NEWS

I like the "Maui Time" except for one thing; Travis Henderson's opinions entitled “Force Fed”. The only redeeming value of Henderson's column is how it illustrates what an American propaganda junky believes. His March 13 article, "Who's Your Daddy?" pushed me over the edge. First of all, the USA does not use and never has used military intervention to help poor subjects of dictators. An honest review of actual history reveals the opposite. The USA routinely replaces democratically elected governments that are serving their people and replaces them with repressive military dictatorships that support corporate America’s interests which include cheap sweatshop labor, loose environmental controls, cheap land, access to resources like lumber, oil, gold, etc. Second, many people and many diplomats deny that Hussein is a danger. He is certainly less danger than the USA. The only danger Hussein represents is a danger to the plan of US and British oil companies getting control of the second largest oil reservoir in the world. Now that the pipeline in Afghanistan is back on line, Hussein is the biggest obstacle to western corporate Oil interests. As for our American Freedoms, our forefathers fought against a tyrant named King George. What amazes me is how did crazy King George get back in the saddle again! George W. Bush has done more to erode our freedoms than anyone since King George. This may be proof of reincarnation. As for being brave enough to step in, Bush wants to send young men unrelated to him to fight for His oil. When George W. Bush was in the National Guard he had the courage to go AWOL but he had his daddy around to fix that up. As far as pre-empting Hussein before he pre-empts us: The reality is that if the USA acts to push its empire building even further than it has, and does so without UN support, the world will likely feel backed into a corner and retaliate with unprecedented violence directed at the USA from all corners of the Earth! Please, find an editorialist who is well informed and insightful - "Maui Time" deserves better. -George W. Chyz, Haiku George: There is no doubt that America's ambition is its major detriment. But remember one thing: If you lived in Iraq and wrote this letter criticizing the Iraqi regime, you and your family would be raped, tortured, and murdered - publicly. -Travis Henderson

STOP CROWDING THE WHALES I live in Maalaea. The Bay is known for being a humpback whale birthing and calving area. Yet, everyday I see whale-watching boats pursue mother and baby calves

that rest there, forcing them to move out to deeper water. This is a cheap shot as the whaleboats can meet their "guarantee" to see a whale right outside the boat harbor. This lack of respect is yet another aspect of our sickened, crass, spoiled culture that sells out everything under the sun to make a buck, taking everything for granted that it will always be there for us to pick over! It's no wonder the whale count is down this year. It has been horrendous watching it go on in the Bay, Disneyland-style, and I'm sure it's even worse in areas where the boats know that they are not being scrutinized further out. We would deserve it if the whales instinctually seek out more distant waters away from Maui. And what kind of culture are we to require a "guarantee" to see anything in the wild on demand? We have sunk to a new low with this type of consumerism. Shame on all of us. Here's an idea: all the whaleboats could pool their resources and install a mechanical whale ala Steven Speilberg. Then they could still meet their "guarantee" to see a whale, get their money and leave the real whales alone!! We won't tell! No whaleboats or recreational powerboats should be allowed to come into the interior of Maalaea Bay to protect this humpback calving area. Maui County should pass a law in this regard, since people don't seem to be able to control their instincts to abuse and consume everything beautiful under the sun until it is gone. Hopeful in Maalaea, Wendy Weller

JUST GIVE ME A GIRL WHO CAN FART The recent article by Christy Miles about "The Flatulence Deodorizer" was superb. After reading it, I was immediately in love with the author and filled with a deep desire to spend the rest of my life with this woman at any cost. Anyone with such a profound sense of down-to-earthness, so in touch with themselves, that discussing gas-passing openly and in a candid manner is a woman after my own heart. However, I would make sure that her desk is as close to an open window as possible! Keep her away from the smoking lounge too, methane and open flame is a deadly combination. Smitten in Haiku, Mike Moore We're glad you are so safety conscious, Mike. Although Christy is a gem, she recently left to join the circus. But don't give up Mike, we here at MTW have positive evidence that all girls fart, and you should spend a little more time sniffing around to find that special girl. Ed. OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

REALITY TV Attention anti-war protesters: not only are we are going to win this war, we are going to search out new wars to win in the future. Why? Because our kids have been training for this. Think about it. When pilots learn to fly, where do they train? Simulators. Huge virtual reality video games where you get as close to the real thing as possible. Tom Clancy's Rainbow SIX? It's not a video game; it's a war game. EA Sports has a game called Medal Of Honor: Frontline. Its motto is "You don't play, you volunteer." And our kids are growing up on this stuff. It's kind of ironic actually. Up until now the government has been scrambling to find ways to explain the rise in violence among the youth generation. Video games in particular came under fire from the people in D.C. The new crop of violent video games where kids could watch the blood spurt from wounds they just inflicted on their enemies was going to be the end of our civilization. As it turns out, it just may be the reason we win this war. There's only one problem with spending all your time in simulators. No matter how "virtual" it is, it's still not the real thing. In a flight simulator, a pilot doesn't feel the actual weight of the aircraft. He also doesn't have a load of passengers living on his every move. In a war simulator, that gun your "enemy" is aiming at you isn't going to actually fire. You won't

feel the bullet whizzing past your ear and most importantly, when you shoot him you won't see the true results of a bullet impacting human flesh. So what we get is a bunch of kids who grow up with the commando mentality without the battle reality. After-school recreation is not about baseball or even Pac-Man. It’s about practicing urban warfare. On the plus side, when it's time to go to war, we'll have an army that's already half there. On the negative side, when they get all the way there and experience the difference between the game and the real thing, will they be able to handle? Perhaps we can take a hint from Lieutenant General William Wallace, who said, "The enemy we are fighting is different from the one we war-gamed against." Memo to Lt. Gen. Wallace - No shit! The anti-war people have been saying that for months. They have been saying it's not going to be a cakewalk, that it's not going to be a Gulf War II. But they also predicted that the U.S. would turn tail and run scared when they realized the true scope of their fight. So what did the U.S. and Lt. Gen. Wallace do when we realized they were fighting a different enemy than the one we war-gamed against? We adjusted our tactics. You see, the powers in charge know this isn't a video game. This is a war. This isn't a bunch of kids pushing buttons on their joysticks, regardless of what the protesters want you to believe. This isn't a simulation. This is the real thing. This is the U.S. military. And for right or wrong, they are the most advanced fighting force the world has ever seen, and this is not a game.

This is for all the ladies What is up with the men on this island? I recently went to play a game of pool and as a normal human being would do, I engaged in a conversation with a man. As the respectful person that I am, I listened and talked back. At the end of our conversation, he proceeded to tell me how much we had a connection and how he could tell I was very attracted to him. This scenario happens all the time, a woman engages with a man in conversation and he thinks that they have a big connection. So now my friends and I have learned how to put on “the bitch” front so we won't even be bothered by any men. Also, I thought that moving over here we would definitely be meeting some hot quality surfer men or at least some chill guys to hang with. Umm, wrong. All the surfer guys are either complete burnouts or total players. And as far as the older men go, stop trying to sleep with girls in their 20's. Yuck. You Maui men need to get an education or something. As far as my friends and I go, we are heading back to the place where fine surfer men are bred…northern California. Peace out, Maui loser men.

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.

MARCIA WEINER Maui Visitor’s Bureau 1. What is the current island-wide occupancy rate? It’s about 80% for March… it’s about 82%. April looks real good ‘til Easter and then, as historically always happens right after Easter, occupancy will drop. 2. How does this rate compare to this time last year? We’re above last year a couple of percentages, at least. We’re right on par with 2000. 3. How well do you think local efforts market and promote Maui as a destination worldwide? Well, you’re asking the wrong person because we do the marketing. We do not market worldwide, but I think that our effort we do in the areas of countries that we do marketing, which would be the U.S. and Canada, Japan, and some of Europe, have proven to be very effective campaigns. 4. With rising traffic, the growing presence of strip-malls, and overdevelopment –How do you think these elements will effect tourism on Maui in the long run? Maui, from our satisfaction studies - one of the reasons that they want to come back to Maui after they have been here is because of our natural beauty. Traffic has not been a huge negative where visitors are concerned, but we have been working on addressing some of the infrastructural challenges with the DOT, with the County, etc. for the last couple of years. And I don’t know of any new strip-malls. 5. What can we do to encourage people to vacation on Maui despite increasingly expensive costs? When we take and compare Maui’s prices with other visitor destinations that would be in the same caliber, the New Yorks, the San Franciscos, the LAs, they all have the additional resort fees and so on and so forth. Maui is still a very good value for travelers that are seeking the kind of destination that we offer.

1. What is the current island-wide occupancy rate? Usually, we are in the high 80’s [%]. 2. How does this rate compare to this time last year? We are down from last year. And last year was coming off of 9-11. 3. How well do you think local efforts market and promote Maui as a destination worldwide? The State of Hawaii markets us weak. Local Maui is good. Lahaina is really good. 4. With rising traffic, the growing pres-

ence of strip-malls, and over-development –How do you think these elements will effect tourism on Maui in the long run? I don’t think the presence of strip-malls, or the growth will do anything but just facilitate us to be ready for more customers, but I don’t think it will attract more or detract from our appeal. 5. What can we do to encourage people to vacation on Maui despite increasingly expensive costs? Better availability of getting to and from Maui direct so you don’t have to stop over. Lengthening the runway would be one way you could help. Get the bigger planes so those visitors from the East Coast and The South can fly direct. And bring back the aloha spirit that we seem to be losing a little bit.

MIKE WHITE General Manager at Kaanapali Beach Hotel 1. What is the current island-wide occupancy rate? I don’t know what that is. I get those figures after the fact. I can’t give you our specific occupancy rate, but March ended up about 8% above last year. April bookings are about 11% above last year, and May is about 6.5% above last year. But anything can change if we have a terrorist attack. 2. Answered above. 3. How well do you think local efforts market and promote Maui as a destination worldwide? Maui has always done an outstanding job of marketing itself both nationally and internationally. I think with the increased funding from the County and the State through the room tax we are spending a lot more money then we used to on marketing. I think it has had a very good affect. 4. With rising traffic, the growing presence of strip-malls, and over-development how do you think these elements will effect tourism on Maui in the long run? We have to be conscious of the presentation we are making to our visitors. As a resident I want things to be kept relatively pristine. From a visitor perspective, people today who came here twenty years ago say, “Well, it’s grown a little more than I’m comfortable with so I may go look for something else.” Many of our visitors come from places that are far more overbuilt than we are. And so from their perspective, Maui - even with more traffic concerns and a few more buildings than we used to have - still looks like a wonderful paradise. It’s really a matter of perspective. There is a point at which some people get turned off. 5. What can we do to encourage people to vacation on Maui despite increasingly expensive costs? I think a lot of us are doing that. Our rates are not substantially higher than they were ten years ago. My rates are up but I’m keeping my rates low in order to get occupancy.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES A New York Daily News investigation revealed in March that the Postal Service has spent at least $3.6 million of stamp buyers' money in recent years sending its Inspector General staff through a series of executive conferences that featured exercises in wrapping each other in toilet paper and aluminum foil, building sand castles in freezing weather at the beach, and freely making animal noises, all because the conference sponsors convinced Inspector General Karla Corcoran that those exercises would improve job performance and make the staff work together better. Other therapeutic tasks included dressing in cat costumes and asking make-believe wizards for advice.

LATEST PROTESTS Belgian actor Benjamin Verdonck lived nearly naked in a cage with a pig in Ghent for three days in November hoping the pig would "teach" him why there is such strife in the world (results not reported). And James Albert Ernest Togo, 20, of Brisbane, arrested for mooning a policeman, claimed in December that Australia's Constitution gave him the right to stick out his bare buttocks in political protest, which he said was part of his Aboriginal tradition. And in October, in the midst of a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals anti-milk demonstration at an Aberdeen, Scotland, high school, about 100 milk-loving students spent 10 minutes angrily drenching PETA's cow-costumed spokesman with milk.

PEOPLE WHO DON'T KEEP UP WITH THE NEWS The Transportation Security Administration revealed in March that, in the last 12 months, airline passengers at U.S. airports had been found by screeners to have tried to board with 4.8 million prohibited items, including 1.4 million knives, 1,100 guns, 125,000 incendiary items and 40,000 box-cutters. And in February, a 45-year-old Japanese tourist attempted to board a flight at Miami International Airport carrying a canister of gasoline, two boxes of matches and a barbecue grill, and he was taken into custody when he refused to give them up.

A NATION AT WAR Top Pentagon and CIA officials met with the author of "The Bible Code," who said Osama bin Laden's whereabouts can be detected by connecting letters from ancient Hebrew (February). And eight hours before the U.S.'s "Orange" alert on Feb. 7, four heavily armed Cuban military men wandered through downtown Key West, Fla., unknown to anyone in Washington. (Turned out they had arrived by boat to defect and were looking for someone to surrender to.) And Jake Greenwald announced he would offer "terror tours" in Israel for $5,000 each to visitors wanting helicopter and simulated-games tours of West Bank bomb and battle sites (but has suspended the venture because of the war in Iraq) (March).

As of Jan. 1, 2003, the Maui County Council passed an ordinance that was supposed to make Maui’s restaurants smokefree. But just three months into this smoking ban, many restaurant-goers are realizing this law just isn’t working. According to the ordinance, smoking is now prohibited in “any restaurant, including a bar area within a restaurant’s premises,” said Council Services attorney David Raatz. But establishments where the food sales make up only a small percentage of the total sales can qualify as bars and are not included in the ban. “The definition to be classified as a bar is fairly stringent,” Raatz said. The food sales have to be less then 33 percent and the establishment has to submit the sales figures to the Department of Finance. Most places that call themselves bars are not going to meet this definition.” But this exception can be confusing to the public and leaves an open door for owners to make their own rules. You can’t smoke at Mulligan’s, Casanova, or Maui Brews, all of which many would assume to be bars. But yet you can still light up at The Sly Mongoose, Life’s a Beach, and Lulu’s. As one bartender from Lulu’s put it, “Sure, people can still smoke here because we qualify as a ‘bar’.” But when asked if they really had to prove that, he laughed and said, “No, because there really is no one coming out checking the numbers and enforcing it.” And owner of Hecocks in Lahaina, Tom Hecock, said he is going to continue to allow people to smoke until the county wants to pay his bills. “This shouldn’t be a law. It’s asinine and it’s costing people thousands of dollars,” he said. “Ninety-five percent of the people who drink also smoke. If you don’t want to be around it then get out because nobody is going to tell me what to do.” He said he isn’t sure what category his establishment falls under, but when the dining room is closed he isn’t going to tell anyone to put out their cigarette. And Raatz said the only thing the restaurant is required to do by law is to place “clearly legible signs that include the words ‘Smoking Prohibited By Law’” throughout. The owners aren’t held responsible for enforcing the no smoking, which means they really aren’t breaking the law. “The Council didn’t want any conflict between owners and patrons,” Raatz said. “They thought it should be left up to voluntary complaints and the police department.”

So owners can choose to look the other way because they are not being held accountable. But Raatz said even though there are no immediate plans to change this, some Council Members do have it on their agenda for the future. Council Member Jo Anne Johnson, who was a major proponent behind the law, said she definitely wants to make some changes soon because many people are disappointed in the outcome so far. “Basically this law was passed on the honor system and apparently there are owners and patrons who just completely disregard it and treat it as meaningless,” she said. “There are restaurants that have the no smoking signs up, yet we have gotten several complaints that people are clearly still being allowed to smoke.” The only enforcement is a very busy police department that has more important calls to respond to. If the police had the manpower, officers could go out and actually enforce the fine of $25 to $50. But that is just not realistic anyway because the offender would either be done smoking by the time the police arrived or gone, Johnson said. “I am hoping to wait it out for a few more months and see if people start to comply. But if it doesn’t get any better, I would like to go for an all out ban across the board with stiff consequences for offenders,” she said. “If this law is to protect people in the workplace like we said it was from the beginning, then how can you differentiate between the health of those working in a ‘restaurant’ and those working in a ‘bar.’ The gray area regarding the percentage of sales should have no bearing in this matter.” Johnson said she doesn’t want this to be another law passed that becomes another piece of meaningless legislation. “If we pass laws that have no teeth, we are telling the public that we are doing something, but it’s really just an allusion because we have accomplished nothing,” she said. “There has to be an enforcement element and some sort of consequences.” Johnson said smoke-free environments have so much support nation-wide, and Maui shouldn’t be any different. “We come across as being a health conscious state, but still allowing smoking is a contradiction of all that we promote,” she said. “With our beautiful outdoor environment, clean air and water, we should be a front-runner for these types of things.” Frequent restaurant patron Michael McDonald summed it up by saying, “I was really pleased when the legislation first passed, but now I see the law is totally worthless. Going out in Maui is no less smoke-filled than it ever was.”

MAUI ON THE CHEAP Tips on squeezing the most out of your dollar THE SUNSHINE TAX Ahhh, Maui, with its swaying palm trees, aquamarine snorkeling wonderlands, and balmy winter tradewinds. “You’re so lucky to live there!” others tell us, which is true. Yet most don’t realize the hefty price tag we pay to do so, whether we’re raised here or choose Maui as our home. According to the latest Consumer Price Index for urban con-

sumers, the cost of living here is 176% more than the average American city. For real - the CPI-U for the average U.S. city is 179, versus Honolulu’s 495. Although that figure centers on the state’s largest city, Maui is just as (if not more) expensive than Oahu. Take gas, for example. Out of all fifty states, gas prices are highest here in the fiftieth, and on which island do we get gauged the worst? Welcome to the Valley Isle. Late March prices

for a gallon of regular unleaded averaged $2.30 in Wailuku – 60 cents more than the national average, 33 cents more than Honolulu’s average and 21 cents more than Hilo’s. Ouch.

As of this writing, Paia Chevron, the Dairy Road and Lahainaluna Shells, and the Kihei Chevron rang in at $2.26, which was the average price island-wide. One way to combat the gouge is to join the 20,000 other Maui consumers who use the Ohana Savers Card. This card enables customers to accumulate points on purchases and redeem the points at any and all of the participating businesses, which include the Dairy Road Shell, the West Maui Shell, and the Waiehu Shell. The card is free and is available at the following participating merchants: Ooka Supermarket, Pukalani Superette, Hamai Appliance, Marmac Ace Hardware, Standard Motors and Marine Supply, Home Maid Bakery, Wailuku Tire, Abbey Carpet, The Pet Shop, and the three above-mentioned Superstops (Shell Stations). For more information on the Ohana Savers Card, call 873-8080. Another way to save several bucks each fillup is to apply for a card from Hawaii Fueling Network, a division of Maui Petroleum, Inc. Once your application is approved, which takes a week or two, HFN issues you a card that you can use at nine stations in Kihei, Kahului, Wailuku, Puunene, Paia, Pukalani and Makawao. You are then billed monthly, just like a credit card. Currently, the HFN’s prices are about ten cents per gallon less than the going rate. Call HFN at 270-2802 or visit them at 385 Hukilike Street in Kahului.

COVER STORY

When you’re looking for cheap clothes and home furnishings, keep an eye out for school

bazaars, fundraisers, and community festivals. These events almost always offer lots of good finds. And don’t forget to check the classifieds in the back of this paper. In addition, there are a few good stores that are worth mentioning. An international chain of “cleaned up” thrift stores based in Bellevue, Washington, Savers has something for you whether you're eight months or eighty. It doesn’t get cheaper than this - almost everything is under $6 – because Savers stores carry secondhand merchandise bought from local nonprofits. Does David Fischer moonlight here when he’s not embalming? You’ve never seen such orderliness. Like biology’s Five Kingdom classification system (remember “kingdom, phylum, class, order…”?), Savers has its own system of organizing stuff by department, category, size, and color. In addition to clothes, it has a section of kitchen appliances, Tupperware, glassware, and chochkes. Tons of toys, too. Look for their daily 50% off specials and make out like a teen at the junior high dance. 326 Hanamau (corner of Alamaha), in Kahului. Open 10-6, 9-9, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 871-7244. Just a few blocks up the street from Savers, “Dress for Less” at Ross. An off-price retail chain started in the eighties, Ross offers firstquality, current name brand and designer apparel, accessories and footwear at 20% to 60% off department store prices. Good selection of alohawear for both sexes. Lots of trendy junior wear that with luck may survive the spin cycle, but not more than one season as a stylish garment. Better deals on upscale brands for women, including BCBG, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan and Jones of New York. Great shoes, both athletic, casual and formal. Ross is primarily a discount-clothing store, but its housewares are good too. The same large wicker laundry hamper for $19 at Ross sells for $40 at K-Mart. In the mood for a leopard-print ottoman? A Shakespeare bust? It has a strangely substantial and consistent collection of elegantly upholstered dining chairs. Otherwise, it’s fun to check what they’ve received lately, because new shipments arrive several times a week. Often crowded with longish register lines. Bring your patience Monday through Saturday, 9:00a.m.to 9:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 200 East Kamehameha in the Safeway Plaza. 877-5483. The Rainbow Attic is a well-organized consignment shop tucked away in the corner of the Foodland Shopping Center in Kihei. Great for not only furniture, but clothes, knickknacks, and toys. Their selection changes fairly frequently and has some pleasant surprises. I’m still kicking myself for not buying that eight-foot, intricately carved, antique mahogany bar complete with brass foot rail

and matching stools. Then again, who would get anything accomplished with that thing in the living room? Check out their 3,000 square foot store at 1881 South Kihei Road, 8740884. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., every day. When you’re Upcountry, stop in at Déjà Vu Consignment Boutique and its sister store, Carousel Country Store. Having opened both within the last year with great success, owner Pam Beck offers women’s clothes, shoes and accessories, as well as furniture, antiques, and collectibles. Déjà Vu’s number is 5734830; Carousel’s is 573-7616. Both are open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 81 Makawao Ave. in Pukalani. In Lahaina, Encore is the oldest consignment shop on Maui. It features women’s clothing, including swimwear, eveningwear, and accessories. Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10-3. 760 Wainee Ave. in the Lahaina Shopping Center, 661-5533. The Ka Lima Thrift Store is a popular gold mine offering everything from clothes to plants to kitchen sinks. Until they move into their new location at 250 Alamaha, you can find them on the first floor of the Cameron Center in Wailuku at 95 Mahalani St. Hours may change once they move, but for now are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. 244-9535. Last but not least is the reliable old standby, The Salvation Army. With three locations on the island (the Haiku one is no longer), you’re bound to find what you need, from couches to stereo speakers, and even stuff you don’t need, like a telescope to admire Maui’s incredible night sky. In the Kahului Shopping Center, 877-3074; in Kihei at 35 Halekuai, 875-8065; and in Lahaina (say hi to Keith or Rascal) on Shaw Street 661-0375. It’s been said the Lahaina one smells weird. Just keep telling yourself that the musty smell adds to the adventure, and wash your clothes before wearing to be on the safe side.

FURNITURE, FIRST & FOREMOST There are a surprising number of used furniture stores on the island. Unlike much of the lower-end items at K-Mart or Wal-Mart, at least the pre-owned stuff doesn’t have the personality of a barcode and doesn’t require a wasted afternoon of gluing and screwing together pieces of crappy particleboard. Second Chance Furniture, located off the Piilani Highway at 300 Ohukai Road, believes “all things deserve a second chance.” Their two floors are cramped with good stuff at very reasonable prices. Oil paintings, mirrors, glass tables, shoji screens. Open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 874-4885. Another consignment furniture haven is the Good Fortune Trading Company at 255 Alamaha in Kahului. Two floors of diverse furniture including a selection of Asian antiques and rattan. And if you choose to donate that fifties dinette set gathering dust in your garage, owners Katherine Acker and David Sylvester will send you off with a tax-deductible receipt and send the Maui Humane Society the proceeds when it sells. through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 877-4663. A few minutes’ drive away is a sanctuary of the most eclectic selection of used and antique furniture this writer’s found on Maui. Having started out eight years ago as a humble yard sale on the owner’s front lawn, Finders Keepers has risen from the grasses to occupy a gargantuous warehouse space easily found at 400 Hana Highway. Although many of their items are expensive, look amongst the high-end pieces for the cheap stuff that’s a bit shabbier, but still a good buy. Offers both indoor and outdoor bargains. Make sure to take an Alice-inWonderlandish trip to their restroom located through an antique armoire. Hours are Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekdays by appointment. 871-7000.

FOOD We’ve all heard the aghast reactions of firsttime Maui visitors when they learn a gallon of milk will set them back almost seven bucks. Without hawking your first-born or resorting to generic macaroni and cheese night after night, however, you can eat plenty well if you know where to go and how to shop. Let’s just get it out of the way that yes, “big box” retailers like Costco and Wal-Mart are evil, hostile, scary, and snuff out mom-andpop businesses in their wake of terror. Given this article’s topic, and in the pursuit of objective reporting, however, it must be mentioned that they offer good products for bottom dollar. It’s your choice whether or not to wrack up karmic debt to save your dough. That said… Some people assume you have to have a family the size of Carol and Mike Brady’s to reap the benefits of Costco. Not so. Try a finding a whole spit-roasted chicken cheaper than their price ($4.99), or their gigantic pizza that barely fits in the oven ($7.99, or $9.99 cooked to go). Their fresh garlic bread is onolicious and the many whole cloves baked right in will ward off mosquitoes better than Deep Woods Off. A membership is $35 per year for two people, so split it with a friend and cough up the $17.50. If you have the space and extra money, invest in a freezer to store those bulk purchases because Costco’s meat and seafood prices can’t be beat. It’s not a bad idea to bring a cooler to transport it home when meat warms to 40 °, its bacteria count can double in number in as little as 20 minutes. Eeeyooooo. Good prices in the optical department and for photo developing. Costco Wholesale is located at 540 Haleakala Highway. Unless you have a business or executive membership, regular hours are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 877-5241. If the Island of Misfit Toys had its equivalent in Food Shopping Land, the Grocery Outlet would be it. If you don’t mind eating the Christmas M&Ms in January, you’ll appreciate the deals here. It’s a clean, well-managed place with a strange yet adequate selection of items at rock bottom prices. When they opened in 2001, their stock was very limited but they’ve since added dairy, eggs, and frozen meats. Their secret to price war success? Buying manufacturers’ overstock and excess inventory. This store’s prices warrant exploring. Open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. 877-3308. Safeway stores are open 24 hours, 7 days, located at 170 E. Kamehameha in Kahului (877-3377); 277 Pi’ikea in Kihei (891-9120); and in Lahaina at 1221 Honoapiilani Highway (667-4392). DINING OUT WITH PRESIDENT HAMILTON Fast food is abundant and we all visit the drive-thru more than we should. There are many places that will fill you up for less than $10 that serve more than just burgers, slices, or tacos. Next time you drive by roadside vendors, stop and give them a try. Look for restaurants serving cheap and tasty plate lunches can be found all over the island. Food courts in the Lahaina Cannery Mall, the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, and Kau Kau Corner next to the Sports Authority on Dairy Road are great for inexpensive meals ranging from the cuisines of Vietnam to Greece to Mexico and almost everything in between. Look for advertised specials offering 50%-off nights, dollar-taco nights, late-night discounts, etc. Check the visitor magazines for coupons. The best way to find the deals is to ask someone who’s been on the island for a while. Word of mouth works best for learning what not to miss, and what to avoid.

KAMA’AINA DISCOUNTS It’s like looking for Mister or Miss Right. If you don’t try, you’ll never know how lucky you might get. Many businesses offer a discount to residents, but they don’t necessarily advertise this fact (like Honolua Surf Company and Maui Tropix, for example). If you have a Hawaii license, use it for more than driving. Almost all of the activities on Maui offer resident discounts. Why not go on a whalewatch, an ATV tour, or to a luau for a big price cut?

CHEAP THRILLS Being broke doesn’t have to equal melding into the couch. Did you know you could try a Masters Swimming workout for free? Or get a free Chess lesson? Or see free live music? Learn where to take acting classes, how to play a Japanese drum, find volunteer opportunities, toss Ultimate Frisbee, meet the mayor, try Kajukenbo, tour the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and find a playgroup for your keiki. There is a lot to do here on Maui with little cash, believe it or not. Check Maui Time’s Calendar listings in the back of each issue for things to do. When online, try www.calendarmaui.com. This is a gem of a site with extensive listings of cheap (if not free) events, activities, and meetings throughout the island. You can even do a search for only the listings that cost nothing. You can even request a reminder via email so you won’t forget to get off the couch.

The Best Place to Eat in Pa`ia is Now Your North Shore Night Spot

Kimura Saimin Shop I’ve been waiting for some time for a nice, gray, rainy day to visit Kimura’s Saimin Shop at the Haiku Cannery and warm my bones with a big, steaming bowl of broth. The weather finally broke the other day and I happily donned my wet weather gear (long sleeve T-shirt, jeans, and a pair of slippers to splash around in the puddles) and immediately headed off towards bustling, downtown Haiku. The rain is coming down in sheets as I duck into the simple, no-nonsense interior of the Kimura Saimin Shop. The room has an open kitchen divided from a double row of tables and benches by a low counter with seating available in the front. The menu is a model of efficiency with just six items: saimin with char siu, egg, and green onion (available in small, medium, or large), dry noodle with char siu, green onion, and bean sprouts, wet noodle (the dry noodle with saimin broth added), burgers, a teriyaki beef sandwich, and BBQ sticks or roast pork for $1.99. A small post-it note has been attached to the bottom advertising kim chee for fifty cents, and that makes me very happy. I settle in at a bench seat and open the latest Maui Time to catch up on events while the world outside slows to a hazy crawl. There are a few customers present, taking shelter from the rain with heads held low to seep in the rising saimin steam. It looks like just the therapeutic experience that I want, and I’m excited when my own bowl arrives. Sometimes it takes an intricately flavored gourmet meal to hit me in all the

right spots, but at other times a simple dish with fresh, honest ingredients can do the same kind of thing for me. This saimin is a perfect example with noodles that are handmade by a family-run operation in Paia that’s been around for years. They have a texture and flavor that put them several steps above a similar dried or frozen product, and they make all the difference here. The broth is clear and light and is garnished with chopped green onion, tender little bites of char siu, thin strips of scrambled egg, and a BBQ Beef skewer (I got the small bowl for $4.50). I came for the saimin but I can’t leave without sampling some of the other goods, so I order a dry noodle for $4.50 and a Teri sandwich for $1.99. Oh yeah, three sides of kim chee, too. The dry noodles are heaped high and garnished with char siu, bean sprouts, and green onion. They’re good but a little too subtle for me so I add a side of hot mustard, kim chee, and a healthy splash of shoyu and stir it all up. Now we’re talking. The Teri sandwich comes on a soft bun with a little mayo, lettuce, and good, flavorful Teriyaki beef, but it’s definitely a $1.99 portion. My little snack is good on its own, but my devious mind won’t let things be and I stuff the sandwich full of kim chee (which gets my Korean stamp of approval) and now I have a $2.50 work of art. The Kimura Saimin Shop has met my expectations and then some. It’s a quiet little family style place that’s perfect for relaxing and waiting out a storm, but don’t wait for the next one to come before you go and try them out. Good, wholesome food is a treasure that should be appreciated at all times.

WINE OF THE

WEEK

BY ANTHONY MOORE

Madonna Estate 2000 Chardonnay, Carneros $17.99 The wine of the week is the Madonna Estate 2000 Carneros organic Chardonnay. Carneros is a region next to the San Francisco bay that features morning fog and cool ocean breezes, which are conditions that Chardonnay thrives on. The owners of Madonna Estate, the Bartolucci family, are the third oldest winemaking family still making wine in the Napa Valley. They originally started in Oakville in 1913, but since have moved to the Carneros area in 1970, where they are focused on all estate vineyards of primarily Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and a little Reisling. For almost 80 years, Madonna Estate has been growing grapes organically. All of their grapes from the 160-acre estate vineyards are dry-farmed, organically grown and certified by the C.C.O.F. (California Certified Organic Farmers). Dry-farming is a technique that stresses the vines to produce less tons per acre and smaller berries for more intense varietal character. This bottling is an excellent value. It has a crisp, fresh start of green apple that leads to a nice butter-soft, long finish. Pair it up with your regular scarfings of seafood - preferably lobster, or if you can’t get the lobster, some cream-based pasta dishes. Enjoy!

Vince Sings The Blues To say that Vince Esquire is a “prodigy” is the understatement of the year - musical genius would be more like it. “When I was just a little kid,” commented Vince, “I use to bang on my mom’s pots and pans.” Rehearsing on his mom’s kitchen utensils subsequently got him a gig playing drums in his dad’s band. Guess what? Vince was only six years old at the time! He said he made about $20 or $30 for his performance - not bad for a six-year-old. Credit has to be given to Rudy (Vince’s dad) who passed on the musical gene to his son. He is an accomplished saxophone player in his own right. Born an only child in Oakland, CA, in 1985, Vince moved to Maui at the age of four with his parents. While still in diapers, Vince would hang around while his dad rehearsed in bands. At the age of 11 he started taking some lessons on the ukulele. He practiced playing with different CD’s and eventually learned to play along with them note for note. Vince then got together with two other teens and started playing coffeehouses and private parties. Vince’s interest in the guitar came about when he turned 15. He was watching the biography of blues legend, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, and was totally infatuated with his style and performance. After that he participated in every jam session and musical opportunity his school schedule would allow. In the summer of 2000, Vince attended the Jazz School in Berkeley, California, where he studied different forms of music but was really attracted to “the Blues”. He feverishly studied the older blues guitarists like B.B. King and T-Bone Walker and also the newer guitar players, such as Jimi Hendrix and Coco Montoya. The following year Vince returned to the Bay Area and played any local blues club that would hire him. While playing a gig at Chris’s Club in Vallejo, Calif. he caught the attention of Ronnie Stewart, President of the Bay Area Blues Society.

Because Stewart was so awed by Vince’s talent, he invited him to sit in his Bay Area Caravan of All Stars band. In May of 2002, Vince was invited back by the Bay Area Blues Society to play at the prestigious Oakland/Russell City and Siskiyou Blues Festivals. His performances received standing ovations. Last year Vince formed his own band that bears his name. The band features Willie K’s bassist, Don Lopez, Frank Lightner on drums, occasionally his dad Rudy on sax, and of course, Vince on lead guitar and vocals. While playing in a club in Wailuku called Molina’s, in June of 2002, Vince was approached by a gentleman named Miles Busby, who after putting a $100 in the tip jar, said those magic words that would make a dream come true. He was so taken aback by Vince’s talent, he offered to completely finance Vince’s first CD. “A lot of people approach me and ask if I need a manager or something,” said Vince, “but I felt something genuine about him. He kept his promise and with no strings attached.” Mr. Busby is the President of Source Technologies, a computer software manufacturing company in North Carolina. Vince continued to say that when Mr. Busby was just starting out in his business, someone helped him get to where he is today and he wanted to give back by helping someone else succeed. Vince’s CD, First Offense, came out a few months ago and is doing great partly because of the playtime it is getting on Mana’o radio. Mark Epstein, who toured and recorded with blues legend Johnny Winter, produced and played on Vince’s CD. “Mark not only helped me with the musical side of my career,” said Vince, “but also showed me the business side and how to take care of myself on the road.” The CD also features Vito Liuzzi on drums and Jeff Levine on the Hammond Organ. In early March, Vince went to Austin, Texas, where he attended the influential South by Southwest Music Festival. This event is one of the most highly regarded blues festivals in the country, and allowed Vince to be seen on a national scale. Recently I had the opportunity to see this

BATHROOM BANTER Friday at 7:30pm, Gallerie Ha in Wailuku. A perfect anecdote of the answer to the question, “Why is she/he taking so long in there?!” - “The Bathroom Documents” is a performance highlighting the conversations between men and women that take place in various public restrooms.

CELEBRATE POETRY Vince Esquire young musical genius in his element at Mulligan’s On the Blue in Wailea. The place was packed to the hilt and the joint was jumping! Vince had the audience in the palm of his hand. When I looked at him, I saw a 17-year-old teenager, but yet I felt like I was listening to an older, more seasoned musician. It’s as if an old blues legend was reincarnated into Vince’s body. In the audience I noticed two young kids who didn’t take their eyes off of Vince for a minute. It’s very rare that kids so young would be the least bit interested in blues music. After talking to them, I discovered that they were avid followers of Vince. Rohan Arora, 14 years old, has been playing the guitar for four years. He told me that Vince sounds older than he is and also has an amazing voice. Kiran, Rohan’s brother, who plays the harmonica, was equally blow away by Vince. “He plays with such passion and emotion,” he said. You can pick up Vince’s CD at Borders, Request Music in Wailuku, and Maui Music at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Mall. You can also order CDs and get more information on Vince’s future gigs on his website, vinceesquire.com. I asked Vince what his present goal is. “I would love to tour for the next six months and push my CD,” he concluded. That little boy who use to beat on pots and pans has come a long way in such a short time. When Vince someday earns that coveted title “blues legend”, we can all say we knew him when! Join Vince on Sat., April 12th, from 9:30pm-midnight for his CD release party at the Hard Rock Café.

7pm Friday, at Borders in Kahului. Poetry has a reputation for being somewhat intimidating. It’s all about how the complexities of language can be presented in a way that procures a sense of relatability, and I can definitely vouch for the inspiring level set by Sara Backer & Eric Shaffer as they read together in celebration of National Poetry Month.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN Saturday at Ka Lae Pohaku Beach (across the road from Suda’s store), Kihei. It’s the start of the season with the Kihei Canoe Club’s 20th Annual Maui Paddlers Open. A Hawaiian tradition slathered in community spirit, and a total mind-body connection to the sea, canoe paddling encompasses all that is inherently wonderful about living in beautiful Maui.

BY COLE SMITHEY

Vin Diesel's Other Movie Revenge Potboiler Leaves Ethics Out ) A Man Apart ( "A Man Apart" is a moderately entertaining revenge potboiler for leading man Vin Diesel to get in touch with his inner Dirty Harry as Drug Enforcement Administration agent Sean Vetter. Vetter is a hardened maverick cop who collars egomaniacal Mexican drug lord Memo Lucero (Geno Silva - "Mulholland Drive"), who in turn exacts revenge by sending assassins to kill Vetter and his wife Stacy (Jacqueline Obradors - TV's "NYPD Blue"). Vetter survives the assassination attempt and spends the predictable rest of the movie subverting the power of his badge to bring down the encroaching "Diablo" drug gang and the men responsible for his wife's death. Filmed between

Diesel's "The Fast and the Furious" and "xXx", "A Man Apart" serves as a link in the development of the actor's slow-burn action hero persona that is fast becoming a Hollywood cottage industry. Director F. Gary Gray ("The Negotiator") has made a star vehicle action movie that judiciously pits flashy shoot 'em up action sequences against detailed attention to nuance of physicality and dialogue. But such gracious attention to minutiae of character and atmosphere finds itself upstaged by the same sentimental buttons Gray seems to want to avoid when Vetter breaks character to seize some shortsighted revenge during a delicate drug bust operation. The moment that Vetter starts seeing permanent red at society's expense, the

story shifts into a personal vendetta scenario that the audience hasn't been fully prepared to follow because there's too much at stake beyond Vetter's deceased wife. Sean Vetter's voice-over narration introduces the movie with sexy data about the many tons of cocaine smuggled into America every month. Cocaine that could supply every man, woman and child with their own individual line of the powdery narcotic. As such, we're introduced to Vetter as a voice of moral and ethical decision-making that will shepherd us to safe harbor in spite of whatever temptation is being wagered. We know that a sense of personal revenge will induce our hero to lash out, but we're led to believe that he has a handle on the social and personal depth of the waters in

which he swims. But since we don't observe the assassins' motivation as anything other than an order passed down from their inscrutable crime boss Memo Lucero, we're never given sufficient context to justify Vetter's hair-trigger temper that ruins an operation and leaves several cops dead. Revenge films are a genre unto themselves, and movies like "Straw Dogs", "Death Wish", "Ms. 45" and "I Spit On Your Grave" each carry a mark of uncomfortable complicity with their audience because their plots carefully prepare the spectators to see the world through their angry victim's eyes. But Sean Vetter is hardly a victim, and however emotionally damaged he is by his wife's death, he's too cavalier with his crime fighting tactics to carry the burden to such an extreme without separating his motives. When Sean finally visits Stacy's gravesite toward the end of the film, it means much less than it would have, had he gone before he took it upon himself to get careless with the lives of other people around him. "A Man Apart" is a broadly non-political film about a very political issue, and a personal film with an impersonal objective. The mundane social conditions that breed law enforcement officials to reach beyond the arm of the law for personal power are the same callused stimulus used by politicians to crush vast sectors of societies with morally bankrupt policies. Sean Vetter is an impotent protector and an irrational vengeance seeker who exposes the people nearest to him with unseen dangers in order to pursue his own narrow agenda. Critics labeled both "Straw Dogs" and "Death Wish" as fascist films when they were released for their deliberately disquieting depictions of machismo prejudice. I personally don't view either of those films as fascist per se, but I do perceive the nationalist ambivalence inherent in a film like "A Man Apart", in which only a self-serving individual is capable of bringing down a drug lord.

DIFFICULTLISTENING

BY TANG LI WHEEBS & THE MOLE

SOFT PINK TRUTH: DO YOU PARTY? (Soundslike, www.matmos.net)

ent m in a rt te n E e iv L d o o F l Exceptiona

One half of the dynamic duo Matmos (Bjork’s touring beat providers) goes solo for a bit and tries his hand at making a house album. I don’t really like much house music. It is usually pretty bland and boring stuff. But Drew Daniel is not an ordinary man and with “Do You Party?” he delivers a nice gem of a tech-house album. As an added bonus, this album features some the best uses of vocal samples that I have heard in a long time. Full of funky clicks and cuts this album has its sights both on your booty and your sense of good taste. Amen. [Tang Li Wheebs] I don't normally listen to house music ‘cause I don't like most of what I've heard, but I actually like a lot of the stuff on this album. Very catchy and not too wussy. [The Mole]

Jazz, Blues, R&B Jazz, Blues, R&B DEERHOOF: APPLE O’ (Kills Rock Stars, www.deerhoof.com)

Short. Cute. Fun. Noisy. Outbursts. Loud. Soft. Quirky. Sweet. Casio. Singsong. Childlike. Part Japanese. Part American. Male. Female. Love. Sex. Panda. Panda. Panda. Buy. Buy. Buy. Enjoy! [Tang Li Wheebs] Wow - you're a bigger dork than I realized, Tang Li. Anyway, I've seen this band live, and the drummer knocked my socks off. I think he has ADD or some other disorder that makes him super-jumpy and excited. He kept breaking drumsticks and knocking down his drums ‘cause he would get so frenzied. It was really entertaining. Compared with their live show, Deerhoof's recordings don't excite me as much, mainly ‘cause I can't watch the crazy drummer, but I think it's pretty tasteful and creative music. [The Mole]

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL

Following Grand Buffet's last album, which was comprised solely of classic rock karaoke songs, Cigarette Beach is a return to the duo's signature sound of hip-hop beats made out of techno/electro samples topped with nutty rapping. The two members, Grape-A-Don and Lord Grunge, a.k.a. Mr. Pennsylvania, have a very fresh approach to lyricism, mixing the ridiculous with the poetic. Songs such as "Barbecue Glove" are funny, including lines like, "outfits I wear at night raise the Fahrenheit," but Grand Buffet also exhibit maturity by constructing their phrasings in a way that challenges traditional thought and writing. For example, "Start Smoking (What Up, Gold)" includes the phrase, "we're making castles out of mentholated nicotine sand," which is literally nonsensical but subtly uses humor and imagery in order to evoke an emotional reaction. The emotion it evokes is something like bewildered entertainment, i.e. a common reaction to this music would be a slack-jawed grin asking, "What the fuck?" Ha - I used the F-word! I guess I might as well take advantage of our freedom of speech while we've still got it. Anyway, this EP is probably hard to find but you can order it for $10 at www.grandbuffet.com [The Mole] Having just seen these guys rock Seattle with Sole I now understand them and that is good thing. Funny, smart and rather silly, they do some great stuff that will keep you wanting more. Laugh a little, okay? [Tang Li Wheebs]

STEPHEN MALKMUS: PIG LIB (Matador, www.stephanmalkmus.com) The second album from former Pavement frontman, Stephan Malkmus, is a wonderful collection of fun listening. Gone is the whimsical tone of his 2001 release, but in its place we get an album that sounds like a real band feeling comfortable at what they are doing. Full of a lot more changes and surprises, this album is a real treat. I hear a lot of Lou Reed-influenced phrases in the songwriting and quite a bit of slightly strange images lurk in the lyrics, which might put some listeners off at first, but I can’t seem to stop listening. For an album that I didn’t expect much from, this is a rather nice outcome. [Tang Li Wheebs] A little too normal for me. I don't dislike it, but I don't really like it either. [The Mole]

RETURN TO BENDER

ARIES: The things you value will become more

I met an amazing guy. We have yet to go out, but we've been e-mailing and calling each other. Early this week, I went out with friends, had a wild, drunken night, and called him at 3 a.m. I don't recall what I said, and I'm mortified. The next morning, I e-mailed him to apologize, but never heard back. He always e-mails or calls back, and right away! I need to know how to doctor this situation, because he's so wonderful, I don't want to lose him. Drunk Dialer It's great if the guy you like is fantasizing about you - providing he isn't picturing you face down in the gutter, or doing Jell-O shots and stripping your top off for the boys in the bar. You blew it. What the guy is telling you, "If The Phone Don't Ring It's Me"-style, is that he saw the future staggering toward him, and he decided to duck out of the way. "Friends don't let friends drive drunk." They shouldn't let friends dial drunk either, but what are they supposed to do - take away your fingers? If only you could hook your phone up to a Breathalyzer, so you'd have to blow sober to get a dial tone. Unfortunately, you can't count on friends, bartenders, or nifty technology to pick up where personal responsibility falls off the barstool. In lieu of reliable surrogates, the role of round-the-clock blood-alcohol nanny will have to be filled by you. Since you haven't mentioned being in the habit of giving your Fruity Pebbles a bath in warm beer, or proclaiming Clinique toner "refreshing on a cotton ball or on the rocks!" it probably isn't time to have yourself bundled into a car trunk and driven to Betty Ford. That said, spending even one night getting so soaked that you wash away the guy you want is a sign - if not of a serious drinking problem - that you have a serious problem drinking. There are people and programs around every corner to tell you how to stick to Sprite with a Sprite chaser for the rest of your life - perfect for someone with only two choices: pulling up a chair at the AA meeting or being pulled out of a steel drawer at the morgue. Occasional lushes like you might benefit more from the personal responsibility approach advocated in the books, "Alternatives To Abstinence," by Heather Ogilvie, and "The Truth About Addiction And Recovery," by Stanton Peele, Ph.D., and Archie Brodsky. Instead of having you sit in a circle of chain-smokers, clutching a sobriety token until your fingers bleed, they advise that you: •Figure out why you get tanked. •Ask yourself whether getting tanked is solving your problems, or just giving them lots of company. •Consider why it makes more sense to acknowledge your problems than to try to hold them down until they lose consciousness in a vat of cheap gin. Ultimately, you'll need to figure out where your personal fill-line is, and come up with a plan to stop yourself from ordering a double when you hit it. Once you turn up the jets on your willpower and consciousness, you might get to the point where you can go out drinking without drowning your troubles - just let them do a few laps of the backstroke, then dry them off and take them home. Ironically, there's no better motto for moderation than the words of excess expert Mick Jagger: "It's okay letting yourself go as long as you can let yourself back."

evident to you this week. The weekend looks good for short trips and impromptu get-togethers with friends. You may be tempted to go on a spending spree. Purchase only the essentials. TAURUS: Your love for friends and co-workers is on the rise. Contacts you make now have a certain karmic significance. Making friends out of enemies and strangers is one of the most powerful statements of peace you could make. GEMINI: People want to get to know you. Be more available for social contacts and community events. What does real freedom mean to you? You are ready to relate to others on a light-hearted level. Some relationships start out light but end up being deep. CANCER: As you take on more responsibility don't forget where your roots are. This weekend you will learn something about your spiritual karma. Write down your dreams before breakfast. Find a positive quality in someone you normally associate with evil. LEO: See yourself as the lucky learner. Offer your seat to an older person if all the seats are full. Acts of kindness possess an extra dose of magic during this period. Some times generosity means allowing other people to win. VIRGO: Embracing your dark side can be a scary prospect. Find the good and praise it. Don't waste your time fighting. Allow yourself to be wrong. Through our brokenness and suffering does real healing emerge. When you're tired of hurting, you’re ready for mending. LIBRA: I'm relying on you to get both sides of the issues talking with each other. Blessed are the peacemakers. You are the #1 peacemaker during times of conflict. You know the difference between carrying a shield and carrying a weapon. You're also a hot lover. SCORPIO: Visit someone in prison, a hospital, or a rest home. Offer people that are down a meal, help with chores or a gift to uplift them. Work your own body with long walks, yoga, and by giving and receiving massages. Restore a sense of trust. SAGITTARIUS: Life continues to get tastier and tastier. You're inspired by creative ideas. Your family encourages you to follow your heart. The weekend looks good for romantic pursuits. Honor the playful games that children love. CAPRICORN: The cosmic waters of imagination are bidding you to take a dip. Your dreams contain potent messages. Ask your ancestors for help, especially in decisions that effect other family members. Good communication will help your presentation. AQUARIUS: Now that you have all the excitement you can handle, seize the day and promote your cause amongst the locals. You have the power to be a real friend. Poetry and prose will flow from your lips. Make a solar oven and cook a meal to share. PISCES: Being able to have restraint may not be as easy as it sounds. You are deeply affected by world events during this time. Take time out for a good comedy. Getting together with others and sharing a meal is a good way to preserve your highest values. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Colin Powell 4/5/37, David Frost 4/7/39, Dennis Quaid 4/9/54
