and the case stems from MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo’s arrest back in 2012 while he was photographing Maui Police Officers on Haleakala Highway during a traffic enforcement operation. “This is extremely topical to everyone in the state of Hawaii and it’s holding government accountable,” Russo told KITV News shortly after oral arguments ended. “There is nothing wrong with filming an officer in the line of duty. I don’t think I was breaking the law.” Oral arguments before the Hawaii Supreme Court took about an hour. Then the Justices left and the attorneys (Jake Of course the water's gone now

MAUI PD FINALLY RELEASES OFFICER TRISTIN HICKMAN’S BOOKING PHOTO And only 16 days after they arrested him! Way, way back on Oct. 26, the Maui Police Department sent out one of their press releases stating that they’d just arrested one of their own: Officer Tristin Hickman, 35, of Kahului. Cops rolling on a domestic violence call on the night of Tuesday, Oct. 24 from an unnamed 26-year-old woman had found Hickman, and had arrested him for Abuse of Family or Household Member. The release stated that he posted a $1,000 bail and has been reassigned to “administrative duties” while internal and criminal investigations are ongoing. Normally, such news releases–which are sent out two to three days after an arrest is made–are accompanied by booking photos. But Hickman’s wasn’t. On Oct. 27, I emailed Lt. Gregg Okamoto, the MPD public information officer, asking for Hickman’s booking photo. But Okamoto said he didn’t have it. “Sorry, I still can’t get a copy,” Okamo-

After that, the Supreme Court Justices returned and took the students’ questions. “It was a privilege to have my case presented in front of so many wellprepared young minds,” Russo told me after returning to Maui. “I’m glad the Supreme Court chose my case to use as a teaching tool. It was great to be in front of the highest court in the state, dealing with an issue that’s so important to all of us as we continue to embrace new technologies. This issue is important to all of

Of course the water had already receded by the time I made it out there. For over a week, I’d watched the nearly flooded Kealia wetlands slosh over the entrance to the boardwalk parking lot on North Kihei Road. I’d driven past there each morning, day after day, amazed that the wetlands on the makai side of the road were now nearly as lake-like as those on the mauka side. I’d seen the wetlands filled with water, but not this much water, and now the parking lot itself looked like it would soon vanish. The reason for the flooding is a mix of recent weather and land use, according to Courtney Brown, the Visitor Services Manager for the Kealia National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). “Yes, there is a high water level at Kealia Pond and subsequently the Kealia Coastal Boardwalk,” said Brown in a Nov. 8 email. “The high water is due to the changes in the water flow of the Waikapu watershed streams that flow into the backside of the refuge, less water being diverted from these streams for agricultural crops (i.e. sugar cane) and rainfall levels that are no longer at a drought level.” This is fascinating. Equally fascinating is Brown’s explanation that the wetland water level is what it is, and there’s not a whole lot the NWR people can do about it. “Unless there is a safety issue, the Refuge will not breach the sandplug at the stream outlet by the Kealia Coastal Boardwalk (where the waterflows under the State Highway via a small culvert into the Refuge mudflats and coastal dune habitat) as there are concerns related to the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act,” said Brown. “The rapid loss of water from the Ponds can cause nest failure, endanger chick survival and inhibit reproductive success for the endangered Hawaiian coot and Hawaiian stilt, and the large volume of turbid water can be detrimental to the nearshore reef and animals in the bay.” Though the water levels in the wetlands

were very high when Brown wrote her email to me (Nov. 8) and she didn’t “expect the water to recede anytime soon,” the water level receded dramatically just a few days later (probably due to evaporation or what Brown termed a “natural breach of the sandplug,” or maybe a combination of both). Still, it’s important to keep in mind that “the Refuge cannot control the water that comes into the wetlands,” said Brown. Which means the high water in the wetlands may soon return. “As we are coming into the wet season of winter, these conditions are likely to persist,” Brown said “The Refuge will be posting signs to notify the public of potential water in the parking lot and that altering the stream channel is prohibited as it can be harmful to wildlife and may subject one to criminal or civil fines.”

us, especially the students.” It could be some time–even as long as a year–before the Supreme Court hands down a decision.

to emailed back. “I’ll let you know when it’s available.” What? The MPD’s own PIO couldn’t get a copy of Hickman’s booking photo? I waited a week, heard nothing from Okamoto, and honestly forgot about it. On Friday, Nov. 10 my publisher (who had his booking photo back in the 2012 case cited above sent out pretty much immediately after he was arrested) reminded me about it. So I emailed Okamoto back, and that’s when he finally sent the photo, which you can see here. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE Please join Maui Pride in their observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance on Monday, Nov. 20 at Kam I Beach Park. The event will take place at 5pm. Organized by local transgender author and activist Danielle Bergan, the event will commemorate all transgender men and women who suffered violent, senseless deaths in 2017. During the event there will be a reading of the names of those who were killed this year. Everyone attending is welcome to participate. The event will end at sunset with a flower ceremony. All those who would like to participate should bring loose flowers. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), a nationwide event, was started by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was brutally murdered in 1998. “The Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day of solemnity,” Smith wrote in a 2016 Huffington Post article. “It is a day where we remember those we have lost, when we mourn, and when we consider that we live in a world where we or our friends could very well be next on the list. We know that we live in a time when the right to live our genuine lives without fear of murder is far from guaranteed. Our world is still a violent one, and we still have a very long way to go to see anti-transgender violence and prejudice wiped out.” -Anthony Pignataro

Nene breeding season has arrived, which means the endangered birds are more active along Crater Road in Haleakala National Park. Because the road bisects native shrubland where nene feed and nest, the birds are especially vulnerable to being killed by cars. HUI O KA WAI OLA WATER QUALITY TESTING EXPANDING IN SOUTH MAUI The volunteer-based water quality testing program known as Hui O Ka Wai Ola (Association of the Living Waters), has expanded the number of test sites on the island. The association is testing 12 South Maui shoreline locations every two weeks for six months, then every three weeks thereafter. The project will eventually be expanded to test a total of 24 South Maui locations. The Hui O Ka Wai Ola water qualitytesting project is the result of a partnership with Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (MNMRC), The Nature Conservancy, West Maui Ridge to Reef (R2R) Initiative and University of Hawaii Maui College, working with the State of Hawaii Department of Health (DOH). “Our goal is to support the Department of Health and Maui County efforts to improve coastal water quality so that coral reefs and native fish populations thrive, and our residents and visitors are safe,” said Robin Newbold, Co-founder and Chair of Maui Nui Marine Resource Council. “We want to help identify problem areas, so remedial action may be taken as needed.” More than 20 volunteers have signed up to work at the 12 new South Maui sites. They have completed intensive training to assure that they collect water quality samples according to strict Department of Health (DOH) standards set forth in the Hui’s Quality Assured Program Plan. The program will test for nutrients such

as nitrogen and phosphorous compounds, which can indicate pollution from wastewater, runoff from agriculture, landscaping and/or golf courses. Too many nutrients in the water can cause an increase in invasive algae (limu), which is damaging to coral reefs. The resulting data will be used to supplement DOH water quality monitoring on Maui and can be viewed at the Hui O Ka Wai Ola website. In addition, the program will eventually allow for additional testing during brown water events. Testing at 18 of the West Maui sites of the Hui O Ka Wai Ola program is currently funded by North Beach West Maui Benefit Fund; testing at the remaining six West Maui sites is currently funded by Napili Bay and Beach Foundation, as well as National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. “This expansion to South Maui is made possible with generous support from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Maui County Office of Economic Development and community donors,” said Amy Hodges, Programs and Operations Coordinator at MNMRC. “Funding for the laboratory and field equipment and initial start-up costs were provided by National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary (NMS) is providing space for storing the water testing equipment.” The three nonprofits that lead the project rely upon public donations and local grants to finance their work. “We hope that the public will support this valuable effort with donations on behalf of their favorite beaches in South and West Maui,” said Newbold. “We all want clean ocean water, healthy reefs and thriving local fish populations. This project is one way to help achieve these goals.” “In addition to the

millions of dollars in revenue directly and indirectly coming from coral reefs in Hawaii, we have to think of their ecological, cultural and recreational value. If we want future generations to benefit from Hawaii’s marine resources, we must act now to protect this valuable ecosystem,” said Newbold. as well as signs and radar devices to warn people about driving at high speeds. In the busy Headquarters Visitor Center area, where nesting pairs are often seen, fences have been installed to keep the birds off the road. Multi-lingual “Slow Down for Nene” posters are being distributed to rental car agencies on Maui, through an outreach program now in its fourth year. Park visitors also get a free card that lists ways to protect the endangered birds. “Slowing down and driving carefully are the most important actions visitors and local drivers can take to help this species,” said park superintendent Natalie Gates. “This is especially true on cloudy days, at dawn or dusk, or in other low light conditions. We need everyone’s help to protect the nene.”

MAUI MADE NOTW! Daren Young, 30, of Kahului, Hawaii, will need a good dictionary and thesaurus for the task ahead of him. On Oct. 27, Second Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo sentenced Young, who violated a protection order taken out by his ex-girlfriend to the tune of 144 calls and texts, to write down 144 nice things about his ex–without repeating any words. “For every nasty thing you said about her, you’re going to say a nice thing,” Loo commanded. The Maui News reported that Loo also meted out two years’ probation, a $2,400 fine and 200 hours of community service.

Three teenagers from Rahway, New Jersey, who call themselves the Rahway Bushmen, have been discouraged from their signature prank: dressing up as bushes and popping up in Rahway River Park to say “Hi!” to unsuspecting passersby. NJ.com reported in October that the Union County Police Department warned the Bushmen that they would be arrested if caught in action. The high school students started by jumping out to scare people, but decided to soften their approach with a gentler greeting. “We were trying to be harmless,” one of the Bushmen said. “It’s more or less an idea to try to make people smile.” But Union County Public Information Officer (and fun sucker) Sebastian D’Elia deadpanned: “It’s great until the first person falls and sues the county.” Or puts an eye out.

ANIMAL TROUBLEMAKERS Pilots were warned of “low sealings” at Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport in Utqiagvik, Alaska, on Oct. 23 because of an obstruction on the runway: a 450-pound bearded seal. Meadow Bailey of the Alaska Department of Transportation told KTVATV that the city, also known as Barrow, was hit by heavy storms that day, and airport staff discovered the seal while clearing the runway. However, staff are not authorized to handle marine animals, so North Slope Animal Control stepped in, using a sled to remove the seal. Bailey said animals such as musk ox, caribou and polar bears are common on the runway, but the seal was a first.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATH Nathan William Parris, 72, met his unfortunate end when a cow he was trying to move turned against him at his farm in Floyd County, Georgia, on Oct. 25. Parris was pinned against a fence by the recalcitrant cow, reported the Rome News-Tribune, which caused him severe chest trauma. First responders tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the Redmond Regional Medical Center emergency room.

IRONIES Workers at a Carl’s Jr. in Santa Rosa, California, were busy filling an order for 165 Super Star burgers for first responders to the Fountaingrove area wildfires on Oct. 26 when a grease fire broke out in the restaurant.

The fire started in the char broiler and then jumped to the exhaust system. Franchise co-owner Greg Funkhouser told The PressDemocrat the building was “completely torn up... We made it through the big one, only to get taken out by this.” When the person who placed the order arrived to pick it up, he saw six Santa Rosa Fire Department trucks in the parking lot and left, so Funkhouser handed out free burgers to “anyone around.”

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINAL Burglary suspect and career criminal Shane Paul Owen, 46, of South Salt Lake, Utah, was on the run from police on Oct. 24 when he dashed into a vacant church. A Salt Lake City SWAT team held a standoff at the church for more than six hours–until Owen called 911 to say that he was locked in the church’s boiler room and couldn’t get out. “Can you hurry?” he asked the dispatcher. “I need to talk to them first so they don’t ... shoot me,” Owen pleaded. The Deseret News reported he was booked on outstanding warrants for retaliation against a witness, drug distribution and identity fraud.

EWWWWW! Two doctors from the University of Florence in Italy have documented the case of a woman who has been sweating blood from her face and the palms of her hands for about three years. Roberto Maglie and Marzia Caproni wrote in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that the unnamed Italian woman couldn’t identify a trigger for the bleeding, but said times of stress would intensify it for periods of from one to five minutes. After ruling out the possibility that she was faking it, the doctors diagnosed her with hematohidrosis, a rare disease that causes blood to be excreted through the pores. They were able to treat her, but couldn’t completely stop the bleeding. The cause remains a mystery.

THINNING THE HERD In Paris, a 21-year-old “train surfer” was killed on Oct. 24 when he fell to the train tracks after hitting an overhead obstacle. His two friends, who were riding atop a train on Metro Line 6 with him, ran away from the scene, according to The Sun. The three had been attempting the stunt at the Bir-Hakeim Bridge during rush hour. The unnamed victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

ANGER MANAGEMENT? Katarian Marshall, 24, of New Orleans, Louisiana, apparently hit her limit of “fun” at a Chuck E. Cheese in Metairie on Oct. 29 and began “indiscriminately” spraying pepper spray on nearby patrons during an altercation that got out of hand. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office told The TimesPicayune that five adults and two children were treated for exposure to the spray at the scene. Marshall was charged with disturbing the peace by fighting. ■

HOW THE FOUR SEASONS MAUI IS USING ART TO HELP LOCAL CANCER PATIENTS BY ALEX MITCHELL

h Four Seasons Resort Maui will he ssoon host its inaugural “Showcase Under the Stars.” More than 45 Maui artists have donated works of Mau art to the auction which will benefit local cancer patients. Proceeds will go the Pacific Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society and the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu. Four Seasons Maui has been a longtime supporter of both Maui’s artists and local cancer efforts. In fact, for nearly three decades their annual Day of Hope 10K/5K Run/Walk has been popular with residents and visitors. “The Resort has long been committed to connecting our guests to the finest island artists through our daily Artists’ Showcase,” said Four Seasons Resort Maui’s General Manager and Regional Vice President Jean Claude Wietzel. “Now, we are pleased to open our doors to the community by of-

fering this special opportunity to bid on unique pieces that have been donated by the artists. We are truly humbled by their generosity, as well as that of other Maui artisans who are participating, as we come together in the common fight against cancer.” Featured art will come from all over the island, which will allow Maui’s art lovers and attendees a chance to view a variety of works and meet artists in an intimate setting. Lori Koprowski, Melissa Chimera, Jan Kasprzycki, Scott Reither and Tim Garcia are just a few of the participating artists (the collective value of the donated works exceeds $120,000). Art collectors can look forward to a diverse selection of varying mediums; mixed media, glass, ceramics, sculpture, paintings, photography, jewelry and more. I recently had an opportunity to chat with Rosina Potter, the Four Seasons Resort Maui’s Art Coordinator.

Q:

You were recently hired as the Artist Coordinator at Four Seasons? Is this is a new position? What are the main objectives of your job, and besides “Showcase Under the Stars,” can you share a bit about the ongoing projects you’re working on?

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has had a very successful Artists Showcase for 17 years. I feel very lucky to have been hired this summer to oversee the artists. This dedicated position is new for the resort and was created in their pursuit to evolve the program. The resort is continually developing the Artists Showcase. Finding ways to support and develop our exhibiting artists is my first priority. Many of the artists are able to sustain their artistic careers by showing here at the Four Seasons—something I’m especially proud of— and I hope to grow programming and increase

exposure for this talented group of artists. I’ve been lucky to work with Maui artists for the past 14 years. Panna Speas, owner of Maui Hands, introduced me to about 250 local artists while I was working for her fresh from the mainland. It was the best introduction ever. Since then I’ve managed various galleries and have spent most of my volunteer time with arts rts organizations like the Hui No‘eau, the MACC and most recently as an Art Maui board mem-ber. After seeing the Honolulu Biennial this spring, I realized I’ve been missing the arts, and this position has been a dream come true. e. In regards to “Showcase Under the Stars,” how did this event come into plan and how does it fit into the Four Seasons art program?

Q: A:

The resort has created the “Showcasee Under the Stars” event due to increassing requests from our guests and thee

local community on ways to contribute to our Day of Hope fundraising. The incredible generosity of each artist and vendor contributing to this event has allowed us to present a memorable evening of bidding and giving.

Q: A:

I see that the event is a Day of Hope fundraiser. How does it tie into the Day of Hope 5k/10k event?

Day of Hope is the resort’s fundraising mechanism to fight cancer. Saturday, Nov. 11 was the 28th annual Day of Hope Run, a 5 or 10k walk/run attended by over 400 participants and supported by over 100 Resort employee volunteers. Each department hosts individual fundraisers ranging from silent auctions and bake sales to golf tournaments. Last year, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea raised over $55,000, and this year we hope to raise over $70,000.

Q:

The event is benefitting the Pacific Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society and the Kapiolani Medical Center. Are there any specific programs that they’ll be funding? Is it going to research, patients, specific local projects? The resort has chosen these three particular foundations because they each serve as a direct resource for families on Maui going through cancer. The Pacific Cancer Foundation provides free support services for Maui’s cancer patients. Our donation to the American Cancer Society directly supports Hope Lodge, which provides free, home-like accommodations for cancer patients having to travel to Oahu for treatment. The Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children is a facility geared towards pediatric treatment. It’s very important to the employees of the Resort that the funds raised stay here in Hawaii and help local patients and their families.

A:

I’ve read that there’ll be 45-plus Maui artists showcased at the event. Are they all artists that already contribute to existing art programs at the Four Seasons?

Q: A:

The vast majority of artists donating their work to “Showcase Under the Stars” are members of our Artists

Showcase. We do have a piece donated from friends of the hotel: “The Twins,” Marcello and Allessio. Additionally, Sean Price and John Lindquist contacted us to offer a donation after hearing about the event from Lindquist’s wife, who is in the program. Being that artists from all over the island will be showcased, are there any specific artists that have only recently caught your eye? What draws you to their work?

Q:

That’s a hard question! I truly appreciate and admire each piece in the showcase. I think Melissa Chimera is creating beautiful paintings and has a lot of exciting work on the horizon. Jake Bonnell has been doing some really interesting collaboration work recently that we hope to show soon.

A:

Q:

In your opinion, and with your extensive background working with Maui artists and art galleries, what do you think is the biggest benefit for the artists that are part of this show? It’s very rare for an artist to have the freedom to show their own work in such a beautiful setting alongside so many other talented artists while interacting with our guests. I recently met with lifetime art patrons that were so impressed to hear how many of our artists are able to make a living from showing in our Artists Showcase. It’s not easy to be an artist—especially on Maui where the cost of living is so high. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to support such a unique and successful program.

A:

For art lovers and collectors, what can they expect to experience at “Showcase Under the Stars” that’s completely unique?

Q:

Everyone that chooses to attend the “Showcase Under the Stars” has the opportunity to acquire notable artwork while simultaneously donating to a greater good. The minimum bids for the work range from 10 percent to 50 percent of the value, so incredible deals are possible!

A:

Q: A:

Are there any artists being showcased that are cancer survivors? If yes, can you share a bit about their specific story with me? John “Colly” Norman is a sculptor who left our Artists Showcase last year for cancer treatment. He created a lamp especially for this event and is a cancer survivor and organ transplant recipient. Sadly, it’s hard to find anyone that hasn’t been affected by cancer, whether it was a personal experience or a close family member. What pieces do you feel are going to really wow the attendees? Are there any pieces that you’re already expecting competitive bids from?

Q: A:

Every piece that has been donated is remarkable. I truly was surprised to see their generosity. There are certainly some showstoppers. Some of the artists also donated to an employee art auction last week and solely based on those numbers, Lori Koprowski and Mike Worcester should receive many bids. We’ve offered a “BUY NOW” option on each piece that is just above retail value for anyone not wanting to wait out the bidding.

each artist will leave that night inspired to create something for next year’s fundraiser. Christina DeHoff has offered an captivating image called “Inspired Surrender” that was inspired by a cancer survivor.

Q: A:

In regards to the day of the event, is there anything extra special that should not be missed?

I’ve quickly learned that anything Four Seasons Resort Maui plans or hosts is impeccably beautiful and inspiring. Kayla McCracken, the Catering Manager, is unbelievable talented. Her creative direction, remarkable resources and energy will deliver a very special event. Chef Craig Dryhurst has created pupus from the generous donations from some of our vendors. This event is the result of a lot of effort from our Day of Hope Committee and tireless volunteers. We’re all inspired by those that are fighting cancer and feel inspired to contribute what we can. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E stories, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Q:

I imagine that the price points for the showcase have a pretty wide range based on each artist and piece. With the holiday season just around the corner, are there many opportunities for attendees to find holiday gifting items? Prints, smaller compositions, jewelry, etc. McKenna Hallett’s work is a perfect gift-giving price point. She handfabricates jewelry from found items— saving them from the landfill. She has offered a necklace for the auction made from aluminum scrap and electrical wire that would be appropriate for any formal event.

A:

Have any artists created pieces specifically for this show? Have any pieces been created specifically with cancer awareness and support in mind?

Q: A:

A number of the pieces donated have not been shown elsewhere. It is our hope that this year is so successful,

'It's All About Our Neighbors' TALKING STORY WITH TIARE ROBERSON ABOUT HER JAWS COUNTRY STORE their first jobs at the Jaws Country Store. Some started out doing dishes and worked their way up to the register or kitchen. It’s a great opportunity, especially considering that there aren’t many job prospects in the area. “I grew up in this community, and I love that I’m able to give back,” said Roberson. “That’s what makes this place great. It’s run by a team of amazing people that are no longer just employees. They have become family.” The food at Jaws Country Store is also special. Chef Koa Taylor and his team crafted a diverse and changing menu. The store has homemade turmeric and ginger iced tea, smoothies and all-day breakfast items

a tempeh banh mi sandwich. Tempeh is a meat alternative, healthier than tofu. It’s marinated, has an aged garlic aioli and is topped with pickled root vegetables, mint and cilantro. The sandwich can also be made with their house-braised brisket, which the Jaws Country Store offered at their recent appearance during the latest Makawao town party. The store loves being apart of the community and was also at the most recent Jaws Peahi Challenge, making breakfast burritos for the contestants and spectators. “It’s all about our neighbors and our community,” Roberson said. “I grew up in this community and have lived here

Greatest Mustache In The World Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ is fun but weak ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 114 Min.

I

n this lavish remake of Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Murder on the Orient Express, a long train ride through the snowy wilderness in 1934 is interrupted by a murder. An all-star cast embodies a handful of colorful characters, all of whom become suspects. Unfortunately for the killer at large, one of the passengers is Hercule Poirot (played by Kenneth Branagh, the film’s director), who, in his own words, is “probably the greatest detective in the world.” Branagh’s film begins on unsteady ground, as we open on the end of a case Poirot is solving in at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem). The scene does its job at conveying Poirot’s eccentric brilliance but something feels off. Branagh, whose Poirot is in every scene, teases us with the intricate but hidden layers of the Belgian detective’s mind, showing us the flamboyant surface levels of the character but concealing all else. His accent is unsteady but he still gives a strong, at times hypnotic performance. Although his film is promoted as an ensemble, this is more a vehicle for Branagh than anything else. The final mo-

ments tease a potential sequel, an adaptation of Christie’s Death on the Nile. Well, why not? With seemingly every studio trying to set up another potential franchise (and, outside of superhero and YA novel adaptations, mostly failing), it’d be nice to have an annual, grownup minded mystery with a star-studded cast. I’m a big fan of Branagh, whose film career is flush with highlights. His latest film exudes the filmmaking playfulness and acrobatic cinematography of his best work and stops short of being overly stylized (the key flaw in his severely overdone Michael Caine/Jude Law Sleuth remake). The problem is a script that is both quite clever and really confusing, with even helpful flashbacks failing to present this knotty whodunit with clarity. Despite Branagh adding some Hitchcockian camera angles, there’s a lack of excitement and tension. There’s also Sidney Lumet’s 1974 Murder on the Orient Express, which is a preferable Christie adaptation. To be fair, Branagh is a much better Poirot than Albert Finney and his version is 10 minutes shorter than Lumet’s. Yet, while Branagh’s cast is most impressive, there’s really nothing to compare with the sight of legends like Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergman, all in the same scene.

The mustache did it!

Still, everyone in Branagh’s cast is stellar, even when the roles are frustratingly small or one-note. Johnny Depp is superb playing a rough-around-the-edges, whimsyfree character and Josh Gad is, likewise, surprisingly grim and dialed back. In only her second major film role, Daisy Ridley is excellent, holds her own with acting heavyweights and seems destined to become a legend herself. The only thing more fun than seeing a dotty Dame Judi Dench get upstaged by a cute dog is watching Branagh

share a scene with the estimable Derek Jacobi. Michelle Pfeiffer is another stand-out, though I was hoping Willem Dafoe and Penelope Cruz would have more to do. Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express is a bumpy ride but still admirable and it works well enough of the time to recommend. This is something we rarely see anymore–a complex event film for adults and the potential start of franchise with more to offer than flashy CGI effects. I just hope the next Poirot thriller is stronger. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

I know your trust has been broken, but it’s no one’s fault, least of all the one you’re taking it out on. That’s like blaming your bank for getting robbed. How long are you going to keep your cash buried in the backyard or stashed inside your mattress? Forever? That’s your choice, I suppose; banks are overrated. But what about love? You’re practicing the emotional equivalent of keeping your heart hidden and buried, instead of invested and collecting interest. That’s your choice, too. But consider choosing differently. Your life would be richer for it, I promise. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You’re like a member of a band who’s spent weeks practicing for a gig where only five people show up. Your band is barely outnumbered by its audience. You could, of course, pack up your instruments and go back to the garage where you practice. Or you could do a wimpy abbreviated version of the set you planned. Or you could play your hearts out as if the place was packed to the gills with screaming fans. I think it’s a no-brainer which you should do. Give it your all for the sake of giving it your all this week, regardless of who might benefit.

fast. I’ve seen it. And those decisions, sometimes made on a whim, can have life-changing consequences, due to your extreme spiritual inertia–which translates into real world stick-to-it-iveness. I know a Taurus who was too lazy to go out and buy a pack of cigarettes, so they decided to quit. Ten years later they still haven’t had a smoke. You can change your life (and others’ lives) even when you’re just phoning it in. What might you accomplish (especially this week) if you actually set your mind to it?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

I overwrite. When composing anything–horoscope, email, novel–I write too much. Then I have to go back and pare it down, make it more succinct and simple than my original text. I suck at sprucing things up. It’s better for me to go too far and then pull back. My strategy ought to work well for you this week. Take whatever you’re doing—whether it’s writing a love letter, putting up Christmas decorations, or planning a Thanksgiving menu–to the Nth degree. Then rewrite the letter, take down half the decorations, and cross out a third of the menu, keeping only the best parts. I guarantee you’ll end up with something better than if you’d stopped at the point you thought was “just right.”

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

I know you like being an observer, and watching certain situations from the outside in. But don’t tell me that it doesn’t hurt when you get overlooked or forgotten. It’s not a slight that you didn’t get that invitation; it’s just an oversight. Still, that probably doesn’t make it feel much better. The situation right in front of you, for instance– are you really enjoying being the almost-invisible outsider? Why not wade in and get your hands dirty? Go get noticed. I’m betting the attention will be mostly positive. Get involved. The fly-on-the-wall thing is getting old.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

When people start to get depressed, it’s usually because their world has gotten too small and restrictive. The truth is, the world is huge and filled with insane variety. If you’re feeling down, break out of the little microcosm you’re trapped in. Watch some nature documentaries if you can’t think of any other way to remind yourself that there’s a phenomenally incredible universe full of things you never imagined out there. You haven’t seen and done it all. You haven’t even scratched the surface. This week, find a way to start doing at least that.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Quick, contact the authorities. You’ve surely beat the world record for holding your breath. How long’s it been since you took in a proper lungful of fresh, cool, clean, refreshing air? A few months, at least. Whatever constrictive force has restrained you from truly breathing and relaxing is about to let up, whether it’s a self-inflicted emotional corset or a predatory metaphorical boa constrictor. Your ribs might crack, and it might hurt to draw in that first delicious breath–but you’ll know it’s the good kind of hurt. Yawn, gasp, sigh and pant–and know that things will have to be at least a little easier from now on. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

It’s truly hard to create happy art. Making people experience pure joy isn’t impossible, but it’s way more difficult than disturbing, upsetting, or depressing them. It’s weird how people have more walls up to wonder than to horror, more resistance to happiness than misery. It takes a special talent to successfully subvert, penetrate, and transcend those tall, thick, invisible barriers and help people to experience delight in spite of their unconscious determination not to. You, my dear, whether you know it or not, have that talent. To not practice it–especially this week–would be a crime. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Venture to the dirtiest part of your home, that cubby, cabinet, corner, closet, or crawl space where you never go and rarely clean, home to dirt, dust bunnies and dead bugs. Scrub and scour it, even if it means slithering under the bed with a headlamp and a bucket, or moving stacks of boxes. Not only might you find something you thought lost forever, but it’ll be beneficial to your mental health. People have places just like this inside their heads. It’s good to occasionally relate that to the real world, where concrete actions can have psychological repercussions. Getting rid of all that crud can and will help you eliminate some of the internal crap, too. Clean it up, then shower. You’ll feel a million times lighter, happier, and just plain better, guaranteed. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Just like any lazy bull, the only person who can move you is you. When necessary, though, you can move

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Some Leos have a reputation for shallowness. This is more about laziness than about lacking emotional depth. Some Lions are content to know a little about a lot, or be pretty good at a huge variety of activities, but they never dig deeper than that. Are you a surface skimmer? Calling yourself a Renaissance person may make it sound nice but doesn’t change the fact that you’re leaving massive amounts of your potential virtually unexplored. Pick one or two things and dig deeper–a lot deeper. I reckon you’ll have to dig twice as deep as where you thought the bottom was before you’ll realize there actually is none. Hopefully by then the prospect will excite you rather than frighten you.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

You simply can’t foresee all the potential outcomes of your actions. That’s not to say you should stop trying; Virgos are so good at being prepared that you’ll probably still be covered for a good 80 percent of what might happen. However, please quit worrying about that remaining 20 percent. Enjoy how good you are at this, instead of flipping out about the possibilities you can’t anticipate or control. The future is a series of unknowns and trying to plan for every possible scenario is what makes some Virgos annoyingly neurotic. Keep your planning and preparations reasonable, especially this week. On the rare occasions when things veer outside of what you expected, try to laugh at the surprise, rather than freak out about it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Libras absorb a lot of shit through their own peculiar voodoo osmosis. I’ve seen Libras pick up accents, attitudes, and perspectives just by hanging out with people who possess them naturally. You’re like sponges, or mirrors, which can make a lot of really vain people drawn to you, and make some insecure ones run for the hills. This isn’t a judgment, just an observation. I think it’s also a good motivation to surround yourself with good people. Do those around you make you love and enjoy yourself more? If so, you’ve made some good choices. If not, you might want to look at that. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
