LettersTothe Editor Home Sweet Home Online Hello there from Houston Texas. I just want to say how much I enjoy reading the Maui Time Weekly Online, it really brings me up to date on events and news on the island. I’m going to medical school here in Texas, and it makes me home sick to read so many wonderful stories of home. Aloha from Texas, or should I say Howdy! Matt Landry, Texas
About Linda Lingle With reference to Lingle’s booklet, “A New Beginning”, and the last section, “About Linda Lingle” (pg. 26-27). I have several questions about the information provided in the booklet. Birth Data? Your booklet says; “Linda Lingle was born in St. Louis Missouri in 1953”. I am led to believe that Lingle is your birth name, but you say your father is Richard Cutter of Cutter Management Co., making you a part of a very large Hawaii Company, which Business Hawaii magazine rated #16 of the largest 250 in Hawaii (August 2001). I feel you left out information in the booklet about your past history. Voters (taxpayers) need to know backgrounds of candidates for public office, as people want real change, not another rubber-stamp/cookie-cutter candidate. A.E. Skipton, Makawao

ForceFed IT’S NOT A GOOD TIME FOR JOKES? It seems that a couple of medical students of Muslim descent were sick and tired of the discrimination they’ve faced since 9/11 so they decided to create a hoax in Florida to ‘scare’ people. What do they do? They go into a diner and talk loudly enough for those seated around them to hear about plans to blow up something or other on Friday the 13th. A lady sitting nearby overhears something like “Do you think it will be enough to bring the whole building down?” and gets scared. She quickly calls the cops and the ensuing search-and-seizure shuts down a major freeway heading into Miami for 17 hours. The guys say it’s just another example of racial profiling and call the woman’s statements a lie. Was it inflammatory Muslim rhetoric meant to be a joke or was this a case of racial profiling? It’s hard to decide but I’d say they tried to backpedal once they realized they were in over their heads. Especially considering they admitted at the end of the ordeal that they had wanted to teach Americans a lesson, which is why they provided no answers for the entire 17-hour ordeal. Not only was this woman simply being a concerned citizen, but these guys are extremely lucky that it was a lady who overheard them and not a lifelong subscriber to Soldier of Fortune. This nation is walk-

ing on pins and needles as it is and we don’t need people walking around making jokes of the situation, regardless of what they’re going through. Do they think that our lives have gotten better as a result of 9/11? At the base of the issue seems to be their appearance. But while these guys, and other Muslims, are going through a tough time of public disapproval, they have to realize that the men responsible for the terrorist attacks wore distinctive clothing that these guys are now wearing. If at any time during WWII somebody had walked the streets of any Allied nation wearing a Nazi uniform, they would have been attacked immediately. This isn’t much different. I understand that long beards and turbans may be the standard dress, but it seems that many Muslims choose to prove their loyalty to Islam through their dress rather than their words. The medical students involved in the hoax said that “Americans should read a book or two” but at the same time, they don’t stand up and condemn the terrorists for bringing down Islam. It would greatly help their cause if they stood up in their Muslim outfits and stated loud and clear for everyone to hear that the true believers of Islam were rejecting the terrorist activities. In essence, if they stood up and drew a distinctive line between Islam and terrorism that the Western world could identify with, they might help alleviate the discrimination. And until Americans have a definitive way to tell between the good guy and the bad, appearance is going to play a huge role.
GET OUT OF MY FRONT YARD! In case you’ve been wondering what all those strange people have been doing along the roads holding up signs and waving at nobody in particular like those little puppets you stick in your rear window that you get when you fill up with gas, have no fear. It’s election time again. So besides those obnoxious signs littering front yards every block or so and those long lines of political supporters, you also get to endure political advertising commercials that insult your intelligence. Commercials like Linda Lingle’s that have “random” supporters professing their allegiance to her campaign because “she will improve our economy so we can all have jobs” or, “she will improve our school system so our kids can get a better education.” Now, I’m not anti-Linda Lingle by any means because the Democrats will say the exact same thing, but what does it all mean? How is Linda Lingle, or any new addition to the Governor’s Mansion, going to improve our economy? Is she going to convince people on the mainland that a vacation in Hawaii is affordable even though their 401(k) has lost half its value? Not to be too pessimistic, but our economy lives and dies by economic stability of the mainland, and the rest of the world for that matter, by virtue of our reliance on the tourism industry. The only way to improve our economy is to improve theirs and I don’t see Lingle, or any politician from Hawaii, being able to do that. But then again, she’s just trying to get into office, not help us with reality. How is she going
to improve our school system? Is she going to say all the right things like “We need to improve our teacher’s pay”, or “I’m going to give teachers the supplies and tools they need to create an effective classroom?” The only supplies the teachers need are students who want to learn and parents who actually care. The highest paid teachers and best classroom supplies cannot overcome debilitating indifference, not if the kids refuse to break out of their molds. Lingle’s first step to do this would be to get kids to accept proper English as a form of communication and not just a symbol of white oppression. Does anyone remember the Ebonics problem in the Oakland school district? Ebonics is a form of ghetto slang and the Oakland School Board thought it would be easier to incorporate the teaching of Ebonics into their curriculum rather than convince the kids that proper English was not their enemy. It seems the inner-city kids thought that to use proper syntax and pronunciation made them sound too “white”. Well, Pidgin is like Ebonics in the sense that it allows a group to identify with one another (in this case it allows locals to differentiate between themselves and tourists). Unfortunately, at the same time they limit themselves by creating their own special category. To identify yourself with a group is one thing but to separate yourself into a special category can be like putting yourself in a box. And that leads to isolation.

Can You Buy A Mayor’s Job? Arakawa, Parsons Far Behind Apana in Fundraising; Hope Their Ideas Will Carry The Day In the race to be mayor of Maui, incumbent James “Kimo” Apana is the Goliath and challengers Rob Parsons and Alan Arakawa are the Davids. It’s hard to imagine how they will overcome the $711,000 Apana has raised in campaign contributions since he was elected in 1998. By contrast, Arakawa has raised $56,548 and Parsons less than $10,000. The fourth candidate, Bill Riddick, is almost a non-candidate, with even less money raised. In fact, Apana will have to turn over more in improper donations -- $14,400 - which is more than Parsons has raised in campaign contributions, according to Bob Watada, head of the state Campaign Spending Commission. Watada says that the

Campaign Spending Commission sent the Apana campaign a letter August 26 demanding $14,400 that was improperly donated to the campaign. The $14,400 will go to the Hawaii Election Fund. Geolabs, the Kalihi-based engineering firm behind the improper donations, was fined $64,000 for various campaign violations, including false name contributions, says Watada. They were found to have improperly contributed more than $127,000 to several campaigns, including Apana’s. Watada says the $700,000 Apana has raised is unusually large for a Neighbor Island mayoral election. “I can’t think of a mayor’s race in recent years where that much money was raised,” says Watada. He says many of the same construction industry players support Apana as have supported other big money campaigns. Only two candidates will advance to the general election.
Theoretically, it could be two Davids, but it will likely be Apana and someone else. “We knew it was going to have to be a grass-roots campaign,” says Parsons, who hopes to cross the $10,000 mark so he can qualify for another $10,000 in state campaign funding. The majority of his donations are under $100. “I know one thing, come September 22 we will win in terms of votes per dollar spent.” Arakawa says he, too, is running a grass-roots campaign, with most of his donations coming from individuals contributing $100 or less. “I have only a half dozen or so contributions over $100,” says Arakawa. “I’m banking on the fact that the public wants honest government, not one that’s bought and paid for.” While the mayoral contest is non-partisan this year, it wasn’t in 1998, when Apana defeated Alice Lee for the Democratic nomination and went on to beat Arakawa, the Republican, by only 2,500 votes. According to the state Campaign Spending Commission, Apana raised $258,000 in that election cycle. Arakawa raised about $166,000, less than Lee, who raised $185,000. Apana has stayed closely tied to the Democratic party. His fundraising efforts got a boost in 1999 when the Maui County Democratic Party gave his non partisan campaign $25,000, according to the Campaign Spending Commission. Arakawa didn’t receive any money from the Republicans. Since that time, Apana has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, most of it from Oahu firms and individuals. At a candidates’ forum in Kula, he said he didn’t know how much he raised until he read it in the paper. Apana said the reason businesses and individuals from Oahu were supporting his candidacy was because they thought a run for Congress or maybe Lt. Governor was in his future. Arakawa says he has no such ambitions. “My love is Maui County,” he says. “I’m not thinking any further ahead than that.” Candidates who seek election to another seat within four years can carry over excess campaign contributions from their last campaign, says Watada. Since Apana still has $243,350 as of September 6, it seems likely he will have money left over following the election. The difference in the size of the candidate’s war chests is apparent in many ways. The size of the candidates’ campaign headquarters, for instance. Apana and Arakawa are both located in the Kahului Shopping Center. That is where the similarity ends. Apana’s headquarters is probably five times the

size of Arakawa’s, with boxes of T-shirts and other election paraphernalia spread out throughout the building. It is large enough for ballroom dancing, one of the recent activities held there by the Apana campaign. Arakawa’s headquarters is small, with campaign flyers - his own and Republican gubernatorial candidate Linda Lingle’s - on a table. Parsons campaigns out of his home, as does Riddick, presumably. One of the biggest advantages of money is being able to buy public relations and advertising. During the period from July 1 to September 6, Apana’s biggest expenditure was $10,000 for media ad production. That was out of $97,633 in expenditures for that same period. To try to keep their name and ideas in the public eye, both Arakawa and Parsons have tried to take advantage of free exposure. “We have not bought much advertising,” says Arakawa. “We’re using what free media we can.” That includes Akaku public access cable television appearances and candidate forums. He also does a weekly radio show that he does pay for. Parsons says he has made a half dozen or so appearances at various events where he has been able to make his views as a candidate known. He has made use of the letters to the editor section of the paper, as well as having written an opinion piece for a local newspaper. “Actually, that’s a really effective way to campaign,” says Parsons. Maybe. Still, it is hard to overcome Apana’s money. Apana has appeared at most of the candidate forums as have Parsons and Arakawa. But he has also held a variety of his own events throughout the county, complete with doorprizes. From a movie night in Hana to Kimo’s Keiki Fun Fest in Makawao, Apana has been able to put out the grinds and entertainment. At Kimo’s Keiki Fun Fest Days held September 7, a trip for three to Disneyland was one of the doorprizes. Pony rides, a magic show and train rides rounded out that day. The difference in money is overwhelming, but the three candidates also have differences in a variety of substantive matters. For Parsons, one of the biggest differences is illustrated in the Makena development in South Maui. He opposes it for a variety of reasons, including the impact on traffic and water such a large scale development will have. “Both Kimo and Alan support it,” says Parsons. Parsons is in favor of completely re-examining Maui’s rapid development. He favors solid long-term planning and making Maui more self-reliant, both

in terms of food and energy. He wants to diversify Maui’s economy, so that it isn’t so dependent on large-scale tourism. Parsons says he was instrumental in stopping a big development in Spreckelsville. Arakawa says he wants to run on his record as a council member. His biggest accomplishment? “Trying to correct things the mayor has done wrong,” says Arakawa. Apana raised community center rental fees from about $60 to nearly $1,000 in some cases, says Arakawa. “We got the community center fees lowered.” He says the council has raised money for county roads in every district in the county and has accepted the beach access the state has been trying to give the county. Apana points to a variety of accomplishments. He says Maui County has the lowest real property tax rates and the highest bond rating in the state. He abolished landfill fees and took other measures during the dengue fever crisis. Apana’s money enables him to buy ads and hold events pretty much at will, while the other candidates have to conserve their money. Arakawa is betting that he makes it through the primary, as he has several ad buys reserved for the general election. He hasn’t even held a fundraiser yet, choosing to wait until after the primary. For Parsons, he needs to campaign furiously to make it to the next level, which means spending contributions as fast as they come in. The campaign process is part of a larger picture for Parsons. If he doesn’t win this time, he figures he will have advanced his ideas and maybe influenced some people to stop what he sees as runaway growth on Maui. For Arakawa, the campaign has been on his mind since 1998. He has been aware all along that Apana would likely outspend him. Arakawa feels that it is unlikely Apana didn’t know how much money he was raising or where it was coming from. “He’s lying if he says he doesn’t know about it,” says Arakawa. “It doesn’t happen by accident.”

Field will be narrowed after primary —By Don
Maui voters will decide the political fates of a host of candidates during this Saturday’s primary election. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some polling place will have changed from the last election, says County Clerk Roy Higa. He says about 20 percent of the polls will be located in different places, largely due to reapportionment. People should call the Clerk’s Office at 270-7749 before Saturday if they don’t know where to vote. There is also a voter hotline at 800-442-8683. “Kihei and Kula have changed drastically,” says Higa. There has been an increase in early walk-in voting as well as more absentee ballot requests, he said. A common mistake some voters make in the primary is to cast votes for candidates in more than one
political party, Higa says. The front of the ballot has the partisan races and they are color coded. You can only vote for candidates in one party in the primary. The back side of the ballot has the non-partisan races. While council seats have residency requirements for the candidates, county voters vote on all council positions, regardless of where the voter lives. There are several local races of interest. Most of the nine Maui County Council positions will be decided in the general election, as they only have two candidates, but three council races will need to be narrowed to two candidates. The non-partisan mayor’s race will also be narrowed to two.

VOTE! SATURDAY, Federal, state and county offices on the line in Saturday’s election In the state races, there will a winner-take-all Democratic primary for the District 4 seat currently held by Jan Yagi Buen. She faces a challenge from newcomer Shan Tsutsui and Thomas Cerizo. Since there are no Republican candidates, the winner of the primary wins the seat. Buen upset Roz Baker in the Democratic primary in 1998 and went on to win the seat. Buen, a former Maui Electric Company special projects coordinator, faces a surprisingly tough challenge by Tsutsui, who is a financial adviser at UBS PaineWebber in Wailuku and co-owner of Keiki Time in Kahului. Cerizo owns an insurance agency. The District 4 senate district now covers Kahului and Wailuku. The new configuration dropped Lahaina, Molokai and Lanai and picked up more of Kahului. According to the 2000 census, there are 42,688 residents. According to the census, a quarter of the people are Filipino, a quarter are two or more races, 17 percent are Japanese, 15 percent Caucasian and 9 percent Native Hawaiian. Republicans will choose between former county Board of Ethics chair Don Couch and Dr. Ben Azman
for the District 5 senate seat, which includes West and South Maui. The winner will face Democrat and former senator Roz Baker in the general election. The District 6 senate seat is held by Democrat J. Kalani English, who will serve his second full term, as he is unopposed. For the state House, there will be two races where a primary election is necessary to narrow the field. District 10 is a newly aligned district that gives West Maui its own House seat for the first time. Republicans Brian Blundell and Patty NagasakoPeterson will vie to be their party’s candidate, who will face Democrat Jim Rouse in the general election. Blundell, a small business owner, says he is running because of his interest in access to education and health care. Nagasako-Peterson says her roots on Maui go back more than 100 years. She says she is running because change is needed in state government. The newly configured District 13 is a canoe district and the biggest House District in the state, encompassing east Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe. Sol Kaho’ohalahala and Frances Segundo want to be
the Democratic candidate who will face Ron Davis in the general election. Kaho’ohalahala is a former Maui County Council member and state representative. Segundo is making her second try for office, after losing a close primary race in 2000 for the District 10 seat eventually won by Republican Kika Bukoski. She is a clerk-stenographer at Maui Community College. Kaho’ohalahala was defeated by Davis in the last election in the old district. The new district is more rural and doesn’t include West Maui. There are four Maui County Council races where the field will be narrowed to two for the general election. The Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu seat currently held by Dain Kane is being sought by four people, including Kane. Mark Smith, Natalie Kama and Sunny Gutierrez also want the job. The Kahului seat currently held by Alan Arakawa will also have four candidates. Arakawa is running for mayor and won’t seek reelection. Herman Andaya, D. Mele Carroll, Nick Casumpang, Jr. and Joe Pontanilla will be on the ballot.

VOTE! SATURDAY, The South Maui seat held by Wayne Nishiki is also being contested, with G. Lehua Clubb and Zandra Souza-Amaral also seeking the job. Nishiki is seeking reelection to his fifth term. Five candidates are seeking the Molokai residency seat on the county council, held by the late Pat Kawano until his death earlier this year. Danny Mateo was appointed to the seat by the current council. He will seek to be elected outright, as will Stacy Helm Crivello, Maria Hustace, George R. Kahinu and Beverly Pauole-Moore. The mayor’s race is also non-partisan, with four candidates, including the incumbent, James “Kimo” Apana. He will face council member Alan Arakawa, small business man Rob Parsons and Bill Riddick. (See cover story, page 6.) In the race for Governor, the Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians will select their candidates. Since Natural Law party candidate Jonathon Adler was sentenced on a marijuana conviction and can’t hold office, Maui’s Kau’i Hill (Bu La’ia) will
advance to the general election as the Natural Law candidate. Leading Democratic candidates include Mazie Hirono, Ed Case and Andy Anderson. Big Island tour van operator Joe Fernadez, George Nitta, Jr., of Honolulu and Art Reyes of Waipahu will also appear on the Democratic ballot. Linda Lingle is the front runner on the Republican side, with John Carroll and Crystal Young also running. Libertarians will choose either George Peabody of Molokai of Tracy Ahn Ryan of Honolulu to be their candidate. In the race for Lt. Governor, 13 candidates are registered, including three Republicans, four Democrats and two Natural Law candidates. On the national scene, Hawaii’s two U.S. House of Representative seats are up for election. Democratic incumbent Neil Abrcrombie gets a pass in the primary as the only candidate of his party, as does Libertarian James Bracken, but four
Republicans will seek the GOP nomination. Stephen Bischoff, Harry Friel, Mark Terry and Opassi White all want to go to Washington D.C. as the U.S. District 1 Representative. Hawaii’s other Democrat incumbent, congresswoman Patsy Mink, has been hospitalized since August 30. She is in intensive care in serious condition. She developed pneumonia after being first hospitalized for chicken pox. Since her family hasn’t made her condition public, it is unknown if she is conscious. Her Democratic opponent Stave Tataii has pulled his election ads. Republicans will choose between Bob McDermott and James “The Ump” Donovan. Libertarians will select either Lawrence Duquesne or Jeff Mallan as their candidate for the District 1 Congressional seat.

(“(That’s) kind of like selling sky boxes,” said a Notre Dame theology professor; a Loyola Marymount University professor defended the steep price, saying, “I don’t think that the poor are terribly worried about where they are going to be buried.”) While Chile copes this month with the first murder in 15 years on its remote Easter Island (pop. 4,000; 2,370 miles from the mainland), Great Britain was reportedly preparing to build a jail and a courthouse on Easter’s closest neighbor, Pitcairn Island, after investigators from Britain and New Zealand said they suspected as many as 20 of the 47 residents had engaged in sex with children. According to a July report in Britain’s The Guardian newspaper, if charges are eventually filed, trials might be held on Pitcairn or in New Zealand using a special satellite video hookup from the island.

Everyone who lives in Hawaii knows that the guy who had his eye poked out was attacked because he is white. You know it and “eye” know it! I’m not some malahini, like the guy complaining about the bugs in Waikapu. I’ve lived here for 30 years and have seen this stuff time & time again. The culprits are always duly punished; but there is never a mention of “hate crimes” when it’’s a white guy! Come on! Am I to be punished for what Sanford B. Dole did 100 years ago? (That’s the liberal rationalization) Unfortunately, that kind of “understanding” is of little comfort when your damn eye is hanging out. This issue reminds me of how child and spouse abuse was looked at 40 years ago– i.e. not spoken of. Hey! Remember the guy who got attacked in 1985 in the back of Moose’s (Lahaina)?! Well, he’s still a quadriplegic. Sincerely, A White Guy

Maui Chefs Present: A Garden of Eatin’ Fundraising Event a Decadent Splendor I spent an evening wining and dining this past Friday the 13th by the sands of Ka’anapali Beach under a beautiful tropical moon. The occasion was the 10th annual Maui Chefs Presents, the opening event for A Taste of Lahaina, and it was themed “The Garden of Eatin”. Fourteen Maui Chefs were gathered together to present culinary creations relating to an ethnic garden theme, complete with accompanying wines and live music. I expected a true garden setting with pathways leading to lush oases of Dionysian splendor where I might indulge myself in untold pleasures. I hoped to glimpse an angel or two picking at harps, divans with lounging goddesses being hand-fed grapes, and maybe even a stray snake. What I experienced had a more commercial flair, indicative of the resort area within which it was held. The food booths were arranged in a large horseshoe with banquet tables strewn through the center along with three bars serving wine and beer. The live bands consisted of a few scattered musicians who were difficult to hear, although the drums I heard do stand out in my memory, and the fire dancer at the Tropica station deserves mention. There were lines to wait in at each booth, and while I was made aware of the appropriate wine to accompany each dish, I was not willing to wait through an even longer line to enjoy them together, although many others did. I decided to focus on tasting everything I could, and heavenly food was certainly available. I believe I experienced original sin while sampling Sansei’s Lobster Shumai with Spicy Orange Butter Citrus Sauce. I can’t decide if they were better than the
on a summer stroll through the countryside. The Garden of Eatin’ was a definite success with hundreds of people turning out to celebrate and feast on this late summer’s eve. As part of the fundraising weekend-long event, Taste of Lahaina, Maui Chefs helps to generate thousands of dollars for Maui youth, various school and community groups. While the “Garden of Eatin” will vanish by the end of the evening as my memories and food digest, the monies raised by this fine event will benefit generations to come. My glass was raised to them that fine evening as I wished to stroll through this garden paradise again with a little more elbow room and a lot more time. And maybe a little Snake Flambé?
Tempura Scallop Lollipop with Namasu and Miso Butter, but the two together definitely gave Sansei my award for culinary excellence. The Banyan Tree Restaurant at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua really blew me away with their surprisingly delicious, innovative offerings. Their Frog Leg Confit with Fleur de Provance was quite a flavorful surprise, but nothing compared to the Savory Truffle Custard served warm in an eggshell, complete with a tiny spoon to scoop out tiny bits of ambrosia. I’d never had anything like this and I made sure to eat several to impress them into my memory. The Ka’anapali Beach Hotel served Wild Boar Spring Rolls and a Smoky Soy Tenderloin with Maui Onion Glaze and Pohole Fern Salad. These were both artfully presented and pleasing to the palate. Fish & Game’s Chilean Bay Scallop with Curry, however, was all eye-candy. Nicely presented in its own shell on a bed of rock salt
with confetti of savory seeds and spices, this dish proves to me that “artsy” can be too much. The tiny breaded scallop was the only edible thing on the plate. Haliimaile’s Beef Tender loin with Vegetable Salad and Pickled Ginger and the Green Papaya Salad with Candied Prawns were run-of-the-mill and Tropica’s Pele’s Fire Stick was nothing to get hot about. James McDonald of Pacific’O/I’o fame provided tasty comedic relief with his Buckshot Quail with Roasted Beet Weed Whacker Salad. His beet-dyed jumbo couscous reminded me of wild berries discovered

The Moon Festival
Moon Cakes, Martial Arts & the Full Moon at the Wo Hing Temple in Lahaina The Chinese festival known as the Moon Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth moon of the lunar calendar. In western calendar terms that translates to a celebration this Saturday, September 21, 2002. At this Autumnal equinox the moon is said to be at it’s brightest. This tradition of the Moon Festival dates back over 1,000 years to the Song Dynasty. The Moon Festival, also called the MidAutumn Festival is one of the 3 most important festivals observed in Chinese culture and Maui’s own Wo Hing Society brings those traditions to Lahaina at the Wo Hing Temple this Saturday complete with Chinese Lion Dance, moon cakes, and demonstrations of Kung Fu, Tai-Chi, and Chi Gung. The Moon festival celebrates families and friendships as they gather together on this day to watch the moon. As with many holidays and celebrations the Mid-Autumn Festival is accompanied by a special food, a Chinese delicacy aptly called the moon cake. The traditional moon cake is a baked pastry about 3 inches across in the shape of a circle, filled with lotus seed paste and a salted egg yolk in the center. Nowadays the moon cakes can be found with a variety of fillings from red bean paste, mixed nuts, dried fruits, ham, and winter melon paste, just to name a few. While it may be difficult to find a bakery on Maui that carries moon cakes, the Wo Hing Society will be providing them at the festival. As with most cultural holidays there is a legend to be remembered with the Moon Festival. It is said that at this time the mythical moon goddess, Chang-O is honored. This legend is traced to the year 2000 B.C. where Hou Yih, an officer for the imperial guards and expert archer, was summoned by the emperor to shoot down 9 of the 10 suns in the sky. The great skill

that Hou Yih demonstrated in this matter led the Goddess of the Western Heaven to favor him with a pill that would bring him everlasting life. Hou Yih stashed the pill at home, where his beautiful wife Chang-O found and swallowed it. Her subsequent and immediate punishment swept her off of the earth and straight to the moon for eternity. Chang-O’s beauty enhanced the brilliance of the moon with her radiance and now people gather together on the moon festival in awe of her. This time also marks the end of summer harvest, and is a time to show thanks for the bounty of the land, similar to the American Thanksgiving. God Save The Republicans – We Mean It, Man Anti-Imperialistic Blockbuster Hits With Finesse The Four Feathers — .... Set in 1875, during Imperial England’s hegemony heyday, “The Four Feathers” tells a tale of one man’s personal quest for peace and marriage in the face of his country’s orders to fight Sudanese Arabs in the name of the Queen’s Empire. If Britain’s vain 19th century attempts to control a sector of the Muslim world resonates with America’s current push to tell the Middle East what time it is, then so, too, does Heath Ledger’s character Harry Feversham inevitably reflect curiously on former American Taliban soldier John Walker Lindh. Harry resigns his regiment’s commission after announcing his engagement to Ethne (Kate Hudson) but finds himself unable to endure the humiliation of being disowned by his father and viewed a coward by his comrades and fiancée, each of whom give him a white feather — a symbol of his cowardice. So Harry goes off alone to North Africa’s treacherous Sudan in search of honor, pride and the company of British soldiers he trained beside, only to be swallowed up by a culture he can barely fathom. Director Shekhar Kapur made a splash in 1994 with the critically well-received Hindi
film “Bandit Queen,” based on the true story of Phoolan Devi, a child bride sold into marriage who later becomes the leader of a band of outlaws who have kidnapped and raped her. Shekhar went on to direct the Oscar-winning “Elizabeth” (1998) with an unabashed visual sleight-of-hand that underscored the dark layers of hypocrisy seething beneath the Queen’s hard won throne. With “The Four Feathers” — by co-screenwriters Michael Schiffer (“Colors”) and Hossein Amini (screen adaptation of “The Wings of the Dove”) — Kapur deftly pinpoints levels of fear and social pressure that induce people to make deluded decisions that only exacerbate the very problems sought to be avoided. At the film’s start, Harry is an agile rugby player, respectful soldier and son of a famous military commander, with a bit too much common sense to abandon his future by going off to fight for England’s expansion in a remote and unpredictable land. But even Harry’s strong sense of individuality can’t hold against the condescending glare of his betrothed love once she perceives him as a coward. It’s here that the shaming rhetoric of humiliation constricts Harry like a giant

The Four Feathers slithering python. However, Harry still retains enough insolence to suppose that he can redeem himself as a clueless WASP wandering in the middle of a desert filled with 40-story sand dunes and people who want to kill him merely because he speaks English. An ill-fated association with a French pimp en route to the British regiment’s camp in the Sudan leaves Harry on death’s doorstep in the middle of an isolated desert where Abou Fatma (Djmon Hounsou - “Gladiator”), a kindhearted slave, rescues him. Harry soon works as a nearly unrecognizable slave for the very regiment of British soldiers he trained with as he attempts to assist his onetime comrades with Abou’s support. “You English walk with too much pride on the earth,” Abou tells Harry; it’s a sentiment that resonates in the accurately brutal desert battle sequences that occur. When Harry sends Abou to warn his erstwhile regi-

ment about an ambush that awaits them at a supposed British fortress, the Brits assume that the black man is telling a “tall tale” and set about whipping him for his efforts. The Sudanese attack that follows finds the relatively small troop of British soldiers fighting with false bravado on all sides from within a pitiful square formation that soon collapses in bloodshed. Apart from the film’s remarkably high production values, is its compound subtext that suitably comments on everything from the swerving loyalty of women to the futility of countries attempting to impose military law on other cultures for capitalist gain. As an individual interloper, Harry endures a journey into the belly of a beast that he doubtless would not have survived had he gone with his regiment. In pitting his divergent fears against one another, Harry comes to realize that fear is a constant element of the bargain in life. The subtle irony is that this revelation comes primarily to Harry’s best friend and soldier Jack (Wes Bentley – “American Beauty”), and to Ethne who each carry scars as deep or deeper than the man who refused to fight for an imperialistic empire.

An intimate family portrait of three resilient women, a mother (Brenda Blethyn) and her two daughters (Catherine Keener and Emily Mortimer) and the bittersweet lessons learned “raising each other”. The LA Times praised it as: “Funny and Charming! Like the best of personal, independent cinema -- it is both marvelously observed and completely individual. There is no film like this film, and that is something you don’t hear every day. A surprising, moving portrait of contemporary womanhood.” Also starring Raven Goodwin, Jake Gyllenhaal and Dermot Mulroney. Rated R. 89 min. Presented by Maui Film Festival and MACC. Tickets:$7 w/MFF passport. $10 single.
New This Week Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever - (Not Rated) - Action/ Adventure - Haunted by the mysterious death of his wife, reclusive former FBI manhunter Jeremiah Ecks (Antonio Banderas) is blackmailed back into service to track down an unstoppable ex-DIA operative, code-named Sever (Lucy Liu), who has kidnapped the young son of the head of a secret committee of international security agencies. The Banger Sisters - (R) - Drama, Comedy - In the late ‘60s, it would have been hard to find a rock star who didn’t have Suzette (Goldie Hawn) or Vinnie (Susan Sarandon) on his arm or attached to his leg. The self-proclaimed belles of the rock ‘n’ roll ball rocked the worlds of every music legend whose pants they could take off – and they have the pictures to prove it. But it’s been more than two decades since The Banger Sisters earned their nickname – or even laid eyes on one another. Vinnie is now Lavinia – a prim, suburban mother, wife, and pillar of the community, more at home at a garden party than a mosh pit. Suzette is still her brassy self – plus a few tattoos and a remarkably increased bust line. When Suzette’s world comes crashing down, she sets off in search of the one friend who might be able to rescue her, or at least give her a few thousand bucks. The reunion of The Banger Sisters is the collision of two women’s worlds: one who’s living in the past, and one who’s hiding from it. Together they learn the value of living in the moment. Barbershop - (PG-13) - Comedy - Calvin (Ice Cube), who inherited a struggling barber shop on the south side of Chicago from his father, views the shop as nothing but a burden and a waste of his time. After selling the shop to a local loan shark, Calvin slowly begins to see his father’s vision and legacy and struggles with the notion that he just sold it out. The shop is filled with an eclectic cast of characters that share their stories, jokes, trials and tribulations. Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer) is an old barber with strong opinions and no customers. Jimmy (Sean Patrick Thomas) is a highly educated barber with a superiority complex who can’t stand Isaac (Troy Garity), the new white barber who just wants a shot at cutting some hair. Ricky is an ex-con with two strikes against him and is desperately trying to stay straight. Terri (Eve) is a hard-edged woman who can’t seem to leave her two-timing boyfriend. Then there’s Dinka, a fellow barber who is madly in love with Terri but doesn’t get the time of day. Trapped - (R) - Suspense/Thriller - The perfect crime is, perhaps, the crime that is never reported. Some criminals seize control of their environment so convincingly, and cover their tracks so effectively that they leave nothing but terrified victims -- so shocked that they retreat into silence, grateful to have their lives back. These are the unfortunate victims of Joe and Cheryl Hickey (Kevin Bacon and Courtney Love), who along with Joe’s cousin Marvin (Pruitt Taylor Vince), have orchestrated and refined a foolproof plan to extort money from wealthy families. They’ve preyed upon helpless families with confidence, skill, and success. But this time, they picked the wrong family - a family that chooses to fight back and take control of a terrifying ordeal that is spiraling towards an unthinkable outcome. Also stars Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron.

Crafted by filmmakers dedicated to the sport, Blue Crush brings together world-class surfers in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes, and features some of the best sequences of women surfing ever captured on film. She meets Ian , a non-Greek teacher, and falls in love with him, but fears that her strong family heritage will ultimately undermine their relationship. one hour photo - (R) - Suspense/Thriller - Photo development is a responsibility Sy Parrish takes very seriously. A person’s life, after all, in its simplest terms is nothing more than moments strung together from the second of birth to that final instant when the last breath is drawn. Sy Parrish treasures these moments more than most people do. If anything, or anyone, should disrupt or interfere with Sy’s perception of the picture-perfect family, a family he feels so very much a part of, then he too feels the intrusion. Just as he takes responsibility for preserving the perfect moments, he feels obligated to correct the imperfect ones...

TheAdvicegoddess My boyfriend of 10 months has had a female best friend for six years. They’ve never dated, but they share many interests. She’s a warm, friendly person, and I like her, so the three of us hang out occasionally. My boyfriend also spends a lot of time alone with her, and although he never hides this, I feel threatened by their relationship. I’ve tried to get into the stuff they’re interested in — herbal medicine and crystals and things — but really, it would be a feigned interest on my part. I feel they’re soulmates, and any day, will profess their undying love for each other — even though my boyfriend has professed his undying love for me, and goes on and on about wanting to marry me. Still, last week, when I watched those two talk at a party, it took everything I had not to leave in a total rage. Do I tell him how jealous and angry I feel? Or do I go with my fear that they’ll someday realize they love each other and break up with him before our relationship goes any further? --Friend Forecaster Welcome to The Age Of Specialization. These days, it takes more than one person to meet another person’s needs — unless that person has only one need: to sit cross-legged, until they die, in a hermetically sealed room, staring at the other person. Since you aspire to be one man’s own personal desert island, you’d better forget about “just being you.” Consider hiring some writers — a diverse team — to script everything
Yourhoroscope ARIES [Mar. 20 - Apr. 19] - An adviser has good advice concerning financial matters. Be sure to heed it. Later in the week, tact comes to your rescue when dealing with a difficult situation. TAURUS [Apr. 19 - May 20] - You have something on your mind as the week begins. However, wait a bit before speaking out. Bigwigs are more receptive toward the end of the week. GEMINI [May 20 - June 21] - A pushy individual could invite himself over to your home. Don’t be shy. Let this person know that it’s not convenient and leave it at that.
LEO [July 22 - Aug. 22] - You strike just the right balance this week between family and work. A child needs help with a school project. Address this over the weekend. VIRGO [Aug. 23 - Sept. 22] - You have more work this week than you can handle. Feel free to delegate. Others are more than willing to help you out. LIBRA [Sept. 22 - Oct. 22] - Your efficiency at work gains admirers. One co-worker, though, tends to take advantage of you. It’s nice to be helpful, but don’t do all the work.

you say and feed it into a little earpiece. Let’s see — maybe Chris Rock, Chris Elliott, William Shakespeare, Gore Vidal, Fran Lebowitz, and the Dalai Lama. Then again, if Shakespeare appears to be between agents, and Chris Rock’s agent is harder to get on the phone than Shakespeare’s, you could try acknowledging that nobody can be everything to anybody. In fact, two people might be more likely to stay together if each occasionally has something to bring to the relationship that the other didn’t experience firsthand 10 minutes prior. This notion does go directly against the old blob-style tradition of relationships, in which two interesting individuals merge into one increasingly uninteresting couple-mass...eating, sleeping, moving, and thinking as one. That isn’t love — it’s solidification. Instead of living in fear that he’s going to leave you, accept that he very well might — for his friend or for one of thousands of other women who believe that carrying around a pocketful of polished rocks will lead to more than a trip to the tailor. Chances are, however, that he thinks you have something they don’t (scientific skepticism, one would hope). For best results, express your concerns in a soft, sweet voice, unaccompanied by flying china. To keep your cool, keep this in mind: His departure, if any, is unlikely to kill you. Well...not unless he leaves a bunch of pebbles in his wake, and you trip and die of a brain hemorrhage before you can get to the emergency room to
