“Olowalu is special,” Native Hawaiian cultural specialist Clifford Naeole told me in 2016. “Olowalu is a place with significance. But Olowalu as a place is not really recognized. It needs to have its own sense of place. There needs to be an altar, a temple erected there, just like Wounded Knee.”
MORE GOOD CLIMATE NEWS COMING OUR WAY
McKinley High and its infamous statue
HAWAII TAKES UP FIGHT AGAINST BAD STATUES
PHOTO COURTESY NPS CLIMATE CHANGE RESPONSE
It’s heartwarming to see activists way out here in Hawaii take up the civil rights struggle being fought right now in the continental U.S. over statues that honor the so-called “heroes” of the Confederacy. Those particular statues don’t exist out here, but that doesn’t mean we don’t face the same underlying issues. The fight is not, as white supremacists are fond of saying, over erasing history. That fight was lost–both in the Mainland U.S. and here in Hawaii–long ago. Statues and monuments play a role in teaching history, sure, but mostly they just honor individuals and events that the establishment cherishes. In the southern United States, that meant cities and towns wishing to push back against the Civil Rights Era erected a ton of statues to Confederates (the majority of the statues under fire today in the U.S. went up during the Jim Crow era as a way of both reassuring whites who were frightened that a true meritocracy–one devoid of any race-based calculus–was on the horizon and intimidating black citizens who wanted an equal say in society. Removing these statues now sends a powerful message that white supremacy was and remains vile. The same is happening here. On Sunday, Aug. 20, a group of activists marched on McKinley High School in Honolulu, calling for the removal of the statue of President William McKinley that stands there. “He led the takeover of Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines and Cuba,” said Khara Jabola-Carolus, co-founder of AF3IRM Hawaii, in an Aug. 20 Hawaii News Now story. “His legacy is painful for people of color in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific.” It makes sense that AF3IRM is so prominent in this action. As their website notes, they don’t mess around. “Hawai‘i is not the playground of the new gilded age,” states the AF3IRM Hawaii website. “We are a battleground for indigenous, immigrant, and women’s self-
determination. We focus on fighting for improvements to women’s daily lives on all fronts including the legislature, the city council, the courtroom, the boardroom, and the classroom.” But I digress. As President, McKinley built up the United States as a mighty world power by exploiting the resources and labor of conquered peoples throughout the Caribbean and Pacific. Honoring him now is an affront to our modern notions of justice and civil rights. Of course, we shouldn’t stop there. If McKinley’s statue should come down, then so should the various statues and monuments honoring Captain James Cook around Hawaii. I can’t think of a more blatant expression of white supremacist imperialism than a statue of Cook (of course, the issue of what symbols to knock down is highly subjective: a friend of the paper, when asked what he’d like to see go, said simply, “Knock down Waikiki and return da kalo!”). At the same time, how about erecting new statues that honor individuals and events that have been whitewashed? It’s nice that Maui has statues of Queen Ka‘ahumanu (though it’s in a shopping mall instead of public property) and the Chinese physician and revolutionary Sun Yat Sen, but how about one of David Malo? And while we’re at it, put up some sort of monument in Olowalu to commemorate the 100 or so victims of the 1790 massacre there.
Yes, it’s depressing to watch the Trump Administration do everything it can to dismantle federal efforts at researching and countering climate change. The State of Hawaii obviously feels differently about the issue, which is why sometime around the end of the year (assuming we all live that long), the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will publish the long-awaited Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Report. This study will lay out in detail the damage sea level rise will inflict on Hawaii.
and utilities, 116 miles of roadway flooded, 6,500 structures flooded, 20,700 displaced people and the loss of 550 cultural sites by the year 2100, according to the most recent scientific modeling and economic projections,” stated the West Hawaii Today story. Yes, that was $19 billion with a b. And nearly 21,000 residents driven from their homes with more than a hundred miles of roadways across the state flooded. This is a catastrophe that will dramatically change how people live in Hawaii. Think about all the luxurious homes and condos situated near the ocean on just Maui–you think those will still be usable in a century? “The sea level is rising as we speak,” the paper quotes Sam Lemmo, administrator of DLNR’s Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, as saying. “We’re having to really dance on our feet and adapt to the rapidly changing conditions around us.” Which is why the whole “by the year 2100” thing is tricky. That doesn’t mean things
Coming sooner than you think
It’s not expected to be good, West Hawaii Today reported on Aug. 20. “The rising ocean could cost the state $19 billion in lost land and structures, untold millions more in lost infrastructure such as roads
Overheard “Believe it or not, I’m very particular about my to-go coffee cups.” -Woman in Starbucks in Kihei, Aug. 17
will be great until then–it means everything’s going haywire right now, and will continue to get worse until things are really bad in 2100. Remember, sea level rise isn’t just happening– it’s accelerating (in some places faster than others, to be clear). The Southeastern U.S. has really been hit hard in the last few years, and there’s no sign of things getting any better. “Things can really change in five years, and when you look at the projections, you don’t really get that sense,” said Andrea Dutton, a geological science professor at the University of Florida in an Aug. 10 Scientific American article. “I think the projections give you a false sense of security because you say, ‘OK, we’re not going to get to this level until the year 2060 or whatever.’ But in reality, it can happen much faster.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Loope, born on Feb. 4, 1943 in Virginia, combined his passion for the outdoors and science, eventually earning a doctorate in botany from Duke University in 1970 and working in the Everglades and Grand Teton national parks. After reading a book about Hawaii’s natural history, he moved his family to Maui in 1980, serving a research biologist for Haleakala National Park, his family said. During some of his free time, he’d combine hikes with his children with eradicating invasive species. “He’d take me a lot to look for invasive species specially on our free time,” said his son Marshall. “We’d pull out fountain grass.” Marshall Loope, a plant quarantine inspector at Kahului Airport, said he was proud of his father’s efforts to restore the silversword by fencing out pigs and goats from Haleakala National Park. Loope is survived by his wife Keri Duke, daughter Brook Loope and sons Bennett Loope and Marshall. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked friends to make a donation to the Maui Invasive Species Committee, P.O. expertise as a botanist placed him at the forefront of a battle against Miconia, a large leaf tree that at the time had destroyed about 70 percent of Tahiti’s native forest. The establishment of the Melastome Action Committee, later known as the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) in 1999, began as a public-private partnership under the University of Hawaii that drew upon personnel and resources of the county, state, and federal government as well as landowners and volunteers. It made use of helicopters to identify areas affected by Miconia and employed various methods of eradication, including poisoning and removal. Other invasive species committees followed on Hawaii Island, Kauai and Oahu. Loope was an outspoken critic of the lack of adequate government screening processes to protect the native environment, noting that the federal process to ban noxious weeds took too long. He also was critical of allowing international flights to Maui without a state agricultural screening facility at Kahului Airport. State officials, facing a lawsuit opposed to extending the Maui runway for international flights, eventually agreed to build the agricultural screening facility–the first and only one in the state.

MISSION BLUE COALITION NAMES OLOWALU REEF A ‘HOPE SPOT’
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GROUNDBREAKING Habitat for Humanity Maui hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 12 for 10 homes it will be building in the Kahoma Residential Subdivision in Lahaina. Habitat Maui received 142 applications for the 10 single family homes. Applicants were screened to ensure they met Habitat’s criteria to be a “partner homeowner;” those who passed were entered into a lottery overseen by Maui County Housing and Human Concerns Director Carol Reimann. “Kudos to Habitat for making homeownership a reality for working families in Maui,” said Reimann. The “partner homeowners” were on hand to select lots for their new houses. “It was chicken-skin as families made their lot selections,” Reimann added. Habitat for Humanity Maui–which was incorporated in 1996 and officially became an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in 1997–is also raising funds for a new home build in the Waiohuli Hawaiian Homelands upcountry and two renovations in Wailuku. To date, Habitat has built and renovated 115 houses on Maui, providing safe and affordable homes for more than 500 people. Habitat will hold its 20th Anniversary Celebration fundraiser at the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort on Sept. 30. The event will include dinner, a casino room, a live rock and roll band, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Tickets are $195/person and come with $100 in funny money chips for the casino room. For more information about any of Habitat for Humanity Maui programs or events, please call their office at 808-2421140 or go to Habitat-maui.org. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Mission Blue Coalition has named the Olowalu reef a “Hope Spot” to recognize and support the Olowalu CMMA’s (Olowalu Community Managed Makai Area) efforts to protect the nearly one thousand-acre coral reef. The August 17 announcement coincided with the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Mahalo Hawaii Sail to bring Hokule‘a and Hikianalia home as a way to thank the people, share lessons learned from the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, and deepen the organization’s connection and understanding of the important work being done here in the islands to care for the earth. Supporters of Dr. Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue Coalition and the CMMA gathered aboard Hokule‘a to announce the “Hope Spot” and reinforce the importance of being dedicated to Olowalu reef. Veteran waterman and Lahaina resident Archie Kalepa arrived aboard the voyaging canoe to greet the Olowalu community, saying we need to be stewards and protect what we have left. “We are in a good place and at a good time,” Kalepa said. “We come home to find out how beautiful our place is, and to find the jewel in our own backyard–Olowalu. As soon as we arrived at Olowalu today, I wanted to jump off the canoe.” Both the “Hope Spot” and Hokule‘a events allow the community to shine the light on their work, according to Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Nainoa Thompson. “Olowalu is a place where community, culture, indigenous knowledge and science is coming together to take care of this reef, to find solutions for their place,” Thompson said. “This is the first of 42 ports that Hokule‘a will visit, and if this is
any indication of what all the other ports will look like, there is no place on earth that is moving at as rapid a pace to take care of their home than Hawaii.” Olowalu CMMA was started by a small group of Olowalu residents, lineal descendants, and scientists out of their love of and connection to Olowalu reef, which is used by thousand of people each year for fishing, recreation, and tourism. After years of seeing the reef degrading, the group came together to unite the community to counter threats of shoreline loss and coastal hardening along the Honoapi‘ilani Highway from Pali to Puamana; threats to the reef include sediment being washed into storm drains and out onto the reef from erosion and fires, and rising sea surface temperatures that are bleaching and killing corals. Mission Blue, led by oceanographer
Earle, is uniting a global coalition to inspire an upwelling of public awareness, access and support for a worldwide network of protected marine habitats known as “Hope Spots.” Under Earle’s leadership, the Mission Blue team implements communications campaigns that elevate “Hope Spots” to the world stage through documentaries, social media, traditional media and innovative tools like Google Earth. In addition to CMMA’s goal to protect and restore the healthy coastal and marine ecosystems, the community group’s grassroots efforts seek to perpetuate Hawaiian values of malama ‘aina (to care for the land and sea) and kuleana (responsibility) by restoring a balance between people and nature. “We invite the people of Olowalu and Maui to join us as we begin a process to create a plan of mauka to makai stewardship here in Olowalu, from, by and for the community,” said activist Tiare Lawrence. “Please reach out to me via Facebook.” As for Mission Blue, the group also embarks on regular oceanic expeditions that shed light on these vital ecosystems and build support for their protection. Currently, the Mission Blue alliance includes more than 200 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations, from large multinational companies to dedicated community management. “The Olowalu reef is Maui’s crown jewel,” said marine scientist Mark Deakos, PhD. “[Olowalu is] home to the oldest living coral in the main Hawaiian Islands and the largest known manta ray population in US waters. The Olowalu reef sustains a huge diversity of rare and unique coral species and acts as a nursery to replenish and populate the reefs of west Maui, Molokai and Lanai.”

News Of The Weird THE THREATENED AMERICAN WORKER A local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in Battle Creek, Michigan, is butting heads with Western Michigan University this summer after the school brought in a goat crew to clean up an overgrown woodlot on campus, leaving union workers without jobs. The AFSCME’s grievance cites a collective bargaining agreement with WMU, but university officials counter that “the area is rife with poison ivy and other invasive species,” which are difficult for humans to remove. The 20-goat crew, rented from Munchers on Hooves in Coldwater, Michigan, is ahead of schedule in clearing a 15-acre area.
WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE… Robert Kanoff, 49, celebrated Independence Day in an unusual way: High on drugs, he was dropped off in his birthday suit at a Tempe, Arizona, Walmart by two people who thought it would be “funny to see him naked,” said police. There he walked around the store wearing only shoes and carrying methamphetamines. Maricopa County sheriff’s officers caught up with him around 10 p.m. across the street from the store.

Unfortunately, the company’s founder, Zhao Shuping, didn’t provide instructions about returning the rentals after use, and most of the umbrellas have disappeared. The Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival, in which water buffalo are pitted against each other, has been a tradition in Hai Phong, Vietnam, since the 18th century. But on July 1, buffalo trainer Dinh Xuan Huong, 46, met his doom when his own bull turned on him. The buffalo first knocked Dinh to the ground, then flipped him over its head, goring Dinh’s leg with its horn. Dinh later died at the Vietnam-Czech Friendship Hospital. Buffalo fighting was stopped in the country during the Vietnam War, but the fights resumed in 1990.

Police in Swansea, Illinois, suspect the heir to a brewery fortune has graduated from driving drunk to flying high. August Adolphus Busch IV, 53, landed his helicopter around noon on July 10 in an office complex parking lot outside St. Louis. Police and FAA investiga-
tors were still trying to determine why he had landed there and whether any aviation laws had been broken when they were called back to the parking lot around 8 p.m., where Busch, appearing to be intoxicated, was trying unsuccessfully to take off. Swansea police reported that Busch failed field sobriety tests but passed a breath test, and after they secured a warrant, Busch was taken to a local hospital for blood tests. (Also found in the helicopter: four loaded guns, several prescription pill bottles and eight dogs.) At press time, no charges had been filed.
LACKING A FILTER Baseball fans at the Los Angeles Dodgers-Kansas City Royals game in Dodger Stadium on July 8 were treated to some righteous moves on the dance cam by “Rally Granny,” an older fan who capped her performance by flashing her bra at the 40,000-plus spectators. “You don’t see THAT much at a baseball stadium,” deadpanned Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger (who actually missed the spectacle).
FROM BAD TO WORSE Two women in Arlington, Texas, called police for help on July 10 as a mentally ill man doused himself with gasoline in preparation to commit suicide. When responding officers began talking with the distraught man, he poured more gasoline on himself and appeared to be holding a lighter in his hand. Hoping to subdue him, one of the officers used his Taser on the man and the gasoline ignited, engulfing him in flames. Officers wrapped him in blankets and removed him from the house. His family reports he was severely burned, and at press time he was in critical condition.
NOW YOU HAVE OUR ATTENTION On July 6, IRS workers in Ogden, Utah, received a fake bomb from Normand Lariviere, 68, of Olympia, Washington. The U.S. Navy veteran and former civilian defense contractor has been disgruntled with the Department of Defense since his dismissal in the 1990s and has a history of mailing disturbing objects to the IRS to protest paying taxes. In 2016, Lariviere sent one of his fingers, a bullet and a marijuana joint to tax collectors. “Many things I could do,” he threatened. “I’m not going to tip my hand.”
AWESOME! A mathematician in Bucharest, Romania, scored a 44,900 euro profit when he made an exciting discovery at a flea market there: a rare World War II Enigma machine, used by the Nazis for encrypting messages. After paying the unwitting seller just 100 euros ($114 U.S.) for it, he took it into his care, cleaning and repairing it and learning how it worked. On July 11, a Bucharest auction house sold the machine for 45,000 euros ($51,500 U.S.) to an unnamed bidder. ■

By Jen Russo ‘Ulu is Polynesia’s very own super fruit. It grows fast and one tree creates tons of food. Growing ‘ulu is a step towards fortifying our island’s very own sustainable food chain, but there’s a catch: everyone needs to learn how to prepare, eat, grow and demand it. 10 AUGUST 24, 2017

and can be grown Upcountry as well as near sea level. It also creates vast shady areas. In parts of Polynesia, it’s said that people plant an ‘ulu tree with the birth of a child to ensure a lifelong food supply. An ‘ulu tree can produce as much as 350 to 1,000 pounds of fruit in a year. If you’re interested in growing an ‘ulu tree, expert arborist Alex Quintana will be on hand to demonstrate orchard management as well as several other ‘ulu revitalization organizations and farmers. Noa Lincoln, a University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources researcher and specialist in indigenous crops, will share ongoing ‘ulu research and show folks how to jump into a statewide citizen science program. Lincoln will also talk about how breadfruit habitat will alter with climate change projections. “There will be a multi-grower native plant and Hawaiian varieties for sale at La ‘Ulu,” says Germano. “There will new cultivars of orange, yellow and red ‘ hia; ‘alula, a rare and beautiful endangered species that looks like a cabbage on a stick; the endangered nanu or native Gardenia; Hawaiian kalo varieties, and Pacific cultivars of ‘ulu for sale. Native plants suitable for both low and high elevations will be available, with the UH Cooperative Extension Maui Master Gardener Program Members on hand to help select plants that will thrive in your area.” More than 25 different exhibitors have been invited to La ‘Ulu. All are organizations based in Hawaiian culture and conservation. The National Tropical Botanical Garden Breadfruit Institute will be there to share their Global Hunger Initiative that centers around battling food security and deforestation in tropical regions by planting ‘ulu. Kahanu Gardens will be on hand to inspire chefs and cooks to participate in their ‘ulu cook-off on Oct. 12 that will be a part of Hana’s Festival of Aloha celebration. Hokuau Pelligrino of Noho‘ana Farms, who is also the president of Maui Historical Society, will give a keynote presentation about the cultural significance of ‘ulu and Maui’s own history of plantations on the slopes of Mauna Kahalawai. The festival will kick off at 9am this Saturday. Admission and parking is free. his weekend the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) in Kahului will see a dream come to fruition in their very first ever La ‘Ulu–Breadfruit Day Festival, an all-day event dedicated to the dazzling abilities of this tree and the fruit it bears. The festival will run from 9am to 3pm and include guest speakers, Native Hawaiian arts and games, Hawaiian music, plants to purchase, exhibits and plenty of ‘ulu to taste. Whit Germano, the Program Manager at MNBG, says they created this event to show people what a wonderful plant this is, and why we should care about it. “Maui Nui Botanical Gardens hosted two very successful workshops called, “‘Ulu from Root to Fruit” in 2015 and 2016,” says Germano. “John Cadman of Maui Breadfruit Company knew that MNBG hosts large community events such as the Arbor Day 1,000 Hawaiian Tree Give-Away (since 2003), and the Hawaiian language immersion schools fundraiser Ho‘omau (since 2012). John suggested that we hold a festival to celebrate ‘ulu, and we decided this was the year. Also, we knew that Hana in East Maui has Kahanu Gardens and their beautiful ‘ulu varieties collection, which is a two-hour drive for those who live in Central Maui. We believe this event can expose a new audience to the possibilities of ‘ulu trees and their products, encourage people to visit Kahanu Gardens and plant more ‘ulu.” In historic texts there are many references to the ‘ulu. People truly depended on the bounty of the ‘ulu trees. “Long ago, ‘ulu plantations managed by complex Hawaiian hierarchies stretched from Lahaina to Wailuku,” says Germano. “This is expressed in the ‘olelo no‘eau ‘Halau Lahaina, malu i ka ‘ulu.’ Which translates into English as ‘Lahaina is like a large house shaded by breadfruit trees.’ Many people on Maui today have no idea how delicious and versatile this ancient Pacific staple can be. Thanks to people like John Cadman, owner of Maui Breadfruit Company and creator of Pono pies, ‘ulu is making a comeback.” Cadman and his Maui Breadfruit Company is one of the sponsors of the event. They’ll make and demonstrate their pit-fired and
rough kapa from the bark; creating a dye and sandpaper from the male flower parts; and a widely used adhesive from the latex.” It will be easy to get your hands working with the ‘ulu at the festival. ‘Ulu kapa making demonstrations with Lisa Schattenburg-Raymond and Lei Ishikawa will highlight just one of the art forms using this plant. SchattenburgRaymond is a Hawaiian ethnobotanist, kapa maker and fiber arts lecturer at University of Hawaii Maui College. Ishikawa also makes kapa and is a member of Paeloko, a private lot restoration and Hawaiian cultural site in Waihee. Together, they’ve hosted Hawaiian artisan workshops at MNBG on kapa making, native plant dyes, net making and ipu gourd decorating. The Native Hawaiian Plant Society will be on hand to lead participants in Native Hawaiian plant lei making. “The La ‘Ulu Festival is tied directly to MNBG’s mission of providing a gathering place for discovery, education and conservation,” says Germano. “Learning about a culture’s unique plants and foods is a doorway to meeting and learning from the people who live here. This event celebrates Hawaiian ingenuity utilizing plants, by demonstratroasted ‘ulu with coconut milk as well as ing how many products and materials can serve Pono Pies, vegetarian ‘ulu curry and be made from just one Hawaiian tree. This is because the fruit can be harvested and prepared in two ways. “‘Ulu is two different foods depending on ripeness,” says Germano. At the firm stage, it’s a starch that substitutes beautifully for potato. At the ripe stage, a sweet, creamy custard. Besides food, traditional uses include using fruits to feed pigs, dogs and fish; wood for poi boards and surfboards; making a

help propel the story along and not only act as narrators but as judgmental angels if you will or societies judgment on the events happening on stage. They are also like another instrument of the orchestra in that musically, they provide a great deal of the depth and texture of this wonderful music.” The live orchestra in the show is another element that propels the music in the storyline. “Another facet of my role as music director is the development of the orchestra which provides all of the texture and underpinning that moves the story along and helps express all of the living textures and emotions through background and supporting music that is played by this wonderful 18-piece orchestra,” says Leavitt. “My personal musical style is a collaborative one. I really enjoy the give-and-take between myself and the orchestra or myself and the performers as we explore and interpret music in new ways until we find something that is authentic, natural and organic for all of us and then I try to support that and be the facilitator. Ultimately, once the show is ready to launch I become in many ways the de facto life line between the show happening on stage and the orchestra–since, by this point, the directors have done all they can do. So during the performance, I’m really the only connection that the performers have to what’s going on. Therefore, it’s my responsibility to give them all the support they need in order to help them maintain their level of excellence and to help them move the show along.” Part of Leavitt’s style is to develop the main characters’ emotional connection to their songs. “When I work with the principal characters I try to spend a lot of time with them initially exploring the emotional connection and the emotional intention they have with each song that they’re going to present,” he says. “Then we sing through the music just so they learn the notes and once they are comfortable with that then we begin to explore how to layer those emotions and intentions that they’ve discovered in their personal work using their
Frollo judges everything through the lens of his position in the church. His mission of holiness and salvation. He shows complete judgement and criticism of everyone and everything. He’s ensconced in a world of blind ambition and misconception.” The underlying themes and meanings from this play will be interpreted by each individual’s experience, but Leavitt believes the music will have the power to inspire the audience. “I find that the biggest thing I get from the music and the show is this undercurrent of hope and love and this feeling that no matter where we are in the world, things will get better,” says Leavitt. “I hope that’s what people will take away from this amazing experience.” To buy tickets call 808-242-7469 or go to Mauiarts.org/mapa. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E stories, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

ou wouldn’t call someone a “hunchback” these days, much less the “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” But Victor Hugo’s story is set in a dark period in history–Paris of 1482, to be exact. Now Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) will showcase this romantic, doomed love story starting this Friday the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. It stars David Tuttle as the deformed Quasimodo and Danielle Delauney as the vivacious Esmeralda. Much of the play is told through the beautiful Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz score from the Disney movie that was nominated for an Oscar in 1997. That places a great deal of responsibility on Gary Leavitt, the show’s music director. “The music in the show is wonderful in that it carries the story along on its back in the most delightful way,” says Leavitt. “In some ways the music is almost Wagnerian, in that all of the main characters have their own theme music if you will, so it helps you identify when you hear certain themes in the music something is happening with this character or that character. The music is still light and nimble, so it helps keep the story moving along without weighing it down, it never really gets in the way it only enhances the experience. It’s also extremely fortunate that the music for the show was written by the same folks who wrote the music for the Disney film so people who have seen the film will recognize all of their favorite songs and then notice all the music is still cohesive because it was written by the same people, so there’s just an extension of the beautiful music that was already in place.” The choir that looms on stage and accompanies the scenes, is something new we will see from Director David Johnston. “It’s an unusual feature of this show to have an on stage Chorus separate from the ensemble,” says Leavitt. “They’re installed as part of the set almost as if they were a living part of the set. They function in many ways like a traditional Greek chorus in that they
unique musical abilities. That, I believe, is my greatest contribution to the principals in developing their characters is to give them the tools musically that they need to carry out the intentions and emotions they are trying to express through their song.” Gothic architecture was important to the theme of Victor Hugo’s book. Hugo made long descriptions of the gargoyles, stained glass and beautiful buildings in Paris. I asked Set Designer James Tait how this played out in what we’ll see on stage. “While Victor Hugo’s book is very focused on the Old World architecture of Notre Dame, I wanted to break the audience’s’ expectations of what they were coming to see,” says Tait. “We focused on the building and its architecture, not as the finished icon we all recognize, but as a work in progress–in growth; being built, repaired and supported by our moving set elements. It was important to create a world for Quasimodo where his physical deformities were actually an advantage, whereas everyone else were limited just as he was in their world. This led to a sort of jungle-gym-meets-construction-site look with a number of ropes, beams, handholds, moving platforms and levels for the actors to play on.” Tuttle’s athletic and energetic Quasimodo will be a highlight in the production. Tait also assures me that we will see plenty of bells and gargoyles. Will Kimball, who played Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde in last year’s production, comes back as the complicated villain Claude Frollo. “He feels he is righteous and justified in his crusade to rid Paris of the Gypsies,” says Kimball. “Creating this character has been a challenge in balancing the elements of Frollo’s duality. His love of the church and his obsession with Esmerelda. Frollo is fraught with contradictions. He is ruthless yet he truly cares and loves Quasimodo. He is lustful, yet he has potential for tenderness. He is a complex and a layered villain.

TALKING STORY WITH TONY VALENTINE ABOUT HIS UPCOMING GIRLS NIGHT OUT SHOW
Nice shorts!
I
f you’ve seen Magic Mike, then you have a good idea of what kind of fun the ladies will have at Tony Valentine’s Girls Night Out event (Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Iao Theater). The concept of putting tantalizing male burlesque dancers onstage started in Los Angeles in 1978 with the opening of Chippendale’s. That led to an international phenomenon with several independent touring shows around the globe. Now, former Chippendale’s dancer Tony Valentine is featuring a new show here on Maui, so we caught up with him between dancing gigs across the continent to find out what the audience should expect. MAUITIME: What do you have in store for the ladies this year? TONY VALENTINE: An unforgettable evening of fun, excitement, passion, romance, with a little Fifty Shades Of Sex, because we plan on coming back next year! MT: What makes your show unique from other male burlesque acts? TV: My dancers treat the women like queens. They love giving them the show they want to see and remember for a lifetime. MT: So what does Chippendales mean, for those who aren’t familiar? TV: Fun fact: Chippendales actually refers to 16th century English-made furniture. It was the furniture in the original club. Chippendales first started in 1978 in Los Angeles California on Overland Avenue. The second club opened in New York City on 61st & 1st Ave and it was called Club Misuse. MT: How does Magic Mike play a part in your show? TV: Channing Tatum did an individual solo act in the movie. We do the same number with all five guys called “The Grinder.” With both Magic Mike movies, Fifty Shades Of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker, women want the thrill that they’ve seen on the big screen and read about. We bring that to life when we give them the interaction with the men on stage. They can actually be right in the center, getting all the attention, not just sitting at home daydreaming about the excitement it can bring to their lives. It’s Disney World for wom-
en! It’s their time to let the hair down, get out, get crazy for one night of the year. MT:Do you dance in your show? TV: Of course I do! MT: Will you get any free time to play while you’re on Maui? TV: We did a show at the Iao Theater two years ago and we sold out. We had a blast partying with the ladies all night. This year again, after the show, there will be a Meet & Greet after-party at Bistro Casanova and we’ll party all night again. This is our play time, giving the beautiful women of Maui a show of a lifetime just like we did two years ago. MT:Where are you headed next? TV: Molokai and Oahu. MT: Lucky ladies of Molokai! Where has your show toured before coming to Hawaii? TV: We perform all over the US, as well as Europe, Asia, all over South America, as well as cruise ships. MT: How many dancers are in the show and where are you from? TV: There are six dancers and they’re from around the country. We have dancers from Las Vegas, Nevada, New York City, Cincinnati, Dallas, Miami and Chicago. MT: How do you train to be a male dancer? What advice would you give to aspiring male dancers on Maui? TV: We get our training hands-on! Lots of experience as we perform over 200 shows a year. For aspiring dancers, you have to stay in the gym. Stay up to date with music and new dance moves. Ask your customers what they want and like.

'Logan Lucky' Steven Soderbergh’s NASCAR heist comedy never gets going ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 119 Min.
S
teven Soderbergh’s new comedy stars Channing Tatum as Jimmy Logan, a lifelong underachiever who decides to perform a heist during a NASCAR race. Jimmy enlists the aid of unlikely cohorts, including his brother Clyde (Adam Driver), a local bartender and amputee. There’s also the incarcerated Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) and a few other country bumpkins who get involved in Jimmy’s high-stakes robbery, which bears a resemblance to the kind of larger-than-life criminal performance art you’d expect from Danny Ocean. In fact, late into Logan Lucky, someone even deems the redneck criminals “Ocean’s 7-Eleven,” a cute touch, since Soderbergh is the mastermind behind those George Clooney-led flicks. However, even Ocean’s 12, the gaseous, self-indulgent second installment, had real laughs. Logan Lucky has a droll, detached, too-cool-for-school attitude that it never earns. The screenplay (credited to newcomer Rebecca Blunt but widely suspected to be
penned by Soderbergh) is overwritten yet flimsy and never picks up much momentum. As a comedy, this is one of the flimsiest in Soderbergh’s remarkable body of work. Amusing malapropisms and goofy accents aside, the jokes here are light and widely scattered. The height of the film’s wit is to note George R.R. Martin’s erratic publishing schedule and that “Umbrella” is about Rihanna’s vagina. A good, committed cast keeps this watchable but, aside from what they achieved working with a dialect coach, there are no career milestones here. Craig’s yankee accent is especially impressive but his wacky tough guy performance doesn’t elevate the movie like it should. Tatum is quite good, though the character isn’t far removed from Magic Mike (you half-expect Jimmy to try stripping if the whole NASCAR heist thing goes badly). Driver is always solid, though the good work of Katie Holmes, Seth MacFarlane (sporting the best of the accents) and Dwight Yoakam is undermined by the fact their characters are drawn so thinly. Soderbergh’s last two movies were the terrific Side Effects (which co-starred Tatum) and the celebrated TV movie Behind the Candelabra, which starred
Less talking, more robbing
Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. This is Soderbergh’s first film after declaring he “retired” from filmmaking, during which he gave us highly influential independent films (Sex, Lies and Videotape, Traffic and Bubble), hugely popular mainstream hits (the Ocean’s trilogy, Magic Mike, Out of Sight, Erin Brockovich and Contagion) and works so deliciously odd (Kafka, Solaris and The Girlfriend Experience) that they’ve garnered a deserved cult following. I’m a fan of Soderbergh and want him to keep making great movies but Logan Lucky is to that filmography what a Slim Jim is to a steak. If anyone steals the movie outright, it’s little Farrah Mackenzie, playing Jimmy’s adorable daughter Sadie. She’s the focus of the film’s best scene (set during a children’s beauty pageant) but the sentimentality overall feels forced. So do the post-heist se-
quences, in which Hilary Swank is brought in late as a Special Agent investigating the Logan brothers. These scenes go nowhere and only waste the talented Swank. Despite the NASCAR angle and a Jeff Gordon appearance, the setting is woefully underutilized. Don’t expect a racing movie–even Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby has more raceway footage (and is a lot funnier). I’m hoping Soderbergh leap frogs over this movie (more of a creative speed bump than a curse) and shapes a worthier comeback. We need Soderbergh, whose declaration of a retirement came as a shock. In this age of corporate cinema, talentless movie producers calling the shots and most mainstream films saddled with the need to build either a franchise or a freakin “universe,” we need a wildcard like Soderbergh more than ever. ■

Sign Language VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
A vegan Virgo friend finished a round-the-world trip and discovered she was host to several insect larvae, worms coiled beneath her skin, slowly turning into winged insects. To get rid of them, she had to coat the area in pig lard, which would compel the worms to poke their heads out, at which point they could be tugged free. Her revulsion for the parasitic larvae easily outweighed her powerful distaste for pig lard. To get rid of the undesirables living under your skin, you may also have to overcome your own personal tastes and do things you find repulsive.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
A lot of life is accidental, isn’t it? We navigate through our existences with the best of intentions, but only a fraction of those actually sees fruition. The rest of life is the stuff that happens to us that we can’t predict, or things we do without thinking or meaning to. Obviously, you can’t completely control your life. But I reckon you could exert a tiny bit more influence on which directions it takes. Forty-nine percent of your life may always be made up of things you can’t control or anticipate, but this week, do what you need to do to ensure that 51 percent of it is composed of things you consciously choose.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
You’re not exactly suffering through a jail sentence, though it may feel like that at times. Luckily, like most prison terms, this situation has an end date, too. Though the date of your release may feel like it’s eons away, have faith that it will come, and that you’re drawing closer to it every day. Also, bear in mind that just like many sentences of imprisonment, this unpleasant situation can be shortened dramatically by exhibiting extremely good behavior. And if it’s really unbearable, consider this: a prison break is always possible. Just be sure you take into account the potential consequences. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
If the zodiac formed a royal court, Leos would of course be the kings and queens, Capricorns the powerful Machiavellian advisors, Aries the royal jesters, and Scorpios would be the most powerful of all: the royal consorts. The most frantic string-pulling of those Capricorn puppet-masters can’t compare to your whispered pillow talk, so there’s no reason to feel threatened or jealous, or compete for the kinds of power others control. You’ve got your own brand of might and influence, and it’s just as effective (or more so) than the kinds wielded by everyone else (and, despite the bit about pillow-talk, it’s not all about sex).
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You’re not especially known for your wise investments. Usually, you spend money fairly whimsically when you have it, and suffer through the hard times when you’re less flush. It’d be nice if you had a bit more balance in your personal budget, but that might come at the expense of some of the playfulness that makes you who you are. Continuing as you have been is certainly a viable option, but if there’s some reason to change your relationship to money (if someone you love desperately wants you to, for example) this is a good week to do it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
You occasionally resist change simply out of habit. Sometimes you dig in your heels so hard that you actually keep things more or less as they are, out of sheer stubbornness. Once in a while, you may regret this. Not all change is bad, despite your usual initial reaction to it. Once in a while, a big change could be an extremely good thing. That’s likely to be the case this week. If change comes, do all you can to embrace it, even though it may fill you with anxiety and frustration at first. Rejecting it would be something you would kick yourself for, later.
VOTED BEST
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Sagittarians are typically solo adventurers, but I think you’re truly at your best when you hitch your wagon to someone else’s. When your worldview expands to include others, you grow and excel in ways you couldn’t even imagine before. Whatever it is that inspires you to include others in your exploits (common reasons include falling in love or having kids), I’m excited for you. You’d never otherwise know just how incredibly creative and resourceful you can actually be. It may be easier to go it solo, but life’s richer when you’re part of a team. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Who gives a word its meaning, ultimately? Those who write dictionaries, or those who use the words in them? Most likely it’s a kind of mass-scale collaboration, in which both influence the other, back and forth. How a tool is used is just as important as what it was originally intended for. Don’t let anyone else completely define for you what something is, how it’s to be used, or what role it’s supposed to play in your life. You’ve got the power to change every facet of your existence, from words to tools to your relationships with other people. The best part is you won’t just be changing them for yourself–everyone is likely to benefit from your new definitions.
Being bombarded with as much information as you typically take in is fine most of the time, but bad for your soul and general morale in the long-term. It’s important to periodically take a media and technology diet. Spare a week (this week, or one of the next three) from your life in which your cell phone stays off, and you shun any technology more advanced than a fridge or a light bulb. Take yourself to a past century, and enjoy only the news you hear from your neighbors. Read. Hang out with people who are actually in the room with you. I predict the first few days of your media diet will be a struggle, but by the end of your week away from the insanity you’ll be vowing to repeat the experience, every year. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Family is important to you, of course, but is your definition of family broad enough? Limiting it to people who are related to you by blood or marriage would severely impoverish your life. Who are the people who’ve been there for you, and will be? They’re your family. Your blood relatives might be assholes, after all. Who are the people you’ll helplessly love forever? Those people are your family, whether or not they share your name or genes. This week, make sure they know it, and this year, remodel your life so it truly reflects it. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
We’re probably too selfish, in general, to do what has to be done–for our planet, for humanity, and for all the other species we share Earth with. We all know the kind of danger we’re in, but we’re only willing to go so far, in terms of compromising our lifestyles, even when it means the difference between saving and dooming ourselves. You’re just as guilty as most of the rest of us; in this case you know what needs to be done, and exactly how far you personally have to go, in order to be effective at all. This week, please decide: will you go that far? If not, don’t bother going anywhere at all. There’s no point.
You’re making the wrong wishes, Leo. How do I know? It’s because every time one of your desires is fulfilled, you’re still dissatisfied. That’s because many of your dreams and wants have been thrust upon you–by clever advertisements, compelling lovers, or other circumstances. Some of them have even completely eclipsed the things you actually want. It may be a noble and mostly good idea to embrace the things your lover or boss wants for you—but not so completely that you forget your own wishes and fantasies. This week, make sure your heart’s true desires get the same time and attention you give to your adopted goals. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
