Okay. Not many people can say this, but we at the DK Levin Company actually ENJOY doing tax returns. The forms. The worksheets. All that complex math and figures. It may not make sense, but it’s true. We’d like NOTHING better than to sit down with you and go over your W-2’s and 1099’s and other tax information. Then you can go home and we’ll get down to the fun stuff.

Helmets for surfers? With a chin guard and a device to eliminate "surfers ear", I suppose. Don't forget the neck brace, shoulder pads, chest protector, knee and shin guards, ankle wraps, and toe protecting booties. Surfers would look like a Major League catcher on a surfboard. Rubber coated surfboards, too, for that matter. Surfwear and its accessories would take on a whole new dimension. And everyone would have to get a license from the Dept. of Surfers, Swimmers, and Ocean Users, and pass a test to prove that they know that there are sharks and reefs in the ocean, and that they might possibly drown. I don't surf, but I know many people who do, and I'm sure they would either stare blankly or bash me one if I suggested they wear a helmet. Maybe we could start another governmental agency, and call it the Dept. of Lifetime Human Protection? What we really need is for somebody to invent an armorlike skin that we could use to encase a newborn infant in (it would grow with your body) so that absolutely nothing could possibly happen to anyone from the instant they were born. Bullets and knives would just bounce off. Even if you were skydiving and your parachute didn't open, you could just hop up and walk away. You could fall while rock climbing, no problem. It could be buoyant so you couldn't drown, and fireproof so you couldn't burn, and idiot proof so you would never look bad, like writing a letter suggesting surfers wear helmets. It could have numerous sensors to indicate if, for instance, a deadly disease or dangerous drugs were nearby, and have an accident prevention alarm built in. Just think, you wouldn't even have to worry about getting beat up out at Kaanapali, and it could have a cane-burning smoke filter built in, but if you went over the speed limit, it would vaporize you. The possibilities are unlimited. But, what the heck, I suppose a helmet might be a good start. The condition of the human condition is a fascinating circumstance to behold. Kenny Hultquist, Lahaina

Planning Director Mike Foley and Mayor Alan Arakawa are insuring we will have a future here on Maui that includes real land
planning with the future in mind. Certain developers have had free reign for many years to bypass the thoughts and vision of the people who volunteer many thousands of hours on the community plans. These are a roadmap for our future and the way this island will look over the life of the plans. A plan is worked on, put in place and immediately these developers begin asking for amendments and exemptions, and they have been very successful with past administrations. Some West Maui developments are prime examples. Certain developers are telling us they are going to sue the county, which really means they are suing you and me, because we ask for our community plans to have major weight in planning decisions. Many developers are welcoming the ability to have a level playing field to work with and it is these folks and the rest of us who will truly profit from the new planning direction. Let’s work with builders and officials who will build real affordable housing for local families. How many of you have friends or neighbors or family who can’t afford a house? How many of you work 10 or more hours a day just to try to make ends meet? We need to follow the community plans. Please back the administration and conscientious developers who will work with this new opportunity as they try to make sure we have Maui and not Malibu in 10 years. Sean Lester, Haiku
ADVANCE DISPOSAL FEE KEEPS GLASS OUT OF LANDFILL There is one good reason why Hawaiian landfills are not clogged with glass. It’s called an Advance Disposal Fee (ADF) and it has made glass a winner in Hawaii. Under the state ADF program, every importer pays a tax on incoming glass containers. The money collected is used to fund the recycling of those glass containers. The recovered glass is crushed and used as road base, for sandblasting, in filtration systems and for paving, as “glassphalt.” Most of the glass packaging in Hawaii never reaches the landfill and doesn’t have to be sent back to the mainland for recycling. The great thing about this program is that it covers ALL glass containers, not just beverage containers. This means that if I buy things like olive oil and applesauce in glass rather than plastic, I can keep those containers out of the landfill. There are plans to do the same with plastic and aluminum beverage containers. In October of this year, the Hawaii Bottle Bill will require importers of beverage containers to pay an advance fee for their proper disposal. I wondered if implementation of the Bottle Bill would jeopardize the recycling of food containers. I went to BottleBillHawaii.org and was happy to find that the ADF will continue to cover nonbeverage containers. Maybe one day there will be an ADF on nonbeverage plastic and aluminum containers. Until then, I buy food packaged in glass containers, knowing that those containers will not end up in the local landfill. Camille Armantrout, Makawao

LET THE CIRCUS BEGIN It sure didn't take long for the vultures to go into their circling pattern following the in-flight explosion of the space shuttle Columbia. It couldn't have been more than two hours into the mess when CNN began airing ads for around-the-clock news coverage, complete with breathless voice-overs that sounded more fitting for the upcoming “Terminator 3” movie trailer than a national tragedy. (In your best Darth Vader voice) "Stick with CNN as we bring you complete and up-to-date coverage of the same shit you've been hearing over and over. We may not know anything yet, but we'll bring it all to you live." But then again, CNN lost sight of any moral decorum years ago with the Gulf War. After that, chaos translated into entertainment at its highest form. It's going to be interesting to see who gets hung out to dry on this one. Every Senator and Congressman not carousing with a mistress chimed in with a promise to investigate this to its very core and find out who or what is responsible. Translation: We're going to find somebody responsible for this and we're going to tar and feather them. But if they really want to find out who is responsible, why don't they just look at themselves? It's very irresponsible to ignore the impact caused by our nation's rising level of lower performance standards. Government agencies are forced to increased productivity with increasingly smaller budgets. Schools are forced to increase graduation rates regardless of whether the kids can actually formulate a complete sentence. How often do you read about rising drug use among kids? How often do you hear about how our nation's youth ranks in the bottom half in general knowledge,
compared with kids around the world? A solid portion of this nation's graduating senior can't find Canada on a map, much less spell Canada. People blow this off because nobody really wants to accept blame. It's easy to point the finger at teachers or lack of supplies but if you give kids the option of studying or smoking weed and listening to rap, what decision do you think they are going to make? If they are going through school without anyone forcing them to actually work, what happens when they get older and work for NASA? But the people who are supposed to be setting the examples aren't pulling their weight either. If the head of a government agency such as, say, NASA, cannot get a project completed on time, they'll bring someone in who can. So what does the head of the agency in question do? He cuts corners and green-lights things that are obvious warning signals in order to keep his job. Because if he doesn't cut the corners, they'll just bring in somebody who will. NASA has seen its budget cut by 40% over the last ten years, and with it came warnings from the former chairman of the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, Richard Blomberg. Last April, Blomberg told NASA management that due to money worries overshadowing safety concerns, he had never been as concerned for shuttle safety as he was at that moment. Did anybody listen? If you really need an answer just ask the families of the seven astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia.

Collective Effort Makes Art Center Thrive
AT THE
Old Poi
It sounds like a story straight from SoHo: when the big industrialists moved their operations elsewhere, the warehouses and production facilities they left behind were reclaimed and reinvigorated by local artists seeking space to make their magic. Their passion and endurance bore fruit. In Manhattan, the industrialists that left SoHo were mostly manufacturers; on Maui, Haiku was once the home of major canning operations that supported produce export. Since the canneries ceased operations their facilities have been renovated to serve local merchants, craftsmen and fine artists. The most recent development in this saga has been the opening of the Art Center in Haiku last December. The Art Center is the brainchild of George Peters, an architect and painter from New York who has lived on Maui for 30 years. A few years ago, Peters rented an office space in the Haiku Marketplace building adjacent to the warehouse then occupied by The Lumber Source. When The Lumber Source vacated, Peters arranged with the landlords to reserve the space for a center for the arts. Peters had a vision of a space dedicated not only to art, but to the artists as well. He

wanted to create a place where artists could express and exhibit, work individually and gather collectively to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Most importantly, he was eager to support local artists. The Haiku Marketplace warehouse was a perfect place to realize his vision. The gallery space is impressive. The 6000 square foot floor and 20-foot ceilings make it feel more like a museum than a cramped commercial gallery. There is room to let the art move you as you wander through corridors formed by mobile baffles that display paintings and photographs. Sculptural pieces are nestled among the baffles and larger three-dimensional installations draw the eye from across the hall. Eight artists are currently exhibiting at the Center, including Zariah, a painter whose magically inspired watercolors capture the mystical

spirit of the islands. Also Michael Ryals, whose enchanting nude photographs express the harmonies of the human form and Lew Abrams, who strives to “express spiritual principles in matter” with evocative bronze sculptural pieces such as ‘Kundalini Rising.’ The Art Center is still a work in progress. It has taken considerable effort to transform the warehouse from a lumber storage area into a comfortable workspace for fine artists. The Marketplace landlords’ sluggish response to significant structural issues in the space has slowed the transformation process, but a dedicated crew is still working hard to fulfill its promise. The construction foreman Adventure, who is also one of the artists who will work and exhibit in the finished Art Center, likens the group effort to an aircraft take-off. “We’re like a big plane taking off. We need a long runway. We’ve already got the nose gear off the ground.” The grassroots effort to build an arts haven in Haiku has inspired him. “Many hands lighten the load.” The opening on Saturday, December 21st, 2002 was a bit premature. The space was not quite fully prepared to host the volume of art or the number of people in attendance. Nevertheless, Peters believes the event was a success on the whole, especially since the silent auction raised $1000 to benefit two local victims of a drunk driver. In the next phase of development, the Center will host weekly gatherings, including movie nights on Mondays and open mike poetry readings, as well as monthly theatrical presentations. On Valentine’s Day, the Art Center will present ‘The Witch and The Sailor,” an exotic and sensual play based on a true story of love and lust. These events will also include art showings, and appointments to view will also be available. Long-term plans for the Center include the further development of studio space that will be available for rent. According to Adventure, the

Art Center will eventually house studios for glassblowing, painting, recording, and graphics reproduction. The gallery will have rotating installations as well as workshops and demonstrations. Adventure says that the Center will show “as many [artists] as will fit.” With the amount of space at their disposal, this could be as many a twenty at one time. The gallery welcomes all mediums, and especially wants to encourage local artists, including those who express an eclectic vision. Asked to describe the art that will be the mainstay of the Center, Peters says, “You won’t find it in Lahaina.” Haiku is as far from Lahaina’s commercially driven pretensions as can be. The Art Center has an altogether different character than the galleries that line Front Street. While Lahaina’s posh establishments host artists with more national name recognition, they often fall prey to their own motivations. Moving art in quantity as a profit-making enterprise means filling the modest retail spaces to overflowing and turning on the full court press when potential buyers show interest. Peters hopes to make the Center commercially successful enough to support the artists while avoiding the pitfalls associated with mixing art and big business. “The Art Center creates a space for artists who don’t fit the Lahaina stereotype. George has a totally different vision,” says Lew Abrams. He thinks the Center represents a positive development in the Maui art scene. Abrams believes that the studio/gallery combination in the big, open space fills a new niche, and “makes it a center for the artistic community. [It’s] more of a living art center than just a gallery.” What better fate could a retired canning facility hope for than to be reincarnated as a haven for the arts? You can find The Art Center in Haiku at 810 Haiku Road #265, or call 575.5077, and visit their website at artcenterinhaiku@yahoo.com.

Are Substitute Teachers getting less than they deserve? Meet David Garner. David is one of Maui’s most (if not the most), successful and sought after substitute teacher. “In the last five years, I’ve missed less than three weeks of teaching,” Garner is happy to announce. “I love teaching.” Last year he taught every day, (except maybe 2 or 3), yet his salary was a shockingly low $19,631, before taxes. On the other hand, a beginning teacher for whom Garner fills in, (World History Honors Class, Phys Ed., Physics, Hawaiian History, etc.), receives almost $34,000. Garner has eleven years teaching experience in Maui, but he only has three years of university education and is not a certified teacher. The lack of certification is not an issue financially. For instance, look at Nikhilananda. Nic has substituted in Maui off

and on since 1990. He taught math for sevenand-a-half years with the Hawaiian Job Corps, he was appointed by then Mayor Linda Lingle for the Task Force for Higher Education, is currently on various boards, has his own TV show and has many other hats and titles too numerous to mention here. Nic also has a Masters degree from the prestigious American University in Washington D.C. Last year, Nic was a substitute teacher on an average of 3 to 4 days a week. He was paid $9,561.41 for that year. Presently Nic receives the same daily pay as David Garner and other substitute teachers who may have no college at all. Does Nic resent that? Does he feel that teachers should be certified, or at least college graduates? He explains, “I don’t think you should be prohibited to teach if you only have
a high school education. There are many different ways to learn; home schooling, apprenticeship, and so on. Getting a degree isn’t always necessary to become a good teacher. Some people without a degree are sometimes actually better teachers. However, I would encourage people, if they like teaching, to get further training. The absurdity of the Department of Education (DOE) here in Hawaii is that there is no incentive.” Both Nic and Garner have a more serious complaint. They both contend that the DOE has illegally been withholding a big portion of their salary for over six years. David Hudson, a substitute teacher, brought the matter to the attention of Maui Time from the Big Island. Hudson claims that the DOE is underpaying him by over $25 a day.
The issue gets confusing, especially now that lawyers have been brought into it, but all allegations are based on the same Education Code that was adopted in 1996, Hawaii Revised Statute (HRS) 302A-624(e) which states that “…effective July 1, 1996, the per diem rate for substitute teachers shall be based on the annual step salary rate for a Class II teacher.” (See Chart below) That is being argued to mean that substitute teachers are supposed to be paid $133.73 a day instead of the $97.90 - $113.20 that they were and are currently being illegally underpaid. For over six years, the Department of Education ignored the July 1, 1996, law. In fact, most of the substitute teachers also either ignored the law or were unaware of the law, or felt, since they were not represented by a union, that
“Nic” Nikhilananda there was nothing they could do. But not so for David Garner. He wanted his money. In 1995, Garner started contacting Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) officials and then other unions to get representation for substitute teachers. When the HRS passed into law, but no money was given to the substitutes, David wrote to the Governor. He asked for hearings, he made phone calls, he contacted the media and legislative members, and consulted attorneys. “He was like a pit bull,” Nic said. “He wouldn’t let go and he wouldn’t go away.” And he was successful. On May 1, 2002, it was reported in the media that “Substitute Teachers Will Get Their Raises”. DOE spokesman, Greg Knudsen, said that Schools Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto authorized the State Department of Education to increase the pay for substitute teachers to $133.73. Furthermore, the 3 Classes of teachers would be ended and there would be one flat rate for all substitutes (All substitutes will have to be certified by 2006). In addition, department spokesman Knudsen said that the “…State education officials will make good on several million dollars owed to thousands of substitute teachers.” The estimated amount owed was three to five million dollars and possibly more. It was a short-lived victory. On May 2, the very next day, Knudsen confirmed that Hamamoto was considering a new salary scale. Instead of being based on the entry pay of a new teacher as the July 1, 1996 Statute required, the scale would be based on the pay of an uncertified teacher, which is $28,457. However, in 1996, that classification didn’t exist, and after the federal law “No Child Left Behind”, will not exist in the near future. All teachers would receive $112.92, which means
certified substitute teachers, like Nic, would actually get a pay-cut. But that would mean that Nic and others would owe the DOE. So then the DOE decided that everybody would get $113.20, which would mean that Nic and other MA graduates and certified teachers would not get a pay-cut. “It got so ridiculous and petty,” Nic remembered. “At one point I received a paycheck for about $44.” Garner contacted Attorney Eric Ferrer who agreed to take the case pro bono. Ferrer agrees that the new classification based on uncertified teachers is “…absolutely wrong.” The case is now under litigation and perhaps by more than one group. Garner’s case will be heard in the Second Circuit Court in Maui on February 12. There may also be additional filings and hearings by union representatives. All the substitutes who were interviewed agreed this isn’t about the money. This is about no respect for education in the State of Hawaii. According to Nic, “There is no benefit for the teacher and there is no accountability. I tell my students, [giving] an ‘A’ stands for Accountability, Consequences and Enabling, but the enabling I see is the schools enabling the student to use bad language, be disrespectful, smoke pot, threaten teachers, and all in all, develop a very bad attitude.” Jody, a retired teacher from the Mainland says the issue is respect. “The mentality is that teaching was always a woman’s profession and not to be taken too seriously.” Another female substitute, Jamie, agrees. “Anything that is traditionally a woman’s profession is not valued. That’s the core. On top of that, the State sets the rules for everyone, but doesn’t follow them.” Yet another sub chimed in that values have changed, especially in the home. “It’s not the kids, it’s the parents.” The parents sue the schools. Yada yada yada. The blame placing goes on and on. “We need more funding, more emphasis on education.” “We need to pay our teachers more,” another added. “There wouldn’t be a shortage of teachers if you paid them more, right?” Do any of these substitutes want to be full-time teachers? Most said no. Hudson has been substituting for over 12 years, but is not certified. “ I never really wanted to be a fulltime teacher,” he said. “I’m 60 now and I don’t see the point in certification.” Sundance (BA in Sociology), from New York City and a 14-year substitute who has taught everything from Social Studies, History, Math, Science, and Special Ed., says he never applied for full time. “It’s a nightmare, too bureaucratic and too much inner school politics. Students act up, you send them to the office and they send them right back.” He tells of one 11th grade student who was sent to the office, sent back, and he went out and stole a security vehicle. “As a substitute I can leave. I don’t have to take that home with me every day. It would be different if somebody was accountable.”
Nic doesn’t want full-time. “There is no support from the DOE or the Board of Education to excel. Students are not held accountable. Why? Because nobody cares. It is somebody else’s job.” And if it is bad for the teachers, you have to believe it is bad for the substitutes. “It takes a certain personality to sub,” says a quiet lady in the corner. “It can be very discouraging, you need someone tenacious.” She tried to be hired full-time, but her field of fine arts was cut back. “Teaching is very demanding – lesson planning, [etc.] - you have to be there from 7:30am-2pm - lots of stress.” They all hope somehow that the extra money they feel due to them will somehow make things better. But will that change anything? For sure, it will put more food on the table, or in the bank for retirement, or more pills for stress-related ailments, which is important because the substitute teachers in Hawaii are not eligible for health benefits even though they may work well over 20 hours a week (The Hawaii State law requires corporations to pay health benefits to any employee who works over 20 hours a week). After the
teachers receive their much-deserved back pay and pay raises, what will change? “I don’t like the word ‘sub’. It means ‘under’, and after all we are all educators.” They all lament having no authority, no power, no back up, and no respect. But that is another story. In the meantime, there are over 5,000 substitute teachers in the State of Hawaii. According to one survey, on any given day, 1 in every 10 classrooms needs a substitute, and within 12 years, each student will have been taught by a substitute for the equivalent of one year. Districts throughout the U.S. recognize the value of the substitute teacher. Other states are advertising and offering perks, including summer unemployment benefits. The State of Hawaii and the DOE is not only about to face a crisis, it is creating a crisis. Kudos to David Garner and the other Maui substitutes, and to David Hudson from Hilo for caring enough to fight for their rights. Perhaps those substitutes, who are on the outside of the system, yet still a part of the system, will be a key to better schools in Hawaii.

The Honolua Surf Co.’s “Legends of the Bay 2003” contest was held at Honolua Bay at The Cave on January 26th, 2003. The first “Legends of the Bay” contest was held in 1997 and is always held at Honolua Bay, because one of the highlights of this contest is the location. This contest was intended for the enjoyment of all who participate; therefore the conditions are always prime for a great day of surfing. Randy Bloomer of Honolua Surf Co. said, “We hold this contest to give back to the community and to allow the kids to surf one of the best waves in the world without the people.” This is an anticipated contest for all who have ever surfed this world-class wave -
one of the best Maui has to offer. Everyone loves Honolua Bay, made obvious by the amount of people that surf there when the NW swells start. This contest is special to the 100 mostly predetermined participants because they have an opportunity to surf at The Cave, which is one of the sickest and most perfect rights around, with only the people in their heat, a rarity for the popular Honolua Bay. In the past years of the contest the conditions were “twice as big, more like Honolua, but this year there were less entries and more organization. It’s a fun contest, the best part is being able to surf Honolua with no one out,” concludes Luke Walsh, the 1st place winner of the Junior Men 15-17 division and the Open Men HASA

division. This was the first year HASA had been associated with this particular contest. The contest began early on Sunday morning and ran until the awards were given out at sunset. The waves were in the 2-4 foot range with light winds, perfect conditions for Honolua Bay. The beautiful day was well received by everyone around, apparent by the amount of people in the water throughout the day. The great conditions for surfing as well as hanging out were an excellent excuse to stay all day and enjoy the beauty Honolua bestows. The Point, one of the other spots at Honolua Bay, was breaking for those who wanted to enjoy surfing while not entering the contest or for the contestants inbetween heats. With 9 different divisions to compete in, everyone had a chance to enjoy uncrowded Honolua Bay, which is like a prize in itself. There was also a “Legends Expression Session” division, with many of the familiar faces known to Honolua, spanning decades of experience at the once not so crowded spot, including Les Potts, taking off at The Cave in a headstand position. As the day progressed, the sets consistently pumped waves through the cave. Luke Walsh describes the final heat of the Junior Men 15-17 division as being his favorite, “There were nice sets holding up all the way through, opening up, it’s just Honolua.” Thanks to the sponsors: Honolua Surf Co., HASA, Da Kine, Ono Foods, Mama’s Fish House and the Maui Ohana, and to all of the enthusiastic participants that made this such a fun-filled day. This contest is a great chance for all of the people who love to surf at Honolua Bay to show off their abilities and have the opportunity to rip it up without the presence of everyone else (pretty much anyone who surfs!). With the contest’s limited slots for participation, surfing the Bay with no one out is pure bliss. In addition, this amazingly beautiful location, combined with the picturesque waves, make Honolua Bay a treasure to our island, which is why this contest is among the favorites of everyone involved.

CREME DE LA WEIRD
Following a religious experience, Michael Braithwaite of the mountain village of Putney, Ky., recently converted his Love World shop (selling vibrators and other porn paraphernalia) to Mike's Place (selling Bibles and other Christian items). (However, according to a December report in the San Francisco Bay Guardian, a 31-year-old government lawyer has developed a side business that may bridge both of Braithwaite's lines: The lawyer manufactures and sells high-quality, silicone sex toys in the shapes of religious icons, such as Moses, Satan and a nun, at prices of $54 to $65 each. One sex shop owner in San Francisco's freewheeling Castro district said he might stock the "Jackhammer Jesus" model, but that his Buddhist customers would be offended at the Buddha model.)
Margie Schoendinger of the Houston suburb of Missouri City, Texas, filed a lawsuit in December against George W. Bush for a lengthy series of alleged actions while he was governor, including "watching" her and "having sex" with her and her husband. The rambling and non sequitur-laden complaint, filed in Fort Bend County Court and reported on by the weekly Fort Bend Star, names the Sugar Land (Texas) Police Department as corroborating many of the plaintiff's allegations (example: that "plaintiff had seven dates, which became seven lovers, had told no lies, committed no crimes, gotten two traffic tickets, and dated George W. Bush as a minor"), but a department spokesman said no one had any idea what Schoendinger was talking about.

Edward Blaine, 61, who served 20 years in prison for a 1963 bank robbery, apparently is becoming even less competent with age, as he was arrested in January and charged with robbing the Union Bank & Trust branch in Port Royal, Va. Police said Blaine fled with the stash while $100 bills were falling out of his pockets, and then he realized as he arrived at his getaway car that he had locked the keys inside. He grabbed a log to smash the window but tossed it away in frustration, only to have it hit Emmett Lowe's truck, thus angering Lowe, who grabbed a gun and chased Blaine for 150 yards. In a struggle, Blaine shot at Lowe but hit himself in the leg, just before Lowe shot Blaine in the same leg.
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In January, a judge at London's Old Bailey released 31-time recidivist Mark Patterson, 42, after his 32nd conviction, for burglary, because Patterson claimed that he needed drug rehabilitation so he could fulfill his calling as a poet. (His subsequent ode to the judge, in part: "I've now been set free / in a blaze of publicity / so that everyone can see / my great ability.")

According to the prosecutor at the Waterloo, Iowa, theft trial of Bradley Steven Bailey, 21, in December, not only did Bailey steal a day's bank deposit for the Hardee's restaurant where he worked and leave town, but after he was arrested and jailed, he wrote a letter to the Hardee's manager saying he was sorry but that he never did get his final paycheck, and could it please be mailed to him.
WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME Ron Landon, 32, was captured by police in Belleville, Ill., in December after he ran through a Lone Oak Farm pasture to avoid arrest for several traffic tickets. Landon tried to hide in a shallow, water-filled ditch, but several horses wandered over to take a closer look at him, drawing officers' attention to the ditch. And at the January trial of alleged mobster Billy Rinick in Philadelphia, a narcotics agent described how he came to arrest Rinick at the home of his boss Joey Merlino. The agent had tracked Rinick to the upstairs part of Merlino's house and then, feigning secrecy, playfully whispered to Merlino's 4-year-old daughter, sitting on a bed, "Where's Billy?" The girl innocently pointed to the room across the hall, where Rinick was hiding under a bed.
RECURRING THEMES Latest person to believe he had been beaten up in a mugging when actually, as his doctor informed him, he had been shot in the head (with the bullet still there): Keishun Scudder, Paterson, N.J., December. Latest annual New Year's Eve death toll in Japan from eating the traditional mochi rice dumplings, which are notoriously difficult to swallow, especially for the elderly: six (with 25 more hospitalized).
ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ... Fairway Middle School (Norwich, England) barred students from throwing snowballs at anyone without permission of the target. State judge Dan Ballou, complaining that the recommended punishment for two teenage speeders was too lenient, ordered them to drop down and give him some pushups (about 40) before he issued the sentence (Lexington, Ky.). A Tacoma, Wash., woman told police that when she was about to be raped on Jan. 17, she began to pray aloud; the rapist asked if she was a Christian, and when she said she was, he apologized, pulled his pants back up and left.

“Mmm . . . lamb.” These profoundly stirring words rumbled through the teeth of known carnivore Billy Richardson as he opened the menu at Pita Paradise, and they moved me deeply. Like a wolf on the hunt they prowled through me, awakening a deep desire to devour rich, tender young flesh. There’s a reason that living well is equated with eating the “fat of the lamb”, and Pita Paradise in the Kihei Kalama Village delivers delicious, soulsatisfying food that defines good living. This chef owner/operated eatery was a very pleasant surprise for me. The little that I had heard about the place was positive but lacking in detail. Perhaps it was the name that led me to imagine a nofrills, lunch wagon kind of affair, but the reality is much more inviting. The majority of the dining space is outdoors on a simply appointed deck that connects to a warren of ramps and walkways leading toward the heart of the shops and restaurants of Kihei Kalama Village. The atmosphere is a curious mix of relaxed, open-air dining with a cozy, enclosed kind of feel. We order a round of pupus, natch. Ziziki Bread, Calamari, Shrimp Paradise, and Mediterranean Mushrooms sound like a good beginning and the prices are low enough to make all four do-able. A young bottle of Australian Shiraz should complement my lamb nicely, I think. I mentioned the lamb, right? Our first course arrives quickly and fills up our table. The spread is tantalizing and unpretentiously presented; the food speaks for itself. The chef has chosen to pan-sear the calamari instead of the usual deep-fried approach. An excellent choice, I’d say, as the tender strips are perfectly textured and melt in your mouth with the rich basil cream sauce. The Mediterranean Mushroom Caps are sautéed whole and perfectly cooked as well.
I think these plump little poppers could have used a more strongly flavored sauce, though. The Rosemary Merlot sauce fell a bit flat for me, with little of the rosemary coming through. As I taste the Paradise Shrimp, however, I begin to think that the chef has made no mistakes. I think that his palate is more subtle than mine, with my love for chile and lime. The shrimp are sautéed with a light, lemony cream sauce that I find hard not to augment with a dash of salt. On to the Ziziki Bread, which is none other than the same fresh, hand-made pita bread that will soon envelope my succulent, mouthwatering lamb. A blend of cheese and herbs are broiled onto the amazingly soft and chewy pita, which is served with an addicting sauce made from yogurt, cucumber, and dill. This stuff’s good and you can really taste the freshness. I see a pita pizza on the appetizer menu that I should have gone for, with cheese, herbs, tomato, feta, and fresh basil. For an extra $2.50 you can add chicken, steak, or . . . lamb. Hey, the menu’s got a lot of other things, too. The pitas come with Mediterranean Chicken, Grilled Veggies, Steak and Kula Onions, Italian (with tomato, basil, garlic, and olive oil), and Australian Range . . . lamb. Since both of my dining companions are having the Gyros with the fresh, yummy pitas, I decide to try a three-skewer kabob plate with chicken, steak, and lamb. The pita comes on the side with grilled veggies, ziziki sauce, and your choice of rice pilaf or potatoes. The Gyros are the best I ever tasted – very fresh. My kabob plate is an excellent, satisfying meal all the way around. The roasted potatoes are perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned. The chicken and steak are done very well but they’re no comparison to my . . . you guessed it. The lamb is bite after bite of sinful ecstasy, and the only thing I regret is letting my sense of reviewerly duty prevent me from ordering a big fat platter of it and nothing else. Pita Paradise. It’s at the Kihei Kalama Village and has really good, fresh food. Go there. Eat it. Love lamb.

Jade Mountain 2000 Mourvedre Contra Costa County $19.99
Jade Mountain has been producing Rhone style wines in California since 1984. This small production winery is very dedicated to quality rather than quantity and their 2000 Mourvedre from Contra Costa County is a prime example. Only 385 cases produced, it is rare to find this varietal in this standalone, 100% form. Pronounced (moo-ved-dra), the bulk of the production of this grape worldwide is blended with grenache and syrah, to form the very food friendly style that originated in France's Rhone Valley. Today, almost every wine region on earth has their version of a grenache-syrah-mourvedre, or GSM blend. The vines sourced for the Jade Mountain Mourvedre are more than 100-years-old, making the fruit the vines produce very concentrated. In addition, the soil of the Sacramento River delta where they are grown is pure sand, contributing to the rustic qualities of the grape. Winemaker Douglas Danielak says, "the old vines combined with low yields...make this normally rustic red grape into a fine complex wine that is both hearty and satisfying." Try the 2000 Jade Mountain Mourvedre in situations where you would usually drink a Merlot or Cabernet. The ripe raspberry and blackberry jam flavors and aromas of pepper and spice will satisfy your need for BIGNESS and dense flavors. But it’s the silky tannin (and affordability) that makes this a versatile wine in food pairing.

All About Eve Singer, songwriter, actress, and public speaker - just call her “Ms. Versatility.” As one critic proclaimed, “She is a unique entertainer, one of those people who touch you and leave you a little different, a little better, than they found you.” I’m talking about Eve Moffatt. Originally from Kansas City, this is the second time she has moved back to Maui. She first realized she could sing when she was in high school and amazed her fellow students the first time she sang in music class. She went on to win several talent contests. After college, Moffatt connected with a group of actors and started doing musical theater. Soon after that, she started singing with various bands. While performing on the mainland, Moffatt was known as a great jazz performer, but jazz is not the only type of music she excels in. “I want to be known as Hawaii’s premiere Blues and R&B singer. That’s going back to my roots,” said Moffatt. Here on Maui, some of the places Moffatt has performed at are Pacifico’s, Pizazz, Four Seasons Resort Wailea and Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, just to name a few. “I wish there were more venues here on Maui,” says Moffatt. “Hopefully more will open up.” Moffatt is currently singing at Reilly’s in Kaanapali. Recently I was privileged to not only have a lovely meal there, but I witnessed firsthand a truly charismatic performance. It’s one thing to listen to Moffatt on a CD, but it’s an uplifting experience to hear her live! She appears there with her accompanist Gene Argel on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6pm to 9pm. She also sings at the Moana Café on Friday nights from 7pm to 10pm. It’s amazing how much talent can emerge from one person. Another Godgiven gift Moffatt has is her natural acting ability. Many years ago she started doing various commercials and guest appearances on such popular TV shows as “The Jeffersons” and “All In The Family”. In

1996 Moffatt presented her original onewomen show that she wrote, produced, and starred in at the Sedona Arts Center in Arizona. The title of her show is “Mothers & Queens”. It touches on the lives of five famous jazz and blues artists: Mother of Blues - Ma Rainey, Queen of Blues - Bessie Smith, Queen of Jazz Billie Holliday, Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin, and Queen of Disco - Donna Summer. Moffatt explained that these five vocalists had the talent and tenacity to address the harsh realities of life in their day. Black music back then was dominated by males, and it was not considered proper for women to sing in public places other than church. These gutsy ladies changed all that, and we owe them our gratitude. “I’ve also written, produced, and starred in a one-woman show called ‘Sing! Dinah Sing!’” explained Moffatt. “It’s my dream to one day present it right here on Maui.” These days Moffatt is busy working on releasing her third CD called God’s Amazing Grace. “The idea of doing my CD came to me

after my minister gave me a book called Prayer Of Jabez,” said Eve. She read this book and prayed to God. “I made a deal with God,” exclaimed Eve. “I said if you want me to do this CD, you better come up with the money!” Out of nowhere a friend of hers, Cody Gillette, the owner of Emerald City Studio in Paia, said he would help put out her CD. It not only includes gospel music but also Blues, R&B, Reggae, and Hip-Hop. Three of the songs on the CD were co-written by Eve-herself. Ask and ye shall receive! “We’ve hired the best musicians on the island to work with,” said Eve. “The CD should be out on the market in a few months. I know it will appeal to the old and young alike.” Eve Moffatt is perhaps one of Maui’s bestkept secrets - but not for long. The energy this multi-talented person contributes to her work is a sight to behold. Moffatt is available for private bookings and conventions. CYBER-TRANCE SEX 10pm Saturday at DeanO’s: DJ Dyloot. Admittedly, not usually my favorite kind of, er, music - however, this DJ is from the dance-friendly bay area, and is known for his “melodic cyber-trance, pumping basslines and build ups, with melodic breakdowns” and hey, that’s cool with me.
LESBIAN...UH, LOVE 8pm Saturday at The Sandalwood Golf Course Clubhouse: The Island Lesbian Connection 4th Annual “A Happy Valentine’s Dance”. Featuring Just Us - an all female band performing live from 8-10pm. Also, Makamae & Friends, and DJ Jamie from 10pm to midnight.
BOB MARLEY SWEET LOVE Saturday at Casanova: 8th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute featuring Marty Dread, The Hawaiian Homeboy, Hoku (formerly of Ho’aikne), Teomon, Sistah Danyel, Sundance, Lanika, Nara Boone, and more special guests. SEX WITH SOUL 5 & 7:30pm Wednesday, at the Castle Theater, MACC: Maui Film Festival’s “Standing In The Shadows of Motown”. Mmm, my favorite kind! A little wine, food, friends, great music and movie - maybe it’s even sex for the soul!

FILM
Not your average horror sequelites Unlike most hurriedly written sequels that Hollywood dashes off to instantly cash in on a film's initial box-office success, "Final Destination 2" is an intricately woven horror sequel with scads of black comedy and enough heart-stopping gory sight gags to satisfy the most eager teenage audiences. The film's opening action sequence, a highway pileup, is one of the most intense and shocking car accident scenes ever shot. The high-speed disaster is a premonition that Kimberly Corman (A.J. Cook - "The Virgin Suicides") soon acts on, thereby preventing the deaths of a considerable group of people. Inspiration from horror films such as, "The Omen" and "The Birds" crop up against "Destination's" starkly revealing musical score. Death is everywhere and its fear suffering, cold sweat condition is energetically expressed by the film's ensemble of young actors. Clear Rivers (Ali Larter - "Legally Blonde") is the sole survivor from the original "Final Destination," and brings herself out of a self-imposed life in a mental hospital's padded cell to help Kimberly attempt to rescue the list of doomed individuals she has sub-consciously put on a date with Death. Police Officer Thomas Burke (stoically played by Michael Landes) chaperones our group of death-dodgers as a slightly older and wiser voice of reason amidst a hail of decapitation and jagged impaling. Nevertheless, "Final Destination 2" is a more serious kind of slasher film, with omnipresent Death already existing inside every character that we watch meet their shuddering appointments with doom. Death is a big guy and here he gets loose around fire hazardous kitchens, electrical outlets, power lines, fire escapes, elevators and especially near automobiles, motorcycles and trucks. The "Final Destination" franchise is a fresh addition to Horror genre
because it plays on a common teenage existential fear of death. Here death is expressed as an evil attacking adversary that can only be beaten by diligent regard to dangerous situations. The film can be read as a textbook of cautionary propaganda exploiting fears of sudden or torturous death. Little things like turning off appliances when you leave the house take on enormous importance. Laughing down Death's hollow face, is an opportunity and "Final Destination 2" provides copiously. The initial "Final Destination" tapped into every airline passenger's fear of having a panic attack on an airplane before takeoff and barely escaping a terrible accident. With that simple equalizing concept, the film went on to overtly expose American suburbia as a wellspring of danger waiting to happen. Sudden death was introduced as a cameo character that could subtract a character in the blink of an eye. By its peddling between sudden occurrences and chain reactions of danger to kindle its situations, both "Destination" movies share a suspenseful, horrible and hilarious quality that is of a unique brand. You get a physiological charge watching "Final Destination 2" that comes from its calculated style, tone, color scheme, music and pacing. The movie may dare to laugh at death, but it never mocks the dark force that eventually claims us all. There's even a trace of authentic fear running through each actor's performance that adds emotional weight to the story. The McGuffin that holds the plot together puts the resolution obligation on a pregnant Latino woman to deliver her baby, thereby reversing the spell that Karen has unknowingly started. This cliched idea of introducing new life as the only way to defeat death works sufficiently for tying up the movie with a life affirming ending, and releases our newfound heroes Kimberly and Thomas to set about living a life not so near death until the next sequel comes out. The "Final Destination" movies represent a modern-day "Friday The 13th." Death by numbers seems to never lose its appeal.

DIFFICULTLISTENING
BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE
Tang Li Wheebs & The Mole Present: MAUI? PART TWO: We put together a compilation CD in order to showcase Maui-based and Maui-related musicians. We got 1000 copies of it pressed and we've been giving them out for free. Don't feel bad that you haven't been given one - now is your chance to get it. All you have to do is send $1 (shipping/handling fee) to us at MAUI? Compilation; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768. Alternatively, you can visit www.motionrecordings.com/MAUI and download or stream the entire album. (There are also links to artists' web pages, ordering, etc.) The following is the continued (from last week) song-by-song description of each of the artists on the CD.
8. DEMUNE "FIREFLY" One of Maui's best MC's, as well as an expert producer and all around nice guy. He is a pleasure to catch performing with his blend of underground styles, experimental sounds and personal reflections. Watch out for his next level shit in late 2003.
9. KHRINJ "THE CORE OF THIS" As many local people already know, Khrinj is a searing metal band that tears up venues all around Maui. They will totally kick your ass (metaphorically). "The Core Of This" is a rough mix from a forthcoming album. Even though it's only a rough draft, it will still totally kick your ass. So brace yourself for a full-on sonic assault.
10. THE MOLE "CAITLIN" Premiere artist in the genre of post hip-hop and co-author of this very column that you hold in your hands, The Mole also holds down the Motion Recordings label and inspires us all to not slack as much as we may care to.
11. TANG LI WHEEBS "OMP" Tang Li makes a lot of tunes like this on his computer. They're funny little electronic tunes; a tad abrasive but still fun enough to be tolerable, like Wheebs himself. "Omp" may eventually appear on a full-length Tang Li Wheebs album if he ever gets his act together.
12. HINTERLANDER "PAPER CRANE" Serving up a totally satisfying blend of tender indie rock blended with a bit of punk freakouts, Hinterlander makes one very happy. Heidi Nelms leads this bunch towards a bright future and hopefully many more wonder-filled collections of songs. Check out their first full-length album on Snail On A Stick produced by Will The Moore.
13. CARTOON MONSTER "SEASHELLS" This song showcases Monster's extremely different vocal style. He sounds like that kid in The Shining when he's saying, "redrum". Backing up these strange yet somehow appealing vocals, Monster plays xylophone bass and a soothingly saturated electric guitar. This song is really cool. It's from his new album that might be available by the time you read this.
14. ANCIENT MITH "GHOSTWRITER" A track from a short-lived resident of our beautiful island, now residing in far away Colorado. Lately he has been threatening to come back to Maui and finish recording his new album with Demune and maybe play a show or two.
15. RUSSELL GREENLEAF "BOLEVARDE TREES (A CLIMAX SPECIES)" Sharing his time between Maui and New York, Russel Greenleaf makes really cool music. Playing drums, guitar, bass, and moog keyboard, as well as singing, his compositions are richly textured and full-sounding. This is due largely to the fact that when he records into his 8-track recorder, all of the levels are pushed way up into the red, creating a nice saturated sound.
16.DEMUNE AND TANG LI WHEEBS "HORIZON LINE DANCER" Having no idea what Horizon Line Dancer really is, even though I co-wrote the track, this song is a fun romp. Demune swears it has to do with a love triangle between his music, a Las Vegas stripper, and an Asian classical musician. I'm not sure if I believe him.
17. TERMS/ONE "WE DO IT" The elusive crazy man from Spokane delivers up an ode to his love for hip-hop. One day he may be back to live here for a bit longer than his last 6-month stay, but for now we hope he is happy living on the continent again.
18. LOGANPROJECTS "WORDS AREN'T REAL (MOLE REMIX)" A Mole-crafted take on one of their tracks from the full-length release, Character Assassination. More underground hip-hop from the Motion Recordings empire which is a bit more for your head than the dance floor. These guys hail from Maine, which also starts with an M, like Maui.
19. #20 DRAGONFLY "IKU" #20 Dragonfly is a super-duo featuring Tang Li Wheebs and Will The Moore. This, from an upcoming full-length album, is a weird-ass song featuring distorted drum machine beats, backwards guitars, waking Demune up, and other freaky noises. Were these guys on drugs when they made this or what? Send music to be reviewed (and demos for possible inclusion on the next comp) to: Mole & Wheebs; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768. The Mole is a pre-school sub and the owner of Motion Recordings (www.motionrecordings.com). Tang Li Wheebs wrote 13 novels in his youth and likes to ski (www.snailonastick.com).

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON
BY KOZMIC KEV
I'm a 31-year-old virgin (male), and I don't understand why. I've been on dates, but no women seem interested. I can't blame them: Unemployed economist, glasses, with a digestive disease making me 138 pounds at 5-foot-9, personality of a tree (hobbies: history, horror novels, math, and sports). If the monk life isn't my goal, what should I do? –Lonesome Loser
ARIES: Your social reflexes continue to be tested. You have people to do and things to see. More freedom is coming your way. The work scene is getting looser and more relaxed. By Tuesday, you should be making new friends. TAURUS: Stay on your toes. People are watching you. You may be due a promotion. The moon in Taurus this weekend affirms your leadership qualities. Your taste turns toward the exotic and the alien. You're as smart as you are willing to learn. GEMINI: The adventure is on. You will enjoy getting lost as every corner and every ravine will become a delightful new discovery. Whether you're learning about fishes or flowers, the delights of the natural world will refresh you. CANCER: You're seeking out shelter amidst a storm. Staying calm in spite of circumstances will help you move through adversity. This is not a time to resist and fight. Much is out of your control. On the sweet side is your ripeness for love. LEO: The efforts to help others over the past few weeks are paying off. Your good luck is still with you. You might just have to look for blessings in different places. Having a friend with similar goals will add something to the excitement and pleasure of the journey. VIRGO: Serving others has always been your calling card. Make sure you're letting others know what your service is. Taking on new responsibilities will require a sense of devotion and good planning. Know that you are at your creative best. LIBRA: Being playful can be fun. You need to get your game on. You're able to come across as everyone’s best friend. Perhaps you'll throw a party for an Aquarian friend. You’re getting into your living space. Beautify your home with art. SCORPIO: Financial concerns will be lifted. You'll be taking the right action and you will see the fruit of these actions as results. The season of introspection is here. Break out of your comfort zone. Allow yourself to be more openminded as to what can take place in your life. SAGITTARIUS: Eat your poi slowly and with gratitude. Clean hands are also a good idea. This is your season to see the world through poetic eyes. You can mirror other people’s good times. Your challenge is to show up on time for your next opportunity. CAPRICORN: After all you've been through by now, you must be an efficiency expert. Define the strengths you have in terms of what you have to share. You make a good presentation. People are beginning to find you more attractive. AQUARIUS: After the knockdown, sloppy, drunken-ass party is over, you need to pick up the pieces and proceed with life like nothing ever happened. Watch out for deceivers and backbiters. You deserve friends that are real with you. PISCES: In order to appreciate a win, at first you must lose. This is a good time for releasing the things that are no longer useful for you. Dreams reflect ways for your subconscious to alert you to conditions in your psyche that haven't been dealt with completely. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Robert Nesta Marley 2/6/45, Ronald Reagan 2/6/11, Ted Koppel 2/8/40 - Koz McKev can be reached for comments by e-mail: kozmickev@sunset.net
ZERO WORSHIP
Ever wonder why men's cologne has names like "Eau Sauvage," not "Eau What Died In There?" and "Dune," not "Dumpster"? Just a guess, but it probably has something to do with a desire to see cologne invited off store shelves and onto credit card statements. That said, how a particular cologne actually smells is much less important than you'd think. So, you're unemployed, skinny, and you have less-than-perfect vision. Oh yeah, then there's your stump-like charm. Sure, like the rest of us, you could use a little improvement here and there. But, correct me if I'm wrong: People are generally able to pass you in the supermarket without shouting, "Cleanup in aisle five!" You can usually get within inches of a woman without triggering electronic sensors that bark, "Loser! Loser! Back away from the woman!" (like those storeexit anti-theft devices that sneer, "Shoplifting cur! Do those leather pants belong to you?!"). You're a loser like Janeane Garofalo's ugly. See, there's Ugly and then there's Janeane Garofalo Ugly, which is being a really beautiful woman who dresses like a plumber and can't stop blabbing about what a loser hag she is. Yo, Janeane: Take off those big men's pants, throw some Revlon in the air, and stand under it...yeah, we should all be so ugly. Like with Janeane, your problem isn't that you're a loser; it's that you think you're a loser and you advertise yourself to women that way. Consider your audience. As chick-magnets go, communicating self-loathing is up there with referring to your head as "Club Med For Fleas": "Step right up, ladies! Watch fleas sunbathing on my ears on tiny beach towels — something to do while you're waiting for men who think more highly of themselves." And who are these men? Let's see...homeless crack addicts with missing teeth, just for starters. Why do they think more highly of themselves? Simply because they decided they would. Now, it's one thing, if you're a young Brad Pitt, to say, "Mmm, think I'll roll my golden blond self out of bed and go audition to be a movie star." But if, like Danny DeVito (whom one director called "the most confident man in Hollywood"), you're shaped like a beach ball and stand slightly taller than the average coffee table...you've gotta be in on the big secret: Making it isn't about having something going on. It's about BELIEVING you have something going on...just like it says in that self-help classic, "The Little Engine That Could." It's really that simple: Present yourself as the guy who gets the girl, as opposed to the skinny, 5-foot-9 tumor that needs excising, and you should actually get the girl...thus eliminating your predisposition to present yourself as an unwanted growth loitering at the bottom of the surgical waiting list.
