A NATION OF ONE

Tahiti Fete 2002 Hawaii Group Sweeps Awards

The Fifth Annual Maui Tahiti Fete procession The 5th Annual Maui Tahiti Fete was a great opportunity to experience Tahitian dance and drumming to your heart’s content. Two days, 14 hours (not all of it performance…no hurries here…), 5 groups and dozens of solo dancers from around the state competed for prizes in various age groups and categories. Plus, there were booths of Tahitian food and wares to checkout between performances. This year included a Royal Procession by a Tahiti-based group led by Chief Tavana Hare Salmon, who is credited with reviving ancient ceremonies and temples in Tahiti. Chief Tavana, along with 4 other experts, judged keiki and adult competitors on authenticity, costume and overall presentation. In addition to numerous talented soloists and even an award winning Tahitianstyle tribute to September 11th, Fete goers witnessed notable presentations by Mauibased newcomers, Te Tiare Patitifa, lead by Keoni Manuel. This spectacular group not only exhibited their enthusiasm and talent for

t radition, but slipped in a few original, modern elements that had the audience, and judges, captivated. First, their emotional Senior Division, Ahupurotu, complete with princess and her court, dazzled judges and the crowd alike with their flawless grace. Keoni’s singing lifted the performance to unexpected heights. Even the judges were seen wiping teary eyes. The group was rewarded with first place and a Tahitian Banjo. Then, the group awed the audience with an exciting Aparima and Otea Combined Dance. The vibrant red, orange and yellow costumes complete with chrome Tiare flowers drew everyone’s attention; the choreography and energy of the performance had ‘em cheering. In the excitement, the MCs had to keep themselves from losing their objectivity, but let slip “Spectacular!” The group was awarded 2nd place for their Aparima and 1st prize for their Otea. When asked why he chose chrome flowers, Keoni explained that the traditions are important, but to draw young people into the traditions, dance and music need to include modern ideas. “I believe that music and dance are a bridge to upcoming generations, but they need to be able to relate to the past. I like to bring new things into our traditions, this way people are awakened from their ordinary way of seeing things. I’m not trying to upset traditions, I am trying to get your attention.” And that they do. For all their hard work TeTiare Patitfa was ultimately awarded the All-Around Grand Prize of a To’ere drum.

Where is the Hawaiian nation? I know where one is, he is my son Russell Keaokalani Monlux. He is 15 years old, and he is on the big Island of Hawaii. Until last week he was in the custody of the Child Protection Services of California due to an error in judgment on the part of his mother 3 years ago. He is a good child, and has not been in trouble with the law. It seems that is about to change now as he has escaped from California and made his way back home to the Big Island. The California system wants him back, so they can continue to collect a federal paycheck for his care. They claim they are in the process of reuniting him with me, but until now it has been all talk and no action. I make the following statement to the State of California, and the United States Government, on behalf of Myself, my son, and all my HawaiianAncestors. I claim sanctuary for My child on the ground he now stands, which is his ancestral land that was illegally annexed by the government of the United States of America. I do not recognize any authority of the State of California or the United States of America regarding the custody of my child. By birthright he is a member of the Sovereign Nation of Hawaii, subject to their laws and customs, and will not be returned to the State of California under any conditions! I pray that the Hawaiian People will stand behind his cause and the cause of Hawaiian Sovereignty, until which time he will stand on his own as a Nation Of One. Lance Nailima Spencer Monlux

Food composting reduces greenhouse gases To the proven benefits of composting, we can add one more: reduction of greenhouse gases which many people believe contribute to global warming. According to the November, 2000, issue of Resource Recycling, “If the 21.5 million tons of food residuals generated annually were composted instead of being sent to landfills, this would result in a reduction of about three million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents in greenhouse gas emissions. This is equivalent to taking more than two million cars off the road.” Composting is easy to do and is problemfree when done right. Compost creates rich soil and stronger plants, using free and available resources. It reduces environmental damage such as erosion, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides and increases the life of necessary landfills. If you’re composting your food waste, yard trimmings and waste paper at home, thank you. If you’re still sending all that stuff to the dump, please consider doing the right thing and look into the many simple, inexpensive ways to set up home composting. Joy Webster

our only choice, we need open primaries and a chance to hear our voice. We need non partisan patriots as candidates, but telling the truth can be an eerie fate. The waste, fraud, and corruption in the federal, state & local governments, write a protest letter, & off it should be sent. 2002 an election year, so why not a lot of big cheer? Could it be the voters are dissatisfied, initiative, referendum, and recall have all died. Sometimes you hear the elections are crooked, democrats and republicans are in the same bed. Everyone wonders who has the trump card, voters be aware and be on guard. So looking @ the elections of 2002, don’t be surprised to find anyone new. A.E. Skipton, Makawao

OPINIONS By Travis Henderson

THE NEVER-ENDING QUEST FOR THE ALMIGHTY TOURIST DOLLAR Two new sitcoms might be coming to Hawaii as network studios point the “hip” finger at the islands. And you can bet that the city council and state tourism authorities are just chomping at the bit to make sure these shows do in fact get here. The results are obvious: increased spending from production crews, new jobs for locals, and the massive exposure for the state. I can just see it now; Hawaii is the “cool” spot once again and visitors come from all corners. Property values will rise which means local property owners will see their taxable worth rise, making them think they’re rich. The tax receipts for the state will rise making City Council members think the city is rich. Hotel and restaurant revenues will go through the roof, which will bring in hungry investors looking to infiltrate and take advantage of the hot market. Massive expansion is just around the corner for the islands. But then the stars of the sitcoms will get old and the public will stop caring about them. Or maybe they will get too big for their britches and hold their star value over the heads of the producers in an effort to get more money. If they’re like the “Friends” or “West Wing” cast, they’ll hold their collective star power in one hand and basically guarantee themselves whatever money they want. Then the show’s writers and directors will want equal pay because, after all, they helped create this hot new show in this hot new market. And everyone will get their money, which will create an even bigger allure for the show because it now has the highest paid cast and crew whom only the best shows have, right? Meanwhile, Hawaii basks in all the glory. But then one of the stars gets busted for drug abuse or spouse abuse or some kind of abuse. The whole cast and crew will come out in support of this person as he or she tearfully enters rehab to come to grips with the costs of their meteoric rise to fame brought on by the amazing success of their Hawaiian sitcom. Even the governor of Hawaii will come out in support, saying that all of Hawaii stands behind the production of these shows. But the magical spark will have been tarnished and the chemistry tainted after a decade of sweetness. The next request for a pay raise will be politely but firmly denied and when the stars threaten mutiny, the producer’s will smile and sadly shake their heads. The shows were fun, they were successful, but they’re coming to an end. The network’s “hip” finger is being pointed somewhere else. Meanwhile, Maui has six new high-rise hotels still under construction after work was delayed for three years because of never-ending traffic problems and the subsequent stalling in the county council for the re-zoning permits. Local residents have been on a spending spree from all the money they earned while the spotlight

was on Hawaii but as the visitor numbers begin to decline for the first time in the ten year (if we’re lucky) duration of the sitcoms, income and spending declines as well. We’re now heading for a statewide recession. So keep in mind in the coming years, as you watch whoever controls the governor’s mansion take credit for the re-invigorated economy, that the sitcoms will come to an end as the stories burn themselves out. But have no fear, the quest for the almighty tourism dollar never ends.

“NEW WORD” ALERT Ladies and gentleman, the new word for the day is Quadrary. I have looked through Webster’s dictionary and the Oxford Dictionary and have not been able to find it; therefore I am making it up myself. I am defining Quadrary as “The fourth successive occurrence after Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary.” Is this word already out there? Possibly, but I couldn’t find it and I needed something to define the negative impact the media can have on ordinary people. Take for example an ordinary person who suddenly makes it famous for some irrelevant reason. This person is in a huge spotlight and everybody wants a piece of him. The media outlets are going crazy trying to get information from this person’s childhood friends, college dorm buddies, etc. A lot of the stories are totally fabricated because people tend to exaggerate their relationship with famous people when presented with an interview request. The famous person is the Primary recipient of this media glare. He knows the truth and therefore he can pick and choose what he wants to believe. His immediate family represents the Secondary recipients and they are a little more susceptible to the media’s lies but at least they have immediate access to the Primary recipient, which gives them access to the truth. The Tertiary recipients are the friends and co-workers of the immediate family. They are the ones who brag about their connection to this famous person even though they really only know the famous person’s brother. But nonetheless, they breathlessly read the papers for something to fuel their connection. The Quadrary recipients are the friends and co-workers of the Tertiary group and they have absolutely no connection to the Primary. However, they’re close enough to the scene to be able to fake a relationship. Sure enough, after a few beers, their lips are loose and they’re detailing stories they heard from their friend who knows this famous person’s brother and swears that this person was caught with his pants down in the company of a farm animal. This person, the one-man rumor mill, is too far removed from the situation to accurately describe it but they are close enough to fake it, therefore people listen. This is known as the Quadrary effect and it represents all that is bad amongst people.

NEWSOFTHEWeIrd LEAD STORIES Plastic surgeons told The Wall Street Journal in August that requests for designer navel and nipple surgery are increasing (probably brought on by the skin-revealing tops women wear), with slim, horizontaloval navels preferred (a preference also found by panelists in a 2000 surgical journal article), and firm, prominent nipples seen almost as an “accessory” for the excitingly dressed woman. (Almost all such U.S. surgery is in conjunction with tummy tucks or breast enhancement, but navel sculpting as stand-alone surgery has been popular for several years in Japan.) Update: In July, a Texas district judge ruled that any professional thoughts that software engineer Evan Brown had in his head during his 10 years with DSC Communications (now Alcatel USA Inc.) belonged to the company even though they may never have been expressed in any tangible form. (News of the Weird reported DSC’s filing of this lawsuit in 1997.) Brown had signed a contract agreeing that DSC owned any “invention” or anything “conceived” on the job but said he actually began thinking about his high-level source code solution 12 years before he started work at DSC.

Marie, Ontario, in July: “I don’t know why (I did it).” And Ms. Rie Fujii, 24, pleading guilty in Calgary, Alberta, in June to abandoning her children while she partied: “I don’t know why.” And Darlene Eva Gallant, 41, sentenced to two years in prison in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, in May for maliciously injecting her grandson with insulin: “I hurt someone more precious than my life, and I don’t even know why.” And pharmacist Robert Courtney, pleading guilty in Kansas City, Mo., in February to diluting customers’ cancer drugs: “I keep asking myself, ‘Why?’ ”

The several African nations’ soccer teams that rely on witchcraft to give them an edge were confounded at this year’s World Cup when Senegal almost made it to the semifinals after supposedly rejecting that strategy and competing solely on ability. Teams from Ivory Coast and Mali have been in the news this year for their relentless black-magic beliefs (e.g., animal parts buried on the soccer field at midnight; hexing spells by witch doctors on a team’s sideline). In February, a Cameroon assistant coach was dragged off the field by Mali military personnel after he was suspected of wielding a lucky charm.

The traditional, manure-based “Many Weed Tea,” taken by generations of rural black families in Alabama as a cold and flu remedy, is fading away despite continued testimonials to its effectiveness, according to a June Birmingham News story. Its recipe calls for forming a tea bag of cloth and filling it with two open lemons, stalks of the lavender plant, honey and several dried cow patties, preferably containing visible, undigested leaves and twigs. The brew is supposedly safe for humans provided that it is boiled long enough before steeping.

It’s Hard Being an Animals Rights Activist Aztar Corp. casinos in Evansville, Ind., Atlantic City, N.J., and Las Vegas have recently featured tic-tac-toe games in which gamblers compete with chickens that punch in X’s and O’s with their beaks, and in June, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made a formal protest, both of the oppressive conditions under which the chickens labor and the “disrespect” of the chickens that the game represents. Also in June, traveling Alaskan circus artist Emily Harris had her expensive bicycle mistakenly sold while she visited a second-hand shop in London, and the resulting news stories called attention to her particular circus art, which is that she hypnotizes chickens and makes them play a piano.

Least Justifiable Homicides Taketomi Miura, 30, was arrested and charged with killing a newspaper carrier, allegedly because Miura thought that a murder conviction would help obscure the shameful fact that he had been embezzling from his employer (Tondabayashi, Japan, June). Shane Sloan, 29, was convicted of killing his mother, supposedly because he was angry at her for interrupting his suicide attempt (and Sloan indeed killed himself in his cell 10 days later) (Pittsburgh, June).

Also, in the Last Month ... A 15-year-old girl won a talent search by “jumping” rope 100 times while seated (by raising her butt for each pass) (Keller, Texas). Witnesses said a 39-year-old youthleague soccer coach rushed onto the field during a time-out and aggressively elbowed the other team’s star player (an 11-yearold girl) in the stomach (but the league has specific penalties only for coaches who attack referees) (Mississauga, Ontario). A 44-year-old man, angry that a check he was expecting didn’t come, beat up the postal carrier (Shreveport, La.). A catwalk collapsed at Aquarium of the Americas, sending 10 VIP visitors into a tank with 24 sharks (but which, fortunately, had just been fed and were docile) (New Orleans).

For all of those parents out there who take their kids surfing and expect great photos by the end of the class, it would be great if you pulled your heads out of your you know where and tried to remember that the photographer you keep standing in front of every other three minutes is most likely taking shots of your kids!! If you don’t want pictures of the back of your head, but you do want pictures of your kid surfing, then look around you and step aside. So the next time some tourist tells me they have to stand right in front of me when I am taking shots of 20 people in 35 minutes, I might just shove this camera up your big fat ass!!! So don’t bitch to me about having to step aside, just take a step off of you cant see the big picture. Signed: Frustrated by Ignorance

Get ready, Maui. You are about to enter the realm of microphone mathematics and musical masterpieces. Elevating styles and masterfully infusing Hip-Hop with the rhythms of Jazz, Funk, Soul and Reggae, these turntable virtuosos will drive you into a hypnopompic frenzy. Only this crew can break the beat down to technical precision, and combine it with the DJ styles to blend and scratch and maintain a dynamic level of entertainment that is explosive and excites you with their musical palate. Pulse-pumpin’ beats and soul-drivin’ rhythms. The Beat Junkies, yeah...Are you feelin’ the vibe?

The Rap Sheet J-Rocc, Rhettmatic, Babu, Melo-D, “DJ What?!,” and Curse comprise the current Beat Junkies lineup, all of whom collaborated collectively in Los Angeles during the early ‘90s to innovate and create Southern California’s first turntable band. Together, they defined fresh new flavor and unique musical formulas, known internationally as the “Beat Junkie Style”, transforming the DJ artform throughout the world and influencing such artists as The Invisible Scratch Pickles. In 2001, J-Rocc, Rhettmatic and Babu, showcased their electrifying turntable compositions while completing an eight-week, 45-city tour

throughout the United States entitled “Wordof-Mouth”. Representing the Beat Junkie Style on stage, and in the company of Hip-Hop masters Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples and MC Supernatural, the tour was so highly anticipated and well received, that it sold out in several major cities. In 2000, Curse, Melo-D and “DJ What?!” became the house band of a USA network television show called Jimmy & Doug’s Farmclub.com., thereby making their mark in television history by becoming the first DJ crew to claim a permanent band position on a national program. The variety show also featured world renowned solo artists Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, as well as, No Doubt, Everclear, and Kid Rock. J-Rocc and Curse furthered their musical explorations on KPWR- Power 106 FM, the #1 urban radio station in L.A. Their daily mixdowns and weekly shows infiltrated the Los Angeles Hip-Hop scene, validating the authenticity of the Junkies’ Freshness. Currently, DJ Melo-D acts as President of Beat Junkies, Inc., the independently owned and operated corporation created to tackle the assortment of Beat Junkie projects. “DJ What?!” produces weekly and monthly Hip-Hop, Reggae and Jazz events. Babu and Rhettmatic each share their turntable talent with two commanding Hip-Hop bands that undoubtedly achieved a towering level of success the past two years; Babu, a leading figure of Dilated Peoples, and Rhettmatic, a major force of the Visionaries.

Eyes on the Prize Beat Junkies are consistently highlighted in leading publications, including URB, Rolling Stone, The Source, and Mass Appeal. The group earned numerous individual and team awards, including the title of International Turntablist Federation (ITF) World Team Champion in 1997 and 1998, making the Beat Junkies the first and only turntable band to capture and defend this celebrated title two consecutive years. They were also ITF USA Team Champions in 1997 (Babu, Curse and Melo-D), and the Vestax Team World Champions in 1996 (Babu and Melo-D). The vigilant digilantes are also featured in two prized films that achieved recognition and extended media coverage at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival in Utah, including “Scratch”, and

these turntable virtuosos will drive you into a hypnopompic frenzy “Keepintime” (2001), a documentary created to exemplify the parallel between the art of original drumming and the art of drumming using a turntable as the musical instrument. Breaking further ground is the group’s self-operating, independent record label, Beat Junkie Sound, which launched the album “Classic Material” last year, a collection of various works by Beat Junkie artists, and special guest DJs, including Curse, D-Styles and Shortkut, as well as other musical recordings ranging from scratch music compositions to tracks combining the talented skills of both DJs and MCs. This album presents notable musical arrangements hailing from a number of celebrated releases including, “Soundbombing” (Soundbombing 2- Bumrush Brothers featuring Dilated Peoples and Tash), “He Likes To Concentrate” (W.F.B.J. Vol.2- Melo-D and D-Styles), and “The Audition” (The Funky Precedent- Rhettmatic). Versatile turntable talent reinforces the identity and reflects the essence of each artist’s personal design and audio illustration of the world renowned “Beat Junkie Style”. Expertise in the area of production consistently shows the gifted excellence of individual Beat Junkie musicians, such as Rhettmatic’s “From The Ground Up” featuring T Love, LMNO and Divine Styler as the Associates (W.F.B.J. Vol.20), J-Rocc’s smooth, rhythmic instrumentals on “Degration” (Unbound Project), and Babu’s musical genius for “Service” featuring Raaka and Evidence as Dilated Peoples. These three embarked on a major cross-country and international concert tour following release of “Classic Material,” slated “Sight and Sound.”

Maui’s Team Green The Beat Junkies join Team Green, a collective effort by young members of the community who are conscious of Maui’s growing litter problems, in hosting “Hip-Hop on the Rocks” at Hapa’s on Thursday, August 29th. Team Green is a litter initiative formed at the start of 2002 by Moosehead Beer and Redline Entertainment, which has adopted Kalama Park and is actively participating in various community clean up projects. “Hip-Hop on the Rocks” with the Beat Junkies, featuring DJ J-Rocc and DJ Melo-D, will be LIVE and off-the-hook at Hapa’s, Thursday, August 29th. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Not a bad price to pay for witnessing collaborative chemistry resulting in a platform of perfection for your auditory pleasure, eh?!

The calmness of the morning gave us clean, glassy, and fun conditions for this year’s Ole Long Board Classic, which was held at Launiupoko Beach Park on August 17th 2002. The scene at Launiupoko was reminiscent of many fun filled summer days. Contestants were everywhere. Their boards were strewn across the park, along with coolers filled with cold ones to combat the rising heat, and beach chairs to relax between surf sessions. Keiki ran everywhere, and there was a mellow feel to the day due to the constant flow of music accompanying murmurs and laughter of people talking story. As I sat enjoying the music and the overall pleasantness of the day, the competitors kept things entertaining, practicing headstands, switch stance, toes on da nose, milking the waves for everything possible. The contest heats started at 7am and ran through to 1:30 pm. There were two peaks that the competitors were assigned to surf at, the Lahaina peak and the Kihei peak The contest had ten divisions to compete in, the open men, open

Mr. Sub

Little Sub Shop creates Huge Sandwiches palate, Mr. Sub has plenty of salads too. Most of the time you picture salads as a light lunch choice. Not so here, salads are a real meal. Try their chef’s salad ($5.75); for example, plenti ful roast beef, turkey, ham, Swiss, and cheddar grace the top of a heaping pile of crisp green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, and sprouts, inside of a take out container so full that won’t close, so it must be saran-wrapped shut. Other stom ach stuffing salads include the chicken salad, chicken Greek, Chinese chicken, Caesar salad, and garden salad ($3.25 to $6.75). Still can’t decide? Mr. Sub has a wide array of wraps, a twist on the sandwich, more like a cross between a burrito and salad. You can get a jalepeno, plain, spinach, or garlic herb tortilla, engorged with smoked chicken, grated carrots, shredded lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and creamy ranch dressing for just $4.75, just ask for the Chicken Ranch wrap. Other wraps range from the chicken salsa to the Greek to the garden burger and all range from $4.75 to 5.50. Mr. Sub recently added soup to menu to further their diversification. You will also find nachos and burritos on the menu ($5.50), as well as sides like their tasty spinach rolls, fresh baked cookies, homemade pasta salad, chips, pickles and carrot & celery

There is a little sandwich shop on Lahaina luna Road that is famous with lunch goers in Lahaina. You could say it has a cult following. With every cold cut imaginable from chicken to salami and a bounty of fresh garden vege tables it is easy to see why. Mr. Sub is tucked in between the Wolf Camera and the Lahaina Inn, and provides much more than just its namesake: the sub. Mr. Sub has over 15 specialty sandwich es with popular delectable choices like “The Surfer’s Club” ($6.95) with Turkey, Avocado, Provolone Cheese & Sprouts, or the “Opu Buster Hawaiian” ($7.95) with Danish and Virginia ham, turkey, pastrami, salami, provolone, Swiss, and spices. Each of these specialty sand wiches are piled high with lettuce, tomato, onion, and your choice of dressings. And when I say piled high it is no joke, you will wonder how to take a bite. If you would rather design your own sandwich, you can choose from tuna, egg salad, pastrami, chicken salad, roast beef, ham, turkey and salami ($4.25-$5.95), or any two for $6) with plenty of cheese, vegetables and dressings to add to it, not to mention the fresh baked breads available. You can order _ sandwiches of any style too. As if that is not enough to please your lunch

Maui’s World Premiere Garners National Attention Hanau Ka Moku receives over $100K in Grants Hanau Ka Moku, a groundbreaking Hawaiian dance drama that will make its world premiere at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center August 23 and 24 has earned the attention of several prestigious arts organizations because of its tremendous cultural significance. Support both state wide and nationally for Hanau Ka Moku has raised over $100,000, to create the production and ensure that it will tour on the mainland. Produced by the Edith Kanaka’ole Foundation, Tau Dance Theater and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Hanau Ka Moku melds traditional Hawaiian hula and chant with modern dance to celebrate the fire goddess Pele and the cycles of creation. This intersection of Hawaiian tradition and western movement has earned significant grants: $35,000 from the Doris Duke Fund for Dance of the National Dance Project, a program administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Philip Morris Companies Inc., $30,000 from the Baciu Fund of the Hawai’i Community Foundation, $20,000 from Cooke Foundation, Ltd., $15,000 from The Charles Engelhard Foundation, $10,000 from Jean E. Rolles, and $5,000 from the Atherton Family Foundation. Hawaiian Airlines, the Xerox Corporation and Aloha Mixed Plate have all stepped up with in-kind support. “Something of great importance is hap pening and being recognized not only here, but nationally as well,” said Karen Fischer, Managing Director at the MACC. Hanau Ka Moku tells the story of the creation and the birth of Lo’ihi, the under sea island forming off of Hawai’i Island. The production is a landmark artistic colla

boration of two of Hawai`i’s preeminent dance organizations: Halau O Kekuhi, led by Kumu Hula Pualani Kanaka`ole Kanahele and Nalani Kanaka`ole, and O’ahu’s Tau Dance Theater, led by founder and Artistic Director Peter Rockford-Espiritu. Its goal is to do no less than create new Hawaiian “legends” – the chants and stories that get passed down through the generations. The production features new chants and danc es created in the traditional style by Kanahele and Kanaka’ole, although they acknowledge they are “pushing the envelope” within hula traditions. Tau Dance Theater places modern dance vocabulary side by side with the vocabu lary of hula movements. The chants will not only be in Hawaiian, but also translated into a poetic English. This blending of traditional Hawaiian art forms with modern dance lends itself to the produc tion’s theme of creation and rebirth. Kanahele

and Kanaka’ole are using the narrative tools of today – traditional art forms and contempo rary expression – to place current happenings in a broader historical context. These are the stories that will be told by future generations in much the same way as the Kumulipo or the Pele chants are handed down. Hanau Ka Moku will make its world premiere and only scheduled appearance in the state at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24 at 7:30 pm. Innovative in concept and production, this exciting drama may well become a modern Hawaiian classic. Preshow festivities begin at 5:30 pm and will include sales of fresh flower lei, Hawaiian arts and crafts, food and live entertainment. Tickets are $50, $35, $20, $10, and 1/2 price for kids 12 & under. Call the MACC box office at 242-SHOW (7469) for more information.

With one of the fullest and most impres sive resumes in dance music, Dave Ralph is also on of the most loved characters in the music industry. Dave has guaranteed his place in the hearts of millions by pro viding clubbers with set after great set of unbelievable tracks and unforgettable nights. Turning his back on the snobbery sometimes associated with the dance com munity, he has been influential in breaking down the barriers within the music and crossing genres in the spirit of good times and dance floor music. Dave Ralph will grace Maui’s shores at Casanova’s in Makawao on Friday, August 23, 2002 spinning a frenzy of mesmerizing tracks promoting his latest DJ production “Naturalized”, his new double disc mix cd. “Naturalized” consists of over two dozen tracks blended together as a flow ing, seamless, and invigorating sonic land scape including works by Slyder, Da Hool, Deepsky, Laurent Garnier, and Starecase just to name a few. His own opening track, “Islands of Light” serves a prelude for his next release, an all-original album. Although Ralph feels recording his own material is definitely a priority at the the moment, stating, “I’m much happier mak ing my own music than DJing,” however, fans need not panic yet. Ralph is still appearing regularly as a DJ all over the world, from Alaska to Spain, and the DJ bug is still biting. Dave says, “The DJing has been an amazing part of my life, to just stop and give it up is quite daunting. There must be a cut off point when you stop con necting, but I’m not there yet!” Dave Ralph maintains increasingly popular residencies at some of the best clubs in the country, including Buzz in Washington DC, Axis in Boston, and Evolution in Philadelphia.

Blinded By Science The Masses Meet Their Digital Maker Simone – .. Viktor Taransky (Al Pacino - “Insomnia”) is a washed up art film director when, out of the blue, a perishing computer nerd passes him a self-made computer program that digitally constructs a perfect actress in writer/ director Andrew Niccol’s unbalanced celebrity satire. Similar intone to Niccol’s script for “The Truman Show” (directed by Peter Weir), ”Simone” suffers from the same flat delivery of a dimensionally shallow plot. The hugely popular art movies that Taransky makes in complete privacy with his “Simulation One” (“Simone”) program are the weakest link in a chain of indigestible quasi-pop achievements that repeatedly crack the film’s plot structure. As Taransky measures his new found success against hisability to regain his ex-wife (played by Catherine Keener) and teen-aged daughter, the masses of the world embrace his digitally constructed “Simone” as their ultimate larger-than-life heroine. The scenes with Simone (played by an unnamed Canadian actress) were filmed in 24 frame-per-second High Definition digital and blended with the rest of the film’s 35-MM footage, giving the story a cold undertone of self-mocking irony.

The main premise for “Simone’s” theme rests on Taransky’s idea for melding together the most prominent facial features of actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman to create a puffy lipped model to rival Angelina Jolie in the bee-stung lip category. She’s blonde, she’s vapid, she’s frequently nude (although never shown), and she’s a hoax that audiences of the world fall for as if she were the new Madonna and Michael Jackson rolled into one. The problem is that we, this film’s audience, are never allowed to share in Simone’s persuasive charm because it’s not really there. It’s the old ‘Emperor Has No Clothes’ routine and we’re supposed to nod our heads in agreement about how ‘realistic’ and ‘seductive’ Simone is, when the model is nothing more than a glorified blow-up doll. “Ah, but that’s the whole point,” I can hear

personal world of the spectators looking in on Truman’s reality television show, here we barely get defining elements of Taransky’s personality, mush less what attracts Simone’s obsessive fans. When Taransky single-handedly produces a live musical concert for Simone to sing hits from her new album, it’s completely unbelievable because we know it would be impossible for one person to logistically execute such a feat. Taransky is supposedly still hopelessly in love with his ex-wife Elaine, but for as much as I admire Catherine Keener (“Lovely & Amazing”) as an actress, she is not a woman you could imagine Al Pacino falling for, much less swallowing his pride over. Keener is a brittle actress capable of playing the most cunning and divisive anti-heroines. She’s a highbrow Lara Flynn Boyle, but she’s definitely not the mother of your child to whom you’re eternally faithful and trusting. Like the Ed Harris character in “The Truman Show”, Elaine is an opportunist and a backstabber. I suppose that, at least, exonerates our digital heroine Simone from any possible wrongdoing. If only that were the case for Andrew Niccol.

Andrew Niccol saying. If, indeed, that is the point, then why shouldn’t I pick up a copy of Vogue magazine and put my engaged imagination to use about what makes beautiful women tick rather than watch a movie that invites me to be entertained at my own stupefaction for a mechanical female model. Fritz Lang already did that in a much more interesting and political way with a little movie called “Metropolis” some 76-years ago. Enough about Simone; this is supposed to be an Al Pacino movie. Pacino’s character is an Oscar-nominated director who gets fired by his studio exec ex-wife in the opening scene. Although Taransky professes to be still inspired by the work of John Cassavetes, his own abstract films look more like car commercials mocking Russian avant garde film styles of the ’60s. It’s the farthest thing from Cassavetes’ passionate grab for hyperrealism that you could get. That may seem like splitting hairs, but it’s germane to Niccol’s recurring problem of generalizing his subjects with a stagnate brand of post-modern satire. Just as with “The Truman Show,” where we barely got an impression of the

Me, My Selfish, And I I have a very good male friend I do a lot of things with. I can see that he likes me very much and wants to pursue a relationship with me, but he just doesn’t do it for me as a boyfriend. Recently, he went away for a month. While he was away, I put a lot of effort into meeting guys who are boyfriend material. There are two, at the moment, that I think might be possibilities. What should I do about my friend? If he finds out I’m “on the market,” he’ll be very upset. If one of these possibilities becomes a reality, it will break his heart. Either way, I’m likely to lose a very good friend. — Friendly Quandary What happened? Your ego wanted to adopt a dog, but you decided to get it a man instead? Now, men do have their merits, such as the ability to distinguish between $300 Sergio Rossi pumps and a $3 rawhide bone. Most will only bite the FedEx guy under extenuating circumstances. And most will even go that extra 1/500th of a mile to get a glass of water from the kitchen, instead of getting down on all fours and slurping from the toilet bowl. Not only do many men make great pets, they can be wonderful friends, too. Of course, I don’t have to tell you this, since you refer to the person you’re writing about as your “very good male friend.” Unfortunately, as far as what he gets from you in return for his friendship — well ...with friends like you, who needs ... goldfish? You’ve got this poor guy puppy-dogging after you. Like the eighth-grade class geek, his pickup moves are probably indiscernible from a certain medical condition remedied with Metamucil and crates of prunes. Probably as long as you’ve known him, he’s been sneaking glances skyward, waiting for the clouds to open up and reveal a big, lighted thumbs-up sign — the signal that it’s finally his moment to be with you. His secret, of course, is no secret to you. If only you weren’t so busy enjoying the ego massage, you might have grabbed a crowbar, pried yourself out of your laziness and self-interest, and told him your secret — that you’ll be his girlfriend sometime in Early Never. Evidently, you’re one of those people who will do anything for your friends — anything that doesn’t cause you even the most microscopic emotional or physical inconvenience. That makes you not much of a friend — that is, unless you define friendship as something like “having somebody to stand next to me on the street so people won’t think I’m nuts when I talk to myself.” (Isn’t that what cell phones are for?) Real friendship is something very much like a love relationship, but without the sucking face. Loving isn’t something that hits you over the head like a flowerpot. It’s something you do. The same goes for being somebody’s friend. It’s an activity; an active concern for

your good intentions and efforts. Aggressive pressure leaves in a week.

somebody else’s happiness. It sometimes involves unpleasant tasks, such as meting out the awful truth — “On my hot list, you fall somewhere between Bilbo Baggins and rotting produce” — or rather, as little of the truth as it takes to train the puppy boy to start panting after somebody who’s a possibility for him. If you love something (but don’t lust after it), set it free. If it comes back to you, whack it with a rolled up newspaper until it gets the message.

Rapid Wait Loss My relationship with the guy I’ve been seeing for the past year hasn’t progressed at all — it feels like perpetual dating. I’m 34, and I want more at this point in my life, but it appears that he, at 39, does not. I know it’s time to call it quits, but I’ve been holding onto the dream of what could be and denying the reality of what isn’t. Can you give me any good breakup tips other than the obvious “Just do it!”? — Stall-Minded If you frequent nursing homes, you probably hear a lot of old people croaking stuff like, “Youth is wasted on the young,” not, “I wish I’d spent more time cleaning out the lint trap in the dryer.” If you aspire to be like them, keep up the good work. Time flies while you’re having a really mediocre time with a guy who won’t give you what you want. It shouldn’t be all that long before you’re hunched over the canasta table, complaining that life is wasted on the alive. The alternative is living as if you could, at any moment, be crushed by a falling piano...recognizing, at the same time, that you’re highly likely to make it to tomorrow with a skull that’s piano-bench free.
