LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR ON RECORD Just for the record…the man who sucker punched me wasn’t the “tourist” after all. The truth is to characterize this person as a “sucker puncher” or insinuate he was a coward when he left the scene was a mistake. Furthermore I now know that there was no ‘confession’ to the police, there was however an “apology” but not for defending his principals and dignity, instead from what I realize now, for allowing himself to be drawn into this petty dispute. More often than not these incidents have their origins in misunderstandings. It is more likely I misunderstood the man and wife with whom I engaged in this altercation. What is important is their intent was misconstrued and my reaction to it was a lot more than they expected and in retrospect more than the situation called for. Only a microsecond of poor decision making stands between a situation we could have all had a nice laugh about and a life changing altercation. I received my “apology” but it wasn’t offered as a weapon to deflect the stupidity of my adversaries. It was offered with the most noble of intent and not for reasons my original letter would imply. To twist it into a defense mechanism in public proclamation was a horrible mistake on my part and for this I truly apologize to the man and his wife who deserved better. Doyle LaCount, Lahaina

Joseph J. Gonzales, Sr., asks if I think I "know more than our president and military experts about wars" (Maui News, 11/18/02). Actually, I was going by a higher authority, the One who said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (Matthew 5: 9). I respect Mr. Gonzales, who says he is a 100% disabled veteran. He was willing to suffer for what he thought was right. I invite him to stop by and talk, next time he sees me out there holding a sign that says "Grandmothers for Peace". When Palestinians and Israelis, Catholics and Protestants, Serbs and Bosnians, Muslims and Christians, and disabled veterans and those demonstrating for peace, can talk together, respect each other, and reach for a higher truth together, then we will all have peace. REUSING GROCERY BAGS RESULTS IN PEACE OF MIND A few months ago, my husband and I made a small change to change our shopping habits. We began re-using our grocery bags. We felt that we could no longer afford the convenience of single-use plastic bags after finding that neither plastic processor on island was equipped to separate plastic bags and make sure they got re-used or recycled. Because plastic bag recovery is a challenging process, only .7% are recycled in America. Each year, the remaining 5.6 bil-

lion bags are thrown away. That’s 40,000 tons of plastic which takes up 4,418 million cubic yards of landfill space! We started changing our habits by bringing our grocery bags back into the store when we shopped. Many grocery stores gave a 5 cent credit for each bag we re-used. Next, we began asking for paper instead of plastic. When our paper bags got old, we recycled them with our cardboard. Later, we bought cotton grocery bags, which are available at many of the stores. When those bags get dirty, we throw them into the washing machine. In the future, we plan to keep our old linen out of the landfill by sewing it into produce bags. The hardest part about making this change was remembering to bring our bags into the store. We had to re-train ourselves by walking back to the car for our bags when we forgot. The benefit to us is peace of mind from knowing that we aren’t contributing plastic bags to Maui’s Central Landfill. Camille Armantrout, Makawao

WHERE’S THE NON PARTISANS? The vote for Maui County Council Chair was a disturbing show of partisan politics by Riki Hokama and Dain Kane. The people of Maui County voted to get rid of partisan politics by changing the county charter so all local races are non political. This was to allow people, not political parties, to be served first. It seems that Riki and Dane and others on the council are above the wishes of the Maui voters. They embody the politics of political bosses and dictatorial policies - in essence saying to other Democrats on the council – get aboard our way of thinking – or you will be left out. This is a back-slide from what people wanted when they just voted for a new Mayor. It steps on all of our hopes for a council that will work for the good of us all. Now we will see them using fear and intimidation as tools to insure a narrow platform of ideas will prevail. When ex-governor Ariyoshi spoke at the council inauguration – he spoke as the leader in the old school of intimidation – and as the spokesman for Seibu – Makena Resort development. They want Makena Resort to be built, and to run Dain Kane for Mayor in 4 years. The best way do it is to insure he is the head of the council so he can go against every forward looking idea that Alan Arakawa will have – all just because Alan is a Republican. Maui County will lose because Maui Council Democrats cannot work as team players. If this is what these people stand for, they are not the Democrats my father before me and I have voted for over the years. Maui County deserves better. Charmaine Tavares won the largest popular vote of all council members; all public testimony was in favor of her and the new Mayor wanted to work with her. Thanks for the betrayal of our values, Riki and Dain - all for gains for your small and narrow part of the Democratic Party and the power elite that you serve. I do hope that the new Democrats can stop your need for raw power, and put all of Maui County citizens first. It is blatantly evident you won’t do it yourselves. Zain Bohlool, Haiku

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

TOO MUCH EGGNOG I always feel a little torn about this time of year. On one hand, the holidays are over, but on the other hand, that also means football season is wrapping up. As far as the holiday thing goes, I must admit that I'm not too sad to see it end. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a mean old scrooge, but the mad rush usually associated with buying all my presents at once, and usually with one day to spare, is something I can do without. I must admit though, I'm probably one of the laziest shoppers around. It's so bad that when I went to Borders to pick out some CD's for my girlfriend, I ended up doing all my shopping right there in that complex. That way I could get everyone off my list and not have to change parking spaces! Then again, maybe laziness is just a higher form of efficiency. So the holidays are over which is good because the hassles are out of the way, but the end of football season is nothing short of a dark cloud on the horizon. I personally think that the start of College Bowl Season should be a major holiday. Hell, everybody's getting sick of Christmas anyway and there are so many atheist objections to displays of Nativity Scenes, that pretty soon we'll all just be saying Happy Bowl Season rather than Merry Christmas. Granted, there are more bowl games than any sane individual truly needs, but bowl season is the one time when I can tell my girlfriend that the “Friends” episode that she's already seen 20 times is not going to be seen for the 21st. And have her actually listen. Speaking of bowl games, that national championship game between Ohio State and U. of Miami is going to go down as one of the all-time greatest. The U. of Miami is like the L.A. Lakers. Unless you live there or went there, you just naturally root against them because they're too cocky, regardless of how

good they are. They're so cocky that some of their ex-players that are now in the NFL sent out flyers a full two weeks before the game advertising a post-victory national championship party in Tempe following the game! Nice style, Miami, your ex-players jinxed your chances. Luckily, the NFL is going to be around for almost another month so we don't have to suffer through complete football withdrawals. And if the first weekend of NFL playoffs is any indication, the 2002-03 postseason will be just as interesting as the collegiate national championship game, especially if Terrell Owens sticks around. This guy is a pure knucklehead. One of the best receivers in the game but with the brain of a child. First he endears himself to the world a few seasons ago by rushing to the opponent's emblem at mid-field to celebrate a touchdown. Then, this year, he pulls a pen out of his sock on the field and autographs a ball for someone sitting in the stands. And then this weekend, he almost costs his team the game with two stupid flagrant penalties late in the game. He keeps saying that he's just having fun and he can't understand why people have a problem with him. I say that "just having fun" is something a kid in junior high says after he gets caught doing something stupid on a Friday night. "Just having fun" works when you're 13, not when you're 30. Unless you're Ozzy, of course. Did you see the advertisement for the American Music Awards? It seems that Ozzy and family are going to be hosting the show, a bold move by the producers, I must say. It's almost getting uncomfortable though. Ozzy is a legend in the music world and to see him reduced to a caricature of himself is not fitting. He can't even talk anymore, a fact the ads for the show plainly capitalized on. When his show The Osbournes comes back on, they should rename it "Married w/ Children - Ozzy style.” But I guess with the holidays over and football season on the way out, maybe having Ozzy host the AMA's won't be so bad. It will at least give us another goofball to watch once Terrell Owens leaves the stage.

To the Rock Thrower, On the night of December 28th, my brother was diving in the waters off of the Lahaina Pali. During his dive, someone hit him in the head with a rock. Naturally, this person wasn’t man enough to allow himself to be seen, being the coward that you are! Perhaps someone can read this for you because I really question the intelligence of a person who would do that. How would you feel about it if it were your brother, uncle, cousin or if it was you in the water with a bloody gash in your head? All because of some dumb-ass who throws rocks! At least try to think about your actions the next time you pick up a rock. Also, remember, what comes around goes around! One way or another, you will answer for this. NEWSCOMMENTARY

Weird Walking on Maui I'm walking on the side of Kaahumanu Ave, wishing I wasn't. Four lanes of traffic charge up and down that sucker, and the pollution is fierce, all sorts: air, noise, and aroma. Cars, SUV’s, light trucks, earsplitting motorcycles all blast by. Garbage trucks stink to high heaven, as noisy as they are putrid. Trucks, buses and other super heavyweights add to the diesel stink and deafening decibels. In the armor of our air-conditioned vehicles, we never notice all this. I was not a happy walker. It sucks out there, about as far from paradise as you can get. Earlier I had sold my car, a momentous decision on Maui. Not selling the wheels, but not having a new set in place—rideless on a rock without public transportation. Things got weird standing in line at the bank to deposit the check I’d gotten for my car. My mind was planning ahead...out

of the bank, into my car and down to Kahului via Vineyard...oops, no car. It was like going from nice digs to homeless, instantly. Not a positive feeling, but I'm open to exploring different modes of transportation. I could have taken a taxi to the Maui Marketplace but I decided to walk, figuring it’s a 30-minute piece of cake, all downhill or flat. I set out, joining the ranks of Weird Walkers. That's what I call everyone on Maui who hoofs it. If you don't have a car or other vehicle on Maui, you're weird. Gotta at least have a bicycle. You can't miss the regular walkers around town and the island, they stick out like penguins. They may not all be weird, but that's the label I hung on them years ago and I'm sticking to it. Today I am one of them. There's only one route, Maui's Boulevard of Infinite Red Lights, Kaahumanu Avenue. Walking gives you a dramatically different slant on things, like the fearsome traffic rush

BY JEROME KELLNER

and nonstop onslaught of pollution. But it's interesting. You get to check the scenery, including the motorists. Everyone is going somewhere important, but not nearly fast enough, particularly on bloody maddening Kaahumanu Ave. Stopped at one of the Infinite Red Lights, most of the drivers’ faces have that grim, I’m-stuck-at-another-damned-red-light look, madly tapping the steering wheel or dragging impatiently on cancer sticks. People on bicycles are desperate or just plain crazy. Bless them for their commitment to air quality, but Maui is no longer a bicycle friendly place, if it ever was. I stopped riding on the road here years ago, and it's only gotten more insane for bicyclists ever since. I call them Bonkers Bikers, and pray for their protection. Mopeds ride a mad world between bicycles and motorcycles, darting through the gutter lanes, wringing out every last rpm, always disastrously close to getting crushed. I recall hearing that one of the chief methods of moving Maui's massive amounts of crystal methamphetamine is through guys on mopeds, and it’s easy to believe. The entire way, I see litter, fast food opala, tobacco butts, plastic, trash, endless organic and inorganic road waste that you never notice from a car. And sights like the canals that run through the Kahului industrial area. From a car you never see these green rivers afloat with drowned bikes, car tires, bird carcasses, pvc pipe, snaking like toxic tapeworms through the cityscape. Even though it's winter, by mid-journey I'm so hot I might as well be walking on the sun. Walkers experience encounters with the homeless, because so many of Those Without Shelter are walkers themselves. We see them from our cars, just as we catch glimpses of Weird Walkers, Bonkers Bicyclists and the Methamphetamine Moped Delivery Crew.

It's easy to pay them little mind driving by, but walking is another story. On Kamehameha Ave. I spy the Kahului Bushman, a gentleman who's hung out in Kahului the past couple of years. He has a shopping cart stacked so high with stuff that it resembles an offshore drilling rig. Today he's cooling under the shade of some trees, and I shot across the street, to avoid a weird encounter, or getting hit on for a handout, whatever. By now I’d lost my adventurous bent. I was hot, tired and my feets were aching. Forty-five minutes from Wailuku and I felt old, with another mile to go. Old people you notice much more acutely as a walker, and I pray for them, too. If you're a pedestrian, particularly a senior one, every street crossing could be your last. Crosswalks are scarce, many streets are wide, and everybody's driving like a bat out of hell. One older pedestrian crossed a wide street at the same time as me. She was at least 80, but still had the juice to reach the far side before the oncoming traffic smacked her silly. She understood road rule number one: there is no mercy. I made it to Maui Marketplace after about an hour's walk. Sweating, beat, and brutalized, I drag myself into the juice joint. It is airconditioned, and I gladly sit and savor my drink. I make a note to see if this company is publicly traded, because I'm buying stock if it is. They have come up with a formula to get four dollars or more out of every single person that comes within walking distance of their door, it's incredible. The women working there are the hardest-working crew I have seen in my whole life, I swear. I’ll check on all that right after I locate some sort of wheels: a car, truck, motorcycle, moped, bike, an offshore oil rig on wheels, anything. This walking weirdness is for the birds.

New Sounds in an Ancient Forest Flying into the hearts of children

By Judy Edwards 8

JANUARY 9, 2003

COVER STORY

Few of Maui’s residents wander into emerald Iao Valley on daily or even weekly business. The road does not technically “go anywhere”, and in fact terminates at a State Park after hugging Kepaniwai Heritage Park and spanning Iao stream. Unless they have guests on-island and are touring them around, few kama’aina make their way very often along the tree-shaded road that meanders curvaceously around the bases of the crumpled green skirts of the mountain. And that’s just too bad, because this is one mountain with a beating heart. The apparent silence of Iao Valley is deceptive. You see, in this mountain stronghold—once holy ground, once battlefield—there is a whole new dynamic. Where once walked ali’i, kahuna and warrior, now there walk—and hike, and climb and play and marvel: children, lots of them. Many more perhaps than you would expect. In fact, at the Hawaii Nature Center in Iao Valley 5,000 school kids laugh, climb, and LEARN yearly. Surprised? The Nature Center is one of Maui’s inadvertent best-kept secrets.

Even the parents of children who have been brought to the Center year after year by their schools sometimes have a fuzzy idea of where the Hawaii Nature Center might be, or what it does. Five thousand children on Maui know. That’s a mountain full of little heartbeats and brains, a mighty responsibility for the educators of the Center, who teach the school field trip programs offered here. The Hawaii Nature Center is a private nonprofit, incorporated on Oahu in 1981 in Makiki Valley and organized on Maui roughly ten years ago. It purchased the old Iao Lodge above the county park, which had been many things until finally falling into disrepair. Idealistic, energetic and determined staff gutted interiors and grounds and started over, literally, from the soil up. What had been the restaurant and pool of the Lodge became the Interactive Nature Museum with its fresh water fish tanks and Gift Shop, stone floors cut from Big Island lava and glass-enclosed solarium. What had been a pair of two-story buildings with hotel

rooms became a spartan office with one whole computer, a colorful classroom with a built-in lava tube and “stone” seats under a sheltering indoor tree, and storage. Trails were cleared or neatened. The bridge over Iao stream, then just a large pipe with a minimalist metal grating walkway on it and used mainly by those who worked on the irrigation systems, was partially enclosed and made safe for little people. Native plants were installed with the hope that, perhaps one day, the native forest birds on the high ridges keeping watch over the valley might be tempted to fly down, investigate and possibly forage. O’opu, hihiwai and opae were introduced to new homes in tanks. Banners and signs went up and the doors swung open into the rain-clean air. Gleefully the kids started arriving. The first year of official operation—School Year 19921993—introduced the concepts of the Hawaii Nature Center to over four thousand schoolchildren. Obviously, programs such as these had been long overdue and were immediately embraced by public and private schools-Hawaiian language immersion schools, Christian academies, and home-schools— alike. Teachers in Hawaii, mindful of the precarious ecological situation, work as much environmentally aware curriculum into their lessons as standards and time allow. However, it is only during a day spent at the Nature Center that the biological focus can be so intense and so completely immersive. Also, there is no substitute for hands-on, all-senses learning. Talking to a child about rain or erosion in a classroom is useful…to a point. But most of us learn much more completely, ingest concepts much more thoroughly, when pre-

sented with them in 3-D Real Time. Most of us, at any age, learn more from the mountains by spending time in them than we would by spending the same amount of time reading about them. So, for children and their rapidly growing brains, the value of a day spent in the light-filled, stream-braided valleys of West Maui is enormous and probably immeasurable. A classroom can do much, but Nature’s classroom never ceases to amaze, engage, and tantalize. And, hopefully, galvanize. Today, many teachers tell the Center that coming there is the highlight of their teaching year. And with prices for everything, including bus transportation, rising and rising all over the islands, the fact that the Nature Center is still a priority for schools is an indicator of the intrinsic perceived value of its programs and the dedication and commitment of the educators there. Denby Freeland is the current Program Manager and Judy Edwards, Cathy Morrell and Ellen Klemmer are Educators. John Soliven and Jerold Suarez are the glue that holds the physical structures of the site together, keeping the old buildings maintained in the damp mountain air, and coaxing the grounds into a meticulous lushness. A few lucky souls who love the earth, respect the sacredness of children, and get to put their money where their mouths are. The Hawaii Nature Center’s educators work diligently all year to unfold the many mysteries of the living Earth before the wide eyes of Hawaii’s schoolchildren. They are aware, these wily educators, that once a person really understands how someone or something works, its wheres and whys, its insides and outsides, it becomes nearly impossible to ignore that thing, and even less likely that a

person would harm that thing. In fact, educated human beings seem to like to take responsibility. Human beings educated in the intricate systems of the earth are likely to become stewards of it—or at least are more likely than they would have been, had their eyes never been opened to the fascinating secrets tucked all over this planet they call home. The Hawaii Nature Center’s environmental school field trip programs are award winning. They have received recognition from the Department of the Interior, the American Association of Museums, and the United Nations Environment Programme. Additionally, the Nature Center’s programs have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education’s Eisenhower Regional Consortia as a Promising Practice in math and science education—one of only two programs in Hawai’i to be so honored. The goals of the Nature Center are to help students develop a life-long curiosity about nature, and to reinforce basic environmental concepts. In this endeavor there is the unparalleled palette of rumpled, verdant Iao Valley in which to work toward these goals. The programs are varied, and like all vibrant live things they keep growing. At the moment the Center has school field trip programs on the Center grounds for grades Preschool through 4th grade. Third graders get an especially eye-opening program that takes them to Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge and introduces them to the marvelous complexity and wildlife of wetland systems. This is done with the cooperation of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department in collaboration with gracious Refuge Manager Glynnis Nakai. For 5th grade and on through Junior High, the Center utilizes its Interactive Nature Museum for ecology information treasure hunts and bio-brainteaser worksheets that are solved by the students working in groups. They buzz around the Museum on the hunt for information—a hunt so absorbing that the students often aren’t aware that this fun thing they do is called learning. The Museum contains over 30 hands-on exhibits that allow children (of all ages!) to fly like a dragonfly, eavesdrop on the hunting habits of the world’s only carnivorous caterpillar, and test their knowledge of native and introduced natural systems in Hawaii with various game boards, a small laboratory, and interactive displays. Additionally, the Museum plays host to travelling exhibits. The finalists of science fair contests have been displayed here in the glorious light of the solarium, as have photo installations of Hawai’i’s native forest birds. In February, the Museum will host Liittschwager and Middleton’s acclaimed Remains Of The Rainbow traveling photo installation, something that no child or adult living in Hawaii should miss for its technical artistry in the field of photography and its significance to the understanding of Hawaiian ecology. Add to all of that the birthday parties, weekend fairs, teacher workshops, holiday events, weekend classes and tour groups that also make use of the facilities, and you’ve got a full plate for the staff of ten humans that holds the place together and keeps the education fires burning.

COVER STORY

For the staff, the rewards of teaching at the Center are many, and not all necessarily tangible. Some reward comes in the form of praise: visiting teachers tell them that the children look most forward to this particular field trip every year. They say that there is no other program on Maui like it, which is true, and that the children talk about their day at the Center for weeks afterwards. Some comes in the form of staying young at heart by being with young hearts. Interacting with the bright eyes and fresh minds of the children keeps the educators’ eyes bright, too. Some rewards are the feelings of satisfaction one gets when an idea finds fertile ground in a new mind. One never knows, when teaching, what will stick or why. Evidence that something got in after all, and grew roots there, comes when the letters from the classes arrive in the weeks after the field trips. Children write that they want to come back and live at the Center, that they went home and told their moms that worms don’t bite, that they now understand what recycling is and why it’s good, and that they will never squish a bug for no reason again. And on a program day just recently one child stated, with a very serious face for his 5 years: “Life is very fragile. Do you know how fragile life is?” Maui’s marvelous multi-cultural beauties are its children. What they know of the Nature Center has nothing to do with the work of finding funding, maintaining buildings or staff, or the mountain of small headaches and hurdles that all non-profits face in order to stay viable and afloat. The children are blissfully unaware of the size of the looming ecological crisis hidden in the things they take for granted—a nonnative reptile that’s fast-reproducing and threatening native species. Or, beautiful, fragrant blooms on plants that are systematically choking out native forest systems. Children play with the mosquito fish and swordtails, not knowing that the fish, shrimp and snails that filled Maui’s mountains’ streams for a million years have been pushed out in less than a hundred years. The stakes are high in Hawaii and there has been a lot of loss. What lights the candles of hope for the staff of the Nature Center is the belief that the work they do, dressed up in smiles and good days in the sweet air, is also the careful and methodical work of creating advocates for a fragile, blessed and beleaguered island chain—one wide-eyed, pure-hearted child at a time. For the kids it’s all about draping over the boulders of the stream, agog at the clear jelly cluster of snail’s eggs, the soft green strings of algae, clear water rippling over red and grey stones. It’s about standing on the bridge high above the stream with eyes closed, smiling into the wind. For the children of Maui who visit the Nature Center, what the Nature Center IS is the best day they’ve had all year. They write it in the letters time and again. And as they file into the big yellow bus that will take them back to Kihei, Pukalani, Lahaina, or even Molokai, they always ask the educators the same question: “Can I come back?” The green arms of Iao Valley and the doors of The Hawaii Nature Center are always open for them…with a little luck, continued community support and fortuitous funding. Come see. It was never meant to be a secret.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES His Own "Head Start" Program: A 7year-old Minneapolis boy stole an SUV on Dec. 6 and crashed into several things, and then, after attempts by the police and his guardian to explain to him why stealing cars was wrong, he stole another one on Dec. 17 and hit another vehicle, injuring a boy riding with his mother. His two reported explanations were, respectively: "I want to be a good driver when I grow up," and "I just had to get to school and I don't know where it is." (According to a hopeful Minneapolis Star Tribune report, experts believe that kids that young who commit crimes are no more than two to three times more likely to turn into violent criminals.) In a December New York Times dispatch from Jidda, Saudi Arabia, concerning the heavily religious-law-regulated Perdu lingerie shop, its female marketing director said that about 85 percent of Saudi women wear ill-fitting bras, perhaps because the law requires that sales clerks in public stores be men. According to the Times, "(W)hile women may be berated for showing a ... leg or an arm (in public), they must ask strange men for help in assessing their bra size."

IRONIES Two men who have sat on juries in notoriously litigation-friendly Jefferson County, Miss., filed a lawsuit against the TV program "60 Minutes" in December, claiming that they were defamed in a segment about Mississippi juries' generosity. Anthony Berry was on a jury that gave out $150 million in an asbestos case, and Johnny Anderson was on one that awarded $150 million in a diet drug case, and both say the "60 Minutes" segment made the juries seem so extravagant that they must be getting kickbacks. The two men's lawsuit (filed in Jefferson County, of course) asks for more than $6 billion. -- The president of Baptist-affiliated Gardner-Webb University (Boiling Springs, N.C.) admitted in September that he raised a star basketball player's gradepoint average so that he would be eligible to play in the 2000-2001 season, during which Gardner-Webb won the National Christian College Athletic Association championship. (The president, Christopher White, resigned in October; the class that the player failed, for cheating, but which was not counted on his GPA, was in religion.)

WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND Following a Detroit Free Press interview in November with bulk e-mailer Alan Ralsky (who gloated that his success at sending "spam" advertising had paid for his $740,000 home), Internet spam-haters tracked down Ralsky's West Bloomfield, Mich., address and inundated him with thousands of unsolicited hardcopy catalogs

and mailings. In another case, following news that the Pentagon had hired former Reagan administration official John Poindexter to oversee the creation of software that could track nearly all consumer transactions in the country, an SF Weekly (San Francisco) columnist released Poindexter's home phone number, and Internet activists set up a Web site for tracking all of Poindexter's personal transactions.

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US In November, Jason Morris, 30, was acquitted by a jury in Greater Manchester, England, of the charge that, using ordinary pliers, he pulled out 18 of his girlfriend's teeth, leaving her covered head to toe in blood. The case turned when the girlfriend, Samantha Court, 25, took the witness stand and admitted that she pulled the teeth out herself, during an April drug binge during which she tried to get rid of a green and pink fly that had darted down her throat. Court said the couple has decided to stop doing drugs.

LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE In 2001, a woman filed a federal lawsuit in Minnesota (Engleson vs. Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce), seeking to recover for injuries she suffered when she tripped over an orange traffic cone. The lawsuit was dismissed in November 2002 by Judge Donovan Frank, who said the law does not expect anyone to warn people that there's a warning cone up ahead.

UPDATES ON RECENT NEWS OF THE WEIRD STORIES In November 2001, News of the Weird reported on a language its practitioners called The Truth (but which is basically indistinguishable from gibberish), which at that time a few Canadian defendants were using in tax-evasion trials (with a huge lack of success). In December 2002, Janet Kay Logan, 46, and Jason Zellmer, 22, were convicted in Madison, Wis., of creating phony lawsuit documents, despite their using The Truth in their trial and attempting to call as a witness the language's creator, David Wynn Miller, also known as the "king of Hawaii," who informed the judge that the genesis of The Truth was when Miller "turned Hawaii into a verb" and showed "how a preposition is needed to certify a noun." Logan insisted until the very end that the lawsuits were legitimate because she is a judge in the "DI-STRICT court of the Unity State of the World."

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ... A carjacker made off with a Honda Civic following a struggle, but he did leave behind his colostomy bag, which fell off in the fight (St. Albert, Alberta). Two hours after a TV news crew visited a candle shop to interview the owner about holiday fire safety, a faulty candle in the shop started a blaze that gutted four businesses (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The University of Magdeburg yielded to longtime demands of the daughters of the late 1970s Red Army terrorist Ulrike Meinhof and gave back Meinhof's brain, which it had commandeered after her 1976 suicide (Koln, Germany).

Quiksilver Masters 2003 EVENT TO BE HELD AT HISTORIC MAKAHA, HAWAII A rare gathering of legends and world champions are to return to the waters of surfing’s origins in tribute to a sport and lifestyle and testimony that surfing is for life. Quiksilver announces the 2003 Quiksilver Masters World Surfing Championship will be held next month at the historic Makaha break on the Westside of Oahu, Hawaii. Throughout the 1950s and ´60s Makaha hosted the most famous surfing event in the world, the Makaha International, and since then, the venue has hosted but a handful of major events. Makaha legend and surfing icon Buffalo Keaulana said today he welcomed the return of surfing´s pioneer professionals to his beach. "We started off here with the International and it will be good to have something like that back at Makaha again," commented Buffalo Keaulana. "I've been speaking to people about having the Masters here and they'd rather see that contest here than any other kind of event. I'll be happy to see the Masters surf in

Hawaii, too. It will be great for the kids down here to get to see these guys surf." The announcement of the Makaha venue followed Quiksilver´s decision to postpone the planned Masters event in Safi, Morocco, until 2004. "The new schedule for the Moroccan Masters places it perfectly as the climax of our plans for surfing events in Morocco," said Quiksilver Europe president Bernard Mariette. "The people of Morocco have been extremely generous in their support of us, and we look forward to a long involvement in the development of surfing there." Quiksilver Europe co-founder and president of Quiksilver International Harry Hodge said he was delighted that the surfing community of Makaha had offered to host the 2003 Masters. "Buffalo Keaulana and his family have had a long association with Quiksilver and it´s great to see them and all of Makaha extending the spirit of aloha to the Masters." The $120,000 Makaha Quiksilver Masters will feature 17 world champions within an elite field of 32 of the best surfers in the world over the age of 35. Guided Imagery at Kaiser BY JEROME KELLNER

A guided imagery experience uses wisdom from two very different masters—Albert Einstein and Bruce Lee. Imagination, Einstein said, is more important than knowledge. The more relaxed you are the faster and more powerful you will be, martial arts master Lee taught. Imagination and relaxation are two keys to guided imagery, one selfhelp strategy that has found a niche in complementary medicine. A free Guided Imagery workshop is being offered January 29 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente, Wailuku, facilitated by Nathan Cutler. Guided imagery can be used to relieve stress, achieve deep relaxation, explore psychological conflicts, and empower individuals in any area they choose. “This is something anyone can do, and benefit from,” Cutler said. “It’s for anyone, but particularly people in stressful jobs, where frustration and other types of stress are high.” The results of the experience are overwhelmingly positive, pleasurable, and powerful. “I was astounded by the short amount of time it took to go into very deep relaxation,” said Christina Fisher, an Olinda resident who recently experienced Cutler’s class. “You feel the results immediately. I didn’t want to come back (from the relaxed state).” The immediate benefits and the fact that it can be used almost any time are two reasons why guided imagery has found a place in complementary medicine. Last year Blue Cross added it to its complementary health care programs, and Kaiser Permanente is the latest health organization on Maui to offer it. Cutler, a licensed professional counselor, has been teaching guided imagery for more than 27 years, including experiences at Kaunoa Senior Center, Maui AIDS Foundation and Beyond Heaven in Makawao. To register for the free class at Kaiser on Jan. 29 in Wailuku, call Kaunoa Senior Services at 270-7308. For a workshop tailored to your facility and staff, call Nathan Cutler at 269-0080.

Whether you’re surfing, sailing, kiting, or just splashing around in the waves, Kuau Mart has just what you need for a quick refuel on the run. Kuau Mart is a small family owned and operated convenience store on Hana Hwy.,

just around the corner from world famous Hookipa Beach Park. They offer ice-cold sodas, beer, wine, juice and water along with chips, candies, and other standard kind munchies, but the fresh, hot food in their mini-steam table is what makes this place special. owner/operator Leona Bak Nomura. I get the feeling she’s developed a finely honed instinct for predicting the appetites of her clientele, responding to cues much too subtle for you and I to comprehend. Average temperature, relative humidity, size and quality of the surf, and who knows what other factors form an equation for her that always equals just the right meal to scratch your particular stomach-rumbling itch. Succulent, falling-off-the-bone Teriyaki Chicken is one item you will usually find on her menu. At other times you’ll see local style staples like Chili and Rice with Cheese, Hamburger Steak with gravy, Breaded Fish, Macaroni and Cheese, and Steamed Stuffed Cabbage. If these don’t suit you, try the Swedish Meatballs, Beef Lasagna, or my favorite, the Chicken Vegetable Lasagna with White Sauce. Don’t forget the dogs! Kuau Mart serves only all-beef Jumbo Hot Dogs in buns that are locally baked and delivered fresh every day. All the condiments are available: ketchup, mustard, relish, chopped onions, jalapenos, and Leona’s own super secret sauce. Don’t even try, she’s not giving up the recipe. If you’re not a big hot dog fan, that’s okay because Leona will slide a piece of breaded fish right into that fresh bun. Add a dollop of secret sauce and BAM, the world’s best (and only?) fish dog! Fresh California rolls, Maki, and Cone Sushi are also delivered fresh daily by Miyako Sushi. Just a splash of shoyu and you’ve got a quick, delicious bite sized snack on your way to work. Or stop by early in the morning for fresh coffee and pastries, hit the water, and come back for round two in the afternoon. No matter which way you slice it, Kuau Mart fits right into your day. Life is made of schedules, agendas, and lofty goals, but sometimes you just have to slow down. Next time you drive by Kuau Mart and see the boys lined up in a row on the bench out front, dripping salt water and grinding good food, remember that you could be one of them, snatching a moment of Maui Time.

Williams-Selyem Winery ‘99 Russian River Valley, Pinot Noir

$79.99

Williams-Selyem Winery’s ’99 Pinot Noir, from the Russian River Valley in California, is our wine pick this week! Originally from Burgundy, France, this classic varietal is light in body but full of character. With its big character, it carries many complex layers of taste and smell; it has aromas of earth and mushrooms, and tastes of baked fruit, like cherry and raspberries. This Pinot Noir shows far less tannin than Merlot or Cabernet. Williams-Selyem is a winery out of Healdsburg, California, in the Russian River Valley region, and their main focus is Pinot Noir. Bob Cabral, the wine maker who has been involved in wine for 21 years at various wineries such as DeLoach Vineyards, Kunde Estate and Hartford Court, feels that excellent fruit sources, special attention to hand harvesting and fruit sorting proves to be a powerful way in producing outstanding Pinot Noir. The ‘99 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is made up of various vineyards throughout the region in Sonoma County where they have been sourcing fruit for many years, and is one of the more popular bottlings. This ruby red Pinot has intense flavors of raspberry and strawberry with toasted oak and a floral sweetness in the mouth that lasts on the palate. Williams-Selyem wines can be found at many different restaurants throughout the island.

Maui Symphony Celebration On Monday evening, January 13, the Maui Symphony Orchestra, in celebration of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 244th birthday, will host violinist Rachel Lee, one of the most brilliant child prodigies on the musical scene today. “Rachel Lee is an awesome young musician”, touted symphony director and conductor, Stuart Chafetz. He is not alone in his praise. She won her first competition at the age of six. In 1998, at the age of 10, Rachel Lee was the youngest musician selected to give a recital at the La Jolla (California) Chamber of Music Society’s Prodigy Series. Born in Chicago in 1988, Rachel began her violin studies at the age of four and gave her first public performance that same year. After winning numerous competition awards in the Midwest, she moved to New York to study at the Julliard School at the age of 8. On Monday evening, Rachel, now 14, will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto #3, which was composed by Mozart when he too was just a teenager. “Not only is she an awesome musician, I like the connection of youthful energy between Mozart and Rachel Lee. Rachel is just 14 years old, and Mozart composed the concerto when he was 19”, said Chafetz. “It’s a perfect match for Mozart’s birthday celebration.” Mozart had a mastery of the violin at the age of five with no instruction and only sound for a score. He composed more than 600 pieces during his 35 years of life and according to Albert Einstein, he is the greatest composer of all because, “the music of Mozart is of such purity and beauty that one feels he merely found it – that it has always existed as part of the inner beauty of the universe waiting to be revealed.” Rachel currently studies with Itzhak Perlman and Won Bin Yim at the PreCollege Division of the Julliard School. She has performed at the U.N.’s 50th Anniversary celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, has appeared with Disney’s Young Musicians

Symphony Orchestra, and the 2000 Grammy Awards as well as many other orchestral debuts throughout the USA, and internationally with the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, Korea. On January 13, however, the connection doesn’t stop with Mozart and Lee. It continues with the Korean celebration. One hundred years ago, on January 13, 1903, the first Korean immigrants to the United States came ashore in Hawaii. Rachel Lee is of Korean American heritage. Her family history is an integral part of the story of the Korean immigrants who arrived with the hopes for a better life. Rachel attests to the Korean contribution, not only to America, but also to the world of music, and to the reality of the American dream. “In addition to all of this, Monday night is a celebration of the future. Our commitment with the Maui Symphony has always been to the youth. If we want classical music to live on, we have to continue to reach out to young people,” said Chafetz. To push this music for youth agenda further, Chafetz received a generous grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and Arts. Together with this grant and a partnership participation of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Chafetz created an education series entitled, Music for Life. The third part of this series, “The Color of Music” will also be presented on the morning of January 13, at the MACC. That performance is already sold out to 1,200 students. “It’s very exciting. It’s an outreach to youth and it is being devoured. Students will be introduced to the various instruments and will be asked to imagine what color that instrument might represent. For example, a tuba is a dark color, the piccolo is a light color. The composer is like the artist. The artist uses paint, the composer uses instruments to paint the canvas.”

According to followers of Mozart, listening to Mozart is not only enjoyable, but intellectually beneficial. It is reported that various studies have proven that listening to Mozart helps children think better in abstract terms, pick up languages faster, perform math problems more confidently and solve puzzles more proficiently. The studies went on to show that adults who listen to Mozart before taking examinations perform consistently better. Perhaps Einstein was right about Mozart being able to touch into a universal knowledge. The evening concert with Rachel Lee begins at 7:30pm in the Castle Theater of Maui Arts and Cultural Center. It is also being aired LIVE over Public Radio and stations KAOI and Q103. The program includes three works of Mozart: The Overture to “Don Giovanni”, Violin Concerto #3, and Symphony #35 “Haffner”. In keeping with the spirit of a birthday celebration and gift giving, the Maui Symphony is offering a special ticket sale of buy one and get one free. FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

"Narc" -- A New Reservoir Dogs For 2003 Interview With "Narc" Director Joe Carnahan ) Narc ( Although you may not have heard of director Joe Carnahan ("Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane"), this 32 year-old wunderkind has already become mythologized around Hollywood due to the heavyweight attention that his Detroit cop potboiler "Narc" has attracted. Shortly after wrapping the film under nerve-racking financial pressures, "Narc" picked up a hot buzz among Hollywood's seasoned elite. People like Harrison Ford, Warren Beatty, William Friedkin and Tom Cruise embraced the film as an immediate classic and weren't shy about sharing their opinions. In a genre of cop films that's been done a million times, Carnahan deftly carves his uniquely muscular, humorous and raw character-driven narrative from the inside out. "Narc's" super intense opening chase scene sets a gritty do-or-die tone for the movie that only escalates as undercover drug detective Nick Tellis (Jason Patrick) comes off of a long suspension to investigate the death of an officer killed in the line of duty. Nick is teamed up with renegade cop Henry Oak (Ray Liotta), the dead cop's former partner, to slog through the filthy world of narcotics and come up with an answer that comes at an incredibly high physical and emotional cost to Nick. Liotta and Patrick work at the height of their acting powers, burning up the screen under Carnahan's lean direction. "Narc" is a shocking cop thriller in the vein of movies like "The French Connection" and "Serpico," but with a darker edge that kicks like a 1000-pound mule on 20-pounds of speed trapped inside a burning barn. The movie is one blistering cinematic rollercoaster ride that you will not soon forget regardless of whether or not you appreciate Carnahan's diligent homage to directors like William Friedkin and Sidney Lumet. There's a new sheriff in Hollywood and his name is Joe Carnahan. CS: Where were you when Tom Cruise called you after he fell in love with "Narc?" JC: Well, Harrison Ford called me on May 9th, my birthday. I was running around saying, "Hey Han Solo called me." But with Tom Cruise, I heard that he watched the film and he really loved the film. So they wanted me to go meet Tom Cruise. So I go to the Paramount lot, and Paula Wagner has Lucille Ball's old office, and I go in this conference room with these big double doors. I hear muffled voices on the other side and the double doors start rattling. I realize there's a catch on the other side of the door and it's semi-locked, and they finally rattle enough that -- BOOM - they get flung

Ray Liotta as Judge, Jury & Executioner

open, and there's Cruise with his arms out. The first thing I said to him was, "You can't even walk into a room normally." It was such a movie star entrance. He sits down with me and we talked football, and he just said, "Listen, I really love the movie." And he got the movie on an intellectual level and was picking stuff out of the film that maybe I intended subconsciously, but of course I took credit for at the moment. He basically said to me, "Listen, unofficially, if you need any advice, you tell me what Lion's Gate is going to do, you tell me what their strategy is, and I'll kind of unofficially advise you." We had 21 executive producers on this film - 18 of which, if I ran 'em over in a crosswalk, I wouldn't know who they were. Some I do want to run over. (laughs) I said to Tom, "Why don't you just come on, because you could be of more assistance than some of these executive producers who I'm convinced only got the gig because somebody bummed a cigarette off of them." So they did and they've just been the most amazing support system. Paramount said, "We've got Tom Cruise on this," and everybody loved the film. William Friedkin saw it and he loved it, and they all had this meeting of the minds and said, "Let's do it, let's get behind this film and see what happens. CS: What did William Friedkin say about the movie? JC: Friedkin said to me, "It's the best cop film I've ever seen." And to me he made the best cop film I've ever seen with "The French Connection," so we had this goofball mutual admiration society going. CS: The dialogue in "Narc" struck me

because cop movies are a dime a dozen, but the dialogue here is just stunning. All of it's dead on, and a lot of it is hilarious. How did you nail it so accurately? JC: I've been writing since I was 18 years old -- you write something, you throw it in a closet. So it came from a lot of practice. I kept pounding and kept pounding and, you listen to the way people talk and try to crib that to some extent. You try to make it feel real, and I think I have a decent enough ear that I could sit on a Muni Bus and listen to the way people are talking and get the cadence and slang. And I love writing that way. I love the colloquial American slang. So, knowing I've got to write this scene about Ray talking about his wife, you just put in the things that are special to you. A lot of it is that I get lucky and have actors that can pull it off. CS: How old are you and where did you grow up? JC: I'm 32 and I grew up in Shepherd, Michigan near Detroit, so the Detroit of my youth was going to Tigers' games with my dad and having to hold his wallet so he didn't get pick-pocketed. I always felt that Detroit was the great American City that we gave up on. There's a great sense of loss there. I moved out to California for my freshman year of high school. But I was always kind of on the filmmaking path and I made a film for $7300 ("Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane") that went on the festival circuit. CS: Did you have Ray Liotta and Jason Patrick in mind for their roles when you wrote Narc? JC: I don't ever really write with an actor in

mind because it kind of starts to taint and kind of spoil what you're doing because you think, "Well I've never seen him do that so I won't write it that way." CS: Most of "Narc" was shot in Toronto, but I heard a story that Jason Patrick insisted that you go to Detroit to shoot some of the movie. JC: We both agreed that we could not do this film and not spend at least a day in Detroit. CS: Harrison Ford was one of the first big Hollywood guys to get behind "Narc" before people like Warren Beatty and Tom Cruise gave it their blessing, and now you've got a project with Harrison Ford - what is that? JC: It's called "Walk Among The Tombstones." The only other time this particular character (played by Harrison Ford) has been on screen was "Eight Million Ways To Die" - Jeff Bridges played the same guy. It's a Lawrence Block novel. I told Harrison, "I don't really want to make it as a Harrison Ford film," and he said "Good, 'cause I'm not interested in being in one." So the fact that he's willing to put himself in my less than capable hands is kind of exciting. It's interesting for me to subvert who he is and surround him with actors that I love - like Don Cheadle - and see what happens. CS: What's the basic plotline? JC: Basically, there's guys that are kidnapping the loved ones of drug dealers and then ransoming them back, knowing that the dealers won't call the cops, and that they have disposable incomes. Harrison Ford's character is kind of in the middle between the good guys and the bad guys. CS: "Fight Club" was the end of the last chapter in big cinema violence, and with your movie and Tarantino's upcoming "Kill Bill," violence is coming back into movies hard again. JC: Yeah. The thing is you can't just look at a film for its component parts and say, "This is violent, we shouldn't have this because this is violent." It's the same thing Tarantino said years ago about dance numbers, "If you don't like dance numbers, then don't put them in your movie." You can't do a movie about the drug world and cops traversing through that world and not include violence. What I think we've done with the violence in this movie is made it realistic and made it harsh. It travels like real violence travels. It's not drawn out, it's not slow motion and it's not this balletic (sic) kind of stylized thing. I think it's funny that "Narc" is taking lumps for being violent where "Silence of the Lambs" won Best Picture 12 years ago. You've got a guy cutting the face off of another guy. You've got a guy making a dress out of women's skin. But it's got highbrow; it's got Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, and it's got the Goldberg variations playing in the background lending this kind of classicism that a film like "Narc" is not. If it unnerves you and disturbs you, it's because it's supposed to. But I'm not going to dwell on it. I'm not going to show the hammer hitting the head.

DIFFICULTLISTENING

BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE

Cavemen Speak From the land of Belgium comes Cavemen Speak. Composed of the oddly-named Boring Siaz, dAn & the iDIOt, and The Homesick Nomad, this trio makes some equally odd hip hop music. At least "hip hop" is the closest I can come to classifying their sound, which is a mixture of beautifully awkward singing and mid-tempo rapping over melodic and rustic music. On the heels of the release of their third and latest album, Wooden Cast, I sent some questions to Boring Siaz via e-mail and he responded.

The Mole: Why are you called Cavemen Speak? Boring Siaz: Well, you start off with a difficult question... I think it goes back to the way we used to rap a few years ago... we were supposed to just rhyme over drums and that was it... so we wanted something primitive in the name.. Also we love to go on about stuff that's not really society-related but just purely [based] on feeling... basics are so important. It’s also cool to have a verb in our name, don't you think? The Mole: How are you associated with Shadowanimals? Boring Siaz: The Good People of the Shadowanimalschoir are our best friends. It's sometimes difficult to see the difference between cavemen speak and shadowanimals although we try to keep the two things separate. The Mole: What projects have you been working on lately? Boring Siaz: Well, we finished our first three albums called 'the blindman woke earlier', 'bowl of monkey' and 'wooden cast', which includes the talents of Stacs of Stamina (Sweden), Escape Artists (California) and Artkjll (Finland). This last one is doing pretty well. (All to be found on www.shadowanimals.com). We also play about one show a week in this time of the year, during this winter. We should play together with Sage Francis, Alias, Themselves, Buck65 (for the second time), Boombip, Josh Martinez, Kunga219, Stacs of Stamina, Offwhyte, Qwel and Beans. So the emphasis is on performing right now. dAn & the iDIOt just finished his 'dAn versus the world' CD last week and we all work on new material. Oh yeah, I'm finishing my 20 minute project with Phlegm, Stacs of Stamina, Artkjll, Escape Artists, Phlegm and Kunga219 too. The Mole: What do you love more than anything else? Boring Siaz: I can only speak for myself but it should be food, all kinds. Playing shows and hanging out with the shadowanimals. I could also use a good night’s sleep. The Mole: What is your music about and why do you do it? Boring Siaz: My music is about myself and that’s something I should change in the future. I think I do it cuz I’m 20 and lost in this f*<ked up world. Again I say - changes will be made. The Mole: What are your feelings on hip hop? Boring Siaz: Hip hop is awesome. Rap is my love when it comes to sound. I don't have strong feelings about hip hop like I used to have but it’s still my life whether I want it or not. We rock on. The Mole: What is your musical history? Boring Siaz: Nomad and I started out as a group playing just with drum and I rapping over it. Nomad is a musical genius, he plays every instrument. Around 2 years ago he showed us his secret: he could sing too. DAn & the iDIOt started out in another local band and we fell in love with each others' sound. I still do the same as 5 years ago. The Mole: What is your favorite color? Boring Siaz: Earth tones like warm green and brown.

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE Last year, my boyfriend moved from 300 miles away to live with me. We’ve been together for three years, and I absolutely adore him. Recently, he started a new job, and he acts like he wants me to have nothing to do with his work world. I’ve found some suspicious things, including a page in his notebook with some coworker’s name written all over it in big bubble letters. When I confronted him, he said he was just doodling; he barely speaks to this girl. She’s no threat looks-wise, but I’m still concerned. He goes out after work with his coworkers, and never invites me along. He’s pushing me to go out with my girlfriends more than ever. Also, our sex life has become almost nonexistent. If I ask him about this stuff, he gets angry and defensive. I know this man loves me, and I can’t imagine he would have uprooted his whole life if he were just going to cheat on me...would he? works will get some well-deserved recognition. Apply for a job that feels like you may not be quite qualified for yet sounds fun. In other words, push yourself beyond the status quo of current expectations. TAURUS: Saturday and Sunday feature the moon in Taurus. Get ready for some long overdue rest and relaxation. Be ready to learn deeper truths. You're ready for the advanced course. Out of the confusion and chaos comes extraordinary gifts. GEMINI: When it's cold you're hot and when it's hot you’re cold. You're extra sensitive to the things other people are missing. Your love life is about to get sweeter. Be the kind of love that you would like to have. Make friends with your dark side. CANCER: The tide is rushing out to meet you. Are you and your shipmate ready to meet the sea? You're in a good position to make peace. Make social appearances. People see you as an ideal friend and partner. Pay back the compliment. LEO: Keep a reasonable pace at work. You're a little bit more vulnerable to overexertion. Make sure to get enough sleep. Your love life and creative life will open up. Share your art for the benefit of someone that really can't pay you back. Magic happens. VIRGO: Think of who you are beyond your parent's voice in your head of who you should be. Think of yourself as a wild animal with instinctual knowledge of what needs to be done. You're in a happy-go-lucky state of mind. You're free to love and play. LIBRA: Psychic phenomena, haunted houses, and mother’s advice gets you feeling vulnerable. Your view of the universe is challenged. Continue to be your warm lovable self. Don't let the bastards get you down. It's always darkest before the dawn. SCORPIO: It might be good to listen to a little Neil Young, Joni Mitchell or even Aaron Copeland. It's time to get in touch with your muse. A running stream will teach you about poetry. A volcanic spill will give you respect for your environment. SAGITTARIUS: Look into some financial planning for 2003. You're being asked to take a second look at your resources. You're bound to be happiest when you take a trip somewhere. Female energy is surrounding you and becoming more commonplace. CAPRICORN: The mountain goat needs to climb a mountain to celebrate its season. You've got what it takes to organize a good mud football game. You have an unquenchable lust for pleasure. The weekend will be your playground. AQUARIUS: It would be good to allow someone to lead you around a flower garden while you're blindfolded. You need to be using other senses that you've neglected. You might want to stay at home this weekend to work out domestic issues. PISCES: It's still not too late to throw a party for that Capricorn that you admire. The weekend proves good for any type of social affair. Your head’s in a good space. Visualize the kind of world that you would like to help create in 2003. Doodling somebody’s name in big bubble letters in one’s notebook is totally normal behavior - for a girl in seventh grade with a thousand-pound crush on Justin Timberlake. The next thing you know, your boyfriend will be decorating his power drill with sparkly stickers and stashing Hello Kitty mini-pads in his wallet. His regression is, indeed, cause for concern, as it could indicate the presence of an ‘N Sync-playing tumor pressing on his brain. Chances are, however, that a brain scan will reveal only a girlfriend pressing on his freedom. When applying yourself to a relationship, you should lean more toward simulating unrequited love than personifying soapy buildup. The goal, obviously, is making the person long for you, not making them long to exfoliate you. Please note: Somebody longs for you when you’re stranded in the Baltics, not when you’re off on a rare trip alone to the corner 7-11. This brings us to what’s missing from your relationship; namely, 300 miles separating you from your boyfriend. Now, maybe you don’t need to put a plane ticket between you. You do need to recognize that uninterrupted togetherness is the death rattle of romance. Don’t believe me? Just rewrite a little fiction: Let’s see...Romeo and Juliet get together and move into a tract house in the suburbs, just down the block from Heathcliff and Cathy, Rick and Ilsa, Carrie and Mr. Big. (“Romeo, Romeo...where are the trash can liners?”) Stop expecting your boyfriend to be your everything. He’s a man, not a mall. And you’re a girlfriend, not a mind reader. If he still loves you and wants to be with you, he needs to start forming words about what’s bothering him and inserting them into your ears. If he can’t do his part, ask him to go in with you on hiring somebody to fish the words out of him. It’s your best shot at turning the clock back to “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love” from “can’t figure out how to get you deported.” Then again, why stop the clock three years ago? There’s much to be said for going back to a little seventh-grade fun -- Spin The Bottle, Truth Or Dare, and Strip Twister -- much more than can be said for boring grownup games like “Seven Million Minutes In The Closet” and “With This Ring I Thee Weld.”
