LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR JESUS IS NOT VIOLENT Good grief! Letters saying Jesus supports war and that to challenge a politician is both unpatriotic and shows you hate freedom! Calm down, folks. Bush the Junior is not calling forth the Second Coming, he just wants to recreate the Roman Empire. Jesus was pretty clear on violence: "Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone." Enough said. Maybe when George disarms, he will have the moral right to demand it of others. The essence of our democracy is to speak up in defense of life, liberty and justice for all. It is courageously patriotic to do so in the face of tyrannical attempts to squash rights, stifle freedom and intimidate dissent- attempts like the Patriot Act and conservative control of the press. We are right to be disappointed with the cowardly, indecisive politicians who accepted this, and who gave George a blank check to send our kids off to kill and die in a country that has already suffered too much for too long from our politicians. Given the quality of evidence presented against Iraq, it makes as much sense to bomb flight schools in the USA for training Al Qaeda terrorists. It is politicians and ill-considered wars of conquest that are being opposed- not the country, not the constitution or the principles our ancestors and elders fought to guarantee. No matter how George wraps himself
in flags, he is still nothing more than a politician. In the opinion of many, perhaps a majority, he is a corrupt and improperly installed president who is running up massive public debts while giving away our resources for peanuts to powerful corporations that put him in place with choke money and because they mostly control the TV, radio and newspapers. Truth is powerful. Since the mass media and schools are afraid to do it, it is up to you to educate yourself and your neighbors. Be patriotic for our democracy, and remember, Jesus would never hurt anybody. -Daniel Grantham, Haiku
DIFFICULT, INDEED! What the hell is up with your "Difficult Listening" column?! Before you ask, "Did he actually check out some of the music? I did, and it was indeed "difficult." The reviews are abstract and bewildering at best. Tang Li Wheebs describes one band’s sound as "a smorgasbord of sounds and words all mixed up into a chaotic yet musical album." The Mole writes about "ambient tones and glitchy meanerings" - what the fuck?! Most of this obscure crap sounds like rainforest bird samples over a Tahitian drum circle with distorted mandolin solos! My musical tastes are both tolerant and diverse and the only thing keeping this out of the "EH BRAH" section is I don't want to be anonymous. For real bands, check out Puya, Refused, and Entombed!

STATE SHORTCHANGES MAUI Maui, give yourself a pat on the back. You guys are great! Each county has its own glass-recycling program. Based on data from July 1 through Dec. 31, Mauians recycled almost twice as much glass per person as any other county. We average almost three pounds per month per person. The Big Island is a distant second at a little over one and a half pounds. By the way, three pounds is about a six-pack. I know we can do even better. The workings of government are somewhat curious at best. Do you know that even though we do the best glass-recycling job in the state, we are paid the smallest amount of money per ton? If my recycling business were located on the Big Island, I would receive nearly twice the per-ton payment as I receive on Maui! Your glass-recycling program is paid for by the state. The state collects an advanced disposal fee from glass importers and passes the money along to the counties. The problem is the distribution mechanism. It is based on de facto population (i.e. residents plus visitors) and not on performance. That procedure needs to change. -Thomas D. Reed, president, Aloha Glass Recycling
CRUISE SHIP HUMAN WASTE A few weeks ago, the Maui News published a let-
ter from the owner of Trilogy Cruises, saying that one of their boats had encountered a large sheet of human waste in the water off the pristine North shore of Lana'i. Tourists do not come to Maui to swim or snorkel or surf or fish in human waste. The legislature is considering a bill that would prevent this dumping by cruise ships. It has to pass 3 hurdles. On Monday 2/3 it passed the first hurdle, when committees passed it out. The second hurdle is a committee chaired by Joe Souki of Maui. Last year Joe killed a similar bill by refusing to pass it out of committee. This year he has expressed the intention to do the same. Please email or call or write Rep. Souki and tell him that this bill is far too important for him to bury single-handedly. His email is repsouki@Capitol.hawaii.gov, his fax number is 808586-9499, and his snail mail address is: 415 South Beretania Street, Room 433, Honolulu, HI 96813. Or just call his office at 808-5869444. It’s toll free from Maui: 984-2400 + 69444 followed by the pound sign. Please help get this bill through Joe Souki's committee. -Sally Raisbeck, Wailuku Send your letters to the editor via email (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 658 Front Street, Ste. 126A-7278, Lahaina, HI 96761) or fax (808-661-0446). OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON
WHO'S YOUR DADDY? Let me see if I have this right: President Bush keeps saying he doesn't need U.N. support and that the U.S. can act alone if necessary and yet he keeps trying to convince the U.N. that he's doing the right thing so they'll vote in his favor. Which one is it? Do we need international support or not? Telling the world one thing while doing another can only help to undermine our cause. If Bush keeps thrusting his chest out in a defiant manner all the while waiting for U.N. approval, sooner or later someone's going to call his bluff. It all comes down to posturing. So what we have is our president sitting in front of the world telling everyone that he can do what he wants when he wants, but he not-so-secretly knows that if he acts on his own and things don't quite work out, he's going to be in some serious trouble. It's this melodramatic, back and forth posturing by Bush and his detractors in the U.N., namely France and Germany, that has the world on edge. War is not something to push back and forth just because one side doesn't want to give up the reins of control. That fosters the thought that maybe the U.S. is not as committed as it needs to be when people's lives are at stake. If we're going to go, we have to GO. What is increasingly hard to understand is why people are actually against the U.S. effort. Nobody denies that Hussein is a legitimate danger, and yet everyone wants to scamper around and wait for him to just go away. The thing is, nobody who supports this war wants
another Vietnam. Nobody wants to see our servicemen get killed. Nobody is under the impression that war is pretty and fun. But the fear of past mistakes and the fear of committing our troops to doing something dangerous is not reason enough to let a man like Hussein live on. Just because we have freedoms that many people in the world cannot even fathom doesn't mean we should hoard them like possessive children. Nobody gave us these freedoms. We had to fight for them. And right now, there is a man who has his country so petrified through the continued use of torture and intimidation that they couldn't fight their way to freedom if Saddam was put in a wheelchair and rolled downhill with no brakes. Is Bush pushing for war? Yes he is, but it's because there are people in another part of the world that are in serious need of help and we're the only ones brave enough to step in. But we're wasting our time with negotiations. People are watching this rhetoric and they're beginning to forget the real scope of the mission and that's to remove a dangerous dictator. If our allies around the world begin to think that Bush is just trying to prove he is the king of his castle the way a guy tries to convince his buddies, they'll begin to question our intentions. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day who was a special ops soldier in Vietnam. He has seen the dangers of war and I take his opinion on the subject seriously. So I asked him what he thought about this matter and he looked at me and said one thing: "I would rather pre-empt them than have them pre-empt us. The thing is, they've already proven they're not afraid, now we just have to do the same."

mauitime@mauitime.com Hey you... [dive shop] boat captain, Yeah, you know who I’m talking about. You’re a punk-ass disrespectful boat driver. You’re so ignorant that you sped right up to a pod of whales full blast, not only ignoring the laws against approaching whales, but most importantly, you disregarded human life. By ignoring the “diver down” flag, which you also blatantly sped by within a few feet of, you could have killed someone! Flatulence, gas, farts, blowing ass, SBD (silent but deadly), etc. Whatever you want to call them, they stink! Yes, everyone gets gas. Loud ones, medium ones, pops, and SBD’s can occur at any time. There are several products out on the market that can prevent gas. But, have you ever heard of a product that actually gets rid of the smell as soon as it seeps out of your butt? The Flatulence Deodorizer (Flat-D) guarantees that it will eliminate gas on the spot. Since I am an up and coming reporter, I decided to try the Flat-D to see if it really eliminates the horrid smell that shoots out of my ass. Taking on this project gave me anxiety at first. I am honestly going to tell the people of Maui how my butt functions when I eat gassy food! The anxiety has subsided and I am ready to tell you about my gas. The Flat-D is a lightweight, thin pad that is shaped like a light bulb. With the use of a double-sided, thin piece of tape, the Flat-D is taped to the inside of panties or briefs. I don’t wear panties; I wear gstrings or thongs. But I had to wear fullback granny panties for this project (yuck). Here is my Flat-D diary:
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2003 I went to Taco Bell and ate two steak tacos, beans and rice. Nothing can get my ass going better than Mexican food. As I was getting ready to go out for the evening, I winced as I put my legs through the full-back panties. The tape and the Flat-D were lightly attached to my panties. I pulled them up and I was surprised that I couldn’t even feel

Man’s relentless persuit of a Flatulence Deodorizer is finally over
the Flat-D pressed against my buttocks. Once at the Hard Rock Café, I felt a rumble in my tummy and I pushed out an explosive fart. Thank goodness there was a band playing because if someone had heard that fart I could have blown an eardrum out. All night, I tooted, popped, and ripped gas. I didn’t smell anything. Was the FlatD working or were my farts not stinking? Who cared?! At least I wasn’t clearing out the place! When I came home I took the Flat-D off, and I know this is gross, but I sniffed it. It didn’t even smell bad. The next day, I threw it in the wash and it was good to go for the next time I went out.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2003 Compadres hosts Taco Tuesday, where patrons can purchase $1 tacos and $2 beers and margaritas. By eating three tacos, I knew that I would be blowing it up within the hour. And of course, I was right. Loud farts were coming out, vibrating my chair. Then, I remembered that I didn’t have the Flat-D on. Before the evening went on, I put it on and I continued to secrete disgusting gas all night long. Once again, I didn’t notice any smell and neither did anyone around me. Two evenings went by and not a hint of
smelly gas. Inventors Brian and Myra Conant, of Mililani, HI, patented the device making it the first and only flatulence device on the market. It was made to eliminate gas odors and odors related with menstrual cycles. The Flat-D was originally used by the British Chemical Defense Establishment to protect its soldiers against nerve gas and other toxic gas related to chemical warfare. The Flat-D is 100% activated charcoal. It is very flexible, absorbs odors more effectively, and is recommended by Dr. Rae Seitz M.D. Target customers include consumers with various medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and diabetes. Vegetarians, people in the training industry, sales and business people also could find the Flat-D useful. Other products that are available include the Flat-D Chair Pad, the disposable Flat-D, De-odorizing Flat-D and extra tape. There are some problems of the Flat-D that I can’t really deal with. First of all, I wear thong underwear. The cloth is too big to wear with my thongs. I can’t wear granny panties every night I eat gassy foods. Secondly, the Flat-D doesn’t mask the sound of farts. Most of my gas is so loud that I could use it as an alarm clock every morning. Thirdly, in a moment of passion, you can’t rip your clothes off and let your panties or briefs fall to the floor and fall asleep afterward. You would have to wake up and rip the cloth off and hide it in your purse. Would I recommend this product to people? Yes and no. It’s not for young adults. It’s a product that is for men who wear briefs and women who wear granny panties. It did eliminate that smell from my ass, but I can’t wear granny panties all the time! To get your own Flat-D, contact the toll free customer service number, 1-866-3540056 or visit the web site at <www.flatd.com>

Some recent accidental self-shootings: Jason Gins, 19, Baton Rouge, La., January, in the genitals (gun stuffed in waistband during getaway from robbery); Michael Bent, 30, New York City, September, hit an artery near the groin (fatal) (fooling with gun in car while talking to his girlfriend); Randal Lewis, 40, near St. Louis, September, in the head (fatal) (while demonstrating to 12-year-old son how to unload gun); Robert E. Slay Jr., 55, Gonzalez, La., October, leg (trying on pants at an outlet store); Dr. Steve Kyplesky, 57, Raceland, La., hand (fumbling with gun in his truck's glove compartment); Dale B. Grimmett, 41, Ione, Wash., shoulder (pointed rifle at himself while cleaning it); 15-yearold high school student, Detroit, December, leg (bent over to pick up pencil in class).
SOMETHING ELSE TO WORRY ABOUT In December, Robert John Cusack, 45, was sentenced to 57 days in jail for a June smuggling caper on a flight to Los Angeles. He had four endangered songbirds and 50 illegal orchids in his luggage, and when one bird flew off down an airport corridor during an inspection, the agent asked if Cusack had anything else. "Yes," he said. "I've got monkeys in my pants" (actually, two endangered pygmy monkeys from Thailand, which Cusack dug down for and handed over).

YEAH? WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? In February, the lawyer for former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke (who is to be sentenced in March for defrauding financial contributors in order to feed his gambling habit) appealed to the judge to send Duke to an upscale prison because otherwise black inmates would tear him up. And Kenneth Hawthorn, a Jehovah's Witness proselytizer, filed a lawsuit in Adelaide, Australia, against a couple whose ram attacked him, battering him to the ground, as he approached the couple's door. (The parties settled the lawsuit in January.) (Bonus detail: The ram, since deceased, was named Shit for Brains.)
WORLD'S GREATEST LAWYER In Holmes County, Miss., in October, Mr. Chocwe Lumumba, Esq., earned an acquittal for his client, former policeman Eddie Myers, having convinced the jury that it was self-defense when Myers killed his sister-in-law (who was the assistant police chief). Myers told the jury that, yes, he grabbed two .40-caliber handguns and fired 36 shots, hitting the woman 14 times, and yes, the victim's own handgun was found by emergency workers still strapped inside its holster, but it was still self-defense.
UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Boston City Councilman Felix Arroyo, who opposes war in Iraq, announced in January that he was going on a hunger strike to protest U.S. policy. Arroyo said he would begin a liquid-only regimen, but then limited that to daylight hours (thus allowing himself dinner and, theoretically, breakfast), and later qualified that to mean that he would only adhere to this hardship diet on the second and fourth Fridays of each month.
READERS' CHOICE The Philippine Star reported that George Mamaril, perhaps overreacting to his wife, Evelyn's, suspicion of infidelity, severed his penis on Feb. 22, wrapped it in newspaper, and tossed it through the window of her parents' house, where she was staying, with a note reading (in Filipino), "So you will not suspect I am courting another girl."
PEOPLE WORSE OFF THAN MICHAEL JACKSON
ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ...
Police in Lowell, Mass., said in January that dozens of young Asian women had purchased sloppy breast augmentations, nose jobs and eyelid surgeries from a Cambodian couple posing as doctors in a bloody "Frankenstein's workshop." And a Venezuelan couple were sentenced to from two to seven years in prison by a New York City court in December for injecting a rooster-comb derivative into the faces of 20 women as cut-rate wrinkle-smoothers but which scarred them for life. And authorities in Guadalajara, Mexico, arrested fake "Dr." Myriam Yukie Gaona (a for-

And Daniel Torres was convicted of killing a man (and his pet cockatoo) after prosecutors showed that Torres' DNA was found in the cockatoo's beak because the bird had pecked Torres furiously to defend itself (Dallas). And a highly lauded Vermont sex-crime investigation unit, staggered by government budget cuts, announced it would turn to raffle tickets and bake sales to keep the office going (St. Albans, Vt.).
SURF&SPORTS
BY SARA ARTMAN
The future professionals emerging full force from the surf scene of Maui are turning heads with the style and skills they possess, as they shred local spots island wide. Sporting great displays of talent, acquired from countless sessions at their favorite breaks and immense amounts of time spent in the ocean, the future professionals of this great sport are coming up fast. The spotlight on the rising talent from Maui is focused on a young surfer, Luke Walsh, whose talents cannot be ignored. Luke’s performances at the contests this year have been well received, shown by his winning streak in the Jr. Men and Open Men’s divisions. Life began for Luke Walsh far away from this little island home where his surfing career started. Having lived in Rhode Island until his family moved to Maui when he was 8, he was about as far away as it gets while still living in this country. The young athlete participated in the typical sports - soccer and baseball - before surfing encompassed all of his free time, when he is not studying to maintain his excellent GPA as a senior at King Kekaulike High

School. Living with his family - mom and dad, Peter and Kitty Walsh, older brother Ian Walsh, and younger brothers, Shaun and DK Walsh, in Kuau since moving to Maui, Luke has created an instant relationship with the ocean, being literally in his backyard. Peter Walsh, Luke’s dad, had quite a history with surfing as well. Being an avid surfer himself in Rhode Island, he has provided a strong motivating force and taught his children all about the sport of surfing. The aptitude displayed by Luke Walsh while surfing is incredible, his style commands the attention of anyone around to witness the capabilities of one of the future professionals of surfing, and as Luke puts it, “I try my best at everything!” The push to be an excellent athlete is caused by his own love for the sport and natural competition from his family with three brothers, Ian, Shaun and DK. Matt Kinoshita, who has coached Luke, is another influence on Luke’s budding talent, by incorporating his own immense experiences surfing in order to accelerate Luke’s progress. As much as anyone else can inspire you, surfing is a very individualized sport, person+board+waves=surfing. Merging experience with the natural talent and ambition takes the sport to new levels, where it is a profession, which is what Luke Walsh is beginning to do. The youth of today have a million and one choices and opportunities ahead of them for the future. Between college degrees of any kind, traveling the world or excelling in sports, just to name a few, the possibilities are limitless. The world today is geared for success, so whatever one may choose to excel in, being the most successful while maintaining happiness are key factors. Luke Walsh is very well rounded for the young age of 17, being an immensely skilled surfer, while maintaining above par grades and remaining goal oriented. He exemplifies the professionalism in young surfers today and is a positive role model for the young people and anyone worldwide. Luke Walsh has his standards set high for the future, made apparent by the hard work he invests in everything he does. He also seems really happy and excited with the course of his life, which is more important than anything. Luke Walsh exemplifies how having goals and working hard to attain what you want is possible. The contests for 2002/03 have proved well for Luke, placing high ranks in the finals, a true testament to the obvious devotion of time and talent upheld by the young surfer. Ending 2002 with the Hi –Tech Lopez Ezekiel Surf Bash, Luke placed 1st in the Jr. Men division and 4th in the Open Men division. Beginning the year

Recently the Honolua Legends of the Bay contest was held, Luke swept away 1st place in both Jr. Men and the Open Men HASA divisions for this contest proving once more the success emerging from the young surfer is just beginning. His sponsors, Ezekiel, Kazuma, Globe, Hi-Tech and Da Kine, all agree that this young surfer is well on his way to anywhere he wants to go. Luke Walsh is one of the very talented youths beginning his career from this beautiful little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, as he is proving himself to be one upand-coming surfer to keep an eye on. His future agenda includes doing well in high school, traveling the world loaded with coast lines and outer reefs just asking to be ripped up, and making a career of surfing. Luke’s accomplishments thus far are a true testament that hard work and talent can take

5 What’s Planning Director Mike Foley Shooting For? W
story by Don Gronning 10

hen former Maui Tomorrow board member
Mike Foley, 60, was appointed Planning Director, the building industry started to worry and environmentalists cheered. With Foley's appointment, Mayor Alan Arakawa made it clear land use planning in Maui County is about to change. Nobody seriously questioned Foley's credentials. A former Californian, Foley has a master’s degree in community planning from Antioch University, an undergraduate degree in urban geography from Fresno State University and 35 years experience as a planner. In that time he has worked as a planner in Davis, Napa and Sausalito, California, as well as in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and Wellington, New Zealand. It was his Maui Tomorrow connection that made builders nervous. Maui Tomorrow is a grassroots organization that has been active in opposing the runaway growth that is happening on Maui. Until his appointment, Foley was a Maui Tomorrow board member. Many in the building industry fear a dramatic slowdown in the number of new construction projects approved on Maui, with a decline in the number of well paying construction jobs these projects produce. Maui Tomorrow has been a thorn in the side of developers who 10 years ago faced little effective opposition to their projects, especially at official levels. That changed with the upset election of Alan Arakawa as mayor. He appointed Foley and one of Foley's first actions was to pull three critical permits granted in the final days of the previous administration. That will likely produce lawsuits against the county, but the county also faced lawsuits if the projects went forward, Foley says. He rescinded Special Management Area shoreline exemptions that were granted for two single family residence projects at Palauea Bay December 30-31. The exemptions would
have permitted two residences to be built without being subject to public review. Another SMA minor permit for an eight-lot subdivision at Maliko Point was revoked and Foley said the developer, not the county, would have to seek a change in the community plan for Pu'u Kahana, a 33-lot subdivision. The SMA exemptions were granted in late December, days before the Arakawa administration took office and were withdrawn mainly because of conflicts with community plans, Foley says. Foley says that developers and their representatives put pressure on planning staff to approve the permits before the Arakawa administration took office. That resulted in permits being wrongly issued. The property owners are caught in the middle, he says, but their consultants gave them bad advice. "It's unfortunate they were led to believe their projects were in conformance with county regulations when they aren't," says Foley. "I think people make mistakes when they're pressured in haste to make decisions. I think that's what happened in December." Martin Luna is an attorney who represents Charles and Nell Sweeney, one of the applicants who had their SMA exemption pulled by Foley. Luna says the county had plenty of time to decide on the merits of the applications, especially the proposed Sweeney residence at Palauea Bay. He says they started their application in September 2001. Luna says Foley's direction of the Planning Department is a change from John Min, the previous director. "I'm not sure about agendas," says Luna. He says pulling the SMA exemption hasn't been done before. He worries about the effect of the new direction in the Planning Department on peoples' jobs, as well as the future projects. One of the main problems, as Luna sees it, is the conflict between community plans and zoning. The community plan may call for a particular area to be set aside for park or open space, while the zoning permits other uses, such as for a hotel. "There is no consistency between them," says Luna. The solution, he says, is to have the Maui County Council make the community plans and zoning consistent, so a landowner can know just what he can build on it. These contradictions were resolved on a case-by-case basis before Foley took control of the Planning Department. To many, it appeared that decisions depended on how persuasive your attorney was in getting exemptions to various rules. Foley says things will be different now. "I think previously there was a lot more flexibility and it was more unpredictable," he says. "We're trying to make the development process more predictable for everyone, so that developers have an easier time figuring out where and when development is recommended and what type of development, instead of so much of it being on a case-by-case basis." Foley says his staff is putting policies and procedures in writing so the public and the staff have a written document that describes the way applications are going to be processed, and what the department's policy is on different types of development. The hope is that a
more predictable process will result. Builders want predictability too, says Doyle Betsill, president of the Maui Contractors Association (MCA). But the change in direction under Foley has many of their members worried. "We would like to have some clear parameters about where we're going," says Betsill. Take the pulling of the SMA exemptions. "Is it a trend or isolated instances?" he says. If it is a trend, Betsill worries about the effect on the county economy, which he says is currently being driven by the construction and real estate industries. He says when projects are stalled, the people with the money find somewhere else to invest it and it could be a long time returning. "That money won't just come back in two years," he says. But people opposed to the current rate of development say that money shouldn't be the primary consideration. They say the environment and quality of life is just as important to Maui's economy. The battle over the type and pace of development played out in the recent nomination of Dr. Diane Shepherd to the Maui Planning Commission. Shepherd, a Kihei veterinarian, has been an outspoken critic of overdevelopment in coastal areas and her nomination drew opposition. The Hawaii Operating Engineers Industry Stabilization Fund, a group representing general contractors and heavy equipment operators, officially opposed her nomination. So did the MCA, who circulated a petition that cited four reasons she should not be appointed. According to their petition, she would be the third member from Kihei on the ninemember commission and would be the seventh woman. The MCA says there should be better geographic representation, as well as more men on the commission. They say the construction industry, particularly labor unions, aren't represented on the commission. The next member should come from these ranks, they maintain. But most importantly, they oppose Shepherd philosophically. They specifically object to her Maui Tomorrow connections, a group that they see as wanting to stop all growth on Maui. The MCA blames that organization for creating a situation on Maui "where employment and a future for local and future residents are jeopardized." That theme was echoed in written and oral testimony before the Maui County Council's Government Relations Committee, chaired by council member Dain Kane. Tom Cook, president of TMC General Contracting, both testified and listened to the daylong testimony. He opposed Shepherd's nomination. He said he respected her, but that her passion about her vision of Maui would make her prejudiced against construction projects. Cook says the construction industry has been one of the few ways someone without a formal education can be a success. He says he didn't finish high school, yet he now owns a successful business, with 30 employees. He tells his employees that if they develop a good work ethic, if they learn a trade, if they make money and pay their bills, become a contributing part of the community, that they're not

wasting their time. "I'm selling that dream as an employer," says Cook. Cook says Foley's appointment as Planning Director means that the Planning Department is now very radical. He says the Planning Commission needs more balance, with the building industry represented. Shepherd was one of 80 nominees to 32 various boards and commissions, including the Maui Planning Commission. Arakawa nominates and Kane's committee makes recommendations to accept or decline the nominations. Their recommendations go to the full County Council for approval. Unless the majority of the Council votes to reject a nominee, that nominee will be appointed. In Shepherd's case, people testified in person and submitted written testimony both opposing and supporting her. The MCA rallied their members to oppose, while the Ohana Coalition, a political action committee made up of many Maui Tomorrow board members, used their influence to bring out Shepherd supporters. In the end, the Government Relations Committee voted to recommend Shepherd. Along with Kane, the committee is made up of council members Charmaine Tavares, Danny Mateo, Riki Hokama and Mike Molina. Molina wasn't present and didn't vote, but his absence was excused because he was traveling. Council members JoAnne Johnson and Wayne Nishiki also sat in on the testimony and appeared to support her nomination. Unless five council members vote against her, Shepherd will be appointed to the Maui Planning Commission by the end of the month. Although votes could change, it seems likely that she will be appointed. Arakawa appointed a citizen's selection committee to review the applications of the people who applied to become board and commission members. Former Planning Commissioner Dick Mayer was on that committee and told Kane's committee why he thought it was important to appoint a real watchdog to the Planning Commission. He said that what was at stake in Shepherd's appointment was the recognition that on Maui, the environment is the economy. "Other people talk about how construction is needed," says Mayer. "Construction is a way of building things here that will hopefully help our economy but building and building will not make the economy we all want here. We want a place that is lovely to live in and lovely for tourists to enjoy because that is our economy. Overbuilding will not do the job." Mayer says he hopes Shepherd will be the sort of watchdog he was when he was on the Planning Commission in the 1970s, when developments at Wailea were seeking Planning Commission approval. As a Planning Commissioner he was able to get concessions that benefited both the public and the environment. The boardwalk in front of the Wailea hotels is an example. "They originally had planned to put those hotels right up on those cliffs and right along the oceanfront and I worked very hard to get setbacks from the ocean," said Mayer. Developers were also going to limit the access of local people to the beaches on the Wailea

ed by a Charter amendment, appointed Foley as Planning Director and nominated Shepherd to the Planning Commission, signaling a real shift in how the county will be doing business. Arakawa may just be out ahead of the curve. The pendulum seems to have swung on Maui. In the past, Maui Tomorrow victories have been few and far between. Members showed up and testified at public meetings, made what they thought were strong cases and saw decisions still go against them. After the election, though, Maui Tomorrow and their supporters may now have momentum behind them. Shepherd advancing towards a Planning Commission seat is evidence of that. While both developers and environmentalists want a solid island economy, they do have different visions that will need to be resolved. Ohana Coalition member Sean Lester says they are willing to work with builders to bring about truly sustainable development. "Hopefully we will be able to open dialogue with developers and construction people where we will see the day true smart growth occurs here in Maui County," says Lester. Both sides claim to have the best interest of Maui at heart and probably do, as everybody lives on an island. But just how the battle between environmentalists and developers plays out in the future remains to be seen. We know how it has gone in the past.
property, which Mayer successfully opposed. "This is not against construction. This is making sure we do things right." Mayer pointed out that gender imbalance occurs on a number of the current planning related bodies, including the Water Board (eight men, one woman), the Board of Variances and Appeals (seven men, one woman) and the Urban Design Board (nine men, no women). "I think that to have seven women on the Planning Commission would not necessarily be a disservice to the overall planning effort in Maui County." Mayer said that Kihei is the fastest growing area in the state and an argument could be made that three people from there on the Planning Commission weren't too many. The selection committee did try to get someone to serve who lived in the Haiku-Paia area, but the person declined. Shepherd's appointment will be another political victory for the Ohana Coalition and Maui Tomorrow and a defeat for the MCA. The Ohana Coalition didn't endorse a candidate for mayor in the general election, but in the primary they endorsed Rob Parsons, who threw his support to Arakawa after Parsons lost in the primary. Parsons got about 3,000 votes in the primary and Arakawa won by about 1,000. Arakawa hired Parsons to a new Environmental Coordinator position mandat-

Eddie’s Fast Food and Catering I stumbled into a tiny little eatery in Kahului by accident just the other day. I was tired and hungry from a day’s worth of errands in town when I spotted an open sign hanging in the window of a small unit in a strip mall in Kahului’s industrial district. Worn out and willing to take a risk, I pushed through the door of Eddie’s Fast Food and Catering looking for just about anything to stuff into my belly. The place is no bigger than a breadbox and sparsely outfitted with a double row of utilitarian tables and chairs leading up to a single steam table for service. A small kitchen bends around back and out of sight. It’s just about what I expected to find and I resign myself to a quick, tasty meal and a sore belly to follow. The short, friendly Filipino lady who greets us turns out to be Eddie’s wife, Letty. Eddie has the culinary training and experience, but I suspect that the traditional Filipino dishes lining the steam table are Letty’s own recipes. I have to be honest here - when I initially looked at the choices available to me, I kind of lost my appetite. I know that’s a horrible first
impression to have, but some of this stuff just didn’t look appetizing. Letty smiled graciously and asked for our order. I drew up all my vast powers of intestinal fortitude and pointed out the items I wanted: some kind of darkly colored mixed vegetable, a yellowish porridge-like substance, and Chicken Adobo with two scoops of white rice to act as a buffer. Letty laughs and smiles again, offering me a sample of Dinardaaran, or blood pork, simmering in its rich, darkly purple sauce. She’s apparently gone through this before because my expression doesn’t faze her one bit as she deposits a morsel on my plate. Well, I’ve said before that I’ll try anything once, so I close my eyes and down the hatch it goes. It’s nothing at all like I expected. The pork is very tender and flavorful, completely lacking the bitter, iron rich undertones suggested by its color. More than a little encouraged, I dig in to the rest of my plate. The Chicken Adobo is flaky, tender yumminess with a little vinegar and soy. I still hesitate at the bowl of ochre colored porridge but its smooth, subtle taste soon has me slurping it up. It’s Mongo Beans, Letty says, and its texture is reminiscent of lentils. My favorite new discovery is the Pansit.
It’s a mixture of eggplant, zucchini, and green beans simmered down in an exotic brown sauce that I don’t quite recognize. The flavors and textures just blow me away. Letty’s not giving up the recipe so it looks like I’m going to have to start frequenting the place to get my fix. My entire meal was under eight dollars, and the rest of the menu is similarly priced. The most expensive item is the Prawn Sarciado at $8.95, with tomato, onion, and egg. I see plenty of room to expand my horizons with exotic dishes like the Kare Kare (oxtail and tripe with vegetables and peanut butter sauce), the Squid Guisado with onion, tomato, and celery, and the Pig’s Feet Soup with mustard cabbage, tomato and onions. Shrimp Tempura, Chicken Katsu, and Fish and Chips are some of the more regular items on the menu, but I hear that the Pork Adobo Omelet is their best seller and it’s served all day long. Eddie’s also offers catering for all occasions with a long list of authentic Filipino dishes and local favorites like Beef Broccoli, Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs and Shoyu Chicken. Drop by their friendly kitchen at 230 Hana Hwy., suite 2-B, and expand your culinary horizon today.

WINE OF THE
WEEK
BY ANTHONY MOORE
Toad Hollow Vineyards ‘99 Pinot Noir Reserve Russian River Valley This week’s pick is Toad Hollow Vineyards’ 1999 Pinot Noir Reserve from Russian River Valley. The Russian River Valley is one of the highest appellations in all of California. Given this, the Russian River has the potential to grow some of the nicest fruit. The combination of cool nights, warm days and the cool ocean breeze, gives the grapes a long growing season and makes them well concentrated. Though the valley has the best success with Chardonnay, pinot noir and zinfandel, there is an array of fruit grown here. This single vineyard pinot is the first estate bottling for Toad Hollow. It is light in body and leaps out of the glass with aroma. The strong fruit-worthiness and soft mouth feel makes for a well-rounded, easy drinking wine. The nose, body and cherry-like fruit quality remind me of a French Burgundy. Enjoy!

9pm next Thursday, March 20th, at Hapa’s in Kihei. It’s the return of the world famous Beat Junkies, featuring DJ Rhettmatic. If you caught the Beat Junkies at Hapa’s last August, then you’ll be nodding yes, this will be one of the best DJ shows to hit the island. The innovative works of Beat Junkies’ musical stylings are impressive, to be sure. But it’s the wide range of influences - from jazz greats like John Coltrane, to old school funky R & B like James Brown and Prince, as well as classic rock like the Beatles and Hip-Hop legends like Grandmaster Flash - that are all incorporated to create the greatest dance mix you will ever hear. I even saw people dancing last time who wouldn’t be caught dead on the dance floor! These award-winning DJs are amazingly adept at really feeling out their audience and interactively producing a vibe and sensation that is hard to resist. And why should you?

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY
Tears Of Oblivion Simpleminded Propaganda Bombs Africa ) Tears of the Sun ( "Tears of the Sun" is, by any measure, a boring exercise in American hegemony by way of cinematic propaganda. Most telling in screenwriters Alex Lasker's and Patrick Cirillo's script is the way they relieve themselves of political association - other than that of an American military cheering band by inventing a third-world conflict in Nigeria to isolate their exploitative narrative culled from atrocities in places like Rwanda and Sudan. When a U.S. air squad finally makes their belated cavalry call to bomb three kinds of hell out of a troop of attacking Muslim military rebels at the film's end, you can witness American cinema being pushed back 60 years - and that's being generous. Nigeria's democratic government has recently been taken over in a coup by a ruthless military dictator, setting off a Muslim military rebellion keen on killing Christian civilians as well as innocent natives for some ill-defined "ethnic cleansing" (see American jingoistic propaganda circa the war in former Yugoslavia). Enter Navy SEAL Lieutenant A.K. Waters (Bruce "Ireally-want-to-go-to-war-for-real" Willis) and his small unit to rescue an American citizen by marriage, one Dr. Lena Kendricks (Monica Bellucci - "Irreversible"), a sexy "Doctor Without Borders" physician who refuses to leave without getting her villagers to political asylum. Kendricks' humanitarian demand sets the stage for some stoic hero posing by Waters who compensates for his inarticulate inability to bed Dr. Kendricks by abandoning his mission and succumbing to her ultimatum. What should have been a single day search and rescue command turns into a drawn out affair with Waters' squad leading unhurried villagers through jungle dangers to what will be a centerpiece of slaughter in the film.
Director Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day") lets the googly-moogly rip as Waters and his men come upon an all-day village massacre where Nigerian Muslim rebels pour gasoline on a naked man trapped inside a tire, while other rebel soldiers rape and mutilate their captives. Rules of engagement go out the window as Waters gives the order to sniper attack the brutes before going in for a close surgical assault to wipe out the bad guys. The violence and gore is shown from a voyeuristic distance and in a limited dramatic context with briefly paced shots. This isn't the kind of storytelling where developed characters suffer with meaning; this is a black and white narrative where evil is absolute and irrational, while good is conflicted - but just as absolute and irrational. Fuqua lingers on Africa's lush mountains and waterfalls to play on audience sentimentality, but never so patently as with the film's obtrusive musical score where he telegraphs every intended emotional response like a heavy-handed drummer playing out of time. The distance that Fuqua keeps from his characters, combined with zero IQ narrative makes for an uncomfortable audience experience because you never feel like you're in capable hands. The entitled military moral here is that, it's noble to bomb your enemy, but face-toface torture is abhorrent. But when Lt. Waters suspects that one of the villagers he is attempting to rescue is sending location signals to the rebels, he threatens to start killing them one by one until someone talks as if the natives were his hostages. The intimidation works before our hero has to start splattering any brains on the jungle floor, but the point is that this model of American military experience has no better strategy available in his limited mental arsenal to deal with the situation.
It's ironic that Monica Bellucci ("The Brotherhood of the Wolf") is currently featured in Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible," a cautionary film that strategically positions a vicious revenge-murder as its point of no return opening. The oxymoron of using war (modern American definition: "bombing") to liberate people distracts from what it means to "rescue" someone. The American Government's current rhetoric of fear threat-
ens to bury a design of moral choices that every democracy is predicated on. "Tears of the Sun" ends with Nigerian natives blankly pledging their thanks and love for their American liberators, whom "God" will never forget. One could take from this sticky valentine ending that it's the Muslims for whom "God" lacks remembrance. Couldn't the filmmakers have kept that to themselves?

COVER STORY
SURF
A simple record it seems, just drums and bass (and some distorted yelling from the drummer) they claim. Still I cannot believe the complex, crazy barrage made by this totally awesome duo. Heavy as fuck, but it never seems to get angry or hurtful. After reviewing their DVD release, “The Power Of Salad”, I thought that in comparison, their albums wouldn't hit home quite as much, but I stand corrected. This album leaves me with the same high that their video did, except that it's more portable. “Wonderful Rainbow” happens to be a perfect description of the sounds that inhabit this release. I highly recommend this album for anyone that loves heavy and distorted rock, but has outgrown the need to wear only black and be unhappy. Press play, smile, and get prepared to have your ass rocked off. [Tang Li Wheebs] Ha - he said the f-word. This album is loud, noisy, messy, and full of energy. Perfect to play during morning showers. [The Mole]

MAUI O'BREWS
One of the two MC's from the recently disbanded Antipop Consortium, Beans has just released his first solo album, and I think it's excellent. Combining traditional East Coast hip hop aesthetics with elements of contemporary electronic music and the language of science fiction, Beans presents a sound that is boldly different. One thing that especially stands out on this album is its intensity. From the aggressive vocal delivery and lyrical subject matter to the loud and crisp beats, this definitely isn't background music that can be easily ignored. [The Mole] Creative and varied. Pretty well put together, but I can't see myself needing this album on too regular of a basis. [Tang Li Wheebs]

The third album from one of San Francisco's finest pop exports is a logical huge step forward. Much more diverse songwriting and textures lurk here than on previous outings. They mix 60's pop jangle with a bit of 70's punk attitude to concoct a nice blend of moody bedroom indie-rock well suited for Belle And Sebastian fans. Not as much of their loveable wall of sound as on their last release, but they still keep it moving at a good pace and make the ride worth it. [Tang Li Wheebs] Wow nifty. This is different than most anything I've ever heard. Thumbs up. [The Mole]
BOBBY KARATE: HOT TRIPS, COLD RETURNS (Woodson Lateral, www.woodsonlateral.com)
MARTY DREAD
Another Northwest export and Lamplighter label mate, Bobby Karate also comes at you from a glitch-rendered laptop perspective. Hot Trips, Cold Returns is filled with plenty of pops and clicks to keep your family and friends wondering whether the CD is skipping or not. Rather minimalist and choppy, it makes for a pleasantly disjointed listen while you're staying up half the night plugging away on the computer. I could also see this album being the soundtrack to drawing or painting some nicely abstract portraits of your pets to decorate your room with. Or just putting it on and letting it carry you off to an interesting, drifting zone of being half asleep and daydreaming. Nice and relaxing in a “my computer loves to tell me nice stories” sort of way. I like it. [Tang Li Wheebs] Lots of bleeps and blips, with a mellow overtone. It's like music that you could play for little android kids at naptime. [The Mole]

(independent, www.mp3.com/ionz149) From the suburban wastelands of Chula Vista, California, IONZ149 makes really nice beats. He raps too, but 20.02 Beat Portfolio is his debut instrumental album. I like to play it in the shower and rap to it. The music ranges from dark and gritty to light and pretty, always backed by punchy, rolling drum patterns. The compositions have enough variety to make the album an engaging listen from start to finish. If you'd like to purchase the CD contact ionz149@yahoo.com or send $3 to Chris P.; 1570 Crown Point Ct.; Chula Vista, CA 91911. For three bucks you can't go wrong. [The Mole] Good solid Instrumentals. I would like to hear what some vocals could add. Nice. [Tang Li Wheebs]

Nothing like telling a woman you love her, only to get ragged on for lacking originality. Take a woman like this to a five-star hotel, with an inroom Jacuzzi big enough for Olympic water polo, and she'll find some reason it compares unfavorably with her dinky, no-water-pressure shower at home: "The grout's too clean here. It lacks personality." Fill her apartment with hundreds of roses, and she'll accuse you of turning it into a giant mobile home park for aphids. No matter what you do, her champagne glass will always be half-empty -even if you lay an intercontinental champagne pipeline, direct to her place from Moet & Chandon. This isn't because you're doing the wrong things. You're doing the right things. You're just doing them for the wrong woman - one who's a fighter, not a lover. A woman like this - if she could get frequent flyer miles for power trips would upgrade her way in no time to a private jet, complete with wall-to-wall cashmere carpeting and gold leaf-covered barf bags. Deep down, she might not think she's right about absolutely everything, but she is convinced of one thing: You're wrong. About everything. And then some. In fact, she probably has the words "HE'S WRONG!" lasered into a steel plate in her head. Who's "HE"? You, the next guy she's with, the guy after that - who cares? She isn't looking to get close to you (or anybody); just to keep somebody, anybody, in her general vicinity at all times, so she won't have to be alone with herself. Unfortunately, she'll be too busy cataloguing what's wrong with you to make an appointment or two (or 2,642) for herself at the therapist's office. That's where she might get a handle on the notion that you have to work your way up to being comfortable alone before you can make a nontoxic attempt at being together. Now, about the mushy stuff: Women who have successfully completed their mental health homework want men, not mush-dispensers. Men do nice things for women they like just to be nice. Mush-dispensers carpet-bomb a woman with gooey words and bright, shiny objects - generally, after knowing her for about 3.5 minutes - hoping sugar rush and gift-glare will blind her to their small, brown, loserness. If "small, brown, loserness" doesn't describe your overall aura, just keep nice-ing it up like you always have...that is, until you get a response like, "Yeah, so you promised me the moon. Too cheap to throw in the sun and stars, huh?" That would be your cue to develop "intimacy issues." In a word: RUN!
weekend. Friday and Saturday will open your heart and get you roaring and raving. The full moon on Monday will crank up your responsibilities. You may have to do some organizing and rearranging. TAURUS: Your social mojo continues to take you places. People like you for your earthy wit and wisdom. St. Paddy’s Day and Purim combine with the full moon to give you corned beef and matzo ball soup. Irish whiskey meets kosher wine. "Saints preserve us"! GEMINI: Your multiple talents are in great need. Learn about some new art techniques. Your good ideas are about to be adopted. The weekend looks good for being with close friends and family. Practice yoga, tai chi or some other physical balancing system. Let go of the anger. CANCER: The fertile moon in Cancer is with you on the 13th. This is a good day to plant seeds or to go fishing. The full moon is in your house of the environment, close friends and communication. Your sense of adventure needs to include family. LEO: We can't measure our lives by how well we've done during good times, but by how graceful we were able to adapt during adversity. Patience is your friend during this period. The full moon could make you want to go on a spending spree. Your best bet is to wait. VIRGO: The full moon rises in Virgo Tuesday in the early AM. St. Patrick’s Day finds you enjoying an enthusiastic celebration of green beer. The Irish, the Hebrews and the Hawaiians have all suffered under the influence of British Rule. What does reconciliation mean to you? LIBRA: Charitable actions are done in a spirit of fairness. You like the idea of equal opportunity for everyone. Friday and Saturday will be your best days for socializing. The full moon could expose your secrets and enhance your dreams. SCORPIO: When you're at your creative best, the best thing to do is share the love. Break out into a smile because a new day has dawned. The full moon has you let loose in the company of others. You've got what it takes to facilitate the next miracle. SAGITTARIUS: Commitment to family and to your roots is of utmost importance. As you enter the dream space you come up with visions. The weekend looks good for an exotic get-away. The full moon provides an opportunity to show off your talents. CAPRICORN: Becoming a good neighbor in your community is a good idea whether you live in a mansion or a trailer. Sustaining your love of luxury will require temperance as well as a love of the practical. The full moon invites adventure and ignites passion. AQUARIUS: Money can be deceptive. Find out where your investments really go before getting involved with sweat labor or weapons of mass destruction. The full moon turns up your libido a couple of notches. Be careful you may come home with a leprechaun. PISCES: It's the last week of your season. The full moon could have you taking a chance on romance. Perhaps you're a little luckier than usual. In the long run you gain inspiration. You are learning to flow with freedom and spontaneity.

Has "I debate you" replaced "I love you"? A woman I know (whose relationships never seem to last) insists that women don't really like what she calls "the mushy stuff" from men. According to her, women prefer men who will "spar" with them to men who are sweet and do nice things for them. I just broke up with my girlfriend of five years – a woman who always seemed appreciative of everything I'm now told I shouldn't do. I'm not ready to start dating, but I will be in the near future. So, tell me, am I now supposed to be rude and combative for women to like me? What, exactly, is the unwritten dating protocol on how not nice I'm supposed to be? - Conflicted About Conflict
