The “true north” of the U.S. Senate?

HAWAI‘I SENATORS HONOR LATE U.S. SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN They say artists become famous only after they’re dead. Politicians, it seems, become canonized. In the tradition that scoured for the good in Richard Nixon after his death, Hawai‘i’s U.S. Senators Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono have lined up to praise the late Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) following his death on Sunday Aug. 25 from brain cancer. “We mourn the passing of a great American and human being, John McCain.” Hirono said in a statement. “He fought many battles, met many extraordinary challenges, and faced the end with the courage he exemplified throughout his life. And yet, the end came too soon. “Much will be said and written about John McCain over the days and months ahead, all paying tribute to this grand patriot. All of us who had the privilege of serving with Senator McCain have our personal stories and memories. He was my chairman and I will miss him." Schatz made a shorter statement that hinted at the divisiveness plaguing America, saying, “We lost a hero at a time when we need them. We lost a statesman when there are so few around. His was a life of service and a life well lived. May his memory be a blessing.” Senator Schatz followed with another tribute days later, in support of a resolution to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in honor of McCain. “With the death of Senator McCain, the Senate has lost a giant. He may have represented the people of Arizona, but in doing so, he changed the course of

the world,” said Senator Schatz. “He was the true north of the United State [sic] Senate. He cared deeply about relationships between members of both parties, about legislating, and about finding a way to govern. And while he may be gone, we do not need to forget the lessons and lectures of Senator McCain. He is an example for us to follow. And that is as true today as it was any day of his 32 years of service to the Senate.” The true north of the United States Senate? I’d throw away any compass that leads to Sarah Palin. This guy was a war-hawk who’d land missiles and destabilize governments wherever there was an excuse, then fund it with a tax bill that cut social services enough to make sure his rich kids get perks. After his dramatic return to the senate after surgery to give a thumbs down to the GOP’s proposed Obamacare repeal, McCain earned cred as a “maverick” but he later voted to repeal the individual mandate as part of the Republican tax bill. The loss of the individual mandate

was projected to leave millions uninsured – supposedly the same reason McCain opposed the original GOP plan to scrap the Affordable Care Act. Maverick indeed. But in reality I’m about as interested in debating McCain’s entire career as I am in discussing the ethics of Kurt Cobain’s heroin use. It doesn’t seem most politicians are interested in re-living McCain’s decisions either. In retrospect we don’t want to talk ill of the dead. We search for the admirable pieces of their character, and want to replay the hits that have lasting influence. So, here’s a hit from McCain that still deserves some play. In response to President Trump’s July press conference with Putin, Senator McCain issued a statement: “No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant,” he said. “Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we are—a republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and abroad. American presidents must be the champions of that cause if it is to succeed. Americans are waiting and hoping for President Trump to embrace that sacred responsibility. One can only hope they are not waiting totally in vain.” Sounds like a classic as long as we’re kept waiting. Unfortunately, that’s probably going to be a while.

SEE YOU ON THE ICE SIDE OF THE MOON It’s been a tough week on Earth, so here’s something to entertain your cosmic imagination: On Aug. 20, a team of scientists led by researchers from the UH Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology published its finding of “direct evidence” of surface “water ice” on the Moon’s polar regions. Scientists have long hypothesized the existence of ice on the moon, citing indirect, potential evidence with

But now, following the discovery of lead author Shuai Li, a postdoctoral researcher at the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology at SOEST, and his team, the presence of water ice on the moon is being hailed with “definitive evidence” by NASA and other space agencies. “We found that the distribution of ice on the lunar surface is very patchy, which is very different from other planetary bodies such as Mercury and Ceres where the ice is relatively pure and abundant,” said Shuai Li. “The spectral features of our detected ice suggest that they were formed by slow condensation from a vapor phase either due to impact or water migration from space,” he added, indicating clues as to the water’s origin. The team used data from NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), an instrument which has been aboard the Chandrayaan-1, an Indian spacecraft, since 2008. M3 was designed to confirm the presence of water ice on the moon by measuring reflected light that could then be analyzed for unique spectrum signatures that indicate the composition of the Moon’s surface. “I did not have any hope to see ice features when I started this project,” Li said. “I was astounded when I looked closer and found such meaningful spectral features in the measurements.” Paul Lucey, co-author of the study and professor at UH Manoa, stated that the data “suggest that the delivery, formation, and retention processes of water ice on the Moon are very unique.” It could also be a clue to a greater mystery. Li stated, “Given that the Moon is our nearest planetary neighbor, understanding the processes which led to water ice on the Moon provides clues to understand the origin of water on Earth and throughout the solar system.” Yeah, exploring billion-year-old mysteries is cool, but here’s the really exciting part of Li’s statement: “This work provides a roadmap for future exploration of the Moon, particularly the potential of water ice as a resource.” Yup. Space colonies. Moon exploration has previously been limited by resources (like water) that astronauts need to survive. The presence of water on the Moon could allow us to explore the Moon for longer periods, make previously impossible missions possible, and serve as a base for a jump into deeper space. Retirees Marli and Paulo Ciquinel of Meleiro in southern Brazil discovered a fetishist’s dream in the vegetable garden behind their home: a 17-and-a-half pound potato that has grown into the shape of a huge human foot (with six toes). The “toes” descend in size, much as human toes do, and the largest has roots that look like hair. The “foot” portion of the tuber reaches up almost to knee-height. Marli told the Mirror, “We have never seen anything like it.” Paulo said he was “a little bit scared when we harvested that potato.” The couple don’t plan to eat it.

Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado, is footing the bill for a possible $46,000 reprint job after a recent graduate found a typo on his diploma. Alec Williams, former editor of the school’s newspaper, was examining his sheepskin when he found a line reading “Coard of Trustees,” instead of “Board of Trustees” under one of the signatures. “There was this moment of laughing at it… and the more I thought about it, the more frustrated I got, because I’m sitting on $30,000 worth of debt and they can’t take the time to use spellcheck,” he said. CMU President Tim Foster told The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel that the school will send out corrected diplomas to 2018 grads -- but the typo goes back to 2012 diplomas. Those graduates can request a new diploma if they want to. “This mistake is all ours,” he said.

IRONY Tania Singer, 48, a renowned neuroscientist who is one of the world’s top researchers on human empathy, has been accused by coworkers of being… a bully. “Whenever anyone had a meeting with her, there was at least an even chance they would come out in tears,” one colleague told Science magazine. Others said the daily working environment included threats and emotional abuse, The Washington Post reported on Aug. 12. For her part, Singer denied the most serious charges and said, “(T) he workload and pressure increasing led to stress and strain that in turn sometimes caused inadequate communication with my staff in problem situations.” The Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, where Singer has her lab, granted Singer a sabbatical in 2017 and said in a statement that when she returns, “it is envisioned that Prof. Singer will head, at her own request, a considerably smaller working group for social neuroscience.”

In Columbus, Ohio, workers repairing a street on Aug. 8 hit an unmarked water main, causing homes along the road to lose water. One man couldn’t be deterred from finishing his shower, though: WCMH TV reported that after screaming from his porch, “I was in the f------- shower!” the unidentified resident finished his morning toilette on the street, in the geyser from the pipe. Facebook user Cody Vickers took a picture of two astonished crewmembers as Mr. Clean rinsed off nearby.

EWWWW! Dr. Jay Curt Stager and his colleagues, researchers at Paul Smith’s College, have released results from a study showing that Walden Pond, made famous by naturalist Henry David Thoreau in the mid-1800s, is an ecological disaster, thanks to human urine. The pond was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962, and the site in Concord, Massachusetts, draws hordes of tourists each year. But NBC News reports that swimmers urinating in the water for generations is the most likely cause of high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the pond that cause algae to spread and block the sun’s rays, devastating the fish population. The study authors suggest building a swimming pool nearby to take pressure off the pond. Here’s an idea: More restrooms?

STEP ASIDE, CAT LADIES Agents of Columbus (Ohio) Humane executed a warrant on a home in the Clintonville neighborhood on Aug. 14 in response to complaints about birds inhabiting the home. Columbus Humane CEO Rachel Finney told The Columbus Dispatch that concerns about the birds’ well-being were warranted: Officials found more than 600 birds inside, including macaws, African gray parrots, Amazon parrots, and other species. “It’s pretty overwhelming to step into the house,” Finney said. Removal took all day, and Columbus Humane was undertaking the task of examining each bird from beak to tail. Finney said the agency would decide which birds might be adoptable after assessments are complete. As for the owner, she said, “We’re confident we’ll have charges; it’s just a matter of which charges and how many.”

OBSESSION Chen San-yuan, 69, of New Taipei City, Taiwan, has taken his gaming obsession to another level. “Uncle Pokemon,” as the Feng Shui master is known around town, has mounted 11 smartphones on the handlebars of his bicycle so that he can better play Pokemon Go. United Press International reported that Chen sometimes stays out until 4 a.m. playing the virtual game. His habit costs him $1,300 per month, but he’s not daunted: He hopes to expand his phone lineup to 15. ■

Woken in the middle of the night to a hellstorm of ﬁre, the residents of the Kaua‘ula valley had only time to escape with little but the clothes on their back. In the days following the ﬁre, the family was able to recover remnants of keepsakes and melted jewelry in the rubble. Despite their tremendous loss, the ‘ohana found reasons to laugh and remain hopeful after the disaster, cracking jokes as they salvaged what was left of their home.

A COMMUNITY UNITES AFTER HURRICANE LANE-FUELED FIRES BRING DISASTER • BY AXEL BEERS

was injured with burns on her legs and arms. By 7:30am, while the second fire was still being contained, a third fire broke out behind the Lahaina Civic Center. Nearby residents were evacuated and a firebreak was created around the fire perimeter as the storm winds fueled the rapidly spreading fire. By the early afternoon, the fire was considered 100 percent contained. In the aftermath, many people and families suffered immense losses, but more incredible than the unexpected disaster has been the community support. Uniting under #LahainaStrong, the community has banded together to volunteer, donate, and support each other in this trying time. Here are some of their stories.

We went and told everybody about it, because nobody else knew about it because everybody was boarded up... hen Lahaina residents boarded up their windows and secured their belongings on the Wednesday before Hurricane Lane, they thought they were prepared for the worst. Then the unexpected happened. While the County of Maui was still under a Hurricane Warning on August 23 and 24, multiple fires were reported. The first fire was reported at 9:45 pm on Thursday, Aug. 24 near Ma‘alaea. The ridge was inaccessible to firefighters who were unable to respond at the time, and 30 acres were burned before the fire was extinguished by rainfall. Three hours later, at 12:45am on Friday, a brush fire was observed by Maui Police Department officers on patrol. The fire was well established and spreading rapidly in the Kaua‘ula Valley, fanned by the strong, swirling winds of Hurricane Lane. Over 100 homes were evacuated, and in the aftermath approximately 1500 acres were burned with reported damages to 21 residential structures and 27 vehicles. One woman

They were really helpful people and just let us stay there… The house right across from us is down to nothing. It’s just flat. There’s nothing. There’s just the old tin roof. That’s it. They lost everything except what we put in my garage. The house just to the side of us is down to absolutely nothing. I went down to help, to see if anything is salvageable – not a thing. There is nothing. Our house is still standing as far as the outer structure. The inside is still smoky. “My neighbor had the same problem and got sick yesterday working on the inside

The community’s response is astonishing. “I started this thinking if I could just make a couple hundred dollars for each family that would be amazing! And now look! I’m truly blown away by all the love and support that not only the community has shown but the world has shown. “I would just like to thank every single person who has shown any type of support to these families. Whether it’s donating clothes, time, food, money, etc… you’ve made a difference for these families. And these families are so grateful! Betty McDonald, owner and pastry chef at A Beach Bunny Bakery has been volunteering her expertise to help. “I made hot food to bring down [to Waiola church] on Saturday just to help out however I could. I run a bake shop and the food needed to be organized and made sure it didn’t stay out for too long, so I started to label and organize the food. More people were contacting the church to find out what they could do, what they could bring, so I just asked if I people could just start contacting me. “We have planned to serve 120 people a day between the two locations [Kaua‘ula Valley and Na ‘Aikane O Maui]. It’s been amazing. We’ve basically only been reaching out hardcore since Sunday

night and [Monday] and we’re trying to get food for two weeks between two deliveries and we only have 8 spots to fill [as of noon Tuesday]. “It’s been really amazing working with everybody. Everybody’s been reaching out. Everyone’s been really helpful. Some people are donating whatever they can, like Chef Lyndon Honda. “It was Sunday, my only day off, super tired, and I’m seeing everybody’s posts like they’re gonna help do this and do that and I’m like, ‘Shit I gotta do something for Lahaina. Let me see if I can make some calls and send a blast text and see if anyone’s off or finish work early, and see if they can do something.’ I just sent a blast text and they they were like, ‘Yeah, we can, we can, no worries. OK I go shoot um to Costco’ and within 30 minutes we put this thing together, literally. “Tiare Lawrence said go Na ‘Aikane O Maui because that’s where the displaced families are with some volunteers. So we went over there and we started at 1:30pm. There wasn’t no set time, and then other people just started messaging me, texting me, calling me, ‘Can we help? What you guys need? Tents? Tables? Cooking equipment? It was all last minute stuff. “Next thing you know about 20 guys just showed up. We fed a bunch of volunteers and workers that were cleaning up debris too. We fed over 100 people. We had a lot of food. We had 100 pounds of chicken, 100 pounds of ribs, 60 pounds of hot dogs, 10 pounds of kalua pig. Ke‘eaumoku Kapu gave us kalo, one of the aunties gave

us kalua pig. We had pork adobo, shoyu chicken, pork steak, salad, rice. “Keep supporting Lahaina. The hashtag is #LahainaStrong. There’s a lot of things going out there, whether you contribute monetary or time wise to get the community back on its feet. I’m also gonna be part of a big event we’re gonna do that’s still kinda premature right now, but keep supporting. We have to do as much as we can to get the families up and running. It’s gonna be a long time coming but any support, they’re super grateful. “They have big hearts when you talk to the people who’ve pretty much lost everything and it’s like, ‘How do you have such a positive attitude?’ Puts things in perspective. That’s how I looked at it: Yeah I’m tired but I’m sleeping in my bed. These guys no more nothing. I told myself get off my ass and go help. And everybody was down. One mass text, a couple calls, and then we had several hundred pounds of food and a pretty legit setup.”

Eldon Dorsett, beekeeper of Honey Hand Hawai‘i said, “The ones that survived are all charred but they’re alive. The whole farm is just completely burned, everything is still smoldering. We’ll be able to rebuild it but it’s years of work, gone in a day. It’s crazy because you’d expect to see a pile of stuff where the hives were. A full hive is 100 or 200 pounds of material and there’s nothing… gone. It’s burned down to ashes and the

furthest thing from anyone’s mind at all. 100 percent unexpected. It was the last thing you would think about in a hurricane. It’s just the most insane fire anyone’s ever seen it Lahaina. “It’s just time. Time and money. We’ll repopulate it and rebuild it and we’ll get there. The community’s been pretty unreal to be honest.”

Whatever I made went back to the farm. I have farm loans with the USDA that I have to pay back that has accumulated over time and other personal loans that families had given us. We’re pretty deep but I’m very optimistic. I know what the land has given us and what the community had found in the treasure and the taste of Lahaina. “In the short term we’re getting water back, starting cleaning, and communicating with the Lahainaluna High School. They’re gonna help us by collecting whatever is able to survive. They will hold it for us and then when we’re ready the students will come and help replant those trees or plants in the ground. Hawai‘i Tropical Fruit growers association, a statewide organization, is gonna donate the trees that was lost when we’re ready. And some people in the community are willing to help us to plant. They don’t have much to give in monetary but they have their strength and their compassion to come and help participate in the planting.” Janell, James’ wife added, “We can’t just give up... The community drives us to do this. We feel so so blessed by everyone. Everyone that’s reached out to us and has donated has been just so so kind. It’s been very strong and we didn’t expect this outpouring of love and we’re very grateful.”

Bamboo Fresh ‘A COMMUNITY THAT FEEDS ITSELF IS A COMMUNITY THAT THRIVES’

Hawai‘i imports between 90-95 percent of its food. This, on an archipelago of formerly-productive lands that, pre-Western contact, fed all of the estimated million residents of Hawai‘i. It’s an unsustainable situation, and there is a growing awareness of this stark reality. There are those in our islands already doing what they can to help this unsustainable situation, but we can all do more with our daily spending and eating habits. One easy solution is supporting businesses that feature local produce. The movement toward locally-grown food is the driving force behind Bamboo Fresh, which serves healthy fare with fresh flavors. With a menu full of color and flavors and options for both vegetarians and omnivores, Bamboo Fresh, now in its seventh year, is committed to providing a

cheese, and fresh veggies. The menu is versatile, and each flavor can be ordered as a wrap, salad or rice bowl, “You have a balanced meal in every wrap,” said Michelle. You have the proper balance of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates; you have your live foods and your cooked foods. The chicken is organic and hormone-free. meal that comes with a clear conscience. The restaurant is all the way at the end of Front Street, tucked behind a jumble of shops in The Shops at 505 Front Street next to Lahaina Shores. The interior is cute and colorful, reminiscent of a beach-side fruit stand, with brightly painted walls, a smoothie station, heaps of fresh fruit ready to be popped into a blender for smoothies, and surfboards hanging over the cash register. The day I went in to check it out, Michelle, the owner, was happy to talk us through the menu and the choices she makes in purchasing to include local produce. “The pork and beef is grass-fed and free-range, on island,” she told me. “Everything is cooked in house, slow-baked in our oven. All of our produce is delivered three times a week.” The menu includes flavors of honey-dijon chicken, beef seasoned with rosemary and sage, kalua pig, butter-herb turkey, and lemon pepper chicken. For vegetarians, Mama’s Garden and Tofu & Spice options include avocado, sweet potato, local goat

with coconut water. Beside these main stays, the menu also offers coffee and bagels. “We started from zero, and we’re still here,” said Michelle. “I’m not a foodie; I’m not a chef; this is all by accident.” Michelle used inspiration from her childhood growing up on Rhode Island, where her family used seasonal ingredients and used to “jar and can everything,” she said. From that beginning, she’s become passionate about local food. Despite a series of challenges that many small businesses on Maui encounter, the cafe has persevered, mostly from word of mouth and a mix of tourists and local regulars. One of the hard-to-swallow aspects of eating well is the price tag, but Bamboo Fresh keeps their prices pretty reasonable. going experience.” When asked how the opening has gone so far, Mr. Golin stated, “I’ve had a great response so far, we’ve had a nice turnout.” “We go there a couple times a year,” Golin said when asked why he opened the theater. “That theater had been closed for some time, there was a hole in the market. We felt it would be good to serve that side of the island.” While the current theater has new carpeting in the lobby area, the concession stand remains familiar. It still has the unique cylindrical style, where a person enters in on one side, orders the their goods, and then walks around to the cashier at the end. The old theater closed due to a dry spell caused by a lack of viewers and a generally poor summer and winter film menagerie. Many shops at Kukui Mall

Change happens, but people continue to seek the latest releases on the big screen. This reporter fondly remembers this theater, where once a young man wondered in to a smaller screen and saw the first Alien movie Ridley Scott had made in 33 years, Prometheus . Those highlighted halls with golden lanterns and wonderful upholstery represented the frontier of cinema. The seats were all the same plush cushions with plastic armrests and cup holders. I recall when The Avengers first came out and the theater was full with a line going out of the box office, all the way through the parking lot, and into South Kihei Road. Then, Hollywood hit a dry spell with not-so-great box office blunders, and the Kukui theater felt the loss. It became a husk when it got all the not-so-great hits. One of the last films

he Kukui Mall theater has been closed for some time. That is, until very recently. A mainland company, Regency Theatres, refurbished and renovated the old theater and is currently showing movies at the classic spot. Now sporting updated chairs with button-controlled reclining and leg stands, as well as swivelling food trays, the theater brings homey comfort to audiences trying to catch the latest film releases. There are four auditoriums total at the theater to the left and right of the

concession stand – less than its Central Maui counterparts, but it’s still very comforting to know that Kihei and Maui’s south side has its own theater again, especially considering that the screens have been dim at this location since the old theater closed in 2012. The new theater follows a similar standard to the Maui Mall Megaplex, with plushy cushions and smooth floors as opposed to carpet. Regency Theatres, a mainland company, is owned and operated by Lyndon Golin. They started in 1996 and currently have 28 locations open in Southern California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawai‘i. Lyndon Golin said his vision for the Kihei Kukui Mall theater is “Just to offer a first-class movie

met the same fate in 2012 and later on. Oceans Bar and Grill closed years ago and Mama’s Ribs & Rotisserie just recently closed (their Napili location is still open), while Fat Boy Burger was bought out and turned into Stewz Maui Burger. Even the Local Motion outlet, long standing alone in the Kukui Mall parking lot, has since closed its doors. With all the closed doors in that shopping center, Kihei residents can rest assured: Someone is working to fill Kukui Mall again. But business models may have to change. Indeed, the way theaters were before 2016 may never exist again. Keeping with the times and giving residents a reason to watch something not on Netflix, Maui Megaplex and the Kihei Regency have both upgraded their theater seats to be button-controlled recliners and changed the way people watch movies.

to be played in that theater was Men In Black III. Then the theater was just closed – gone, like Oceans night club. For a time Kihei was without a theater. That has changed. The new cinema is packed with a new and loud sound system, redone upholstery and wall lanterns, and those great reclining chairs that go all the way back with the nice pivoting food tray. If this is the face of a revival in cinema brands across America then all that can be said is: Thank goodness and hallelujah.

Who would’ve thought that Crazy Rich Asians would open bigger than Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper? Or that Hereditary would be a bigger hit than Slenderman? Or that there was even an audience for Hotel Transylvania 3? Now, taking monetary success out of the picture, here’s my look back at the best and the bottom of the barrel in theaters during this summer. The Best My two favorites, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, surpassed expectations and left me salivating for follow-ups I’ll probably never get. The Mr. Rogers documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, wasn’t just a great bio but a timely plea for empathy and compassion. There was lots of mileage left in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which piled on serious thrills for the sixth installment. I wasn’t expecting Deadpool 2 to be better than the original, but it was and might even be the funnier movie. Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman brought the brilliant filmmaker back into the spotlight with an unsettling but spellbinding true-life story. Although Ant-Man and the Wasp was strained, too cute, and forced at times, the third act and that killer postcredits scene salvaged it. Finally, I’d call The MEG a guilty pleasure, except I feel no guilt whatsoever regarding how much I enjoyed it.

In the past, I had a strong batting average of picking the summer movies that would go over big with audiences. Taking quality out of the equation, I’d make my annual predictions of which movies would become summer season blockbusters and this year, I published my picks. To quote a would-be catch phrase uttered by Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was a “big mistake.” I’ve never been more wrong about which movies would hit or flop, and was off from the very beginning. In fact, my top choice, Solo: A Star Wars Story, flopped right out of the gate, becoming the first Star Wars movie to ever fail. I love that movie and have yet to meet anyone who wasn’t a fan but, for a number of reasons, it didn’t connect with most audiences. Here is the current summer movie top ten with their as-of-presstime grosses, next to the failed list I made back in April.

An incredible showing, with $600m in sales

Disappointments The final five minutes of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom gave me a glimpse of the movie I wanted to see… and it’s a set-up for another sequel. Nothing in the latest Chris Pratt-led adventure felt fresh. Likewise, even with a great ensemble cast, Ocean’s 8 was shallow and underwhelming. A slightly better option for the female demographic was the perky but ridiculous Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!, in which Cher and Meryl Streep were wasted. You know it’s a bad summer for women when the main choices are a Clooney- and Pitt-free Ocean’s caper or a sequel to an ABBA musical. Despite those awesome scenes of Dwayne Johnson scaling a 103-story building, bare handed, Skyscraper falls apart long before the building does. Instead of reinvigorating a potent franchise, the Superfly remake proved to be forgettable: neither super, nor fly. Then there was Charlize Theron’s Tully, with a terrific first act that got tripped up by an awkward twist ending. Finally, despite the

Oscar-worthy performance by Toni Collette, the much heralded Hereditary was hardly scary but completely unpleasant and derivative. If this is what art house horror looks like, I’ll take my jump scares and scantily clad babysitters, thank you very much. Bottom of the Barrel The cool-looking trailers for Upgrade promised a hip, sci-fi take on a revenge thriller, not the grungy, action-lite, and charisma-free waste of time that it ultimately is. Last and certainly least, The Spy Who Dumped Me aimed to be the late summer, high concept action/farce that The Hitman’s Bodyguard was a year ago. Instead, it pulled off the unique feat of stranding the delightful Mila Kunis, making Kate McKinnon insufferable, and getting worse and worse for every agonizing moment of its 120-minute running time. I like Kunis and McKinnon, but knowing there will never be a sequel to The Spy Who Dumped Me gives me hope. It’s the only positive thing it left me with.■

Don’t be such a wimp! You’re like someone who goes snowboarding for the first time, then wakes up sore the next day and decides, “This is not for me.” Of course things will hurt when you’re trying something new. This is the equivalent of exercising muscles you’ve rarely used before. I can’t believe you’re willing to give up this easily. I won’t let you, and I hope there are at least a few other people in your life who will push you to keep at it. Get your ass up! Stretch, work out the kinks, and then get right back to whatever it was you were doing to give yourself such an awesome workout. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Recognize that determination will only take you so far. I’m a big fan of mind over matter and an “anything’s possible” attitude, but sometimes you just have to face a big old reality check and admit that something or someone might simply be out of your league (at the very least, right now). If you want to build yourself up to reach new heights, you’ve got to make sure your foundation is solid enough to handle it, or you’ll collapse, regardless of your will to succeed. Take it down a few notches and check on your foundation. Is it cracked? Is it big enough and strong enough to hold you up as you grow? If not, spend this week (and perhaps much longer) working on it before you even contemplate reaching for the heavens. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Scars are not all that define us as individuals, but the wounds we recovered from do play a large part in determining who we are. Thus they should be honored, and, if possible, cherished. Suffering, in the right quantities, can breed incredible, inspiring people. This is not to say you shouldn’t try to ease others’ suffering whenever you can. You should always do your best in this regard; life is hard enough! But when you simply can’t make someone’s troubles go away, you can take comfort in the fact that if they survive their woes, they’ll ultimately be better off for it.

These people mean business. They don’t mess around. You don’t think of yourself as someone who does, but by their standards, you may simply be too vague, non-committal, and ultimately too flaky to count on – unless you step it up. This week is an exercise in patience and maturity – specifically, yours. You’re likely to be subject to a variety of obnoxious and inappropriate behaviors. These aren’t plots to undermine or destroy your peace of mind, but rather incredibly inept and desperate pleas for attention. Can you be the one adult in a sea of emotional teenagers? Or will you complain that it’s not fair? (It isn’t, but that’s just the way it is.) How generous and forgiving can you be? Can you rise above the annoyance and give those in question some of the tolerant, insightful attention they sorely need? They won’t thank you for it, probably – but the rest of us will. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Ants follow scent messages left by their sisters as they carry out their daily labors. You, too, are following secret signals that you might not even be consciously aware of. Luckily, I believe you to have far more capacity than an ant to become conscious of them, and choose how you’ll react to them, instead of just blindly heeding them. This week, try to take note of how many of your decisions you make without really thinking about them. This is not to say you should endlessly deliberate over every little thing. But actually noticing your decisions is the first step towards being able to assess whether they’re smart ones or not. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

When presented with a choice between two kinds of competitions – one a straightforward race, where the fastest person gets the prize, and the other something more devious, which involves analysis, manipulation, and even deviousness – most signs would unequivocally choose one over the other every time. Not you sly Capricorns. Asked to select a preference between those two possibilities, your answer would assuredly be: “Whichever one I’m more likely to win.” Unfortunately, you can’t know that ahead of time in this case, so think of it like this: Run the race whose winner you would ultimately respect more. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

When it comes right down to it, you do what you’ve got to do. You may turn up your nose, at first, to some of the necessities but once you’ve decided they’re necessities, you roll up your sleeves and get to them. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, you’d do what you had to do to survive, even if it meant hunting squirrels for their meat and pelts. We’d find you a couple years down the line garbed all in grey gnawing on a tiny rodent leg quite happily. The situation you’re faced with is one of those: rife with unpleasant necessities. You already know how adaptable you are once you’ve jumped into a situation; the delay is usually while you’re still on the brink. Go on, get it over with. Leap and adapt, already.

Playing rock, paper, scissors may not be the best way to decide something, but at least something would get decided. Short of some kind of intervention, some of us fear that you’ll never come to any sort of point here. I know you’d rather arrive at some kind of intelligent decision that’s less random than simply flipping a coin. But at least that way, you’d finally reach some sort of conclusion, instead of endless wavering as you have been for… how long now? Weeks? Months? Years? Way too long. Flip a coin already. Any decision is better than none.
