LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR MAUI’S FUTURE There are all kinds of way to deal with garbage. We can bury it, burn it, compost it, recycle it, reuse it, or reduce it. Each one of us chooses the method we feel is right. It’s a personal decision. My husband and I recently chose to recycle and compost as much as we can of the 150 pounds of trash we generate a month. We recycle 80 pounds, compost 65, and landfill 5. It takes less than 10 minutes a day to accomplish this. The majority of residents on Maui choose to bury their trash. Maui sends approximately 384 tons of garbage a day to its central landfill in Puunene. Oahu has a bigger problem. The majority of their residents also choose to “throw away” all of their trash. They generate 4,303 tons per day, 1,319 of which are recycled. The remaining 2,659 tons is split between the landfill and H-Power, their incinerator. H-Power was built to take the pressure off Oahu’s landfills. Garbage tipping fees doubled to cover the cost of the plant. In return, H-power supplies 7% of the island’s energy needs. Unfortunately, it also destroys resources and produces dioxin and other toxins. Resources that we bury and/or burn are gone forever. Recycling gives those resources another chance while saving energy. Composting saves landfill space

and adds nutrients to our soil. It’s up to each and every one of us which way we want to go. We can follow in Oahu’s footsteps or begin changing our habits now. Camille Armantrout Makawao

ORGANIC AND OTHERWISE A few years ago distinctions between organic and other vegetable foods were limited to whether the grower used chemical fertilizers and pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc.) Now, buying or growing organic food is also the only option for people avoiding irradiated and genetically engineered (GE, also called biotech) foods. The technology of Genetic Engineering (GE) is the practice of disrupting/altering genetic blueprints of living organisms. This technology is wielded by transnational corporations, which patent these new blueprints and sell the resulting products (foods, seeds, pharmaceuticals) for profit. For the first time in history corporations have combined genes from unlike species, patented them, and become the owners of these new life forms. Concerning meat production, organic meats are the only ones consumers can be sure weren't produced from animals fed other animals (ground up at rendering plants, pulverized into brown powder, about a quarter of which is fecal matter, these "protein concentrates" are used as an additive to livestock

feed, and almost all pet food). Also, organic is the only option for avoiding antibiotics or hormones in meat or dairy products. Biotech/GE companies advertise they are creating crops requiring less pesticide. Yet, 71% of acreage planted in GE crops in 1998/99 was herbicide tolerant (for example, round-up ready crops). This means levels of herbicide can be used, which would otherwise kill the plant. Crops designed to kill insects accounted for most of the remaining acreage. One example is pesticide potatoes. The New Leaf Superior, marketed since 1995, produces pesticide in each of its cells. These potatoes, along with all GE products, are not labeled. It is estimated that 2/3 of products on grocery shelves contain GE ingredients. Lobbied hard by BioTech/GE interests, the FDA has caved in to industry demands, and has not required labeling of GE products, although 80-95% of Americans polled want GE foods labeled. Thus the only way to avoid them is to eat organic. Tryptophan, a dietary supplement used safely by Americans for years, when manufactured with GE bacteria, produced toxic contaminants. Before being recalled by the FDA, the GE tryptophan wreaked havoc. Thirtyseven Americans died, 1,500 were permanently disabled, and 5000 became ill with a blood disorder, eosinophila myalgia syndrome. The British Medical Association has called for a global moratorium or ban on GE foods. The New England Journal of Medicine stated

"the allergenic potential of these newly introduced microbial proteins is uncertain, unpredictable, and untestable." Scientists warn that GE foods may well set off allergies, increase cancer risks, and produce antibiotic resistant pathogens. There is a wealth of information on the web concerning the vast environmental and health risks associated with GE foods. Simply type "Organic Consumers Association" into your web search engine. ANOTHER VIETNAM? It's eerie how much this War Resolution reminds me of the start of the Vietnam War. The fake rhetoric is the same, the real political and economic causes are very parallel, the Congress, the media, the polls, and the pundits support it overwhelmingly, just as they did Vietnam. The only opposition is scattered, individual grassroots activists, universally condemned for being unpatriotic. That will change over the next ten years, as the war grows. Probably the general public won't oppose this war until we re-institute the draft. This time, let's start with the Harvard and Yale freshman classes. Let's not let anyone whose father is in Who's Who get into the National Guard. Better yet, let's start with any Senators or Congressmen or Presidents who skipped Vietnam. Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

SPEAKING OF SIGNS It’s that beautiful time of year again when whales are going to start arriving in our waters. The first sighting was already confirmed last Sunday morning with a mother and her calf in between Molokini and Kahoolawe. Each year though, that first sighting of whales means one thing: use caution on the roads! Whenever you see a whale breach, it’s easy to see why they’ve become such a tourist attraction. In that sense, it’s easy to understand why tourists get so flustered over a whale sighting. It’s like you or I going to the Serengeti National Park and seeing lions. However, it is not easy to show understanding when someone stops the car smack in the middle of the road at the mere sighting of a spout. It’s even harder to show understanding when someone crosses the center divider and hits another car head-on just because they were looking for whales. The State of Hawaii puts up signs warning of shark attacks after three attacks in the last 11 years. Using that rationale, shouldn’t they put up signs warning of possible collisions with overzealous tourists? It makes it easy for me to appreciate the beauty of my home when I see other people pay to visit, but it doesn’t do any of us any good if those people go home in body bags. During whale season, adequate warnings need to be posted within rental cars – not just when picking up the car from the rental agency – telling drivers to monitor normal driving procedures at all times. Unfortunately, it probably won’t happen until it becomes a liability issue for the state.

DON’T PUT YOUR NICKEL IN THIS FOUNTAIN After watching the World Series and all the kids on display in the Giants dugout, I realized one thing: this country loves its youth. Why else do we idolize athletes so much? Because they get to do what all of us wanted to do when we were young: be rich and play games. Whether we play them or live vicariously on the couch through someone else playing them, sports allows people to remain forever young. And if that doesn’t work, there’s always plastic surgery. Popularized by Peter Kelder’s novel of the same name, the Fountain of Youth tells of a legend handed down by Tibetans about a super-remote village in the mountains where monks could regain their youth. It became known as Shangri-La and it’s legend holds today with mantras such as "No man is free who is a slave to the flesh", or "A feeble body enfeebles the mind." Obviously, whoever made that up never went to the Fountain of Youth Institute in Palm Harbor, FL. Run by a plastic surgeon, the "Institute" depicts a beautiful naked lady sprouting from a fountain on the cover of its web-site, essentially implying that with a nip and tuck, you too can be young and beautiful or attract someone who is. Blatantly holding onto one’s youth has gotten so bad that Cryogenics isn’t even a taboo subject anymore. If you thought it was bad when Ellen DeGeneres came out of the closet, just wait until Howard Hughes comes out of the freezer. Then we'll really know if staying young is worth it.

Pacific Rim Film Premieres Hawaii International Film Festival Premiering new works from Asia and the Pacific Rim, the Hawaii International Film Festival will screen more than 30 features and documentaries at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, the Ritz-Carlton, and Maui Community College, November 8 through November 10. Among the feature film highlights, the hit Australian comedy "He Died with a Falafel in His Hand" follows an aspiring writer on a wild journey through crumbling shared houses, crazy flatmates and awkward relationships across four Australian states. The quirky characters we encounter include Russian neo-Nazis, pagan lesbians, and drug addicts. Filled with vivid imagery and vivid characters, the Hollywood Reporter praised, "Could this film be headed anywhere else than directly for cult status?" And Australia's Urban Cinefile agreed it is "set to become a cult flick." Rell Sunn, often referred to as the "Queen of Makaha," is a Hawaiian surfing legend honored in a new documentary "Heart of the Sea", receiving its world premiere at the 22nd annual Hawaii International Film Festival. Rell, who died in January 1998 of breast cancer at the age of 47, was known worldwide as a pioneer of women's professional surfing. In the islands she achieved the stature of an icon - not only for her physical power, grace and luminous beauty, but also for her high-profile community activism. Named one of Hawaii's most influential women by ABC, Rell - whose Hawaiian name means "Heart of the Sea" - was eulogized in the New York Times for having "captured the heart of Hawaii during a 14-year battle

with cancer." Right up to her death, she continued to surf, educate and act as a grassroots ambassador of aloha spirit. A quintessential water-woman, she excelled at all watersports, including surfing, bodysurfing, spearfishing, and open-water outrigger canoeing. In the days when there were no women's surf events, she would enter in the men's events and beat most of them. Instrumental in establishing the Women's Professional Surfing Association and founding the women's pro surfing tour, in 1977 she was selected as Hawaii's first female lifeguard. Always ready to help others in need, Rell often explained, "the aloha spirit is real simple, you give and you give and you give…and you give from here(the heart), until you have nothing else to give." "Heart of the Sea" screens at Maui Community College Ka Lama 103 on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m., and the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Sunday, November 10 at 8 p.m. The first Asian-American production picked up by MTV Films, "Better Luck Tomorrow" is a powerful, stereotype-shattering portrait of bright Asian-American high school students caught up in dangerous extra-curricular activities. When it premiered at Sundance, Rolling Stone hailed the film as "the best and most provocative entry in the dramatic competition," while Roger Ebert concluded, “it's an extraordinarily accomplished and thoughtprovoking film." Just selected as India's choice for foreign Oscar nomination, "Devdas" is an epic tale of passion and lost love. The most expensive Hindi film ever made it was praised by the Chicago Tribune as, "exceptionally moving and deeply satisfying… a dazzling, lyrical Bollywood musi-

The AIM Program – The Technology of Prayer in Healing In regard to Stephen Lewis, EMC2 and the AIM Program: Everything is energy. Everything and everyone has a frequency. Those frequencies that are out of balance with our natural harmony can be identified and removed. I know this to be true. I have seen the Sanctuary process at work. I practice it daily. My entire family participates in the AIM Program and I have seen wonderful results. This is real, it is transforming, it is true healing, it is a giant step into the inevitable future where each of us is our own personal, transcendental and totally enlightened healer. I have found that in my higher self and so can you. It is available now. – Dr. Wayne Dyer, Author, Lecturer, Spiritual Teacher Now more than ever, spiritual exploration demands that we open to expanded possibilities for understanding and affecting the healing and advancement of all dimensions of our lives – especially in the physical arena. As we more fully understand that the foundation for the physical is the “metaphysical”…that all creation is energy in unique vibration…new vistas emerge. Stephen Lewis, through his AIM program, is a pioneer in this new territory of healing. – Reverend Dr. Roger W. Teel

Rell Sun is the Heart of the Sea cal that welds powerful technical sophistication with a deeply emotional story." Packed with endearing characters and comical situations, the Swedish/Arabic production "Jalla! Jalla!" is a humorous tale of culture clashes and sexual crises. The two main immigrant characters face daunting predicaments; one can't get an erection and has resulting anger management issues, while the other has been "chosen" by his family to marry an unknown Lebanese woman and has difficulty telling his current Swedish girlfriend about the wedding, which is only a week away. A huge box office hit in Sweden, the Toronto Sun praised: "A lighthearted, feel-good story, with moments of sweetness, high ribaldry, slapstick and wry cultural observations." Among the other new docs screening at the Festival are a surfing/skateboarding package including the world premiere of "History of Pipemasters." This new film gives a history of Pipeline from its unruly beginnings to becoming the pro surfer's ultimate ride, with a stellar surf cast that includes Gerry Lopez, Greg Noll, Kelly Slater, Bruce and Andy Irons, and Sunny Garcia. "Strapped" features stunning and exclusive footage of the biggest waves ever surfed, chronicling the history of the "tow-in" surfing movement originated at Jaws, by the world's greatest surfers, includ-

ing the "Godfather" of big wave riding, Laird Hamilton. An amazing skateboarding documentary, "East Side" follows three professional skaters who journey from the US to Hong Kong and Taiwan's premiere skate spots. The crew includes Kien Lieu, nicknamed 'Donger' who can jump over stairs, railings, walls and anything else that can be jumped, and Satva Leung, a rising star in the skateboarding world and whose specialty is sliding down rails and walls. "Black Picket Fence" is a poignant portrait of the bleak reality of life in the public housing projects of Brooklyn's East New York that takes us beyond the usual stereotypes of the rap world and into the life of Tislam Milliner, a struggling rapper who's ambitious to make it out of the "hood". Black Picket Fence is the Winner of the Spirit Award & Best Original Score, at 2002 Brooklyn International Film Festival. Brazilian director Sergio Goes will attend the screening. A pass available for $30 provides entrance to all screenings. Tickets for individual films are $6 and $5. For more information about this year's festival call 573-4242 or visit HIFF's website at www.hiff.org. Money Makes The

World Go Round

Your Guide to The World of Tipping By Travis Henderson

8

NOVEMBER 7, 2002

COVER STORY

Random House defines Gratuity –the act of tipping - as such: a gift of money above payment due for service, or something given without claim or demand. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, then how come it’s not? Tipping has become such a contentious subject in our society that pop culture devotes entire scenes to the subject. Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs has Steve Buscemi flatly admit to not tipping. "I don’t tip", he says, and leaves it at that. He then explains that he shouldn’t have to pay someone to do their job. It was meant to be humorous, but as anyone in the service industry on Maui will tell you, there are many people who live by that credo. Basically, in the restaurant industry you are relying on someone else’s generosity for your livelihood. If someone had a bad day driving to Hana, your tip is going to reflect that. If they came to dinner looking for a good sunset and got rain clouds instead, guess who suffers? But if you work in that kind of business, there are certain times you just have to take it. There are many places around the world where the gratuity, or service charge, is already added into the bill. If they think you deserve a little extra, you get a few extra dollars and that’s where "tip" comes from. Foreign tourists often come to Hawaii and figure the gratuity is already added in. You then get a table that runs up a bill for $250 bill and then leaves $260, saying "the rest is for you". But can you fault them? Unfortunately, no, because it is their culture so you just smile and move on. There is a name for this kind of tip, but there are many other names as well.

The Verbal Tip. This is when everyone is finished with dinner and they happily tell you that you were the best waiter, this was the best dinner they ever had and yes, they are ready for the check. You bring them the bill thinking you’ll make a few bucks and the guy leaves you less than 10%. But hey, he’s all smiles as he heads out the door and you just got what’s known as the verbal tip. The Canadian Tip. This can also be known as "The Wooden Nickel" and suffice it to say, Canadians are not the only ones guilty of inadvertently stiffing waiters. As said before, many people from other countries are used to the gratuity being included in the bill. They are not used to tipping so they don’t. Unfortunately, the IRS is so accustomed to waiters being tipped they automatically tax 8% of the sales. This means that if you stiff the waiter, he actually pays to wait on you.

Tipping the bartenders: This one’s easy. If you want to get drunk, tip early and tip big. But what if there are multiple bartenders? One pours you a drink and you give him a good tip. The next time around, a different guy gets your drink. Did your previous tip go to waste? The best idea here is to check their system. If the bartenders have specific stations, which is usually the case, you should tip big right off the bat. If they move around like in a big nightclub, then $1-2 per drink is okay. Friends and Family: What about sitting at the bar or having a waiter who is a spouse, friend, or co-worker? Are they hooking you up out of kindness or do they just want an astronomical tip? This depends on the people in question but if you ever want to get hooked up, then you better be prepared to do some hooking up as well.

yourself. For those of you who can’t tip someone for carrying your luggage, think of it as an easy way to get inside knowledge. After all, these people live year ‘round at the place you are visiting and they know all the best spots and more importantly, all the spots to stay away from.

Tipping for future services: If you leave a bad tip at a restaurant and never go back there, it’s really not going to hurt you. If you have a bellman tote your luggage up 13 stories and then flip him two singles, your name is immediately going to be known by every other bellman and the valets as well. Your car will be parked on the far side of the lot, guaranteed. And you know how the valet sprints off in the direction of your car like he’s in a hurry? As soon as he’s out of sight, he slows to a crawl and leaves you standing there for 10 minutes. You flip the

Tipping on bad service: This can be kind of questionable because there are a lot of reasons you get bad service. Are you getting bad service because the waiter is slammed or because he’s in the back jawing with his friends? Is the waiter clueless or just new? Is it even the waiter’s fault? I’ve seen waiters get stiffed because the hostess was rude to them. I’ve also seen waiters get stiffed because the cook was mad you returned the food and left it on the grill for ten minutes. If the waiter fills your water glass once at the beginning of dinner and never again, dock his tip. If you’re meat is underdone and he does his best to fix the situation, don’t dock his tip. Tipping a bellman: This can be more important than tipping a waiter because you’re hoping for good service down the line. You give the waiter his tip after the meal is done and by then, you’re out the door. With bellman, you see them at the beginning of your journey and the money you give them can be the difference between clues to better restaurants, better sights, and general shortcuts to things you might want to do on your vacation. For a bellman, a decent tip starts at $5. If you’re only going to tip $1-2, save yourself the money and take the bags up

you are going to use their services in the future, it’s better to give too much than not enough. After all, these people are in charge of what you look like. Most hair stylists say that 20% is normal, yet there are no standard criteria. As Pam Brittain of Maui Hair and Body Supply says, "On a standard $22 cut, I’ll get anywhere from $5-10. But either way, when that person walks out the door, they are my personal advertisement and that is more important than their potential tip."

The Starbucks tip: You can’t walk into a coffee shop or a sandwich counter without seeing a mayonnaise jar on the counter, TIPS written in red ink on masking tape on the outside. What’s next, a tip jar at McDonald’s? On one hand, they’re only pouring coffee or making a sandwich but on the other hand, if you order half caf/decafe-double espresso-latte concoction, maybe they deserve a little something. And they have the guilty thing going on you, which is why they use such a pathetic little tip container. You could also call this the sympathy tip if you want but either way, the change you get back from your order usually suffices in this situation. The Costanza Paradox:

bellman $10-20 upon arrival and you literally get a star by your name in the ledger they all keep behind the bell desk. This guarantees your car gets front row parking and you will never have to wait for more than 30 seconds, a crucial point if you’re running late for dinner or a show.

Tipping on a haircut: As a male, I’ve always had trouble knowing how much money to give the person who cuts my hair. Like the theory applied when tipping a bellman, if

Make sure the person you tip knows you’ve tipped him. Seinfeld had an entire episode where George Costanza got caught with his hand not in the proverbial cookie jar, but rather the tip jar. He was at a sandwich counter and went to throw some money in the tip jar but the guy behind the counter turned his back at the same time. As George later explained it, "If he doesn’t see me leave the tip, how’s he supposed to know I tipped him?" So George reaches his hand back into the jar to pull the money out so he could put it back in when he was sure the guy was watching. Only problem with that was the guy turned around right when George had his hand in the jar and ended up thinking George was stealing from him. Hilarious episode indeed but it points to the fact that if you are going to tip someone, it’s in your best interest to make sure they know. It can be hard to know when and how much to tip. But as the old adage goes, you get what you pay for and it helps to remember that when thinking of tipping. When handing someone money, you automatically change your relationship. The amount of money decides the amount of change.

PHLEGM: ONE NIGHT STANDS WITH OUT OF TUNE INSTRUMENTS IN A ROOM WITH BLUE WALLPAPER (Three Sides of A Circle, www.3sc.org) Phlegm's debut album is a big surprise. Seeming to come out of nowhere, this guy has stunningly poetic and clear lyrics, delivered with dramatic instensity, backed by melodic and crisp beats. Ranging from rap to spoken word, the broodingly introspective lyrics remain a constant barrage of intricately woven, image-rich vocabulary. Already at work on his follow-up album, phlegm is definitely one to watch for in the future. [The Mole] You can look at your shoes and mope to this one, that is if you aren't too bored. (Warner Bros.) The latest Flaming Lips is an insanely beautiful album with not one bad moment on the entire disc. Believe the great media hype and just go get it cause the critics know what's up this time. Named after and featuring the guest vocals of Yoshimi P-we of the Japanese noise band the Boredoms, this lush, floaty record fits all occasions and moods. Not bad for a bunch of 40 year old men. Check them out opening for and backing Beck on his latest tour. [Tang Li Wheebs] Beautiful and weird. I like it. [The Mole]

SONIC SUM: PLASTERMAN EP (Sky Pimps/Ozone Music, www.ozonemusic.com) Sonic Sum, recently instated into the New York-based Definite Jux collective, makes complexly layered and melodic songs, anchored with somberly recited lyrics. The music is a mixture of synthesized samples and more organic-sounding instrumentation, complemented by Rob Sonic's gritty science fiction-styled lyrical imagery. The result is futuristic-sounding, like this recording could be the soundtrack to some high tech inner city ghetto sci-fi movie or something. Also worth checking out is Sonic Sum's Sanity Annex album, which is slightly more mellow and laid back, also available from Ozone Music. [The Mole] A little too homogenous for my tastes. Second chance I have given them this year and nothing has been too memorable. [Tang Li Wheebs]

THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN WITH MIKE PATTON: IRONY IS A DEAD SCENE EP (Epitaph, www.epitaph.com) First off this is the best thing that Epitaph Records has ever released. Now that that is out of the way, we are left with a great little release that is a pretty interesting combination of forces. To begin with we have Dillinger Escape Plan, a band known for their brutal precise sound and lack of a consistent vocalist. Then add Mike Patton, front person for Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Faith No More, Fantomas, Lovage and Peeping Tom. Think Mr.Bungle with only the Metal/Noise parts or Fantomas with less start-stop Dynamics and actual lyrics, then add an Aphex Twin cover and you will come pretty close to guessing what this sounds like. Only four songs that clock in at a little over eighteen minutes, but it's a fun little ride.[Tang Li Wheebs]

THEMSELVES: THE NO MUSIC (Anticon Records, www.anticon.com) I like this. Mike Patton is the coolest. [The Mole] Themselves vocalist Dose One has a really weird voice, like a muppet or something, kind of gravelly and high-pitched. Aside from voice, his vocal style is also abnormal in that sometimes he raps extremely fast - faster than anyone I've heard - and sometimes he sings. Rounding out the duo of Themselves is Jel, who is responsible for the majority of the instrumentation and computer sequencing, creating carefully crafted, constantly changing break beats. Together, these two have created an album of non-stop groundbreaking originality. Although many hip-hop fans may find it too radical of a departure from hip-hop's traditional combination of simple rhyme patterns and minimalistic drum loops, those who are bored with mainstream hip-hop may find The No Music a welcome breath of fresh air. [The Mole] Original and catchy. Requires repeated listening. [Tang Li Wheebs]

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES A business consulting firm teaching how to use astrology to increase profits was inaugurated in May in San Francisco by two former telecommunications executives (and ex-Marines). Bruce Cady and lawyer Tom Mitchell founded Jupiter Returns to show executives, for example, that a failed business collaboration may have been prevented simply by understanding that one's associates "(act) out their (astrological) program." Mitchell told the San Francisco Chronicle that the firm's best customers are women. Performance artists and computer gamers staged a cockfight night in a basement in Los Angeles' Chinatown in October, attracting about 200 people to go down-culture, drink beer, and wager on "roosters" flapping and pecking and clawing at each other, except that the cocks were humans dressed in garish rooster outfits. Tech people had rigged the outfits with sensors to register the effectiveness of the fighters on a large screen that exhibited virtual blood.

(ASP)2002(WCT) Itauna Beach, Saquarema, Brazil (Saturday, October 26) Taj Burrow today defeated fellow Australian Mick Fanning to win the Mundial Coca-Cola de Surf 2002. The US$250,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) recommenced this morning with remaining round three heats, and then continued right through until climaxing with the grand finale this afternoon. Clean 3-4 ft (1-1.3m) waves were on offer, with good right-handers coming through on sets. A passionate beach crowd turned out to support their Brazilian surfers, as well as cheer on the international field. Burrow, who hadn't won a WCT since 1999 when he took out the same event in Rio, also placed runner-up in 2000. The 24-year-old showed his determination today, however, overcoming the hardest opponents en-route to victory and the US$30,000 prize money. The West Australian was rated 6th leading into the Mundial Coca-Cola de Surf 2002, but following the win moved up into #3 and can still mathematically clinch this year's world title if he reaches both upcoming finals in Hawaii and wins at least one. Against Fanning in the 35-minute decider, Burrow trailed for the first half, but after locking in an 8.0 for an amazing re-entry into aerial maneuver, he then struck the lead with his next ride and furthered it on another. Riding his last wave in, he raised his arms in disbelief, overwhelmed with emotion. "So stoked," screamed Burrow, after being carried up the beach by a group of fellow Australian competitors. "That's amazing," he continued, when told he was still in title contention. "I'm so stoked and am definitely going to go mad in Hawaii this year. Fanning, who began his second final of the year in form, ultimately required another ride worth 7.26-points. Despite executing a carving reverse 360 on one wave, as he did in South Africa when he won, it wasn't enough this time around. Still, the runnerup placing pushed him from 12th into 6th position on the ratings. "So stoked still," said Fanning afterward. "I knew Taj had an 8.0 and I needed to get something over a seven. I was just stoked to be in the final. It was always going to be hard with Taj and well done to him. I didn't do that well in Europe, but am just stoked to get some confidence back for Hawaii." Equal third today were Russell Winter (UK) and Kieren Perrow (Aus). Both received US$10,000 and a major jump up the ratings following their semifinal finishes. Winter, Europe's sole representative on the WCT, was the standout yesterday and

kept his focus and momentum going against Australians Nathan Hedge and then Beau Emerton today. Burrow proved to be strong, however, opening his account with an 8.0 and ultimately leaving the 26-year-old searching for his own ride worth 8.15-points. The result is the best to date for the Newquay surfer. "I made a mistake at the start by not paddling out first and getting the inside position on Taj," reasoned Winter. "That was the difference, and why I was winning all my earlier heats. I came down a bit late and he was already out there. He waited and when the sets came got the two best ones. I think if I'd gotten his waves I probably would have surfed better, and definitely think I could have won. "I'm so stoked," he continued. "I was in a zone where you don't get stoked when you win, you just keep going. So I'm definitely happy now to finish off near the end of the year with a result like this." Perrow began his clash with Fanning on track by posting a 7.5, but than sat too long with priority while his opponent got to work. Toward the end he required an 8.51, and while he caught another set, wasn't able to increase his tally on it. Nonetheless, the WCT newcomer has already established himself well within the current top 10 with his second consecutive semifinal finish. "I guess I played my game well at the start," said Perrow. "I got my first quickly and then wanted to just wait with priority for another good one. I blew it by letting Mick get a couple underneath me and I respect his scores. My goal was top 10 and I'm just rapt," he continued, of his current position. "Hopefully I can achieve it. I can't wait for Hawaii." Finishing equal fifth in the Mundial Coca-Cola de Surf 2002 were Beau Emerton (Aus), current ratings leader Andy Irons (Haw), runner-up Luke Egan (Aus), and Rodrigo Dornelles (Brz). Irons increased his lead with a quarterfinal finish, but was stopped by Burrow in their anticipated re-match from their semifinal the previous WCT in Spain. The Hawaiian led for the majority, before his opponent posted a 9.1 ride and then consolidated the lead with another 8.9 score on his last wave. Irons required a perfect 10-pointer to catch the West Australian. While the pressure is on his rivals to try and catch him, he can secure the world title with a finals berth in either Hawaiian tournament. "Coming into Brazil I wanted to at least better a 17th (place finish) and I did that with a quarterfinal," reasoned Irons. "I knew Taj would be really hard to beat out there cause he surfs so well in these conditions. He got a good wave while I had priority and I thought I'd need a bigger set, but nothing came. "I'm on a flight tonight and am so psyched," he continued, of heading home to Hawaii. "I can't wait. Haven't been back in like two and a half months, so it's going to be incredible. See my family and just cruise. It's been a good

Pierre Tostee, ASP

Burrow Defeats Fanning In All-Australian Final

Andy Irons (Hawaii) continues to dominate start to the winter season already, with a couple of big swells, so hopefully it continues. I'm so psyched for Sunset and Pipe." Egan, who kept his world title aspirations alive this morning by defeating fellow Australian Shane Powell, was his usual patient self against Fanning. It wasn't until his opponent had already secured the equal best single score of the day for a 9.25, that he found a wave of value himself worth 7.75-points. While also adding ratings points, he was frustrated not to make better use of the opportunity following Irons' loss the heat prior. He basically needs a win and at least another semifinal finish to claim the world title. "I let him get that 9.25 under me when I had priority," explained Egan, of Fanning's best ride. "I didn't think he was going to get it, and it was an epic paddle. I felt like I was surfing good enough, but just took bad waves at the beginning. Pretty frustrating. "Looking at the bright side," he continued. "The year before last I lost to Sunny (Garcia) here, when he took the world title, so at least I have Hawaii. It's probably going to have to be a big effort on my part, but hey, I'm up for it."

Dornelles secured his best result to date and was the last Brazilian in contention. Despite leading for most the match, a patient Perrow was rewarded with the best single score of 7.75 toward the end and swung the decision. "I knew Kieren is a very good competitor and he waited for the best waves," said Dornelles. "That's it. I tried my best, but maybe next time? I feel good and it's a good result for me. I hadn't had a good year so far. I'm much more confident now, as I was always losing in contests before. It's good to make some heats." Greg Emslie (SAfr) caused an upset by defeating current #4 Joel Parkinson in round three this morning, putting an end to his world title campaign. The South African was then stopped by Perrow the next heat, collecting his second equal ninth placing of the year. The WCT now moves to Hawaii, where the world title will be decided in either of two 'Prime' contest venues. Halloween has come and gone and the seasons roll around again toward winter. There’s a definite nip in the air as I cross Baldwin Avenue and enter the cozy, firewarmed ambience of Makawao Steak House. Red meat and red wine are what I’m looking for to thicken my blood for the months to come, and I think I’ve come to the right place. The menu is just what I expected: classic and comfortable. The cutting edge fusion game can be tiresome at times and the time-honored selections offered at Makawao Steak House are a soothing relief. Steamer Clams, Artichokes, Shrimp Cocktail, and Sautéed Mushrooms top the appetizer list. Fresh Ahi Sashimi, Poke, and Spring Rolls are

warning that “you’d better be hungry for this one”. They do offer a more reasonable, though still large, twelve ounce cut with Au Jus and Horseradish Sauce. The five steak preparations are what catch my eye next. A twelve ounce Top Sirloin heads the list, broiled plain or marinated in Teriyaki, followed by a twelve to thirteen ounce New York cut and a nine to ten ounce Filet Mignon with Sauteed Mushrooms. These are big steaks! I pick the Pepper Steak, a New York cut panfried with cracked peppercorns and a Spicy Brown Brandy Sauce, with a baked potato and all the trimmings, and my wife chooses the Filet Mignon with mashed potatoes. These both come with a small Caesar salad but we opt for the all you can eat salad bar for $3.95 extra. The salad bar is the definition of simplicity.

My wife and I choose the Calamari Strips and Escargot to get us going, and they arrive very quickly after a basket of soft, warmed bread. The Calamari is a thick, tender breaded steak sliced into strips and topped with a velvety lemon caper butter sauce. The portion is generous and the flavor is lusciously clean and simple. Escargot is a delicacy I’d acquired a taste for many years ago. The key here is not to look too closely at what you’re eating. Scoop the buttery baked little morsel onto the garlic bread, chew slowly with your eyes closed and you’re on your way to eating like a king. I’ve certainly brought a royal appetite with me but I’m a little intimidated by the Kalaheo Cut of Prime Rib. It’s listed at twenty four ounces or more with the bone in and comes with the

Greens, carrots, sprouts, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons and dressings are the bulk of the offerings, with chopped fruit and sunflower seeds to garnish. Well, I asked for comfort food and this is pretty much how my salads looked when I was growing up. A nice bottle of young Australian Shiraz complements our entrees which arrive steaming hot. The mashed potatoes are creamy and delicious, the baked potato nice and crusty on the outside, and the steaks are cooked just how we wanted them. Our meal is good and very satisfying, yet lacking some indefinable quality that would push it over into “excellent”. I think I’m just getting a little spoiled in my old age, chasing down that perfect meal. Makawao Steak House is located at 3612 Baldwin Avenue at the lower end of Makawao. They offer Poultry and Pork as well as daily fresh fish preparations, Kalaheo Shrimp, and Alaskan King Crab Legs. Call ahead at 5728711 for reservations or walk right in and enjoy pupus by the fire in their comfortable bar area.

"Eat Well, Love Well, and Paint Well." Pat Masumoto Rediscovers Her Artist Soul Pat Masumoto was born and raised on Maui, the gifted child of prominent parents Judge George Hasegawa and recently honored Mrs. Florence Hasegawa (Maui County’s Outstanding Older American Woman of the Year). Born with a strong natural talent for art and encouraged by her father, she sold her first piece for $200 at the tender age of 10. He took her to board meetings where Pat would draw under the table as a way of entertaining herself. When speaking of her parents, Pat says with a chuckle, "My father was a softy and my mother is a samurai." Pat has always been drawn to people, "especially underdogs." In the spring of 1960, she visited Tennessee through an exchange program with the prestigious, all black, Fisk University. Inspired by seeing Martin Luther King speak, she became an activist for the newly empowered civil rights movement, including being dragged out of racially segregated lunch counters – a lively thing for a petite Japanese girl from Maui to be doing at a time when Hawaii was barely a state. Eight years later, Pat and her family traveled to Europe where they lived for two years. During an extended stay in Rome, she studied under Italian painting master Sandro Trotti. Every morning was spent on classical drawing techniques, while every afternoon was a free-for-all where experimentation was encouraged. With her natural talents she quickly became the teacher’s pet, although she also recalls the drudgery of painting Greek pillars over and over. From Rome, they moved to Amsterdam, where, Pat studied sculpture and soaked up all the culture she could. Busy with her studies, raising two boys, and traveling

in a foreign country didn’t slow her down - she was always ready to help out, including spearheading an art auction to raise money for starving children in war-torn Biafra. Returning to Hawaii, Pat earned a degree in Educational Psychology and became a humanrelations consultant for some of Honolulu’s prominent businesses. Being an adept problem solver and a naturally "niele" (curious) spirit served her well. In 1989, she moved back to Maui where she enjoyed all the trappings of success homes, cars, money, and respect. In 1995, she traveled back to Rome with a friend. While there, she looked up her painting mentor, Sandro Trotti, and was delighted, but not surprised, to find that he was still at the same address after 27 years. "Nothing changes in Rome."

Trotti clearly remembered Pat and invited her to his studio. Her visit with him resulted in a lifechanging epiphany. He told her that in 35 years of teaching, he could count on his fingers the number of students that had real promise, and Pat was one of them. She was left speechless. Flooded with guilt, she confessed to him that she had chosen to pursue psychology, not art, for all those years. He looked at her sternly, drew her near and uttered the words that would turn Pat’s life upside-down, "Mangi bene, Ama bene, e Vernicia bene - (Eat well, Love well, and Paint well)…or you will surely die a miserable death." Pat knew he was right. She began to seriously question her life. Upon returning to Maui she shocked her clients with the news that she was giving up her business to pursue her love of art. That was 7 years ago, and she is showing no signs of changing her mind. Since that time, she’s completely restructured her lifestyle, sacrificing a lucrative career to embrace a simpler life in order to paint. As she made the difficult transition, she was faced with an even greater challenge; a bout with breast cancer. She used the crisis as inspiration for her rediscovered art, which culminated in her being invited into important art exhibitions, including Art Corp II on Kauai. Pat often uses art as a form of emotional therapy to help herself, and others, through life’s challenges. An optimistic honesty gives her work its unassuming presence and beauty. Her paintings are as texturally rich and colorful as her own life and story. Open and thriving for a year and a half, her cozy little gallery in downtown Wailuku named Gallery Ha, (meaning "Breath of Life”) is a place for people to gather, talk story, and enjoy art. After 16 "First Friday" events including poetry, theater, music, and storytelling, what’s in the future for Gallery Ha? Pat quotes a close friend, "The past is past, the present is now, and the future is open."

PICKS HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2002 We don’t get many opportunities to view the most current independent films here, so when we do, let’s show our appreciation and support by actually going to see them. Hey! - there’s even movies without subtitles for the moaning masses of lazy viewers I know.

POLO IN THE COUNTRY Who says Polo is for stuffy aristocrats? 2500 years ago, polo contestants used to carry the heads of their opponents! Heck, load up the truck with some Pabs Blue Ribbon or Milwaukee’s Best, grill up some flank steaks, and tailgate your way into the world’s oldest extreme sport, Maui-style! Paint your face like an NFL Football fan and cheer on the contenders in each chukker (period), ready to do the wave at the drop of a ball or swing of a mallet (pole stick) & dance with gusto to Hot Apple Pie. 1:30pm, Sunday in Makawao.

BY WATER ALL THINGS FIND LIFE Whales are here - and no matter how jaded you might be, how self-centered and sad, how busy and stressed, how frustrated and angry, a moment spent with your toes in the sand, and/or the seabreeze blowin’ in your hair, staring out at the ocean, and knowing that the circle of life exists under the surface of all things - with or without you - well, it just may set your soul free, my friend. Or, at the very least, make you look very deep and sensitive while you’re doing it.

JACKASS: IT’S NOT JUST A MOVIE You know how you go to the movies, and maybe you’re in the mood to be scared, so you go to a “Horror” flick, but you nearly fall asleep from boredom? Or maybe you’re in the mood for a good laugh, so you pick a “Comedy”, but the movie ends up depressing and smirky, at best? Well, have I got the solution for you! A two-for-one theatrical adventure, if you will. Laugh your ass off, AND be frightened at what mere mortals can accomplish with a little beer and nuts (and I don’t mean peanuts, okay).

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

The Idiots Morons So You Don't Have To Be ) Jackass: The Movie ( It's only fitting that Paramount Studio publicity execs are still wiping egg off of their typically smug faces since the film that they refused to press screen, for fear of the lambasting that critics would give it, is a runaway hit. That surprise success sits well with a demographic of rubber-necking audiences who identify with the masochistic punk ethic of a handful of laid-back white guys acting out dumb stunts to impress each other and their fans. Based on MTV's short-lived TV show - it ran from October 2000 to August 2001 due to Senator Joe Lieberman's criticism because kids were hurting themselves copying stunts - "Jackass" follows our renegade social upsetters (lest they be called "terrorists") doing wacky stuff like snorting wasabi or eating a "yellow" snow cone. Gang leader Johnny Knoxville takes the brunt of the raucous violence as when he allows himself to be shot with a riot

control beanbag projectile or when he's beaten semiconscious by "Butterbean," a professional boxer, among the sharp-edged aisles of a Los Angeles sporting goods store. You'll wince, you'll yell, you'll thank your lucky stars that it isn't you doing all that gross stuff, and isn't that what entertainment is all about? Part of the satisfaction of watching things like Johnny Knoxville rent a car that he soon smashes to smithereens in an all-out crash derby is the "candid camera" set-up element to the humor. Yes he's really returning the wreck of a car to the rental company and refusing to pay for the damage, but we know that at the end of the day the company will be handsomely reimbursed. The point is that Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Jason "Wee Man" Acuna, Dave England, Chris Pontius and Steve-O were given a 5 million-dollar budget to blow on whatever nutty stunts they could devise. Travel was on the priority list as the boys show up in Tokyo and Mexico doing

things like tightrope walking with a hunk of meat over a pond of snapping crocodiles or dressing up in panda suits and frolicking around Tokyo like a bunch of dimwits. Animals play an important part in the fun as when two of the boys fill their transparent cheese cloth swim trunks with a few pounds of shrimp and go diving in a contained area of whale sharks. There's a lovely giant 25 footer and a slew of smaller sharks going koo koo for ko ko puffs all over the midsections of the divers in a scene that would make Jacques Cousteau roll over in his grave more than once. Questions about what these guys' parents think of their arrested development is addressed in pranks involving a late night firework raid in a sleeping couple's bedroom or when Bam Margera's unfortunate mom comes home to find a 10 foot gator crawling around on her living room floor. It seems fairly certain that the guys invented their own stunts since each dude gravitates to an area of specialty. Steve-O, for example, is the

tattoo king. On his back he sports a gorgeous life-size rendering of himself giving a double thumbs-up. So it's not much of a surprise when we see him getting a half-assed tattoo of a smiley face while riding in the back of a Hummer being driven off-road at full-tilt boogie by former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins in the aptly titled segment "Off-Road Tattoo." The resulting black speckled mess of irritated red skin on Steve-O's arm doesn't much resemble a smiling face, but then again neither does SteveO's expression. Still, we get the overriding ethic; life is short why not f*ck with it. Tom Green caught unwarranted censure for his comic masterpiece "Freddie Got Fingered." But that wildly hysterical movie would sit well as a double-feature companion piece to "Jackass: The Movie." Both movies are certain to become cult classics, and at only 80 minutes long, "Jackass" leaves the big screen a bit too soon, and there are no plans to do anymore now that Johnny Knoxville has moved on to a real acting career.

MASTER THE IMPOSSIBILITIES

Last year, I started sleeping with a married coworker. We've been hooking up regularly ever since. Although it started off "just sex," it's become more. She's been talking about leaving her husband for me. I'm all for that. But, if she cheated on him with me, wouldn't she cheat on me with another man? She'd only been married for six months when we got involved, and she admitted that it wasn't the first time she'd strayed. Am I right to worry? The Cheat Of The Moment

I've known this guy for about a year and a half, and we're becoming very close; actually, we're almost inseparable. The problem is, he says he's afraid to get into a relationship with me because he still has feelings for his ex-girlfriend. (They've been separated for a year, and she now has a new boyfriend.) Do you think he just doesn't want me at all? Roadblocked

Maybe she had a novelty wedding, with all the guests in fake noses and glasses, and little cakes of rubber vomit scattered randomly down the aisle. And maybe when she recited her vows, she added, "Oh, but I was only joking," after each one, or maybe she just said, "I do...jest!" If, in fact, she had a more traditional ceremony, it should be clear to you where she falls on the cheating issue: in bed with somebody she shouldn't be. There is, however, some variation in where her partners fall: Sometimes a guy's somebody she's cheating on; sometimes a guy's somebody she's cheating with. Make it permanent with her, and you should soon see how it feels to be on the butt end of the whoopee cushion.

in a lazy sort of way. Don't wait for someone else to make the first move. You have more power than you give yourself credit for. Make a list of your needs. SCORPIO: Meditate before you activate. The most useful tools often have a myth attached to them. Make up a myth about yourself and invite others to celebrate it with you. Make peace with the men you have karma with as well as with the men you feel have deceived you. SAGITTARIUS: Be glad for the dark for you still have time to get ready for your dawn. Imagine yourself as a dry seed getting its first soaking of water. You need to soak nutrients up in the dark before you can emerge into the light. CAPRICORN: It is you that can bring light and civility to these dark times. It's a great time for a "Sady Hawkins" style dance where the gals ask the guys out. Your sense of freedom is enhanced. Work on projects that provide a service to others. AQUARIUS: Brain power seems to be in short supply these days. Fortunately your wit and wisdom is boiling over in such proportions that sand bags will be needed to protect others from your "brain storm". Your talents are in the spoken word and creative ideas. PISCES: Learning the deeper truths has never been easier for you. Expose a lie this week. Make fun of corporate propaganda. Write a song or poem that expresses your angst. You normally play it safe. ARIES: Before the weekend hit's you would be wise to take care of business. By Sunday you'll want to get together with friends. On Tuesday and Wednesday your psychic radar is functioning to the point that people, dreams and deja vu's blend into your reality. TAURUS: Approach the weekend as you would an adventure. Add fun and spontaneity to your work scene. By Tuesday and Thursday you'll be meeting with friends and celebrating your freedom. While other's run for cover your calm spirit is a refuge. GEMINI: You're working hard at maintaining your health and contributing to your work. At times you find yourself surfing intense emotions and high demands. Divide your biggest tasks into manageable smaller ones. Slow and steady gets the job done. CANCER: Find the origins of creative beauty in your life. Find ways of expressing yourself that leads to joy. Artistic talents need to be marketed to the most appreciative audience. Both Friday and Saturday nights are good for romantic activity. LEO: You may need to re-establish your relationship with your mother or your sister. You may need to consult a brother or a male friend on this issue. Your richness continues to expand into good humor and optimism. Partnerships become inspiring and exciting. VIRGO: Enjoy the peace that comes from things slowing down. Occasional boredom is a sign of good mental health. Allow yourself some time to drift off into outer space. Walks along beaches and creeks will prove to be extra therapeutic. You've been listening to too many selfimprovement tapes. No sooner does Tony Robbins blind you with those big teeth than you're sure you can sell mink toilet seat covers to the executive board of PETA...or have a relationship with somebody who's still in a relationship with somebody else. Does this guy want you? Well, yeah. He wants you to keep him company so he won't have to curl up in a fetal position and pine for his ex-girlfriend all by himself. If that's thekind of relationship you've always dreamt of, by all means, follow your dream! Do, however, remember to pack a picnic basket and a blanket so you and your dream won't get cold and hungry while you're camped out on his exgirlfriend's front lawn.
