sexual harassment and assault allegations against the late U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye make clear (the original charges, which the news media never adequately reported on, date to the early 1990s), sexual harassment and assault are nothing new. What is new is that we live in a time when people–especially women–are tired of being quiet about it. “This change did not come by pressure from within,” Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women Executive Director Khara JabolaCarolus said on Twitter not long after Saiki’s announcement.

STORY OF HAWAI‘I MUSEUM GETS TRAVEL CHANNEL LOVE

The House

STATE HOUSE FORMS SEXUAL HARASSMENT WORKING GROUP It’s amazing, I know, but there’s actually been some good news to come out of the state Legislature regarding sexual harassment. The Speaker Emeritus Joe Souki investigation, and his subsequent resignation, has somehow prompted the state House of Representatives to make a concrete change in how they handle sexual harassment complaints in the future. “House Speaker Scott K. Saiki today announced the formation of an Interim Working Group to Evaluate House Procedures on Disruptive Behavior,” states a May 9 press release sent out by the legislative press office. “The advisory group will evaluate current House procedures relating to reporting, investigating and eliminating inappropriate harassment behavior.” The news release also quotes Saiki himself: “This working group is comprised of experts who will recommend improvements to the House’s workplace standards and procedures,” Saiki said. “We are taking this initiative to ensure that the House maintains a safe and productive working environment for all employees and visitors.” The working group consists of the following individuals: Janna Nakagawa, the Executive Vice President, Chief Governance and Corporate Services Officer for Hawaii Medical Services Association (HMSA); Ryan Sanada, the Director of Legal and Government Affairs for the Hawai‘i Employers Council; and Robin Wurtzel, the Chief Counsel for the Hawai‘i Civil Rights Commission (Brian L. Takeshita, the House Chief Clerk, will also a member of the group, but only in

an advisory capacity). The fact that two of the three official members of the group are women is promising. That an attorney like Wurtzel is a member is especially good. In fact, Wurtzel is quoted extensively in a February 2018 Hawaii Business article on sexual harassment here in Hawai‘i. “Nobody thinks it’s OK, but somehow people are doing it,” Wurtzel says in the article. “I think employees get their cues from managers and from presidents, CEOs, vice presidents, whoever is above them. And I think having an appropriate workplace is the best example, and for people to stand up and say, ‘That’s really not appropriate.’ Or, ‘That makes me uncomfortable.’ Or, ‘You know, you really shouldn’t tell jokes like that.’ Or, ‘You shouldn’t say things like that.’” One more thing: though it will undoubtedly take a while for the House to settle on new rules and standards of conduct that make it easier for victims of sexual harassment to get justice, there’s no doubt that the House is taking these steps because of pressure from the public. As Civil Beat’s recent re-reporting of

The Story of Hawai‘i Museum at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center is getting some big publicity this month. On Thursday, May 17, the Travel Channel show Mysteries at the Museum will air a segment on the museum’s new steel guitar exhibit (which we wrote about it our April 4, 2018 story “Kika Kila”). “I’m part of the narration in this segment,” museum owner Bryant Neal told me. “It features the Hawaiian Steel Guitar and how it led to the creation of the ‘pick up’ which electrified the guitar. The artifact is an original Rickenbacker Frying Pan steel guitar which is featured in the museum exhibit.” That episode is scheduled to air at 9pm EST (check local listings to make sure of time here in Hawai‘i). The museum will also appear on the show at 10pm EST (again, confirm with local listings) on Thursday, May 31 for a segment titled “Fire in Paradise,” dealing with the fire that ravaged Honolulu’s Chinatown in 1900. That fire, which had started from a controlled blaze meant to clear plague-contaminated areas of the city, ended up burning for 17 days. It destroyed 4,000 homes, owned mostly by Chinese and Japanese residents. “This segment has their own narrator but we have the artifact, which is a vintage fire hose nozzle from Chinatown from the time of the Great Fire of Honolulu,” said Neal.

Overheard “There are too many stupid people around here... I wish someone would collect them all up and take them off to an island somewhere.”

In each episode of Mysteries at the Museum, host Don Wildman examines particular relics and artifacts at various museums around the world. “He examines each artifact to illuminate the hidden treasures at the heart of history’s most incredible triumphs, sensational crimes and bizarre encounters,” states the Travel Channel’s website on the show. “Through compelling interviews, rare archival footage and arresting recreations, Don pursues extraordinary tales of intrigue and wonder.” And on a personal note, the Story of Hawai‘i Museum also has a new exhibit from yours truly. Because I’ll be leaving Hawai‘i soon, I’ve decided to donate a 1:250 scale model of the battleship USS Arizona to the museum. The model is made entirely from paper. A friend gave me the “kit” (PDF plans that I printed on cardstock and then painstakingly cut out using X-Acto knives) and it took me a few months to build. It’s impossible to transport the model anywhere except across town because it’s in credibly delicate, and since it’s just been sitting on a shelf at home for the last five years, I’ve decided that it would be better if it’s on display in the museum’s World War II exhibit.

I’M OUT, AGAIN Which brings me to the fact that this week marks my final week as Editor of MauiTime. My second stint as Editor, which began in mid-June, 2011, has gone by far too fast. Each week I’m amazed at the consistently high-quality work the paper’s tiny staff puts out. It’s sad that MauiTime is the last alternative newsweekly left in Hawai‘i, but the paper’s commitment to strong journalism and solid writing has never been stronger. Axel Beers, who has written for the paper many times as a freelancer, will take over as Editor. He’s a sharp writer and a great reporter. His news instincts are strong, and he grew up reading MauiTime (a fact that both makes me feel old and fills me with pride), which means he understands and respects the paper’s voice. I have no doubt that he’ll do a great job. As for me, I’m headed back to the life of a reporter in Southern California. It’s where I first began my journalism career 22 years ago. I know it’s a tough time to work as a freelancer (far too many of my friends and former colleagues, many with more talent and experience than I have, are in the same situation) but times are tough for many people these days. Good journalism is needed everywhere, and I’m more than happy to provide that service in California. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

News Of The Weird CROCKPOT SEX PARTY In the tony Denver suburb of Castle Rock, Colorado, the motto might be “If the house is rockin’, DO come knockin’!” Residents on Avery Way are in a tizzy about the Thunderstorm Play Palace, a 7,500-square-foot home where, neighbors told KDVR-TV, the owner invites swinging couples and singles to gather for wild sex parties. Invitees must make a “donation” ($70 for couples and single men, $20 for single women), and the parties include drinks, snacks and potluck dishes. “One had four crockpots,” said a neighbor, “showing up like they’re going to a Bunko party or something.” On the invitation, guests were asked to bring their own condoms and show respect for the “new furniture.” The host is a married father of three who feels harassed by the neighborhood, but he counters that he’s taken steps to be discreet, including installing soundproofing and making sure “there are no open areas.” But neighbors claim they hear “disturbing sounds” coming from the house. “You can hear people doing what they’re doing,” one resident told reporters. Castle Rock Police say the man is not breaking the law because he’s only taking donations, and the activities are contained to his home.

Police officers in the German town of Neustadt were called April 25 to an apartment building after reports of screaming led neighbors to suspect domestic violence, the Daily Mail reported. Instead, they found a couple receiving instruction in the Japanese art of Shibari erotic bondage from the apartment’s tenant. (“Shibari” translates as “the beauty of tight binding.”) In a statement titled “Fifty Shades of Neustadt,” police reported the couple were “well and in a good mood,” even asking the officers if they’d like to join in, but they had to decline.

Dolores Leis, 64, of Nanton in Galicia, Spain, is a modest wife and potato farmer. But thanks to the internet, she has found fame as “Trump’s Galician sister.” The Associated Press reports that a journalist researching farming posted a photo of Leis at her farm on Instagram, and the striking resemblance between her and the U.S. president caught the attention of the web. “I say that it must be because of the color of the hair,” Leis told La Voz de Galicia on April 24. She added that she’s not overwhelmed by the sudden attention because, unlike her doppelganger, she doesn’t use a mobile phone and isn’t much interested in online chatter. “I look at everything that my daughters show me, but it never stung my curiosity to have (a phone),” she said.

MISGUIDED Greyhound Bus passengers were frustrated on April 19 after their trip to New York was delayed by mechanical trouble and navigational challenges. The ride started in Cleveland, where the scheduled departure time was 2:30am, passengers told WEWS-TV, but the

bus didn’t leave until 6am. After crossing into Pennsylvania, the bus turned around, and the driver explained he was returning to Cleveland because of mechanical difficulties. However, the driver missed Cleveland and drove all the way to Toledo before realizing the mistake and heading back to Cleveland. “We were on this bus for seven hours just going in a circle,” said passenger Morgan Staley.

BATHING NEWS Evelyn Washington, 29, broke then crawled through a window in a Monroe, Louisiana, home on April 17, then settled into a warm bath with a bag of Cheetos and a large plate of food within reach on the toilet lid. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that when the homeowner returned from work around 5pm, she called police, who removed Washington to the Ouachita Correctional Center, where she told them “an unknown male told her to break into the victims’ residence.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME? A Planet Fitness customer in Saginaw Township, Michigan, was alarmed April 15 to find a Wi-Fi network named “remote detonator” while searching for an available connection. The gym manager evacuated the building and called police, who brought in a bombsniffing dog and declared the facility safe after a three-hour shutdown. Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl told MLive. com that people often choose odd names for their Wi-Fi networks, adding that one on his own street is called “FBI surveillance van.”

CRIME REPORT In October 1981, Stephen Michael Paris escaped from the Jess Dunn Correctional Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where he had been serving a nine-year sentence for drug possession and distribution. Using the name Stephen Chavez, Paris managed to evade authorities until April 12, when investigators tracked him down, thanks to his mother’s obituary, at an office in Houston where he was working. Now 58 years old, Paris was mentioned in his mother’s tribute, using his alias, the Associated Press reported, and after confirming his identity with fingerprints, the U.S. Marshals Service returned him to custody.

NEW WORLD ORDER Jaywalkers, beware: The city of Daye, in Hubei province China, has installed water sprayers and an electronic screen at a crosswalk to stop people from crossing on a red light. Five pylons were placed along the road April 16, China Daily reported, three of which identify offenders using sensors and then spray them with water vapor. Other pylons “photograph people crossing against red lights,” explained Wan Xinqiang of the Daye public security bureau, and “a large electronic screen at the intersection will instantly display their photos... If the equipment works well, we will utilize it throughout the city.” ■

While you were out for a swim, your dogs barked so much they disrupted a couple’s wedding vows. After you got out of the water, a lady pointed out the error of your ways. She was calm and respectful, but you weren’t. You cursed, called her disgusting names and gestured with your middle finger. How dare you! What gave you the right to disrespect others who were just trying to enjoy the same public beach that you were visiting? This island doesn’t belong to you, brah. THE WAY THINGS

EVOLVE Talking affordable housing, seawalls and sustainable ag with Albert Perez, three years after he took over Maui Tomorrow

By Anthony Pignataro

T

Q: A:

hree years ago this month Albert Perez took over as Executive Director of the Maui Tomorrow Foundation. He helped found the organization in 1989, stayed a few years, then moved to the mainland, where he spent much of his time until 2015. I chatted with Perez not long after he took over Maui Tomorrow, and since then have seen him around the county doing the grunt work of a smart growth activist. He’s testified at Land Use Commission hearings, observed contentious Maui County Council meetings and checked out the January demonstration at the Kalana O Maui Building over the rights of kanaka maoli to speak Hawaiian in court. I thought this week was a good time to catch up on what’s been accomplished, and what still needs to be done. He’s in Lake Tahoe right now, so we spoke by phone.

The first year I was here we did a lot of work in anticipation of the closure of HC&S [Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar]. I didn’t see how they could sustain such losses. We produced the Malama ‘Aina report. It’s clear that chemical agriculture is a losing prospect here. You have to ship in all the pesticides, and making a profit is very difficult. But in regenerative agriculture, you’re not paying for pesticides. You’re making your fertilizer on site. That remains a big focus, which leads into a discussion of the whole water situation.

Q: A:

It’s pretty clear to me and to Maui Tomorrow as a whole that A&B is not in agriculture anymore. We saw that when [A&B President] Chris Benjamin said not to expect a profit in agriculture. This is consistent

Thanks for chatting with us. Has the time passed quickly for you these last three years? I would say it’s gone by fairly quickly. That happens when you’re busy.

with the business model. They hold the agricultural land (and get low tax rates), and steward the land until they want to develop it. Their focus is on commercial development. They don’t do more affordable housing than they have to. And they use their connections to change its land designation to urban use. In this planning and entitlement process, they have a lot of experience that’s an asset to the company. This is a long-term strategy for them. Sugar was losing too much money, so they had to pull the plug. But they say they’re serious about agriculture, and that’s how they keep the water.

Q: A:

What about the notion that Upcountry won’t have any water without A&B?

The main thing people need to recognize is that Upcountry water is not at risk. It’s not a choice of giving water back to East Maui or to Upcountry–that is false. The real risk is A&B not giving water back to the County of Maui. The real risk is that our water system is dependent on a private

entity and we’d like to see that changed. It’s poor public policy to have a public water system dependent on a private water company.

Q: A: Q: A: Q: A: Q:

How do you change that? We’d like to see it managed by a nonprofit. So we’re exploring options. Such as? We’re investigating how things are done elsewhere. It’s what we do. Are you optimistic about being able to change things like that? Absolutely. Yes. We have to be. A&B could change its mind at any time. Did I talk about the landslide? No.

Oh. What if A&B is acquired by another company that’s not interested in supplying the county with water? Then what? Or, what if there’s a landslide and A&B feels it’s too expensive to fix the damage that’s done? That would not be good.

A:

Q: A:

Why do you think this situation was allowed to develop this way?

I think we just kind of get used to the way things evolve. People were talking about the possible demise of sugar for a long, long time. Then, when it happened, people were shocked. But the writing was on the wall for a long time.

Q: A:

What else are you working on?

inputs are derived from petroleum. It also kills soil bacteria. An incredible amount of carbon gets sequestered in the soil when they don’t kill the soil bacteria. What if we could make Maui a training ground? We could have sustainable agriculture here. People could come here, learn about it and then take it home? Who wouldn’t want to come to Maui to learn about climate change?

Everyone on Maui knows people who are struggling to find housing. It’s really ridiculous. I’m staying in Lake Tahoe right now, which is a resort area like Maui. I’m in a three-bedroom, and it’s $1,300 a month. It would be at least three times that on Maui.

Q: A:

We fight bad development–like 201H [fast-tracked] projects which get exceptions for everything and make a mockery of the county planning projects–but we also support good development–truly affordable housing for local people.

Not a bad idea. But let’s talk about housing now.

I’m told that back in the day, there was no workforce housing ordinance in Maui County. My understanding is that we wrote an initial draft, and then it was adopted. But when people talk about “affordable housing,” it’s not really affordable. You can make $100,000 a year and qualify for these units.

A:

Q: A: Q:

Is there anyone out there trying to help the situation?

What projects have you supported recently?

We’re working with the Hawai‘i Farmers Union United on a food hub, which is mentioned in the Malama ‘Aina report. Think of it as a big farmers market that’s permanent. Consumers can buy things there. You can get compost. There would be true farm-to-table restaurants. There’s a move now to make it happen in a couple different places.

Q: A: Q: A:

One possibility is in Haiku. And another is in Waikapu, where the Maui Tropical Plantation is, or maybe across the street from it. That’s promising.

What else is encouraging that’s going on right now?

We have been working quite cooperatively with Maui Electric. I have to give a lot of credit to Sharon Suzuki, the President of Maui Electric, and Mahina Martin, their Director of Government and Community Relations. They ask us about projects before they happen now. I’m very pleased with how our relationship with Maui Electric has gone. We did a forum on sustainable solar management at the college–now that net metering is gone. And we did a solar tour–we invited the public to see solar with battery storage, so they can get an idea as to their options.

Q: A:

What have you learned in this job?

What I didn’t know before the Malama ‘Aina report is that chemical agriculture contributes a lot to greenhouse gas production. The chemical

This reminds me of the fight over the seawalls.

Look at the shoreline of West Maui. If the Department of Transportation (DOT) had its way, they would have armored more than just Olowalu. Our beaches are disappearing, and the whole West Maui coastline is a federally designated Hawaiian monk seal habitat. They’re a critically endangered species. But I have to give a lot of credit to former DOT Director Ford Fuchigami. We filed a lawsuit [to stop seawall construction] and he was still willing to talk with us. That is unusual. That whole fight over seawalls seemed so unnecessary. Did I tell you how I measured the road? Yes? I think so, but I don’t recall the details.

At 2am one Sunday morning, I went out there with a protester, George Burnette. He and I measured the width of the pavement at various parts. We determined that they only needed to restripe the lanes. They didn’t have to build a seawall. At the current erosion rate, that gave them 19 years to figure out how to realign the road mauka. I told Ford Fuchigami that I wanted them to take seawalls off their go-to list. My understanding is that they will now do everything else first before trying to build a seawall. The seawall is their last resort.

Q: A: Q: A:

Such as?

Now, in agriculture, they’re putting into practice several things we talked about. In the Central Valley, there are windbreaks now so they can grow crops. People thought that it couldn’t be done, but it’s being done now. It was talked about in the Malama ‘Aina report, but was deemed “not practical.” We’re just going back to some old practices. It’s very encouraging.

Country Town developers behaved was the [Kihei] Mega Mall developers [who were trying to build large retail developments on land mauka of Pi‘ilani Highway that had been designated as light industrial]. After they lost the first round, they came back and tried to make a little bit of the project light industrial. But the South Maui Plan says very clearly that retail goes makai of Pi‘ilani Highway. We opposed it because we want to adhere to the will of the community.

Maui Tomorrow Executive Director Albert Perez

Right now we have a 25 percent “affordable housing” requirement [for developers]. But of that, only 30 percent of those units are truly affordable. Put another way, if there are 1,000 homes built, 250 of them have to be “affordable.” But only 75 of those will be truly affordable.

Waikapu Country Town. We supported it. We testified in front of the Land Use Commission in favor of changing the land use designation from agriculture to urban. The developers respected the will of the community. It’s how I’d like to see developers act in the future.

Q: A:

Q: A:

So what are you doing about that?

We’re working closely with [the faithbased nonprofit] FACE Maui, and we’re really pushing for housing that Maui’s local people can afford. And we’re trying to shed light on the AirBnB phenomenon, which is really a travesty.

Q:

I’m amazed how much of housing on Maui is taking up by vacation rentals.

A:

But respecting the will of the community seems lost on many.

We have been battling the current administration [of Mayor Alan Arakawa]. They see community plans as just guiding documents, rather than having the force of law. Participating in the community planning process is very time-consuming. Their work should be respected. The opposite of how the Waikapu

Q:

I can’t believe they weren’t doing that before. I mean, restriping a road has to be cheaper than building a seawall. The seawall was $3 million, and restriping cost $100,000. But I think things are changing at the DOT. I give Ford Fuchigami a lot of credit.

A: Q: A:

What else have you learned in the last three years? I realized that it’s not possible to do everything myself, or even as Maui Tomorrow.

No Talking On The Dance Floor PHOTO BY JERAD HOBAUGH & SOPHIA BILLIKOPF

I EXPERIENCE DANCE CHURCH MAUI

Deep, bassy EDM who have chosen sobriety, it’s a fascinating experience for those who associate going out dancing with going out drinking. “Most places where you are invited to dance, like a club or a bar, there’s a focus

physical, mental chatter,” Swabb said. “But by moving and breathing and getting into the movement, it can be a spiritual practice. A lot of spiritual practices involve movement. There’s a strong history of dance being utilized as spiritual practice.” If that idea doesn’t speak to you, the music probably will. The music was phenomenal, and the highlight of the experience. Swabb invites electronic dance music DJs and producers from around the world and includes local Maui DJs into the lineup. On May 5, AtYyA and Elemental Entropy took the stage under a tapestry of a dark-faced mystic presiding over a cauldron of fire, as if bending over a turntable. AtYya, also known as Tyy Clark, from British Columbia, brought layered music that was easy to dance to, with attitudes alternating from fun and playful to edgy and moody, with soft mystical lyrics spliced with deep bass. Elemental Entropy (Rigzin), a local DJ favorite, played a complimentary second set that showcased some 808 elements and mashed dubstep with grime and garage. Since the conception of Dance Church, Swabb has reinvested profits from the event into a quality sound system, with surround sound and subwoofers that help dancers feel the music on the wooden dance floor. “Another analogy is that the event itself is like a dance class,” said Swabb. “While there isn’t a lot of formal dance instruction, the instruction is simply go inside and find whatever movement that is uniquely yours and express it fully, and to really have trust in the container. Towards that end, that’s the main focus.” The event did provide some of the structure of a dance class, but the focus at Dance Church Maui wasn’t about skill. Dancing is something that all humans know how to do. I put that into my mind and got into it with my friends. After dancing for hours, we slipped out the back door and into the wet North Shore night, feeling intrigued, connected and quite sober. ■

the event, when asked, I set the intention to be open-minded, and it was helpful to have a focus. “Dancing is an amazing way to work through blockages in our body–emotional,

Set your intention

on socializing and drinking. For people who have chosen a life of sobriety, for whatever reason, it can be really important to have a container like this,” explains Swabb. You don’t have to follow a life of sobriety to attend the function, but it is required that you show up and stay sober. Last week was my first time at Dance Church. I brought my friend Jenn, who’s down for anything. It turns out that this wasn’t entirely necessary, since there was no talking allowed on the dance floor. We traded looks as we tried to get into the groove. Once the free dancing started, we posted up in the corner and tried to get into it. I surreptitiously glanced around the room to see what everyone else was doing. They were doing whatever they wanted. One woman was gliding around the room, pausing to dance with people in the crowd. Some young women with obvious dance skill were at the center of the room. Most people danced by themselves. A couple was free flowing together and a little kid twirled around on her own,

ast Saturday, I found myself dancing under black lights in a room full of silent people I didn’t know. There was a painter creating art in the front corner, a DJ spinning deep bassy music with elements of hyena and Tetris, a woman painting faces, an altar of tarot-like cards overseen by Ganesh and a room packed with people who were dancing like no one was watching. And it was at church. Maui’s residents are as varied as her climates, and there are places and spaces for all of them. Dance Church Maui, which bills itself as a “Sacred and Sober Dance Community,” is one of those island niches that speaks to certain inclinations. Since its beginning in 2011, the event has grown into a highly attended dance gathering that draws people looking for a variety of experiences. Every first and third Saturday of the month, organizers (mostly volunteers) transform the community hall at Makawao Union Church with tapestries, lighting and altars. Dancers of all ages, backgrounds and ability come together for a unique and, for many, meaningful Saturday night experience. Getting out of your comfort zone and into a new space can be, well, uncomfortable. But newcomers needn’t stress–it was a welcoming place. Dance Church is a unique space that provides an uncommon experience and is a draw for people looking for a place to do their own thing on the dance floor in a nonjudgmental space, whatever that thing is. The Church provides structure and freedom, and in many ways, it’s what you make of it. It’s a group experience as well as an individual experience. “Normally we have two DJs, and we always start with some guided movement, such as yoga, tai chi or qigong. Then we close with our closing circle,” said Mikaya Swabb, the event’s founder and organizer. “It’s also a drug and alcohol-free event.” Dancing sober is something that some people aren’t always comfortable with. In addition to providing space for people

while another child napped on a cushion at the edge of the floor. I took my cue from them, closed my eyes and tried my best to let go. The no-talking rule was actually helpful: no more strangers screaming into your ear over the music and having to pretend like you understood what they said. When I sat down with Swabb after the event, he explained the reasoning behind the silence rule. “There’s no talking on the dance floor, and the reason for that is we want to honor the dance floor as a sacred space, so the idea is to come into that space with a sense of reverence, and to work on one’s own spiritual growth through movement,” he said. Non-verbal communication is allowed, including dancing together if participants choose. Although it’s at a church, you don’t have to be religious or spiritual to go. Swabb explained that the experience is subjective. “The motivation of the dancers is up to the dancer, but the invitation is there for people to set the intention at the beginning of the event and then to dance it out,” he said. 9 Sequels and a Rip-Off 2018 Summer Movie Preview

Jurassic World: Forbidden Kingdom (Opens June 22nd)

Solo: A Star Wars Story

L

et’s talk box office. The amount of money a movie makes doesn’t always mean the film is good (case in point, the wretched $300 million-grossing Suicide Squad). Summer movies tend to draw more attention to their typically massive opening weekend gross than their quality. On occasion, the movies are as good as the money we invest in them. Other times, we feed sucker money to a limp product that didn’t deserve our patronage. Either way, it’s fun predicting the films that will hit the hardest. It’s also easy to go wrong. I pride myself on declaring in this newspaper that Jurassic World would be the biggest hit of the summer of 2015. I was right but it was an easy guess. On the other hand, I’ve been really wrong before. In fact, I’m reminded monthly on the NERDWatch podcast that I predicted the 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy would flop (starring the guy from Parks and Recreation and a talking raccoon? Sounded dumb to me). I also predicted The Mask would top Forrest Gump (wrong!), placed my 1990 chips on Die Hard 2 and not Ghost (wrong!) and expected big earnings and audience adoration from Tomorrowland, Terminator: Salvation and Waterworld (Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!). Here’s my list of 10 summer flicks I can’t wait to see and how I think they’ll rank in terms of monetary success.

Deadpool 2 (opens May 18th)

20 MAY 17, 2018

The Gist: A young, cocky, “scruffylooking” scoundrel meets a Wookie... Why It Could Rock: A buddy duo that can’t miss and the unbeatable force of a Star Wars movie in the summertime. The last time Ron Howard directed a Lucasfilm product, it was Willow. Unless: Audiences refuse to correctly pronounce star Alden Ehrenreich’s name because his make-or-break lead turn doesn’t land. The troubled production created controversy, not always a good sign. Predicted Box Office Ranking: #1: summer’s top dog... er, Wookie.

Ocean’s 8 (Opens June 8th) The Gist: An all-female, Danny Ocean-spinoff starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett. Why It Could Rock: This is the only summer movie with built-in female appeal (aside from that wretched ABBA sequel). The cast is dynamite and the novelty of a gender-reversed heist comedy has great possibilities. Unless: This plays exactly like the Melissa McCarthy Ghostbusters bust. Even if it throws Ocean’s fans a bone with a George Clooney cameo, some may wish they were watching Ocean’s 14 instead. Predicted Box Office Ranking: #7: respectable but no Oceans 9-10, either.

Incredibles II (Opens June 15th) The Gist: Nineteen years later, the only Pixar movie that needed a sequel belatedly gets one. Why It Could Rock: The original is a Pixar milestone and the characters hold enormous possibilities. This is the biggest family movie event of the summer. Anticipation has been building steadily since 2004. Unless: It plays like every other Pixar sequel that doesn’t have the words Toy Story in the title. Finding Dory looked like it couldn’t miss, either. Predicted Box Office Ranking: #3

Sicario: Day of Soldado (Opens June 29th) The Gist: Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin return and shoot more drug dealers. Why It Could Rock: Once again written by Taylor Sheridan, it offers a return of the first film’s most arresting characters. The most grown-up of the summer movie sequels. Unless: Emily Blunt and Denis Villeneuve are sorely missed. For all it’s critical acclaim, Sicario had a small audience and was hardly crying out for a sequel. Predicted Box Office Gross: #10 but enough to get a part 3 rolling.

Ant-Man and the WASP (Opens July 4th) The Gist: Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly team up again and get small. Why It Could Rock: The lighthearted action will provide a nice contrast to the gloom and doom of Avengers: Infinity War. Spending the 4th of July with teenyweeny Rudd sounds fun. Unless: Comic book movie fatigue finally kicks in... which is doubtful. Will this seem too lightweight and insubstantial after the epic wrap-up of Avengers: Infinity War? Predicted Box Office Ranking: #9: ant-

Skyscraper (Opens July 13th) The Gist: Dwayne Johnson stars in a PG13 Die Hard/The Towering Inferno rip-off. Why It Could Rock: Well, for starters, it stars The Rock! Add dizzying CGI, Johnson’s 100-proof magnetism, a criticproof premise and a family-friendly take on John McLane crowd-pleaser. Unless: Audiences who let Johnson get away with Rampage don’t fall for another good-looking bad movie. Can Johnson still please hardcore action fans and his newfound Jumanji family audience? Predicted Box Office Gross: #6: The Rock’s career is still cooking, even if the movie smells.

Mission: Impossible-Fallout (Opens July 27th) The Gist: The sixth adventure for Ethan Hunt... and the team that follows him around. Why It Could Rock: Tom Cruise’s insane stunt work alone will make audiences forget The Mummy ever happened. Against all odds, this series just keeps getting better and better. Unless: The stunts and f/x are better than the story. The supporting cast includes Henry Cavill, Alec Baldwin and Angela Basset but will anyone but Cruise make an impression? Predicted Box Office Gross: #2... as in, Cruise will be off making Maverick: Top Gun II by the time you read this!

The MEG (Opens August 10th) The Gist: The 1997 killer shark/beach novel bestseller finally gets made into a movie. Why It Could Rock: A fantastic trailer, a likable cast and persuasive CGI are enough to sell a ridiculous premise. Call it Jurassic Lite. Jason Statham finally gets the lead in a movie that hits big. Unless: The movie is less a guilty pleasure and actually a really bad movie. Shark movies are big in the summer but this one looks less like Spielberg and more like Jaws 3-D. Predicted Box Office Ranking: #5: the season’s biggest sleeper. ■

The Gist: Ryan Reynolds’ raunchy comic book franchise returns. Why It Could Rock: Reynolds’ hard-R rated formula is back. Post-Thanos Josh Brolin is an inspired choice for the villainous Cable. The self-mocking sense of humor sets it apart from other Marvel movies. Unless: Bad word of mouth and the second weekend swipe from Solo takes all the (flatulent) wind out of Deadpool’s tights. The first movie opened in February but in the summer there’s lots more competition. Predicted Box Office Ranking: #8: a disappointment that will open big and drop hard.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (opens May 25th)

The Gist: More dinosaurs stomp all over Kauai... I mean, it’s Jurassic World. Stars Chris Pratt and CGI dinos. Why It Could Rock: Director J.A. Bayona made The Impossible, is skilled at staging jaw dropping action and can keep the f/x from upstaging the actors. Outside of Jurassic Park III, none of these movies haven’t ruled their summer season. Unless: The same-old, same-old feel of the trailer is a precursor for the movie. Jeff Goldblum couldn’t save Independence Day: Resurgence and may have trouble stealing this one as well. Predicted Box Office Ranking: #4 and much less than the previous installment.

sized box office sales next to The Avengers.

Horoscope

Sign Language TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

You’re tough. Sometimes that means it’s your job to take more on than, say, your partner or your friends, simply because you can. You can handle that little bit of extra abuse or punishment, while they’d crumple beneath the pressure. It’s not fair, not at all. But it is, somehow, right. I guess you’re thinking how much it sucks to be you right now, but maybe you can see it another way: It may be twisted, but you’re actually lucky that you’re strong enough to take it, and to be able to show those you love just how much you adore them by picking up some of their slack. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You did stuff a decade ago that you’d be embarrassed about now, and chances are in 10 years you’ll be sheepish about whatever you do tomorrow. That’s life. Resisting change is futile, especially this week. Shit finds you either way, but the good stuff only comes along if you’re willing to embrace and seek out the new. Besides, if you’re really the same person you were a decade ago, I feel sorry for you (as well as everyone who knows you). How dull. I know you value certain things about who you were 10 years ago, but there’s a way to keep those essentials while welcoming vital transformation. This week, show us you know how to do exactly that. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Some of your friends have discovered that you’re a convenient mouthpiece they can use to voice anything dissenting, unpleasant, or unpopular. Being outspoken is one of your talents, but it’s also a kind of curse, because you get all the fallout from shit other people have actually started. Don’t let yourself play the role of ventriloquist’s dummy. If your buddies have something unpleasant to say, let them say it themselves. They probably won’t, which begs the question: if it wasn’t worth it to them to open their mouths to speak their piece, why should you?

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Some say that the best defense is a good offense, and while I disagree with that in general (especially when it’s as misguided and screwed up as our current conflicts), in your case it might be your best strategy. You have a chance to knock down some of your opposition before it can pose a threat. Your alternative is waiting until those you love get hurt and fixing them up afterwards (which, of course, you’re quite good at). But wouldn’t you prefer to mix it up a bit and spare them the emotional bruises and scrapes? You can’t always do that. This week, you can.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Jack-of-all-trades, but master of none–that suits you down to the ground, most of the time. But every once in a while you acquire a longing to be great, truly great at something, instead of quite good at most things. This, too, lies in your grasp, you amazing creature, but it does involve a certain amount of sacrifice (greatness generally always does). This week, a higher level of achievement is available to you, but to get there you really have to be almost insanely focused, putting pretty much everything else on the backburner, including family, friends, downtime, and fun. Now that you know it’s possible, and what it will take, it’s up to you to decide whether or not it’s worth it. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You’re wiser than you think. It’s not like you have all the answers, and are ready to play spiritual adviser to all your friends. But you do have one or two answers, ones you shouldn’t hesitate to share right away. After all, you’ve spent years figuring this shit out. Just think, if you and your friends (most of whom also have one or two different answers) pool your collective knowledge in an open, honest, and constructive way, you’ll all be that much closer to real wisdom and enlightenment. Of course, to do that, you might have to stop biting your tongue and just call it as you see it. Are you ready to do that (and to hear it, too)? If so, this week, let it rip.

VOTED BEST

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

My mom used to frequently (half) joke that the main reason she had kids was for the free labor. There’s nothing wrong, of course, with giving your children chores and responsibilities, but it’s important to remember your duty to them, too. Whether you’re a parent, a boss, a teacher, or anyone who has some degree of authority over others, you have an obligation to them as well. Their well-being, to some extent, is your responsibility. Your job, especially this week, is to use that authority in the way that will benefit them the most, not you. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

I’m always astonished by how many people believe in heaven and hell. The apparent sheer idiocy required to embrace such outlandish concepts is mind-boggling. However, I’m not entirely certain that these ridiculous people are stupid so much as lazy. They obviously haven’t thought through their ideas to their logical conclusions, and seen how completely preposterous and unworkable they are. You’ve been a bit lazy, too. What you’ve chosen to put your faith and energy into isn’t as crazy as believing in heaven, hell and purgatory, but plainly you haven’t taken more than one or two mental steps further down that path. This week, take the time to clearly picture that trail’s destination. Before you take another step, make sure it’s really someplace you’d like to go.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

You can only pour so much caffeine down your gullet before it ceases to be useful. Eventually, nothing can replace a good night’s sleep and a solid meal. Similarly, trying to compensate for other lacks in your life with artificial substitutes won’t get you anywhere (although, like chugging espresso, they might seem to help, for a little while). You need the real thing, whether it be love and affection, support and encouragement, or simply a purpose in life. Luckily, this week you should be able to get quite a bit closer to getting some of that good stuff into your life, and forgoing coffee (or its equivalents) forever. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You’re practically a shape-shifter, the way you can dramatically take on different roles in various situations. Someone who meets you in one context may have tremendous difficulty recognizing you in another, because you’re not at all the same. You act differently, and may even look like someone else. This is an amazing talent, but it can also inspire mistrust in people who require a bit more consistency (or, you could say, a bit less elasticity) in those around them. Can you be reliable as well as flexible? If so, this week make that undeniably clear.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

I suppose we’re lucky your god doesn’t jump at your beck and call, or else we’d have lightning striking people down left and right. Maybe you’re right in passing judgment, and maybe you’re not. In any case, can you shut up about it a bit? It’s none of your business. Although you’ve got pretty good armor between you and the world, it does have chinks, and those you’re talking shit about (however justifiably) will find and exploit them, if you don’t chill out. This might involve temporarily removing yourself from the situations that are pissing you off, but if that’s what it takes to keep from going on the holy righteous warpath, then that’s what you ought to do.

Where’s your moral compass pointing these days? I think it could benefit from a bit of stretching and exercise, because things are never quite as black and white as you’ve made them out to be lately. You’re likely to be operating in a very foggy gray area, this week especially. While in general you do have a good grasp of “right” and “wrong,” you’re not the be-all, end-all authority on the subject. Sure, you could sit on your high horse and be hardnosed and unyielding, but that’d be mighty hypocritical of you (even if you don’t realize it yet). Practice compassion over principle this week. Sometime soon, you’ll be glad you did. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
