. MT: What has been a highlight for you being on Maui? K-OK: The highlight for being on Maui for me is seeing the clear contrasts between Maui and Molokai. The streets, the people, the lifestyles, the agriculture and structures all sing different tunes. Back at home the pace is slow and it can be a bit unruly, especially when it comes to cross walks; While in Maui the pace is considerably faster and much more firm on the use of crosswalks. jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Bad Rap ‘All Eyez on Me’ doesn’t do Tupac Shakur justice ★★★★★ Rated R / 140 Min.
I
’ve been waiting years for a definitive Tupac Shakur movie. After watching All Eyez on Me, it’s clear I’ll have to keep waiting. Shakur, my pick for the greatest rap artist who ever lived, died at 25. His cadence was fierce and aggressive, while his lyrics were hard hitting but often playful and clever (“And even as a crack fiend, Mama, you always was a Black Queen, Mama”). He was incarcerated, survived being shot four times and is the son of a former Black Panther. He made a handful of movies and, curiously, released nearly a dozen albums after he died (a reason why so many believe he’s still alive). He remains controversial, for the lyrics in his music as well as sexual assault charges and accusations of misogyny. He was truly the Jim Morrison of rap, as his self destructive tendencies overshadowed the brutal poetry he created. Shakur is a great subject for a film. Unfortunately, Benny Boom, the director of Next Day Air, is not up to the task. Shakur’s brief life is covered in what feels like a 140-minute montage, starting from his troubled childhood to his mentorship with Suge Knight. This isn’t another Straight Outta
Compton. At its worst, this inches towards the awful miscalculation of Wired, the infamous John Belushi film bio. All Eyez On Me isn’t just disappointing in what it leaves out but sloppy in its narrative structure. The first 20 minutes rush through so many incidents and blocks of years, it’s possible you’d be 10 years behind if you took a bathroom break. The political aspect of Shakur’s life feels cartoonish, due to how Danai Gurira overplays Afeni Shakur and the limited way the Black Panthers are depicted. Demetrius Shipp Jr.’s performance as Shakur poses a real problem. Only in profile does he resemble the rapper and his acting runs hot and cold. The scenes where he recreates moments from “Juice” and “Above the Rim” only demonstrate how dynamic the real Shakur was in comparison. When footage of the real Shakur pops up in the final moments, it erases Shipp Jr.’s performance from the mind entirely. No one else steps up to carry the movie, which badly needed an anchor. Kat Graham, star of The Vampire Diaries, boldly plays Jada Pinkett, who was noted to have deep relationship with Shakur. The three scenes that feature Graham playing Pinkett (and quite well) are too truncated and barely explore the intriguing layers of their platonic friendship. Chris Clarke does a great impression of
Hey, at least I'm not played by a hologram
Shock G, the lead of Digital Underground (and yes, “The Humpty Dance” gets a big production number). Although Jarrett Ellis looks nothing like Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Lion, or “The D-O-Double-G” or whatever he goes by these days) but his vocal impersonation is uncanny. The real coup was getting Jamal Woolard, star of the very-good Notorious, to once again play Biggie Smalls.Yet, this winds up a bust, as Woolard is given much less to work with this time. All Eyez One Me tends to leap over key incidents, avoid character development and mostly sanitize Shakur and Knight. Boom’s film brings up crucial aspects of Shakur’s persona (his contradictory behavior, dedication to his mother and troubled relationships with women) then moves on to yet another under-developed scene. It lingers on odd ‘90s trivia, like Dan Quayle’s misspelling of the word “potato” and
how Shakur lost the lead of Higher Learning. There’s no mention of Poetic Justice or Gang Related, Shakur’s two best performances, though there is a vague reference to his acclaimed work in Gridlock’d. The third act, where Shakur emerges from prison, works the best. Shakur’s success under Knight has intriguing bits but mostly feels like a promo for the music and image of Death Row Records. Shakur’s longtime fans don’t need this movie. We already have Tupac Resurrection, which had the effective novelty of Shakur “narrating” his film posthumously. Anyone who goes to see All Eyez One Me to learn why 2Pac was so special should look no further than the music video for “Holla If Ya Hear Me.” The energy of that video, with its angry imagery accompanying Shakur’s thrilling cadence, is still exhilarating. ■

Georgianna’s favorite past time was to go for a cruise in her car. Just get in the car jam out to some tunes, and stop by her friends homes just to talk story. She believed that music and dancing heals the soul and that it will get you out of the funk you’re in. Her favorite quotes were “let’s give them something to talk about” and “this too shall pass.” Georgianna was sharp and had a silver tongue. She always said what she wanted, spoke her mind and did what she did best and that was laughing. Her laugh was infectious.

Horoscope
Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Don’t be impatient. You actually have the answers to most of your questions already. Three seconds of reflection would make you realize it. While I admire your willingness to simply ask others–a skill many other signs utterly lack–it’s often unnecessary. Sometimes you ask the question to whoever’s nearby before you ask it of yourself, and realize you already knew the answer (or could have easily figured it out) if you’d just bothered to try before opening your mouth. I’m being nitpicky, I know. But sometimes nitpicky stuff like that means the difference between getting the job, the date, the adoring spotlight, or not.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Stop thinking of your body as a machine that needs to be maintained and fed. It’s time to consider it, instead, as simply a source of pleasure, whatever its shape, limitations, or imperfections. Many Caps regard their corporeal forms as simply vehicles to carry their brains around in, and do their absolute best to ignore their bodies, ignoring or denying the pleasures of a hedonistic meal, a good shit, a fantastic shag, a massage, or a million other things. Is your body inconvenient and annoying? That’s screwed up. Find a way to regard it as a pleasure-manufacturer, and let it be just that.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
It’s so great how you already know everything, Leo. It makes my job a lot easier. How do you live with being so perfect? Oh, you’re not perfect? Because sometimes you come off as if you think you are. Sure, you’ve got some tricks up your sleeve. You’ve been around the block a few times. But when it comes right down to it, you are, like every other human on the planet, pretty much clueless about everything. Inject some humility into your routine. Remember that you have tons left to learn, and will never get it all. Then, and only then, will you even get some. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
If you were here last week, I would have sat on you, and forced you to enjoy some sunshine and beautiful weather. Of course, you wouldn’t have been able to relax and enjoy it, because of some incredible panic and frenzy about your neglected To-Do list. Has anyone tried to sit on you lately, and make you be lazy? I hope so, even though I doubt they were successful. Still, this would be a good week to chill out. Do it the Virgo way, if you have to (which you probably do), and get the most important shit out of the way, so when you ignore the rest, you don’t freak out. Then, really ignore the rest and, naturally, don’t freak out.
There’s a difference between confidence and ego. You don’t need to be the best at anything, or push harder than everyone else. Go for that, if that’s your thing, but I would suggest a more modest, achievable, and satisfying goal: simply being well and truly comfortable in your own skin, your own life. Ambition is all well and good, and I hope you don’t give it up. All I’m suggesting is that in the meantime, you also be happy with who and what you are. Being sweetly comfy in your own skin isn’t perhaps your ultimate goal in your life–but if your dream doesn’t at least include this vital step, you’re missing something important. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
People practice stuff in their dreams all the time, and then show amazing, measurable improvement the very next time they try it. Studies have found that virtually the same neural pathways are exercised in the brain when you dream about doing something as when you actually do it. It’s true, you can only get so far by thinking (or dreaming) about something; eventually you just have to actually do it. However, you can get a lot further than you imagine. Perhaps a bit of mental practice (awake or asleep) is what you need to succeed.
VOTED BEST
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Libras are sponges. You soak up whatever’s around you, good or bad, and incorporate much of it into who you are. Sometimes you need a good squeeze, to lose some of your crap, stuff you absorbed ages ago and have never gotten rid of. You also need to surround yourself with high-quality people. I hope you’ve already done that, at least, and if you haven’t– what the hell have you been doing? Find yourself some keepers, pronto. Then, get those good people to give you the squeeze you need to get rid of the old bad, and make room for the new good. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
We are, in general, getting smarter as we get older. For example, people usually score higher and higher on IQ tests as they age. Of course, that makes sense. Using your brain is practicing thinking, which means you’ll get better at it. The main problem here is atrophy. There are parts of yourself you haven’t used in ages. You’re way out of practice, whether it’s your tennis backhand or your heart you’re trying to use. You might be too daunted to get them back into play. I understand your trepidation, but it’s time to get over that. Oil up those squeaky, rusted joints, and give it a go. You’ll be amazed at how quickly all those half-forgotten skills come back. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Some people feel paralyzed because they feel disempowered, like they can’t do anything. They imagine they have no choices. That’s usually not you, Sag. If anything, you’re paralyzed by too many options. When you can make virtually anything happen, go anywhere, and do whatever you like, choosing just what you’re going to do can be a trial. Some Sags are so befuddled that they end up not doing anything. I hope that’s not you, squandering so much brilliant potential. If you really and truly don’t know what to do with yourself, I bet you know someone who’ll give you an earful on the subject. If your internal guiding voice is unclear, why not try listening to them?
If all you need are willpower and determination, you’re golden. However, if a situation requires more from you–tact, say, or long-term discipline–you might be screwed, as they’re hardly your natural strengths. You can develop them, however, until you can deliver a backhanded compliment as well as any Capricorn, or put your nose to the grindstone with the humble fortitude of a Virgo, or listen as sensitively as a Cancer. There are a few skills you could stand to improve on. You know what they are, and you know pure desire and drive aren’t suitable substitutions. This week, work on the pieces you’re missing.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Just take a chance. Sometimes people are open to you, but lack the confidence or the motivation to stick their necks out and take a risk making the first move. It might not be fair that you always have to be the one who risks appearing the fool, but right now that’s just the way it is, if you want anything exciting or interesting to happen. Of course, you always have the option of the same old nothing you’ve settled for so far; simply do nothing. Don’t risk rejection or embarrassment. That’s certainly easier. It’s also incredibly dull. I believe you’re more fascinating than that. Prove me right.
AUTHORIZED DEALER
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Forgive and forget. Holding a grudge, no matter how justified, is like wearing a fifty-pound weight around your neck. It requires so much energy and represents such a burden that you might as well just give up doing anything fun, dynamic, or brilliant until the score is settled. Geminis are supposed to be footloose and fancy-free. It’s part of your charm. That means getting over and moving on from your setbacks as swiftly as possible, and remembering how to delight in life again, good and bad. This week, shed the fifty-pound weight (and any others) you might be carrying, and get over whatever they are, already. It’s time to fly again. It’s already been too long.
