pair the US nuking Russia in some way). “But all of this is pretty speculative–we can only guess about what they might want to do, and then from there figure out what the capabilities might be,” he continued. “But the MHPCC is pretty small and isolated–I don’t suspect it’d be a high-value target unless it really sits at the center of some kind of important communication node.” And once again, Schwartz agreed. “For a country like Russia or China with substantially more nuclear weapons (and, probably, more specific objectives), such a facility might wind up on a target list, though there’s no way those of us on the outside would ever really know,” Schwartz said. “During the Cold War, both the United States and the Soviet Union had such enormous amounts of nuclear weapons that it was a real struggle, at least in the United States, to find realistic targets for them all. In that instance, the Maui facility would have likely wound up on the list. Today, with much smaller arsenals? Probably not, but who knows? It certainly doesn’t appear to be the kind of place that, if destroyed, would have an immediate and measurable impact on the outcome of a war.” Oh, and if you really want to ruin your day, check out Wellerstein’s NUKEMAP website (Nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap). WHY IS GLENN MUKAI STILL IN POWER? A little over six months ago we called for the Maui County Liquor Commission to impeach LC Director Glenn Mukai, call for his resignation or just generally find a way to shove him out the door. Seriously, he’s a tinplated wannabe dictator who runs his department like a private fiefdom, sowing chaos not just throughout the county, but within the LC itself. At a time when millions of women are marching throughout the U.S. to call for greater democratic protections, Mukai sits in his office like some anachronistic overseer hellbent on, among other disgraces, making it impossible for nonprofits to serve alcohol at fundraisers. The Department of Liquor Control is so out of control that on Friday, Jan. 19, the Liquor Commission held an unprecedented special meeting to deal with a Violence in the Workplace complaint. According to the Jan. 20 Maui News, Bill Pacheco–the LC’s Chief of Enforcement–filed the complaint against Mukai himself. “It hasn’t been enjoyable for our workplace,” Pacheco, who is one of the LC’s highest ranking officials, told The Maui News. “When I deal with my employees, I make sure I treat them

It’s been a little more than a week since the state Emergency Management Agency zapped most Hawaii residents with a false ballistic missile alert. While it took about a day for everything to return to our normal state of bliss, I’ve lately become fixated on the large corporate-like boxes at the top of Lipoa Parkway in Kihei. It all started a few days after the alert, when some friends of mine started talking about how the prevailing wisdom that in Hawaii, all the big nuclear warhead targets are on Oahu (the Naval Station at Pearl Harbor, Hickam Field, Schofield Barracks/Wheeler Field, the Marine base at Kaneohe, etc.), was wrong. In a strike, they said, Kihei would definitely get hit. Their reason? The Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), located at 550 Lipoa Parkway in Kihei. Built in 1993, the complex–known in the acronym jargon as a DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC)–is an Air Force research lab packed with supercomputers. “The MHPCC DSRC operates as one of the six DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers in the DoD’s High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP),” states the Maui Center’s webpage. “The MHPCC DSRC allocates more than 70,000,000 computational hours annually to the HPCMP Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation community.” As for what the MHPCC actually does, well, the Department of Defense isn’t exactly specific (though it’s very clear that the computers it operates are extremely powerful). “The MHPCC DSRC provides computational resources for the Department of Defense’s scientific computational needs through their support of DoD ‘Challenge Projects’ and other government users,” states the MHPCC website. “The Center also supports the Directed Energy Director-
ate’s Maui Space Surveillance System. Located atop 10,000-foot Mt. Haleakala, the Space Surveillance System is used for imaging and tracking of space objects.” But just because the DoD operates some large computers in Kihei, does that rise to the level of an actual target for someone’s nuclear weapons? I asked two respected experts on nuclear weapons history and policy to speculate on the question, and while they mostly agreed with each, their answers were a mix of good news and, well… “For North Korea, I would really doubt it,” said Alex Wellerstein, a professor of Science and Technology Studies at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey (and developer of the really sophisticated and scary NUKEMAP computer application), in a Jan. 19 email. “They don’t have many missiles, they don’t probably have great accuracy. ‘Wasting’ a nuke on a single military facility seems, well, wasteful.” Stephen I. Schwartz, the former Editor of the Nonproliferation Review and author of numerous books on nuclear weapons policy, agreed. “For a country like North Korea, with a small nuclear arsenal and (thus far) very limited means to deliver weapons to targets, I’d say no,” said Schwartz in a Jan. 20 email. “Besides, Kim Jong Un has already been photographed with maps showing potential US nuclear targets, and this isn’t on the map (although Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is).” Well, that’s reassuring. But what if a small, socalled “limited” nuclear exchange with North Korea touched off a much wider, global nuclear war involving Russia and maybe even China? “I don’t think we really know,” Wellerstein said. “If Russia thought that the HPCC had something to do with US command and control systems–sure, they’d target it, they have plenty of missiles and lots of accuracy. If it’s just for scientific research, even classified work, they might skip it to target other things that would be more important (e.g., things that would im-

with respect that they’ve earned as colleagues and that’s what I think is missing from all this.” Seriously, Pacheco is being way too generous here. The level of dysfunction at the LC is staggering. In fact, just a few days before the commission’s special meeting, The Maui News reported that the commission had finally completed its first charter-mandated annual evaluation of Mukai (even though he’s been director for more than a year) and found nothing wrong with Mukai. “The commission believes that Director Mukai continues to lead the Department of Liquor Control in a satisfactory manner,” Liquor Commission Chairman Robert Tanaka said in a letter to Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. Clearly, Mukai still needs to go, but it’s also clear the entire Liquor Commission needs to bail as well. Their actions are an insult to everyone in the county who believes in honesty and accountability. ■

News Of The Weird WEIRD CHEMISTRY In Lawrence County, Tennessee, law enforcement officials are confronting the fallout from a new drug known as “Wasp” (crystallized wasp repellant mixed with methamphetamine). To wit: On Dec. 18, as the Johnson family baked Christmas cookies in their Lawrenceburg kitchen, Danny Hollis, 35, walked into their home and asked for help. NewsChannel 5 in Nashville reported Hollis poured himself a glass of water from the sink before grabbing a knife and cutting across his throat. Teenage son Canaan Johnson said Hollis then ran up to the second floor, heaved an oak dresser down the stairs, and jumped out a window onto a gazebo below, seriously injuring his neck. The Johnsons, meanwhile, had retreated to their car, where they called 911. Hollis chased the car down the street, but got hung up on a barbed wire fence, then stripped naked to free himself and climbed a nearby tree, where officers found him, according to police reports. Hollis fought them off by allegedly throwing his own feces at them, as they tased him out of the tree. Hollis was booked into the county jail on numerous charges.
to take a stand. He got out of his car and stood in front of the camera, blocking it, until police arrested him. Middleton further antagonized the officer by calling him a “pig” and giving his name as Elvis Presley. “They acted like what I did was the crime of the century,” Middleton told Metro News. “I know I shouldn’t have done it. People have just been laughing about it... well, apart from my wife.” Middleton was fined about $54 plus court costs for his antics.
AWESOME! Bertha Vickers of Morgantown, Mississippi, turned 100 on Jan. 9. To celebrate, she bagged a deer. “I was sort of shaking until I got ready to shoot,” Vickers told the Clarion Ledger. “I didn’t think it was all going to go right.” Vick-
ers still lives in her home and mows her own lawn, tends a garden and hunts for squirrels. “I don’t know why everybody is making such a big deal about it,” she said. “It was just a doe. I would love to kill a buck.”
EXTREME CLIMATE NEWS It may be cold where you are, but it’s hot in Broadford, a small town about an hour from Melbourne, Australia, where on Jan. 5, the highway began melting. Temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit and higher reactivated an ingredient in the road surface, turning it into a sticky mess on the Hume Freeway, 9News reported. Motorists were warned by Victoria police to avoid the right lane and expect delays over a 10km stretch. Officials
also put in place a fire ban and urged people to stay indoors until the heat abated.
SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM Christians in a Portuguese village carry on a curious tradition during Epiphany: They encourage their young children to smoke cigarettes. Vale de Salgueiro locals told Fox News that nobody is sure what the smoking symbolizes, but the centuries-old tradition persists. And Portuguese authorities don’t intervene, despite the fact that the legal age to purchase tobacco in Portugal is 18. Writer Jose Ribeirinha researched the tradition and said that since Roman times, villagers in the region have done things that were out of the norm during winter solstice celebrations. ■
OOOH, WISE GUY, EH? Khaled A. Shabani, 46, a hairstylist in Madison, Wisconsin, was arrested on a tentative charge of mayhem and disorderly conduct while armed after an altercation with a customer on Dec. 22. Shabani scolded the 22-year-old customer for fidgeting, then taught him a lesson by using the “shortest possible attachment” to “run down the middle of the customer’s head,” reported the Wisconsin State Journal, and “leaving him looking a bit like Larry from The Three Stooges,” police spokesman Joel DeSpain said. Shabani also clipped the customer’s ear with scissors. “While it is not a crime to give someone a bad haircut,” DeSpain noted, “you will get arrested for intentionally snipping their ear with a scissors.” Shabani said the snip was an accident, and his charge was later reduced to a ticket for disorderly conduct.
BRIGHT IDEAS Polk County (Florida) Sheriff’s officers responded to an unusual 911 call on New Year’s Eve: Michael Lester, 39, of Winter Haven, started off by telling the dispatcher, “Umm, I’m drunk. I don’t know where I’m at. I’m just drunk driving.” The dispatcher urged Lester to pull over and park, but he explained that he was driving on the wrong side of the road near a Publix and wondered where the police were. WTVT reported that officers finally caught up with Lester, who helpfully explained he’d had several beers, hadn’t slept much and had taken methamphetamine earlier in the day; he was jailed on a DUI charge. Officers later posted on their Facebook page that “in this particular incident, nobody was hurt, so we couldn’t help but LOTO [that means we Laughed Our Tasers Off].”

n the evenings I like to take the family dog for a walk. walk We live in Haiku in an area that would be perfect for dog walking, except I can only walk her on a short part of the road (back and forth) because of stray and vicious dogs that live on the rest of the road. Even the ones that are tethered run at us snarling and barking, making it very difficult to enjoy the walk and control my own dog who can’t help but react. These dogs live in terrible conditions, never leaving the yard. If you can’t be a responsible pet owner, then why do you have a dog? ■

LET’S DO SHOTS!
What it’s like to get Botox (and a few other injections) at RevitalizeMaui By Alex Mitchell
T
hough I have my vices like anyone else, I always have one foot firmly planted in personal health and wellness. Whether that’s by (sparsely) attending yoga classes, going to the gym, doing annual thisyln cleanses or drinking the newest and best protein shakes, I’m always trying to better my well-being. Reaching my goals and preserving my youth is important to me, so I often seek out more information about health, fitness and anti-aging fads. I first became aware of RevitalizeMaui about a year ago. Since I spend the majority of my life closely monitoring some electronic device that’s connected to the internet, I started noticing RevitalizeMaui’s ads and services posts flowing through my social media feeds. It only opened a year or so ago, so its campaign is actually quite impressive. The first thing I thought was, “Wow, we can get vitamin B injections on Maui now.” As someone who’s keen to the professional party lifestyle, I thought this was pretty awesome and a great forward-thinking business for the Valley Isle. On the mainland, it’s pretty common to see vitamin IV trucks pull up outside of casinos in Vegas

or outside hot brunch spots in major cities. But for Maui, this is a new type of service. I began following RevitalizeMaui’s posts and noticed that it offers a wide variety of services for residents looking for optimum health and wellness. It even has vitamin injection “happy hours,” which is a pretty clever way of building awareness. In addition to vitamin shots and supplements, it also offers services for weight loss and anti-aging. I made an appointment at RevitalizeMaui with the intention of meeting the doctor and exploring their offerings further. I’ve always been curious about Botox and I definitely wanted to try a vitamin B shot. As expected, my visit to RevitalizeMaui was more than just a fun trip to the doctor’s office. I actually learned a lot. The “Commander in Chief” at RevitalizeMaui is Dr. Emeka B. Okwuje (pronounced oh-koo-jay). He graduated from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in 1997, and after three years of post-graduate surgical training he completed a four-year residency in anesthesia. He specialized in pain procedure and regional nerve blocks, and did clinical research in the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery focusing on wound healing and
skin regeneration. About a decade ago, Okwuje says he became “obsessed” with the field of antiaging and longevity medicine, and his medical profession began to transform into much more. In addition to his medical accolades, he’s also received fellowship training in anti-aging and aesthetic non-surgical techniques from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS). This includes Botox, which we should probably discuss for a bit. The name is a shortened version of Botulinum Toxin– which can be lethal. But when Botox cosmetics are administered by an experienced professional in a safe, clean and legal environment, it can be a gift. In fact, I have many friends who get Botox injections on a regular basis. They’re friends of all ages and backgrounds, but most don’t feel completely comfortable talking about it because of the scrutiny that they’ll inevitably receive from their circle of friends. Naturally, your friends and loved ones would prefer not to see your face “Hollywood” frozen, and physical safety is a huge concern. When used by a doctor to slow the signs of aging, Botox is injected into the muscle to decrease the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. It decreases fine lines and wrinkles by
numbing the muscle. Basically, Botox works by not allowing your existing lines and wrinkles to get deeper during the period of time it works (which is four to six months). I have to admit that when I arrived at my appointment, I was nervous because I’d never had anything injected in my face before. But within seconds after walking through RevitalizeMaui’s doors, my nervousness transitioned into total comfort and even excitement. It helped that Dr. Okwuje was friendly and professional. While receiving my services, I was able to ask all the questions I had while holding a mirror up to my face and watching Dr. Okwuje administer Botox into my facial muscles. The process was virtually painless, but there was an odd, unexpected moment where my forehead looked like it was from a baby Klingon on Star Trek. This was due to the saline solution mixing with the Botox, and then settling into my forehead. The whole thing felt a little bit like a science project, but I was still thrilled to see the results. And it does work. It takes a few days to settle in, but when it does, voila! In fact, it’s been a few weeks now since I got Botox, and everyone around me just seems to think I look really “refreshed” and well slept. It’s awesome. I’ve been told that the three things in life that keep you young are sex, laughing and

they all are seeking an enhanced life experience. They all want to feel and look their best. The thing about longevity, wellness optimization and aesthetic medicine–prevention is always more powerful than cure.” Here’s a list of Revitalize Maui’s services, and it’s also currently running a promotion from Jan. 29-Feb. 28. It’s offering 10 percent off dermal fillers, $13/per unit for Botox, $50 off Botox treatments (40u minimum) and a free “BeLifted” IM shot with any aesthetic treatment (for new patients only).

Retinae. Well, now we can add Botox to that list. Would I do it again? Yes, definitely. At the end of my appointment, it was time for me to get my vitamin B injection (a blend of vitamin B12 and B Complex). Dr. Okwuje simply slipped the thin needle into my hip, and that was it. The interesting thing was that within a couple of minutes I could actually taste the B12 in my mouth, and only five minutes after I left the office, I felt an earth-shattering burst of energy. I called some friends from my car and was probably talking a mile per minute as I told them that I was super-excited to do whatever was next on my plate that day. I had no issues sleeping that night (as I sometimes do). I would totally do that again, too. Besides the two services that I received at RevitalizeMaui that day, Dr. Okwuje sees a variety of patients with different needs and goals in optimum health. I asked him how he stays abreast of the newest trends and discoveries in his field. He said he’s continually educating himself, attending conferences and gaining CMEs (Continuing Medical Education credits) in aesthetics, anti-aging and metabolic/functional medicine. “All the conferences I attend now are focused in this area,” he said. “I am very committed to lifelong learning in order to stay abreast of all the newest advances and techniques. Choosing conferences and courses that are relevant to my interests and medical advances and treatments–it’s something I’m passionate about, and it’s the best way to keep the learning fun and high yield.” Dr. Okwuje told me that common concerns/ailments that he sees with a majority of his patients are complaints of low energy, weight gain and a desire to decrease the signs of physical aging. For patients like this, Dr. Okwuje will customize a plan. For these, he often recommends that a patient’s plan include a series of detox and energy-boosting vitamin IV treatments, injectable neuromodulators, dermal fillers and hormone replacement (male & female) protocols that improve energy, vitality and youth. “Loose, saggy, dehydrated skin, hair loss, low energy or libido and even weight gain and muscle wasting are a common sequel to abnormal hormone levels,” he said. He added that beyond hormone imbalance, the most common vitamin deficiencies that he sees are vitamin D and B12. “I have to say that one of the most gratifying aspects of our practice is the rapid improvement a treatment with IV Vitamins can bring,” said Dr. Okwuje. “Whether it’s a hangover, jetlag or just simply feeling depleted, IV Nutrition is definitely a soughtafter and highly effective service. Yes, there’s a wide gamut in the clinical practice of IV Vitamin Therapy. While we do get a bunch of people who need more energy, a hangover or jetlag cure–we have a great number who have autoimmune issues, nutritional depletion or specific metabolic challenges that our customized IV Vitamin therapy protocols that I’ve been trained in and have further developed really helps them with.” Dr. Okwuje believes his practice not only fits into the Maui community, but reflects it. “Our local community boasts such a great diversity, and our practice mirrors that,” he said. “We have a great mix of patients. In general, the commonality is that
SERVICES IV Nutrient Therapy (Vitamins & Hydration) IV Nutrient Therapy is one of the most popular advances in the world of anti-aging medicine, and extremely common for those that are looking to optimize their health, performance and overall quality of life. IV therapy bypasses the gut, allowing for optimum absorption and immediate availability. Common reasons for
IV nutrient therapy include easing a hangover, jetlag and aiding against the common cold or “feeling under the weather.” IV Nutrient for Hangover, IV Nutrient for Jetlag and High Dose Vitamin C Therapy are three of the most popular IV therapies at RevitalizeMaui. Botox Cosmetics Botox targets the underlying causes of wrinkles and fine lines; cellular changes die to aging, natural loss of collagen and damage from environmental freeradicals and sun damage. By temporarily reducing muscle activity via a protein, Botox smooths wrinkles and fine lines from beneath the skin’s surface. The effects of Botox last anywhere from four to six months. The most common places to receive Botox are on forehead lines, frown lines (#11’s) and crows feet. Botox has more medical benefits including migraine and tension headache therapy, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and muscle spasms/tonicity. Dermal Fillers A few of the most popular dermal fillers on the market are Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero. Each designed for different uses, dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acids (HA). HA’s already exist in the human body, so sensitivities and cross reactions are negligible. Benefits to dermal fillers include cheek volumization, lip augmentation, reduction of nasolabial folds (smile and laugh lines), marionette lines and reflating the tear tough (baggy area under eyes). Hormone Replacement for Women & Men Hormone Replacement for Women and Men is a customized service that assesses current state of health in various ways. The service begins with a consultation, then advanced diagnostic testing, administration of a Biogenetical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) program or Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), vitamins and micronutrients, follow up visits and tracking. Benefits are huge and based on an individual’s need, medical history and gender. By balancing hormones, individuals will experience a more optimized way of life: more stamina, improved lean body mass, reduced body fat, increased libido, better sleep, stabilized moods and more. Weight Loss The center offers a variety of a la carte services, programs and packages for weight loss. It has guided 12-week programs, offer natural weight loss aids and lipotropic injections (vitamins and minerals) to stimulate metabolism and jumpstart a weight loss plan. B12 & Vitamin Injections This service is the process of administering intramuscular (IM) vitamin injections into the muscle. Once injected, the nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream and enable a higher absorption rate than vitamins you make take orally. These custom nutrient formulas are based on top nutrient injection therapy protocols. BeEnergized (B12), PowerUp (B&B12) and BeLifted (CoQ10) are three of the most popular vitamin injections at RevitalizeMaui. RevitalizeMaui is open Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. 300 Ohukai Rd. THE SACRED GARDEN

It’s a place of peace in Makawao
Finding Buddha

at the Sacred Garden are full moon walks in the outdoor labyrinth, which Hogan has been doing for 22 years. The upcoming blue moon is an especially rare occasion. Those participating will gather at 7pm in front of the giant Buddha in the garden, where they’ll be serenaded by harpist Irene Ryding. Then the group will go out under torch and moonlight and walk the labyrinth. “What I always tell people is that the labyrinth is not a maze,” said Hogan. “There are no dead ends or tricks. It’s not designed to cause you to get lost, it’s designed to cause you to find your center. You’re not walking the labyrinth to learn about the labyrinth–you’re walking the labyrinth to learn about yourself.” This sort of introspective healing has been practiced for thousands of years among many cultures. “Peace starts here,” said Hogan. “We are not going to affect world change and world peace if we do not have peaceful homes, and peaceful communities. We need to take responsibility for our own energy and what we are putting out into the world, first.” The Sacred Garden also contains a section known as the Mother Shrine, a sanctuary that honors God in the feminine form. When building the facility, a big part of Hogan’s philosophy was creating a safe space for women. “A lot of men don’t realize this, but there’s almost nowhere where women can go in nature alone, close their eyes and really drop in without looking over
their shoulders,” Hogan said. “It’s important to people to have a place in the beauty of nature they can feel safe.” The Garden’s 180-pound guard dog Bodhi also helps. The dog is a lovable giant, named after Bodhisattva, the enlightened one in Buddhism.

ve Eschner Hogan is a labyrinth facilitator, relationship coach, author, speaker, educator and gardener. About 13 years ago she and her husband bought the space that would become the Sacred Garden in Makawao. Back then, it contained a downtrodden greenhouse overgrown with weeds and dead orchids. It was a place that had been used to smuggle heroin in the past, a place of dark energy. “I remember hearing this voice, saying ‘you need to do it,’” said Hogan. She hesitated–fixing up the nursery wasn’t something that was part of her skill set. Then she said the voice told her, “Your name is Eve, get in the garden.” After months of hard work and the help of
many friends, the Sacred Garden today houses a bounty of beauty and growth, and a healing place filled with positive energy and positive people. Above the door, the sign that says “Be Open” is a reflection of Hogan’s original hesitance and the good that’s has come since then. “I wanted it to be a place that wasn’t about the commercial,” she said. “I just wanted something that was here to soothe people’s souls.” The Sacred Garden’s doors are open to anyone who comes across it. It’s located in Makawao, on Kaluanui Road off Baldwin Ave. The space features a 10,000-square foot nursery and a stone labyrinth outside, with reiki sessions, prayers and meditations going on throughout the day. All the plants in the greenhouse are for sale and there are often people praying and meditating throughout the day. It also serves as a headquarters for Hogan’s nonprofit Divine Nature Alliance, the guiding principles of which are education, rejuvenation, inspiration and safety. It’s “really about helping people realize their own divine nature,” Hogan said. Raised in a spiritual family, Hogan was steeped in eastern philosophies at a young age. “It doesn’t matter if your thing is Jesus, or Buddha or nature, it’s all the same God, in different forms to meet the needs of different people,” she said. The practices at the Sacred Garden are all about helping connect people to their spiritual centers in the hopes of fostering wellness in all who visit. One of the many events that take place

ORGANIC CBD PHOTO COURTESY MANA ARTISAN BOTANICS
We talk story with Mana Artisan Botanics’ Steve Sakala
That’s a lot of product
By Foster Modesette
H
emp, more commonly known as the cannabis plant, has long been associated with recreational marijuana use, but the medical and agriculture benefits of this plant are becoming more and more known to Americans and citizens around the world. To learn more, I spoke with Steve Sakala, CEO of Mana Artisan Botanics. The company focuses on education as well as the production of high grade cannabidiol-based products, infused with local Hawaiian products like macadamia nut oil and honey. “Most people don’t realize that the cannabis they get at a dispensary or off the black market is heavily laced with pesticides and fungicides, grown in-organically with chemical fertilizers,” said Sakala. “Then we’re being told to use that as medicine.” By contrast, Mana Artisan Botanics uses sustainable, organic and regenerative farm-
ing methods. Currently, the producing of CBD (cannabidiol) from hemp is illegal on Maui, so the company is using extracts from Colorado. However, recent law changes mean hemp production permits are expected to be available here in Hawaii within a few months. The way CBD works is that it sits in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It helps regulate cholesterol, blood pressure, our insulin system, sleep and all autoimmune functions. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, which means it doesn’t affect the mind or the mental state. This makes it different from the other commonly known cannabinoid, THC. Basically, cannabis rich in CBD can be used to strengthen our ECS without the mind-altering effects of other cannabinoids. “Some scientists are saying that because of our modern-day toxins and stresses, we’re not producing enough of our internal cannabinoids,” said Sakala. “By strengthening our ECS, we are creating an environ-
ment [in our bodies] for balance.” The topic of medicinal hemp has been a touchy one for years because cannabis is not FDA-approved, but Sakala believes the industry will change dramatically in as little as three years. As evidence, he cited a World Health Organization study that was released in December, which reported zero un-safe side effects of CBD. The agriculture benefits of hemp might be just as astonishing. Hemp has been used as paper and clothing for years, though never in large production. The cannabis plant is also part of a family known as phytoremediators, meaning that it can be planted in toxic soil and over time will pull up the toxins from the ground and store them in its own plant tissue. It can then be removed to make way for healthy plant growth. Hemp fields have been used to help strengthen growing conditions in Eastern Europe around the infamous nuclear disaster site, Chernobyl. Sakala believes it could be used to help rejuvenate the toxic soil left
over from sugar cane production in Hawaii. “The amount of people that it [CBD] is helping has far exceeded my expectations, and just about everybody I gave the CBD-rich medicine to, it made a difference in their life,” Sakala said. “Whether it was a better night’s sleep or pain reduction. And of course, over the years we have seen it help much more serious conditions such as MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia, brain injury and concussions.” CBD products can be purchased throughout the country without the necessity of a “green card” due to a 2014 farm bill that allows state departments of agriculture and research institutions to start hemp programs. The local products that Sakala’s company make can be found at Manabotanics.com and at health food stores on the Big Island. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more health & wellness stories, visit: mauitime.com/health

'Hostiles' Scott Cooper’s new western is violent but soulful ★★★★★ Rated R / 134 Min.
T
he opening scene of Scott Cooper’s Hostiles is so unflinchingly harsh and violent, it may cause some audience members to check out early. In the establishing moments, we meet Rosalie Quaid (played by Rosamund Pike), as she’s homeschooling her children while her husband sits close by. Since the setting is 1892 and their home is located in the midst of an open prairie, they’re in plain view of any threat turning up on horseback, which is exactly what they encounter. As a quiet session of schooling becomes an outburst of savagery, Cooper quickly thrusts his viewers into the western genre at its most authentically gritty, male dominated and cruel. This is the kind of landscape where bloodshed can occur for any reason. Cooper’s 2013 drama, Out of the Furnace, similarly began with a jarring scene of brutality to establish the tarnished masculinity and sadism of the characters. However, whereas that film unraveled an overly familiar narrative (that even superb work by Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson couldn’t overcome), Hostiles succeeds
in its examination of how a violent mindset can be created but also overcome. Bale once again is Cooper’s star, playing Captain Joseph Blocker, a celebrated soldier most famous for slaughtering Native Americans and capturing the notorious Chief Yellow Hawk (played by Wes Studi). Blocker is assigned with leading a group across country, in order to transport the shackled Chief Yellow Hawk and his imprisoned family members (played by Adam Beach and Princess Kaiulani star Q’orianka Kilcher). The set-up seems to indicate a change-ofheart story for the tortured Blocker and Cooper certainly puts Blocker (and Bale) through a psychological cleansing of sorts, but nothing here is ever predictable. The grit of the establishing scenes suggest a straightforward revenge tale (which was the case with Out of the Furnace) but Cooper’s film is richer than that. Tougher than razor wire and full of unexpected story turns, Hostiles is an examination of characters facing their wellestablished identities and finding a startling rebirth. Like the best horse operas, this conveys what the hardship of living off an unforgiving land, defending what’s yours, being at the mercy of open spaces and conscience-free criminals will do to a person.
Damn recruiter never told me genocide was so exhausting
While Cooper’s film is rough going at times and has an exciting shootout, I was especially taken by how moving and expectations-defying it is. There have been great Westerns made during this century but this is one of the best, worthy of comparison to the work of John Ford and Clint Eastwood. Cooper’s film is a little too in love with its dialogue, as it digs its spurs in the ground too often for lengthy pauses.Yet, Hostiles is aided by a cast with a great legacy in the genre (Bale in 3:10 To Yuma and Studi in The Last of the
Mohicans and Geronimo: A Warrior’s Tale) and one another (Kilcher played Pocahontas opposite Bale in The New World, while co-star Ben Foster was pitted against Bale in 3:10 To Yuma). Bale’s dialed-back, inward turn as a haunted warrior is simply wonderful. Studi’s powerful presence adds so much to his portrayal and there are great turns by Foster, Stephen Lang, Rory Cochrane and Jesse Plemons. I won’t give away the final scene but will say that Cooper’s film ranks among the few westerns I’d describe as soulful. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
You think you’re an astute observer of human behavior, but at the next dinner party, watch out for whatever’s happening beneath the table, just out of sight, instead of above it. Is your lover toe-fondling your neighbor’s crotch? Is there a gun (or similar-type threat) pointed your way? A dog begging scraps? Money being passed right under your nose? There are secrets being played out right in front of you, just out of sight. You wouldn’t necessarily feel betrayed if you knew them; I suggest you seek to discover them not to right some wrong underway, but rather because knowing what’s going on, in this case, is a lot more fun than not knowing. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
It’s been ages since I last suggested you go on a plate-smashing spree, but I think this week might be a good one for exactly that. Going to town on a stack of ceramic plates would have a triple purpose: Not only is it incredibly satisfying and fun, but it would also serve to wake you up out of the spiritual slump you’ve been in. All that noise might wake someone else, too. See who comes along to investigate. One of them is likely to be a kindred spirit you’d love to meet. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
I know Rams who’ve let their carefree natures, generosity, and occasionally foolish choices drag them deep into dire circumstances. At times they were nearly on the verge of burning furniture to keep warm through the winter. Your decisions this week could lead to an intensification of your current state; if you’re poor already, I’d suggest, just this once, reconsidering them. I think as a general rule it’s best to err on the side of generosity, excitement, and enjoyment of life. This week, however, the cautious, most responsible choice might be the best one. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
What’s a Freudian slip, after all? It’s usually just something you say by accident because you’re distracted, with often-comic results. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything. This week, however, your slips of the tongue might strike closer to home. They might, for example, reveal your true desires, ones you’ve kept hidden from even yourself, or finally expose a secret you’ve longed to tell. Give your verbal fouls a bit of credence. They might be nothing, but it’s still probably worth your while to listen. Could they be messages from yourself to yourself? If so, what are you going to do about them? GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Don’t just sit there and stare at a blank page (or its equivalent). Your problem lately is that you have spent too much time waiting for inspiration, not properly realizing that it doesn’t come (for most) frequently or consistently enough to constitute a proper career, creative or otherwise. Most successful artists have realized, at some point, that it’s best to simply get down to work, do the best they can, and enjoy inspiration when it miraculously strikes, instead of waiting with bated breath for it to arrive. Isn’t it about time you realized it, too? CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Let’s take a moment to acknowledge your powerful craving to “belong” to another person, or have them belong to you. Once you let someone inside that formidable shell of yours, it’s quite easy to want to lay claim to them somehow. It took so much work to get them there that you’re loath to let them leave. However, it’s just that intensity (of course) which is most likely to scare off those who are close enough to get a good look at it. Ironically, there’s nothing else about you that’s likely to frighten away those you’d otherwise be intimate with. It takes incredible bravery to truly let go and trust that someone will stick around, yet I’m afraid you’ve got to find the courage to do exactly that. Your alternative, after all, is crap: trying desperately to keep your grip while they run for their lives. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Leos have a marvelous capacity to influence the world around them. It can lead, however, to a bad habit of walking into a situation, and instead of simply accepting it as it is (and their own status as
newcomers), changing things around to suit their own taste, needs and opinions. You might have better ideas about room layout and interior design, but if you start rearranging your new roommates’ furniture the night you move in, they probably won’t take kindly to it. Tread carefully, Leo. Just because you have the power to change the world around you doesn’t mean you should always use it.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Your lust for efficiency–and your inherent efficacy– means you sorely resent it whenever you have to do something that’s not an especially fruitful use of your time. Having your time wasted galls you all the more because you know just how much you could be doing with it. Nevertheless, since the world isn’t populated entirely by Virgos, it means you’ll have to endure countless hours of this kind of thing. You can mitigate it somewhat by multitasking–making phone calls while waiting in line, for example–but that’s not really the best solution. You don’t have to milk every minute for its maximum productivity, you know. Try another angle, one that’s just as much a challenge, but probably more achievable: milk every moment for its maximum enjoyability, instead. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
I don’t think they happen anymore, but at the Cut and Paste live competitions, designers used their computers and artistic skills to generate designs on a given theme in real-time, while their works-in-progress were beamed onto screens for an audience to enjoy. Their work was influenced by audience reactions in the same way a DJ’s mixing might be based on the dancing and enthusiasm of those listening. I was particularly excited by the infusion of community and interactivity into what might, under other circumstances, be a fairly solitary activity. You, too. could bring more people into the loneliest aspects of your existence, probably in a way that enriches all of you. Why not give it a try?
VOTED BEST
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Distance makes the heart grow fonder, as they say. It works as well when the distance consists of time rather than space; it’s easy to romanticize your memories, for example, and fall in love with a mentally-edited version of someone you once knew, even if you didn’t adore them back when you knew them. Beware of self-delusion this week, as your potential to fool yourself (with the best intentions, of course) is at a yearlong high. This could be dangerous not only for you and your (surprisingly tender) heart, but also for whomever you’re fooling yourself about.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Eschew snobbery–this week and every week. Think of those beautiful people who aren’t aware of how gorgeous they are; they’ll flirt with anyone, because the concept of “out of their league” hasn’t even crossed their minds. Those who’ve become aware of their cuteness, however, often display that awareness in unattractive ways. You’re not naturally snobby. But you’re in danger of crossing that line, based on your charm, good looks, intelligence, experience, or whatever. Remember to keep it cool; yeah, you’re great. So is everyone else. Whether you can appreciate what they’ve got to offer, or not–that’s your problem.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
I see so many Capricorns (and many other signs, besides, of course) defeated by shyness and insecurity. The fact is, most people are somewhat shy and somewhat insecure. Someone’s going to have to make the first move eventually, if anything’s going to happen. Assess the likelihood that it’ll be the other person (whoever they are); it’s very improbable. That leaves you. Be realistic about the situation. Your two choices are: 1. Wait and see, but end up with only disappointment, because nothing will happen. 2. Go for it. This could, of course, go either way. But as it’s the only option that even allows the possibility of something fantastic and inspiring to occur, I can’t imagine you making any other choice. Locate your chutzpah and use it.
