LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR EH BRAH REBUKE! To “Sick of the Fart...” Just for the record the tourist that sucker-punched me and then ran away made a full confession to the police that it was an unprovoked attack he was completely responsible for. Ask them yourself. But being the spineless little creep you are the truth does not hold the ghoulish satisfaction you get from acts of violence you lack the courage for. If “innocents” have been harassed then they should make the proper reports instead of writing anonymous infantile letters to this paper. Actually I wouldn’t mind leaving the island if I knew it would be safe from antisocial mental cases with a history of drug addiction such as yourself. So if standing up to weasels like you has diminished my reputation with your group then I have succeeded. And should your twisted vision of the “beauty of aloha” include being subjected to the terroristic threats of drunks and addicts then by all means count me out. But this isn’t about “Aloha” is it? It’s just you lashing out over the premature baldness. Unless You’ve Tried to Make a Living at 505 Shut Up

RECYCLING TASK FORCE

Kiva Rivers, photo: C. Rogers

Bad planning and lack of initiative on the part of government and community leaders resulted in a recent decision to allow Oahu's landfill to increase in height by 30 feet, giving them just eight more months of landfill space. And then what? Add acreage to the landfill? Nearby residents and businesses are loudly opposed to that plan. Send more stuff to H-Power for incineration? Not all trash can or should be burned, and no incineration method is completely 'clean.' Maui will soon face a similar situation unless we make some wise decisions now. Three task forces have studied this problem during the last 13 years. All three came to the same conclusions: 1. Anything that can be recycled, composted, or reused on Maui must be as opposed to buried in the landfill. 2. Based on 'equitable user fees', called Pay-As-You-Throw; recycling must be rewarded while throwing stuff in the landfill must not. 3. The people of Maui must have the option of taking clean, usable material to a materials recovery facility (MRF) where it can be sorted and made available for re-use. These recommendations have been developed and refined over decades in communities on the Mainland, Europe, and Canada. We don't have to invent anything. What we do need is good planning and initiative on the part of our elected representatives. Oahu is providing us with a wonderful example of what happens when we ignore the inevitable and fail to seize opportunities to do the right thing, the right way.

EH BRAH POEM Hey! You folks in Makawao Whose roosters crow all the time Don’t you know you’re thieves? You stole away the quiet And your neighborhoods’ peace of mind Don’t you see your kids run amuck Your dog poo’s in other’s yards Can it be that, maybe here, You are a bunch of retards The people who you live around Have made a plea to you: “Please stop the incessant crowing And do something about your dog’s poo We know, it’s no secret, You don’t like anyone on your block But try to be civilized Show a little heart Don’t go crying if, someday, Your cluckity-ass chickens End up as a dinner on someone else’s plate Cooked to absolute perfection A move like that would be quite bold A move I couldn’t do Besides, the real retards are not the roosters, The real retards are you I really with we all agreed To get along at last The world is going down fast And if we start running out of food You’ll be the first we’ll ask: “Hey! Will you share that chicken A tasty meal it’ll make” Or will you continue your journey Of mindlessness and disregarding your neighbors and your Chickens’ fate Crowing for Peace in Makawao

DEAR MAUI TIME Thank you for your 'Voting for Dummies' section in last week's edition. How great to see everything laid out in one concise format. You obviously did a ton of work to get this together, and as one voter, I thank you. I also liked your listing of the political affiliation of each of the Maui County candidates; what's up with this 'non-partisan election' stuff that appears in other publications ? Just joking: I do know the reason for this, but yours was the only newspaper to list the real affiliation for each candidate. You have a great local newspaper and I hope the folks of Maui County realize what a service you provide. FREE...... Mahalo to Tommy and the staff at Maui Time. Nellie Hargrove, Haiku

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

IT’S JUST POLITICS AS USUAL I tell you, you’ve just got to love political elections. At what other time can you watch grown men and women revert to child-like bickering and posturing? When else can you watch people use the memories of their deceased friends to get more votes? With the recent elections finally in the can – except for Alabama, but more on that in a minute- the term "politics as usual" is going to take on new meaning. First we had Patsy Mink here in our own State of Hawaii. She passed away from health problems and the immediate reaction was whether or not the public notification of her death was meant to keep her on the ballot. Then, our very own distinguished Senator Daniel Inouye urged the people of Hawaii’s to cast their votes for her in honor of her legacy. Is Sen. Inouye implying that our votes are nothing more than a symbolic gesture? The scary thing is, Patsy Mink garnered 60% of the votes! What does that say about the people who knowingly cast their votes for a deceased candidate? At the same time that politicians all over the country are trying to convince people to come down to the polls because every vote counts, 60% of the people who voted in Hawaii just cast their votes for someone they knew couldn’t hold office – on the advice of Hawaii’s own senator!

MINNESOTA’S DEMOCRATS DON’T UNDERSTAND IT MUCH BETTER Minnesota’s Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone died in a fiery plane crash not long before the election. Being a long standing Senator, the news of his death hit fairly hard in Washington and people from both sides of the political spectrum

wanted to show their respects. That was fine, according to the Wellstone family, so long as they didn’t do it in person. Citing Republican efforts to "get back to business as usual" too soon after the death of their loved one, members of Wellstone’s family denied many Republican requests to come to his funeral. I’m curious what the Wellstone family would have preferred. Should the nation’s business have been put on hold until the family had had a proper grieving period, and then Republicans could get back to work? People die every day and our nation does not stop operations for any of them.

AND YOU THOUGHT PRO ATHLETES WERE SPOILED One more example of poor sportsmanship in politics and that’s it – I promise. It seems that the Alabama incumbent governor learned a thing or two from the Florida presidential election debacle a few years back – you know the one, where the votes had to be counted 45 times. Unfortunately, what he learned was that if you don’t want to admit defeat, all you have to do is demand a recount. Alabama Gov. Don Siegleman who is (Surprise!) a Democrat, lost by a slim margin of 3,117 votes to challenger Rob Riley. I think the problem lies in the fact that Siegleman held the lead for almost the entire day and he got his hopes up. When the final tallies were brought in and the advantage reversed, his feelings were hurt and he decided that playing fair was not on his agenda. "Recount the votes" he screamed. "I won darnit, I know I did, you just have to keep counting the votes until I win!" Even when the state’s Attorney General blocked the recount, Siegleman continued to act like he won, espousing the new policies he would enact in the new term. He’s beginning to sound like a baby who’s having his toys taken from him and if this is the foundation upon which we build future elections, we’re all in trouble.

The First Assembly of God Church typically constructs and runs a Hell House every year around Halloween at their Kings Cathedral on the corner of Dairy Road and Puunene Avenue. This Halloween was no exception. Billed as a kind of haunted house expressly designed to “scare the hell out of teens;” it does this by presenting extreme teenage/adult issues in a dark hellish context. What would drive a person to dress up in a silly costume, bring a candid camera, and pay a visit to the Hell House? Certainly curiosity; (how inventive or cheesy could it be?) Perhaps rebelliousness was a driving force; (I didn’t like the fact that in a previous year an acquaintance had had a camcorder that he was openly carrying confiscated; only to be returned under threat of lawsuit, days later, minus his video tape.) Maybe the most powerful motivation for visiting was that as a parent of a child, soon to be a teenager, I wanted to evaluate the message that was being conveyed by this attraction. The Hell House was well attended, after paying my $5 (with discount coupon); I waited over an hour to get inside. The line outside was made up of as many adults as it was teenagers. Although the flyers had stated that it was an event for 12 year olds to adults, it was obvious that the waiting line contained a fair number of 9, 10, 11 year olds. It was a little unsettling that the security person near me let in a small group of under-12-year-olds after hearing them lie about their age. At least that group had an adult with them. Hell stinks. Or at least the smell of rotten cheese is the first thing you notice besides the darkness upon entering. We had been taken inside in groups of 12 - 20 people and met by a demon guide. The female demon was a masked and hooded creature with a sarcastic late night TV crypt keeper’s voice. She initially lead us through some run of the mill spook house frights including wispy hanging things that brush against you, the sound and then the sight of a hockey-masked guy with a chainsaw, and some death-not-so-warmed-over looking individuals hanging out along our path. Then she got to the first “real fright.” “Here’s where they put the unwanted babies; Oh, excuse me, FETUSES;” and then very clearly “Well, at least they’ll never be able to say ‘I wish I was never born!’” This, as we slowly passed by a tub of what appeared to be bloody fetus parts, labeled with a sign saying: Warning! Biohazard, Wasted Human. We kept moving. If you’ve ever thought you’ve seen a dirty apartment or dorm room, you ain’t seen nothing by comparison to the filthy, drug den that we entered! All in one room,

it seemed to try to represent all the reasons for turning to illegal drugs and then all the disastrous consequences that could arise from that lifestyle. There was a pale, grumpy teen sitting in a chair complaining about the lack of rolling papers, one teen succumbing to the peer pressure of another to do drugs, still another noting that they got into it because their parents had done drugs. Unexplained, but perhaps a drug consequence, was a girl in obvious agony, rolling back and forth on a mattress with a great deal of blood on the legs and crotch of her pajamas. Was it an abortion or a brutal rape, I don’t know. I also don’t know if the toilet, near the center of the room, filled with TP and amazingly lifelike turds was meant as comic relief; it certainly had that effect on me. Much in this room seemed over the top; the littered floor, the toilet, and the bloody girl in agony. There was more agony to come. “Now you’ll actually get to see a soul go to hell!” shrieked the demon as we entered yet another room. Judging by the pentagram on the wall and the alter-like candles around it, this was evidently the Satan worship room. A very pale teen lay writhing in pain on a raised bed. Dry ice smoke started to rise and then all of a sudden, diabolical arms came out of the bed and pulled the kicking, screaming teen down to hell. Our demon mocked, “Buddha can‘t save you and Mohammed can‘t save you!” I guess in the demon’s estimation, we were about to meet someone who could. Further down the corridor, we came to another teen in agony. This time it was a girl with paper notes taped to her clothing that read “gossip,” “hate,” “jealousy,” “greed,” and “addiction,” The demon taunted her with insults and sarcasm as she rocked back and forth in the fetal position, balled up on the floor. Suddenly, a twenty-ish blonde, cleanshaven Jesus in a flowing white robe came to

the rescue and drove the demon away. We were all encouraged to take one step forward to signify that we accepted Jesus; or as the clean cut Jesus noted, “we could go the other way.” After a brief prayer, we were lead out of the Hell House into a well-lit room where we were asked for feedback and for our names, addresses, and phone numbers. With my curiosity satisfied, I departed hell. Not like a bat out of hell mind you; it had taken too much out of me. I let go of an audible. “Wheew!,” which sparked a conversation with another departing person. They noted that, “it was surprising that a place that was supposed to be a sanctuary would defile itself in order to make some moral point. It was like they became their own enemy. Weird.” It did seem a little strange. How does one begin to evaluate such a production? I think not by the quality of its theatrics but more by the message that was communicated. For me, it was a high fear message mixed with black and white thinking. Its either choose Jesus or you get hell, suicide, being tormented by demons, and a room full of unhappy stoned people surrounding a toilet filled with fresh turds. The Hell House raises some tough issues that need to be discussed with teens, preferably in an open, loving environment; these issues shouldn’t just be shamed to hell. In favor of keeping the lines of communication open and unpolarized with my child, I prefer to keep my child out of the Hell House. It is possible that the production has been toned down over recent years; I had heard stories of mock abortions with lots of blood and feet in stirrups and of satanic mock human sacrifices on pentagrams. Perhaps there is more openness. In all fairness, I didn’t see a sign forbidding photography and I WAS asked for my opinions before leaving. I encourage others to form their own opinions.

Daniel Kealoha Native born, self-taught artist and local art scene outsider, Daniel Kealoha, comes out of the shadows to tell us his story.

Kealoha’s visually dense and emotionally challenging art is proof that our remote islands are not exempt from broader global issues. From Kealoha’s dexterous fingers, comes a bizarre mix of Juxtaposed and contradictory images, with contents as seemingly random and unrelated as cartoons, nature, lust, fear, politics, pop culture, corporate icons, or just about anything else imaginable. Reminiscent of high school doodles, yet far more profound, his drawings are phenomenally executed. One can feel the feathery weight of his pen on the paper, attaining the most subtle nuances and details. “ I like to reward the person who is willing to take the time to look” His figures are aware of their own presence, physically real, and strangely familiar. Things that shouldn’t normally exist together somehow – coexist. Just as his visual imagery is full of the contradictions of modern life, so Kelaoha is not the person one would assume him to be. From his artwork one imagines a pyscho-rebel with a rough exterior; but, as it turns out, he is a loving husband and father, and one of the most sincere, humble and sensitive people you could meet. In fact it is this very sensitivity that is the driving force behind his creative obsessions. His deep concern for our human predicament is reflected in his art like a dark and twisted funhouse mirror, or a psychic autopsy of modern hyper-culture. Those closest to Kealoha are often reminding him that he shouldn’t get so worried about things that he doesn’t have any control over, but Kealoha, a self-proclaimed TV addict, can’t help but take it all in. The reason that Kealoha’s imagery has such a strong if not, upsetting effect on the viewer is because the sentiment that he depicts is universal. Life is made up of some of the most beautiful and enjoyable things like a gorgeous Maui day, the dignity of nature, or a child’s favorite toy. Yet, these joys co-exist with life’s

other realities like consumerism, over population, dwindling resources, or corrupt political leaders. “These drawings contain a little bit of everything in life.” remarked one admirer. Although his work does see the light of day on occasion, it normally remains confined to sketch books. For the first time, Daniel has 100+ drawings on display privately. “And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” says Daniel shaking his head at his own obsession. Along with the drawings and a handful of paintings, he is also showing a series of large collages entitled, “Television” from 1988. The collection of meticulously cut-out squares are like uncensored mirrors of the sound byte age. The 24-year-old pieces reflect not only television, but also, prophetically, the Internet’s intoxicating hedonism and addictive lure. When asked of the mysterious origin of his challenging art, Kealoha says, “I can say that while I’m painting or drawing, the artwork starts to consume me at some point. It sort of takes over and invents itself out of the things around me. I’m just the clean up crew, the one that mops up, if you will.”

books as I could get my hands on.” After school, Kealoha attended bible study classes where he was once punished by a nun with a ruler, for asking a fellow student,” Who is stronger, Jesus or Superman?” Later, at his first confessional, the voice behind the screen asked how many times Kealoha had sinned? Confused by the question, and under pressure, he blurted out the first number he could think of: “52” (the number of playing cards in a deck). The priest, without hesitating, accepted the number and assigned 52 Hail Mary’s to the young boy. The ever-thoughtful Kealoha pondered the subtleties between lying and confessing, as well as other unanswered questions like: “If the story of Jesus is true, wouldn’t that make him the first zombie?” Kealoha was just too curious for bible study. Kealoha loved TV as much as the movies and remembers that the shows used to be broadcast a week late in Hawaii. “We watched Perry Como’s Christmas special on New Years.” He also recalls watching the Brady Bunch and wishing that his own life were more like the ideal one that he imagined mainland

those pretty pictures of whales and upcountry scenes, just to eke out their measly millions.” Kealoha faces difficulties with a shrug and a sarcastic sense of humor. As time went on, the basics of life took over, working two jobs to support his family, art faded into the background. Then in 1997 everything changed, he was involved in a serious traffic accident. Doctors, operations and constant pain became his new reality. Bedridden, he turned to art, his way of coping with the boredom and seriousness of his situation. The onslaught of imagery bombarding his consciousness was begging to take form. Art again became an obsession. Everyday he produced new small-scale drawings regardless of his physical limitations and pain. At first glance, Kealoha’s art does have a degree of shock value, but within a few seconds, one begins to see their depth and truth. Such a vivid examination of life is a rare “commodity” in art, especially here in Hawaii, where the arts are dependent on tradition, tourism and the idealization of island life. Kealoha on the other hand cannot turn a blind

His deep concern for our human predicament is reflected in his art like a dark and twisted funhouse mirror, or a psychic autopsy of modern hyper-culture. Kealoha was born on Oahu in 1960, and moved to Maui with his family at age six. His mother knew right away that her son was “different.” His intelligence, sensitivity and artistic inclination were apparent from the beginning. She gave Daniel a lot of room do his own thing. Although he participated in sports and childhood activities, he did not fit in easily at school. He was more likely to be found buried deep in a book or accompanying his mother to her job at the Iao Theatre, instead of playing with other kids his age. In fact, he showed so much interest in movies that the theatre hired him to run the duel 35mm projectors most nights of the week; the perfect job for a boy of 12 in love with horror movies and monster magazines. Known to cut class “as often as possible and still pass” Kealoha disliked school, he did enjoy history and social studies, yet failed art, for not following the rules. “As far back as I can remember, I have always had a passion for art. My art training took place at the Kahului and Wailuku Public Libraries. I would borrow as many art

families were living. Early on, the young Kealoha became aware of the contradictions between local style living and the influx of media and people coming from the mainland. As he grew into his teens, it was rock’n’roll, not ukulele that captured his interest. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, monster movies, model car kits, and art, were Kealoha’s favorite things. In his twenties, art was his main focus. Kealoha worked figuratively at first, then moved into abstraction, having been influenced by artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Although exhibiting at 8 Art Maui juried shows over the years, Kealoha still didn’t quite fit in, people didn’t always understand his work or his motives. “As a local person living on Maui all these years, it has been, to say the least, extremely difficult getting accepted within the Maui art scene. But, on the other hand, it’s given me a freedom that other Maui artists could never dream of having. I pity those poor souls, forced to paint

Today at 42, his wry smile still intact, Kealoha lumbers along with the aid of a cane; he still wrestles with the pain and numbness that the doctors tell him is permanent. But, the imagery hasn’t stopped flowing, and he is more dedicated than ever to his art. Pain juxtaposed with a sense of humor, fuels the cacophony of his random visions, which ultimately reflect life’s pleasures and hypocrisies. Quoting Salvador Dali, Daniel says, “The only difference between a madman and myself is that I am not mad,” And then Francis Bacon (one of his favorite painter’s), who said, “My work either belongs in the National Gallery or in the trash.” To see the work of Daniel Kealoha in person, call 808-242-6843 for an appointment between November 15th - 19th, or visit www.wild-banana.com

KHM: GAME (Number 6 Records, www.sandboxautomatic.com) Game finds the prolific Kool Keith and company churning out yet another release. Featuring a lackluster collaboration with Tricky and uninspired beats and bland delivery, you would definitely be excused if you decided to pass over this release. Take out your Dr. Octagon and Sex Style records and remember the good old days instead of wasting your time with Game. [Tang Li Wheebs] Kool Keith and Jacky Jasper have some truly creative lyrics, but I don't care for the beats. Overall, the album is too normal and repetitive. [The Mole]

TOOLSHED: SCHEMATA (independent, www.truehiphop.com) Canada has spawned a huge amount of creative and gifted post-hip hop artists in the past 5-10 years. With Schemata, the follow-up to their debut album from 1999, Toolshed shows why they have remained amongst the most widely lauded of Canada's new hip hop wave. With the majority of the sounds being instrumentation, as opposed to samples, the album has a lively, organic feel to it. With precise rhymes dealing with a variety of conscious-minded subject matter, and the always captivating Thesis Sahib and Selfhelp contributing guest vocals, Schemata is a very enjoyable listen. [The Mole] Okay in the background, but I can't picture this ending up in my CD player again anytime soon. [Tang Li Wheebs]

LOW: TRUST (Kranky, www.brainwashed.com/kranky) Trust, the 7th studio album from Low finds them mining mostly familiar territory, but still remaining interesting. Nothing real new, but this album is a strong contender for the title of their best work to date. Lyrically and sonically engaging, it conjures their special melancholy mood quite nicely. I would like to be able to say it is fun, but I guess that's not what one comes to expect from one of their releases. Trust is a wonderful place to start or continue exploring the slowcore world of Low. [Tang Li Wheebs] Eh . . . I don't like it. Too slow. [The Mole]

THE WORLD / INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY: JUST THE BEST PARTY (Gern Blandsten Records, www.gernblandsten.com) Just The Best Party finds the World Inferno Friendship Society on their third CD release and coming into their own as album artists. Mixing punk, spy, klezmer, ska, gospel, theatrics, and crazy hi-jinks this New Jersey nine-piece is a hard group to nail down and categorize. Not quite as catchy as most of their East Coast Super Punk Hits Of Today 7" collection, but much more fun and creative than any band around now days that claims to be "punk". Ask the talking cat if you don't believe me. [Tang Li Wheebs] Very cool album. Great for morning showers, I'd say. [The Mole]

EPIC: OLD, GIFTED & WHITE (Clotheshorse Records, www.clotheshorse.com) Epic is one of the most hated MC's in the world of hip hop due entirely to his extremely unorthox style of delivery. Like the album title suggests, he sounds old and white, like if my dad tried to rap with a Canadian accent. But for some reason, I really like it. If you can stomach Epic's voice, you'll hear some pretty interesting lyrics over very nicely produced music. On this limited edition CD-R release, an unofficial follow-up to last year's 8:30 In Newfoundland, Epic shares the spotlight with an assortment of fellow Canadian MC's, producers and DJ's. Although the album was just something thrown together for Epic to sell while on tour, it still provides a good listen. [The Mole] I'm not completely sure about this one, but the accent is a bit fun and the beats are ok, even the one with the Metallica sample. Kind of cute.[Tang Li Wheebs]

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Among issues in the months-long labormanagement strife at the Taronga Zoo (Sydney, Australia): Workers have resisted managers' alleged solution for getting Kibabu the gorilla to mate (following his rejection of all females for six years now), which was to have the keepers sedate him, stimulate him manually, and collect his sperm in a container (but that, said one keeper, would be "too bloody dangerous. What if he woke up?"). It now appears that zoo officials are resigned to use technology instead, by a process called electroejaculation. Earlier, workers had announced a partial strike for a 3 percent pay increase, in that they would stop picking up animals' droppings (whereupon management began docking their pay of the "poo allowance" of the equivalent of US $2.40 an hour. On Nov. 2, skydiver Ron Sirull (1,000 career jumps) performed at the Air and Space Show at Vandenberg Air Force Base (just north of Lompoc, Calif.), accompanied by his Dachshund, Brutus the Skydiving Dog (100 career jumps), to the protests of animal-rights activists but (according to Sirull) to the delight of Brutus, who was "totally turned on." (Brutus doesn't jump alone; he wears goggles and rides in Sirull's jumpsuit. According to Sirull, Brutus' vet and the Arizona Humane Society say the jumps are safe.)

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Ronnie Dale Jones, 33, was arrested in Brevard, N.C., in September after he, for some reason, drove into a parking lot and past several police officers standing by their cars, talking; Jones apparently had momentarily forgotten he had a very large marijuana plant in his back seat. And a 22year-old man was detained by a sheriff's deputy in Gainesville, Fla., in October after he had been stopped routinely for an expired tag; as the men were conversing casually, the deputy noticed a rolled-up marijuana joint behind the man's ear (to which the motorist said, "Man, I forgot that was back there").

PEOPLE LOWER THAN A SNAKE'S BELLY In August, Brian Lynch of Scotchtown, N.Y., was convicted of stealing $8,000 in donations intended for a Sept. 11 FDNY widow. Also in August, Vernon Coleman, 32 (of Philadelphia), and Dane Coleman, 28 (of Upper Darby, Pa.) (who are not related), were arraigned on charges of stealing $35,000 from a donation fund for Afghan children displaced by the war. Also in August, New York City landlord Denise M. Lyman announced she would not allow the family of Sept. 11 victim Danielle Kousoulis into Danielle's old apartment to secure DNA to help detect her remains because Danielle had breached her Sept. 1, 2001, lease by failing to give three months' notice before "abandoning" the apartment.

CHUTZPAH! According to a September New York Times report, New York City homeless-shelter workers believe that "50 to 75 percent" of the current population of 8,000 families (2,000 more than the year before) are "unreasonably picky" about moving into permanent assisted housing, thus remaining in temporary apartments at an average cost to the city of $2,800 per family per month. Sara Kelly, a mother of six and eight-year assisted-housing client, said she could not accept a three-bedroom apartment because "you had to walk through one bedroom to get to another bedroom to get to a bathroom (and) I can't live like that. (I am) choosy about where I live." In White River Junction, Vt., in October, Stewart Fuller, 41, was charged with looting about $30,000 worth of goods from the house of neighbors Roger and Shirley Labelle (who were away) and holding a three-day yard sale nearby so that when the Labelles returned, they couldn't help but notice that some of their neighbors had their stuff. Earlier this year, 89 wives, daughters and lovers of wealthy or powerful Mexican men posed chicly in extravagant settings with complete lack of inhibition about their opulence, for photographer Daniela Rossell's coffeetable book, "Ricas y Famosas" ("Rich and Famous"), thus appearing to taunt the 53 percent of Mexicans who live in poverty. Rossell, who comes from the upper class herself, and is thought to have made the book in part because of conflicted views of her upbringing, has since received threats from the embarrassed wealthy, who apparently miscalculated how their pictures would be perceived.

Maui OnStage Season Begins at the historic Iao Theater Maui OnStage returns this season with an exciting selection of dramatic performances, starting with the longest running musical in the world, “The Fantasticks”, which will run November 15th through December 8th. In “The Fantasticks”, directed by John Langs, young lovers explore a symphony of human experience, with interfering parents, a poetic rouge and cast of comically unusual characters. The young couple part company to see the real world and find their fortunes, returning as “grownups.” You’ll learn the origins of the saying “fences make good neighbors” as well as the context for songs that you may know by heart. John Langs has been acting as Artistic Director since September, and was the director of last season’s smash hit “Chicago”. He has been instrumental in helping to recruit and train crew and artists, as well as creating artistic programs for Maui OnStage. John’s energy, enthusiasm and broad base of training and skills is the life blood of MOS’s growing artistic endeavors. He shares MOS’s vision that the theatre must grow and change with the community, respecting talent on all levels, and facilitating the Iao as a venue for artistic expression. Maui OnStage is pleased to welcome David Johnston as guest director of “Tartuffe Born Again”, their second production of the season, which runs February 21st through March 9th of 2003. This revamped comedy was translated by Freyda Thomas from Moliere’s original in French. The uproarious events of the play center on religious hypocrisy, greed and lust. While following the structure and form of Moliere’s play, Thomas has added a familiar southern twang to the witty and

quick dialogue, transporting characters to a television studio in contemporary Baton Rouge. Tartuffe plays a deposed televangelist who rooks a family of their money and property, and nearly their morality. “This Is Our Youth” will appear on stage May 9th through the 25th, and will feature returning guest director from New York, Dan Fields. In this witty, touching play, writer Kenneth Lonergan exposes youth of the affluent 80’s, and teenagers Dennis, Warren and Jessica think they’re all wised up. They’ve stolen $15,000 in used bills, have hazy knowledge of drug deals and a taste for Dom Perignon - and now they have one night to blow it. Maui OnStage ends their season with the stunningly vibrant musical “Sweet Charity”, with sultry music like “Hey Big Spender” and “Rhythm of Life” woven passionately throughout. Adapted from “Nights of Cabiria”, a film by Federico Fellini, “Sweet Charity” tells the story of an optimistic young woman, Charity, who not only wears her heart on her sleeve, she’s had it tattooed to her arm! Charity finds herself dumped by the married man on whom she had pinned all her hopes and dreams, and she vows never again to be taken advantage of by a man. Charity finds herself involved again, soon to be jilted and alone. As fate would have it, she finds herself trapped in an elevator with a claustrophobic tax accountant who sweets Charity off her feet. This man actually wants to marry her - but will he still feel the same way when he finds out... Other exciting changes are in the works for Maui OnStage in addition to an exciting season of dramatic and musical theatre. John Langs has been working with MOS Executive Director Darla Palmer to collaborate with other artists and arts organizations, and assisting Ms. Palmer in the business restructuring of Maui OnStage. On the administrative end, MOS has added

10 new dedicated members to the board of directors to diligently improve the company’s financial position, and is working in cooperation with the County of Maui to implement structural improvements on the 74-year-old Iao Theater. A “Friends of the Iao Theater” is in the beginning stages of forming, welcoming skilled hands and dedicated support volunteers, and has already taken on other capital improvement projects such as remodeling the actors’ dressing rooms, revamping the theatrical lighting system and building a scene shop work bench. Providing an ongoing schedule of performing arts in a facility as large (and as old) as the Iao Theatre is expensive. “We each need to consider what dramatic arts means to our community and our society,” states MOS Executive Director Darla Palmer. “Our cost to produce a live stage play ranges from $16,000 to $70,000, which does not include our education program, community events, staffing or overhead in our antiquated facility. We are please to welcome new community sponsors Maui

Time Weekly, KAOI Radio Group, Ramon’s Restaurant and Spectracolor Printing and Imaging, and look forward to sharing our plans for the Iao with other supporters.” Palmer enthused that the efforts and expense are worth it when the result is an excellent venue for all types of creative expression. Maui OnStage estimates that with community support, over 20,000 people will enjoy quality theatre that is produced by local artists and technicians, educational and professional opportunities will be created for more than 120 people, and another 7,500 citizens will be served by making the Iao Theater available for affordable community use this year. For show information, call 242-6969. For facility rental info, or to make a tax deductible donation for Maui OnStage’s nonprofit organization dedicated to perpetuating performing arts in our community, call 244-8680. Theatre on the Isle is sponsored in part by the County of Maui, the State Foundation on Culture in the Arts and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Vans Triple Crown Honolulu, Hawaii - The return of the $120,000 Women's Vans Triple Crown of Surfing this winter in Hawaii will be highly celebrated as an integral part of the overall 20th Anniversary festivities. After its absence in 2001, the women's Triple Crown has drawn the world's top women surfers to Hawaii this winter for a tripleheader of events. Roxy kicked-off the festivities on Sunday, November 10, with a special celebrity booth featuring Roxy teamriders and Roxy Pro competitors at the Vans Surf Fest Music & Lifestyle Event at Kualoa. The first day of surfing competition for the $30,000 Roxy Pro officially began Tuesday, November 12, at Haleiwa's Ali'i Beach Park. However small waves in the head-high range led officials and competitors to opt for a lay day for the Vans Hawaiian Pro and Roxy Pro women's events at Haleiwa. The dates for these two events are November 12 to 23, with a total of four days required to run both competitions to completion. Surf forecasters predict a rise in swell starting tomorrow and rising throughout the day and into Thursday. Wave face heights are forecast to reach 12-15 feet and could well see the first day of competition get underway at Haleiwa's Ali'i Beach Park at 8a.m. tomorrow morning. The $100,000 Vans Hawaiian Pro is the final event on the ASP men's World Qualifying Series calendar for 2002, and with its 6-star rating is a critical event for those surfers looking to qualify for next year's elite World Championship Tour

In addition to the Vans Hawaiian Pro and Roxy Pro, the $10,000 Davidoff Cool Water Xpression Session is an added feature this year, open to a select field of invited surfers who will attempt to pull off the most radical and futuristic surfing maneuvers to win cash prizes. recent upgrade at the world class resort, the world's top women surfers will enjoy the luxury of surfing at the various beaches of the resort. The favored surf break for the competition is that known by locals as "The Pool Bar" - a right-hander that lies a stone throw away from the oceanside pool bar. As the final World Qualifying Series event on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, the Turtle Bay Resort Women's Pro is a critical event for those women looking to solidify their place on the elite World Championship Tour for 2003. The third and final event of the women's Vans Triple Crown series is the only competition staged outside of Oahu: the Billabong Pro Maui. As the final destination on the 2002 Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour, the Billabong Pro Maui will crown the women's world champion. Presently, Australia's four-time world champion Layne Beachley leads the ratings. Held during the same dates as the Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters (December 820), Billabong hopes their event runs to completion early on in the holding period, after which time they plan to return to Oahu to stage The $2,500 Billabong Women's Expression Session at Pipeline. The five women who have been invited to give an exhibition are those whose world class surfing talents were featured in the highly successful "Blue Crush" movie released this year. Hawaiians Keala Kennelly, Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard, as well as four-time world champion Layne Beachley and fellow Australian Kate Skarratt make up the invitee list. This special event will be a 30-45 minute heat that will be showcased between the semis and finals of the men's Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters - the final day of action for the 2002 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Billabong has offered a $500 appearance fee to each participant and the invitees have unanimously decided that all monies will be donated to "Boarding for Breast Cancer" - a non-profit organization.

After eight years of living on Maui and listening to people rave about Roy’s restaurants, I finally went over to Kihei with a group of friends and found out for myself what all the noise was about. It will be well short of eight years before I return. Roy’s Kihei Bar & Grill is spacious and upbeat. Two large glass doors at the entrance give way to an arc of tables arrayed before a bustling, display style kitchen. The view of the parking lot is quickly forgotten as your attention is naturally, and intentionally, drawn towards the sounds and scents of Roy’s cooks hard at work. I like the menu concept with a full spread of Roy’s signature Hawaiian Fusion dishes complemented by Kihei Chef Joey Macadangdang’s personal stylings. The second half of the menu runs through appetizers, salads, and entrees again, all of which are nightly specials utilizing fresh seasonal ingredients. We started with Roy’s Dim Sum Style Canoe for two. It stretched from nearly one corner of our table to the other and was loaded down with Baby Back Pork Ribs, Crispy Lumpia, Crab Potstickers, Shrimp Sticks and Ahi Poke. It took some tough, in-close fighting to get my fair share of the goods, and goods they certainly were. The potstickers warranted an extra order on the side but the Spinach Salad with warm goat cheese and toasted walnuts was just about the best thing I’d ever tasted. It was light, flavorful, and intensely satisfying. The Plum

Glazed Peking Duck Breast with Chinese Black Bean Dragon Syrup completed our spread of appetizers with sweet and succulent style. The menu is honestly jam packed with too many mouth-watering entrees to choose any one with certainty. How about Roy’s Charred Garlic Honey Mustard Beef Short Rib with House-made Poi and Lomi Tomatoes or the Tender Braised Lamb Shank with Pancetta White Bean Ragout, Brunoise Vegetables and Roasted Garlic Jus? Maybe the Japanese style Misoyaki Butterfish with Sizzling Soy Vinaigrette, or Caramelized Sea Scallops with Potato Gratin, Asian Singapore Pepper Sauce and Truffle Drizzle? See what I mean? I’d been craving Crispy Whole Moi for some time so my choice was easily made when I found it among the specials. This moist and flaky white fish was scored in a cross hatch, wok-fried, and nicely presented on a boatsized plate of its own with plenty of side garnishes and a bed of some kind of sweet ginger sauce which got a little lost on the bottom of the plate. It would have served better moistening the top of the fish, which was a touch on the dry side. This didn’t stop me from cleaning my plate, though, with nothing left but bones, fins, and eyeballs. Roy’s Kihei Bar & Grill is located in the Piilani Shopping Center at 303 Piikea Ave. Reservations are recommended as well as upscale casual attire (no tank tops or t-shirts allowed). This is fine dining, after all, and you pay for what you get. I think next time I’ll maximize my dollar and enjoyment by doing pupus at the bar. Roy’s is open nightly from 5:30 to 10:00 P.M. and can be reached at 891-1120.

The Fantasticks Maui OnStage Season Opener at the Iao Theatre Many thoughts go into selecting a live stage play to present at the historic Iao Theater. What is a good production, what's been done here recently, what can be staged well technically, what are audience preferences? Keeping these considerations in mind, Maui OnStage chose to open their season with a proven winner: "The Fantasticks". "The Fantasticks" is the longest running stage play in the world for good reason; it is not only well written, it also employs elements of many genres of classical theatre in an exquisite but simple way. It is a toe tappin' feel good musical, appropriate for all ages. "The Fantasticks" tells the story of young lovers exploring a symphony of human experience, with interfering parents, a poetic rouge and cast of comically unusual characters. The young couple part company to see the real world and find their fortunes, returning as "grownups." You'll learn the origins of the saying "fences make good neighbors" as well as the context for songs that you may know by heart. Maui OnStage is pleased to assemble incredible talent for its production of "The Fantasticks". Jerry Eiting, a well-known figure on the Iao stage, returns as "El Gallo" the mischievous rogue who stages an abduction. Jerry's rich, booming voice fills the theatre with songs such as "Try to Remember". New to the Iao stage but not new to theatre are Tom Summers ("Matt") and Danielle Delaunay ("Luisa"). Tom's highlights have included performing Demetrius in Midsummer Dream at the Will Geer theatre in L.A. He has played in film and TV and also has toured in London and toured 2 years in an international Shakespeare company. Danielle Delaunay was born and raised in the islands. Her career started at the age of 5, when she appeared in the pilot film of Baywatch, and has since performed

in numerous musical theatre productions, modeling and talent contests which resulted in a 2 year record contract with Sony Music in Japan, as a Pop/Rock singer. Julie Frank is welcomed back to the Iao after a long hiatus (warmly remembered for her role in "Nunsense"), playing Matt's mother. Newcomer and Wailuku restaurateur (Ramon's) Curtis Williams makes his stage debut as Luisa's father. Iao regular Jorel (Ed Elkin) once again gives an excellent performance as "Henry", an ancient actor down on his luck. The husband and wife team of Alexis (Mortimer) and John Ziegler (Henry for performances after 12/1), are thrilled to be involved again and working together. Only part of the well-seasoned talent of Keoni Manuel will be seen, as this experienced singer/performer expertly plays "The Mute".

"The Fantasticks" is directed by John Langs, artistic director for Maui OnStage. He has been acting as Artistic Director at Maui OnStage since September, and has worked tirelessly to help recruit and train crew and artists and create artistic programs for Maui OnStage. John Langs has been directing professionally for over ten years. A graduate of the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, John also holds a BFA in directing from North Carolina School of the Arts. Executive Director Darla Palmer joined Maui OnStage in February. Her background includes the start-up and management of Akaku: Maui Community Television, was on the development team of the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium, and worked for NBC, CBS and PBS as a producer/director/art director as well as owning her own production company. THE FANTASTICKS lives on as some of the best theatre that exists. The irony is still alive, the songs classics, and the story meaningful to today. Runs Nov. 15th - Dec. 8th, 2002. A special show is planned for Thursday, December 5th, with an opportunity to meet the cast on stage after the performance. (No performance Friday, Dec. 6th). Patrons are also invited to mingle with the cast on November 15th and December 8th at opening and closing night cast parties at Ramon's Restaurant, just two blocks from the Iao Theater in Wailuku. Tickets are available on the internet at www.mauionstage.com or at "If the Shoe Fits", just a few doors down Market Street from the Iao. Adults $18, Students/Seniors $16, with a discount coupon for Ramon's Restaurant included with each ticket purchase. Maui OnStage is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization supported in part by the County of Maui, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the State Foundation on Culture in the Arts, corporate and private donors, and patrons of the theatre.

PICKS DJ JEREMY HEALY 9:30pm Saturday at Casanova. I am truly amazed at the caliber of DJs Casanova brings to spin in their cozy upcountry nightclub, all with their own brand of “#1 DJ” in something or other. Ah, but this guy was a member of the new wave, color-braided, 80’s duo Haysi Fantaysi (don’t you remember “Shiny Shiny”?!) AND creates the music for fashion runways of Galliano and Dior! Oh yeah, and he’s been voted number one DJ (of course!) by both The Face magazine and Mixmag.

TONY N’ TINA’S WEDDING 6:30pm Monday through Saturday at the Hyatt Regency. As a wedding connoisseur myself, Italian-American weddings are consistently among the loudest, wildest, and most loving events I have ever been to. This popular Off-Broadway show is a chance for you to experience the mayhem yourself, and either choose to participate or be a wedding wallflower. My only gripe is that there isn’t a Tony n’ Tina’s Bachelor/Bachelorette party beforehand, but that’s just me.

OPEN MIC NIGHTS... Thursday at DeanO’s Maui Pizza Cafe, Monday at Life’s A Beach & Moose McGillycuddy’s, and Tuesday at Mulligan’s. Stop antagonizing your girlfriend/boyfriend with your endless noodling on the guitar and just get out your frustrated rock-star performance live and on stage. Or read that egocentric, self-delusional poem out loud in front of an actual audience - maybe someone will finally understand you and sympathize with your tormented artist persona.

...OR STAY AT HOME AND PLAY GRAND THEFT AUTO Um, yeah. I have no guilt in recommending this option because the newest GTA Playstation 2 video game “Vice City” is just so damn cool. Who knew the virtual act of stealing cars could be so much fun?! Therapeutic even, one might say. And you know, a night at home every once in a while won’t kill you. At least, that’s what I’ve heard.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Tour of Force Eminem Brings Working Class Grit To Hollywood ) 8 Mile ( As unlikely as an insightful and riveting film about a poor white Detroit kid succeeding beyond his surroundings through Rap music might be, "8 Mile" is that gloriously gritty movie. Director Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential, "Wonder Boys") brings to life "8-Mile's" social realism like an American Mike Leigh ("All or Nothing"). The fictional script by Scott Silver ("Johns," "Mod Squad") lightly draws on Rap music wild child Eminem's quick journey from Detroit's racial black and white dividing line called "8 Mile" to stupefying success in music's mass marketplace. The story stays small and condensed, focusing in on Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith's ("Eminem"- Marshall Mathers) struggle to make his unique voice heard above the din of rival freestyle rappers in a world where he is already unwelcome. Outstanding performances by the film's ensemble cast of supporting characters gives clarity to the film's scrupulously realized depiction of Detroit's rap-infused environment circa 1995. With an atypical six-week rehearsal period, Hanson even approached "8 Mile" more like a Mike Leigh kind of director responsive to a bond amid his characters which springs from their intuitive subconscious and their immediate environment. Layers of subtlety are present in every second of the movie right down to a sex scene between Rabbit and Alex (Brittany Murphy - "Don't Say A Word") that has audiences yelling at the screen for Rabbit to pull out before he cums inside the girl. It's that level of intimacy that Hanson engages his audience with regardless of their familiarity with rap music or any predisposition they may have to Eminem. Rabbit is a talented but shy rapper liv-

ing in a trailer home with his irresponsible mother (played brilliantly by Kim Basinger) and his young daughter. When he isn't working at a car plant stamping out bumpers, Rabbit scribbles down ideas to use in his raps while listening to a drone of rhythm on headphones forever hanging at the ready around his neck. At the film's start, Rabbit hasn't yet quelled his stage fright and is prone to going mute on the mic in front of large crowds, and it's this internal conflict that sets up the dramatic arc of the movie. Rabbit hangs with a crew of loyal supporters led by Future (Mekhi Phifer - "Paid In Full") who hosts a weekly rap battle at a fluorescent-lit club called "The Shelter." Future would like to be the catalyst that brings Rabbit to the fore of Detroit's Hip-Hop scene, but smooth talking promoter Wink (Eugene Byrd "Sleepers") has Rabbit convinced that he can get him connected to music producers who will record his music. There's no question that the story closely traces experiences Eminem lived through before he put together his own production company to market his music. Eminem's screen presence, as an actor, is at once unexpected and self-fulfilling. Here, we are introduced to the impossibly young performer as a shadow version of himself in the exact environment that he exploded from. It's an altogether more keen experience for the cloudy naturally lit urban atmospheres of Detroit that cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto ("Amores Perros", "Frida") captures. Prieto embraces Detroit's oppressive reality as an American city, like so many other U.S. towns, surviving as a shell of its formerly vibrant identity. And so, there's an unscripted kind of catharsis built into the movie where Detroit comes to life on the big screen in reverence to other parts of the country that the media ignores.

"8 Mile" functions within the larger scope of Eminem's success as a chapter from a book that the audience is already privy to. As such, the film's open-ended ending leaves a huge gap for the many steps that took Eminem from winning a nightclub rap battle contest to selling millions of records. The theme here is about perseverance under harsh conditions. There will be plenty of detractors harping on "8 Mile" as misrepresenting rap and its sanctified message as something that can only truly come from black culture. Personally, I think

Chuck Berry was a far more talented musician than any rapper out there. By the same token, I think Lou Reed's "Street Hassle" album sums up white experience in an urban black culture better than any other poet has ever delivered. But all of that is beside the point. Little people with big dreams are everywhere, trying desperately to find their niche, while keeping their dignity about them. "8 Mile" breathes that particular fire into a cold and hollow space. As any musician knows, music is, above all else, about filling space.

The AIM Program – The Technology of Prayer in Healing In regard to Stephen Lewis, EMC2 and the AIM Program: Everything is energy. Everything and everyone has a frequency. Those frequencies that are out of balance with our natural harmony can be identified and removed. I know this to be true. I have seen the Sanctuary process at work. I practice it daily. My entire family participates in the AIM Program and I have seen wonderful results. This is real, it is transforming, it is true healing, it is a giant step into the inevitable future where each of us is our own personal, transcendental and totally enlightened healer. I have found that in my higher self and so can you. It is available now. – Dr. Wayne Dyer, Author, Lecturer, Spiritual Teacher Now more than ever, spiritual exploration demands that we open to expanded possibilities for understanding and affecting the healing and advancement of all dimensions of our lives – especially in the physical arena. As we more fully understand that the foundation for the physical is the “metaphysical”…that all creation is energy in unique vibration…new vistas emerge. Stephen Lewis, through his AIM program, is a pioneer in this new territory of healing. – Reverend Dr. Roger W. Teel We live at the threshold of a universal recognition that the human being is not mere matter, but a potent energetic field of consciousness. Healing modalities of the past millennium are quickly giving way to breakthrough, cutting edge techniques made available by visionaries such as Stephen Lewis and his AIM Program. – Reverend Dr. Michael Beckwith, Founder Agape International Center of Truth As a member of Sanctuary for many years, the techniques illustrated in this book seem quite normal to me and to the many people I have sent to the real-life Max. – Linda Gray, Actress

PROVIDING THE SACRAMENT OF ENERGETIC BALANCING, A SPIRITUAL TECHNOLOGY, TO ASSIST IN REMOVING ENERGETIC IMBALANCES IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE LIFE FORCE AND CONSCIOUSNESS OF LIVING BEINGS

FREE Lecture/Demonstration with Stephen Lewis co-author of the novel “Sanctuary: The Path to Consciousness”, the novel about the miraculous possibilities that emerge when we see the universe as a matrix of frozen light, the spiritual manifestation of our unitive consciousness.

Everything is energy. Everything is consciousness. Everything is possible.

My fiancé of two years has two kids (ages 3 and 8) and an ex-wife. I have always respected that she, as the kids' mother, is part of our lives, and I've never tried to override her parental authority. Despite that, since she re-married in February, she's seemed bent on making my life a living hell - cussing me out on the phone and falsely accusing me of atrocious behavior. Typically, I calmly, politely tell her why her accusations are baseless, and my fiancé firmly tells her not to call unless it's about the kids. This week, she got him on the phone and started yelling that I was to blame for something that had happened to her - an absolutely absurd accusation. Well, I finally lost it. I got on the phone and yelled that I'd always tried to respect her, and I didn't understand why I couldn't get respect from her in return. She hung up on me. I love my fiancé and his children dearly, but I'm afraid this woman will drive me insane. I'd like to sit down and talk to her, but maybe I should simply ignore her. Or should I just revert to being Little Miss Nice and blow up again in two more years? Ex-Wife In The Back Sitting down with this woman for a little polite conversation over tea and crumpets? That's gonna happen. While you're waiting, why not

BY KOZMIC KEV asks you to let go of control and allow yourself to be happy with what life is presenting you. SCORPIO: Pace yourself for a period of serious work followed by more meaningful relationships. The full moon spotlights romance, harmony and diplomacy. By the end of the week Venus will release her icy retrograde grip and love will move forward. SAGITTARIUS: There's been too much gloom and doom lately. I think you're in the market for a little comic relief. So tell us a joke to break our defenses. The full moon highlights charitable causes, service work and government employment. CAPRICORN: This is the grand finale of Capricorns social hunting season. Freedom is a gift not to be taken lightly. You're probably plotting out how to make the world a better place. The full moon offers a glimpse of your many creative abilities. AQUARIUS: You're on your way to career success. Manifestations lead to friendships and neighborhood recognition. Other people’s privacy has to be respected. The full moon gives you to an awareness of family needs, and matters close to home. PISCES: Life continues to be sweet. Exciting situations will spontaneously come up from out of nowhere. Your intuition comes in handy during a tight squeeze. The full moon gives you a down home sense of grace and place. Share the joy of your experience. sets in Maui the moon will go into Aries. The positive vibe is very strong through Saturday. Keeping your inner peace while dealing with other people’s drama. The full moon brings financial success. TAURUS: Sunday through Tuesday the moon will be in Taurus peaking in fullness Tuesday at 3:34 pm. The sensual and the creative intermingle. Do what you can to sustain balance. When times are tough you can call on your friends for a sympathetic ear. GEMINI: Beginning with Thursday night a sense of celebration takes over. You're enjoying a new found freedom. Other than that you feel over worked. The full moon opens up your psyche to the point that you wake up from your sleep knowing your dream. CANCER: A super good time will be hard to avoid. No matter how hard you try not to be creative or open hearted you fail miserably. The full moon frees you up at first. Your next stop is your imagination meeting your spiritual purpose. LEO: Keeping up with the "roots" of things is your number one task. Your memory needs to serve you well. Don't live in the past, learn from it. The full moon gives you a chance to be the beautifier as you work and display your many gifts. VIRGO: Perpetual motion is your friend. It's a time to be active and on the move. You might spend a lazy day cleaning up your favorite beach or swimming hole. You might bake a pie for a close friend or neighbor. Poetry flows with the moon as you put praise in each phrase. Libra: Arrange the gifts you possess in order of that which is most dear to you. Find a spiritual reason for having these materials. The full moon

pore over Britney Spears lyrics in search of hidden symbolism? This should leave you ample time to weigh the benefits of taking diplomacy lessons from Courtney Love over doing graduate work in etiquette with Anna Nicole Smith. But...but...all you're looking for is a little "respect in return." Here's a woman whose telephone calls generally come in three volumes: "shrill," "ear-splitting," and "learn sign language." She gives you no reason to believe she can even fake calm, cool, sane, and rational. Yet, every time she calls, you're shocked when she accuses you of selling her favorite toothbrush to aliens, or blames you for global warming, the economy, and the holes in her Swiss cheese. What happened to make her this way? Wait you don't remember replacing all those passages in her Farmer's Almanac with secret messages from Satan? Of course, it seems more likely that, post-remarriage, she decided you got the better deal, and she's doing her part to see that you don't get to keep it. Chances are, she figured out her brilliant strategy all by her shrewish self...although you can't entirely dismiss the possibility that Christina Aguilera transmitted it to her by radio wave off one of her latest piercings.
