ELLE COCHRAN ANNOUNCES MAYORAL CAMPAIGN
• Introduced Legislation Regulating Oxybenzone • Banned Polystyrene • Introduced Legislation to Further Restrict Plastic Bag Usage in Maui County • Introduced a Resolution to Prohibit the Sale and Trade of Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn in Hawaii • Introduced Legislation Regulating Genetically Modified Organisms • Introduced Legislation Relating to the Restoration of Maui’s Coral Reefs Cochran has been a member of the County Council since 2010, and in that time she’s grown very popular. In the 2016 General Election, Cochran was the highest vote-getter of anyone elected to the Maui County Council. Her 31,970 votes even topped fellow County Councilmember Don Guzman (he won with 30,764 votes), who also recently announced that he’s running for Mayor (as is current Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui). Popular though she might be, Cochran’s campaign doesn’t have a lot of money. In fact, her most recent filing with the Campaign Spending Commission, which covers Jan. 1-June 30 of this year, indicates her campaign committee is nearly $59,000 in debt.
TULSI GABBARD CO-SPONSORS ASSET FORFEITURE RESTRICTION BILL Here’s a small bit of very encouraging news that comes from, of all places, the U.S. House of Representatives. Yesterday, the House actually approved a bipartisan amendment to an appropriations bill that restricts Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ plans to expand the loathsome practice known as asset forfeiture. What’s more, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, was one of the amendment co-sponsors. Honestly, so much of what law enforcement agencies do is bad, but asset forfeiture has managed to infuriate both the right and left. “Known as adoptive forfeiture, the practice allows the federal government to accept money and property that has been seized by state law enforcement agencies from people, in some cases, before individuals are formally charged or proven guilty of a crime,” states a Sept. 13 news release sent out by Gabbard’s office. “This practice creates a loophole for states that have adopted stringent, constitutionally sound asset forfeiture laws and allows them to continue practices that are otherwise deemed illegal at the state level.” While we’ve certainly had our disagreements with Gabbard in the past, her stance on opposing asset forfeiture is (literally) right on the money. “Attorney General Sessions’ recent announcement to expand civil asset forfeiture allows local law enforcement to bypass state laws and seize property from people with the lowest possible burden of evidence without concern for whether the person is eventually charged or convicted,” Gabbard said in the news release. In fact, Gabbard said a lot of great things

about asset forfeiture, which is often misused by law enforcement agencies all around the country (the Maui Police Department even used asset forfeiture funds to buy an ice machine, which we reported back in May). Here’s the rest of Gabbard’s statement on why she co-sponsored the amendment: “While some will tell you this is necessary to go after big drug cartels, the reality is the median value of the adoptive forfeiture seizures is around $9,000,” she said. “Not only is this median value not a sign of major drug trafficking operations, but seizures tend to be focused on poorer neighborhoods. Between 2012 and 2017, the median value of assets seized by Cook County police was just over $1,000; in Philadelphia in 2015, the median value was just $192. “This policy does not discriminate between the innocent and the guilty. Rather, this policy

And it’s official: Maui County Councilmember Elle Cochran is running for Mayor. Her new campaign website, Elle4mayor. com, went live on Sept. 13. “I became involved in government because I realized that the leaders in office at the time were not representing my voice or the will of the people,” Cochran says on the website. “I went from never having voted in my life, to realizing that I can actively participate and do something to help preserve and protect this place that we all love so much. I knew that I could listen to the people and be that missing voice that was so desperately needed. Seven years later and I have remained true to my intentions and true to my community as an unwavering voice for the people. Often times I have stood up as a lone voice for issues that meant something to this community. In the face of adversity it can be difficult at times to stand your ground, but I have never been one to back down from a difficult task or a complicated problem, especially when it’s the right thing to do. I believe that if it is the will of the people, we as policy-makers, should and can find a way to make it happen. My office has earned a reputation for thinking outside of the box to find solutions to our county’s long standing problems. I aim to bring this progressive and innovative thinking to the administration.” Cochran’s statement that she’s often a “lone voice” is no lie–her longstanding opposition to the county’s big landowners and developers guarantees her a seat at the card table with the kids at pretty much every official function (assuming she’s allowed inside in the first place). Back in 2014, when she was facing a tough reelection battle against Ka‘ala Buenconsejo, a then-political neophyte who was benefitting from lavish campaign ads paid for by the carpenters union and other land de-
veloper interests, Cochran told me an amusing but telling story that exemplifies the price she’s long paid. “The carpenters union has never endorsed me,” Cochran told me, then recalled her interview with them when she first ran for office. “Their big question was how do I feel about the conversion of hotels to timeshares. I told them that I know it gives them a lot of jobs, but I lost my job because of timeshares. They downsized a lot of people when they converted to a timeshare. Ever since, I haven’t been asked back.” Cochran’s list of legislative achievements on the website is impressive. It spans a variety of issues, though most touch on environmental concerns. Here are just a few:
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard
places the responsibility on private citizens to prove their innocence rather than put the appropriate burden on law enforcement to prove guilt. All too often, innocent people without legal representation never see their money or property again, and even those who are proven innocent have no promise their property will be returned. “The Fifth Amendment of the Constitution exists to protect the citizens of this country from being deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. In practice and in principle, adoptive forfeiture is a violation of that Fifth Amendment.” According to The Intercept, which first wrote about the anti-asset forfeiture amendment on Sept. 12, “The amendment passed with a voice vote, meaning it had overwhelming support.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

KEALI‘I REICHEL’S HALAU GETS OHA REFORESTATION GRANT Maui’s Halau Ke‘alaokamaile will carry out a native tree reforestation project with the help of a grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA). The halau, under the direction of Keali‘i Reichel, was awarded a $240,697 two-year
grant from the OHA to help restore native trees and propagate cultural practitioner crops on a six-acre parcel within the 258-acre Hoku Nui Maui regenerative farm complex. The six-acre native habitat is located around and in close proximity to the Halau Ke‘alaokamaile building site, for use by Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners and their students. The reforestation project is designed to restore native flora and fauna, enhance the watershed and perpetuate cultural practices at the site. Hoku Nui Maui LLC, which is located in the Pi‘iholo area of Makawao, has donated 3.4 acres of land to build a permanent home for the halau to engage the community in perpetuating Hawaiian traditional values through arts, dance, language and agricultural practices. The property will also include multipurpose classrooms and a resource library to collect Maui-specific chants, songs and valuable wind, rain and place names. Traditional knowledge from these sources will also be used to identify plants for the restoration project. The Hewahewa ‘ohana–Koa, Kahaku, Kepa and Ka‘awa–will lead the restoration design and planting of the site. The Hewahewas–alongside Reichel–will develop protocol and cultural education content as an integral part of the planting and maintenance process. Halau Ke‘alaokamaile will facilitate the participation of six additional Native Hawaiian cultural groups in the reforestation and education project. Hoku Nui Maui is creating an approximate 30-acre Native Habitat Corridor and this partnership with Halau Ke‘alaokamaile helps to create a template for future sustainable restoration and cultural education efforts at the site. -Suzanne Kayian ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

VOLUNTEERS CLEAN PO‘OLENALENA BEACH PARK Nearly 50 volunteers picked up more than 1,000 pieces of trash and debris on Sept. 16 at Po‘olenalena Beach Park in South Maui. The volunteers, who were both locals and visitors, helped pick up the trash in just over two hours. The largest concentration of trash was the nearly 800 cigarette butts cleaned off the beach. In addition, the volunteers picked up more than 200 food wrappers, 240 metal bottle caps and 106 plastic bottle caps. The group also cleaned up the typical beach debris including fishing buoys, fishing net pieces, fishing line and rope. Items left be-

How medical marijuana dispensaries handle money is a huge problem nationwide. Just. Plain. Huge. In January, the Los Angeles Times reported that the whole industry is on track to bring in about $7 billion in revenue in 2018, which means the problem’s only going to get worse. The problem is very simple: though many states, including Hawaii, have legalized the sale of marijuana for medicinal purposes, the federal government still considers the drug completely illegal. That means banks–regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)–refuse to do business with anyone who handles medical marijuana money. And that means the dispensaries that are doing business right now are doing so on a cash-only system. Given the $7 billion in revenue this industry is on track to bring in, that just invites all sorts of trouble. But now Hawaii state officials say they have a solution. “The state has secured the services of Colorado-based Safe Harbor Private Banking that will provide limited and temporary financial services for Hawai‘i’s cannabis dispensaries,” says a Sept. 12 news release from Governor David Ige’s office. “CanPay, a debit payment mobile application, will process sales transactions at retail dispensaries. Hawaii’s eight dispensary license holders have agreed to implement cashless operations by October 1, 2017.” According to the news release, the CanPay app will allow cannabis dispensaries to conduct all their typical financial transactions, as well as set up payroll direct deposit, collect taxes and pay vendors. State officials insist the whole system will be “transparent.” Gov. Ige’s apparently sold on it.
“This new cashless system enables the state to focus on patient, public and product safety while we allow commerce to take place,” Ige said in the news release. “This solution makes sense. It makes dispensary finances transparent and it makes it easier and safer for dispensaries to serve their patients and pay their employees and vendors.” While it sounds great at first, forcing patients to use a debit payment app forces them to open a bank account in the first place, which a lot of poor people simply haven’t done. This would be very bad, but Teri Gorman, the spokesperson for the Hawaii Educational Association for Licensed Therapeutic Healthcare (HEALTH), which represents the state’s dispensaries (she also works for Maui Grown Therapies), says the dispensaries will still allow patients to pay in cash. “The few patients who choose not to participate in a program that requires checking account transfers will still be able to make cash purchases in all Hawai‘i-licensed medical cannabis dispensaries,” she said in a Sept. 13 statement from HEALTH.
hind by beach-goers included plastic lids, straws, forks, knives and spoons. International Coastal Cleanup Day was hosted by Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Hawaii Mermaid Adventures. For the past 30 years, The Ocean Conservancy has hosted the worldwide International Coastal Cleanup event. During that time, nearly 12 million volunteers have removed over 220 million pounds of trash from the waterways and beaches; Maui’s International Coastal Cleanup event is supported by Malama Maui Nui, in conjunction with The Ocean Conservancy’s international cleanup efforts. The Po‘olenalena Beach Park trash pickup count also included construction materials, fireworks, tires, a car hood, one Boogie Board, metal and plastic fence material, diapers, tampons, condoms, PVC pipe, glow sticks, a van seat, razor blades, camping gear and shoes. The clean-up count does not include the two groups who used the Clean Swell App to keep track of the debris they removed. After the cleanup, this data was added to the International Coastal Cleanup’s marine debris database. Results from the data help inform policy and debris removal efforts. Maui’s International Coastal Cleanup was organized by Hawaiian Paddle Sports as part of its Malama Maui community give back program. To learn more, visit HawaiianPaddleSports.com/Malama-Maui.

Guests at Scotland’s Macdonald Loch Rannoch hotel were terrorized by Robert Fergus, 72, and his wife, Ruth, 69, in February when the couple rampaged through the lobby with scissors and threatened to shoot other guests. The incident apparently began when Mrs. Fergus pounded on a hotel room door at 1:45am, leading the guest within to call front desk staff, who Mrs. Fergus told her husband treated her “with hostility.” That’s when Mr. Fergus “reacted disproportionately” by running naked into the lobby with scissors, cutting communications cables and shouting that he would “slit” and “kill” onlookers. Meanwhile, Mrs. Fergus told staff she was going to “get a gun and shoot you,” according to prosecutor Michael Sweeney. Staff and guests ran out of the hotel, while Mr. and Mrs. Fergus returned to their room to pack and took off in their BMW. They were apprehended when they flagged down a police car to accuse the hotel staff of abusing them, and Mr. Fergus could not pass a breath test. At their sentencing on Sept. 1, their attorneys blamed overconsumption of alcohol for their behavior, noting that Robert Fergus “had previously been of good character.” Nonetheless, they were fined 4,100 pounds and ordered to pay 800 pounds to cover the cost of damage to the hotel.
CRIMINAL’S REMORSE An anonymous Australian tourist mailed back a small stone he lifted from the Cwmhir Abbey in Wales, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1176, in August. The thief included a note explaining his remorse: “I have been an avid follower of the Welsh kings and their history, and so I took this rock. Ever since, I have had the most awful luck as if Llewellyn (sic) himself was angry with me.” Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native prince of Wales, was beheaded and buried at the abbey in 1282, and legend says his ghost haunts the abbey. The trust that manages the abbey put the returned stone and the note on display, presumably to deter future sticky-fingered visitors.
A SINGULAR OBSESSION In Wenzhou City, China, an 11-year-old boy underwent surgery in August to remove 26 magnetic Buckyballs from his penis. The balls caused a blockage in the boy’s urethra, which caused bleeding and swelling. He told pediatrician Wang Yongbiao that he put the toys in his penis because he was “curious.” (Bonus: The boy was identified in news reports as “Pi Pi.”)
IRONIES A Turkish homeless man who was sentenced to house arrest in June has had his sentence altered to better reflect his circumstances. Baris Alkan, 31, had been confined to a specific area, an empty spot enclosed by metal plates, near a bus station after being detained for using and selling drugs. “I don’t have a home address, so I have to stay here,” he said. “Even though I don’t have a house, I’m under house arrest.” The court subse-

quently lifted the house arrest order and now requires Alkan to sign in at a nearby police station once a month.
PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Emily Mueller, 33, of Ohio asked a photographer friend, Kendrah Damis, to take pictures of her pregnant with her fourth child–and covered in 20,000 bees. Mueller, who is a beekeeper, checked with her doctor before the photo session and was stung three times during the shoot. She said she associates bees with life and death: “Bees came into my life in a time that we had just suffered a miscarriage,” Mueller said. “That’s where everything fell into place for me–when honeybees entered my life.” She hopes the maternity photos will highlight the importance of bees.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Steven Gomez-Maya, 20, handed tellers at the TD Bank North in Seymour, Connecticut, a note on Aug. 19, demanding money. He apparently failed to notice that his note was written on the back of his girlfriend’s pay stub, and when he tried to return to the bank (presumably to retrieve the note), the doors were locked. Seymour police tracked down the owner of the pay stub, and when they arrived at the girlfriend’s home, they caught Gomez-Maya as he was driving away. The hat he wore during the robbery and “a large amount of $10 bills” were found in the car, and he was charged with first-degree robbery.
COMPELLING EXPLANATION Andrew Shaw, 44, of Lancashire, England, appeared before the Blackpool Magistrates Court on Aug. 29, facing three counts of possessing obscene images of children on his computer. Shaw and his wife arrived at the court with their guide dogs, as both are legally blind (Shaw has a small amount of sight in one eye). His attorney explained: “It may be argued that difficulty with his vision makes it difficult to put an age to images he downloads. He may think he is looking at 16-yearolds.” Shaw was granted bail.
OOPS! Most news items about sinkholes highlight the large size of the hole. But a man in Brooklyn, New York, was trapped by a sinkhole in the middle of the street that was just big enough to swallow his leg. Steven Suarez, 33, was making a delivery with a hand truck on Myrtle Avenue on Aug. 29 when his foot disappeared into the pavement. “I was scared,” Suarez said. “It was my whole entire right leg, up until my tailbone basically.” Suarez was trapped for nearly an hour as bystanders directed traffic around him and rescue workers tried to free him. Co-worker Joe Grunbaum, 32, said Suarez seemed to be in a lot of pain, but the only casualty of the incident turned out to be Suarez’s right sneaker. ■

ark Johnstone isn’t just one of Maui’s finest professional musicians. If you’ve ever had the chance to hear him play the piano, guitar, harmonica or sing, you already know that he’s a virtuoso. He’s got the soul, depth, tilted Fedora and swagger. He also speaks with a slight East Coast accent, plays in the Grammy-nominated Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, wind surfs on the North Shore and is pretty funny. In fact, Johnstone was my first roommate and one of my first friends when I moved to Maui from Oahu. Johnstone’s sense of humor is more like a banter that plays on tomfoolery. It’s unique, special and infectious. He always has great stories, especially when it has to do with being a musician. “Some think being a musician is all about panties thrown on the stage, signing breasts and phone numbers on paper napkins,” he says. “Being a musician on Maui means you often have to drive long distances and unless there’s a piano at your gig, you have to remember things.
10 SEPTEMBER 21, 2017
There’s always that moment several miles from the house when a feeling of paranoia comes over you and have to keep turning around to look in the back of the car to see if you’ve forgotten something… like that one of a kind power cable… I’ve pulled over more than once. It’s not only important to remember to bring your stuff, but also to remember to put it back in the car after. Once, I left my whole show on a cart out in front of a hotel and drove off. I didn’t realize it until halfway through a fish burger in Paia. I’ve heard a tale about a guitarist who left his guitar in its case on the front bumper of his truck and it made it all the way from Lahaina to Upcountry unscathed. I have an amplifier with tire tracks on it.” Jazz and blues are two genres that you’ll most likely hear Johnstone play and sing. “Jazz is a feeling,” he says. “It’s the music of the moment. It’s a spiritual pursuit, and always has one foot firmly planted in the blues. Any music that takes you away from the mundane is alright with me.”
Born in Massachusetts but raised in Maine and Rhode Island, Johnstone comes from a musical family. “Both of my parents have shown me great support and guidance,” he says. “My father and I still have long-winded phone conversations about the current state of music. He came out of the ‘50s and ‘60s. I feel like I would have enjoyed living back then. Not that I’m not having fun now! But I feel like I’m somewhat of a bridge between generations; part of a musical lineage which began with my great grandfather, who was known in upstate New York as ‘Jazz Johnstone.’“ Johnstone says his dad’s band used to play Saturday nights at a golf course clubhouse on the other side of a wooded area from his house. On those nights he’d open his window and hear the music drifting through the trees. He was always able to recognize the tunes. In fact, his great grandma’s kitchen is where his dad, grandfather and uncles jammed harmonica. That’s what first introduced Mark to the Great American
Songbook. He fell in love with those tunes, and still plays some today. Which is partly why Johnstone was one of the local musicians appearing at the recent Maui Jazz and Blues Festival in Wailea. Seeing him play the harmonica alongside accordion master Jo-El Sonnier (the undisputed “King of Cajun”) was legendary. Harry Johnstone Sr. (Mark’s great grandfather that he never met) was a bandleader in upstate New York. He went by the name “Jazz Johnstone.” His daughter was an accomplished vibraphonist and appeared in the 1932 movie The Big Broadcast, starring Bing Crosby. She was one of the singing telephone operators. “Jazz Johnstone was the reason I brought back the ‘e’ to my name, which was lost by my grandfather while he was in the U.S. Air Force,” Johnstone told me. Mark Johnstone first started playing music at age four. He says he used to sneak into his older sister’s room to play her electric piano. Back then, the keys were about eye level, and

The organizer asked if I would play solo. So I set my keys up and began playing. Shortly into my set, some teenage girls came up to me and said, ‘Me and my friends have been talking and we have decided that you should stop playing because we’re over it.’ Ouch! Worked over at Pavil’s!” Johnstone says that one of the biggest lessons he’s learned on Maui is the importance of being a diverse musician. “Maui has helped me to be a bit of a chameleon,” he says. “Most of all, the island has shown me how to be a nice person to work with. That goes a long, long way.”

“I learned so many practical things from Mac; how to do business, how to start and finish tunes, how to accompany singers, how to play a ballad, and most of all, how to be grateful as hell whenever you’re behind your instrument,” Johnstone says. “He was a great educator, and left a profound impression on me and all those that he met along his way. Whenever I have a moment of uncertainty on the bandstand I always think, what would Mac do?’” Before Johnstone moved to Maui (over 16 years ago), he lived in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. There he enjoyed the seasons by snowboarding and playing music at restaurants, venues and private events. Since he also loved windsurfing, moving to Maui was a natural move. “While looking for an apartment, I ran into Steve Sargenti, who basically gave me his whole contact list and said ‘here, go meet the cats,’” Johnstone says. “That’s aloha. I did a lot of footwork in the early days here on Maui, and played in lots of bands.” He told me that his solo piano gigs have been invaluable, including some of his long-term mainstays in South Maui. For over 14 years, he’s been creating the vibes every weekend at Hotel Wailea (the former Capische.) Back in the day, Johnstone would visit Fulton Tashombe when he would play at the Kea Lani Resort in Wailea. Sometimes, Tashombe would let him sit in. Tom Cherry was also a big help when Johnstone first arrived on island. He hired him at Hi-Tech and he’d include him in gigs with his band. After his first few months on Maui, Johnstone landed a five night a week gig at the old Marco’s in Kihei. “I was living the dream,” he says. “Marco was great and let me hire sidemen. It was a good way to get to know the cats. Then, my phone started ringing and I felt embraced by the Maui music ohana.” Well, mostly embraced. “When I first hit the island, I found myself in a live hip-hop band,” Johnstone told me. “They had volunteered to play at Pavil’s (Ho‘okipa) for a beach cleanup one Sunday. I was the only one who showed up.
You can see Mark Johnstone play on Maui on a weekly basis. He plays every Friday and Saturday at the Restaurant at Hotel Wailea (6-9pm), every Monday at Café des Amis in Paia (6:30-8:30pm) and every Thursday at Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon (6:30-8:30pm). He can also be seen playing gigs at Fleetwood’s on Front Street. Check the Fleetwood’s website for more details, and you can follow Mark on Facebook at Facebook.com/ markjohnstonemusic. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

that he quickly learned how to turn the tube amplifier “ON.” “My parents heard me playing and decided that maybe the wrong kid was taking piano,” Johnstone says. “That was the start. I studied classical pieces and memorized them quickly. However, my favorite thing was making up my own tunes. It was then that I realized there was a direct connection between the music and the way I was feeling. I became immediately hooked on this idea of selfexpression. I soon learned that music was also a great way to gain people’s attention.” This was just the beginning of his musical education, and he continued studying classical piano with various teachers up until he was about 12. That’s when Johnstone discovered the guitar. “Guitar has been a great companion,” he says. “I always liked the way it felt against my body. Plus, my father was a great guitar teacher, so that came in handy.” Johnstone’s first musical role model was also his father. While he was growing up, his dad would teach guitar lessons at his home. He’d also hold band rehearsals in their living room. “The guys in his band were some groovy cats and I wanted to be like them,” Johnstone says. After high school, Johnstone enrolled in the Berklee College of Music (he also has an English degree from the University of Massachusetts in Boston). Since there were so many guitarists there, he decided to go back to the piano keys. “Berklee was sink or swim,” Johnstone says. “It was very competitive, which can be overwhelming and inspiring at the same time. I learned what I needed to work on, and met the people I needed to know during my time there.“ During and after college, Johnstone continued on his musical journey. This is when he sought out the tutelage of his second most influential mentor, Mac Chrupcala (whom his father played with in the ‘60s). Mac was the best pianist Johnstone had ever seen, heard or known. He followed him around, and eventually became his roadie in exchange for piano tune-ups.
Johnstone is currently one of the very talented members of the four-piece Mick Fleetwood Blues Band. Naturally, I had to ask him how that relationship and musical venture came about. “My friend Lenny Castellanos, who plays bass with Mick, told me that Mick and the guitarist Rick Vito were starting a project to commemorate 40 years of Fleetwood Mac, specifically the Peter Green years,” he says. “Oddly enough, I was born the year they were founded in 1967.” Johnstone says he jumped at the opportunity and organized an audition with Mick Fleetwood. He says that when Fleetwood headed into the audition, he heard him play some greasy organ, saw his Fedora, and gave him a nod of approval. How cool is that? “Mark is a player’s player, and is always in the groove–on the keys and harmonica,” Fleetwood has said of Johnstone. Johnstone has been part Fleetwood’s band for about eight years now. “It’s been a great journey,” Johnstone says. “My main goal is to be true to the genre and at the same time be myself. We’ve toured Europe, Australia, New Zealand and just finished a West Coast/ Canada tour. A long time ago, I put it out into the universe that I wanted music to show me the world. Cruising with Mick, Rick Vito and Lenny has helped me realize this goal. Hopefully, there’s much more to come.” In 2009, the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band’s album Blue Again was nominated for a Grammy in the Traditional Blues category. Though they didn’t win,
Johnstone told me how cool it was to experience the red carpet at the Grammy Awards, and how surreal it was to sit there in the audience. In addition to playing in the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, Johnstone is also involved with many musicians throughout the islands. He told me that playing with Fleetwood has certainly helped to open some doors for him. “I’m honored to be embraced by the Maui music ohana, and also by people like Henry Kapono,” Johnstone says. “I really enjoyed playing his ‘Back in the Day’ concert at the Waikiki Shell a few years back. It was quite a moment to be up there with all of those legendary Hawaiian entertainers.” Johnstone also has his own band, called Wavetrain. They’ve actually played over a 150 shows at Charley’s in Paia. Consider them connoisseurs of dirty, modern, electro funk (you can check them out online at Facebook.com/ wavetrainmaui). “I consider myself very lucky that the venues I play at allow me to explore my own musical vision,” Johnstone says. “I don’t play a lot of the usual stuff you hear on the radio. If something contemporary catches my ear, I like to incorporate it into my repertoire. There is a balance, however, between being artistically indulgent and keeping people entertained. Either way, I believe that if you’re coming from a genuine place, then folks will pick up on that and appreciate it. Most of all, play the melody!”

all of the smoothies to keep the calorie content down. Smoothies can get crazy in calorie count really fast. Glam is strawberries, collagen, orange and carrot. Our smoothies come in around 200 calories.” Their juices also have a following. They keep three kinds minimum in the grab and go container. “We have the Purify Me that was the first juice we had formulated for our menu, and it might be the best selling item, period,” says Wentworth. “It has beets, turmeric, ginger, orange, carrot and lemon. It’s cleansing, and keeps your metabolism high. Beets are so good for the circulatory system. The Purify Me started it all with the juices. We used to make the juices in house, but then our juicer broke. It was the best thing that ever happened. For years I’ve been thinking I had to do cold press juice. When it broke I had about four hours to find juice for the next day. Luckily, R.I.P.E. juice stepped up, and they were looking for wholesale accounts. It was important to me that I keep the juices affordable, and I offer them at $9.50 for 16 ounces of juice.” Wentworth says there’s one thing that every Sip Me Cafe will have, and that’s friendly customer service. “I had no idea how hard service was until I worked in here,” says Wentworth. “We really try to stick to our standards. In doing that we have kept our coffee to a level, and Gridley has helped us keep to this level that you might not find in other coffee shops. We really try to excel at everything we do. Since we outsource our teas, our juices, our baked goods, it really allows us to do what we are good at. I’m not going to the staff and asking them to do all of the menu exceptionally. Instead, they can just focus on customer service, espresso and coffee. And my staff is not run down.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

ip Me is one of Makawao’s destination cafes. In the morning you’ll find Upcountry hipsters, folks on their way to work, wifi users and visitors all lined up to taste organic food and beverages. They opened on June 29, 2015, in the old Kitada’s location and have been gaining a following ever since. The cafe is bright, contemporary and cozy. In the last two years, owner Laura Wentworth has fine-tuned the menu, and has plans to open her cafes all over Maui. “Our name, ‘Sip Me,’ was all about what you could sip,” says Wentworth. “Coffee, tea, juice, smoothies, with pastries on the side. So our brand is changing a little bit, but our name is not. It will be interesting to see how this is received. I don’t think anyone will complain.” Her Kahului location will open soon, and that will add a lot of square feet to her operation. “Kahului is 3,000 square feet, and the Makawao location is 700 square feet, but we will not have a kitchen in that location, either,” says Wentworth. “We won’t have a commercial kitchen but we will have a large back of the house to store our foodstuffs. Kahului will also have a drive-thru, which will be a game-changer for us.” Since her neighbor Market Fresh closed, Wentworth is taking on more menu items. “When I opened, Market Fresh was across the street,” says Wentworth. “Chef Justin Pardo is a really good friend of mine. I didn’t want to do anything that went directly against his menu. I mean, let’s face it: I’m not going to make a sandwich better than Justin. Now that Market Fresh has closed, I’m actually working with a chef to make some lunch items. We’re really excited about this. We’ve tailored a farm-to-table menu that he will be launching for us. It will be launched out of the Kahului loca-
tion, but certain aspects will be integrated at the Makawao location.” The items will be grab-and-go and readymade, but her plan is to elevate the process. “We will have pohole fern salads, paninis, watermelon sage salads and a Sip-Me full nutrition salad that has everything you could possibly need in one salad,” says Wentworth. “He’s going to go into a commercial kitchen, make it all, and then go into our location and set everything up. So it’s pre-made but at a whole new level.” Sip Me’s current menu includes breakfast fare like coffee cakes, yogurt, bagels, scones and danishes that run you from $3 to $9.50. There’s also a whole gluten-free section with muffins, scones, waffles, Brazilian cheese bread and coffee cakes. “I don’t bake anything,” says Wentworth. “I’m a horrible baker. You never want to eat anything that I bake. The gluten-free quiche is from Sugar Shop in Lahaina. They bake everything fresh daily for us. They do all of our gluten-free.” Having a coffee shop with no kitchen was a problem at first, but Wentworth learned it meant fewer permits overall. “One of the biggest challenges with getting this space open was trying to figure out how to do it without having to have a commercial kitchen,” says Wentworth. “You get hit with a lot of other permits when you have a commercial kitchen. There are already enough permits for just a coffee shop. We found four great chefs that we started with, they all specialize in something different and they rotate through the week, all week long seven days a week. One is great at coffee cakes the other is really good at cookies and Rice Crispy treats. We pick up fresh from them at 6am and bring it to the shop. The earlier you come in, you can get it hot from the oven. When the coffee cakes are all warm and moist, it’s so awesome. That’s my favorite and it’s our best seller.” But what people really want are the drinks, and that starts with coffee.
“I had heard about this guy, David Gridley, who used to own a coffee shop in Kahului, who now roasts beans as Maui Oma,” says Wentworth. “He’s amazing. He’s so passionate about what he does. He comes in and trains you and makes you learn how to pull perfect shot after perfect shot after perfect shot. He will not agree to let you carry his beans until he feels that you a) know what the difference is, b) know how to pull a perfect shot every single time under pressure and c) can follow these strict guidelines and give them over to your staff. It took about three months for us to convince him, but we did, and he did a full training with the staff. Now he’s family.” At Sip Me, the hot coffee will be a different bean from the iced coffee. “Our Sip Me house blend is a full roast Nicaraguan, Costa Rican and 10 percent Maui,” says Wentworth. “It’s really smooth and the caffeine content is a little higher. It’s a mixture of light and dark. You get the richness of the dark and the caffeine of the light.” Then there’s the espresso. “Our espresso is a full French blend,” she says. “It has four different kinds of French beans in it. Our iced coffee is a whole other blend. It’s all Italian. Italians make a really bold rich strong tasting coffee. It makes for really good toddies and iced coffees. Every different kind of coffee has its own different kind of blend.” The smoothies have recently been redeveloped to low-calorie recipes. “The smoothies are also formulated by chefs from Culinary Hill,” says Wentworth. “That’s an online chefs community. We had a chef out of New York create them. There is Glow, Glam and Green. Glow has mango and carrot. We try to do one vegetable and one fruit and then something that adds to it, like collagen, protein, or hemp seed. Those are all made to order with organic ingredients. Green is avocado, spinach, flax seed and pineapple and lemon. We do a water base with

Zeptember VIII THIS YEAR, THEY’LL RECREATE THE EARLS COURT 1975 SHOW AT MULLIGAN’S
T
here are many people who would argue that Led Zeppelin is one of the best bands in the 1970s. At the top of that list would be Ruth O’Keefe and Nils Rosenblad, who’ve poured gallons of blood, sweat and tears into Maui’s signature Zeppelin tribute show known as Zeptember. This year the show is back for its eighth installment, and there’s an amazing lineup and a new twist. “Normally what happens is we have a list of songs everybody wants to do, and the list of songs that need to be done,” says Rosenblad, the show’s Music Director. “There is this giant six weeks of negotiating who does what. This year, I was just starting to get into it, and already getting PTSD. I ended up watching the Earls Court 1975 show. I thought this was one of the best shows they ever did. It’s an insane set list. It’s what they do–they were geniuses at their presentation. The blocking of the show, what they played where. So I thought, let’s just do that, and it takes all the other stuff out of the equation.” The Earls Court show made history for Zeppelin. “We are just trying to bring back what was an incredible event,” says O’Keefe, the founder of Zeptember. “They picked some of their best songs for that show. Originally tickets were
one pound to two pounds fifty. They sold out so fast they had to add more nights. People still talk about this show, as one of the finest musical performances ever. The amazing thing is that with these Maui musicians, we’re able to do it. If you’re a hardcore Zeppelin fan, you will not be disappointed.” There’s an official video of the Earls Court show, but the bootlegs are what real fans love. “There’s video of the third or fourth night when they are already into a cocaine bender, which isn’t that great,” says O’Keefe. “But the bootleg from [nights] one and two, that’s one of the legendary shows. Most of the people that do this show, that are in the show, they just love the music. It was an incredible time for rock. That time has passed. It’s like we’re keeping something alive. It’s an opportunity. There are not a lot of rock shows on Maui–this is the real deal. It’s like the hammer of the gods. We go for it.” Zeppelin is a favorite with hardcore fans, but O’Keefe and Rosenblad note that the band has up and coming young fans now, too. “I think you can go back to any era and there is music that is absolutely compelling,” says Rosenblad. “In the ‘70s, it was Zeppelin at the top of the heap. There are so many Zeppelin samples out there too from the decades
after. I just know that my kids love it and they are nine and 15. We will go to a surf contest and we will be listening to Zeppelin on the radio. It’s partly because they were so exposed and distributed. Those were the best selling albums of their time.” Rock and roll bands in the ‘70s did a lot of bar and club shows, and that vibe is captured by hosting the show at Mulligan’s on the Blue in Wailea. “We’re at Mulligan’s again this year,” says O’Keefe. “I’m from a place where these musicians started in the bars–I understand the bar scene. I want to keep this event in a bar like atmosphere. I love Mulligan’s chandelier, wooden walls and the freedom to walk around listening to live music. It fits well with this show. When we started this eight years ago, it was such an unusual thing to think of, and [Mulligan’s owner] Mike O’Dwyer stepped up to the plate and said that he would host it.” One of the special treats is to see Maui musicians playing together in lineups you haven’t seen. “I got Chris Sendrey on guitar, and he is going to do ‘Dazed and Confused’ with a bow,” says Rosenblad. “That’s going to be an amazing segment. There are different lineups for each song. One of the things that’s really cool for the music community is that you’re
playing with people you don’t necessarily normally play with. They just aren’t in your band. So it’s a gathering of the tribe every year.” Event Horizons will be doing the lighting and Inside Out Universe is doing the sound. Doors open at 6pm. The musical lineup includes Gretchen Rhodes, Satchel Gleason, Danielle Delaunay, Chris Sendrey, Kai Katchedorian, John Michael, Tim Hackbarth, Justin Morris, Lawaia, Kaulana Kanekoa, Travis Rice, Rick Bodinus, Sara Jelley, Dave Elberg and Nils Rosenblad. Tickets are $35 on sale at Alice in Hulaland, Las Pinatas, Mulligans on the Blue, 808 On Main and Eventbrite.com. Tickets will be $45 at the door. “The songs on the list this year are incredible,” says O’Keefe. “We have ‘Kashmir,’ ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ ‘Rock and Roll’–all the big hits that you would expect are in that playlist for this year. I think Led Zeppelin is one of the best bands in the world. I’m walking around seeing kids come out of school wearing Zeppelin shirts. They’re popular with young people and popular with the older fans. Their music is absolutely incredible. Almost everyone knows a Zeppelin song.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E stories, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Look Who's Coming To Dinner Darren Aronfsky’s ‘Mother!’ is ferocious but fatally chaotic ★★★★★ Rated R / 121 Min.
I
n Darren Aronofsky’s ferocious but fatally chaotic Mother!, Jennifer Lawrence stars as the young wife of a would-be author (played by Javier Bardem) experiencing writer’s block. The arrival of unannounced guests (played by Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) intrudes upon the quiet of the couple’s country home, which they’re in the process of renovating. A mysterious opening scene establishes immediately that this isn’t going to be like any other film you’ve seen this year. The puzzle at the core of Mother! is that, for most of the film, we’re not sure if we trust the mindset of Lawrence’s character and whether the more outrageous things we’re seeing are hallucinations. There’s also the mystery of why Aronofsky decided the title needed an exclamation point, as if his crazy new film wouldn’t stand out. Lawrence dials down her usually boisterous screen presence and gives a radiant, admirably committed turn. Bardem, like Harris and Pfieffer, is entirely dialed in to the director’s off-kilter characterizations. The first act, in which the camera closely follows Lawrence as she explores the confines of their home and experiences unease as uninvited guests arrive, is the strongest. Striking visual clues faintly suggest where Aronofsky is taking us and fans of his work know to expect a relentlessly intense experience. More so than Aronofsky’s Black Swan or Requiem For A Dream (both masterpieces), this gave me the same sensation I had while viewing his rocky interpretation of Noah: after initially admiring how bold, uncompromised and committed he was to his vision,
I felt worn down, jerked around and finally cried out “Uncle!” I liked the final reveal, which answers the basic question of “What’s going on?” Yet, Aronofsky still leaves multiple interpretations on the table. Among them, this could be an allegory about motherhood overall, humanity portrayed as a fatally flawed microcosm or a metaphor for the creation and practice of a religion. Also, note the way a character states, “I need to take this to prove I was here,” a possible suggestion that the film is a commentary on colonialism(!). There’s a lot here to chew on, though most of the big moments in the third act rush by without creating a full emotional impact. On the surface, Mother! evokes the agoraphobia and mounting paranoia of Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby. It also reminded me of Thomas Berger’s darkly comic novels about proper etiquette in dealing with unwanted houseguests and how we should go in being accommodating. There’s also portions that suggest Aronofsky has viewed John Cassavetes’ A Woman Under the Influence, Peter Greenaway’s The Baby of Macon and likes a sprinkle of Richard Lester-type anarchy. If this all sounds very pretentious, so be it. Every great movie is pretentious. The problem here is that, in spite of how thought provoking and confrontational Aronofsky has intentionally made this, Mother! doesn’t work as well it should. With its subplot of how a writer’s words have the power to create and destroy, the film this reminded me the most is, of all things, M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water. That film and Aronofsky’s latest are both crafted with great skill, take huge risks, could care less about alienating their audience and stumble over the murk of their screwy presentation. It’s not Aronofsky’s fault that Paramount
No thanks–I had heart for lunch
Pictures has released effective but misleading trailers promoting his film. Make no mistake, this isn’t a horror film. Well, unless you’re an expectant mother or have a newborn. In that case, this may be unwatchable (truth be told,
Aronofsky’s other works are far more grueling). Individual opinion on this will likely scattered as the film itself. There are great scenes, especially early on but this is a film only a mother(!) could love. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Let’s not forget the dark side of being a Virgo. While you have this great (and well-deserved) reputation for being generous, selfless, and energetically helpful, you also have a sinister talent for being extremely manipulative. Lately, you’ve gotten some idea of the kind of power you’re unwittingly wielding, and now I’m worried that it’s gone to your head. This week, check your motivations. Usually, you manipulate people to do stuff that’s actually good for them. Can you honestly say your influence is that altruistic, or might it be more than a little selfish? If that’s the case, quit your voodoo hoodoo, right now–or it’ll come back and bite you in the ass. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
You’re lucky enough to have people you can depend on. But there’s a difference between leaning on them when you’re in need, and taking them for granted. You might be in danger of erring on the self-indulgent side and counting on your friends to be more forgiving and generous than the call of duty demands. They’d probably still give you what you’re asking for, but they’d resent you for it. Counter any mistakes you may have made in this direction by brainstorming ways you can give back to all the people who’ve been there for you. It shouldn’t be that hard; in many cases, a heartfelt thank you would do the trick.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Some people get this idea that you’re phenomenally confident and powerful, simply because of this aura you’re able to project (and of course because of your many talents). Few realize just how sensitive (and often insecure) you actually are. This is one of the quintessential quandaries of Pisces-hood. People are drawn to you because of one aspect of yourself, and bewildered by another you who’s completely different than they expected. Reconciling these two apparently contradictory sides of your personality is going to be a challenge your entire life. However, that said, this week you ought to be able to actually move them just a couple steps closer together.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
I wish that simply pouring your heart out in an honest and vulnerable way would always get you what you want. It’s such a sweet and amazingly sexy quality of yours. But, as you know, even your most heartfelt truth sometimes falls on deaf ears. What’s more, it’s occasionally been the subject of ridicule, which naturally has made you reluctant to give it another go any time soon. I hope, however, that you can overcome that reluctance this week, because an opening of the floodgates and spilling some honest, unedited truth is exactly what this situation needs. And, bonus: this time, at least, it’s quite likely to get you exactly what you wished for.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Are you one of those Scorpios who can dish it out but not take it? For someone with such a potent sting, you sure are thin-skinned sometimes. Someone gives you a dose of your own poison/medicine and you’re screwed. That’s probably why you avoid, like the plague, most people who actually remind you of you. However, there’s tons you could learn from your dangerous kindred spirits. This week, try to get to know one. Sure, there’s risk involved, but you’ll learn what many of us already know: the thrill of that danger is half the fun! SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Some people think Sagittarians aren’t territorial, because many of you move around or travel so frequently. Actually, you’re quite precious about whatever space you’ve marked out for yourself. It’s just that this so rarely pertains to the physical world; usually it’s some mental territory you regard as sacrosanct, and woe to whosoever dares set foot there. The problem is, since it’s purely metaphorical sacred ground, we don’t exactly know where its borders are. This week, should someone trod upon it, give them half a chance to beat a swift retreat. It’s only fair, and nine out of ten trespassers will, no drama necessary.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Sometimes you get to play the glamorous role of punching bag. I know this sucks, but it’s part of the price you pay for surrounding yourself with such fascinating and volatile people. Luckily, you can take whatever they dish out, and then some. Let those you love vent (to a point); it’s better they take out their frustrations with you, rather than someone who’d be crushed by them. However, there’s a difference between venting and out-and-out abuse. Know where that line is. If someone crosses it, nip that shit in the bud–for your sake, our sakes, and, of course, theirs. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Don’t take your duality to extremes. Things don’t have to be either one way or another. For instance, it’s a shame to completely sever an intimate relationship just because one or both of you is moving on. Presumably, you’ve both invested tons of time getting to know each other, and could still be valuable friends, even though you’re no longer having sex. Usually a comfortable new resting place for your changing relationship can be found somewhere on the spectrum between intimate sex partners and total strangers. All you have to do is look for it.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Don’t bother with subtlety this week. The sly wink that would usually let people know that you’re in on the game will almost certainly be missed. What would be hilarious to anyone in the know becomes offensive when they’re left in the dark, and can lead to major drama you have no time or energy for. Either skip the clever shenanigans altogether for a while, or spell them out a little more obviously. Sure, that robs them of some of their humor, but nevertheless that’s loads better than the alternative; at least you’re still soliciting laughter, not anger.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
This week is likely to either kick your ass, or rev you into high gear, depending on how ready for it you are. Imagine yourself standing in the ocean, being battered by waves. If you’re not paying attention, a six-footer could easily knock you off your feet and drag you into deep water. But if you’re ready for it, you’ve got several options: you could ride it, for a thrill, duck under it if you’re not in the mood for conflict, or just stand your ground, feet firmly planted, and let it roll over you. You like options, right? This week, stay alert and you’ll have them.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
In your mind, the truth is a mighty weapon, a holy, glowing sword that can cut through all kinds of bullshit and cast a revealing light on any situation. In reality, the truth is powerful, but not all-powerful. There are those who wield deception and illusion in ways that reduce the truth to a toy lightsaber, easy to deny and ignore. That’s why you need to develop more tools in your arsenal to fight the good fight. I’m not asking you to cultivate deceit, and truth will certainly always be your best tool–but having a few other tricks up your sleeve will make things more likely to go your way–which, my dear, is what we all want.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
You’re no backstabber. Leos rarely strike without loudly roaring first. People know when you’re gunning for them. That doesn’t cut into your potential scariness, because you’re still pretty ferocious and badass. But it does occasionally cut into your effectiveness. People have time to prepare for your fury to rain down upon them. This week, access one of the other big cats I know you have lurking inside you. Crouch down in the tall grass and stalk your enemy for once. I suspect you’ll be pleased at the results. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
