Inmates at MCCC refused orders and started a "small" fire

IS MAUI COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER REACHING ITS BREAKING POINT?

CORPORATION COUNSEL PAT WONG ARRESTED FOR PHYSICAL ABUSE, GIVEN PAID LEAVE While International Women’s Day began in Maui County Council Chambers with morning affirmations of the importance of gender equality and women in positions of power, events at the end of the evening proved that upsetting the patriarchy isn’t a mere day’s work. At 12:15am on March 9, Maui County’s top civil lawyer, Corporation Counsel Patrick Wong was arrested and charged by the Maui Police Department for physical abuse of a household member, later confirmed to be Wong’s girlfriend. MPD’s logs show that emergency medical services were called for

14% - No, times have changed

Last week we talked about Native Hawaiian indigenous agriculture. We asked readers if they think Native Hawaiian indigenous agriculture is relevant today. 86% of you voted “Yes, we have much to learn.” This week we ask: Do you think paid administrative leave is appropriate for government workers under investigation for crime?

tained that being arrested “is no small thing.” When asked whether paid leave is an appropriate consequence for someone charged with a violent crime, however, King said “that’s how you do things when you don’t have a conviction.” In some instances, she explained, paid administrative leave has served to protect the wrongly accused while they are under investigation. Rather, “we need a culture shift in Maui,” she stated. “We’re still thinking like a small town community but we have big city issues… We have all the things that plague big cities and we’re still operating within a culture of cronyism and nepotism, rather than looking at how we are going to fulfill the needs of the residents with real professionals.” As far as the issue of men in positions of power who abuse power, which has grown in the national social consciousness over the last year with the #MeToo movement, King said that “one of the things that’s needed is gender balance. On Monday, March 11, the Maui Police Department was called to assist Maui Community Correctional Center in quelling a “disturbance” caused by inmates who refused to follow directives to return to their cells, and instead started a fire. According to a statement released by the Hawai‘i Department of Public Safety, 42 inmates refused to follow the order, while 52 complied. The non-compliant inmates broke fire sprinklers and barricaded themselves within the module. Over the course of two hours, MPD and MCCC negotiated with and “secured” the inmates until the situation was declared contained. Hawai‘i DPS stated that no inmate injuries were reported, although significant damage was sustained within the modules. Following the assault of corrections officer Bert Sam Fong in October 2018 at the hands of an inmate (reportedly, Fong is still recovering from the attack), the incident is the latest sign that the chronically overcrowded MCCC may have reached its breaking point. In April of 2018, MauiTime reported on a similar, though less severe, incident where inmates organized more of a sit-in than a riot. “The inmates refused the order [to return to their cells] and said they wanted to express their frustration with the phone system, a damaged television in the common area of their module, and the absence of rice with some of their meals over the past few days,” DPS spokesperson Toni Schwartz explained at the time. In August, MCCC and DPS were fined for two items totalling $16,300 (the penalties were later mitigated to $8,150, Schwartz said) deemed “serious” by the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. The fines were related to the fire control system which has been an ongoing problem since 2015.

That same year, a DPS report stated that the 301-bed jail was operating with 478 inmates, or 58 percent more than its official capacity. Basically, it’s a powder keg exacerbated by pressures of overcrowding and failings to properly maintain and update the correctional center. If the incidents from the last year are any indication of where this is headed in the future, it’s clear that something must be done immediately – or the next fire could be the one that blows up the whole thing.

injuries sustained in the incident, and that Wong was released on $1,000 bail. Hours after the first report of the incident aired on Hawaii News Now (which identified the victim only as “she” and stated she feared retaliation from Wong due to his powerful position in the county), Mayor Mike Victorino released a statement that Wong had been placed on administrative leave. After repeated requests for clarification, the mayor’s Communications Office confirmed on March 12 that Wong’s leave is paid and with benefits. “I have zero tolerance for domestic abuse,” Victorino said in another statement released Monday. “Still, our justice system provides due process. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.” In the statement, Victorino identified First Deputy Corporation Counsel Edward Kushi as the interim manager of the Department of Corporation Counsel. Multiple inquiries to the mayor’s Communications Office from MauiTime regarding the length of Kushi’s interim role, the hiring of new staff to accommodate the personnel shortage, and factors that will be considered in the removal or reinstatement of Wong went unanswered as of press time. Wong, a nominee of Mayor Victorino, was recently approved by the council in a 5-4 vote to continue to serve as Corporation Counsel, a post he has held since being first appointed in 2011. The arrest sheds new light on some of the testimony received during his contentious confirmation process, in which Wong was accused of abusing power, losing his temper, and intimidation. “Several of us on the council had these concerns,” said Council Chair Kelly King, who voted to disapprove Wong during confirmation hearings. “Not necessarily about domestic violence against a partner, but about intimidation and potential retaliation, and if there was fairness in his office.” King added that she knows Wong has yet to be convicted of a crime, but main-

positions, but also our appointed positions. You didn’t see much gender balance in this first round of appointments. There are two women and the rest were men.” “I think that’s one of the things that has to happen to be a bigger shift in power, not just in politics, but in the administration.” In the short term, though, King said that she hopes there is a full investigation and all the facts are provided, given Wong’s position as Corporation Counsel and legal advisor to the county. King added that she heard her colleagues suggest that Wong should step down. “Given these allegations, I think that’s something he should really be thinking about. The mayor should be seriously thinking about that: How can [Wong] go back to being the director and there not be major doubts?” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @axelbeers

CHASSEN KOSI-CORTEZ NAMED MAUI’S YOUTH OF THE YEAR, AWARDED $2,500 SCHOLARSHIP Maui High School student Chassen KosiCortez has been named the Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, earning him a $2,500 scholarship from the Eugene & Ruth Freedman Family Foundation. Kosi-Cortez will travel to O‘ahu on March 29 to contend for the State of Hawai‘i Youth of the Year title and a $5,000 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. If Kosi-Cortez wins at the state competition, he will compete at the Regional Youth of the Year event for an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C. in September 2019 to compete for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable each year up to $100,000. Now in its 72nd year, the Youth of the Year

program honors the nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed, and inspire. The Youth of the Year honor is bestowed annually upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. Kosi-Cortez, 15, has been a Central Clubhouse member for seven years. He maintains a 4.0 GPA at Maui High School and enjoys studying math, fashion design, science, and chorus. Kosi-Cortez attributes his successful ranking promotion to the values he learned from the Club. “Chassen is a member who attends Club consistently,” said Stephen Bennett, director of operations at Boys & Girls Clubs Maui. “His positive attitude and pleasant personality are appreciated by his friends and the Club staff. We are very proud of Chassen for earning this well-deserved honor of Maui Youth of the Year.” Kosi-Cortez represented the Central Clubhouse on March 6 during the 2019 Eugene & Ruth Freedman Youth of the Year event held at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani. The four other candidates chosen to represent their Clubhouse were Tahiti Ahsam (Paukukalo Clubhouse), Naomi Farnsworth (Makawao Clubhouse), Lynnea Lopez (Lahaina Clubhouse), and Franco Melgar Martich (Haiku Clubhouse). The teens were judged based on their application packets that included three essays, their school grades, and letters of recommendation, as well as interviews with the panel of judges and a speech they presented during the Youth of the Year event. This year’s judges were Cassie Akina-Ancog, Shay Goodfellow, Wesley Lo, and Ian Manzano. All Maui candidates received scholarship funds made possible by the Eugene & Ruth Freedman Family Foundation. Their ongoing advocacy and generosity continues to change lives of Maui’s youth, according to Boys & Girls Clubs. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @axelbeers For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

U.S. Coast Guard Station Maui assisted members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in disentangling a humpback whale in Maui waters on March 6. The subadult mammal was freed of an estimated 200 feet of heavy gauge line by a team of trained responders off of Makena Beach in South Maui, according to a joint statement from Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, and U.S. Coast Guard. Representatives with the organizations responded to the situation after learning the entangled animal had a line through its mouth forming a bridle. The report of the entanglement came in at around 9:10am from a Maui Dive Shop vessel, Makakoa, and Coast Guard Station Maui swiftly launched a 45-foot response boat. By 10:40am, the Coast Guard crew arrived on the scene, assessed the animal and entanglement, and deployed a working line with a tracking beacon attached. “The team made several cuts, removing almost all the line, and greatly increased the animal’s chances of survival,” said Ed Lyman of Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. “However, a small amount of gear could not be pulled from the whale’s mouth and thus remains. The recovered gear will be analyzed towards determining its possible origins and trying to reduce entanglement threat in the future.” The sanctuary’s response vessel, Kohola, followed with the rest of the team and gear. In the interim, many vessels, including the Makakoa, Redline, Maui Magic, Bluewater Rafting, fishing vessel Piper, Maui Diamond II, and PacWhale Eco Adventure’s Ocean Explorer, assisted by monitoring the animal and relaying information while the response team was en route. “Kohola arrived soon after with the rest of the team and launched an inflatable boat. A team of responders in the inflatable approached the whale, grabbed the working line,

and pulled themselves up behind the animal,” said Lyman. “At this point, one line of the bridle was cut and untwisted, but the line was too deeply embedded in the mouth to pull free.” At 12:30pm, with seas building, another approach was made within feet of the whale’s tail to cut the other side of the bridle as far forward as possible. “The pair of cuts removed as much line as possible, along with all the trailing buoys,” Lyman said. “Only a small amount of gear in the whale’s mouth and trailing along its sides was left providing the animal with an excellent chance of surviving. This was a successful operation that involved the efforts of many – a team effort. Mahalo to all.” In the joint statement, experts advise mariners to keep a sharp lookout for whales in distress but recommend not to approach closely or attempt to assist them. For the animal’s protection and the safety of the responders, only trained and well-equipped responders are authorized under NOAA Fisheries’ Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program to help whales and other marine mammals. If any marine mammal is sighted in distress, the public is asked to maintain a 100-yard distance and call the NOAA 24-hour hotline at 1-888 256-9840. If unable to call, radio the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 and the report will be relayed. The public is reminded it is illegal to approach a humpback whale closer than 100 yards by any means at sea and 1,000 feet by aircraft.

animals to live in a shelter. MHS hopes to inform the community about what goes into the care of shelter dogs, and to find homes for a few of the participating pups. ”We are so excited about this new event and we appreciate our supporters willingness to help raise much needed funds as well as awareness for our shelter animals by staying in a kennel overnight,” said Jerleen Bryant, CEO of Maui Humane Society. “It fills our hearts to know how many people in the community care for our homeless animals and want to support the work that we are doing at the Maui Humane Society.” Each participant is being asked to raise a minimum of $1,500 for the event and fundraising is being done through the MHS Facebook page. Business sponsorships for the event are also welcome. To donate, or for more information about Maui Humane Society or the Spring Fling Slumber Party, please visit the Maui Humane Society website at Mauihumanesociety.org or call 808-877-3680 ext. 218.

Pastor Alph Lukau of Alleluia International Ministries in Johannesburg, South Africa, is facing lawsuits after a stunt in which he appeared to resurrect a dead man on Feb. 24. Sowetan News reported that a video of the incident shows Lukau placing his hands on the man’s stomach as he lay in the coffin, when suddenly the man, identified as Elliott, begins to gasp for air and sits up. “Can you see what happened?” Lukau exclaims in the video. “This man died since Friday, he was in the mortuary... Devil, I told you wherever I find you I will kick you.” Pastor Rochelle Kombou said the hearse driver heard noises coming from the coffin and ran away as soon as they arrived at the church. “I was screaming,” she said. “I saw his tongue moving... The man of God completed the miracle by praying because prayer is the key.” The lawsuits, meanwhile, stem from the misrepresentation of the situation to three funeral parlors, whose services were sought by church officials; a coffin was bought from one and the hearse was hired from another. Prince Mafu, who is representing the funeral homes, said the matter had been reported to the Jeppe police station for further investigation.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT On Feb. 13, Nina Harris of Kentucky told her husband, Allan, that she wanted tulips for Valentine’s Day. As she explains it: “He wasn’t paying attention. He just said, ‘Yes, I know.’ When I got up, I had my first cup of coffee, and he said, ‘Oh, your turnips are here.’ And I said, ‘Turnips?!’” Nina told WPVI TV. Allan’s story is slightly sweeter: “I... put the turnips in the bucket that says ‘I Love You’ on it,” he said. “I went in there, got her coffee – and here you go!” Allan, who admitted he wasn’t really listening when Nina requested tulips, later made it up to her by getting her the flowers AND candy and balloons.

Filipino medicine man Angelito Oreta, 55, has an unusual method of protecting himself and his home from thieves and attackers. He and his followers raid fresh graves near Manila to steal the kneecaps from corpses. Oreta uses a scalpel to remove the patella, then soaks the bone in coconut oil for several days to dissolve the skin. Once dried, the bones can be found scattered around his home or worn around his neck. “The benefit that the guardian angels from the patellas will bring is that they will help your livelihood,” Oreta explained to Metro News. “The kneecaps are used for protection. Or they also work as a shield.” Oreta gifts the bones to his trusted friends and followers.

Smartmouth Brewing Co. in Norfolk, Virginia, launched a new “magically ridiculous” beer on March 2: Saturday Morning, a limited-edition IPA – with marshmallows. Chris Neikirk, brewery spokesperson, told USA Today the beer is “brewed with in-house toasted marshmallows and bulk dehydrated marshmallow bits... It has a soft pillowy body with a slight cereal taste.” Smartmouth hopes the beer evokes “nostalgia in adults who remember when... Saturday mornings were a time that you sat around watching cartoons and playing games,” Neikirk added, while warning that the brewery is “not marketing to children.”

Silence of the Lambs, indeed. A Manchester, England, woman named Joan has a unique project in mind for a custom clothing designer. It seems Joan, 55, is anticipating having her leg amputated because of peripheral arterial disease, reported the Daily Mail, so she posted on Sewport.com, requesting help to “create something beautiful and useful” – a handbag, using her own skin. She has budgeted about $3,900 for the project, which she envisions as a “medium-sized handbag with a short strap and a section down the middle that will be made from my skin,” she explained in the post. “I know it’s a bit odd and gross... but it’s my leg, and I can’t bear the thought of it being left to rot somewhere.” There are no laws against her keeping the limb, although there is paperwork to fill out. Boris Hodakel, the founder of Sewport.com, reports that no designers have come forward yet to help with Joan’s request. ■

stays. Why, you say? The old filling station was the setting for the 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The Gas Station opened as a restaurant in 2016, serving barbecue and souvenir merchandise to film buffs. Manager Ben Hughes said the Coke machine in the movie is the same one that’s now in the restaurant, and they have a van parked outside that’s an exact replica of the one in the film. Now, he tells KVUE TV, fans can stay in one of four mini-cabins right behind the restaurant. But Hughes promises the staff won’t try to scare you: “We want to make sure that everybody that comes out has a good time... not just freakin’ out or anything like that.”

Detective Constable Claire Fitzpatrick is no shrinking violet, evidenced by the fact that she’s in danger of losing her job at the village police station in Bedwas, South Wales, England. The 44-year-old says her inappropriate language and habit of audibly breaking wind are just part of the “culture of banter” at the station, but she faces 25 counts of inappropriate behavior, including: farting outside her sergeant’s office, using the C-word with a suspect, and propositioning a junior officer (asking if he wanted an affair with a “fatter, ugly, older woman”). DC Fitzpatrick told Metro News that swearing is “just the nature of the place” and she had replaced the F-word with the C-word as her word of choice. However, she appeared to have regrets about her actions, calling them “stupid.”

idn’t you sea turtles get the memo? The United States Endangered Species List is literally the hospice of the animal kingdom! You got put on it a few years ago. So everyone prepared to say their goodbyes, gave you 15 feet or whatever, roped off the beach, worked on medicating your funny face fungus thing, and waited for you to follow the dodo into animal heaven. BUT YOU CAME BACK! All that silly crap worked! Now you line the beaches like you own the joint, hiding behind your federal protection, and repopulating like bunnies! What gives? The monk seals got the memo, they got put on the list, still declining at over 3 percent a year, and we all love seeing them, cuz anytime could be the last, kinda like a grandma or somethin. We are all super bored of you, you take up too much space on the beach, and you clutter the surfbreak. My Name is ‘Ōpūkaha ‘ia Actor and playwright Moses Goods tells the story of the first Hawaiian Christian, a figure both hailed and decried for bringing Christianity to Hawai‘i By Lantana Hoke

A

t the turn of the 18th century, a Hawaiian boy on the island of Hawai‘i was orphaned by kanaka warriors embroiled in a power struggle. They killed his parents and infant brother, but spared him. At 10 years old, he wasn’t a threat. Later, after studying under his uncle, a priest, he took to the seas. Though he never returned to his ancestral homeland, his legacy lives on in the islands today. Henry ‘Opukaha‘ia became a complex figure in Hawaiian history, both hailed and decried for being the first Hawaiian Christian. His travels left him in New Haven, Connecticut, where he ended up under the wing and in the home of the president of Yale, who taught him theology and secular subjects. He developed a deep desire to proselytize in his native land, which inspired the creation of the Foreign Mission School, whose purpose was to bring the Christian word to farflung lands. Before dying of typhus at age 26, ‘Opukaha‘ia began the first ever attempts at penning ‘olelo Hawai‘i and inspired the Sandwich Island Mission, which had profound effects on Hawai‘i.

200 years later, Moses Goods brings this story to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on March 15 in a one-man play he wrote and will perform in. Along with Po‘ai Lincoln, who will open the play with a discussion about music, Goods will tell the story of this significant, complex Hawaiian figure in “My Name is ‘Opukaha‘ia.” After the show, the performers will stay for an informal talkstory session with audience members. Goods, who is from Maui and based in Honolulu, is the founder and artistic director of ‘Inamona Theatre Company, an organization dedicated to reintroducing the native stories of Hawai‘i to the community. Part of Goods’ artistic mission is telling Hawaiian stories from a Hawaiian perspective. In this new play, he will play several roles to tell ‘Opukaha‘ia’s story, which is not traditionally how this story has been told. In ‘Opukaha‘ia’s official memoirs, penned by his New Haven colleagues, he is called “Obookiah,” with his journey portrayed as that of a “heathen,” idol-worshipping youth converted to a learned, Western man – a narrative, when read through a modern lens, with racist and xenophobic

tones. But a vital layer to the story is that ‘Opukaha‘ia is revered by many Hawaiian Christians. His remains have been re-interred at Kahikolu Church in Kona, and the third Sunday in February is a day of remembrance to honor this significant historical figure. It’s an important story to tell, and I got the chance to speak with Goods to hear his mana‘o about the power of theater to tell complex stories, his shy boyhood in Ha‘iku giving rise to his range as an actor, and his advice to aspiring playwrights and actors.

Q:

A:

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your creative roots.

I’m from Upcountry Maui; I’m from Ha‘iku originally. I’m a graduate of Maui High School. I did a little bit of drama at Maui High and took up theater again at the University of Hawai‘i. That was years ago. I’ve been a theater artist for almost two decades now. I focus most of my work on stories having to do with our history, our culture in Hawai‘i, or our ancestors or the historical figures in Hawai‘i.

Q:

What inspired that direction for you?

Q:

Are there a lot of Native Hawaiians in theater?

A:

For me, theater had been my way of connecting culturally. It’s my way of connecting with the story, with the history. I learn from what I do as a theater artist; that’s the way for me to connect with our stories, and then I’m able to get the stories out there to a larger audience.

A:

There haven’t been over the years, but recently there’s been an emergence of Native Hawaiian artists. There’s a lot of theater starting that’s happening completely in the Hawaiian language, which is a very exciting thing. Theater is not a traditional Hawaiian art form, but more and more people are starting to embrace theater and acting.

Q:

You have a whole foundation dedicated to theater in the arts. Can you tell me a little bit about ‘Inamona?

A:

‘Inamona is a theater company that is still kind of getting off the ground, and we’re about to do some things to move that forward. It’s dedicated to reintroducing the stories of Hawai‘i to the people of Hawai‘i. It’s a way of digging up stories that people don’t necessarily hear and a way of connecting the generations of today with the stories of our past.

Q:

Your last one-man play was about Duke Kahanamoku. What inspired this new play?

A:

In what I do, I kind of gravitate to the figures that had a huge impact on our islands, and I think Henry ‘Opukaha‘ia was one of the firsts in bridging the connection between Hawai‘i and the outside world. He was credited with bringing Christianity to Hawai‘i. I think what drew me to him was the fact that it’s an important story to tell from a Hawaiian perspective. To many Hawaiians, he’s a great hero, right? Because he represents Christianity and many Hawaiians are Christian. But to other Hawaiians, it kind of symbolizes that huge, drastic change that took place in our culture when this new religion was introduced and we, for a lack of a better term, lost who we are as a people spiritually because of this move toward Christianity. So it’s a difficult story to tell. And I think to me, I guess it’s kind of appealing because it is challenging. The challenge for me is to tell all sides of the story and not necessarily lean toward any one direction, anyone’s side, but really show who he is as a human. That’s where I came from.

Q:

What should people expect at the show itself?

A:

The show is going to be in two parts; my piece is the second half, so it’s only about 25 minutes or so. But the segment before that is going to be by another performer, Po‘ai Lincoln. She’s going to set the scene, in a way, by talking about music in Hawai‘i – the early forms of what music is in Hawai‘i – specifically the impact that Christianity had on the music of Hawai‘i, because that is directly connected to the story of Henry ‘Opukaha‘ia. And then I’ll come in with my story, with my play, at the end of it.

Q:

A:

A one-man play. What’s that like?

I guess I have become so used to doing one-man shows that it’s kind of my thing now, but there are challenges in one-man shows in that there’s no one else out there but me, so I can’t rely on anyone to give me the energy I need, or to bail me out if I make a mistake. So it’s all dependent on what I do as a performer. One thing that I tend to do with my one-man shows is that I include a lot of different characters. And so I’ll be playing several different characters in this show. I like doing that because it allows me to tell different perspectives of the same story, but you’re not just telling it from the point of view of the main character. There are other characters that come in and out. That’s kind of a strength of mine as an actor, is to go in and out of character.

Q:

Where do you get such range as an actor?

A:

Oh, good question. Probably just a lifetime of being an introverted kid that was always keeping to himself but always looking, and watching, and people watching. That’s what I was doing as that shy kid growing up. I guess I was just observing people around me and then recording that into my brain. That’s only thing I can think of that could explain how I’m able to go in and out of these different characters. That and it’s a lot of fun, too. I think a lot of people toy around with different voices that they use. For me, it’s an opportunity to delve in and become a different character.

Q:

If there are aspiring playwrights or performers, especially of Native Hawaiian ancestry, what advice would you have for them?

A:

My advice would be to reach out to those that you know are doing the work and make a connection with them. There’s a lot that we could offer in terms of choices that we’ve made, good and bad, that can help a young artist as they find their way through their own journey. Every journey’s going to be unique, but it’s helpful to reach out to o people that can offer a little bit of guididance. Don’t be shy, just reach out to these hesee people, whether Facebook, email, whatever hatevver – make that connection. Creating a comom-munity of young Native Hawaiian artists tistss is is a really important thing, and there’s no reason why we need to be completelyy sepseeparate in what we do. We can certainlyy conco onnect with each other.

Q:

responsibility as a Native Hawaiian artist, to tell these stories, embrace these stories, learn from these stories. Share them with others. I think it’s always going to be a part of what I do. I don’t think it’s going to be the extent of what I do. As most people in Hawai‘i, I’m mixed. I’m half Hawaiian, I’m also half black. I haven’t started to look at that so much in my work, and that’s actually a direction that I’ve been wanting to go in for a while now. So I think work from me is going to include making a connection between who I am as a Hawaiian and who I am as a black person.

Q:

A:

I feel like there is an untold story there. Do you think that artists always need to be personally connected to what they do? It seems like you have a lot of personal connection to the art you create.

That’s the art, right? It’s finding what is human in the characters. I’m definitely well connected to one human, and that’s myself. So I need to find these personal connections, find what makes these characters human and real people and not just characters from a book. They’re actually living, being

people. So the personal connection is essential to the work that I do.

Q:

Do you have anything that you want Maui residents to know about you, or the show, or any thing that you haven’t said that you want to express?

A:

I want to let people know that I do the work that I do because I love this work, but also because it is my responsibility as a Native Hawaiian artist to reach people through these stories, and to be that conduit between the kupuna, our ancestors, and the people of today. So as much as I’d love people to come and support me as an artist, and I love it when I come to Maui because I get wonderful support, I want to make it clear that what I’m doing is to serve the community, to serve our ancestors, to continue to make sure those connections are being made between the generation of today and the ancestors that I’m portraying on stage. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

You talked about good and bad choices. What are some good od d and bad choices you’ve made de e ass an artist?

A:

That’s hard to answer because some so ome of some of the good choices ar are re bad choices at the same time. I tend teend to just go for it, to just make things ha hapappen, which is a good and a bad thing. You g. Y ou dive right in and realize that maybe itt wa was as too soon, but at the same time you’ree gogo oing to learn a lot from going out there ree aand nd making it happen and learning from th the he mistakes. So yeah, one piece of advicee is to to just go for it.

Q:

So what’s next for you? What hatt stories do you want to tell? l? ?

Q:

Do you think you’ll always s focus on historical figures? s? ?

A:

There are a number of stories es I’d I’’d like to tell. I can’t give awayy too to oo much of certain projects that att II’m ’m m working on, but the next project I’m m working on has to do with the monnarchs of Hawai‘i in their younger days. daays. So I’ll say that.

A:

No, I don’t, but I think there’ss so o much there and I think that’s a huge part of my kuleana, my

community, and a great place to get a bite to eat. In fact, the name pub is short for public house, a home away from home. I sat with owners Chris Turquet and Mick Ryan, expats from the UK, to see what the heartbeat of the Kalama Village pub is all about. “Every establishment is built, I believe, on what comes out of the kitchen,” says Turquet. “We want to really remind and invite people to come out and try the food. Our chef is back there working hard; I feel like what Ricardo Salinas does is really a work of art: the presentation and everything else. This is not bar food.” Recently, they redesigned the menu and have a great new presentation. The new, modern look of the menus is easy to read and organized by starters, soup and salad, their specialty dishes (aka the “Dog’s Bollocks”), sandwiches, and sides. The hand

tweaked the menu but they were smart to stick with a lot of their fan favorites. “We changed a few things but we do not want to change our essentials,” says Turquet. We are still known for our bangers and mash, corned beef and cabbage, the pies – the pot pies are good sellers. When you go to the sandwiches the rueben is very popular. People come back for those.” There is one dish that Fowler recommended, that I have never heard of – their chicken milanese. This dish is a thin pounded white meat chicken cutlet, dredged in light breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. The Dog and Duck serves theirs with a parsley, garlic, and lemon gremolata that is to die for, along with their famous mashed potatoes and peas. It has quickly moved to the top of my most craved dish list; I cannot get enough of that cutlet and gremolata. ou don’t have to wait ‘til St. Paddy’s day to eat corned beef and cabbage. I recently learned this fact stopping by the Dog and Duck in the Kihei Kalama Village. Most of us know the Dog and Duck to be a great nightlife spot in Kihei’s Triangle for trivia, yum yum shots, DJs, and live music for the last 12 years, but you may not know their kitchen pumps out some of the best consistent comfort food hits in South Maui, serves a great breakfast on the weekends, and has a great late night menu too. In the UK, pubs are more than a place to drink a pint, they are a hub of activity in the

cut their fries, and make everything from scratch. The pub favorites are denoted with an Irish flag. The quality is incredible, and the prices are reasonable. “When you have that work of art, it’s job satisfaction,” says Turquet. “I always feel like it’s being a part of the scene. Everything is fresh; we cut all of our potatoes. Our chips and our mashed potatoes are made fresh daily. This is what we are about. There is no better taste than a real chip, french fry, whatever you want to call them. We don’t use frozen. Everything is made to order. The quality of food is really high.” Head bartender Brook Fowler takes a lot of pride in what they are doing at Dog and Duck, explaining that they are like a family, and the restaurants in the area all support each other. “Our goal is always to make this place like a piece of home,” says Turquet. “We are a part of the community. We have a soccer team out of here, we support softball out of here. We are

the village pub of Kalama Village. We have been working on a re-invention. A better menu, an appealing atmosphere for both locals and visitors – it’s really comfortable. The people that are looking for a great fish and chips, or prime rib, this is going to be the spot. We have a daily special board that goes up every day.” The Dog and Duck also added a couple of new food items to their repertoire. “The Duck’s Favorite Burger, and the Fowl Mouth Burger,” says Fowler. “Those are our two new dishes and they are doing really well. People really love that burger with the egg. They are yummy and we use Maui Cattle Company too. I always tell our guests that the beef is from Maui, and they really love that.” The Fowl Mouth is served with eggs over a Maui Cattle Company half-pound patty topped with tempura-style onion rings. Then a soft egg bread bun envelops the whole thing. Perfectly seasoned hand cut fries complete the meal. The Dog and Duck may have

weekends from at 8-11am: homemade corned beef and hash, eggs benedict, traditional Irish breakfast, pancakes, and omelets. You don’t have to wait in line for an excellent breakfast experience and hair of the dog specials. “Come in for breakfast and stay for a pint,” says Turquet. “We only do breakfast on the weekends but it is a really good breakfast. There is no line!” This Thursday the Dog and Duck kicks off their annual St. Patrick’s four-day weekend celebration starting with trivia night festivities. The pub also has a steady happy hour from 3-7pm daily with $5 yum yums, $3 well drinks, and a selection of $3 beers. Stop in and cozy up to their excellent food and drink at Kihei Kalama Village. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie stories, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

'Captain Marvel' Falls Short Brie Larson is better than this formulaic, behind-the-times film ★★★★★

Rated PG-13 / 124 Min.

ints of Marvel Cinematic Universe fatigue have been detectable for a few years but finally overwhelms their latest product. The lesser of the megablockbuster MCU films have a dull interchangeability, underwhelming villains, and an over-reliance on CGI spectacle. This is especially evident in Captain Marvel, which, unfortunately, is an iffy showcase for the talented Brie Larson. The first MCU installment with a female superhero lead falls considerably short of a certain Amazonian warrior adventure made two years ago. We meet Air Force pilot Carol Danvers (played by Larson) as she’s in a state of confusion – her origin and even whether she’s human are immediately put to question. However, Captain Marvel feels off from the start and not just because the story is presented in a fragmented, out-of-sequence manner. Larson fully invests in the title character but the role is beneath her. Take a look at her extraordinary work in Short Term 12 (directed by Maui’s own Destin Daniel Cretton) or her Oscar-winning performance in Room. Knowing what Larson is capable of and witnessing the committed but glib, nobrainer turn she gives here reminded me of Natalie Portman in the Star Wars prequels: This is another A+ actress giving C-grade work in a movie that asks very little of her. Despite dozens of fight scenes and Star Wars-like shoot-outs, nothing seems to be at stake. Once all the plot threads are revealed, it feels like a self-parody. When our hero beats up baddies while holding a Fonzie lunchbox as No Doubt blares on the soundtrack, it’s just incredibly silly. The inevitable comparison to the DC

Cue the on-the-nose 90s anthems

Comics equivalent is telling: The comic book movie this closely resembles isn’t Wonder Woman but Green Lantern, with a rich dollop of the gooey sentimentality left over from A Wrinkle in Time. As for the gender politics, this only demonstrates how far behind Marvel Entertainment is from the rest of the competition. The 2017 Wonder Woman provided a genuinely novel twist on comic book movie expectations and gender dynamics. In that film, leading man Chris Pine acted as the damsel in distress, on the sidelines while Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince took center stage – it was a wonderful role reversal and a truly progressive touch. In this movie, the sole novelty is that Danvers is a woman. Despite constant reminders of her gender (the soundtrack is full of on-the-nose ‘90s anthems) Captain Marvel mostly just beats up male assailants. That’s it. The one exception: the moment

LAHAINA FRIED SOUP ★ GARLIC NOODLE POHOLE SALAD ★ PORK BUNS ★ PAD THAI MISO SALMON ★ HAPA RAMEN SINGAPORE NOODLES ★ SAKE COCKTAILS

where Danvers informs an enemy she has nothing to prove. The line really lands. Otherwise, the plot is formulaic and old hat. Outside of the Marvel and DC comic book movie dominance, Atomic Blonde, the 2017 adaptation of Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s The Coldest City, starring Charlize Theron, provides the only recent female comic book character with any complexity, liberated identity, or sexual appetite. Further proof of Marvel’s behind-thetimes use of their female cast: In addition to Annette Bening’s truly embarrassing supporting role, MCU superstar Scarlett Johansson has just one scene, utters a few expository lines, then steps aside. Johansson, a sensational actress, has been benched for too much of this franchise. Her reported Black Widow solo movie, if it ever really arrives, had better be something special. Also on hand is Ben Mendelsohn, still

gobbling up every role Christoph Waltz used to get. Mendelsohn’s one facial expression is no longer menacing; can we please have a break from this actor? At least it’s visually interesting, though it falls short of evoking the surreal beauty of Doctor Strange. The very last scene after the end credits is the funniest Easter Egg in the MCU and the most successful joke in the movie. The “shared universe” approach to the MCU storytelling means this is a sequel to not only Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp but a middle chapter to dozens of films before and after. Captain Marvel offers potential for the ongoing title character but this movie is an MCU weak link. Considering how novel, refreshing, and thrilling Black Panther was exactly a year ago, this is a giant step down. I hope these movies eventually rise to Larson’s skill level. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Your intuition is so often spot-on that you’ve learned to trust it implicitly. This, however, can occasionally lead you far astray; although it’s frequently accurate, it’s hardly infallible. Treating it as such, especially this week, could get you into serious trouble, because for once you’re just plain wrong. I know, it’s shocking, isn’t it? Can you imagine how failing to give someone the benefit of doubt (since for whatever reason you don’t have any) would probably piss them off, seeing as how they actually deserve it? To prevent such a scenario, do the inconceivable: Ignore your gut for once, and trust your head instead.

Maui’s Best Yoga Studio 2017 & 2018

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

By now you should know how bad your shoes taste, having stuck your foot in your mouth many, many times. Tread carefully this week, for your toes are dancing precariously close to your lips. If you’re not absolutely sure that what you’re saying is exactly what you want to say, keep your naughty mouth shut. A slip of the tongue right now could haunt you for months. Find other, more careful and thoughtful ways to communicate whenever necessary. Write it down. Then, at least, you have a chance to edit your words before they condemn you to flossing with your shoelaces.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

If I gave you the chance to go back in time and change just one thing you’d done, most of you wouldn’t. That’s not because you have no regrets. It’s because the majority of you simply wouldn’t be able to choose which single thing you’d like to turn around. Think about it. It’s almost impossible, isn’t it? However, if you can come to any kind of clarity on the subject, there’s a window here. You can’t exactly go back in time and undo anything that’s already happened, but – if you act before the weekend hits – you have an amazingly good chance to go a long way towards “fixing” it.

WEEKS FOR

AL CI

You may be one of the lucky rams, who feels they’ve found their place in a community of friends and family. If you’re not, though, don’t freak. I know how you like knowing where you stand with people and feeling secure in their affections, and how awful it can be to wonder if people actually want you to stick around or not. In most cases, when you’re not quite getting the security and adoration you desire, you leave. You wander on, unsure, looking for something you can’t quite put your finger on. That would be a mistake here. What you’ve got is pretty good, even if it could use some tweaking. This week, don’t leave it – tweak it.

Which would you prefer? An annoying bug constantly buzzing in your ear, or not being able to hear at all? Unfortunately, your primary source of vital information right now happens to be someone who irritates the hell out of you (probably with good reason). Your choice is to shut them down, thereby cutting yourself off from where you want to go and the things you may need to know, or just dealing with it. If you do decide that you ultimately have to put the mosquito out of its misery, it’s better to do so sooner rather than later. If you do it this week, you may still have time to find another, less annoying conduit for the goodies you need.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Your Achilles’ Heel, my dear, is your deep resistance to compromise. You want it all or you don’t want any of it, and sadly, that means you don’t get any of it, much of the time. Aren’t you sick of doing without? Perhaps you’re finally ready to give the supposedly boring middle road a try. There are some very good deals on the table right now. Take another look at them. Although each of them lacks something you supposedly “need,” by taking advantage of at least a few of them, you could end up so far ahead of the game that you don’t even miss the pieces you were holding out for.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You thought you had it all figured out, didn’t you? You believed the issue sorted and settled. Only now, you’re not so sure. What if you were wrong? It’s unlikely, I know, but events this week are apt to plant doubts in your mind. As unsettling as it might be, second-guessing yourself right now would be a good thing. After all, you don’t want to have to live with potential mistakes (and their consequences) forever, do you? As for rectifying those errors, if you discover some – there’s no time like the present, my friend. Not everyone gets a chance to correct her mistakes. Here’s yours.

Just because you have your own private source of sunshine and happiness, you may have difficulty paying attention to or caring about how the weather is for everyone else. That’s understandable, but also very bad. Your own incredible good fortune should make you more solicitous about the wellbeing of others, not less. Hopefully your safety and joy means the parts of your mind usually devoted to securing those things can now be put to other uses – like noticing how miserable some of your friends are, and perhaps thinking of ways to help mitigate that misery. Quit daydreaming and counting your lucky stars and get to it, please.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Molting time! As you outgrow your metaphorical shell, it’s time to find a new one. That means you may feel exceptionally squishy and vulnerable this week, and long for someone solid and strong to stand between you and the world, who’ll take all the knocks you’ve got coming. Bad idea. Part of your personal growth is about getting out there and really embracing your whole life – the knocks along with the strokes. That may feel tricky right now, but it’s not. Without your emotional armor, you’re ill-suited to take hard hits, but you’re also more lightweight and fluid; you may be able to dodge them instead. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Stop thinking that everything you want lies behind a single door, and that there’s only one way through that door. That only perpetuates the illusion that as soon as you do the one thing that will score you the key to that door, all of life’s best experiences will lay down at your feet, ripe for the plunder. There is no door and certainly no key, and nothing as simple as winning the lottery or getting that job (or that nose or boob job) would open it in any case. The reality is that there are many doors (and windows) and many treasures lurking behind each one. I hope you’re wise enough by now to find that a comfort, not a let-down.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Something is better than nothing. In a week rife with compromises and virtually no ideal solutions, that has to be your mantra. Keep repeating it, as you encounter one sub-par situation after another, and just try hard to make the best of each one as it comes. You’re an excellent negotiator, and if you’re cunning and bold enough, you could still shift the balance from red to black, if only just barely. Whatever you do, don’t spend time feeling sorry for yourself. You can’t afford self-pity; it’s not included in what’s already a very tight budget. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

What you’ve got, no one’s buying, at least not this week. The market’s flooded with knock-offs, and people aren’t clued in enough to spend more for the real deal. Don’t get too down on yourself. They’ll come around eventually. In the meantime, chill out. This isn’t the time for a hard sell, or even advertisement. Your best bet is finding a handful of die-hard worshippers and relying on word-of-mouth from there. It may take time, but ultimately that’s all you’ll need. The people who need you will find you, and be ever so grateful and appreciative when they do.
