HATES HONEST HISTORY This is so absurd and ignorant (Coconut Wireless–"Nice to see Hawaii taking up the fight against white supremacist statues,” Aug. 24, 2017). First, McKinley served all four years of the Civil War. He’s no Robert E. Lee. Second, Spain declared war on THE UNITED STATES, over his objections and efforts for peace. Third, he did not “take over” Cuba and the Philippines, or they wouldn’t be selfgoverning nations today. As for Hawaii, were we supposed to let it and the other Pacific territories fall into the hands of the brutal, racist Japanese who allied with the Nazis in the Second World War? There were simply no good options for dealing with the war thrust upon him by the Spanish–who, since you’re racist and see only color, were Hispanic. -John Hay, via MauiTime.com
The Editor responds: Somehow, everything you stated in your comment is wrong. William McKinley’s civil war record is irrelevant–his actions as U.S. President were imperialist and white supremacist, and therefore should disqualify him from getting honored with a statue. Second, the Spanish-American War started when the U.S. declared war on Spain. Third, though Cuba became an independent nation in 1902, the Philippines were a U.S. colony from the end of the war until 1946. Fourth, your defense of McKinley’s decision to take over Hawaii is itself imperialist, and based on the racist notion that the Hawaiians could not govern themselves.

HATED ARTICLE Isn’t it great that we can have freedom of speech in America created by a bunch of white guys through our constitution. That also can include a bias[ed] opinion not based on facts! Terrible article... want to be honest like you say? You are very bias[ed] and racist towards one race called whites and also to the president! Racism comes in all colors so be honest with yourself like you said to your readers and the blame isn’t on one race. [By the way] I’m not white and I’m not black, I’m honest to call it like it is and my opinion to you is you sound very racist and your article is bias[ed]. What ever happened to real journalism because this is a bunch [of] crap that you put out. Can you respect my freedom of speech? -Stan, via email
LOVED ARTICLE I am Asian American, new resident of Maui of three years, grew up in Washington, DC mostly. This is the first time I’ve felt somewhat a majority (at least not a minority)... and it feels strange, but in a positive way. Maybe this is just Hawaii and everyone gets friendly treatment and benefit of the doubt, but I’ve experienced these small benefits more often here than anywhere else I’ve lived. Maybe this is what “majority privilege” feels like? My adult kids are hapa. My husband is white. We have these discussions all the time. Your column was right on. I hope many folks read it, think about it, discuss it and admit it can be a challenge as white liberals to really believe they are privileged. It means more when whites say these things to other whites. It’s like the air we breathe. We assume everyone else breathes the same air but if others choke, it must be something about them and not the air. -Sookie Kunst, via email

vigorously defend the State’s interest in this suit. While HDOT cannot comment on the specific allegations in an active lawsuit, it does want to reaffirm its commitment to operate its facilities in manners which are protective of all sensitive species and are consistent with legal requirements.”
BIG CHANGE OVER AT HPR Beth-Ann Kozlovich, who has hosted the public affairs forum Town Square on Hawaii Public Radio (HPR) since 1999, has left the nonprofit station to take a job at the health center Kahi Mohala on Oahu, the station announced on Aug. 25,

Sometimes I’m amazed that any animals manage to survive in this monstrous machine called “civilization” that we humans have built for ourselves. Even constructions that seem completely innocent can wreak havoc on the other, less “evolved” species. I thought of all this last week when I got a news release from the environmental law firm Earthjustice announcing a new lawsuit from a coalition of Hawaii organizations against the state Department of Transportation (DOT). The reason for the suit? The department’s failure “to address injuries and deaths of three species of critically imperiled seabirds caused by bright lighting at stateoperated airports and harbors on Kauai, Maui and Lanai,” according to the lawsuit. The groups represented by Earthjustice– Hui Ho‘omalu i Ka ‘Aina, Conservation Council for Hawai‘i and the Center for Biological Diversity–assert that the threatened species Newell’s shearwater and the endangered species Hawaiian petrels and band-rumped storm petrels are all at risk from the bright lights at Hawaii’s harbors and airports. “The seabirds are attracted to bright lights, like those at the department’s airport and harbor facilities,” states the news release. “Indeed, those facilities are among the largest documented sources in the state of injury and death to the birds. The seabirds become disoriented and circle the lights until they fall to the ground from exhaustion or crash into nearby buildings.” According to Earthjustice, last October the state DOT “abruptly broke off discussions with federal and state wildlife agencies regarding its participation in an island-wide habitat conservation plan to minimize and mitigate harm to the rare seabirds on Kauai.” Now the groups want the DOT “to comply with its obligations under the Endangered Species Act to minimize and mitigate harm to the imperiled seabirds by securing incremental take permit coverage of its activities on all three islands,” according to the news release.
Put simply, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 prohibits activities that “take” (harass, injure or kill) endangered species. Given that some activities will inevitably harm species, organizations like the DOT can first obtain an “incidental take permit” from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, but such permits place various restrictions on the activity. The groups filing the suit allege that the Hawaii DOT never did this. “The tragic deaths of these endangered seabirds were preventable,” said Brian Segee, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, in the Aug. 23 news release. “The Department of Transportation can’t keep ignoring the Endangered Species Act. The department needs to do right by these amazing birds and improve conditions on the ground to offset the real harm caused over the years by these very bright lights.” For its part, the DOT denies that it’s done anything wrong. Indeed, though DOT officials refused to comment on the specifics of the lawsuit, they did release a rather long statement to the press on Aug. 24: “The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is tasked with the essential role of ensuring safe transportation facilities for the citizens of Hawaii as well as the millions of visitors to the Islands each year,” says the DOT statement. “HDOT also plays another critical role–that of a trustee of the State’s environmental resources
which requires it to conserve and maintain natural resources for the benefit of all the citizens of the State. HDOT takes both of these responsibilities extremely seriously and always seeks to identify ways to improve management of its facilities for the benefit of natural resources while maintaining safe operations. “In the past several years, HDOT has proactively evaluated ways that its facilities can be operated in a manner that is most protective of all of the Islands’ sensitive resources, including threatened and endangered seabirds and other species. For example, HDOT recently expended hundreds of millions of dollars to install energy efficient lighting improvements at the State airports and commercial harbors to avoid impacts to sensitive species on the Islands as well as millions of dollars to safely translocate the endangered Nene away from airport facilities. HDOT has been and continues to be actively engaged with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency charged with overseeing implementation of the federal Endangered Species Act, to ensure that the facilities are operated in ways that are consistent with federal laws and policies. HDOT has also been open to meeting with environmental groups and other interested parties to explore effective ways of further benefiting listed and sensitive species. “Given its steadfast commitment to protecting Hawaii’s listed species, HDOT was disappointed to learn today that Earthjustice filed a lawsuit alleging that state-operated airports and harbors on Kauai, Maui and Lanai have resulted in unauthorized take of federally listed seabirds. HDOT will

peachment originates from the House [of Representatives],” which is presently controlled by Republicans. But in responding to a question about expanding the tax credit for parents sending their children to college, Schatz clearly struck a chord with the audience. “Tens of millions of dollars are going to for-profit, online institutions and they are not graduating more than 10 percent of their kids, and most kids who graduate have a degree they will soon find to be worthless,” Schatz said. ‘There are colleges that pulled in between two and two and a half billion dollars from the federal government and their graduation rate is three percent.” Schatz argued that federal spending on student financial aid was the highest it’s ever been, and that the problem lay in delivery to institutions that simply negated the rise in aid by raising the cost of tuition. The problem, Schatz said, isn’t access but acceptable cost. -Max Errickson

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, held a town hall meeting at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the Binhi At Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului. About 150 people showed up, including Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa and Councilmembers Stacy Crivello and Kelly King. The air was humid with only an occasional breeze when Schatz stepped forward to the microphone. Before he even opened his mouth everyone there stood and gave a thunderous applause. The town hall lasted about 90 minutes. People asked about climate change, North Korea, possible federal spending cuts, the potential for impeaching President Donald Trump and college tax credits. On the issue of the Republicans’ failed attempts at repealing the Affordable Care Act, Schatz was happy to say that after the final vote, “nobody’s afraid of President Trump anymore.” Councilmember King asked about the proposed budget cuts that have been put forward by White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnunchin. “Despite Mick Mulvaney’s budget proposals, all of them were ignored,” Schatz said. “I will tell you just as an example, Mulvaney proposed massive cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health. Not only did we not implement those cuts, but we raised funding for the CDC and NIH.”
This drew considerable applause. Schatz then explained that the proper way to cut any major government programs requires a slow process of communication and interagency cooperation before demanding specific cuts. Instead, Schatz explained, Mulvaney and Mnunchin simply outlined their wish list of cuts and sent it to Congress. On the subject of North Korea and possible future conflicts, Schatz said that North Korea would probably produce a working Intercontinental Ballistic Missile sooner rather than later. “The problem is we are no longer talking about decades away,” he said. “If everything goes right for them [North Korea], we are talking about years.” Schatz did add that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (whom Schatz voted against in January), was pursuing diplomacy in an aggressive manner using NGOs (non-government organizations), possibly the first steps to a stable resolution to the current situation. Schatz also said China would most likely not intervene in the situation in favor of the United States. “They are not going to do our foreign policy for us,” he said. Instead, Schatz said, the U.S. must pursue both diplomacy well as a strengthening of missile defenses around Hawaii. It wasn’t a surprise when a resident asked Schatz for his thoughts on the U.S. Constitution’s 25th Amendment, which lays out a procedure for removing the president when he’s “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” Schatz quickly insisted that “im-
JERSEY MIKE’S SUBS OPENS IN WAILUKU WITH FUNDRAISER
“We are very excited to be opening our second Hawaii store in Maui,” said Garcia. “At Jersey Mike’s our fundraising partnerships create a layer of sustainability for schools, youth sports leagues, and other nonprofits in and around our city. These partnerships allow us to truly become members of our community by allowing us to contribute to the success of our youth and our city. Our crew, city officials, and residents have a high level of respect for us for that reason. We honestly feel that we are changing the world one sub at a time.” Garcia shares Jersey Mike’s commitment to quality products and exceptional customer service, and to giving back to the local community. Since 2010, Jersey Mike’s locations throughout the country have raised nearly $25 million for worthy local charities and have distributed more than 1.5 million free sub sandwiches to help numerous causes. This year, the company’s seventh annual Jersey Mike’s Month of Giving in March raised more than $5.5 million for nearly 150 charities throughout the country. Jersey Mike’s, a fast-casual sub sandwich franchise, opened in 1956. It currently has more than 1,500 locations open and under development nationwide. This year, Jersey Mike’s was named the country’s fastest-growing Limited Service Chain and fastestgrowing sandwich chain in the 2017 Nation’s Restaurant News Top 100. BRIGHT IDEAS Alana Nicole Donahue, 27, of Springfield, Oregon, just wanted to entertain her children and nephew with a joy ride around the neighborhood. But on July 12, as she pulled the kids (ages 2, 4 and 8) behind her Ford Taurus in a plastic red wagon, she was arrested for reckless endangerment. Donahue told police she was just “showing the kids a good time.” However, horrified witnesses saw the car going about 30 mph as the wagon went up on two wheels going around a busy traffic circle at rush hour.

Mummies, Emojis and a Talking Tree Your MauiTime 2017 summer movie wrap-up thew McConaughey keep it lively. Hopefully, a much-longer Director’s Cut will redeem this guilty pleasure later on.
Films with Baby Groot are good
A
baffling summer at the movies started strong, until the good choices were too widely dispersed over the course of four months. The bad movies were in such abundance, audiences managed to wisely put their foot down and voted with their pocketbook. Instead of saying, “Oh, why not, I saw the other four....,” filmgoers actually said no to Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight. It felt like a triumph for good taste, until I discovered that Bumblebee, a spin-off no one asked for, is in the works. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Despicable Me 3 and Cars 3 were also box office under-performers, an indication that audiences won’t pay for sequels no one was begging for. The movies that found adoration were an unpredictable lot: film buffs said yay to Girls Trip and nay to Rough Night. Thumbs up for Mandy Moore getting terrorized by a shark but thumbs down for Will Ferrell and Amy Pohler. Smiley-faced emoji for The Hitman’s Bodyguard but a poop emoji for The Emoji Movie (ah, cruel irony, most fair and true!). Then there was Baywatch , a seemingly can’t-miss product that was tossed into the ocean without any hope of resuscitation. You know something went horribly wrong when Dwayne Johnson, an ensemble of hotties and 90 minutes of jokes seemingly written by 13-year old boys couldn’t win over a summer movie audience. Not enough art house-loving filmgoers turned out for Sophia Coppola’s shocking The Beguiled, the acclaimed The Big Sick or The Glass Castle by Maui’s own Destin Daniel Cretton. The upside is, at least we won’t have The Emoji Sequel or a spin-off Poop Emoji’s First Movie anytime soon. Here’s how the rest panned out.
Winners Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, succeeded by giving audiences what they wanted: planet-sized laughs, eye popping visual effects and lots of Baby Groot. James Gunn’s farce made coming up with a great sequel to the biggest hit of 2014 look easy. Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant appeared to be giving fans what they wanted: chests bursting, guns blazing and Xenomorphs Gone Wild. Instead, Scott defied expectations and made one of the strangest films of his career. Sci-fi fans will continue to draw lines in the sand over this, which is every bit as crazy, ambitious and rich with ideas as Scott’s divisive Prometheus. Good for him. Then came War For the Planet of the Apes, the best film of the summer. It pushed the technological breakthroughs and political allegories of the franchise even further. Yet, that latter quality is also the likely culprit why audiences mostly walked away after opening weekend. I guess everyone was tired of hearing “We’re gonna build a wall,” even when it came from Woody Harrelson’s Colonel and not the other guy. Annabelle: Creation arrived late in the season and was just the horror film audiences were looking for. Those holding out for the torn flesh and tortured screams of Jigsaw had to put up with thick suspense, electrifying frights and old school storytelling. Clearly, The Conjuring universe is worth visiting. Another nice surprise was Atomic Blonde, one of the year’s most underappreciated comic book movies. The Dark Tower was a victim of studio-tinkering, but don’t let the 88-minute running time, PG-13 rating and absurdly crammed screenplay fool you. Yes, it’s a mess, but much of it works and Idris Elba and Mat-
Good but Overrated Wonder Woman is the biggest hit of the summer, a well-deserved success. Director Patty Jenkins achieved what seemed impossible- making a really good movie about a character who was famously difficult to adapt on film. Over time, we’ll be able to discuss how those last 20 minutes are terrible and that Gal Gadot’s acting abilities are a work in progress. For now, let’s celebrate the win: the movie works. I fell in love with the filmmaking in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but the movie itself (with its detached, multinarrative construction and muted performances) left me cold. Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver started strong, revving its creative engine as exhilarating imagery and a winning mix-tape of tunes sped by. Near the end, Wright’s film forgot it was a homage, tried to become a real deal, bloody-violent car chase action movie and got stuck in a speed trap. Letdowns Audiences by and large loved SpiderMan: Homecoming but I couldn’t get around star Tom Holland’s shrill, overlycaffeinated and inexperienced performance as the new Spidey. Michael Keaton’s nifty villain and a great, last-minute surprise twist helped but not enough. I miss the personality that filmmaker Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield brought to the webslinger. Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is glorious for about 20 minutes then fatally nose dives, even before Rihanna shows up as a mighty-morphin,’ blobby blue alien. Had Besson cast two leads with genuine chemistry, this
could have been another Fifth Element. The too-cool-for-school Logan Lucky was deemed “Ocean’s 7/11” by someone in the movie, which is wishful thinking. It Comes At Night was a would-be art house hit that didn’t live up to its hype as Horror’s Next Big Thing and delivered overly familiar clichés. Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, by far the biggest disappointment of the summer, captured the bloodshed of the 1967 riots but offered no insight. Bigelow’s attempt at making a timely, painful examination of police brutality and a legacy of racism felt redundant in light of recent events. Losers All Eyez On Me turned the remarkable life of Tupac Shakur into a half-baked, TV-movie ready promo for Death Row Records. A bigger surprise was the stench of Snatched, in which an alarmingly unfunny Amy Schumer and a still-funny Goldie Hawn had to carry a premise that wasn’t remotely comedic. Schumer’s Trainwreck was a winner but her latest is a major step backward. An intended franchise-building failure was Guy Ritchie’s irritating King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. A brawny, aggressive style gave creative juice to Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes but not Camelot. Ritchie’s disaster is this year’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Tom Cruise has never made anything quite like The Mummy, a shockingly bad attempt to build Universal Studios’ “Dark Universe.” Memo to Hollywood: Rather than worry about franchise-building and mimicking the unmatchable success of Marvel Studios, perhaps rival studios should focus making a single, solitary great movie? Next time, forget about building a “universe” and just make one movie that matters. ■
Films without Baby Groot? Not so much.

Horoscope
Sign Language VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
One of my favorite Virgos was born on Sept. 11, decades before it became infamous in 2001. For a long while, her birthday was completely eclipsed. She couldn’t exactly change it, but you should do what you can to escape whatever’s keeping you for from having a special day of your own. Virgos suck at taking time for themselves, and you’re so unstintingly generous that it’s hard for us to get a good deed in edgewise. Let us give you a day (at least) that’s devoted to your happiness and wellbeing. A birthday is a convenient and familiar excuse to do just that, so make sure (by whatever means) yours falls on a day when nothing else will get in the way. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
You haven’t lost your game, though it may feel like it. It’s just that astrological influences are working against even your most tried-and-true techniques for charming people and getting things done. Luckily, that stuff should shift by the end of this week, and all your old tricks should start working again (assuming they ever did)–if, that is, you haven’t let self-doubt settle in under your skin. That would botch all your best-laid plans far more effectively than any measly astrological forces ever could.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Sometimes being sick isn’t such a bad thing. Having a cold, for instance, can be an excuse to wallow in bed, play hooky from work, and do the things you really want to do, guilt-free. Some Pisces even make themselves sick simply to acquire such an excuse. This, however, shouldn’t be necessary. Being a Pisces should be excuse enough. You simply need occasional periods of intense downtime, and you shouldn’t have to make yourself physically ill to get them. Do what you’ve got to do to get what you need, but surely there’s a way without resorting to such extreme measures. This week, see if you can find it.
QUIZ understood
ANSWERS
...to questions from page 5
1: D–72 2: B–U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono 3: C–185 years
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You can’t quantify love, and asking those who care about you to do so just isn’t fair. I know sometimes you simply want some kind of proof that people really give a shit, but pushing them to extremes so they’ll “prove it” is a terrible idea. Asking for sacrifices as demonstration of fidelity was petty and horrible even when the Old Testament God did it; how much better do you think it would make you look? Loads of love is about trust and faith, and if you really require proof of that, consider the possibility that maybe you’re simply looking for love in the wrong places.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
According to Biblical Apocrypha, the Grigori were angels who rebelled against God. They had sex with humans (giving birth to giants called Nephilim) and taught people all the stuff that God wanted kept secret from them, like the arts of cosmetics and war. I understand why God might have wanted to keep his children innocent forever, but every kid needs a rebellious big brother or wild aunt who’ll teach him to smoke pot and listen to decent music. Some of you Scorpios, like the Old Testament God, can sometimes be a bit jealous regarding your partners, children and even friends, and resent it when they’re exposed to things you don’t approve of. It is, however, inevitable. Resisting it will only lead to more rebellion. I suggest that even if you can’t exactly support and enable this kind of thing, at least get out of the way. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
People who are able to perform prodigious feats of memory are occasionally simply quite gifted, but more often have simply mastered intelligent tricks that help their brains better retain long strings of information. You’ve relied on your natural talents more often than is wise, so you’ve failed to develop the kinds of skills that help less gifted people keep up. Imagine how much you could accomplish if you picked up a few of those kinds of tricks, ones that might magnify or build upon the talents you’ve already got. This week, see if you can learn a few. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Most of the people you know respect you. Most of them probably like you, too, but how many of them know you like them? How many actually feel close to you? I know you’re a private (and busy) person, but do yourself (and the rest of us) a kindness and open up a little this week, would you? It’s not necessary for success, nor even, necessarily, for your happiness (though I’d bet it’d make your life feel richer). However, can you deny that it would raise the sum total of joy in the lives of those around you? I think it would, and there’s no good reason to deny them that, is there? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
What if children were taught to truly value difference, creativity, and independent thought? They are, superficially, but the underlying lessons they learn are more about conformity and toeing the line (Remember: “Which of these things is not like the other? Which of these things does not belong?”). Imagine how great it might be if both cooperation and extreme individuality were widely encouraged and celebrated, rather than an emphasis being placed on “fitting in.” “Normal” and “average” are boring. This week, do what you can to make sure the extraordinary and unusual get the kind of validation they deserve.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
True courage is doing whatever’s right regardless of whether anyone will know about it. True generosity is the same; giving a gift with an expectation of anything– even a thank you–isn’t quite as altruistic as giving one anonymously, so the beneficiary would never even know where it came from. How well-rooted are your principles? Studies about altruism show that for most people doing what’s right often depends on whether or not other people will know about or acknowledge it. This week, try to do the right thing in a way that takes social factors out of the equation. Make praise, recognition, and appreciation irrelevant. Now what will you do?
VOTED BEST
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
It’s one thing to live in the moment, Gemini, but it’s another thing to fail to prepare for your own future. I don’t even mean specifics, necessarily; I mean that some of you are in denial about one of life’s basic truths: everything changes. You won’t be able to continue on as you have indefinitely, whether it comes to your sex or love life, your job, your looks. Even your habits will have to change. A smart Gemini plans for this. They give themselves some options. Have you done the same for yourself? If not, devote this week to coming up with some good ones.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
You’ve heard of taking things one day at a time. Sometimes, though, even that’s too much. You might have to resort to taking things one minute at a time, or even one second at a time. Concentrate on visualizing yourself on the other side of whatever miserable mud-pit your find yourself in, and just slog through it without looking too closely at just how much misery lies between you and that distant end-point. How much can you handle? A second? A minute? Then take that on, and worry about the next minute when you have to. Eventually, you will get to the other side. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I used to read three to five books a week, but in recent years, I’ve slowed down, so now I only read three to five books a month. I miss it, especially since my book-buying habits haven’t slowed down as much as my reading habits; I now have a towering stack of books waiting to be read. Your mental habits or proclivities have also recently diverged from what you actually do in real life. Whether it’s a stack of unused condoms, unanswered emails or unread books that’s starting to haunt you, a change is necessary. Maybe you need to make room for your old habits, or else acknowledge that other things have really and truly shown up to take their place. Either way, see what you can do this week to bring your real life back into synch with your mental one. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
