controversial issues as you do in this article, why not do a follow up article titled “Would Matriarchy Do Any Better?” And in it, do an interview with a man who has been taken to the cleaners by his “lovely” sweetheart. You know that there are many men who have their own stories of abuse to tell. So why not open up the conversation a bit, and include a section on “how women can be better.” Actually, I think this would be a hit. (2) Also, have you given any thought to providing the readers of each issue with an opportunity for responses to your articles? Do take a second to think about it. Afterall, given the highly charged political and cultural commentary that Mauitime takes on, there are–I think–a number of us who might like to participate in a kind of “open mike” Readers Forum. Just a thought! Carry on! And thanks for Barry [Wurst]’s fine movie reviews.

After completing the article ‘The Patriarchy Is Bad For Men, Too!’ I was left with some thoughts I’d like to share. No ill intent is intended here. Just some ideas that might well expand your readership and deepen the quality of your publication. (1) For instance, when tackling such

HB 2126 IS GREAT FOR HAWAI‘I–MOSTLY

‘KULEANA’ IS COMING TO MAUI THEATERS At last, Brian Kohne’s Maui-made movie Kuleana is on track for release in Hawaii theaters, Kohne said in a Feb. 9 email to supporters. According to Kohne’s announcement, the movie– which he filmed in the summer of 2016–will finally open in Hawaii theaters on March 30, 2018. “A few weeks later we’ll begin our mainland screenings; presumably in the places where our island people congregate,” Kohne said in the announcement. “Later in the year we’ll move to VOD (Video On Demand) and DVD. If our work is well received this year, Television and International opportunities also await.” It's not a surprise that it’s taken so long for Kuleana to get a theatrical release. Filmed on Maui, the movie is an ambitious noir thriller, set in both 1959 and 1971. The movie, which centers on a disabled Vietnam War veteran who rediscovers his Hawaiian heritage as he seeks to clear his father’s name delves into issues of Hawaiian statehood, the Hawaiian renaissance in the 1970s and the near-extinction (and later recovery) of the Hawaiian language. It stars actors from Hawaii–most notably PHOTO COURTESY NATHAN HUGHES HAMILTON / FLICKR

It’s certainly nice to see huge support out there for House Bill 2126, which preserves key Affordable Care Act provisions for Hawaii residents, even if the federal government finally succeeds in destroying them. Representatives Lynn DeCoite, D–Hana, Lanai, Molokai, Angus McKelvey, D–West Maui and Kyle Yamashita, D–Upcountry, were among the bill’s many introducers. “The purpose of this bill is to ensure that coverage for health insurance is available to residents and that certain benefits created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) will continue to exist if the ACA is repealed,” said Gordon Ito, Insurance Commissioner for the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, in his Feb. 12 testimony before the House Committee on Consumer Protection and Commerce (CPC). “This bill serves as a basis for further collaboration between stakeholders to address the complexities of the health care system and the uncertainty of the future of the ACA. Furthermore, this bill serves as a needed mechanism to retain people in the market and would have marketwide applicability. It also seeks to provide needed health coverage to as many residents as possible to stabilize the health insurance marketplace.” Seriously, it seems that everyone likes this bill–the League of Women Voters, all Hawaii’s major health insurers, medical professionals and so on. But there’s a small problem– on Feb. 6, the House Committee on Health and Human Services removed the bill’s original provision that extends dependent coverage of children until they turn 26. Testimony before the House CPC Committee on Feb. 12 was still in favor of the bill, but many testifiers were clearly alarmed at the amendment. “Before the ACA, young adults had the highest uninsured rates of any age group and the lowest rate of access to employerbased insurance,” UH Manoa student and Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawai‘i intern Tiffany Peek testified on Feb. 12. “Many in my age range, while attending school full-time, are only able to work part-time, sometimes at minimum wage. Parttimers are generally not qualified to receive employer insurance, and clearly the money we

earn is not nearly enough to afford health insurance on top of food, tuition, and housing, especially in Hawai‘i. Please reconsider putting back the provision that would allow young adults to stay on their parents’ healthcare plans until age 26. Without it, young people, students and otherwise, would be put at a further disadvantage and return to the days before the ACA, in which many young adults simply went uninsured and gambled on their health.” Given that the bill passed out of the CPC Committee unanimously on Feb. 12, there’s still time for the age 26 provision to get back into the bill. Maybe.

typically have inadequate parking, such as large single-family homes.” There are a lot of changes here. Some will increase a dwelling or building’s required number of parking spaces, while others will decrease the number. For example, a hospital in Maui County currently has to provide one parking space for every three beds. But under the proposed changes, it will have to provide one for every two beds (in addition, a “minor medical center” will have to provide one space for every 500 square feet, with a minimum of three spots). Under the proposed changes, eating and drinking establishments will see their required number of parking spaces decrease, from “1 per 100 sq. ft. of serving and dining areas with min. of 3 for patrons and 3 for employees” to “1 per 100 sq. ft. of amusement, serving, and dining areas (not counting drive-through uses), with min. of 4.” County planning documents show more than 50 changes like these are under consideration. “These are long overdue revisions, and we hope to have strong support from the community, property and business owners, the three planning commissions and the Council,”

COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT TO DISCUSS PARKING CODE CHANGES In a couple weeks, Maui County planners will hold a public meeting on a long list of changes they’d like to make to the county’s parking code. Given how difficult parking (and really, all things car-related) can be on Maui, you might want check this out. “The changes are based on feedback the department has received from property and business owners who have struggled to meet some of the outdated and inapplicable requirements that are in effect today,” states a Feb. 9 news release from the county. “Consistent with modern planning principles, the changes are predominantly more lenient, provide greater flexibility, and are easier to understand and administer. In a few instances, though, the changes would increase the parking requirement for a few specific uses that

said Planning Director Will Spence in the Feb. 9 news release. “No one is happy with the code as it is today.” The meeting will take place at 5pm on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the Planning Conference Room of the Kalana Pakui Building (250 S. High St., Wailuku). Call 808-2707734 for more information.

Moronai Kanekoa, Kristina Anapau and Sonya Balmores. Raising money to fund the project was particularly difficult, Kohne told me, and it’s easy to understand why: this is Maui, and Kuleana’s villain (played by producer Stefan Schaefer) is a powerful land developer. Kohne, who wrote and directed Kuleana, has been working on the film for a while. I first interviewed him about the film in 2013, when all he had was a script, a pitch to raise money and his previous experience making the 2011 comedy Get a Job. Kohne and his crew finished cutting the movie in the fall of 2016. The film debuted at the 2017 Maui Film Festival, where it won the Audience Choice Award. It was later screened at the San Antonio Film Festival (Audience Choice Award), Hawaii International Film Festival, Santa Cruz Film Festival and the Tribal Film Festival in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where it won the Best Feature Award. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Pacific Whale Foundation founder and Executive Director Greg Kaufman, 63, died on Feb. 10 after a battle with brain cancer. “We are greatly saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family,” said Kristie Wrigglesworth, PWF’s Chief Operating Officer, in a Feb. 11 PWF news release. “We mourn his passing, yet we also celebrate his life, his work, and his vision which continues to guide and inspire all of us at Pacific Whale Foundation, including our members and supporters around the world.” Kaufman’s legacy of advocacy and activism on behalf of whales, dolphins, and other marine wildlife continues through

the work of the organization he founded 38 years ago. Kaufman helped form PWF in response to humpback whales being brought to near extinction by commercial whaling. Nearly four decades later, humpback whale populations are thriving. “Greg fervently believed that we could help save whales by educating the public, from a scientific perspective, about theses amazing animals and their ocean home,” said PWF Board Chair Paul Forestell, who co-authored Hawaii’s Humpback Whales: The Ultimate Guide with Kaufman. “That’s how we came to offer whalewatches and other ocean ecotours in the first place– as a way to share our research, knowledge and passion with others.” Kaufman was a whalewatching pioneer on Maui, and had previously served on the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Committee. He was also a leader in whale research, ocean conservation, and marine ecotourism at the international level. In recent years, through his involvement with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and its Sub-Committees on Whale-watching, Southern Hemisphere Whales, and Bycatch, Kaufman was widely recognized for his important guidance. Kaufman was a contributing member to the Southern Oceans Research Partnership, co-led the United Nations Environmental Programme’s Regional Workshop on Marine Mammal Watching in the Wider Caribbean Region, and was the US delegate in an international workshop held in Patagonia to develop a Five Year Global Plan for Whalewatching. He also regularly advised governments, agencies, and other coastal management authorities on developing sustainable and responsible whale and dolphin watching programs, including in Oman, Ecuador, Chile and Australia. “Greg understood that conservation is more than a message, it’s also an investment,” said Blake Moore, Vessel Staff Director, in the Feb. 11 news release. “From using reef safe sunscreen and recycled paper, to eliminating straws on our boats and plastic bags in our stores, Greg was constantly raising the bar for

The Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation announced the availability of several scholarships for Maui residents who will be pursuing higher education next year. The foundation will present at least five $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors who will be graduating in 2018; and at least one $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a current student at the Maui Culinary Academy at University of Hawai‘i Maui College. “A mission of the Foundation is to promote the pursuit of higher education,” said JeAna Gamboa, president of the Maui Filipino Chamber Foundation. “We believe these scholarships will help today’s children to become skillful, well-informed, and active citizens of tomorrow.” The deadline for scholarship applications is March 31, 2018. High school candidates will be selected based on their grade point average (30 percent); standardized test scores (20 percent); activities, awards, honors and employment (15 percent), a brief essay (20 percent), financial need (10 percent) and letters of recommendation (five percent). The selection criteria

for Maui Culinary Academy students will be the applicant’s grade point average (25 percent), the applicant’s activities, awards, honors and employment (25 percent), a brief essay (25 percent) and a letter of recommendation (25 percent). The Foundation raises funds for the scholarship program through its annual golf tournament, which is scheduled to take place April 21, 2018, at The Dunes at Maui Lani. Four different levels of sponsorship are available: Platinum ($1,200 for six golfers), Gold ($650 for three golfers), Team ($450 for three golfers) and Tee ($100). The scholarships will be presented during the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce’s Gintong Pamana Leadership and Scholarship Awards Banquet on June 13, 2018 at the Maui Beach Hotel. The recipient or a representative from his/her family must be present to accept the award. Applications for the various scholarships are available online at Mauifilipinochamber.com and must be postmarked by March 31, 2018. Birds nesting near natural gas compressors have been found to suffer symptoms similar to PTSD in humans, according to researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History, and noise pollution has been named the culprit. The Washington Post reported on Jan. 9 that the team studied birds in the Rattlesnake Canyon Habitat Management Area in New Mexico, which is uninhabited by humans but does contain natural gas wells and compression stations that constantly emit a lowfrequency hum. The steady noise was linked to abnormal levels of stress hormones, and the usually hardy western bluebirds in the area were found to be smaller and displayed bedraggled feathers. “The body is just starting to break down,” explained stress physiologist Christopher Lowry.

In Texas, game wardens came across an arresting sight in Gregg County last November: an unnamed Upshur County man hunting in the nude along a state highway. The Houston Chronicle reported on Nov. 22, 2017 that the hunter, who is a well-known nudist and activist in the area, contested his arrest on charges including hunting without a license, but one look in court at the warden’s body cam footage undermined his case. The man then dropped his appeals and settled the citations.

Huntley found a 13-foot brown tree snake in the niche, according to the Daily Mail, resting on the flush mechanism. “Hopefully, he’s going to be able to come straight out,” Huntley said on a video of the capture, “but he’s a little grumpy.”

BRIGHT IDEA A landlord in Cardiff, Wales, was caught in a compromising position when he offered a special rent deal to an ITV Wales reporter with a hidden camera. The unnamed man posted an ad on Craigslist offering a 650-pound-permonth home with the option of a “reduced deposit/rent arrangement” for “alternative payments.” When he met reporter Sian Thomas at a restaurant to discuss the property, he said, “I don’t know if you have heard of a sort of ‘friends with benefits’ sort of arrangement,” reported Metro News on Jan. 30. He went on to say that if a once-a-week sex arrangement could be struck, “then I wouldn’t be interested in any rent from you at all.” The ITV Wales report was part of an investigation into “sex for rent” arrangements, which apparently are not uncommon in Wales, judging from other advertisements.

Vincente Rodrigues-Ortiz, 22, was arrested on Jan. 24 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the assault and murder of Andre Hawkins, 17, the day before. But when Rodrigues-Ortiz appeared in court on Jan. 25 for arraignment, he questioned the judge about his “other murder case.” WWMT TV reported on Jan. 25 that his query led prosecutors to interview and then swiftly charge him with the March 2017 homicide of Laurie Kay Lundeburg, and Rodrigues-Ortiz now awaits arraignment in that case as well.

In New Hampshire, the state legislature is considering a bill that would hold owners of poultry responsible for the birds’ trespassing. According to the proposal, reported by the Associated Press, “anyone who knowingly, recklessly or negligently allows their domestic fowl to enter someone else’s property without permission” can be convicted if the birds damage crops or property. Rep. Michael Moffett, a Loudon Republican, told a committee on Jan. 30 that one man told him his neighbor was using chickens as a “form of harassment and provocation.” But Earl Tuson, a local vegetable farmer, opposed the bill, noting, “Everyone loves eating bacon until they move in next to the pig farm.”

AWESOME! Rookie metal detectors Andy Sampson and Paul Adams were out looking for treasure along the Suffolk/Essex border in England when they came across more than 50 gold coins and pottery. Sampson said Adams started “shouting and jumping around and dancing.” As for himself, Sampson immediately started figuring out how he would spend the money, which the pair thought might amount to 250,000 pounds or more. Alas, when Sampson showed the coins to his neighbor, he said, “They’re not real–there’s something wrong with them.” Sure enough, when the treasure hunters made inquiries, they found that the coins and pottery were props for the BBC TV show Detectorists. Sampson and Adams told the BBC on Jan. 31 that they have “got over” their huge disappointment and will continue to metal detect. ■

We have no right to get in the way of anyone who lives their life by beating the clock or in a rush. We who relax and enjoy life should stay in the right lane, doing the speed limit, not worrying about cops and just living in the moment. Remember: the left lane is for aggressive drivers and the right lane is for relaxed drivers. Now maybe we all can respect each other… ■

THE P.L.U.R. PIONEER FORM ON MAUI R PE TO T AT Y W S E DJ MARQU BY ALEX MITCHELL

A

few weeks ago, a friend told me that DJ Marques Wyatt will perform at The Dirty Monkey on Friday, Feb. 16. In an instant I was jumping up and down with childlike excitement and I felt a rush of energy burst from my feet to my head. Once I calmed down, my eyes started to water. Not mere tears of joy, these were more like the watery eyes you get after hysterical laughter. It was epic. Then I realized that I didn’t need to buy a plane ticket for this show. There’s a special space in my heart for house music and house music culture. My love for all things rave include the OG warehouse parties full of JNCO jeans (very wide legged jeans worn by ravers, skaters and taggers), Adidas shell toes, candy ravers and Polo Sport ravers in the early 1990s, all the way through to the present-day house music clubs and festivals that take place on the mainland and around the world. In fact, my passion runs so deep that even if I still had my JNCO jeans, I would wear them at home

under my disco ball when I have dance parties in my living room with friends. Back in the day of the 1990s rave counter-culture revolution, there was a certain code of ethics that was lived by, aspired to and shared: P.L.U.R. The acronym stands for Peace, Love, Unity and Respect, and it’s a set of principles that is still relevant today. DJ Marques Wyatt is the ultimate P.L.U.R. Pioneer. “I’ve been following Marques since the early ‘90s when I frequented an afterparty he hosted called ‘Does Your Mama Know’ in Los Angeles,” said Maui’s own DJ Del Gado. “It was such a cool vibe, with soulful music and happy people. It was like an alternate universe where I felt at home. That’s what sparked my fascination for house music–which is still my main love to this day. House music is a feeling of love and happiness. It’s a feeling of escape. It’s a feeling of unity with your fellow house lovers. For a few, sweaty late night hours you can be a part of something beautiful, while dancing your worries away. At the center of this ex-

perience is Marques. He literally embodies house music. His sets are always uplifting and spiritual. But more importantly, he’s a beautiful soul with a kind energy. He always takes the time to talk to fans and genuinely saves space for each interaction.” Wyatt is not a new visitor to Maui. He’s been here many times, has a solid group of friends here and told me that every time he’s on a flight to Maui, he experiences some sort of “heart-opening epiphany.” He feels that when he steps off the plane and onto the ‘aina, it’s as though he’s been “recalibrated with new eyes.” “Maui, itself, has become such a catalyst for new levels of awareness and always manages to spark creative flames within me,” he said. “I seem to get the most profound downloads while visiting Maui. My soul feels at home.” I asked Marques why he’s drawn here, and what he’s most excited to experience on Maui during this trip. “Well, I have a bit of a ‘whale thing’ as

they are one of my spirit animals,” he said. “My visit to Maui at this time of year is no coincidence, so I’m looking forward to seeing those majestic creatures up close and personal. Also, some of the best people on the planet I get to call friends live there. My heart people. It’s a win-win.” Marques Wyatt was one of the few DJs responsible for bringing East Coast deep house vibes to the West Coast. Marques was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. He has records on a variety of labels including OM, Nervous, Strictly Rhythm, Yoshitoshi, Tilted, Missdemeanors, Master Dance Tones and DMC. If it wasn’t for DJs like Marques Wyatt, we would not have the DIPLO’s of the world, nor do I think we’d have sub-genres of hip hop like Trap, or ecstatic dance communities like Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms. Without a doubt, the original house music DJs of our world pounded the pavement and laid the groundwork for today’s electronic dance music. When I spoke with Wyatt about this

He also came to play for my “It’s been quite the journey that’s inevents in LA which helped bring some spired me to grow in ways I could have global profile to LA’s house scene. subject, he agreed. “EDM has definitely been heavily influenced by house music,” he said. “However, I am noticing hip hop getting in on the action as of late.” House music DJs of Marques Wyatt’s caliber are the pioneers of the whole house music culture. They DJ’ed all types of gigs, produced records and promoted underground parties before they became more mainstream. Wyatt belongs in the same category of legendary veteran disc jockeys as “Godfather of House” Frankie Knuckles (Rest in Love), Tony Humphries, David Morales and Louie Vega. I wasn’t surprised when Wyatt told me that those four DJs were some of his greatest influencers. I asked Wyatt about the early days, and how he was first exposed to house music culture. “I had some friends attending NYU in New York City and they said, ‘You must visit–New York has you written all over it,’” he said. “They were right. They took me to a club called Danceteria and the rest was house-story.” Wyatt said that Tony Humphries’ weekly Kiss FM Mastermix mixed tapes really got him hooked. “They were gold at the time, and I was fortunate enough to have friends in New York send them to me in the mail,” he said. Then I asked him how he was first exposed to the Chicago deep house scene. “I first experienced the Chicago house scene in the physical during my ‘Sound Design Vol 1’ Om Records tour,” Wyatt said. “However, I was schooled on the Chicago House Sound via attending the World Club and record shops in New York just before and after Frankie Knuckles moved back. I then began to collect more of the Chicago sound via mail ordering from imports, etc. This young guy used to look after me pretty good. I believe his name was Derrick Carter or something like that.” Of course, Derrick Carter is also a super house DJ, producer and cultivator of underground house music culture throughout the U.S. and Europe. Though Wyatt now travels the universe playing sets and is the founder of DEEP in Los Angeles–which presents and promotes electronic music DJs and artists–his growing a new music scene on the West Coast in the 1990s was like planting a seed and watching it grow. Though it was never easy, he had great mentors. “Frankie Knuckles and Louie Vega were the closest to mentors that I had,” he said. “Living in LA, and the scene came with a unique set of challenges. I had to figure out a lot on my own.” His biggest supporters were actually two of his friends in New York–Judy Russell and Leslie Doyle. “They truly believed in this kid from LA and encouraged me to stick with it,” Wyatt said. “They sent me unreleased music and connected me with many labels and artists whose records I was playing. New York isn’t always that welcoming, but they showed me love and believed in me. I love them for that. Shortly after that, I boldly went up to the DJ booth at the World [a club] and introduced myself to Frankie Knuckles, who was incredibly kind and welcoming. He took me under his wing and let me know I had his full support while trying to get something going in LA. Louie Vega was the first person to have me play at a house event in New York at his legendary Wednesday night at the Sound

with original branches that reach to deep house, tech house, techno, breakbeat, jungle, drum and bass, ambient, downtempo, trance, progressive and more. The origins of house music actually derive from jazz, soul, funk, disco, Philly sound, classic rock, ‘80s industrial and electro wave music. When people find themselves in the company of a DJ like Marques Wyatt, the experience can become surreal. While listening to the music, you start to recognize beats and tracks; you feel the vibe and soak up the energy, and soon all is good. Being surrounded by people who uphold the values of P.L.U.R. (whether they know it or not), is an instant hot shot of community. For the past 20 years, Wyatt has been consistently promoting his DEEP party in LA. It’s quite spectacular that even through house music’s many ebbs and flows, he’s

ment, DEEP is a brand that currently produces music driven experiences. My favorite thing about DEEP is that we bring all types of people together who share a common love for music. It is and always has been a haven for self expression, connection and release. With regard to our goals, we are always in search of new ways to spread the aural love by not just having parties but by creating memorable experiences.” In conjunction with DEEP, Wyatt and his team are also philanthropists. In January, Wyatt and his DEEP community participated in the 2018 Skid Row Carnival of Love in Los Angeles. It’s a community event that offers resources, a day of support and fun for homeless residents. “I’ve always wanted to use DEEP as a platform to serve the community beyond providing a place to dance,” he said. “We wanted

to support/promote charity and give back. Last year, we really stepped up our game, as so many needed help. We did fundraisers for Standing Rock, Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Northern and Southern California wildfires, The Children’s Hospital of LA, The American Diabetes Association, and we recently became one of the sponsors for The Skid Row Carnival of Love for the homeless here in Downtown LA. Currently, we are en route to making our philanthropic branch of DEEP–DEEP Cares–an official nonprofit. I am also a vegan who believes in animal rights. I don’t believe in judging others whom aren’t; I’d rather lead by example and try to educate those interested.” Back on the topic of the house music circuit, I was curious about how Marques feels about the huge transitions that the scene has experienced in the past 25 or so years. In the past, DJs would schlep record bags and crates with them all around the world. These days, a DJ playing vinyl records (as Marques still regularly does) is considered something nostalgic. “I refuse to be one of those disgruntled veteran DJ’s who isn’t willing to accept change,” Wyatt said. “I don’t miss lugging records. However, I do have a monthly allvinyl-night called “REMEMBER?” to stay connected with my roots because I love vinyl. It’s my first love. Those events are actually some of the most fun nights we have at DEEP. However, I find using flash drives very convenient as well–especially at festivals when the elements may present issues. At the end of the day, it’s the music you choose that will speak loudest.” I also asked Wyatt if he misses the energy of the OG rave days. I wanted to know if he still feels the P.L.U.R. essence in the current rave/house music culture. “I think at festivals, P.L.U.R. is something need not be said, because it’s most often the standard way of being,” Wyatt said. “Which is why I like to play festivals most. Festival culture has come into its own, as well as events at clubs that are able to reflect a like vibration. Some of my favorite festivals are Burning Man, Lighting In A Bottle, Desert Hearts, Genius Loci, RHA Festival and Symbiosis Gathering. As far as venues, Output in Brooklyn, Union, The Standard Rooftop & Sound Nightclub in LA, The Great Northern & Public Works in San Francisco and Souleil & Spin Nightclub in San Diego. There are so many!” In addition to playing throughout the U.S., Wyatt told me he loves playing in California because he believes that there’s something special happening in music there right now. He also loves playing throughout Mexico, Canada and plans on adding more venues in Europe to his schedule this year. My final question to Wyatt was what he would say to a new, passionate and upand-coming DJ. “Stay true to yourself,” he said. “Nothing is worth compromising that which is uniquely you. You never want to be afraid to look at yourself in the mirror, as a result of trying to be someone or something else. As they say, you can only be the second best anyone else, if that.” Tickets to Marques Wyatt’s show at The Dirty Monkey are $15-20. 'Cooking From The Heart' THE JOY OF DINING AT SALA DANG THAI KITCHEN IN HAIKU

The menu has a good selection, but it isn’t overwhelming with choices like Thai restaurants can sometimes be. The portions are large. There are curries, stir fry and noodle dishes and soups which can be ordered with chicken, beef, fish or pork options as well as clam, veggie or tofu. The bulk of the ingredients are from Maui, and their freshness is clear. Local basil, papaya and crisp vegetables make for quality dishes.

vice isn’t always fast, but that adds to the authenticity of the place. “We’re not professional, corporate restaurant people, so we’re discovering things as we go,” says Dalton. Depending on the day, you’ll either have the place to yourself at a table or it will be totally crowded with locals and tourists. Last time we were there, there was a large group of around 20, so it’s a good choice whether you’re a couple or a birthday party.

Scott Dalton and his wife, Dang, run all aspects of the business. “We both knew how good Dang’s food was, she’s wanted a restaurant since she’s been on island,” says Dalton. “We outgrew [the truck], and a new opportunity presented itself.” Three years ago, they moved across the street, and changed the name to Sala Dang Thai Kitchen. Dang is originally from Issan, located in northeastern Thailand, and has lived on Maui for 26 years. Her first gig on Maui

The Pad Thai, served with a good measure of tamarind, is excellent. The Coconut Ginger Soup is also a winner, and it’s full of fresh vegetables. The Evil Prince Curry is very deserving of its name (in a good way). And the spring rolls are delicious. Our dishes were served mildly spicy, which was good for us, but those preferring it spicier need only ask. The best way to eat here is family-style, with a yummy Thai iced tea to complement the spices in the meal. The restaurant is BYOB, with no corking fee, which is easy with Fukushima’s or Haiku Grocery just down the block. A good brown ale or IPA goes well with Thai food. Like many places in Haiku, the ser-

Whether a post-hike spot with friends or a charming, offbeat date night, Aunty Dang’s kitchen has a sweet local vibe and a full plate at a fair price with gracious service. Like many of those who have come to Maui, Dang has brought the flavors of her homeland and uses the fresh local ingredients of Haiku to enhance her fare. “We’re cooking from the heart, and I hope that comes out in the food,” says Dalton. It does. ■ jen@mauitime.com For morefoodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

was at the Grand Wailea’s now-closed nightclub, Tsunami, where she cooked the club’s famous nachos. Together, the couple has created a cozy restaurant that fits the Haiku vibe. “It’s home style, comfort food, simple food–the way Thai is meant to be,” says Dalton. “Naturally simple.” Dang is motivated by places that give generous portions, which is where the heaping plates come from. “She’s inspired her to give good value to hardworking people in Haiku,” says Dalton.

amongst the banana trees. Because it’s a little off the beaten path, the restaurant is quiet and calm at lunch and dinner. The restaurant is situated in an old plantation house, and you can dine inside near the contemplative Buddhas or on the covered lanai. A string of Christmas lights and wild chickens roosting in the treetops add to the ambiance of a Haiku nightlife, as does the resident cat, Coconut Milk, that saunters through the grounds. Cudra Clover with a few of her silk paintings Solo Artist Exhibition will open to the public at the Hui No‘eau. Clover’s multimedia art explores natural forms. Her science-inspired pieces have names like Scorpion Martini and Moonjellies. They make bold and exploratory use of color to represent flowers, water and other subjects of nature in unexpected ways. “In my studio I endeavor to create new worlds on a microcosmic level,” she says on her website (Cudraclover. com). “I explore pandemics, viruses, water, genetics, plant cells, etc. These pieces are petri dishes I create with the intention of healing our planet’s imbalances. I spend time with a camera, a microscope, projectors, biologists and pour over thousands of technical science photos. I seek to draw attention to the urgent need to respect and protect nature.” Her exhibition, entitled Hysteria , explores the subject of overstimulation through textiles and multimedia. Her work for this showcase uses color and movement to create a mood of ab-

stract wilderness. Clover’s works will be presented in an interactive multimedia experience. Her pieces–like her vibrant biomorphic silk paintings–use a variety of media. The Hui’s ongoing solo artist’s project is unique in that the artist is involved with all aspects of the planning and installation for the exhibition. It’s a challenging and creative opportunity for an artist to produce a cohesive and original body of work. Clover, who has exhibited her work in Hawaii, Chicago, Denver and China, is one of the founders of artCORE, a Maui collective whose goal is to get the community involved in interactive art and has produced art events such as some of the MACC’s ArT=MIXXs. Her work is exhibited in the permanent collection of the Hawaii State Museum of Art and Culture and in public spaces and hotels. 'Fifty Shades Freed' Somehow this movie makes sex boring ★ ZERO ★ ★STARS ★★ Rated R / 105 Min.

S

o here we are, the third film based on the publishing sensation, created by E.L. James as Twilight fan fiction, which she transformed into a trio of hilariously crappy “books.” Hearing my wife read me aloud passages of those unfathomable bestsellers was such a riot that we’ve gone to every one of these movies on their Thursday preview night. For the first movie, the line getting in was massive and the in-theater anticipation beforehand was audible. At one point, a very-excited (and presumably drunk) lady yelled out, “It’s Fifty Shades, people!” Fans of Star Wars seemed drowsy in comparison. Two movies later, the screenings have grown quieter. Seeing the first Fifty Shades of Grey felt like taking part in a scandalous social phenomenon. Now, it’s like seeing the latest Madea or another Saw. What began as a business proposal between the brooding, horny billionaire Christian Grey (played by Jamie Dornan) and the innocent, naive interviewer Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson) grew into an actual relationship and now, they’re married. The opening wedding sequence has less heat than the union

between Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy in The Muppets Take Manhattan. Now that these two lovebirds are embracing domesticity, is there anything left for these movies to show us? Actually, no. Initially, Fifty Shades Freed plays like a celebration of all the lavish stuff the one percent consider an average weekend: sudden, unplanned plane trips, excursions across a lake, a stay in a massive getaway and (my favorite scene in the movie) a shared bubble bath in front of a massive window with lots of paparazzi potential. The Greys chat with friends, sunbathe semi-nude and take a pointless hike. This latter event annoyed me, as there are no bear attacks or sprained ankles and no one even gets a sliver. All this makes for a hypnotically dull, aggressively sleep-inducing movie. Of course, the Greys do have sex and the sex scenes are to these movies what the car chases are for the Fast and Furious franchise: overchoreographed, laugh-inducing and never believable. As far as cinematic sex fantasies go, women and men deserve so much better than this. Some of the naughty encounters go by so fast, I didn’t know if the censors cut them down or if the moviemakers are simply as bored with the Greys going at it as we are. A real problem is how this interjects an

Shhh–don't say anything! I'm trying to hide from my agent.

unintentionally hilarious subplot about the dastardly “Jack Hyde” on top of the never-engaging scenes of business and married life. The movie isn’t smart enough to make the obvious point that the legally binding contract called marriage is just another arrangement of sexual slavery shared between the Greys. Or that talking about an off-camera moment Christian shares with his sexual mentor (played in the last film by Kim Basinger) isn’t interesting if we don’t see it. To a degree, I totally get it. This is an erotic fantasy and kinky escapism. I’m all for it. Allow me to recommend Pierce Brosnan and

Rene Russo in the red-hot The Thomas Crown Affair. Or watch Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks. It will melt your television. Or, you can just watch this movie, in which a visibly embarrassed Johnson shares scenes with the monotone, shark-eyed Dornan. Sex has never seemed less interesting. This is the thought I carried with me as I left the Fifty Shades Freed screening. To use a bedroom metaphor: if these movies started off as a hot seduction, they are now the equivalent of a bored, let’s-justget-this-over-with quickie you forget five minutes later. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Sometimes I wait until I have guests coming over before I properly clean my apartment. Similarly, Valentine’s Day (bullshit though it is) can be a jump start for your sense of romance, even if you didn’t actually have a date last week. It’s totally arbitrary, but it just might work. You should embrace romance more often, just like I should scrub my place whether or not I’m expecting company. But we both know it doesn’t work out that way. Well, at least it can work out some way, this week. Ignore the schlocky artificial trappings of stuff like Valentine’s Day, but find your way to expressing and experiencing something truly romantic.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You’re more motivated by rewards than punishments. Fear of consequences or reprisals won’t usually get you to do something you don’t want to do. But the chance at recognition, impressing someone you admire, or even more tangible and delicious desserts will often get your ass in gear when nothing else will. Unfortunately, you’re not lucky enough to have anyone goading you with either potential chastisement or praise at the moment. You have to be your own taskmaster/benefactor, and provide your own reprimands or compliments, punishments or rewards. Play that role for yourself, or look forward to a week where you don’t get shit done.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Perhaps you’re sending out the wrong signals. People keep trying to do nice things for you, but their efforts are missing the mark, because they’ve gotten the wrong impression of what you want or need. You appreciate their attempts to please you, of course, but you can imagine how disappointing it is for someone to go to tremendous trouble only to receive a heartfelt, “Well, it’s the thought that counts,” when they thought they’d hit a home run. It’s not them, though. It’s you. Be more obvious, especially this week, about some of the things that might make you especially happy. Help us, in other words, help you. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

I love it when my dog gets so excited about something that he vocalizes in a way that really sounds like he’s trying to talk. Unfortunately, people might have more luck understanding my pup’s nonsense than figuring out what you’re attempting to articulate this week, because your normal verbal prowess has more or less abandoned you. It’s possible to prevent a lot of confusion by simply keeping your mouth shut. That doesn’t mean turning into a wallflower, however. (As if!) It just means you’ll have to communicate primarily non-verbally this week. You may find, however, that you’re not only quite good at that–but it can also be incredibly fun. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Some Bulls clung faithfully to their flip-phones until they had no choice but to glumly upgrade to smart phones. I don’t think it’s an especially Taurean trait to resist embracing new technology, per se, but each of you picks one particular area of your life in which to drag your feet. Anyone who pushes you to move faster in that direction usually gets gored and trampled. Resisting change is fine, when there’s good reason for it; the world moves too fast sometimes. But give us a little credit here; we know you. If one of your friends is pushing you faster than you want to go, there’s probably a good reason. Instead of being ornery and punishing them for their good intentions, would you please consider just going where they’re trying to take you?

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

When learning math in high school, I absolutely sucked at memorizing formulae and remembering the kinds of problems they applied to. However, if someone could explain to me the concepts behind solving the problems, I did quite well. Naturally, this was a more complex way to convey the necessary information, when most people were perfectly happy to simply remember that for problem A they plugged in formula C, and so on. Pat, superficial solutions won’t work for you either. You have to understand the problems behind the problems, and solve those. Beware of anything that smacks of a simple answer this week. That’s likely to only cover over the problem so you can ignore it until it’s much, much worse. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

I can think in three different languages; it’s interesting to watch, based on my proficiency in each language as well as the structure of the language itself, how my thoughts and perceptions change. It’s like putting a different filter on a camera lens, or a different color gel on a spotlight. I find it helpful at times to switch modes, to see something from a slightly different angle. You could benefit, too, from a somewhat altered perspective. Experiment with different ways to change your viewpoint on your most troubling problems, in order to see a way through what’s otherwise an untenable situation. If all else fails, I’ll suggest one change of perspective that almost always works: distance. Going far away from your quandary for a while means you’ll almost certainly see it differently, and perhaps also see a way through it that wasn’t obvious before. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

How well can you transcend your habits, even temporarily? I’m sorry to say that you’re probably more in their grip than you’d like to imagine. Would it take a diagnosis of lung cancer for you to quit smoking, for example? Or could you do it before things got that extreme? If you give the universe no alternative but to give you a sign you can’t ignore, it will do exactly that, sooner or later. However, if you prove willing to heed lesser signals and free yourself from your worst tendencies before they get the best of you, you might get one this week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

What would a movie of your life be about? I know you’ve got some compelling story to tell, but I’m afraid you may have lost track of what it is, buried beneath the mundane details of your daily existence. This week, rediscover some of the more extraordinary chapters of your life (preferably more engrossingly than merely perusing old photos about them). You need to remind yourself of some of the cooler shit you’ve already done, so when you embark on the next great adventure of your life this week (waiting would be pointless and lame, after all), you’ll be inspired to try something truly new.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

When was the last time you really challenged yourself? I mean really tested what you could do, by taking on something you honestly didn’t know you could probably succeed at? Mostly you’ve been playing it relatively safe lately, only trying things if you were pretty sure they would work out well. How boring, and totally unworthy of you. You’re supposed to be the adventurers and risk-takers of the zodiac. Your street cred is sinking fast, baby. Better do something dramatic to beef it up, and soon, or you might find yourself the new astrological homebodies everyone feels slightly sorry for.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

This week is a perfect chance to “reset” a friendship. If your relationship with someone has gone somehow awry, here’s a chance to correct it and put the whole thing back on a better track, one that leads to greater intimacy, hilarity, and love, rather than frustration, confusion, or jealousy. They’d accept a sincere apology now, even if they’ve rejected them before. It’s not just about making amends, though. By the end of this week, you want your friendship to not only be back to where it was once, but somewhere way better. Settling for less would just be boring and lame.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You have a reputation for being unforgiving, but I think it’s mostly undeserved. I’ve seen you, after all, give people third, fourth, or fifth chances. You deserve that unkind label only in regards to yourself–because you almost never give yourself even a second chance to fix something you’ve screwed up, let alone more. Can’t you be a little gentler with yourself, at least this week? You deserve a few tries, especially because what you’re attempting now is something you’ve never done before.
