for staying through the end of this year. “With so much transition occurring within the Council, I feel it is best at this time to ensure some level of continuity as we enter 2018,” Mateo wrote in his Dec. 27 letter. “An extension of my retirement plans would allow for my Office to provide a greater level of assistance to the Office of Council Services, and ensure one less moving piece to an already complex and ever changing environment.” Mateo, who used to run a company on Molokai renting cars and mules to tourists, was first elected to the Maui County Council in 2010, where he served (representing Molokai) until 2012. After spending most of 2013 working as an assistant to Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa, Mateo was appointed County Clerk.
MORE BAD NEWS ABOUT CORAL BLEACHING
Stickin’ around another year
THE UNRETIREMENT OF COUNTY CLERK DANNY MATEO The Maui County Mayor’s Office isn’t the only part of the Kalana O Maui Building that’s had to deal with big management changes these last few weeks. On Dec. 8, 2017, Maui County Clerk Danny Mateo sent notice to the Maui County Council that he would retire, MauiTime has learned. But 19 days later, Mateo rescinded that retirement request. “I felt at the time that retirement was the right thing to do,” Mateo told me during a Jan. 4 phone conversation. That retirement was to be effective on the last day of 2017. “I would like to thank you for all the opportunities for professional and personal development that you have provided me for the last 4 years,” Mateo wrote in his Dec. 8 letter to Maui County Council Chair Mike White. “I have enjoyed the many challenges, established a strong working relationship with my colleagues from our sister Counties, and developed lifelong friendships that will definitely be cherished. I will long remember and appreciate the support provided me during my tenure as the County Clerk. My journey throughout the years has been incredible and memorable.” In his letter, Mateo urged White to appoint current Deputy Clerk Josiah Nishita to County Clerk. But then a “whole lot of people” talked to him after his first retirement notice and asked him to reconsider, Mateo told me. Mateo said he found their arguments convincing, because on Dec. 27 he sent a new letter to White, rescinding his Dec. 8 letter. His reason for staying was simple: there’s too much uncertainty going on in the county government now. “During the past few weeks, a few unanticipated events have occurred which has led me to reconsider my previous notice of intent,” Mateo wrote to White on Dec. 27. “In the Office of Council Services, key staff departures have led to an increased reliance
upon my Office for assistance in day-to-day operations and future planning. Such assistance required takes focus away from the challenges and planning that the Office of the County Clerk will need to deal with.” Mateo’s unretirement letter also mentioned the huge responsibilities to be shouldered by the County Clerk’s office in the upcoming 2018 election. “After taking a look at the situation we’re in with such a small staff, it made sense to finish the term and complete the election,” Mateo told me. “The upcoming election is going to be intense, I believe.” Mateo’s Dec. 27 letter explained why. “As you are aware, 2018 will be an important step forward in increasing accessibility and participation from Maui County’s residents in the electoral process,” Mateo wrote to White. “Implementation of same day voter registration, new Statewide voter registration system, and shift in operational facilities will pose key challenges to my Office.” Mateo told me that 5,000 people voted early at the County Clerk’s office in the last election, and that the whole process will move to the Wailuku Community Center for the 2018 election. All of this, Mateo said, contributed to his reasoning
The environmental website Grist posted a sad, damning story on Friday, Jan. 5 about coral bleaching–one of many harbingers of the environmental disaster known as climate change. The story, which discusses a new paper published in the journal Science, concludes that coral bleaching events (caused when the ocean grows too warm, which causes coral to expel the symbiotic algae it relies on) around the world are happening so quickly these days that reefs lack sufficient time to recover, which leads to mass die-offs. “With the time transpiring between bleaching events shortened by a factor of five, there isn’t adequate time for the ecosystems to recover,” Grist reported. “Even the fastestgrowing corals that survive a major bleaching event need about 10 years to regain their health. [That] these damaging events are now occurring more quickly virtually eliminates any serious chance of large-scale recovery on a global scale. Huge portions of the world’s reefs face almost certain death–and that loss will reverberate beyond earth’s oceans.” This isn’t hyperbole. In fact, the paper–which lists Terry P. Hughes and 24 other researchers as authors and is titled “Spatial and temporal patterns of mass bleaching of corals in the Anthropocene”–is every bit as alarmist. Here’s a very brief excerpt, from the paper’s abstract: “We analyzed bleaching records at 100

globally distributed reef locations from 1980 to 2016. The median return time between pairs of severe bleaching events has diminished steadily since 1980 and is now only 6 years,” states the paper. “As global warming has progressed, tropical sea surface temperatures are warmer now during current La Niña conditions than they were during El Niño events three decades ago. Consequently, as we transition to the Anthropocene, [the post-climate change epoch we’re entering] coral bleaching is occurring more frequently in all El Niño–Southern Oscillation phases, increasing the likelihood of annual bleaching in the coming decades.” To find out how this study squares with what researchers in Hawaii know, I asked the University of Hawaii’s Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology–which has long studied coral reefs and bleaching events. “We have not had enough widespread bleaching events to make the determination of whether the frequency or intensity has increased,” said Dr. Ku‘ulei Rodgers, the Institute’s Coral Reef Ecology Lab Principal Investigator, told me in a Jan. 5 email. “The main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) did not see the first widespread bleaching event until 1996. This was followed by bleaching events in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in 2002 and 2004 that did not affect the MHIs. We did not have another major bleaching event until 2014 and 2015 which affected the entire archipelago. Statistically these few data time periods are not enough to determine whether or not the frequency has increased in Hawai‘i as they have been able to do on a global scale. Regional differences are strikingly different throughout the world.” Rodgers also referred me to a Dec. 8, 2017 study she co-wrote (along with Keisha Bahr and Paul Jokeil) that was published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science. The paper, titled “Impact of Three Bleaching Events on the Reef Resiliency of Kane‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i,” states that while bleaching events “have been increasing in frequency and severity worldwide,” there has been “extensive variation” in the three relatively recent bleaching events in Hawaii. “Bleaching prevalence was observed to decrease in certain reef areas across events, suggesting some acclimation and/or resilience, but possible increase susceptibility to mortality,” states that paper. “Long-term monitoring sites show a similar temporal pattern of coral mortality and decline in coral cover, but revealed some reefs remained relatively un-impacted by consecutive high temperature events.” Clearly, more research is needed, though Rodgers said the Science study makes it pretty clear what’s headed our way. “The Hughes et al paper that just came out gives a good indicator of what Hawai‘i will experience in the near future,” Rodgers said. “Their predictions for the frequencies of bleaching events for the Pacific will most likely hold true for the Hawaiian Islands. This is because they base their findings on a large, robust dataset.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The saga of Maui’s only Barnes & Noble–the only purveyor of new books left on the island–and its hunt for a new, permanent home continues with the company’s announcement Monday afternoon that the company will move its operation from Lahaina to Kahului in March. Here’s a statement from Jim Lampassi, Barnes & Noble’s Vice President of Real Estate Development, on the move: “Barnes & Noble is pleased to announce that we will be continuing to operate on Maui at a new temporary location in Kahului,” Lampassi said. “Our real estate team has been tirelessly working to find a new home on the island since the lease at our former location expired, and we would like to thank our broker, Roger Lyons of CBRE in Honolulu, for helping us to identify an appropriate short-term lease until we find a more permanent location. We would also like to thank Petco, the previous occupant of the space who we are licensing it from. The outpouring of support from the community was heartwarming and we can’t wait to continue to serve our loyal customers in the area. The scheduled opening date for the new store is March 12, pending permits, in Maui Marketplace, and it will feature a similar assortment of books and products.” It’s hard to imagine the bookstore would stay in the Maui Marketplace permanently. It’s largely empty now–Sports Authority long ago closed, and Petco and Lowe’s moved next door to Target. No one from Barnes & Noble’s store in
Lahaina would comment on the record on this afternoon’s corporate announcement. But one employee, who asked not to be named, did agree to comment. “I am excited about a change in location, and very excited to be moving to Kahului side, but I wish we were moving next to Target,” the employee said. “Maui Marketplace is a great center, but the Petco location I feel is not the best for Barnes & Noble. It’s kinda small and far back in the center.” Store officials announced in October that an inability to negotiate a new lease at Lahaina Gateway Center (where they’ve been for the last decade) meant that the bookstore–which has hosted innumerable community events through the years–would close for good at the end of 2017. But following a story on the thenimpending closure that we published on Oct. 21, 2017, a huge outpouring of community support led to a reversal from Barnes & Noble corporate officials. Though they were vague about the store’s immediate future, they said they would in fact keep it open.
The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation has awarded Maui AIDS Foundation with a $6,000 grant. ETAF, in partnership with Macy’s, provided the grant, which will be used for HIV education and testing services including activities involving PreExposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a oncedaily pill approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that is more than 90 percent effective in preventing HIV transmission. “The work that Maui AIDS Foundation does to help people affected by HIV/AIDS is impressive, and very much aligned with Elizabeth Taylor’s passionate commitment to the cause,” said Joel Goldman, Managing Director of ETAF. “ETAF and our partners at Macy’s are thrilled to present Maui AIDS Foundation with these funds to help further our shared mission.” Macy’s partnership with ETAF in contributing to the grant comes via its Cause Marketing Program. Through the program, Macy’s honors their responsibility to the community and their concern for the needs of their neighbors.
TOMMY BAHAMA DONATES TO MAUI FOOD BANK Tommy Bahama presented a check for $9,093.59 to the Maui Food Bank on Dec. 21. The money was raised from a special Shop for a Cause event held during the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, Nov. 20-22. During those three days, 10 percent of sales from Tommy Bahama’s Whaler’s Village and Wailea stores were earmarked for the cause.

ALARMING ANIMAL
AN ENGAGED CITIZENRY
North Fort Myers, Florida, homeowner Joanie Mathews was terrorized for hours on Nov. 14 by a large pig that wandered into her yard overnight and spent the day destroying the lawn and biting Mathews three times before trapping her in the cab of her truck. “She would circle the truck... and I would jump in the back seat and I was like ‘Go away, pig!’” Mathews told NBC-2 TV. Mathews finally called law enforcement, and it took three Lee County sheriff’s officers to wrangle the testy porker. “It was just hilarious because the pig fought them every which way,” Mathews said. No one, at press time, had stepped forward to claim the pig.
Pam Bisanti, a 31-year resident of Mount Dora, Florida, has approached the city council more than once about the speeding traffic along Clayton Street, where she lives. On Nov. 27, Bisanti made good on her threat to take matters into her own hands if the council didn’t by wielding a handmade sign reading “SLOW DOWN” as she stood next to the roadway during rush hour wearing her pajamas and robe. “The mothers up the street who send their kids down to the bus stop should have every expectation that those kids will be able to cross Clayton without being killed,” Bisanti told the Daily Commercial, saying she plans to continue her protest until the city takes action. “I am frustrated, angry and fed up. There needs to be a solution sooner than later. Remember that vision of me in my pajamas,” she added.
AWWWWW When 5-year-old TyLon Pittman of Byram, Mississippi, saw the Grinch stealing Christmas on Dec. 16 on TV, he did what any civic-minded citizen would do. He called 911. TyLon told Byram police officer Lauren Develle, who answered the call, that he did not want the Grinch to come steal his Christmas, reported the Clarion Ledger. Develle made TyLon an honorary junior officer and had him come down to the station on Dec. 18 to help her lock away the Grinch, who hung his head as TyLon asked him, “Why are you stealing Christmas?” Although the green fiend apologized, TyLon wouldn’t release him from the holding cell. Police chief Luke Thompson told TyLon to come back when he’s 21, “and I’m going to give you a job application, OK?”
WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME
UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES Stephen Allen of Tukwila, Washington, moved in with his grandmother years ago to help care for her. When she died last year, he invited his brother, a convicted drug dealer, to move in, but along with him came drug activity, squatters, stolen property and debris. Allen eventually asked police to raid the home, but when they did on Dec. 15, they evicted Allen as well, leaving him homeless. “It’s all legal, but it’s wrong,” Allen told KIRO-7 News. “I can’t do anything about it.”
THE CALL OF NATURE
In Gilgandra, New South Wales, Australia, on Nov. 29, sheep shearer Casey Barnes was tramping down wool, and her father and boyfriend were working nearby, when her long, curly hair became caught in a belt-driven motor. Horrifically, the motor ripped her scalp off from the back of her head to above her eyes and ears. Barnes was flown to Sydney, where doctors performed an emergency 20-hour surgery to save her scalp, but were ultimately unsuccessful. Barnes will have artificial skin attached to her head instead, reports The Sun. A GoFundMe page has been established to help with her medical bills.
Tracy Hollingsworth Stephens, 50, of Alachua, Florida, answered nature’s call on Nov. 25 by stopping her car in the middle of County Road 232 and stepping outside. An officer of the Florida Highway Patrol soon took notice as he had been searching for Stephens following her involvement in a two-car collision in the parking lot of a nearby T.J. Maxx store earlier that day. Stephens subsequently underperformed on a field sobriety test, according to The Independent Florida Alligator, and was arrested for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

THE SUNSHINE STATE
The Tea Terrace in London is offering a new way for customers to enjoy themselves– literally. On Dec. 16, the shop began selling the “Selfieccino,” an image of the customer’s face in the frothy topping of either a cappuccino or a hot chocolate. Patrons send an photo to the shop via an online messaging app, and the “Cino” machine takes it from there, reproducing the picture with flavorless food coloring in about four minutes. “Due to social media,” shop owner Ehab Salem Shouly told Reuters, “the dining experience has completely shifted. It’s not enough anymore to just deliver great food and great service–it’s got to be Instagram-worthy.”
Workers at Captain Hiram’s Sandbar in Sebastian, Florida, resorted to calling police on Nov. 17 when customer William Antonio Olivieri, 63, refused to leave the bar after a night of drinking. Olivieri told Sebastian police he had arrived by boat, but when a quick walk down a nearby dock failed to uncover the boat, he said perhaps he had driven himself to the bar in a black Hyundai. Throughout the interview with police, reported the Sebastian Daily, Olivieri also maintained that he was in downtown Melbourne, Florida, where he lives. Finally, he was arrested on a charge of disorderly intoxication and taken to the Indian River County Jail. ■

ast fall, Oahu’s Kimi Werner was featured in Outside magazine, a thrill for anyone. But when the spearfishing champion and waterwoman highlighted it on social media, her excitement was not as much about the article, but about its author, Susan Casey. When she learned that Casey would be writing the story, Werner posted, “I just about lost my mind!” Praising her as “a woman who had the courage to follow her dreams,” Werner described her experience with Casey as “an absolute gift.” That happens a lot to Casey, who lives on Maui. The extraordinary writer, author of the New York Times bestsellers The Wave, The Devil’s Teeth, and her most recent, Voices in the Ocean, is the only female member in an elite cadre of extreme adventure writers. compatriots–writers like Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm) or Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air)–have nothing on the petite blond, who has faced down dolphin-massacring Solomon Island tribal chiefs, been tossed around a sailboat like human chaff during a vicious storm in the great white shark-laden waters of San Francisco’s Farallon Islands and ridden behind surfing legend Laird Hamilton on a jet ski down a 40-foot wave at Jaws. “Susan has a sixth or seventh sense about story,” says Terry McDonell, the iconic magazine editor (Rolling Stone, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, among others). She’ll look at a story– and it will be obvious to all of us that there’s a story there–but there will be another story that is not completely obvious, which she also sees. This is what makes her such a good and complicated writer. She’s good at natural history,
science and phenomena, but also the humanistic science and philosophy beyond it.” McDonell, Casey’s mentor, confidante and former editor, adds, “When you read Devil’s Teeth, you may not think you’re reading about the emotional lives of great white sharks, but you are. Her dolphin book is so strong because, in addition to the storyline, she understands and translates science and philosophy so well.” Laird Hamilton, the focus of The Wave, praises her ability to report unintrusively. “She doesn’t impose herself on a situation,” he says. “Plus, she loves the ocean and there’s no doubt that it impacts her work, whether she’s writing about animals in the ocean, riders of waves or the storms. She’s connected.” At first glance, Casey seems an unlikely badass. At 5’4,” with a heart-shaped face, wide-set sapphire-blue eyes, flawless skin and
model-quality cheekbones, she presents a fragile delicacy. Judging her that way would be a grave error. Her muscular arms and shoulders are testaments to her decades as a competitive swimmer. Then there’s her piercing intelligence, sardonic wit and authentic nonchalance g at a the riskiness of many of her assignments. She wasn’t always a writer. She attended the University of Arizona on a swimming scholarU ship, sh but transitioned to majors in French and philosophy when she realized she was never ph going go to make it to the Olympics. Always drawn dra to media, she began as an art director at a series of Canadian magazines, before winning a U.S. green card in a lottery (the same lottery lotte President Donald Trump wants to abolish). After a brief stint as a creative director at a San Francisco clothing company, she moved to Santa Fe to work at Outside. A highpoint of her tenure as creative director was suggesting that a writer be sent to Mt. Everest. Ultimately, Jon Krakauer joined an expedition and turned the ensuing disaster into a best-selling book and several movies. Outside led to a dream job in New York City at Time, Inc. There, Casey, as an editor-atlarge, offered design and story input to all the company’s magazines, in addition to creating new ones. She also began to write her first book, Devil’s Teeth, a white-knuckle recounting of her Farallon Island experience with a pair of biologists studying great white sharks. Her growing stature as the writer to call for “immersion” assignments led to a series of stories that further burnished her reputation. She trained as a sharpshooter to go on a Colorado elk hunt; she waded through the Gulf Coast environmental apocalypse follow-
that!” It’s what a friend of mine calls “hot tracks:” when you experience that moment of passion and think “that resonates with me.” That’s what happened with the Farrallones. MT: Tell me about that. SC: One night there was a story on the BBC showing a lot of great white sharks circling these two guys in a little rowboat. It was just the craziest scene ever, and I had to know more about it. When I found out it was the Farrallones, I couldn’t believe it, because I’d
ethe Farallones, there was something compelling about this big wave idea. MT: You were starting your research on The Wave when Oprah Winfrey first offered you the O editorship, which you declined. SC: Everyone thought I was crazy. I figured I had committed career suicide. But the one person who believed that I should focus on the book was my dad. He said, “Are you going to take yourself seri-

lived in San Francisco for five years and had never heard of them. I knew it was a story: great white sharks in the 415 area code. That book is the rarest thing: an American story that hadn’t been told. I’ll never get another one.
ously or not?” And of all the magazine work I had done, the real satisfaction had come in the books, and I knew that, so some big magazine job didn’t matter to me.
MT: You got another “hot track” with The Wave.
MT: It was after that conversation that your father–your role model–died unexpectedly. And you came to Maui.
SC: I was really interested in tow surfing. I had seen pictures of Laird and the other guys who were doing it, and it blew my mind. So there was something, again–lik-
SC: I was done with the reporting and starting to write, and it was very solitary, but I can’t think of any other place I would have rather been. That was when
MT: You’ve said that you really learned about writing at Outside. SC: It was a great time to be at the magazine– like being in the original cast of Saturday Night Live. I was the creative director, but more important, I studied. I studied edits. I studied writers like Jon Krakauer, David Quammen, Tim Cahill. I remember the day that Jon’s Into Thin Air big thick manuscript came in–I took off the lid and thought, “Oh my God, this is like somebody’s soul in a box. I want to do
MT: But the O offer came back and this time you took it and returned to NYC. SC: Yeah. I was happy to be offered a second chance at that job, although the first six months were really hard. I would work at the magazine all day and then come home and work on The Wave until, like, three in the morning.
SC: Yeah. I would walk into that gorgeous Hearst building, where my office looked out on Central Park, and feel like my soul was being pulled out through my nostrils. Having a glamorous life in Manhattan was an interesting sociological experiment, but not what makes me happy. What makes me happy is to be next to the ocean in my bare feet. I like not having to wear high-heeled shoes. I like not having to brush my hair. MT: So when you decided to write Voices, you returned full-time to Maui. SC: When I sold the proposal, I knew I would have to quit my job. I felt I’d accomplished what I set out to do at O. Plus, I was writing about the ocean, so it helped to be able to see the ocean and swim whenever I wanted. For me, the Pacific is the alpha ocean, and I like being in the middle of it. I really love being so far away from land. I think land is highly overrated. MT: In all your story travels, what frightened you the most? SC: The Solomon Islands. That was a scary trip. I was told, “Don’t come.” It’s a very rough place. I was in the main city, where the dolphin traffickers are connected to the government. It’s a lucrative industry, I was there to write about it, and they didn’t want it dragged into the daylight. I was alone and I was pretty nervous. But, you know, I returned in one piece.
MAUITIME: Voices in the Ocean for young readers? That’s a first for you. SUSAN CASEY: I never thought about kids not reading my books. But after talking to my editor about Voices, I imagined reading it aloud to my niece and nephew and realized she was right. Maybe John Lilly [the controversial researcher who gave drugs to dolphins] and the Solomon Islands [a grim chapter on dolphin massacres] aren’t exactly what you want your kid reading about. So those chapters are gone.
Maui really started to feel like home. I met wonderful people and felt supported. Plus Jaws–Peahi–really seemed like a magical place, like the Farallones.
MT: You had great success. The book was a smash, the magazine thrived, you won awards. Kind of hard to picture you as a high-heeled, limoriding New Yorker, though.

ing the oil spill. She even wrote in Esquire about a stint as a mermaid in a New York bar’s giant fish tank. In 2009, Casey’s New York-based career apexed when she was named editor-in-chief of O, The Oprah Magazine, then the most profitable title in the Hearst publishing empire. During her tenure, the magazine won numerous high-profile awards. Says McDonell, “She’s the only person ever to win a National Magazine Award in three categories: As a writer for Esquire, as editorin-chief of O and as a creative director at Outside. No one has come anywhere close to that. It’s astonishing.” In 2010, her second book, The Wave, became a hit as giant as the 100-ft waves she so brilliantly explored, although writing it at the same time she was overseeing O was brutal. In 2013, she moved to Maui to write Voices in the Ocean, a look at humans’ kinship with dolphins from the beginning of recorded history through its more problematic present. It was published in 2015 to wide acclaim, and this month a new version–directed specifically at young readers–will be released. I didn’t know Casey when I first read–no, inhaled–The Wave. As soon as I turned the last page, I ordered Devil’s Teeth. Her writing was dazzling, intimate and just so freaking smart. I agreed with one fan’s description in an Amazon review: “Casey is fluent in ‘gnarly’ and proficient in ‘wonk,’ and she writes lucidly so the rest of us can come along for the ride.” When my husband and I moved to Kuau, I was delighted to discover that she lived in a beautifully restored plantation-style cottage across the street. Since then, we have become great friends with her, her partner–the photographer Rennio Maifredi–and their two magnificent Maine Coon cats. To be Susan’s friend and neighbor is to enjoy a constant exchange of books, news, ideas and lively conversation. And I will reveal this: beneath her take-no-prisoners bad-assery beats a warm heart. When I rescued a three-week old kitten from the middle of Hali‘imaile road last spring, she was there with sage advice and a steady stream of kitty presents so perfect that, eight months later, they are still his favorites. When MauiTime suggested that I sit down with her, it was a quick and easy “Yes.” Here are excerpts from our conversation.
MT: What about riding down a Jaws wave on the back of Laird’s jet ski? SC: That’s a different kind of scary. That’s a good scary. MT: Are you working on a new book now?
Riding a Jaws wave on the back of Laird Hamilton’s jet ski: “In a spasm of violence, the wave jacked up. It pressed us forward as we dropped down a wall so steep that I felt sure I would get pitched over Hamilton’s head… [he] glanced up at the lip that now towered above us, calculating exactly how many seconds we had before Jaws swallowed. The G-forces made it hard to turn my head, but at the edges of my vision I saw spray and froth and the blood beat hard in my ears as the wave bellowed only yards behind us… Hamilton shot forward in a burst of power and we outraced the falling lip, rocketing into the impact zone, heading directly for the inshore rock field.” From The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean
SC: I don’t want to talk too much about it, but will say this: one of the big underlying themes of all of my books is our relationship to nature, which is so disconnected. We can’t destroy the natural world and think somehow we’re going to thrive. The next book is around this theme. MT: What’s your dream adventure? SC: I want to go down in a submersible. I don’t care where, just as deep as possible. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

newly done deck now features operable blinds that can be opened and closed, depending on the heat. Lahaina can get incredibly hot and the shutter system allows the restaurant to control their guests’ comfort while still providing the outdoor, oceanfront atmosphere that Aloha Mixed Plate is famous for. The restaurant’s slogan was, “Paper Plate meets Million Dollar View,” and though it has exchanged the old paper plates to a more sustainable system, the “plate lunch” philosophy still guides the establishment. “The mixed plate comes from the plantation days,” said Boskoff. During the sugar plantation days in Hawaii,
Aloha Mixed Plate is part of the restaurant company, Na Hoaloha ‘Ekolu, which includes brands like Star Noodle, Leoda’s and the Old Lahaina Luau. The Luau is famous for its use of the traditional Hawaiian imu for their kalua pork. In fact, the short rib dinner at Aloha Mixed Plate is cooked in the Old Lahaina Luau imu and brought over. 'People Need Live Music' FOLK SINGER JUDY COLLINS WILL PLAY THE MACC
L
egendary folk singer and songwriter, Judy Collins will be performing at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Friday, Jan. 12. Collins’ career spans more than 50 years and includes 28 studio albums, 14 singles, a variety of holiday albums and multiple live and compilation works. Collins also started her own record label about 20 years ago
Steven, and the two have stayed friends since. Collins says the secret to their friendship is “that we are married to different people.” In 2015, she also released a billboard compilation album, Strangers Again, featuring some of her favorite male artists, including Jackson Browne, Jeff Bridges, Michael McDonald and Willie Nelson. It’s safe to say Collins has barely slowed down since her first release in 1961. “I’m still trying to write good songs and find good songs,” said Collins, who views herself foremost as a songwriter, then a performer. “I keep on writing
[Donald] Trump in the White House, and my job is to encourage people to resist,” Collins said. “I think that is the message for the times, to resist. Do the things you might have forgotten. Voting, get active in your local neighborhood, find a family to support.” Over the years, Collins has appeared on PBS television specials and has written 10 books, most of which are memoirs, and one mystery thriller titled Shameless. She lost a son to suicide and wrote a book called Sanity and Grace, the kind of book she describes as one “you don’t want to read until you need
and making that my primary musical exploration, and, of course, singing and performing, which is a whole ‘nother art form.” Collins’ lyrics have long been associated with revolution and change. Considered a folk pioneer, her activism has never stopped. She was once commissioned by NASA to write the song “Beyond the Stars,” about the first female astronaut to captain a space shuttle orbiter. On today’s political climate, she said that we recently “have turned a bit of a corner” with the influx of women running for elected office. “I’m disgusted by our situation with
to.” In her books she focuses on addiction, including many of her own struggles with alcoholism and mental health issues. In fact, Collins dedicates roughly 10 of the 150 shows she performs each year to mental health awareness, donating proceeds and helping to start discussions. “I try to be supportive of a good cause, I try to make a difference,” she said. “I think my work is a service, and people need live music in their lives.” ■
and has since been working and recording with lots of young artists, which she calls a “new adventure in her life.” Her latest release, Everybody Knows , is a collaboration album with her and former lover Stephen Stills, of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The two were engaged in a short-lived romance in the late 1960s. The famous Still’s song, “Suite Judy Blue Eyes,” was written for her by

Real News Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Post’ is passionate but self-satisfied ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 115 Min.
I
n 1971, The Washington Post and The New York Times published revealing, damaging and highly classified documents involving the Vietnam War. These documents, called “the Pentagon Papers” and leaked by US military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, unveiled shocking revelations regarding the conduct of the Vietnam War. In this Steven Spielbergdirected dramatization, Tom Hanks plays Ben Bradlee, the executive editor of The Washington Post and Meryl Streep plays Kay Graham, the owner of the paper who was faced with the controversial, potentially illegal decision to publish the government documents. The Post is one of the stronger films Steven Spielberg has directed in years. His stately, downright stodgy choices of material and determinedly old school approach to filmmaking is still intact but the subject matter has clearly lit a fire in his belly and that makes a world of difference. While the look and feel of the early 1970s are created with eerie precision, it’s the modern day parallels that will have everyone talking. The Post is obviously meant as an anti-“Fake News” commentary, a tribute to real journalism and a testament to reporters who challenge powerful political figures. When characters declare that their articles provide a contrast to a politician’s formulated public image and how controversial news items need to be reported no matter what, the film is blatantly tipping its hat to present day events.
Sure, Nixon's nuts, but at least he's not on Twitter all day
This is the first time Spielberg has ever depicted the Vietnam War and his being late to the topic shows. The establishing scenes of battle during the war are bloodless and surprisingly unimpressive. Likewise, the brief glimpses of war protestors (the “1-2-3-4, we don’t want this f@#$%^& war” chant has been sanitized to obtain a PG-13 rating) and a rushed footnote on Watergate. Oliver Stone covered this material far better decades ago. I don’t mean to pick on Spielberg–if there’s one filmmaker who inspired my love of movies at a young age and fueled my imagination more than anyone else, it’s him. A list of the dozens of great, classic American movies he’s made would seem redundant at this point, so here’s a different list: his films The Terminal, The Adventures of Tin Tin, War
FOLLOW US!
Horse, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies and The BFG are all respectable and masterful in their production values, but none are that interesting or especially good. It fills me with dread to think that a young moviegoer would hear Spielberg’s name and think of his claustrophobic, museum-ready chat-a-thon Lincoln. At times, the star power is almost too much. Hanks and Streep have never worked together before and have an easy chemistry that’s fun to watch. They’re better in their individual moments, when we’re not focusing on how two of the biggest movie stars on the planet are sharing a scene. Bob Odenkirk, playing Washington Post reporter Ben Bagdikian, has the best scene: when Ben meets his essential lead, he’s living fearfully in a motel,
with the Pentagon Papers spread out across the room. Near the end, The Post begins to feel less like a historical recreation and very much like a glossy Hollywood movie. When the Frank Capra finish comes and Hanks and Streep are seen standing next to one another, arms crossed, it feels far too smug and self-satisfied. The troubling 2005 Munich remains Spielberg’s last great film but this is an interesting footnote in his historic film career. While The Post is clearly Spielberg’s All The President’s Men, he’s too antsy and flamboyant a filmmaker to completely mimic Alan J. Pakula’s directing style. The Post is imperfect and none-too-subtle but still a thing to marvel: of all things, here’s a passionate, politically charged work from Steven Spielberg. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
You’ve heard all about how weaknesses can be strengths, and vice versa, but you haven’t quite mastered putting the idea into practice. This week, let’s change all that. By trying to hide or protect that vulnerable spot of yours, you’re perpetuating it as a weakness, and setting yourself up for failure, embarrassment, and unhappiness. Here’s another option: Wear the thing on your sleeve. Own it. Make it something that no one can hurt you with. Once your Achilles’ heel is out in the open, you’ll finally see how much energy you were expending trying to keep it secret, and what a relief it is, now that it’s not.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Here’s a gross metaphor: You’re carrying around lots of shit unnecessarily. I mean that literally and figuratively. Get a high colonic and you’ll be amazed at what comes out of you. Then know that you’re holding onto just as much emotional crap that you’d be better off rid of. Shedding those unwanted spiritual burdens isn’t as easy as spending a few hours on the toilet, however. I think you have a clue as to what will help you get started on flushing out those grudges, injuries, scars, jealousies, and so on. This week, why don’t you give it a try?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
It’s like when you lose a tooth and your tongue can’t stop probing the place where it used to be. It makes you cringe every time, yet you just can’t stop poking that tender spot. Maybe you’re a masochist. Maybe you’re just curious how much self-torture you’ll allow yourself. Whatever the reason, don’t let it make you too nuts, because you’re not going to be able to stop yourself for a while. This temporary habit will go away, however. You just have to wait for a new tooth to grow in, or the pain to fade, or just for something else to distract you. So go ahead and poke at the sore spot this week, and don’t kick yourself in the ass for doing it. By this time next month (perhaps sooner), you’ll have already forgotten all about it. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
I didn’t fulfill all 38 of last year’s New Year’s resolutions, but I can say that I took a fair stab at most of them, and accomplished more than half of them. I secretly knew that would happen, so I’m not too hard on myself that I let 40 percent of my intentions fall through the cracks. I honestly gave that list a good crack and truly tried to do them all. I didn’t give up on half of them right from the start–which is just what you’re contemplating doing with some of your newest intentions. You may fail with some of the things you want to do. But you’ve got to act like you’ll succeed at all of them–otherwise you won’t succeed at any of them. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
I think you could be happier if your outsides better matched your insides. I’ll agree with you that people shouldn’t judge you on your appearance. But sometimes it’s all they have, initially, upon which to form an opinion. Based on those criteria, their first impressions of you generally aren’t all that impressive. Work on that this week. It’s not superficiality. Think about it like this: if you were in charge of selling a product you really believed in, what would you do? You’d advertise. You really believe in yourself, don’t you? Work on your advertisement. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Now that the mess from New Year’s is finally totally cleaned up, you have nothing to remind you of the holidays and nothing like them to look forward to for months. (If you count Valentine’s Day as a real holiday, I feel sorry for you.) However, what would you say if I told you it was possible to make the next 30 days more special than any of the Chrismukkah madness was? This month your potential to connect with the people you love is powerful. All it requires is a bit of effort on your part. Here’s my question: now that you know you can make January 2018 amazing for everyone you love, why the hell wouldn’t you?
Recreate yourself. Powerful Leos are good at that. You have the ability to reinvent yourself from the ground up and present a “new you” to the people in your life. Lots of people can do that–but only a few have the kind of charismatic charm it takes to pull it off. You’re one of them. Maybe you don’t need an overhaul. However, there are definitely things you can and should change. Renovate, remodel, or recreate yourself this week, because next week’s a great time to introduce everyone to the “new you.” VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
For someone who’s known as being insanely practical, you’re also frequently intensely irrational. I guess sagacity doesn’t necessarily accompany pragmatism. I’ve watched Virgos take very analytical, apparently levelheaded approaches to ventures that are at their cores sheer lunacy. This, my dear friend, is one. You’re acting just a bit crazy, and this nutso idea you’re hanging onto so tightly, which would be harmless in anyone else’s hands, is quite dangerous in your all-too-capable ones. It’s more or less a loaded gun, filled with real bullets. Drop it, now, and walk away slowly. Don’t look back.

I’m not a huge fan of extreme solutions. I think very few problems are actually black and white enough to justify such unilateral measures. For example, although for many it’s obviously the way to go, I’d argue that some “alcoholics” don’t need to “solve” their problem by calling themselves recovering alcoholics for the rest of their lives and never touching another drop of the stuff. Your problems are also not so cut-and-dry. They’re complex, and thus require complex solutions. I know, that’s a lot more work. But it’s also the only right answer, unlike the too-pat, oversimplified one you’re thinking of settling for. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
If I had a ton of money, one of the things I’d do is start a school, one that fostered every form of intelligence there is, and didn’t just focus on language and math. It would be designed from the ground up to expose children to myriad possibilities, and when someone expressed an interest in something, it would help her run with it and take that interest as far as possible. Instead of saying, “This is what you should learn,” the school would ask: “What would you love to learn?” Until that day, however, a good education will have to happen on a more grassroots level–starting with you Scorps. You’re in a position to help a child (of any age) learn something and run far with it. Please, won’t you do so?

Very lucky (or heretofore unsuccessful) people tend to regard the path to success as a straight line stretching directly from their starting point to triumphant victory. Most successful people know that in truth the path is full of zigs and zags, unpredictable u-turns, and veritable shit-tons of failure. Letting yourself be deterred or unduly disappointed with the inevitable knocks you take on the path is what will keep you just where you are, or worse. Recognize that failing is all part of the process, pick yourself up, and move on to your next, bigger, better failure!
Instead of trigonometry, they ought to teach us life management skills in school. I’m not talking the crappy Home Ec course you probably had to take. I mean it would be great to have someone teach you how to juggle a relationship with a career, or how to actively pursue your real dreams while doing what you have to do to make ends meet, or how to truly enjoy your life without a lot of money. You’re already an expert at a few of these things. Won’t you join our Scorpio friends and help teach the rest of us how to make the world a better place?
