These days, it’s fashionable for people and companies to label themselves “green” for marketing purposes. But most are more concerned with brand recognition than in doing what’s best for the environment. That’s why each year, Mauitime’s Green Issue focuses on individuals and organizations who are truly making Maui more ecologically sustainable. 2

Senator Akaka
Love. Courage. Care. Empathy. Collegiality. Dignity. Respect. Humility. Kindness. Grace. Compassion. Warmth. Aloha. These are just some of the words Hawaii officials are using to describe former U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, D–Hawaii, who died on the morning of Apr. 6 at the age of 93. The first Native Hawaiian to serve in the U.S. Senate, Akaka was a schoolteacher and administrator who went one to spend more than three decades in public service. “Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka embodied the Aloha Spirit,” U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, who succeeded him following his 2012 retirement, said this morning. “He dedicated his life to serving the people of Hawaii as an educator, and in the U.S. Army, state government, the U.S. House, and the U.S. Senate. In Congress, Senator Akaka’s care, empathy, and collegiality served as an example for us all. It’s an honor to sit at his desk in the Senate chamber, and we continue his work to improve the lives of veterans and the Native Hawaiian community. My thoughts are with Millie and the Akaka ohana in this difficult time. As he so often said, mahalo nui loa, my friend.” Most famous for his Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act (the “Akaka Bill”) which he first submitted in 2000, the bill recognized Native Hawaiians and officially granted them the authority to form their own government. But the bill never became law–racists on the right hated it because it assisted people who weren’t white while many Native Hawaiians themselves opposed it because they felt the U.S. government, which stole Hawaii in the 19th century, was in no authority to convey any sort of legitimacy on the Native Hawaiian people.

LILI‘UOKALANI INSPIRES INDIGENOUS WRITERS– AND AMERICANS, TOO Quite possibly the most moving thing a person new to Hawaii can do is fly over to Oahu, head to Iolani Palace, put on those special foot booties the docents give people so their shoes don’t muck up the floors, then visit to the Quilt Room. This, which for obvious reasons is also known as the Imprisonment Room, is where the white men who ruled Hawaii in 1895 chose to hold Queen Lili‘uokalani, following an unsuccessful revolt by loyalists to restore the Hawaiian Kingdom. For eight months, Lili‘uokalani was made to live entirely in this room. Allowed just one female companion, the deposed queen could only quilt, crochet, pray and write music. As a Kanaka Maoli, used to being outside and feeling the land under her feet, the confinement must have been particularly dreadful. There’s no way a sentient American capable of exhibiting at least some empathy can stand in this room today and not feel a wave of emotions: sadness, anger and, for those who find the courage to imagine life in Hawaii before the 1893 coup, regret. Were it possible, I’d make every visitor to Hawaii visit this room before starting their vacations. Of course, this isn’t possible for a whole host of reasons, but that doesn’t let anyone off the hook. Understanding the truth of how Hawaii came to be part of the United States is still vital for everyone who visits or moves here, and that’s made a lot easier through reading. A great place to start is Lili‘uokalani’s own autobiography–Hawaii’s Story By Hawaii’s Queen–but those lacking the patience to read an entire book could absorb a good deal of knowledge and beauty from

Daniel Heath Justice’s new essay in the Canadian journal The Walrus. Titled “The Hawaiian Queen Who Taught Indigenous Writers to Resist,” the essay both sums up the importance of Lili‘uokalani’s story and the power of her writing–especially her songs, like “Aloha ‘Oe,” which though written years before the overthrow, came to inspire Kanaka Maoli resistance to the white supremacist “republic” that the United States eventually annexed. “Most strikingly, and with more than a little sharpness, her book continually reminds the US citizenry of its much-lauded principles and how they fall far short in the matter of Hawai‘i,” Justice writes in the essay. “Toward the end of Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen, she makes a fierce statement on Hawaiian autonomy and the

REMEMBERING THE LATE SEN. AKAKA
“This bill basically makes the Hawaiian people wards of the federal government through the Department of the Interior [DOI], similar to the Native American Indians,” activist Dennis “Bumpy” Pu‘uhonua Kanahele told MauiTime back in 2005. “The bill is also missing the infrastructure to provide the badly needed services to improve the lives of Native Hawaiians. The bill does not set up a sovereign state; instead it sets up a committee to elect a group of people. Then this group has to negotiate with the federal government to be recognized, to have land, to have rights. This is not self-determination. This bill does not immediately address the issues we have.” Indeed, the Apr. 6 Honolulu Star-Advertiser story on Akaka’s legacy couldn’t help but notice that, though loved by most everyone in Washington, the late Senator was often derided for not being particularly effective: “ His propensity to avoid the media spotlight led to some notoriety,” stated the paper. “Congressional Quarterly’s ‘Politics in America’ described him in 1994 as ‘virtually invisible,’ and Time magazine in 2006 ranked him among the five worst senators, describing him as a ‘master of the minor resolution and the bill that dies in committee.’ At the time, many people who knew Akaka thought the Time ranking was subjective and unfair, mistaking his humility and focus on Hawaii for weakness.” Akaka was reliably–but not exclusively– liberal in his voting. Indeed, in 2005 Akaka absurdly voted for oil drilling in Alaska. At the time he claimed it was to assist a tribe of Alaskan natives, but given the far greater number of Indigenous opponents to the drilling, Akaka’s vote accomplished little beyond outraging many progressives throughout Hawaii. Governor David Ige, who said Akaka “led a life of service and aloha,” has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until

deeper threat to American democracy represented by the coup, including an eerily prescient prediction.” Justice then quotes Lili‘uokalani directly: “It has been shown that in Hawaii there is an alien element composed of men of energy and determination, well able to carry through what they undertake, but not scrupulous respecting their methods. They doubtless control all the resources and influence of the present ruling power in Honolulu, and will employ them tirelessly in the future, as they have in the past, to secure their ends. This annexationist party might prove to be a dangerous accession even to American politics, both on account of natural abilities, and because of the training of an autocratic life from earliest youth.” These are vital words. Because as Indigenous writers like Justice understand only too well, the same societal forces and structures that ground down the Hawaiian

WESTIN NANEA OCEAN VILLAS CELEBRATING 1ST BIRTHDAY The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas is celebrating its first birthday April 16 with an evening of food, drinks and live entertainment. The public is invited to enjoy dishes featuring farm-fresh ingredients from Kula Produce, Maui Prime Seafood and Makaweli Ranch. Libations will include Maui Brewing Co., Kohola Brewery, Ocean Vodka and more. As part of the celebration, General Manager Chris Rabang is honoring the resort’s values and accomplishments, its associates and their dedication to the community. “By living through our resort core values of Commitment to the Hawaiian Culture, Service to our Community, and Operating Environmentally Responsibly through Sustainability Efforts, we have set the right foundation with each of our associates–all who are committed to providing genuine, authentic Hawaiian experiences to those we work with and work for,” said Rabang in an Apr. 6 news release. “I could not be prouder of our ‘ohana and I look forward to a bright future ahead.” During its first year of operations, the resort achieved the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Distinction for excellence in hospitality and earned a Gold LEED Certification for resort-wide sustainability initiatives. On a local level, The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas gives back to its community by donating educational supplies to Punana Leo o Lahaina (the local Hawaiian immersion school) planting indigenous plants with Hoku Nui to perpetuate the land, and partners with local businesses to source farm-fresh products for its signature restaurants. The resort also actively
partners with national organizations such as the Make A Wish Foundation, Salvation Army and Relay for Life. Rabang said the resort takes pride in giving back to the local community; since the resort’s opening, its leaders and associates have participated in over 18 community service projects and fundraisers including Charity Walk, Beach Clean Up, Malama Honokowai, Boy Scouts–Recycling Project, Relay for Life, Blue Aina, Walk to End Alzheimer’s and others. Rabang said the property’s mission to authentically communicate the cultural significance of Hawaiian history and traditions is unique to the resort; those values can be seen in its landscaping, features and design including the cultural works of art on display in the lobby entrance that were created by local artisans. Also, the property supports the naturally occurring ecosystem–and uses less water–by having more than 75 percent of the plants on the property be native or endemic to the island of Maui (specifically the district of Lahaina). Water conservation is also emphasized through the energy efficient HVAC systems using water source heat pumps; this system eliminates the use of CO2 emitting cooling towers by circulating water from the earth in a closed loop method and saves thousands of gallons of water every day. The large ponds on site are retention basins and the large open spaces surrounding the resort are detention basins, which have proven to successfully collect storm-water runoff. Celebrate with the Westin Villas on Monday, Apr. 16 from 5-8pm; cost is $35 per person, non-inclusive of alcohol. Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa Maui has promoted Rhett Ferguson to Director of Group Sales, hired Krystle Alcain as Digital Marketing Manager and hired wedding planners Maxyne Koester and Sarah Hovis. Ferguson began his career with Hyatt Resorts 18 years ago. He’s been a sales manager for the Hyatt Regency Maui since 2007. In 2017, Ferguson was promoted to Associate Director of Sales, where he lead the resort’s leisure sales team for the last eight months. In his new role, Ferguson will lead the Group Sales efforts for the resort, which is one of the leading group destinations within the Hyatt Resort portfolio. “Rhett is an incredible member of our team here at Hyatt Regency Maui,” said Ben Premack, Director of Sales, in an Apr. 6 news release. “His knowledge of the group sales industry coupled with his expertise on Maui makes him an invaluable resource to our clients and team.” Ferguson began his Hyatt career at the Hyatt Rickey's before moving over to the Grand Hyatt San Francisco where he worked in convention services and group sales. He has an undergraduate degree from SUNY Geneseo and a Masters in Hotel Administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Hyatt Regency Maui also recently named Krystle Alcain as the new Digital Marketing Manager. “We are thrilled to welcome Krystle into our Hyatt Regency Maui ohana,” said Premack. “Her go-getter attitude and experience with strategic content creation will help elevate our resort’s already phenomenal online presence and
strengthen our brand awareness among consumers.” Alcain is an experienced professional with a focused background in hospitality and tourism. She began her career at the Maui Ocean Center where she climbed the ranks to Branding and Marketing Manager. She most recently served as the Public Relations Manager at The Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas and The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, where she managed public relations and advertising efforts. Alcain grew up on Maui and has a bachelor of science in landscape architecture from Colorado State University. Hyatt has also appointed two experienced wedding sales managers to help couples plan their dream wedding on the Ka‘anapali coastline. Maxyne Koester and Sarah Hovis come to the resort from Levy Restaurants and Montage Kapalua Bay, respectively, and bring a collective 13 years of wedding and event planning experience to the resort. “Maxyne and Sarah bring exceptional event coordination and creativity to our team,” said Frances Goss, Director of Events. “We are dedicated to providing couples with romantic and memorable wedding celebrations infused with authentic Hawaiian style, and Maxyne and Sarah guide our couples through this, while ensuring they have a uniquely personal experience.” As a Catering Sales Manager for Levy’s Restaurants, Koester managed a range of events from weddings to arena-sized concerts to the Baseball College World Series. While at Levy’s, which is a nationwide management group serving 200 sports and entertainment venues, Koester coordinated with clients throughout their entire planning process from site tours to menu sampling to managing the day of the event. Hovis’ background as a Maui-based wedding planner, as well as member of the Montage Kapalua Bay catering team, has given her a unique talent for assisting couples in planning their dream Hawaiian weddings. Through the planning and coordination of hundreds of Maui weddings, Hyatt officials say she’s amassed an enviable network of wedding vendors based in Maui, which she uses to match the ideal vendor to her wedding couples. Voted Best Wedding Venue by readers of the wedding resource The Knot in 2018, Hyatt Regency Maui can accommodate intimate ceremonies and celebrations in scenic, private locations throughout the resort as well as large event with hundreds

News Of The Weird OOPS! A man playing with a baseball on the roof of a parking structure in Honolulu on Mar. 23 had to be rescued by firefighters after he fell into the space between two buildings and got stuck, KHON2 TV reported. Security guard Ray Rodrigues was dispatched to the roof to run the 55-yearold off, but found the man had fallen into a seven- to nine-inch-wide space between the cement walls. When pulling him out with a rope failed, firefighters resorted to using drills and saws to cut through the concrete to free him. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Police in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, appealed to the public for help in late March tracking down a most unusual perpetrator. “Over the past year and a half,” the department posted on its Facebook page, “someone has been clogging the women’s toilet (at the Deland Community Center) with a 20-ounce soda bottle. This is very strange... and gross.” The Sheboygan Press reported that the string of more than 25 incidents began in 2016. Joe Kerlin, the city’s parks and forestry superintendent, says the suspect is likely an adult male, based on security camera footage from outside the restroom. The city’s resulting plumbing bills have totaled between $2,000 and $3,000.
WHEN PEOPLE HARASS COWS A dairy truck driver lost his job in early March after being caught on a surveillance camera urinating near dairy cows in a barn at Tremblay Farm in Highgate, Vermont. While no charges were filed, Monica Massey of the Dairy Farmers of America said the driver’s behavior was unacceptable. “We saw the videos. What we saw was deplorable,” Massey said told WCAX TV. Darleen Tremblay said she was “shattered” by what she saw on the video. “I couldn’t move. I froze and I shook,” she added.

The Snell Family Park ficus tree, a sprawling giant that has shaded the park in Fort Myers, Florida, for more than a century, played the part of groom to several brides on Mar. 24 as Karen Cooper and others tried to save it from being cut down. The News-Press reported that while its roots are on the park property, some of the limbs in the tree’s 8,000-square-foot canopy extend to an adjacent property that is for sale, and potential buyer Jeff Romer was concerned about his liability for the tree’s upkeep. In December, Fort Myers’ public works officials approved the removal of the tree, prompting protests from Cooper and others. She got the idea of marrying the tree from women in Mexico who have been protesting deforestation. “I thought,
‘Oh, we should marry the ficus tree’–kind of giggle, giggle.” A city spokeswoman said the city is moving ahead to save the newlywed tree, but Cooper is worried that the decision is not final. “If they cut down this tree, I’m going to be a widow.”
INEXPLICABLE Eastern Michigan University student Andrew (who didn’t give a last name), 22, wasn’t making any kind of statement or protesting any government action (or lack thereof) on Mar. 12 when he filled a pothole in Trenton with a whole box of Lucky Charms and a gallon of milk. Andrew then lay on the road with a spoon and ate the cereal out of the pothole. “I don’t know where the inspiration came from, but when it hit me, I knew it was a good idea,” Andrew told MLive.com. “It tasted great. If I was blindfolded, I wouldn’t know if it was a pothole or a bowl.”
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Italian chef Fabio Picchi has offered three American exchange students in Florence a four-hour cooking lesson after the women tried to cook pasta in a pot without water on Mar. 18. The pasta burst into flames within minutes, and firefighters were summoned to put out the fire. “We thought it was cooked like that,” one of the students told La Nazione. “They will have lunch in our restaurant with two of my extraordinary cooks,” Picchi said. “I think this can be useful to them, but also to us. Understanding is always ... what is beautiful and necessary.”
WEIRD POWER In Didcot, England, known as the country’s “most normal town,” one resident creatively tried to change people’s perceptions with additions to road signs along local highway A4130. The prankster added destinations such as Narnia, Gotham City, Middle Earth, Emerald City and Neverland to roundabout signs, telling the BBC (on condition of anonymity): “To me there’s nowhere that is normal, there’s no such thing.” He said he’s been making “creative interventions” all over the country for about 20 years. The Oxfordshire County Council responded that while the additions were “amusing,” they’ll be removed as soon as the county’s potholes are fixed.
ANGER MANAGEMENT Maghan LeGlue, 25, of Bridge City, Louisiana, shifted her rage into high gear on March 24 when she used her 2004 Ford Expedition to pin her 27-year-old boyfriend up against his Ford Crown Victoria, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The Times-Picayune reported that the couple, who have three children together, had been arguing when LeGlue hit him, shattering his leg. Doctors performed emergency surgery on the victim. LeGlue was taken into custody and was held without bond. ■

h brah: It was a real tough winter on the mainland, so to relieve
the tension I invited a couple to get married here on Maui. It was a great break for them, as I booked a sailing trip for us all for an ad-hoc reception. We set out to sea, though the ever-iffy weather started to rise to a steady blow with six-foot waves on the bows. The crew handled it perfectly. But as the trip became a bit of a “question mark,” you two unattended teenagers decided to make an event on video–of one of them jumping overboard! The crew responded with precision and you were retrieved–with your dumb video somehow intact. The crew risked their lives helping you, the epitome of youth gone bad. Be thankful they knew what they were doing! ■

HOW MAUI ARTISTS ARE REINVENTING THE FUTURE OF RUBBISH IN THE HEART OF WAILUKU By Lantana Hoke

drum kit made out of a tire and decorated with beer bottle caps. A camel with golf club feet. A miniature parasol made from Salem cigarette packets. Strings of bottle caps formed to look like lei hulu, the feather lei. The artwork is diverse at the new Art of Trash exhibit in Wailuku. It’s alternately serious and playful, sculptural or painting-like, functional or abstract, but what it all has in common that it’s made from what would otherwise be considered junk. The “reused, recycled, reinvented” materials used by the artists ranges from plastic gathered from the sea to old light fixtures to discarded rubber slippers, and it comes together in an exhibit that’s equal parts pointed and whimsical. A three-week, juried art exhibition

based around Earth Day, the Art of Trash show features creations made by Maui artists entirely from garbage. The Art of Trash is presented by Malama Maui Nui and Sharing Aloha, and the annual project has been going on for over a decade. The idea behind the exhibit is to shed light on our ongoing waste problem and investigate creative ways to keep everyday items out of the landfill. This year, for the first time, the exhibit is in Wailuku town; the gallery is on Main Street, next to Native Intelligence. The exhibit will run through Apr. 28 from 10am-5pm. Despite the heavy rain and the cancellation of Wailuku First Friday, the exhibit opened last Friday night and still had a good turn out in spite of the puddles dotting Wailuku town. With the Merrie Monarch Festival live streaming on a lap-
top at the entrance, a large contingency of Malama Maui Nui and Sharing Aloha employees and board members mingled with the damp crowd to explain and explore the art. Workers were wearing some of the wearable trash art, like hats and dresses crafted from plastic, and there were $10 recycled screen-printed t-shirts for sale. “It’s different every year; it just keeps getting better and better,” said Susy, who is on the board of Sharing Aloha, when I went to check out the exhibit on opening night. “We’ve been at Maui Mall forever, so it’s our first time in Wailuku,” said Gabriella, who works at Malama Maui Nui. “We’re stoked on that!” Despite the rain, they still had a good turnout. “The artists are so creative and talented. It’s such a great event. Wonderful
people submit work, great people come and get inspired and then they want to contribute next year,” said Susy. For the second year in a row, the show was juried by Judy Bruder, who hung the exhibit alongside Rob Spencer. “It’s a joy for me to get to do it,” said Bruder. “I’m honored that I’ve gotten to jury it twice. I’m always very impressed with what people use within their pieces.” According to Bruder, artist Ira Ono started Art of Trash more than a decade ago. “Some people think of this kind of art as really trash put together, and not fine art, but I have a real love for outsider art, which is art that is outside of the regular format with certain guidelines that aren’t adhered to,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be critically correct. costume designer for film and television series, and has designed for productions like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lone Ranger and Key & Peele. Koerber’s mother Fair has her own piece, Love Bomb , on display. Bruder also spoke enthusiastically about Fair’s work: “Deybra’s one of the artists on Maui that’s really on the forefront of recycling. She’s been doing it for years and years. It’s a pretty unique ability to be able to look at what other people consider to be junk, crap, and to see something within it that you can create something shining out of it.” For Koerber’s piece, titled Ali‘i of the Sea, “my mother and I took a trip to the harbor to collect sea garbage,” said Koerber. “I found so many amazingly colorful marine ropes washed up on the rocks,” which she wove into the piece. Her work is a “Mohawk headdress, resembling an Ali‘i helmet with old paintbrushes from my mother’s studio, an ode to her influence and guidance,” Koerber said. “When I’m home again I’ll make a costume to go with the wig.” In the headpiece, old paintbrushes stiffened with dried paint splay out from a bed of fish nets. “When I’m home in the islands I love creating whimsical pieces for the joy of it,” said Koerber. Last year, she did a series of haku leis every day for the month of May. You can check out her art on her Instagram, @Maidenmelody Another artist, Tim Gunter, has been contributing pieces to the Art of Trash for ten years. “It’s unbelievable what that man does,” said Bruder. “I’m glad you appreciate my sense of humor,” said Gunter, whose friends call him Gunner, when I told him I loved his work. Gunter owns Gunter Consulting and Maui Organic Compost, through which he works with compost sites all over Maui. “I help people grow anything in any area,” he said. Gunter’s numerous pieces at the exhibit range over a variety of whimsical themes, with steampunk vibes and a liberal dose of humor. One of his pieces on display, Little Sinker, is a three-toed old sink-man sticking out his rubber slipper tongue with an old brush for hair.
Now is a particularly good time to consider trash. As zero-waste and lowerwaste efforts around the island gain momentum and the styrofoam ban goes into effect, more and more people are gaining awareness of the effects and impact of our convenience-based lifestyle of single-use items that will be used for 10 minutes and then thrown out, to exist forever in the landfill. But when pointing out a big, depressing problem, it’s important to point to a solution. The Art of Trash does not purport to solve this problem; it’s not that all of our trash can suddenly become useful or beautiful art. Rather, it points out the ingenuity of people in the face
of solving complex problems without easy solutions. It shows that with effort and creativity, we can create something good out of something daunting and terrible. The Art of Trash creates awareness and interest about trash and its implications, as well as hope for other creative solutions through the ingenuity of human activity. “It takes trash out of the dump and puts it whimsically in front of your eyes,” said Bruder. “Frightening, charming, beautiful, ugly, wonderful–you are aware of it, you are aware of it as trash, that it is a way bigger problem than this. It’s about confronting an issue, and one way of confronting a really heavy issue is to put it in front of people in a palliative way, so we can ask, what about all these plastic forks? Do we really need a straw with every drink? The art brings up real conversations that can and should go on.” After checking out the exhibit with my friend Melekai, we headed to Wai Bar to talk and have a drink. The straws, we couldn’t help but notice, were made from paper. There, we met a young man named Ryan, someone we swore we knew from somewhere–a Maui boy and music aficionado. The conversation roamed from spiritual vampires to the protective properties of black labradorite, as conversations often do in Wailuku, but one thing our new friend said gave me pause, and made me think about the art exhibit in a new light. “We have to give up all hope of having a better past,” he said. It struck me that that’s what the Art of Trash is saying, too: We can’t keep just lamenting our poor behaviors and decisions about waste creation and management. Right now, it’s not too late to create something good out of the trash. The Art of Trash shows us a way to start.
The Art of Trash runs through April 28. The gallery is at 1980 Main St., Wailuku. The exhibit is open 10am-5pm. For more information, call 808-877-2524. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/newsD

form of outsider art–trash, or recycled goods–has become very important. What people are creating out of trash–and God knows there is so much trash–it has been very interesting.” Another unique thing about this exhibit Bruder points to is the accessibility of it to everyday folks who might be challenged or intimidated by high or fine art. “The thing about a show like this is it’s a really good draw for all kinds of people,” she said. “It isn’t what some people might consider ‘high art,’ and so it’s okay to just look at it and be delighted by it. You don’t have an art background to appreciate it, and it appeals to everybody–kids and adults.” Bruder also speaks to the underlying message of the exhibit: our trash problem, and what we’re going to do about it. “I think it behooves all of us to look at what we have considered to be trash, disposable, as something other than that, because we can’t keep doing that, there’s no room anymore,” Bruder said. “That should enlighten us to some degree about what we should use, and what we’re going to do with it when we’re done.” Bruder would like to see the idea grow in the community. “If it could be at community centers, for groups or individuals to create pieces, I think it could be an incredible way to supplement the arts programs on this island that are almost non-existent, except for those schools that can still provide,” she said. Bruder pointed out that in the art, “you can always find something in it that is uniquely Hawaii, such as Primo bottle caps. It’s quite amazing what can become of trash. You look at the show and it’s very uplifting. These are the people who think about trash out of the bag and come up with something provocative that causes us to question what it is and what are we going to do about it. It’s very exciting to me, to see the creative force that is so important in this world.” Melody Koerber is one of the artists with that creative force with work on display at the exhibit. Koerber grew up on Maui, and her artist mother Deybra Fair was an inspiration to her. “I grew up amidst her flurry of daily creativity,” says Koerber. Koerber currently works as a
“I looked at the sink and decided it needed legs,” Gunter said. “Well, if it has legs, I might as well give it some arms. Now that it has limbs, it should have eyes and a mouth. I first made a blueprint, and then I realized I cut the pieces too short so I changed the blueprint.” Repurposing what other people might consider trash is a bit of a theme to Gunter. “I have never considered myself an artist,” he said. Rather, recycling and reusing old objects is a lifestyle. His home and yard are full of offbeat, repurposed items most people would throw into the landfill–an old motorcycle turned into a planter, a sculpture of a man playing a broken guitar among the trees and geckos and elephants made out of landfill-fodder. “I make maybe a piece a week after work or in the evening,” said Gunter. “I don’t really work to hard at it. It’s just fun, like reading a book or gardening.” Megan Koeberler is another artist with abundant, inventive pieces on display, many of which share a marine theme and have a more poignant feeling than Gunther’s work. One work, Mahi Mahi, Plastic Plastic–You Are What You Eat, forms the silhouette of a mahi mahi, its high-domed forehead crafted from nurdles of plastic sea trash. Then there’s the almost-realist piece Don’t Get Stung, in which iridescent jellyfish made from plastic bags hang from a display, a sad tribute to the sea creatures harmed by human waste.

Shhhhhhhh! ‘A Quiet Place’ is a masterpiece of suspense ★★★★★
T
he introductory scenes of A Quiet Place allow the audience to enter a world so intriguing that many will find themselves obeying the film’s core rule to remain silent. The film opens on “Day 89” of a world where humankind appears to have either gone missing or become mostly extinct. As a man (played by John Krasinski, who also directed the film), his wife (Emily Blunt) and their three children (Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and Cade Woodward) walk from a deserted town to their house in the woods, they’re careful to only step barefoot and not utter a sound. Why? Because of a monster that might appear and turn their silence into screams. Later, the father gravely reminds his son, “Small noises are okay... big noises bring danger.” While A Quiet Place is so much more than just a horror movie, it excels as an outstanding example of the genre. Suspense is effectively created in most films by the absence of sound; here, since every scene (even those where no threat seems to exist) hinges on how quiet this family

can be, Krasinski continuously keeps his audience on edge. In an age of notoriously obnoxious, chatty moviegoers, Krasinski has made a movie that strongly encourages (if not altogether requires) audiences to shut the hell up. There are bits that reminded me of Aliens and 10 Cloverfield Way, as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village and Signs but, appropriately enough, it’s the family dynamic that provides the most dramatic power. There hasn’t been an extensive use of American Sign Language in a mainstream American film since Children of a Lesser God. In fact, there is very little spoken dialogue, as the majority of exchanges are delivered in ASL and presented in subtitles. The back and forth between the children and their parents are refreshing, emotionally rich and moving. The key to Krasinski’s success as an actor has always been his eyes: his droll, hilarious close-ups as Jim Halpert on The Office would have worked in silent comedies. Here, he says little but his expressions capture the paternal love and barely concealed desperation of his character. Blunt is excellent and carries some of the film’s most grueling scenes. Jupe is touching in his shared scenes with
Quiet on the set!
Krasinski, in which a boy struggles to control his fear in front of his father. But Simmonds’ performance and character provide the film with its heart. Simmonds, who is deaf in real life, conveys a daughter who fears she has forever lost the bond she shared with her father; the emotions and character dynamics between the parents and their children feel authentic and complex. Everything about this production is outstanding, though the sound design is especially remarkable. The only thing in the entire movie that I didn’t like was seeing Michael Bay’s name in the ending credits: yes, the bombastic cinematic ringleader of “Bay-hem’ is the film’s ex-
ecutive producer. This and Ouija: Origin of Evil are the only great films to come from Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company to date. Bay is very lucky to have his name attached to a film this strong. Krasinski’s third film as a director never steps wrong. Fans who’ve noted his impressive dramatic work in films like Promised Land and 15 Hours will, nonetheless, be startled by what he achieves here, in front of and behind the camera. When you consider the unique demands the filmmakers faced (a horror tale blended with a family drama, presented mostly in ASL, via a tour de force sound design), it makes the end result all the more extraordinary. Krasinski has fashioned a masterpiece. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Has spring fever hit you yet? Probably, but have you really had a chance to satisfy it? This week is a good one to do exactly that–get all your buttons pushed in all the right ways. Don’t let recent disappointments hold you back from being as adventurous and wild as you’ve ever been, because caution and restraint right now would keep you from truly experiencing one of the most exciting and inspiring weeks this season. Besides, although it’s good to have prudence and moderation as skills in reserve, by and large they don’t suit you Rams, who are supposed to be the wild kids of the zodiac. Sometimes it’s good to contradict that stereotype–but this week we’d rather you lived up to it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Some musicians or albums stay in my rotation for a month or a year; others I never tire of. Taureans, in general, are drawn to art, music, and people who are with them for the long haul, rather than conforming to a specific, ephemeral mood. Sometimes, however, it’s confusing to determine which is which, when you’re in the moment. This week, step back and examine the people you’re tight with right now. Are they friends who are here today, but may be gone tomorrow, or are they likely to be in your life decades from now? What you do with that information is up to you; I just think it’s important that you have it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
It doesn’t matter if the odds are against you. Imagine you’re on a game show, being presented with a bag full of keys. If you choose the one that’ll start the brand new car, it’s yours. Sure, odds are you’re going to take the bus home, but there’s always that slim chance, which ought to be enough to get your heart pounding. Look for threads of hope this week, no matter how slender. Ignore the depressing abundance of more likely disappointment, and let those slim positive prospects motivate you; they’re your lifelines to the next chapter. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Your reputation for being high-maintenance, while not entirely unjustified, is definitely unreasonably inflated; it’s based on a few isolated incidents, rather than taking into account the many times you were actually pretty chill in situations that would mess with almost anyone’s psychological equilibrium. Unfortunately, there’s usually not much you can do to change the impression that you’re needy or emotionally fragile, once someone’s decided you are. Fortunately, this week is a rare chance to do exactly that, by keeping your cool when everyone else loses their heads, and coming up with the kinds of solutions others are too stressed out to think of.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Sometimes when someone’s exceptionally talented in some way, others regard them as owing something to the world. It’d be a crime, to deprive everyone of such beauty and brilliance. Forgive people for making demands of you. It’s an expression of admiration and love, so find a way to fulfill their desires and make yourself happy. However, also remember that your own well-being ultimately has to come first. It’s all about finding that balance between what you need and what others want. You’re supposed to be good at that. This week, prove you are.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
There are times to vociferously resist and question authority–especially these days. In general, I wish you would do it even more often than you already do. Once in a while, though, someone with power tries to do something right. That’s actually likely this week against all odds. Even though you may not like their methods or timing, arguing with them would mostly be selfish. No one’s asking you to help or support people who don’t have exactly your agenda. However, if their intentions are good and likely to at least partially succeed, it’d be mighty nice of you to simply get out of their way. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
You’re smarter than you look. You also often talk and act as if you’re less intelligent than you really are. This odd habit actually feeds directly into one of your greatest talents: being able to talk to anyone from any walk of life. Anyone who takes the time to get to know you figures out that there’s a keen mind lurking under your casually unpretentious exterior. But what about those who don’t get to know you? Especially those who might be in a position to influence your life (deny you a job, for instance)? Sometimes, the superficial details matter, and dressing up (rather than down) is your only chance to make a good impression. This week, what you wear (or something equally trivial) might, unfortunately, count for more than who you are.
VOTED BEST
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Some people never grow up. It can be charming, like an Aries’ perpetual childlike ability to play. It’s less appealing when someone doesn’t take responsibility for their actions, especially those that affect you negatively. You have two basic options when that happens: School them and try to get them to clean up their own messes, or let it go and walk away. Most of the time I hope you do your best to fix the situation by correcting their behavior; it’s your right not to have your metaphorical toes stepped on, after all. This week, however, nothing you can say or do is likely to have any positive impact on the situation (in fact, it’ll only aggravate it, or you), so I’d advise the latter course: breathe deep, shake it off, and walk away.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Don’t be too swayed by your preconceived conceptions. Sometimes you get too attached to a certain idea: what your ideal job, friend, neighborhood or lover should look like, for example. While in pursuit of that ideal, you let perfectly desirable scenarios (some even better than what you imagined) pass you by. The truth is, your ideal might be unattainable, or it might not even exist, which means you’ll never be content– unless you become a little more open-minded and flexible. Allow yourself to be open to surprises, and you might find they’re almost all pleasant ones.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
You require a lot of stimulus to keep your sharp mind active and engaged. There are many situations you could potentially find tedious, and even if you temporarily stave off the boredom with a book, cell phone, or ipod, eventually it will catch up to you–especially this week. Therefore, take a cue from your astrological neighbor, Pisces. I’ve never met a bored Piscean; they find ways to be interested and entertained by even the dullest situations. I’m still not entirely sure how they do it; either they’re mildly autistic, or enlightened (or both). But I’m certain you could learn something from them, and should.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
One of my best Virgo friends was recently joking about her largely fruitless efforts to rein in a Pisces friend and make him conform to her responsible, scheduled, and slightly anal ways. Of course our conversation was all in good fun, but I have seen well-intentioned, misguided Virgos try to compel others to be more like they are. While I won’t argue that we’d all benefit from borrowing some of your efficiency and pragmatism, I can explain why most of us won’t bother: we can’t. We’re simply not wired the way you are. It’s almost like a superpower, the way you excel at getting shit done. Forgive us our failings, Virgo, and remember: this is why we need you.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
You Fish have a very loose, fluid relationship with time. Sometimes that works in your favor; mostly, though, it means you lose track of it. You’re on the beach staring out over the water for just a few seconds; then you look down and notice you’re buried up to your knees in wave-carried sand. I’ve learned to interpret that a Piscean “be there in five minutes” usually means 20 or 30. I’m mostly okay with that, now that I know. Like me, most people will have no problem cutting you a little slack in this department; all you need do is give them a clue that it’s necessary.
