HATES PEOPLE NAMED BARRY The truth is, American Made is a 99 percent propaganda film using the name of a real person (“Spy The Friendly Skies,” Oct. 5, 2017). Berry [Barry Wurst II] should find out more about the complicity of the US government, military and CIA in drug trafficking. Also in training, arming and funding of Central and South American death squads. American Made falsely exonerates the government and blames one low level CIA desk idiot and Berry Seal. Truth be told tons of illegal drugs are still being flown in by Uncle Sam. It appears that you have the hots for Tom and flipped when he had your name. Don’t let your silly ego overshadow your professional opinion by gushing about a bunch of lies. It was a well made movie and Tom played his part well but the story is pure bull s**t. Blindly supporting a propaganda film is a huge disservice to your readers and the people’s lives who have suffered from our government’s drug trafficking, terrorist activities, funding and training.
Barry Wurst II responds: I’m curious, George, if you think misspelling my name is actually funny or if you just severely misread it the same way you did American Made. At one point in your mildly amusing letter, you correctly noted that the movie is “bull s**t.” I couldn’t have put it better myself! Condemning the film as propaganda is giving it far more credit than it deserves. Note the scene where Barry Seal (played by Tom Cruise) crashes his plane into a packed suburbia, emerges unscathed and covered with cocaine, with only one witness as he flees the scene. Does this sound remotely plausible? As I stated in my article, the film is akin to a political cartoon at best. American Made, like most movies “Based on a True Story” (ranging from American Sniper to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) are total “bull s**t.” Doug Limon’s film isn’t a documentary on the events leading up to Iran-Contra but a study of a ‘70s-era moral compromise, not unlike Goodfellas, Blow, etc. You should get worked up by actual Cruise-starring propaganda films, like Top Gun, or the one where he made bartending look impossibly cool, and not American Made. Thank you for acknowledging my “professional opinion,” which is questionable when I take the time to address letters like yours.

BARNES & NOBLE TO CLOSE LAHAINA STORE Here’s bad news for everyone on Maui who likes to read: Barnes & Noble, the largest bookstore on the island–and the only one specializing in new books–will close its Maui store at the end of the year. December will mark the end of Barnes & Noble’s 10-year lease at the Lahaina Gateway Center. Though the bookseller apparently wanted to stay, the lender that controls the center (it was repossessed some time ago) would not negotiate a new lease, store officials said. “It hasn’t even settled in,” said store manager Cindy Mauricio, who just found out last week that the store will close. “Sales are excellent. This has nothing to do with the community. We are part of this community, and we’ve been supported by this community.” For the last decade, the store has provided people on Maui with a comfortable place to find a large selection of new books, magazines, movies, music and toys. They’ve hosted many community events and book-signings (including a couple for me) and generally made life here more intelligent and thoughtful. Moving the store to another part of Maui is a possibility, but it would apparently take a year or two to do so. While the outlook certainly looks bleak for the store, there’s always the possibility that a significant outpouring of support from the community will light a fire under Barnes & Noble corporate management to fight for it. If the thought of losing Maui’s only large bookstore fills you with dread, then tell Barnes & Noble management. Go online to Help.barnesandnoble.com and/or call them at 1-800-THE-BOOK (843-2665). "Please do the right thing and devote some personnel and resources at the cor-
porate level to do whatever it takes to save our bookstore,” Kihei resident Sarah Hofstadter wrote in an email to B&N's corporate office. “If it can’t continue to operate in its current location, then find another spot on Maui–there’s quite a bit of vacant commercial space.” A spokesperson for The Festival Companies, the property management company for the Lahaina Gateway Center, says the Barnes & Noble decided to close the bookstore, not the shopping center. “Barnes & Noble Corporate made the decision to close its location at Lahaina Gateway Center and not to pursue a new long-term lease,” said Louise Lumague of Gilbert & Associates, which handles PR for Festival, in an Oct. 23 email. “Festival has no further comments.” For her part, Mauricio is still telling store employees that the store is closing. “It’s heart-wrenching that we won’t have our bookstore anymore,” she said. -Anthony Pignataro
THE MAUI NEWS WTF QUOTIENT One of the best entertainment sources in The Maui News on a daily basis isn’t the comics, it’s the Letters to the Editor. In other newspapers, that space is usually filled with fairly earnest discourse. But in The Maui News, civic discussions are amply supplemented by missives on God, the apocalypse, Mauitopia and government cover-ups, thanks to the regular efforts of a dedicated cadre of local writers. On Oct. 13, the section’s WTF quotient was ratcheted even higher with a letter labeled “More to the Las Vegas Story than What’s Reported.” In it, frequent letter writer and conspiracy theorist Steve Smith reached new rhetorical heights as he proclaimed himself “disturbed” by the
paper’s “one-sided coverage of the alleged mass murder in Las Vegas.” Just 16 days after the nation’s worst shooting massacre, Smith proclaimed the tragedy “a staged propaganda event,” including “a prepared script,” “a dead patsy,” “crisis actors,” and “an army of paid professional debunkers,” among other players. He went on to accuse the government of staging “hoax events” and “pretend mass shootings.” The letter ran days after the paper had interviewed real Maui residents who were at the attack. When sent Smith’s letter, Las Vegas Review-Journal editor Keith Moyer pronounced it “outrageous,” and said he was surprised that it had appeared in print. “I wouldn’t have published that,” said Moyer, a veteran newsman who, prior to his current job, worked as a letters section editor in the opinion section at two newspapers, and publisher (which oversees a paper’s opinion section) at three others, including the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “Editorial pages that want to be taken seriously have to avoid putting in letters that are beyond reason and not even believable at a certain point,” he said. “Otherwise you get a reputation as a crackpot paper.” Maui News managing editor Lee Imada wasn’t happy to hear Moyer’s remarks, and not surprisingly, disagreed. “The letters page is the place where opinions can be made, as opposed to our regular news pages.” Imada said. “I personally feel that Las Vegas was a horrible tragedy. I don’t believe [Smith’s letter] is true, but there are some people who have views that are way out there and many of them are avid letter writers.” Editor Moyer added, “[The Review-Journal] is a conservative newspaper, and we get a lot of nutty knuckleheads writing in. But I think we’re pretty good about ferreting those letters out and keeping it to civic discussions that are factual and reasonable.” Imada claimed if a letter contains factual inaccuracies, it is returned to the writer. Yet, a letter published in The Maui News on Oct. 18 quoted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson saying, “I am standing here today to tell you that I am on the same page as this idiot [President Donald Trump],” a quote that Tillerson never said. We sent the item to Imada, who never responded with a comment. But days later, the paper ran an apology from the letter’s author stating that he had mistaken a satirical quote for a factual one. Imada did acknowledge that the decision to run the Las Vegas letter was a tough one: “Frankly, I did have some editors inhouse who questioned whether we should run this letter or not. “But I stand by my call,” he added. “I’m sure most of the people who read that section did not believe it and were probably appalled by it. But the letter tells our readers that these [conspiracy theory] people are out there. I think that might have some
value as well. Then it’s the beginning of a conversation about people who hold these conspiracy theories.” Imada added, “The vast majority of our letters are acceptable, but we live in a society where people hold all kinds of views– some really fringe; some more normal. The interpretation of what is acceptable and what is unacceptable is sometimes difficult to make. One might argue that these days, in the political sphere, who knows what is actually the truth, or what the truth is. Unfortunately this is the world we live in.” Given his philosophy, I asked, if I wrote a letter about extraterrestrial aliens among us, would the News print it? “No, I’m not going to print that,” he replied. “There are levels of acceptable fact.” “However,” he added, dryly, “I guess it depends on how you would couch that letter about aliens. There may be a context in which it could get in.” -Deborah Caulfield Rybak
IN OTHER NEWS ON THE NEWS It’s doubtful The Maui News cares much what we think about its editorial letter policy, given the bombshell the paper dropped last week. Starting Nov. 13, the paper will no longer deliver the paper directly to subscribers. Instead, publisher Joe Bradley wrote Friday in a note to readers, the paper will be sent Monday through Saturday via U.S. Mail. In addition, Bradley wrote, the News will abandon the Sunday paper, offering instead, “a new and expanded Weekend Edition” on Saturday, which will include all Sunday features. “Our goal here is to provide dependable delivery to our customers at the most affordable price.” The news saddened Chris Conybeare, president of the Oahu-based Media Council Hawaii, a non-profit journalism advocacy group. “The community is going to lose another day’s coverage of news. What if something happens on Saturday? And Sunday is the time when people read the paper.” Conybeare recalled the period when The Maui News published just three days a week, adding “I’d hate to see it sliding back in that direction. I also feel badly for the people who will be losing work. I’m sad to see more cutbacks in the news business. The Star-Advertiser laid off 25 people in the last year.” Managing editor Imada was sad, too. “I don’t like it,” he said, “but unfortunately the reality is that it was a financial decision. Our revenues are down in general and there are some pretty stark financial realities that we are facing.” Imada didn’t know whether reader input could force reversal of the decision: “I just try to put the news out with a staff of only 13 people.” -Deborah Caulfield Rybak ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

SMARTPHONE APP NOW LETS YOU REPORT INVASIVE SPECIES You can now connect with the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) using the COM Connect app on a smartphone. It’s a mobile communication tool that gives citizens the ability to alert Maui
County officials to various issues like abandoned vehicles, potholes, graffiti as well as report invasive species. “One of the ways to keep [Maui] beautiful is by preventing outbreaks of invasive species,” said county Managing Director Keith Regan in an Oct. 19 news release. “Using COM Connect, we can help MISC identify these invasive species, where they are located and they in turn can dispatch their field staff.” Invasive species on the MISC list that people should report include coqui frogs, Little Fire Ant (LFA), miconia, pampas grass, ivy gourd, blessed milk thistle and fountain grass. “Maui County residents are the eyes and ears of MISC,” said MISC Manager Adam Radford. “We can’t be everywhere all the time and reports from the community are essential to successfully finding our target species before they become a problem for the community. For example, the public has found and reported almost every known occurrence of the Little Fire Ant on Maui and community members regularly alert us to single coqui popping up in neighborhoods.” The COM Connect application, developed and hosted by SeeClickFix, has been available to Maui County residents since March 2015; the app is free and is available in both Android and iOS. Since being made available to the public COM Connect has had 574 requests for service from the public, of which 486 requests have been completed. “This tool is another step towards involving our citizens in the fight against invasive species,” said County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons. “The easier we make it for people to report invasive species the easier it will be for MISC to respond before these species gain a foothold and negatively impact Maui Nui.” Go to Mauicounty.gov/2024/COMConnect for more information. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

“I was told a woman’s place is in the kitchen and the bedroom–not the boardroom,” said Gladys Coelho Basia, a third generation Maui woman who states forthright that she was born in 1940. Women in business have obviously come a long way. But experts predict it may take nearly 100 years for women to achieve economic equality with men worldwide; we can only hope that it’s sooner in the U.S. Basia was one of “8 Wonder Women” sitting on a panel on Sept. 22 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. The panel was part of “A Woman’s Place Is,” a three-hour confab presented by Maui Business Brainstormers to honor American Business Women’s Day. The diverse panel featured Judith Palmer Capertina, founder/owner of Haole Girl Island Sweets; Debbie Finkiewicz, president of The Maui Closet Company; Melanie Marrero, chief operating officer of Maui Brewing Co.; Leslie Malulani Shizue Miki, owner of Abundant Life Natural Foods; Susie Thieman, executive director of Lokahi Pacific; Diane Haynes Woodburn, publisher of Maui No Ka Oi Magazine; Mylen Fe Yamamoto, a YouTube talent agent and the force behind Cropsticks, a new eco-friendly line of bamboo chopsticks; and Baisa who retired at 65 only to realize “it was a waste” and now holds the Maui County Council’s Pukalani-Kula-Ulupalakua area residency seat; the Paia native is also the chair of the Water Resources Committee. And we did the math; she is 77. The predominantly female crowd was welcomed by entrepreneur Gylian Solay and emcee David Kapaku. Moderator Jay April, president and CEO of Akaku Maui Community Media, facilitated the conversation. April’s questions focused on the challenges of being a woman in the workplace, but he flavored the talk by go-
ing beyond the boardroom. The group was asked to fill in the blank, “A Women’s Place Is.” Responses ranged from empowering (wherever she can make a difference), to the political (in the White House), to the confident (wherever she wants to be). Maui No Ka Oi’s Woodburn said the biggest challenge of starting her company was not being taken seriously. In meetings, men would ask Woodburn if her husband was arriving shortly. Single at the time, Thieman was told early on that she was only working until she found the right man. Perseverance is a must to overcome those attitudes. “I never heard a ‘no’ I didn’t like,” said Thieman, who in 1979 was the owner and publisher of Downtown Planet newspaper. “‘No’ is just an invitation to do a better job,” Woodburn added. Yamamoto, who recently appeared on Shark Tank, said it is important to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. “Get a mentor that you trust,” she said. Yamamoto also believes that being a good person is essential for success. The panelists agreed that the Golden Rule is a vital principle. “Be a good person,” Woodburn said simply. “And err on the side of generosity.” These successful women believe it is important to follow your passion. “You have to love what you do,” Capertina said. If you love what you do, your enthusiasm for your business will be contagious. Marrero said she gets joy from living her life for today, not tomorrow. “This moment is your life,” she said. Marrero draws inspiration from a wide variety of people including Michelle Obama, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Hayden Panettiere, Katy Perry and the contestants on The Voice. When it comes to influences, however, most mentioned their mothers. The group generally agreed that stress relief comes from taking care of yourself, moving your body, eating healthy and sleeping well. “Exercise is huge,” said Capertina. Then Finkiewicz got a chuckle when she said everyone in her office
knows if she is stressed out because she starts cleaning ferociously. April closed the talks with the question: “What is on your nightstand?” The apparently overworked crowd laughed when Miki stated “Who has time?!” The books mentioned were as diversified as the individuals on the stage. (One editorial observation: the authors are all women.) Woodburn is reading Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy, written by Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg with Professor Adam Grant.Yamamoto is reading The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins. Capertina and Marrero meanwhile enjoy fictionalized tales. Marrero most recently read A Piece of the World by the bestselling author Christina Baker Kline. Capertina prefers serial-killer novels. American Business Women’s Day is a day to honor and reflect on the contributions and accomplishments of women in the workforce and women business owners. It’s a day to bring together women of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking and national recognition. Maui Business Brainstormers successfully honored ABW Day. The discussion was informative, entertaining, inspiring and empowering. Afterwards, attendees networked with each other and the panelists. Business cards were exchanged, Facebook friend requests were sent, and hugs of gratitude were shared. People left feeling motivated to work together toward equality.

News Of The Weird ALIEN INVASION! Bryant Johnson of Casper, Wyoming, was on a mission on Oct. 2 when police responded to a call about a man warning citizens of an alien invasion coming next year. KTWO Radio in Casper reported that Johnson told police he had traveled back in time from 2048, explaining that the aliens filled his body with alcohol and had him stand on a giant pad that transported him back to 2017–although he was supposed to arrive in 2018. He also asked to speak with the “president of the town.” Instead, Bryant was arrested for public intoxication.
FARM ANIMALS GONE WILD The owners of a mischievous ass in Vogelsberg, Hesse, Germany, have been ordered to pay for damages after Vitus the donkey apparently mistook an orange McLaren Spider sports car for a carrot. When Markus Zahn left his $411,000 car parked next to a paddock on Sept. 16, 2016, he returned to find that Vitus had nibbled on its paint to the tune of almost $7,000 in damage. “The donkey had insurance, but the insurance didn’t want to pay,” Zahn told the BBC. Vitus’s rap sheet also includes biting a Mercedes.
OOPS! In Romania, it takes more than foul weather or a damaged field to stop football. On Sept. 24, a match between Bistrita Brosteni and Vanatorul Dorna Candrenilor was abandoned just 58 minutes in after all the teams’ balls ended up in the nearby Bistrita River, according to the Hindustan Times. Bistrita was winning 2-0 when they ran out of balls. Fans suggested they might find the balls at the Bicaz dam nearby.

Santos told Metro News that Samantha would have to undergo repairs and cleaning, but she “can endure a lot. She will pull through.”

Doctors thought a 47-year-old postman in Preston, Lancashire, England, who complained of a persistent cough might have cancer, as he was a long-term smoker whose X-rays showed a spot on his lung. But when they removed the mass, the BBC reported, they found the “longlost Playmobil traffic cone” the patient had received as a gift on his seventh birthday. He told doctors he had regularly swallowed the small pieces as a child and believed he had inhaled the tiny cone. Happy ending: After the toy was removed, the man’s cough almost disappeared and his other symptoms improved.
CORPORATE SHENANIGANS The Russian division of Burger King has asked the country’s Federal Anti-Monopoly Service to ban Stephen King’s horror movie It from showing in Russian theaters because the clown character, Pennywise, looks too much like Ronald McDonald, and therefore the movie is advertising for McDonald’s. However, the Hollywood Reporter noted, the movie opened in Russia on Sept. 7 and had already grossed millions of dollars by late September. A spokeswoman for the FAS, confirming that the complaint had been received, said, “We can’t be concerned with the content of the film,” but the agency would determine whether it contained advertising or product placement.
INEXPLICABLE If you’re already shopping for your 2018 calendar, Metro News recommends you don’t overlook the Carponizer Carp Calendar, which features “12 beautiful carps with attractive women. On high quality paper.” Oh, and the women are naked. Hendrik Pohler, 28, the calendar’s creator, was struck with the idea when he was fishing with a friend “and at the spot next to us were two hot girls fishing,” he told Maxim, which described the models as having “stiff, pained expressions.”
CRIME REPORT Patrick Joseph Adams Jr., 36, of Great Falls, Montana, pulled the ultimate heist in July when he convinced two male friends and his girlfriend to help him “move out” of a house that wasn’t his. One of the friends was suspicious when he saw a wall in the home dedicated to military service, but didn’t remember that Adams had been in the service, the Great Falls Tribune reported. That friend left before the move was complete, but the rest of the group loaded about $40,000 worth of belongings into a U-Haul, requiring two trips. Later that evening, the true homeowner of the burglarized house called police and reported the theft, and through U-Haul records police were able to track Adams down. He was charged on Sept. 28 with burglary and criminal mischief.
BUREAUCRACY IN ACTION Juana Escudero, 53, of Alcala de Guadaira, Spain, has been dead since May 13, 2010. Except she’s still very much alive. FOX News reports that a Malaga, Spain, woman died on that date who shared Escudero’s full name and birthdate. As a result, Escudero was pronounced dead by the government, which has given her headaches ever since. For instance, she can’t renew her driver’s license or go to the doctor. Finally, in April 2016, she tracked down the actual dead woman in Malaga, and in September of this year, she petitioned the courts to open the grave to prove that she is not the dead woman. She even offered to do a DNA test. “On the government’s computers I am dead,” Escudero said, “but for the banks I am alive and kicking.” ■

he first ever Maui Comic Con took place last year at the Lahaina Cannery. An estimated 2,000 people attended, many in costume with their keiki. The event featured appearances by top tier comic book artists, an Artist’s Alley of local comic book artists, buyer’s booths, scores of comic books, a VIP room and panels pertaining to comic book films and TV shows. The Lahaina Cannery hadn’t felt so cram-packed in years and the event proved to be a dream come true for anyone living on the Valley Isle

who had never made it to either a mainland or inter-island comic book convention. A year later, Maui Comic Con is back and even bigger than its inaugural year. Now, UH Maui College will host the event, which will create a more expansive landscape, a more centralized location for attendees and more variety for lovers of all things comic books, movies and pop culture. In the weeks leading up to the event, most of the inventory at Maui’s sole comic shop, Maui Comics and Collectibles, is being boxed and stacked. Alika Seki, the owner of the store that hosts multiple gamer
meetings and the NERDWatch podcast, has rarely been busier. In addition to being the orchestrator of another eagerly anticipated Maui event, he’s also in the process of moving his shop. His cozy, charmingly stuffed store at the Akaku Center is moving across town. In fact, starting Nov. 1, Maui Comics and Collectibles will be right next to Paradise Video, making Wakea Avenue the hippest street on Maui (sorry, Market Street, you had a good run). While Seki has shaved his samurai hairdo and has his hands full, his enthusiasm for the upcoming Maui Comic Con
and a new store address with lots more room is contagious. MAUITIME: How will this year be different from last year? ALIKA SEKI: We’re moving our location to the college, which is where I always envisioned it would be. Not too much else. The formula is the same: we’re free to the public but offer VIP tables for patrons to pay to see the headliners. Stan Sakai, Mark Texiera and Joe Rubinstein will have their own booths, where they’ll charge for signatures. Our Artist Alley will have its own room. It’ll probably

be a zoo in there with all those artists! Last year we had 20 artists. We have 30 this year. MT: What was the response like from the public after the first Maui Comic Coin? AS: Huge. People for the entire year have been coming in and talking about it, how they’re looking forward to it. Since we’re more centrally located, more people will be able to attend this year than last. MT: Did it create a greater awareness of your shop? AS: Awareness of the store is the same but I think it’s a symptom of the demand for comics. MT: What are some of the highlights you’re looking forward to? AS: The highlights include the Brian Kohne and Adi Ell-Ad’s exclusive clips for the Kuleana panel and Stan Sakai’s drawing demo. Mark Texiera is doing loose sketches and free signatures for the first hour of the convention each day. The first 50 people in line will get a free poster and those on Sunday will get a free comic. There’s a super high concentration of local talent in one room. There are so many people volunteering to make things happen. There’s many who we trust to run with the ball. body of work. It’s rare that an artist’s cannon is so pure and complete. He’s really an artist’s artist. He recently put out the crossover Usagi Yojimbo/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The art is incredible on that one. MT: Tell me about the big move to Wakea. AS: We’re going to be occupying the same building as Paradise Video. That was originally the first spot I wanted to open the store. The Kidney Foundation had made the agreement and got it. They’re downsizing their space, we could use more room, it works out for everyone. I’m super excited. We’ll have Magic events, a separate gaming room, and more storage in general. We’ll be outside of Queen Ka‘ahumanu and Sheik’s and down the street from the college. We luckily survived long enough for us to open again. Our first day is Nov. 1. MT: How did the comic con venue relocation come about? AS: Ken Gardner is the catalyst for the convention. He went to the Lahaina Cannery last year–they were a great location and partners. We may work with them in the future to do something else. As far as this event being free to the public and the school/educational outreach goals to the community, it’s a better collaboration with University of Hawaii. I went to UH when it was MCC and was on the student government in 2000. I was on it for two semesters. I can’t get away from Kahului! It’s where all the action on Maui is anyways. MT: What is the Hawaiian Comic Book Alliance?
AS: It went how we expected it to. I loved how much of the cosplay community came. The largest cosplay convention on Maui so far. It’s very impressive to me, that Night Darling was able to rally the community like that. Needless to say, she’s in charge again. Being a comic fan, seeing the old, rare vintage comics. This year, we’ve got a guy who purchased the remainder of a pedigree collection. There will be a lot of silver and golden age comics, like Wonder Woman. Those kind of things, when you’re a comic fan, it’s just the best.
AS: Sam Campos, Chris Cravalho, Todd Bernardy and DJ Keawekane are the founders. It’s an associated group of local comic creators and writers who work to help each other out, pal around and keep each other informed about the industry. They’re a team. I’m inducted as the only comic book store owner. It was a kick listening to them debate as to whether they should induct me. They decided I was worthy. I get to pick one person to kick out... and that person is Todd.
MT: Tell me about your guests. AS: The main three are Joe Rubinstein, a legendary inker. Mark Texiera from the 1980s’ Ghost Rider and The Punisher and many more. He has a dark, grittier style. most notable from the 1990s’ Spirits of Vengeance series. Alika’s long-time, all-in-joking (we think) clash with Todd Bernardy is well known to anyone who listens to the NERDWatch podcast. The topics of the X-Men movie costume designs (a topic that inspires a rage of hellfire from Seki) and the integrity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Bernardy’s personal fuel for geek outrage) is enough to get the two of them into a Superman/Batmanworthy showdown. Bernardy, who resembles
MT: What were your first comic books? TB: My first comics were superheroes: Superman #16 in 1987 by Karl Kessel and John Byrne, and my first Batman Comic was Legends of the Dark Knight #1, by Denis O’Neill, Ed Hannigan, John Betty. The next big event in my life was Image comics. I loved Spawn By Todd McFarlane, Savage Dragon by Erik Larsen, Jim Lee’s Wildcats (although I am a bigger Gen 13 fan). Pitt by Dale Keown, Maxx by Sam Keith, Cyberforce by Marc Silvestri. These comics were a big influences on me and still inspire me. When I turned 10, I got Soundgarden’s Superunknown on cassette, and I became aware of James O’Barr’s The Crow, which inspired Kukui Project to be in black and white. I saw the film adaptation on VHS and was amazed
MT: What Inspired you to create Kukui Project? TB: Kukui Project grew out of my concern that politics influence scientists’ cooperation, especially in the face of climate change. I taught English in China, and the class used some of our time in English to catch up on trigonometry. The teachers made them do their homework in ink. When the students checked their answers against the smarter kids in my class, they would use tape to gingerly erase and correct their answers. Only three percent of them were going to college. Someone asked me when I got back from my trip if the US government would ever let the Chinese astronauts on the International Space Station. I thought it would be a catastrophe, if that line in the sand was drawn along our eastern and western hemispheres. If that line was drawn, it would be drawn right over Hawaii. Hawaii was a place where a line had been drawn in the sand during the ‘70s over the bombing of Kaho‘olawe. I saw the metaphor for Kukui Project evolve from the bombing of Kaho‘olawe to the breaking of the international space treaty. If humanity lets our politics get in the way of cooperation, it could lead to nations that haven’t ratified the international space treaty, equipping satellites with WMDs. If we can all cooperate to clean up Kaho‘olawe, then we could dismantle satellites carrying nuclear and biological payloads that could be dropped anywhere on Earth. The science in Kukui Project is stuff that we’ve already invented but we haven’t implemented. The Kukui Project isn’t about discussing what is right or wrong, it’s about doing what is Pono. MT: Does living in Haiku inspire your work? TB: Yes. I love it here. I love Maui. My wife is from Makawao. I had a huge plot point in Kukui Project that I had no idea how to solve until I lived here: The two astronauts investigating the reappearance of a missile, which was thought to Continued on page 13

MT: What are some lessons learned from last year?
TODD BERNARDY: I always drew pictures. Everything overwhelms me and it leads me to drawing or painting. Drawing de-saturates reality. Art is like sensory deprivation. My Uncle, Terry Bernardy, was a commercial artist and art director who helped me develop most of my skills. I like art because it helps me discover something, but Terry created art like he just knew. My Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Burgess, was really surprised by my strength in art. She encouraged me to pursue it. My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Miles, was an artist. She encouraged me draw my first full comic book when I was seven or eight. I had two really good art teachers in high school. I also studied with Michael Cook, and Ellen Koment at the University of New Mexico. The strength of the art program at UNM was that it was all chaired by working artists and exhibited at galleries. I also became interested in writing around middle school, so I had some really encouraging teachers. My favorite teacher from high school actually was my fifth grade teacher. We had a small school district, so he went from fifth grade school teacher to high school computer teacher. His name was Richard Barton. I got to scan and letter my comics digitally, so I could print them and bind them. Most of my teachers had an impact on my life. They all gave me license to pursue my interests in drawing and writing, so I’m grateful for that latitude.
how the book came to life. In 1995, I got Smashing Pumpkin’s Melancholie and the Infinite Sadness double CD, and every Heavy Metal magazine from 1977 until 1984. Heavy Metal had reprints of Moebius, and Richard Corben’s Den, and (maybe most importantly) Tex Arcana by John Findley, which is why Kukui Project is graphite. I later discovered Kabuki by David Mack while I was in high school. If you twisted my arm and made me pick five or six comics that led me to creating my own comics, it would be Kabuki, The Crow, Tex Arcana, Gen 13, Savage Dragon, and Spawn.

Continued from page 11 be completely extinct, were using an image on the casing to trace the manufacture of the explosive. I had no idea what that image would be, until I say this gigantic rooster behind the Thai food truck at the Haiku Cannery. I looked at the rooster and thought, “That rooster must eat tons of centipedes to get so huge.” That became the cover of issue #5, and is part of the coat of arms for the villain. My wife won’t let me give any more story details away. The prologue for the trade paperback of Kukui Project also features the banana trees from my backyard. If it wasn’t for Haiku, Kukui Project wouldn’t have any cocks or bananas. How’s that for subtext?
We believe that if you like comics you should read comics. Sam Campos, creator of Pineappleman, started the alliance to share knowledge between all of the members. Now the alliance exists to promote Hawaii’s diversity and literacy through comics. We will always stop to answer questions from future creators if anyone wants to talk story about comics. Sam was getting lots of questions from other creators about how to complete their projects, so instead of getting individual creators together, he brought a community of people together that have something constructive to contribute. I think part of the aim is to bring comics back into artist alley at conventions.
MT: Does your subsequent comic, Disco Thunder Groove Bone, come from an insatiable love for coffee?
MT: Where can we find your work? TB: Anybody interested in my work can see it at Kukuiproject.com, shop at Mulberrygroove.com
STAN SAKAI: There are many aspects of Japanese history and culture on which I would like to focus stories. There are major story arcs I have wanted to do for a long time such as Tomoe’s Wedding, in which I delve into traditional arranged marriages or Tengu Wars which revolve around these mythological creatures. I am just starting to write a few stories about Christians in the Tokugawa period, having introduced the first European character a couple of years ago.
travel. Sergio and I have been around the world together, and just returned from the UK last week where we were guests at The International Comics Arts Festival in Kendal where they inaugurated the Sergio Aragones International Award for Excellence in Comic Art.
MT: What was the initial response to Usagi Yojimbo from the Japanese community?
SS: I have done pretty much what I wanted to do. I grew up with the early Marvel superheroes so it was a thrill many years ago when a Marvel editor called and asked me to do a short story using any of their characters in whatever kind of story I wanted to do. I did a Samurai Hulk story, integrating the green guy with classic Japanese folktales. I just loved drawing the Hulk in armor fighting an army of samurai.
SS: They were very supportive and saw Usagi as a way of sharing their heritage to their kids. I did talks for Japanese community groups and libraries.
TB: I do love coffee. Disco Thunder Groove Bone is about two guys looking for the last coffee plant on Earth. Coffee was wiped out by a genetically altered blight, created by an evil energy drink company called Thunderchicken. I go to Maui Coffee Roasters all the time for the Happy Hour Cappuccino. I was at an event for 24-hour comic book day when I conceived Disco Thunder Groove Bone. I had just watched Pulp Fiction, Black Dynamite, Dolomite and Superfly. I sat down on Saturday at 12pm in early October 2011 and I didn’t stop drawing until Sunday at 11:15. At about 2 or 3 in morning, I thought to myself, I hope I never have to live in a world without coffee.
MT: In this climate of so many comic book properties being adapted for film and television, have you been fielded with offers? Since Usagi Yojimbo is your independent creation, is this something you’d even want? SS: Usagi has been optioned for movies and television many times, but never made it into his own series. He is in the current season of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in a three-part story which is very good. The toys are in the stores as well, with three exclusive action figures through Walmart.
MT: There’s an irreverence and cross-hybrid of genres in your work. Is the aim to blend seemingly disconnected elements or do you envision a narrative that naturally accommodates them (ala, Ninja Turtles)? TB: Most of the premises of my stories come from an episode of history crossed with a certain topic in philosophy. Most people think all comics are only the superhero genre. It isn’t true. I don’t like traditional superheroes. I think most people don’t realize that comics have just as many genres as most other media. I write a story I want to draw. Then I try to show it to people. I try to come up with a concise description to tell my readers at conventions. The big two Marvel and DC have been rebooting their superheroes for the last 10 or 15 years. They have alienated their readership by trying to recast these superheroes. Can I be an angry nerd for a second? This is a great question, because I want people to stop calling Marvel movies “comic book” movies. Philistines think comic books mean only superheroes. DC and Marvel Movies are only one genre, superhero movies. People need to stop calling them “comic book movies.” Comic book movies are art like Persepolis or American Splendor or Ghost World or Atomic Blonde. Don’t tell me an adaption of American Splendor can sit on the shelf with that awful Captain America: Civil War or Avengers: Age of Ultron at a video store, because they’re both “comic book adaptations.” This is why comic books like Maus probably won’t be adapted into film or animation in our lifetime, because something that won a Pulitzer shouldn’t be put into the same category as Spiderman: Homecoming.
MT: You’ve brought your talents to Groo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peanuts and many others. Is there an established story still out there that you’ve always wanted to take part in?
Stan Sakai
and at Maui Comics and Collectibles. If you’re on island, please go to Maui Comics. All those guys are pretty cool. Swan, Travis, Phormat, but don’t talk to Alika. I’m the upside down version of Alika, without a gift for math. I think that’s why Alika is trying to banish me back to my dimension.
MT: Please tell me about the Hawaiian Comic Book Alliance.
A final conversation to share in exploring the personalities of Maui Comic Con is one of the most esteemed guests in the convention’s brief history, Stan Sakai. His career is one of the most legendary in the comic book world. Sakai is the creator of Usagi Yojimbo (portraying a samurai rabbit’s adventures in Japan) and The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy. The former series began in 1984 and continues today, while the latter is inspired by Sergio Argones’ classic Groo the Wanderer, which Sakai contributed to early on as a letterer. He’s the recipient of multiple Eisner awards and has been nominated more than 20 times. He is the Kurosawa of comic books, a humble, extraordinarily skilled and highly experienced master of storytelling and comic book craftsmanship.
TB: The Hawaii Comic Book Alliance is a group of comic book creators that actually creates their own comics. We actually write and draw original stories that are created in Hawaii for the local community in Hawaii.
MAUITIME: Usagi Yojimbo has evolved so much over the years. Are there places you still hope to take the story that remain unexplored?
MT: Did growing up in a place as beautiful and rich with history as Kyoto also inspire your artistry? SS: My dad was in the US army, stationed in Japan where he met and married my mom. I was two years old when the family moved to Hawaii where my dad was born, so I remember nothing of Kyoto. However, there is such a large Japanese population in Hawaii and I was able to experience much of the traditions, history and culture. I really enjoyed growing up in Hawaii, but I never really appreciated it until I moved to the Mainland. I return a couple times a year to visit with family.
MT: You’ve mentioned in the past how the actor Toshiro Mifune has influenced your work. Which other artists and works of cinema influenced your character and storytelling abilities?
MT: You’ve been drawing Usagi Yojimbo for so long–do you ever dream about him or the other characters?
SS: Much of my storytelling is inspired by cinema and directors such as Akira Kurosawa and Alfred Hitchcock. I like straight-forward, clear storytelling with good pacing and frame compositions. I like the way James Cameron introduces characters, or I may like another director for how he stages his action sequences. My artistic influences vary from Japanese Osamu Tezuka to American Steve Ditko to Italian Milo Manara.
MT: Please tell us what your latest projects are and anything you’d like to promote.
MT: What is the collaborative process with Sergio Argones like? SS: I do the lettering for Sergio’s Groo the Wanderer and other projects. Usually, Sergio comes up with the story then hands it off to Mark Evanier for scripting. I say “usually” because sometimes Mark comes up with the story, gives it to Sergio, who gives it back to Mark. Anyway, then the rough penciled art comes to me with a script for lettering. I still do traditional hand lettering directly on the original art. It then goes back to Sergio for inking, and finally to Tom Luth who colors everything digitally and sends scans to our editor. We also
SS: A few of the stories have been inspired by dreams.
SS: The ongoing Usagi series continues through Dark Horse. I am currently writing and drawing a seven part story involving Usagi and Inspector Ishida, a Sherlock Holmestype character who was inspired by the Hawaii detective Chang Apana. It is a murder mystery involving high ranking officials who were much more than suspected. Other than that, the DVDs of the TMNT/Usagi crossovers will be on sale in December and the Usagi toys are on sale right now.

'Thoughtfully Prepared With Love' JOY’S PLACE LIVE! IN PUKALANI OFFERS A HEALTHIER WAY TO EAT

writer for Joy’s Place LIVE! and the team now offers an array of raw and vegan items. “We don’t think of ourselves as a restaurant,” Tuva said. “Our tag line is Healthy Take Home, and what we produce is more for people on the go.” Joy’s Place LIVE! still offers salads and sandwiches, but the shop believes the real value of their brand comes from the items the customers can use at home. They encourage newcomers to talk with the staff, learn about these ingredients, stock their fridges and create recipes for themselves, using the bases they find at the shop. The raw chili at Joy’s Place LIVE! is a good example. Tuya describes buying the chili, then going to a farmers market to grab fresh vegetables, cheese, sour cream or whatever you desire and then taking it home and adding it all to the chili to make it your own.
“There’s no comparison from fresh almond juice to what you might buy in a store,” said Tuya. “It’s a completely different product.” Having tried one of the cacao almond shakes, I can vouch for the unmatched taste. You can also taste the freshness in other, more standard items like the Chicken Caesar Salad. The shop also offers home remedies for sickness, including three-day cleanses. “The Cold and Flu Bone Broth and Maui Cold Buster are two wellness products that people have really been going for lately,” Tuva said. “Regardless of if they’re under the weather, it offers something healing to keep you on track.” Bone broths have been used for generations and Joy’s Place LIVE! adds their homemade touch to it by brewing the bones with fresh onions, turmeric, citruses and ginger. They also offer tonics fermented with immunity-

f you’ve stepped into Joy’s Place LIVE! in Pukalani, chances are you were met by the smiling faces of either Joy or Tuya, working hard as they prepared ingredients behind the counter. A very small pick-up shop that originated as a production kitchen, Joy’s Place LIVE! has become an island favorite for its simple and genuine approach to healthy eating. “The bottom line is that we always wanted to create an alternative for people,”
said Tuva. “There’s a lot of great food out here on Maui! But not all of it is healthy. Healthy food is the basis of a healthy lifestyle, and we want to provide food for people trying to eat cleaner. Organic ingredients, nothing real complicated or fancy, just real food! We felt that people wanted that. We wanted that. And we wanted to find something that felt close to what we would make at home.” Tuya has been working with Joy since the early 1990s, when the duo bonded over their passion for food. Back then the two made sandwiches and wraps, but in 2001 Tuya attended culinary school. Tuya returned to Maui as the principal recipe

Tuya and Joy try hard to accommodate customer requests, creating items that are in high demand depending on the time of the year or the products available. With Thanksgiving coming up soon, the shop will be offering seasonal treats like homemade gravies, cranberries, raw vegan pies and even a lilikoi coconut pudding. The kitchen also has a rotating soup menu that changes every week. “Our prices are maybe a little higher than people are used to seeing in the grocery store,” said Tuva. “But what people don’t realize is that the quality is extremely high. We do basically everything by hand in small batches. Nothing pre-processed or pre-packaged. It’s always fresh.” For the almond shakes, which are very popular, the team soaks the almonds themselves, blends them and adds raw cacao, vanilla beans and high quality sweeteners.
boosting foods and apple cider vinegar. “The cleanses came into play when Joy and I realized some of the products we were already producing could be cleanse products,” said Tuva. “We were both interested in [the process] and thought it would be fun to design and make a cleanse the way we would like it.” The cleanse is $159 and provides you with a powerful green juice, miso soups, almond shakes, kombuchas, and turmeric tonics. Single-day cleanses are also available as well as extended programs. “We have always believed that the foundation of good health is food that has been simply prepared from wholesome ingredients,” said Tuva. “Everything we make is thoughtfully prepared with love.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

The Death of Comedy Watching ‘Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween’ is a true horror STARS ★ZERO ★★ ★★
Rated PG-13 / 101 Min.
H
ere’s a first for me: I bought a ticket to see Geostorm and, due to screening room signs being renovated and being pointed in the wrong direction, I walked into the theater showing Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween instead. Both films started at the same time and, since this was opening night, I found myself in a packed house. I’ve never walked into the wrong movie before. Such was the level of my confidence that I was in the right place, I wasn’t immediately tipped off when the logo for Perry’s production company flashed across the screen. As the opening credits unspooled, I let out an audible “Oh, no...” but kept watching. After all, I like Perry and really enjoyed some of his movies. Surely, unexpectedly walking into his latest movie wouldn’t be a total loss. One hundred minutes later, I wondered if the audience watching Geostorm felt as ripped off as I did. Diamond White stars as Tiffany, a young college student who winds up sneaking off with her friends to a Halloween party.
20 OCTOBER 26, 2017
Her Dad, the out-of-touch Brian (played by Perry), is furious that his daughter would deceive him. Brian’s Mother, the outspoken Madea (also Perry) and his vulgar father Joe (Perry again) take off on a road trip to save their granddaughter, who is headed for a camp where murders reportedly took place. Every single scene goes on too long, as if Perry was too in love with his material and had no idea how far to take each bit. The performances range from bad, trying-toohard or downright robotic. Perry has often had a hard time ending his movies, often resorting to rushed wrap-ups. Here, the big reveal is poorly handled and lazily explained. The closing gag reel comes with no warning or credits playing over it–we’re suddenly just watching the cast goof around, which is as unfunny as every other scene here. Perry’s best films (namely “Why Did I Get Married?” and its sequel) exude an affection for the characters and a passion for the stories he tells. His latest is beyond amateurish. It’s unworthy of his distinct voice as a filmmaker. His cinematic craftsmanship may remain a work in progress but even his rocky film debut (Diary of a Mad Black Woman) didn’t feel like a just-make-it-up home movie.
People who watch this movie will envy the dead
One of Perry’s absolute worst films, For Colored Girls, is a rotten adaptation of the extraordinary play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enough by Ntozake Shange. The play was written as a poem, while Perry made a film with the dialogue half-poetry recitation, half Perry melodrama. It’s a remarkable failure but still illustrates an attempt to broaden his directorial abilities and showcases some great actresses, who rise above the limitations imposed on them. It was the last time Perry really tried to make a great film. I have a soft spot for his trashy guilty pleasure, Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, but most of his recent output are corny, moralizing comedies that might work better as the extended church skits they obviously are. Perry shouldn’t necessarily have to listen his critics but he could use constructive criticism on story structure. Boo 2! barely feels
like a movie, coming off more like a hastily assembled work in progress, intended to please Madea fans who deserve so much more than they’re getting. To put it mildly, the racial stereotypes, insensitivity and reliance on minstel showlevel yuks is off the charts. Spike Lee’s Bamboozled warned us about movies like Boo 2! Watching this is being trapped in comedy purgatory. Imagine having a sustained sinking feeling of watching someone remaking Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and pile on an endless stream of outdated racist jokes. The moments where Joe hits on an underage teen feel especially wrong-headed and out of touch. There’s no lesson, warmth or real laughs here. Perry’s considerable talent is not visible this time. As far as tossed-off Halloween-themed comedies go, this one endures as much as a stale candy corn rotting inside your stomach. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
When your usual sources of support and coconspiracy aren’t available, it’s time to search further afield. Luckily, there’s someone with whom you have regular contact that you’ve never yet teamed up with. You’ll probably be surprised by who I mean, because you’d never guess that this particular person could potentially be your perfect collaborator. Drop a few hints, watch for signs that an alliance is possible, then go for it. What do you have to lose, after all? Your other choices are nonexistent or unequivocally inappropriate. Chances are, things will work out even better than you had reason to expect. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Obviously, our planet is in trouble. Pretty much anyone who actually knows about this shit says that if we continue as we have our certain doom is a done deal. Our greenest efforts (resisted as they are by our greedy, shortsighted politicians) are still not nearly enough. Waiting for people to invent better technologies and tap into other sources of energy isn’t such a hot idea, either. We all have to make sacrifices. Are you really okay with having an overall negative impact on the planet? I think we’d all like to leave things better than how we found them. This week’s a good one to work towards that goal. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Since the millennium, our world has started to look more and more like the sci-fi future imagined in my youth. What’s that? You still haven’t gotten your jetpack or moon base vacation? Well, get on that! Your childhood conceptions of adulthood’s possibilities are closer than you think. I don’t care whether we’re talking about a hover car, or a kind of relationship, or some form of spiritual enlightenment. It’s not entirely out of your grasp. This week, actively reach for it–even if it means you have to practically invent it from scratch.
maintain–something about being “down to earth,” or perhaps a bit cynical. However, I’d hate to think you might have given up altogether on being excited (or showing it). There has to be something that would truly electrify you (besides a fork in a power outlet). We all want to see you squeal and jump up and down like an excited kid, and not just for the laughs. What would do that to you? Come on, give us a hint. We just might pick it up and run with it.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
How many examples of people following their dreams do you need to see, before you’ll give it a try, too? All the people I know (or know of) who are doing something cool are simply people who decided to take a leap of faith and try doing something new, without any real assurance that it’d succeed. It’s not easy, but it is easier than you think to make your labor of love replace your day job. The Internet is an amazing place to find like-minded people who’d help make it all happen. You might fall flat on your face, but unless you put yourself in a position to do exactly that, you’ll also never soar. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
You’re such a creature of habit that breaking that habit–even if it’s something you really want to do, which is good for you–can make you irritable and out of sorts. Don’t mistake the transition period for the new chapter, though. It will take you a while to settle into and enjoy your altered routines. In the meantime, you might feel a bit cranky. So what? Let yourself be cranky. Have faith in your original concept–what you’re doing is a good idea, even though that seemed a lot more certain before you actually gave it a try. Persist. You made the right decision. Once you see it through to its conclusion, that’ll be so obvious, you’ll wonder how you ever doubted it.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Halloween is a time for people to don disguises, right? Not necessarily. It can also be a chance for some of us to reveal hidden truths. In a way, we’re all witches in hiding who can only safely emerge once a year. Halloween is the perfect chance–if you’ve got the guts–to show off your secrets instead of concealing them. Consider it a test drive. You can laugh off anyone’s negative response–it was just a costume, right? That’ll give you a chance to retreat and rethink. However, I’m guessing that you’ll mostly get positive reactions. Wouldn’t it be great (metaphorically speaking, at least) if you never had to take this “costume” off again? PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Sometimes conflicts are unavoidable, no matter how hard you try. This week mismatched expectations could start fires. One of you isn’t aiming high enough, and settling for something adequate that could be much, much better. Are you the one who’s happy with mediocrity (perhaps without knowing it)? If someone’s pushing you to put in that extra effort, they probably have a reason. Humor them, even if you don’t see the point. And if it’s someone else who’s under-achieving, here’s your chance to relish a role you rarely get to play: inspired ass-kicker and whip-cracker.
Last night I dreamt about a pair of redheads who were both competing for the same political office. I commented: “Why do all redheads end up in politics or showbiz?” I should have asked that about Leos, though. Even if you’re not onscreen or currying votes, most Leos semi-regularly find a way to bask in the spotlight of people’s attention. It could be at work or socially, but Lions usually feel relatively unfulfilled unless they get to shine in a crowd, organizing or entertaining people. Where does this integrally Leonine trait get expression in your life? This week, work on finding at least one more place for it. Once you do, you’ll be so glad you did. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Buy a comfy couch. It’s not for you; we both know you’ll rarely actually sit on it long enough to notice. It’s for all the people who might visit you; they need to be cozy, since you won’t let them do anything while you bustle about preparing snacks and entertainment for your guests. You’ve been looking for ways to make your general selflessness less strenuous and simultaneously more effective. There’s one. You’ll discover more, if you try. All you need to do is really put yourself in other people’s shoes (or, in this case, butts).

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You’re just one person, but people can get wildly different impressions of you depending on how they get to know you. If someone’s only experienced you by viewing your social media, or picking through your garbage, or meeting you at work, they’re only getting a narrow, version of the real you. It’s virtually impossible for anyone to ever get to know the complete, real you, but it’s certainly possible for everyone to get to taste a few more slices of the whole pie. Since it’s a tasty dish everyone should get to try, won’t you make a few more servings available this week? TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
When was the last time you were truly thrilled about something? I know you Bulls have a reputation to
It’s not that you don’t have opinions. It’s that you don’t feel the pressure to always loudly express them (like those boisterous Leos you know), and that you’re open-minded enough to consider changing them when presented with compelling information. However, there are a few times when this approach is actually counterproductive. This week, you may be presented with a leadership void, when a group of people flounder because no one will step up and say what they think and guide them in any one direction. (Where are those bossy Leos when you need them, right?) Even if it’s all the same to you, the universe has dumped this one on your shoulders. It’s time to pick a side, and take everyone else there, too. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
