Witness Live Coral Reproduction at Maui Ocean Center MA‘ALAEA, HAWAI‘I - Friday, July 12th and Saturday, July 13th Maui Ocean Center will unveil the secret sex lives of Hawaii’s coral on July 12th and 13th. The Hawaiian Aquarium will be holding its annual rice coral spawning event. The sexual reproduction of Hawaii’s rice coral (Montipora capitata), is easily predictable and observable. Once a year, a few days after the new moon, many rice corals simultaneously broadcast sperm and egg bundles into the water in a mass spawning event. This summer, the biggest spawning is predicted to occur on the evenings of Friday, July 12th and Saturday, July 13th. “The spawning is truly magical to witness, and it’s even more exciting to be able to share the event, and to help the public see that corals are alive,” said Hannah Bernard, Maui Ocean Center education director, of the event at the Hawaiian Aquarium. “To see the guests’ eyes light up when the spawning occurs, especially the children, it is really inspiring.” When rice coral spawns, tiny bundles containing both egg and sperm are released and begin bubbling to the water’s surface where they start their exciting journey. After twenty to sixty minutes of floating around near the surface, the bundles start
to break apart and clouds of sperm are released. Like human reproduction, the coral sperm contacts the eggs an fertilization occurs. Rice coral is unusual in that the eggs are believed to contain microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which would provide energy to the developing larvae. Most reef-building corals contain the zooxanthellae, and the extra energy supplied by the algae from photosynthesis is what allows the coral to thrive. Around 10 percent of the eggs released in the spawning will develop into new coral polyps. This special event is open to the public. Coral reef biologists Dave Gulko of the state Division of Aquatic Resources and Pauline Fiene-Severns will conduct presentations that evening at Maui Ocean Center dispelling the mysteries of coral sex. The Hawaiian Aquarium will be open from 7:30pm to 9pm and the spawning is expected to occur in the outdoor exhibits. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (3-12 yrs.) and includes refreshments. For more information, please call (808) 270-7075 or (808) 270-7084. The Maui Ocean Center is centrally located in oceanfront Ma’alaea within min-

LettersTotheEditor Irresponsible recyclers Editor: Several times recently, I’ve heard the comment that it’s a waste of time to recycle on Maui using the community dropboxes because “they’re just hauled to the dump.” Unfortunately it is true that sometimes - but very rarely - a residential recycling dropbox must be taken to the dump for disposal. The reason has nothing to do with the company hauling and maintaining the dropboxes. It has to do with ignorant people in the community who take advantage of the availability of the drop-off locations and use the dropboxes for their own household garbage. When my home composting demo area was located next to the Upcountry dropbox site, I saw first-hand old car engines, car and marine batteries, and bags of household garbage stuffed into the bins. One of the worst cases was the carcass of a deer in the plastics bin. The haulers are required to look into the bins and if they see something suspicious, smelly, disgusting or otherwise not what should be in there, they must take the entire load to the dump. At first it seems like such a waste, ‘someone’ could simply remove a bag of garbage, right? Well, consider what happened at the private, for-profit company that does the plastic processing. Their
employee started sorting the load of plastic dumped on the loading dock. He saw a big black plastic bag and, thinking it was full of plastic bottles, opened it up to discover - a dead dog! From then on, the recyclers were not required to accept loads with obvious contamination; they found they couldn’t pay people enough to sort out the really disgusting garbage from the usable plastic items. Thanks to the untiring efforts of people at Community Work Day, the County of Maui Recycling Office, the trash haulers who offer recycling, our one and only curbside recycler - Maui Recycling Service, responsible residents and businesses, and my own organization, we have a 30-plus percent recycling rate on Maui. It’s never a ‘waste of time’ to do the right thing but it wastes all our time when irresponsible people do the wrong thing. Joy Webster, Executive Director Maui Recycling Group, Inc.,
WHY PLASTIC SHOULD BE AVOIDED How much single-use plastic packaging did you throw “away” today? I was amazed to learn that the “chasing arrows” seen on the bottom of many plastic items does NOT indicate that the material is recyclable. That number is placed on the item by the manufacturer to indicate the type of plastic used. According to the plastics industry, those arrows were added as a “catchy graphic” to frame the numerical code and were “never intended” to indicate that a container was recyclable or had recycled content. On Maui, only some of type 2 plastic (milk bottles and laundry soap type bottles) can be remade into a usable product (plastic lumber). All the other plastic types require shipment off-island and usually the bulk of it ends up in someone else’s landfill. In addition to the sheer bulk that single-use plastic packaging generates for our landfill, the manufacture and disposal of plastics creates toxins that persist in our environment. According to the EPA’s 1994 Toxic Release Inventory, the plastics industry annually contributes 14% of the national total of toxic releases to the atmosphere. Our waste stream on Maui is about 25% plastic by volume, according to a 1994 County of Maui study. This is creating a legacy of toxins for future generations here on the Valley Isle. Just say NO to single use plastic packaging. You do have a choice. You can choose glass and aluminum over plastic. Vote with your dollars for our community’s health. There is no such place as “away.” Bob Armantrout - Makawao

2+2=4, but can you spell it? There’s an interesting debate happening in the New York court system right now that could have implications for education systems nationwide: just how obligated is the government when it comes to educating the youths of this nation? In the days of long ago, school was strictly for the basics; teach the kids how to read, write, do a little arithmetic, etc. Whatever it took to get the farm processed on time. As years have gone by and technology has changed the landscape of the work force, teaching requirements have been forced to change as well. Or at least, that’s what many people say. With its recent ruling however, a New York state appeals court said that, fundamentally, nothing has changed. The court ruled that the schools were obligated by the state Constitution to prepare students for serving on a jury, reading campaign literature, and for being able to handle lowlevel jobs - nothing more (however, with some of the campaign literature out there today, you have to teach kids to do more than just read; you have to teach them to decipher code). A major crux of the problem is that the New York court equates this education with the 8th or 9th grade level and that has some people up in arms, claiming that the government is just providing the minimal amount and then giving up, thereby turning the kids over to a hostile environment. What’s important to remember here is that the government is required, by the constitution, to only give its citizens, youth included, a base-level of opportunity. Too often we confuse opportunity with entitlement or obligation. Once the opportunity, or foundation, is laid out, the design of the building and the quality of the roof you put over your head is up to you. Compared to many other countries, we should feel lucky that our government feels compelled to provide its citizens with even a good foundation of education. But if we, as citizens, expect the government to come along and erect the walls and roof for us as well, we better get used to living in government housing. There’s a big component of this argument that is being left out: the parents. What kind of obligation do they have? Sure, the job market has changed and kids are required to know more and more and they leave school, but you cannot legislate good study habits. The government is not required to make us smart, only to give us the tools to make ourselves smarter, and unless parents take an active, daily interest in how their child is realistically performing, there is nothing the government can do regardless of whether they give the child an 8th grade education or 12th grade. After talking to teacher friends of mine, it seems there is an exorbitant amount of parents who pretend that school is nothing more than a 12-year day-care. Their motto is; drop ‘em off and pick ‘em up, and what

they do in between is up to the teachers. One teacher friend of mine has stories of parents coming in and getting to the point of physically intimidation because their kid is getting bad grades and dammit, the teacher better change the grading method. With this kind of attitude, the government is up against a wall, and no court ruling is going to help it.
Baseball strikes out You’ve got to say one thing about professional baseball players and owners; they sure are stubborn. You’d think that after the strike during the 1996 season that cost the game the World Series for the first time since 1904, they’d do whatever it took to prevent the same thing from happening again, six years later. But no, this is professional baseball we’re talking about here. A game where an owner can pay a guy $25 million PER YEAR, and then turn around and complain about not being able to compete with big market teams because of lack of revenue. This is a sport where owners can go out and give half their franchise value to one single player and then turn around and demand that players accept a salary cap because they, the owners, can’t control their spending. Can you imagine if you walked into work one day and your boss said, “Sorry, but we’re going to have to place a limit on how much money you’re going to make here, even though company revenue will keep rising.” Not too many people would go for that. It’s easy to see that free agency and players’ agents have created this problem. An extra $10 million on top of a $200 million contract is not that much to a player, but to an agent it’s an extra $1 million in commission and he’ll convince his player to hold out for that little extra bit. The owners don’t want to pay it but they know that if they don’t, some other free-spending, knucklehead owner who thinks he can buy a championship will do just that. So he signs the player and salary expectations go up. Again. Word to the owners - you guys made it a long way in life. You own a major League baseball team. Show some discipline and sit down amongst yourselves to draw up your own spending cap regulations. That way, you’ll have some rules you’re all governed by equally and the players will be taken right out of the decision making process. It takes more than strictly money to get a championship anyways, just ask Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. Not only is the threat of a possible strike putting a sour taste in the fans’ mouths, but the debacle that was the All-Star game didn’t help. The game ended in the 11th at a 7-7 tie after the teams ran out of pitchers. This is quite understandable but seeing as how the roster number has been the same for years, you’d think they would have seen this coming. Next year, just hold a nine inning All-Star exhibition game and call it after that, no matter what the score is.

process, something that would be needed in the six months remaining on Kawano’s term. “We can’t delay while they learn,” said Arakawa. Council member Charmaine Tavarres said she figured there were still 100-200 items to consider by this year’s council, which she said would meet 11 times. “The person we choose must hit the ground running,” she said. Mateo had the support of Kawano’s family, and some council members hinted that Kawano had wanted Mateo to fill out the term if he couldn’t. Arakawa said he had spoken to Kawano during his illness and Kawano told him Mateo was qualified. Council member Bob Carroll also said Kawano favored Mateo to fill out the term if needed. Council member Jo Anne Johnson said she too had visited with Kawano while he was ill. “I asked him what do you want?” said Johnson. “He said, ‘I would prefer the people decide.’” Maui Sierra Club chair Daniel Grantham of Haiku said it wasn’t surprising the council appointed Mateo. “I have mixed feelings about it,” says

Grantham, who regularly volunteers his time and equipment to videotape public meetings for Akaku: Maui Community Television. “On the one hand, Danny was very familiar with the work of the council and knew Pat’s ideas and hopes. It is a way to follow through on Pat’s legacy,” says Grantham. But he says he would like to see the council hold three forums for the Molokai candidates to help offset the advantage he says Mateo will gain from being an incumbent and appearing regularly on Akaku television. “TV does give an advantage,” says Grantham, who says the Molokai forums should also be televised. Grantham points out the effort and money needed for Molokai candidates to travel and campaign on Maui. Since voters from the whole county vote on all nine council members, it is important for candidates to actively campaign here. “It’s not easy to make the trip here,” says Grantham. Sponsoring such forums would help balance any advantage Mateo may get from being the incumbent and would be good for the county, maintains Grantham. “It would further democracy,” he says.

The Maui County Council voted 7-1 to appoint Dennis “Danny” Mateo to fill out the remainder of the late Pat Kawano’s council term following public meetings on Molokai and Maui. Mateo, 50, has been executive assistant to Kawano for the last five years. Stacey Crivillo, Beverly Pauole-Moore and Mateo had emerged as front runners after the first public meeting on Molokai, said council member Alan Arakawa. In addition to those three, Michael Tancayo, DeGray Vanderbilt, Harriet Fukuoka, Walter Ritte Jr. and George Kahinu were considered. The eight prospective council members spoke before all eight council members during the well-attended Molokai meeting July 8. Council member Wayne Nishiki cast the sole dissenting vote during the July 9 Wailuku meeting where Mateo was appointed. Nishiki wanted to appoint someone who wasn’t going to run in the fall election for a regular, two-year term. He said an incumbent would have too much advantage in the campaign to fill the Molokai seat that Kawano had held since 1986. Fukuoka and Ritte had offered to fill out the remainder of Kawano’s term without seeking a full term this fall. The other six will run in the primary, with the two who get the most votes advancing to the general election. Council member Mike Molina said an incum-

A jury in New York City recently awarded $14.1 million to a 38-year-old woman who was badly maimed after she was hit by a subway train after lying down purposefully on an underground track in a probable suicide attempt. According to a New York Law Journal report summarized in a June New York Times story, the jury found that the train conductor, who had already slowed to 15 mph following a report of someone lying on the tracks, should have been going slower. (The judge lowered the award to $9.9 million after finding that it was 30 percent the woman’s fault.) [New York Times, 6-25-02] Scottish train driver Jacqueline Morrison, 29, filed a lawsuit in April against her employer, ScotRail, asking about $25,000 because she bruised a fingernail (which eventually fell off) when she went to adjust her seat in the cab. In April, a court in New South Wales, Australia, awarded a 20-year-old man the equivalent of $525,000 (U.S.) as a result of his being knocked out in a 1995 Narrandera High School fight that he apparently participated in willingly and in which he threw the first punches. Although he was medically cleared the next day, he said serious headaches and neurological problems have developed and that the last seven years have been physically and financially tough for him. And Tim and Donna Vogle filed a lawsuit against a restaurant in St. Joseph, Mo., in June, claiming that the owner slapped Mrs. Vogle in the head with a raw steak (after she complained that it was overdone) and that as a result, the couple’s sex life has been 75 percent diminished.

“Dozens” of money-making Web sites have recently been created by parents who post photos they have taken of their adolescent daughters (as young as age 6) frolicking in frilly clothing or swimwear, according to a May New York Daily News report. The sites are operated like pornography businesses, with some free teaser photos, but with $30-a-month “members” getting access to the photo archive and “personal” messages from the “model.” Some sites operate chat rooms where members discuss the girls in great detail. One “typical” site has 3,000 daily users, and another had 32 million page views in nine months. The parents say they are helping their daughters with modeling careers or with future college expenses. China’s youth and young adults are increasingly beyond the communist government’s control in their spending and leisure habits, according to a May dispatch in Toronto’s Globe and Mail. Although party leaders still appear on “most-admired” lists, so do Bill Gates and pop stars such as the Taiwanese boy band F4, and older Chinese complain that superficial, amoral kids know more lyrics of Michael Jackson than sayings of Mao Tse-tung. (The government recently banned an imported, 15-episode TV show starring F4, but had to back down because of the boys’ popularity among screaming teen-age girls and because of complaints by government TV stations that they needed the advertising revenue the show would bring in.)

Honoring the historic contributions of Hawaiian Musical Legends at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center Story: Nils Rosenblad 8
July 11, 2002
Cover Story
On July 19th, Kama’ainas, long-time residents, and visitors will have an opportunity to truly experience the incredible tradition of Hawaiian music at the first ever Ka Leo Hano Awards, being held at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. “Ka Leo Hano” means “the respected or honored voice,” and has been organized to both honor the great musicians who have carried the torch of Hawaiian music and culture into the new millennium, and to introduce this amazing art form to a broad new audience that may only be peripherally aware of the music and spirit that is so central to everything that is magical in Hawaii. The event will feature historical film clips, performances by some of Hawaii’s greatest talents, and most importantly, pure Aloha straight from the source – the Hawaiians themselves.
A True Cultural Event that Embodies the Soul of Hawaii Regardless of whether you were born here, moved here, or are just visiting, it is easy to get caught up in the geographical beauty of the islands – the towering volcanoes, the rainbows that stand out like neon against the tradewind clouds, the seemingly endless beaches and lush green valleys. It is extraordinary, to be sure, but this beauty is just the surface of something much deeper, and much more important. There are plenty of beautiful islands – even Ireland doesn’t look half bad on a sunny day – but how many of these islands were settled by people that crossed thousands of miles of ocean with only spirits and the night stars for a guide, and then formed a utopian society that existed in total harmony with nature and the land for over a thousand years. Polynesians first landed in Hawaii between 300 and 750 A.D. By the time Captain James Cook ‘discovered’ the islands in 1778, the Hawaiians had developed a complex and enlightened culture that included sophisticated conservation measures, a direct connection with their own history, and an efficient functioning hierarchy that provided everything from spiritual guidance and healing, to canoe building, farming, and the development and tending of fishponds.
place for the genesis of the musical form that is being celebrated by the Ka Leo Hano awards.
The Spirit of Aloha Perhaps the most compelling story about the Aloha that flows through this music is that of Queen Lili’uokalani, the last sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands, who was also a gifted pianist and is considered by many to be the greatest Hawaiian songwriter of all time. She ascended the throne in 1891, and in 1893, having gone against the grain of the American colonialists by attempting to restore some of the lost power of the monarchy, was overthrown by a coalition of these same colonialists (under the misnomer ‘Committee for Safety’), the support group Honolulu Rifles and around 200 U.S. troops, who had been called in by a U.S. minister. The final straw was when the Queen, responding to a smallpox epidemic among her people caused by migrant workers, closed the harbors. Despite the efforts of then-President Grover Cleveland, the committee led by Sanford Dole established a provisional government and petitioned the U.S. government for annexation. Dole’s forces put down a royalist revolt and jailed many of the Queen’s supporters, and in 1895, the Queen herself was put under house arrest, where she continued to write beautiful music. In 1898, the Hawaiian Islands were formally annexed to to the U.S., marking the end of many of Queen Lili’uokalani’s hopes and dreams for the nation of Hawai’i. Yet, in this same year, she com-
posed perhaps the most famous and beautiful Hawaiian song of all, “Aloha ‘Oe”, a haunting farewell inspired by watching two lovers part at Nu’uanu Pali, O’ahu. Aloha doesn’t run any deeper than that. And that is what Ka Leo Hano is really about – not just the music, the preservation of Hawaiian history and culture, and the honoring of great musicians, but something that could actually save us if we just gave it a chance - the spirit of Aloha. And what better time than now, with the planet in turmoil over a never-ending series of disasters that seem to be sapping the will of humanity. We need to be reminded of how things could be, by a musical form that draws directly from the sounds and harmonies of nature. We need someone to show us that there is a better way than the daily ratrace, that the beauty is right here in front of us if we’d just slow down long enough and open our eyes wide enough to see it. The musicians being honored at the Ka Leo Hano awards are a direct link to this great tradition, and embody this spirit. Through their eyes and art, and through that of the younger musicians picking up the torch, even the most jaded among us will be able to catch a glimpse of the truth that is always present behind the veil of commerce, agribusiness, real estate and who knows what else that keeps us so busy we barely have time to spend any real time with our Ohana - much less go to the beach, commune with the spirits, hike through the crater, study the night sky, or any of the myriad other things that are somehow forgotten when European civilization imposes its will.
The tradition of Hawaiian song (‘Mele’ or chanting) and dance (‘Hula’) goes back to the dawn of the culture, where poetry, movement and rhythm communicated the Hawaiian history during sacred ceremonies. When the first missionaries arrived in 1820, they were shocked and dismayed by what they considered ‘lewd and lascivious’ behavior, and Hula was for all intents and purposes banned for over 50 years. David Kalakaua became King in 1874, and, convinced that Hula was essential to the survival of the Hawaiian culture, spearheaded an effort to bring it all back. In the meantime, the Hawaiians had absorbed western harmony through singing hymns in the churches, and had inherited first pianos, then guitars and the instrument that would come to be called the ukulele by the Paniolos (cowboys brought from Portugal and other countries by the colonial landholders). At this point, all the pieces were in

The Brothers Cazimero
The event’s board of directors, comprised of industry icons including two grammy winners and the mayor, began planning, researching and organizing a year ago. Ballots have been sent to members of the Hawaiian music industry, and they have risen to the task of selecting the most outstanding performers (who must have had at least 25 years in the music industry since their first albums release and have been a Hawaiian resident at that time) in four categories. In addition, there is the Ka Lei Hiwa (Choice Lei) award, where the public will get to choose their favorite recording artist from a list of 12 possible inductees. For 2002, the awards and their recipients are as follows:
14 oz. Prime Rib Tuesdays & Wednesdays $22
1 1/4 lbs. Kona Maine Lobster Every Sunday Night $22 Live JAZZ Monday & Tuesday 5:30-8:30pm featuring: Eve Moffett, Gene Argel & Doug White

She speaks Hawaiian, has perhaps the largest repertoire of traditional Hawaiian songs, and has contributed greatly to keeping Hawaiian music alive for the past 50 years. ‘Apapane Award (Group/Duo Vocalist – The Brothers Cazimero – the Brothers are visionary talents who emerged from the Hawaiian Renaissance movement to largely define contemporary Hawaiian music. Their shows draw heavily on tradition, incorporating chants and hulas, yet also explore new forms and styles. ‘I’iwi Award (Producer/Songwriter) – Jack De Mello – Jack is a songwriter, producer, and founder of Music of Polynesia, which became one of Hawaii’s most important record labels. His contribution to the music is immeasurable, including recording nearly 500 Hawaiian songs, discovering and producing a new generation of Hawaiian talent, and even scoring music for T.V. programs (The Flintstones and the Jetsons to name a few). Ka Lei Hiwa – to be announced the night of the event. Each recipient will have their life and music featured in a multi-media presentation, which will include film clips, Halau performances, stories, and of course music, music, music. And what a night of music it is going to be – the schedule reads like a who’s who of everybody you ever wanted to see in Hawaii.

The Incomparable George Winston At The Maui Arts & Cultural Center – Friday, July 12, 7:30 pm One of today’s most popular folk pianists, George Winston, will be returning to the Castle Theater stage at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Friday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. Inspired by R&B, jazz, blues and rock, Winston began playing organ and electric piano in 1967. In 1971, after hearing records by the legendary stride (swing) pianists Thomas “Fats” Waller and the late Teddy Wilson, he switched to the acoustic piano. At that time he began working on his own styles of instrumental music on solo piano, putting together songs of his own and arranging other pieces. In 1972, he recorded his first solo piano album, entitled Ballads and Blues 1972. The Grammy Award-winning Winston derives much of his inspiration from the natural beauty of Montana, his home state. His newest album, Plains , released in 1999, is a mix of evocative sound pieces painted with the colors of music. “I never compose by intent ever,” he says of the creative process. “Sometimes it’s just good to let it flow, don’t think about it too much. But if something doesn’t come with a picture or a feeling … I lose interest.” Winston’s love of Hawaiian slack key guitar music led him to found Dancing Cat Productions, a record label devoted to the art of Hawaiian slack key guitar. In 1985, he began recording Hawaiian slack key guitar masters such as Keola Beamer, the late Sonny Chillingworth, Led Ka`apana, George Kuo and George Kahumoku Jr. “I started playing guitar in the ‘80’s. It wasn’t doing much for me until I heard the slack key. It reminded me so much of Montana. Music is great because it’s not linear at all. Whatever you imagine it is, it is.” Fans of George Winston can look forward to his upcoming record, a planned disc of dance instrumentals featuring an

eclectic mix of songs that broaden his musical palette. “You have to do your own thing. Individuality is all there really is. To me, the musician really is his own genre. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones may be considered rock, but they don’t really resemble each other. Folk piano is what I came up with (to be different). It all comes down to what music you like, what nourish es you, what takes you somewhere.” Currently, Winston keeps a constant touring schedule, doing upwards of 100 solo piano concert dates per year in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. Winston returns to Maui Friday, July 12 for an evening of great piano music and slack-key guitar at 7:30 p.m. Pre-show festivities begin at 5:30 pm in Yokouchi Founders’ Court, with food by Saigon Café. Tickets to this evening of beautiful sounds are $25, $20, $10, and special prices for children 12 and under. Stella Blues Café
Where People and Food of Good Taste Come Together When you are away from home its hard to find those savory homecooked meals that your stomach and body long for. That’s what makes them so good. But if you find yourself away from home in North Kihei you can head over to Stella Blues Café for a meal that is as close to home as it gets. Chances are the recipe is an inspiration from owner and operator Kale Emmit’s mother. Best known for their popular breakfast and lunch fare, Stella Blues also does a wonderful dinner full of daily specials. The focus of this family run business has been to offer a wide variety of healthy quality food in a casual homestyle setting. Named after a Grateful Dead song, Stella Blue’s glorifies its namesake with memorabilia inside the restaurant. Whether you are a Grateful Dead fan or not you will find something on the menu to enjoy. Their menu features just about everything you would want to eat. An amazing breakfast lineup exists of eggs pancakes, French toast, omelettes, bagels, cereals, fruits and all of the fixings. Breakfast is served from 8am to 11am but with late risers in mind will serve till 2pm on Sunday. Lunch is a smorgasborg of sandwiches, soups, salads, and grilled sandwiches served all day. All sandwiches come with chips and pickles and substitutions are no problem. The staff at Stella’s are happy to make it how you like it. Keeping their vegetarian customers in mind, Stella’s has a vegetarian section in the menu with taro burgers, grilled veggie sandwiches and tofu selections throughout. Evening meals include a side salad and bread to start with, and a choice of baked potato or rice. The salads are a generous portion of Kula greens served with homemade dressing. I ended up going for the ribs, and the huge full rack showed up with enough for two. The ribs fell off the bone, tender and sweet. You can also add grilled shrimp to most dinners for $6.99 more. The fresh ono special I tried was just as good. Served breaded with potato, fresh vegetables, rice pilaf, and a savory sauce. As an appetizer I started with their Maui Style artichoke and it was served with a wonderful mango aioli. There is a list of specials each night, served after 5pm, don’t miss out on trying these dishes. There is a substitute for a home cooked meal, and it’s Stella Blues Café in Kihei. The Crocodile Hunter Collision Course
Steve Irwin Gives Euphoric Lessons In Ausie Wildlife – Two Stars There’s just something amusing about watching a grown man with more energy than a room full of 9-year-old boys jumping on top of a 12-foot crocodile to wrangle the reptilian monster into a rowboat. Such is the joy of this Australian wildlife extravaganza featuring reality TV show personality and Zoo operator Steve Irwin (“Doctor Dolittle 2”). Director/writer/producer John Stainton splits the action between a loose secondary narrative about a couple of bumbling CIA agents searching the badlands of Australia for a satellite’s missing black box, and Irwin’s direct-to-camera evangelizing about the exotic animals he encounters. Giant crocodiles, venomous snakes, bird eating spiders, and kangaroos all get loving attention and voluminous verbal description by Irwin, who travels around the Australian outback with his well-matched wife Terri searching for a certain endangered “saltie” (crocodile) to relocate to safer waters. Admittedly there isn’t much holding the movie together, save the exuberant delivery of wildlife aficionado Steve Irwin, whose infectious love of Australia’s wildlife is divulged with a nonstop use of Ausie slang. When Irwin belts out “crikey!” for the 20th
time, it starts to sound like the greatest praise a person could ever bestow on an event. As Irwin gives brief snapshots into his childhood, it becomes clear that he was a boy who grew up mucking around in the dirt, mud, and waters of Australia, fascinated by every living creature, and just never stopped mucking. Irwin’s agreeable working relationship with his same-minded wife Terri provides chipper ballast to the potentially dangerous encounters with wild animals that the duo encounters. Irwin’s obvious proclivity for sensationalizing every minute detail about the animals he discovers is nonetheless endearing because he’s so sincerely consumed with celebrating nature’s beauty, and with letting kids know that this is not stuff they should run into the wild and do themselves. When Irwin gingerly handles a deadly King Brown snake while waxing poetic about the reptile’s magnificence, he makes sure to keep its head far away from his body as Terri brings a special capture bag to transport the potential road kill. It’s certain that for all of his expertise at handling wild creatures, Irwin has been

bitten, stung, and scarred many times over. Like watching divers swim among sharks, there is a primal satisfaction in seeing a man lasso the snout of a wild crocodile and tie it’s toothy jaws shut, even if he has to suffer similar danger when the time comes to cut the restraining ropes free. Irwin wasn’t allowed to read the script outline for the movie before or even during shooting, thereby leaving his extemporaneous editorializing largely free from the burden of the silly CIA action subplot that couches Irwin and his wife as possible international spies. “The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course” is a half overblown excuse to put animal conservationists Steve and Terri Irwin on the big screen with the animals and Australian outback that they adore. As a boy Steve Irwin helped his father Bob Irwin (founder of Australia Zoo) rescue and relocate croco-

diles in the rivers of North Queensland before volunteering his services to the Queensland Government’s rogue crocodile program. His unusually high success rate for single-handedly catching crocodiles distinguished him as a crocodile hunter to be reckoned with. For the younger croc-spying audiences to which the film is geared toward the movie is an opportunity for an amusing introduction to some fairly frightening creatures by a daring wildlife crusader with a comedian’s comic delivery. It may not be the stuff of great narrative cinema, but it is an unadulterated summer movie for kids to escape the heat and go on a momentary Australian vacation. Magda Szubanksi (“Babe”) adds a comic touch to the movie as Brozzie Drewett, a local shotgun wielding crocodile hunter in her own right.

MovieCapsules Maui Film Festival’S Candlelight cafÉ & cinema Wednesday, July 17th MONSOON WEDDING - This colorful, joyous and yet poignant film by Indian director Mira Nair (“Kama Sutra”) about a young Indian woman who’s giving up her married lover and agreeing to traditional nuptials has a graceful buoyancy that doesn’t desert even as the generational challenges between the India of old and of today play out. “The old-world-meets-new mesh is incarnated in the movie’s soundtrack, a joyful effusion of disco Bollywood that, by the end of “Monsoon Wedding,” sent my spirit soaring out of the theater” (Entertainment Weekly). forming into a basketball wiz able to compete on a professional level despite his size. He soon gets his chance to join an actual NBA team (well, sort of... it’s a fictional NBA team called the Knights; Chestnut plays one of Wow’s teammates). Juwanna Mann - Comedy (PG-13) - When a bad-boy ballplayer (Miguel A. Nunez Jr.) gets booted out of professional basketball, he wants so much to return to the game that he disguises himself as female all-star “Juwanna Mann” and joins the Women’s Basketball League. Men In Black II - (PG13) Sci-Fi - While investigating a seemingly routine crime, Agent J (Will Smith) uncovers a diabolical plot masterminded by Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle), an evil Kylothian monster that disguises itself as a sexy lingerie model. When Serleena takes the entire MIB building hostage, there is only one person left for J to turn to — his
cousin Nikki (Gia Carides), Toula is rather homely in appearance, and never hears the end about not being married with kids, a point that constantly worries Gus who strongly believes that Greek women should marry Greek men, have Greek babies and feed both until they day they die. Toula wants something more out of life, but is resigned to the fact that things will probably never change. She’s met Ian Miller (John Corbett), a non-Greek teacher, and fallen in love with him, but fears that her strong family heritage will ultimately undermine their relationship. Ian thinks that’s nonsense, but Toula tries to keep their relationship secret from everyone. Word eventually gets out, however, and Ian finds himself meeting Toula’s boisterous family, while she gets to meet his far more reserved parents, Rodney (Bruce Gray) and Hayley (Fiona Reid). The two eventually agree to marry, and must contend with how their families react to their relation-
New This Week The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course - (PG) Action - Aussie adventurer Steve Irwin - a.k.a. The Crocodile Hunter - has avoided the death-roll and nabbed another feisty croc, hoping to save it from poachers. What Steve doesn’t know is that the crocodile has innocently swallowed a top secret U.S. satellite beacon, and the poachers are actually American special agents sent to retrieve it. Crikey! In the Outback and through the bush with his wife Terri’s ever-present commentary ringing out over the countryside (“That was a close one, Steve!”), the Crocodile Hunter is out to save the gorgeous croc and relocate him. It won’t be easy, but if he can handle bird-eating spiders and venomous snakes without getting bitten, gunwielding agents shouldn’t be too much of a problem. It’s a little beauty! Halloween: Resurrection - R - Thriller - He’s back for more...When a group of teens win a contest to spend a night in Michael Myers’ childhood home to be broadcast live on the internet, they belive they are in for a little fun and some free publicity. But, things go frightfully wrong and the game turns into a struggle to make it out of the house alive. In the follow-up to 1998’s Halloween: H20, Michael Myers returns yet again in this thriller. The cast brings back Jamie Lee Curtis, and also features rapper Busta Rhymes, Sean Patrick Thomas (Save the Last Dance), Tyra Banks and Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie, American Pie 2). Reign of Fire - (PG-13) Action - In present-day London, 12-year-old Quinn inadvertently wakes an enormous fire-breathing dragon from its centurieslong slumber. Twenty years later, much of the world has been scarred by the beast and its offspring. The dragons are extremely intelligent, highly evolved, and they don’t like sharing the planet. As a fire chief, Quinn (Christian Bale) is responsible for warding off the beasts and keeping a small community alive as they eke out a meager existence. Into their midst comes a hotshot American,Van Zan (Matthew Mcconaughey), who says he has a way to kill the beasts and save mankind. “Reign of Fire” fuses a medieval past with a post-apocalyptic future in this exciting tale of adventure and survival. Road to Perdition - Drama (R) - Tom Hanks stars as Michael Sullivan, a hit man for an Irish gang in the Depression-era Midwest. When his work crosses into his private life, leading to the death of his beloved wife and son, Sullivan and his surviving son set out on a journey of revenge and self-discovery.
A dragon with a 300-foot wide wingspan and its offspring fly high over the ruins of London, having burnt Big Ben and Parliament to ash in Reign of Fire former partner, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), who is now a drone in another large government office, the U.S. Postal Service, and prefers simple pleasures like his wife’s cookies over standoffs with mammoth alien insects. Minority Report - Sci-Fi Thriller - (PG-13) Based on a story by famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, MINORITY REPORT is an action-detective thriller set in Washington D.C. in 2054, where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crime. Tom Cruise plays the head of this Precrime unit and is himself accused of the future murder of a man he hasn’t even met. MR. DEEDS - Comedy (PG-13) - Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) is a sweet, lovable guy leading a simple but happy life in the tiny hamlet of Mandrake Falls, New Hampshire. Deeds is admired by the locals who crowd into his pizzeria to hear him recite his offbeat (but hilarious) greeting card poetry. Life is good at the small town restaurant until two corporate fancy execs bring news that Deeds is about to be rolling in a different kind of dough. A long lost relative has left him an inheritance of 40 billion dollars along with the largest media company in the world, a football team, a basketball team, and a private helicopter ready to whisk him off to corporate America. Deeds ultimately discovers what life is really all about and has to prove that money changes everything... but not everyone. My Big Fat Greek Wedding - (PG) - Romantic Comedy - Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) is an unmarried 30-yearold Greek woman who works with her brother Nick (Louis Mandylor) at the family restaurant, Dancing Zorba’s, run by their parents, Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan). AKAKU to show Surfrider Maui’s film Save Ma’alaea: A Cry For Help
The Surfrider Foundation, Maui Chapter’s documentary film, “Save Ma’alaea: A Cry For Help,” will be shown on AKAKU Maui Community Television Channel 53 as follows: 6:25 p.m., Tuesday, July 9 7:25 p.m., Sunday, July 21 7:30 a.m., Monday, July 22 and 10 p.m., Wednesday, July 24 The Akaku showings follow two Maui remieres of the documentary film, the first on p March 26 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, followed by a March 29 showing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Lahaina. “Save Ma’alaea” A Cry For Help” was produced by Maui Chapter Vice Chair Lucienne DeNaie with grant funding, and directed by Mike Waltze of Mike Waltze Productions, with the script researched and written by Diana Haecker. To raise awareness of the Ma’alaea Harbor expansion issue, the Surfrider Foundation national office in San Clemente, California sent copies to all Surfrider chapters to be shown at chapter meetings across the county and internationally. Locally it was distributed Maui high school
science departments, and is available to individuals and community groups by request. The Federal Environmental Impact Statement, due to be released soon, will trigger public hearings 30 days later, at which time the public will be invited to offer testimony. The EIS is expected to present mitigations to the adverse impacts identified in the State EIS released a few summers ago. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to select one of eight alternative harbor expan sion plans. The State EIS selected an alterna tive that would destroy the surf site known as Off the Wall, which may also cause damage to the take off zone at the world-famous surf spot known as Freight Trains. In addition to causing damage to the surf sites at Ma’alaea, the Surfrider Foundation rejects this alternative because it does not adequately address surge problems from south east swells, and because it calls for doubling the existing harbor size, which would destroy coral reef systems and cause adverse impacts to the federally protected Humpback whales and green sea turtles. Surfrider Maui is strategizing a response that includes forming a political action arm
to get candidates for elected office on the record as to their position on the harbor expansion issue. It hopes to educate and persuade candidates that, while Ma’alaea Harbor requires renovations, Freight Train and Off the Wall, it fails to consider detri ments to whale and turtle habitats, the cul tural resource, coral reef system, and effects to near shore water quality. Surfrider acknowledges that the exist ing harbor entrance is problematic, in that the vessels are damaged during southeast swells, but that does not necessarily mean the USACE should expand the footprint of the harbor and take out coral reef systems. The boat capacity can be doubled with Alternative Six - which calls for needed harbor renovations and the addition of approximately 100 boat docks or slips inside the existing harbor footprint. Surfrider Maui is in the process of identifying stakeholders such as condo owners, commercial and pleasure boaters. Those interested in making their positions known are welcome to contact the chapter at the numbers below, or sending email to maui@surfrider.org.
In May, Maui Chapter representatives met with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Northwest Region Wet lands Manager Tim Vendeliski and Honolulu EPA representative Wendy Wiltsie, PhD. for an onsite tour and discus sion of concerns. The Maui Chapter hopes to be instru mental in negotiating a plan that will be acceptable to all stakeholders without hav ing to initiate a lawsuit. The Maui Chapter received a nation al award from the Surfrider Foundation National Office in the Environmental Out reach category for successfully implement ing its Blue Water Task Force program. The BWTF on Maui utilized surf club members, students and faculty from local high schools and middle schools, and senior citizens to test near shore waters for bacteria. For more information on the Surfrider Foundation, Maui Chapter, contact Maui Chapter Chairperson Jan Roberson at 5752716. For information on the Ma’alaea Harbor expansion issue, contact Lucienne DeNaie at 572-8331.

of land there years ago, has even more connection to the venue than most. “There’s so many good stops now on the ASP world tour and the way we’ve had swell the last few months is tremendous,” explained Egan. “Hopefully it can keep going when we are in J-Bay and keep up the incredible events. I love the place and won a block of land there in the Dream Sequence a lot of years ago, and have kept it. It’s a special place for me.” The trials will be staged on the opening day of the Billabong Pro with the top two finishers receiving wildcards into the country’s most prestigious surfing event.

ASP Int’l (Monday, July 8) The world’s top 46 rated surfers are making their way to Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, for the next stop on the 2002 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT). Home of the legendary ‘Supertubes’ surf break; the $250,000 Billabong Pro is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. The Billabong Pro has an 11-day waiting period to ensure optimum conditions for the four full days required. The fifth of 12 WCT events on what has been dubbed the ‘Dream Tour’ by surfers, media, and general public for the exotic venues and quality surf breaks it visits. After phenomenal waves during the during the opening two WCT’s in Australia, and on the reefs of Tahiti and Fiji, all attention will be on the swell charts surrounding Jeffreys Bay in the hope great surf continues for another epic showdown. Current ratings leader Andy Irons (HI) holds a commanding position courtesy of his back-to-back victories at Bells Beach Australia, and then at Teahupoo, Tahiti. The Hawaiian, who will celebrate his 24th birthday during the Billabong Pro, is more than
600 points ahead of Florida’s Cory Lopez (25), who in turn is only 70 points ahead of older brother Shea (28). “I’m really looking forward to going to J-Bay,” explained Irons. “I’ve ordered a lot of
short boards and worked with (shaper) Eric Arakawa on making some good point boards. I’ve been training at home and getting psyched and recharged. “J-Bay is a world class break for sure,” he added. “The waters a little cold for my taste, but other than that it’s a really good right. Super high performance, long and perfect.” Veteran campaigner Luke Egan (32), a permanent fixture on the WCT since it was introduced in 1992, is Australia’s highest rated surfer in fourth spot. He’s followed by reigning world champ C.J. Hobgood (22), another of the Floridian contingent that have made such an impact in the top echelons of the sport in the last decade. Egan, a sentimental favourite amongst the locals at J-Bay since winning a block

Bride and Doom I’m a 31-year-old woman in a yearlong relationship with a wonderful 43-year-old divorced man who doesn’t think he ever wants to marry again. He’s content to “date exclusively”...ad infinitum — meaning that neither of us sees or sleeps with anyone else. He also wants to come and go as he pleases. He knows I’m there when he wants me, yet he demands his unconditional freedom! He also thinks “I love you” is overused. I agree, but I still need to hear it more often than he’s willing to say it (daily or twice a week instead of once a month). Apart from his “my way” approach to commitment, I have no complaints: He’s sweet, sensitive, and validates my feelings even when he disagrees with me. This makes him hard to leave. But, does it make sense to stay if we seem to have no future beyond what currently exists? — Out On A Limbo There are times when you could really use a mercy flirt from one of your coworkers — like after your $300 “Day Of Beauty” backfires into six months of ugly. Unfortunately, these days, even a mercy flirt can get a person clapped in irons for sexual harassment. There is one workplace where flattery still flies fast and furious: the airline check-in counter. There, scamsters hoping to transform coach-fare tickets into first-class seats are sure to note to the attendant, “You must be a model!” and “Hey...don’t I recognize you from primetime television?” — even if said attendant closely resembles an aging Yoda. Talk is cheap (free, even, for those more concerned with extra leg room than adequate dignity). Your boyfriend understands this. That’s why he doesn’t chirp “I love you” on the hour and the half-hour, like a big cuckoo clock. You claim you’re there with him on this, then you propose an “I love you” quota in response. Don’t you get that it isn’t whether your boyfriend tells you he loves you, but whether he shows it that matters? Apparently, this idea is as hard for you to cram into Barbie’s Dream House as his notion that a relationship shouldn’t function like prison camp with better drapes. So, he isn’t willing to apply to the parole board every time he feels like going to the corner store. So, you’re always around when he wants you. It’s not like he has you chained to a stake in the shed. Maybe you’d be less upset about him doing his thing if your thing involved more than sitting around waiting for him to finish his. Maybe then you could have a relationship that’s structured like a friendship — seeing someone because you have fun with them, not because you’re under orders from the warden to have drinks with them every Tuesday night. Like many people, you confuse love with a major appliance purchase. True, you can sometimes get a warranty on a relationship — it’s called marriage. Unfortunately, if your marriage stops working, there’s no
provision for a guy in coveralls to pick up your husband and leave a new refrigerator in his place. If you’re too uneasy about your uncertain future to enjoy your present, you should probably put your boyfriend out on the curb. It shouldn’t take you more than a week to find a partner who’s everything he isn’t: content to hop around a gilded cage telling you he loves you over and over again...’til death do you part. There’s a special name for a partner like this — I believe they spell it P-A-R-R-O-T.
Molar Opposites I’m a happily married woman. This weekend, at a surprise birthday party in a hotel suite, my husband and I were drinking and having fun with some friends. When I ran into a married male friend in the hall, he asked me to help him carry wine from his room to the party room. Once inside, he grabbed me and kissed me. I froze, then ran out. Why would he do this? What should I do? — Chumped Why would he kiss you? Let’s see ...maybe he’s a dentist with the ears of a German shepherd — pointy little furry things just this side of bionic —and, as you were walking down the hall, he thought he detected the click of a loose crown. Naturally, he didn’t want to say anything without thoroughly exploring your bridgework in the privacy of his room. Sound good to you? At least it’s more colorful than “He was drunk, bored with his marriage, and wanted to see if you’d run around on your husband.” What should you do next? Nothing. You probably told him everything he needs to know by scurrying out of the room; namely, the answer to “Would you mind following me into this dark closet and helping me look for my drill?” (c)2002, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. On the 13th, Mars moves into Leo for six weeks, bringing you the ease of the fire expression so core to your nature, this time with a dramatic flair. Continue to seek a balance in your profession between the polarities of cutthroat business drives and impact on the environment.
ARIES [Mar. 20 - Apr. 19] -
TAURUS [Apr. 19 - May 20] - With Venus in Virgo, a fellow earth sign, you’re in a place of comfort and ease. With it still being in aspect to Uranus, anything is possible in creative endeavors. You may not be too sure what you are doing with your career. Breathe out the fear and bring in peace. GEMINI [May 20 - June 21] - It may be time to take a short vacation, a getaway of some sort. Or correspond with others that you’ve put off until later. It is now ‘later’ so don’t delay further. Continue to seek spiritual inspiration from overseas cultures and your ancestral roots. CANCER [June 21 - July 22] - The time for moving ahead with your financial goals is at hand. Relationships continue to reveal your perceptions about them and how easily you can change your thinking! Pay attention to the aches and pains of your body, they are easily addressed now. LEO [July 22 - Aug. 22] - Mars moves into

ues to be influenced by Uranus, bringing you unexpected jolts, electrical field changes and perhaps even clairvoyance. You may be drawn to Aquarians and humanitarian philosophies. Whatever your field of expertise, it may be time to teach. SCORPIO [Oct. 22 - Nov. 22] - On the 13th,
Mars enters Leo and this is your solar house of career. Soon the Sun and Jupiter add their influence. This is why you’re becoming busier in your life’s work. If the flow is not happening for you, see where you’re in resistance and remove the blocks. SAGITTARIUS [Nov. 22 - Dec. 20] - Less than
a month from now, Jupiter enters Leo, a fellow fire sign. It has been 4 years since you’ve felt this harmonious placement. Finish off the lessons about long term relationships and re-think about joint resources. Do not repeat old patterns. CAPRICORN [Dec. 21 - Jan. 19] - Unique
memories and feelings reveal themselves around your money and finances. Forgive yourself, your family and allow them to depart your psyche. Call in your Divine prosperity and abundance. Long time relationships receive the spotlight. AQUARIUS [Jan. 19 - Feb. 18] - For some of you, it has been a long time since you’ve focused on relationships. Some will run away from this and some will embrace the upcoming urge to add new friends and possibly a lover to your life. Those already in relationship will learn much about the partner. PISCES [Feb. 18 - Mar. 20] - Neptune,
your ruler, is impacted by inharmonious aspects from Mercury and the asteroid Juno. Wake up to the illusions in relationship and remember the childhood perceptions and dreams about relationships. Are they truly valid in 2002?
