We’ve made up a list, we’ve checked it twice, We haven’t been naughty, but rather quite nice, Kama’aina, we could use some help! We’re trying to save our fishpond, we’re doing the best we can, But we still need more volunteers to help us with our plan. We need some graphic artists, grant writers would be nice. Hawaiian cultural experts would just be added spice. Some fundraising fanatics, PR talent too. Educators would be great to join up with our crew. Hawaiian culture’s vital. It tells of feats so great. A people skilled in many things. Save it before it’s too late. Call or fax us on this line, number eightseven-five-nine-oh-five nine. (875-9059). A RUSH TO JUDGE News stories of Judge August's sentencing of local former high school football figures for fighting with resort visitors obviously carried a negative message, as seen by the deluge of protest letters. It is troubling that this rush to judgment is not based on a clear account of the trial, or even interviews with the defender and prosecutor. We just don't know what happened. Was the prosecutor inadequate? Was the defender brilliant? Was there really any prior intent established to beat up anyone ? Were those on the other side also drinking and perhaps confrontational? From the judge's point of view in sentencing, did the defendents have any prior offenses? What is their family and community history? Would spending time in jail, exposed to what amounts to a practical criminal education, serve a useful purpose?
Youth need both respect and guidance; the reaction of the families involved is crucial. I imagine if my parents were in this role, they would have been supportive but demanding that I make full restitution. And they would not have leaped to a conclusion without getting the facts. Charges of racial bias raise questions: If a vacationing group of graduating mainland high school football stars were drinking, went to a local neighborhood and got into a fight, what would be considered appropriate justice? While there is no denying the existence of many kinds of prejudice in Hawaii, I have noticed that some members of races accustomed to preferential treatment elsewhere are taken aback when it is missing here, and often infer racism. My guess is they have no idea of what being a victim of real racism feels like, unlike many older residents of Hawaii. Daniel Grantham, Haiku
NO GOVERNMENT SECRETS PLEASE I just read your Nov. 28 Force Fed (an old issue of Maui Time was the only available reading material next to the toilet) in which you characterize the First Amendment and Freedom of Information Act as a "loophole in the Constitution." Have you seen the press briefings our Defense Department grants the media in this supposedly "free" country? The military only tells us exactly what they want us to know, and the sort of "cheap entertainment" that features Special Ops training is obviously geared to generate blindly patriotic fervor, demonstrate our military superiority to the world and encourage recruitment. The other day, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld refused to even concede that the US was involved in the assassination of an alleged Al Qaeda leader whose car was bombed in Yemen by a CIA drone aircraft. If anything, we the American public, are starved of information about the covert activities of our government. Jesus, half of George W's administration are leftovers from his father's Iran-Contra scandal posse. Remember that one? How many briefings did they give us about their secret dealings with Iran and their involvement in a Nicaraguan conflict which Congress specifically directed them to stay out of? The right to know what our government is doing with our military is paramount to our democracy. Without it we risk becoming a dictatorship prone to provoking conflict that is unwanted by the majority of peace-loving Americans. Some of us think we are already dangerously close. I'm afraid your naivete disqualifies you from being a journalist of any integrity. Just another jaw flapping with uneducated opinions. And as the saying goes, opinions are like assholes....everybody's got one. Try opening up your eyes a bit and paying a little closer attention. Perhaps then your opinions will be worth printing. P.S. Bali is hardly Indonesia's "main island." Of Indonesia's 1,100 plus islands, Java, Sumatra, Sumbawa, Timor, Irian Jaya and Borneo are all far larger and more populated. Bali just happens to be the one foreign tourists most like to visit. Your ethnocentrism is showing, ugly American. Dan Collins, Wailuku

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON
A LOTT OF STUPIDITY IN ONE MAN It is nothing short of amazing that in this day and age we can still have someone who is as ignorant as Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Mississippi. Normally, I’m not one to invoke the current calendar as a reason for common sense but we as a people are supposed to evolve intellectually as we get older. But if Trent Lott is any indication, some things will never change. The you-know-what really hit the fan last week when Lott gave a speech at exSenator Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday party. First and foremost, Thurmond was one of the most useless Senators we’ve had in recent years. Sure, he may have been good during his youthful years but that was back before electricity. Staying on as an elected Senator well into his nineties devalued the entire Senate and showed the true mentality of his constituency. Anyway, during his 100th birthday party, Trent Lott, the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate, gave remarks to the effect that the entire United States would have been better off if Thurmond had been elected president when he ran in 1948 on a ticket that promoted segregation. Lott stated that "If Thurmond had been elected, the U.S. would not have these kind of problems we have today." Now, Lott didn’t elaborate on "these kinds of problems", but the damage was done. The Richter Scale at the Washington D.C. area geological office must have gone through the roof from the collective jaw dropping in the capital that day. You could almost sense the astonishment as the entire Republican Party looked at one another and said, "Did he really just say that?" The spin cycle went into immediate overdrive as Republicans scrambled to find their positions and Democrats screamed for his ouster. President Bush was put on the hot seat as he was pressed to demand Lott’s resignation. But luckily, he stopped short of doing that.
If Trent Lott resigns immediately, the Republicans will claim to have put an end to discrimination within their party and they will move on. The problem will be swept away and Bush will go back to harrassing Iraq. But nothing will have been fixed. If we are ever going to get over racial discrimination in this country, the people of this country have to initiate it. Trent Lott needs to be removed from his position as a leader of the American people the same way he was put in that position; by votes. Senator Lott cannot be forced to resign as a strategic move by his political party. He needs to be removed by the people of this country to show that that kind of idiocy is unacceptable.
WELCOME TO REALITY People on Oahu are currently being relocated temporarily because their homes lie in the paths of falling rocks. There was even talk among residents that the state should be held liable because there weren’t adequate signs posted warning of the potential danger. These people obviously failed to realize that islands are old volcanoes, which means everything starts at the peak and heads down to the ocean, including rain water. When rainwater collects on the mountains and heads to the ocean in rivers, it carries rocks and debris along the way. And if you happen to have built a house in the way of these rocks, oops. Unless some genius within the USGS can figure out a way to stop the rain and subsequent erosion, the current relocation of people on Oahu away from their homes is not going to do any good. They seem to think that they can shore up the hillsides somehow but man has never been able to stop Mother Nature. We can look here on Maui and see where they try to stem the erosion effects along the Pali highway with fencing only to look at California in the late 90’s to see that heavy flooding will cause any cliff to erode, regardless of the million dollar homes on top. The reality is, you can’t stop erosion, no matter what. And Oahu residents may think their relocating is temporary, but unless they move away from the hills, they better get used to it.
EH BRAH! Send anonymous thanks, confessions or accusations, 200 words or less, changing or deleting the names of the guilty and innocent to “Eh Brah!” c/o Maui Time Weekly, 658 Front Street, Ste. 126A–7278, Lahaina, HI 96761
Yeah, you with the badge and the gun... What happened to that poor guy who died in police custody?! Why did this alleged “scuffle” happen behind closed doors? How could he have had “an unattended death” 5 hours after you put handcuffs on him? How could you release a report in The Advertiser about “90% blocked arteries” before the official autopsy is completed? (Smells like a cover-up to me!) He was a good man, and a good husband and father, and he didn’t do drugs! – He was heard to say, “You’re hurting me! I can’t breathe!” I’ve watched cronyism and corruption for years out of this police dept., but this looks very suspicious! What is happening here? - A longtime quiet (up to now!) observer in Lahaina

It all came down to the last three minutes of the year and Kauai's Andy Irons dug deep to turn the final of the Xbox Pipeline Masters into his ultimate day of victory. Having claimed the world championship title two weeks ago, Irons had two more goals to achieve before calling it a year: To win the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series title - one of surfing's most coveted crowns, and to settle a score with younger brother Bruce, who was the defending champion at Pipeline. He did both, winning $30,000 for the Xbox Pipeline Masters, $7,500 and a Ford Ranger FX4 truck for the Series win. Irons became the third surfer in history to win the world title, the Pipe Masters and the Vans Triple Crown in one winter. The 35-minute final was held in solid six-foot waves predominately at Backdoor - the right-handers. For the first half it was looking as if 12-year ASP World Tour veteran and renowned Pipe charger Shane Dorian (Haw) might finally have his moment of glory on home sand. A finalist at Pipe on previous occasions, 30-year-old Dorian had a strong support crew pushing him for a win. He threw himself into the Pipeline, notching up a couple of great tube rides and successfully pulling off maneuvers usually reserved for more
docile waves. But it all unraveled in a matter of seconds when, with three minutes to go, Dorian took the first wave of the biggest set of the final, pulled in and got tubed, only to exit and see Irons behind him in a bigger, cleaner, deeper barrel. As Irons' arms flew skyward in jubilation, Dorian's hopes sank like a rock. Not another wave would be ridden in the final and Irons would win his fourth WCT event of the year and the Vans Triple Crown title. He had to win this event to take the Triple Crown title from Australian Joel Parkinson. "I couldn't have kept my arms down if they were dead-bolted. It was just pure emotion," said Irons. "I wouldn't have been able to write a finish this perfect. My friends are so stoked and as far as I'm concerned, they won too, and my family. They won with me and have been so supportive, psyching me up. It's been unreal. "The whole Triple Crown has just been amazing. We've had such good waves this winter and while it wasn't incredible Pipeline today, it was good Backdoor and I love it there, so it worked out well for me. "He's been holding that Pipe Master in my face for about a year now," he added of his brother Bruce's 2001 victory. "It's good to have one now and to be carried off the beach by your

buddies is always incredible. He can't say he's done anything I haven't yet, so now it's just his turn to get on the tour." Dorian never thought the final was his. "I actually had no idea about the scores, but I thought Andy was in the lead the whole time. I went on a bad wave toward the end and there was a sick one right behind it and of course Andy was on it. That's all it took and he surfed well. He did great all year, so I'm stoked for him. "I'm just stoked to do well in Hawaii. It's really important for me at Pipe. I surf here all the time and was just really pumped to make the final." While Irons and Dorian dominated the show, the final was a four-man affair that third placed Kelly Slater (USA) and fourth placed Mick Fanning (Australia) barely made a dent on. A five-time master of the Pipe and a pacesetter throughout the rounds, the ocean offered Slater little by way of good scoring rides when it mattered most. Fanning was similarly impressive en-route to the final, but kicked around in leftovers with Slater for fourth. "It didn't unfold the way I wanted it to at all," said Slater. "I got a couple that were all right and the best one I got didn't work out. There wasn't a lot to come by. I got out into the final and it didn’t feel like my day at all (despite a perfect 10 earlier in the day). I wasn't seeing it out there - usually you can see something happening. I was kind of waiting around for something to happen. "Andy has turned everything around in his life and created something so great. I'm stoked for him." For Fanning, all was not lost by his fourth place finish. His performance today saw him awarded the title of 2002 ASP Rookie of the Year. "I wasn't doing that well at the start of the year, but then I had a win at J-Bay (SAfr) and made final in Brazil," said Fanning. "To finish the year here and make the final at Pipe, I was
just so stoked. To see Joel Parkinson win the other week and Sunset and Andy win the world title, it's just been a great year." In equal fifth place were Cory Lopez (USA) and Damien Hobgood (USA), and equal seventh were Taylor Knox (USA) and Taj Burrow (Australia). These four were eliminated in the semi-finals. The highest placed Brazilian was Flavio Padaratz, eliminated in the quarterfinals by Hobgood and Burrow. Perfect 10-point rides were scored by Jake Paterson (Australia - round three), Slater (quarters), and Luke Hitchings (Australia) in his quarterfinal heat with Slater. A women's Billabong Expression Session was held between the semi-finals and the final, offering a break for the men and a showcase of women's surfing at the Pipeline. Recently crowned five-time consecutive world champion Layne Beachley (Australia) and Rochelle Ballard (Hawaii) paddled out for a 20-minute exhibition. "It's pretty amazing to be able to go out at Pipe with nobody out," said Ballard. "Kind of one of those dream experiences just to be out there with one other girl. The opportunity was unbelievable. I admire the guys so much for what they do and look up to them for everything they do out there." The Vans Triple Crown Series features the world's top athletes competing in three championship events in each of the following sports: Skateboarding, Wakeboarding, Surfing, Snowboarding, BMX and Freestyle Motocross. The Series is made possible through proud sponsors Vans, Xbox, Mountain Dew, Ford Trucks, Right Guard Xtreme Sport, Fox Sports Net, Surfing Magazine and NBC Sports.

Easily Amused The latest release from HGA and Friction, “Easily Amused” premiered at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on November 15th, 2002. This film, with its plentiful shots of killer surf spots from our beautiful island home, and many other world class locations, combined with a great soundtrack make it a film to see if not own. With our own Maui locals behind the cameras, “Easily Amused” features many local surfers including Maui’s young and extremely talented youth as well as sick shots of professional surfers from around the world. From Honolua Bay to Ma’alaea, this film captures some of the best spots known to Maui. Local knowledge and skilled filmmakers create a surf film sure to be special to Maui’s residents. Kaleo Roberson, the director, Graham Crommitter and Kiva Rivers, the photographers, and Dave Early the editor, combined to create a surf film that captures Maui’s incredible surf at its best. When Kaleo and all the Ho’okipa boys were growing up, a man by the name of Chris Tronolone expressed
interest in making a surf flick featuring them, however it never materialized. This encounter fired up their interest in making films on their own, as their experience with Chris Tronolone made them realize that if they wanted to make their dreams of having their own Maui surf film come true, they had to do it themselves. “Infamous”, which precedes “Easily Amused”, came out in 2000 as the first HGA production. “Infamous”, which took 2 years to complete, was a challenge for the first time filmmakers. Despite the hurdles presented by the film, such as going through 3 cameramen, they prevailed and finished in 2000. Kaleo Roberson referred to the difficulties they experienced, “ We stopped making it so many times; it was like we had a mental block, but it was good for a first film.” The footage for “Easily Amused” was taken

from March 2000 through August 2002. These local filmmakers are perceptive to the talent rising from Maui’s groms and realize the need to provide them with exposure. As Kaleo Roberson explains, “We made the film mainly for the kids, we put the pros in to entertain.” It also features a mean sequence of Les Potts, a long time surf icon and shaper well known in Hawaiian waters. In addition, the film pays tribute to the surfers who are no longer with us in the section, “Only the good die young”, which captures the talent of those whose untimely deaths provided the underlying inspiration for this film. “ Be persistent and never give up, do something everyday, this could be your last day and have fun!” are some words of advice from the director, Kaleo Roberson. For the past 15 years or so, HGA stood for Ho’okipa Groms Association, based out of Ho’okipa and made up of the people who charge the surf at the famous beach park. HGA now stands for Hawaii Groms Association, which as of 1999 provided a sponsor for the unrecognized shredders. HGA, together with Friction (a local shirt company), and other generous sponsors created quite a prize give-a-way at the premiere. Some of the surfers featured in this film are Bruce and Andy Irons, Kaimana Henry, Ian Walsh, Nalu Wallace, Steve Cooney, Kelly Slater, Alika Moepono, the filmmakers and the groms killing it around Maui. Many of the spots highlighted in this film are familiar to most of the residents; those who surf have probably been there if not practically lived there. These spots include Honolua, Ma’alaea, Harbor, and Pua Mana, to name a few. There is also some amazing footage of Teahupo’o and Pipeline. Currently, they are beginning work on their 3rd film, spending some of this winter in the Volcom house on Oahu’s north shore. They have taken footage of the Triple Crown contests this winter. One of the highlights includes Bruce Irons in the Triple Crown contest capturing a score of 9.6 on an epic wave at Pipeline, sporting an HGA sticker on his board. There is recent footage of epic Jaws from those monster north swells and perfect kona wind conditions this winter. Kaleo Roberson explains that the new film will be, “Shortened pure action, like a collage of surfing with interviews.” In order to keep surf films captivating and to provoke interest, there is a need for new and exotic locations. They plan to film this year in Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia and Hawaii. A great deal of expense arises from traveling around the world to capture epic waves on film. If any sponsors are interested in helping these talented filmmakers write to Kaleo Roberson c/o Maui Time Weekly. If you are interested in purchasing this video (also on DVD), it is available for the reasonable price of $22.50 at Hana Highway Surf, Quicksilver Board Riders, Lahaina or Kuau Store. HGA products are sold there too!

"Eddie Would Go" On the cover of Eddie Would Go is a photo of Eddie Aikau on a day in November, 1967, when he caught earthshaking waves and made his name known throughout the surfing world. Eventually known as the "King of Waimea Bay," Eddie Aikau was a lifeguard, peacemaker, sailor, and a surfer who is known today as one of the heroes of the Hawaiian Renaissance. Eddie Would Go should be in the Christmas stocking of everybody who loves the islands. Everything that one knows, or thinks he knows, about Hawai'i is gently transformed by seeing the place anew through the lens of the life of Eddie Aikau. Eddie's story is not simply the story of one man, but also of the Aikau family and, by extension, of the people of Hawai'i. It is a tale of tragic loss and jubilant triumph, recounting moments of terror and joy and renewing faith in the abiding values of the Hawaiian people and culture. Eddie's life also reminds readers once more of the significance of where they are. Anyone who pays attention in the islands has heard the expression "Eddie would go," and, yes, Eddie Aikau is the one who
inspired the expression, when in 1986, Mark Foo's remark concerning dangerous surf at the first annual "Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Contest" surfing competition became a watchword for surfers. Although on the face of it, the words sound like a macho call to contest, the life of Eddie Aikau provides a deeper understanding of the attitude the phrase encompasses. A "soul surfer" in every sense, Eddie Aikau rode the waves to meet a challenge within himself to seek the edge and find a place among elemental forces of wind, wave, and sand in their majestic display of power. In raging surf, Eddie had the confidence in his ability and experience to wade into the sea, and he did so in many ways. One of the most sacred of roles is that of guardian. Eddie was a lifeguard at Waimea Bay, and he saved many lives in the dangerous surf there, and it is clear that his drive to ride the waves was another sort of devotion to the preservation of life. Eddie surfed as part of a deep selfdiscovery and a celebration, renewal, and continuance of a Hawaiian heritage. That he is hailed as a hero now demonstrates that the dedicated man of prowess, no matter how humble, will come to greatness, and in the case of Eddie Aikau, it is a greatness all of us can admire. The same impulse to save lives led to
'ohana, and their support opened doors everywhere, for everyone wanted to contribute to getting Eddie's story told. Eddie Would Go is not only the tale of the life of Eddie Aikau, it is a chronicle of the emergence and establishment of the Hawaiian Renaissance and the rebirth of native Hawaiian pride and a spirited revival of culture that continues today, and it is the enduring story of how the life of one quiet man can touch the world.

Eddie's disappearance at sea in 1978, during the second voyage of the Hokule'a. To summon help for the foundering vessel and its stranded crew, Eddie set off on his surfboard to paddle twenty miles through twelve-foot swells to Lana'i. Although the crew and the canoe were eventually rescued, Eddie was never seen again. His loss brought the community together once more, though this time in grief, and it is his legacy that so many remain united in his memory. In his continuing role as guardian and peacemaker, and in further contribution to the solidarity of community in the islands, Eddie's story brings together once more all the people who had a part, large or small, in it, and all gratefully contribute of their time and stories to make the chronicle complete. The honesty, sincerity, and determination to get the story right, even if events did not cast the teller is the best light, is impressive. The depth and breadth of the narration is a tribute to the abilities and the determination of author Stuart Holmes Coleman to learn and tell the story. A poet and the Director of Test Preparation and Tutoring at College Connections Hawai'i, an educational non-profit organization helping Hawai'i's students get into college, he believes that Eddie's story is one that unites us all. Coleman is glad to acknowledge that in his efforts to gather the facts, he had the generous and unending cooperation of the Aikau

As the 2002 Maui Time Weekly Special Surf Issue came to its climax our cunning editorial department turned a sharp eye to the future of Maui’s surfing community. As we worked hard to identify and list Maui’s top up and coming talent we realized how difficult a task we had undertaken. There is unmistakably more talent than we have room for on the following pages. However, here is our sampling of the few that fit, ranging in age from 10 to 18, with plenty of surfing achievements, personal and otherwise to show for it. Let yourself gain inspiration from these breakthrough success stories, youth is a gift and we can all benefit by recognizing they are the future.

I’ve only really eaten Hawaiian food at weddings, in those paper plates with the compartments in them. I like it, but I never thought I’d find it any way except dished out of chafing dishes in a long production line. One evening spent at Hana Hou Café in Haiku was all it took to change the way I look at Hawaiian food and local style dining. The accommodations are clean and comfortable. It feels like you’re over at your auntie’s house in the country and she’s cooking up the goods, only with cloth napkins, service, and nice artwork on the walls. The screened-in lanai is colorfully painted in an ocean motif with a large net full of brightly colored fish

hanging overhead. The atmosphere is relaxed and homey. The menu is full of all kinds of local favorites. There’s Chicken Katsu, Loco Moco, Katsu Moco, Sweet Sour Pork, Teri Chicken, and Kalbi Ribs, all served with rice and Mac Salad at a very reasonable price. At an average of eight dollars a plate you get a full meal and then some. But nothing beats the Hana Hou Plate with tender Pork and Butterfish Lau Lau, Kalua Pork and Cabbage, Chicken Long Rice, Squid Luau, Lomi Lomi Salmon, Poi, Mac Salad, and Haupia. This feast is only fifteen dollars and I’m not going to pass it up. I have to start with pupus first. Is there any other way to eat? There’s a long list of appetizers and I’m just starting to make my choices when I spot a friend of mine in the kitchen. It turns out Amarin Jun Sribura is running the show now in the kitchen, and I’m happy because I know he’s a good chef and he understands local cuisine. I talk him into making me a pupu platter. I sampled bite-sized portions of sweet and tender Kal Bi, fresh and flavorful Ahi Poke, huge, succulent Shrimp Tempura, Ahi Sashimi, and spicy, real-kind Kim Chee. He showed off a little with his amazing Thai Pepper Pork, but that’s not on the menu. Yet. Our Hana Hou Plate arrives in an elegant wooden platter carved out of monkeypod, with separate pukas to keep the flavors intact. The portions are generous and the flavors are fresh and authentic. My wife grew up on Oahu eating Hawaiian food and she gives Hana Hou a big thumbs up, especially the Chicken Long Rice, her favorite, and the Squid Luau, which is often imitated and rarely done right. Halfway through our meal Bruddah Francis picks up his guitar and serenades a birthday party on the lanai. His amazing falsetto and skillful strumming soon has a smile on everyone’s face. He wanders over to our table and asks for requests. “Puamana” comes immediately to mind, along with “Kahalu’u”, and Bruddah Francis knows them both. As soon as he begins he’s joined by old Uncle Joe, who croons along beside him, his mind’s eye on days long gone. What more could I want than dining out in the country on delicious Hawaiian food while listening to the music of the islands and being surrounded by people who treat me like family? Hana Hou Café is in the Haiku Cannery, across from the post office. They offer a fenced-in courtyard for private outside dining, a comfortably cozy interior with screened-in lanai, and a pick up window by the kitchen with benches and tables, perfect for a plate lunch or Hana Hou burger on the run. They’re open daily from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. and can be reached at 575-2661 for take out orders or catering specializing in luaus. They have more than just Hawaiian food, though. Check out their outstanding Tempura Ahi Roll, the Wild Mushroom Pasta, New York and Rib Eye Steaks, and daily fresh fish specials. Try them out just once and you’ll definitely say “Hana Hou!”

This week we are going to get away from those classic varietals and go to Europe to find the Ribera Del Duero region of Spain known exclusively as a red wine region. Although rosés are made for local consumption and hardly exported, the best reds are deeply concentrated, fleshy ripe and structured without the harsh aggressive tannins. This region holds some of the best reds in all of Spain. Tinto Fino is the major grape used almost in every red wine made throughout the region. This varietal is thought to be a genetic variation of the Tempranillo grape, the main grape of Rioja, Spain. Our feature is Condado De Haza, which is from a south-facing slope, 1 kilometer from the Duero River. Superior exposure and soils give this American-oak, well-aged red a fruit forward softness. This hearty red will be best enjoyed with your next lamb dinner!

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

Surfing Meets Sumi-E Maui artist Tania Arens has had a longterm love affair with the traditional Japanese style of painting known as Sumie. Lately her dramatic and bold Sumi ink “water” dragons have found their way onto Custom Maui-made surfboards. China introduced Sumi-e, the art of Sumi ink to Japan in the seventh century. The earliest known examples of this ancient art form, turtle shells and animal bones painted with red and black characters, date back to 221 BC. Considered sacred, they were used by Chinese shamans to divine the future. Sumi-e is a very “in the moment” or process oriented philosophy of painting. The goal is to spontaneously feel your way to the final image

rather than sketching a design first. The looseness or freedom of the Sumi-e style demands a high level of skill, practice and confidence. Known for its fine aesthetic qualities, Sumi-e is done on specially made fiber and rice papers using a deep black aromatic ink made from the very fine soot of burnt pine knots. Tania Arens became aquatinted with the Sumi-e form as well as other Asian arts through her grandfather’s collection. He was a well-respected German artist who had traveled extensively bringing back ceramics, wood block prints and books that Tania poured over as a child. She would always have an interest in the native arts of ancient cultures, a theme that reoccurred later in life during her 10 years as a tattoo artist. Arens was born in NYC before she moved to Germany with her family at age seven. Later, as a student she gave up her scholarship to a prestigious German art academy in order to pursue tattooing full time. Since then she has traveled and tattooed in many places in Europe and the US. Several years ago she was stopping on Maui for a quick visit en-route to New Zealand, when she was in a serous accident. Once recuperated (a year later) she tried to leave for New Zealand again only to break her foot, a third similarly painful episode of bizarre timing finally convinced her

to stop trying to leave, Maui has been her home ever since. Arens has always been interested in turning everyday objects into art. When she was growing up she would look at things like refrigerators, trash cans or skateboards and immediately imagine what they would look like transformed by some cool artistic embellishment. When she stepped foot on Maui and saw all these big blank white surfboards, she immediately imagined them painted. Soon she did paint a Japanese style dragon on top of a surfboard in acrylics - it was difficult and temporal, not knowing how long the acrylic would hold up against the power of the salty ocean. Later she learned that paintings on rice paper would be ideal for the shapers to work with, it was then that her practice with sumi-e began. It took an entire year of discipline before she felt that she could spontaneously and consistently paint a potent Sumi-e ink water dragon. For the best ride, dedicated surfers prefer to have their boards custom fitted or handshaped for them. The “shaper” takes size and riding style into account when sculpting specific nuances of form into a “foam blank.” Once the blank is finished, fins and artwork are added and a liquid fiberglass is pored over the entire surface. Once the liquid chemical touches the artwork, in this case rice paper, it immediately dissolves the paper leaving only the ink dragon behind. A final “glassing” adds a high gloss finish and completes the process by sealing the artwork within the board. Pictured here, shaped for Ron Kopaz, is a 7’ 0’ swallow tail thruster, designed to add speed to bigger “mushier” waves. Surf and skateboard cultures have been an alternative venue for original art or “graphics” since the early 70’s. In recent years this art phenomenon has been recognized with national exhibits in fine art galleries and private collections. Arens combines ancient Japanese and tattoo inspired art with the modern subculture of surfing, and takes it to a fine art level of quality. A dynamic match that, in the spirit of other locally favored unions like Spam-Musubi, so uniquely expresses the culturally rich, culturally mixed style of the islands. For your own custom dragon surfboard or painting, contact Tania Arens @ Island ink tattoo 579-9461 or email her at <redsailfish@hotmail.com>

PICKS The following picks are just a few of the specialized Holiday events that occur without great pomp & circumstance, that we probably take for granted every year, yet are not without some entertaining value...
PICTURES WITH SANTA Let’s face it - pictures posing with a drab schematic background are boring. Ah, but put a fat hairy man in a red jumpsuit in one and its FESTIVE! Start or continue your annual collection of Photos with Santa by visiting any mall or check the events section.
HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIRS The ultimate venues for finding the perfect gift for that hard-to-find-a-gift-for, special someone who seems to have everything. I mean, where else can you find a shell-covered kleenex box holder?
FOOD DRIVES/VOLUNTEERS This would be the time of year to dilute all your debauchery and sins with that one heroic attempt at serving up Christmas dinner, or disposing of your unwanted goods.
OH, THE PARTIES Holiday work parties? So much fun and so very naughty (if you can remember them!). Dinner parties with friends &/or family - sharing the love (and pie!) is the best part of this season!
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS Are they still showing reruns of all those great TV Christmas Claymation shows? Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, etc. Man, those are still so good...
LORD OF THE RINGS: TWO TOWERS Oh, go ahead and indulge yourself in a guilty pleasure or two - as in Two Towers baby, yeah! This highly anticipated epic adventure sequel, featuring my fantasy future ex-husband, Aragorn, comes to Maui’s stinkiest theatre in time for the greatest season, er, reason for escapism ever!

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY
Musical Madness A Musical Even Husbands Will Enjoy ) Chicago ( "Chicago" is a winning cinematic version of the long running, Tony Awardwinning Broadway play, originally directed and choreographed with lasciviously iconic style by the late Bob Fosse. With only a couple of clunker set-pieces (such as Richard Gere's opening number in which he strips down to his underwear), the movie moves at a hot pace and finishes with a flourish before wearing out its welcome. Renee Zellweger ("Jerry Maguire") and Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Traffic") are revelations as accomplished dancers and singers, each holding their own with graceful aplomb throughout the film's many rigorous numbers. The fiery soundtrack for the movie isn't too shabby either, with an especially hot rendition of "When You're Good To Mama, Mama's good to You" by Queen Latifah. Inspired by the sensationalized trials of Cook County during the roaring '20s, Maurine Watkins originally wrote "Chicago" in 1926 as a play entitled "The Brave Little Woman." In 1975, after two film versions, Broadway veterans John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse adapted "Chicago" into a slick Broadway musical. With a list of solid songs by Kander and Ebb, and with Fosse's sexy choreography, stage legends like Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera were soon born. "Chicago" actually works better as a film than as a stage musical because it's been shaped into a tight three-act film structure that doesn't allow for the meandering slack that the Broadway version suffers from. Screenwriter Bill Condon elevates the story's leading character Roxie Hart (Zellweger), by giving her noteworthy ambition and lusty passion a twist of sympathetic innocence that innately bubbles from Zellweger's performance. Roxie Hart is a wannabe cabaret Jazz singer and dancer who's been cheating on her husband Amos (John C. Reilly "The Good Girl") with a guy that's promised to get her an audition to replace vaudeville star Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones). But when the slippery dude reveals his lacking connections after a short bit of copulation and smacks Roxie across her and her husband's bedroom, Roxie reaches for the .25 caliber and puts the pretender 10 feet under. Roxie's mishap occurs around the same time that Velma has killed her song- and-dance partner, and the two rivals soon vie for publicity and the accomplished attention of

defense attorney Billy Flynn (Richard Gere "Dr. T and the Women") from behind Chicago prison bars. Within the parameters of the loose story are stage set pieces, prison sequences, and court-related numbers. These different contexts generate call-and-response transitions that tease and taunt the audience with every winking bit of show biz fantasy that drips off the songs like melted butter from a hot spoon. The trick is that "Chicago" will entertain even the most anti-musical audience member, if you can just get he or she into a theater seat. Every aspect of lighting design (by Jules
Fisher and Peggy Eisnehauer) and costume design (as culled from art deco, Bauhaus and Cubism by Colleen Atwood) contributes to the film's rich palette of handsome textures and tones. The movie harmonizes in unexpected ways that hold your interest in the characters, just as you would with characters in a straight narrative movie. But it's the film's tight editing by Martin Walsh that keeps your eyes focused on the lush attractions at hand, without being bombarded by the arcane as happened with Baz Luhrmann's slopfest "Moulin Rouge." While it’s clear that Richard Gere had to work very hard to make his dancing and
singing work, it's nevertheless satisfying to see him almost succeed at making it look easy. Even John C. Reilly does a better-than-workmanlike job on his song and dance outing "Mr. Cellophane." Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones are the primary reasons to check out "Chicago," because, as actresses, these two lovely women know intuitively how to drape character traits over every muscle they move as dancers, and how to allow their phrasing and inflection to guide their singing. The women whose last names begin with Zs are a dazzling combination as the film's climax number attests.

Thursday, December 19 THE WILD THORNBERRYS - 5pm. Nickelodeon's animated "star" Eliza Thornberry, who can talk to and understand animals, and her parents, who are nature-documentary filmmaker, and best friend, Darwin the chimpanzee, have to deal with poachers in the African jungle. Celebrity voices include: Lacey Chabert, Rupert Everett and Marisa Tormei. (Paramount Pictures) FRIDA - 7:30pm. A highly praised biography of the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her lover and husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) directed by Tony Award winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King). Praised as "A brilliant spectacle! A teeming, color-soaked portrait...with bursts of music, imagination and sex" by the NY Times. Rated R. 122 min. (Miramax Films)
Friday, December 20 MAX ( ) - 5pm. Writer/director Menno Meyjes (screenwriter on "The Color Purple" and "The Siege") crafts a clever meditation about the course of Hitler's life that enabled him to use his artistic talents (he was a talented painter) to create an iconic formula of propaganda and rhetoric to lead Germany. Max Rothman (John Cusack) is a Jewish World War I veteran dealing in art when he meets Hitler (Noah Taylor) and mentors him on contributing to the modernist art movement with his painting. "Max" is a curious and inventive film that dares to break convention while acknowledging that all art can be misconstrued to meet any end. Rated R. 108 minutes (Lions Gate Films). - Reviewed by Cole Smithey FAR FROM HEAVEN - 7:30pm. Julianne Moore (who won the Best Actress award for this role at the Venice International Film Festival), Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert star in this critically acclaimed melodrama about the behindclosed-doors life of a seemingly perfect couple in 1950's Connecticut. Directed by Todd Haynes as a tribute to Douglas Sirk, who did glamorous tearjerkers like "Imitation of Life" and "Written on the Wind". Rated PG-13. 117 min. (Focus Features) 8 MILE ( ) - 10pm. As unlikely as a clear-eyed and entertaining film about a poor, white Detroit kid succeeding beyond his surroundings through rap music might be, "8 Mile" is that gloriously gritty movie. Respectable performances by the film's ensemble cast gives clarity to the film's scrupulously realized depiction of Detroit's rap-infused environment circa 1995. Latifah, John C. Reilly and Christine Baranski star in this winning cinematic version of the long running, Tony Award-winning Broadway play, originally directed and choreographed with lasciviously iconic style by the late Bob Fosse. With only a couple of clunker setpieces (such as Richard Gere's opening number) the movie moves at a hot pace and finishes with a flourish just before wearing out its welcome. Rated R. 107 minutes (Miramax Films). - Reviewed by Cole Smithey SPIRITED AWAY - 10pm. The latest feature from Hayao Miyazak (Princess Mononoke) is one of the most effortlessly engaging movies ever made. Its magical landscape is the Japanese folk-art equivalent of Oz or Narnia. The LA Times raved "prepare to be astonished by one of the world's master animators." Rated PG. 131 min. (Buena Vista Releasing)
THE EMPEROR’S CLUB ( ) - 2pm. A sobering right-to-passage story in which prep school Professor of Western Civilization William Hundert (Kevin Kline "French Kiss") becomes seduced by his own optimism for one rebellious student's potential before, years later, realizing the depth of his failure to prune the roots of bad faith from the student. The story gives an insightful rendering of the way ethics and morals are corrupted by a specific brand of greed that, in this case, emanate from the selfishness of a cold father. Rated PG-13. 115 minutes (Universal Studios). Reviewed by Cole Smithey THE PIANIST ( ) - 5pm. Roman Polanski's finest work to date. Winner of the coveted Palme d'Or at Cannes this year, the film is an intimate and unsentimental rendering of Polish radio pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman's (Adrien Brody - "Harrison's Flowers") autobiographical account of his survival in Nazi occupied Warsaw from 1939 to 1945. There were 10,000 Polish Jews living in Warsaw when the Nazis invaded, and only 20 remaining when the Russians liberated the city. Wladyslaw Szpilman was one of those 20. Adrien Brody gives an understated and resonant performance in this unflinching history lesson. Rated R. 148 minutes (Focus Features). - Reviewed by Cole Smithey 25TH HOUR - 7:30pm. 2002-2003 JAWS Tow-In World Cup Waiting Period Begins
Rodney Kilborn of Handsome Bugga Productions, the promoter of this year’s Jaws TIWC, officially announces that the waiting period has begun: Beginning this Friday, from December 20, 2002 until the end of March 2003. The contestants and promoters will now have to wait patiently for Mother Nature to do her thing to produce the minimum requirement of 25 foot plus Pe’ahi surf. With already a few giant days at Jaws, one of them being the November 26th, 2002 session, a few of this year’s participating contestants had an opportunity to get warmed up and get reacquainted with JAWS! Garrett McNamara (last year’s winner) got the biggest tube ride of the November 26, 2002 session and pulled it off while Makua Rothman got a wave that may have been big-
ger than all the waves during last year’s contest, as stated by Mike Parsons. Then there was Brad Gerlach who survived the heaviest beating he had ever experienced in his surfing career. After straightening out on a solid set wave he got dumped on, dragged under water for over 100 yards and then had to contend with the next four waves right on the head. He was violently pushed all the way inside making it for a very difficult and stressful rescue. A couple of hours later, after figuring out where he was, what he was doing and all rested up, Brad was right back out in the line up with partner Mike Parsons. You can put all your money on one thing, this year’s event is going to go off and there is no holding back! Contest Sponsor is Studio Mega / Brazil.
For further information about the 2002-2003 JAWS TIWC please check back to www.towsurfer.com as we will continue to bring you exclusive first hand and all the late breaking news associated with the contest. There will be no video cameras allowed unless you are hired by the production company. If you would like to purchase this year’s Jaws TIWC T-Shirt, designed by Daniel Kilborn/Rodney’s Son, please contact: Promoter/Maui, HI Rodney Kilborn Handsome Bugga Productions Tel: (808) 575-2840 Handsomebugga@aol.com

DIFFICULTLISTENING
Interview with Juha Mole: How is it being a musician in Maui? Adam: Obviously, hard...tricky. There are no easily accessible public venues or access to the media, unless you do poppy jawaiian music. Ghalib: On the other hand, there are fewer distractions on Maui. Jojoboy: To me, what I really like about Maui is the way that, as much as folks have their own style of music or their own genre, it gets mixed up a lot and really easily. Like Hinterlander and Demune will be working together and it becomes the Boystain show. All these different genres of music are sort of influencing each other, and it has to be that way, because we're all that we've got. So the music scenes just sort of overlap. It makes it easier to have a really diverse scene all in one and it's not about being hip or about being true punk or hip hop. I haven't really found that anywhere else. Adam: I think what constitutes a scene is energy, and we do have that energy, but I think people here just aren't used to having somewhere to go or having something to do. And if there is a club it usually only lasts for 2 or 3 months, so people don't really get attached to anything. They assume that nothing's going on. Mole: What drew you to hip hop? Jojoboy: I think, like a lot of hip hop musicians, I didn't play an instrument so I'd f*#k around with the stereo. I'd make these tapes of drum beats made from the pause button effect, and then later I began to mix spoken word over disco beats and stuff, and create these sort of insane mixes. I always dug punk stuff too and really admired the revolutionary energy in that, but hip hop is a sound I gravitate towards more. And as far as the roots of hip hop, Africa Bambaatta really started by having people battle through words instead of with guns or whatever, and from there he brought in the four elements of hip hop[break dancing, graffiti, emceeing, and turntablism. And it gave people a whole new outlet of creativity, like with the insane breaking and the art, and everything like that. So it has this really strong history, which is lost a lot of times now that hip hop
is huge and commercialized. But I think that for me, what initially appealed to me was the idea of taking your life into your own hands in a way, when you may have thought you couldn't before. Wheebs: Along with the MDC cover, I hear a lot of punk attitude in what you guys do. I think your music could be translated to punk just as easily as it could be to hip hop. The whole vegan thing and a lot of the political stuff kind of ties in with a lot of punk stuff. Jojoboy: Yeah, for sure. Ghalib: Yeah, I think we're definitely not "hip hop" musically, but I think hip hop is the easiest thing for us to be categorized as because our music has sampling, rapping, and beats, and that kind of stuff. It's just the easiest. And I think that hip hop can be anything. ‘Cause we're not punk. We're not pop, necessarily. Wheebs: I heard you guys are looking for a sugar daddy for the band. Ghalib: Yeah. Jojoboy: Yes. Well, I like to make jokes about that, and I really wouldn’t be opposed to it, but I think more than that, what we're looking for is more like a manager-type person. We're doing all the promotion, trying to book our own shows, and trying to make music at the same time. And it's hard to do everything all at once. Mole: What's in store for the future of Juha? Jojoboy: Well, our second album is gonna be called The Bonobo Blueprint. The bonobos are the most peaceful apes you'll ever meet. They're basically a much more civilized society than human beings, a model society. So we've taken that as a theme and we have 13 or 14 songs in the rough done for that. You can expect it in the spring maybe, or summer maybe. It begins with a ghost story called "Shampoo". Juha's album, Polari, is available at Miracles Bookery in Makawao, Requests Music in Wailuku, and online at www.juhamusic.com Send music to be reviewed to Mole & Wheebs; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768. The Mole is an MC/producer and owner of Motion Recordings (www.motionrecordings.com). Tang Li Wheebs makes rather noisy and occasionally cute music and kind of keeps track of Snail On A Stick Records (www.snailonastick.com).

For three and a half months, this guy and I have been spending every spare second together. We have great fun, laugh constantly, and have a great time in bed. He calls constantly, cooks me dinner, and he's always holding my hand. He even accompanied me to my brother's wedding. The problem is, he's never told me how he feels about me. Not a word. Nothing. I'd like to know what's going through his head, but I don't want to scare him. Should I ask him how he feels? Sweet Nothing At All

The full moon takes you from darkness to light. Christmas is best with siblings, cousins and close friends. LEO: The full moon has a way of taking your social life and turning it into a strange, yet familiar dream. Your imagination flourishes with the winter solstice. Helping others as you help yourself is a way of life for you. Christmas holds unique material blessings. VIRGO: Current lunar conditions reveal social opportunities that are related to your career. The winter solstice gives the green light for a month of creative exuberance. With Christmas on a Virgo Moon you can expect to be in the middle of everything. LIBRA: The communication/mobility season is about to close and with winter solstice, the nesting season is about to begin. The full moon cheers you on as you take risks and display your best abilities. Christmas stirs old memories and gets you in touch with the spiritual. SCORPIO: Invoke the writer and poet within. On Christmas tell stories that involve the people you love. The full moon will stimulate you with the dangerous and the exotic. The winter solstice brings you closer to your friends and closer to nature. SAGITTARIUS: Go out with a bang. Celebrate the winter solstice and the grand finale of your season. The full moon provides intense romance. Christmas will demand much of your talents and skills. Somehow you end up in better shape than you hoped. CAPRICORN: The full moon will help address long standing health issues. Work related challenges are likely. The winter solstice welcomes Capricorn season. The gloom will be lifted. There's a wake-up call for all Capricorns. This Christmas bring in the light. Crack a smile. AQUARIUS: The full moon could lead to one of those secret gift exchanges. By winter solstice you'll be aware of the karma that’s brewing. It's time to harvest your dreams. Christmas may take on a more adult theme. You'll be surprised by your own passions. PISCES: What begins as a full moon dream reincarnates into a full-blown creative project. The winter solstice brings invitations to partnership deepening. You'll be a peacemaker this Christmas. Your good listening skills will gain you favor with others. Got astrology questions or comments? e-mail kozmickev@sunset.net
Men who aren't drag queens do not sit around comparing enlarged pores with their guy friends while getting the lowdown on that new lipstick with the staying power of latex house paint. That's because men are not merely hairy women with flat chests and jutting chins. Likewise, contrary to what that wacky Sigmund Freud said about penis envy, women aren't running around all broken up about not having a penis. Please. Like we need yet another accessory to leave behind in restaurants next to our forgotten sunglasses and cell phones. That said -- if a portable penis came with a variety of removable face plates, and a selection of carrying cases to match all of our shoes and bags...quick -- somebody stop me before I get into custom ring-tones. Now, maybe you're such a loser that your friends and family took up a collection and hired this guy to stick with you, or maybe it's just one of the conditions of his parole. But, if you're pretty sure he's "spending every spare second" with you of his own volition, maybe the thing that needs the most examination is your head. Like a lot of women's heads, it's swirling with the expectation that men should express affection exactly like a woman would: That big blobs of mush must fall from their mouths when they talk, kind of like they're spitting up their Cream of Wheat. Oh yeah, and that love means loading up a dump truck with chocolates, flowers, and carats on Valentine's Day, National Turnip Appreciation day, and any other holidays Hallmark stamps a retail value on. If you can convince a guy to talk truth about this, he'll probably tell you that men fork that stuff over on the appointed days mainly because women will drop-kick them into Doghouseville if they don't. Oooh, sing along with me: "Isn't It Romantic?"... While men can give the impression that they've mastered complex language, their natural vocabulary is more along the lines of "Me hungry. Me horny. Me tired. Where's the remote?’ If a guy's having fun with you, chances are, he'll stick around for extended fun, and maybe even tumble into love with you. Again, the way you tell it, this guy's feet are up on your coffee table, scampering around your kitchen, and poking out from your comforter. In other words, maybe there's no need to make your relationship feel like Monday morning in a law school contracts class. (For a man, this generally involves a woman demanding, "Where is this going?" about 20 minutes after "it" got started.) On the Fun Scale, this is right up there with offers by doctors to "slip a pair of latex gloves on and have a little 'peek' at the ole prostate." Man: "Thanks, doc, but if I'm looking for fun, I'll get a bikini wax -- providing PMS isn't keeping me home with cramps, crying over movies of the week on Lifetime."
