Hawaiians Turn Out to Protest Lawsuit Legal Action Threatens Native Hawaiian Entitlements Native Hawaiians and supporters turned out for a day-long demonstration in front of the state building on High Street in Wailuku last Monday. They were protesting a federal lawsuit that could eliminate the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) and the Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL). Sponsored by Na Kapuna O Maui (the Elders of Maui), the group sought to draw attention to what is known as the Arakaki lawsuit. About 100-200 people turned out for the event, which sought to bring the spirit of aloha to a serious occasion for the native Hawaiian community. Native Hawaiian people have been losing their own lands pretty much from the outset of western contact. But the latest court challenge threatens the few benefits available to native Hawaiian people and just about the last of the lands set aside for them. The state Department of Hawaiian Home lands, which controls 200,000 acres of Hawaiian lands, along with OHA, are specifically targeted for elimination. The suit seeks to return the lands and other assets to the state. “The citizens of Hawaii want every last bit of what Hawaiians have,” says Isaac Harp, a native Hawaiian activist and one of the event’s organizers. “There is a lot of hurt.”

Earl Arakaki and 17 others filed a federal suit in March claiming OHA and the DHHL, are unconstitutional because they violate the principle of equal protection guaranteed under the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Arakaki won an earlier decision in 2000 which allowed non-native Hawaiians to run for a OHA trustee position. That decision is known as Arakaki 1. The suit under protest is called Arakaki 2. Jon Van Dyke is a professor of law at the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, and an attorney representing OHA. He says if Arakaki, et al, wins this second suit, it would at least cripple OHA and probably eliminate it. “This is a huge issue,” says Van Dyke. In addition to educational, health and social service programs, the lawsuit threatens thousands of DHHL homesteads. “In the state there are 15,000 to 20,000 leases and another 25,000 waiting,” says Van Dyke. He says the Arakaki 2 lawsuit isn’t aimed at the current leaseholders - many of whom have waited years for their land - although they could be effected by rulings that flow from a decision that grants Arakai 2 what they want. But the suit wants to stop any more people from getting homesteads, including the 25,000

on the waiting list, as well as many other Hawaiian rights. It would disrupt island life in many ways, protesters said. The suit could effect kuleana water rights and easements, state laws regarding environmental impact studies, public shoreline access and native fishing and gathering rights, says Harp. The Hawaiian people have shown aloha and hospitality to foreigners for hundreds of years, he says, and he resents the charge that people wanting to exercise their native Hawaiian rights are racist. “I take offense at the plaintiffs’ claim that this is a race-based issue,” says Harp. “We have opened our arms for a hundred years. This is not a race-based issue.” It is a social justice issue, says Van Dyke. Aunties Waiohu Laura and Bernice Nitta have been “The Hawaiian cause is just,” called to action, “Ku’e Me ke Aloha”, at a peaceful prohe says. “Hawaiians have suffered test at the State building in Wailuku. economic outlook = bad The airline industry continues to reel after 9/11. U.S. Airways, the nation’s seventh largest carrier, recently filed for bankruptcy protection. This does not mean the company is going to fold, but it did not help confidence in the industry, as most major airline stocks took huge hits in the days following the announcement. On top of that is American Airlines which announced that it is going to cut 7,000 jobs, sell off 74 aircraft and generally reduce operational ability. Al Qaeda may have only succeeded in killing 3,000 people on September 11, but the effects of their actions have continued to rage on, and not just in the airlineindustry. First there was Enron. The nation was mortified to learn that a worldwide energy firm could be so blatant in its accounting mismanagement. The fact that such a large company could implode that quickly set off a flurry of successive downfalls. WorldCom is now the leading headline grabber with its initial estimate of $4 billion in losses jumping to $7.1 billion. Oops, we forgot about that other $3 billion. My question is, did the discovery of these accounting mishaps have anything to do with the investigation into business practices of Al-Qaeda? In the days and months following the terrorist attacks, the Bush administration went to all four corners of the globe to root out the financial tentacles that supplied Al-Qaeda. In the process, certain things were suddenly and glaringly clear. Things such as Enron not being able to account for their massive profits and completely going into the toilet as a result. Did Al-Qaeda intend to disrupt Wall Street like this? Absolutely. That’s why they attacked the heart of our financial center. They just didn’t realize how successful they would be, but they also didn’t realize that in the long run, this may not be as good for them as they had hoped. Our weaknesses have now been exposed, but they are going to be fixed. Who knows? Maybe we needed a little slap

upside the head to wake us up. However, for Al Qaeda’s sake, they were a lot better off having us asleep.

Cheech 4 president? It seems the politically fragile issue of marijuana legalization is gaining more and more momentum each year. My guess is it’s only a matter of time before marijuana does in fact become legal, whether for medicinal purposes or recreational. Regardless of the form in which it becomes legal, the issue here is much deeper than many people realize. We can’t just go and legalize pot because it occurs in nature, something many proponents of legalization would like us to do. “It grows in nature therefore it must be okay,” someone always seems to say. If only it were that easy. It’s like prohibition. Alcohol used to be illegal but we didn’t legalize it because wheat and barley grow in nature. We legalized it because criminalizing it wasn’t helping the cause. The government legalized it because that way, they could at least keep a handle on it. Of course, now alcohol is the leading cause of traffic deaths in the United States. If marijuana were legal, the government would have a better chance at regulating its use and distribution. It would be sold in cigarette form just like tobacco cigarettes, and its potency would probably be diminished as well. Its allure would be reduced, therefore kids wouldn’t be so inclined to try it just to be dangerous. Yes, one day it will be legal. It might be awhile for us to get past certain hurdles, such as, every time the subject of legalization comes up, some stoner says in his best Spiccoli impersonation, “Dude, right on! Now we can take bong hits when we go out to dinner.” Because that’s not the reason for legalization. That’s the reason we don’t want it legalized. Pot kills the brain. End of story. Legalizing it won’t stop that from happening, but it will allow us to address the problem rather than pretend it doesn’t exist.

Story by Patrick Minford

Hanau Ka Moku,

“An Island is Born” A Groundbreaking Tryst Between Traditional Chant and Hula and Modern Dance Conveys the Historic and Significant Story of the Birth of an Island in Modern Times. History is being created in a groundbreaking production garnering attention and support from arts organizations throughout the nation, and making its world premiere at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on August 23rd and 24th. Hanau Ka Moku (translated as “an island is born”) tells the story of Lo’ihi, the undersea island forming off the coast of the island of Hawaii, through expressive new chant and hula, as well as a modern dance performance. The dance drama is a daring collaboration between the Edith Kanaka’ole Foundation, the MACC and Tau Dance Theater. What makes the production so unique is that it is chronicling modern Hawaiian history in traditional ways, and at the same time pushing the limits of chant and hula by incorporating western dance. Sisters Pua Kanahele and Nalani Kanaka’ole, kumu hula and two of the state’s most respected authorities on Hawaiian culture, have written Hawaiian chants in praise of Pele, the cycles of creation, and the birth of the undersea island they call Kama’ehu. (Lo’ihi is the name given by scientists.) This intersection of Hawaiian tradition and western movement has drawn attention both statewide and nationally for its cultural significance. Support from such prestigious arts organizations as the National Dance Project, a program administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Baciu Fund of the Hawai’i Community Foundation, and The Charles Engelhard Foundation, has resulted in funding which will ensure that the production will tour the Mainland following its Maui premiere. The island of Kama’ehu, which means the reddish child, serves as a metaphor for the changes that have taken place in Hawai’i and its people. Halau O Kekuhi, the Hilo halau led by Kanaka’ole and Kanahele, will bring this metaphor to life, but because hula is so deeply rooted in tradition, modern concepts cannot be easily reflected. To incorporate and express presentday images, the sisters have written English translations of the chants to be expressed by O’ahu’s Tau Dance Theater, led by its Artistic Director, Peter

Rockford-Espiritu. “Hula confines you to a certain vocabulary,” said Rockford-Espiritu, who studied hula growing up on O’ahu, as well as classical ballet and modern dance in New York during the 1980s. “Like in ballet, you have to stay within certain boundaries. Modern dance has no restrictions. It gives me a chance to fully express myself as a Polynesian.” While remaining within their respective genres, the performers will interact onstage. “Hanau Ka Moku will have us look at traditional chants in a new way,” said Hokulani Holt-Padilla, Cultural Programs Director at The Center. “It will draw from the best of both dance genres.” Hanau Ka Moku‘s historical significance lies in the fact that there are currently no new Hawaiian chants and dances about the new island, and very few being created to record the critical events that are transforming modern-day Hawai’i. With 7 generations of hula before them, Kanaka’ole and Kanahele are uniquely suited to create that record, but remain sensitive to the legacy of their kupuna. “When we go home at night, we have to think, ‘will our parents like this or are they spinning in their graves?’” said Kanaka’ole. Many of the chants that make up Hawai’i’s oral history were passed down from ancient times. The chants of Pele and her family tell the story of Hawai’i’s geological creation, and the Kumulipo explains the origins of life in Hawai’i, but traditional chant and hula about these events have not been authored in recent times. It took the birth of an island to change that. As Kama’ehu continued to rise, Kanaka’ole and Kanahele felt it was time to record a new chapter in the Hawaiian historical record in traditional ways. In Hawai’i, Hanau Ka Moku will make its world premiere- and only scheduled performance in the state- at the MACC’s Castle Theater. Kanaka’ole, Kanahele, and Rockford-Espiritu all agree that the Maui Arts & Cultural Center is the best place to debut such a bold undertaking. “The Maui Arts & Cultural Center is the only venue in the state that puts their money where their mouth is,” said Rockford-Espiritu. “The Center truly does as much as it can for artists and the community. It is the best by far.” Not only pushing their genre through the creation of new chants and hula to chronicle what is happening now, but going even further by incorporating modern dance, Kanaka’ole and Kanahele have created a cultural stir that is making waves far beyond their home waters. In the same way that the chants of Pele and her family continue to tell the story of Hawaii’s creation, the chants of Hanau Ka Moku may well be used to tell the story of today’s Hawaiians and of Kama’ehu when it rises from the ocean.

News of the Weird reported on black invitro fertilization babies born to white couples in the U.S. (1998) and the Netherlands (1993). In July 2002, a white couple at a British National Health Service fertility clinic gave birth to black twins and are now fighting the clinic’s effort to award the babies instead to the father whose sperm created them. Said a NHS official, “Great steps have been taken to ensure that this sort of (mix-up) never happens.” Among the latest crackpot legal theories: Randall Lynn Harper, 48, was sentenced to a year in jail for resisting a police officer; he had refused to accept a traffic summons because his driver’s license is typed in all-

uppercase letters, which he said is legally reserved only for corporations and is therefore not binding on humans (Salinas, Calif., June). David Johnston, 54, on trial for swindling investors, subsequently formed a company with the same name as the lead plaintiff suing him, then petitioned under that company’s name to dismiss the case against David Johnston, and now thus believes he has been cleared (Clearwater, Fla., July). Two months ago, News of the Weird reported that Cuba’s Fidel Castro once had the idea of breeding miniature cows that could be kept indoors and which would supply their owners with enough milk for the family. About a month after that dispatch from Havana appeared in The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press reported on Rockwell, Iowa, farmer Dustin Pillard, who is offering his 50 miniature cows (height: 3 feet) for sale, but primarily as pets. Said Pillard, “We’re breeding just for the novelty.”

Also, in the Last Month ... In the middle of a crowd booing Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, a man was arrested, apparently only because he was holding a slice of pie (since a protester had once hit Chretien with a pie) (Vancouver). Tough-love mother Karen Paape distributed mug-shot posters of her two teenage sons, asking that anyone who sees them smoking should call the police (West Bend, Wis.). A man convicted of sexually assaulting and killing his 16-year-old nephew was sentenced to be thrown off a cliff in a sack, with the provision that if he survives, he will be hanged (Mashhad, Iran). A 20-year-old man was fatally shot wrestling for a gun with a 21-year-old man with whom he had been debating which of the two was more likely to wind up in heaven (Godley, Texas).

Artist Brock Enright of Virginia Beach, Va., originally started staging rough, vivid kidnappings, using volunteers, so that he could show them on video at New York City galleries, but found so many willing, thrillseeking victims that he now charges $500 or more for the realistic experience (but they get to keep the videos). Enright now has two dozen “fetish terrorism” (as Time Out magazine wrote) clients and is thinking of expanding to other cities. A 25-year-old sculptor, supposedly typical of Enright’s clients, said he signed on because he wanted to test his limits: “I needed to believe that (the kidnapper) was going to kill me.” The Lane brothers of New York, Mr. Winner Lane, 44, and Mr. Loser Lane, 41 (their actual birth names), were profiled in a July Newsday report, made more interesting by the fact that Loser is successful (a police detective in the South Bronx) and Winner is not (a history of petty crimes). A sister said she believes her parents selected “Winner” because their late father was a big baseball fan and “Loser” just to complete the pairing.

Eh Brah... To the large, stinky, road hogs that shouldn’t be allowed down Front Street. Your exhaust makes me want to vomit. It should be illegal for all the big-ass buses to obstruct our beautiful view and already small roadways. Those ugly oversize tour buses are too big to take the turns down our small historical streets. They create excess traffic and unnecessary road rage. Their appearance on our quaint streets cheapens old Lahaina town’s atmosphere. The county should require special roadways for large tour buses. If we thrive on tourism then drop the busload of souvenir hungry tourists off to walk their happy asses down Front Street. It’s better to see our sidewalks and businesses crowded with tourists ready to spend their money than having to expose everyone to the disgust of these dinosaur-sized, road hungry, foul smelling eye-sores! “Fed-up with the Fumes”

Red Hot Chili Peppers Stage Dive Is Their Latest Show Proof of Gen X Fizzling Out?

Rock angst. The combination was intoxicating, youthfully rebellious, and totally unique. This is why the Peppers have stood the test of time. Through numerous battles with drug addiction, painful personal losses, 7 different guitarists, and years of hard living, they hadn’t lost their juice, that zing, their Chili Pepper spices until now. Is it sacrilege to say they sucked? Expectations can be a dangerous thing; and while I wasn’t expecting the whole set to be all old stuff, I must admit that I still expected the ol’ juicy energy that I was used to. Before I elaborate, allow me to take you on a little journey, back to 1987, when I first saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers live. While I was still in high school, when my friends and I could find a ride, we would go to the Bay Area and look for fun and adventure in the big bad city. On one such adventure we met Flea’s girl friend, she put us on the guest list to see them live promoting their latest album (that’s vinyl) Uplift MofoParty Plan. What Luck, and what a show! These guys were full of base slapping, full force, crazed energy. They assaulted the crowd, abused anyone brave enough to rush the stage

One inter-island flight, airport search (complete with slippa x-ray), hotel check-in and over priced lunch later, we were finally there, waiting in line outside the arena. The tour was promoting the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s new release entitled “By The Way.” Not yet familiar with the new release, I was overcome with anticipation and excitement. My God, I grew up on this music! The Chili Peppers were to my generation what the Rolling Stones were to my Mom’s. For an impressive 18+ years these guys have been pumping out energetic, fresh and exciting music; and I was about to see them live for a second time, the first was back in 1987. So many great bands come and go, very few can come back year after year and remain fresh and innovative. I was thrilled to be there. So, I ask myself, as they took my ticket and ushered me through the turn-style, what is it that has made the Chili Peppers so enduring? The juicy, hot, living energy that sent a message out to an entire generation, that we could all take life by the balls and revel in the experience. They took the sexy grooves of funk masters like Sly Stone and George Clinton and mixed it up with playful humor and plenty of Punk

Red Hot Chili Peppers Continued from page 10

group dynamic left him looking like the odd man out, and the ballad “thing” didn’t seem to give him room to flex his musical muscle. The technically skilled guitarist, John Frusciante, who rejoined the band after a five-year hiatus during which he nearly killed himself on heroin, seems to be the leading force behind the new sound. As a whole, they felt as if they were each in their own worlds, not quite pulling all their varied personal directions together into one cohesive whole. Feeling the band’s lack of enthusiasm, and hearing their soft, safe “oldies” sound gave me this scary feeling that it was all over. Tears welled up in my eyes as I thought, “Did my generation fizzle out?” The Chili Peppers grew up and now their music is a nostalgic look back on the bitter-sweet past. Their thoughtful reflections hold some sentimental value, but are not groundbreaking. Commonly, there comes a time in a long career where shifts like this occur, and my overall feeling is that these guys want to take it further, want to evolve into a more mature incarnation. Sometimes, in getting to that next musical plateau, it’s inevitable to pass through some rough spots; maybe this tour represents that awkward in-between period on the way to a higher evolution. In my heart, I haven’t completely given up the chance that the Peppers can pull it off, however this time around, the “Red Hot” label just doesn’t seem to fit. Whatever happens next, for better or for worse, in my memory you will forever rock!

and did their encores in their underwear. They were sexy; they were red hot. Everyone was left buzzing, radiantly alive and madly in love with these insane, funked-out, bad boys. In contrast, last week, at the Blaisdell, I felt more like my mom, going out to see the Rolling Stones. Let’s face it, seeing Mic Jagger up there today pulling a groin muscle in his efforts to keep-up-the-pace is just not quite the same as seeing them in the 60’s and 70’s. Hearing the Chili Pepper’s new “sound” does show that at least they are exploring new directions rather than repeating themselves. However, their current musical choices sound suspiciously close to Motown standards complete with vocal harmonizing. You have to question weather it’s really innovative. They came off sounding more like the Beach Boys or the Beatles, than Red Hot. Before the show started, the crowd was already stage diving, even without music, showing their obvious enthusiasm to get the mosh-pit going. However, once the music began, the excitement of slamming gave way to subdued rhythmic swaying. Lead singer, Anthony Kiedis seemed overly self-conscious on stage. He paced back and forth looking for ways to play up to his star image, rather than simply playing up to the music itself. His vocal range is more developed than ever, thus the harmonizing. Flea, on the other hand, has managed to hang onto something genuine, along with his trademark spastic-goofy-persona. However, a bassist alone doesn’t carry the show. The overall

Moana Bakery and Café

Central Maui

Moana Bakery and Café onions, mushrooms and cheese definitely hit the spot. I also sampled the north shore saimin with fresh udon noodles, fishcake and egg in a light dashi broth. Clearly satisfying! I was too full to try a pastry from their tempting display, but I stopped and perused them anyway just to please my eyes. Moana is tucked away just up Baldwin Avenue and easy to miss but it’s definitely worth the stroll to enjoy their roomy, air conditioned atmosphere. I look forward to sampling Chef Scott’s medallions of filet mignon and the

Paia’s Hidden Gem

Weekends on the north shore have just dramatically improved. You see, a friend of mine dragged me out of bed at the crack of noon last week to share his discovery with me. Moana Bakery and Café is now offering fabulous brunch until 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, perfect for my kind of Maui lifestyle. I was just happy to find a place that served breakfast so late and expected ordinary, run of the mill fare. I was proven pleasantly wrong. I ordered the Blackstone omelette with bacon, sautéed mushrooms and cheese. Safe, dependable, easy, I thought. I’ve learned that a lot of cute little restaurants overreach themselves and produce meals that just don’t quite come together, usually at my expense. I wanted something simple. What I got was simply elegant. Crisp bite size chunks of bacon, tender mushroom morsels seared just right to retain their moisture and rich melted cheddar holding it all together in a light, fluffy fold of egg. These guys know how to cook breakfast! Their home fries achieved that remarkable, nearly impossible balance of crispy outside, tender inside and full herb-roasted flavor. Don’t pass the ketchup please, not needed here. My wife couldn’t resist the crab cake Benedict and I couldn’t resist stealing bites from her plate. Crispy creamy crab cakes on toasted English muffins with just the right amount of velvety lemon Hollandaise. Incredible! Steamed jasmine rice is the perfect complement to this lush, hedonistic feast. And just how do you cook rice so perfectly? I want to know. Emboldened by my first experience I went back the next day with the urge to try something more adventurous. The chili seared Ahi wrap with mango pineapple salsa sounded like just the thing but I needed to have another omelet to prove to myself that they could do it again. They did. The Maui omelet with char siu pork, caramelized Maui

Surfer Girl

Endless Summer Chic Flick Dives For Pearls Blue Crush — Two Stars Screenwriters Lizzy Weiss and John Stockwell (director) predictably fail to capture the magnetic pull of big waves that director John Milius struck with “Big Wednesday” (1978), the granddaddy of all Hollywood surf movies. For as truthful as the writers attempt to stay to a code of surfing rituals as lived by three Oahu dwelling surfer girls, the movie hits a schism of reality when real-life women surf champions enter the movie as guardians of the flame (so to speak). Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth - “Remember The Titans”) is a champion level surfer preparing for a Pipe Masters competition where winning means a sponsorship that can lift her from her menial existence as a hotel maid — a job she shares with her roommates Lena (Sanoe Lake) and Eden (Michelle Rodriguez - “Girlfight”). But romance threatens Anne’s lifelong dream to be the best surfer in the world when pro football quarterback Matt Tollman (Mathew Davis - “Tigerland”) takes an interest in surfing. “Blue Crush” is just what it seems, a summer fantasy surf movie for the 12 to 15 year-old female set.

“Blue Crush” spends so much time showing bodies twisting under the churning water of crashing waves that, at times, it seems like a cautionary film against surfing. There’s so much recurring flashback footage of Anne Marie hitting her head on an underwater reef in a surfing accident three years previous that the audience is programmed for disaster every time the camera goes under the water’s surface. The motif comes to serve as a boy-who-cried-wolf element that weakens rather than sustains suspense during the surfing sequences. Everyone knows that surfing is dangerous, but most also realize that ‘wiping out’ is an integral part of the sport. The point is that it’s more entertaining watching surfers ride waves than being blended around inside of them. The movie opens with Anne waking up for

rule women’s surfing in real-life, it comes like a slap in the face that this lovely half-hearted little girl could be prepped for surfer stardom as some kind of lipstick cover girl. Even when Anne Marie goes out to compete on the big waves, it takes the encouragement of an experienced elder female surfer to give Anne the proper impetus to paddle for the giant wave that gives her the blue room ride she’s been looking for. Although a lot has been made of Michelle Rodriguez’s casting in “Blue Crush,” with Sanoe Lake’s name barely mentioned although she’s prominent on the poster, it’s Kate Bosworth’s effortless naturalism and divine sensuality that invigorates the movie. Ms. Bosworth’s dual-colored eyes and lush lips propel the movie with a charm and synergy that fitfully accents the action at hand. It’s no wonder that Ms. Bosworth was cast as the ideal little surfer girl, it’s just too bad the ideal had to be tested against the considerably less feminine reality of the sport.

a dawn patrol surf session that gets squished into more of an 11 AM day-at-the-beach. Just when we expect to see Anne paying some solo early morning dues a week before her big competition, she’s gathering up her roommates and getting razzed by her former boyfriend before she ever even hits the water. Later in the story, when Matt asks Anne what it is that she wants, the first thing out of her mouth is to see a woman on the cover of Surfer magazine. That’s fine and dandy, but men dominate the sport because guys are the ones putting in the overtime on the waves. This is where a Hollywood ideal of a bikiniclad surfer girl clashes with the reality of leather skinned women surfers who shake the sand out of their spring wetsuits. While Anne’s surfer roommate Lena is played by Sanoe Lake, a real-life surfer, she barely gets any screen time on the waves, with Anne Marie’s obvious surf double taking up most of the slack for Kate Bosworth. When the Pipe Masters competition finally rolls around and we see the older and considerably tougher women who

The Long And Winding Toad I’m a 25-year-old gay guy who’s just ended a relationship with my 28-year-old boy friend of 14 months. We’d been living together for about the same time we’ve been together. We still care for each other, but we discovered that we just have too many differences. My problem now is that he owes me a lot of money. We opened a business last year, and all the capital came from my savings. The business failed, and all that remains is his $10,000 debt — the money I need from him to pay back his share. He promises that he will do his best to make payments, but I know it will be difficult for him because he has a lot going on, and he barely makes ends meet with his weekly income of $400. Finally, he’s still living with me because his money situation is restricting him from moving. How can I, under the circumstances, get through the whole breaking up process with a minimum of pain and suffering? —Separation Anxiety It’s time you put the “separation” into the “separation anxiety.” Yes, fundamental to recovering from a breakup is...actually breaking up with someone. If only it were as simple as that song, “I’m gonna wash that man right out of my hair,” which never gets into how, exactly, you’re supposed to accomplish this if “that man” is still stuck, like used chewing gum, to your living room couch. What’s actually keeping your should-be ex-roommate from rushing out to apply his adhesive qualities to someone else’s furniture isn’t his “money situation,” but yours; namely, that yours includes enough (give or take $10,000) for him to live in the manner in which he’d like to remain accustomed. In lieu of rubbing him with ice, then chipping him off with a paint scraper (this worked wonders on the gum on my lavender pants), inform him that he needs to start looking at your apartment in a whole new way — as a place he’ll be vacating at the end of the month. To show him that you’re a man of your word, back your word up with other words — words like “Glass! Fragile!” and “24 Jars Of Skippy” — found on empty boxes, perfect for packing his stuff, that you yank out of the dumpster behind the drugstore. When he leaves, be prepared to wave 10,001 times. Once to him. Yes, I’m suggesting what you think I’m suggesting — that you not only break up with him, but with the money he owes you; at least in your head. Sure, there’s some infinitesimal possibility that you’ll see that cash, just as there’s some infinitesimal possibility that you’ll see me in the starting lineup of your favorite pro-basketball team. That said, it’s best that you look at that $10,000 in a whole new way — as 10,000 little green reminders that Happy Hour and The Move-In Special do not mix. See, when you first meet someone,

it takes just moments to see how compatible you are: “Wow, what a coincidence! We both wear shoes!” It takes much longer — like a year — to find out exactly how incompatible you are. After you put the “ex” (as in “exit”) in the ex-boyfriend, take time off to learn from your mistakes. You won’t be ready to date again until you adopt a thinking approach to relationships, as opposed to your old wishful thinking approach; one which turns on the classic horror movie model: “Gee, Janet, we could either drive back to the diner, or we could open this dark closet and see if they’re right about The Oozing, Four-Headed Slasher.”

Age Slaves I’m a 21-year-old classical music composition major, working part-time at a law firm. I’ve fallen for one of the paralegals, a woman 13 years older. She and I take smoke breaks at the office, and talk a bit outside of work. We’re both leaving the firm soon (I’m finishing my undergrad work; she’s completing her masters). She sometimes makes mention of our age difference — stuff like “Jeez, I keep forgetting that you’re such a baby!” after I admitted to having no clue about some obscure ‘70s band. Is 13 years too much of an age difference? —Generation Y Not Me? Because this 34-year-old woman’s still in college, there’s a good chance that her area of inquiry doesn’t include questions like, “If it’s called a biological clock, how come it doesn’t come with a snooze button?” This, in turn, increases the chance that she’ll consider getting involved with a guy who seems likely to pick her up for dates on his skateboard. No, you aren’t going to have the sophistication of some guy who’s twice or three times your age; then again, you won’t have his Viagra prescription either. (c)2002, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved.
