suspended from the bench for misconduct and is under fire now from repeated accusations of sexual misconduct and assault from at least five women, one of whom was just 14 when the alleged assault took place (despite years of voter suppression efforts against blacks, Moore lost to Democrat Doug Jones on Dec. 12). Like President Donald Trump, who is also facing myriad accusations of sexual harassment and assault from more than a dozen women, Moore denies it all. This is Trump’s gift to the party–a playbook that calls on the accused to deny everything and blame the accusers. In fact, Moore’s campaign spokesperson has gone so far as to call Moore’s accusers “criminals”–a grotesque act of pure misogyny. In other words, while the corporate media and entertainment industries are work-
in the GOP than the Democratic Party, I watched a number of liberal activists seethe with rage as Franken resigned. In their view, it’s both unfair and dangerous for the Democrats to expel men like Franken at the same time the Republicans steadfastly refuse to do anything about Trump and Moore–both of whom have been accused of far more reprehensible behavior than Franken. This game seems “rigged,” an old friend worried the Democrats were hobbling themselves before an unrepentant Republican Party told me on Facebook. It certainly is, I told him, though not in the way Trump said during the 2016 election. The dirty little secret of American history is that politics have been rigged from Day One–against indigenous tribes, blacks, women, homosexuals and pretty much everyone who isn’t a straight white male. Right now the

SENATOR MAZIE HIRONO AT FOREFRONT OF EFFORT TO GET AL FRANKEN TO RESIGN

Senator Al Franken, D–Minnesota, one of the most liberal members of the U.S. Senate, has resigned. With accounts of his alleged sexual harassment and assault piling up from multiple women, six female U.S. Senators called for him to step down on the morning of Dec. 6. One of them, Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, issued the following statement: “Today, I am calling on my colleague Al Franken to step aside,” Hirono said. “I’ve struggled with this decision because he’s been a good Senator and I consider him a friend. But that cannot excuse his behavior and his mistreatment of women. “TIME Magazine, by naming ‘The Silence Breakers’ as their ‘Person of the Year,’ is recognizing what women have always known: there are men among us who use their positions of power and influence to manipulate, harass, and assault women. What is new here is the women. We are, all of us, speaking out, naming names and demanding that the harassers take responsibility for their behavior. “I am proud of each of the women who has come forward, and heartened by the changing climate that has received their stories with acceptance and compassion. “My hope is that this moment for a cultural change will result in women no longer being viewed as objects or toys, but recognized for their abilities and achievements. As regular human beings. Women have endured this behavior, which for too long has been ignored and tolerated. But no longer. “We can only create a culture where women are respected as equals if we all step forward and be part of the change by holding everyone, especially our leaders, accountable.” By the end of the day on Dec. 6, the number of Franken’s Senate colleagues calling for his resignation had swelled to 20. While Fran-
ken has apologized for much of his behavior, he denied the most recent accusation, which comes from a woman who says he allegedly tried to forcibly kiss her in 2006. In any case, this move to eject Franken from the Senate comes at a remarkable time in Washington. On Dec. 5, long-serving Representative John Conyers, D–Detroit, resigned amidst allegations of sexual harassment from multiple women who worked for him. To be sure, both political parties have largely moved at a glacial speed to deal with the myriad allegations against some of their most powerful members–certainly a great deal slower than the media and entertainment industries, which are ejecting alleged serial sexual assaulters at an astonishing speed. While Congressional Democrats are cleaning house of accused serial sexual harassers, Republican Representative Trent Franks of Arizona did announce his resignation on Dec. 7 after news reports surfaced that he was trying to act out The Handmaid’s Tale in his office (subsequent stories reported that he had offered at least one of his female staffers $5 million if she’d bear his child). The Republican Party right now is a putrid cesspool of misogyny and white supremacist filth. In fact, the Republican Party threw all of its support behind Senate candidate Roy Moore–a judge who was twice

ing fast to expel the worst serial sexual harassers, the Republican Party has decided to make sexual assault a partisan issue. Given that misogyny generally runs a lot deeper
Overheard WOMAN: Is that a rock or a turtle? MAN: It’s a rock. WOMAN: Are you sure? I think it’s a turtle.
Republican Party has gone all in on white supremacist patriarchal rule. To give into that is to betray every woman who risks so much by standing up to sexual assault. “We can’t use victims of sexual harassment and assault as political pawns,” I told my friend. “But we can find candidates who AREN’T serial sexual assaulters and support them. We can volunteer for the campaigns or donate money. Don’t want to do that? Then we can help voter registration efforts and fight voter suppression. There are literally millions of ways we can fight Republicans who find no problem with supporting men accused of repeated sexual assault without having to support such men ourselves.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

forward to the next one.” Maui Pride will announce the distribution system for the 14 sponsored tickets next year. “We always try to get tickets to our events sponsored so underprivileged kids are able to attend,” said a Pride spokesperson. Coffee House Sessions: Music For A Cause is held the third Saturday of each month from 2pm to 4pm at Wailuku Coffee Co. Each month, Nevius will select a different cause to support. The Dec. 16 session will benefit Maui’s Holiday Toy Drive. The November event was sponsored by Wailuku Coffee and KAKU 88.5 FM, The Voice of Maui. Maui Pride was on hand distributing rainbow Love Is Love bracelets, and Art on Market donated rainbow unicorn rubber ducks, which they sell during their Ducks for Bucks fundraisers at Wailuku’s First Fridays. MAUI COFFEE HOUSE SESSIONS HELPS TEENS GET INTO 2018 ALTERNATIVE PROM More than a dozen teens will receive free entry into the 2018 Alternative Prom thanks to a new monthly fundraising gig, Coffee House Sessions: Music For A Cause. Inspired by the Greenwich Village coffee house scene, Maui’s musical storyteller and longtime New York author Kimo Nevius launched the monthly series in October with a session that benefited hurricane victims; the intimate acoustic gig featuring Nevius and singer/songwriter Steve Craig raised $500 with its simple “pass the hat” donation system. For the Nov. 18 session, Nevius tapped singer/songwriters Cheryl Rae Mullen and Kurt D. Russell to join him in supporting a LGBTQIA cause here on the island. After speaking with the Board of Directors of Maui Pride, Nevius decided that Alternative Prom was a perfect fit. Maui’s Alternative Prom is a high-end, lowprice, safe-zone dinner/dance held annually at the Marilyn Monroe House. It’s designed for LGBT teens, allies, and anyone who feels they don’t fit in with their school’s traditional prom event. With community sponsorship, organizers are able to keep the ticket price down to $10, which includes a buffet meal, photos, DJs and light shows; ticket prices for traditional proms range from $75 and up. “I think alternative prom was more fun than our school prom,” said one teen attendee. “My gay friends and straight friends–couples, singles and friend groups–had a great time. PBS HAWAII ADDS CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR TO LINEUP PBS Hawaii launched Christiane Amanpour’s new global affairs interview program on Monday, Dec. 11. The new half-hour show featuring acclaimed journalist and war correspondent Amanpour will air at 11pm weeknights. The PBS national organization announced it will distribute this CNN International program on an interim basis, and is finalizing plans for a second public

The J. Walter Cameron Center will receive a much-needed cash donation by providing volunteers for the upcoming Sentry Tournament of Champions. The Center is seeking more than 50 volunteers for the tournament, which runs from Jan. 3-7 in Kapalua; once again the JWCC is participating in the tournament’s charity program, which has supported Maui nonprofits for many years. The funds will help the JWCC provide extensive support to the 16 resident nonprofit agencies it serves; the donation will be primarily earmarked for ongoing maintenance and facility upkeep. Through the years, the tournament and host organizations have donated nearly $6 million to Hawaii community charities. The designated beneficiaries for 2018 are Boy Scouts of America–Maui County Council, Friends of Children’s Justice Center, Hale Makua Health Services, the Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui and Lahainaluna High School Foundation. Donations are also made to Hawaii State Jr. Golf, Lahaina Jr. Golf and Maui Jr. Golf. By volunteering to work a shift with the JWCC at the Sentry Tournament, members of the community can make a direct and positive impact on the lives of others; the opportunity provides an option for those who may not have the financial resources to donate, but still want to give. Volunteers will be tasked with directing cars in the tournament parking lot. Shifts are approximately five to six hours and volunteers will be required to stand during the duration of their shift. Lunch and water will be provided. There are morning and afternoon shifts each day. Contact JWCC Marketing and Develop-

For $12, Xiong will scrap the inside of his customers’ eyelids using a straight razor, according to Reuters. Xiong suggests being “gentle, very, very gentle” when performing eyelid shaving, or “blade wash eyes,” as the technique is known in Mandarin. A Chengdu ophthalmologist, Qu Chao, says shaving may unblock moisturizing sebaceous glands along the rim of the eyelid, leading to a more comfortable and refreshed feeling. “If he can properly sterilize the tools that he uses, I can see there is still a space for this technique to survive,” Qu added.

A 35-year-old Indian man employed a unique method for dealing with his depression: swallowing metal. Maksud Khan was rushed to surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, India, after developing severe abdominal pains, according to Metro News. An endoscopy showed that Khan had “coins, nails and nut-bolts in his stomach,” said Dr. Priyank Sharma, who led the surgical team. In late November, surgeons removed 263 coins, 100 nails and other metal items, including razor blades and dog chains, from Khan’s stomach. His family had no idea he had been ingesting metal, and Khan promised doctors he would never eat metal again.

In Iowa, autumn is breeding season for deer, when the animals can get a little wacky and try to cross roadways. It’s also the time of year when the Iowa Department of Transportation begins fielding questions from drivers asking why deer crossing signs aren’t erected at safer spots for deer to cross. “This sign isn’t intended to tell deer where to cross,” the Iowa DOT helpfully posted on its Facebook page on Oct. 24, according to the Des Moines Register. “It’s for drivers to be alert that deer have been in this area in the past.” State Farm Insurance reports that Iowa drivers have the fourth-highest likelihood in the U.S. of hitting a deer. Coincidence?
GOOD DOG! Rocky, an enterprising seven-month-old border collie in Devon, England, took the command “bring the sheep home” a little too literally in early November when he herded nine sheep into his owner’s kitchen. “I was in the kitchen and heard a noise,” Rocky’s owner, Rosalyn Edwards, told the BBC. “I turned around and the sheep were just standing there. It was funny at the time, but then there was quite a lot of wee, poo and mud everywhere.” The sheep stood around for a few minutes, then allowed themselves to be shown out the front door.

cent church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, one of those present asked if anyone had brought a gun to church. One man spoke up and said he carries a gun everywhere, reported WATE-TV, and produced the gun, emptying the chambers before passing the weapon around. When the owner got the gun back, he replaced the magazine and recharged the chamber–accidentally squeezing the trigger and shooting himself in the hand and his wife in the abdomen. Both victims were taken by helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
LAST WISHES On Oct. 10, Richard Lussi, 76, of Plains Township, Pennsylvania, succumbed to heart disease. But before he died, he made sure his family knew there was one thing he wanted to take with him: a cheesesteak from Pat’s King of Steaks in Philadelphia. “No onions because they’ll come back to haunt me!” Lussi told his family. So the day before Lussi’s funeral, his son, John, grandson, Dominic, and two friends drove to Philly, where they ate cheesesteaks and bought two extra for Lussi’s casket. John told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the funeral director advised not putting the sandwiches in the coffin until after the viewing, “because people would take them.” Pat’s owner Frank Olivieri Jr. said he was flattered and proud that his cheesesteaks were held “so dear” by someone. “Maybe it’s a bribe for St. Peter,” he added.
IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD Lisa Cramps moved into a new home in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England, this fall and quickly discovered a mysterious manhole cover in her backyard. Rather than ignore it, Cramps dug up the cover and unearthed a World War II-era bunker underneath. Neighbors informed Cramps that the shelter pre-dates her house and originally had two stories, with the upper level partially above ground. “It’s very exciting to find this in our garden,” Cramps told Metro News. “I love Second World War history, and my mission now is to find out exactly why it’s here.”
POLICE REPORT Stacy Scott of Anchorage, Alaska, arrived home on Nov. 24 to find thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing and jewelry missing, along with a signature item, George the mounted zebra head, which was a gift from a friend. The thief was bold enough to call a taxi to use as the getaway car and loaded the zebra head into its trunk–all of which was caught on surveillance camera at Scott’s home. Anchorage police tracked down and arrested Desiree Fuller, 38, for felony burglary and theft, and recovered most of Scott’s items. But George remained at large until the cab driver saw a story on KTVA-TV and contacted them–he had been holding the zebra hostage because Fuller neglected to pay her cab fare. In the spirit of the season, George is home for the holidays. ■

WILL THE COUNTY OF MAUI’S PLAN TO PROVIDE PUBLIC WIFI AT ITS FACILITIES HELP DESTROY HUMAN CIVILIZATION?* By Anthony Pignataro

hances are this sentence you’re reading right now is printed on a piece of paper. Maybe it’s a quirk of Maui, or just an accident of history, but even in our so-called “Digital Age,” most of MauiTime’s readers still pick up our print edition each week. Of course we publish online, and distribute our stories and other content through social media like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, but for now at least, most of our readers still prefer reading an old-fashioned newspaper.

How long this will continue is anyone’s guess. More people are going online every day, and the most recent numbers from Internet World Stats say that 51 percent of the global population–about 3.9 billion people– have access to the internet. The percentages in the U.S. are much higher. According to the 2016 edition of the Hawaii Data Book, a little less than 82 percent of the population has some sort of internet access. It’s higher still here in Hawaii, where nearly 86 percent of the population has internet access.
Nonetheless, the County of Maui wants to make it even easier for people here to get online. On Dec. 5, county officials said they were sending out a Request for Information (RFI) to find out how feasible it is to establish public internet access at various facilities throughout Maui County. “The County of Maui desires to provide its citizens with access to the internet at various public facilities throughout the County,” states the county’s RFI. “Internet access serves as a critical connection be-
tween citizens, their community, and the world. Providing citizens with access to the internet at various public facilities will further help enhance our quality of life and reinforce the county’s commitment to a connected community.” The County’s plan is to start by providing free wifi (as well as “premium” access for a fee) at places like the Lahaina Civic Center, War Memorial and the South Maui Gymnasium, which is still under construction. helps to explain why, during the 2016 presidential race, the site [Facebook] was swamped with misinformation and outright fraudulent fake news, with actors ranging from foreign troublemakers to make-a-buck hucksters to ideologically motivated political groups,” Tufekci wrote in her Times essay. And it’s not just Facebook that poses a threat to civil society. Academics and analysts all over have especially bleak views of our shared online future–one plagued
“
whether they’re going after new moms, dog lovers or neo-Nazis. The algorithms don’t know the difference, and Facebook’s customers are not its users.” The result is everyone’s Facebook pages fills with garbage–especially political memes of dubious value and stories that are outright false. It turns out that fake news, in the world of Facebook, is insanely profitable. And there are no gatekeepers left to tell users the difference between reality and fantasy.
But the internet also flattens distinctions between sources, rewards violent white supremacist extremists with free communication channels and allows for unmatched bullying and threats, especially of women. Think about the grocery store. There, at the checkout counter, are racks for magazines like People, and other racks for rags like The National Enquirer. The two racks are very distinct, and decades of tradition are enough to let customers know that People, while filled with intellectual fluff, is published using modern journalistic techniques, while the stories in publications like the Enquirer are far less likely to be true. There’s nothing like that on the internet. Sure, Facebook has ways for users to report fake news, but that’s next to use-
by troll attacks, cyberbullying and doxing (making public a person’s home address against his or her will). Here are just three I found in Pew Research Center’s Mar. 29, 2017 report The Future of Free Speech, Trolls, Anonymity and Fake News Online: SUSAN ETLINGER Industry analyst with at Altimeter Group “In the next several years we will see an increase in the type and volume of bad behavior online, mostly because there will be a corresponding increase in digital activi-

to start in March 2018), similar access would go up at the county’s various community centers. County Managing Director Keith Regan says this will be great for everyone. “The internet has become a necessity and is no longer a luxury of life,” Regan said in a Dec. 5 County news release. “It’s how we communicate, share our thoughts, interact with one another and have become an integral part of our collective lives. We’ve all been at a basketball game, a concert, a football game or other events at our public facilities and been challenged with connectivity issues. Our hope is that, through the development of a publicly available internet solution at our facilities, we will be able to provide internet access at no cost for basic usage and nominal cost for higher bandwidth access.” This is a good thing, right? I mean, anything that makes it easier for people in Maui County to access the internet would be good for MauiTime. But Regan’s quote is rather simplistic–while the internet has certainly changed the world over the last two decades, it’s also done so in complex, sometimes dangerous ways that we’re still struggling to understand. Yes, the internet gives me unparalleled access to all sorts of information I never had even just a decade ago. It lets me communicate with people in real time halfway around the world, monitor news from dozens of reporters on many more dozens of subjects and watch programs like GLOW and Book of Negroes (as seen on the online video channels Netflix and Hulu, respectively) that would never exist on American network television. But the internet also flattens distinctions between sources, rewards violent white supremacist extremists with free communication channels and allows for unmatched bullying and threats, especially of women. And I haven’t even gotten to Facebook yet. Launched in early 2004, Facebook is among the most popular social media sites in the world. In fact, about two billion people use the site every month. And it’s destroying the world. We have to remember that the users who build and maintain Facebook pages are NOT Facebook’s actual customers. No, those are people who buy ads on Facebook. The rest of us–and all the precious data and photographs we post there–are what’s being sold to those customers. Facebook works because its computer algorithms can target paid ads to users. This is brilliant in business but dangerous in civil society because it ends up stovepiping information and propaganda with no way (other than community policing) to make sure any of it is actually true. “Facebook is approaching half-a-trillion dollars in market capitalization because the business model–ad-targeting through deep surveillance, emaciated work force, automation and the use of algorithms to find and highlight content that entice people to stay on the site or click on ads or share pay-for-play messages–works,” University of North Carolina Associate Professor Zeynep Tufekci wrote in a Sept. 23 2017 New York Times op-ed. “The trouble is Facebook’s business model is structurally identical whether advertisers are selling shoes, politics or fake diet pills, and

less. Twitter has its blue “verified” check marks, but how valuable are those if actual Nazis get them, too? The result, which we all saw during the 2016 presidential election, is chaos. “This, combined with deep surveillancebased profiling, enormous scale, automation, lack of sufficient human oversight and a tendency to react to public relations crises instead of making proactive changes
ty… Cyberattacks, doxing, and trolling will continue, while social platforms, security experts, ethicists, and others will wrangle over the best ways to balance security and privacy, freedom of speech, and user protections. A great deal of this will happen in public view. The more worrisome possibility is that privacy and safety advocates, in an effort to create a more safe and equal internet, will push bad actors into more-
hidden channels such as Tor [a tool for browsing the internet anonymously]. Of course, this is already happening, just out of sight of most of us. The worst outcome is that we end up with a kind of Potemkin internet in which everything looks reasonably bright and sunny, which hides a more troubling and less transparent reality.” VINT CERF Google VP and co-inventor of the Internet Protocol “The internet is threatened with fragmentation… People feel free to make unsupported claims, assertions, and accusations in online media… As things now stand, people are attracted to forums that align with their thinking, leading to an echo effect. This self-reinforcement has some of the elements of mob (flash-crowd) behavior. Bad behavior is somehow condoned because ‘everyone’ is doing it… It is hard to see where this phenomenon may be heading… Social media bring[s] every bad event to our attention, making us feel as if they all happened in our back yards–leading to an overall sense of unease. The combination of bias-reinforcing enclaves and global access to bad actions seems like a toxic mix. It is not clear whether there is a way to counterbalance their socially harmful effects.” CORY DOCTOROW Writer “The internet is the natural battleground for whatever breaking point we reach to play out, and it’s also a useful surveillance, control, and propaganda tool for monied people hoping to forestall a redistributive future. The Chinese internet playbook–the 50c army, masses of astroturfers, libel campaigns against ‘enemies of the state,’ paranoid war-on-terror rhetoric–has become the playbook of all states, to some extent... That will create even more inflammatory dialogue, flamewars, polarized debates, etc.” And all this was written before the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) signaled its intent to destroy Net Neutrality, which prevents internet providers from speeding up or slowing down web browsing or blocking websites and content altogether. Look, don’t get me wrong. Like many, many people, I use the internet every day. I rely on it for work, and used it extensively for this story. But browsing the internet– even just social media–requires tremendous critical thinking. Without that, we’re all just blundering around a virtual world full of hate, greed and violent threats–a world that will only get bigger. “Social media’s affordances, including increased visibility and persistence of content, amplify the volume of negative commentary,” said University of Maryland Assistant Professor Jessica Vitak in the Pew Center report. “As more people get internet access–and especially smartphones, which allow people to connect 24/7–there will be increased opportunities for bad behavior.” *The chance of this is, of course, infinitesimal, but who actually reads the fine print anymore? ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

'Home Cook Right!' POKE HALE GRINDZ OFFERS SOME OF MAUI’S TASTIEST FISH Poke Hale Grindz has a wall of return customers’ orders behind the poke counter. These can be quickly made when a familiar face walks in, adding to the family atmosphere. Recently Vargas and his family won a fishing tournament on Lanai, one Vargas has been competing in all his life. After, the prize Marlin was smoked. I got to try some, and it was some of the most delicious fish

At the back of the shop are sheets with all the available ingredients. You select what you want, or choose pre-set classic combinations, then pass the sheet through the window where Vargas makes each bowl.

Fresh plate lunch While we were chatting in the kitchen a couple walked in and gave Vargas their orders. Vargas began mixing the fresh fish with raw Hawaiian salts. “We’re small but our standards are high,” Vargas said. “The other day I had a customer who’d been eating Poke his whole life and had never tasted the real Hawaiian salt. It should still be crunchy when you bite it.”
I’ve ever tasted. Their winning hand-crafted spears hang above the counter, a great piece of art created by Vargas’ brother. “We want people to feel welcome,” Vargas said. “Nobody is outside of the family!” ■ jen@mauitime.com For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

oke Hale Grindz is a testament to the age-old expression, if you want something done right, do it yourself. Anthony Vargas Jr. and his family cook fresh home-style dishes every day for locals and tourists alike in this 100 percent local shop in Wailuku.
Vargas, a Maui native, worked in many kitchens on the mainland while growing up but says his culinary prowess comes from the family recipes and traditions passed on from his sixth generation Hawaiian family. His grandfather, is the source of many of his kitchen skills. These recipes have helped Vargas and his family stand out in the community and provide breakfast lunch and dinner to their loyal patrons from 6am to

From the outside Poke Hale Grindz looks like your everyday convenience store, but inside is a full functioning kitchen, with an organization and cleanliness that rivals some full-time restaurants. Vargas was in the back, hard at work, whisking two massive bowls of banana bread that he was about to put in the oven. “My motto is don’t expect everything the same twice, because it’s home cook right!” he said.

AMY HANAIALI`I RETURNS TO THE RITZ-CARLTON KAPALUA
Amy Hanaiali‘i
A
my Hanaiali‘i, an 18-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, is celebrating a triumphant return to the RitzCarlton Kapalua’s Anuenue Room. She has a brand-new show that takes the audience on an interactive journey through Hawaiian culture from the early 1900s to today. The Anuenue Room has a special place in Hanaiali‘i’s career, as it was her first pro-
fessional residence after graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the School of Performing and Visual Arts in San Diego. The show room hosted Hanaiali‘i five nights a week, and has been closed since she left back in the early '90s. Now 16 albums and a world’s worth of travel later, Hanaiali‘i is back performing with her full band and 40 feet of holographic screens. “What I’m most excited about is that it’s

something different,” she said. “It’s something I can connect the audience to what we are here in Hawaii. It really helps them understand not only Hawaiian music, but the concept of Aloha, and the concept of living here in Hawaii.” The hour and a half long show features some amazing covers of classic by Tina Turner and Etta James, as well as a healthy dose of R&B, Christmas favorites, hula dancing, and of course original and traditional Hawaiian songs. Set up all around the stage, on the walls and roof of the Anuenue Room are visual projections that coordinate with Hanaiali‘i’s songs. Drone footage of Maui waterfalls, and beautiful aerial shots of Ho‘okipa and the Maui country side help Hanaiali‘i tell her story of Maui and the love she has for her island home. The show also tells the story of her great-grandmother, an inspiration for not only Amy but countless Hawaiian artists and musicians. The late Jennie Napua Hanaiali‘i Woodd was one of the original hula dancers at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki back in the 1930s. The show was such a hit that her entire troupe was asked to come to New York City to help open The Hawaiian Room at the Lexington Hotel, a show that would go on to sell out seven nights a week for 60 years. “The prohibition had just ended, alcohol was legal again, and all these cultures were ascending throughout the world, through Ellis Island,” said Hanaiali‘i. “Everybody was depressed and missed their homelands, their food and their culture, so where did they go? They went to the Hawaiian Room.” This melting pot of innovation and cultural expansion is one of the most remembered times in American history. Tiki and
hula were more popular than ever before, and a whole new world of class was being brought to the American people. Everyone who was anyone was in the Hawaiian room, including Sidney Poitier, Marlon Brando, Etta James and Katherine Hepburn. Hanaiali‘i’s show pays homage to this and includes some incredible recovered footage of her grandmother’s performances in the Hawaiian Room, as well as some beautiful reimagined Hawaiian covers of classic 1930s and ‘40s tunes. The show is an intimate experience and Hanaiali‘i and her band laugh and banter with the crowd, teaching some Hawaiian words to the audience, and even requesting audience participation during the chorus of one of Hanaiali‘i’s original Hawaiian songs. Her “kick booty band,” as she calls them, is also an incredible addition to the night that shouldn’t be overlooked. Kamuera Kimokeo, guitarist and Ukulele player, Michael Ruff on the keyboards and grand piano, Kana Pikini on bass and Darryl Pellegrini on the drums. After Hanaiali‘i’s show ends around 8:30pm, there’s a meet-and-greet and cocktail hour featuring jazz pianist Sal Godinez, Hanaiali‘i’s original piano player during her first shows at the Ritz in the 1990s. It’s a tremendous night of music and visuals that tell the story of overcoming great obstacles, patience and the beauty of the world and Hawaiian culture. The show takes place every Friday night at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua through Dec. 22.You can buy tickets ($119.95/person) at Lifeisaloha.com or at the hotel concierge desk. ■ jen@mauitime.com For more A&E stories, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

any years ago, my brother sent me a DVD of The Room for my birthday. I had heard of the 2003 Tommy Wiseau-directed film, which had become a cult favorite in Hollywood but, at the time, wasn’t available in most parts of the country. My wife and I howled throughout our first viewing. I must have watched it three times over the course of a day. A decade later, Greg Sestero, Wiseau’s friend and The Room co-star, wrote a tell-all book about the experience called The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made. I read most of the book aloud to my wife on a long flight and we laughed until we cried. Now, we have a movie about how the driven, good-looking but only semi-talented Sestero (played by Dave Franco) befriended the confident but bizarre Wiseau (played by James Franco) and made a movie so hilariously awful, it made them both cult movie legends and respected artists. The true story at the heart of The Disaster Artist, the wonderful new comedy directed by/starring James Franco, is how an odd friendship between Sestero and Wiseau fueled their wacko passion project and propelled
them from obscurity to infamy and adoration. If you’ve never seen or even heard of The Room, you’ll still love The Disaster Artist, which stands alone but will play like a treasure trove for fans of the debut work from “Wiseau Films.” Wiseau is the greatest special effect in his movie– his long, jet-black hair, muscular physique, impossible-to-pin-down accent and most unusual manner of speaking make him seem like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s strung out older brother. With the aid of a facial prosthetic, a mostly spotless vocal impression and a great deal of soulful longing, Franco makes Wiseau deeply sympathetic and tremendously funny. Having younger brother Dave play Wiseau’s soul mate is smart casting, as the relationship between Wiseau and Sestero has a sibling-like richness that the brothers Franco utterly nail. There’s great supporting bits from Seth Rogen (in an admirably weed-free turn), Jackie Weaver, Melanie Griffith and many celebrities playing themselves. One of the best scenes features Judd Apatow testily offering Wiseau professional advice that is somehow both cruel and extremely practical. To say the least, Franco has made a lot of movies. In addition to lavish, studio franchise films (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Oz The Great and Powerful and Alien: Covenant) and
This film is horrible, awful, pathetic... oh wait, it's mine.
adored art house hits (Spring Breakers, Milk and 127 Hours), he’s directed dozens of films in his spare time. He’s done lots of TV, even famously appearing on 54-episodes (so far) of General Hospital (playing himself... as a serial killer!). I can’t keep up with everything he does but it’s hard not to notice that, on occasion, he appears distracted and phones in his work. Thankfully, Franco’s performance as Wiseau is among the sharpest in his insanely prolific career. There are some loose ends and gold nuggets of info I missed from the book: no mention is made of Sestero’s appearance in Patch Adams or Wiseau’s baffling decision to use green screen during a rooftop scene. Thankfully, this stays
mostly faithful to Sestero’s jaw-dropping chronicle and recreates some priceless sequences. I could watch scenes of Franco-as-Wiseau badly directing/acting scenes of The Room all day. There isn’t much in the way of competition but this is easily the funniest movie I’ve seen all year. Is The Room really the best bad movie ever made? Its definitely as uproarious as the other so-bad-it’s-great hall of famer, Troll 2. My pick would be the hysterical and astonishingly inept 1991 Vanilla Ice vehicle, Cool As Ice. Perhaps someday we’ll see a movie about the making of that beloved stinker and find a great actor in the role of Vanilla Ice. I suggest James Franco. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Invest in your future. There’s nothing wrong with living in the moment, and you Archers are especially good at it. But there’s something to be said for planning ahead and setting yourself up for nice moments to live in later, especially when you’re gifted with an awesome opportunity to get a lot of return on your investment, be it money, time, energy, or emotion. This week ought to present you with just such a chance, and you should grab it and make the most of it. It’s really quite simple. Take this week to plan ahead and set yourself up nicely, or take many weeks later to just kick yourself for not doing it. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) This week promises to be one of the busiest, astrologically, and the most dramatic, socially, this year. I see you quivering with dread, because if there’s one thing you’re not good at, it’s drama. There’s a part of you that already can’t wait for the holidays to be over with. However, the sooner you accept that you’re a key player in this week’s soap opera and that skipping out on the show is simply not an option, the better. One way or another, you’ll be dragged (probably kicking and screaming) onto set and forced to perform. Why not just accept (and, indeed, embrace) the role you’re stuck in, and do the best you can to deliver a brilliant, inspiring performance? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You think your life’s hard? Bullshit. Get over yourself. Feeling sorry for yourself or moping of any kind is strictly forbidden this week, Aquarius. At the moment, your life is cake compared to most of the rest of ours. If it feels difficult, that’s because you’re just being way too wimpy about it. It’s big picture time, sweetheart. Recognize that almost everyone around you is worse off in some way than you are. They need your help, help you’ll only be able to give if you’re not immersed in your own Lite version of misery. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Watch in amazement as many of the people you know are thrown into the kind of inner and outer turmoil you’re already accustomed to in your dayto-day. This week you get to be the stable one that everyone clings to as they navigate all the confusion. You rock at surfing this kind of chaos–even if you feel hopelessly inadequate, remember that it’s all relative; you’re still loads better than anyone else you know. Fish people out of the mess, wring out their sopping wet clothes, hand them a cup of hot cocoa, and tell them it’s going to be alright (as only you can, since you know). Someday, my dear, they’ll return the favor. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your inability to tell when your unique ideas are inspired or insane is both a strength and weakness, and one of the many things I love about you. However, there are times to ignore the naysayers, and times to take them seriously. This week, when folks you respect try to divert you from the path you’re on, don’t just bowl them over and tear on down the road anyway. Your destination will still be there in a month if you decide later that you do really need to go there. For now, forget about all that and let your friends sit you down and stuff you full of Christmas cookies and eggnog. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re stuck in a talent rut! Please recognize that there are good and bad times to exercise your gifts, and try to be more flexible about which ones you use when. Break your habits. Your green thumb, for instance is mostly wasted at this time of year; even the houseplants are sort of lackadaisical about it. Take a vacation from your most-used talents this week, since they’re hardly calledfor, and revisit ones you’d nearly forgotten about, but which would be much more handy right now. The houseplants will survive without your most top-notch care, but some of the people in your life might wilt without it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Don’t get carried away by your vivid imagination; this week it’s likely to take you preposterous places that’ll only make you crazy, by promising you riches
you’ll never get, threatening you with disasters that’ll never happen, or both. You’re a kite in hurricane winds. You’d better be sure someone reliable and strong is hanging onto the string. Without that anchor, you’re worse than useless, likely to do a nose dive or get stuck in a tree. Who’s your rock? Be sure they know it. With their help you can soar; without it, you’ll only crash and burn.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Are you wondering why people are always pushing your buttons? It’s because you wear them on your forehead, silly, and they’re surrounded by blinking neon signs that say “Push me.” You’ve got to work on your poker face. When people know how to wind you up so easily, it’s very hard to resist doing exactly that. Don’t let someone know they’ve accidentally brushed up against one of your sore spots unless you’re absolutely certain they can resist the temptation to keep poking at it. Most people can’t, so if they land a lucky hit, get better at hiding it. If they never know how close they came to sinking your battleship, they won’t keep firing shots in that direction. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You have a long history of being churned through the gossip mill as well as of buckling yourself into the epic rollercoaster of hopes and dreams. Both can be harrowing but fun rides, but only the latter will actually get you anywhere good. This week, resist the temptation to jump onto the high-speed merry-go-round of pettiness and drama. It won’t take you anywhere, and you’ll come off it without any change in your pockets, feeling queasy and sick-at-heart. The other ride’s just as likely to empty your pockets, and scare the shit out of you, but you’ll also feel inspired, and probably get right back in line to ride it again. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Don’t try to paddle backwards, just because you see rapids ahead. That’s actually the worst thing you can do. You’re in the grip of a current, and the most you’d accomplish by frantically trying to reverse direction is to hold your position for a little while, and exhaust yourself in the process, thereby making the imminent whitewater that much more harrowing and dangerous. No, what you should do when you glimpse the choppy, chaotic scene ahead is plunge immediately into it, since right now your energy and concentration are as high as they’re going to get. Waiting will only make the ride more dangerous. Marshal your courage, Virgo, and dive in–now. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) For some signs, doing something is as easy as deciding it. For a Leo, all they have to do to quit smoking is really decide to quit smoking. Unfortunately, for signs that have trouble making such unequivocal decisions (I’m looking at you, dear), taking action and committing to it can be a lot trickier. That, regrettably, is exactly what’s required of you this week: a quick decision that you can and will actually stick to. I know this isn’t your forte, but you’ve got to dig deep and figure it out, fast. Choosing and committing to your choice may be difficult, but it’s nothing compared to coping with what you’ll lose if you don’t.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Show your love more. Scorpios sometimes feel things so deeply that they’re scared to show them, and keep their emotions well hidden behind a façade usually composed of cynicism or sarcasm. But this week a heartfelt display of your actual feelings–with emphasis on the positive ones, of course–would serve you well. It might feel corny to you, but it’ll go over well. I want to see an exponential increase on hugs, affection, and declarations of love, pride, and loyalty this week. Ignore (or bask in) the shock and confusion you may cause; it’s all part of the plan.
