LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR ANTI ISM To adress the actuality and brutality of the present world madness we must loosen the constraints of categorization. Particularly the notion that a creitic is immediately guilty of an anti-ism. If a child misbehaves and is admonished by his mother, few would accuse her of anti-childism. Yet to criticize the present rampage of anti-terrorist terrorism is construed as anti-Americanism or anti-Semitism as though it were a disease or sort of cult. The fact is that the madness of the American government and at least some of its branches and agencies are deserving of censure, and the implication by the media that all critics are being Anti Ism is to marginalize humanity. Inside the pale however, lies the state of Israel which in its creation had supplanted, brutalized and disenfranchised the indigenous Semitic Palestinian population. The term applied to criticism of the actions of this state is usually referred to as ‘antiSemitism.’ This term implies that the critic approves of the holocaust during which the Western governments went about making money “placidly amongst the noise and haste,” ignoring and even abetting their fate. Such is the conven-
ience of Ism. There is little notice given to the idea that “anti-Semitism” is merely expressed disgust at the callous brutality of the Israeli government. The brutalization of Palestinians by the former victims is, to say the least, ironic, especially when holocaust day was recently recognized. To decry this barbarism labels one as “pro Palestinian”. Ism, while a convenient labeling device can also be confusing to the unwary. For example, when the people protest the Orwellian games of the present monetary system, the categorically minded ‘journalists’ and political ‘pundits’ are terribly confused. It is incomprehensible to them that the same person could be at once a proponent of environmentalism and pacifism, for the system would die without scapegoats. That a president would go up in flames without a helpless enemy upon which to wage war is only one example of the havoc to be reached by peace. The issue is not anti-Bushism or antiAmericanism. It is an expression of disgust that the power of the “civilized” world has no regard for human life or rights. Possessors of the most efficient murder machines rule. T. White, Lahaina

The Queen's nurses' strike is not about Paid Time Off (combined vacation and sick leave) alone. It is a very complex and inter-related problem. The other very important issues that have not been addressed in the "last and best final offer" are issues of patient safety in relation to nursing units being staffed with overtime nurses. There is documented research on the efficiency of nurses after 12 hours. Patient safety is compromised when nurses work greater than 12 hours. Why are nurses having to work Overtime (OT)? It is less costly to pay OT than to hire another employee and have to pay the benefits. Why is there an alleged excessive level of sick calls at Queen's? Exhaustion leads to a compromised immune system. Nurses get sick because they aren't getting enough rest. In addition, the hazardous working conditions, which are inherent in the profession, communicable and deadly diseases and back injuries (and numerous other types of potential injuries), must not be swept under the rug. A hospital is a hazardous place to work. If OT was significantly reduced to an occasional occurrence rather than the norm, sick calls would more than likely also drop. A study would provide the evidence needed to show if the two (OT and excessive sick calls) are related. The hospital management refused to consider conducting a study.
Queen's must take responsibility for creating the sick call problem that exists there or at least be willing acknowledge that there is possibly a correlation and investigate it. The hospital administration must be held accountable! The wages in Hawaii have been kept low. There has not been a significant increase in nurses’ wages in years. Hawaii's wage scale does not attract experienced nurses because it does not compensate the nurse for her or his experience. In their proposal, Queen's increased start rates for new grads by 25%. They would not even consider changing from the "Job Rate" wage model, only found here in Hawaii, to the incremental model that is based on the level of experience. It is cheaper to pay for a new grad than it is for an experienced nurse. It is also dangerous to have a novice level workforce without the balance of experienced professionals. The contract proposal from Queen's will not help the staffing shortage that DOES exist at Queen's. We are in a period of an international nursing shortage. Hawaii is just beginning to experience it. Just as on the mainland, the Hawaii nursing community is aging. The average age of the Hawaii nurses is in their late 40s. The baby-boomers are pushing retirement. Yet, the numbers of nursing graduates are not equal to the number of retirees. By Mary Hackney, RN, Oahu

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON
WHEN GOOD SPORTS GO BAD It seems like every time you read about youth violence, the entertainment industry gets the blame. Whether it’s video games, movies, or music, it’s always that side of entertainment that is responsible for kids hurting kids. But what about sports? This country has long been obsessed with athletics, and since good sportsmanship has always been a driving force behind athletics, this should be a good thing. It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game, right? However, in light of some recent occurrences both on the field and off, I think it’s time we give athletics some credit for making our nation a little more aggressive with each successive generation. First and foremost we had the UHCincinnati football game. Both sides naturally pointed the blame finger at each other and it was pretty hard to tell who was truly at fault for the post-game chaos, but the fact that police had to resort to using pepper spray on students shows that good sportsmanship has begun to wobble. We also had a confrontation between Tampa Bay Buccaneer Warren Sapp and Green Bay head coach Mike Sherman on the field after the game. Sherman took umbrage at a hit that Sapp laid on one of his lineman - a hit that, while unnecessary, was completely legal. The post-game confrontation was actually pretty minor but what followed was not. The offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers actually placed a phone call to the defensive line coach for the Buccaneers and told him that Sapp would be targeted for retribution in their rematch. And these guys are supposed to represent the professionals among us? What is some kid who ques-
tions the validity of another player’s hit supposed to think? That retribution is justified because the guys in the NFL do it? We also recently had a post-game incident following the Miami (OH) vs. Marshall football game that Miami thought it should have won. A Marshall fan rushed the field and began taunting players and coaches, at which point one of the defensive coaches decked the fan, sending him to the hospital with a concussion. And it didn’t stop there. Each team has a set of coach’s boxes above the field from where they can call the plays. After the game, the Miami coaches trashed the visiting coach’s box because they feel they should have won the game. And these guys are supposed to be teaching our kids? But one of the best has to be the astronomically stupid New Jersey man who sued a junior hockey league that his son played in because, get this, his son was not voted the MVP. The man, citing his son’s statistics as the league’s highest goal scorer, said that upon losing the MVP, his son also lost all desire to play the game and therefore he, the father, deserved a $200,000 compensatory fee. This country worships its athletes and its athletics. And usually for good reason. Athletics provide for mental and physical health and are just plain fun. But when good sports go bad and in the process earn major national exposure, young kids that are just now formulating the philosophies that will govern their future lives are going to believe that poor sportsmanship is the norm. We can create all the ratings systems we want to protect our kids against internet porn or video game violence, but at least that stuff is obviously fake. What’s going to happen to us when the behavior displayed by the most revered people in our society every weekend trumps that of the so-called violent entertainment industry?

To the asshole attorney on the back cover of the new phone book that just came out – do you really think a picture of a bunch of checks from the City and County of Honolulu will really attract our business? Whose money do you think that is? It’s our money and because of jerks like you we have to pay higher taxes, higher insurance, and be blocked from public and private lands because someone might sue if they get hurt. People like you are a big part of what’s wrong with this country – you enable people to blame the other guy and shirk responsibility for their own actions. A classic example is the woman who got bitten by the shark last week – she has everyone in a panic about being sued because “she wasn’t warned that there could be sharks in the ocean”. She’ll probably look at the back cover of the phone book and say “this bald asshole can sue the County, the State, the Hotel, and the pool attendant and score me one of those $2,000,000 checks”. Hell, maybe she can even sue her parents for not giving her the common sense to know an act of God when it’s biting her on the shoulder! Thanks 1.6 million!

What Nurses Need Nurses are tired of being stuck in the middle between costs versus patient care. Nurses are tired of having no professional autonomy in their practice. Nurses are continuously told by managers, directors, and CEOs that they don't see the total picture. However, the nurse is educated and skilled to deliver safe patient care from a holistic nursing model. Maybe it isn't us who have a problem seeing the total picture, but everyone else the insurance companies, government agencies, and hospital managements. Hospitals will spend millions in high-priced, hi-technology equipment; manipulated will a promise of decreased cost and improved patient care. Comparatively, hospitals have invested little to attract and retain nurses locally with factional wage increases and a retirement package that has no medical coverage. It's the sad truth that nurses spend their life’s caring for others wondering whether they will be able to afford the same safe patient care their strike threat is trying to defend. It's no wonder that with such incentives that few are choosing the profession of nursing as a career. So with the present aging workforce of nurses who are leaving for more favorable work conditions, who will replace them? As an intensive care nurse with over 10 years experience in Hawaii, I'm so tired of "doing so much, with so little, for so long" with no voice or control over my own profession. I echo the above quote which I read back in 1986 when I first entered nursing; it’s still true today regarding what is expected of a nurse. The nurse working collaboratively with physicians and other health care professionals becomes the axle that allows the wheels of health care to turn. The nurse is the jack of all trades, requiring a diverse and broad knowledge base to efficiently monitor, assess, and organize the many laboratory, diagnostic, and procedural therapies their patients require as directed by a physician. Many times the nurse is the only consistent link between a doctor, the patient and their families to exchange and gather information. This relationship brings with it increased accountability and liability but little autonomy. The nurse assumes this fiduciary relationship to ensure consistency in delivering safe patient care. If the nurse knowingly were to administer or allow an inappropriate medication, dose, or procedure to occur that resulted in causing patient harm; negligence and malpractice charges may found. Of course, the flip side is also true; if the nurse fails or
6

delays an appropriate physician order the same charges may ensue. So a high degree of diligence is required of the nurse to maintain safe patient care. Therefore, anything that may delay or encumber the nursing care may jeopardize patient safety. Logically, an increase in nursing staff would increase nursing care thereby increasing patient safety. However, hospital administrators contend that due to decreasing reimbursements by regulatory agencies coupled with increased health care expenses warrant cutting labor costs. This is a common business practice adopted by hospitals since the inception of the Balanced Budget Act (BBA) which resulted in a staffing shortage of nurses compounded further by a national nursing shortage. Simply put there were less nurses to deliver care which caused increased patient to nurse ratio workloads. Numerous nursing studies have shown decreased nursing care increases negative patient outcomes and increased patient lengths of stay (LOS) which increase hospital costs. The recent JAMA (Journal of American Medial Association) study featured in our local press (10/23/02) showed a 30% mortality rate when a nurse's patient load increased to 8 patients (phone 637-9822 for copy). That relates to 3 patient deaths for every 10 admissions to a hospital due to preventable complications because a nurse couldn't ensure safe patient care. The study also showed increased nurse job dissatisfaction with increased patient to nurse ratios leading to increased burn out rates. Obviously, common business practices don't work when applied to the health care industry. The nurse is a vital member of health care whose skills once eliminated; increase hospital costs with severe consequences to the well-being and safety of patients. The concept of hospital care evolved around people caring for the ill and less fortunate in monasteries. Hospital administrators need to recognize they don't have a cash flow problem but a health care delivery problem. The problem will not be resolved through traditional business practices, but with creative critical thinking in close collaboration with health care professionals within your organization which involves a vital member, the nurse at the bedside. Critics may view this editorial as a way to resolve the issues through the media. But, as a nurse I'm always asked by patients or their families to help clarify or educate them in complex health issues so they can reach they own health care decisions. I'm just one nurse amongst hundreds locally who are crying out for professional autonomy and collaboration, to help others to understand why it's important to recruit and retain more nurses who can continue to deliver safe patient care.

Queens Nurses Vote to Reject Contract Offer Strike Commences Spurred on by the controversy over the Queen’s Medical Center’s management's last and final offer, Registered Nurses from Queens “turned out in droves” to cast their ballots on the contract package. Again as with Kuakini and St. Francis hospitals only a few hours before, Queen’s nurses expressed their mandate “by an overwhelming margin,” to reject the offer. Observers who had heard comments from registered nurses coming in to vote between 6 AM and 6 PM indicated that their decisions were based on staffing problems, the onerous paid time off (PTO) system (combined vacation and sick leave), changed retirement benefits, and the overall compensation package which nurses doubted would keep enough RNs at Queen’s Hospital providing safe care. HNA OCB Director, Sue Scheider said, “Queens nurses consider this vote to literally be their marching orders, unless management provides an alternative offer that would produce a tentative agreement. Absent such a last-minute change, Queen’s nurses will be joining their colleagues from Kuakini, and St. Francis on the picket lines beginning Tuesday, December 3, 2002 first thing in the morning” Scheider also said, "We know that other HNA nurses who are not working will also show up to support their brothers and sisters on the picket lines.” HNA collective bargaining representatives from Queen’s left the hospital campus shortly after seven PM to hold a press conference at the Father

Gypsy Jazz,
By Christy Miles
The word gypsy conjures up stereotypical images of a group of unbathed, unshorn people who travel together from place to place, never settling for long. On their way to wherever they are traveling, they rob people, drink lots of booze, and play music around a huge bonfire. The part about music is probably the only part of the stereotype that rings true. Music was the corner stone of the Gypsies’ lives. Gypsy Jazz was introduced to the world by the Gypsies and that genre of music is still played today. Local musician Tom Conway is not what you would call a Gypsy. Instead of wandering with a herd of people in a wagon, he drives a car. He also bathes, has short hair, wears sneakers, shorts, and t-shirts. The only thing Conway has in common with the Gypsies is that he can play the guitar like he was raised with them in Europe. Conway has just released his first CD, entitled “Hot Gypsy Nights”. Thirteen cover songs have been masterfully ensembled on the record with the help of three other talented musicians, Marcus Johnson, Willy Wainwright, and Gene Argel. The upbeat music can take anyone back to the days of the Gypsies, but now, Conway is trying to introduce it to Maui, his way. “This genre of music takes everything I have to be good at it,” Conway said. “I am striving to be as good as those European players.” While Conway was growing up in the Detroit, Michigan area, his musical influences were Jimmy Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, and the Beetles, PHOTOS: SEAN M. Maui Style! Tom Conway’s Journey not European Gypsy musicians. While he took music lessons, he was a horrible student because his instructor wasn’t teaching him the style of music he was interested in. Needless to say, he continued to practice guitar to prepare him for the road that lay ahead of him. In 1977, Conway moved to Maui, then moved away and then came back for the last time to call Maui his home. In 1984, he met a local guitar player, Bo Shores. Shores played Conway a tape of a genius guitar player named Jorge Strunz of Strunz & Farah. Upon hearing the tape, Conway decided then and there that he wanted to move to California and study vigorously with Strunz. “In my mind, Jorge Strunz is one of the best guitar players in the world,” Conway said. “He had a profound impact on me.” At the time, Strunz was not internationally known like he is today. He had a limited amount of students and Conway was fortunate enough to study with him for a year and a half. Strunz exposed Conway to Gypsy Jazz and since his days with him, Conway has been striving to be the best he can be to achieve the sound of Gypsy Jazz. One of Conway’s direct Gypsy influences is a man named Django Reinhardt from Europe. In the early 40’s, Reinhardt played music that set the pace for most Gypsy Jazz musicians today. He took American Big Band music of the day, which

was mostly horns, and turned it into an acoustic version. Three guitars, an upright bass and a violin replaced the horns. Reinhardt then became internationally known. Conway said Reinhardt had an intense impact on guitar players and people who like that style of music. Now, after Reinhardt’s death, there is an entire legion of Gypsy guitar players who are carrying on the tradition of his style and who are furthering it to this day. “Music is like a language,” Conway said. “It has a certain vocabulary and I had to dissect Gypsy Jazz and really listen to it to get it down.” As Conway practiced his guitar to achieve fluent Gypsy status, he found it hard to come by records with the Gypsy style. Most of the great musicians are located in Europe. With the help of modern technology, Conway clicked on Amazon. Com and found Gypsy Jazz Musicians. One year ago, while Conway was practicing and studying the European greats, he was introduced to violin player Willy Wainwright. Willy had just moved to Maui from Switzerland. At that time, Conway was transcribing countless hours of music and didn’t know of anyone who could play it, who was deeply involved with the style. To Conway’s delight, Wainwright knew all of the music that Conway

was practicing. They were on the same wavelength and began working on a bunch of tunes. Their group was far from complete. Wainwright hooked up with a local bass player, Marcus Johnson. Marcus indicated a desire to play music with them. The group was finally complete. The three of them practiced and practiced. Conway wanted to record the band and he invested all of his money in doing so. The CD was recorded at Emerald Studios in Paia, and Conway had it pressed on the mainland. Scott Johnson designed the graphics for the CD cover and Sean M. Hower shot the photos. Gene Argel plays the grand piano on three of the songs. He has been on the Maui music scene for many years. They have since added rhythm guitarist Phil Benoit to the lineup and the band is called ‘Gypsy Pacific’. The final result is a CD with lots of energy. Conway said that all of the musicians on the CD are physical and aggressive players. Gypsy Jazz is an intense genre of music to play, according to Conway. In order for the music to be heard after the CD was released, Conway needed an outlet in Maui. That outlet came in the form of an angel for Conway. Mana’o Radio in Wailuku, FM station 91.5, features local, independent musicians who are trying to receive recognition for their hard work.

Conway walked into the studio and presented his CD to Bill Best, one of the DJ’s at the station. Best played the CD immediately and Conway was put on the air to talk about the CD. “I am so grateful for the people at Mana’o Radio,” Conway said. “They play my CD still and I have had people recognize the group because of Mana’o Radio.” With the release of his CD, Conway hasn’t quit his day job. He teaches guitar lessons at Bounty Music on the Hana Highway in Kahului. He doesn’t teach like his old guitar teacher. Conway lets his students tell him what they are interested in. From there, his students are taught exactly what they want. It keeps them interested and it keeps them practicing, Conway said. Lessons are $18 per half-hour. Conway said if someone is hungry for the music, they will take the time for instruction and practice to become a great guitar player. You can call for lessons with Tom at Bounty Music at 871-1141. Tom Conway’s, “Hot Gypsy Nights” can be purchased at Borders, Tropical Music, Maui Music, Amazon.com, and CD Baby. He is currently composing 13 original Gypsy Jazz songs for his next CD. “I want to get people exposed to this music,” Conway said. “I also want to put Maui on the map for Gypsy Jazz.”

JUHA: POLARI (Agitprop, www.juhamusic.com) Tough to define as any certain genre, the closest I can come to describing this music is alternative hip hop with Mid-Eastern and punk rock influences. Based in Haiku, Maui, Juha is composed of two MC's, Ghalib and his male lover, Jojoboy, and producer/arranger Adam Capriccio. While Jojoboy handles most of the rapping, Ghalib joins in at points with his own rapping as well as Palestinian singing, and Adam provides the majority of the meticulously programmed and eclectic music. Even though these guys are gay, their sound is not wussy at all. In fact, with their politically and socially charged lyrics, vibrant delivery, and busy beats, I find Polari to be an endlessly creative and engaging album. [The Mole] Their last show, Orange was the best show that I have seen by any local artist, and the album does a great job of translating that energy. They Rock. [Tang Li Wheebs]

SPIRIT
Sigur Rós' new album is another one of "those" CD releases. No real album title, no song titles, no liner notes and no lyrics (but definitely graced with vocals). Rather vague with pretty packaging. Musically it bears more relation to their awesome second album Ágætis Byrjun, than their confusing debut Von., but with a bit more of a live band feel this time around. It is still beautiful and floaty, but for some reason this album doesn't grab me as much as their last release did. It seems to be a bit more homogenous and feel like one long song rather than eight separate pieces. Even with its flaws, ( ) is much better than the fodder that seems to pass for music lately. I will give this one a bit more time. [Tang Li Wheebs] I think this is well done, but it's a little too slow and mellow for my tastes. [The Mole]

Dalek raps over really noisy, industrial hip-hop beats. Produced by himself, along with Oktopus and Still, the music on this album is dramatic, dark, loud, and beautiful. Dalek's gruff and serious delivery is a perfect complement to the gritty soundscapes. The overall atmosphere is made complete with darkly poetic, often angry, and boastful lyrics. This album would be perfect to play while walking through a foggy ghetto or something, but it also provides a nice contrast here in sunny Maui. [The Mole] Another great Ipecac release, well worth a listen. Creative and smart. [Tang Li Wheebs]
RUINS: TZOMBORGHA (Ipecac, www.ipecac.com) Japan's Ruins make a lot of sound for just a bass player, Hisahhi Sasaki, and a drummer/vocalist, Tatsuya Yoshida, and you will swear that much more is coming out of your speakers. Sonically they touch on John Zorn, Mr. Bungle, King Crimson, Primus and the Boredoms. Vocally it's free of lyrics and all over the place in an erratic, crazy style. Heavy and powerful, with medleys of both Black Sabbath and Mahavishnu Orchestra songs, Tzomborgha is a quirky, interesting ride. [Tang Li Wheebs] This is some pretty screwed up "music". I don't think I'll listen to this often, but when I'm in a certain mood, I could enjoy it. [The Mole]
CIRCUS & FRIENDS: GANGSTAHZ FO GAWD (Champion Sound, www.sandboxautomatic.com) Circus, AKA Kid Zelda, leader and main feature of the Los Angelesbased Shapeshifters collective, has released this album of old 4-track tape recordings, but it sounds new and fresh enough that it could have been recorded today. Although the sound quality is lacking, it's not bad enough to outweigh the relentlessly creative music, energetic rapping, and zany/conscious lyrics. Circus' main appeal lies in his deep and melodic vocal delivery coupled with lyrics comprised of abstract pop culture word collages interspersed with brief social/spiritual commentary. Thumbs up. [The Mole] Mind-bending lyrics perfectly complemented by rough, homemade beats. I love him. Really. [Tang Li Wheebs]

Inga Kosak won the first World Extreme Ironing Championship in Munich in September, beating 80 contestants (from 10 countries), who are judged on the degree of difficulty they can create for themselves in order to iron. One ironed while bouncing on a trampoline, another while surfboarding on a river, and another hanging upside down from a tree. Enthusiasts have photos of themselves ironing in remote mountain locations, where power for the steam iron must come from a generator (or a very long extension cord). The activity's founder, Phil Shaw, says he does it because ironing itself is particularly boring.
In October, Australian serial killer Ivan Milat complained to a state commission, asking the equivalent of (U.S.) $22,000, for a violation of his human rights. Milat, serving seven life sentences for seven murders, had swallowed some razor blades in a 2001 incident and now complains that prison officials' releasing his X-rays to the media was an invasion of his privacy. (Milat had complained previously about the air quality in his cell.) -- In November, coroner Nigel Meadows of Plymouth, England, ruled that the 18-yearsdead corpse of Edwin MacKenzie (known to locals as Diogenes) was actually the personal property of the recently deceased artist Robert Lenkiewicz and thus should go to Lenkiewicz's estate. MacKenzie was Lenkiewicz's helper for many years, and when he died without heirs, Lenkiewicz took possession of the body, had it embalmed, and used it in various art projects, and Lenkiewicz's executor is said to be considering using it in a memorial display of the artist's work. In October, Virgin Atlantic Airways agreed to pay passenger Barbara Hewson the equivalent of (U.S.) $20,000 for injuries she suffered on an 11-hour flight when an obese woman sat in the seat next to her and apparently crushed part of her body. Hewson said the squashing caused a blood clot in her chest, torn leg muscles and acute sciatica, requiring her to be bedridden for a month.
DEMOCRACY IN ACTION Mike Rucker, running for county commissioner in Tallahassee, Fla., apologized for urinating in a voter's yard in October, attributing it to a prostate problem and not anger that the voter had moments earlier refused to post Rucker's campaign sign. And Republican Lamar Alexander, running for the U.S. Senate in Tennessee, reportedly turned a hand-shaking opportunity into a hand-squeezing contest with an opposition voter who had mischievously slipped Alexander a Democratic brochure in Dickson, Tenn., in October. And Makinka Moye, running for city supervisor in San Francisco, was revealed by the Bay Area Reporter in September to have been arrested earlier this year for bludgeoning and butchering a goat on a vacant lot near a city recreation center. (Alexander won; Rucker and Moye lost.)
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Clothing Trends (from an October Wall Street Journal dispatch from Seoul): An aloe vera bra and underwear set to continually lubricate the skin for up to 40 washings (from Triumph International in the UK); menstrual-pain-reducing pants (from the B.L. Korea Co.); Ki business suits, with charcoal and jade powder sewn into the armpits and crotch, to block computer-screen radiation and boost energy (from Cheil Industries Inc.); and "yellow earth" boxer shorts, with a sewn-in special soil that supposedly emits infrared rays that cut odor and improve circulation (from Kolon Corp.). Michael Carroll, 19, of Norfolk County, England, won that country's national lottery (equivalent: (U.S.) $41 million) in November and said he hopes the money will be an incentive to overcome the life of petty crime he has led for the last several years (examples: drunk and disorderly, vandalizing a school bus, car theft, other theft, driving without a license). He cannot now celebrate his win at a pub, nor drive his new car, because judicial restrictions are still in force from his last sentence.

RECURRING THEMES News of the Weird reported in March that jail officials in Arapahoe County, Colo. In August, officials at the same Arapahoe jail inadvertently placed accused killer Edward Brown, 21, in the same cell with a witness against him, Martin Brewer, 21, whereupon Brown allegedly beat Brewer up, breaking his nose. (Also, in September, officials in Albuquerque inadvertently locked four men in a cell with what they thought was a sleeping man (but it was a woman); by the time they realized their error 30 minutes later, the woman had allegedly been raped.)

Andy Irons World Champion Surfer Hawaiian Andy Irons claimed the 2002 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) crown with an unsurpassable ratings lead. Surrounded by family, friends and media, the 24-year-old watched his nearest rival Luke Egan (Aus) bow out in the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Cup, thus losing any chance to bridge the impressive gap the heir apparent had already forged throughout the season. Irons, the 1998 ASP World Junior Champion, clinched his first WCT event the same year at Huntington Beach, California. He then secured another major victory two years later, again in California, but it was in 2002 the Hawaiian combined his ability with consistency. At the year’s second tournament, The Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Australia, he defeated 2000 world champion Sunny Garcia (Haw) for a ratings lead he never lost. From there he won the following tournament in Tahiti, his favorite venue at the infamous break of Teahupoo during the Billabong Pro. After a series of 17th place results, he broke the pattern with a runner-up finish at the Quiksilver Pro France, before claiming another title the following WCT in Spain, at the Billabong Pro. Coming into Hawaii the stage was already set for his seemingly inevitable crowning, though main rival Egan was never going to hand it to him freely. The Australian required a third place or higher finish at Sunset, and if achieved, the showdown would continue on into next week’s Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters. It wasn't to be. Despite losing his own quarterfinal match due to an interference call, Irons anxiously watched the following 35-minute decider. As
the crowd grew around him and time elapsed, Egan needed a 7.7 score. Within the final 10-seconds he caught a good ride and surfed it great, but the wave didn't offer enough and the announcers read out a 6.3. The siren sounded, cheers and screams were let loose, and Irons climbed on to the top of a truck and raised his arms. The race was over. Moments later, after his Kauai boys had carried him to the podium to the applause of all around, he joined the stage with ASP President/CEO Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew, who coincidently won his 1978 world title the same year Irons was born. Egan then walked over to congratulate the Hawaiian who was showered in champagne, before the following was said: "It's really a pleasure for me to be able to give world titles away," said Bartholomew. "Andy's had a great year so far. He's won three WCT events and still has Pipe to go. Please join me in congratulating the new ASP 2002 men's world champion - Andy Irons!" "There are a lot of emotions running through

me right now," began Irons. "It's just been an incredible year and I never thought I'd put one together like this. It's been an unreal ride and I can't believe it. I just want to thank all my friends for their support, as they're the best friends in the world. I want to thank my mom and dad for coming down... I have a lot of people to thank. All my sponsors of course, and I want to thank everyone for showing up today and my girlfriend Lisa. I'm just really thankful right now. "Winning Bells was a dream come true in itself," he continued. "Then Teahupoo right after that just topped off an incredible month. I've felt really good this year. I didn't make the stupid mistakes I used to. I've gotten a little older and hopefully I've learned from those mistakes. I'll probably make more mistakes, but as long as I keep learning from them, hopefully I'll keep winning contests and living the dream. "I've just got to say Luke's always been one of my favorite surfers," he added, of Egan. "I'm always down just to watch his heats ‘cause I love the way he surfs. I know he's going to win one. The guy ages and just gets sweeter every year. He's surfing better than ever and is incredible. I really take my hat off and have a lot of respect for him." Irons' father Phil, who has watched and nurtured both his famous sons' surfing careers, made the following comment after the emotional climax was achieved. "It was due," began the elder Irons. "He was focused the whole way. It's something the kid worked for since he was little. To do it here at home... I got on a flight this morning at 6am from Kauai to be here. He's set for life now. It's overwhelming." Egan, who has pushed Irons all the way, offered the following praise for the new world champion. "He's been the most complete surfer all year by far," conceded Egan. "I know I was right next to him, and from what I saw he ripped at Teahupoo, he ripped in Fiji, and then when it was tiny he was also one of the best surfers and that's what it takes to be world champ. He highly deserves what he got today."

2002 PERFORMANCE Andy dominated the year from the outset, posting back-to-back wins in Australia and then his favorite venue at Teahupoo, Tahiti, for a commanding ratings lead. He then locked in a runner-up finish in France, before claiming another victory the following tournament in Spain. He only entered one WQS event, but reached the final of the Vans Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa. His consistency and abundance of talent shone through in 2002, as the Hawaiian convincingly secured his maiden world title at the penultimate WCT at Sunset Beach.

Celebrate Happy Hour At THE BLUE LAGOON TROPICAL BAR & GRILL 3PM-9PM DAILY
Island Tacos Elegant gourmet dining is a sure sign of living well, but who’s got the cash to enjoy nine course meals and fine bottles of wine more than once in a week? Certainly not me. We need to feed ourselves two or three times a day and it’s not easy finding good, fast food to suit our busy lives. That’s why I’m glad to find people like Sam at Island Tacos in the Haiku Cannery, whose personal attention makes it one of the freshest, fastest, and tastiest meals around. Sam’s a brusquely friendly, grizzled mountain of a man. He operates out of a semi-permanent trailer set-up equipped with a wood fired half pipe grill and smoker. He’s got three items on his menu: fish tacos, beef tacos, and chicken tacos. A mini steam table keeps his meats warm and the flour tortillas are hot off the grill and stuffed with heaping piles of goodness as you order them. I love the simplicity of this operation. You step up and order your tacos, you see them made right in front of you, you visit the condiment cooler and then you eat it right on the spot. If you’re not quite as rude as I am, you can get out of the way of the people in line behind you and actual-
ly sit down at the picnic tables in front, probably built by Sam himself. The tacos are so good that I forget myself sometimes. Whether you choose fish, beef, or chicken you’ll get shredded cabbage, cheese, onion and whole, firm black beans in a grilled flour tortilla. These tacos are big, juicy, and a balanced meal all to themselves. Two is probably enough for most people. I squeezed in three, barely. At three dollars a taco that’s still a full meal for under ten bucks. There’s a baker’s dozen of hot sauces to choose from, and don’t forget the sour cream and the homemade salsa, another one of Sam’s own recipes. I get the feeling that over the years Sam decided for himself what a good taco should taste like and how it should be built. He only offers it one way, and that seems to be enough. He shares the belief with me that everyone puts their own touch on the things they do, and that it’s noticeable. No two cooks taste alike, even when preparing the same recipes. That’s why Sam’s there seven days a week, from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., making his tacos: he doesn’t trust anyone else’s touch. So next time you’re at the cannery in Haiku, treat yourself to some fresh, fast food that definitely ain’t no Taco Bell. And say hi to Sam too, he’ll be there.

WINE OF THE
WEEK
BY ANTHONY MOORE
Fox Creek Shiraz 99 McLaren Vale, Australia $19.99
This week’s wine is for those of you who are into rich, ripe, full-of-flavor wines. One who is willing to step up and expand their wine taste, and take it to the next level, beyond Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Why not? - it’s just wine! Fox Creek Shiraz comes from the coastal region of the McLaren Vale in South Australia and is a prime example of Australian Shiraz. It features a blend of 68% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is deliciously darkripe with flavors of blackberry, and has an earthy aroma. Syrah - or Shiraz as it is called in Australia - is the same grape just spelled differently. It is one of the classic varietals throughout the world. Syrah is similar to Cabernet Sauvignon in texture but expresses flavors of wildberry, smoke, earth and especially pepper and spice.

KAREE CARLUCCI
Na Mele O Maui Keeping Hawai’i Alive
In 1972, a group of like-minded business and community leaders came together to create an event that would attract visitors to Maui while contributing to the education of the community. This event would perpetuate Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage, instill a sense of pride in youth, and establish a scholarship fund with emphasis on Hawaiian music and arts, thereby ensuring that the Hawaiian culture (which was fragile at the time) would be kept alive for future generations. They created an event slogan: A Tribute to the Culture of the Hawaiian People. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Na Mele O Maui’s Student Song Competition, which showcases Hawaii’s language and heritage through the voices of Maui County students (Kindergarten through 12th grade). On Friday, December 6, the heart-warming song contest will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali. This year’s theme is He Wahine U`i (Beautiful Women), meaning the Contest songs chosen by the committee for each grade division to perform will reflect compositions about beautiful women. The Choice song that each classroom chooses to perform will be compositions about a Maui County ahupua`a (ancient land division) in which the school is located. For the first time in the history of the contest, several classes have decided to write their own songs which will be performed as the Choice song. All songs are sung in the Hawaiian language. Classroom groups from kindergarten through high school are judged on language proficiency, musical competence and interpretation, stage presence and all-around enthusiasm. A combination of scores for the two songs determines the winner in each grade division, and the overall winner of the entire competition. In addition to cash

awards, a four-string `ukulele is given to the first place winners, and the overall winner receives a coveted six-string Kamaka `ukulele presented by Sam Kamaka. The founders’ original goal was to have high school students sing Hawaiian songs in threepart harmony - and this has been achieved for several years now. Earlier this year, Na Mele O Maui, Inc. was honored with the prestigious Kahili Award for Events in the Hawai`i Visitors & Convention Bureau’s Keep It Hawai`i annual awards program (2002 winner). Hawaii’s Dept. of Education considers Na Mele O Maui to be a significant program as it encourages students of all ages to study the Hawaiian language and music. The Hawaiian language and/or music is not accessible to all students as an area of study in all schools, so Na Mele provides an opportunity for them to learn some Hawaiian as well as some music. From humble beginnings under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina, Na Mele O Maui has expanded over the past 30 years to include various
cultural components. The Emma Farden Sharpe Hula Festival was part of the event for about a decade (in fact, Auntie Emma was one of the originators of Na Mele). For the past five years, the High School Student Art Exhibition has become another component of the event. Winners are awarded cash and other prizes for first, second and third places in both Division I (Grades 9-10) and Division II (Grades 11-12). There is also a Na Mele O Maui Scholarship Fund, whose purpose is to provide financial assistance to students pursuing a college education in Hawaiian Studies, or other majors with an emphasis on Hawaiian culture, in a college or university within the State of Hawai`i. Akoni Akana, who is now the Executive Director of The Friends of Moku`ula, Inc. and a Hawaiian cultural specialist, was in one of the first participating student groups. Luana Kawa`a, now Hawaiian cultural adviser for The Westin Maui, and recently inducted in an ancient ceremony for the official title of Kumu Hula, was also a Na Mele O Maui participant in the early years, and is privileged to see her daughter, the next generation, sing in the competition. For more information, please call 808661-3271.
PICKS MERMEN 10pm Friday, at Casanova’s; Saturday at Mulligan’s. Guitarist & avid surfer (from scary and cold Ocean Beach, even!) Jim Thomas, Bassist Jennifer and Drummer Shig bring their ecclectic blend of surf rock from San Francisco, California. For over ten years, they’ve carefully formulated an intense, darkly ambient, yet undeniably forceful and inspiring, guitar-driven surf rock that critics have praised and appreciated every time they release an album. I was fortunate enough to catch their last show at Casanova’s a few months ago, and was amazed by the complexities and layers of sound that three musicians can achieve. If you love music, you deserve to have the unique experience of witnessing cohesive musicianship in pure resonant bliss...
LIVE MUSIC AT THE BEACH 5pm Saturday, at Paia Youth Center. Brought to you by the same guys who know a whole hell of a lot about music (see Difficult Listening, p.10), so it should be a damn good show. Featuring indie rockers Hinterlander and Body Holiday, along with an intriguing new brand of post hip hop Demune and The Mole w/Tang Li Wheebs. This is a free show for all ages. Not to be confused with mindless beach party keggers, this gig I deem Music for People Who Think.
3RD ANNUAL MAKAWAO HOLIDAY FESTIVAL 3pm Saturday. Upcountry Maui’s old cowboy town begins their festivities on Baldwin and Makawao Avenues with storytelling, a yo-yo demo, magic, face-painting, strolling carollers, and of course, ‘ol St. Nick himself. The paniolo parade begins at 5pm, along with the Seabury Hall Jazz Band and others. If you’re ready for the sweet charm of a small town already chalk-full of character putting on a holiday festival that has the potential for being over-the-top in aloha and Christmas cheer, by all means, get your mistletoed booty down to Makawao this weekend - and have some eggnog, too, dammit.

Flame-thrower Love The 20th Bond Movie Pulls Out All The Stops
more extreme transmogrification under DNA treatment that recasts him as Gustav Gravas (Toby Stephens), a British playboy and megalomaniac intent on world domination by way of a satellite that can direct the sun's rays into a beam of destructive light. The Clash song "London Calling" inaugurates Gravas' entrance with proper Punk pomp as the dastardly outlaw parachutes onto a London press conference with a giant British flag emblazoned on his parachute. The most concrete secret weapon in "Die Another Day" is Halle Berry, who has signed a three-movie spin-off deal for her character Jinx. It's easy to understand why when you see the way Berry purposefully wears Costume Designer Lindy Hemming's ("Topsy-Turvy) eyecatching clothes while going head-to-head with Bond as a female force of nature to make all others stand down. Apart from one disastrously defective special effects sequence, "Die Another Day" successfully raises the bar on a film series that continues to inspire imitators in an action genre that never quite equals its predecessor. Bond films are family movies that infuse liveliness into a world of cinema that would be severely lacking if they weren't around. The 20th installment is something special, and there's an old-fashioned sword fight between Bond and Gravas that's as intense as any battle sequence in the movies.
) Die Another Day ( Giant Hovercrafts, politically topical locations and an Aston Martin that becomes invisible, make up a few key ingredients in the meticulously constructed 20th installment to the longest running film franchise ever. James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) plants a fuse from a piece of his watch into a packet of "C4" explosive beneath a tray of diamonds that he will "exchange" for nuclear weapons in a meeting with a particularly dangerous group of North Koreans before the film's lush credit sequence even rolls. By the time Madonna's voice sings the film's title song over an ultra cool credit sequence, our Mr. Bond has already been captured and is shown suffering the worst tortures we've ever seen the double-0 agent endure under Madonna's computer assisted voice. As Pierce Brosnan has remarked in interview, "Die Another Day" is like one-and-a-half Bond films in one. For fans of the incredibly lavish series, "Die Another Day" is everything one could expect. For those new to the innumerable glories of James Bond, the movie is a gorgeous and exciting introduction to the stylized cinematic roller coaster ride that audiences have savored for the past 40 years. When a Cuban kingpin tells Bond that, "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter," it comes as an overdue politically incorrect punch line to a materialist gag that finds America dropping bombs wherever oil is to be found under a pretext of global "security." Indeed the very fact that part of the film was shot in Cuba, winks to the viewer that no holds are barred in the franchise's perpetual postmodern pokes at governments whose citizens can only be saved by one man. It's this
shrewd attention to digging inside of ideological details that gives the series its ridiculing nerve and steely charm. Far from the cold-war James Bond that Sean Connery represented so well from the series' debut in 1962 with "Dr. No," Brosnan's Bond must spend 14 months in a solitary jail cell before being traded back to the Brits as a useless shell of his former self. It's only after Bond escapes from a secured hospital room and proves himself by going renegade against an amoral DNAaltering doctor in Cuba that he's let back into the fold of British Intelligence. By this time, Bond has had the pleasure of meeting and bedding his female American assassin equivalent Jinx (Halle Berry "Monster's Ball"). Fans of the Bond movies will have a fine time catching myriad references to past films, as when Bond first views Jinx rising from the Cuban shoreline ala Honey Rider's (Ursula Andress) busty introduction in "Dr. No" – knife belt included. We get an especially amusing stroll down memory lane when Q (played dutifully by John Cleese in the role enlivened by the late Desmond Llewelyn) walks Bond through a room containing relics from his predecessor's adventures before introducing Bond to his new fullyequipped Aston Martin, along with his 20th wristwatch. Face-changing villains are another attraction to "Die Another Day." Rick Yune transforms from a GQ handsome Korean weapons warlord to a bald, blue-eyed madman named Zao with diamonds embedded in one side of his face. His brother undergoes an even

It is also a psychological dividing line that separates Jimmy Smith Jr. (Eminem) from where and who he wants to be. 8 Mile is a provocative fictional examination of a critical week in Jimmy's life, starring multi-platinum recording artist Eminem in his first leading role in a feature film, along with Kim Basinger (L.A. EXTREME OPS - (PG13) - Extreme sports take on a new meaning when a downhill gold medalist and two extreme snowboarders - who tackle everything from train rails to vertical ice - hit the Austrian slopes with a film crew to shoot a commercial for a high-tech digital video. But the already dangerous stunt - to outrun an avalanche and capture the spectacular feat on film proves to be even more perilous when the cameraman accidentally captures footage of terrorists hiding out in the mountains. Now the dream-team skiers and the daring film crew have a very different reason for setting off a manmade avalanche ... to save the world. FRIDA - (R) - Drama/Romance - This film tells the true story of Mexican painter and 20th century icon Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek), focusing on her often rocky relationship with husband Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), and their place in Mexican society. In addition to being a great artist, Frida Kahlo was also a bisexual and a communist, struggling with an abusive husband, a life of wracking pain following a trolley accident, the amputation of a leg, and finally, drug and alcohol abuse. FRIDAY AFTER NEXT - (R) - Comedy - The third installment in the successful Friday series, Friday After Next takes place during the Christmas season back in the old neighborhood where it all began. Cousins Craig (Ice Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) have left behind the security of living with their parents and everything is idyllic…until a ghetto Santa Claus breaks in and steals their Christmas presents and anything else he can stuff into his sack, including the rent money hidden in their stereo speakers. HALF PAST DEAD - (R) - Action/Adventure - A criminal mastermind infiltrates a high-security prison to find an inmate who knows the whereabouts of $200 million in gold, while an undercover FBI agent is sent in to stop his plans. Stars Steven Seagal, Morris Chestnut and Ja Rule. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS - (PG) - Action/Adventure - While in his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry is confronted by strange voices that seem to eminate from the walls, a secret that relates to a historic mystery tied to House Slytherin. THE RING - (PG13) - Suspense/Thriller - A journalist uncovers a mysterious videotape that kills anyone who watches it within 7 days. A remake of the popular Japanese film Ringu (1998). Stars Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson. THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 - (G) - Comedy - Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has been Santa Claus for the past eight years, but his life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers that he has to marry or else lose his reign as old St. Nick forever. SOLARIS - (PG13) - Science Fiction - Upon arrival at a seemingly abandoned space station called Solaris, a psychiatrist discovers that the station commander has been killed and strange visions have driven the crew insane. Soon he, too begins to see things, including a vision of his dead wife. Stars George Clooney. TREASURE PLANET - (PG13) - Animation - This film follows fifteen-year-old Jim Hawkin's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon. Befriended by the ship's charismatic cyborg (part man, part machine) cook John Silver, Jim blossoms under his guidance, and shows the makings of a fine spacer as he and the alien crew battle supernovas, black holes and ferocious space storms. WES CRAVEN PRESENTS: THEY - (PG13) Suspense/Thriller - A graduate student struggles to understand her terrible nightmares, and in the process, discovers that the terrors that haunted her as a child may be real - and coming after her.

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON
FAMILY TREE ROT I met this great woman, talked to her on the phone for hours, then took her out one Friday night. We spent five hours together, holding hands, but not kissing. I wanted to kiss her, but I felt she might not be ready. The following evening, I walked her to her dorm after a great date, and thought about kissing her, but the magnetic pull wasn’t there. She never returned my next call. She’ll be away all weekend. Should I e-mail her when she’s back? Call once a week? We both come from reputable families, have great job prospects, and already have friends in common. Now What? If Mini-Me isn’t doing a movie, maybe you can hire him to hide in the bushes by your date’s door and pop up with a cue card -- “Suck Face Now!” It’s the perfect way to be sure you pick just the right moment to show how hot you are for the girl’s...reputable family. And hubbahubba, how ‘bout them big...job prospects!? There is a chance that you and the rest of the male heterosexual population simply get turned on by different things: You know – growing up, other guys stowed dad’s “Playboy” under the mattress; you hid “Burke’s Peerage.” These days, other guys are plotting to lure their dates into bed; you’re trying to climb into your date’s family tree. It’s possible that you and the rest of the male heterosexuals are separated by something else; namely, heterosexuality. If you never feel much “magnetic pull” from any of the ladies, pull into a bookstore, and pull away with a copy of “Coming Out: An Act Of Love,” by Rob Eichberg, Ph.D., to see whether there are any closets you should be emerging from. If you never feel much “magnetic pull” from anyone, pop into your friendly neighborhood urologist’s, and ask him to check whether Mr. Happy might have decided to take exceptionally early retirement. If it’s neither medical nor sexual, blame the feminists -- or whatever those women call themselves -- those who ruin the lives of guys like you by telling them women want men with all the sexual aggression of a big pink stuffed bunny. Listen to them, and you’ll be the one women call when they need to get their carburetors rebuilt so they can safely drive 12 hours to get naked with somebody else. If a woman spends five hours with you, and it isn’t because she had you handcuffed to the back of her patrol car while delivering you to Federal prison, she’s sending you a message. And no, Boy Genius, it isn’t “I want to be your pen pal.” To find out whether it’s “Kiss Me Now,” you’ll have to grab her and try -- if you can get her on the phone to ask her out again. If you do, mumble something about how you’d “wanted to take it slow,” on previous dates (“slow” being a euphemism for “comatose”). Keep doing what you have been doing, and in no time, she’ll be breaking out the satin sheets, lighting candles, pouring red wine...and inviting some other guy over to her place. Got a problem? ARIES: Your business, your social life and your subconscious life will all be evoked this week. Deep learning continues as you make clear your intentions. How do you handle your urges? A sense of morality or immorality will be battling for your attention. TAURUS: Transformation is everywhere! It's up to you to be o.k. with the many changes that are happening. In times like these you'll need to know who your real friends are. Be happy with who you are, rather than being caught up with other people’s drama. GEMINI: You're ready for a breather. You might want to start the weekend by attending some sort of orientation meeting. Travels take you to exotic places. What you learn now will come of use. Partnerships are being formed. Will you work for love? CANCER: Overworked and overextended may be Cancer's favorite mantra during the holiday. Deprogram yourself from the cult of workaholics. Be bored for little bit of time everyday. Help others as you help yourself. Eat healthy amounts of fish, fruit, and vegetables. LEO: Your greatness is spilling over and translating to fun times for us all. If you're not hosting a party, you're making the party you're at so much that people think you're the host. Art is for the sharing. Benefit others with your creative endeavors. VIRGO: You're still recovering from Thanksgiving's blowout. Your nesting instincts are heightened. This is a great time to hear stories from relatives in regards to their amusing antics and as to how they faced their challenges. Make folk art. LIBRA: When one stresses their kidneys with beer, caffeine and too many sweets it often leads to fear. Fear not about your finances for you will find the balance. It's what you say and who you know that make a stroll through the neighborhood an act of poetry. SCORPIO: The benefits of Venus and Mars bump into each other in your sign. Material increase continues to bless you as you speak what you want. Pay others back that which you owe in order to increase everyone’s personal flow. Generosity wins hearts. SAGITTARIUS: Now that you made a name for yourself you may feel that you need to bowout and hide. The concerns of family and close friends will be your main concerns. Parties may bring you with gifts along with the typical birthday trappings. Smile graciously. CAPRICORN: Saving the best for last has always been your style. Write your will. Make up a fake funeral for yourself. Think about what you would miss the most here on earth. Do something to help others achieve the things that you cherish. Enjoy the here and now. AQUARIUS: You're like a volcano about to blow. Excitement and surprises contribute to the disorder of the day. Socially speaking you're cooking with all burners. Partners are encouraging you to have fun. Learn to be accepting of romance in the workplace. PISCES: Look forward to a super fine day come Tuesday the 10th. Venus and Mars will be conjoined in Scorpio trining the moon in Pisces. You get peace of mind. Your active imagination needs to be channeled into art. Share your art with a charitable cause. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Jakob Dylan 12/9/69, Greg Allman 12/8/47, Dave Brubeck 12/6/20 Koz McKev can be reached via e-mail, kozmickev@sunset.net
