LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR TIP YOUR ALOHA With regards to tipping, I work in the service industry for tips as well as many others on this island… Some days are good and some are bad. That’s the nature of the service industry. For all of those who complain about not getting tipped enough money for the job that you were hired to do, shut up!! Tipping is an option not a requirement! Maybe if you guys would concentrate on spreading your aloha at work, you might get more tips. If you don't think that you are making enough money at the job you currently hold, maybe it's time to look for another one. Stop thinking about money and start thinking about people. Lechuga DiSalvov, Via Email

MAUI COUNTY MISSING AN ESSENTIAL Maui County needs a MRF. What’s a murf? That’s the acronym for Material Recovery Facility, something Maui is sorely in need of. Communities that are concerned with recycling consider MRFs to be an essential service, like running water, electricity and landfills. MRFs are where materials are taken, sorted and processed for reuse. They extend the landfill and allow for

resource recovery. 74% of the garbage on Maui is commercial and 26% is residential. While the county provides a facility for recycling residential waste, they do not provide for commercial waste. The business sector currently sends its recyclable materials to a handful of processors who are willing to risk equipment failures and fluctuations in the market value of those materials to provide this service. When the process breaks down, the haulers arrange for storage and go searching for someone who will take the material and reuse it. Imagine if the landfill suddenly closed its gates. Where would all the garbage go? Would the haulers just stop picking it up? Maui County can’t have it both ways. They can’t say they support recycling until they provide a reliable facility for everyone. We have a choice. We can put our tax dollars into more landfills or worse, an incinerator or we can put them into a resource recovery facility. I think the choice is clear. I want my tax dollars to fund a MRF. Camille Armantrout, Makawao

EASY TO VOTE ABSENTEE After this strenuous election, the turnout may be small for the special election November 30, to fill Patsy Mink's term until January. But voting absentee is so

easy, we could get much higher turnout if people tried it. Call the Maui County Clerk's office, 2707749, and ask for an absentee ballot. Anyone can get one, you don't have to be ill or away from the island. They will send an application, you fill it out and send back, and they mail you a ballot. Fill it out at your leisure, mail back in the post-paid envelope. No lines, no having to take off from work, no having to remember which day the election is. Plenty of time to investigate who you want to vote for. Another benefit of voting absentee is you don’t have to listen to those dirty-politics automated phone calls giving last minute smears. I really resent those. Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku

COMIC ERROR? Unfortunately I am one of those kinds of people who notice every editing error in any and all of the material I read. In your October 17 edition I was beyond amused at a one letter omission in the Bu La’ia article. I was thoroughly enjoying Don Gonning’s article when I cam to the paragraph regarding Bu’s stand on transcendental meditation TM (I support all of his ideas), and lo and behold, either cosmic coincidence or a comic faux pax occurred right before my very eyes! The article refers to the supporters of TM that “it is a way

to tap into comic consciousness.” I almost choked on my fish taco as I acknowledged the hilarious absurdity of this, or was Mr. Gronning just checking to see if his audience would “get it”? Either way, thanks for bringing refreshing news, cartoons, editorials, music information and jovial eye candy to this weary set of starving eyes. Peter Hansen, Kihei

SPECIAL ELECTION The special 2nd District Interim election on 11/30 has done something no politician, religious leader or other event has been able to do in Hawaii. It has united Democrats and Republicans, Liberals and Conservatives, Men and Women, Haole and Local, almost everybody in a common belief, this election is unnecessary and at best unimportant. Wrong! Even without congress in session, important decisions can and are being made. Important negotiations are taking place. And Hawaii’s 2nd District is without a voice in these proceedings. Now, with a Republican President, Republican House, and Republican Senate, Hawaii is especially voiceless in the planning and negotiations underway. To all of Hawaii’s voters, please take this election seriously. There are good, hard reasons to vote. John Carrol, via email

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

THE UNTOUCHABLE BUSH Have you ever seen The Untouchables with Kevin Costner and Sean Connery? In the movie, Costner plays Elliot Ness and Sean Connery is his back-up, as they are given free rein to bring down Robert de Niro’s perfect Al Capone. Ness’s crew is called the Untouchables because that’s exactly what they are. Ness was given complete immunity to bring down Capone - no matter what. It had gotten that bad. You know what President Bush is doing right now? He is playing the role of an international Elliot Ness and he wants to bring down his version of Al Capone – no matter what. Like in The Untouchables, it has been decided that enough is enough. It has been decided that for the good of the world, the bad guys have to be brought down. But in this case, the stage is a little bigger than the city of Chicago and the players involved are a little more territorial than rival police agencies. Unfortunately, Bush has bitten off quite a big mouth-full. While his determination is admirable, some countries probably find it a little threatening. First he had bin Laden and now he’s throwing Saddam Hussein into the mix. Dedicating his country to bringing down a villain like bin Laden earned him kudos, but throwing a full-fledged dictator into the mix earned him some raised eyebrows. It’s almost like Elliot Ness adding another Al Capone to his list when he hasn’t even brought down the first one yet. Sure, people want Bush to be successful but he’s got to prove his worth before everyone jumps on his bandwagon. And when you’ve got countries like Indonesia that still don’t think there’s anything wrong going on, you’re going to have a tough time making a convincing stand on the world stage. If denial were a disease, Indonesia would

have to be placed under quarantine. Americans ought to know because we just had the same disease and look where it got us. But at least we now see the nature of the disease and are looking for a cure. What do Indonesian authorities have to say? "We say it is safe. There is no problem." This came after police in Indonesia ignored a recent terror warning that closed several major international capitals in the capital city of Jarkata. Unfortunately, that’s what they’ve been saying about the presence of al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups on their soil for the last year and it all it got them was part of their main island getting blown halfway to the moon last month. But they still act like nothing is wrong. Living in denial is not good for any person let alone any nation. Continuing to let criminals like bin Laden and Hussein masquerade as visionaries and leaders is a dangerous case of denial. However, that seems to be what some countries are suffering from because, while Bush has declared himself the Untouchable Elliot Ness, the rest of the world is not sure it wants to be on the same stage as the shoot-out between Bush and his Al Capone.

WHO’S WATCHING WHO? Navy SEALS are supposed to be some of America’s most highly trained and secretive commandos. So why can we turn on CNN and watch video of their training sessions and complete breakdowns of their mission reports? Why do covert op commanders have to give press briefings on the things they just did and the things they are about to do? Because the media has found a loophole. The constitution guarantees the public a right to know what their government is doing and the press is granted access to information to help let them know, but there is a very sketchy line between need-to-know and intrusion. The media should not be allowed to sacrifice national security in the name of cheap entertainment just because of a loophole in the constitution.

I never saw it coming. Out of nowhere, on Sept. 9, my sweetheart revealed he had been cheating on me for the previous 2.5 weeks. He assured me he had ended the affair Sept. 7. From the 9th to the 18th, we saw things go from horrible to better. On Thursday, Sept. 19, we went out, and then he came home with me and spent the night. That Friday morning, things were almost lovingly normal: “kisses” and laughter. Friday night, he went out with friends. Two days later, he blindsided me with “I think we should see other people,” then confessed that Friday night he saw and spoke to “her.” I’m 24. He’s 25. He says she is in her early 30’s, has had a failed marriage, and knew he was taken. On the 24th, he pathetically declared he cheated because he felt our relationship was over, and being with me now was like being with his best friend. He cannot explain Thursday/Friday. We broke up over the phone that night. Our 5th anniversary would have been Oct. 11. Previously, I would have laughed if anyone told me he would hurt me like this. Now, I just want the pain to stop. Maui County Council Bans Exhibit of Captive Whales and Dolphins A bill banning the exhibit of captive whales and dolphins in Maui was passed by a unanimous vote of the Maui County Council yesterday. "We have the ocean as our natural dolphinarium," commented Maui County Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson who had introduced the bill more than a year ago. At the County Council meeting yesterday she noted that, "This matter has received more public support than any other matter in the history of Maui County. "We need to listen to the will of the people and keep cetaceans wild and free," she concluded. More than 15,000 petition signatures and hundreds of letters, including those from country blues singer Bonnie Raitt, and the producers of the Free Willy movies, Lauren Shuler Donner and her husband Richard Donner (also of Lethal Weapon film fame), poured into the offices of the Maui County Council, urging them to not allow the construction of a dolphinarium that had been proposed for Maui, or the keeping of captive marine mammals on Maui. The new bill, known as Bill #64, states

that “the Council finds that cetaceans (dolphins and whales) are highly intelligent -- and highly sensitive -- marine mammals. The Council further finds that the presence of cetaceans in the Pacific Ocean surrounding Maui County provides many cultural, spiritual, and economic benefits to the County's residents. The Council also finds that the exhibition of captive cetaceans leads to distressful living conditions for these animals. Therefore, the purpose of this ordinance is to prohibit the exhibition of captive cetaceans (dolphins and whales)." Under the approved bill, it is unlawful to exhibit captive cetaceans (dolphins and whales) on Maui. Any person who violates this law shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars or imprisoned not more than one year or both. "As a small child I had a chance to visit various dolphinariums and aquariums that had cetaceans. I was excited as a youngster, but the older I grew, the less excited I was about seeing them in tanks," commented Councilmember Charmaine Tavares, Presiding Officer Pro Tempore. "I went to visit Keiko at the Oregon Coast Aquarium before they tried to release him, and it was the saddest thing I saw," she commented. ➤ BY MONA K. WOOD

The Laborers' International Union of North America ("LIUNA"), Local 368, AFLCIO, is moving steadily ahead in its mission to organize the state's approximately 5,200 substitute teachers, according to James "Jimmy" Kuroiwa, Jr., Union Representative and Organizer. Late last month and earlier this month, the Local 368 organized pickets to express their strong opposition to the planned re-wording of Hawai'i Revised Statutes ("HRA"), Chapter 87A, by the management trustees of the State Employer Union Trust Fund ("EUTF") in their administrative rules. The re-wording would have eliminated benefits for most substitute teachers, which are supposed to take effect July 2003. Currently, substitute teachers receive no benefits. "Local 368 and the substitute teachers have won the first round through these informational pickets," said Kuroiwa. "The EUTF board failed to assemble a quorum and has canceled all future meetings through the end of the current administration. The action now leaves the decisions in the hands of the next administration, which commences on December 2, 2002, and we hope they will support the substitute teachers' rights to benefits and recognize Local

368 as the exclusive bargaining agent for the substitute teachers." Kuroiwa cautions that there may be attempts, again, to amend the existing law for substitute teachers to receive benefits this coming 2003 legislative session, and "we must all remain vigilant." The fight for benefits, however, is only one issue within the real mission to organize the state's substitute teachers. Local 368 addressed the benefits issue separately because of the immediate need due to the threat posed by the management trustees of the EUTF Board. It also clearly illustrated the need for a collective bargaining agent for this group. Now Local 368 can move forward in their historic effort to finally bring representation to substitute teachers and give them bargaining powers unavailable previously. Response from substitute teachers, state-wide, has been overwhelmingly positive. Local 368 sent a proposal letter to Governor-elect Linda Lingle on November 18, 2002. The Governor, Board of Education and DOE Superintendent need to sign-off on the proposal for representation by Local 368 to take effect. No response has been received, as yet. Local 368 has initiated discussions and ➤

"The pictures do not portray how sad it was to see him in the tank. "We don't need this (keeping animals in tanks) on Maui, just as we don't need casinos," Tavares said. "This is not what Maui is about." Across the country, there are 17 cities/counties that have passed ordinances that prohibit the display of cetaceans. South Carolina has a similar ban. Maui is world famous as a place to watch humpback whales in winter and is home to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Wild spinner, bottlenose, spotted and rough-toothed dolphins live offshore year round, along with pilot whales, false killer whales and other odontocetes. It will now be recognized as a place where whales and dolphins will all live free -- and in the wild. "Here we are with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary around us, protecting the nation's primary mating and calving area for the endangered humpback whale," said Irene Bowie, Managing Director of Pacific Whale Foundation, one of the whale and dolphin conservation organizations that supported the bill. "We are blessed with the presence of wild dolphins in the ocean around us; we don't need to keep these animals in tanks to introduce them to people. "We are grateful for the work of the County Council on behalf of whales and dolphins," said Bowie. "This decision proves we can do what is right," said Councilmember and newly elected Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa.

Kuroiwa also commented on the lawsuit for back pay to substitute teachers filed on Maui on November 15th. He said that lawsuit is a separate action not involving Local 368. "We support getting the back pay for the teachers and will definitely address that, but need to focus on the organizing at this time," said Kuroiwa. "We need to negotiate with the State on many important issues, including back pay, and do not want to put all of our energies and time to respond to a lawsuit on a single issue, which could take years to resolve." The following Local 368 contact information is being provided for substitute teachers across the state to receive current information.

Cookin' sizzles on stage What do you get when you cross Jackie Chan with Benihana? Cookin’. The longest-running hit in Korean theater history, a runaway success in Japan, and on its way to Broadway, Cookin’ will make its Maui premiere Thursday and Friday, December 5 & 6 at 7:30 pm, and on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm in the MACC’s Castle Theater. “Call it Benihana goes berserk. Take equal parts of Jackie Chan, the Marx Brothers and Stomp – and blend,” Says CBS-TV. Cookin’ slices, dices, chops and beats a zesty blend of martial arts, samulnori drumming, comedy and juggling as four zany master chefs prepare a wedding banquet in complex rhythms with twirling knives, “Frisbee” plates and stir-fry flambé. Cookin’ is fast, funny, foot-tapping and breathtaking. Newsweek magazine declared Cookin’ “A big hit! Spectacular!” and CNN heralded Cookin “Exhilarating! A hit musi-

cal!” Delightfully irreverent and undeniably spellbinding, Cookin’ will whet your appetite, tantalize your taste buds and leave you hungry for more. Cookin’ takes the traditional rhythms of Korean Samulnori drumming to a fast-paced kitchen percussion performance combining comedy and rhythm to culminate in a delightful action-packed evening in the kitchen. Samulnori has become the most popular and recognizable traditional art form in Korea, employing five basic rhythms at varying speeds reconstructing and reflecting the routine beat of Korean life. In Cookin’, the typical instruments of Samulnori have been replaced with utensils commonly found in the kitchen, including knives, cutting boards, pots and pans. While Cookin’s roots are firmly rooted in Korean culture, it draws extensively on other Asian and Western influences, including modern rock, jazz, martial arts, B movies and the

Marx Bothers. And make no mistake, Cookin’ celebrates the Korean love of food. Get a bag of white rice, 8 containers of tofu, 8 heads of cabbage, 8 cucumbers, 6 large carrots, 4 large yellow onions, a bottle of rum, cooking oil, garlic, bell peppers, miso soup, glass noodles and a duck, and you’ve got a good start on the ingredient list for one performance of Cookin’. Add butane lighters, three gas-burner stoves, vigorous chopping, heat and flames, and you are close to the secret recipe that has made Cookin’ an international phenomenon. Cookin’ will literally heat up the Castle Theater Stage with gas stoves, flambé and more. Critics and audiences both rave about the magnificent smells that waft through the theater during Cookin’ performances, as the aroma of the fresh ingredients coming together wafts into the audience. Cookin’ has been described as Korea’s answer to stomp, but unlike Stomp, Cookin’ has a plot. Three fun-loving, competitive and

not entirely competent young chefs, under pressure from their manager, are set to the task of preparing a weeding banquet, from soup to cake, with a strict time limit. Adding to the encumbrance is the manager’s mischievous nephew, who is added to the crew at the last minute. The performance follows the endearing chefs as they struggle to overcome the rivalries, trials and tribulations that are inevitable when there are too many cooks in the kitchen and an overzealous manager. The result is a feast for the senses as the chefs use every kitchen utensil in the kitchen, as well as their own bodies to drum out rhythms and get laughs. Any show that has characters with names like “Nephew,” Sexy Food Dude” and “Female Cook,” has got to have its share of comedic drama. Nothing on the stage remains still for a moment as the cast performs an exhausting combination of dance, slapstick, comedy and

physical stunt work to the beats of the story and the sounds of the live band. Add to the plot the squabbles about rank, resentment of authority and male rivalry, a love triangle, and of course there’s the clock ticking away in the background counting the seconds to the chefs’ wedding banquet deadline. The creator of Cookin’, Korean actor and television star Seung Whan Song, was inspired by productions like Stomp and Tap Dogs, but felt that he could add additional elements that celebrated his heritage. “Both shows have been a huge influence on me,” says Song, “although I went away from them thinking how much more exciting and unique our music is. Also, both those shows lack a storyline, while I felt I could create a really dramatic musical set in a modern restaurant kitchen. “Basically, I wanted to celebrate our culture and reforms so the rhythms are inspired by the sounds all Koreans grow up with – our mothers slicing, dicing, chopping food in the family kitchen – as well as percussion and samulnori drumming. The difference is that in the show the actors play out these rhythms, the beat of Korean life, on everything from saucepans to the stove, as well as hour-glass and barrel-shaped drums and gongs. We are actually making pictures with sound.” Known as Nanta (translated “Crazy Beat”) in its Korean homeland, the show opened in Seoul in 1997 and has since played to half a million people. It is the longest running performance in Korean history and even has its own theater. Since opening, Cookin’ has given more than 1,500 performances all over the world. Following the Maui performances, the show will make its way to Broadway. The Maui premiere of Cookin’ coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first Korean immigrants to Hawaii, and the performances are in honor of the Korean Centennial Celebration. Even with its Korean roots, Cookin’ provides a high energy easy to watch experience that transcends age and international barriers with its infectious rhythms and humor. Combining a variety of furious and fun rhythms, the physical action of a Jackie Chan movie, and the mischievous child in all of us, Cookin’ will whip you into a state of total enjoyment. You’ll never look at food the same way again.

DIFFICULTLISTENING

BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE

KIMYA DAWSON: I'M SORRY THAT SOMETIMES I'M MEAN (Rough Trade, www.antifolk.homestead.com) If you don't care for acoustic guitars, home recordings, cute honest frustration, and good times, then this record may not be for you. The first solo album by Moldy Peaches co-founder Kimya Dawson is an expansion on the more introspective moments that she and Adam had started together in their band. You will find yourself amidst fun and creative wordplay detailing songs about boys, peeing, and her and Oprah saving the kids together. You will have a laugh and feel a little sad at the same time. A winner. [Tang Li Wheebs] I don't really like it. [The Mole]

JAZZYFATNASTEES: THE TORTOISE & THE HARE (Cool Hunter, www.jazzyfatnastees.com) I normally don't enjoy listening to soul/r&b, but for some reason I like this album. These women share certain similarities in their sound with fellow Philadelphian collaborators, The Roots, maintaining a somewhat minimalist hip-hop feel. Layering their punchy mid-tempo beats with soulful harmonized vocals, this is a well-produced and relaxing album. A lot of the contemporary r&b that I've heard is so mellow that I find it boring, but this isn't the case with the Jazzyfatnastees. Rather, they are unafraid to increase the tempo at times, and with the addition of creative and subtly playful lyrics, The Tortoise & The Hare is a pretty stimulating listen. [The Mole] Not really my sort of thing. [Tang Li Wheebs]

Leaving their dreamy Beta Band meets the Beach Boys sound of last year's Chemistry Is What We Are album behind, Simian opts for a more direct approach on their sophomore release. Catchy 60's-influenced pop songs go hand in hand with electro beats to produce a modern album sounding like nothing else out there at the moment. Great vocals, electronic textures, and catchy songwriting make this an album to add to your collection if you dig quirky Brit bands or just want something new to have fun with. You can even dance to it. [Tang Li Wheebs] This is pretty cool - certainly different. Not slow and boring, like most of the stuff Wheebs reviews. [The Mole]

HIP HOP WEINERS: ALL CHICKEN, NO BEEF (Peanuts & Corn, www.peanutsandcorn.com) Hip Hop Weiners consists of the two veteran MC's, Pip Skid and John Smith, of Canada's Break Bread collective. Although the album was supposed to be a silly disposable side-project, upon listening to the lyrics, there's a lot more depth to Hip Hop Weiners than their name would have one believe. With just the right amount of comedy to keep it interesting, the majority of the subject matter on All Chicken No Beef consists of social and political commentary. Pip Skid, apparently no better off financially since the release of his Money Matters EP earlier this year, continues his angry ranting about the woes of being broke and the trappings of the political system, while John Smith relates the same issues with a somewhat more light-hearted and calm approach. With crisp and subtly melodic production, All Chicken, No Beef is thought provoking and ear pleasing. [The Mole] Not fun or catchy enough for my tender ears. [Tang Li Wheebs]

LOSCIL: SUBMERS (Kranky, www.brainwashed.com/kranky) On his second release Vancouver's Loscil (Scott Morgan) delivers a rather nice rhythmic throb well suited for relaxing or letting your thoughts drift off to the land of many layered stereo-panning tones. Locating the ambient tribute to submarines album next to Ritchie Hawtin's "Concept 1" or one of Pole's dub landscapes would be good indication of the territory this album spans. Not for people who insist on standard song structure and vocals or those sorry folks that can't handle a good drone. [Tang Li Wheebs] I'm one of those sorry folks that can't handle a good drone. [The Mole] Would you like to hear the music that you’ve just read about? Visit www.motionrecordings.com/reviews.html for audio samples and links. The Mole is an MC/producer and owner of Motion Recordings (www.motionrecordings.com). Tang Li Wheebs is an electronic musician and owner of Snail On A Stick Records (www.snailonastick.com). Send music to be reviewed to Mole & Wheebs; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768.

Alberta (Canada) judge Shelagh Creagh ruled in October that prison inmate Shane Arthur Wilson could not be punished for carrying around a homemade plastic knife since Wilson said the knife was only for defending himself against prison gangs. This, and a similar decision currently being appealed by another Alberta judge have predictably outraged prison guards across Canada. And a November Washington Post dispatch from Mexico reports that escaping from prison is not a crime in that country (nor is running away from police or lying about guilt) because, as one Supreme Court justice put it, Mexico respects the individual's "basic desire for freedom." Absolutely the Least Substantial Reason for a Knife Fight: Police in Mansfield Township and Hackettstown, N.J., charged Emmanuel Nieves, 23, with aggravated assault on Nov. 13 after he allegedly slashed the face of his friend Erik Saporito, 21, as the two men fought after arguing over which one had more hair on his buttocks.

NOT MY FAULT In September, Robert Rozenhart, now 56, won his 7-year-old lawsuit against Skier's Sportshop (Edmonton, Alberta) for injuries suffered on his maiden attempt to in-line skate, which came after a Skier's employee tried unsuccessfully to tell Rozenhart not to venture out until the store's instructor arrived to help him. Rozenhart skated away anyway, and was on a downward incline when he first realized he did not know how to stop. In October, Kevin William Presland, 44, commenced his lawsuit against the James Fletcher Hospital in Newcastle, Australia, in which he is asking to be financially compensated because, he said, hospital personnel released him prematurely after a brief psychiatric admission in 1995 and thus made it easy for him to kill his prospective sister-in-law a few hours later. Presland's lawyer acknowledges that nothing can be done to help the woman's family but says Presland, at least, deserves a payoff. The hospital says Presland was calm and rational and that it had no legal basis for detaining him.

WEIRD WORKPLACES Conscientious workers at the ARO Campulung auto plant in Romania offered in October to help pay off the company's debts by selling their sperm to a fertility clinic in the city of Timisoara, at the equivalent of (U.S.) $50 a session. Said the plant's union leader, "We have found (a solution) that even the best economists have never thought of." (However, to pay the equivalent (U.S.) $20 million debt in full would require 400,000 sessions, or 400 sessions for each of the 1,000 males at the plant.)

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Adventures With Gasoline: Octavio Soto, 44, and Jose Cezares, 23, were hospitalized with third-degree burns in Fitchburg, Mass., in September when they attempted to saw into the vehicle gas tank in which they had hidden $100,000 worth of cocaine; an errant spark from their sawing created a flash fire.

UPDATES TO RECENT NEWS OF THE WEIRD STORIES Mayor Jay Lee of Virgin, Utah (a town that once required a gun in every house for selfdefense and that also once banned United Nations activities within its borders), announced there would be a $25 charge for anyone who wished to speak up at Town Council meetings (October). OUR CIVILIZATION IN DECLINE Officials at Somerville (N.J.) High School warned students in October to stop trying to get high by choking each other into unconsciousness. (With the so-called "California Knockout," a student holds his breath for 10 seconds to get light-headed, after which a pal squeezes his neck to put him out.) And University of Pennsylvania researchers found that the average price of a black-market human kidney in India has dropped (despite insufficient supply) from the equivalent of (U.S.) $1,603 to $975, suggesting that wealthier, kidney-needing people have learned how to put the squeeze on impoverished donors.

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ... After five months of nightly practice, Jonathan Smith of Delaware, Ohio, beat 16 finalists (out of 50,000 entrants) for the $1 million DeWalt power-screwing championship by drilling five screws in less than seven seconds (Phoenix). Only a $1,200 first prize was offered, however, in November's international championship of the World Rock Paper Scissors Society (Toronto). At an annual judicial conference, Taiwanese judges voted 49-11 that oral sex, without intercourse, should not be a legal ground for adultery (Taipei). Japan, in a long economic stagnation, posted an encouraging 0.8 percent growth in personal consumption in August, but economists noted the main component was a 34 percent rise in spending on funerals.

Triple Crown Wrap Up

Falconer caught the two biggest waves of the 30minute final while her opponents fought it out in her wake. Falconer finished with a total of 11.67 points out of 20 (based on her best two rides), Beachley finished on 10.57, Cornish scored 6.76 and Silva struggled to find anything, catching just one wave for a tiny two point total. "This is a real high point for me and, professionally, I haven't had any for a while," said Falconer. "I was consistent today. I don't think I was surfing at my best, but I persevered with what I had and it paid off. It was kind of a strange way for me to win - I'm used to winning with really good form, but today it was consistency that paid off.” While savoring today's victory, Falconer's eyes are on defending her title on Maui and hopefully claiming a Triple Crown title.

Victories for Hawaiian Pro, Roxy Pro and Davidoff Garcia Claims Fourth Vans Hawaiian Pro Haleiwa Title In what will go down as one of the best days of waves and competition in the history of the Vans Hawaiian Pro, Hawaii's Sunny Garcia claimed his fourth Hawaiian Pro title at Haleiwa Thursday, November 21, 2002, taking an early lead on the overall Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series ratings. Garcia, who previously won this event in 1992, 1993, and 2000, led the 35-minute final from start to finish defeating Tom

gash to the head he sustained in the quarter finals after a collision with his surfboard, the pain was all but forgotten by the conclusion of the event. Overall scores for the final had Garcia on 15.5, Whitaker with 12.6, 10.73 for Paterson, and 10.6 for Irons. "I was fortunate to get two good waves right at the beginning of the final and then the waves got bumpy and the scores kind of dropped," said Garcia. "My first wave was a deep barrel and that got me going. "I'm almost speechless. It feels insane to win a fourth time here. I've been surfing here since

RESULTS: Vans Hawaiian Pro Final (4-man heat, first 2 advance, top 2 wave scores count in total.) 1. Sunny Garcia (Hawaii) 15.5; 2. Tom Whitaker (Australia) 12.6; 3. Jake Paterson (Australia) 10.73; 4. Andy Irons (Hawaii) 10.6. Semi-Finals: H1: Jake Paterson (Aus) 18.33; Andy Irons (Haw) 18.03; Joel Parkinson (Aus) 15.46; Kelly Slater (USA) 14.57 H2: Sunny Garcia (Haw) 15.27; Tom Whitaker (Aus) 14.87; Mick Fanning (Aus) 14.1; Damien Hobgood (USA) 13.3

The $10,000 Davidoff Cool Water Xpression Session was also finalized on Friday with an allstar men's lineup that included defending Vans Triple Crown champion Myles Padaca (Hawaii), Pancho Sullivan (Hawaii), Mick Fanning (Australia), Flavio Padaratz (Brazil), Miki Picon (France) and Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii). Awards were made for the most powerful, most progressive, best aerial and most futuristic maneuvers. O'Brien cleaned up the opposition by taking out two of the categories for a $5,000 prize. He executed the best aerial - a backhand air reverse, and the most futuristic move - a fore-hand lipslide to reverse. Sullivan was clearly the most powerful surfer in the lineup, taking out that division with a slamming fore-hand carve, and Fanning's fore-hand sliding gouge won the award for the most progressive move. "This is where we all get the chance to push the limits of surfing," said O'Brien. "Just looking for one big move in a 20 minute heat. These are the kind of moves we're always pushing for in competition, so it's cool to get the chance to just go off."

Final (4-woman heat, top 2 wave scores count in total.) 1. Neridah Falconer (Australia) 11.67; 2. Layne Beachley (Australia) 10.57; 3. Samantha Cornish (Australia) 6.76; 4. Jacqueline Silva (Brazil) 2.0

Semi-Finals: (4-woman heats, first 2 advance, top 2 wave scores count in total.) H1: J. Silva 18.47; L. Beachley 17.07; Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) 12.67; Marie Pierre Abgrall (France) 6.33 H2: S. Cornish 16.76; N. Falconer 13.27; Rochelle Ballard (Hawaii) 9.83; Keala Kennelly (Hawaii) 8.7

Jamie O’Brien’s $5000 Maneuver Whitaker (Australia), Jake Paterson (Australia) and defending Vans Hawaiian Pro champion Andy Irons (Hawaii). Garcia, 32, is a five-time Vans Triple Crown Series champion and has his eye set on a sixth title. His win earned him $10,000. Waves ranged from 12 to occasional 20foot face heights today and the quarter final heats produced the highest scores of the event. Despite losing in semi-final one to Paterson and Irons, six-time world champion Kelly Slater posted a near-perfect heat score in the quarters - 19.73 points out of 20, with a couple of impossibly long tube-rides and giant top-to-bottom turns (10.0 and 9.73 point rides). Similarly, current world number one Irons had a crowd-filled beach fixated with his combination of powering round-house re-entries and vertical turns. But ultimately, the day belonged to Garcia. Australian Falconer Wins Her First Roxy Pro Australian Neridah Falconer broke a 12 month victory drought to claim first place in the eighth annual Roxy Pro at Haleiwa Friday, November 22, 2002, defeating reigning world champion Layne Beachley (Australia), Sam Cornish (Australia) and defending Roxy Pro champion Jacqueline Silva (Brazil). At 30 years of age, Falconer has been coming to Hawaii for the past 14 years. She has been successful in posting wins in Maui during the Vans Triple Crown Series of 2000 and 2001, but she has never been successful at Haleiwa and she is yet to win a Vans Triple Crown Series title. In the final, the size of the waves kicked in but inconsistency contributed to very few backup rides for those who didn't find their way into the choice sets. That was reflected in the scores;

DININGFEATURE

Stunning House Specialties I’ve never been a big fan of Wolfgang Puck. I’m not quite sure why; I’ve never met him or had his cooking. I think it’s just a gut level reaction against someone who’s already made it big enough to be seen on TV, in bookstores, and in the freezer aisle of your local grocery store. Well, Spago, his restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Wailea, is fast approaching its first anniversary and I decided to drop in and give him a chance to defend himself. I normally sneak into a place unannounced when I do these things so I can get an honest read on what’s really going on. A review is no good unless I’m eating the same food you’ll be getting when you go in, right? Well, word got out this time and Chef de Cuisine Adam Condon had time to marshal his troops and roll out the red carpet. All I can say is that with preferential treatment comes a diminishing margin of error (i.e. this meal better be perfect!). Chef Condon prepared a menu that allowed us a sampling from his daily offerings as well as a surprise or two that appear only as specials. We started with a mixed pupu of Opakapaka Ceviche and Spicy Ahi Poke in Sesame Miso Cones. The Ceviche is tart, slightly sweet, and melts smoothly in my mouth. The Poke is enriched with a touch of Chili Aioli and tucked into a tiny ice cream cone hand made from candied Sesame Seeds and Miso. Creative and deliciously done but gone in one bite. Next comes a Wild Mushroom Cappucino with a frothy head of steamed milk. That’s right, a mushroom cappuccino! This is a new one on me but it really works well. The cream of mushroom soup has texture and deep flavor, appreciated all the more for being sipped out of a dainty espresso cup. A drop of Truffle Oil on top is enough to send it over the edge. We get a little more substantial with the next

course: Miso Seared Walu on Sushi Rice with a sunny-side up Quail Egg. I’m really starting to feel special now. I’m told that Walu is the Hawaiian version of Hamachi and it’s moist and richly satisfying in its Miso Glaze. I can’t help but smile at the presentation: it reminds me of a mini Loco-moco done with class. It is definitely hard to pick a favorite tonight but the Whole Moi steamed Hong Kong Style gets my vote. The fish is incredibly moist and delicious, accented by a light Soy Vinaigrette, Baby Bok Choy, Snap Peas, Avocado and fresh chilis. If you’ve never had Moi before you have to make it to Spago and have it done this way. Really, I insist. And the food keeps on rolling out. The Crispy Duck with Mai Tai Sauce is nicely presented, the layered yellows and oranges reminding me of a sunset, followed by the Grilled Chinois Lamb Chops with Hunan Eggplant and Chili-Mint Vinaigrette. Chef Condon is toying with us expertly, balancing flavors and textures, flirting with over-indulgence. Our next course is Tangerine Granitas, a tart, lightly frozen affair in a Martini glass that serves to cleanse our palate for a final plate of mixed desserts. I take a moment here to lean back in my chair and breathe deeply, admiring the strangely alluring sea anemones enlarged upon the ceiling above me. As I recount my feast in my head I realize that I can’t find a single complaint. I tasted everything meticulously, searching for a mushy carrot, an over-charred eggplant, or a misplaced flavor, with no luck at all. Mahalo to Michelle for giving us flawless service and taking the time to describe each dish in detail as it arrived. My thanks to Adam Condon for the best meal I’ve had in some time. He’s a chef on top of his game and I can only assume that consistency is a given at his level. Spago should be at the top of your must try list with comfortable open air dining, excellent service, and stunning sunset views. Call ahead at 879-2999 for reservations or to have your special event catered. PHOTO: KIRSTEN GUENTHER

King Kalakaua’s Nutcracker Holiday Tradition Meets Cultural Charm One annual holiday tradition I remember from my childhood was my Grandmother taking me to see the Nutcracker ballet in Long Beach, California. At the time, as a tenyear-old girl with stars in her eyes, I was enthralled. Of all stage productions, the Nutcracker in sight and sound fully captures the dreamy magic of the holiday season as it might be seen and romanticized by children with joyfully uninhibited imaginations. Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet is a wondrous delight, as well as an entrancing, time-honored tradition for families at Christmastime all over the world. To see it is to believe again in fantasy and magic, beauty and virtue, and all that is sweetness and light. To miss it, well, a snowflake-covered crime! The most amazing thing is happening to whoever is lucky enough to live in Maui this season. Not only do we get to witness the wonder of The Nutcracker ballet in all its traditional glory with the unforgettable music of Tchaikovsky, we are fortunate enough to also experience the imaginative merging of Hawaiian history and dance integrated into the basic storyline as conceived by the Honolulu Dance Theatre. Matthew Wright, founder of the HDT and DirectorChoreographer of “King Kalakaua’s Nutcracker Ballet”, brilliantly masterminded a way to incorporate a more culturally-based character scheme and dance into the traditional ballet, yet still adhering to the musical integrity of Tchaikovsky that is so beloved in most versions of The Nutcracker. “I’m always looking for alternative twists on productions, so we’ve never been particularly mainstream,” explains Wright. “Up until this point, we’ve done a version of Scrooge that we’ve been doing since ’93, as opposed to the Nutcracker. We got to the point where we’ve been doing it for so long, that we thought it’d be nice to have a change, and we started looking for other Christmas alternatives. Obviously, ‘The Nutcracker’ springs to mind – it’s so popular. So we thought, if we

“Pineapple Pas de Deux” would do this, then I would like to do it in a way that was sort of indigenous to Hawaii or that was somewhat different visually speaking.” Honolulu Dance Theatre (HDT) is a not-forprofit arts educational organization founded in 1993 by its Artistic Director, Matthew Wright. HDT provides a resource for the development of original dance productions and is responsible in part for the continuing evolvement of the performing arts in the State of Hawaii. Matthew Wright organized the Honolulu Dance Theatre as a means to achieve what can best be illustrated by their mission statement:

To develop, produce, and present high quality original Dance and/or Theatre works for the purposes of education and entertainment and to promote the performing arts. The premise behind the original story of the Nutcracker involves the fantastic journey of a special girl who receives an exceptional wooden nutcracker for Christmas. The nutcracker comes to life, embarking them both on a series of spectacular adventures as they encounter exotic locales and captivating characters. In “King Kalakaua’s Nutcracker”, the audience is taken to the Iolani Palace with King Kalakaua, his niece, Princess Kaiulani, and other prestigious figures from Hawaiian history. Princess Kaiulani is given a nutcracker in the shape of an ancient Hawaiian warrior, who then defends and protects her from the savage Wild Boar. On their journey, they also experience the magnificence of the Waltz of the Hibiscus Flowers, the Dance of the Raindrops, the Dance of Princess Kaiulani’s Beloved Peacocks, and King Kalakaua’s Magical Land of the Rainbows. Princess Kaiulani is played with exquisite grace and charm by Marina Hitosugi-Levesque, who is Honolulu Dance Theatre’s youngest company member. She has been dancing for nine years, and started her ballet training with Celia Chun, who portrays a regal peafowl as well as a key dancer in the “Pineapple Pas de Deux” in “King Kalakaua’s Nutcracker.” Matthew Wright has also been a premier dancer in all versions of “Nutcracker” productions around the globe, and so is quite familiar with the nuances of the ballet, eager to show Maui this extraordinary production filled with added aloha. “It’s quite an exciting event for us,” he says. “Because of the size of the productions we do, it’s always been such a daunting project to move so many people to an outer island. But we bit the bullet and we’re bringing the full production!” Matthew is also hopeful that if there is a good response and the people of Maui enjoy the ballet, then HDT will come back and do it again next year, making “King Kalakaua’s Nutcracker” a wonderful new holiday tradition here on Maui! Hawaii Dance Theatre will be performing King Kalakaua’s Nutcracker on Saturday, November 30 at 2pm & 7:30pm, as well as Sunday, December 1 at 2pm, at the Maui Arts & Cutural Center’s Castle Theater. Tickets are $28, $18, and $10. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call the MACC box office at 242-SHOW.

PICKS KHRINJ 10pm Friday, at DeanO’s Maui Pizza Cafe. Don’t be scared. There are a few original bands here on Maui, but fewer (if none) that rock as hard and fast as Upcountry’s favorite little dark angels, Khrinj. For a slice of the metal pie, topped with a heaping dose of heart-pounding guitar & bass, thundering drums and rage-roaring vocals - why, it’s the perfect antithesis to the smarmy warm-nfuzziness of Thanksgiving and this blasted holiday (bah humbug!) season.

KELLY COVINGTON WITH BRIAN CUOMO DUO 9:15pm Thursday, at La Jazzerie. An alternative late-night scene...Kick back in this cozy dimly-lit nightclub, sip your martini as you lounge in one of the overstuffed couches, and let the smooth vocal stylings of Kelly Covington and the swanky jazz skills of Brian Cuomo Duo take you to a place in your soul that yearns to be cool, man. Do it for the ambience...(i.e. another chance to look really sophisticated when you’re on a date or trying to impress your friends!)

VOODOO SUNS 10pm Friday, at Kimo’s. Sometimes the amount of talent that we have here on Maui astounds me. Lead singer Anastasia rocks the house with her passionate and heart-felt renditions of all your favorite contemporary songs. Not just a cover band to be taken for granted - when you see them, you will know.

BAGPIPER JACK LEE 7pm Saturday, at Seabury Hall. Not for the faint of heart, bagpiping is a cultural art and a phenomenon. Plus, when and where else are you going to have a chance to see this shit?! Bagpiping is da bomb...

ERIC GILLIOM PROJECT BAND 8pm Monday, at Hapa’s. Willie K’s taking a week off and Gilliom is here to fill in with an all star cast of musicians and a surprise reunion of his Rocky Horror performers. Anything can happen and will, is what the word on the street is.

FILM

Happy Holidays from Craig and Emily!

Writer/actor Ice Cube's third movie in his "Friday" series is a bland, sloppy and incomplete comedy that plays like it should have gone straight to video. Music video director Marcus Raboy ("You Know How We Do It") debut directs for the big screen and it's painfully clear that he is out of his depths for the demands of a feature length comedy. Complete sentences of dialogue are lost and potentially hilarious episodes fade into a morass of clutter. The "Friday" series, as well as Ice Cube's far superior "Barbershop," are movies hatched in a situation comedy serial form that never feels entirely comfortable on the big screen. A '60s television inspired animated credit sequence takes up five minutes of "Friday After Next" sparse 85 minute running time, giving audiences all the more reason to spend their movie money elsewhere. It's only a few days before Christmas when Craig (Ice Cube) and his roommate Day-Day (Mike Epps - "Next Friday") are burgled in their Los Angeles, Shady Palms apartment by a South Central Santa Claus who uses their Christmas tree as a bludgeoning weapon when Craig awakens to nab him. With their rent money stolen and their apartment in shambles, Craig and Day-Day take on jobs as security guards at a nearby strip mall where their fathers share ownership in a Bar-B-Q restaurant. The fact that their landlady's cruel and horny son Damon (Terry Crews - "Training Day") has just been released from prison gives the duo special impetus to make enough money to pay their rent by the end of the day. But just when the movie's high jinx should shift into high gear, things back-pedal into a series of uninspired comic bits that barely provoke any momentum, comic or otherwise. When the overzealous Day-Day cracks down on a group of older women singing Christmas carols in front of the mall's liquor store, a group of angry thugs soon come

seeking revenge against the lowly security guards. There's too much distance between the context of the attempted comedy. Instead of seeing a bunch of tough guys chasing the harmless Craig and Day-Day, the bit could easily have turned into a genuinely funny episode if the older women themselves were doing the chasing with their canes and umbrellas flying. One major problem is that we never get to see the main characters fully engaged in any escalating comedic situation. All of the comedy comes from different angles and in tiny doses that don't snowball to greater effect. It's a major flaw in the writing that the audience is never given a chance to savor any surprises from these two likable guys who obviously have something funny to say and some wacky ideas about taking action. "Friday After Next" is an ineffective attempt at an Urban Christmas Comedy because it neglects the aspects of "comedy" and "Christmas" in the interest of remaining "urban." Especially because the setting is sunny Los Angeles, the filmmakers needed to go to extremes to give the movie an atmosphere of late December's holiday cheer. One potentially funny shoplifting scene takes place in a suspiciously empty clothing store named "Pimp N' Ho's," run by Money Mike (Katt Williams) and his charming assistant Donna (K.D. Aubert) - who looks like a perfect black version of Cameron Diaz. It's the one time in the story when Craig and Day-Day prove their mettle as security guards, but it happens with so little fanfare that you barely notice their victory. The movie reaches its pinnacle of humor near the end when Craig and Day-Day have defaulted from making their rent money as security guards to throw a rent party instead. The height challenged Money Mike finds himself locked in Craig's and Day-Day's bathroom as the singular object of desire for the prisonminded Damon. Granted the humor will be more effecting for male members of the audience, but the comedy is pure and visceral. It's the one time in the movie where the humor hits a sustained high note.

Soon he, too begins to see things, including a vision of his dead wife. Stars George Clooney. TREASURE PLANET - (PG13) - Animation - This film follows fifteen-year-old Jim Hawkin's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon. Befriended by the ship's charismatic cyborg (part man, part machine) cook John Silver, Jim blossoms under his guidance, and shows the makings of a fine spacer as he and the alien crew battle supernovas, black holes and ferocious space storms. But even greater dangers lie ahead when Jim discovers that his trusted friend Silver is actually a scheming pirate with mutiny in mind. Confronted with a betrayal that cuts deep into his soul, Jim is transformed from boy to man as he finds the strength to face down the mutineers and discovers a "treasure" greater than he had ever imagined.

Now Showing DIE ANOTHER DAY - (PG13) - Action/Adventure James Bond returns with the twentieth installment in the superspy series of adventures. From Hong Kong to Cuba to London, Bond circles the world in his quest to unmask a traitor and prevent a catastrophic war. On his way, he crosses paths with Jinx (Berry) and Miranda Frost (Pike), who will play vital roles in the adventure. British special agent James Bond (Brosnan) teams up with an American spy codenamed Jinx (Berry) to take on a North Korean leader (Yune), who uses an experimental "facial mutation" device that allows him to take on new appearances... (turning into Stephens) until it goes wrong, leaving his face half mutilated. The opening of the film (filmed on Maui last January!) involves James Bond as an escaping prisoner of war, involving surfing and water skiing.

FILM

8 MILE - (R) - Drama - Based loosely on the life of Marshall Mathers, aka “Eminem”, about an inner-city youth in Detroit searching for his own voice...The people of Detroit know 8 Mile as the city limit, a border, a boundary. It is also a psychological dividing line that separates Jimmy Smith Jr. (Eminem) from where and who he wants to be. 8 Mile is a provocative fictional examination of a critical week in Jimmy's life, starring multi-platinum recording artist Eminem in his first leading role in a feature film, along with Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential) as Jimmy's mother, Mekhi Phifer (0, Shaft), Brittany Murphy (Don't Say A Word) and Eugene Byrd (Dead Man). THE EMPEROR’S CLUB - (PG13) - Comedy Academy Award winner Kevin Kline stars as Arthur Hundert, a dedicated and inspiring Classics professor who has devoted his life to teaching at an elite boys' prep school. When a new student, Sedgewick Bell, the headstrong son of a powerful senator, joins his class, Mr. Hundert's life is inexorably altered. It is a clash of wills and personalities as these two people seemingly battle for the hearts and souls of the other students at St. Benedictus. Spanning 20 years, the story resumes when Bell, now a powerful and influential businessman, brings the retired professor back into his life and world. At a reunion of his students, Hundert is faced with the fear that he may have failed the most important challenge of his life - to have been a great teacher. FRIDA - (R) - Drama/Romance - Chronicles the life Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) shared openly and unflinchingly with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) as this controversial couple took the art world by storm. This film tells the true story of Mexican painter and 20th century icon Frida Kahlo (Hayek), focusing on her often rocky relationship with husband Diego Rivera (Molina), and their place in Mexican society. Included in the mix will be David Siqueiros (Banderas), Rivera's rival in the Mexican art world, Tina Modotti (Judd), a famed Italian photographer, and Nelson Rockefeller (Norton), who famously contracted Rivera to paint the lobby mural of Rockefeller Center, only to renege because it included a portrait of Lenin. Others in their social circle included Russian leader and refugee Leon Trotsky (Rush) (soon before Stalin had him assassinated there), muralist Jean Charlot, painter Pablo O'Higgins, composer Silvestre Revueltas, and photographer Edward Weston. In addition to being a great artist, Frida Kahlo was also a bisexual and a communist, struggling with an abusive husband, a life of wracking pain following a trolley accident, the amputation of a leg, and finally, drug and alcohol abuse that killed her at age 47. FRIDAY AFTER NEXT - (R) - Comedy - The third installment in the successful Friday series, Friday After Next takes place during the Christmas season back in the old neighborhood where it all began. Although cousins Craig (Ice Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) have left behind the security of living with their parents, the rundown apartment they now share is filled with all the accoutrements and spirit of the holiday season. Everything is idyllic…until a ghetto Santa Claus breaks in and steals their Christmas presents and anything else he can stuff into his sack, including the rent money hidden in their stereo speakers. Faced with the harsh reality of a Christmas without presents and the threat of eviction if rent is not paid by day's end, their only hope of scoring some quick cash leads them to the local strip mall where they land jobs as unarmed security guards. In the process, Craig and Day-Day learn some comic lessons about the true meaning of the holiday season. HALF PAST DEAD - (R) - Action/Adventure - A criminal mastermind infiltrates a high-security prison to find an inmate who knows the whereabouts of $200 million in gold, while an undercover FBI agent is sent in to stop his plans. Stars Steven Seagal, Morris Chestnut and Ja Rule. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS - (PG) - Action/Adventure - While in his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry is confronted by strange voices that seem to eminate from the walls, a secret that relates to a historic mystery tied to House Slytherin. THE RING - (PG13) - Suspense/Thriller - A journalist uncovers a mysterious videotape that kills anyone who watches it within 7 days. A remake of the popular Japanese film Ringu (1998). Stars Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson. THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 - (G) - Comedy - Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has been Santa Claus for the past eight years, but his life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers that he has to marry or else lose his reign as old St. Nick forever.

My girlfriend and I live in different states. When we started our relationship we both knew that long distance would be hard. We were going good for a while, but the other day, she said she thought we should start dating other people "to experience life." She reassured me that "we are going to be together," but we can date others in the meantime. I'm completely lost. I care about her a lot, and she says she still cares about me, but I don't understand how dating other people will help. Far Alarm

KOZMICBREEZE ARIES: Give thanks for travel and the exotic. You're involved with a real adventure. The new moon on the 3rd highlights foreign cultures, long distance journeys and higher education matters. Legal issues should move in your favor. Deep learning begins. TAURUS: Blood rushes to your head as emotional tests both delightful and dreadful invade your life. You don't like change. Yet, you must adjust to the things that are beyond your control with a positive attitude. Sunday and Monday are perfect for friendly gatherings. GEMINI: Move out of solitude and into the presence of people. The new moon on Tuesday brings a sense of balance and harmony. Your perspective is needed. The weekend brings opportunities for creative expression. Your concerns will be shared. CANCER: Exalt your artistic abilities or inclinations. If you can't honor your own creative processes, honor the creative processes of a child, another artist, or a lover. Much of this week revolves around service, health and charitable causes as the new moon dictates. LEO: Have that costume party that you weren’t able to get into on Halloween. Celebrating your home and family is in order. It will be easy to have a good time as the new moon ushers in a period of love and playfulness. You have some creative ideas that are worthwhile. VIRGO: Plunge into the depths of your imagination. Think of how things might have been for your ancestors 1,000 years ago. The new moon promotes dreams and psychic sensibilities. Giving compliments to parents and elders will take the sting out of family reunions. LIBRA: Get acquainted with your local environment. Be handy with a pen to take down

A HAM AND A WOMAN There's this gorgeous girl in grad school with me who says she loves hanging around me because I make her laugh so hard she practically passes out. She has a boyfriend of three months whom, she tells everyone, is always putting her down. Would it be a mistake to ask her to let the put-down guy go in favor of a guy whose obnoxiousness she finds amusing? Stand-Up Guy Rodney Dangerfield is pretty funny, too, but it's unlikely your dream girl is fantasizing about him while she's in bed with her mean boyfriend - and chances are, that isn't because her thoughts are already crowded with dirty pictures of Gilbert Gottfried and Bobcat Goldthwait. Women might say they want a guy who makes them laugh, but that's not all they want. Just because you fail to see the allure of cruelty, debasement, and displaced rage doesn’t mean they’re without appeal to her. In other words, there's a reason she's with this guy, and it isn't because you have yet to pop up to ask her to ditch him. Got a problem? Write Amy Alkon, 171 Pier Ave, #280, Santa Monica, CA 90405, or e-mail AdviceAmy@aol.com (www.advicegoddess.com)

BY KOZMIC KEV notes or to write some poetry. The new moon gives you a sense of social grace and personal mobility. The moon in your sign will give you a pleasant After-Thanksgiving. SCORPIO: It's time to build your personal finances. The new moon shows your emotional attachment to material goods. Your vitality is restored as Mars moves into Scorpio on December 1st. Stay relaxed and easy-going, and what you desire will come to you. SAGITTARIUS: Being the luckiest sign in the zodiac you seldom run out of things to be thankful for. The new moon brings a renewal and a reawakening. Your dreams are of romance and action. Celebrate with exotic, multi-cultural themes. Travel looks good. CAPRICORN: Be aware of endings. Things fall apart when your year is about to close. Write thank-you notes to people that have done you favors. The new moon opens your psychic senses and gives you a view of the people you have karma with. AQUARIUS: I guess the worst thing about this time of year is that you can only be at one place at a time. The good news is that the new moon puts more dazzle in your social life. You feel a sense of freedom. You will receive recognition for your talents and skills. PISCES: There's no place to hide. Everyone can see what you're doing and that may not be a bad thing. Ulterior motives won't serve you. The new moon shows you your career strengths and challenges. Real leadership requires that you can empathize with the followers. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Britney Spears 12/2/81, Woody Allen 12/1/35 I'm Thankful for MauiTime! E-mail kozmickev@sunset.net

Life experience comes in many forms. Some people join the army, other people hike out into nature, and other people, like your girlfriend, take a consumer products approach -- volunteering to check whether mattress manufacturers are telling the truth about their warranties. All the guys she'll be testing those bedsprings with, they're just temporary. Whew, bet that makes you feel good. Plus, she hasn't definitively told you it's over -- probably because she'll hear a lot less kicking and screaming if she lets you cling to the hope that it's not. Whenever she's out with somebody else, just try to remember that you're supposed to be her forever guy...or, you will be -- just as soon as she gets to the end of that long line of conveniently located

temps, or reduces her Sealy Posturepedic to a fine powder -- whichever comes first.
