Our county is in trouble. As more and more information about Kimo Apana's administration becomes public, it has brought a large number of questions to light. His non-bid contracts, the loss of Paluea beach as people gave to his campaign and he did not sign bond issues to buy the beach, over 90% of his campaign contributions coming from off island, trades of land and money in the last few days of his administration. His shredding of documents for days on the 9th floor before abandoning the mayor's office with no turnover to the new administration. Reserve funds of the county gone - large debt in general revenue bonds - no trail as to where much of this money was spent. The list goes on. Daily we see the grand jury probe into Mayor Harris indicting people for campaign fraud - we always hear Kimo Apana listed as one of the recipients of the funds. I call on investigative reporters, the State of Hawaii, the Campaign Spending Commission, the Honolulu Grand Jury and the present administration to do a full audit of all of the last 4 years of contracts, political contributions and contacts by the Apana administration. It is not time to sweep it under the carpet. Just as you or I would have to face the law if we did illegal activities and it is brought to light, so does Kimo Apana. Jason Edjington, Kihei

Are you happy with all of the shoreline development and massive construction, clogged highways and time spent in your car waiting to get home after work? If not, you and I are in the majority here on Maui. One of the reasons so much new construction was approved over the last several years is the Maui County Planning Commission and its overwhelming support for almost every development. Now Norma Piltz, Planning Commissioner Randy Piltz's wife, is leading the charge to insure there will be no dissenting voice in the new Commission. 93 names of construction people and their families, along with an official letter from the Operating Engineers Union have put their names on a petition against Dr. Diane Shepherd becoming a new planning commissioner. Don't these people get it? We are really tired of the build-till-we-drop mentality. We need BALANCE to the board. A blue ribbon panel of Maui County citizens spent many weeks and picked the 80 people for these nominations - we owe it to them to listen to their choice over any effort by Norma. Please -fax letters to the county councilmembers and/or come to testify on March 6th at 1:30 PM – it’s important. George Edgington, Lahaina

rorism of most of the world. We have installed most of the horrible dictators of the world. Many socialistic democracies have been replaced by military dictatorships, thanks to CIA guidance, US money, and US weapons, and in many cases, covert military assistance. Saddam Hussein was backed by the USA. His weapons of mass destruction and biological weapons were originally a gift of the USA war machine. The truth is that the USA is the undisputed leader of overt and covert terrorist activities on an ongoing basis since WWII. If we want peace and an end to terrorism, we need to stop being a bully and terrorist ourselves. We need to stop manufacturing and selling terrorist weapons. If we want to have homeland security we could follow the example of Switzerland, the oldest democracy (over 800 years). Switzerland is the only country of Europe that was never concurred by the European royal class. They vote about once every three weeks and have been for hundreds of years. They have every man trained in the military on how to use a weapon, everyone takes their weapon home and can always protect himself and his country. Let's protect ourselves and leave our neighbors to their own way of life. The UN is the appropriate organization to help arbitrate disputes between nations. If the US acts unilaterally it will become the kettle calling the pot black! George Chyz, Haiku

The Bush Administration proposes the only path to peace is war, however the majority of humanity knows peace is the only path to peace. If the USA wants to stop terrorism we need to begin by ending our relentless ter-

I am surprised and disappointed at the very fishy transaction by outgoing Maui Mayor James Kimo Apana, on December 20. He placed $330,000 of county money into escrow as a deposit to purchase two buildings in Wailuku from a hui consisting of Warren Unemori Engineering, Arisumi Brothers, Fong Construction Company, Robert Ohata, and C. Earl Stoner Jr. Apparently neither the mayorelect or the Council members were told about this until after the money was placed in escrow. The Water Board had no authority over this money as of December 5, 30 days after the charter change on November 5, according to county attorney Ed Kushi. That is why outgoing Mayor Apana was able to sign the purchase documents. I wonder if this had anything to do with the sudden resignation of Peter Rice as Water Board chairman? I hope the new Mayor Arakawa and the Council will make public all of the circumstances surrounding this deposit. If the hui collects this money, can they be barred from future county contracts? And I sure hope Kimo doesn't try to run for office again while I'm around. Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

A SIMPLE PLAN In a move that is sure to have implications to drug trafficking in the U.S., the President of Bolivia is going to start allowing the cultivation of coca in a desperately poor region of his nation. The eradication of the coca leaf, the main ingredient in making cocaine, has long been seen as a vital step towards eliminating the drug flow to the U.S. From American eyes, the decision is simple: don't allow the growing of the plant. Cocaine destroys lives and therefore the decision should be easy, right? Not if you live in a third-world country where any job is worth keeping. Enter the simple solution: recognize the importance of hemp. If hemp were to be legalized in the U.S., its cultivation could be promoted in other countries, countries such as Bolivia. Their citizens are farmers, not drug dealers, and they probably couldn't care less if they were growing coca or hemp. The Bolivian president surely does not want a reversal of fortune with the U.S. after earning the distinction of becoming the most successful drug fighting country in South America. And he hopefully doesn't want to increase the supply of cocaine in the world. So why is he doing it? Because he has no other options – and we're not giving him any. By recognizing that hemp (the woodlike part of the marijuana plant) can be genetically altered so it does not contain any form of THC (the mind-altering part of the marijuana plant), American legislators should be able to come to terms with the fact that hemp is a completely harmless product. As of right now, it has such a negative connotation due to its relationship with the marijuana plant that virtually no politician with hopes of getting reelected will stand up for its use. But to genetically alter the plant to remove the formation of marijuana would be like creating the bark of an

orange tree but with absolutely no possibility of growing oranges. With that in mind, it's easy to understand that a genetically altered hemp plant is no more likely to create THC than the bark from the orange-less tree is to create Vitamin C. Once the aging legislators leftover from yesteryear leave office and we elect lawmakers whose eyes on the future include fixing the world's problems and not simply procuring their diplomatic immunity for another term, we may start putting hemp into commercial use. This in itself would give the farmers of Bolivia, not to mention Columbia, something to grow rather than coca leaves. Would it get rid of cocaine production completely? Probably not but it sure would be a good first step. Plus, we would have rope, clothing, and paper products that didn't need to be recycled lest we fear of ruining our planet. The fact that this would also cut down on rain forest destruction which would in turn help the atmosphere return to breathable levels is another nice by-product. It all seems so simple.

REALITY BITES I used to think it was all that extra-curricular fun I had in college that made me question reality but now I'm beginning to think it might be the heads of major TV programming. I mean, do we need a new trend in nightly TV or what? This whole "Reality TV" thing reminds me of Milli Vanilli and New Kids on the Block for some reason. Everything is so obvious and staged and yet people still buy into it. It's like the trend in movie theaters of remaking old classic films. There is such a need to create entertainment that will definitely make money the studios won't take a chance. And that means there is no room for creativity. And just wait: even though it's happened plenty of times before, some lady who gets duped into marrying a guy who says he's rich but ends up being a ghetto dweller will file a lawsuit against the creators of Joe Millionaire. After all, the TV makes us do it, right?

This is for the guy who shamelessly litters his fast food in the streets of Lahaina. This is for the parents of the children who don’t teach thier kids to put trash in its place. I’m no saint, but I’m confused as to what kind of person can toss a McDonald’s super-sized soda cup into the bushes and not even think twice about what they’ve done. This Eh Brah is for all you fuckers who complain about what’s being done to this paradise, then shamelessly discard your leftover trash. It’s apparent to me there is some sort of belief that if you leave trash where people can see it, that “someone” will clean it up. That sucks. Hypocrites, you’re all ignorant hypocrites. I once saw this program about a man who made his own little island out of leftover glass bottles, and milk cartons and such. It floated! He lived on it! Get to work, guys. -Giving a Hoot about Maui

Sea School Keeps Education Afloat Ocean Outreach programs make learning real - and fun - for Maui's youth

Learning first-hand from sea experts The ancient Buddhist saying, "All true knowledge is a result of direct experience", is one that fits well with the intent of Pacific Whale Foundation's Ocean Outreach program. It's one thing to sit in a classroom and study marine environments and the creatures that inhabit the ocean - but it's a far better thing to get out on a boat, stare into a tide pool or swim beneath the surface for a first-hand look at the subject. Managed by the education department of the Pacific Whale Foundation under the guidance of director Merrill Kaufman, the Ocean Outreach program offers a wide variety of field trips, laboratory experience, scientific study and some fun, too. When Maui kids - from preschoolers through high school students - learn about the marine environment that's offshore of their island home by interacting with the ocean, it becomes real to them in ways that will last longer than just reading it from a book. For 23 years Pacific Whale Foundation has offered marine education programs which include taking students out on their boats, so some of today's kids are the second generation in their family to participate. The Ocean Outreach program now uses the catamaran "Ocean Spirit" as a floating classroom for those trips. At 65 feet in length, the "Ocean Spirit" can hold 125 people and provides smooth cruising and plenty of space for those who've never been on a boat before. Along with a wide variety of other classes and programs offered under the Ocean Outreach umbrella, the education department of the foundation reaches out to some 12,000 students every year. Kaufman is pleased with the way teachers

have embraced her department's efforts to provide them with a unique teaching tool. "What sets us apart from other programs is that each voyage is preceded by a comprehensive classroom presentation in the school," she says. "We have a commitment to coming into the classrooms first, then we do our follow-ups on the water. We also enjoy the chance to explain why something is the way it is - not just providing information, but explaining what that information means, and why it matters." Kaufman admits to one weakness in the way Ocean Outreach operates - "We rarely say no to a request from schools or teachers. If there is a way that we can meet their needs, we'll do it. Fortunately, we're very flexible in what we do." Much of the material available through Ocean Outreach is aimed at helping teachers meet objectives established by the state Department of Education. A key component of Ocean Outreach classes are their built-in compliance with the state's HCPS performance standards. According to Kaufman, the curriculum was developed based on those standards right from the start, which makes it possible for any Maui school or teacher to stay within DOE guidelines for the material being presented. Even the names of the classes to be offered are interesting - "Spineless Wonders", a lab class on invertebrates; "Mano - Feared and Revered" will explore the always fascinating subject of shark behavior; and one that's sure to be a favorite for many of Maui's youth will be "Surfin'ology - the Science of Surfing." There's a lot more - teacher training workshops; online support and fact sheets for teachers; a Wild Whale and Dolphin Research Project for kids in middle and high school; scientific lectures; a Family Ocean Discovery

series; Junior Naturalist training; plus weekend and after-school programs. Field trips that combine program activities with community service are also part of the effort to educate local kids. This month, for example, on Feb. 8, a "Conserving Ocean Resources Education" (CORE) program will offer an overnight stay in Haleakala Crater, where kids will help park rangers do conservation work. CORE is an open program for older youth. The only requirement is that you do the service work that is the heart of each planned event, then you can join in the fun that comes later that month. In recent months, CORE has held events such as a Kealia Pond cleanup and an `Iao Valley hike and swim. The education department staffs the Pacific Whale Foundation Free Whale Information Station at McGregor Point lookout, offering expert tips on locating whales and information on recent whale activity to anyone who stops at the popular whale-watching spot. There's also a Reef Interpretation Station set up at Ulua Beach on Tuesdays and Thursdays to offer information about coral reefs and conduct free guided snorkel tours of reefs in the area. All of this is done with a staff of ten along with several volunteers, some who return to offer their services every year. Interns also come and contribute as they work on their own higher education. The growing education department already draws speaking requests from seminars around the world and won the prestigious National Marine Educators Association Award in 1997. According to Pacific Whale Foundation president and founder Greg Kaufman, it's all "part of the concept of educating the public

from a scientific perspective about whales and their ocean home. Even local kids need that exposure, he says. "Although they grow up on an island in the middle of the Pacific, kids are given little chance to discover the near-shore and deep water marine environment because of DOE field trip regulations." "We're trying to roll the ocean into the classroom, he says, "and find innovative ways to bring them in contact with the sea - without getting them wet above the ankles." The long-term goal of the foundation involves more water exposure for those kids. "Our dream is to one day be able to take every kid on guided snorkel tours where they can learn first-hand from our experts about life in the sea," says Kaufman. As part of that expansion, this summer Pacific Whale Foundation will open their new Ocean Science Discovery Center at Ma`alaea Harbor Village. Available to all Maui residents and visitors, the center will feature two large classrooms with laboratory equipment and multi-media tools. The Discovery Center will also be used as a convenient venue for a wide variety of events relating to the marine environment. Community support is vital to the continued growth of Ocean Outreach programs. Equipment of every conceivable kind, vehicles for transporting kids from classrooms to the field, and warm bodies who care about kids are always being sought. The Whale Day Celebration is just one of several funding sources for Kaufman's department. Other funds come from the educational whale-watches and marine eco-tours conducted by the foundation. In return, whale-watch trips are supported by trained naturalists on board every vessel. For more information, to volunteer your services or to donate equipment - such as a much-needed 15-passenger van, for instance call the Pacific Whale Foundation education staff at 249-8811.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Though state tax revenues are shrinking nationwide, Kansas reported in January that taxes paid on marijuana sales were up 5 percent and taxes paid on cocaine, methamphetamine and other hard drugs were up 20 percent. As other states do, Kansas sells revenue stamps (in denominations from $10 to $1,000) that dealers are supposed to affix to the drugs in order to sell them. Even though such sales themselves are illegal, law enforcement agencies are forbidden from accessing information on the sellers (and if they did, any conviction would probably be tossed out, as based on unconstitutional self-incrimination). A Revenue Department spokesman guessed that most people who buy the stamps are merely collectors.

WAR NEWS People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote to Yasser Arafat deploring public bombings, at least when the bomb is delivered (as one was on Jan. 26 in Jerusalem) on a donkey. (Said a PETA official, "It's not my business to (comment on) human wars.") And to help the U.S. military, a Las Vegas porno distributor offered 500 videos free of charge (except for postage) to servicemen as thanks for their sacrifice. And in Cebu, Philippines, in February, a German man, Frank Oesterle, was detained by police after knifing an American tourist at a bar; they were arguing over their respective countries' views on imminent war in Iraq (i.e., U.S., fight; Germany, don't fight).

CAN'T POSSIBLY BE TRUE According to trial coverage in the Omaha World-Herald in October, the prosecutor of accused Omaha sexual assaulter Akhiktemelo Braimah said that DNA evidence indicated that the probability of another "African-American" besides Braimah having committed the assault was "1 in 30.3 sextillion" ("303" followed by 20 zeros). (30.3 sextillion represents 5 trillion times the number of people of all nationalities on Earth right now and 303 billion times the likely number who have ever lived.) (Braimah pleaded no contest two days later.)

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Tyrone Jermain Hogan, 20, pleaded guilty in Los Angeles in February to attempted carjacking, six months after trying to steal a van that unbeknownst to him at the time was carrying a martial arts team visiting from Florida International University; the students, said their instructor, held Hogan "like a pretzel on the ground" until police arrived. And Edgar A. Brown, 27, was arrested in Worthington, Ohio, in January and charged with robbing the First Merit Bank; police were tipped off after Brown paid his electric bill at a Columbus store using red-stained $50 bills.

OUR CIVILIZATION IN DECLINE In a still largely underreported 1996 study by St. Louis University (revealed by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in January), researchers concluded that at least 40 percent of Catholic nuns in the United States have suffered either sexual abuse, sexual exploitation or sexual harassment, with nearly half of the instances perpetrated by priests or other nuns. The results were published in two obscure journals in 1998, but the study's sponsors otherwise squelched the news out of a desire not to harm the church's then-still-virtuous reputation.

UPDATES ON NEWS OF THE WEIRD STORIES

Retired pediatrician Alva J. Hartwright, 63, pleaded guilty in February to sexually assaulting two boys, age 11 and 14 at the time, by giving them enemas (part of a 30year pattern, said prosecutors, of administering enemas to as many as 40 boys). When police arrested Hartwright at his home in June in Morrisville, Pa., they found "feces everywhere," with "so much feces in one room (that) it was impassable," said an officer. Also found were "thousands" of photographic images of boys receiving enemas, all of which, insisted Hartwright, were "medically necessary" and not sexually gratifying to him.

The late composer John Cage's "As Slow As Possible," now being played once, lasting 639 years, at a church in Halberstadt, Germany, has so far taken 17 months just to get the organ's bellows inflated and now will take 18 months more just to play the composition's first three notes, according to a February BBC report. And former stockbroker Warren D. Matthei, 51, who has sat in jail in Philadelphia since 1996 rather than pay his first wife child support that now amounts to about $350,000, declined federal judge Jerome Simandle's offer of release in January, claiming that he did not want to put pressure on his 82-year-old mother (who would have to sign over a security interest in her home as a condition of release); Matthei lived it up in Europe with his second wife but then inexplicably returned home in 1996.

A disabled woman, noticing a fire in her apartment but having no telephone, alerted neighbors as best she could by firing several gunshots through a wall and out a window (Omaha, Neb.). State Sen. Ben Robinson introduced a bill to require restaurants serving barbecue meat to supply cloth napkins (which he said a campaign donor had asked him to do 15 years earlier) (Oklahoma City). The tourist director in the nation of Liechtenstein (60 square miles, population 33,000, between Switzerland and Austria) said corporations interested in holding conferences there would be allowed to rent the entire country, with the cooperation of all local officials.

BY JEROME KELLNER

On her last trip to Maui, Joan Rogers of Glendale, California went boogie boarding off Kihei. After visiting Maui every year for the past 25 years, and swimming and boogie boarding here many times, Rogers felt no fear. But the first wave she took off on instantly pounded her into the sand, fracturing her left arm in three places. She was rushed to the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment, released, and spent her last 24 hours on Maui a shaken, crippled and unhappy visitor. She is hardly alone. Outside the relative safety of their condominium, resort or bed and breakfast, visitors to Maui regularly suffer unexpected calamities, as tourists like Rogers find out. Besides surfing

book was written on just that subject. Seasoned Maui visitors like Joan Rogers can overestimate their own competence, and underestimate Maui’s potential dangers. Rogers admitted she had no idea the shore break here could be so powerful. She, like virtually all Maui tourists, never expected to wind up in the emergency room, but more than a few do. Maui Memorial Medical Center admits more American tourists than Queens Medical Center on Oahu, a statistic that surprised Kathy Cain, CFO at Maui Memorial, when she heard it. Cain says she has heard another statistic, an erroneous one, that 40 percent of those admitted to Maui Memorial are tourists. The figure is closer to 10 percent, Cain says,

shadowed by the shuttle catastrophe. The stories involving visitors that are almost always front page news are shark attacks, fatal or otherwise dramatic auto or air crashes, and physical assaults. Along with the ocean, Maui’s increasingly crowded roadways expose tourists to the most potential for trouble, says Lt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Division. Despite the recent case of the premier of a Canadian province arrested here for DUI, Lt. Hirata says “per capita” local residents are more likely to drink and drive than tourists. He gives visitors high marks in one critical driving area—wearing seat belts, partly because so many Maui visitors are from California, which he says

dozen visitors have been killed in both fixed-wing airplane and helicopter crashes over the past 12 years here. Last July, three visitors and one Maui resident, who was piloting his private plane, were killed when they crashed in Hana. In 2000, the pilot and six passengers in a tour helicopter were killed when it crashed in Iao Valley. Seven were killed in another helicopter crash in 1992, when it slammed into the south side of Haleakala. Five months earlier in the same year, nine aboard an air tour plane died in a crash near the summit of Haleakala. No where do Maui visitors experience more misadventures than in the ocean. Maui’s tropical waters draw ocean users

mishaps, common catastrophes involving visitors include hiking and biking accidents, shark bites, near-drownings, actual drownings, snorkel and SCUBA diving accidents, falls from high places, motor vehicle accidents, air crashes, and increasingly, physical assaults. It is a subject the Maui Visitors Bureau does not advertise, but Maui, for all its paradisiacal trimmings, can be downright dangerous to visitors. Why do so many visitors end up in Maui’s hospital, emergency room or worse? A primary reason is that visitors are visitors, unfamiliar with Maui’s turf and surf, which can be as dangerous as they are alluring. Maui, like any popular tourist destination, experiences visitor mishaps. Tourists visiting Yellowstone National Park have suffered so many fatalities over the years that an entire

and a bit higher if only emergency room numbers are considered. Whatever the actual number, some of the medical center’s highest praise comes from visitors who are used to the more impersonal care at mainland hospitals. Maui Memorial’s social workers and other staff regularly help stricken visitors and family members find housing, return to the mainland, arrange for accommodations near the hospital and more. “We’ll get someone who’s drowned and have the poor wife to take care of,” Cain said. “We do all we can to help.” Deaths involving visitors are common enough that sometimes they are barely noted by the local media. The day after the Feb. 1 shuttle disaster, a 25-year-old visitor drowned off Paia. The story in Maui’s daily paper was a couple of short paragraphs in the inside section, well over-

has one of the nation’s highest rates of seat-belt compliance. Seat belts weren’t an issue when one California visitor suffered a motorcycle accident here near the end of 2001. The 53-year-old was riding a rented motorcycle near Maalaea Harbor when the area’s notoriously strong winds caused him to lose control of the vehicle. He struck a guard rail, with fatal results. Lt. Hirata, who travels quite a bit, would like to see better road signage, or “way finding” for tourists. The airlines have visitors as a captive audience for hours, and he would like to see them make good use of that time with public service announcements emphasizing the need for safety in the ocean and on the highway while visiting Hawaii. Air accidents are not nearly as common as ocean or highway ones, but close to two

of every sort from around the world. Most are inexperienced and largely ignorant of local conditions. As such, they are ocean accidents waiting to happen. Besides dozens of non-fatal accidents, Maui’s ocean regularly claims the lives of visitors, most recently the February drowning off Paia. No news generates more media coverage than shark attacks, and visitors make up a sizable share of Maui ocean users who are bitten by sharks. One of the most recent encounters added to the debate about how far authorities should go in warning ocean users about the potential for shark attacks. In November, a California woman swimming off Kaanapali was bitten by a shark on the shoulder and arm. She said that if she had known of another attack exactly three weeks earlier off Kihei, she would not

have been out there. In October of 2000, a California woman survived being bitten twice by a shark off Olowalu, in the same waters where one of Maui’s few confirmed human deaths from a shark attack occurred. Despite protests from ocean activity owners who said it might be bad for their business, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources in 2002 posted permanent signs warning of sharks in the ocean around Olowalu. The Olowalu sign controversy shows the challenges faced by authorities entrusted with public safety, including that of visitors. Agencies can be attacked when they do act, and when they don’t. In this case, the DLNR posted Maui’s first permanent shark warning signs simply as a matter of safety, the DLNR chairman said. One of the considerations the agency took into account was a

report that a shark attack victim heard Maui Memorial Medical Center staff members refer to Olowalu as “the shark pit.” The victim and his girlfriend were upset to hear that the area had a local reputation for sharks and that there were no warnings about it. But many residents called for solutions other than signs, including the director of the Maui Visitors Bureau. Marsha Wienert, executive director of the MVB, said she would have preferred more information in visitor brochures or on visitor information television programming, instead of signs. An MVB staff member said that the MVB itself does not distribute any sort of safety information for visitors. But no amount of safety warnings help when things go wrong, especially in the ocean. In 2000, a French windsurfer’s leg was mauled by an aggressive shark off

Kanaha Beach Park, inflicting permanent leg and foot damage. The Frenchman said he would never windsurf around Maui or other tropical waters again. Near the end of last year, a visiting female windsurfer was rescued off Maui’s south shore after an equipment failure stranded her far from shore. She was rescued the morning after what must have been a terrifying night at sea, afloat on her board. On rare occasions, things can turn not only terrifying, but tragic when Maui visitors fall from grace with the sea. One such incident happened to a California couple honeymooning on Maui in 1999. Manouchehr Monazzami-Taghadomi, a naturalized U.S. citizen, said he and his wife were swept far out to sea by strong winds while kayaking in the afternoon off the Lahaina side of the pali. As darkness and cold from the wind and sea spray engulfed them, the kayak capsized and they clung to the overturned boat, trying to keep warm. After some time, Monazzami heard his wife scream, “Shark!” and he turned around to see his

wife surface, saying, “The shark took my arm.” He managed to get her into the kayak and tried unsuccessfully to stop the bleeding. Forty minutes later she was dead and when another wave overturned the boat, her body was lost. He and the boat washed up on the rocks of Kahoolawe, where he was rescued two days later, distraught, badly bruised, cut and sunburned. He said the company that rented him the kayak gave him no safety warnings whatsoever about wind or sea conditions. Most Maui visitor mishaps have a happier outcome, with those involved relatively unscathed, but wiser, like the windsurfer who was rescued after a night at sea, or boogie boarder Joan Rogers. Safety on Maui, like anywhere, begins and ends with each individual’s own judgment and responsibility. Luck may play a large part, too. Despite fracturing her arm, Joan Rogers knows she was lucky. “Next time, I’ll be more leery, pick out smaller waves,” she said. “The power of that wave, I know I could have easily broken my neck.”

Monster Pipe! O'Brien Tames Giant Pipeline To Win Hansen’s Energy Pro Pipeline local Jamie O'Brien reached the peak of his 19-year-old life today, winning the Hansen's Energy Pro in potentially deadly 15-25 foot waves at Pipeline. 'Energy' was the name of the game and a pre-requisite for survival as the final four rounds of competition were held in some of the most breath-taking, yet life-threatening conditions ever contested at Pipeline. But it was O'Brien's combination of local knowledge and ability to maintain composure and tube-riding form under extreme stress that saw him take the victory. O'Brien earned $7,000 and 750 points towards the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings - a great start to his campaign to qualify for the elite World Championship Tour this year. The 35-minute final was an all-Hawaiian affair, second place going to defending event champion Bruce Irons (Kauai, $3,500), third to Joel Centeio (Haleiwa, $2,500), and fourth to Jamie Sterling (Haleiwa, $2,000). The highest placed non-Hawaiian was Laguna Beach, CA., surfer Mike Todd, who placed third in the semi-finals behind Irons and Centeio for a final position of equal fifth place. The high-

est placed international surfers, making it to the quarter finals, were Damon Harvey (Australia, 9th), and Andrew King (Australia), Josh Fuller (Australia), and Blair Stewart (New Zealand), all equal 13th. Glory came at a price today and no-one escaped Pipeline unscathed. The waves were thrilling to watch but bordered on unrideable at times, as they feathered from way out on the second and third reefs. Every surfer charged and the outcome was either the take-off and tube-ride of a lifetime, or a wipeout that could only be compared to having a three-story building collapse on you. The surfers unanimously agreed that today was one of the heaviest days of surfing ever at the Pipeline. Laguna's Mike Todd put it best: "If there wasn't a contest on, I wouldn't be surfing out there." To his credit, Todd made the drop into some of the scariest and biggest waves of the day - like nothing you would ever see in a lifetime at Laguna. The final was a summary of all that Pipeline was today. There were plenty of cavernous tubes, more than a few giant close-outs, and enough horrific wipeouts to raise the blood pressure and heart rate of every spectator that packed the beach. Jamie Sterling charged into the first wave of the 35-minute final, pushing top gear as he had

done all day. He hurtled vertically down a 20foot face of blue, cranked a turn at the bottom and lifted into a huge barrel that closed out in a wall of whitewater for four points out of 10. The crowd was on their feet as Sterling took set wave after set on his head and ended up near shore. Then came the top exchange of the heat. Bruce Irons stressed out the crowd as he opted for a 10foot wave at Backdoor Pipe (the right-handers). The rights were breaking in less than three feet of water and Bruce had to make it out of the barrel to avoid injury. He disappeared for three seconds then shot out in a mist of spray for a score of 8.5 points. No sooner had Irons emerged than O'Brien came flying down the face of a 12-footer, stalled at the bottom and pulled up into a tube that was as wide as it was high. O'Brien sat deep inside, arms outstretched and exited cleanly for 9.5 points. Centeio made a couple of breath-taking drops but was unable to find the tube-rides. After that each surfer scored major respect but only low scores as they took off on giant set waves of up to 25 feet that either offered little after the take-off or ended in disaster. Irons took off with just 15 seconds to go in a last ditch attempt to overtake O'Brien, but instead hurtled head-first into one of the worst close-out sections of the day. As the wave barreled over him, he appeared to be standing in a huge room that imploded. Somehow he surfaced unhurt. "That was the future right there," said O'Brien after the final. "Everyone in their 20's (O'Brien is 19) and all of us were charging in huge Pipe. This is the best day of my life. This was one of the heaviest days of Pipe and it's been incredible. I don't even know what else to

SURF&SPORTS say. From here, I'm off to Australia and I hope to qualify this year for the World Championship Tour." Jamie Sterling summed it up in one sentence: "I've had so many amazing rides today that in my mind it has just turned into one big barrel." Sterling was one of just three surfers to post perfect 10-point rides today. It was in his semi-final that he dropped into one of the biggest tube-rides of the day and rode deep inside for four seconds before shooting out with white-water that then sent him into a high-speed cartwheel. The other two surfers to post 10's were Marcus Hickman (Haleiwa) in the quarters, and Evan Valiere in round four. Valiere earned special recognition today, posting the highest heat score in that round with 18 points out of 20, and winning a special award for being the surfer who charged the most fearlessly throughout the event. He experienced the best and the worst of Pipeline with a perfect 10, a handful of hideous wipeouts and broken surfboards. More than a dozen surfboards were crushed by the waves today, but incredibly there were no serious injuries. New Zealander Blair Stewart fared the worst in round four, suffering a horrible wipeout on a 15-foot wave that bounced him tailbone first into the reef. He was able to make his way in to the shore where he received medical attention. Unfortunately he had earned enough points to advance to the quarter finals but was unable to return to the water. At last report, Stewart was off to receive X-rays to ensure there was no serious damage. Kainoa McGee (Honolulu) had a neardeath experience in the semi-finals after diving under a huge close-out wave that pinned him underwater for so long he ran out of air. A world-class body-boarder who made his prosurfing debut this week, McGee was awesome

in every round. But the semi's shut him down. "That's the closest I've ever come to death," McGee said. "I dived down under one of those huge sets and it all turned to black. The wave pinned me down and tried several times to get to the surface, then I felt the wave pull my board and drag me under again. I ran out of air and it is just black. I had given up when I finally got to the surface. By then I was way down the beach and it took forever to get out again." In fact, McGee's wipeout was such an ordeal that even though he eventually made it back out, he never managed to post a single score during the heat. Every single surfer's performance was worthy of individual mention today. In the arena of world class professional sport they proved so much: Surfing is a sport that demands incredible athleticism and peak physical conditioning. Professional surfing extends far beyond financial reward and recognition - you would be hard-pressed to find anyone that would paddle out into Pipeline as it was today and takeoff on the biggest sets going for a possible $7,000. Every surfer out there showed that they were willing to pay the ultimate price for the ultimate ride, just for the sake of proving it to themselves. The $50,000 Hansen's Energy Pro is a 3star World Qualifying Series event sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals. It offers critical points towards qualifying for the World Championship Tour, which crowns the world champion of surfing each year. In addition to the surfing competition, Hansen's this week launched a 3,000,000 nationwide can campaign featuring the Hansen's Energy Pro logo and the wording: "Pipeline Hawaii". Hansen’s Beverages, by Hansen Natural Corporation (NASDAQ: HANS) is a 70-year-old California based brand with a reputation for delivering the highest quality beverages. plate, arriving at a total much less than you would think. The restaurant is the brainchild of president and CEO Jon Miyabuchi, who is very appreciative of the customer support he’s received in the last three years and donates back to the community through fundraisers and nonprofit organizations. He has entrusted his child to Executive Chef Todd Winterbottom, a seasoned culinary professional who has been instrumental in the creation of their new pupu menu which ranges from $7.00 to $14.99. The new items include Grilled New York Steak, spicy Korean Chicken Wings, Chicken Nuggets, Mini Egg Rolls, Sashimi, Shrimp Scampi, and the Big Ramen Bowl. These items are a departure from the normal sushi menu in that they are prepared hot and fresh to order and served by their friendly wait staff. I sampled a bit of everything, buying two and three-dollar dishes like there was no tomorrow. The spicy tuna was probably my favorite with a deep, rich flavor. The Go! Roll ran a close second with succulent slices of fresh water eel draped over a Tobiko encrusted California Roll. Who can say no to eel? With over forty different kinds of ridiculously priced sushi, there’s something here for everyone, along with soups, salads, noodles, sake, and dessert. The great thing about this place is how fast you can get in and out. It’s the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat while waiting for your movie to start at the theaters across the way. Kids love it too because they get to watch the sushi go by and pick out their favorite ones. Sushi Go! Restaurant at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center is an innovative look at fast food. They take fresh, quality ingredients, serve it to you as fast as you can stuff it in, and leave your pocketbook smiling at the end. So where are you going to go? Sushi Go!

The reverberating beats of the Watanabe Taiko Drummers rolled through the airy walkways of Queen Ka’ahumanu Center last Tuesday the eighteenth, drawing a crowd of curious onlookers. They performed in front of Sushi Go! Restaurant to help them celebrate three years of successful business and the unveiling of a new pupu menu. I decided I had to stop in and discover for myself the secret of their success. Corporate Sushi Chef Patrick Turner says it’s all because “we’re living up to our commitment of offering incredible sushi and pupus at incredibly inexpensive prices.” He’s not kidding, either. You can get Ahi Mini-Maki, Ika, Lomi Salmon, Natto, Tako, and many other dishes at just $1.75 a plate. The Caterpillar Roll, fresh Ahi Sashimi, Miso Chili Salmon Bowl, and the Go! Roll, among others, constitute the highend dishes here at just $4.00 each. You can’t beat that anywhere. The portions are pupu-sized but the prices allow you to create your own meal according to your particular tastes. A big key to Sushi Go!’s success lies in the innovative way in which the food is presented. The Restaurant is designed around a conveyor belt system, which all seats have access to. Whether you pull up a stool at the wrap-around bar or sit at the tables along the side, the color-coded plates with see-through domes march by you in an endless parade of temptation. WINE OF THE

CLASSIFIEDS

The Hahn Estate winery is owned by Nicolas Hahn and his wife. It is mainly an estate vineyard winery that owns over 1400 acres all in Monterey County. Their new wine maker, Adam Lazarre, and his winemaking staff are teaming up to produce some excellent wines. Adam Lazarre, formerly from Jekel Vineyards, has been around for years and knows how to do things right. Hahn Estate has a wide range of varietals growing, from Viognier to Chardonnay and from Cabernet Franc to Syrah. They also have another wine label that’s popular among strong wine drinkers, by the name of Smith and Hooik Winery. This is the parent winery to Hahn, and is more focused on traditional varietals. The pick for this week is the Hahn Estate Merlot. This Merlot is a fabulous soft, elegant, lady-like wine. With its pronounced cherry and cassis highlights, it has a toasted oak, raspberry jam flavor and finishes with some good tannin structure. This wine is elegant enough to sip on its own or have with some soft cheese and bread. Enjoy!

Whale Mania Maui! Winter brings an excitement to Maui as Humpback Whales once again make their migration to the tranquil waters of Hawaii, blessing us with their magnificent glory and filling all lucky spectators with awe. Whale Mania Maui is a project of the Soroptimist International of West Maui organization that incorporates the beauty of whale season into art via local artists’ interpretive sculptures. Whale Mania Maui is the Pacific extension of the Animals on Parade global art movement, with 30 artistically embellished humpback whale sculptures on display across the island. In conjunction with Soroptomist International of West Maui, each Whale has its own sponsor who are individuals or businesses. Once the Whales are sold at auction, half the net proceeds will be given to the charity of the sponsor's choice. The other half will be given to local Maui charities for the benefit of children, art, education and environmental organizations. In the late fall and winter the Whales are displayed all over the island so everyone on Maui can enjoy them. Then in March, the Whales will be auctioned off at a gala celebration open to all. The public is invited to bid on these unique one-of-a-kind works of art over the internet or attend the Whale Mania Maui Grand Auction, slated to take place at the Maui Tropical Plantation on Saturday, March 15, where all the whales will be located beginning March 6. The Soroptimist International of West Maui, which is the local chapter of a global organization formed by a group of business women in an effort to provide volunteer service to their community, are now accepting internet bids for Whale Mania Maui at <publicartnetwork.com>. Tickets for the auction are $75, including pupus, open bar and entertainment. Auction proceeds benefit local charities. For tickets, call 665-1597.

GO JIMMY GO 9pm Saturday, at Maui Brews. With special guests Pimpbot, and radio DJ Fernando "The Love Machine", to kick open the night. Go Jimmy Go’s passionate blend of American Classic Soul and old Jamaican Ska and Reggae bring groove worshippers to their feet and onto the dance floor. You’re silly if you missed it last time - these guys are pros and put on a damn good performance. Don’t shortchange yourselves by ignoring the skills of Oahu’s most popular band. They earned it.

GOMEGA GO 8:30pm Friday, at DeanO’s. It’s Gomega’s CD Release Party, featuring No Na’me, Desmond D, Hev B Wyld, Demune, Crowd, Absence of Void, and Khrinj. Yeah, DeanO’s!

IN LOVE WITH MOTOWN 5 & 7:30pm Friday, at the Castle Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center. This film is SO good, and the people of Maui Film Festival (including the viewers - Hello!) so Smart, that “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” is being brought back for an encore presentation this very weekend. Can I get a witness?! Oh! This movie made me laugh, cry, dance, fall in love with Ben Harper all over again, hate myself for my obvious ignorance at not recognizing the power and greatness of the people before me - it’s just a complete package of soul creation and you must love it too.

M & M - REVISITIED Marty Dread: every Monday night at Maui Brews. Wow! What a fun show! Great reggae Marty absolutely rah-cks it. Alert to all males: this is where all the girls go on Monday, apparently. Not everywhere on Maui is a sausage fest. Mulligan’s Open Mic (i.e. Give New Bands a Chance) Night w/Whiteboy Johnny, 9pm Tuesdays. Kihei can be quite the spot for whooping it up on a random Tuesday, lemme tell ya, and Mulligan’s is a cool pub.

No "Animal House" Not Enough Booty In The Pants ) Old School ( Apart from a few moments of sidesplitting devastating comedy, "Old School" is an "Animal House" (1978) knockoff that achieves little of its famous predecessor's infectious momentum. "Old School" director and co-screenwriter Todd Phillips ("Road Trip") is prominent for his Sundance prize-winning documentary "Frat House," and stays close to home territory by working with producer Ivan Reitman (producer on "Animal House," director on "Ghostbusters" 1 & 2). But this promising team misses the mark on reclaiming a lowbrow genre that seems an easy target for outrageous humor. Mitch (Luke Wilson - "The Royal Tenenbaums") is a straight-laced real estate attorney who comes home unexpectedly early from a business trip to find his girlfriend Heidi (Juliette Lewis) in the midst of a multi-partner sexcapade. Our egg-faced straight man immediately moves into a house neighboring his alma mater Harrison University to regain emotional perspective before playing groomsman for his friend Frank (Will Ferrell "Zoolander"). Fellow groomsman Beanie (Vince Vaughn - "Swingers") makes Frank's wedding comical by trying right up to the last second to audibly dissuade Frank from tying the knot. While Frank attempts to settle into marital bliss with Marissa (Perrey Reeves), Beanie convinces Mitch to throw a big house party - "Mitchapalooza." As owner of a stereo store, Mitch outfits the house with a giant sound system and brings in Snoop Dogg with Warren G and Archbishop Don Magic Juan to entertain the crowd. Frank makes a fateful decision to revisit his old friend the "beer bong" and soon reverts to his college persona of "Frank the Tank" by running naked from the party down a main street where Marissa and her friends hap-

pen to be driving and save him from certain arrest. The party signals curtains for Frank's new marriage and attracts the attention of Harrison University's Dean Pritchard (Jeremy Piven - "Very Bad Things") who, remembering the ways he was demeaned by his former classmates, informs the guys that the house is on campus property and must be vacated in a week. Beanie instinctively comes up with an idea to align the house with the college by turning it into a "fraternity of nonexclusive brotherhood." This

makes room for a motley group of pledges that include an enormously fat black dude and an 80-year-old bearded white man named "Blue." The funniest scene in the movie involves the group of pledges standing on a high wall each with a 30-pound cinder block tied to a long piece of cord attached at the other end to their genitalia. The pledges have to trust that their leaders have tied an appropriately long piece of cord so that the cinder block will hit the ground with slack to spare. It's the one moment in the movie that produces a sustained howl from the audience. Will Ferrell's Frank steals "Old School" by default because the script loses sight of Mitch as the story's put-upon protagonist and Beanie as the churlish voice of demented reason. We never get to see Beanie and Mitch fully embrace their inner frat boy and reveal their ids the way Frank does. Mitch fosters a low-level romance

with former classmate Nicole (Ellen Pompeo "Moonlight Mile") but seems just as selfrepressed at the end of the movie as he was with Heidi. Beanie gets overshadowed a third into the movie and is all but lost by the time Frank says his final goodbye to Marissa. There's something sad about older guys trying to reclaim their youth by inventing a fraternity where they can get wasted and wave their masculinity like a surrendering white flag. That underlying melancholy never gets a proper thumping in "Old School." The main characters in "Old School" are said to be "30-years-old, but we know damn well that they're coming closer to 40. Perhaps if Tom Green ("Road Trip") had been given the role of Mitch, he would've poured enough hot wax of burning male brevity on the comedy to give it an embossed stamp of finality. Where's Tom Green when you need him?

It has the quality to entrance you through a first viewing and compel you to take its themes and characters home with you. "Beautiful (sometimes sublimely so), daring (sometimes outrageously so), seriously crazed and terrifically funny" (Wall Street Journal). "You can't get it out of your heart" (Elvis Mitchell, New York Times). Starring Javier Cámara, Darío Grandinetti, Leonor Watling, Rosario Flores, Mariola Fuentes, Geraldine Chaplin, Pina Bausch, and Malou Airaudo. In Spanish with English subtitles. Rated R. 116 min. DIFFICULTLISTENING

BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE

NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT!

FROM BUBBLEGUM TO SKY: ME & AMY & THE TWO FRENCH BOYS

DAEDELUS: THE HOUSEHOLD EP (Eastern Developments Music, www.easterndevelopments.com) A fun EP of mostly instrumental tracks from the man behind the music on the Busdriver/Radioinactive: Weather album that we reviewed a few weeks ago. A good mix of beat boxing, playful distortions and light drum n' bass mixed up in a rather happy sort of way, all making for a nice, uplifting ride. Only five tracks and a Prefuse 73 remix, but well worth your time. [Tang Li Wheebs] This guy makes really cool, different music. The melodies are extremely pretty and happy, backed by punchy breakbeat drum patterns. It sounds like music that cartoon animals would rap over. What's especially cool about this EP is that it's so packed full of different sounds; the music is constantly changing. It gets my thumbs up. [The Mole] Trying to keep up with everything lately has been a bit chaotic but rewarding. We had two rad shows this past week, the first being the Mark Motherbaugh art show opening at Hapa's on Thursday night. Despite a few technical problems with the sound system, all went rather well. If you weren't present, you missed the Maui debut of the new Puritan line-up, the Mole's Adult Vampire Baby mini-epic, and tons of other nifty acts that mashed it up. The performance on Saturday, at the Paia Youth Cente, was a cool daytime wrap party for the art show, where Hinterlander, The Mole, and Puritan shared the stage with Kanekoa and Udecide for a cozy afternoon of beach-fringed sound. A big thank you goes out to all of you that made it to either of the shows and showed your support! Secondly we here at the Difficult Listening headquarters have been in the middle of a graphic design tornado, but have emerged with some spiffy new t-shirts and buttons. Yes, you can now get a Tang Li Wheebs or Mole t-shirt and buttons to let all your neighbors and co-workers know how much you love us. Visit snailonastick.com or motionrecordings.com for pictures and more info. Make our day. Love, Tang Li Wheebs You may have wondered why my t-shirt design includes the "Maui's Most Hated" slogan. Well it's because I really may be Maui's most hated. I think that this is unfortunate. I don't want people to hate me, but the fact is, there are quite a few hip hop guys on this island that would like to kick my ass or at least beat me in an MC battle. I believe that I've provoked these feelings of resentment by a combination of actions that I've taken, none of which I can apologize for. There are a number of misunderstandings responsible for these controversies. I wish that people could get their facts straight before they start dragging my name through the dirt. And I wish that people could address me when they have a problem with me instead of addressing everyone else. My phone number is 573-0210 if anyone would like to talk. And by the way, it's a complete lie that I ever said that I'm the only underground MC on Maui. My goals have always included building a strong community of independent artists. I wish that we could set aside our differences in musical taste, etc. and work together. And while I'm on the subject, I'd like to mention that I'd be happy to donate one beat to any Maui artist that would like to use it in a song - just cause I'd like to build some bonds, plus the promotion can't hurt me. And now I'll step off my soapbox - thank you for your attention. Love, The Mole Send music to be reviewed to: Mole & Wheebs; 34 Ai St; Makawao, HI 96768. The Mole is sad that everyone hates him and is the owner of Motion Recordings (www.motionrecordings.com).

(Eenie Meenie Records, www.eeniemeenie.com) Sharp, catchy, and fun are all good words to describe Mario Hernandez's one-man pop music adventure. Great vocals, dandy songs and a good time all come with the first spin of this disc. At times reminding me of The Three O'clock or maybe an Elephant 6 pop concoction like the Apples In Stereo, this album draws on popular music's rich past to make a dreamy, satisfying modern record. Each song on the album easily has the potential to get stuck in your head and stay with you all day as you go about your normal routine. So get a copy, fall in love and daydream the hours away with a smile. [Tang Li Wheebs] This kind of music makes me cringe. Please never play this again, Tang Li. [The Mole] Ignore The Mole. ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON

DETACH ME IF YOU CAN I am so confused! I broke up with my girlfriend of two months just this weekend, and I miss her so much. I was feeling stifled because I missed the freedom of being single -- like sitting around the house in my boxers drinking a Bud and watching TV. Sounds lame, I know, but that's what we guys enjoy. She found it disturbing for me to want to go home and have a beer or two by myself. It got to the point where I had trouble going to sleep when she was staying over, which was almost every night. At first, it seemed we had a lot in common, but I later learned that we have a lot not in common, like what time we go to sleep, and the people we choose as friends (she doesn't like mine and I don't like hers). Well, now I have all the time I want to sit on the couch and watch TV, but I miss her and all our good talks and games of Scrabble. I also worry about how she's doing. She doesn't have much money, and she's struggling to finish college while working. I wonder if I just added more stress to her life -- stress that might cause her to crash. Flying So Low People confuse love with surgical reattachment. Like love, surgical reattachment is a wonderful thing, especially if you're someone who got a little too frisky with the Skil saw over the weekend. But, once your thumb (and we do hope it was your thumb) is sewn back on, it's unlikely to sulk, throw tantrums, or go on strike from opening soda cans because it longs to be (whee!) "free!" again. And there lies the essential fork in the road between reattachment and relationships. That's a fork you never see in the chick flicks. Chick flicks generally end with two people pledging to spend the rest of their lives together. Well, guess what? This isn't supposed to mean EVERY FREAKIN' MOMENT. Some might call that love -- that is, until they break down and start calling around for a surgeon who operates on the conjoined. Eternal togetherness -- for those whose projected eternity span extends beyond a 15-second makeout session with Sandra Bullock or Hugh Grant, followed by a fade-to-black -- is a tricky thing. The people who manage it best are those who crumple up the fantasy approach to love -- "Just sit here and stare into my eyes until we become wrinkled and dead!" -- and instead give each other time alone to be boring, stupid, and gross. Sometimes this leads to intricate nasal excavations or to the creation of tiny sculptures from toenail clippings. Sometimes this leads to the Great American Novel. And sometimes a guy just needs an hour or two to sit around the house in his boxers drinking a Bud. These same people are smart about space issues, too...as in, they issue their partners plenty of space, including space to stock up on (and hang out separately with) friends the other partner loathes. Space for one partner to go to bed at 3 a.m., and the other, when 3-year-olds do. These people understand something you and your girlfriend don't – that successful separateness is a huge part of successful togetherness. Note: It might be a good time to explain this concept to your girlfriend -- that you aren't looking to sit alone on the couch with your (reattached?) thumb up your nose because you don't want to be with her, but because you do.

CLASSIFIED

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: You'll feel like you have more freedom to love. Being with friends and enjoying life is your style. Add your smile to the scenery. Much of this time of year deals with you letting go. The new moon facilitates spiritual activity and cosmic connections. TAURUS: It's time to be as open-minded as possible. Society is asking you to think outside the box. People around you may have the answers you need. Being friendly won't hurt you. Try and keep your feet on the ground during Mardi Gras celebrations. GEMINI: Keeping a clear head at work will be one of your main priorities. You're responsible for communiqués at the workplace this week. Take the information slowly and ask a lot of questions. The new moon allows you to show off your talents. CANCER: The travel bug may have bitten you. Seeking an exotic destiny has never been a problem for you. Find a place where you can have some of the comforts of home, yet with enough differences to make it an exciting challenge. The new moon teaches you philosophy. LEO: You're moving across the earth as if you were the last of the red-hot lovers. Lust just keeps on getting lustier. The new moon adds the spice that makes magnetic psychic attraction more than just a possibility. Have a good time but know that danger often wears a pretty face. VIRGO: Be as relaxed and kind as you can stand. The sweetness of life presents itself through friends and relationships. The new moon presents another chance at making peace and creating harmony. Find your best qualities and emphasize them. LIBRA: Last month’s partying is currently taking its toll. Your organizational skills are quite high during this time. Taking health supplements and getting more sleep may be to your benefit. The new moon brings charitable causes as well as personal health issues to your attention. SCORPIO: Express yourself through any creative medium that's at your disposal. Your memory is needed in reference to historical events. The new moon makes you more playful and more willing to accept love. Transportation issues may be of concern. SAGITTARIUS: Stay home and have fun. Call on others who have traveled abroad to share their photos, slides, and videos at your place. The new moon sparks memories, imagination and intuition. You'll see how you are alike and opposite of your parents. CAPRICORN: Making the rounds is to your advantage this week. Revisit the sites that have turned you on the most. Make friends with someone that provides you a service. The new moon prompts you to get involved locally and to ask for what you want. AQUARIUS: You should be feeling sexier than usual this week. Even Aquarians occasionally need a good massage, a nice hug, or an Adam and Eve sort of experience. The new moon questions your values and helps you see what's really important to you. PISCES: Enjoy the center stage of the universal dance of life. The things that you are passionate about should be flourishing. Get your game on and celebrate your life. The new moon in Pisces will give you a sense of adventure and renewal.
