Project might be able to coordinate and encourage installation during construction excavation.” P.U.M.A also sees the new facility as a way to “help advance the brand and awareness of Wailuku Town as an arts & culture destination,” though it also notes that the current Arts & Cultural Plan for Wailuku is currently “on hold due to funding availability.” Clearly, this is a big project, and many of the concerns highlighted in the P.U.M.A memo (not even including the one mentioned at the top of this piece) are plenty scary. They include the following: • “Interim parking and impacts on retailers and restaurants during the construction. The risk that by the time it is built it will have pushed out surrounding tenants, and that you end up with a parking structure with nothing around it;” • “Ensure local restaurants and retailers can

MRA TO DISCUSS PROPOSED WAILUKU PARKING & EVENTS FACILITY “Does a parking structure fit a live/work vision for the future without cars?” These 14 words appear about half-way through an Apr. 21, 2017 memo from the consulting firm P.U.M.A. to Maui County planner Erin Wade and various other consultants concerning the proposed Wailuku Parking & Events Facility. The Maui Redevelopment Agency (MRA) will be discussing “the first version of the preferred design” (after a presentation by project consultants Ferraro Choi and PBR Hawaii) at its upcoming July 28 meeting, so in preparation I went back through some of the available public records on the project. The above question appears in a section of the P.U.M.A. memo that details the project’s potential influences on the Wailuku business climate.

For over a decade now, Robert Wintner has tried to get the State of Hawaii to clamp down on the aquarium fishing trade. A dedicated conservationist, he's also the owner of Snorkel Bob's, a snorkel gear rental company with shops all around Hawaii and a vested interest in helping people see healthy, vibrant marine ecosystems. For the first half of this year, it looked like Wintner might finally get his way. Senate Bill 1240, a compromise measure that would have phased out new aquarium collecting permits in the state, passed both the Hawaii House of Representatives and the Senate. On June 29, Wintner wrote an op-ed for Honolulu Civil Beat calling on Governor David Ige to sign the bill. "We implore Gov. David Ige to sign Senate Bill 1240 to keep Hawaii’s native and endemic wildlife on Hawaii reefs instead of shipping it out to tanks across the United States, Europe and Asia," Wintner wrote. "China is the fastest-growing market for Hawaii reef wildlife. Ending aquarium permit issuance will not guarantee survival for Hawaii reefs. Our reefs face many challenges, but the governor can eliminate one serious, entirely unnecessary and immoral threat." But on July 11, apparently acting on the strong recommendation from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Ige vetoed the bill. This wasn't actually a surprise, considering that the DLNR has long opposed measures to constrict the aquarium collecting trade and Suzanne Case, chairperson of the state Board of Land and Natural Resources, testified before various legislative committees that reef fish like the yellow tang have actually been thriving over the past decade. Outraged, Wintner decided to strike back by forming a new political action committee (PAC). Called REEFPAC, it's based in Kihei, according to the organizational report released by the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission on July 20. The organizational report lists former Hawaii Rep. Jessica Wooley as deputy chairperson. "REEFPAC is a Hawaii non-candidate Super PAC dedicated to replacing corruption and weakness in the reef state," Wintner told me.

While a Super PAC cannot contribute money to political parties or candidates, it can spend money on political issues and raise unlimited sums of money from individuals, corporations, etc. Given Wintner's outspoken advocacy for marine conservation (and against the aquarium trade), REEFPAC will definitely be something to watch as we get closer to next year's legislative session.

It’s almost an afterthought, appearing at the end of a list of eight “Concerns & Considerations,” yet in a time of innovations in driverless cars and car sharing companies like Zipcar, it sticks out like it was written in neon pink. The proposal to replace the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot with a large parking structure has been around so long it risks carrying over into a time when many people simply stop driving their own cars when traveling. Then again, what the county is proposing goes far beyond a mere parking garage. The P.U.M.A. memo “suggests” the facility may include an “indoor multi-function, dividable civic room” with an occupancy of 120-150 people and a “programmable outdoor space of about 15,000 to 25,000 square feet with a state, seating, and interactive play features that links physically and visually to the existing activity center at Market Street/ Kipuka Square.” More than simply building a new parking and events facility, the P.U.M.A memo makes all sorts of suggestions that radically change the makeup of Wailuku Town itself:

Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot

continue to afford to be in Wailuku and are not priced out;” • “Massing that overwhelms the character of Wailuku Town;” • “What will happen to the Banyan Tree. Can it be retained?” These are existential questions for Wailuku Town, and for the project itself. If we’re going to tear apart the heart of the town, we better be damn sure the ultimate project is going to make the town better. And though everything is still in the preliminary stages, the MRA clearly has a lot of work ahead of them on the proposed Wailuku Parking & Events Facility.

The Maui Redevelopment Agency will meet at 1pm on Friday, July 28 in the Planning Department Conference Room on the first floor of the Kalana Pakui Building (250 S. High St., Wailuku). ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

NA HUA HO‘OHULI I KA PONO LOOKING FOR INTERN APPLICANTS Applications are being accepted for a college internship program designed to help develop Maui’s next generation of conservation leaders. The Na Hua Ho'ohuli i ka Pono program is funded by Hauoli Mau Loa Foundation, a pri-

vate Honolulu-based grant making organization. The program works in partnership with Maui-based conservation agencies and Kupu, an established non-profit organization that works statewide to link youth with conservation organizations year-round. The Maui Invasive Species Committee, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project will serve as host agencies for the Year Round 2017-2018 Program; one position is available with each agency for college-aged students who are interested in careers in natural resources management and protection, and invasive species management. Applicants will be selected through a competitive process that includes a formal application, criminal history check, and interview. Interns will earn a bi-weekly living allowance of $475 and are eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award that may be applied toward higher education costs or student loans. Interested candidates must be available for 19 hours a week from Oct. 2, 2017 through May 11, 2018. Work days are generally Monday through Friday, but may include some night and weekend hours depending on the agency’s needs. Students are responsible for their own transportation and housing accommodations. Completed

NATURE CONSERVANCY’S LEAF STUDENTS LEARNING ABOUT MAUI

Great office!

Two teams of interns from the Los Angeles area are working with the Conservancy and its partners on Maui and the Big Island during the month of July. On Maui, the interns will split their time between weed removal at the Conservancy’s Waikamoi Preserve, taro lo‘i restoration and snorkel fish surveys with Maui Cultural Lands, weed removal with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and bird surveys with the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. “Exposing youth from urban communities to nature and conservation careers helps them understand and value the environment,” said Ulalia Woodside, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Hawaii. “Hosting LEAF interns augments our ongoing efforts to engage young people in experiences that connect them with our unique and irreplaceable natural and cultural resources.” Over the last five years, the Conservancy has hosted or supported more than 2,500 youth across the state to train the next generation of conservation leaders. During that time, the youth have participated in The Marine Fellowship Program which has launched four cohorts of new conservation leaders; that program is made possible through a partnership with the National

The Erdman family and its Ulupalakua Ranch were honored by the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service on July 25. Restoration project officials recognized more than two decades of public-minded native forest restoration and protection at Auwahi. Ulupalakua Ranch may be best known for its store, winery, stands of enormous planted trees, cowboys and ranch activities, but it's notable that the native ecosystems of the ranch have been compared to that of a national park. The native forests of Ulupalakua Ranch, in the ahupua‘a of Auwahi, are noted in early botanical literature as among the richest and most diverse forests in the Hawaiian Islands. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Auwahi and forests like it were wahi pana, invaluable as source sites for a wide variety of native fibers, dyes and woods, each species used for a specific purpose. Auwahi and all southern Haleakala forests have declined precipitously because of the impacts of feral animals, fire and invasive plant species; less than 2.5 per-

cent of the original forest remains. "In the 1980s, the rapidly declining forests of Auwahi were generally regarded as a tragedy among Hawaiian biologists," stated a July 21 news release from the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project. "One report called Auwahi a ‘museum forest’, similar to a museum in its value, but also like a museum, only older senescent trees were left without successful reproduction for centuries." Then in 1997, Ulupalakua Ranch partnering with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service began one of the first and most ambitious large scale forest restoration projects in the State. A new restoration technique was developed utilizing the timed planting of native "nurse" plants intended to rebuild forest understory around the trees and reduce herbicide usage. The technique was successful, increasing native species cover in restoration areas from three percent to 82 percent. Today, two-thirds of native tree species at Auwahi are producing seedlings naturally–including some species that had not done so in centuries. Since 1997, the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project and community volunteer restoration trips have planted more than 125,000 native trees. Through the years, more than 1,600 Maui residents including students, educators, ranchers, policy makers, scientists, canoe paddlers, artists, and photographers have volunteered more than 37,000 hours towards restoration efforts. “In over two decades of working on the Auwahi project, Ulupalakua Ranch has never requested publicity of any type but instead served largely as a silent and enthusiastic partner,” said Auwahi project founder Dr. Art Medeiros. “In all my years in conservation, I have never seen another for-profit group act in this way.”

Eight inner high school students from The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii’s Leaders in Environmental Action for the Future (LEAF) program are participating in a summer work adventure on Maui and throughout Hawaii. The LEAF internship program was designed to give inner city youth the opportunity to spend extensive time in nature learning about conservation, science, and green jobs; this is the second year the Conservancy has hosted LEAF interns in Hawaii.

Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The two-year intensive training has graduated 10 students to date; 3 more are about halfway through their fellowship. Other internship and volunteer activities with youth in Hawaii have included high school students from Kamehameha Schools, Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy and Pacific American Foundation in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu removing invasive algae using the Super Sucker; and high school students visiting Waikamoi Preserve on Maui to learn about native forests, birds, and restoration. “We value youth engagement in Hawaii,” said Woodside. “With continued donor support, we hope to be able to continue, or even expand, these kinds of programs.” ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Jordan Haskins, 26, was sentenced to probation and sex counseling in May after pleading guilty to eight charges arising from two auto accidents in Saginaw, Michigan. Prosecutors said Haskins described “cranking,” in which he would remove a vehicle’s spark-plug wires to make it “run rough,” which supposedly improves his chances for a self-service happy ending. Haskins’s lawyer added, “(Cranking) is something I don’t think we understand as attorneys.”

purposefully, obviously–and left without further incident. And Barbara Lowery, 24, was arrested for disorderly conduct in Cullman, Alabama, in May after police spotted her standing on a car, stomping out the windshield and smashing the sun roof. She said it was a boyfriend’s car, that she thought he was cheating on her, and that she had spent the previous night “thinking” about what to do, “pray[ing] about it and stuff.” (However, she said, “I did it anyway.”)

THE DRONE ECONOMY THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT! Le Plat Sal (The Dirty Plate) restaurant in the Marais district of Paris features specialties actually containing dirt–or as Chef Solange Gregoire calls it, “the mud of the earth that caresses our toes, the sand kissed by the sun, and rocks.” Mused a Food Network host in April, “What’s left? People are already eating snout-to-tail, leaves-to-roots....” Gregoire extolled her four-star dishes, including pastry crust a la Mont Lachat rock and a Boue Ragout stew simmered with silt from the River Seine. (NPR also noted that the founder of The Shake Shack was “quietly” planning a new American chain, Rock in Roll.)

EXPENSIVE ROCKS Goldman Sachs analyst Noah Poponak’s 98-page paper (leaked to Business Insider in April) touted the wealth obtainable by capturing the platinum reputed to be in asteroids. The costs to mine the stone (rockets, launch expenses, etc.) might have dropped recently to about $3 billion– a trifle next to the $50 billion worth of platinum Poponak said a single asteroid might contain. (On the other hand, experts point out, such abundance of platinum might crash the worldwide price.)

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Yale University graduate students (well, at least eight of them), claiming “union” status, demonstrated in front of the Yale president’s home in April demanding better benefits (beyond the annual free tuition, $30,000 stipends and free health care). Some of the students characterized their action as an “indefinite fast” while others called it a “hunger strike.” However, a pamphlet associated with the unionizing made it clear that strikers could go eat any time they got hungry.

SMOOTH REACTIONS Police in Cleveland are searching for the woman whose patience ran out on April 14 awaiting her young son’s slow haircut at Allstate Barber College. She pulled out a pistol, took aim at the barber and warned: “I got two clips! I’ll pop you.” She allowed him to finish up–more

A Netherlands startup company announced in March its readiness to release drones capable of tracking freshly deposited dog poop (via an infrared glow from the pile) and, eventually, be guided (perhaps via GPS and artificial intelligence) to scoop up the deposits and carry them away.

POTENTIALLY UNEMPLOYED BEES Researcher-inventor Eijiro Miyako announced in the journal Chem in March that he had created a drone that pollinates flowers (though requiring human guidance until GPS and AI can be enabled). Miyako’s adhesive gel lightly brushes pollen grains, collecting just enough to touch down successfully onto another flower to pollinate it.

CYBORG SPORTS! Social critics and futurists suggest that the next great market for computerization (already underway) will be selling “human improvement” (alas, perhaps merely helping already successful people to even greater heights). Some sports teams are experimenting with “transcranial direct current stimulation” as a way to put athletes’ brains into constant alert, and KQED Radio reported in May that about a third of the San Francisco Giants players have donned weakcurrent headsets that cover the motor cortex at the top of the head. The team’s sports scientist (bonus name: Geoff Head!) said players performed slightly better on some drills after the stimulation. (One the other hand, at press time, the Giants were still next-to-last in the National League West.)

CLEARING THE CONSCIENCE In February, a 52-year-old man who, arrested for DUI and taken to a police station in Germany’s Lower Saxony state, wound up spontaneously confessing to a 1991 cold-case murder in Bonn. Police confirmed that, after reopening the files, they found details matching the man’s account, though the man himself was “not quite clear” why he had confessed. ■

uit driving! You’re going to get someone killed (like me)! I was on my way to work when idiot you in a black Cadillac Escalade tried to turn left onto Pi‘ilani Highway where there were no lights. You inched your way halfway across the empty (thank God) highway so that you were covering half of it with your enormous SUV, instead of using the merge lane for left turners trying to get onto the highway like you should have. Then you sat there, covering the highway until the other side is clear. Next time, just use the merge lane! ■

he video rental store is dead… mostly. Bi-monthly reports surface that the few remaining movie rental stores (which now loan out DVDs and Blu-rays instead of videocassettes) are either gone or struggling for survival. Although a handful of legendary, vast, fan-favorite shops like Scarecrow Video in Seattle are still going strong, the multi-leveled The Video Station, a Boulder operation with a selection

to match a studio vault, recently shut its doors for the last time. Locally, the ubiquitous Blockbuster Video is no longer around and neither are many of the smaller, better mom and pop video shops the corporate giant gobbled up in its heyday. Anyone who loves movies and lived in Lahaina during the latter years of the 20th century still mourns the loss of the two-story, jaw droppingly stuffed Wave Video, which closed after Blockbuster had

shelves of new releases that made the Sorry, We’re Out Entertaining label on VHS boxes highly unlikely. This past spring, the wonderful Pauwela Video–which had been open for 25 years in Haiku–closed, too. With movie buffs increasingly turning to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, other instant streaming options or even Redbox (the McDonald’s equivalent), brick and mortar movie rental stores have largely gone the way of bookstores, record and music shops. Of course, while most people seem to prefer online means to acquire entertainment, the desire for hands-on service, a local hub for film buffs and a selection better than the sequels to Big Momma’s House hasn’t gone away, either. Which brings us to Paradise Video, which sits humbly next to Sheiks and just outside the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului. It’s the last of the finest, the only locally owned and operated video store left on Maui. The store opened in 1981, the brainchild of movie buffs Jeff Yamanishi, Cal Inouye and Al Cantorna. I met with Yamanishi and Inouye at Sheiks one recent morning to discuss the legacy of their store (Cantorna set up the interview but was on a much-needed staycation). They revealed how they manage to keep their customers happy, some favorite memories and where they stand as the last of their kind on Maui. “I knew we’d be around for a while but it’s been what, 35 years?” said Yamanishi. “It’s been an amazing run and hopefully it’ll continue. It’s amazing that we beat out the big boys like Blockbuster. Now we got

these portable guys around, like Redbox. People still want to come into our store and browse. Touch the product, look at it. That’s our advantage over machines. That’s what I like about it.” Inouye shared Yamanishi’s amazement. “Who would’ve thought?” he asked. “We didn’t, that’s for sure. We started just as a hobby. Who knew, 35 years later, we’d still be doing this. And we’re friends still, too, so that’s also amazing.” They told me their store began with a single suitcase, which Yamanishi stuffed with a new novelty: videocassettes for home viewing. “I had, like, 50 VHS tapes, like Enter the Dragon and all those early releases that came out,” said Yamanishi. “We made a plan in front of my old house about renting movies, a new idea at the time. It came to fruition but we had to find a place. We started in Happy Valley. We rented a place and took our movies home when we’d close. We tried to set up an alarm system, but we didn’t know how. So we were like, ‘Let’s just take all the movies home.’ As the movies got bigger, that became a problem. That’s when we started moving on, trying to find another place. It became Central Avenue, second floor. It was an interesting growing experience, from day one to now. It was our love of movies that started us. I bought all these movies, which were $100 each, and thought, ‘Maybe we can make some money back on it.’ So that’s why we decided to trying having them as rentals. All of us had a love for movies and that’s how we all got together.”

Inouye recalled when he knew the store was catching on and home video rental was more than a passing fad. “The way it worked out, everything we made initially went into buying more videos,” said Inouye. Our library grew from 50 and just kept growing and growing. All of us had other jobs. It was part-time for all three of us. We had to move out of the bungalow because we ran out of space. It grew because we had more people coming in and we invested whatever money we had, to the point where we couldn’t take the videos home. There was too much to load up every day. I don’t think we had any idea how big it was gonna get but luckily, it did.” In the early days of the store, a few titles on their shelves led to customer controversy. Once, the cops even got involved. “It was a horror film,” Inouye said. “The police came in. We had it on our shelf, for some reason they knew about it and pulled it off our shelf. We no longer have it and, in fact, they never returned it to us! They took it as evidence, they never charged us for it but never came about it. That was the only one we had problems with.” Yamanishi recalled another controversial rental option: Faces of Death was more of a customer movie, where they would come in and say, ‘That was terrible!’” he recalled. “I think we got the trilogy later on. We got the whole works!” Their eclectic selection helped put them

seen in a long time, saying, ‘I haven’t seen that in years.’ We find it and it’s an advantage for us, too. There’s certain movies we find because people have come to us. It all comes back to when we first started. You remember when Star Wars first came out on VHS? They had a rental plan where the stores could rent them from 20th Century Fox and we’d have to return it to them. You could also buy copies of it. We still have one of the original rental copies of Star Wars on VHS. That’s how far back we go!” Inouye and Yamanishi took a moment to reflect on some of their first customers, who helped build their longstanding reputation. “Our very first customer was Fred Topla,” said Inouye. “The very first one to sign up.” Yamanishi added, “It was $100 for a lifetime membership. They’d laugh at you now if you said it was $100!” Other, slightly better-known names

on the map. “That’s what helped us,” said Inouye. “We were able to find a niche, with movies that, One, you couldn’t see on regular TV and, Two, in our foreign and martial arts movies. Jeff found movies you can’t get online. You can’t even get them from the distributors. Blockbuster didn’t carry them, Netflix doesn’t carry them. That’s our biggest niches, the martial arts and foreign films. We do really well with martial arts.” Yamanishi’s customer-first attitude and dedication to building an in-store library continues to this day. “I try and look for stuff like that,” said Yamanishi. “People tend to remember movies they haven’t

showed up during the early years, too. “There are people who were there when we first started,” said Yamanishi. “Jon Voight came in and we were scrambling to find something for him to sign. We still have the Deliverance VHS box he signed. The pen didn’t work initially, which is always the case in these situations. He put, ‘Blessings, Jon Voight.’ We still have that and we didn’t rent it after that!” Yamanishi and Inouye recalled their chain at its most successful, but also knew exactly when the climate changed for video stores. “9/11 and when Blockbuster Video moved in,” said Inouye. “Those two events affected our business. Prior to that, it was

just gangbusters. We couldn’t keep up. It was crazy busy and that was our fun time. In the beginning, they’d have these video conventions and the three of us would get to go to Vegas or Washington D.C.” “Sometimes at our Lower Main store, we’d rent the movie and throw the empty boxes on the floor, where they’d pile up,” said Inouye. “Those were the days.” Although Paradise Video no longer has competition from local stores, Inouye and Yamanishi are respectful when recalling the competition they once faced. “We knew it once it caught on, we wouldn’t be the only ones,” said Yamanishi. According to Inouye, “There was a one-hour photo studio at the Maui Mall. The owner carried and rented videos. He opened five days before us, so he technically was the first one to rent on the island. We came in as the first full-fledged video store.” Although Maui soon began accumulating more video rental stores, Inouye insisted that the atmosphere was friendly. “A lot of the owners of the other store were members of ours,” he said. “They started with us. They knew how we’re doing it and they adopted the same procedures as we did. We all got along because we knew each other. At one point, there was going to be an association on the island, like a Video Group, but that never came to be. Instead, we joined the National Video Software Dealers Association.” “They’re still around,” said Yamanishi. “Just in a much smaller capacity.” As their chain continued to expand island-wide, the Paradise Video owners began noticing customer trends and expectations in certain stores. “The Pukalani store customers were more into dramas, foreign and art house movies,” said Yamanishi. “Down here, it would rent once. If it was an art house movie with Chuck Norris or [JeanClaude] Van Damme, maybe it might go out! It was sad to see the Pukalani store close. That store was doing better than the stores down here. Over the years, we learn from our mistakes. We still have people who don’t bring back the movies.” Then Yamanishi turned to Inouye. “Remember that one guy, who didn’t bring back the movies, so we went to his address and there was no house there?” Yamanishi asked Inouye. “It was an empty lot!” “It’s a chance we take when we rent out movies,” Inouye told me. “For the most part, we’ve been pretty lucky and got a lot of our stuff back.” I asked them how they keep the customers coming. Their old school approach says a great deal about their respect for

and knowledge of their customers. “We still feel that we can keep going as long as people still want to see movies,” said Yamanishi. “That doesn’t go away, that feeling. It just depends on how they want to do that.” “Our customers like to look at the boxes and have it physically in their hands to know if it’s what they want or not,” said Inouye. “Hopefully we can help them find what they’re looking for. You can’t get that from Redbox. Just being there for the customer, as well as having the product there and hopefully we can keep getting them what they want. Theaters are getting expensive. We like to watch movies on the big screen but it’s expensive. We’re affordable. They come to us–we even have popcorn.” Then Yamanishi and Inouye offered me their secret weapon. “Our advantage: movies are really expensive,” Yamanishi. “Some tickets are $15 per person.” “[But] we offer one new release, one old title for three days,” said Inouye. “We try to give them their money’s worth,” said Yamanishi. “We got twoday old rentals for $2.98.” In preparing for this article, I decided to test the most popular way to get movies on demand. I made a list of 20 random movies and decided to pit Netflix Instant Streaming against going to Paradise Video and searching their shelves. After searching for the 20 titles on Netflix, I found they had just one in their database (Sunset Boulevard). But after spending 10 minutes in Paradise Video, I located 15 of the movies on my list. That’s because their collection holds more than 12,000 titles. Paradise Video is where you go if you want to see Avatar or Avengers: Age of Ultron, but why not dig deeper? How about Picture Bride, the lovely, locally made 1995 film about early 20th century island life that was the first film to represent Hawaii at the Cannes Film Festival? Or a few well-remembered but seldom seen guilty pleasures like Stone Cold starring Brian “The Boz” Bosworth, Tom Selleck’s Indiana Jones-wannabe High Road to China or Disorderlies, the only slapstick comedy to ever star The Fat Boys? There’s also the once-in-a-lifetime Ice Cube/Ice-T team-up Trespass, the John Ritter glow-in-the-dark-condom comedy Skin Deep and the rarely seen Aloha Summer, a drama about Hawaii’s first batch of tourists. They also have every Zatoichi adventure, 36 shelves of martial arts action and, yes, all the Faces of Death installments. “To be around this long, we must be doing something right,” said Yamanishi.

Paradise Video is located at 115 S. Wakea Ave. in Kahului. If you stop by Paradise Video and mention “Maui Time” or “Barry Wurst,” you’ll get one Free Rental during August 2017. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

rounded by toum, lettuce, pickles and tabouli. The plate comes with saffron rice, mixed greens and tahini dressing ($14). Other shawarma offerings are fish, chicken, falafel and the al hadiya, a mixture of the meats ($12-14). Their chicken is also slow-broiled chicken marinated in the house spices. I can’t decide which I like more, each is elegant in its own way. Habibi also offers salad dishes like tabouli, tabouleh, chickpea fatoush and Saudi salad ($6-11). The have a selection of housemade breads ($6-8) like sambousic, described as savory dough filled with onion and stuffed with Greek feta and mozzarella, garnished in tomato and parsley with tahina. The housemade pita is served with spices and oil and zaater bread, savory dough with olive oil, zaatar spices and toasted sesame and mozzarella. Worrell says any of the dishes can be made without garlic, if you prefer. The desserts are baklava ($3), a traditional filo dough with almonds and mac nuts, honey and rose water, and loukoumades ($6), which are fried dough fingers tossed in nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar and glazed with orange

he little courtyard in Makawao, where Habibi popped up next door to the Rodeo General, is gorgeous. This is good because the Middle Eastern restaurant, the name of which loosely translates as "my friend" or "my beloved," serves equally gorgeous and delicious food. After a few years behind the wheel of the Habibi food truck, Michael Worrell decided to look for a more permanent spot. Worrell grew up in Saudi Arabia, and those flavors stuck with him. “The food, I just was missing it,” says Worrell. “These are flavors I like, what I grew up with. I lived in Dhahran. We used to take family vacations to Maui. It started when I was five. I have been here 15 years now. I was a boat captain, but a couple years ago I quit the boat and

started a food truck–Habibi.” Worrell sold the food truck, then found a spot for a restaurant. At the time, it was an overgrown patch in Makawao. He cleared the bamboo and put gravel down and added some open-air seating. After putting in specialty plants and sculptures, his garden dining spot was complete. The Makawao climate is perfect for this al fresco restaurant. The dining room sits on the ridge and the back wall is a bamboo thicket, which means there's plenty of cool upcountry breeze rustling by. “This place worked out," says Worrell. “There was nothing here. It had been sitting forever. I worked out a deal with the property manager that I would clean it up. He let me do what I wanted, which was really nice.” The menu is fantastic. By moving to a permanent location, he's been able to expand his old food truck menu. Habibi offers mezza plates, pizzas, fries, salads, breads and shawarmas. The mezza plates were my favorite because they include a

mix of everything, like a sampler platter. They come in vegan ($14), vegetarian ($14), fish ($15) or the Al Souq ($16), which includes falafel balls, lamb, chicken, fried cauliflower, hummus, tabouleh, toum, tahina, mixed greens, feta, saffron rice and pita. “The lamb shawarmas and the Al Souq are the favorites,” says Worrell. “Those are number one, they have a little bit of everything. We make the tahini from scratch–it's all organic. The hummus, too. The falafels are organic and gluten-free–we make them with garbanzo flour. The pita we make fresh daily here, too. The pizza dough, too.”

Michael Worrell and Lindsay Hogan of Habibi

The pizzas are baked to order so the menu asks that you allow 15 to 20 minutes when ordering one. They are tasty thin crust, spiced versions of the familiar favorite, with toppings like roasted lamb and tahini sauce, creamy garlic with red peppers and onions and roasted chicken with feta and mac nuts ($10-14). The spicy Imshi fries ($6) are tossed in herbs and spices, then topped with mozzarella, tabouleh, tahina and sriracha, for an very different version of hurricane fries. They can also put spices and sauces on the side if you prefer. The shawarmas are Mediterranean sandwiches. The lamb shawarma is slowbroiled halal lamb marinated in the house spice blend. This tender savory meat is dropped into a housemade pita and sur-

blossom honey. They're a perfectly sweet way to round out a meal. When they first opened, they were open for dinner, but staffing changes mean their hours are now just 11am to 3pm daily. They do stay open into the night for Third Friday town parties, and offer entertainment. “I'm training another cook right now, but I'm here right now most days,” says Worrell. “We're going to try to open up for the night time again. Third Fridays have been great. We have belly dancers here, they do a couple sets. It's really nice.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

The Aspects of Coffee DA VINE ART CAFE IN PAIA ADDS EUROPEAN COFFEE TO THEIR MENU

“We're still doing the wine and beer thing. We're staying away from the bar thing, it's too difficult. We're staying with wine and beer but now we have added the coffee and liquors.” They keep a selection of liquors handy for spiked coffees, too. “My favorite coffee is a shot with Kahlua and whipped cream on top,” says Brown. “I have to wait at least until 11am, until it's somewhat the cocktail hour. Legally we can serve spiked coffee starting from 6:30am. There's no shame in that.” The shop opens at 7am and has extended hours for summer. They don't have a happy hour per se, but keep great prices on their high quality beer and wine all day–after all, there's a wine shop next door. Beers are $4 and wines can range from $8 to $18 a glass. The cafe also serves light fare like pastries, bagels and tea. It would be great if the Wine Corner store and the cafe were one, and you could taste wines before you purchase them. Brown says eventually he

reg Brown doesn't drink coffee, but that didn't stop him from opening a cafe in Paia. I recently met him at Da Vine Art Cafe in Paia with Susun White, his wife, and daughter Gaia Golden Brown, who was working as the barista one morning to sample their espresso and talk about the new change in their intimate wine bar. “I am not a coffee drinker,” says Brown. “But what I found out, especially from the Europeans, is their attitude towards coffee. They are more purists. What I do to my coffee with milk and syrup is not real

coffee. I've been finding out all the aspects of coffee. They are as diverse and meaningful to people as folks that drink wine. Even with coffee, you want to drink it out of the right glass. Europeans won't drink coffee out of a paper cup–they frown on that.” While we chat, Gaia makes an exquisite cappuccino for me. It's strong and smooth. “Ed from Anthony's Coffee has helped and consulted with me to an extent,” says Brown. “He's shown us how to prepare coffee the way Europeans prepare it. We have a couple of Czechoslovakian guys that had a cafe in Lahaina that have also helped and consulted.” Their focus on coffee is pretty geeky, but they're not letting it detract from their primary reason for being. “We're still Da Vine Art,” says White.

would love to have the wine store and the cafe combined or a doorway opening to combine the two, but that would require new liquor laws on the books in Maui County. In the mean time, Brown is focusing on getting the coffee right. “There's a lot to it," Brown says. "How you grind the coffee, what coffee you grind. How long you take to run hot water through it. We have good baristas that know coffee. To be a barista, there's a lot more than just pouring the coffee in and pulling the handle. We have a good machine, and good water, the right temperatures. Our whole thing is to get to that European coffee. More people are into coffee than wine by a long shot. You can get away with drinking a bad bottle of wine, but a bad cup of coffee does not fly." ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

'Aloha, Mr. Hand' Even after 35 years, ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ is still a triumph ★★★★★ Rated R / 90 Min.

I

loved almost every minute of my high school experience (particularly my senior year) but know I'm in the minority. Most movies about high school aren't about what really happened but a fantasy of what we wish it were like. On the other hand, there's Amy Heckerling's Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Stacy, a young teen whose growing interest in sex defines the best and worst moments of her sophomore year. While Stacy discovers hard truths about the boys she obsesses over, her best friend Linda (played by Phoebe Cates) seems to know all the angles, dating rituals and sexual techniques that mystify Stacy. Brad, Stacy's brother (played by Judge Reinhold) has little time for his sister, as his managerial position at a fast food restaurant and hot girlfriend (Amanda Wyss of A Nightmare on Elm Street) seem to indicate great things ahead. Then there's Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn in his breakthrough role), a knuckleheaded surfer dude whose testy relationship with his teacher, Mr. Hand (Ray Walston), defines his eventful school days. Heckerling's film, which is now 35 years old, was released after the horny teens blockbuster Porky's, before Revenge of the Nerds and just as John Hughes' high school comedies began dominating the decade. Most movies about our eventful teen years portray (and even encourage) stereotypes, stock characters and clichés and pair everyone into clicks...it's like these movies were made by their designated audience.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High is written by Cameron Crowe, who, at 22, famously masqueraded as a high school student, published a book on what he witnessed and turned it into a screenplay. His script is frequently hilarious but surprisingly raw at times. A frank abortion subplot doesn't derail it and neither does the verybroad, wholly un-PC bit where Spicoli finds a way to lie and justify the destruction of a new car. There's an unfiltered honesty here that you won't find in Sixteen Candles. In Heckerling's hands, the hard truths about the acne n' angst years aren't black and white. The handsome, Most Likely To Succeed Overachiever is actually kind of a schmuck, the Hot Girl is more worldly than most are ready for, the Innocent Girl With a Heart of Gold takes stupid risks and the Class Clown is a riot but really, really stupid. Penn is brilliant in this but Reinhold actually steals the movie playing an even funnier character. As if the main cast weren't enough (Walston, Wyss, Cates and Leigh are wonderful), there's also Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Anthony Edwards and a sleepy looking Nicolas Cage in small supporting turns. Heckerling's and Crowe's attention to key details makes the movie more honest and insightful than just about every other movie in its genre. Note how Leigh stares at wall graffiti during one of her bad

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

sexual experiences. Watch Heckerling linger on the moments leading up to Spicoli's hitstoric first encounter with Mr. Hand. The filmmakers may not have known they were making a classic but they clearly understood their characters. How important is it that a woman directed this and not a man? Let me put it this way: Heckerling's Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Martha Coolidge's Valley Girl are the only high school teen comedies from this decade that truly matter. The sensitivity, observant characterizations and authenticity of these films make them essential works. Heckerling's film may have been made for younger audiences, but it still avoids formula.

How '80s is this movie? In addition to the hairstyles, vernacular, music and carefree homophobia, there's lots of video game arcade footage and a dreamy stud described as looking "as sexy as Richard Gere." Growing up in the 1980s, I devoured every movie Hughes made. Despite how important The Breakfast Club is and how much fun most of his other movies are, they're all kind of a crock. If Hughes' movies were the antidote to Porky's, then Fast Times At Ridgemont High is the welcome alternative to Molly Ringwald ditching Jon Cryer at the prom over Andrew McCarthy. As if! Fast Times At Ridgemont High plays Sunday, July 30 and Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 2pm and 7pm at the Maui Mall Megaplex. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Every sign has its ruling planet, and yes, you’re ruled by the Sun. That’s how amazing and badass you are. You get to own all that radiance and power this week, and embody it as only you can do, but please don’t let it go to your head. Humility is a virtue that’s sometimes hard for your average shining, brilliant Leo to master. You’ve at least grasped the basics, and it’d be a shame to lose your grip on those now; being humble could come in handy in the weeks to come–resulting, ironically, in more glory, attention, and adoration. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

End the internal debate at once. Sometimes you just have to make a decision, and resolve to simply live with the consequences. In this case, there are too many unknowns. Making a clear choice is just plain impossible; nothing’s the least bit obvious. Trying to factor all those variables into your plans would only make you nuts (or an unevolved Libra, endlessly dithering and never acting). It sucks to have to make a leap of faith while partially blindfolded, but let me assure you–it’s far better than not leaping at all. Let me also remind you: you almost always land on your feet, regardless of the mess you jump into. You will this time, too.

perfecting skills that arguably have little practical purpose, beyond being an enjoyable “waste of time.” They write poetry, they play Ping-Pong, they build model airplanes, and so on. Sure, at the outer edges of those eclectic interests lie possible sources of income or notoriety, or chances to make the world a significantly better place. I know you do what you do because it’s fun, and no other reason, but now is a good time to explore just how viable those options might be. How far can you take this obsessive hobby of yours, really? This week, find out.

QUIZ understood

ANSWERS

...to questions from page 4

1: E–$302.0 million 2: A–3.6 percent 3: D–60 percent

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Try to remember how insecure everybody is. Sometimes you get so caught up in your own self-doubts that you forget that everybody else is experiencing something like them, too. Consequently you take on more negativity than you ought to, convinced that any shit going down has everything to do with your shortcomings, when it could actually stem from someone else’s fears and doubts, or something else altogether. Because most of the crap floating your way this week has virtually nothing to do with you, I ask you to remember that we’re all weak, sometimes, and imperfect. Then you can quit feeling bad about the situation, and start improving it instead.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Don’t mess with success. I offer this trite cliché as valid advice, because your admirable ideas to shake things up and try something different will almost certainly backfire this week (making you doubt yourself even more than you already do). Save those great ideas and experiments for another week, when they’re more likely to succeed. For now, go with what you know. When in doubt, go retro. You don’t need to be cutting edge; your forte is being classy, not trendy. Why bother with the new when you can do the tried-and-true better than anyone you know? SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Poor Pluto. More than a decade ago, it was demoted to “dwarf planet” status, when scientists discovered that there are even more massive versions of those roaming the edges of our solar system. What does this mean, astrologically? From some perspectives it could indicate that Scorpio stock is way down, that what you have to offer is steadily losing value. But I think it’s actually indicative of a new era–a new way of being a Scorpio. Our society is sorely in need of fresh, revolutionary perspectives about sex and death–two of your primal foci. No one is more qualified to figure out how to take what we think and feel about our sexuality and mortality and turn it on its head.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Rams are supposed to recreate reality to suit them. It’s what you do. I know I’ve frequently asked you to temper that urge, and be sensitive to situations that you shouldn’t butt your big head into. Still, I hope you haven’t lost the knack, because this week it’s time for you to take charge, whip things into shape, and make them conform to your own (in this case) brilliant ideas about how things should be. Don’t take no for an answer. Be bossy. You know what’s best, this time, even if others don’t want to admit it. Make them see the light. They may be too stubborn to thank you later, but never mind that; most of us will. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

I have a friend whose teeth hurt when she eats things that are too sweet. Another feels weary and lethargic if he doesn’t do his daily stretches and workout. I get slightly chapped lips whenever I’m stressed out or especially sleep deprived. The point is we’re all given subtle hints about how to best take care of ourselves, from our bodies, dreams, and other sources. You’ve been ignoring yours, or denying them. Unfortunately, when you don’t heed these gentle reminders, you’re usually given more forceful ones you can’t so easily disregard. Don’t let it come to that, please.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

In Centralia, Pennsylvania, unpredictable subterranean coal fires have been burning for decades. A while back the government declared the place too dangerous for habitation and offered to buy residents’ houses. Nearly everyone moved; as of 2013 only seven die-hards remained. I can’t explain why they stuck it out, except, perhaps, out of sheer stubbornness; surely practically everything they ever loved about the place must have vanished with the fleeing residents. Are you still inhabiting somewhere (perhaps an idea, a relationship, or a situation) that no longer resembles the place you moved into? Maybe it changed for the better, but if it got worse, isn’t it time you moved out, especially if there’s a good alternative deal on offer? CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You might prefer not to multi-task. In general, you might even prove to be more efficient when you focus on only one thing at a time. This week, however, that’s a luxury you can’t afford, as there are likely to be thousands or millions of demands on your attention. If you give them each a number and ask them to wait their turn, you’ll soon be facing a mutiny. This is where you have to take your organization skills to new levels, and figure out how to do three, five, or eight things at once, without killing yourself or screwing them all up.

VOTED BEST

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

There have been so many times you’ve been forced to eat your words. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were forgotten after you chewed them up, forced them down, and shat them out. Unfortunately, they often keep coming back to haunt you. Sometimes this serves as a useful reminder about what kinds of mistakes and missteps to avoid in the future; usually it’s just annoying, because you’re not about to forget those hard-learned lessons. This week, if someone tries to make you chew up and swallow something you said more than a year ago, consider yourself within your rights to spit it back in his face, and gently assure him that you don’t need to taste that particular dish ever again.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You can get sunburn on a cloudy day. It might be windy and chilly, so you wouldn’t even notice the UV rays scorching your skin. I don’t believe in living in fear of unforeseeable consequences, but sometimes preventative measures are just so easy that it’s pointless not to do them. Slapping on a coat of sunscreen would take just a few seconds. Consider similarly simple protective efforts this week and in general; they could keep you safe from boatloads of suffering and misery. They may also prove to be entirely unnecessary, but do you really want to find out the hard way?
