LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR REGARDING TRAVIS HENDERSON’S CHEECH FOR PRESIDENT This is the most stereotypical and grossly untrue opinion I have had the misfortune to read in a while. All Cannabis RE-legalization is gaining more momentum around the world, and slowly across our country because a) It is the most valuable and versatile RENEWABLE RESOURCE on our planet, and b) It poses NO danger to individuals or society, and no one in world history has ever died from it. How much MORE "like" prohibition could this be? This IS a government of enforced prohibition designed to eliminate competition in the fuel, paper, plastic, paint, and pharmaceutical industries. Cannabis is the MAIN competition, and can provide better, safer, stronger, environmentally conscious products in ALL of these monopolized industries. As for your stereotyping pro-legalization supporters to all be like "Spiccoli", you are WAY out of touch with this issue. Sure, people make jokes regarding RE-legalization because this is such a ridiculous prohibition, and many of us are waiting for the day that we can relax with this natural herb and NOT be considered a criminal. Cannabis produces more biomass for fuel and paper, per acre, than any other crop. Growing Cannabis for ENERGY would create an agriculturally based economy. This would give farmers and the working classes of our society the ability to control our energy and finally share in the wealth of our nation. Using Cannabis for our paper products would save thousands of acres of trees, helping preserve the Earth’s ecosystems. Using biomass for fuel will help restore the Earth’s normal CO2 cycle to a more natural balance, reversing the Greenhouse Effect and stopping acid rain. Re-legalizing Marijuana is NOT just about "getting high". Re-legalization will help many sick people from suffering and dying, and it will stop innocent lives from being destroyed in prisons. When Marijuana is legal, They will not be able to stop full scale commercial Hemp production, which will ultimately stop this biocidal human destruction and save our planet. In the future I hope you will not keep giving opinions that encourage and spread your ignorance. Please LEARN the TRUTH about ALL Cannabis & Re-legalization movements before you stereotype activists who are trying to end needless suffering and save our planet. In my opinion, any substance that can induce peace and happiness, reduce violence, and save our environment is just what we NEED right now. Michele Bafan, Kahului

Incumbents Rule in Primary Yagi-Buen Exception; Pays Price for Anti-Union Votes Incumbents handily won most of their elections in Maui County, including Wayne Nishiki, the Maui County Council member who was recently arrested for driving under the influence. The exception was in the race for state Senate District 4, where incumbent Jan Yagi-Buen was neatly defeated by Shan Tsutsui 4,255 - 2,921. Yagi-Buen had incurred the wrath of public employee unions for several of her votes, including votes to privatize some state services. Since there is no Republican challenger, Tsutsui, 31, will represent the central Maui district in the state Senate. But current Maui County Council members Nishiki (South Maui), Dain Kane (Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu) and Danny Mateo (Molokai) each got the most votes for their council positions, as did Maui Mayor James "Kimo" Apana in his race for a second term. The top two candidates in each race move on to the general election. Nishiki and Kane each received more than 50 percent of the vote and Mateo, who was appointed to fill out the seat vacated by the death of Pat Kawano, received 25.5 percent, just 144 votes more than Beverly Pauole-Moore, who he will face in the general election. Pauole-Moore beat Stacy Helm Crivello by 161 votes. Mayor James "Kimo" Apana received 44.3 percent of the vote over challengers Alan Arakawa (36.4 percent) and Rob Parsons (13.7 percent). Apana and Arakawa will advance to the general election.
There will be at least one new face on the county council in 2003, as Arakawa did not seek reelection to the Kahului residency seat so he could run for mayor. D. Mele Carroll and Joseph Pontanilla each received a little over 7,000 votes, and will move on to the general election, edging candidates Herman Andaya and Nick Casumpang, Jr. Turnout for the primary election was low, with only a little over 35 percent of registered Maui County voters casting ballots. Out of 77,946 total voters registered, 27,985 voted Saturday. Statewide, the turnout was 41.1 percent, or 274,460 of 667,669 registered voters. Maui County had the lowest turnout and Kauai County, with 51.2 percent of eligible voters casting ballots, had the best turnout. There wasn't much suspense in the Republican gubernatorial primary, with former Maui Mayor Linda Lingle capturing over 90 percent of the vote statewide and also in Maui County. She defeated John Carroll and Crystal Young. However, the Democratic primary was another matter. Lt. Governor Mazie Hirono pulled off a narrow win over state representative Ed Case to be the Democratic Party's nominee for governor. She won by only 2,603 votes statewide, capturing 41 percent (76,685) to Case's 40 percent (74,082). D.G. Andy Anderson finished a distant third with 33,378 votes statewide. Hirono did better in Maui County, where she won by 2,613 votes. Her 7,828 votes represented 42.3 percent of the vote here, compared to 5,215 or 28.2 percent for Case. Anderson pulled 4,827 votes or 26.1 percent.

DON GRONNING
While the Democrats and Republicans got the most attention, there are other parties fielding candidates for governor. Libertarians chose Tracy Ahn Ryan over George Peabody. Maui resident, Kau'i Hill a.k.a. Bu La'ia will represent the Natural Law party, Daniel Cunningham will be the Free Energy candidate, and Jim Brewer will be the non-partisan candidate in the general election. In the race to be the Republican candidate for the state Senate's District 5, Don Couch beat Dr. Ben Azman 1,470 to 1,314. He will face Democrat Roz Baker in the general election. Brian Blundell defeated Patty Nagasako-Peterson 848 to 463 to win the Republican slot for the state House District 10 seat. He will face Democrat Jim Rouse in the general. Sol Kaho'ohalahala trounced Frances Segundo 2,041 to 902 for the
Democratic candidacy for the state House 13th District seat. He will take on Republican Ron Davis in the general. Democrat Patsy Mink won the right to seek another term to the U.S. House of Representatives, District 2 seat, although questions about her health have gone unanswered. She is currently hospitalized in intensive care following complications from chicken pox. Mink beat Steve Tataii, while Republican Bob McDermott beat James "The Ump" Donovon for that party's nomination. Matt Matsunaga won the Democratic nomination and James "Duke" Aiona won the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor. They will be on the ballot with Tom Stone (Natural Law), Ken Vaughan (Libertarian), Arthur Powell (Free Energy) and Renee Ing (Nonpartisan).

THE LEE ALTENBERG
P R OJ E C T
Imagine you are a mere California tarweed seed, hoisted into the air and blown by a restless wind 3,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean. By some lucky chance, you fall onto the new soil of the Hawaiian Islands. You have found plant heaven— little competition and few predators. You settle into your new home, shed now-useless barbs, thorns, and propellers, and over tens of thousands of years, you
creep up mountains and into valleys, evolving into thirty species filling every niche you stumble upon. From a lowly tarweed with wanderlust, you have grown into the mighty Silversword Alliance. This story describes many of the plant and animal species found in Hawai’i before the arrival of humans. For 70 million years, these islands evolved in isolation. On the average, a
single species every 35,000 years survived the journey and successfully established itself here. They came in the muddy feet of seabirds, marooned atop ocean debris, and in strong gusts of wind which span oceans. After arriving they began to evolve. Adapting to their new home—an island chain boasting of ecological zones from rainforest to alpine desert-the first Hawaiian resi-
dents developed new, fascinating characteristics distinguishing them from their ancestors. A rather drab-looking finch evolved into forty species of spectacular honeycreepers. The radically curved bill of the I’iwi perfectly fits into the blossom of another pioneer, the lobelia. This phenomenon, an example of adaptive radiation, makes Hawai’i an unparalleled showcase for evolutionary study.
Replanting Ancient Hawai'i A bit of old Hawai’i is sprouting up in a South Maui gulch. Hidden in a Kihei suburb, rare native plants are staging a comeback thanks to the efforts of UH Manoa Computer Science Professor, Lee Altenberg. After the hot sun subsides, around five p.m., Altenberg can be seen knee-deep in koa haoles and buffel grass, yanking them by the root while coaxing his transplanted natives to grow in their stead. "I call it 'Lee's Gym',” Altenberg jokes, "Twenty five dollars buys you a pick and a lifetime membership. I get at least an hour's workout each day." More than muscles, Altenberg is building a legacy--a stand of native dry land forest largely extinct in

COVER STORY
Hawaii. The gorgeous, orange-blossomed ‘ohai sending branches across Altenberg’s gulch represents a rare treasure. When biologists discovered ‘ohai, an endemic member of the pea family in 1992, only thirteen plants remained in the wild. Eaten up by cattle and crowded out by alien species, South Maui plants such as ‘ohai disappeared almost entirely. Very few people living in Hawai’i have an idea of what a native dry land forest looks like. Lee Altenberg and his peers are changing that. Lee’s vision is an eventual canopy of native trees that will span the length of Li’iliholo gulch—from Kamaole point to Pi’ilani high-
By: Shannon Wianecki way. While it is privately owned, the gulch can never be developed because it is in a flood path. So for Altenberg to begin realizing his dream, all he needed to do was convince the neighbors to let him replace their backyard weeds with natives and start planting! His efforts thus far have been successful. After just one year his plants are thriving. Alongside the ‘ohai grows mature wili-wili trees, nai’o and ma’o bushes, nehe flowers, and ‘anunu vines. Most of these plants have
Hawaiian cultural significance. The fragrant shrub nai’o (also called false sandalwood) was infamously used by the Hawaiians as a substitute in the Chinese sandalwood trade. Its honey sweet aroma fills Li’iliholo gulch and attracts pollinators. Ma’o, a native cotton plant, was employed in dye-making. More recently mainland cotton farmers used ma’o to rescue their crops with Hawaiian genes. Crossbreeding the cottons produced a pestresistant strain.
Altenberg uses Ma'o in another way. "It's my ‘tank’," he says. "Super drought-hardy". To reclaim the gulch, Altenberg must rid it of the alien buffel grass, and then provide shade cover for native seeds. On the front lines of reforestation, Ma'o does the trick. Beneath its protective cover, small aeia and halapepe trees can be seen struggling upwards. To a student of native biology this is a miracle; these plants, specially adapted over thousands of years to inhabit this place, have not grown here in a century. Still, some people cannot fathom why a college professor would want to spend his free time doing backbreaking work in other peoples’ yards. Some of his plants look more like weeds than the weeds themselves. Are they worth the effort? Why? "They may look like weeds—but always with some extraordinary twist," Altenberg counters. "An unearthly quality that hints that these are no ordinary plants. The dry land forest plants native to Kihei tend to be shrubby, woody, and eccentric—twisting, climbing, arching into shapes completely different from the standard ‘tropical’ landscaping used everywhere. Shapes that evoke not the image from a real estate magazine, but the memory of a lost world." And scientists internationally agree with him. Not only are these plants eccentric, they are endemic to Hawai’i (meaning they originated and exist naturally only here). Some are endemic to the island of Maui, and even to a specific valley or gulch. For this reason, Altenberg recruits seeds from the native plants nearest to his gulch. This intense, local "uniqueness" makes them precious to the study of how species develop and survive. Biologists in Hawai’i daily discover unrecorded species and startling new patterns of life. Altenberg’s professional career also depends on this study, in a somewhat unexpected way. At UH, he specializes in evolutionary computation—applying theories of natural organisms to computer programming. He teaches computers to crossbreed designs and, according to Darwinian principles of selection, how to choose the fittest. The same dynamics governing the plants in his gulch are applicable in the computer lab. And who can say where else these theories may be found significant? While he waters the plants and hacks back the weeds he insists his project is not a garden, it is a forest. He points to a wili-wili "volunteer", a native tree that has sprouted independently and now stands more than ten feet tall. A native sedge creeps ambitiously up a storm drain, out-competing an alien grass. Overall, Altenberg's plants have had a high (90%) survival rate. One day his vision of self-propagating native forest plants may just come true. And why not? They spent tens of thousands of years adapting specifically to this place; they belong here.

FORCEFED A FORCE FED APPETIZER Normally, I write about social or political issues in this column. But there is something that is a lot more important than Iraq or Afghanistan right now (not really but let’s just pretend for awhile) because football season is under way and I’ve got to tell you, I love this time of year. I may not be the biggest football fanatic around. I mean, I can’t recite stats for every football player on demand, but I do love watching games all day Saturday and Sunday and then, of course, Monday. But you know what else is good about football? College replays on Monday and Tuesday mornings on ESPN. And don’t forget John Madden on Monday Night Football. There should be a rule that at least one of the commentators in the booth at all times should be an ex-player or coach who is a total meathead and Madden fits that role perfectly. Phil Simms is another good one and Terry Bradshaw is such a meathead he redefines the term. As far as Monday Night Football goes, Dan Dierdorf was a great meathead. He once talked about how bad a kicker was playing and Al Michaels told him to watch what he said. Dierdorf’s classic response was "What’s he gonna do, beat me up? Then Dennis Miller and Dan Fouts were brought in to make things a little more cerebral but it turns out things got a little too cerebral because any comedian that needs a website to explain his jokes is more confusing than funny. And Dan Fouts was just, well, Dan Fouts. Steve Spurrier going 1-2. I really didn’t like Spurrier in college even though he’s a great coach. It’s just that smug attitude. Or maybe it’s the way he looks like he’s going to cry when he throws his visor on the ground. But then again, it could also be the way he used to jerk quarterbacks in and out of games just because he wanted to keep them on their toes. "Play good at all times or you’re going to get yanked" was his motto. I just can’t wait to see him try and do that now that he’s in the NFL and dealing with million dollar egos whose contracts rely on playing time. Regardless of past dislikes, Spurrier’s already shown that he’s capable of fielding a good team right off the bat, even if they are 1-2. The Rams are 0-3 and the Chargers are 3-0. That right there should show you that there is something seriously amiss in the football world. But then again, the Chargers are my team so I am fully aware that
OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON
they could go in the tank for the rest of the season and finish 3-13 and the Rams could finish 3-13. But let’s hope that neither one of those things happen. The UH back-up quarterback blessing. It happened last year when Nick Rolovich came in for an injured Timmy Chang and proceeded to kick some serious tail on everyone he played, playing well enough to earn a spot with the Denver Broncos. Next comes Jason Whieldon, who took over for a still injured Chang at the beginning of the season and began throwing touchdowns immediately. When Whieldon left the team for personal reasons (he’s now back with the team), Shawn Withy-Allen became the newest back-up to flourish. Withy-Allen, whose name conveys images of a UH professor of poetry rather than a UH quarterback, threw for two TD’s and ran for another in last Saturday’s 31-6 pummeling of UTEP, proving once again that the best bet for UH is the back-up.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT I have a little something I want to throw out there to be discussed in more detail at a later date. It involves drug use and our increasing numbness to its effects. No, not the actual physical numbness that comes from a three day bender, but the collective numbness that comes from the complete saturation of our society by drugs. There once was a time when drug use was unheard of, but most of us are not old enough to remember it. Then drug use became something that was whispered about, but still totally taboo. Then it became acknowledged and from there it became openly talked about. After that, drug use moved to being openly considered by one’s peers although it was still frowned upon. Now even the frowning is beginning to decrease and drug use is becoming seen as a necessary evil of our society. Basically, drug use is becoming accepted. Although President Bush in no way is responsible for the rampant drug problems facing this country, with his presidency we have the first president who has acknowledged using drugs. Ecstasy-dealing rings have been reported in all branches of the military, a scary fact for obvious reasons. Essentially, the widespread acceptance of drug use is beginning to permeate previously unheard of areas of our society; areas such as the White House and the military, two places drug use really shouldn’t be. It’s no coincidence that the subject of legalization is beginning to gain more support but the question for the day is: Are we going to legalize drugs simply because everyone is doing it? And if so, are we going to regret it in the end?
NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES September reports in the New York Post and the Toronto Star, quoting parents' Web site "reviews" of the Mattel $19.99 Nimbus 2000 plastic-replica broomstick from the latest Harry Potter movie, highlighted its battery-powered special effect: vibration. Wrote a Texas mother: "I was surprised at how long (my daughter and her friends) can just sit in her room and play with this magic broomstick." Another said her daughter fights her son for it but complains that "the batteries drain too fast." A New Jersey mother, sensing a problem, said her daughter could keep playing with it, "but with the batteries removed." Still another mother, age 32, said she enjoyed it as much as her daughter. In Perth, Scotland, in September, Edwin Young was ordered to pay Yvonne Rennie the equivalent of $10,000 for a 1998 accident that was caused when Young had an epileptic seizure while driving and lost control of his car. In an unpolitically correct twist, almost $6,000 worth of the compensation was to pay Rennie for the post-trauma stress, including having to endure watching Young while the seizure continued.
DEMOCRACY IN ACTION In the June debate between Republican candidates for Alabama secretary of state, Dave Thomas heatedly challenged Dean Young to a fistfight. And immediately after a June Democratic Party meeting in Atlantic City, N.J., the head of a challenging faction and the head of the eventually victorious incumbent faction pulled knives on each other. And East Palo Alto, Calif., school board candidate Leland Francois said he would remain on the November ballot despite disclosure that his only legal residence in the district was a vacant lot that housed his van, sleeping bag and portable stove. And disbarred lawyer Mike Schaefer announced he was running simultaneously (and legally) for a county office in Las Vegas, Nev., and the GOP nomination for an Arizona congressional seat.
THE F STATE (FLORIDA) Among the 11 proposed constitutional amendments on the November ballot in Florida is one to make pregnant pigs more comfortable by forbidding farmers to house them in "inhumane" 2-foot-by-7-foot cages, even though, reportedly, only two farmers in the state still use the cages, and they say the cages prevent injury to the pigs. If it passes, it will likely be the only animal right enshrined in a U.S. constitution. In August, the state attorney in Palm Beach, Fla., began investigating psychic

Veronica Lynn Boys admitted that she had paid Marks $1.1 million over a seven-year-period, including $150,000 cash on the spot at their first session, when Marks warned Boys of bad luck as a small snake emerged from an egg Marks had placed on a table. Also, an 88-year-old woman said she signed over her condo to Marks, and paid $22,000 for furniture and improvements to it, under similar circumstances. Don Bates, 55, running for the school board in Inverness, Fla., as one of the self-proclaimed "God guys" who would beef up religion at board meetings, resigned in August when it came to light that he had been arrested in 1994 for masturbating (while naked from the waist down) in a parking lot in nearby Crystal River. The day before the story broke, he had asked supporters for unusually large campaign contributions, citing "the scriptures." In Gainesville, Fla., in August, accused drug dealer Marcus Isom, 26, was convicted of ordering the murder of Lemuel Larkin, who he believed stole from him. According to testimony, Isom had consulted both Georgia spiritual adviser "The Root Man" and "Miss Cleo's" psychic hotline to find out who scammed him, and both gave descriptions that led Isom to finger Larkin. Investigators believe a man named Truth Miller was the hit man, killing Larkin as he emerged from Boobie's Bar in Archer, Fla.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS A 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were found dead and nude in a car in his family's garage, in a love clench, with the garage door closed and the car's engine running (for the air-conditioner) (Corona, N.Y., June). And a 21-year-old woman, hiding in a closet to surprise her boyfriend, made a noise that provoked him to fearfully grab his pistol, and when she flung open the door, he fired, killing her (Council Bluffs, Iowa, June). And when a 43-year-old man insisted on driving home despite being drunk, his best friend shot out the air in the man's tires, so angering the drunk man that a fight ensued, during which the drunk man was accidentally shot to death (Bastrop, Texas, August).
MEGALOMANIACS ON PARADE Turkmenistan's president Saparmurat Niyazov made two decrees five days apart in August, first changing the names of the seven days of the week and the 12 months of the year, e.g., April became "Gurbansoltanedzhe" (the name of Niyazov's mother), and Tuesday became "Young Day." In the second decree, 12-year life cycles were created, beginning with "childhood," "adolescence" (up to age 25), on up to "wise" (age 73 to 85) and "old" (to 97).

The Maui Marathon The Ultimate 26 Miles "If your idea of a great marathon includes incredible scenery, a well-run race organization, small race charm and an unsurpassed vacation destination, then the Maui marathon may be just your race!" according to The Ultimate Guide to Marathons by Marathon Publisher’s Inc. This past weekend was very eventful as Maui was the host to several marathons of varying distances. On Saturday, September 21st, the 6th Annual Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk and the 1st Annual Front Street Mile were held on the west side. With 600 participants representing 17 countries, the 6th annual Maui Tacos 5K began and ended at Whaler’s Village in Kaanapali. There were 7 participants in the 1st annual Front street mile in Lahaina. On Sunday, September 22nd, the 31st Annual Maui Marathon began at Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului and 26.2 exhausting miles later, ended at Whaler’s Village in Kaanapali. Along the way, there were 20 aid stations, each with a theme of their own. The volunteers enthusiastically
refreshed the participants or picked up the trash, some dressed in hula skirts, some manned with drums, and most sporting bottled water, PowerAde, diluted coca-cola and iced sponges. With 2305 participants representing 17 countries and 44 states, this was an event that could not be missed if you happened to be anywhere between Kahului and Lahaina on Sunday.

Maui Time Weekly’s own Jeff Onderko took 112th place overall at this weekend’s marathon. After 20 exhausting miles, he resisted the urge to detour home in Lahaina and pushed on with an average of 8 and 1/2 minute miles. Although stating, “I’m not running another marathon for five years,” after the race, he’s come around following a few square meals. The Maui Marathon originally started on Oahu in the early 1940’s, however at that time it was known as the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), which makes it 1 of the 3 oldest marathons west of the Mississippi. One of Hawaii’s top runners, Norman Tamanana, brought the marathon to Maui in 1971. Maui was an ideal place to hold such an event because of how the road system was situated along the ocean with breathtaking views. It was very successful, and it officially became known as The Maui Marathon in 1974 and remains a success to this day. This marathon is the longest consecutively held event statewide and is very well organized to raise funds for Maui charities. Worldwide marathon runners gather on Maui every year to compete and have raised over $155,000 since 1995 for the local charities. Runner’s World Magazine ranks the Maui Marathon in the top 10 most scenic marathon
destinations in the world (Feb. ’96) and the Ultimate Guide To Marathons ranked it the number 10 best destination in North America! The results of the 6th Annual Maui Tacos 5K are as follows: Men’s: 1st Ryan Wilson of Santa Monica, CA :15:34, 2nd Roger Busch of Puunene, :16:25, 3rd Aaron Pierson of Oakland, CA, :16:56, Women: 1st Kira Jorgensen of Seabrook, TX, :18:41, 2nd Cheryl Brady Sheremeta of La Jolla, CA,:19:05, 3rd Shelia McLaughlin of Haiku, :21:35. The results of the 1st Annul Front Street Mile are as follows: 1st Michael Stember :04:04, 2nd Rob Mitchell :04:04, 3rd Ben Andres :04:05, 4th Christian Hesche :04:06, 5th Jeremy Huffman :04:07, 6th Jason Pyrah :04:18. The results of the 31st Annual Maui Marathon are as follows: Men’s: 1st Kalid Abdallah of Oakland, CA, 2:19:50, 2nd Greg Wenneborg of Tucson, AZ, (who won last two years) 2:27:55, 3rd James Sheremeta of La Jolla, CA, 2:33:11 Women’s: 1st Akiko Sekiya of Japan, 2:57:39, 2nd Akiko Kobayashi of Japan, 3:05:52, 3rd Stephanie Wenneborg of Tucson, AZ, #3:13:14 Wheel Chair Division: 1st Randy "the Animal" Caddell of Kailua-Kona, 1:50:43, 2nd Ron Amundson of Hilo, 2:01:33, 3rd Neal Snarr of Wailuku, 3:50:20 * No women wheel chair participants.

"Follow your dreams, they’ll take you where you want to be" is some good advice from Paige Alms of Haiku, the winner of the open women division of the NSSA Hawaii event number 2, which was held in Lahaina on September 7-8 earlier this month. For the last 3 years she has been dominating the amateur surfing world. This King Kekaulike High School freshman is a very successful surfer at the young age of 14, as well as a student, maintaining excellent grades. She knows what she wants and knows how to get it - look out, world! If only such determination, skills and motivation could be bottled! Paige Alms was born in Victoria, Canada where she spent the first half of her life. Before moving to Maui she spent a year in Australia, where she had her first surfing lesson. For the last five years, Paige and her mother, Harriet Alms, have lived in Haiku. Ho’okipa is a second home to Paige. "I go to Ho’okipa everyday because it breaks year round, unless it’s good somewhere else," says Paige. Her favorite spots are Ho’okipa and Honolua Bay, which is perfect for the young regular foot athlete. She has immense reserves of energy driven by the love of the ocean that is evident in her accomplishments in a relatively short time frame. She has been winning several contests, placing 1st in the short board and long board divisions for the last 3 years. Paige is extremely talented while preserving a certain sense of humbleness. Saeng’s Thai Cuisine Wailuku’s Garden Hideaway
SOMETHING NEW AT GABY’S EVERY NIGHT! from 900-11:00pm
LATE NIGHT HAPPY HOUR
Old Wailuku town has a special kind of feel. As I meander up Vineyard Ave., I feel the West Maui Mountains looming over me, secretive Iao Valley centered directly in my view. I pass an old bowling alley, the quiet, dusty front of a tuxedo shop, and an old style candy-stripe barber shop complete with a scowling youngster dodging the deft strokes of his aging assailant. The barber winks and smiles as I pass by and duck into the cool, welcome relief of Saeng Thai’s garden courtyard. The plant enshrouded fish pond and rich wood paneling adorned with Thai artifacts set the perfect mood for my midday dining excursion. I settle into a
juice. You can have it mild if you like, but I like lots of chile to clear my palate and my senses. Keep an eye on your dish, though; it seems to be a favorite with some of the other garden denizens, who may fly in but won’t fly out. What can you do? It’s the price we pay for paradise. I can’t help but keep an eye on my main course as it arrives: Evil Prince with Chicken and Beef Eggplant. The Evil Prince is distinctive in name and flavor. Tender slices of chicken breast are simmered in coconut milk, spices, and lots of fresh basil then draped over a bed of chopped cabbage. Spoon this onto Saeng Thai’s signature Sticky Rice served in a woven basket and you will soon be caught in its spell. Although the Evil Prince is difficult to
refreshing Thai Iced Tea and glance over the menu. My favorites are all there and I quickly decide what I want, but the lone server working the floor, the bar, and the register looks a little too busy to get to me. Maybe someone called in sick? Well, I’m in no hurry today and my service is friendly and efficient when it does arrive. The Crispy Spring Rolls with bean thread noodles, pork, and vegetables are a must have, although I miss the extras like fresh mint and crushed peanuts. I get my fix, though, with the arrival of the Steamed Broccoli and Shrimp Satay. Succulent shrimp and rich peanut sauce are perfectly complemented by the vibrant, wholesome texture of fresh broccoli. Coconut Soup with Chicken is my second course. This coconut milk based soup is surprisingly light and fragrant with Thai mountain ginger, lemongrass, and lemon
escape, the Beef Eggplant has a magic of its own. Delicate slivers of sirloin are embraced by creamy slices of eggplant in a mysteriously rich and flavorful brown sauce. I believe that beef and eggplant are made for each other and this dish definitely proves it. Saeng’s Thai Cuisine offers a host of other entrees including Green Papaya Salad, Asparagus Soup, Dancing Prawns, Pad Ped Seafood, Honey Lemon Shrimp and Lobster Curry with a large vegetarian section as well. The average cost per dish is nine to ten dollars and they are open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Dinner is served nightly from 5:00 to 9:30 P.M As I leave my garden sanctuary and step onto the street, I see that the West Maui’s and Wailuku have not gone anywhere, but I certainly have. Step into Saeng’s Thai Cuisine today and discover for yourself this cool, refreshing hideaway.

Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo Taste the Exquisite Flavor of a Living Japanese Treasure When considering the dramatic arts of Japan, Kabuki, Noh, and Bunraku may quickly come to mind, while the art of Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo remains shrouded in intrigue. This puppetry style was developed in Hachioji, a community on the outskirts of Tokyo, in the 1800’s. Standing far from the western idea of marionette
puppeteers, these dolls (ningyo) are, amazingly enough, manipulated by an individual who sits behind them dressed in black, while the story is told through the musical accompaniment called shinnai. Maui has the sole fortune to catch a glimpse of an amazing and ancient Japanese dramatic art performing on Thursday, October 3, at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center by
Japan’s 5th generation Kuruma Ningyo Master, Koryu Nishikawa and his troupe, accompanied by Shinnai Master Wakasanojo, the 11th Iemoto of the Tsuruga School of Shinnai and a National Living Treasure of Japan. Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo uses puppets one meter tall (3.2 feet), specially carved and complete with eyebrows and eyes that move as well

as hands and feet. These ningyo can be convincingly expressive as they are brought to life by the arms, legs, feet and hands of the puppeteer sitting on a small seat with wheels beneath known as the "cart" (kuruma). This distinguishes Kuruma Ningyo from other forms of Japanese puppetry, like Bunraku, that can take as many as three people to operate each puppet. This one-on-one relationship allows for greater realism and flexibility between the puppet master and its muse. The Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo troupe is recognized as an "Intangible Folk Custom Cultural Asset" by the Japanese government, and has spent much of its past 15 years touring internationally. Shinnai is part of a large family of Japanese musical traditions and it combines vocals with the shamisen, a three stringed lute remotely resembling a banjo. Shinnai is known as katari style or narrative style, and is the art of storytelling, a narrative set to music. Shinnai, developed during the Edo period in Japan, is refined in this century by Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI, who has molded his musical storytelling art to harmonize with the puppetry. Shinnai was not traditionally an accompaniment for puppets or dancing. Wakasanojo was designated by the Japanese government as a Living National Treasure for his lifelong work in adapting shinnai songs to suit the dramatic arts and thereby increasing its prominence throughout Japan. "I hope that as many people in America will come to our performances as possible in order to listen to the special sound of shinnai and see the traditional puppets perform," says Wakasanojo. "If you don’t try some food, then you won’t know how it tastes. In the same way, if you don’t listen to shinnai, you won’t understand its value." For a mere $22, you can sample an exquisite taste of this ancient Japanese delicacy.

BY COLE SMITHEY
Lucy Liu Blows Stuff Up: Audience Falls Asleep Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever — (No Stars) You know you're in trouble when you discover that the ridiculously titled action movie "Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever" runs a skimpy 95 minutes long and was directed by a Thai music video director who goes by the name "Kaos" (short for Kaosayananda - directed "Fah"). But the unexpected effect of sitting through this meandering morass of endless explosions, gun battles and car chases is the long series of literal yawns the movie inspires; it puts you to sleep. Sleep analysts could have a field day studying how so much onscreen fire and fury can induce slumber in audience members. I'm sure it has something to do with the film's limping plotline that passes for a story about the kidnapped son of an evil creator of a microscopic robot-assassin, or the vacant way Sever (Lucy Liu) disposes of her enemy. "Steaming pile of celluloid dung" is the best way I can describe this waste of enough money to feed a small country. It's especially dismal that the same movie designed to make Lucy Liu the next big action film star is also the movie that further denigrates Antonio Banderas' ever slipping status as a leading man. Behind such turkeys as "The 13th Warrior," and "Original Sin," Banderas has been relegated to the successful "Spy Kids" movies, but he would do well to reintroduce himself to Pedro Almodovar, the Spanish director who launched Banderas' career with such films as "Matador" and "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" Banderas has never properly addressed cleaning up his thick accent, and for all of his onscreen glamour, it's a sticking point that interferes with every American film he's done, with the possible

Ballistic: Ecks Vs.Sever — (No Stars) exception of "Desperado." Antonio Banderas is nevertheless the only redeeming feature in "Ballistic" because he brings the intelligent discretion of an outsider into a role that's written as a fairly flat comic book hero. As former FBI man-hunter Jeremiah Ecks, Banderas is constantly put upon to elevate moronic dialogue like, "It's my job; it's what I do," when defending himself to
his thought-to-be-deceased wife Rayne (Talisa Soto - "Pinero"). Ecks is called upon to bring down Sever, a rebel Defense Intelligence Agency agent who has kidnapped the young son of DIA boss Robert Gant to protect the boy from the microscopic robot he's been used to smuggle into the country by his own father. But this isn't a movie about anything other than exploding trains, flying cars and falling bodies. One scene that doubtlessly has the filmmakers patting themselves on the back shows a man falling face-up from 100 stories onto the roof of a car that collapses under his weight. There's a reverse focus much like Alfred Hitchcock used in Vertigo that momentarily gets your attention before the movie digresses back into its non-stop barrage of metal scraping asphalt with sparks flying. Techno music becomes a sedative in "Ballistic" because full three-minute versions of hypnotically repetitive songs are used to ironically comment on the gasoline and powder explosions that punctuate the movie like so many unimaginative fireworks. The effect is that of watching someone else playing a video game. The filmmakers are careful to make
nearly all of the casualties in the movie faceless uniformed agents who drop like tin soldiers so that our heroes can have their final showdown. But the finale arrives without surprise and with considerably less impact than is predicted by all of the scenes of flipping busses and cars flying in tandem over Banderas' head just after he's jumped his motorcycle over a stack of cars without a visible ramp. Cinema will always have a place for movies of nude women smearing mustard on hotdogs while a loaded gun sits on a table. The beauty of that imagery is the myriad of questions that the scene brings up in the audience's imagination. Why is she eating a hotdog in the buff? Where did the gun come from? Is that spicy mustard? Will someone else come into the scene and interrupt her? But movies like "Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever" don't allow room for narrative questions like these to steep because they're designed from the logic of a video game spliced with a music video. Here violence is confused with spectacle and artillery is mutated with character. The result is an asexual, detached, non-political pummeling of fire and metal. Even Ayn Rand would start to snore.

THEADVICEGODDESS IT ISN'T EASY BEING QUEEN I've had a crush on my friend's brother since we were both 17. Now, 10 years and several hookups later, he and I joke about getting married. I think we'd be great together. The problem is his sister (my friend), who's a year older than we are and adamant about us not being together. She was never crazy about the idea, but since she had kids, she's more against it than ever. She refuses to give any reason except "friends and family shouldn't mix." One night, she even made her brother swear on her son, his godson, that he wouldn't hang out with me! He's really close with his family (the rest of whom think we'd be great together), and I worry that our relationship won't go any further because of his sister. What's up with her? What should I do? --Friend Or Beau? Paper or plastic? Aisle or window? Where does Her Majesty stand on the rest of your daily dilemmas? It's time you took full advantage of The Queen's decision-making powers. Sure, whether to eat Fruity or Cocoa Pebbles might seem a minor quandary compared to who can and cannot marry into (or share a beer with) The Royal Family. But really, is there any limit to the extent to which you, as a commoner, can benefit from her divine intervention? Perhaps Parliament can install a hot-
BY AMY ALKON
line so you can ring her with life's least pressing issues, whenever they arise: "Sorry, Highness, I know it's late, but the waiter needs to know, do I want fresh-ground pepper on my steak?" Well, since she hasn't asked her brother, the Prince, to swear off all womankind -- just you -- I'd venture that the subjects she's most interested in are her, her, her, and her children. Maybe she's afraid that an alliance of you and her brother will be so simply reeking with fabulousness that she'll be toppled from her royal rank within the family. Or maybe she sees it as the first day in a lifetime of "bad heir days" - as in, her heirs will always look bad when they stand next to the little darlings she thinks you and her bro would turn out. Finally, there's the concern that you and The Prince might get it on, then break it off, causing some touchiness in family and friendly affairs. Oh, yeah? Well, boo hoo. Life is complicated. It's hard enough to find a good man these days without imperialistic relatives narrowing the playing field from one to none. Who crowned her Queen? Well, you did, and he did...if you obey her royal wee-wee. It's high time you and he informed Her High And Mightiness – by disobeying her orders, preferably over glasses of wine, just for starters – that the only throne she's ever going to occupy is the one that's kitty-corner from the bathtub.
