LettersTothe Editor LIMITED TUITION ASSITANCE I was very excited to find out that the Workforce Development gives tuition assistance to those interested in taking Vitec/ Pace classes through MCC. However, I was very disappointed to find out that this assistance did not extend to the filmmaking courses offered this fall. As I understand it, development means to create new ideas and support them, so they can survive. These film courses are a step in the right direction, and thank you to MCC’s non-credit program for allowing them into their curriculum. But they are expensive. Not all of us can afford to drop a few thousand dollars. At least partial tuition assistance would suffice. It’s sad to keep losing talented artists, who help represent the diverse spirit of Hawaii, because they cannot receive the training that they need. The arts should be for everyone! Not just those who can afford the hefty tuition fees! Viv, via email
The Failure of Travis Henderson (In response to Travis Henderson’s political brief on September 5 2002: ‘The Failure of Al-Qaeda’) All violence is absurd, your article being a perfect example of violent thinking (the first step toward war). Many people search for opportunities to act out their own dysfunction and that of the collective society; the hijackers gave people the opportunity to really feel these shadowy emotions. Your adrenalin pumped, action hero article could be a template for more fear and hatred, and it was saturated with these shadows. Let me give you a few examples of “absurd violence”, Travis: The wholesale massacre of millions of red people (Columbus called them “Indians”) that lived on American soil long before Europeans got there; the capture and enslavement of millions of Africans forced into labor via hideous violence in order to build this “lone world power” you refer to, free of charge; the burning and torture of millions of women to help implement the rule of church and male-dominated medical industry over feminine power; child labor; animal torture; political imprisonment; men thrown in jail for marijuana use, thus subjecting them to possible rape and beatings by real criminals. Need I continue with more examples? Get a grip, Travis; the U.S. government KNEW we were scheduled for attack long before it occurred. George Bush Jr., an illegally placed president, has not told the truth about much of anything, like most presidents before him. Regarding your comment about the Al-Qaeda abhorring our “sense of freedom” because we watch Britney Spears, ingest greasy dead “food” like McDonald’s, and “ALLOW OUR women to wear revealing clothes”...um... They’re not your women, Travis, remember? This is the 21st century, duh.

VOTE FOR WAYNE NISHIKI I have known Wayne Nishiki for 20 years. Yes, Wayne has flaws. Yes, Wayne has problems. But despite those problems, for the last 20 years he has been the strongest voice on the Maui Council for the environment and for preventing a complete takeover of Maui by out-of control development. In some years, he has been the only voice on the Council for the environment. He led the push to get voter initiative on November’s ballot. Based on his record, I will vote for Wayne in the November election, and any other time he runs. He cannot be bought, his heart is always in the right place, protecting the ordinary person and the land and plants and animals and ocean that we all love. Wayne is also, surprisingly, probably the most intelligent person on the Council. Time and again I have seen him bring a discussion back to the essential points, and not get sidetracked. And he has stamina. Despite Wayne’s problems, we need him on the Council. Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku
Ethics Committee Biased? This past Wednesday, the 18th of September, Maui County Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson again appeared before the Maui County Board of Ethics, regarding potential ethical violations. It is time the public demands an apology from the Maui County Corporation Council, the members of the Maui County Planning Commission and those Board of Ethics members who bent over backwards at their last meeting to apologize to the Planning Commissioners. Those Commissioners were duped into bringing trumped-up charges and erroneous ethical violations by Councilmember Johnson, but did not have the ethics themselves to also apologize to Jo Anne. Those who attended the Ethics Board meeting on August 29th, or who were fortunate to view the hearings when they aired on Akaku, can see for themselves the utter bias which permeated those hearings. Here Councilwoman Johnson was only doing her job which she was elected to do. Affordable housing, real classrooms rather than portables, expanded library space, shower and toilet facilities for our wretchedly underfunded parks, plus numerous other building, development and community projects are desperately needed on Maui yet seem to never get off of the drawing board, if they ever get drawn up in the first place. However Las Vegas/ Disneyland type activities and gated million dollar homes on ìprivateî beaches for the rich, now these are urgent projects which must be approved and go through immediately, supported by the numerous appointees on both the Ethics Board and Planning Commission who are employed directly or indirectly by the tourism and construction industries.

2002 Maui Writers Conference A High Energy Gathering of World Renowned Writers The 2002 Maui Writers Conference at the Outrigger Wailea Resort in Wailea was held August 28 through September 1. The Maui Writers Conference is a high-energy, friendly, and varied gathering of the most successful writers in the world. Some of those attending were Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina; Jack Canfield, editor of the Chicken Soup franchise of inspirational books; and Tess Uriza Holthe, author of When the Elephants Dance, an MWC success story herself, having met her agent at the Maui Writers Conference in a previous year. Writers come to a writers conference to see and share a little of the success of the stars of page and screen, and presenting writers generously allow us an inside look. On Friday, Billie Letts, author of Where The Heart Is, narrated her “overnight success” from the decades of writing in the evenings after teaching to receiving the stunning call from Oprah Winfrey about adding Letts’ book to The List. Letts was charming and funny as she recounted Oprah’s planning the Book Club announcement dinner at a local WalMart, but the audience roared when she mentioned that when Oprah arrived at the store to meet the author, Winfrey mistook Letts for a Wal-Mart employee. On Sunday, I went to hear the local screenwriting news. I attended “Close Up: Hawai‘i Storytellers and Breaking Into the Industry,” featuring Elizabeth Lindsey Buyers, award-winning Hawai‘ian film-maker and former Miss Hawaii, and Georja Skinner, head of the Maui-based Skinner Entertainment, who were joined
by Donne Dawson, Director of the Hawai‘i Film Office, and Amy Kastens, the Maui County Film Commissioner. These four women illuminated the audience concerning Hawai‘i’s film industry, including issues as diverse as the international stature of the Maui Film Festival and the controversy over The Rock starring as the warrior Kamehameha in the newest Hollywood foray into Hawai‘ian culture. The discussion and audience interaction confirm growing rumors and reports of an oncoming Hawai’ian Renaissance in the arts, literature, and film. My favorite conference moment was an utterly unexpected one. At a session entitled “Guerilla Marketing--100 Weapons for Selling Your Book,” we crowded in to discover the secret of turning ink into gold. We were surprised, though, when Michael Larsen actually asked the question, “How much money do you want to make from writing?” Answers ranged from hundreds to millions, but soon Mr. Larsen stopped us. He noted that if they expect to make money, writers have much research and work to do, in order to learn and meet the demands and expectations of their chosen genre, its agents, editors, publishers, and readers. Then, he stunned us. “How many would be willing to make no money from their writing?” Only two hands rose. He smiled, saying, “Now, these two are free. They can write anything they want to write.” Writers conferences provide such high-voltage jolts of reality, and that becomes increasingly valuable in these incredible days, in which the unimaginable becomes the commonplace. The rare possibility to renew one’s vision and dedication to the word is what makes a writers conference a success. The Maui Writers Conference delivers this opportunity and more.

20/30 Vision
Contemporary Art at Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center Long known as a haven for popular and regional art such as ceramics, plein-air painting (landscapes) and Hawaiian cultural arts, the Hui No’eau, in recent years, has made conscious strides to also encompass emerging and more contemporary work. With a mission to educate the community by presenting the whole picture of what art is in Hawaii, Hui curator, Inger Tully and the selection committee, focused on diversity for this exhibit. The show has everything from collage, mixed media, jewelry; mural sized painting, sculpture and digital photography. 20/30 Vision represents 10 emerging artists (culled out of an original 50) that Tully has been observing for sometime, noting that they were all “fresh and modern in their approach, consistent in their output, and professional in their presentation.” All are from Hawaii or have been residents here for many years. And, although, it was not a criteria for inclusion, all the artists chosen turned out to be in their 20’s and 30’s (thus the title: 20/30 Vision). The most apparent commonality between the 27 pieces in the show is the “finished” quality of each piece. In fact, many pieces could best be described as “high-design,” including Tae Kitakata’s sculptural piece “Hard Candy”, and Abigail Romanchak’s Polynesian inspired mixedmedia prints. In some cases, the craftsmanship and professional presentation seems stronger than depth of “meaning” in the work. While the show does contain some of the challenging content often associated with contemporary work, the overall the “feeling” is novelty, familiarity and a sense of nostalgia. Perhaps this is a reflection that Hawaii, providing comfortable life for many residents, is still tentatively finding its 21st century voice. The fact that this exhibition is so well received by Hui members shows that the committee is succeeding in walking that fine line between the emerging modern vision and what is currently acceptable on Maui. Mimi Bergstrom’s latest series of photo transfers is her best work yet. Bergstrom’s small-scale images are steeped in an eerie black-humor haze. Her work is much more powerful than the subject matter itself. The contradictions and tension in these “every day” images are like miniature windows, intimate reflections of our sometimes beautiful, sometimes disturbing world. Luana Coonen, the youngest artist in the show, was able to capture a surprising edge with her nature inspired jewelry/mixed media piece, “Believe In Your Heart.” It is simultaneously like a hungry Venus Flytrap, an anatomical human heart, and an unusual keepsake diary. Coonen takes the viewer out of the familiar world of jewelry and into a private world where the

soft and deadly sides of nature merge. Caleb O’Conner, currently attending college on the mainland, is a Baldwin High graduate. O’Conner’s mural-size nude “King David” is admirable in its boldness and mastery of technique. Part of a growing number of young artists who are working in the genre of grotesquely honest and oversized figurative work, O’Conner’s piece is so reminiscent of Lucian Froyd and Jenny Seville that it’s difficult to look at it without automatically thinking of his predecessors. Marc Yokum’s pin-hole cameras tend to be more interesting than the resulting photos. But the basis of the work certainly invites the viewer to “think outside the box” so to speak. Cade

Roster’s digital photo-collage of constructed scenes and random sketches is something like fragments from a claymation of a BrothersGrimm fairy-tale. Jason Teraoka’s clean and simple sculptural pieces contain a delightful element of mysterious nostalgia that keeps one looking and wondering and looking again. Equally playful and thoughtful are the two sculptures of Maui’s own, KC Smith who always manages an intimate humor in her mixed media sculptures. Overall the show is quite strong, with a broad spectrum of approaches and styles, and is a rare opportunity to see work of a contemporary nature coming from the next generation of Hawaii’s artists. Everyone, even those less familiar with the newest trends in modern art will find something likable in this show. Show runs through November 2, Gallery hours Monday-Sunday 10 am – 4pm.

ALOHA FESTIVALS Reflecting on Maui’s Yesteryears 6
By: Jen Spector The state of Hawaii holds not only the distinction of being separated from the contiguous United States of America, it also holds the distinction of a unique cultural history from America. As the summer ends, and folks in the mainland are starting to think about falling leaves and cooler temperatures, we in Hawaii are thinking about commemorating our exceptional and diverse cultural background with Aloha Festivals, the only statewide celebration in the United States, spanning over our islands during September and October. And while it is our largest statewide event, each island celebrates its individuality and community within its own Aloha Festivals gala events. Maui is no exception, where this month’s celebrations are sprouting in every corner of the island and for the next few weeks Hawaiian songs, dances, ethnic foods, arts and crafts, flowers, traditions, and pageantry will become part of us all. Aloha Festivals began 56 years ago as a vision to create a public celebration to honor Hawaii’s cosmopolitan heritage and has advanced into a celebration of our Pacific, Asian and Western cultural influences. Aloha Festivals has morphed into its own identity as a nonprofit corporation, funding the festivals through Aloha Festival ribbons, merchandise, and corporate and private donations. Organizers of the event say that the Oahu portion alone brought in $11 million to the state economy in 2000, as people world-wide flock to the islands to partake in the merriment of Aloha Festivals. But the event isn’t about what it brings to the economy, and here on Maui it is more about the community than anything else. As Uncle Boy Kanae, a former Maui Manager for Aloha Festivals and current participator puts it, “We have limited resources and managers have to be creative.” Maui’s current Aloha Festival Manager, Myrna Ah Hee, knows a lot about being creative, and has coordinated an amazing spread of Aloha Festival events for October. Myrna explains, “Maui is so spread out but the hotels and community groups work together and are helpful in volunteering to put together these wonderful festivities.” This year’s theme, “Ka ‘Uhane o ka Loea”, or The Spirit of the Master, focuses on the artisans of Hawaii and the importance of their work in preserving Hawaii’s cultural heritage. You will see this theme recurring throughout Maui’s Aloha Festivals activities, as arts and crafts are an important component to
all the ho’olauleas. Uncle Boy Kanae points out, “Aloha Festivals gives Hawaiian groups, community groups and individuals an opportunity to be exposed to tourism through their arts and crafts. More people these days are turning to tourism.” As tourism is a number one factor in our state’s economy, it seems our cultural diversity and traditions are dynamically entwined with tourism as tourists seek more ethnic and cultural experiences. Aunty Moana Yee, Oahu manager of Aloha Festivals, sheds light on the connection between Aloha Festivals and tourism stating, “Hawaii’s residents put on the Aloha Festivals and invite the visitors to enjoy it. It is about sharing our aloha – and diverse ethnicity.” Aloha Festivals is unique in its ability to present the Royal Court as a cultural treasure of Hawaii. The Royal Court symbolizes the kings, queens, and their entourage of yesteryear. Volunteer members are of Hawaiian ancestry and each island has its own court, with Maui having two Royal Courts, one in Hana, and one for the rest of the island. Aunty Moana Yee explains, “The Royal Court shows the people of today what it looked like in the past.” Giving people a chance to experience Kahiko, ancient costumes, is an important component of Aloha Festivals. Myrna Ah Hee states, “The Royal Court teaches about past protocol and gives participants and volunteers alike the opportunity to see what it was like back then. Many of the volunteers say they have a wonderful experience being a part of the court, and return year after year despite the serious time commitment of participating.” While the pageantry of the festival is just one aspect of the history Aloha Festivals commemorates, it is one that we don’t get to glimpse in reenactment very often. It offers us a rare look into the unique history of the Hawaiian monarchy; after all, as Uncle Boy states, “We are the only state that was governed by a monarchy.” In celebrating the way of life in old Hawaii, Aloha Festivals brings back the tradition of the ho’okupu, the ceremo-

nial gift-giving as a sign of honor and respect. There are two kinds of ho’okupu: one is presented to the ali’i (the king and queen) of the Royal Court, the other one is offered to a sacred place of worship, such as a heiau. Ho’okupu giving ceremonies will be observed throughout this year’s Maui Royal Court appearances. An individual representing the host organization where an event takes place will present the gift to the Royal Court and be stopped by the koa warriors whose role is to protect the king. The kalaimoku, the King’s advisor, then takes the offering to make sure it is safe and proper before showing it to the King. Other highlights of Maui’s Aloha Festival celebrations include the Falsetto Contest at the Maui Myth and Magic Theatre; the parade, workshops, games, luau and other activites encompassing the entire community in Hana; the Lahaina Banyan Tree Ho’olaulea, the Maui Ho’olaulea in Kihei, the Ku’u Home O Wailuku; and the Royal Ball at the Ritz-Carlton. At the Royal Ball, event goers will have a rare occasion to don their Victorian finery and beautiful ballroom attire to enjoy a royal feast and great dance music. Whether you plan to attend the Royal Ball, the Hana Luau, or a ho’olaulea, the Aloha Festivals is sure to be a grand time for all. Remember to treasure Hawaii’s rich past in all you do this month as you observe the Royal Court, listen to falsetto notes or purchase arts and crafts. Within this year’s theme is the idea that in the skilled hands of the master crafter, utilitarian objects become works of art. In creating a work of art, the heart and spirit of the master become part of the object. So Maui’s Aloha Festivals can embody the cultural inspiration for its community. As we celebrate the ethnic diversity, the pageantry of the monarchs and the artisans of yesteryear, and remember the traditions of old Hawaii, we embrace the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture and our own multiplicity.

ForceFed SIGN LANGUAGE I don’t want to sound pessimistic about today’s culture, but there was once a time when people held themselves accountable for their own actions. If they were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, they did not automatically look for someone to blame. If they got themselves into a situation that was a little more than they bargained for, they did not immediately lay claim to victimization and seek compensation. I am here to tell you that those days are officially over. First there were the shark warning signs posted at Olawalu Beach in an attempt to relieve the state of liability in the event of more shark attacks. Now we have a ruling by Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario that says the state is to blame for not having adequate warning signs posted around Sacred Falls State Park concerning the dangers of falling rocks. In the shark sign situation, Thomas Holmes of Los Angeles was bitten by a tiger shark at Olawalu in West Maui along a stretch of beach that has seen two attacks since 1991, one of them fatal. Upon hearing that the area was a virtual “shark pit”, his girlfriend began to wonder aloud why there were no warning signs. “It absolutely needs to be posted”, said Monica Boggs, also of Los Angeles, about warning signs concerning the dangers of the ocean. Now we have a situation where the warning signs posted at Sacred Falls State Park were insufficient. What do the signs say? How about “Valley is subject to flash floods and falling rocks. If you proceed, do so at your own risk.” Or “The upper end of the trail and the falls are bordered by rocky cliffs and are subject to FALLING ROCKS and ROCK SLIDES. Use trail at your own risk.” What exactly is insufficient about these signs is unclear. It appears to me that they provide perfectly clear warning that the trails and the falls area is highly unstable and everyone must take responsibility for themselves if they go in there. Judge Del Rosario saw it differently and now it seems that the state might have to

pay compensation to the victims and families of that horrible tragedy that occurred on Mother’s Day 1999 in which eight hikers were killed by falling boulders. The emotional distress felt by the victims of that tragedy is incomprehensible to most of us but the state itself is not a for-profit enterprise. They only way the state gets its money is through taxes paid by you and I. This means that you and I are paying these people because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and were hit by an accident entirely accidental by nature. Callous rationalization? Absolutely, but the money donated to the state through taxes ought to be spent on programs and concerns involving the people of this state. How about air conditioning for classrooms? Or better yet, free lunch programs for kids who don’t get enough to eat at home? Putting up more and more signs seems to be the only option for state officials while banning kids from the park is not out of the question. But where do we go from there? Banning kids from the oceans because they are more likely to die in a shark attack? Everywhere we go we see signs. Signs telling us to Stop, Yield, don’t go this way, don’t enter here. Signs that say, “Keep out, No Trespassing”. What’s next? Signs on-board planes that say “CAUTION – Crazy man might be on plane with bomb?” I have an idea. During whale season maybe we should put signs atop rental cars stating in big block letters for all to see, “CAUTION – Ignorant tourist on board who will systematically drive on wrong side of road because he is looking for whales.” We live in a state that depends almost entirely on tourism and it is understandable that we cater to tourists’ needs. However, it is a known fact that when people get out of their element, they tend to behave differently. They are not as observant and they get confused easier. But this does not mean we should post signs all over the state warning them of dangerous things that ten seconds of common sense will tell them for themselves. Sharks live in the ocean and rocks fall from cliffs. If you need to be told this, all the warning signs in the world won’t do you any good.

But you’re lucky that I am a nice person and did not slash your tires, key your car or steal that nice longboard in the back of your truck – even though I wanted to! Luckily (for you) I was able to break the chains in front of my car and barely turn around and squeeze by. Thanks to the nice guys that helped me! NEWSOFTHEWeIrd LEAD STORIES England’s Mentorn production company announced in September that it was finalizing a deal with Channel 4 TV in London for a series in which a terminally ill man would volunteer for what Mentorn called the “ultimate makeover” (the postmortem reconstruction of his body in “plastination,” to demonstrate how changes could have improved the quality of his life). Among the possibilities: adding ribs, making knees back-bending, adding a back-up heart, and redoing the trachea to better keep food out. The show would be staged by artist Gunter von Hagens, whose Body Worlds exhibit consists of vivid dissections and reconstructions of body parts. Police in Irvine, Calif., told the Los Angeles Times in September that, based on a recent crackdown, they were stunned at the high number of abuses of handicapped parking placards. Among those caught were a teenage girl parked at a Weezer concert three months after her grandmother died and who with a straight face said that she was her grandmother (“So you’re 80 years old?” asked officer Kyle Oldoerp) and a woman who said she thought she had inherited her late husband’s parking privileges as part of his estate.
America’s New Gun Problem Among those who accidentally shot themselves recently: Police Lt. Walter Warot (carried gun in waistband, shot in buttocks) (Woonsocket, R.I., August); a 43-year-old man (gun in waistband, shot fatally) (Ventura, Calif., September); a 43-year-old man (carjacker, carried gun in his pants) (Detroit, September); and an 18-year-old man (shot in the hand) (Artesia, N.M., September). Also, three Montanans were on the list: Undersheriff Mike Dominick (gun caught in holster) (Missoula, August); a 19-year-old gangmember suspect (gun in waistband) (Great Falls, April); and a 22-year-old man (gun in waistband, shot off right testicle) (Great Falls, May).
Leading Economic Indicators In New York City in August, businessman Herbert Black sued socialite Denise Rich (ex-wife of the Clinton-pardoned Marc Rich) for nonpayment of fees he said he earned by saving her nearly a million dollars annually as a personal financial adviser. Included alleged savings were: $125,000 in flowers (by having fewer deliveries to her apartment when she wasn’t at home); $30,000 by changing the payment plan for her yoga instructions; and $52,000 in “dog maintenance” (mostly by giving away her two oldest dogs, which were so feeble that they had to be pushed by sitters around Central

Park in an $8,000 baby carriage). Business was booming in August for unlicensed street dentists in Lahore, Pakistan, according to a New York Times reporter, who witnessed several patients’ gruesome sidewalk experiences (forced on them because one-third of Pakistanis earn less in a month than even the lowest-priced licensed-dentist procedure). Tools of the trade include ordinary pliers, wire-cutters, metal files, a container of moonshine (to rinse tools off) needle-point probes (to inflict a distracting pain elsewhere in the mouth), and a red plastic sheet (so the blood won’t stand out so much). Also plentiful in the street-dentists’ “offices”: dust and vehicle exhaust.

According to the Beijing Morning Post, the government in Chengdu, China, shut down a food-processing plant in August after discovering that workers routinely pulled the bones out of chicken feet with their teeth. Workers first boiled the feet in water, then made three slits in the foot with a knife, pried open the skin with their fingers, and removed the bones with their teeth. The fastest workers could go through a foot every five seconds. In Meriden, Conn., in August, music store owner Jeff Caillouette, 35, was charged with sexual assault for allegedly forcing a then15-year-old employee to let Caillouette spank him, supposedly as punishment for various workplace mistakes. At one point, when the kid caught Caillouette in a lie, he requested and received permission to spank the boss, which he did at first while the boss was clothed but later on his bare buttocks. During the time of the alleged assaults, Caillouette was the band director at a local high school. In August, the historic Shugborough Home (Staffordshire, England) announced a job opening for a hermit to live temporarily in a cave on the grounds (running water not available) and scare away trespassers; an administrator was said to be astonished at the large number of applications. Also in August, the Landmark Trust, which manages the remote Lundy Island off the southwest coast of England, announced a job opening for a shepherd for the island’s 600 sheep and various rare wildlife; the island receives birdwatchers but has no nighttime electricity.
People With Issues In Albuquerque, Darcy Ornelas, 31, was arrested in July after a car crash that killed her 4-year-old son. According to police, Ornelas had several drinks at a party but refused advice not to drive home. She fastened her own seatbelt but not the kid’s, and then, in her Nissan 300 ZX, she became involved in a road race to prevent a Mustang from passing her, continuing to speed up and cut in front to frustrate that driver. After the fatal crash into a utility pole, Ornelas implied (according to police) that she had been concerned about being upstaged by another sports car.

Flying High at Ho’okipa Beach 2002 Red Bull King of the Air Championship
The wind was really gusty and totally unpredictable. I had to work hard for this win.” The winds were more of an advantage in the hang time event, which took place towards the end of the final day, with gusty and prime wind conditions. In the hang time portion of the contest, Jamie Herraiz of Spain won with 7.1 long seconds suspended in the air, and he took 4th place in the free-style. Julie Prochaska-Gilbert broke her record this year with 6.4 seconds of hang time, and she reflected, “I took advantage of the double lift and got so high. Even though the wind was howling, I could hear the crowd cheering me on so I knew I had pulled off a big one! I had no idea I had broken my record.” According to “Flash” Austin, “Kiting has been a real Godsend for me.” As he explains, “ I’ve been living, breathing and sleeping kiting for the last seven years.” In this year alone, he has traveled to and competed in such faraway places that some only dream of, like Spain, Austria, Venezuela, Switzerland and others world wide. He is living his dream, like he says, “Dreams do come true, you have to chase them down!” With all that said, Kiteboarding is a sport just breaking the surface, so watch for kites along the many windy beaches that cover Maui, you may see quite a show.
Maui, with trade winds flowing almost every day, is the Mecca of the relatively new sport, Kiteboarding. The 4th annual Red Bull King of the Air Championship, with a hefty prize purse of $20,000, was held on our beautiful north shore from September 29th through October 6th, and was the first international kiteboarding event in the world, originating in 1997. The winner of the 2002 Red Bull King of the Air Championship and also placing 2nd in this year’s competition, Marcus “Flash” Austin said, “The Red Bull King of the Air Championship has the most clout of any contest. I compete all year all over the world. This is the one I am thinking about all year so that by the time I get here, I’m ready. Win or lose, it’s all about the experience-I’m living the dream!” The preliminaries were held at Kite Beach situated next to Kanaha, a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach, typical of Maui. The 20 top men and the 4 top women competitors of the preliminaries tested their skills at Ho’okipa Beach Park against the preceded 4 men and 2 women competitors in the main event, that began on Thursday, October 3rd and continued through Saturday, October 6th. There were the men and women’s freestyle and the hang time events during the contest. The winds were light and not the most favorable in the beginning of the main event. Towards the end, though, the winds were more moderate, so the competitors were creating more of a spectacle by catching huge air, doing tricks such as board-offs and triple or quad rotations, while covering such distances as 100 feet, then landing ready for more! - true to the nature of this contest, which is highly entertaining for the spectators.
The winner of this year’s Red Bull King of the Air Championship, Mark Shinn of the United Kingdom, had this to say about the event, “I knew it was going to be really tough to beat Flash and after the first heat of the final round I didn’t know what was going to happen. I got another chance and managed to come back in the second heat of finals! Red Bull King of the Air is the most respected competition, to win it is awesome!” In the women’s event, Sheldon Plentovich of Oahu took 1st place and said, “The conditions in today’s finals were challenging.

this a plate of fried Mandoo, the Korean version of the egg roll, and you’ve got a true feast. Another item of note that Biwon does well is the Bi Bim Bap. This is a mix of vegetables, Kimchees, ferns, marinated beef and egg on a bed of rice with a side of Korean-style chile paste. The idea is to add as much of the paste as you like and stir it all up. Be careful, this dish can be quite addicting! Biwon offers lunch and dinner from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., catering for all occasions, and free delivery for orders over $15.00. Sounds just right for an easy Sunday football barbecue. So next time you’re in the store reaching for the pickled cabbage misleadingly labeled as kimchee, call Biwon at 244-7788 and get the real thing!

mixed and buried in the ground where it would slowly ferment at low temperature, maturing into a spicy, deeply flavored delicacy. Kimchee can be made from virtually any vegetable although you’ll usually find it with Won Bok (Chinese cabbage), Daikon (radish), or Cucumber. The other icon in Korean cooking is the sweetly marinated beef short rib known as Kal Bi. I need only sample the Kimchee and the Kal Bi to know if there are real Koreans back there in the kitchen, and Biwon’s definitely got them. They get an “A” in both categories. The ribs are tender and just sweet enough while the Kimchee has a deep heat which somehow stands up beside its robust flavor without hiding

anything. A big heaping mound of steamed rice is all I need to make this a complete meal. This brings me to the third distinctive component of Korean dining: the way it’s served. Your main entrée comes on a plate by itself with the rice in a little metal bowl with a matching lid. This is meant to keep your hand warm, held halfway to your mouth, while your chopsticks are busy snapping up the various meats and other tidbits that are laid out before you. In any reputable Korean establishment a host of side dishes will be served with your meal, spread out in the center for everyone to enjoy; sesame bean sprouts, several kinds of Kimchee, cool and soothing chunks of marinated potato, seaweeds, and more. Have you ever had authentic Korean Cuisine? Would you know if you had? I was raised on the stuff and I can tell you that Biwon Restaurant on Lower Main in Wailuku is the real deal, offering a fresh, flavorful experience that’s good for the body and the budget. You can’t talk about Korean food without talking about Kimchee. If the kind you can pick up on the shelf in the grocery store is the only kind you’ve had, you need to get out and see what this dish is really about. In my grandmother’s time it was the perfect way to preserve the fall harvest through the long winter months. It was traditionally

Journey at the MACC
Rich, Rockin’ and 100% From The Heart To be honest, I haven’t thought about Journey in close to twenty years. Yet, somehow, I can recite all the words to the songs on the “Escape” (1981) album on cue, and when I look back on that era, it always brings a schmaltzy grin to my face - images of seventh grade in corduroys and a super feather-wave hairdo. Come to think of it, the first album I bought with my own hard-earned money was a Journey album. Songs like “Open Arms”, “Don‘t Stop Believin‘“, “Wheel In The Sky”, and “Any Way You Want It” are timeless, and have a way of rekindling the innocence of youthful romance and the rebelliousness of growing up. So when I heard this renowned arena rock band would be making an appearance at the MACC on Saturday, October 12th, I put my sentimental cap on, and took my own journey to a time when being earnest and young and immortal, and passionate about “just rockin’ out.” Though, times change - I sure did anyhow - and youth gave way to another kind of evolution, which relates in a way to the musical transformation of Journey, the band. have come and gone, albums have turned platinum or been forgotten, yet the heart of Journey still beats. Still with the same melodic intensity, but with a greater, more subtle power to rock out. Just like the transformation that occurs when we become adults (ha ha)! Suddenly, I realize music has always played a correlative role in my life, that my roots continue to support my self-creative regeneration, and likewise with Journey. Journey formed in 1973 in San Francisco, first with Neal Schon, then later with Jonathan Cain and Ross Valory, all three comprising the core of which future musicians would later join to continue their musical quest. est lineup consists of Neal Schon on guitar, Jonathan Cain on keyboards, Ross Valory on bass, and newest members Deen Castronovo (who played with Ozzy Osbourne!) on drums, and Steve Augeri (from the band Tall Stories) on vocals. The music of Journey can best be categorized as guitar-driven, album/arena, soft pop/ hard rock. “Red 13” is Journey’s latest release, which they describe as rich, rockin’ and “100% from the heart.” Their previous release, “Arrival” is described as “artful, intense, melodic rock played with passion and superb musicianship.” Listening to their most current music, I definitely get a sense of where Journey came from, and how creatively comfortable they are as they forge ahead into eternal rockdom. All I can say is that if you miss this powerful rock-nroll phenomenon at the A&B Amphitheater (which is THE most awesome place to see ANYONE play!), you will surely miss a pivotal point in your development - both as a revisitation to your past, and as a test/testament to your openness to the present and sure-fire changes of the future. You can be sure to catch me there with my best girlfriends, all dudded out in our tight jeans and concert T’s. Yeah, we’re lookin’ to rock! Reserved seating tickets can be purchased at the MACC box office, or by calling 242-SHOW. Doors open at 5:30pm, the Rockin’ begins at 7:30pm.

heart that she wears on her sleeve, making her an irresistible target for people like her loathsome husband and Ingrid, who works behind the scenes with letters from prison to manipulate her weak prey. When Claire suffers a tragedy induced by Ingrid, Astrid finds her moral center by dressing in Goth fashion and begins taking her mother to task for the destruction that she incites. A romantic connection with fellow detention home guest and cartoonist Paul Trout (Patrick Fugit - “Almost Famous”) helps to give Astrid an emotional grounding she desperately needs. “White Oleander” is British film producer/director Peter Kominsky’s initiation into Hollywood after working in British television for the past decade. Kominsky carries a substantial reputation based on his work on such hot topic films as “Warriors,” about a group of British soldiers in central Bosnia, and “No Child of Mine,” based on the true story of a sexually abused girl who became a prostitute when she was 11 years-old. Shot in just 40 days after a weeklong rehearsal process with the actors, “White Oleander” is a testament to a style of earthy dramatized cinema that deliberately takes on convention and social injustice with equal attention to the emotional subjective consequences that specific situations have on their subject. The defense mechanisms that Astrid develops from the age of 15 to 18 are the very changes that many young people are pushed to by a quickly collapsing American society. The movie assures a social discussion of such issues without commenting or judging its characters.

TheAdvicegoddess Blank Statement A former boyfriend broke up with me two years ago (after he started dating another woman behind my back). Back then, I still had romantic feelings for him, so he refused even friendship with me. I ran into him recently, and he invited me to dinner at a restaurant he frequents. There, the hostess came to our table, and the two of them chatted for 30 minutes about her personal life -- her engagement, etc. -- totally ignoring me. I excused myself to the ladies’ room, hoping she’d get the hint. When I returned, they were still gabbing. I politely suggested she give us some time alone. She graciously apologized and left the table. He was upset that I’d “sent her away,” and said I’d offended her. I replied that I’d felt excluded. He said I should have “gone with the flow,” and suggested I buy her flowers as an apology. I agreed, bought flowers, and returned with him to apologize to her. She said apologizing was unnecessary; she should have given us some privacy. The next time I saw him, he told me that, because of my behavior, he doesn’t want a friendship with me. Could I have handled this situation more graciously? Dinner Theater Say the hostess isn’t all talk. Maybe she grabs your water glass and takes a swig. She sets it down, reaches over, and grabs a rib off your plate. She gnaws the meat off the bone while delivering a monologue about her childhood. Scanning the bone to be sure she’s Hoovered it bare, she tosses it back onto your plate, exploding mashed potatoes all over your
Yourhoroscope ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Travel and business alliances are favored this week. Perhaps the two go hand-in-hand. You end the week exhausted but satisfied. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial affairs are complicated but are looking up this week. When opportunity knocks career-wise, be sure to answer. Something new and exciting is in the stars for you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An issue with a friend comes to a head this week. However, this is resolved peacefully and with no ill will. By week’s end, you look forward to some rest and relaxation. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s time to implement all those plans you’ve been making. Take things slowly at first. This weekend, avoid a tendency to overspend on pleasure pursuits. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You have very clear goals in mind. However, achieving them isn’t that easy. Work hard, and your perseverance will pay off. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A bigwig is extremely touchy as the week begins. This isn’t a good time to initiate any long-winded discussions. Wait until next week for this. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t lose sight of your wallet when out socializing. You don’t want to lose anything of importance. Later in the week, good news reaches you by phone or e-mail.

favorite “Dry Clean Only.” Before you can lift the napkin from your lap to dab your chest wounds, she grabs it and blows her nose into it. Oh, but wait -- is all this before or after she gives your date a complimentary lap dance? HELLLOO? What, exactly, does it take to get your knickers in a knot? You have to have an opinion. You can’t, though, because you have no standards -- probably because you thought you could avoid getting all smelly and tired figuring out “Who Am I?” by taking a little shortcut to “Who Am I With?” You know -let some guy turn himself into somebody and you’ll turn yourself into somebody he likes. Unfortunately, trying really hard to be liked is like having yourself shot out of a cannon into unlikeability. To have a chance at actually being liked, find the guts to be offensive and irritating. Try it. I’m serious. Pass out “Lesbian and Proud and Living In The Suburbs” bumper stickers at a Religious Right convention. Go to a garden store and argue with a bush. These valuable exercises will show you how easy and amusing it will be to stand up for who you are and what you believe in -- once you figure out who you are and what, exactly, that is. That’s your next assignment. It comes with a textbook -- well, two, actually. Get two copies of “The Six Pillars Of Self-Esteem,” by Nathaniel Branden. Read one and cut the other up into small pieces and eat it with a little butter and salt. Do it. I’m serious. Maybe if you literally digest his words, you’ll find yourself too stuffed to eat any more of your own.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Keep financial plans under wraps for now. Only discuss these with a trusted friend or relative. Over the weekend, you’re out and about for fun with your family. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re a veritable silver-tongued orator this week. Take advantage of this to press your case with bigwigs. Later in the week, a domestic dispute is easily resolved. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) If signing any legal agreements, use caution. Be sure you have the proper counsel and know all the requirements. During the weekend, you’ll be doing some shopping for your home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You need to approach an overly sensitive coworker with kid gloves this week. This person is taking even the slightest things to heart. However, by week’s end, everyone’s back on an even keel. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re wildly popular this week. Thus, your company is sought after by friends and acquaintances. Such a prominent place in the spotlight, though, makes you a bit ill at ease. CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS:
