Fluoride fraud by DOH officials Fluoride Fraud Retractions Demanded from Officials It is on the record that several State of Hawaii bureaucrats have made false, misleading, erroneous statements supporting their plans to mass fluoridate the residents of Hawaii via drinking water. I believe these DOH officials know or should know the falsity of their words, and that, in my opinion amounts to fraud against the People of Hawaii, and a violation of the Hawaii State Constitution’s Article III, Section 18, which provides for punishment for contemptuous behavior in the presence of any committee of the State Legislature; and of Article XIV, which states that “public officers and employees must exhibit the highest standards of ethical conduct.” Therefore, I demand these officials admit to and retract their recorded statements which I believe are obviously false statements: Mark H. K. Greer, DMD DOH, demand that you retract the false and misleading statement that you made as on “Talk of the Town,” a radio talk show that was broadcast by Hawaii Public Radio KHPR on October 2, 2001, advocating the adoption of a water fluoridation program in Hawaii: “In ingesting fluoridated water, fluoride is actually incorporated into the developing tooth structure, which makes the teeth far stronger than they are naturally.” Give me a break! That statement flies in the face of much modern research to the contrary;

you were giving misinformation to the public! The Journal of the American Dental Association (July 2000) report by Featherstone, found that the level of fluoride that may be incorporated into dental enamel by systemic ingestion — i.e., by swallowing fluoridated water — is NOT ENOUGH TO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE in preventing tooth decay.” You, Mark Greer, should retract your false statements! Bruce S. Anderson, PhD, retract a false and misleading statement that you made in a letter to Rep. William Stonebraker of the Committee on Health referring to people living in communities with fluoridatedd drinking water: “Everyone, young and old alike, residing in these diverse communities, has benefitted from community water fluoridation, and none have experienced the detrimental effects testified to in various hearings.” You should know that continued ingestion of fluoride leads to dental fluorosis and to skeletal fluorosis. Fluorides are cumulative poisons, as are arsenic and lead, which are contaminants in the fluoride material that is used in about 90% of the waterfluoridation programs in the United States. It is known that fluoride inhibits vital enzyme activity in teeth and bones and other tissues; that fluorides can cause mutations and chromosome damage; and that fluorides interfere with the enzymes that are essential to DNA repair.

According to candidate Brian Blundell LAHAINA – Brian Blundell, candidate for newly created 10th House District, said that the placement of Shark Attack signs is a violation of Home Rule by Honolulu Bureaucrats. “The signs may be warning about ‘possible’ shark attacks but the only thing being attacked is the economy of Maui,” Blundell said. The signs, say Blundell, are an example, “of Honolulu bureaucrats imposing their rules upon the hard-working people of Maui,” adding that this also constitutes an attack on Maui’s economy. Blundell explained that the signs would only succeed in “scaring all of our visitors away from one of the most popular snorkeling sites in West Maui and create a negative shock wave that will undoubtedly ripple through the Mainland.” Blundell said that State officials usually post shark-warning signs in an area for 24 hours after a shark sighting and then remove them if there are no further sharks seen in the area. Blundell says whatever explanation the Shark Task Force gives needs to be taken with a grain of salt because the bottom line is that if public safety against shark attacks was the key issue, “how come there are no signs in Western Oahu or Poipu Beach where a Body Boarder recently lost his leg.”

“Honolulu is worried about losing visitors to Maui and so the best way to reverse that is to drum up some panic,” Blundell said. Blundell cited a January 3rd story in the Star-Bulletin where Shark Task Force spokesman, Randy Honebrink stated, “Task force officials will be talking with Maui residents about posting warning signs.” “I work on several boards and I never got an invitation to this meeting,” Blundell said. “If there was a meeting, where was it held? How many people did they talk to anyway?” Blundell also cited the same article in which Honebrink said, “The state has never taken such an action as this before.” Blundell also questioned how the Board could suddenly reverse its opinion about Olowalu in six months. “In that article, Mr. Honebrink stated that there was no evidence to support a high concentration of sharks at Olowalu, and now they have reversed themselves?” Blundell said that the message is clear: “West Maui needs new leadership that will fight for Maui in Honolulu.” “I promise that I will use whatever means are necessary both in this campaign and in elected office to fight for true public meetings and input, and make Honolulu listen to the people who provide the second largest tax revenue in the State of Hawaii.”

urged the Committee to approve the provision to authorize water fluoridation, made false and misleading statements: “Community water fluoridtion.....continues to be the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay....” . You know, or should know, that large-scale surveys have shown that water fluoridation is NOT effective in preventing tooth decay. More demands for retractions are being written as documentation is developed to support lawsuits if the fraudulent statements are not retracted by the officials/individuals responsible for them.

There is epidemiological evidence linking fluoridated water with increased incidence of bone cancer in young men, and hip fractures in elderly people. In April 2002, it was reported that patents held by the Sepracor pharmaceutical company disclose that concentrations of fluorides activate G proteins in the mouth, thereby promoting the initiation of oral cancer. The era of budget cuts A recent study reported that 90,000 people die each year due to hospital related infections, making this the 4th leading cause of death in the nation. These infections are from germ-infested instruments, dirty hands and generally worn-down facilities. How could the nation’s health care facilities actually contribute as the 4th leading cause of death, you ask? Much of it, say the experts, is due to budget cuts in recent years. The CIA states that one of the reasons they didn’t know about the terrorist attacks is because they don’t have nearly the number of field agents they used to, a problem that is crucial to understanding what the bad guys are going to do before they do it. Why don’t we have the number of field agents we used to? That’s right budget cuts. The FBI’s computer system is said to be so antiquated they were keeping files on important criminals on 3x5 cards. Why isn’t the nation’s premier criminal investigation service in possession of a more current computer system? You guessed it - budget cuts. This problem isn’t limited only to the mainland. A recent headline championed the fact that the state’s parks are in dire need of some TLC. There is an $84 million waiting list full of needed repairs and maintenance for everything from leaking pipes, cracked and sagging playground equipment to rutted roads. Why are the state’s citizens being denied their recreation space? All together now - Budget Cuts! Meanwhile, the former superintendent at the Honolulu Police Department’s garage, Victor Hasebe, pleads no contest to theft and money laundering charges, essentially costing the city $33,000 for payment on parts the city didn’t need. Hasebe and an accomplice, garage supervisor Winston Owan, made an arrangement with an auto-parts retailer to jack up by 30% the price on all parts sold to the city. Maybe they learned this from

watching the way the Pentagon used to spend $500 apiece for screws. Furthermore, it wasn’t too long ago that the state Attorney General’s office brought an investigation against Honolulu Airport officials for awarding millions of dollars in unnecessary repairs to favored contractors. Several state Department of Trans portation personnel resigned as a result of the investigation that found, among other things, one contractor who made $3 million in one year simply from small jobs contracts, and another who received $8,000 for filling a crack in a concrete floor with epoxy. Is it any wonder budgets are being slashed left and right? With the kind of money the government dishes out for everyday parts and appliances, there isn’t enough money left for installation. On top of this, the FBI points the finger at the Justice Department for losing track of hundreds of weapons and laptops, many of which were crucial to investigations or simply held highly sensitive information. No wonder the government is continually bemoaning the budget woes; they have a 40% loss rate on everything they buy. I can just hear it now: “You say we need a new fleet of cars for our G-men? Well, you better order an extra few thousand because you know that a year from now we won’t be able to find most of them.” What we need isn’t more budget cuts. What we need is some people in office who can keep track of the money.

a new selling point for mercedes? A lady in Houston caught her husband cheating on her as he walked out of a hotel with his mistress. After having to be separated from them by the hotel’s security, the wife proceeded to the parking lot where she used her Mercedes 430 to run over her husband three times, killing him. Then she said it was an accident. Maybe she was just trying to give him a piece of her mind and accidentally ran him over. Then she wanted to see if he was okay but accidentally got a little too close. Twice.

Who’s pulling

Molina’s Strings?

Why Council Member Mike Molina is fighting for his vote to rezone Makena.

Story by Don Gronning Illustration by Guy Junker 6

august 8, 2002

Cover Story

Maui County Council Member Mike Molina won’t say who paid for the lawyer or appraiser who persuaded the Ethics Board to overturn the decision banning him from voting on a huge development near his land. What did it cost and who paid for it? Those are the questions being asked after the Maui Board of Ethics reversed themselves and said council member Mike Molina could vote on a rezone for a controversial South Maui development, even though he owned an interest in land near there. Molina’s attorney, Dennis Nakamura, and an Oahu land appraisal company, said the value of a 12.9 acre parcel Molina owns a part of would not be effected if the Makena Resort rezone is approved, even though the land is located about a mile from the proposed rezone. A 48-page report prepared by the firm of John Child and Company of Honolulu concluded that the Molina property was landlocked, without utilities or easements and had such poor soil not even one animal could be grazed on it. Furthermore, part of the property was zoned conservation land, further limiting its use. Nakamura argued that its value would not be effected either way because of a rezone. Two employees of John Child and Company, including CEO Karen Char, were present at the July 26 Board of Ethics meeting to support that conclusion and answer questions from the Board. Just what such a report and personal appearances by appraisers cost Molina is the subject of much speculation. Molina himself is coy about the cost and who will pay it. “I don’t know, I haven’t got the bill yet,” is his answer when asked what the attorney and report cost. “The family vacation is on hold, though.”

Will anyone else help pay? “Not as far as I know,” Molina says. Was any of the work done pro bono, or free? “Not that I know,” Molina says. Well, will the bill be in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars? “You have my answer,” Molina replies. Reports such as the John Child report likely costs several thousand dollars, says one appraiser. “I’d charge at least $5,000 for the report,” says R.J. Kirchner, owner of Paradise Appraisals of the Big Island. “I suspect because it is a big Oahu firm, they charge more.” That’s just for the report. To get the people to attend the Board of Ethics meeting would cost more, says Kirchner. He says he charges $150 an hour for his time, including travel, and that he would want at least a half-day to prepare to testify. Then there is the matter of attorney’s fees. Such legal work also does not come cheap. Nakamura appeared personally before the board three times and prepared a 20-page memorandum, which was supported by about 100 pages of various exhibits, including the language for the advisory opinion he thought the board should give. Nakamura was the attorney for Wailea 670, another controversial, big-money development in South Maui, although he says he no longer represents them. At the July 26 meeting, the Board of Ethics apparently wasn’t curious about who paid for the report, as nobody inquired about costs or who footed the bill. “I’m surprised the board didn’t ask who paid for the report,” says Kirchner. “I would have.”

The Child report doesn’t include a dollar amount on what the land is worth and in response to board member Tamio Iwado’s question, Char said they did not place a value on the parcel. Nakamura had answered a similar question from Iwado earlier in the meeting by saying they had the land appraised but that the value wasn’t the real issue. The real issue, he said, was whether the value is going to change as a result of the rezone. After reading the Child report and listening to Nakamura, one could conclude the land is worthless. That’s not how Maui County sees it. According to the county property tax website www.mauipropertytax.com, the agricultural portion is valued at $359,100 and the conservation land is assessed at $151,200 for a total of more than half a million dollars. In amended financial disclosure forms, Molina says he owns 10 percent and it is worth $51,490. Molina’s actions throughout the controversial Makena rezone have been suspect. He did not reveal his interest in the land until after he had voted once in favor of the rezone, even though all elected officials are required to disclose all interest in real estate in Maui County on a sworn form filed with the County Clerk’s office. Molina’s interest in the land only became public after he was asked about it on a call-in, cable television show. The Makena Resort rezone is necessary in order to build a new hotel or time-share development, as well as more than 1,000 homes that could take place over the next 20 years. It is potentially a billion-dollar project, opponents say. They say such a project should not be approved until infrastructure needs, such as roads and water, are resolved. Opponents say it is a big money project being pushed through by behind-the-scenes operators over the wishes of the community. Supporters say the Japanese developer, Seibu., Inc, has been a good corporate citizen, that the project has been 20 years in planning, and that several changes have been made to address opponents’ concerns. The community is divided on the issue. Developers such as Everett Dowling of Dowling, Inc. say it is exactly the kind of project that should be approved. Dowling is listed as one of Child’s clients in the report. The Maui Contractors Association, a trade association, also supports the project. But Maui Tomorrow, a citizen’s organization concerned about the effect of unchecked growth on Maui, strongly opposes the Makena development, as do several other groups. The matter became public after a caller to a local cable access television show asked Molina about it on the air. The show was hosted by Don Couch, who was then chair of the Board of Ethics. Couch suggested Molina submit the matter to the Board to decide. Couch has since resigned from the board to run for a state senate seat as a Republican. That resulted in Molina requesting an opinion from the Board of Ethics. He appeared before them Feb. 20, the day before the full Maui County Council was set to vote on the

rezone. He told the board he owned a 20 percent interest in the land and that he had forgotten to include it on his financial disclosure form. He said he considered it his right and obligation as an elected official to vote on controversial projects and that he did not want to recuse himself from this vote. Board members present voted unanimously that there would be an appearance of a conflict of interest if he voted and advised him to recuse himself, which he did the next day. Without his vote, the project didn’t have enough support to pass and was returned to committee. Molina, who had initially requested the opinion, didn’t like the answer and asked the Board of Ethics to reconsider. Eventually that led to the July 26 meeting and the 6-1 vote to allow Molina to vote on Makena. The chair doesn’t vote unless there is a tie. The only member voting against was Michael Inouye of Molokai, who also voted against it during the Feb. 20 meeting. Inouye asked Molina why, if the land is so worthless, he didn’t just give up his “beneficiary rights.” Molina replied that it was a family decision and Nakamura jumped in to say there was nobody who would take the land. “If the value is so worthless, why insist on retaining interest?” Inouye said in a phone interview for this story. “Imagine ten years down the line. Zoning can change, and if it does, he will be in an unenviable position. I voted mainly for his protection. Why not have a clean slate so he can vote either way, and not have it come back to haunt him?” Molina says opposition to him voting is politically motivated, pure and simple. “It’s McCarthyism,” he says. “They’re out there to smear me.” Molina will stand for re-election this year. His opponent, Lance Holter, seems reluctant to make an issue out of the ethics controversy, but says ethics does matter. “Ethics are an issue,” he says. “But the voters are akami. The voters will judge.” Former Maui Tomorrow president Mark Sheehan is less diplomatic. Sheehan, a realtor, wrote a two-paragraph statement for the Feb. 20 meeting in which he said property values in the area would go up if the rezone was approved. That letter came under fire at the July 26 meeting. Nakamura and board member and fellow realtor Ed Bello said it was misleading and they questioned the motives behind it. Contacted by phone for a reaction to this story, Sheehan quoted a letter in the editor to one of the local newspapers. “It’s the best ethics money can buy,” he said. He also questions just who did finance the report and legal fees. He doesn’t think Molina alone paid for the attorney and report. “I don’t think on his $43,000 salary he can pay for these things,” says Sheehan. Since Molina won’t answer definitively if he is footing the whole bill, voters are left to wonder. He won’t even answer if there is anything he would do different, if he had it to do over again. He gives a typical Molina-esque reply. “I can’t answer that,” he says. “I’ll have to get back to you.”

NEWSOFTHEWeIrd LEAD STORIES Serial killer Coral Eugene Watts, 52, thought to have been put away for life by a Houston judge in 1982, is now scheduled to be released in 2006 because of a drafting error in his plea bargain. (Because of a paucity of evidence about the 13 murders to which Watts confessed, he was allowed to plead to “aggravated” attempted murder and be sentenced to 60 years without parole, but the prosecutor neglected to specify any “aggravated”-type weapon, and an appeals court ruled that only “aggravated” crimes justify no parole; consequently, Watts has been amassing “good time” requiring early release.) (And a judge released accused murderer Corey Pernell McNeil in Newport News, Va., in July because a clerk forgot to sign the victim’s death certificate; by the time the error was corrected, McNeil could not be found.) In July, for the second time in a month, a village council in Punjab province approved an abuse of females that had to be stopped by the Pakistan government. Tribal law allows a convict to be pardoned if the victim’s family accepts cash compensation, but the council pardoned condemned murderers who agreed to send cash and their eight teenage daughters for marriage to elderly relatives of their victims. Two weddings had already taken place by the time the police halted the deal.

Good News for Men New York University researchers writing in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that sex-abstaining women and women whose partners wear condoms were more frequently depressed and concluded that hormones in semen may enter the bloodstream and pep women up (May). And Concordia University (Montreal) researchers reported that their PT141 drug seems to encourage female rats to solicit

By chuck Shepherd

sex from males three times as often as they otherwise would and are scheduling human trials (May). And Hebrew Rehabilitation Center (Boston) researchers found that the grain in beer (which men consume far more than women) must be a major reason why men suffer less osteoporosis (July).

Compelling Explanations Prosecutors in Pottstown, Pa., said in May that they thought that some of rap singer Karim Ali Howard’s lyrics might be used against him in his upcoming trial for cocaine trafficking. (A sample: “I’m going to sell coke until you call me pope, do dirt until the lord tries to stop me, it’s gonna take hundreds of bullets just to drop me.”) And in June, Russell Adam Pelletier, 24, was convicted of murder in Louisa, Va., despite arguing that a supposed confession captured by undercover wire was just freestyle verse by Pelletier, who admits he writes misogynistic and violent rap music.

Also, in the Last Month ... When a car full of suspected thieves crashed after a high-speed police chase, the one person inside who was well enough to flee on foot did, but made it only a short ways before his prosthetic leg fell off (Englewood, Ohio). Another man on trial for fleeing police in his van allegedly apologized when they caught him, reasoning that he had just bought crack cocaine and wanted to go somewhere to consume it before he went to jail (Rochester, N.Y.) Three obese and unhealthy people filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and KFC for addicting them to unhealthful food (New York City). A 36-year-old woman sued Delta Airlines, claiming agents publicly humiliated her after finding a “sex toy” (that she and her husband had just purchased) vibrating in her checked baggage (Clearwater, Fla.).

Eh Brah! What right do you have to cause so much pain? If you were a real man you wouldn’t turn into such a cold harsh emotionless bastard. If your business was breaking hearts, you could be a millionaire. But you will never get rich because you won’t give your own heart a chance. What are you afraid of, you insecure shit for brains? You will miss me when you finally pull your head out of your ass and realize I am gone. I loved you for more than 20 years, what a freaking waste of my time. You can kiss that money goodbye too, you don’t own me and you never will. I may shed a tear or two for you and love lost but not for that god-damn slut your humping. Not a shred of integrity could be found on her hairy body. By the way I didn’t know you liked mustaches on girls. Since you both are offensive and vulgar you belong together. I just hope you never have kids that could be raised to be abominations like yourselves. Of course I have risen above you both, and I will never be seen stooping to your level. “Free at Last”

To crave a big or small appetite

I rode my bicycle to the Cannery Mall one day hoping to find clothes to work-out in. I desperately needed to join the gym because since I had moved to Maui, all I have done is eat. Once I stepped inside, the smell of food distracted my original purpose of going to the mall. Once I rounded the corner by Walden books, I stood in silence with my mouth agape at all of the food that I could pick from. I knew right then and there, that I wouldn’t leave the mall hungry, and I also knew that it would take me a while to decide what I wanted to eat. As I slowly moved through the metal benches, I read some of the menus from each restaurant. Chinese, Japanese and Mexican food didn’t sound good. Neither did pork chops and macaroni salad. As I walked down the aisle, I noticed a Greek restaurant tucked in the corner of the assembly line of eateries, and the exotic names of the foods enticed me. The menu consisted of Gyros, Shish Kebabs, Pastitso, Moussaka, a veggie plate, Falafel, Tabouleh, a Greek salad, Spanakopita and Baklava. I couldn’t pronounce most of the dishes and because of this, I felt a little embarrassed as I approached the counter. Like a scene out of the Godfather, an older man appeared out of nowhere. I stepped back and pretended like I was reading the menu. He intimidated me and I couldn’t understand why. Voices were entering my head and a nervous sweat broke on my brow. The voices whispered that this was a stern man, and he ran his restaurant like “the Soup Nazi” on Seinfeld. Of course, my mind was running wild and I was making this all up. But I was made anxious by the look of seriousness on his face. With sweating palms, I mustered the courage to approach the counter. At the same time, he took each step with me, meeting me at the counter. It was as if we were going to draw pistols out at any moment and have a showdown.

South Maui

Athens Greek Restaurant I said, “I would like a Ji-ro.” Oh shit, I said it wrong. My face flushed and he corrected me as soon as it came out of my mouth. “Yeero,” he said. I let out an uncomfortable laugh. It was so uncomfortable that it made me even more uncomfortable with the entire situation. I said, “I would like lamb, I mean beef - well, I guess it is the same. I would like lamb.” I sure did it this time. I had no idea what I was talking about. I had heard that Gyros came with lamb, but the menu said beef too. I stammered on and he just said, “Would you like onions?” By this time, I wanted to get into one of the trashcans and hide. Why was this man making me so damn nervous? Right then and there, I decided that no one is going to make me feel this way. Besides, I had practically made up his entire personality up in

my head. I decided to be very nice and sociable until the end of my transaction. “How are you today?” I said. A smile broke out on his face and my entire body relaxed. He talked and talked until he handed me my change. Whew, I was so glad that was over with. I sat down and ate my gyro with a smile on my face. Assuming he didn’t like me sure made me feel like an asshole. I couldn’t even remember why I came to the mall in the first place as the tasty meal assuaged my self-inflicted anxieties. For big or small appetites, come by the Athens Greek Restaurant at the Lahaina Cannery Mall to experience terrific gyros, desserts or salads that can be purchased for under $7 ! Generous and inexpensive meals are handed out here with soothing smiles! Takeout orders are also available.

Vin Diesel Is The Shit There’s A New Bond On The Block XXX – Four Stars It was only a matter of time before the thrill-seeking exploits of extreme sports daredevils got hitched with a Hollywood rising star in a Bond-styled franchise. “XXX” is a testosterone driven action flick that starts off quick and intense before going gradually bigger until its enormous and impossibly dangerous climax sequences hit you like a megaton of bricks. Vin Diesel (“Pitch Black,” “The Fast and the Furious”) is the chiseled, soft-spoken eye-of-the-tornado going big like a modern Steve McQueen imparting his antiauthoritarian character Xander Cage with exact amounts of bravado, lust and sheer enjoyment. When Xander says, “I live for this shit,” before being yanked by parachute from the back of a low flying airplane over a Colombian cocaine field, we -the audienceharmonize completely with his mettle. Director Rob Cohen (“Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story”) intuitively interprets the way super-action kung-fu movies and blow-em up spy thrillers of the ‘70s were leading cinema. It seems odd that it’s taken this long for a well-rounded hybrid action model to finally get the combination right, but “XXX” is that new mold. Screenwriter Rich Wilkes (“Glory Daze”) takes special delight in open-

ing the movie with a sequence that mocks a cliché central to the Bond-type spy thrillers. A pretty-boy spy glides down a cable to kick the butt of an Eastern European rapscallion before pulling off his jumpsuit to reveal the tuxedo he wears underneath. But the tux serves as the opposite of camouflage when our American spy sets foot inside to party with a bunch of death-metal revelers. While an ominous looking band plays thrash metal to lyrics stolen from Iggy Pop, a Czech sniper finishes off the U.S. interloper. The scene adroitly addresses a changing of the modern spy-thriller guard and signals “XXX” as heir to the genre over the rowdy strum and clang of electric guitars. Cut to a U.S. politician named Dick insulting a ‘valet’ (Xander Cage) about to take Dick’s Ferrari on its last ride, but not before attaching video cameras to the car that will catch Xander’s police-evading, bridge-jumping stunt finale with Vin Diesel sarcastically intoning, “welcome to the Xander zone.” We know by the adulation of Xander’s daredevil peers at a soiree celebrating his conquest that Xander is heads and shoulders above them in ability and guts. The inclusion of extreme sports heroes like skateboard legend Tony

14 oz. Prime Rib

Hawk, and BMX superstar Mat Hoffman, couches the scene with street cred and humor. Enter the CIA vi-a-vis NSA veteran Agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson “Pulp Fiction”) to make Xander an offer he can’t refuse. “XXX” shifts into turbo drive for Xander’s CIA tests, which find him waking into a violent situation from a druginduced slumber to fend for himself against increasingly tough adversaries. The brilliant series of action sequences go a long way in proving what Xander is truly capable of, and give the character a spine of authority that a movie like “Bad Company” didn’t come close to achieving with its similar demands on the Chris Rock character. Samuel Jackson’s badly scarred Gibbons instructs Xander on his mission to infiltrate a Prague based crime gang called “Anarchy 99” to absolve himself of his former crimes, and the film is off and running in striking Czech locations that provide a landmine of highenergy intrigue. Yelena (Asia Argento - “The Stendhal Syndrome”) is a Russian sex-bomb spy already operating undercover within “Anarchy 99”, who chews up scenery and actors like a hyperactive kitten on a ball of yarn. A synergistic competition and chemistry between Argento and Diesel percolates inside the film’s intense action, so that while the two never share a categorical sex scene togeth-

Vin Diesel stars as Xander “XXX” Cage er, there’s always a tug and pull of sensual inflation. But it’s the shameless use of fancy guns, gadgets, souped-up cars and deadly boats that paint “XXX” as a fantastic homage to all things material in the spy-thriller genre. Techno-nerd Toby Lee Shavers (Michael Roof) gives Xander a multi-projectile gun, x-ray vision binoculars, explosive Band-Aids, and a custom ‘67 GTO muscle car loaded with more fire power than a SWAT team to “go blow stuff up.” The charismatic Vin Diesel may not require clothes to make the man, but he catches a lot more air with all of those parachutes.

Last year, I dated a man who was very good to me. Because he moved too fast and doesn’t make enough money (I can struggle financially on my own), I cut him loose. I have a close girlfriend, 35, who’s not only a virgin, but has never even kissed a man -- something she wanted to change so dating wouldn’t be such a big deal. Recently, her house needed work, and I asked the guy to help her. One thing led to another, and they got physically involved, although they didn’t have sex. A week later, he begged me to take him back, reiterating that he loves me deeply and can’t be with any other woman. Shortly afterward, I figured out that something had happened between him and my friend. He broke into tears, calling it “a moment of weakness” with someone who isn’t for him. She said I’d convinced her that he was too poor for me, or she never would have let it happen. I believe them, but right now, all three of us are torn apart. I want to pursue a relationship with him, but how can I survive the pain of being with a man my best friend will always see as her “first” — the man who finally made her feel like a woman? – Shredded We “The man who finally made her feel like a woman” could actually be the perfect match for you, the woman who sometimes sounds like a script excerpt from a Summer’s Eve commercial. Pain management, it seems, is the key. Now, do you actually get a little electric shock every time The New Woman stocks up on Tampax or gets within a few feet of pink chiffon? Or is the real problem a little jolt of psychic pain — the result of your hopping off to one-toomany clearance sales in the melodrama department? Apparently, Scarlett, you’ve put the recent past on a little rhinestone leash, and you’re dragging it around with you everywhere you go. This might make sense if this particular piece of past had some bearing on the present or the future, and not just because you’re letting it shed all over the two people you care most about. Quite frankly, if you’re going to furrow your brow over the competition, a 35-yearold woman who’s never been anything-ed by anybody is the least of your worries. Yeah, The Man With The Emaciated Wallet did toss your friend a night of what might charitably be called “charity sex” (except that it was, at best, charity petting). Okay, so it wasn’t exactly a form of doit-yourself tooth extraction, but it probably wasn’t the erotic hour of the century either. After all, it did send the guy scrambling back to beg to be with you, not scrambling back for another fumble...uh, tumble, with the sexual freshman. Your biggest problem is your conviction that you have a problem, probably borne of expectations that your love life read like a book sold in supermarket checkout lines.

You can either accept the past (wise, since requests for rollbacks are rarely honored) and work on building a future with this guy...or you can begin construction on a shrine to all the sex he’s ever had with anybody else. But, what, pray tell, are you supposed to do about any thoughts of him that may or may not be floating around in your girlfriend’s head? Well, we all have our hangnails to bear. Whether yours come in hangnail or 300-foot wooden cross size is up to you.

Pressing Your Duck My ex-girlfriend and I have been broken up for two years (after six-years together). We haven’t talked about getting back together in over a year, but I love her as much as I ever did. We see each other about twice a week because I live with her brother, my best friend, who she says she’s visiting. Lately, she’s been stopping over much more often. Would it be out of the question to bring “us” up again? – Wishful Thinking Like many men, when it comes to signals from women, your powers of observation rival those of a stack of wet timber. This girl is dropping over several times a week to visit her brother? Check the name on the mailbox next to yours. Does it say “Chris Rock”? If not, consider that her brother might not be the roommate she’s most interested in encountering — especially not if she frequently arrives dressed like she’s due at The Playboy Mansion instead of her bro’s dumpster-adjacent two-bedroom. Is it out of the question to bring “us” up again? You’ve let it hang in the air this long. Why not just leave it up there until duck hunting season and see if some other guy comes along and shoots it down? (c)2002, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. Got a problem? USASC Championship Titles Brought Home ‘Kudos’ goes to 5 top amateurs from Maui

A Force to be Reckoned with

Dusty’s gracious trophy acceptance The United States Amateur Surfing Championships were held in Oceanside, California showcasing the US’s top amateur talent from July 20 through July 26, 2002. With over 80 competitors from Hawaii, 15 qualified for the 28 available slots in the finals through mediocre conditions at the Oceanside Pier. Championship titles were brought home in 5 divisions. Diamond in the rough, Lahaina’s Dustin Payne, 13, out surfed 40 top amateur competitors in his division, Boys 13-14, to go undefeated through 5 heats to take the 1st place championship title. In what has been heralded as the move of the day at the championship finals, Dusty’s huge power layback snap on an overhead wave established his reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

Maui’sAstrology August 8-14, 2002 All times Hawaiian Standard Lunar Cycles: Full Moon - 22 August at 12:30pm at 29 Aquarius 39. New Moon - 6 September, 5:11 pm at 14 Virgo 20. ARIES [Mar. 20 - Apr. 19] - This lunar cycle (new to full) is highly potent for your creative efforts. Pay attention to upcoming due dates; anything that requires a timely delivery will be best completed by the month’s end if not sooner. Interesting messages from friends point out areas of career change. TAURUS [Apr. 19 - May 20] - Highly creative ideas may be yours that impact your home. Make sure you can complete them by the full moon. Take care of any nagging health issues as your ruler is now in the annual transit of your house daily routine and wellness. GEMINI [May 20 - June 21] - With Venus in your house of creativity, be open to receiving ideas that you see full-blown in your mind. Although you may want to shout about them from the rooftops, allow them to be nurtured quietly within before you set them free upon the world. CANCER [June 21 - July 22] - The blessing of Jupiter moves from your sign into your house of prosperity. Use this lunar cycle to illuminate any blocks and difficulties in your financial flow. You’re in the mood to freshen up or totally renovate your home zone. Pick new colors to surround yourself with. LEO [July 22 - Aug. 22] - If there is a project you’d like to have completed soon, you can do it by the full moon, if you set your intention ASAP. One of the ‘blessings’ of Jupiter in your sign can be the tendency to eat more, party more and forget about tomorrow’s consequences. Choose your indulgence wisely! VIRGO [Aug. 23 - Sept. 22] - With your co-ruler Mercury back in your sign for its annual transit, you can feel joy in communicating what’s burdening your mind.

By Eliza Bassett 808–573–3039

The continuing pressure in your 12th house (subconscious mind) makes you need to share this changing time with the world. Write and speak it. LIBRA [Sept. 22 - Oct. 22] - Oh enjoy the presence of Venus in your sign in her annual visit. Indulge in baths, body work, buy some new clothes, and treat yourself to something you’ve postponed. Open the floodgates to your prosperity flow since Jupiter’s there to push that along. SCORPIO [Oct. 22 - Nov. 22] - Set your intention at this time for your True Divine Success — it will come to fruition very swiftly. It is your majick carpet manifestation time. Release your highest and best desires upon the world. Utter them from your deepest point of Spiritual contact. SAGITTARIUS [Nov. 22 - Dec. 20] - Some of you may be itching to get back to the books. Find a course that pushes your mental envelope to new areas only fleetingly dreamed of in the past. Communications at work holds the spotlight. Your analytical skills are in force. CAPRICORN [Dec. 21 - Jan. 19] - New books or an instructor offer you some information you’ve been seeking to help clear out some of the mental garbage that’s long burdened you. Opening your ability to receive, which means you must trust and let go of control, brings new income potentials. AQUARIUS [Jan. 19 - Feb. 18] - Attune yourself to pursuing a higher level of craftsmanship in your work by taking a class or studying long distance via the net. A friend may introduce you to the perfect course. Choose new power struggles with care, as there are some long-term consequences. PISCES [Feb. 18 - Mar. 20] - Use this time to set your intention to leap ahead of any nagging health issues or to change your daily routine to something more fluid. Your partner and friends may seem more chatty than usual. Listen to their perspective, especially if it is unusually inspiring.
