LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR AGENTS STRIKE BACK

THE MAUI OSTRICH

There is nothing wrong with all activity agents. If your restaurant gives 50% off for agents, they must like our business. It possibly may be your service that gets you no tips! We make our choice to eat in your establishment because the food is obviously good. As for calling us a mutant breed, I make $2000 a week and tip 25% on any meal regardless of the service, because everyone on the island needs to make money. If you don’t want our business, you may be eating Top Ramen noodles and drinking generic light beer. Are you angry because we make more [money] than you? I hope your boss finds out how much business you’ll lose from your attitude. By the way, we know who gives us 50% off, and we don’t want it anymore! Also, you know where we work – come tell us to our face about who doesn’t tip! – ‘cause it’s not all of us. Please next time direct your letter to the person or persons who don’t tip you! Not all of us “mutant breeders” and “slimeballs” don’t tip! Must be your service! Thank you very much for keeping your comments to yourself – or bring them to my booth. Jay, Lahaina

After reading my new Representative Brian Blundell's comments regarding the Lahaina Bypass, and then a Maui News editorial opposing impact fees for road construction, I am praying for some clarity. First, the bottom-of-the-pile placing by the State of Hawaii for the bypass funding has been an issue championed by West Maui candidates since the 80's, with no success. Second, the Maui News dutifully reports fatalities (and endless closures) on the Honoapiilani Highway; the current traffic exceeds Federal--and everyones--standards for a 2-lane road. Regularly, new crosses appear along the deadly drive, bearing witness to the carnage. Try to imagine all the victim's pictures below this letter...you probably know some. Yet, in the 11/14/02 Lahaina News, immediately after the election, Brian Blundell (whom I supported) backpeddled on supporting the bypass with the excuse, "I will attempt to poll the West Maui Community to find out where everyone stands on this issue". Please, Brian, say it ain't so! Next, the Sunday Maui News cites Maui becoming a "car-cluttered, paved over version of a mainland city" in a blatant ostrich syndrome rationale to oppose road construction, which in the case of the Honoapiilani Hwy. would not only reduce fatalities, but could also offer Maui an internationally renowned

oceanfront park from the Pali to Puamana. Developer impact fees aside, how many deaths will it take to improve the road? Hiding one's head in the sand to avoid this critical situation won't help our kids, friends, and visitors after they're dead, or in the hospital. Please Brian, other elected officials, and folks at the Maui News--all whom have such great influence--we need your Kokua. Make our roads safe! Barry Brown, Mahinahina

TIP YOUR CREW! I loved your article on tipping in your last issue. I would like to add something. I also work in the tourist industry, but as crew on a snorkel boat. For some reason, even though our captain clearly and loudly announces the presence of the tip jar, some people walk off the boat without leaving anything. Or they throw in $2.00 for a 4 person crew to split. In addition to serving as waiters/waitresses at sea for breakfast and lunch, we teach them how to snorkel, rub suntan lotion on their bodies, play with their children so they can snorkel in peace, lead them on a guided tour of the reef, and save their lives when they swim a half mile from the boat, swallow a gallon of sea water and can't make it back. I won't even go into detail about dealing with seasickness or cleaning heads. Once these passengers are off the boat we clean their sunscreen smears from the win-

dows, scrub the potato chips and chocolate from the decks and pick up their soaking wet, scattered towels to launder. Some people appreciate the hard work we do and are gnerous. Others are clueless. They will tip 15-20% for a meal that costs twice as much as our entire 5 hour trip but they consider us mere servants. They should know that 15-20% of their fare would be appropriate for our four crew members to share after an 8 hour day. Our wages are not very high. Drop a $20.00 in the tip jar....at least. Marie DeJournette via Email

TIPPING ON DISCOUNT The story on tipping was great but I still think there needs to be clarification on one tipping issue. What about tipping when the bill has been discounted? I always thought it was customary to tip on the amount of the full bill, or what you would have paid before the discount. Since your server is still providing the service on those items of the bill that have been discounted they should still be compensated by tip for these. Despite the fact there was no clarification on this tipping topic, thank you for taking the time to clear up some tipping issues. It was fun to read, and useful as well. I had no idea that your server could end up paying to bring you your meal if you didn’t tip them! Maile Cordoza, Kihei

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

JACK-ASS THE MOVIE – A NEW BREED OF POPULATION CONTROL Anybody who’s ever taken high school biology or watched the Discovery channel knows about Mother Nature’s brand of population control. Basically, Mother Nature has a system of checks and balances to ensure that the ever-involving organisms on Earth don’t crowd one another. To use one of Her examples, if a herd of deer becomes too large for its surrounding area, it begins to outpace its food supply. At some point, some of the deer will begin to starve and the population will be produced to a number that the food supply can sustain. Who dies? Usually the weak, sick, or old. No, it’s not animal discrimination, it’s just the law of the land. The strongest will survive. Unfortunately, Mother Nature hasn’t been so successful with holding a limit to the human population. In case you’ve never heard of Johnny Knoxville, he’s the guy who runs around on TV annoying the living hell out of people. Hence, the name of his show, JACKASS. Calling JACKASS stupid is an insult to stupidity. Even when you’re laughing out loud you just want to jump through the TV and choke the guy. But how does this correlate to Mother Nature’s efforts at population control? Through imitation stunts, that’s how. A search on Google for JACKASS imitation stunts yielded 470 listings which means there are way too many people out there who like being a jackass. Some were kind of funny like the guys who went into a convenience store and videotaped themselves as the unsuspecting customer who gets tackled by the guy in the football hel-

met. Other ones were not so amusing such as the kid who was videotaped as he jumped over a car going 30-40 mph, only he didn’t jump high enough and remains in the hospital. Or the kid who soaked his shirt in rubbing alcohol and taped steaks to his body. He lit himself on fire to become a human BBQ and turned himself into a two-legged Ruth’s Chris. All stunts were inspired by JACKASS. Who knows why kids repeat what they see on TV? What looks completely asinine to most people looks like a good idea to these kids. Jump off the roof and see who makes the biggest indentation in the ground? Sounds good to these guys. It’s truly amazing, and what it succeeds in doing is creating a separation between the people who are productive members of society and the people who should be put in an institution. People shouldn’t be suing MTV for "moral culpability" (as the attorney for the kid hit by the car is trying to do). Instead, we should be thanking MTV for identifying the jackass’s around us. As of right now, identifying the jackass’s around us is all we get. But eventually, Mother Nature’s true plan will come to light. Entertainment is in a constant state of oneupsmanship. Even JACKASS is a knock-off of the TOM GREEN SHOW. Entertainment has to keep getting grosser, racier, and more vulgar. Eventually, THE FACES OF DEATH will be just another reality TV show. When that happens, the things kids do to imitate what they see on TV will take on a little more meaning. People won’t be satisfied anymore with simple things like broken bones and shattered skulls. No, they’ll have to visit the Reaper before they can be truly "cool" in the eyes of their friends. Then, Mother Nature’s answer to human population control will be revealed and the earth will be on the path to self-regulation.

EH BRAH! Send anonymous thanks, confessions or accusations, 200 words or less, changing or deleting the names of the guilty and innocent to “Eh Brah!” c/o Maui Time Weekly, 658 Front Street, Ste. 126A–7278, Lahaina, HI 96761

To the freaking, gloating, floating, braggadocio, whale-of-a-fat-ass drifting and yapping loudly off Kam 2 the morning after the election who told me to “just eat cake” because I had the nerve to point out some of your greedy ways...I would like to say “you can’t handle the truth.” You know, you and your ilk are guilty of taking far more than you need to the detriment of your fellow man. You were very loudly proclaiming that now the Republicans have more power than they have had in your lifetime, all will be better in your universe. I want Uranus to know that I’m not poor – just always broke, and now the rich will get richer while service people like me continue to struggle to try and make ends meet. No time for family, no chance for real affordable housing. So the kids are alone and thanks to Operation Green Sweep, the kids are alone and smoking crack. Whales eat plankton, you eat caviar, and I eat Spam. What goes around comes around. If 6 were 9 I would not tell you to eat cake, I would serve you some. Aloha is more powerful than money. Before you beleaguered yourself away from me, I wanted to wish all the digested island Spam find its way to the pillow you lay your head on. Proud Survivor on “Cake”

Sobering Lifestyles on Maui

CUTS

The first halfway house on Maui operated out of a two-bedroom home with four recovering alcoholics in Kihei. That was back in 1977 with no community support, no agency partners, no funding. Two years later, the project to help alcoholics and drug addicts get clean and sober moved into a three-bedroom house in Kahului. It still had insufficient funding, but due to word of mouth, it brought in more people to its doorstep. In 1985, with community support and funding, Aloha House, Inc. relocated Upcountry into the old Maunaolu Campus facility. Today, Aloha House, Inc. (AHI) is considered one of Maui’s most successful privately-operated nonprofit organizations, which continues to provide treatment services for alcohol and drug addiction. It has also expanded to include additional mental health and social services for Maui families by establishing outpatient offices in J. Walter Cameron Center in Wailuku, and partnering up with Malama Family Recovery Center. In celebration of AHI’s 25th anniversary, the public is invited to a dinner/silent auction fundraiser held on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 5:30 – 9 p.m. at Dunes Restaurant in The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course, Kahului.

Aloha House Turns 25

One of AHI’s founding fathers is Joe Pana, 68, a beacon of aloha who was a recovering alcoholic back then. Presently, he is employed as the Senior Resident Advisor at Hawaii Job Corp, working with youths and young adults. He’s been with the Job Corp for the past 16 years. “Every time I got drunk, I had to go to Oahu for treatment at the halfway house in Sand Island. There was nowhere to go here,” recalls Pana in a telephone interview from his home in Makawao. His drinking began after his wife, at age 34, passed away. It took him eight years to recover. “The last day I took a drink was the day my wife’s sister and her family came over to make reservations for me to go to Sand Island for the fourth time. They were so concerned about my suicidal behavior, and that’s when I realized their incredible love for me. It was their aloha that made me stop.” Pana began brainstorming about creating a halfway house on Maui, and got together with a graduate of AA named Tom Walters “to formulate the project.” Pana remembers “not being able to pay rent, not having enough funds to survive, and finally getting evicted.” One of the most depressing experiences during that time was going from house to house on Thanksgiving Day asking for food for his

group. “I got a few doors slammed in my face,” he says with a laugh. Returning empty handed, he was shocked to find on his doorstep a big platter with a large, fully-cooked turkey. “It had all the trimmings, stuffing, gravy, yams, and pumpkin pie to boot!” The blessings were wrapped and tied with a ribbon and no clue from where they came. Till this day Pana still doesn’t know whom to thank for that gift which made Thanksgiving 1977 one of the highlights of his life. Two years later, Pana moved headquarters to his home in Kahului. He says that “the house that used to be a bar for friends, had now become a dry house for them to sober up.” His neighbors were surprised and supportive of his new and improved lifestyle. After two-and-ahalf years, however, quarters in the three-bedroom home became a little too tight, and it could not accommodate the flow of newcomers into the program. Some of AHI’s supporters back then were representatives of Hina Mauka, an established recovery treatment center on Oahu. Hina Mauka’s representatives would fly over to testify and seek support on Pana’s behalf at the County of Maui. Other supporters included the late Mayor Hannibal Tavares, who was instrumental in acquiring the present Upcountry location of AHI. The baton over the years was handed over to many caring and concerned citizens, including Dr. S. Larry Schlesinger, who was honored as Physician of the Year by the Hawai`i Medical Association in 2000. The noted plastic surgeon who commutes back and forth to his offices on Maui and Oahu began his career in 1980. Three years later he realized that he was addicted to prescription tranquilizers and alcohol. He began his recovery in a facility in La Joya, California. Dr. Schlesinger’s treatment was successful and two years later, he volunteered his services at AHI as its Board President from 1985-88. The late pediatrician Dr. Marion Hanlon was Chairman of the Board of Directors at that time. In 1985, with the help of Board members and friends, Dr. Schlesinger recalls painting two buildings and putting up new screens on the windows. They were proud to offer a facility with a full kitchen, and bedrooms enough to house 15 to 20 clients, all on a $210,000 shoestring annual budget. One of his fondest memories also happened around Thanksgiving. “Every year, while I was still president, a lady from Haiku invited the residents of Aloha House to her big estate. It was such a generous act on her part to open up her home to them. As a surgeon, I was assigned the job of cutting the turkey, and I felt honored because no one has ever asked me to carve a turkey before.”

ALOHA HOUSE TODAY Over the decades the agency has evolved and

Joe Pana-one of AHI’s founding fathers matured into a fully-accredited, State-licensed treatment facility. It now operates on an estimated $4 million annual budget, according to Jud Cunningham, AHI’s Chief Executive Officer since 1995. This budget allows Aloha House to offer a full range of residential and outpatient services through one facility. For example, a client can detoxify in the Interim Care & Stabilizing Program (ICSP), then do residential treatment, and from there go on to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), then continue maintenance through the After Care and Transitional Housing Programs. It also has its own in-house psychiatrist and offers mental health services and programs staffed by a highly skilled mix of professionals and paraprofessionals. “All of this combined makes Aloha House unique in that it is the only agency on Maui that provides the whole continuum of care,” adds Cunningham. At present, the total amount of staff members, including Malama Recovery Family Center, is estimated at 85 full-time employees working in various programs. There are an additional 20-plus independent contractors, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other mental health professionals. “All are dedicated, hard workers committed to assisting those in need of recovery and seeing them succeed,” says Cunningham. “We’re also thankful for all of those in the past and

present who contributed either through their volunteer work or through monetary donations in helping Aloha House thrive throughout the years." It is indeed a time for thanks and appreciation to all who have taken care of Maui’s first halfway house. It has come a long way since “Uncle Joe” Pana, a beacon of aloha, helped get it started 25 years ago and appropriately gave it its namesake.

Aloha House celebrates its 25th year anniversary on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 5:30 – 9 p.m. at Dunes Restaurant in The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course, Kahului. The public is invited to attend the dinner fundraiser and participate in a silent auction. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. featuring the smooth guitar stylings of Paul Petersen. The silent auction includes a variety of gift items perfect for holiday gift giving. Awardwinning Executive Chef Dan Saito presents an open buffet, from 6 to 8 p.m., offering local-flavored buffet for the local palette and a selection of special holiday desserts. Aloha House will also honor its employee of the year, and recognize its board members. Cost for the dinner is $25 per person. Aloha House will be accepting RSVPs through Nov. 27. dance, the maile lei’s and aloha shirts, there are no suits and ties here. As the bridesmaids line up and the maid of honor, Connie Mocogni, played by Jamie Kay Rawlinson, comes out with a big hapai (pregnant) belly, the tone is set for the evening to come. In the middle of the beautiful and romantic ceremony of vows, Connie runs off to use the bathroom. Meantime, the father of the groom, Anthony Angelo Nunzio, played by Paul Corti, can’t keep his comments to himself and narrates the procession for us all with his quirky comments. As the torches are lit and the final kiss ends the ceremony, the guests are directed towards the reception where the real fun begins. You can just imagine what could happen when a 20-something party girl gets hitched to a hunky loud-mouthed macho Italian, but Tony & Tina perform it so real you feel more like you are at their wedding then among a performance. The reception party entertainment is provided by Donny Dulce & Fusion, a 4piece band comprised of Donny Dulce, the beloved wedding singer played by Tony Torres, with Leilani Lee on keyboards (Vania Jerome), and Carlo Cannoli on guitar (Joseph Martinson), and Rocco Caruso on Drums (Peter Della Croce). These musicians belt out all the wedding favorites on command in what

has got to be one of the funnest and more difficult parts to play in this show. The evening is kicked off by a dance with the father of the Groom and his saucy young girlfriend, Madeline Monroe, played by Alison Leigh Mills, who is all skin at the show. Their erotic dance gets the blood going and you will soon find yourself whisked out to the dance floor by the enthusiastic comings of Joseph Vitale, the brother of the bride played by Joseph Alexander Morales, or Marina Gulino, a bridesmaid played by Vera Pagan, or many of the other parties on the guest list. As the wedding party is annouced and seated you meet the Blacks, Vinnie and Loretta (Brian Patrick Connolly & Linda Stephens) the caterers with a remote relation to Anthony Nunzio, who orchestrates the movement to the buffet lines. Vinnie breaks the ice with some jokes and then eating commences. You are treated to some typical Italian wedding fare, with ceasar salad, foccacia, pasta salad with veggies, fish, and meat lasagna. During dinner drama abounds as the cast roams around making conversation with their guests and certain tribulations present themselves. You will be in stitches as Tina and her bridal party perform a dance number to an ‘N Sync tune, and tensions build as Tina gets more loaded and out of control throughout the

evening. Everyone gets a glass of champagne to toast the wedding party led by Vinnie Black. Tina’s uninvited ex-boyfriend adds to the humor as he inevitably crashes the party and insists on a drunken toast to her, however her macho groom and father-in-law see to it that his spotlight is cut short. The continual banter between the new in-laws is hilarious and believable, and gripes and arguments complete with skirmishes embellish the evening’s entertainment. The bride’s mother Josephine Vitale, played by Carmen Gardner, portrays the classic doting, religious, big-haired, polar equal to John Corti’s Anthony Nunzio. While the actors and actresses pull from their life experiences to contribute to the show, in a setting called “environmental theatre,” the amazing thing is so can you. While these professionals are able to keep their show in control, you can try as you may to participate, interfere, play along, or watch. Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding offers their guests the ultimate experience in dinner theatre, and you will never know the outcome unless you call 808 667-4727 and get yourself invited. Maui audiences are used to most shows getting the litmus test on Oahu audiences first, but here at the Hyatt Regency we are offered the unique opportunity to make the sweet success all ours.

onderful things happen at weddings. A union is born in a ceremony among family and friends and then a celebration of matrimony follows. Not one wedding is identical, and no wedding comes off without a hitch. Fifteen years ago, Nancy Cassaro dreamed this sanctimonious scenario would make an excellent backdrop for a performance, a dream that would turn into a grand theatrical success. Her brilliant conception and performance resulted in Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding, the longest running Off Broadway act in history. An act that has gone on the road and set up wedding bells in more than 40 cities including Chicago, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and now Lahaina. Snatched up by the Hyatt Regency Maui, Tony & Tina opened November 1st to Hawaii audiences. The producers, Jeff Gitlin and Raphael Berko resolved to keep the cast 100% Maui talent and were 90% successful. Only 2 members of the cast are from Oahu, and 1 is from the mainland. While casting for the show only began 1 month before the opening, the real cram session was in the rehearsal. Cast members had only 9 days of rehearsal prior to the show, of which only the weekend lent itself to two full 8 hour days. The show’s original New York director, Larry Pellegrini, is directing and supervising the Maui version of the act and created a top notch environment for the actors and actresses. Nancy Cassaro, the show’s original creator came in to help the cast and consult with the production to ensure its success. Jeff Gitlin and Raphael Berko come to Maui after producing the Las Vegas show to rave reviews and sold out shows. Weddings are a no-brainer for comedy and the producers and director are quick to hit on that nerve. The show deposits the audience right in the middle of the comic chaos of two “New York-Italian” families, the Nunzios and Vitales. The language of weddings is universal and the New York-Italians can be compared to any of the many cultures our community is embodied with. While we may not be entirely up to snuff with the New York-Italian communities, we know what is going on here. We have all been to weddings and the universal nature of the trysts here are all familiar, and being a part of the union of Valentina Lynne Nunzio, the bride played by Elisa Paet, and Anthony Angelo Nunzio, the groom played by Jim Langford is no exception. The unusual quality of this performance is that you are among the “family members” and “hired help” of this wedding posing as a guest. While you schmooze along with the in-laws and caterers, something incredible is going on about you. Because you are never really sure of the actors or guests, the excitement of unpredictability is around you at all times during the show. The ceremony begins in the gorgeous backdrop of the Weeping Banyan Bar at the Hyatt Regency. While you get your photo taken for the wedding party and sip cocktails waiting for the procession to begin, you are accosted by a pushy nun, Sister Albert Maria, (cousin of the bride) played by Erin Griffith, who leads you unwilling and all with a kooky choir song to begin the ceremony. As the brides procession commences, you begin to see the Hawaiian touches to Tony & Tina with the opening hula

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORY Even with a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez is having trouble attracting pancreatic-cancer patients for his Columbia University study (only 25 of 90 slots filled), perhaps because the treatment's most prominent component is twice-a-day coffee enemas. A Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center doctor called the regimen "ludicrous," but Gonzalez said the caffeine stimulates nerves in the bowel, helping the liver with detoxification, according to an October Wired magazine report. His initial pilot program reported significant benefits of the treatment but was regarded with skepticism in that it included only 11 patients.

Sentinel, in an August story on the town's shrinking 1960s-'70s hippie population, interviewed among others (legal names) Mr. Climbing Sun, Mr. Shalom Dreampeace Compost and Mr. (no last name) Chip; other recent residents such as Darting Hummingbird Over a Waterfall, Moonbeam Moonbeam and "XXXXXXXX X" were not available.

GREAT ART! Sculptor-painter Antonio Becerra's government-funded "Oils on Dogs" exhibition opened in Santiago, Chile, in August, consisting of the artist's paintings (e.g., Pope John Paul and a cross, blue and orange butterflies) on the embalmed cadavers of a dozen roadkill dogs Becerra had found on the city's streets. Becerra called the work a reflection of society's violence and cruelty, but animal rights activists were appalled

Jules Vitali has created more than 1,000 pieces of small art in his preferred medium, foam polystyrene (Styrofoam) cups (some with flourishes of acrylics or bronze), according to an October Boston Globe profile. He took up his craft with a carry-out coffee cup and a Craftsman knife 20 years ago, inspired, he said, by boredom. A display of his "Styrogami," with pieces priced at up to $800, is housed at the Freeport (Maine) Public Library.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Chattanooga, Tenn., police told the city's WTVC-TV in October that they had arrested Rudy Raines for possession of about a pound of marijuana, after Raines allegedly walked nonchalantly into a Fast Food and Fuel convenience store, past officer David Ashley, and uninhibitedly placed a stash of marijuana into the store's microwave oven because, he said, he needed to dry it out. Raines was arrested, along with another man sleeping in Raines' car in the parking lot.

MORE FLAMING POP TARTS Deanna Robinson and her insurance company filed a lawsuit in Atlanta in August against Kellogg's, alleging that the poor design of Pop Tarts is the reason one burst into flames in her toaster two years ago, igniting a house fire that did more than $10,000 in damage. Kellogg's has had to defend Pop Tarts' flammability before, in New Jersey and Ohio lawsuits (which it settled) and against newspaper columnist Dave Barry, who wrote of his experience of inducing 30-inch-high flames from Pop Tarts in his own toaster. First Leg for Vans Triple Crown Myles Padaca Ousted; Holly Beck Scores Big

SURF GUIDE 20

(Haleiwa, HAWAII) – On Friday, November 15, Haleiwa offered the best of a stormy batch of North Shore surfing conditions for the opening day of competition of the Vans Hawaiian Pro - the first leg of the 20th Anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. While waves measured up to eight feet faces, relentless rain and squally winds demanded a focused effort from both surfers and officials. Yet compared to other surf spots along the coastline, the quality of waves at Haleiwa was definitely contestable. A total of 17 heats were held today, including five from the second round, and results were mixed throughout. Several well-known surfers and competitive giants were eliminated in the early heats, including former world champion Derek Ho (Hawaii), Dan Malloy (USA), Kurt Nyholm (Australia), Gavin Beschen (USA), Danylo Grillo (Brazil), Eneko Acero (Spain), Ben Bourgeois USA), Heath Walker (Australia), and Mikael Picon (France). On the flipside, Hawaiian Pancho Sullivan opened up his Triple Crown campaign with the highest heat score of the day's competition - 16.6 points out of a total of 20. Surfers top two rides gave their total heat scores. At 29 years of age, Sullivan has long been considered one of the strongest Vans Triple Crown title campaigners. Able to adapt to conditions across the board, and a real heavyweight when it comes to tackling the bigger surf at venues the likes of Sunset Beach, Sullivan's local knowledge is tough to overcome. Myles Padaca advanced through his six-man first round heat in third place behind Jonathan Gonzalez (Canary Island) and Raoni Monteiro (Brazil). In round two, Padaca will again face Gonzalez and Monteiro, along with seeded round two surfer Pat O'Connell (USA). Others to advance from round two included Toby Martin (Australia), Bruce Irons (Hawaii), and Danilo Costa (Brazil). Interestingly, Hawaii's hot up-and-comers Jason Shibata, Joel Centeio and Kekoa Bacalso all advanced to round two, confirming their world class potential. Should today's swell hold in for tomorrow, the first round of the $10,000 Davidoff Cool Water Xpression Session will see 20 of the world's hottest surfers let loose in a display of radical and futuristic surfing maneuvers. Among those invited to compete are Hawaiians Myles Padaca, Bruce and Andy Irons, Taj Burrow (Australia), and European champions Michael Picon and Russell Winter. The first round of the women's Roxy Pro did not start today but is expected to take to the water on the next day of competition. The total holding period for the Vans Hawaiian Pro and Roxy Pro is November 12-23. A total of four days are required to run both events to completion. On Saturday, defending Vans Triple Crown champion Myles Padaca was a shock elimination in round two of the Vans Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa today, placing fourth in his four-man heat behind Jonathan Gonzalez (Canary Islands), Pat O'Connell (USA) and Raoni Monteiro (Brazil). His equal 81st place in this first event of the three-event series means his chances of reclaiming the Triple Crown title are incredibly slim.

Roxy Pro Round 1: (6-woman heats, first 3 advance) H1: M. Pierre Abgrall (Fra), D. Penfold (Aus), C. Sarran (Fra), L. Fisher (Aus),

Surf conditions improved from yesterday, the 6-8 feet swell (waveface height) was more organized which offered longer rides and better scoring potential, yet Padaca never managed to find the better rides. While Gonzalez and O'Connell notched up scores in the six to eight point range (out of a maximum 10), Padaca's highest wave score was a 4.07. On each surfer's top two rides, Padaca finished with a total of 7.57, while advancing surfers Gonzalez and O'Connell posted 15.0 and 13.13 respectively. In other heats, local knowledge toppled highranking talent in more than one heat, with locals Sean Yano and Kekoa Bacalso toppling international seeds Greg Emslie (South Africa) and Luke Hitchings (Australia). At 33 years of age, Yano is one of the oldest surfers in the event, but he proved experience matters more by posting one of the highest heat scores of the day to win his heat - 13.83 points out of 20. "I think maturity and experience count for a lot, especially here in Hawaii," said Yano. "I've been training harder and surfing more than I ever have in my life and coming into these events, I feel I have as good a chance as anyone of winning. Of course, there is a long way to go and a lot of variables that need to come together, but I feel I'm surfing at my best." Round one of the $30,000 Roxy Pro women's surfing took to the water early in the afternoon with 24 hopefuls looking to earn a place against the top ranked women in the world. Californian Holly Beck (Palos Verdes) was the standout of the first round, posting a total of 15.56 points out of 20 for the highest heat score of the day - topping both the men's and women's scores. Twenty-two year-old Beck will have to maintain form in the next round when she faces defending Roxy Pro champion Jacqueline Silva (Brazil) and current world number three Lynette MacKenzie (Australia). Others to advance to round two include Marie Pierre Abgrall (France), Yvette Bertleman (Hawaii) and Patricia Lopes (Portugal).

The Davidoff Cool Water Xpression Session heats ended the day on a high as an international field of 20 invited surfers set out to meet the criteria that called for aerials, progressive and most powerful maneuvers. A weather-tough crowd that outlasted the period rain showers of the day were rewarded for their endurance with an action-packed display of floating turns, 360 degree aerials and power moves. Nineteen year-old Jamie O'Brien, who made a name for himself during the Vans Triple Crown last year when he reached the final of the Xbox Pipeline Masters against an all-star field, starred again today, landing some big aerials and slamming hard for some of the most powerful moves too. Two 10-man heats were held with the top five surfers from each advancing to a final where they will battle for $10,000. Joining O'Brien in the final will be Jonathan Gonzalez (Canary Islands), Myles Padaca (Hawaii), Andy Irons (Hawaii), Flavio Padaratz (Brazil), Mick Fanning (Australia), Pancho Sullivan (Hawaii), Taj Burrow (Australia), Joel Parkinson (Australia), and Miki Picon (France). Today's swell is forecast to decrease in the coming days, with the next moderate swell to arrive in a few days time. Two more days of competition are needed before the Vans Hawaiian Pro, Roxy Pro and Davidoff Cool Water Xpression Session can be finalized. The $100,000 Vans Hawaiian Pro is the final event on the ASP men's World Qualifying Series calendar for 2002, and its 6-star rating makes it a critical event for those surfers looking to qualify for next year's elite World Championship Tour (WCT). Similarly, the $30,000 Roxy Pro also carries a lot of weight for the women's world tour as a 6-star WQS and the second-to-last WQS event of the year. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing will determine the men's and women's world and Triple Crown champions for 2002. Hawaii's Andy Irons and Australia's Layne Beachley currently lead their respective world title races.

WE’RE NOT FUNKIN’ AROUND!

There’s a tiny little Japanese restaurant on Oahu that will always own a place in my heart. It had a line going out the door every night because the food was simple, cheap, and very, very good. I experienced a touch of déjà vu as I took my place in line outside of Tokyo Tei in Wailuku and peered through its windows at the crowd of happy diners packed within. A short fifteen minutes later my friends and I were escorted past a tiny steam-box of a kitchen to a cozy table in the back. A large brass teapot arrived

all equally good in the crispy tempura batter. A bowl of rice on the side and a cup of dipping sauce complete the meal. The Calamari Katsu is next with a lighter crust than I expected and a moist, tender consistency. The Katsu sauce, though, is a little too strong for me. That’s okay because my friends’ wasabi and shoyu is a ready substitute and within easy reach. Their combo plates come in traditional looking square plates with compartments holding a sampling of Ahi Sashimi, slices from a nice looking cut of Teriyaki Steak, Shrimp Tempura, and steamed rice. This looks like the

with us and I poured a round while glancing over the short menu. No surprises here, this is classic Japanese cuisine with Teriyaki Steak, Shrimp Tempura, Teishoku, and Donburi. Our waitress returns and takes our order with admirable efficiency, leaving us to our tea and our conversation. There’s something about sipping out of those tiny little teacups that I really enjoy; elbows steadied on the table, steam rising through my fingertips. It’s the perfect way to start a meal, especially when followed with a bowl of miso soup sipped just the same way. The miso’s light, distinctive flavor is a step up from the tea, letting your belly know there’s more to come. The Vegetable Tempura arrives first, standing straight up off the plate. Rounds of onion, julienned carrot conglomerations, slices of eggplant and zucchini are

way to go. The shrimp is large and a natural partner for the crispy tempura. The Sashimi is fresh, bright red, and melts in my mouth. I’m surprised to find such quality at the price; it’s so good we order an extra plate to share between us. We decided during the course of our meal that a restaurant’s success depends upon its ability to satisfy the expectations of its customers. Judging by the restaurant’s longevity and the contented sighs of those around me, Tokyo Tei is doing just that. For me, though, they fall short of my old haunts, and leave me feeling a bit heavy. For a casual, Japanese style home cooked meal at a friendly price, visit Tokyo Tei on the lower level of Puuone Plaza at 1063 Lower Main. They’re open for lunch and dinner from Monday through Saturday at 11:00 to 1:30 and 5:00 to 8:30 P.M. Dinner only on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tokyo Tei is also available for catering and can be reached at 242-9630.

The Ebb & Flow Ensemble is Scott Anderson, clarinet/bass clarinet, Ignace Jang, violin, and Robert Pollock, piano. Special guests include, I Bei Lin, cello, Stuart Chafetz, (renowned composer of the Maui Symphony) timpani, Peter Rockford Espiritu, dance, Richard Nelson, lighting designer, Frances Ku, technical assistant, and Paul Janes-Brown, narrator. The concert continues Ebb & Flow Arts’ ongoing cooperation with the MACC. “We are thrilled to be cooperating with this important arts institution in Hawai’i,” says Ebb & Flow Arts Executive Director Robert Pollock. “The MACC’s full array of co-production services make this November 23 event very important for our three-year-old organization.”

Joining the Ebb & Flow Ensemble for the MACC performance, as well as workshops and lectures, is Korean composer Dr. Jee Young Kim. A graduate of Yale University, Dr. Kim has received numerous awards and commissions including a recent Bunting Fellowship at Harvard University. Her works are performed around the world and she is a participating composer in Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. “Dr. Kim’s extensive work on ancient and historical Asian music, her participation in the Silk Road Project, and her impressive academic credentials make her a perfect candidate for a residency,” says Pollock. “This project is in keeping with Ebb & Flow Arts’ objective to establish an international network for 1 to 2 week, annual, modern music and art, multimedia festivals on Maui.” The Ebb & Flow Ensemble performance will feature Claude Debussy’s Sonate (1915) in 3 movements; Roger Sessions’ Duo (1942) for violin and piano; the Hawaii premiere of Jee Young Kim’s Let's Play (2000) for bass clarinet, violin, cello and piano; the world premiere of Robert Pollock’s Science (2001) with narration by Paul Janes-Brown and dance by Peter-Rockford Espiritu; and Bela Bartok’s Contrasts (1938) in 3 movements. Jee Young Kim’s residency is supported in part by the Centennial Committee of Korean Immigration to the United States, the Baciu Cultural Fund, Bank of Hawai’i, the Hawai’i Community Foundation and the AHS Foundation.

PICKS THE FANTASTICKS 7:30pm Friday & Saturday, 6:00pm Sunday, at the historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. I went to this performance on a night that entailed for me negativity and turmoil, and honestly wasn’t in the mood to enjoy a damn musical, of all things. Ah, but enjoy it I did! The enthusiastic talent and infectious tunes sang by the cast members somehow lifted my spirits and warmed my heart. The timeless themes incorporated into the play were conducive to changing my perspective on life, love and the pursuit of happiness. And what a venue! Iao Theater has more soul and character than most hightech, modernized facilities we frequent. Although, air-conditioning would be nice...

CLASS ON PREPARING A FEAST FOR THE HOLIDAYS 10am Friday, at Kaunoa Senior Center. This is the season for feasting, to be sure, and considering my one and only attempt at preparing Thanksgiving dinner involved sticking a candy thermometer in the turkey, I think this class may just be the timely guidance some of us need.

WHALE MANIA Think of it as a gallery exhibit/scavenger hunt as you locate and appreciate these works of art spread throughout the island. This week, I spotted “The Prince of Whales” (see photo in Da Kine Calendar), a magnificent color ceramic tiled whale sculpture done by Maui artist Elaine Sherwood, and “A World of Aloha”, (see photo next week!), a beautiful blue earth whale sculpture created by the Lahainaluna High School Art Department with Michael Orr at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Send me photos or locations of what you find on your search!

YOGA WITH REYNA 10:30am Thursday, Sunday, & Tuesday at the Art School in Kapalua. Okay, so there are yoga classes on the west side after all! Experience the serene and positively exquisite beauty of your surroundings in Kapalua, as well as Venezuelan yoga instructor, Reyna.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

Harry's Secret Chamber Pot Tedium, Boredom and Monotony ) Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets ( The second installment in the Chris Columbus directed Harry Potter chain of movies starts off with a bombastic first 20 minutes that promptly devolves into a morass of poorly developed plot points and tortuous pacing that is infuriating as it is boring. Ill-defined characters appear and evaporate from the story as an undercurrent of 'rah rah Harry Potter' is whispered in the subtext of every scene for a character who never rises to his reputation as a wizard of magic, or of anything else for that matter. Kenneth Branagh provides brief intoxicated glee to the movie as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, a celebrity author posing-as-wizard at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The late Richard Harris ("Orca," "Unforgiven") lends inestimableyet-squandered dignity and gravitas to the role of Hogwarts Headmaster Professor Dumbledore. Although his voice at times can barley rise above a whisper, Harris rattles his scenes with loving passion and truthfulness. I admit that I am predisposed against the Harry Potter films primarily because I resent seeing full-grown adults riding the subway reading the equivalent of the "Hardy Boys" books as if they were masterworks of fiction. The common excuse among these readers' apologists is, "well at least they're reading." To me, that's like excusing irresponsible parents because, "at least they're procreating," or excusing corporate criminals because, "at least they're working." Grown-ups reading Bradbury, Tolkien, or Lovecraft I can understand, but how adults think it's all right to publicly interpret the written word of J.K. Rowling's fifth grade reading level, I just don't understand - lowest common denominator or not.

FILM

Now that 42 million book buyers are in their place as surefire movie patrons for the Potter films, the filmmakers prove themselves more consumed with maintaining a glossy public adoration of their beloved-yet-impotent hero than elevating the sub-comic book text. Once again Harry begins his journey to Hogwarts School under the watchful eye of his cruel foster parents. The oppressed Harry does a splendid job of ruining his keepers' quaint dinner party with the aid of a visiting schizophrenic "house-elf" named Dobby. Harry is soon liberated from his bedroom prison by his best friend Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and his two brothers, who arrive in a flying car reminiscent of a scene from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968). Ron and Harry end up missing their mystery train connection to Hogwarts and endanger their school's secrecy by flying the car cross-country to an exquisite landing in a very special Hogwarts tree. Once back in the swing of student life at Hogwarts with his pals Ron and Hermione (Emma Watson), Harry is put upon by bizarre events of student and animal petrifaction that insinuate him as the possible leader of an insidious plot against the Gryffindors and Hogwarts. The narrative gets progressively mushier as our trio of wizards struggles to concoct a potion that takes 30 days to fabricate in an effort to do something about the recent forbidden opening of the school's "chamber of secrets." The movie hits its peak when Harry makes his way into the lower depths of the school's gigantic (and conveniently empty plumbing pipes) to go head to head with an evil prince named Tom Riddle (Christian Coulson - "The Four Feathers") and his kidnap victim Ginny (Bonnie Wright). Harry battles an impressive monster snake in the chamber of plumbing in a scene that would have faired far better if it

had arrived a half hour sooner. Children in the rows of seats next to me were sleeping against one another when the movie's attacking reptilian climax finally arrived. By that time I was so numb from the film's computer generated imagery of zillions of spiders, funky Cornish Pixies and dogged redundancy of telling (but not showing) what a great character Harry Potter is, that I was ready to bolt for the exit doors. But the story needed another useless 15 minutes to neatly

tie itself into a Christmas bow, making me feel too much like Hunter S. Thompson waiting on an overdue delivery of alcohol.

tion of a leg, and finally, drug and alcohol abuse that killed her at age 47. FRIDAY AFTER NEXT - (R) - Comedy - The third installment in the successful Friday series, Friday After Next takes place during the Christmas season back in the old neighborhood where it all began. Although cousins Craig (Ice Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) have left behind the security of living with their parents, the rundown apartment they now share is filled with all the accoutrements and spirit of the holiday season. Everything is idyllic…until a ghetto Santa Claus breaks in and steals their Christmas presents and anything else he can stuff into his sack, including the rent money hidden in their stereo speakers. Faced with the harsh reality of a Christmas without presents and the threat of eviction if rent is not paid by day's end, their only hope of scoring some quick cash leads them to the local strip mall where they land jobs as unarmed security guards. In the process, Craig and Day-Day learn some comic lessons about the true meaning of the holiday season.

On his way, he crosses paths with Jinx (Berry) and Miranda Frost (Pike), who will play vital roles in the adventure. British special agent James Bond (Brosnan) teams up with an American spy codenamed Jinx (Berry) to take on a North Korean leader (Yune), who uses an experimental "facial mutation" device that allows him to take on new appearances... THE EMPEROR’S CLUB - (PG13) - Comedy Academy Award winner Kevin Kline stars as Arthur Hundert, a dedicated and inspiring Classics professor who has devoted his life to teaching at an elite boys' prep school. When a new student, Sedgewick Bell, the headstrong son of a powerful senator, joins his class, Mr. Hundert's life is inexorably altered. It is a clash of wills and personalities as these two people seemingly battle for the hearts and souls of the other students at St. Benedictus. Spanning 20 years, the story resumes when Bell, now a powerful and influential businessman, brings the retired professor back into his life and world. At a reunion of his students, Hundert is faced with the fear that he may have failed the most important challenge of his life - to have been a great teacher. Included in the mix will be David Siqueiros (Banderas), Rivera's rival in the Mexican art world, Tina Modotti (Judd), a famed Italian photographer, and Nelson Rockefeller (Norton), who famously contracted Rivera to paint the lobby mural of Rockefeller Center, only to renege because it included a portrait of Lenin. Others in their social circle included Russian leader and refugee Leon Trotsky (Rush) (soon before Stalin had him assassinated there), muralist Jean Charlot, painter Pablo O'Higgins, composer Silvestre Revueltas, and photographer Edward Weston. In addition to being a great artist, Frida Kahlo was also a bisexual and a communist, struggling with an abusive husband, a life of wracking pain following a trolley accident, the amputa-

I've been dating my girlfriend for about a year, and living with her for several months. Since we moved in together, she's taken two overnight trips out of town to see her exboyfriend. He is a guy she dated for 10 years and was engaged to at one time. Besides telling her how much he loves her, he apparently spends a lot of time criticizing me and our relationship. She says she's just trying to salvage a friendship with him. Thus far, I think I've been understanding, and not motivated by jealousy, but I've been honest about my discomfort. Still, I'm beginning to think that she isn't 100 percent invested in our relationship, and that I've been rather clueless. Home Boy You let the "F" word fly right by you. Everybody does. The word "friendship" has become a tiny oyster cracker lost in a sea of post-post-modernism, neo-prehistoricism, and reconstructed post-structuralism. It's a slider word -- one of those boring, everyday words like "spirituality" that make the average person's critical thinkability duck out for an espresso and a smoke. As with friendship, everybody agrees that spirituality is a good thing, but nobody can actually define what, exactly, it is. This means it's easily repurposed

Now is the time to plan Something exotic and unusual. Wisdom will come if you're willing to learn. On the 24th-26th the vibe is high for creative inspiration. Pay attention to your dreams this weekend. TAURUS: Your economic outlook is about to get rosier. Things come and go like the tide going in and out. The best way to go through changes is with a sense of humor. By Wednesday you should take time out for creativity and matters of the heart. GEMINI: Does it feel as though your inner child was being beat-up by its outer parent? Responsibility lies with an emotionally volatile situation at hand. You may come out with "flying colors". You've got what it takes to make peace while being satisfied with slow progress. CANCER: The weekend has your name written across it with the Cancer moon. Watch health issues as you enter into flu season. Parental karma plays a role. By Monday you'll be working on material wealth and securing your possessions. LEO: Suddenly it's okay to be an exhibitionist. Your creative mojo is just beginning to pick up steam. Put your heart into everything you do. Your generous nature will be hard to contain. The moon in Leo on Monday and Tuesday makes for a great pre-Thanksgiving celebration. VIRGO: Laughing at uncomfortable situations is one tonic for depression that will be used whether it's appropriate or not. Family members will be taking more of your attention. The moon moves into Virgo Tuesday night at 8:42 PM. Make peace with your household. LIBRA: It's time to sit around the fire and tell stories. Poems sprout out of cracks in the pavement,

to put an enlightened shine on various dubious activities; for example, "Yes, I try to run over the neighbor's cat, but only when I'm on my way to yoga." It's the perfect justification for a superiority complex, as in, "My consciousness is an honor student, and your consciousness got caught smoking pot in the boys' bathroom." Following the lead of clever "spiritual" people, your girlfriend has repurposed "friendship" to add a half-boyfriend to her boyfriend collection, probably to meet her ego's (apparently vast) needs. Unlike a lot of boyfriends, you don't seek to limit your girlfriend's friendships to women and the occasional hermaphrodite. Unfortunately, the guy in question isn't an aspiring friend; he's a one-man propaganda campaign to yank your girlfriend out of your life. Just about all he hasn't done is hire an ad agency and buy time during her favorite TV shows: "Current boyfriend leaving you tired and listless? Call now, for free plane fare!" Sit your girlfriend down and find out whether she wants to be in a partnership or a crowd scene. Until you do, you probably won't have any peace.
