lab test results substantiating the product’s purity and content. This is especially crucial for people with compromised immune systems. Maui Grown Therapies cultivates its cannabis in Upcountry Maui using organic inputs and methods. We grow off-the-grid with solar power and our plants drink recaptured, purified condensate water. Every product we sell is labtested and quality-assured.
CANNABIS CONTROVERSY Allow me to correct an untrue statement made by Steve Sakala, CEO of Mana Artisan Botanics (“Organic CBD,” Jan. 25, 2018). Sakala’s quote, “Most people don’t realize that the cannabis they get at a dispensary or off the black market is heavily laced with pesticides and fungicides, grown in-organically with chemical fertilizers. Then we’re being told to use that as medicine,” is blatantly false. Any cannabis or cannabis product purchased from a Hawai‘i-licensed medical cannabis dispensary is required by law [to] be tested and certified by a third-party lab that the product is free of pesticides, fungicides, heavy metals, mycotoxins and all forms of microbial contamination. Certified lab results for each and every product are available for review in any statelicensed dispensary. The State of Hawai‘i has some of the nation’s strictest lab testing standards for medical cannabis. Conversely there are absolutely no statutory requirements for lab testing of hemp-derived CBD products sold in stores or online. A recent study by Penn Medicine, published in the Journal of American Medicine in November, found that nearly 70 percent of CBD products sold over the counter are inaccurately labeled. The study’s lead author Marcel BonnMiller, PHD believes this is a direct result of inadequate regulation and oversight of the hemp extract industry. Before consuming any hempderived CBD product consumers should confirm the source of that product and be able to review certified
FIRST TIME WE’VE EVER BEEN COMPARED TO A DICTATOR I passed on picking up an issue of MauiTime this week because I honestly felt that the disturbing cover-page of a tropical view of a nuclear mushroom cloud was retraumatizing and unnecessary in so many ways (“Can Hawaii Survive Our Age of Stupid?” Jan. 18, 2018). If anything, it felt thoughtlessly and heedlessly thrown together. To say nothing of its regurgitation online. Our people and visitors were brutalized emotionally for those long, long minutes and, even now, people are telling me they still feel remnants of fear and alarm in their bodies and memories. Your cover image, in my view, heartlessly exploited everyone’s fears. Stacks of issues out there for children to see and read as well. It is reprehensible and shows a clear lack of considered decision-making in the extreme by your paper. I ask that you all consider more carefully the use [of] such imagery in the future. If there was an editorial meeting and deep discussion of the cleverly photoshopped image prior to publishing, I’m interested in you letting us know what your considered discussion was and to what end. We all know the State of Hawai‘i has to get its act together when it comes to emergency response systems–Big Time. It was a failure of epic proportions. But, just think about it: MauiTime went to the easiest, most sensational imagery possible. And this is how autocrats and dictators move the masses. If you can’t inform them, scare them. In the “Age of Stupid,” stupid works both ways. -Fay Hovey, via email

On Feb. 1, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser broke the story that former state Human Services Director Rachel Wong has filed a sexual harassment complaint against Rep. Joe Souki, D– Wailuku. While the story doesn’t detail the allegation(s) against Souki (Wong refused to recount them to the paper, saying she wants a state Ethics Commission investigation to run its course), it does contain a response from Michael Green, Souki’s attorney. Which of the following are actual quotes from Green included in the story? A. “What she said was, they spoke, and he made some comment about being ‘perky,’ and I don’t know what that means, and it was three years ago, but when she went to shake his hand goodbye, I think he kissed her on the cheek.” B. “She just decided now three years later that that must have been sexual harassment? It’s nuts.” C. “They are coming out of the woodwork, man, they are coming, and not just for him, for everybody.” D. All of the above E. A and B only

Coconut Wireless cause you can’t afford bail,” Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) wrote in the June 16, 2017 issue of Time. “Millions of people are separated from their families for months at a time–not because they are convicted of committing a crime, but because they are accused of committing a crime.” On Jan. 31, ACLU Hawai‘i released a new 37-page report on the need for bail reform in the state. Largely written and researched by ALCU Hawai‘i Legal Fellow Ainsley Dowling, the report offers both chilling statistics and insightful analysis on why our system of cash bail is so unjust. Here are just a few excerpts from the report: PHOTO COURTESY FRIENDS OF ELLE COCHRAN
• “With the average bail amount for a class C felony on Oahu being $20,000, it’s understandable why most people can’t afford it.” • During the first semester of 2017, “circuit courts in Hawai‘i set money bail as a condition of release in 88 percent of cases with only 44 percent of people managing to eventually post the amount of bail set by the court.”
Elle Cochran
ELLE COCHRAN’S CAMPAIGN NO LONGER RUNNING DEFICIT If you’ve looked at the campaign disclosure reports for Friends of Elle Cochran at any time in the last eight years or so, you’d see considerable debt. In fact, the campaign committee’s deficit was $58,995.38 as of June 30, 2017. But the committee’s latest report, which covers July 1-Dec. 31, 2017, shows the campaign is now running a $10,131.99 surplus. The reason, according to Cochran– a Maui County Councilmember and Mayoral candidate–and her campaign treasurer: the campaign deficit was due to contributions from Cochran and her husband Wayne, which were listed as loans. “We never intended to reimburse ourselves with campaign contributions, which is why it has appeared as a deficit on my disclosure report all of these years,” Elle Cochran said in a Feb. 1 news release. According to campaign treasurer Sarah Freistat Pajimola, the state Campaign Spending Commission has been very helpful in guiding the Cochran campaign on how to deal with the deficit. “When I came on as Treasurer for the campaign, I started looking into the deficit that had been reported since 2010,” she said in the Feb. 1 news release. “After Elle told me it was she and her husband’s contributions to the campaign using their joint account, listed as loans, it seemed impractical to report the loans as being repaid
to them, by them, so I reached out to campaign spending for guidance.” According to the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission’s Guidebook for Candidate Committees (last revised in December 2017), “Loans and the use of personal funds by candidates to their own candidate committee are exempt from any limits.”
ACLU SAYS HAWAII NEEDS BAIL REFORM Bail reform is one of those civil justice issues that is finally getting a lot more attention nationwide. I mean, even Jay-Z has written about it. “If you’re from neighborhoods like the Brooklyn one I grew up in, if you’re unable to afford a private attorney, then you can be disappeared into our jail system simply be-
• In “91 percent of cases in Hawai‘i, initial money bail simply mirrors the amount set by the police in the arrest warrant. And that amount is based solely only on the crime charged. Thus, initial money bail determinations are overwhelmingly being made without any individualized consideration of flight risk, ability to pay, or danger to the community, resulting in some of the longest lengths of pretrial detention in the country.” • “In Hawai‘i, the consequences of pretrial detention fall disproportionately on Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, who are more likely to be arrested, detained, and unable to afford money bail.” • “Even just a few days of pretrial detention can lead to loss of employment, housing, and custody of children, as well as an increase in debt if the upfront bond was borrowed from a bail bond company.” • “There are just too many people in jail, and not just nationally. Around half of the people sitting in Hawai‘i’s jails have not been convicted of the crime for which they have been charged.”
Overheard “She is a ninja when it comes to this menu.” -Bartender at a Kihei restaurant, Feb. 2
• “The United States currently incarcerates 2.3 million people in our prisons and jails; 443,000 of those people behind bars (about 20%) have not been convicted of any crime and are merely awaiting trial.” • “The United States spends over $13.6 billion on pretrial detention each year.To incarcerate a single individual, the State of Hawai‘i spends about $53,290 annually, which is roughly around $60 million dollars per year for about 1,100 pretrial detainees in Hawai‘i.” • “Six out of nine correctional facilities are over design capacity, and four are over ‘operational capacity,’ meaning people behind bars exceed ‘the number of inmates that can be accommodated based on a facility’s staff, existing programs, and services.’” • “Compared to jails nationwide, Hawai‘i jails have extraordinarily long lengths of stay for pre-trial arrestees. In 2014, a report on Justice Reinvestment in Hawai‘i noted that OCCC had the longest jail lengths of stay among large counties across the country for people ultimately released under non-financial conditions. Of the 39 counties considered across the country, 32 were able to release arrestees under non-financial conditions in 15 days or fewer, but Honolulu’s average lengths of stay for the same type of arrestee was 71 days.” • “[A]rrestees in Hawai‘i who are ultimately released without having to pay money bail are still held in jail–at tremendous cost to the state–for almost three months; while the average time in similar jurisdictions on the mainland is two weeks.” • “[U]se of risk assessment tools for pretrial determinations has the potential to perpetuate existing social inequalities.” • “Even though Hawai‘i law and due process require that at a minimum, ability to afford money bail be considered, our research shows that ability to pay is rarely, if ever, considered in determining the appropriate bail amount.” Of course, none of this is likely to change anytime soon. On Feb. 1, the state House Public Safety Committee voted to defer HB 2221 (co-introduced by nine House members, including Rep. Lynn DeCoite, D–Molokai) that would have largely ended cash bail for those arrested for non-violent crimes. And while Hawaii Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald did appoint a group to study procedures like cash bail (the Criminal Pretrial Task Force), its report isn’t expected until January 2019. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua honored its 2017 Five-Star employees at a gala event last week. The nominees and winners were celebrated by the Executive Team with a five-star menu created by the resort’s award winning culinary team; the Employees of the Year for 2017 are Imelda Concepcion, Housekeeping; April Matsumoto, Culinary; Robert Mora, The Banyan Tree; Ador Ordonez, Guest Relations; Margie Ruiz, Front Desk; Edward “ET” Torio, Engineering. “These Ladies and Gentlemen are the best of the best,” said Executive Chef Daniel Schmidt in a news release. “They deserve a first class experience befitting of their five star performance. It was our pleasure to be part of this very special evening honoring their accomplishments.” The Five-Star Recognition program was created to celebrate and recognize those employees who set the standard in the dedication to their work, positive attitude and overall best in class performance. A total of 181 employees were nominat-
ed over the course of 2017 with 23 quarterly winners who were considered for the Five-Star Employee of the Year recognition. “We are so proud of each of the winners and nominees,” said Mike Kass, General Manager. “Each one of them has truly earned this honor through their hard work and dedication. They exemplify our best and brightest talent and serve as an inspiration to all other Ladies and Gentlemen.” The hotel also congratulated the nominees who earned this recognition in 2017: Carey Catron Walden, Gianna Valone, Marlyn Cuaresma, Emili Janchevis, Craig Pohl, Will Peniche, Walker Crichton, Greene Gaiopian, Leonard Almiron, Iris Balucan, Christian Bumagat, Miho Foster, Michael Burman, Juliana Bitar, Chris Padua, Nuti Pousima and Manuel Virgen.
Foundation’s new Whale & Dolphin Tracker application is now available for download from the App Store and Google Play. W&D Tracker was developed by researchers at PWF in partnership with International Underwater Explorations, a GIS (geospatial information system) company that fuses real-time data from a wide range of sources. With the app, users can record their sightings of marine wildlife from their phone. Information that can be recorded includes the GPS location, group dynamics, observed behaviors, photos, and other data. This information is uploaded in real time and added to a global research database. “We’re excited that members of the public can use Whale & Dolphin Tracker to participate in our research as citizen scientists from any location around the world,” said Jens Currie, PWF Senior Research Analyst. “Their contributions will help us and other researchers track and monitor cetaceans, determine patterns of species distribution, build life histories of individual animals, and study their interactions with the environment.” W&D Tracker was initially designed and built as a web-based application in 2010 to allow PWF’s marine naturalists to gather research data on whale and dolphin distribution and activities in the region surrounding Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kaho‘olawe. An interactive live sightings map on the PWF website displays all sightings logged by the tracker within the last seven days. A similar map for Hervey Bay is available during whale watching season in Australia (July-October). Viewers of both can use species and date filters to see changes throughout the year. A successful fundraising campaign in 2016 provided the funding to bring the webbased application to mobile platforms. “Currently, the live sightings map focuses on tracking data collected from our ocean ecotours that are used as platforms of opportunity for gathering additional sightings information,” said Currie. “Now that more users will have access to [the] Whale & Dolphin Tracker directly from their phones, our crowdsourcing ability and geographical coverage will expand, and so will our knowledge of whale and dolphin distribution.”

In Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat, drivers of black cars are facing high costs to repaint their cars white or silver after President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov banned black vehicles because he thinks the color white brings good luck. Police began seizing dark-colored vehicles in late December, and owners have to apply for permission to repaint and re-register them. The average wage in Ashgabat is about $300 a month (or 1,200 manats); one Turkman told Radio Free Europe that he was quoted 7,000 manats for a paint job, but was told that the price would rise within a week to 11,000 manats. “Even if I don’t spend any money anywhere, I will be forced to hand over pretty much my entire annual salary just to repaint,” the unnamed man said, adding that his black car had already been impounded.
BRIGHT IDEA Noting that “nobody else has done it,” on Jan. 4 Nebraska state Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus proposed a novel constitutional amendment with the goal of stimulating growth in western Nebraska: Delegate complete or partial sovereignty over a designated, limited and sparsely populated area. “If I were a major business, I would not want Omaha or Lincoln... telling me what to do,” Schumacher said. The Lincoln Journal Star reported that the senator believes his concept would attract businesses looking for no state or local taxes and no state or local regulations. It presents the opportunity to “have your own state,” he explained. The Nebraska legislature must approve the resolution before citizens get a chance to vote.
PUBLIC SAFETY Tennessee’s legislature has a newly renovated home in the Cordell Hull building in Nashville, so Lt. Gov. Randy McNally and House Speaker Beth Harwell have been busy outlining some new rules. “Hand-carried signs and signs on hand sticks” will be strictly prohibited because they pose a “serious safety hazard.” Animals, too, will be turned away at the door, reported The Tennessean on Dec. 21. But in a dizzying twist of irony, McNally and Harwell will continue a policy they enacted last year, which allows holders of valid gun permits to bring their weapons into the building.
MY KINGDOM FOR A BURRITO Tampa, Florida, resident Douglas Jon Francisco, 28, was arrested for DUI after he mistook a Spring Hill bank drive-thru lane for a Taco Bell. On Jan. 17, around 5 p.m., the bank branch manager noticed a driver passed out in a blue Hyundai sedan in the drive-thru lane. When the
manager went out to the car and banged on the window, Francisco woke up and tried to order a burrito, according to the Tampa Bay Times. After being set straight about the bank not serving Mexican fast food, Francisco drove around to the front of the building and parked, where deputies found him and administered a field sobriety test, which he failed. “He made several statements that were differing from reality,” a Hernando County Sheriff’s deputy reported.
FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS Richard the 15-year-old pony of Bridgton, Maine has had a rough winter. He was suffering from cancer of his penis and infection when temperatures plummeted to negative 25 degrees, which caused frostbite. As a result, part of the animal’s flesh broke off while he was being examined, the Associated Press reported. The Animal Rescue Unit in Bridgton has taken responsibility for the pony and has raised more than $4,000 for his care, including reconstructive surgery. Brogan Horton of Animal Rescue Unit said the goal is for Richard to live out his life pain-free.
CLICHE COME TO LIFE Outdoorsman Sergey Terekhov, 64, had just let his dogs out to run before a January hunting outing in Russia’s remote Saratov region when one of the dogs bounded back to him and clawed the trigger of Terekhov’s double-barreled shotgun, shooting the man in the abdomen. The Telegraph reported that his brother rushed Terekhov to the hospital, but he died less than an hour after the shooting.
ROAD RAGE Distracted driving caused long backups and at least one minor traffic accident on Jan. 20 as a man wandered along I-95 in Philadelphia–in the buff. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the stripped-down man walked along the shoulder and in and out of the right lane around noon, throwing items at cars before being taken into custody by police. His name was not released.

At the time, police had been looking for Hardison as a suspect in break-ins going back to 2013, so they arrested him, and he received a suspended sentence that ended in October 2017. But a doughnut habit is hard to break: The Virginian-Pilot reported that Hardison was charged on Jan. 18 with robbing a Dunkin’ Donuts store on Nov. 21. ■

hy do you sit on the sidewalk with your 20-something loser friends so people can’t get by? And why’d you scream, “I live here bitch!” when I asked why? Seriously, did you have to go on a rant that we could still hear when we were a block away? Why can’t you have aloha and be pono? “I live here” isn’t an answer and isn’t an excuse to be rude, crude and stupid. I live here, too–for longer than you’ve been alive–but it never occurred to me to use it as a rationale for bad behavior. Bet your mama would be proud. ■

n a warm February evening in Wailuku, a group of teenagers and a few scattered adults are sitting on the floor of an open garage. They’re preparing for battle. Many are dressed in martial arts gis and listen attentively as Clyde Holokai reads a Bible verse–James 2:17–which explores the subject of “faith without works.” Following a discussion on the verse and the ethics of working hard, Holokai’s students rise to their feet and begin Jiu-Jjitsu drills.
10 FEBRUARY 8, 2018
Holokai is Captain Clyde Holokai, a 25-year veteran of the Maui Police Department. He calls his garage-turned-dojo (with a matted floor, framed photos and lots of open space to tumble around) “Fight For Life.” It’s also a Christian ministry that has offered instruction to students of varying ages and for the last 22 years. All preconceived notions of this place resembling the angry Cobra Kai den from The Karate Kid are gone after observing for only a few minutes. The adults are focused but quick to laugh, and the young students are respectful.
One of the teenagers doing forward tumbles stands out. She isn’t wearing a gi but looser clothing and gives her mucholder partner a warm hug after every movement. She smiles easily and watches her teammates with tender fascination. Her name is Casey Gamiao. She’s a Maui High student with Down’s Syndrome and is also a Special Olympics athlete. A week from this very night, she’ll spar in an exhibition match against pro-surfer Andrea Moller in the First Responders Submission Grapplers Invitational tournament. The event is a benefit for the Special Olympics
that pits local police officers, medics, corrections officers and firefighters against one another in 16 10-minute matches in which “Submission Only is the Rule.” Gamiao’s sparring partner is her father, James Gamiao. He’s been a paramedic for 35 years and he’s also a ranked purple belt and, at 57, the oldest member of the dojo. James is also competing in the tournament, which was conceived by Holokai and Maui Firefighter Captain Chris Platiro. The intent of the event is to highlight local heroes, showcase a unique collaboration between various men and women who serve the
sports and ways of participating. “There are different ways to join,” says Laurion. “You can become an athlete, coach or one-day volunteer. The website gives a tidbit of each option. We have volunteers who say, ‘I can’t coach but I can come out to your events.’ You can volunteer on a weekly basis or be a one-time event volunteer. There are currently 3,464 athletes, 1,273 unified partners and 10,000 volunteers around the state of Hawaii. “Monday, Feb. 12th kicks off our new season as we start training in softball,
to take more steps each day and set mileage program goals hit goals. We try to get them to meet their goals and push the health initiative. If we can help them to get healthier, it helps their whole quality of life. “ Following the First Responders event, Laurion, volunteer coach Aaron Swan and Matt Wanderscheid, a Special Olympics athlete from Kihei, are attending an event far outside of the 808 area code. “Next for us is Capitol Hill Day and a meeting with members of Congress, where we’re introducing healthy initia-
to establish this unprecedented event by getting other departments to share his vision. “What we’re doing is the first in the state,” he says. “We made sure we’re all on the same page, set ground rules for the competition, making sure we’re not forgetting that this is for the kids and giving back to them.” Then Holokai started talking about the tournament’s big main event. “In any competition, the main event is looked at as the most important match,” he says. “I speak for everyone who set this up,

county and put on a wild show complete with Taiko drum accompaniment. There’s never been anything quite like this event on Maui. “She just loves it,” says Catherine Hua Gamiao, Casey’s mother. Catherine is an Ohana Task Force Representative for Special Olympics Maui. “In her first year, Casey got a couple of medals and participated in swimming and bowling.” Casey’s bowling experience was a rich one, as she bonded with Jacarra Lewallen, her Special Olympics Maui bowling unified partner. “Casey’s mother reached out and shared with us two years ago the opportunity to bowl,” says Lewallen. “We both became our daughter’s unified partners and teamed up. I am not a bowler at all. We did it for our girls. Being a part of Special Olympics Maui and our bowling family is amazing. We’ve loved every minute of it. The girls were able to spend more time together and the trip to Oahu for state games was so very special. My daughter and Casey are best friends and we adore her family.” Lewallen says her collaboration with the Gamiaos has made a powerful impact on her daughter and her. “As a teacher, mother and someone who is very passionate about individuals with differences and extraordinary gifts, to have every opportunity to be all they were called to be in this world, my heart was touched,” says Lewallen. “Seeing my daughter’s joy to be a part of something, to build friendships and to enjoy bowling was wonderful. She watches her brother be a part of so many activities and I know she just desires to be a part of something special. We love our Special Olympics Maui ‘ohana and we cannot wait until next bowling season.” Catherine Gamiao’s recollection of those experiences and what they mean to Casey mirrors Lewallen’s. “Her experience of meeting new friends and sharing the pride they feel was exhilarating,” she says. Casey says she spent time off from Special Olympics practice after damaging her knee in an accident involving climbing a tree, brandishing a bow and arrow and acting out a moment from The Hunger Games. This wild side to Casey is sometimes out in the open. “She can be shy,” says Catherine Gamiao, “but they had a talent show recently and she got on stage and had a blast!” As Casey works out with her father on the mat, swinging her body on top of his back, she appears fearless and dedicated to executing her next maneuver. After completing a two-minute drill, she looks to her mother, then gives a wide smile and a thumbs-up. “We organized this from scratch,” says Adrienne Laurion, Maui’s Special Olympics Regional Director for state of Hawaii. “It was the brainchild of Captain Clyde Holokai. He approached me in June and asked if we wanted to do something similar to Battle of the Badges. My daughter had just started doing Jiu-Jitsu. Our conversation and mission were very similar in what we hoped to accomplish. What’s been great is that so many people from the agency want to jump in and help the Special Olympics. I thought, maybe we’d have six matches? We had to cut it doawn quite a bit. We now have 16 matches.” The First Responders tournament kicks off a typically busy season for Special Olympics Maui, which offers a variety of

swimming, track & field and powerlifting,” Laurion adds. “Our softball is really big, as we offer T-ball, Coach Pitch and Unified Softball. We have three divisions divided by ability level. We will be training to compete at the Special Olympics Hawaii May 25-27th. We send 100 athletes from Maui, 30-40 from Molokai and five from Lanai. When you add in all the neighbor island teams around the state, we have approximately 800 Hawaii athletes competing and 2,500 volunteers.” Laurion says there’s no cost to participate in the Special Olympics. “We raise the money and send our teams to the competition without them worrying about airfare or costs,” she says. “Proceeds for the First Responders event goes to getting our athletes on Oahu in May.” What’s more, Laurion says that this season started for Special Olympics Maui with new events and recently created programs. “There’s the Holo Holo Club, which we just started two weeks ago,” Laurion says. “We meet once a week to walk. Every Special Olympics athlete or volunteer that wants to walk gets a MovBand, which tracks their movement. We encourage them
tives,” says Laurion. “They’ve received training regarding the health issues facing individuals with intellectual disabilities and how they can be effective messengers of health in our community. [Matt] Wanderscheid has prepared a speech to highlight the data about the disparities they face related to health care.” But that’s all in the future. Everyone still has to compete in the First Responders tournament, which grew out of the “Battle of the Badges” event. “Battle of the Badges was part of the inspiration that morphed and grew into something much larger than that–[it’s] not just Police versus Fire Department,” says Captain Holokai. “We also have medics and corrections officers. Then there’s Sgt. Grant Nakamura versus Dennis Swaine in the Fire Department: Dennis is ranked purple belt and tough as nails. Grant is a wrestler straight out of Iowa and an Olympic hopeful. The guy he lost to went on to win the Olympic Gold. Dennis is tough as nails. We chose them because we think this is a match where the action is going to be crazy.” Holokai explained how he was careful
the most important match is Andrea Moller versus Casey Gamiao. Their exhibition match is at the time of intermission and the most important one. It’s the real spirit of what we’re trying to do here–give to the kids and the community. Even in Hawaii, we can lose focus of what’s important and this event gives us focus.” Back at the Fight For Life dojo, Casey and James Gamiao are hitting the mat and battling for submission. There’s an obvious joy in their efforts, as James guides his daughter through the movements. As they grapple, Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine” plays over the loudspeakers. Before departing the dojo, I ask Casey if she thinks she’ll be able to take Moller at the tournament. Casey smiles. “Yes!” she says, then pumps her fists in the air. The First Responders Submission Grapplers Invitational takes place at the Iao Theater on Feb. 9 at 6pm. Tickets are available at Mauionstage.com or by calling 808242-6969. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

With the expensive, imported grocery store options, we don’t always get quality produce, and everyone appreciates that friend who shows up with freshly grown produce from their land. Haunted House ‘Winchester’ is creepy and old fashioned, but won’t really scare you ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 99 Min.
M
y wife Julia first told me about the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. She told me how, as a child, her mother took her and her siblings there, which has 160 rooms, trap doors and passages and stairs leading nowhere. The massive house, full of random, puzzling touches meant to confuse ghosts, is the creation of Sarah Winchester. Mrs. Winchester believed the home to be infested with the spirits of those killed by the rifles manufactured by her husband’s famous firearms company. At one point during her tour, Julia departed from the group, wandered down a hall and was discovered by an employee. “You need to get back to your tour,” the employee told her. “Don’t you know this house is haunted?” Consider this movie, simply titled Winchester, a prequel to that famous tourist attraction. Jason Clarke stars as a troubled, drug-addicted doctor hired to investigate the mental stability of Sarah Winchester (played by Helen Mirren). The setting is 1906, the house is under constant construction and already the haunting is going
strong. Mrs. Winchester is always dressed in a veiled black dress, house guests are constantly being possessed and even large-scale earthquakes occur within the property. While some of the movie was shot on location, most of this was made in Australia by the talented Spierig Brothers, the directing team of the unique, darkly funny vampire thriller Daybreakers and the wonderful Ethan Hawke-led sci-fi sleeper Predestination. Their latest is consistently spooky and has a strong visual sense but is, at best, merely not-bad. This may be the only haunted house chiller in memory with an anti-gun message, which plays as strangely as it reads. This isn’t the only thing heavy-handed about Winchester. While there are some good jolts early on (a scene involving a mirror is as good as the movie gets), the pacing is too rushed and some of the set-pieces are too large scale to be scary. There’s also the repeated use of a roller skate to generate jump scares, which feels a tad desperate. Mirren gives this a class and gravity that Bette Davis once gave her late-career horror films. While the legendary Mirren is better than this film deserves, at least she isn’t slumming it as severely as she was in The Fate of the Furious or RED 2. Clarke seems miscast
Worst vacation rental EVER
and co-star Sarah Snook (whose performance in Predestination is an underrated wonder) has too many scenes in which she looks scared while carrying a lantern down a dark hallway. This isn’t really an actor’s movie but a chance for the Spierigs to show off and make the audience jump and scream. There was a lot of that when I saw this in a theater, but it’s not the kind of creeper that lingers in the mind long after the lights come back on. Winchester has its moments but it’s also PG13–it’s a safe, creaky, old fashioned throwback. The opening credits suggest a Dan Curtis ‘70s nostalgia trip, but really, Burnt Offerings and
any five minutes of The Others has this beat. It’s worth noting that the website for the Winchester Mystery House not only advertises a Halloween Candlelight Tour and a Friday the 13th Flashlight Tour but dedicates a page to this movie. Winchester may drum up business for its attraction but the best thing you can say is that it’s scarier than Eddie Murphy’s Haunted Mansion. If you’re in San Jose and check out the house, please send me an email and tell me all about it. Just remember to stay with your tour group. After all, you know the house is haunted, right? ■

Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
I’m always amazed at how sex-phobic (and, of course, sex-obsessed) our culture is. Certain people make a fuss over anything provocative; even an accidentallyexposed breast can be major drama. Violence, on the other hand, rarely generates such commotion. I think it’s sad that some people would rather see two people kill each other than get it on (especially if those people are different races, or the same genders). You ultra-rational, progressive Aquarians are supposed to be the ones helping move our society along in the right direction. Have you been doing your part? If not, you’ll get your chance to nudge us in the right direction this week. Don’t miss it. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
I’m not a very organized person; when I clean my apartment, I simply gather armloads of things from the floor, stuff them in the closet, and slam the door shut. To find one of those items later, half the closet’s contents have to come out so I can get to the one I want. Your minds work similarly; I’ve watched Pisceans work their way towards an idea, taking so many detours, side-trips, and tripping over so many non-sequiturs that it’s a wonder they get to where they’re going at all (often, they don’t). Totally reorganization is too much to ask, regarding my closet or your head. But imposing some orderliness, on both, might be a good idea. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
I just described, above, the Piscean brain as a cluttered closet. Yours, on the other hand, is often like an indoor shooting range: a simple, spare space with a target straight ahead, and the means to reach it. Naturally having that much focus is often extremely useful; occasionally, however, blinders that block out everything but your goal are actually the opposite of helpful, because you miss out on extremely important and relevant information. That’s what’s happening this week; although your objective is in plain sight, there are plenty of things that could potentially trip you up along the way, and will, unless you learn to see the (admittedly confusing) big picture. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
If you see someone crying on the train, go ask them what’s wrong. If a stranger smiles at you, don’t be so suspicious as to not smile back. Treating people like friends–or at the very least potential friends–is totally the way to go this week. That’s right, it’s time to exercise your trust, which, like a muscle, has been slowly atrophying. If you don’t give it a workout now, soon you won’t be able to use it at all. A trustless life is not a very satisfying one. Avoid that sorry fate by having trust in others before you know they deserve it, and giving total strangers a chance to trust in you. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Why is youthfulness inherently beautiful? Is it programmed into our genes? Why don’t we, instead, revere and lust after the signs of a life well-lived? Shouldn’t wrinkles and scars be sexy? I guess for many people they are, of course, but as a whole our culture is fairly youth-obsessed. You’ve done plenty of drooling over sexy bodies and pretty faces, of late. This week, though, give facetime to some of the people whose beauty is more internal than external. You’ll get more out of it than the six-pack abs crowd could ever give you. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
When considering a mate, chemistry is far more important than looks, status, location, or timing–especially for you Cancers. You’re wonderful, but let’s face it–you’re also occasionally a handful. You need someone who can not only handle that, but actually enjoy or love it. Of course, no one out there wants to completely prop you up emotionally, so if you can’t yet handle it all on your own, don’t bother looking for someone to do so for you. But there are plenty of people who’d love to come along for the ride. Find one of them, instead of trying to convince whoever’s nearby that they’d love it, too (because, they probably won’t).
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I like that you think you deserve the best. You do. But so does everyone else, when it comes right down to it. Your confidence is powerful, but it shouldn’t substitute for actual worth, especially when trying to capture someone’s attention or affection. You do have a heck of a lot going for you, but because you’re lazy, you depend a little too heavily on just your natural radiance and poise. This week, dust off some of your metaphorical trophies, and show whoever you’re trying to impress that there’s some substance behind all that shine.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
I wish that we could mix and match our characteristics, or even share them with others, sort of like Mr. Potato Head. You, for instance, could unscrew your phenomenal work ethic and lend it to someone else for a while. A few of your friends could make good use of it. While they were transcending their laziness, you could borrow a willingness to luxuriate in pleasure and luxury, which is certainly something I wish you would try out a little more often. Most people who work as hard as you do also play as hard, but you just forget that part of the equation most of the time. This week, won’t you remember it and make good on it? LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
An example of how your sign’s symbol, the scale, fits you, is that you like things that make sense and balance each other out: Commit a crime, suffer a punishment; do a good deed, receive praise and acknowledgment. But as you know all too well, not all crimes are punished, and not all good deeds are noticed, let alone rewarded. The world simply isn’t that neat and fair. This week, however, you can make it a little more so–if not for yourself, then for someone else. Don’t get confused, though; it’s not your turn to mete out punishments or hand out prizes. Your job is just to make sure they go to the right people.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Last night I had sex with Jesus. I dreamt he’d come back for a visit and I had hot, likely blasphemous, joyfully dirty sex with him. I think you’re probably the only ones who could understand what a great dream it was. You’re always pushing boundaries, challenging taboos and repudiating pointless prudishness, so this kind of thing is right up your alley. Oh, wait, did I say you’re always pushing boundaries? I meant most of the time. Lately, you’ve sort of been copping out and toeing the line. Care to get your edgy, button-pushing, taboo-shattering reputation back? This week you can. (You already know what you have to do.)

I’m realistic about this column; given its nature–a weekly paragraph-long horoscope–it’s necessarily a limited venue. So much can potentially happen in a week (or not) that to attempt to describe it all here would be virtually impossible; instead, I make my best guesses and predictions and hope that you guys find it useful, thoughtprovoking, entertaining, or funny. Every once in a while, though, I hit the nail on the head, and I have to confess, that feels good. You, too, in one area in your life, are more or less just making stabs in the dark. This week, though, you’re likely to be spot on. Take note of what did the trick, so you can revisit this minor miracle later. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Couples who fight all the time actually have an advantage over you two. You and whoever you’re arguing with this week aren’t used to disagreeing. You’ve rarely, if ever, butted heads before. Those bickering buddies know that their tiff will blow over, because it’s happened dozens of times before already. But you’re not sure how this fight is supposed to play out, because nothing like it’s ever happened before. Look to those seasoned battleaxes for inspiration and guidance. They know how to have a conflict, and how to move past it. It sounds horrible, I know, but it’s not all bad. The nice thing about duking it out with someone is that if and when you’re done fighting, you’re almost always closer and tighter than you were before.
