LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR SOL FOR STATE HOUSE This election, there are some tough choices. We have some new candidates and some old. The new State Representative district that encompasses four islands east Maui, Kahoolawe, Moloka'i, Kalaupapa, and Lana'i, will have one of those races. In this new district 13, a former state house rep. and now candidate Sol Kaho'ohalahala is running. I spoke to Sol recently. One of the stories he told me about being in the state house was that the finance committee chair offered the representatives a chance to offer their main issues for consideration. Sol was very clear in telling him that for this district there are really (now) four main areas of concern, each island is unique. This is really important as each of our islands have very different and important concerns. Sol has the experience and the track record to answer these hard questions. He has the experience to work to unite people, and to fight for justice for the different concerns. Let’s educate our other legislatures to this experience of the uniqueness of our outer islands. We need someone who will have the patience and the endurance and the spirit to present our unique issues to the state legislature. Sol Kaho'ohalahala is the candidate that can do this, along with many others that are endorsed by the www.ohanacoalition.org. Dot Grace Buck, via email

GIMME SOMEBODY WITH SUBSTANCE TO ELECT During elections like the current ones, American citizens are imparked with a deluge of nonsensical drivel from aspiring politicians. I suffer through this period, yearning at times for a totalitarian government whose position we would be familiar. Each contestant appears to be cast from the same plastic form, all goody-two-shoes with absolutely nothing significant to say, spare the hollow promises constantly heard during each election. Give me a man or woman who is as good as their word. Someone I can trust. No mealy mouth counterfeit, regurgitating an established sales pitch. Ray Pezzoli Jr., Kihei

EMILY'S LIST FOR DEMOCRATIC WOMEN In Hawaii we often get preoccupied with state and local political races. We also need to think nationally, about who controls the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Emily's List is an organization that supports pro-choice Democratic women candidates. It has a great success record. In the last election, four new Democratic women were elected to the Senate, three of them replacing Republican incumbents. This set the stage for control of the Senate passing to the Democrats when Jim Jeffords

left the Republicans. Those four new Senators were helped by Emily's List. In the last 16 years, Emily's List has helped elect every Democratic woman serving in the Senate, and every Democratic woman governor, plus many women Representatives. They know where the key races are, and they raise large amounts of money from individual women, to counter the millions raised by fat-cat Republicans. You can read more about Emily's List at www.emilyslist.org. Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku

PATSY MINK’S SPECIAL ELECTION Since our beloved representative, the late Hon. Patsy Mink, has passed away there has been much speculation about the special election that will follow her victory. I agree that while she should be honored for her service to the people of this district and the State of Hawaii, her memory should not be used as a shameless political tool by either political party. The foregone conclusion that she will win posthumously fuels the need for a costly special election. Many people argue that the $2 million for such an election is an unwise use of public funds and a gross abuse of power. Indeed it is. With a few weeks to the election, there are many alternatives that could avoid such a huge expenditure. The State of New Jersey replaced Senator Torrecelli after the deadline by petitioning the state Supreme Court and that seemed to have worked despite the loud objections of republicans. They replaced him not because he passed away but because he was politically dead. The New Jersey Democrats re-wrote the rules, why can't the State of Hawaii do the same? Surely if our elected leaders put their heads together over the next few weeks, they could come up with an idea that spares us hard working people the burden of coughing up a lot of money. It would also give the electorate an opportunity to hear an open debate on the issues between two living candidates, an opportunity I am sure the republican candidate would embrace. I don't want to give Gee-Dubya yet another vote for his failed policies but the specter of that $2 million special election just may force me to. Brad Breitbach, Lahaina

DIRTY POLITICS I received a postcard in the mail yesterday which played out Dan Inouye’s promise of a dirty political campaign. The card came from Jim Rouse and the Democratic Party asking me to vote for Jim Rouse and slandering Brian Blundell by claiming he had accepted “tens of thousands” of dollars from the gas and oil companies. Brian Blundell has not accepted a dime from gas and oil companies. Shame on Jim Rouse and the Democratic Party. This is not the way we conduct politics on the West Side Mr. Rouse – we stay on the high ground – issues only – and we do not attach out campaign signs to live trees with 5 inch screws either. DLNR proposes Harbor fee hikes Former Harbor Task Force member says fees will rise 170% Brian Blundell, candidate for the newly created 10th House District, has squared off with the Department Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) over what he called “the latest fiasco” involving the proposed rules and fee changes for Department of Land & Natural Resources/Department of Boating & Recreation programs. “We taxpayers are tired of continually being asked to foot the bill for an out of control state bureaucracy — an arrogant bureaucracy that thumbs its nose at accountability and fiscal responsibility,” said Blundell. Blundell explained that his decision is not a rash one and it came after attending two public hearings and speaking with numerous residents in West Maui, North Kihei and Maalaea as well as his own experience with maritime issues. Blundell has owned Central Pacific Marine, a marine engine repair firm in Lahaina, for over thirty years. Blundell said that the biggest concern is that there will be no accountability that the money would actually come back to the people of Maui who use the harbors and boat ramps for recreation and for their livelihood. “At the two public hearings I attended on Oct 5, this department had the audacity to request tax and fee increases—-without any justification or accounting of where these additional revenues would go,” Blundell said. Blundell also chided the department for amount of the fee increases that would jack fees dramatically for the local people, making it doubtful that many will be able to continue their love of boating and fishing.

“Honolulu can’t balance its checkbook so they come here and raid our pockets to cover their largesse,” Blundell said. “Local people cannot afford a hike that would raise fees a whopping 170 percent…and with no guarantees that those monies would not disappear into the belly of the state bureaucracy in Honolulu.” Blundell also questioned whether the planned increases are even allowable by law. “This department is supposed to adhere to Administrative Rules (13-234-1) which require that fees are set to cover costs of maintaining and operating the boating program, period,” Blundell said. “Is this department trying to skirt these rules and apply these additional revenues for other, non-stated, non-permissible purposes like building new facilities or just adding to the general state coffers?” he added. Blundell said that this is the latest in an ongoing laundry list of abuses “that the State government has heaped on Maui--West Maui in particular.” Blundell also led the opposition to the State DLNR’s State Shark Task Force’s decision to post shark attack signs at Olowalu – the only posted location in all of Hawaii – without holding a public meeting first. “Before any government agency seeks an increase in public fees, it should present a detailed long-term plan with a prudent budget that reflects the costs to carry out that plan,” stated Blundell. “Taxpayers deserve at least that much.” He added that it is now obvious “that the Legislature needs new representatives who will step in and restore control to the people of Maui before we are taxed out of existence by Honolulu.”

The Maui County Board of Ethics took the unusual step of cautioning a candidate about potential conflicts of interest, should she be elected. That candidate, Beverly PauoleMoore, is running against Danny Mateo for the Molokai residency seat on the Maui County Council. The board took its action in a September 18 meeting while reviewing candidates' financial disclosure forms. According to Pauole-Moore's financial disclosure form, her husband, Dale, earns between $100,000 and $200,000 annually for his work as superintendent of the Molokai Branch of Goodfellow Brothers, Inc. He also has a profit sharing plan with them worth more than a million dollars. Board member Michael Inouye of Molokai says the wording of the letter was routine but that it was a little unusual to caution someone who hadn't yet been elected. "Maybe we were a little bit forward about it," says Inouye. But since Goodfellow Brothers does a fair amount of work for the county, he says they thought it was necessary. Board member Ed Bello made the motion to write the cautionary letter, which was unanimously approved. Goodfellow Brothers is one of the coun-

Beverly & Dale Pauole-Moore ty's biggest contractors and does millions of dollars of business annually with Maui County. In calendar 2001 they had contracts worth $3,095,000 with Maui County, according to Financial Director Wesley Lo. So far this year they have about $648,000 worth of contracts. "These are actual contracts encumbered during those years," says Lo. In the October 2 letter, the Board of Ethics said that Pauole-Moore may have to recuse herself from votes effecting Goodfellow Brothers. If elected, at the very least, Pauole-Moore would have to disclose her husband's employment and the profit

sharing plan "whenever the Maui County Council is presented with matters whose resolution would affect this company, directly or indirectly," read the letter, which was signed by Caroline Peters Egli, acting chair of the Board of Ethics. The letter went on to say that she may also need to recuse herself or seek an opinion from the Board of Ethics before voting on matters affecting the company. Sean Lester submitted written testimony before the meeting and also spoke at the meeting. He said Pauole-Moore would have to recuse herself so much because of conflicts of interest; it would decrease her effectiveness as a council member. Lester is a member of the Ohana Coalition, a political action committee supporting candidates from different parties in this election. The coalition wants "new, independent leadership not tied to big money donors," according to their platform posted on their website www.ohanacoalition.org. The Ohana Coalition supported Stacy Helm Crivello in the primary, but when she didn't make it to the general election they viewed Mateo as the best choice. It may be more accurate to say they oppose Pauole-Moore, who they see as a pro-development candidate. "If she is defeated, it will send a message to developers," says Lester. Mateo says he felt pressured by one of the island's biggest developers, Everrett Dowling, Jr., over Mateo's vote to make it easier to enact laws by citizens' initiative. "He wasn't happy with my position and said he would be forced to support someone else," says Mateo, who says this meeting happened before the primary. Dowling says he has met several times with Mateo. He says he never has supported Mateo's candidacy, but that he never threatened to run another candidate against him either. Dowling says he isn't involved in campaigning for either candidate. "I'm staying out of this one," Dowling says. Mercer "Chubby" Vinces of A&B Properties, spoke before the county council in favor of Mateo being appointed to serve the remainder of Kawano's term last July. He says he still supports him. "Either candidate would do a good job," says Vinces. "But I know Danny better." He says Mateo is not anti-development. "Danny will make decisions based on the information gathered at the time," says Vinces. "I feel the same way about Beverly." Pauole-Moore has significantly outspent Mateo, according to the Campaign Spending Commission. She spent $59,879, with $54,000 coming from loans she and her husband made to the campaign. Mateo, on the other hand, has spent about $18,000. He has raised close to $25,000, including an $8,200 loan from himself and his wife. Mateo says he isn't particularly worried about his opposition now, although the Dowling meeting left an impression at the time. "I've gotten over it," says Mateo. He is concentrating on the campaign now. Ultimately the voters will decide November 5.

I know people are on vacation when they come here to Hawaii and I also know that people get a little confused when they go on vacation. They get out of their element and they lose a little common sense. They say things like, "Back in the States, we can get gas for $1.20 a gallon." Well, guess what, you’re still in the States, just an unusual part of it and the same rules apply. If you want to know what the weather is going to be like, turn on the TV. I’ve never liked predicting the weather but it came to a head after all the rains we received last week. Actually, rain is an understatement. It was more like a monstrous downpour so heavy that when I went outside to make sure the windows on my truck were rolled all the way up, I ended up helping a guy named Noah look for wood to build an ark. Once the sun did finally come out, albeit only for a little while, I kept running into tourists with several of the same questions. Questions like "Is it ever going to stop raining?" or "What’s the forecast?" or "Have you seen the radar?" So, in response to these questions, I offer my list of answers. 1. No, I can’t make it stop raining. And even if I could, I wouldn’t because, frankly, I kind of like the rain sometimes. 2. No, it doesn’t rain like this all the time. If it did, we would all be living in canoes. 3. No, last month is not necessarily a better time of year to come to Hawaii. This is the tropics and it can rain like this without warning. 4. Don’t forget where you are. This is Hawaii. The forecast is irrelevant. A storm that was headed our way ten minutes ago could have shifted over the mountains and missed us completely in the time it takes me to tell you this.

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

5. No, I haven’t seen the radar. If I had, I probably would have seen some clouds because, after all, we are a collection of rocks in the middle of the ocean and clouds filled with moisture tend to gather around us.

A BUSH CAN DO NO RIGHT It’s tough to be president these days. It used to be that the president of the United States was the most revered man in the world. Now it seems as if he’s not even the most revered man in his own country. Does anyone remember how quickly the finger pointing began the second the patriotic fervor of 9/11 diminished just a bit? Democrats that were wiping the crumbs from President Bush’s chin one day were accusing him the next of blatantly ignoring warnings of the attacks. They said, "Why didn’t you do anything Mr. President? Are you not a true American"? Now, with the Bush administration directly accusing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein of planning possible attacks on U.S. interests, Bush is met with nothing but skepticism and protests. Going to war with another nation is never a fun proposition for any president, but sometimes we have to trust in the fact that our Commander-inChief has access to information that the rest of us don’t. And if we expect him to launch preemptive attacks in our national interest, we need to have the guts to stand behind him when he pushes for the right to do so. Even after 9/11, people still seem to think of war in conventional terms. All Saddam Hussein has to do is find someone willing to smuggle a large cache of mustard gas or anthrax (and not in the relatively tame powder form either) through the Canadian and/or Mexican border and the falling of the Twin Towers will look like child’s play. Remember during Desert Storm when everyone seemed to wonder "Why don’t we just take Saddam out?" It may not be pretty but maybe now the time has finally come.

On my way to Hawaii, I watched a young couple being "wand searched" in the "S-2" waiting area at Sea-Tac International Airport. I was asked to show my photo id twice. My luggage passed surveillance in the x-ray inspection. Finally, I was ready to begin my vacation trip from Seattle on Flight #29, direct to Maui, Hawaii. However, Captain Brian Parks had a different agenda: He put not only me, but all of us on board to work! He thanked us for our patience and cooperation with the additional security measures. Then he told us that now it was our "individual responsibility" for each and every one of us to help the crew if it were needed, in case of an emergency. I felt both honored and proud to be called upon to contribute to a safe flight in this way. During the flight, I thought the odds were probably in my favor, as I guessed that almost 100% of us on board wanted, and prayed for a safe flight! It was! The man sitting next to me agreed that the captain's plea united all of us on board on that trip across the sky. Thank you, and Mahalo to all eight Flight Attendants: Pepper, Keoki, Yonell, Johanna, Eddy, Casey, Dwayne, and Klendon. Kudos! Pepper said that she'd not heard that request before, but wished that all flights would begin with such a request from the captain!

DIFFICULTLISTENING

BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE

BFAP: MARCH OF THE BANDIT (Living Legends, www.llcrew.com) This guy is cool. BFAP, AKA Sunspot Jonz of LA's Living Legends collective has unrepentantly remained unconventional, creating hard hitting and somewhat jarring beat sequences overlaid with equally unyielding vocals. BFAP raps with a rare intensity, about personal and professional independence, government control, and such. The lyrics (e.g. "I stand here in a silent stained hallway, pained by not being able to say a thing . . . Silence gets us nowhere") are honest and powerful. This album, recorded entirely on 4-track tape, has a nice homemade feel to it. Thumbs up. [The Mole] Boring and uninspiring on the first listen. Not my thing. [Tang Li Wheebs]

THE MELVINS: HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER (Ipecac Recordings, www.ipecac.com) After five other releases on Ipecac in the last three years, the Melvins have finally got it right. Hostile Ambient Takeover is heavy and it rocks, plain and simple. It rates right up there with Gluey Porch Treatments and Ozma and shows that a band lumped in with the "grunge" era can still be relevant and alive. Forget Korn. Forget Linkin Park. Even forget Tool. [Tang Li Wheebs] Really cool. I like it lots. Loud and abrasive, but listenable. [The Mole]

BUSDRIVER: TEMPORARY FOREVER (Temporary Whatever, www.truehiphop.com) As Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album was to jazz, so is Temporary Forever to hip-hop. The album is a completely revolutionary reworking of the genre, and has resulted in a frenzy of criticism and praise. Sounding like a hyped up, rapping James Earl Jones in fast forward, Busdriver is a ball of lunatic energy, frenetically rhyming over melodic fast tempo beats, expertly produced by Daddy Kev, Paris Zax, OD and Hive. Guest vocalists include fellow Los Angeles cohorts Aceyalone, 2Mex, Xololanxinxo, and Radioinactive. This album definitely makes my top 10 list. [The Mole] Funny and smart with good beats. [Tang Li Wheebs]

GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS: LADIES' LOVE ORACLE (Magnetic Field Recordings / Zoe Records, grantleephillips.com) Ladies' Love Oracle, the second solo release from the former Grant Lee Buffalo leader, shows Grant-Lee Phillips mining much more intimate territory than last year's Mobilize. Recorded solo over three days in 1999, this CD was previously available only at his live shows. He has since made a rewarding choice in opting for wider distribution. Easily more accessible than any of his previous works, this no frills recording with sparse arrangements leaves plenty of room to enjoy his glam-inspired vocals and pretty melodies. [Tang Li Wheebs] This is not my cup of tea. Too normal for me. [The Mole]

GRAND BUFFET: UNDERCOVER ANGELS EP (independent, www.grandbuffet.com) Supposedly a concept album about two rappers that are killed, sent to heaven, and then sent back to earth in order to be the best babysitters ever, Undercover Angels is the follow-up to last year's Sparkle Classic album, delivering more of Grand Buffet's trademark abstract comedy rhymes over catchy beats constructed from overthe-top synthesized sounds. With weird lines like "Stereo heat wave emitting motivation to move the sharp blade down the construction paper page, rounding the edges out until a lion mask was made," Grand Buffet gets my thumbs up. [The Mole] Rather geeky and fun. Imagine Bloodhound Gang climbing out of the potty and writing good creative songs and maybe you would be somewhere in their neighborhood. You are not allowed to look at your shoes and mope while this is on the hi-fi. [Tang Li Wheebs] Would you like to hear the music that you've just read about? Visit www.motionrecordings.com/times.html for audio samples and links. The Mole is a local musician and record label owner - www.motionrecordings.com, contact@motionrecordings.com. Tang Li Wheebs is also a local musician and record label owner - www.snailonastick.com, tangliwheebs@snailonastick.com. Send music to be reviewed to Mole & Wheebs; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768.

Halloween on MAUI By

Sam

The Holiday Upon Us The excitement mounts as the question of the day transitions from “How are you?” to “What are you going to be/do for Halloween?” People all over Maui are planning, scheming, organizing or stressing about their costume and celebratory ideas. Pumpkins, witches, and goblins infiltrate our shops and homes, which suddenly become embellished by orange and black décor. Why is this particular celebration so beloved? Halloween is known as many things. A festival celebrated to mark autumn harvest, the beginning of hunting season, remembrance of the dead, reverence to religious ritual, revelry for pagan witches, and a gala for our fantasyfueled mass society. Is there a greater meaning for society at large? What French philosopher Michel Foucault would call a "Heterotopia" where the "extravagances, pretensions and rules of modern-day life could be parodied and openly questioned." Is it a silly event, i.e. another excuse for a party? Is it merely a public demand for cathartic release? Or is it simply an

Why did the ghost go into the bar?.....For the booo’s. innocent children’s event? A chance to consume candy without punishment, dress in costume without ridicule, engage in ghoulish games that would otherwise not be permissible. Is Halloween is just a huge commercial phenomenon - the second largest retail regalia to occur annually next to Christmas? With the mounting anticipation for the upending holiday season that unofficially starts with spooky décor and the pressure to begin such a festive series of events culminating in New Year's Eve, over $4 billion per year is spent on costumes and parties for the season's introductory gala event on October 31st - and everyone's favorite holiday - Halloween. At best, the societal focus of Halloween is fleeting and individ-

ualized. One day out of the year, and how we celebrate it is really quite personal... Halloween is so many different things to so many people – and how one celebrates it correlates with their personal limitations of freedom, their boundaries of sin, the propagation of American culture/commercialism, and the subconscious promotion of sexual difference (hello, cross-dressers!).

Myths & Disguises Halloween seems to be the vehicle in which traditional mores of society can be thwarted, for this one occasion – and what better way to do this than in how we present how ourselves to the public? Additionally, preparation for cos-

tumes can be exhausting and require, for most, an extreme amount of thought and energy in order to convey the desired message or appearance in each person's current state of being. Ask any child what they want to be for Halloween and they’ll reply with the same cheerful confidence that occurs when asked what they want for Christmas. Most kids will choose to be a favorite media figure or icon of pop culture. Many will want to depict the scariest of monsters or villainous characters. Still others will pick to be outfitted in the uniform of what they want to be when they “grow up”. Keiki costume parades all over Maui will exemplify our children’s imaginations in dress. On Halloween, be sure to show off your keiki in full

costume at the most well-known parade in Maui, on Front Street in Lahaina at 5:00 p.m. Costumes are the actual magic of Halloween, aren’t they? Depending on your preference for the occasion, costumes can represent a chance for personal self-creation, or deliberately leave a particular impression upon those you encounter. The illusion of who you aren’t in reality is saying something about who you are. Accordingly, adult costume contests can be the most entertaining part of Halloween festivities, and can be witnessed at various venues all over Maui. Halloween’s most popular costume contest will be at 7:00 p.m., under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Competitions will also be featured at Hapa’s in Kihei, Jacque’s in Pa’ia, and Sansei in Kapalua – be sure to check the Halloween Happenings in this issue! At this time of year, look around and you will see pumpkins everywhere! Pumpkins are associated with certain culinary delights such as Pie and Roasted Seeds, and Halloween, of course. Carved pumpkins with internal lighting, or Jack-O-Lanterns, are the most widely recognized symbols of Halloween. But where did this tradition come from? Of course, in practical historical context, some settlers used hollowed-out turnips for lanterns at the turn of the century, but the juicier story belongs to the Legend of Jack! Jack was a renowned town drunk and trickster. Obviously, due to his many sinful excursions and debauchery, his new friend Satan paid him a visit. Unable to control his mischievous ways, Jack immediately began manipulating ol’ Satan and somehow convinced him to take the form of a sixpence, which he then promptly shoved into his bag marked by a cross, so the devil would be unable to escape. The reason for this trickery? Aw, all Jack wanted was a beer at the pub! Apparently, after the devil stopped making cents, so to speak, he unwittingly paid Jack a second visit. Only this time, Jack convinced the devil to climb up a tree, after which he carved a cross in it (sound like a familiar pattern?) It was only after the cunning Jack made Satan promise not to take him to hell that Jack finally let him go. So when it came time for Jack’s inevitable demise, he was denied entrance to Heaven, due to his endless folly, and when faced with the gates of hell, was condemned by the devil for his trickery and thus, sentenced to roam purgatory forever, his way lit only by an ember Satan had thrown at him from - you guessed it - the fires of hell. Yeah, and the devil also turned him into a turnip or something, which is really just a small pumpkin as far as we’re concerned, right?

The Glorious Festival It is known that the origins of Halloween stemmed from a blend of Celtic, Roman, and Anglo-Saxon rituals, both Pagan and Christian in nature. Some form of reverence for the dead exists in all cultures, and result in evolved celebrations or religious holidays. For most, Halloween is the one holiday where you can

dress up with utmost frivolity and wonder, go out and not be criticized, and most importantly, not be recognized by your closest peers. In America, this tradition has developed into what we affectionately term a “street party”, and can best be epitomized by Halloweek celebrations and parades in San Francisco, Greenwich Village, New Orleans and right here in Maui on the streets of our beloved town, Lahaina. What's great about the celebration in Lahaina is that it remains a close community with limited diversions - everything happens within three city blocks. Although these particular celebrations have been occurring annually since the 1970’s, street festivals are not known to have a long shelf life. Perhaps, due to safety and financial restrictions, certain cities and their townspeople have given up on the idea of a masqueraded block party. Lack of organization seems to be the key culprit in this increasing disinterest. People all over the world visit Halloween’s “Mardi Gras of the Pacific”, however, as the population on Maui grows, along with the reputation for being one of the greatest Halloween parties on the planet, some of the charm of community coalition dissipates. What some say is lost in the throngs of drunken revelers in Lahaina, can possibly again be attained by diverting more serious Halloweenites to a smaller infrastructure and hence, smaller community of upcountry artisans and the like, creating greater alternatives and the option to appreciate a somewhat personal holiday on a more intimate level. The beauty of diversion in creating another street party is that it can enhance safety as well as the social aspect of Halloween. While we do proffer a loyal following to the Lahaina Halloween gala, and perhaps due to its growing popularity and resulting mass hysteria with higher demand for security measures, many Mauians are voicing a demand for alternatives, including creating a more intimate, creative and community-oriented parade and street party on our North Shore, sister town of Paia.

What Are You Going to Do For Halloween?! Whether you plan to be East, West, North or South on Maui, there will be something for everyone this Halloween. In Kihei, costume contests take place at Hapa’s and Sansei, with parties and live music occurring in all of your favorite haunts. In Pa’ia, Jacque’s gets down with its international self and their new costume competition. In Lahaina, The Street Party happens starting with the Keiki Parade and culminating in several smaller parties in bars and restaurants up and down the road. Be sure to check the Halloween schedule of events before you decide! Adults and children, Crossdressers or Super-heroes, your celebration of this cultural phenomenon depends solely on how you view your philosophy of fun and freedom. This particular event idealizes the most vital part of our heritage – its uniqueness and our individuality. Halloween, it’s all about you!

What was your best Halloween Costume and why?

Chris Horton, Napili “My best Halloween costume was a Geek. The girls loved me. They said I was the cutest Geek they have ever seen.”

Tommy Ray Estabrook, Wailuku “One year I was an aluminum foil tin man. It was a hit and I looked pretty sharp. The costume was original and shinny. Plus no one else had the costume.”

Kim McDermott, Waikiki “In the third grade, my mom dressed me as a bum. She ended up foretelling my future because I became homeless for a while.”

Hadassah Stevens, Lahaina “I was a witch one year…it went perfectly with the holiday. I mean a witch is the ultimate Halloween costume.”

Marvin Tevaga, Lahaina “My best costume was a Polynesian person. It was a unique costume and no one had that costume. It was neat to wear it because I got to celebrate my heritage.”

Marc Stiffen, Wailuku “I was a serial killer. I wore a black trench coat, face paint, and I carried a hacksaw around on Front Street. It was the easiest one to put together but the best one I have ever worn.”

Nicole Arkin, Honokowai “I was a naughty angel last year. It was a great costume because I got to wear lingerie on Front Street and the men went crazy.”

Megan Kirkland, Lahaina “I was Captain Hook for three different years. My grandmother made it and it was great because no one recognized me while I was wearing it.”

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES University of Wisconsin-Madison veterinarians said in September they now have the technology to detect the fraudulent use of three udder-enhancing schemes employed on show cows at dairy exhibits. Forty percent of a cow's grade is on how full, symmetrical and smooth her udders are (but unlike in, say, human beauty contests, cow udders are important only for their financial, milk-producing potential). Tests of the milk can detect whether saline was injected into the udder, and ultrasound can reveal whether the udder has received isobutane gas "foamies" or a liquid silver protein that does for the udder what Botox does for human wrinkles. In recent months, at the same time that the Bush administration was mobilizing support for a military invasion of Iraq, other administration representatives were working with Iraq (and Iran, Libya, Sudan and the Vatican, and against almost all of the U.S.'s traditional allies) to resist United Nations worldwide support of "reproductive health services" (including abortion), sex education (except "abstinence") and gay rights. One critic called it "pervers(e)" to blame Iraq for "unspeakable acts of terrorism" while joining them "in the oppression of women."

CAN'T POSSIBLY BE TRUE In September, Washington state Sen. Joe Zarelli acknowledged to The Columbian newspaper that he had collected $12,000 in unemployment benefits in 2001-2002 without declaring that he was also being paid $32,000 a year as a senator, but he blamed the state bureaucracy for not catching him and explaining to him why that was wrong. Sen. Zarelli said he "had no clue" that he was supposed to report his legislator's salary (which would

POLICE BLOTTER From the Bozeman (Mont.) Chronicle, 924-02: "A caller reported at 7 p.m. Sunday that a man was holding a knife to a woman in a car parked in the Albertson's parking lot. Officers responded and determined that the woman was actually using the man's knife to clean her teeth." From the Orem, Utah, Daily Herald, 9-4-02: "Orem police officers responded to a report of someone seeing a man dragging a woman into a residence.... The woman explained that she had been 'playing hard to get' and had been running around until her boyfriend could catch her, and he then played like a caveman and dragged her into the house, (a police) spokesman said."

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES "Shy," "brilliant" (according to colleagues) neurologist Joseph James Warner was arrested in Gainesville, Fla., in August (following a domestic altercation) and charged with illegally storing numerous human heads, brains and other body parts in his home. Warner was teaching at the University of Florida but was immediately fired because the body parts belonged to the school's lab and could not be lawfully removed. A former girlfriend called the Warner home a "hellhole" because of the organ-containing tanks and jars strewn around the house, and a St. Petersburg Times reporter said many of Warner's co-workers described him as a "deeply troubled man." NEWS

Poet Albert Saijo reminds us, in his characteristic capital letters, "IF YER NOT LIVIN ON THE EDGE YER TAKIN UP TOO MUCH SPACE" (140). As a longtime resident of the Big Island, the well-known writer certainly lives on the edge, and the poems of his new volume show how close to the edge he can stand. He has a very clear purpose for being there: "I WANT TO WRECK ENGLISH ONCE-- . . . SO EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT EVERYONE MEANS & NO MISTAKE" (44-46). Wrecking English is, paradoxically, a part of being clear, a lesson that Saijo and his friends Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Lew Welch, and the recently-deceased Philip Whalen, taught and learned as writers of the Beat Generation and the San Francisco Renaissance. Saijo wrote for decades without publishing books as his friends did, but at last, in 1997, our local Bamboo Ridge Press published a substantial volume of his work, Outspeaks: A Rhapsody, his first collection of poetry. Then, in 1998, Grey Fox Press re-issued Trip Trap, the famed haiku chronicle on the trans-America trip of Saijo and Lew Welch as they drove Jack Kerouac home to Northport on Long Island and returned. As he is rarely published, Saijo is rarely seen in Hawai'i's literary scene. His most recent appearances were the "Three Transpacific Wanderers" readings in February and March of 2000, featuring Gary Snyder, Nanao Sakaki, and Saijo, that took place with standing-room-only crowds on O'ahu and the Big Island. Saijo is, however, well-known and respected by friends and admirers Lois-Ann Yamanaka, Eric Chock, Darrell Lum, and others. This summer, Stadtlichter Presse published the first translations of Saijo's work. Stefan Hyner selected works from Outspeaks and created a volume which will be doubly useful with poems printed on facing pages in the original English and German. Hyner's translations, entitled Unverblümt: Eine Rhapsodie, is Heartbeat No. 6 in a series of poetry volumes containing German translations of the work of Ferlinghetti, Whalen, Snyder, Anne Waldman, and the late Gregory Corso. The book is a good introduction to Saijo's work, for his grand range and favorite themes are prominent. Saijo's poetry does the primary work of words: it communicates new perspectives, thoughts, and ideas: "HERE IS A BOMB--IT IS MADE OF WORDS--READ IT & IT GOES OFF IN YOUR HEAD & BLOWS YOU AWAY" (48). One of his favorite modes of poetry is the rant, and when Saijo speaks of humans, he does not spare us the little

eccentricities, idiosyncrasies, and arrogances that diminish us. He minces no words. "ECO MOVEMENT IS PURITANISM APPLIED TO NATURE," he says in one poem. In another, he explores the wisdom we can learn from pigeons: "STRUTTING DOWN THE SIDEWALK WITH AN AIR OF AH YES WHAT A LOVELY DAY--THEY'RE SO SELF-ASSURED AND FEARLESS" (74). He does not spare himself either. Even as he reveals his intent to live as a Buddhist bodhisattva, he admits that such a choice has its ironies: "BODHISATTVA VOWS TO BE THE LAST ONE OFF THE SINKING SHIP--YOU SIGN UP & FIND OUT IT'S FOREVER--PASSENGER LIST ENDLESS-- . . . SO LET US

NOW BE CHEERFUL AS WE SINK" (66). In another poem, Saijo looks up rhapsody and discovers the word means "AN EFFUSION MARKED BY EXTRAVAGANCE OF IDEAS & EXPRESSION BUT WITHOUT CONNECTED THOT OR SOUND ARGUMENT" (12). He claims the word as his own: "MY TEXT IS THE WORLD I LIVE IN-- . . . I WANT TO RHAPSODIZE-- . . . I AM AN ANIMAL IN A CAGE BARKING TO BE LET OUT--AS IT HAPPENS MY BARK IS RHAPSODIC" (14). Albert Saijo is yet another bard in the lineage of Walt Whitman, sounding his own new "barbaric yawp." He barks at his fellow beings, but his words are a rhapsody that challenges us all, and his work speaks directly to us in Hawai'i and America. Yet even as an American of Japanese ancestry, Albert Saijo is not a national poet; he is more. Saijo is a poet of the planet, and his words concern all of us who have the sense, awareness, and concern to do the smallest and most significant thing that any human can do: pay attention.

Nissan Xterra Triathlon Pushing Athletes To Their Limit When people throughout the world think of Maui, they think of tropical breezes, waterfalls, whales and beautiful beaches. On Sunday, October 27th, 400 triathletes from all across the globe will gather on Wailea Beach with very different images of the island running through their heads. Cramps brought on by the unrelenting heat, the steep slopes of Haleakala, jagged a’a lava and the dreaded kiawe thorns will occupy the minds’ eye of the athletes racing in the Nissan Xterra World Championship. The triathlon begins and ends at Wailea Beach, just outside the Outrigger hotel. It’s what lies in between that these racers, both professional and amateur, have been training for all year. The race starts at 9:00 a.m., with a two loop swim, covering 1500 meters, with a short beach run in the middle. (Waimea Bay lifeguard Glen Wachtel holds the men’s course record of 18:10, while Aussie Raeleigh Tennant holds the women’s record of 18:31.) The swim spreads out the field, giving everyone some extra room as they mount their bikes for the next leg. The bike course is regarded as one of the toughest in the sport. While it is only 30k (a little over 18 miles), it will take the riders through over 3000 feet of dry, dusty climbs up the slopes of Haleakala. The features breathtaking views of the island, but the dangers of kiawe thorns and a’a lava on the steep descents will keep most racers eyes firmly on the trail. A spill here will cost you some flesh. This is a course that has been described as “riding your bike up a steep hill, and riding a jackhammer back down.” (Last years winners, South Africans Conrad Stoltz and Anke Erlank, both set new bike course records, 1:27:31 and 1:46:34, respectively.) rains may have changed the conditions on the course a little, washing some areas out, and packing down others, but any way you look at it, it is tough! The course runs through Ulupalakua Ranch land and is closed to spectators. Dirty, exhausted riders drop off their bikes near Ahihi Bay in Makena, and head out for a 7k trail run. The bike course has pushed many athletes to their limits, and the long stretches across the sand (especially the one on Big Beach) start to see riders cramping, shuffling and walking. While the kiawe forests provide welcome shade, the obstacle filled course, that changes from year to year, leaves little time for recovery. The runners head up and down hills and rocks, across beaches, and along narrow trails as they make their way back out onto Wailea beach, to the finish line. Just finishing is a real accomplishment. And winning is even sweeter, as the pros are chasing a $105,000 purse. The amateur racers are looking for personal satisfaction, personal records, and the chance to be an Xterra age group world champion. The top racers will begin finishing at about 11:30 a.m., with the final racers coming across at about 2 p.m. The start and finish areas are open to the public, so come down and cheer on the pros, along with visiting and local racers! The Nissan Xterra World Championship festivities start on Friday, October 25th, with free Xterra University triathlon clinics at the Outrigger Wailea Resort. For those who aren’t racing on Sunday, but would like to see a little of what these athletes are going to see on race day, the Saucony Xterra 5k and 10k trail runs will be held on Saturday, October 26th. The trail run benefits Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Maui. For more information on Xterra or any of the related events, go to xterraplanet.com, or call toll free 1-877-751-8880.

ASP 2002 World Championship Irons Defeats Padaratz For Ultimate Revenge Mundaka, Euskadi, Spain (Thursday, October 17) Current ratings leader Andy Irons (Haw) today defeated Neco Padaratz (Brz) to win the Billabong Pro Mundaka. The US$250,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) relocated to nearby Bakio beach at midday and commenced with quarterfinal heats, followed by the semis, before climaxing with the grand finale and crowning of the 2002 champion and EuroSIMA Grand Slam winner. Waves were 2-3 ft (0.6-1m) at Bakio, though the swell outlook for Mundaka did not appear promising for the remainder of the waiting

better waves and just try and link my ones all the way through and get the bigger turns off. I'm so happy and stoked. He got me in the last one in the final five minutes, so payback is good. "It's definitely in the back of my head," he admitted, of the ratings race now. "I'm not going to count any chickens before they hatch. I'm going to wait until Pipeline (Haw) for the last heat and just hope it all keeps going so well. It's been an incredible year and I never thought one would come together like this for me. I just thank my lucky stars. "Wow, I didn't know," he added, when told of the EuroSIMA bonus. "That's unreal. It's

period. Organizers, together with those surfers left in contention, opted to utilize what they had to offer. While rainsqualls were present during competition today, the major thunder and lightning storm waited until just after the final to erupt. Irons, 24, entered his fourth WCT final of 2002, extremely eager to avenge the loss suffered to Padaratz during the last one in France 11 days ago. The Hawaiian had already won back-to-back tournaments earlier in the year for a commanding ratings lead, but today shot further ahead and pocketed another US$30,000 prize money, as well as the US$5,000 bonus for achieving the highest combined European points over recent events in Portugal, France and now Spain. Against the Brazilian during the 30-minute final, Irons created a strong lead from the outset, with five of his six rides highlighting a desire to win. His second score of 8.75 was the best of the match, and overall he secured a three-wave total of 22.75-points. On one, he even executed a trademark forehand carving reverse 360 in the difficult conditions. "Oh my God," said Irons, as he exited the water. "I'm just on top of the world right now. I knew in these kinds of waves Neco's such a tough competitor to beat, so I had to wait for the

been a long two-weeks. We started off in perfect lefts and ended up here. It's not world class, but it's definitely worthy and I'm really stoked. When you win it's all good." Padaratz, who beat the Hawaiian last WCT, felt the opposite emotion today. The 26-yearold suffered a slow start to his final campaign, but came back in the second half to post an 8.5 and ultimately only require another 7.51 to catch his rival. Having missed three tournaments earlier this year due to a herniated disc in his lower back, he turned his world around during the European leg to jump from 43rd all the way into 18th position on the current ratings. "It's good and all the respect to him," said Padaratz afterward. "It was fun and good to be out there. I'm happy with my waves and the points I gained here. Another final is really good for me and I'm stoked. "I’m looking forward to the next event," he continued, of the upcoming WCT in Saquarema, Brazil. "I've been there a few times and it's such a good wave. Brazil is home and hopefully I can get my back better. I'm still walking and want to be around for a few more years yet."

Shakalaka Fish ‘N Chips Fried Fish Heaven Found Don’t you love it when you find a friendly Mom and Pop shop just around the corner from home serving up great food? If you live in Wailuku you’re in luck. Shakalaka Fish ‘N Chips on the corner of Main and North Market has been offering their family recipes for over a year now and it looks like they’re here to stay. The secret to their success lies in the batter. It’s amazingly light and crisp with a secret blend of spices that you have to

tion plates. The Shrimp and Calamari are both a natural for the secret batter and it’s hard to choose between the two. Not to worry, though, you can pick any combination you want. They also do Ribs, Deep Fried Chicken, Ribeye Steak, Guava Chicken and Veggies. Are you in the mood for something you can pick up and sink your teeth into? Shakalaka does sandwiches too with deep fried or broiled fresh fish, broiled Guava Chicken, deep fried chicken or Crispy Shrimp. I think I’ll have to go

see and taste to believe. Crack open a large, tender cut of Mahimahi or Ono, let the steam escape, and dip your way into fried fish heaven. Whether you choose their zesty homemade tartar sauce plain, spicy, or curried, it’s the perfect complement to this golden ambrosia. Fresh ingredients make fresh food, and there’s no mistaking the quality of the fish used at Shakalaka. I thought the Mahimahi would be the best because of its naturally moist, flaky consistency, but I found the Ono to be even better. It’s firm, hearty texture steams perfectly inside the crisp shell. They’re both a steal at $6.75 a plate with fries or steamed white rice and cole slaw. Spend an extra dollar or two and mix it up with their extensive list of combina-

back and try their Crab and Tuna Melt, a new addition to the menu along with Seafood Chow Mein and Seafood Fettucini Alfredo. Call Shakalaka at 986-0855 to place a to go order if you like, but I suggest you spend a little time and eat in their fun and friendly dining room looking out on Main Street. The festive Halloween decorations that are up right now add a comfortable, homestyle touch. The owners are a husband and wife team who work the place by themselves and put their love and pride into all they do. They’re open Monday through Saturday, 10:30 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and closed on Sundays with delivery service offered Wednesday through Friday. Check them out online at www.shakalakafishnchips.com or stop in at 2010 Main Street to get your own taste of good and fresh family cooking.

Go Jimmy Go Soul Arrival on Maui They say ska is dead. What do They really know anyway? If you like to see live music and have a good time let your senses guide you in the direction of ear candy. Case in point, the eagerly awaited Go Jimmy Go shows here on Maui, one at Maui Brews this Friday and one at Bada Bing on Saturday. Their release “Soul Arrival” on Moonroom records was number 6 on the top ten this summer according to the Honolulu Advertiser’s Billboard hits list, after hitting stores in June. You can get a preview of their sound at www.moonroomrecords.com. With overflowing demand to perform in their hometown of Honolulu (average attendances of 700-1000), Go Jimmy Go made room for a 30 date “Soul Arrival Summer Tour” carrying them across the U.S. in June and July. The mainland run, which featured 16 dates on the Van’s Warped Tour, wrapped up with a sold-out performance at L.A.’s Whiskey A-Go-Go. The band returned home to play opener for No Doubt at the 6500 seat Blaisdell Arena. “Soul Arrival”, which climbed the CMJ Top 200 all summer, enjoyed a peak position of #83 as it made its way onto over 200 play lists across the nation. Packed with undertones of reggae, ska, and soul this contemporary Oahu band is fresh off the Vans Warped summer tour where they made fans in the contiguous states from California to Idaho. Rock steady, classic soul, and ska form the foundation of their well crafted and instantly memorable music. The strong rhythm section and integral horn lines support the charismatic and uninhibited vocals of Jason “Bison” Friedman. Other bandmembers include Ian Ashley on guitar, Cameron Wright on bass, Tino Olsen on guitar, Shon Gregory on drums, Fernando Pacheco on trombone, and Eric White on tenor sax. Carrying a message to “remove yourself and lose control”, they will bring groove worshipers to their feet

with reckless abandon. Opening for No Doubt at the end of summer in Honolulu garnered even more recognition from the Hawaii fans. Their music reflects youthful innocence in overdrive with notes of love, passion, struggle and rebirth. Go Jimmy Go address the human condition with refreshing conviction and positive messages in the infectiously melodic and hook laden songs of their new CD, Soul

Arrival. You can see for yourself the affect it has on their fans at www.gojimmygo.com. Go Jimmy Go is going to jam this weekend, there is no doubt about it, but can Maui audiences get off their okoles? They will be opening up for Reel Big Fish next month, so get your taste of this sizzling hot band now. This is your opportunity to get up and dance to something other than Crazyfingers on Friday night Maui! Check it out.

PICKS DARREN WEST BENEFIT 10:30pm Tuesday, at the Hard Rock Cafe. Music, friends, laughter, Jaxon from Zero Tolerance, Darren’s infectious smile. These are a few of my favorite things. Also featuring Need4H2O in one of the best reasons to go out on Tuesday night. Donations for medical expenses for the most charming man in Lahaina (D!) will be taken at the door. No, I’m not biased - it’s a fact.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW @ HARD ROCK CAFE Wednesday. Hosted by Maui AIDS Foundation. A precursor to Halloween’s evening of debauchery and fun, HRC’s 5th Annual RHP Showing always brings the most fashionably freakish and fun. The best partying takes practice, so start your training here.

LOUISE LAMBERT DANCE 6-9pm Sunday, at Hapa’s in Kihei. We all need a night to dance our asses off from time to time. The Louise Lambert Band can help you achieve this vital goal with Swing, Latin, and R&B - musical genres that were, in the immortal words of Leif Garrett, made for dancing! If you’re like most white boys I know, professional Dance Instructors will also be on hand to, that’s right boys, instruct. Proceeds to benefit the Season for Peace and Non-Violence.

HINTERLANDER 9pm Friday, at DeanO’s Maui Pizza Cafe. Go fetch last week’s Maui Time issue to reread the review on this band’s ingenuity, artistic vision, and infectious ecclectic sound, and then tell me why you wouldn’t want to check them out for yourself! It’s called reading comprehension, okay?!

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Cold Harbor Oh What An Opening Scene! Ghost Ship ( ) While "Ghost Ship" may not provide much more than a series of cursory scary moments over its 88 minute length, the movie's over-the-top opening sequence is worth the price of admission alone. Bright pink lettering introduces "Ghost Ship" as if it were a campy romantic comedy with gentle lounge music playing from a '50s styled nightclub aboard a glamorous Italian ocean liner. Well-dressed travelers dance to the ship's band and elegant chanteuse, oblivious to the impending danger about to snap at their twitching bodies. The following moment of gruesome surprise is drawn out with such gleeful prolonging that the scene goes from shock to horror to comedy and back to shock and horror without missing a beat. Audiences wanting that old-fashioned "Boo" surprise of a Halloween spook-house experience can get a few good thrills in the safety of a darkened movie house with "Ghost Ship." "Ghost Ship" is a horror movie for kids, which goes just far enough over the line with

sex and cursing to have garnered a more appropriate "PG-13" rating. It's a pity because, with a bit of tweaking, the movie could have been a perfectly permissible horror movie for younger teen audiences. But the "R" rating that the film carries acts as an anchor to adult audiences who expect more psychological teasing and plot development than "Ghost Ship" delivers. A tugboat salvage crew gets an unexpected opportunity when Jack Ferriman (Desmond Harrington - "Boiler Room"), a Canadian Air Force Pilot, shows them black and white aerial photos of an abandoned ship floating off of the coast of Alaska in the Bering Sea. Led by Captain Sean Murphy (Gabriel Byrne "Stigmata"), the crew of the Arctic Warrior tugboat agrees to allow the pilot to join them in their salvage effort to claim whatever riches the ship will bring and give the messenger a 10% finder's fee for his trouble. Once on board the giant floating rust bucket cruise liner known as the Antonia Graza, the crew encounters a few ghosts, some truly scary food supplies, and a huge shipment of solid

gold bars valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The crew team leader Maureen Epps (Julianna Margulies - "ER") communicates exclusively with the ghost of an attractive young girl named Katie (Emily Browning "Ned Kelly"), who survived a little longer than the rest of unfortunate people on the dance floor when death paid a visit to the ship in 1962. Blood oozes from bullet holes inside the ship's old swimming pool as the crew struggle to repair a gaping hole in the ship's hull.

But the cold claustrophobic fear that should creep off the screen like a dense San Francisco fog of trepidation never catches on because director Steven Beck ("13 Ghosts") can't match the timbre of the movie to the tone of the ship's foreboding atmosphere. "Pitch Black" was a successful sci-fi horror film because director David Twohy stretched suspense and tension from the mood of the script with his actors' performances. Beck never instills the proper mood of dislocation into his actors, much less does he use the camera as a conspirator to the audience's sense of anxiety - see Roman Polanski's "Repulsion" (1965) for what beautifully frightening camera angles are all about. Tugboat crewmembers meet with sudden deaths that occur off-screen half of the time, leaving the audience to wonder why we weren't included. The ship's ghosts turn out to be not as vengeful as your typical ghosts, and a few more scenes of gruesome flesh-ripping make sure that our attention is held while the true face of evil presents itself. "Ghost Ship" won't rock anyone's world, but it's still an improvement on "The Ring," for which audiences walk out scratching their heads as to what they saw and why they spent their hard-earned money to see such a morass of cinematic boredom. It's just too bad that adults will have to take their kids to see "Ghost Ship," rather than just giving them the money to run to the theaters alone.

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CAFÉ & CINEMA Friday, October 25 Crop Circles 5:00 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater You've seen them in Signs and read about them in Scientific American, now those mysterious geometric patterns have a film all their own, from Academy Award nominated director William Gazecki, that offers a "rare X-Files-like glimpse into the inner sanctum of crop circle experts and aficionado...who believe body and soul that the circles were created by extraterrestrial intelligences. The film is lovely and amazing" (LA Times). Will your reaction be, as alternately suggested by those interviewed in the film, "The sheer wonder and excitement are almost too much to bear", or, "Totally amazing", or, "It's nice to have one or two mysteries left in life." See for yourself and decide. Unrated. 120 min. Presented by Maui Film Festival and MACC. Tickets: $7 w/MFF passport. $10 single.

"Leaves you feeling quietly exalted" (Wall Street Journal). "So hip-swingingly infectious -- it could well become this Fall's version of My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (Seattle Post). In Arabic with English subtitles. Unrated. 100 min. Presented by Maui Film Festival and MACC. Tickets: $7 w/MFF passport. $10 single.

Two Saturdays ago, my daughter was going to come home from college, but she changed her mind at the last minute. That afternoon, a longtime friend of hers showed up looking for her. He and I had flirted in the past, but I had never really thought anything of it. Well, one thing led to another, and he and I ended up having sex. Before I go any further, I want to make it clear that he is of age; that he and my daughter have never been anything more than friends;and that neither of us is cheating on anyone. We have since spent several nights together, and we have enjoyed each other's company very much. We are considering making the relationship public, but I'm concerned with how it will go over with my daughter. Will she be within her rights if she does have a problem with this? Mrs. Robinson Welcome to the Way Too Much Information Age. Want access to a complete stranger's medical records? Well, too bad if you don't, because the next time you're standing in line at the grocery store, you're sure to be treated to some guy shouting "A Brief History Of My Small Intestine" into his cell phone. What's next -- getting dragged into a dark alley at knife-point and being forced to listen to somebody's to-do list? Now, perhaps your convincing ANYONE to have sex with you is so noteworthy that you feel compelled to put out a press release. And, yippee

for you -- not only are you knocking boots, you're doing it with someone you probably used to pick up for car pool. Nevertheless, after "enjoying each other's company" a few times, it seems a bit premature to alert the international press corps, NATO, the Coast Guard, the Kiwanis Club, and your next-of-kin. In other words, there's no time like five minutes ago for you to start practicing the long-lost art of Kiss And Shut Up. Does this mean you're getting a hall-pass to keep doing who you've been doing (as long as you keep your big yap shut)? Not exactly. Granted, you haven't broken any laws, and you claim you aren't breaking any hearts. Still, you sure are working some nasty stretch marks into the boundaries of good taste. The last guy your daughter wants to see in the running to be her stepfather is the snotnosed kid who pushed her off the monkey bars when she was 10. Worse yet, it's all her doing: She's not just her mother's daughter; she's her mother's stud service, too! If she sees it that way (and she's likely to see it that way), you might not be seeing a whole lot more of her. Like, for decades. As the saying goes: "Who says you can't go home again?" Her answer: "Not only can't you go home again; you'd better get a judge to issue a restraining order to keep your mom at least 500 feet away from all your guy friends and boyfriends at all times." ARIES: Situations are out of your control. A time of dynamic energy where you want to jump in and get involved. In order to receive, first you must be emptied. TAURUS: You have the perspective that many people envy. Your calm energy has folks desiring you. Your love life improves as you take risks and follow bliss. GEMINI: Sensitivity isn’t always rewarded. If you appear too money hungry you will repel people. Comfort is easily found in excess. Be charitable. Happiness will follow. CANCER: The richest and most joyful time of the year is upon us. You've decided to be a lover, it feels so much better. This weekend’s Cancer moon will make your heart sing. LEO: Like a bear there are times when you need to retreat to your cave. Let your neighbors know about your creative processes. Work on improving property with a friend. Your intuition is especially strong the 28th - the 30th. Socialize this weekend. be noticed this weekend. Be ready to accept invitations to social gatherings. Make a costume. SCORPIO: At last the darkness is over and the dawn of your existence has arrived. No one takes regeneration as seriously as you. Forgive the brothers that have wronged you. You're able to negotiate rough waters with miraculous ease. SAGITTARIUS: Be your own play station. Your imagination is off the hook. Nonstop laughter follows the movements of your lips. It does you right to be compensated for keeping us in good humor. Risk is good. CAPRICORN: Old business is finished off in order to make room for social obligations. There are some good times in store. Romances bloom. You're not getting older you're getting better. AQUARIUS: "Fight or flight"? This question continues to pop up. Does fighting for your dreams include hurting others? You need friends. Being generous with your creative gifts will pay off in an unexpected way. PISCES: We often don't know what we have until we lose it. You've recently experienced some losses. Something exotic, sweet and yummy is about to arouse your senses. Paint pictures and write songs about the kind of love you would like to have.
