The Filipino flag at the county building for Fil-Am History Month

RECOGNIZE FILIPINOAMERICAN HISTORY MONTH BY SUPPORTING SHERATON MAUI WORKERS ON STRIKE October is Filipino-American History Month, and that means more than just competing in the annual balut eating contest. On Oct. 1, Mayor Arakawa, the County of Maui, and the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce kicked off the month by raising the Filipino flag at the county building. Several restaurants provided food for the public in attendance, which was just a preview of the cultural celebration held at Ka‘ahumanu Mall last weekend during the Maui Fil-Am Heritage Festival. But for 325 workers on strike at Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa, participating in a continual component of Filipino-American history takes a much more dire form – resistance. Even as someone of Filipino heritage, I didn’t grow up learning much about the long history of colonization, oppression, diaspora, resistance, and resilience of Filipinos. I remember the first time I learned about the Philippines in elementary school: The mention was in a lesson about Magellan, and how the brave explorer met his demise on an uncivilized island in the Pacific. Yep, the first mention of my heritage in class was about how my ancestors killed the guy trying to sail around the world for the first time. It didn’t seem a glorious history to be proud of. I didn’t know then that Magellan belongs in the history books next to Cook and Columbus, explorers sent on a domineering mission of discovery meant to expand Eurpoeans’ cultural and economic reach across the globe and establish footholds for imperialism and colonization to take place by the West. I didn’t learn that LapuLapu, the chief who killed Magellan, was attacked by Magellan’s men because he refused to bend the knee to foreign powers. I also didn’t learn that because of this act of defiance, Lapu-Lapu is considered the first Filipino hero for being the first native to resist Spanish colonization.

I had to learn these lessons outside of school. Growing up, I tangled with stereotypes of the “good” or servile Filipino, destined for work in the hospitality industry or manual labor. History class, it turned out, also didn’t teach me that Filipino-American history is much more than a diaspora of hard-working immigrants eager to take labor jobs in the states. Filipino-American history is a heritage of standing up for what’s right, and valuing labor and the contributions of workers. Unfortunately, it is a history that is too often forgotten. Cesar Chavez, the Hispanic organizer, is widely known for his contribution to workers rights during the Farmworker Movement, grape picker strikes, and grape boycott. Lesser known is the Filipino manong Larry Itliong, who led Filipino farmworkers that fought for better working conditions. “I’m extremely proud that Cesar Chavez was the right face at the right time, but a lot of the dirty work was already done,” Anhelica Perez, a descendent of Latina participants in the grape picker strike, told NPR in a story titled Grapes Of Wrath: The Forgotten Filipinos Who Led A Farmworker Revolution, referencing how Filipino workers laid the foundation of resistance for decades. While Chavez had been organizing Mexican workers for years, a move as bold as a strike wasn’t part of his plans. When Filipino workers went on strike, Itliong met with Chavez to advocate for

solidarity. Two weeks later, Mexican workers joined the strike and the Filipino and Mexican unions came together to form what would become the United Farm Workers, with Chavez at the helm and Itliong as assistant director. The prominent Delano Grape Strike lasted five difficult years before growers signed contracts with the United Farm Workers. Closer to home, Filipino labor leader Pablo Manlapit resisted oppressive working conditions on Hawai‘i’s sugar plantations, where laborers cut and hoisted cane in the sun for 10-12 hours a day and were paid today’s equivalent of about $13 a day. Manlapit was instrumental in advocating for solidarity between workers of different origins, and fostered an alliance between Japanese and Filipino workers as business owners attempted to divide the working class. Manlapit organized two strikes, one in 1920 and one in 1924, to demand an eight-hour day, better housing, equal pay between men and women, and collective bargaining rights. The first strike was successful in uniting plantation workers. The second ended in the disastrous Hanapepe Massacre in which 16 strikers and four policemen were killed. There are shadows of this heritage of resistance in the strikes going on at the Sheraton Maui and Marriott Hotels across the country. These workers are fighting the same struggles: for better pay, better working conditions, job security, and safety in the workplace. The demographics are also similar. “We don’t have any specific info,” Cade Watanabe, an organizer at Unite Here Local 5, the union representing the striking Sheraton Maui workers, told me in an email. “But I’d say that at least 70-75 [percent] of our membership at the hotel would identify themselves as being Filipino or at least part Filipino.” This is not to say that resistance is uniquely Filipino or to minimize the contributions of the diversity of people who are fighting for their share in the strikes around the country – this is to say that now, as we recognize the last week of Filipino-American History Month, we have an opportunity to look to the past at the history of a people who have stood against class inequality, in order to invigorate the fight to secure rights and fairness

COCONUT POLL: 50% - Yes, it's private property

50% - No, support workers rights

Last week we talked about how Sheraton Maui “trespassed” three of their striking workers who were handing out leaflets to guests. We asked readers if they thought Sheraton Maui was right to do this. 50 of you voted, and the vote was split, 50%-50%. This week we ask: Would you have voted for constitutional amendment to support public education with a new state tax?

for all working people. In a Honolulu Civil Beat op-ed, Jun Shin wrote that the Marriott strike could have implications in Hawai‘i for generations to come. “We have a chance right here and now to win a victory for the workers,” he wrote, “that will help us in the long run in the education, the discussion, and the political and policy decisions that will shape the futures of our generations, our kids generation, and their kids in all of our continued work to shape a fair and just society for all.” Indeed, “the hotel workers’ fight is everyone’s fight.” And Filipino-American labor history echoes all workers’ struggles for their fair share. So this month, while you enjoy the festival pancit, also consider honoring the lesser-known parts of Filipino American history by walking the picket line at Sheraton Maui, discouraging business with the Sheraton until negotiations are settled, listening to strikers, and supporting workers who are walking picket lines 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with food, water, or monetary donations.

CON AM GETS CANNED On Friday, Oct. 19, the Hawai‘i Supreme Court invalidated the ballot question to authorize a constitutional amendment that would have allowed the state legislature to implement a surcharge on investment property to support public education. All four counties in the state of Hawai‘i petitioned the court to have the question removed, citing that the question was too vague to satisfy the requirements of a ballot question. The ballot question drew both passionate support and criticism. The Hawai‘i State Teachers Association, the union for public school teachers, supported the amendment on the basis of funding needs for schools. Opposition came from counties concerned about the surcharge infringing on their taxing power, and the Affordable Hawaii Coalition, which claimed that further taxes would hurt businesses and Hawai‘i’s people. There were compelling arguments on both sides, but the question remains: What next? It’s generally accepted that Hawai‘i’s public schools are underfunded, teachers are underpaid, classroom conditions are less than ideal, and there is a shortage of qualified teachers for students. There have been a few solutions floated in recent years: increasing the conveyance tax, legalizing and taxing adult use of cannabis, raising the general excise tax, auditing the Department of Education, and even breaking apart the DOE so schools are under county jurisdiction. Whatever the case, this much is clear: We must act now, or the education and future of our keiki and state will only be placed further at risk. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @axelbeers

and Consumer Affairs will be available to answer questions. The meeting in Maui will be Thursday, Oct. 25, 4:30-6pm at Maui High School Library. For more information about selling goods and services to HIDOE, visit Hawaiipublicschools.org. HIDOE continues to increase local food in student meals through its ‘Aina Pono programs, including Farm to School and Harvest of the Month. These programs help to connect students with the ‘ ina through food, while using products from Hawai‘i’s local agricultural community. The original Farm to School Initiative was spearheaded by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office in 2015, after Senate Bill 376 was signed into law as Act 218. Today, the Farm to School Initiative is included under ‘Aina Pono, which features SFSB’s other educational programs, test kitchens, meal programs, menu planning, nutrition, school gardens and more. Pomaika‘i Elementary School on Maui has already started participating in the initiative and last week included ulu (breadfruit) in their beef stew. An exhausted teacher on the way to get coffee

SCHOOLS SEEKING LOCALS TO SUPPLY FRESH PRODUCE The Hawai‘i State Department of Education needs more local farmers and vendors to supply fresh produce for student meals on the island, with an emphasis on locally grown fruits and vegetables. This is part of the department’s efforts to introduce fresh, locally grown products in student meals through its ‘Aina Pono programs, including Farm to School and Harvest of the Month. “Our students have shared with us how they enjoy eating fresh, local ingredients in their school lunches,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto. “We want to continue serving these healthy meals to our students through our ‘Aina Pono programs. In order to do that, we need to grow and expand our partnerships with Hawaii’s agriculture community.” During the next two weeks, HIDOE will be hosting produce solicitation pre-bid meetings for local farmers and vendors across the state. Maui is buzzing over Chef Sheldon Simeon’s new full-service restaurant, Lineage, located at the Shops at Wailea. The restaurant concept draws on Simeon’s experiences and memories of growing up on Hawai‘i’s Big Island and the many cultures and cuisines that comprise the “Hawaiian Spirit.” The menu was designed to evoke the feeling of dining at home alongside extended family and feasting on familystyle dishes typical of a Hawaiian luau – in a relaxed community atmosphere.

Kaimana Coffee is keeping Maui teachers caffeinated. The coffee truck operators have launched a “Teacher of the Week” program where a selected teacher is invited to have a drink on them each day that week. At the start of their second month in business, Kaimana Coffee owners Josh Kent and Tonya Smoot-Kent said giving back to the community was important to them. “When we decided to start our coffee truck we knew three things were essential,” they said. “We had to source the right coffee, choose the right equipment, and find a way to give back to our community.” We are asking our customers to nominate a teacher who they would like to receive this gift knowing that the gesture will mean as much as the drinks we serve them, said Kent. To start things off Kaimana Coffee decided to thoroughly caffeinate Michael Stubbs from Kihei Charter School. “Though Michael isn’t one of our daughter’s teachers, he had searched us out to show his appreciation for the coffee and tea we surprised staff with earlier that week,” Kent said. “Learning that his family had been blessed with a new baby, we thought he should be our first Teacher of the Week,” Tonya said. “Our goal is to involve the community and get them as excited as we are to make these drinks. As our business grows we look forward to expanding and collaborating on programs that embody Aloha here on Maui.”

The public can nominate a teacher by dropping their favorite educator’s name in the pot at the Kihei location Mon-Fri 7am-3pm (next to Maui Brewing Company) or at Swap Meet on Saturdays from 7am-1pm.

CHEF SHELDON CELEBRATES HIS HERITAGE WITH NEW RESTAURANT, LINEAGE

When news of the restaurant’s opening hit the coconut wireless, social media posts started populating the feeds: “We should go,” “I have to try this,” and “This weekend!,” were among the most common responses to Lineage and its menu that features Simeon family recipes as its foundation. Maui’s favorite “Top Chef” designed the menu to celebrate the food of his Filipino ancestors, as well as a life growing up on the islands. A handful of the dishes also honor and acknowledge the family recipes of some of Simeon’s kitchen staff. With the motto “Eat, Drink, Talk Story,” Lineage embraces the importance of keeping tradition alive and the passing down of recipes within families over the years, according to a restaurant spokesperson. The menu is comprised of a selection of family-style pupus, snacks, entrees, and desserts. To begin, mobile carts built by Simeon’s father (a former welder by trade) go from guest to guest, offering dim-sum style appetizers including pickled Hawaiian fruit, boiled peanuts, and kim chee dip served with Hilo-based Maebo “one-ton” chips reminiscent of Chef Sheldon’s childhood. Along with his wife Janice, Sheldon also owns and operates Tin Roof in Kahului, where he serves innovative, local lunch-style dishes in take-out bowls. Lineage is located at The Shops at Wailea and is open seven days a week, serving dinner from 5-11pm. Lunch service will be added in the future. A limited number of reservations are available daily at 5pm and 9pm, and all seatings in between are first come first served. Lineage offers a 25 percent kama‘aina discount for locals. ■

Tell us about the lawsuit you won and how that will influence your leadership. It kind of brings the question pertaining to what title is all about, especially for Native Hawaiians, when you’re talking about land commission awards, royal patents, how the now new regime of the government had placed everything in a tax map key. My stronghold is pertaining to our litigations in the past with West Maui Land Company. I’ve been able to pursue my endeavors for 17 years in the Second Circuit Court and finally recognized through the judge to determine the case through a jury trial, which I won 100 percent of the property, whereas Makila Land Company owns zero. That kind of escalated into a very iconic period in Native Hawaiian rights and land rights when it comes to title. So I always tell everybody out there that you know everybody is required to get title insurance, but title insurance is fraudulent. What I’ve been able to forward in my long years of experience is to initially find clarity for a lot of Hawaiians that are still going through a lot of the issues when it come to quiet title, adverse possession claims, and that’s what I can add to the board on the Office of Hawaiian Affairs – to have a section in there to make sure that we have a department in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to address the issues of Native Hawaiians that are still going through quiet title, adverse possession claims. What is an issue you want to address that affects the Native Hawaiian community? The Department of Hawaiian Homelands gets monies from the federal government, but for Hawaiians that have less than 50 percent [blood quantum] fall under a different category where they don’t have any venue to allow them an opportunity to own homes on the DHHL. That’s why I feel that OHA, being it’s a state quasi-entity, should be the developer for Native Hawaiians of lesser than 49 percent to provide affordable homes.

You’re a Republican – First of all let me just tell you I’m what you would call a moderate Republican. Think John McCain, don’t think Donald Trump because I’m not a fan. Absolutely not. I think the way he talks about women is horrendous and I’m frankly surprised that the Republican Party itself hasn’t spoken out more against some of the things that he says. If anybody has a sister or if they have a mother, it doesn’t matter to me if you have an R or a D next to your name – they should be offended by that kind of talk. I think he’s – you know I used to work for him, I played at the Trump casino in Vegas he sat front row with with Melania – so when I met him he was a nice guy but he could be a nice guy for five minutes. The idea is, who are they really. People wanted to see what it would be like. He’s not a Republican, he’s not an independent, he’s not a Democrat, he’s an enigma that everybody rolled the dice with and allowed him to do what we’re now having to live with, but I would never want to be trumped up with the rest of the people who support what he does and what he stands for. I don’t agree with any of it or the people that he associates with. So then what does it mean to be a Republican? I believe in the Second Amendment because if somebody comes at you with a weapon, a slingshot ain’t gonna help you any. So I do believe that everybody has the right to bear arms. Second I think the Jones Act which is actually a maritime law, it was written in 1920, is one of the reasons that you have a lot of expensive groceries, for instance. ■

News Of The Weird THE DIFFERENCE AN APOSTROPHE MAKES Genevieve Snow, 29, hired a Brooklyn company, Joanna’s Cleaning Service, to spruce up her apartment on Aug. 27. It wasn’t her first transaction with the company, and she let two women in before leaving for work that day. But when one of Snow’s roommates woke up, she found one of the cleaning ladies sitting on the couch, eating. “You know when you’re not supposed to be doing something, people jerk up really quickly? They did that,” the roommate, Kristen Nepomuceno, 28, told the New York Post. Nepomuceno left for work, but when she returned around 5:30pm, the apartment was trashed, one of the ladies was gone, and the other was passed out on the kitchen floor next to a smashed spice rack. She quickly left and called police, who arrived to find the cleaning lady was sitting on the couch, eating ice cream. “She is... hammered, beyond hammered,” Nepomuceno said. New York police refused to file a report, so Snow gave the cleaning service a bad review on Yelp. That’s when the owner of the company Snow had previously used, Joanna Cleaning Service, got in touch to say a former (fired) employee had started Joanna’s Cleaning Service and had taken Snow for a ride. Now Snow can’t get in touch with EITHER Joanna and just wants to find out who’s responsible for the damage so she can sue them.

HOW ARE YOU SURE IT’S NOT SATAN? Officials in Midway, Arkansas, still don’t know what caused flames to shoot out of a hole in the ground on Sept. 17. Volunteer fire chief Donald Tucker was summoned to private property at the edge of town where the flames were shooting up to 12 feet high, reported the Springfield News-Leader. Tucker inspected the site after the fire subsided and said the 2-foot-diameter hole was about 3 feet deep and made a 45-degree turn at the bottom. “I took a temperature reading of it and it showed 780 degrees inside the hole,” he added, but he couldn’t identify the source of the flames. There are no gas lines nearby, and there was no smell of gas before or during the fire. He also ruled out a meteor strike or flaming space junk. Geologists from the Arkansas Geological Survey inspected the hole and concluded it had been dug by an animal, but they took soil samples for testing. County judge Mickey Pendergrass said Satan had also been ruled out.

tween 2014 and 2018 he got to under 200 pounds: “I’ve gone from a blood pressure of 140/80 to 112/65... I was healthy for the first time in my life.” He also said he’s now playing DDR competitively.

FAMILY VALUES On the day Ester Price, 95, of Pamplin, Virginia, was admitted to the hospital with an unexplained illness, her son-in-law, Jack David Price, 56, kindly brought her a coffee – “not an ordinary event,” according to an investigator. Doctors found signs of meth in her system, reported The News & Advance. Jack Price’s stepdaughter told the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office she suspected he was trying to kill his mother-in-law, and a neighbor said Price had once told him he should “put some meth in her drink,” then claimed to be only kidding. On Oct. 4, Price was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to two felonies.

FUNSUCKERS If you’re over 12 years old in certain parts of Virginia, you’d better hustle up your own fun for Halloween night. In several communities surrounding Chesapeake and Newport News, KUTV reported, city codes make it a misdemeanor for anyone over 12 to wear a costume and troll the neighborhood for candy. Penalties include fines ($25 to $100) and up to six months in jail. Even lawful trick-or-treaters must be done by 8pm, and in Newport News, parents accompanying children may not wear masks.

INEXPLICABLE Staci Tinney of Charleston, West Virginia, was expecting a bank statement when she picked up her mail on Oct. 8, but instead she found just one item in her mailbox: a laminated picture of a llama wearing sunglasses. Tinney’s surveillance video showed “a woman was hanging out of the passenger’s side of (a black pickup) truck... removing things from my mailbox, and looked like she was putting something inside my mailbox,” Tinney said. WCHS reported other neighbors also were missing mail and packages that day. Tinney told reporters the mail thieves claimed to be “handing out wedding invitations,” but she was dubious: “We don’t know anybody who knows a llama personally.” Charleston police are investigating.

AWESOME!

A CRACKER-PIECE

Kotaku.com reported on Oct. 3 that gamer Xopher credits the arcade game “Dance Dance Revolution” with restoring his health. Xopher grew up in Arkansas and loved playing DDR at arcades. But when his cardiologist told him he’d have to trim down from his 325 pounds or risk needing a heart transplant, Xopher got serious about the game. He found an “excellently priced” DDR machine on eBay and restored it, starting with just three games a night. Be-

ur political system is filled with monsters. There are mindless politicians who wander the island like zombies and never genuinely listen, undead establishment figures who spring from the dirt to cling to power, wicked sycophants who patch together and enable abominations, and witch-donors who manipulate the voodoo dolls of elected officials. Like the monsters that wander door to door on Halloween, however, things are not always as they seem. The ghouls in the political system can also be unmasked and revealed… that is, if you can conquer the beast that is the Hawai‘i Campaign Spending Commission website. For our scariest issue of the year, we decided that this was the perfect task for a group of meddling kids like us at MauiTime. We sifted through the primary campaign contribution reports from 2018 for all councilmembers and mayoral candidates still in the running for your vote in the general election on Nov. 6, so you could see who and what, at this point in time, is paying to influence the election in Maui County. If underneath the mask you simply find another monster, remember: The voting booth is your silver bullet.

STANFORD S CARR Total donated: $5,500 Recipients: Alan Arakawa ($2,000) Riki Hokama ($1,000) Mike Victorino ($2,500) Carr is the president of the Honolulubased development company, Stanford Carr Development LLC, which has projects in the state on the Big Island, O‘ahu, and Maui. On Maui, Carr’s only active project is Kahoma Village in Lahaina, which includes 102 townhome units and 20 singlefamily homes as part of a residential workforce housing program that targets families making 80-140 percent of the area median income (80 percent of the AMI for a family of three is $77,500). Not so scary, right? Well, some of Carr’s other ventures include the luxury developments Wailea Fairway Villas, Wailea Pualani Estates, and Pukalani Fairway Estates. About the Wailea Fairway Villas, the Stanford Carr Development website states, “Built in 1998, owners either live here full time, part time, or rent long term.” Now that’s scary. What’s more, Maui Tomorrow reported that his Kahoma Village development requested 15 (!) exemptions from county laws governing development, including exemptions from impact fees and grading permit fees. Consider that Carr organized a fundraiser for Arakawa that cost $1,000 per person at a glamorous Waikiki restaurant, and the connection here becomes downright chilling.

HAWAII REGIONAL COUNCIL OF CARPENTERS Total donated: $6,000 Recipients: Stacy Crivello ($2,000) Mike Victorino ($4,000) This is the Hawai‘i chapter of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, a union with a

mission “to stand strong with our members and business partners to help them achieve success. UBC education and training advances leadership, skill, quality, productivity, safety, and attitude with the goal of creating a constructive culture within the construction industry and providing a competitive workforce for our contractors and owners.” I’m not one to union bash without good cause, but it should raise some eyebrows to see who this union thinks will do the best at keeping builders employed.

CHAD S GOODFELLOW Total donated: $6,500 Recipients: Yuki Lei Sugimura ($1,000) Riki Hokama ($2,000) Alan Arakawa ($1,000) Mike Victorino ($2,500) Chad Goodfellow is the president of Goodfellow Bros. Inc, a general contractor that operates in North America with offices in Hawai‘i, Oregon, Washington, and California. The company holds over half-a-billion dollars in current and future contracts with the county’s engineering department, and it seems they want to donate big to keep the money rolling in. Sure, road improvements and drainage projects sound great, but when a company makes its money dealing in million-dollar contracts to pave and grade the island you have to ask: What is its president hoping to gain by donating to these politicians, and is that the Maui we want?

JARRET CHOY Total donated: $7,000 Recipients: Alan Arakawa ($2,000) Riki Hokama ($2,000) Mike Victorino ($3,000) Choy is the VP of sales at a company called H2O Process Systems, and, boy, if you want a get spooked go check out the company’s website… it’s circa-2000 design is enough to make a man go insane. H2O Process Systems is a company specializing in waste management and related pumps and other equipment. In January, the company was awarded $93,728 from the county for “Furnishing & Delivery of One Sound Attenuated DOT Trailer Mounted Diesel Pump package 8” for the Department of Environmental Management. Considering the county’s problem with cesspools, one could hope for the best and think the donations are evidence of support for efforts to modernize our waste management, and not evidence of pay-to-play.

Continued from page 15 federal government marginalizes minority groups. Iwamoto has demonstrated that she prioritizes applying progressive solutions to the causes of living wages, affordable housing, education, and the environment. Significantly, she is willing to say definitively that ‘one job should be enough’ and that pre-K through graduate school education should be publicly funded… we believe that Kim Coco will be the best balance as Lt. Governor to ensure that bold progressive ideals and social justice remain in the conversation and are extended to the public as solutions worth fighting for.” Our opinion of her hasn’t changed. Her donations are only of concern if you consider her efforts to fully fund education, provide affordable housing, mandate a living wage, and fight for social justice frightening – in which case, I’m afraid to say, you might be the monster.

LOCAL UNION 1186 IBEW Total donated: $8,000 Recipients Alan Arakawa ($1,000) Stacey Crivello ($1,000) Mike Molina ($1,000) Yuki Lei Sugimura ($1,000) Mike Victorino ($4,000) Local Union 1186 is the local chapter of the National Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, though looking at their website one might get the impression that it’s a mustache club (which would also explain the Victorino endorsement). Maui’s total membership in the union is 260, making it a relatively small local union chapter, but it’s still got the bucks to support candidates they think will keep business good for electricians.

MILTON CHOY UNITE HERE LOCAL FIVE Total donated: $8,000 Recipients: Elle Cochran ($4,000) Tamara Paltin ($2,000) Keani Rawlins-Fernandez ($2,000) Unite Here Local Five is a hotel and hospitality workers union that represents employees statewide. Lately, they’ve made news for representing and organizing the strikes at Kyo-Ya owned hotels including the Sheraton Maui. The union is pushing the large hotel companies with the rallying cry “one job is enough” in order to give workers better wages and working conditions, and provide workplace safety measures. The tactics of Unite Here Local Five should scare CEOs like Arne Sorenson of Marriott International, who made 395 times the amount median employees made at his hotels. For most of us here on Maui, though, Unite Here Local Five is a nonthreatening union that stands up for workers’ rights and makes sure Maui’s residents get their fair share from the booming tourism industry.

HAWAII OPERATING ENGINEERS INDUSTRY STABILITY FUND Total donated: $8,000 Recipients: Alan Arakawa ($1,000) Riki Hokama ($2,000) Mike Molina ($1,000) Mike Victorino ($4,000) This PAC formed to fund the interests of the Operating Engineers Local 3 in Hawai‘i. “From heavy equipment operators and mechanics, to surveyors, construction inspectors, highway maintenance workers, police officers and other public employees,” the union states on its site, “we represent the men and women who drive this country’s economy.” So, it’s a union that relies on continual development to ensure job security for its members, but at what cost? Well, Hawai‘i Operating Engineers Industry Stability Fund has supported the plagued Honolulu Rail project and the massive expansion of the Kahului Airport. Yikes!

Total donated: $9,000 Recipients: Alan Arakawa ($2,000) Riki Hokama ($2,000) Yuki Lei Sugimura ($2,000) Mike Victorino ($3,000) Milton Choy is another member of the Choy family and employee for H2O Process Systems, the company with a $93,728 award from the county. The Choy family, it seems, is going all in. Liann Choy, listed as the company’s secretary donated another $2000 to Yuki Lei Sugimura, and Lacie Choy donated $2,000 to Riki Hokama. Basically, the company was awarded almost $94,000, then turned around and donated over 20 percent of that to the political candidates that could help them get more awards. Interesting. Keep an eye on this one, especially when county awards and contracts are given out.

SHANE VICTORINO Total donated: $10,000 Recipients: Mike Victorino OK, Shane Victorino is no frightening monster. In fact, in addition to bringing pride to Maui by killing it in the major leagues, he’s started a foundation to help underserved youth with educational, recreational, and wellness programs. If anything, the real ghoul here is in the details. While candidates for two-year termed offices (like councilmembers) are limited by law to $2,000 in aggregate donations from a single source and four-year termed offices (like mayor) are limited to $4,000, the Hawai‘i Revised Statutes provides an exemption for family members to donate up to $50,000. So if your family is wealthy, you’re in luck. If you’re a grassroots candidate going against that kind of funding, however, the deck is stacked against you. Inequality enabled by law: Now that’s true horror. ■

'A Natural History Psychedelia' ARTIST ALEXIS ROCKMAN TALKS ABOUT THE INTERSECTION OF ART, SCIENCE, AND HUMAN IMPACT

drawings as well as prehistoric and post-human landscapes, works at the intersection of art and science. “I think it’s very difficult to talk about ecology at this point in history without taking into account how humans are somewhat of a problem, and not necessarily a positive effect on this planet,” said Rockman, when I asked him about some of the darker themes in his work. “There’s not many places in our culture that are willing to really face the consequences of that. One of my responsibilities as an artist, because I’m in a position to pretty much say what I like and I’m not challenged by corporate or institutional powers, I’m able to put things in my painting and have a public discourse that not many people to do.” Rockman arrived to this ideology through the evolution of his career. “The more I learned about the history of ecology, the more I was aware of the

human place in that, and some of the darker and unspoken threats that were fascinating. Also, I very much abhor secrets and the denial of facts, and we’re dealing with that more and more with our current administration. I think it’s more and more my job to point out some of the things that are the problem in terms of hurting biodiversity.” Rockman is looking forward to talking about these issues during his visit to The Green Room, during which he will present selected works and highlight his engagement with ecological change. At the heart of what he is trying to do is breach complex and trying topics through his medium: “I try to encourage people to appreciate all the biodiversity that’s around them.” ■ jen@mauitime.com For more A&E stories, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

n one of Alexis Rockman’s paintings, a kracken-like creature reaches out of the depths to destroy a shoreside factory. In another, a futuristic scene depicts a decayed civilization, a sunken bridge in the distance, and a seal peering through polluted green waters. Through his varied collections, which range from apocolyptic to anthropologic, Rockman constructs naturalist scenes as well as lost worlds, cryptic warnings of impending change, through vividly colored paintings that depict sometimes startling scenes. This weekend, Maui’s art fans will get a chance to spend the evening with the artist and naturalist. Saturday, October 27 at 7pm, Rockman will present in The Green Room at the McCoy Studio Theater of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The prolific artist, who has exhibits in museums around the country and consulted on the film Life of Pi , lives and works in NYC and was invited to Maui by the Merwin Conservancy

for its ongoing Green Room Salon Series. Following his presentation, there will be a reception with a book signing, book fair, and refreshments. Rockman’s art, which depicts “a natural history psychedelia,” is achingly vivid and timely. I caught up with Rockman while he was en route to Maui, in Ohio at the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art. He was opening his show, “Great Lake Cycle.” We talked about his presentation at the MACC, the problem of humans, and his love of isolated ecosystems. Rockman is a world traveler who is influenced by scientists, historians, anthropologists, and ecologists throughout his travels to places like Tasmania, Antarctica, and Madagascar. Islands are of special interest to him. “I love how each island has its own biodiversity, and has its own history, since it’s been isolated from the rest of the world. Things evolved there that are completely unique. Hawai‘i... is one of the great examples of biodiversity. I’m fascinated by the history of Hawai‘i from an ecological perspective, and one of the things I’m going to be talking about is several pieces of art that relate to Hawai‘i but also how I approach other parts of the world like Tasmania, Madagascar, and Long Island.” Alexis’ art, which includes field

'Halloween' The Scream Queen returns for yet another Halloween ★★★★★ Rated R / 106 Min.

J

amie Lee Curtis returns to the series that gave her the unchallenged title of Scream Queen and launched her career. After years of establishing her versatility in various projects, Curtis once again honors her fan base with another deeply felt, complex take on Laurie Strode. In this distinctly different take on the series, Strode is a recluse, believed by her daughter to be agoraphobic, and living in a fortress complete with artillery and a panic room. The reason for her madness: Mass murderer Michael Myers is imprisoned, but the danger of him getting out and finding her is always present. David Gordon Green’s film is odd and unsteady most of the way but is redeemed by the maximum suspense generated by the third act. There are brilliant touches throughout, particularly the inverting of iconic character placement poses from the 1978 original. There’s also a skillful, one-shot take that not only builds tension in reestablishing Myers in his element, but comments on how Halloween is a night when someone wearing a white mask and carrying a kitchen knife can go unnoticed. The decision to make this the “official” part two and disregard every other sequel is not only unwise but doesn’t hold up. It’s a stretch to believe that Strode became a borderline nutcase and dedicated survivalist from an incident that occurred when she was in high school. I find it hard to believe that, forty years later, Strode becomes a crazy cat lady-type after surviving a masked killer, who she defeated. If anything, I’d suspect she’d become a motivational speaker or own her own dojo. The unhinged version of Curtis’ Strode

He’s back! And he's killing all ‘unofficial’ sequels!

here suggests the events of the sequels also took place; she seems to have survived not only The Night He Came Home, but the subsequent hospital attack, her battle 20 years later in a boarding school, and nearly being murdered by Myers while institutionalized. There’s also an unexpected but welcome nod to Halloween III: Season of the Witch, another touch that suggests hitting the reboot button was an unwise decision. Not only does erasing the prior installments undermine what’s good about them, it doesn’t distract from how this is still just a remake of the story beats from the original. It’s better in parts than as a whole, and the best moments impress and leave a lasting impression. Curtis is excellent, although, as in Halloween II, she adorns an unconvincing wig. While there is depth and nuance to her portrayal, Curtis actually had better character de-

velopment to work with in Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later, which is still the best Halloween sequel. Playing Strode’s estranged daughter, Judy Greer has a great scene near the film’s end, and newcomer Andi Matichak is solid as Strode’s headstrong granddaughter. Gordon’s film is very contemporary in its filmmaking and attitude, as it reflects modern-day paranoia, pessimism, and unease with authority figures. It’s also one of the few Halloween movies clearly made by a filmmaker with a commanding sense of style. The overall result is equally as fascinating as a redo and a commentary on Carpenter’s original as well as Rob Zombie’s very personal, under-appreciated 2007 remake. Some of Green’s film feels off, starting with the title sequence, which refashions the pumpkin motif in a goofy manner. Strode sometimes vanishes for long patches of time

and, following a striking pre-title sequence, it’s hit-and-miss for most of the running time. Once it becomes about Strode’s final confrontation with Myers (and, movingly, her belated attempt to reconcile with her fedup daughter), the film truly shines. While the ending suggests yet another sequel, this is just fine as a stand-alone work. Finally, what’s with that title? Why not Halloween 2018: Forty Years Later or Halloween: Myers v. Strode – Dawn of Justice? Giving it the exact same title as the original is confusing. Despite the shared moniker and plot similarities, John Carpenter’s original is still the best and towers above this and, really, most other films that have come before and since.Yet, it’s great to see Curtis back, and the affection and skill Green gives this. If you love being scared and have a strong stomach, then Happy Halloween, everyone! ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Halloween has its roots mainly in the ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain. Their calendar divided the year into two parts, light and dark, with Samhain (roughly translated as “Summer’s End”) representing the end of the light half and the beginning of the dark half. You are all too familiar with your dark side, but sometimes I worry about you losing touch with the lightness that is also an important part of you. Can you use the next six months to get back in touch? After all, the darker things get, the easier it is to shine.

but that’s not really what you need, Taurus. You need a holiday where you can relax all control, and nothing bad will happen. You can do whatever you want, and the next day face no consequences worse than a bad hangover. Unfortunately, no such holiday exists, yet – but that shouldn’t stop you from making one up. Even if you never actually manifest it (although you should), just figuring out what you’d want on your own personal holiday will be a great (and very educational) exercise. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

As much as we are evolving to become more cooperative, as a species we’re still pretty hardwired towards hierarchy. Most humans are pretty familiar and comfortable with other humans having more or less power than them. Thus when we’re in a situation where everyone is supposed to be equal, and only a vote – or better yet, consensus – will lead to an actual decision, it’s sometimes difficult figuring out how to get things done. This week, luckily, you’ll get some practice. Remember, you don’t need to quell your natural leadership instincts – just use them to make sure everyone gets their say.

Unfortunately a leak in the roof often means ripping out the whole ceiling and making a general mess of things. By the time the water penetrates to where you live, there’s more to deal with than just throwing a patch up top could take care of. Some problems are like that – once they’ve manifested, addressing them requires more than a Band-Aid. This, is one of those – or it will be. You can’t even see the problem yet, but you may already suspect it exists. A little investigation will reveal more, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it – you may yet have a chance to nip this thing in the bud. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Halloween has long been one of my favorite holidays. Not the sterile, lameass kids’ version that it’s become today, but the darker one I enjoyed as a kid (and still do). Masks have power, and donning one can let you explore sides of yourself that you might not get to, normally. What facet of yourself might enjoy release this week? I’m absolutely positive that there’s some fascinating (and perhaps a bit scary) part of you that rarely gets to see the light of day. This week is a great time to let him or her come out and play. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Some plants have evolved to be carnivorous, and found ways to lure small animals and insects into their grasps. There are animals that have evolved to resemble plants in order to find a niche in which to survive. Obviously their evolution is a slow and mostly unconscious process. Yours, however, is quite the opposite: much faster, and much more conscious. You have the luxury of asking yourself: “If I change in order to fit in better, what will I have then become? Will I like that?” It’s an important question, and one I hope you find a positive answer to before you take your next step. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

The problem with prophecy is that it almost always invalidates itself. Suppose you dream about a possible future. From then on, many of your choices and actions may be influenced by that dreaming vision – and probably keep it from ever happening. That’s free will for you. I’m not suggesting you’re psychic, but sometimes you have pretty strong premonitions about how something may play out. However, instead of acting to prevent the outcome, you’re intent on proving yourself right, and act to manifest it instead – even when it’s not something you actually want to happen! Talk about subtle self-sabotage. May I suggest you quit that, pronto? ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You don’t need a Halloween mask to show your true colors – you have trouble hiding them under normal circumstances, so there’s no real revelation there. While donning a disguise can be a very useful exercise for people with more hidden aspects than you, you don’t need that excuse to let it all hang out. You’ve always been very what-you-see-is-what-youget. Thus this Halloween can be about fun in its purest form. Go on and be something you’re not, but wish you were. Go for the longest stretch you can think of. Not that you need another one, but consider this holiday a fantastic excuse to just play. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

I encouraged some signs to use Halloween’s mask tradition to express rarely-visible parts of themselves,

Certain life milestones (losing your virginity, falling in love, getting your heart broken, etc) are more widely recognized than others. Unfortunately, the ones that don’t get as much press are the ones that stick with you Cancers more tenaciously. Take, for instance, the first time you lie to someone with whom you’ve always been honest – not to get away with something, but to protect them, or the time when you first put your own needs aside to address someone else’s. These are important emotional markers for you Crabs, and they deserve some attention – from you, at least, if not anyone else. Make note of the significant moments that have changed you, and this week try to find some way to honor them. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Give the world some bitter, nasty weather, and then follow it with a few days of mellow sunshine, and most people will have a hard time maintaining a bad mood. Obviously, you can’t control the weather, but the principle can still be employed. Create an environment that’s less stressful and unpleasant than wherever someone has just been, and you’re likely to enjoy a much less stressed and unpleasant version of that person. This week is all about what you can do for others to make their lives better. There’s no need to precisely emulate fellow Leo Martha Stewart, but moving in that direction sure couldn’t hurt.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Despite your obsession with efficiency, you usually find ways to be polite as well. (Perhaps you’ve discovered that offending people can cause tremendous delays that no amount of efficiency can offset.) I’m glad you’ve frequently practiced them, because those skills of tact and diplomacy will need a rigorous workout this week. Don’t skimp on your manners, or you’ll pay the price in tedious time and effort repairing the damage. Sure, all that stuff is pretty much bullshit – unfortunately, it’s bullshit that some people – people you need to deal with – still take pretty seriously. Therefore, you should, too. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Sometimes you may wish you were more like a turtle or a snail, with a hard shell to retreat into when the world gets nasty. However, given the nature of life’s challenges, such a strategy would rarely get you out of trouble, but only postpone it instead. Shielding yourself from pain temporarily won’t make it go away. I wouldn’t advise it, unless all you needed was a couple minutes to breathe – because that’s all you’d get. When something troubling happens, don’t retreat from it. Instead confront it head on. The shortest, quickest route past this rough patch is straight through it. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
