LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR A TATT MOOT? I have lived on Maui for six years now and can remember when Maui Time started. Back in those days your magazine had such a grass-roots approach, it was always interesting. I have not read Maui Time much in more recent years, though I was happy to see on the last cover a feature on Tattooing. The title drew me in - “The Titillating Art of Tattoo.” I was disappointed once I actually read the content hoping for some interesting facts regarding tattoo as an art form. Instead, what I read was more of a biased endorsement/advertisement for the shop named in the article. David, hurray for your first tattoo. Too bad you didn’t use this forum to describe something more interesting like, what should a first timer look for in a tattoo artist or shop? How do you know the price value for the piece you might be interested in? How do you know if the shop or tattoo artist re-uses needles? You might well have described the licensing procedures each tattoo artist must endure in order to tattoo in Hawaii. What commitment, if any, is required by each person getting tattooed? Is it better to be drunk, sunburned, on drugs, is numbing required? Can I get a tattoo, then go catch a wave? Why you chose the shop you chose is a mystery when there are several to choose from, many with artists who have been tattooing multiple decades. I personally have been into every shop on Maui and the one you endorse is the last one I would ever choose because of the lack of “aloha”. My friends and I were treated with a total lack of respect by the very same people you describe in your endorsement, when we were scouting our next tattoo artist. Some chick who works there was making fun of my buddy behind his back to another tattoo artist, while he was asking questions - very unprofessional. I have collected many tattoos on this island, none on the west side because of the experiences I have had in the very shop you describe. Tatt-Teased TT, Thank you so much for reading Maui Time again after so many years. I'm glad that it was our article that drew you back in as a reader (we heard that they just couldn't keep 'um in the stands that week!). We have written several stories for Maui Time and have always wanted some critical response from the readers, you are the first. To address some of your points: As writers for this piece we did, in fact, visit other shops. Our original idea was to give a broader representation of tattoo on Maui by highlighting the most popular and busiest shops on the island. Out of the shops that we approached, Skin Deep was the only one that agreed to the article. They treated us with the "aloha" that you mentioned you also find important when shopping for a tattooist. Each of us, as potential tattoo clients, can only speak from our actual experience, ours was positive.

For this piece, we did choose to speak on the philosophical, historical, and artistic aspects of tattoo, rather than cover the technical things, "facts" that you mentioned, since these technical aspects are, by law, distributed to the client directly by each shop. We decided to not use our limited word count to write about them. Thanks for the feedback, keep reading and keep writing in. Adrianne Martinez and David Whitney
COUNTY OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE In response to Sally Raisbeck’s support of Mike Foley’s recent reversal of two building permits in the Palauea Bay area because of Foley's opinion that the building permit issuance was granted in haste and obviously rushed: This is a joke and couldn't haven been further from the truth and I would like to see appointed officials being held accountable for their statements made to the public. Both applicants have been under review for almost two years and did everything asked of them from the planning and building department. The permits were issued under strict guidelines for building and keeping up with the community plan. Is this still another way for the planning department to take away tax payers constitutional land rights? If these permits were issued by Foley’s definition of haste, how long is a reasonable amount of time for the land owners to wait for a permit? Is this just another of Foley’s "planners burn-out" remarks to the general public? This is an example of mis-informed information supplied by Government officials and newspapers. Get the real story before you jump to conclusions, people! Steve W. Kear, Kihei
KEEPING THE WORD LIVE I just wanted to say thanks for printing the article on Torey. We have had a few calls come in since the article ran. They were the first in many months, so the article definitely assisted in keeping the word live. Todd Newlin, Colorado

FORCEFED TALK ABOUT UNGRATEFUL It sure is tough to advocate a war in Iraq when the very people you are supposed to be liberating are killing their liberators. Two American businessmen were wounded, one critically, in Kuwait recently by anti-U.S. sympathizers intent on disrupting American war plans. And this wasn't the first time. In October, two Kuwaitis attacked a group of Marines conducting a training exercise. One Marine was killed. The next month, a Kuwaiti policeman opened fire on two American soldiers; one was wounded in the face the other was shot in the shoulder. And that's not all. Just this month, a Kuwaiti soldier was arrested for selling information to the Iraqi's about U.S. military operations in Kuwait. This all leads to one question. Don't you ungrateful inbreds realize that the U.S. is the reason you aren't being starved or, better yet, being used as human test subjects for chemical weapons by Saddam Hussein?! It's a tough time to be an American soldier. U.S. forces continue to come under surprise attack from shadow groups in Afghanistan and they will surely suffer the same fate if the proposed buildup of American forces in the Gulf bears fruition. It's going to be hard to fight a war when you are in a combat zone even inside of "friendly" country.
THIS IS GETTING CONFUSING With the exception of that one Russian girl and those two sisters, I think it would be a safe bet to say there aren't too many female tennis pros with captivating physical attributes. Which makes it all the more peculiar to tune in to the Aussie open and see Kim Clijsters cavorting in front of the cameras in party dress and professional make-up. Is this an obvious attempt to increase the sex appeal of women's tennis? I'd have to
say it's about as obvious as when the commissioner of women's professional golf told a mandatory meeting among LPGA members that their images and appearances were going to be an integral part of the tour's future. In the wake of his tour already losing one of its few marketable events in the Safeway Classic, Votaw was basically telling his charges, “If you want to play golf for a living, get in shape, look better, and smile more often." If you are in charge of marketing a women's group, sex appeal is impossible to ignore. Look everywhere - sex sells. But that's because men are like dogs. But creating pseudo sex symbols out of tennis and golf pros is like dangling a shelter kitty in front of that dog. Sure, we'll go after the cat - we're dogs, for cryin' out loud. But damn, you don't have to insult us like that. And lastly, at the same time Ty and his counterpart in the WUSTA are trying to spice up their respective organizations, Martha Burke is threatening to disrupt the Masters golf tournament unless a female is granted membership. And if that isn't like throwing salt on the old wounds, first we're made to chase the kitty and then we have to give them access to our clubs so they can have a seat and a cocktail when they want a breather.

I don't know how many times I've heard the U.S. referred to as the world's leading superpower, but it's been a lot. My question is: if we are indeed the leading power in the world, how come we depend on other nations' approval to do what we think is necessary? Time and time again we hear President Bush say that he "is now certain that Iraq is not disarming.” Then he says that "if the U.S. needs to act on its own, it will not hesitate to do so.” So, if he's certain that Iraq is not disarming and we'll attack on our own if necessary, shouldn't world opinion and UN votes be irrelevant? I think we need to figure out whether we want to lead or have everybody agree with us, because it's pretty tough to get both at the same time.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life for Maui County Youth invites all cancer survivors to attend a complimentary Survivors Dinner and to start off the fundraising event with the traditional Survivors Victory Lap. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, at the War Memorial Outflow Field in Wailuku. The Survivors Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m.; the Survivors Lap follows at 7 p.m. At 10 p.m. visitors will be asked to leave the field for students who raised money and signed up to walk laps throughout the night and following morning. Participating students in intermediate through high school are presently forming teams of eight to 15 members, all with a common goal to raise a minimum of $1000 per team. Adult supervisors and security guards will remain at the site all night. “The purpose of beginning the event with the Survivors Dinner is to first and foremost honor those who are survivors of cancer, as well as their caregivers. If you've had cancer one day, you are considered a survivor and are invited to the dinner,” says Teresa Hoon, Maui County’s Executive Director of American Cancer Society (ACS). “Different relay committees throughout

the nation handle this in various ways. Dinner may be pupus, or a sit-down, white tablecloth sort of affair, and usually survivors are given a ribbon, or medal, or sash, something that identifies them as survivors. I'm not sure yet what our youth coordinators’ format will be, but I assure you that at every Relay event, it is always a memorable highlight for all involved,” says Hoon. Hoon recalls that last year at all Maui County Relays, several volunteers took Polaroid photographs of survivors, then asked written statements from them. Statements requested stronger support in cancer research, as well as in health insurance and other methods of access to treatment. The photos and statements were sent on September 19th to “Celebration On The Hill,” a national Relay For Life in Washington D.C. “Another reason why we sponsor the survivors recognition is to help the community understand why ACS raises money. Donations support patient services, research, education, and early detection efforts. Almost everyone can relate how cancer has touched their life,” says Hoon. One of the goals in this inaugural youth-driven project is to collect monetary contributions before the event. Youth teams are discussing ways to raise funds such as soliciting donations directly, having garage sales, holding car washes, selling cookies and huli huli chicken. A special contributor who recently donated $5000 to the youth campaign is Kihei resident Betty Leis. Maui’s Youth Relay Steering Committee appointed her as the first “Honorary Chair & Survivor” for the event. “Betty Leis is a survivor who epitomizes the

Her son, however, was not as fortunate. He was 48-years-old when he passed away several years ago from throat cancer caused by cigarette smoking. “My donation of time and money cannot bring back my son or friends who have died from cancer,” says Leis. “But it can help the children to learn about it now, so that they can avoid suffering in the future from this disease that kills. The steering committee members, recruitment chairpersons, and team captains from eight high schools throughout the County attended the kick-off. “We had 29 team captain packets available yesterday and all were picked up,” says Vince Heyd, who co-chairs the youth relay. “If all of those translate to teams, we will have a very

One of the highlights at the kick-off included ice breakers that relieved some of the anxiety felt in a room full of students from different high schools. Mikaella McGuiness of Kalama Intermediate was in charge of introducing the icebreakers, one of which included singing songs and imitating each other’s moves. It was a fun way to bond, as names to faces became easier for the youth to remember. With everyone, including the adult advisors, all charged up, the atmosphere in the room changed. Get on the Bus! Amy Huyett gets the scoop on Maui’s new transportation system Why is it so hard to find the schedule? Finding out the bus system even exists is hard, but getting an actual schedule can be even harder. Dennis Levine, operations manager for Akina Aloha Tours, said that they are doing their best to get the schedule out to people. Currently, the schedule is published in the Maui Phone Directory, which goes out to all homes in Maui. It is also in the Maui Visitor Magazine, which has a distribution of 35,000 copies per month. “So there are ways for people to find it,” Levine said. “We also advertise occasionally in the newspapers and there is always our Website along with the county’s Website. The county has been very helpful in getting schedules printed.” But the schedule changes so much that the copies currently in the mentioned publications are outdated. And the Internet is a wonderful resource, but only for those fortunate enough to have access to it. Calling Akina Aloha Tours at 879-2828, is another option, but then you might run into busy signals, making it frustrating and time consuming. If a correct schedule was readily available for both locals and tourists, business would surely increase. So maybe Akina Aloha Tours, along with the County, should put a little more time and money into schedule distribution.
How much is it? Prices are very reasonable. Riding from point to point costs $1, while in some areas it can be $2. Some connecting prices run $5, but it makes more sense to just pay the systemwide, all routes fee of $10, and then you are good for the day. If you are going to be using it on a regular basis, like for work, then it is worth purchasing a monthly pass, which is $25 Kama’aina and $20 for seniors and students within the individual routes. System-wide, all routes monthly passes are $65 Kama’aina and $55 for seniors and students.

COVER STORY
Yes, I know it might be news to some of you, but Maui does have a public transportation system. Akina Aloha Tours, along with the County of Maui and Maui Economical Opportunity, created Holo Ka’a Public Transit back in July, which offers bus service within South, Central, and West Maui, as well as connecting service between the areas for residents and tourists. I had heard rumors here and there that a bus system existed, and I think I remember seeing something that could resemble a bus driving on the streets, but like most people here, I have never used it. So I decided to leave the car keys at home for a day and cruise Maui city-style, by taking the bus. But before I could start on my bus adventure, I had some research to do. I had no idea where the bus stops were, times or frequency, how much it costs, and where exactly it would take me to. Because I am fortunate enough to have Internet access, I did what I always do when I need information about something, and I went online. At this point, I didn’t even know the name but a simple search using “Maui Bus System” brought up Akina Aloha Tour’s Website, which is www.akinatours.com, and once there I was easily able to download a copy of the schedule. Now without the convenience of the Internet, I would have had a much tougher time locating a copy, but it can be done. (SEE SCHEDULE) With the schedule in hand, and after studying it for almost an hour, it started to make enough sense that I could see there are roughly five main routes. I live in Kihei, so I thought I would ride Route 4B, which goes from Uwapo and South Kihei Road to the Shops at Wailea, with frequent stops along the way. Then from the Shops at Wailea, I could take the Route 3 Express from Wailea to Kaanapali and spend the day in Lahaina. The prices vary depending on where you are going, but it all seemed to be very affordable. (SEE PRICING) I now had a plan, but I wasn’t all that confident things would go smooth because although the schedule states the pick up and drop off
points, the bus stops aren’t marked with signs. How would I know where to stand and would the bus driver see me? (SEE BUS STOP SIGNS) So feeling a little apprehensive about this whole bus thing, I left my house on foot to walk to the nearest bus stop. Luckily for me, the bus stop was only about a five minute walk, but I was so nervous about missing it that I left way too early and was stuck standing on the side of the road for about 20 minutes hoping I was in the right place. I did get some strange looks from people driving by who were probably thinking, “Why is that girl just standing on the side of road?” But finally I saw the bus making its way toward me, right on time. Now from the outside, the buses do not look like the typical city bus with advertisements on the side. They are a little smaller and white with the company name and logo written in pink along the side. Thankfully the driver spotted me right away, and I climbed on board. The inside resembles your typical bus, but nicer. It was very clean and the seats have a thin, but nice, blue cushioning which makes for a slightly softer ride. It was also air conditioned, and that can be a major selling point during the unbearably hot, humid months of

What about bus stop signs? Currently there are only actual bus stops identified by signs on the Central Routes in Kahului, and at the Lahaina Cannery Mall and Lahaina Harbor stops. Levine said that lack of signs is the number one complaint, but he has been working with the County and said the signs are coming soon. “The signs have been ordered, but installation is another story,” he said. “Right now they are only going to be added for the South route (Kihei), but eventually we want to put them all over. They will help increase public awareness and also eliminate confusion.”
Who is riding the Bus? Cookie Ellis said she sees tourists, students, seniors, and locals riding her bus. The number of people using it to go to work is increasing almost daily, and some people actually have come to depend on the bus for their main source of transportation. Levine said after a very slow start, he is pleased with the recent increase in users. The goal is to make it convenient and accessible to everyone on Maui. “We send out survey cards to passengers and from the feedback, we are finding out what we can do to accommodate the needs of all different riders,” he said.
summer. My bus driver, Cookie Ellis, greeted me with a smile and asked me where I was going. I took a seat at the front of the bus and checked out the other passengers. It was mid-morning and pretty quiet, but there were six other people; five were tourists and one, a local resident. There was a mom and her two little girls, who were out to do some shopping at Kihei Kalama Village, and the other three passengers got off at the Pi’ilani Shopping Center. Ellis said that during the day it tends to be a little slower, but the mornings and afternoons are getting busier and she has a lot of regular riders. (SEE WHO IS RIDING THE BUS?) “We are starting to get plenty of locals who use the bus to go to work every day,” she said. “It gets to a point that I am so used to seeing them, that when they are not on the bus one day, I actually start to worry.” Ellis was very resourceful and helped to explain the schedule to me. She said she always finds out where her passengers are headed and what time they are planning on being picked up so she can look out for them. “I try to let them know the times
and exactly where to stand when they need to be picked up so it is easy for them to use the system,” she said. “We know it can be a little intimidating for first-time users.” Ellis took me along the entire route, pulling over at every stop and pointing out the designated areas for the stops on the way back. Traffic was minimal and the bus moved right along. I was surprised at the quickness and efficiency. Ellis said it usually stays on schedule, but in the afternoons the bus gets stuck in traffic like the rest of us. “The traffic definitely causes us some problems because we can get up to 20 minutes behind schedule,” she said. “It’s only getting worse as Kihei is growing, so people need to keep that in mind when using it in the afternoons.” (SEE TRAFFIC) The bus remained empty for the rest of the trip, except for a local resident, Jessica Chatelain, who got on at the Foodland stop on South Kihei Road and was headed to the Shops at Wailea. She said she has been waiting for a bus system like this for about 10 years. “We needed this so badly. When I heard it was finally happening I was very excited, but it took me a while to
Traffic Traffic causes the majority of delays and it is also a main reason the bus system was created in the first place, and why the County was willing to step in and help. Levine said ideally more people will start taking the bus, which will get more cars off the road, helping the traffic situation and increasing the efficiency of the system. Waiting for a late bus is irritating, to say the least, but this is one thing that is really out of the drivers’ control.

Why is it being changed and how will I keep updated? The bus schedule is constantly being changed and this is a huge problem for users. It’s frustrating for the regulars and discourages newcomers. You never know when or if the bus is actually coming. But Levine said because the system is still new, it is taking a while to find out what works best, and that the changes are simply geared to make the system more effective for users. “It was necessary to make some revisions as of January 1, and there will be even more taking effect on February 1,” he said. “But hopefully that will be it.” Hopefully, but until a permanent schedule is put out to the public, people just won’t be able to see this as a reliable form of transportation. Even if you think you have the times right, to avoid any mix ups, I would advise calling and double checking. Maybe adding some other options, such as an automated voicemail system that would provide callers with a reliable way of finding out the updated locations and times they need, would help to minimize the confusion. Also the schedules on the Website are currently updated and should be accurate. Hours of operation vary, depending on the route, so be sure to check your area.

figure out how it works,” Chatelain said. “It took almost a full six months to get my hands on a schedule.” She said because she works at the Outrigger Wailea Resort, she was able to ask around there and finally got a schedule from the bell desk. This was only her third time using the bus, but she eventually plans to take it to and from work. “It’s very convenient and I think it will start to catch on the more the word gets out there,” she said. “It might take a little extra time and planning, but with all this traffic and congestion, I’m all for keeping even one car off the road. I definitely support the cause.” Chatelain said it is kind of hard to keep up with the schedule because it is constantly being changed, so she keeps the number on her cell phone and just calls whenever she needs to know a time. (SEE SCHEDULE CHANGES) “The bottom line is that $1 for the bus sure beats paying a friend $4 for gas money,” she said. “I also plan on taking it to Lahaina someday in the future because without a car I have been stuck, Kihei bound.” She got off at her scheduled stop and my Kihei bus experience was just about over too. I thanked Ellis for her helpful insights and stepped off feeling like I had just discovered a great secret about my neighborhood. But I wanted to see if it worked this well everywhere, so for my next adventure I got on the Route 3 Express, which would take me to my destination of Lahaina, before it continued on to Kaanapali. For this trip, I decided to leave my bus driver alone and just relax and enjoy the view. I paid my $10 all-day pass fee and took a window seat toward the back. This bus was also clean and cool. I got comfortable and could have even fallen asleep. There were few passengers, but a nice married couple, Diane and Scott Mitchell, were sitting across the way. They were first-time Maui vacationers here for two weeks from Boston and staying in Wailea, but wanted to take a day trip to Lahaina. They said they found out about the bus from their hotel Concierge, and it sounded appealing because they didn’t have to worry about directions or parking. “We are on vacation and sometimes it gets so frustrating spending the entire time driving around in a rental car looking at a map and not knowing where to go.” Scott said. “This way we just let someone else do the work and we can spend a nice day out shopping and seeing the sights.” And although at first they were surprised to hear that Maui even had a bus system, their experience had been very good so far.
“Coming from a city, it’s nice to be the only ones on the bus and to have the drivers be so helpful and friendly,” Diane said. Our conversation was interrupted about five miles past Ma’alaea when a humpback whale breaching off the coast in the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean caught our attention. “You certainly won’t see that riding the bus in Boston,” she said laughing. I sat back for the rest of the ride looking for more whales, but unfortunately that was the only sighting. It was nice, though, to just be a passenger staring out of the window, instead of concentrating on the road. We arrived at my stop, the Lahaina Harbor, right on time. It took about one hour, a little more then if I had driven myself, but if you are not in a hurry, it was a huge bonus to avoid the parking hassle. When I was ready to go back home, I came back to the same stop and the bus arrived about 10 minutes late. There were only a handful of passengers, all tourists returning from shopping excursions. The ride took a little bit longer on the way back, because of the heavier traffic flow. I was dropped off at the Shops at Wailea, which is about four miles from my house. It was still early enough for me to catch the Route 4B bus back home, but I was tired, so I cheated and had a friend waiting to pick me up. No matter how great the bus might be, sometimes you just don’t want to wait. I arrived home feeling quite excited about my day. I didn’t have that dirty, grimy feeling like I do after riding the bus in a city, like San Francisco. I didn’t meet any “crazy” people or have any wild stories to tell. Instead, my bus experience was comfortable, relaxing, clean and friendly. The Holo Ka’a Public Transit reflects Maui’s laidback style and welcoming atmosphere, and it can be a great resource. You just have to get out there and use it. (SEE “DOES IT GO ANYWHERE ELSE?”)
Ride on, Mr. Bus Driver...Ride on
Does it go Upcountry or to the airport? For now, the bus only operates South, Central and West Maui. Levine said there are future plans to expand the bus system to Upcountry, but areas such as the North Shore have not yet been discussed. “We have been talking about expanding service with the County and it definitely seems to be a possibility for the future,” he said. Unfortunately, the bus does not go to the airport. Bus driver and dispatcher for Akina, Francis Borden, said there are just too many politics involved with providing airport service right now. Being able to ride the bus to the airport for a $5 fee, instead of a cab or shuttle fare of $25, would likely cause major problems for the transportation industry on Maui. “We get a lot of calls about that,” Borden said. “And it’s just something we can’t get into at this point. It is not totally out of the question for the future, but for now we just don’t.”
READERS' CHOICE OR DUM-DUM AND DUMBER Michael Brown, 33, was arrested in Marked Tree, Ark., in January and charged with burglarizing the lobby of the Marked Tree Bank after security cameras caught him hauling away a clock radio, a CD player and a handful of Dum-Dum suckers, which the bank has on hand for customers' children. The next morning, according to the Arkansas DemocratGazette, police followed a trail of DumDum wrappers down Frisco Street, across the railroad tracks, and into the mobile home park where Brown lives.
LATEST RIGHTS Australian Supreme Court Justice Barry O'Keefe rejected the challenge of a drug-possession suspect in November that his rights had been violated during his arrest. Contrary to the suspect's contention, O'Keefe said that when Rocky the police dog nuzzled the suspect's crotch, it was merely a "social gesture" that dogs habitually do, rather than an indecent assault.
A study by psychology professor Barry Jones (Glasgow University) found that men and women who have had three beers perceive people of the opposite sex as 25 percent more attractive than they did before they started drinking (August). And, writing in the Journal of Clothing, Science and Technology, a Southampton University (England) physicist found that many women wear the wrong-size bra because retailers commit a math error known as "spurious rounding" when converting bust and rib-cage size to bra size (December). And studies at Jikei University (Tokyo) found that people who employed seven rules for good health (e.g., adequate sleep, no smoking) had about 6 percent higher blood pressure than people who were not so concerned about their health (October).

The Boston Globe profiled homeless philosopher Donald Keaney, 61, in December, describing his Walden-like existence in the woods near Brookline, Mass. Keaney lives under a plastic tarp, warmed by several heavy blankets, but the rest of his possessions consist of about 10 years' worth of newspapers (New York Times, New York Daily News, New York Post, Wall Street Journal, Investors Business Daily, Boston Globe and Boston Herald) that are methodically filed and sealed in plastic bags and strewn around the ground as if they were chairs and tables. Keaney, a political conservative, also attends protests, lectures and concerts, and, by the way, has long been the beneficiary of a trust fund which he has chosen so far to ignore. "Living in the woods, you can see life is very tragic," he told the Globe. "I don't know if I'm a misanthrope, but (people) have a lot of limitations."
Officials in Rankin Inlet, on the north shore of Hudson Bay in Canada's Northwest Territories, began installation of an artificial ice rink because rising temperatures in the last three decades have reduced hockey season from nine months to five. And a female murder victim was identified (even though her body had been dismembered) when the coroner checked the serial numbers on her breast implants (Nottinghamshire, England). And the town council of Bend, Ore., formally prohibited spitting and defecating on its transit buses, as well as riders who emanate "a grossly repulsive odor."
RECENT RAGES Humming Rage: Sheila Raven Lord, 49, stabbed a companion with a steak knife because he was humming a Megadeth song louder than the Celine Dion song she was listening to (Glenview, Ill., November). Mailbox Door Rage: George Krushinski was charged with planting small bombs in a mailbox and a letter carrier's vehicle because a weekend carrier had been leaving Krushinski's mailbox door down (Lexington, Ky., November) ("I've warned you bastards many times about leaving my mailbox open," Krushinski wrote, "(and) now you will pay.") Wrong Socks Rage: High school student-musician Trevor LeBlanc won $25,000 in a lawsuit against his band director, Tom Cole, who, at the 2001 Tournament of Roses Parade chewed out LeBlanc for wearing the wrong-color socks (San Diego, November) ("I ought to wring your (expletive deleted in original story) neck," Cole reportedly said as he grabbed LeBlanc by the throat.)

LEAD STORIES A Montana district judge ruled in January that for a homicide suspect with apparent multiple personalities, exercise of a Miranda right by one of them carries over to all the others. Tessa Haley lawyered up when police sought to question her about the stabbing death of her roommate, and though police questioning ceased, Haley transformed into "Martha" and spontaneously confessed to the crime, according to officers. Judge Thomas Honzel ruled that Martha's statements could not be used against Haley (although Haley is still free under existing law to argue that she is not responsible for Martha's crime).

An Interview with Natalie Coughlin
NCAA Swimmer of the Year, World & American Records Holder, Natalie Coughlin Every year during the holiday break, a handful of collegiate swimming programs migrate to the Valley Isle, not only to escape unfavorable mainland weather, but to put in a week or so of intense training. Far removed from the stresses of academic life, these athletes spend over 4 hours a day in the pool, enduring the heaviest training load of the year. Take the tropical island setting and blend it with the world class pools available here on Maui and you have an elixir for the sting of swimming 8 to 10 miles a day. This week, the #9 ranked team in the country, the University of California Women’s team took up residence at the Lahaina Aquatic Center. This dazzling, energetic squad is guided by head coach, Teri McKeever, who was recently named a U.S. National Team women’s assistant coach for the 2003 World Championships. One exposure to her charismatic approach to coaching leaves no wonder why she was named the 2002 American Swimming Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year. Among the many stars on the roster are Senior, Staciana Stitts, who won Olympic Gold in Sydney, All-Americans Micha Burden, Michelle Harper, Danielle Becks and Lauren Medina. But it’s Junior, Natalie Coughlin, that everyone is buzzing about. Why? Well, due largely in part to owning 3 world records and 33 American records, Coughlin was named the 2002 Female World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World magazine. As recently as last week, she was named for the second year in a row, one of 11 first-round finalists for the 73rd Annual AAU James E. Sullivan

Memorial Award which recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation. Last year she was one of five finalists for the award, but the honor went to figure skater Michelle Kwan. Past winners include such household names as Peyton Manning (1997), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1986), Greg Louganis (1984) and the late Florence Griffith-Joyner (1988). Catching up with Natalie, NCAA Swimmer of the Year in her freshman and sophmore seasons, was not easy, so we fished her out of the Lahaina pool following the team’s a.m. workout, promising to quickly return her to the “dryland” breathing exercise already in progress. Here is what the remarkably humble and down-to-earth waterwoman had to say. RA: Welcome to Maui, Natalie. How are you enjoying training here? Natalie Coughlin: In the middle of January, Berkley is usually a miserable place. It’s great to get out of the daily grind and get some sun, the atmosphere is motivating…Maui is the perfect place. We got surf a little yesterday…and I do mean “little”. RA: Your accomplishments are rather staggering. Surely you and the team cross-train. NC: We do yoga on the team…we do spinning…they are doing breathing drills over there (pointing) right now…last year we got to do kick boxing that was really fun. Running, all sorts of cross training, it’s ridiculous. RA: How much you benching? NC: Oh, nothing. I injured my shoulder when I was sixteen and benching affects that area. So, a whopping 45 pounds! But I can do lots of pull ups! (cheerily) RA: How about diet? Do you subscribe to any of the plans out there today? NC: No, I think my diet is a lot different than most people’s. Most seem to be too
caught up in calorie counting...I like rich foods, good portions…definitely not starving yourself. I am really into food and I love cooking. I recently went on the Today Show and did the cooking segment. That was one of the most exciting things I have done. RA: What are your musical tastes? Do you use music as a motivational tool? NC: I like pretty much anything except I really, really hate trance. My freshman year roommate loved rave music and trance and played it way too much so…but anything else I like. I just got these really cool sound canceling Bose headphones and I have been having a lot of fun making mixes…and it’s relaxing on the plane or behind the starting blocks. RA: Do you have a favorite movie or TV right now? NC: Umm…(laughing)…I don’t want …Ok, my favorite movie is probably Dogma, I really like Kevin Smith A LOT. Oh you do too? I love Kevin Smith. My favorite TV show, I’m embarrassed to say is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (blushing) RA: I’m down with the Silent Bob but I gotta leave ya hangin’ on Buffy. If you were to say you had any vices what would they be? NC: Coffee! Definitely. I think it’s good to have a vice…If I don’t feel good, I go get some coffee and it makes me happy. RA: Finish this sentence: I hate it when my roommate… NC: Plays her trance music! RA: Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got... NC: (laughing) I’m still Jenny from the block.! RA: Alright, Morning person or Night Owl? NC: Morning person, definitely. From years of being up early..definitely morning person. RA: Do you like to gawk at celebrities? NC: Well, no. Recently I went to the ESPY awards…which is a mix of movie stars and ath-

letes and it was the athletes that amazed me the most. The day before that, though, we went to the Playboy mansion to watch a boxing match. They sent us up there in a bunch of luxury busses. I wasn’t feeling well that day so I got on the last bus which turned out to be the all-star bus. I ended up sitting next to Evander Holyfield, he was like, right where you are. The whole time I wanted to talk to him because I love boxing but I was terrified of him, honestly terrified. Marshall Faulk was in the seat in front of me and I would have loved to talk to him to but I just can’t! RA: Do you think the supermarkets here are too cold? NC: (Quizzically) Yeah, the air conditioning is on too high. RA: Where do you see yourself after swimming and school? NC: I really don’t know. I would love to stay in sports somehow. I would love to do TV announcing, maybe sidelines, not necessarily in swimming. But I can’t see my life away from sports. RA: What’s your sign? NC: My sign? Virgo. Virgo-Leo actually, August 23rd, right on the border. I think I have a lot more Virgo characteristics…the perfectionist. RA: Having watched you swim I will agree with that…Perfection. So do you think you can take me in arm wrestling? NC: Definitely not. I suck at it because it’s all technique and I don’t have it. RA: Thank You, Natalie, and best of luck. NC: Thank You. The opportunity of having this talented group of ladies visiting their westside pool was not overlooked by the Lahaina Swim Club. Head coach Tom Popdan and lifeguard Jack Spottswood coordinated a mini stroke clinic with Cal coach McKeever. The local club got to work one on one with the Olympian, world record holder and the All-Americans. The experience is invaluable, comparable to a surf lesson from Kelly Slater and Andy Irons.

It turns sideways on me, trying anything to escape. I know I’ve got it on the run and I bite mightily in towards its center. It’s mortally wounded now and knows the end is near, but this ain’t no girly taco. It twists, it slips, it lets loose a lethal drip, hot sauce and sour cream snaking mercilessly past my wrist toward the pristine, virginal white of my sleeve. Then, with a muttered curse and a flick of my wrist, the dastardly remnant is gulped in one bite, its venomous flow tidied up with a napkin. Whew! That was close. I scan the table for my next opponent. The enchiladas are good and tasty, but can’t put up much of a fight, confined to the plate as they PHOTO: KIRSTEN GUENTHER
Mexican food is fun, especially when enjoyed with friends. It’s hard to feel stuffy and uptight while struggling to preserve the structural integrity of your taco, salsa dripping through your fingers and sour cream on your chin. Horhitos Mexican Cantina next to Hapa’s in the Lipoa Center is all about fun, and you know it as soon as you walk through the door. Horhitos takes a standard, boring unit in a strip mall and transforms it into a lively, festive Mexican cantina. The walls are awash in color and feeling. One entire wall is painted with Spanish arches and rolling country views that provide an illusion of depth. A long bar bends around to the rear toward the restrooms where a painted portrait proclaims a reward for “Zipper Pete”. I nearly apologize for bumping into a stuffed bandito who slouches on a bench just inside the entrance, head tilted forward onto his chest. Jose Cuervo himself, perhaps? The décor definitely puts me and my friends in the mood for some tall, frosty margaritas, and the bartender doesn’t let us down. They arrive big, beautiful and frosted with salt with a deliciously satisfying punch. A few more of these and I’ll be joining my friend by the door. The complimentary tortilla chips are light and crisp and the salsa is fresh and perfectly spiced, though heavy-handed on the salt. There are six of us tonight and we order large from the moderately priced, classic Mexican menu. We start with the Ono Ceviche which is attractively presented in a martini glass with lime, red onion, avocado, cilantro, and tomato. The Baked Artichoke Hearts are served in a spicy jalapeno cream sauce that works wonders on the normally uneventful product. Our round of appetizers is completed by an outstanding Chicken Avocado Soup. Large strands of shredded chicken are immersed in a bright, clear broth accented by a touch of spice. Slivered Scallions and smooth, creamy slices of avocado set off this superbly balanced show of simple pleasures. I’ll be back many times for this one. The margaritas are beginning to take effect and our conversation grows spirited. The advantage of dining in larger groups is being able to sample more things, and our table is soon full of many different dishes. I don’t know quite where to start so I grab a beef taco that’s within easy reach. The soft corn tortillas mold instantly to my hand and the sauce starts to drip already. I know I’ve made a commitment now and I can’t put it down until it’s done. So be it, then; it’s a true Mexican standoff. It’s you or me, taco, and I’m not giving in without a fight. I take a quick bite, then another, looking for the early advantage.

The pick of the week is McDowell Syrah, a winery that is located in Mendocino County in the McDowell Valley. McDowell is one of the wineries that pioneered the Rhone varietials in California, not knowing if the varietals such as Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Mouverdre would grow as well as they do in their native Rhone Valley. These varietals have done well and are grown in northern and central California. There is a lot of blending that is done in the Rhone Valley of France. In northern Rhone, one traditional blend is made up mainly of Syrah, the only red grape permitted in northern Rhone. Viognier is one of three white varietals from the northern Rhone, the other two being Marsanne and Rousanne. This particular blend consists of mostly the Syrah grape with a touch of Viognier. The Viognier cuts through the harsh edge of the Syrah and gives it a creamy texture and aromatic quality. This McDowell Syrah is made by one of the original Rhone rangers, Bill Crawford, the western leader in Rhone varietals. This wine has a big syrupy texture that leads to nice fruit character, then finishes with that famous white pepper spice.

The Schaefer Portrait Challenge “Redefining the Nature of Portraiture”
PICKS DJ DRINKS BASSNECTAR
As human beings we all have our outer face, our mask, the skin that we want the world to see. We also all have our inner world, our deepest feelings and private thoughts; these are the things that we usually keep to ourselves. The art of portraiture explores the nether regions between our soul’s deepest expressions and our ego’s idealized façades. Is a stick figure of Mommy a portrait? Is it possible for a painting of a person to not be a portrait? Just as every human subject is unique, so too, every artist has his/her own perspective on what is important in a portrait. Some see technical mastery, photo-realism or exact likeness as the main objective. Others believe that it is more a matter of tradition, harking back to the days when royalty and the Rich paid handsome sums to painters who could create their idealized likeness. According to photographer Louis Fabian Bachrach, “I do not believe that the average person wants a 'map' of his face - I believe he wants to be idealized.” These types of portraits are intended to decorate the walls of institutions and inspire awe in the viewer with their dignity and greatness. A portrait of infamous Vlad the Impaler does not necessarily reveal the horrific life that this man lived, a life so bloodied that the myth of Dracula is attributed to him. Yet, looking at his portrait, one only sees a typical nobleman with an exaggerated underbite. Today this portrait seems eerie and ironic in its superficial representation. And still other artists have entirely different concerns. Reaching deeper, beyond the surface, they find and reflect aspects of their own inner worlds. As Oscar Wilde put it, “Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist and not the sitter.” It is the deeply felt and sincerely expressed works that have stood the test of time and made the history books. In portrait masterworks by artists such as Frida Khalo, Van Gough, Mary Cassat, or Egon Sheile, a “good” likeness is the meas-

ure of “inner” likeness and not mere physical representation. It is this “something extra”, this depth of honesty that makes an image endure over time. In such a portrait, it no longer matters who the sitter is, for the feeling that the artist expresses in the piece touches something much more universal within us. We are captivated by it, no matter who it is a portrait of or when it was painted. When Picasso painted his famous portrait of Gertrude Stein, it was widely disliked by Stein and her circle of friends. Yet this painting was absolutely pivotal for Picasso, it marked the end of his “Blue” period and the transition into his mature work, eventually leading to his breakthrough into deconstruction and Cubism. Picasso refused to idealize Stein, but saw beyond her ego and displayed it like an empty husk ultimately revealing a universal archetype, the stone Goddess inside her. As Mailer put it, “The face is an astounding mask; the eyes are unseeing or, rather, inseeing, and hint at the force buried within her.” Picasso had this to say: “Everybody thinks she is not at all like her portrait, but never mind, in the end, she will manage to look just like it.” – and so she did. As Picasso’s example shows, there are many experimental and unconventional approaches to portraiture. Gertrude Stein, herself, is famous for her portraits in writing. Today, there are a variety of new mediums being used to express portraiture. An excellent example, by local artist Tom Sewell, is his widely admired video project “Forty Years in the Photo Booth” (Art Maui, 2000). It is an honest, revealing and intimate self-portrait that was created with the aid of modern technology. As Sewell’s piece demonstrates, “high tech” can be “high touch”. The opposite is also true; there are artists who take the traditional and earthy medium of oil paint (high touch), and use a photograph (high tech) to replicate it as a portrait. Ultimately, portraiture can embody either end of this broad spectrum, from the expression of our deepest truths, to projecting the façade of our social ideals.

10pm Saturday, at Casanova’s in Makawao. DJ Lorin arrives to the Islands via an enthusiastic following and promotion to get his naughty-but-nice, bass-loving sounds over here. HULA BOWL PARTY Saturday, at the Kahului Ale House. I’m not even a huge sports fan, but this situation is just too perfect! The Ale House is offering free shuttle service from 3-5pm & 8-10pm to the stadium for the Hula Bowl! So you can get yer drink-on, and get riled up for the game, and not have to do any damn drivin’! Then, when the game is over, take the shuttle back to the Ale House, and get yer freak-on with The Afrodisiacs at 9:30pm! It’s a damn good plan and I’m sticking to it! Dammit!

SEX WITH LURCH The Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center is hosting the Schaefer Portrait Challenge: “Challenging Hawai’i artists to create works that celebrate the ordinary heroes among us.” Although The Schaefer Portrait Challenge was limited to only painting and sculpture, this statewide, juried exhibit intends to offer a “portrait” of Hawai’i’s unique multicultural human landscape. Portrait subjects are people who have distinguished themselves in the eyes of the artist, whose challenge is to go beyond “likeness” and capture the essence of that person. The public is invited to vote for their favorite portrait in the exhibit, “The People’s Choice Award”. So check out this show and see if The Schaefer Portrait Challenge met their admirable goal of “Redefining the nature of Portraiture”, January 5 - February 23. Gallery hours are: Tue - Sun, 11 am - 5 pm, & before Castle Theater shows and during intermission. FREE Admission!

Tuesday, at Hapa’s; Wednesday, at Maui Brews. My vote for the most intriguing show this year, past and future, I can safely say. This is a surf-glam-rock band from California that is loved and respected so much in Oahu, that their musical excursions there are becoming more and more frequent, which is good ‘cause apparently the band digs the surf as much as the aloha. How would you describe them, you ask? “When the flamboyant strut of glitter and glam is coated by surfboard wax amidst clouds of incense...” Um, yeah. Or check out this description, “...like something straight out of an Andy Warhol movie - surf guitar, transvestite backup singers, and a 7-foot tall dude dressed like Lurch from the Addams Family.” So there you have it.

Street Hassle Director Dylan Kidd Gives The Lowdown On Roger ) Roger Dodger (
How to lose friends and manipulate women Debut writer/director Dylan Kidd's coming-of-age movie was the hit of this year's Tribeca Film Festival. Its rapid-fire dialogue spins a post-post-modern exploration of battle lines drawn between the sexes in urban cities around America. Campbell Scott gives one of his most inspired performances to date as Roger Swanson, an overeducated, poison tongued New York ad writer with a fiery gift for pronouncing everyone's problems but his own. Roger's moral and sexual failings are thrown into high relief when his 16-year-old geeky nephew Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) shows up unannounced at his office for some impromptu submersion tutoring in the manly art of seduction from Uncle Roger. Roger's self-professed mastery of procuring intimate relations from the opposite sex proves to be problematic at best, especially since his sleeping partner boss Joyce (Isabella Rossellini) has just informed him that she won't be requiring his stud services anymore. Roger and Nick's acrid odyssey takes gut-wrenching twists and turns over the course of a single night as the unlikely duo hit the town in search of sexual conquest. Lust, hypocrisy and self-loathing explode as the unmatched pair makes themselves willing victims to whatever females they can engage in conversation. A high point of the film occurs when Nick gets his first kiss from an opportunity seizing bimbo played exquisitely by Jennifer Beals ("Flashdance"). Picture the scene taking place between a late 30s guy and a 16 year-old girl and you'll immediately get how brilliantly Kidd spars with social constructs in this liberating and caustic little film that's sure to be a cult hit. Dodger?"
Dylan Kidd: Not at all. My father is remarried, so I have a younger brother, who is Nick's age, so I did draw on him very heavily for Nick. Campbell's character is a bit of an amalgam of a lot of people. I had a friend in college, who I still keep in touch with. He's a very nice guy now, but back in college we were both drunken idiots. He would engage in some Roger-like activities. It wasn't so much of a seduction tool, but when he got drunk he would almost become clairvoyant about figuring out what somebody's weakness was and needling them on it. It was like watching a train wreck up close. So that might have been the germ, but mainly it's a certain type of person that you might find in New York or any other urban center, which is over-educated, hyper-verbal and able to sum up other people's universes but have no ability to turn the mirror. CS: It's daring to have a character that's such an anti-hero. The film "Alfie" did it. Did that movie have any influence on you? DK: I love "Alfie." The funny thing is, for independent films, it's almost better to have a character this extreme. I get the question, "were you under any pressure to tone it down?" But the pressure I felt when I was writing it was just to go even further. How else are you gonna get people in the theaters but have somebody who's saying that thing that nobody else would say. I would say a more direct influence is David Thewlis in Mike Leigh's "Naked." What that film taught me is that you can hold an audience's attention if somebody passionate about what they're saying, even if it's total nonsense. But we knew that we needed a miracle performance, and got a bunch of them. CS: Well, the irony is that the character is going to be loved in yuppie circles. DK: It's funny, we took the film to the
Venice Film Festival and the Italians freaked out over the movie. To the Italians, this is not that outrageous a character; it's just a guy out talking to women. But audiences have to believe that a woman would actually give this guy a shot. It's pretty staggering to hear the reaction of women to Campbell in this movie. As much as you want to take a bath after seeing this movie, he's really seductive. CS: Roger comes out with a line that he uses a couple of times in the movie where he calls himself "her boy" in relation to his boss (played by Isabella Rossellini). It's really off-putting and great because it shows what's at the core of the character's self-identity as opposed to this lie that he's projecting the rest of the time. DK: In the movie Roger actually does tell the truth about three times, and that's one of them. CS: How did you arrive at that "boy" identity? DK: I think it's intuitive, but I think - like anybody's who been through way too much therapy - I assume that a lot of people's issues go back to parent/mommy issues. So I think that there's definitely something happening with Isabella's character where a lot of childhood anger is coming out. CS: Were you in therapy before you became a director, or did you think, "I'm like Woody Allen and I have to go to a therapist?" DK: Therapy helped me through some bad times in the '90s when my career was going nowhere and I was miserable. I really believe that therapy allows you to look at people and maybe imagine that you can understand what's driving them even if they don't. I think it's really good for a director or writer - anybody interested in human behavior -- to think about. Let's face it, we are in a city (NYC) of neurotic, career-driven people that all have issues. Usually, people who are very driven career wise are making up for some gap that's in there. I think it's interesting to watch people say one thing and do another. CS: Was the scene at the end, in the high school cafeteria, an attempt to give the movie a happy ending? DK: Even the version that Campbell first read ended with Roger smoking on the couch, because I always had this idea that this is a guy who's literally using words as a smokescreen. So the first image of the film is him in this hale of smoke, and we spend the movie trying to fight through everything to see him, and then the idea was at the end the smoke lifts like a veil, and there he is naked. But I always try to picture the audience in the theater, and once we had Campbell on board and knew that these characters (Roger and Nick) were going to engage people and that they would emotionally invest; I'd be pissed off if I was in that audience with that ending. I mean, I think Neil Labute ("In the Company of Men") is amazing but I like happy endings. If you ask people to invest emotionally for an hour and a half, you can't just then cut the movie off as if nobody's learned anything. This ending allows the audience to come out of the movie gradually and have a laugh, because there hasn't been a lot to laugh about for the last hour and a half. CS: And then you end with an evocative freeze frame.
DK: What I was thinking about with the freeze frame was trying to extend the life of the movie after the lights come up. Hopefully the freeze frame forces people to think back over the movie and make a decision about where they think Nick is going to go from there. You might think it's just going to be a repeating cycle or you might decide that Nick has too much on the ball and that he's going to be o.k. CS: Well, it seems to me that Nick has come a long way after his crash course with Roger from where he was two days before. DK: If Nick gets anything from Roger it's that you've gotta just get in the game - don't just sit there trying to think up the perfect line, you've got to say something. But I think Roger visiting the cafeteria is more a sign of how Campbell's character has got to start over from scratch. CS: What prompted your decision to keep the camera shots so tight and close-up? DK: All of the decisions we made with the camera had to do with keeping people in the movie. We knew that it's a very talky movie and we don't have a lot of the visceral camera techniques that you can do on a big studio film. Also, I'm always distracted in a New York film when I recognize where we are and we turn a corner and suddenly you're in a different neighborhood - we were in the Meatpacking District and now it's the Upper East Side. We're also getting a much wider release than I thought we would, so I thought that 80% of the people who saw this movie would be New Yorkers, so I wanted New York to linger there as a thematic character. So we know we're there but we don't really know where they are in the city. I also don't like master shots - I think they're a waste of time and I feel like they give you an opportunity to breathe. We wanted to keep the pedal to the metal and, specifically Joaquin (Baca-Asay - Director of Photography) and I, can't stand movies that are about the beautiful rectangle. Conrad Hall is great, and "The Road To Perdition" is a beautiful movie, but you're outside of that movie because you're looking at the rectangle. In "Roger Dodger," the first scene teaches your eyes that there's no point in looking at the edges because you have to look in and follow the faces through the movie. CS: In the casting, you have actresses like Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Berkley and Jennifer Beals, none of whose careers is going high, and you get terrific performances, especially from Berkley who is rebuilding her career. DK: Elizabeth Berkley got really hung out to dry on "Showgirls." The important thing to remember about her is that Paul Verhoeven makes movies a certain way. He wants people to go over the top. So "Showgirls" is actually very successful for what it is. It's like when Tim Burton makes a "Mars Attacks," he's trying to make a movie that's campy and kitschy. If Verhoeven had just come out and said that he told her to do that in that movie, then it would be fine. But the implication is that she was just out of control and this is the way she acts. If you want her to do that, she'll do that, but Elizabeth is great and she'll be fine. People who go through the fire early on usually come out stronger.

DIFFICULTLISTENING
BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE
Tang Li Wheebs & The Mole Present: MAUI? We put together a compilation CD in order to showcase Maui-based and Maui-related musicians. We got 1000 copies of it pressed and we've been giving them out for free. Don't feel bad that you haven't been given one now is your chance to get it. All you have to do is send $1 (shipping/handling fee) to us at MAUI? Compilation; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768. Alternatively, you can visit www.motionrecordings.com/MAUI and download or stream the entire album. (There are also links to artists' web pages, ordering, etc.) The following is a song-by-song description of each of the artists on the CD, starting with the first seven songs...
1. JUHA "THIS DREAM IS GONNA BLOW" Based out of Haiku and Makawao, Juha is a unique mixture of hip-hop and just about every other genre of music out there. While Jojoboy handles most of the vocal duties, rapping in a deep, authoritative voice, as well as singing, Ghalib contributes his own brand of rapping and singing, including Arabic singing. Meanwhile, Adam Capriccio, the man behind the scenes, is a key element in the backing music, which is always very creative, catchy, and of high sound quality.
2. PURITAN "THE CHAIR" The man behind the Skinny Chest record label (www.skinnychest.com) lets loose a track from his upcoming full-length album. Puritan is a much-loved Los Angeles transplant who made Maui his home 3 or so years ago and has been blessing us with his unique perspectives ever since. He also moonlights as the lead guitarist for Hinterlander.
3. WILL THE MOORE "ICE CREAM SANDWICH" Also the drummer for Hinterlander and keyboardist for Puritan, Will The Moore is what they call multi-talented, playing a large variety of instruments, as well as being adept at a wide range of vocal styles. There is also a wide range of variety amongst Will's songs, going from quiet and cute to loud and abrasive, to subtle and atmospheric. This "Ice Cream Sandwich" song is an instrumental that sounds kind of like children's music gone wrong.
4. TURBO PUNX "PHOTOGRAPHICAL" One of the Mole's many alter egos, this time straying from hip-hop and serving up a fresh look at the tired genre of punk rock instead. Adding electronic beats and computer editing to the traditional formula of guitar/bass/drums he has create a rather pleasing album. Check out the full-length CD, Ch@os, for more goodness.
5. PROLOGO(PURGATORY) "NAW NAW (HEY HEY)" Not from Maui, but a part of the Motion Recordings record label, which is based in Maui, prologo(purgatory) is a duo from Michigan. (They don't like to capitalize words.) prologo's music is a very experimental take on hip-hop. This song, "naw naw (hey hey)", features sing-songy and poetic rap vocals over a steady beat and lush melodies, while some of the other songs on the album that it comes from, CASCV1, are loud and abrasive with spoken-word vocals.
6. KANEKOA "WAY DOWN" A new track from the much loved Hawaiian roots rock combo. With their blend of local music, reggae and jam band sounds they are a rockin' crowd pleaser. Catch them at one of their frequent gigs around town.
7. CARTOON MONSTER & TANG LI WHEEBS "BAD NEWS" Cartoon Monster, keyboardist for Hinterlander and guitarist for Puritan, is also a vocalist, bassist, percussionist and more. Tang Li Wheebs tries to make music too, but he can't play any instruments or sing in the traditional sense. Together, these two create some weird and wild music. "Bad News" features Cartoon Monster on vocals, accidentally delivering a very catchy chorus that will get stuck in your head. Look out for their upcoming album, Poop Shadow.
...To be continued in next week’s issue...

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON
PUTTING YOUR BEAST FOOT FORWARD I’m a 40-year-old, single, urban, homosexual male. I responded to a personals ad, which was placed by an amazing guy I’ve actually seen in a social setting, but have never approached. Now, he wants to meet. Unfortunately, I have tremendous job stress now, as I inherited an important project -- two months of work, really, that must be completed in 10 days. I’m home, working nonstop, feeling stressed, depressed, and unpresentable. How do I go out with him without coming off that way? Temporarily Underwhelming This is dating, not customer service. Calls needn’t be answered in the order they were received. Even if you crawl out from under the empty pizza boxes, shower, shave, and fumigate, you’ll still come off like something that should be strapped down and written about in case studies. (Not good, since you don’t mention anything about him wanting to hook up with a “Ted Kaczynski type.”) Tell him you’d love to go out with him -- just as soon as you finish playing Hercules for the next 11 days...thus, giving yourself an extra day, post-project, to have a nice, long soak in a vat of Lysol and use chewing gum to fish your self-esteem out of the sewer.
FOE FINISH My best friend likes a new girl every week. It’s quite sad. I discovered that a girl I’m interested in likes my friend, who also likes her. I e-mailed her to tell her how I feel, and why it would be awkward for her to date my friend. (Awkward for me, I mean.) What’s my next move? How do I see that she doesn’t become just another one in a long line of his weekly women? Concerned Friend Strange that you never before flagged down any in that long, long procession of lambs trotting up the ramp into the wolf’s jaws. Still, it is nice to see a man who stands up for what’s right. Eventually. Whenever it coincides with what he’s after. It’s kind of like saying you’re a vegetarian, except on the nights you eat fish, chicken, beef, pork, and any neighborhood pets that strike your fancy. Yo, Iago, you’re some friend. If you were so concerned about what your friend’s doing to women, you would have said something to him. Of course, you could be rushing over this minute to do just that. Probably in a Cadillac Escalade with a “Greenpeace” sticker right over the tailpipe.
HAPPY REFLUX I think I love my girlfriend too much. Fear of causing her pain tears me apart. If our relationship ever stops making me happy, how will I end it, since I just couldn’t do anything that might hurt her? --Bliss-Bombed Instead of acting like an 80-year-old lady, subtract 72 years, and make like an 8-year-old with an ice-cream cone. Trust me, if a kid has ice cream, he’s eating it, not letting it melt while thinking existential thoughts about the meaning of being and freezer burn. In other words, stop creating issues where there are none. Want problems? Next time I’m up late, yanking words out of my pores with a crochet hook...

ARIES: Gong Hey Fat Choi! Get ready for the year of the goat. Be prepared to open your heart more often. By being playful you will become a better team player. Your social obligations come to a head this weekend. You will feel free and detached. TAURUS: The sun will shine upon your abilities. What you do best will be shown to you. Now share your skills with others. Be patient with people you owe money to, as well as people that owe you money. The goat forces you to spend time with sensitive family members. GEMINI: Pretend that all of your free moments were being spent on a vacation. You may not be able to get away, but you do have the opportunity to experience something new. The goat will strengthen your ability to communicate. You'll become more familiar with where you live. CANCER: Personal change and transformation will continue to excite you. Issues involving sexuality, other people’s property, and paranormal occurrences, are more visible. The year of the goat will make your goals clearer and your personal well being stronger. LEO: The season for partnerships and sharing has begun for you. You'll need to be more courageous in relationships. That's the place where you're out of control. The year of the goat will expand your capacity for pleasure and wealth. Your gifts will be seen. VIRGO: If you're not playing doctor or nurse you must be doctor or nurse. Your technical knowledge is needed for the benefit of many. Helping the needy is good for the body and mind as well as the heart. The year of the goat will expand your dreams, and reward kind actions. LIBRA: As you emerge from your cocoon, find ways in which inner beauty relates to outer beauty. The love bug will bite you with mirages and sudden oases. You'll have to get off your camel to find out what is real. The year of the goat will broaden your social scope. SCORPIO: Find an ancestor that you admire living or dead and learn what you can about them. Give thanks to your parents for putting up with your B.S. If we don't learn from history were apt to repeat it. The year of the goat shows you how to present your gifts. SAGITTARIUS: Ears are open while your lips are flapping. Asking for what you want directly is a nice strategy. Learning another language could help you connect with more people. The year of the goat has you learning the advanced subjects, and travelling to far off places. CAPRICORN: What do people think of your values? Do you value your car, your spouse, your family, your job, and your faith? Invest in what is dear to you. The goat will take some things away from you while leaving you with perhaps something better. AQUARIUS: Don't enter a whirlpool without a lifeline. The point of no return is easily met through carelessness. You're lucky in that others will come to your aid. Celebrate your birth. The year of the goat brings harmony, and a sense of companionship. PISCES: You're able to make sense out of what most would see as chaos. Try to be a little more open about the secrets that cause you pain. Find a cure. Your intuition is astonishingly accurate.
