What does "Support the Troops" really mean? Does it mean building and supporting international alliances with powerful and experienced countries willing to share war costs and cover our backs while at risk in a foreign land far, far away? Does it mean working hard and compromising when necessary to build consensus with the UN Security Council and General Assembly, so we have the security of world support and agreement with our actions? Does it mean selling the war convincingly to the American people until the soldiers know their families and friends are behind them 95% to 100% - that the public knows exactly what the issues, objectives and long-term plans are, and that they are certain there is no peaceful way left to proceed? Or does it mean stomping out of the UN in a huff if we can't have our own way, when we want it - calling allied nations names and making mean jokes about countries that disagree with us - insisting on going it alone with a faithful companion, while overlooking the 80% of the English and Spanish public who are opposed to the war? Does it mean ignoring the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators for peace at home, arresting them if they become too insistent - and ordering the troops forward into a dangerous invasion while the home country is divided? Does it mean using the fact we are now suddenly at war to push Congress into passing a "spend and borrow" budget that gives more huge tax cuts to the rich (on top of the $1.35 trillion given in 2001), while cutting Medicaid, veterans programs, student loans, school lunches, child care, food stamps, cash assistance for the elderly and disabled poor, and many other programs and doing this without even including the cost of the war in the budget? Does it mean acting in a way that enrages even moderate Muslim clerics to the point they condemn America? Does it mean refusing to talk to North Korea while they work themselves into a fever for war? Support common sense and the Constitution. The troops were fine until this unsupportable administration was fictitiously elected. -Daniel Grantham, Haiku

This is for that loser bitch from Northern California! What's got your panties in a bunch? Maybe if you spent more time educating yourself about our island, and not "engaging in conversations" in pool halls, you would find that not all Maui men and surfers are burnouts and players. I am a Maui man and surfer, and like most of us, we are respectful members of our community with jobs and families. Did you have a

thought, that maybe you got the response that you may have asked for, my little princess? By the tone of your letter, it doesn't sound like it would be too hard for you and your friends, to put on the "bitch front". For most rejected women like yourself, it seems to come naturally. We really don't need your kind of mentality around our young children and on our beautiful island. As far as you and your friends go...tell us where we can send you bitches each a one way ticket back to where you belong amongst your own kind, never to be smelt again! -Alooooooha! Da Bruddahs, via email

PLEASE HELP MANA'O RADIO We don't usually write letters to the paper, but we had to do something! We assumed Mana'o radio was doing well because they are constantly saying "Mahalo" to those who have donated since they began a year ago. But the reality is they have not received the contributions they need on an ongoing basis, and they really need our help. If you have enjoyed our wonderful public radio station, Mana'o radio (KEAO-LP 91.5 FM), you will want to know this information to help preserve this incredible music station for all of us on Maui to enjoy. If you live on a part of the island that does not get Mana'o radio, you will be happy to know that you can now pick them up on the worldwide web at http://www.manaoradio.com <http://www.manaoradio.com/> Incidentally, "mana'o" is a Hawaiian word which means, "thought, idea, opinion, theory, meaning, mind; to think, suppose, meditate, deem, consider". Mana'o radio plays an incredible mix of music, from timeless classics, blues and jazz of the 20's and 30's, right up to today's best music. There is something for everyone; and an unbelievable and entertaining music education for us all. The DJ's are an eclectic group of musicians and performers, many of whom are well known on Maui. These dedicated people run this great station "gratis"; depending entirely on public support. We can't imagine not having Mana'o radio in our lives, so to that end, our family is pledging $50.00 a month in continued support, and we hope everyone who loves this great station will join us in sending whatever you can afford on a regular basis to keep Mana'o radio on the air to make Maui a better place for us all. -Mary and Charlie Dungans, Kula

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

SURE, NOW YOU SAY YOU'RE SORRY First, it was Tim Robbins complaining about the violation of his freedom of speech rights when the ceremony commemorating the release of his film Bull Durham was canceled by baseball's Hall of Fame. Now, the Dixie Chicks are complaining that it's their Constitutional rights that are in jeopardy because radio stations won't play their music due to comments they made about President Bush awhile back. Welcome to the world of Freedom of Speech, ladies. It all started when Dixie Chick Natalie Maines got up onstage at a London concert and told the gathered crowd that, "Just so you all know, we're ashamed that President Bush is from Texas." And that was all it took. Radio stations were lit up by protesting listeners. The stations immediately went on the offensive by inviting listeners to get together and trash their albums at the studio. Fans promised boycotts of their upcoming U.S. tour, and 24-hour security was needed outside the home of Maines. The thing is, it's not about freedom of speech, or the lack thereof. It's not about saying the Dixie Chicks don't have the freedom to speak their mind. The Dixie Chicks have all the right in the world to say what they think. The thing is, along with the freedom to speak your mind comes the responsibility for what is being said. People are boycotting the Dixie Chicks because the Chicks stood up onstage at an event that was non-political and they made it political. Once they crossed that barrier and became "politi-

cians" instead of entertainers, the 73% of Americans that support President Bush withdrew their support of the Dixie Chicks. Is it an unfortunate side occurrence? Yes, but there's a big difference between stifling free speech and withdrawing your support from someone you don't agree with. And the thing is, it's not that they disagreed with President Bush. It's that they stood up on a stage in another country, a country that was already a good deal skeptical of our intentions to begin with. Sure, the Dixie Chicks can speak their mind, but if speaking their mind means going against two-thirds of American society at a time when patriotism is at a fever pitch, then they are ignorant and foolish for being surprised at the backlash. And that is something that other anti-war individuals need to realize. When you speak an opinion that is different from over 70% of those around you, do not expect to be welcomed with open arms. Sorry, Dixie Chicks, but this was not another Vietnam. The peace protesters are not going to win this one.

RANDOM THOUGHTS Benjamin James Johnson, a 27-year-old engineer for Fox in Iraq, was charged with stealing 12 Iraqi paintings and 40 Iraqi bonds and smuggling them into the U.S. Now, this is a network that employed Geraldo Rivera, but do you think they're going to give Mr. Johnson any airtime? Doubt it. And now that the war is over, be prepared for the slack in the journalistic feeding frenzy centered on Iraq to be filled with a SARS frenzy. This thing is serious, but how serious is anyone's guess. And you can expect the media to help you along with that guesswork. MTW

Kayaking In Dangerous Waters Kayaking along the beautiful coast of Maui’s most southern point, La Perouse Bay, has become increasingly popular with the tourists and a major moneymaker for kayaking companies. But harsh weather conditions such as strong winds and rough surf, mixed with irresponsible actions by kayak tour guides, have led to several rescues recently. Maui resident Margaret Kearney had a close call two months ago when she and her two friends visiting from the Mainland went kayaking. After one of her friends was badly scraped against the rugged rocks and both nearly drowned, Kearney said it is obvious to her that the kayak companies care more about money than the safety of the guests. “We rented two double kayaks for $10 each and were told briefly that the winds might pick up, but we were never given a safety briefing or any instructions on what to do if we got into trouble,” she said. “The guy said we could follow behind his tour so we would be with a group, but that he would prefer we didn’t because he would then have to wait for us and take us back to our car. He seemed quite put out by that option and we just went on our own.” The winds did pick up as they were returning and with the conditions drastically changing within minutes, her friends’ kayak flipped. Another kayak company heard their screams and came to the rescue, but not before the kayak was pounded against the rocks and her two friends fought to stay afloat for almost 30 minutes. “Luckily they both were rescued in time and walked away with scrapes and bruises only,” she said. “When we told the kayak owner what happened, he was worried more about the condition of his kayak than if my friends were O.K., and he offered no concern or apologies.” One kayak tour operator, who asked to

remain anonymous for this article, has been kayaking La Perouse Bay for many years and said he is fed up with incidences like this. He said there is a general disregard for people’s safety, a lack of respect for the environment and an unfriendly attitude among competitors, making some intervention on the part of the state necessary to improve the conditions for all users. “I’m not saying I do everything perfectly, but I really try to put my customers’ safety first. I always check the Web every morning to get an accurate report of the wind and surf. La Perouse Bay is unprotected and when those winds pick up, it’s really easy to start drifting out to Kahoolawe if you’re not careful,” he said. “I also keep my numbers lower so I can watch everyone. And I am current in my CPR and First Aid, and go out on the tours with my guests, in case anything goes wrong.” He said some tour companies can bring in up to 60 guests in a day, making it impossible for the guides to closely supervise everyone. And rarely will companies cancel their tours even when extreme weather conditions are predicted, placing their customers in danger. Kayaks are being rented illegally on the spot and different owners and guides are constantly fighting with one another. Signs have been stolen, a car has been keyed, fistfights have taken place in front of customers, and a restraining order has been issued, he said. “It is out of control,” he said. “My goal is to figure out how we can all come to a positive workmanship along with protecting the natural resources. It would be a shame to not be able to share this amazing area with the visitors of Hawaii.” He said he would like to see permits issued to those who can be responsible, take safety precautions and respect the environment. A limit on how many guests per company would also increase safety and lessen the impact on the surroundings. All tour guides should also have to be current in First Aid, CPR and water safety certificates. And the State Department of Land &

Natural Resources (DLNR) has recognized the problem and is taking steps to implement both short term and long term solutions, said Cheryl Vann of Friends of Keone’o’io, a grassroots coalition of people concerned with the human impact on La Perouse Bay. “We have been documenting the situation out at La Perouse closely because of the increased need for the protection of resources, human safety issues, and the upset residents who have voiced their frustration with the commercial operators taking up so much space,” she said. “It has turned into a free-for-all and we have gathered specific data that will help the state assess the problems and find solutions.” The DLNR already revised its rules and regulations for La Perouse in November to help eliminate confusion and now it is necessary to have a permit to operate any commercial business, she said. But that won’t officially go into effect until a permitting process is set in place. And onsite solicitation has always been illegal, yet some operators consistently choose to ignore this. She said representatives from DLNR came out a couple weeks ago to walk the site and see some of the problems for themselves. They will be back sometime next month to have a meeting with the kayak tour operators. “The meeting will give the kayak operators a chance to agree upon some things they can all do to make it safer and lessen the impact such as smaller groups, more guides, cut down unloading time, and shuttle the guests to sites,” she said. “And hopefully the outcome will make it safer for visitors and protect the resources without limiting use too much. If you’re here, be here responsibly.” And she said that even though some operators have taken the initiative to make improvements, a formal written contract is needed so everyone can be held accountable. “It is in the operators’ best interest to work together, put greed aside and control this situation,” she said. “Because if the resources are degraded they will be out of business anyway.”

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES At the height of the war in Iraq, Army chaplain Lt. Josh Llano, 32, a Southern Baptist, commandeered 500 gallons of water to fill his baptismal pool at Camp Bushmaster near Najaf and offered exhausted, grimy soldiers a chance for a refreshing dip, provided they agreed to formal baptisms following a 90-minute sermon. Llano told a Miami Herald reporter: "It's simple. They want water. I have it, as long as they agree to get baptized." (The Army's chief of chaplains said he would investigate.)

HYPERACTIVE SENIORS WITH GUNS Wilma Bennett, 79, carrying a .22-caliber revolver and increasingly agitated at having to wait in line at a grocery store, was arrested after brawling with a 31-yearold security guard who tried to calm her down (Akron, Ohio, January). Gertrude Raines, 84, was charged with shooting her son-in-law dead at 200 yards in the midst of a longstanding family feud (Murfreesboro, Ark., January). Deer hunter Clinton Hurlbut, 89, pleaded guilty to reckless use of a gun after accidentally shooting the horse that a 12-year-old girl was riding (Browns Valley, Minn., November). On the bright side, J.C. Adams, 74, owner of a Pac A Sac convenience store that was being robbed, propped himself up on his walker and fired his shotgun at the three perps, killing one, wounding another and causing the third to flee (Decatur, Ga., January).

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US In Lufkin, Texas, in January, Cody Carver, 19, was sentenced to eight years in prison for impregnating a 13-year-old girl but continued to insist that he and the girl could raise their child "if the world would only back off." The girl's mother knew the pair were sleeping together, according to a Child Protective Services report, but since she herself had had a baby at age 14, and her mother had had a baby at 14, and her grandmother had had a baby at 14, she thought there was nothing unusual. In a polygraph test, Carver admitted that his sexual partners had included two other underage girls, as well as a dog.

President Gore: A Look Back A Visit to an Alternative Universe Few political observers anticipated the widespread resentment that followed Al Gore's controversial assumption of the presidency in December 2000. "The U.S. Supreme Court merely adhered to the Constitution when it refused to hear Bush's appeal of the Florida ruling," notes a Harvard law professor now living in exile in France. "Federal courts have no jurisdiction over election disputes, which in the United States are a state matter." Although the ensuing recount ultimately gave Florida to Gore by a comfortable thousand-vote margin, Republicans refused to accept the results. Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh continued to refer to Gore as "Vice President Gore" and "Resident-in-Chief" and listed the time remaining in Gore's first term as "days left in captivity for the American people." Republican candidate George W. Bush, meanwhile, refused to concede defeat. "Make no mistake," the former Texas governor declared from self-proclaimed "internal exile" in Crawford, Texas, "that man will never be my president." The GOP filed a slew of lawsuits challenging the election results, and right-wing militia groups issued dark threats about overthrowing Gore's "illegal junta." Despite Gore's attempts to govern from the center - he appointed several Republicans to his cabinet, including Secretary of Defense Colin Powell Congressional Republicans and their conservative Democratic allies stonewalled early Gore Administration attempts to deliver on key campaign promises. The Senate refused to ratify the Kyoto treaty on global warming. Bills to slash federal taxes for poor and middle-class workers, ban oil drilling in national wildlife refuges and crack down on corporate crime failed to make it out of Republican-controlled committees in the House. Senator Trent Lott let the President know that he could expect more of the same in the future: "It is my party's duty to represent the 48 percent of the voters who did not support Al Gore, and that's exactly what we're going to do," he said. Gore's polls, already falling due to the lagging economy, hit rock bottom in the weeks after the September 11th attacks. "People rightly blamed the Commanderin-Chief for not doing anything to intercept planes that had clearly been hijacked and for ignoring warnings of an imminent threat," says a GOP pollster. "But concern about incompetence quickly segued into the 'wimp thing.' Disgust at Gore's cowardice became widespread when he abandoned Washington to the terrorists and flew off to hide in that silo under Nebraska. Diligent journalists then reminded Americans how he'd wussed out of Vietnam by joining the Tennessee Air National Guard and then

going AWOL, and for many voters that was that." In a bizarre and cynical ploy to exploit 9-11, the President attempted to turn things around by dispatching troops to one war after another - and made a mess of each one. Choosing to ignore Pakistan's role as chief host and financier of Al Qaeda, Gore waged a strange too-little-too-late bombing campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden escaped. Night after night David Letterman mocked Gore's pledge to capture the Saudi dissident: "Dead or alive? Shuck and jive is more like it." Gore's lack of military experience led him to go along with CIA schemes to bribe Afghan warlords. "From the Afghan perspective, the warlords were even worse than the Taliban," says an expert on Central Asia. "They should have bombed both." In 2002 The New York Times revealed that oil companies with close political connections to the Democratic Party had schemed with Gore to run an oil pipeline across Afghanistan from Turkmenistan to Pakistan - and that this was why he had attacked Afghanistan and cozied up with the Pakistani dictatorship. Incredibly, the next move of the man dubbed "Gore out of control" by Fox News was to declare an unprovoked war on Iraq. "Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction, he's an evil dictator and he's a threat to world peace," Gore railed to a joint session of Congress. When the United Nations refused to support Gore's request for an international coalition, even Congressional Democrats decided that they had had enough of their bellicose leader, and joined their counterparts across the aisle. "There's no proof that Saddam Hussein has WMDs," declared Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. "Until that changes, we have no grounds for a preemptive strike - an act that violates every precept of international law." Nonetheless, Gore relied on the War Powers Act to order in the Marines. As we know, Saddam Hussein didn't use nuclear, biological or chemical weapons to defend his dying regime. American forces never found any. And news soon began leaking that Gore was awarding lucrative Iraqi rebuilding contracts to oil companies that had contributed to his 2000 campaign. A Gallup poll showed that 88 percent of Americans considered Gore a liar, and that 79-percent favored his removal from office and prosecution for the wanton murder of thousands of Iraqis. As Iraq degenerated into sectarian violence amid growing signs of a possible radical Islamic revolution, Gore brazenly categorized the mayhem he had wrought on an innocent people as liberation. "They don't know it yet," he proclaimed, "but they'll thank us for this someday." What will it take for the American people to turn this madman out on his ear once and for all? It's impossible to say. As things stand now, he could put babies on the White House menu and claim he was fighting overpopulation. MTW

VEGETABLE OIL SAVES THE WORLD Fighting For Oil Seems Silly When We Have Biodiesel By Lawrence Taylor WHAT’S WRONG WITH OIL? One poll, taken just before we began the war with Iraq, indicated that over 35% of the American people mistakenly believed the reason the U.S. was invading Iraq was because Saddam Hussein and henchmen were responsible for the 9/11 attack. Now, while there has been a lot of evidence that Saddam and crew were treacherous murderers and needed to be removed from control, there was never any disclosed evidence linking Iraq to the 9/11 attack. On the other side of opinion and belief, there are masses of people around the world who believe the reason for the U.S. invasion of Iraq is to siphon off whatever is possible from the second largest oil reserve in the world.

While the jury may still be out on the truth of the matter, there are some compelling facts that oil was at least part of the reason we are now in the Middle East. In June of last year, the Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham, speaking on the administration’s policies towards U.S. oil dependency before the House of Representatives, Committee on International Relations, said, “We are committed to ensuring that America's energy needs are not held hostage by politically unstable foreign suppliers.” The Secretary of Energy also noted: - Oil currently accounts for close to 40% of total U.S. energy consumption;

- 52% of the oil we use in America is imported from foreign sources; - Forecast suggests that our dependence on imports could grow to 62% by 2020. Americans might as well face it; we’re addicted to oil. In America’s quest to maintain a stable economy, our government attempts to keep a continuous flow of oil, at a minimum price, into America. Americans enjoy the most affordable oil prices in the world as they gobble up over 25% of the world’s total daily oil production. Even as the demand for oil continues to rise, bumped ever higher by the growing prosperity of emerging markets like China and India, America thirsts for oil like no other.

In reference to the role the Middle East plays in oil pricing and supply, the Secretary of Energy went on to note: - Crude oil prices are determined by the world's excess oil production capacity; - Middle East OPEC countries have about 83% of excess world oil production capacity and the lowest production costs in the world in addition to two-thirds of the world’s proven conventional oil reserves; - Today we get about 25% of our imported oil from the Middle East. The limited reserves of petroleum, around the world, have led to increased competition and control over these precious resources. Dependable production and delivery of oil is of primary concern to governments and industry. Recently, America felt the pinch from a decline in their oil supply, not from the Middle East, but from Nigeria and Venezuela who provide more than 12% and 5% of America’s daily oil consumption, respectively. Whether we know it or not, as the reserves of oil continue to deplete by millions of barrels a day, America’s SUV owners want greater control over oil flow into the U.S. But more to the point, the world is running out of oil. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the Earth could hold as much as 2.1 trillion barrels of crude oil – only enough to supply the world with oil for the next 63 to 95 years. Others, however, are less optimistic and expect the world to exhaust its supply of oil in as few as 30 years. In either case, it is expected that extracting oil in the future will get more expensive as the supply dwindles and more effort and technology is needed to siphon those last drops. It is becoming increasingly more important that countries either control the flow of oil, establish strong relationships with oil producing countries to ensure oil imports or find alternate sources for energy. One can guess, hypothesize, assume or otherwise speculate on the truth of why we are at war, but there is no question that we are running out of oil and Iraq has plenty of it, for

REGION now. But that’s not the only problem with oil.

THE OTHER PROBLEMS WITH OIL Even if there was an unending supply of oil, there would remain one major flaw with its continued use as we know it today – its contribution to air pollution. Air pollution is causing health problems, contributing to global warming and death. Dr. Ken Rubin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at University of Hawaii has stated “…that burning of fossil fuels (coal, gasoline, etc.) is the single largest source of air pollutants. These fuels cause smog, acid rain, soot and particulate increases, greenhouse gas emissions, and dispersal of some heavy metal contaminants. Until we find cleaner alternatives to the present fossil fuels’ burning methods, most air pollutants plaguing the world today will continue to be a problem in the future.” The burning and use of oil is wreaking havoc on the world’s populations, if not the environment. In the USA, after scores of years of unchecked polluting, the remnants from fossil fuel combustible engines are literally sickening. Sure, the government and auto industry have come up with emission standards and more fuel-efficient automobiles and the air isn’t getting polluted as fast as it had been 20 years ago. Still, fossil fuel use is increasing worldwide, especially in developing countries, and the pollution is having significant negative health effects on people. The World Bank has estimated that exposure to particulates (remnants of burnt fossil fuels in the air) exceeding the World Health Organization’s health standard, accounts for roughly 2 to 5 percent of all deaths in urban areas in the developing world. These deaths

are in addition to other negative health effects from coughing and bronchitis to heart disease and lung cancer. In these same cities, air pollution is responsible for some 50 million cases per year of chronic coughing in children alone. Studies in the U.S. have found that mortality rates are 17 to 26 percent higher in cities with the dirtiest air, compared with those with the cleanest air. Be glad you live in Hawaii, though we too contribute to those numbers.

own personal pollution, the real gains will be made through complete use of alternate fuels.

POSSIBLE ALTERNATE FUELS Since it’s been known that the planet has a limited supply of the black gold, the U.S. Research & Development has played with the notion of an alternate fuel source. Today, there are old and new potential solutions including alcohol-based, natural gas, electricity, hydrogen and biological oil-based fuels. What most don’t realize is many of the alternate fuels being used today have been around for over 100 years. Actually, before the U.S. began using petroleum as our fuel of choice, we were using other alcohol-based fuels in combustible engines. Someone eventually figured out a way to process fossil fuels cheaper and so came the

SO WHAT DO WE DO? Recognizing that 49% of petroleum use in the U.S. is for combustible engines and that the bulk of our air pollution is derived from this source, we can individually make a difference. While opting for a more fuel-efficient vehicle alone can make a big difference in your

SO WHAT’S THE DOWNSIDE? I asked Shaun Stenshol, Maui business owner and longtime conservationist, to help explain some of the problems I foresaw with diesel and biodiesel: Q: From experience I know that diesel vehicles are noisy. How do you put up with the noise? A: Wow. That is a misconception. Passenger vehicles aren’t noisy anymore and haven’t been for years. In large hauling vehicles, like say a Peterbuilt with huge motors, you can expect to hear the engine outside but in the new large pick-up trucks you won’t even hear the engine running. Q: Fuel, both diesel and biodiesel, cost more to purchase. Why would I want to spend more money on fuel? A: What most people don’t realize is that diesel fuel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines. My VW gets 42 to 49 mpg as a diesel but the same car in a gasoline version only gets 23-29. You do the math. The few cents more you pay for diesel or biodiesel is more than made up for in gas mileage. And don’t forget biodiesel is cleaner and renewable. Q: Diesel engines seem slow and sluggish. Why would I give up the power and pep of my car for a diesel? A: I think you would be surprised at the power in a diesel engine. True, there is a slight difference in pep but I doubt if you would notice it. On the other hand, the diesel has more torque, that’s why the big trucks use them. You will notice a big difference driving up to Haleakala in a diesel-powered vehicle. Not only that but diesel engines last longer, that’s why generators and power plants all use diesel. A diesel engine will likely outlast the body of a car on this island. Q: If diesel engines are such a good thing, why aren’t more people driving them? A: Well, they are driving diesels in Europe where gas is $5 a gallon. I just don’t think people care about mileage as much here because we (the U.S.) have the cheapest gas in the world. It could be that people aren’t aware of the advantages because diesels weren’t ever part of the passenger car.

sucking of the thick liquid from the earth and major polluting of the earth’s atmosphere. As it stands today, the fuel of the future is likely to be hydrogen, though a few will argue that point. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and makes up about 75% of the universe’s mass. It is currently being researched and tested as a fuel for internal combustion engines, as well as energy for fuel cells. General Motors, who claims to be the leader in U.S. hydrogen-powered automobiles and has invested over a billion dollars in the technology, says it will have an affordable hydrogen-powered car by 2010. However, most academics and experts will tell you that a truly marketable hydrogen-powered vehicle that is supported by the masses is 10 to 20 years down the road. Besides, we heard similar statements from automakers years ago when electric cars were the vehicles of the future. So what do we do today to stop the wars, filling our lungs with crap, and killing people with our noxious fumes?

BIODIESEL FUEL Conscientious people don’t have to wait for a hydrogen-powered vehicle to finally arrive to do something about the environment and to help ward off conflicts over a depleting oil supply. Biodiesel fuel is here now and is about the best interim solution today. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel. Yes renewable, meaning it is derived from the oils of plants such as soy, rapeseed, corn, algae, peanut, sunflower and others whose crops can be grown over and over to create more fuel. After the oil is extracted from plants, it is processed and the resulting products are biodiesel fuel and glycerin. Manufacturers of other products, such as cosmetics in particular, can use the glycerin so that there are no wasted by-products. The minimal carbon emissions, from engines burning biodiesel, are on par with the carbon absorption capability of the crops grown for the fuel. Biodiesel fuel can also be made from used cooking oils and fats. There are large quantities of waste vegetable oil, animal oils and fats. The disposal of these waste products is a hazard if not properly handled and it’s likely that large amounts are illegally deposited in the sewers and sent to landfills. Recycling these waste products as fuel would increase their value and potentially reduce the hazards. Soy is leading the way by lobbying federal, state and local governments hard to promote its crops and biodiesel for use as the alternate fuel of choice. Soy is well positioned to be the dominating crop for biodiesel. The U.S. currently grows tons of soy in 29 states by over 400,000 farmers. But micro algae may prove to be a more efficient crop for biodiesel down the road because algae reproduce faster than any other plant. In Europe, the rapeseed is the dominant crop for producing biodiesel fuel, where Germany is expanding its use after 12 years of trials and study. Biodiesel fuel can be used in any diesel

COVER STORY

Acres and acres of untapped fuel engine vehicle immediately without any modifications to the engine. The only exception will be vehicles using rubber components in the fuel system that are easily replaced and found in some cars made prior to 1994. Biodiesel fuel can be mixed with regular diesel fuel in any mix. When mixing as little as 1% biodiesel with 99% regular diesel fuel in a vehicle, the sulfur emissions (one of a few pollutants from fossil fuel combustible engines) are significantly reduced and engine life is improved. Using an 80/20 mix of regular/biodiesel particulate matter is reduced 31%. When burning 100% biodiesel, emission pollutants are reduced by over 80%. There are no noticeable differences in vehicle performance when comparing biodiesel fuel to regular diesel fuel, though, technically, mileage and pep are slightly less with biodiesel. But biodiesel is safer to handle, biodegradable and non-toxic. Don’t go sucking on the tailpipe or anything, but you can be assured that those fumes are considerably safer in comparison to the gasoline fumes you’ve been enduring. The price of biodiesel is about the same as that of regular gas but that is only because the fuel is not being produced in the large quantities that fossil fuels are produced in today. Large-scale production of biodiesel could bring the cost down to $1.50/gallon, with micro algae backers touting they can get it down to under $1.00/gallon. However, the mileage per gallon of a diesel engine over that of a conventional gasoline engine is more than 40% better. Distribution of biodiesel worldwide can be swift. Diesel engines are used extensively worldwide for transportation, electricity generation and for powering machinery and the fuel stations that accompany them. Facilities (pumps and tanks) for the distribution of diesel fuel today are suitable for biodiesel fuel distribution now. State and federal governments are also providing tax incentives to users of biodiesel that further reduces the costs of use. Just this month the Senate Finance Committee approved a tax incentive for biodiesel during its markup of the comprehensive energy tax package. The legislation would provide a onecent reduction in the diesel fuel excise tax for each percentage of biodiesel blended with

petroleum diesel up to 20 percent. With gas prices expected to rise as we deplete resources, this legislation is a significant incentive to make your next vehicle one with a diesel engine and fill it with vegetable oil.

BIODIESEL IN HAWAII Use of biodiesel in Hawaii got started in December 1996 when Pacific Biodiesel launched their business by working with the Department of Energy and the City and County of Honolulu and obtained a grant to demonstrate biodiesel’s viability in government vehicles. The five-year demonstration in two government trucks proved the viability of mixing 80% regular diesel with 20% biodiesel. Today, all of the city and county’s diesel vehicles mix 20% of biodiesel with their regular diesel fuel. Twenty percent is the magic number to meet federal ‘alternate fuel’ standards and qualify for tax and other benefits. Today, Pacific Biodiesel, the first and only biodiesel producer on Maui, makes its fuel using 100% reclaimed cooking oil from around the island. They are currently making about 250,000 gallons per year but expect the demand to begin going up and will one day have to consider alternate sources (crops) for the vegetable oil. Pacific Biodiesel is providing a big service to the islands and profiting by simply taking the waste oil off the hands of the many restaurants. “We are about getting all the waste oils on Maui. Oahu has room to grow but we have to increase the demand to warrant the additional collection,” says Larry Zolezzi, who is head of finance and sales at Pacific Biodiesel. “Our biggest customer on Maui is Pacific Whale Foundation, who are leaders on earth issues and understand the benefits of using alternate fuels. People don’t realize how much fuel boats use and emissions they put out. It would make a huge difference in our environment and the cost of fuel, if our boats and ships just mixed in 20% or so of biodiesel,” Larry went on to say. Another big customer of Pacific Biodiesel is Maui resident and business owner, Shaun Stenshol, who uses biodiesel in his company and personal vehicles. Shaun, a longtime conservationist, has been touting the advantages of biodiesel for years and puts his money where

his mouth is constantly. Shaun owns and runs Maui Recycling Service (www.mauirecycles.com), just one of two of such services on the island, where all his vehicles use 100% biodiesel. Shaun also has an incentive program for his employees giving them free fuel if they own a diesel vehicle (I did say he’s putting his money where his mouth is!). If that’s not enough, then check out Shaun’s new Bio-Beetle rent-a-car service at www.biobeetle.com. The service uses an unmodified 2000 VW Beetle diesel powered by 100% biodiesel fuel. Shaun is making every effort to draw attention to the benefits and need for biodiesel. Shaun offers, “The one thing I like to tell people is, ‘Anyone can buy a diesel car and use 100% biodiesel fuel and make a difference!’” Thanks Shaun, for raising our level of awareness. Apparently, there is some awareness at the Maui County level as to what we should be looking at agriculturally, since sugar subsidies will be lost in the near future. Our county council recently put out a Request For Proposal (RFP) for a study to determine what crop would be best suited to Maui for the purpose of producing biodiesel fuel. County Councilwoman Charmaine Tavares is known to be a supporter of biodiesel and in her wisdom may see an opportunity for Maui County to become a leader in fuel self-sufficiency, as well as planning for future economic stability with the loss of our cane crops. With the loss of those crops, we could end up putting up more homes and condos and additional stress on our environment.

IN A NUTSHELL... We are running out of oil, choking our neighbors and ourselves with engine emissions while we have an economically feasible solution before us in biodiesel fuel. We have the option to choose and make a difference. Here in Hawaii, there are numerous economic benefits to be gained from the production of biodiesel and the opportunity to be a leader and model for other regions in the world. If for no other reason, we could become a bit more independent of gasoline supplies and possibly provide a replacement crop for the cane that we are going to lose. But there are also the benefits to our environment and our health. On an island where health, spiritual awareness and ohana are integrated into our lifestyle, we should be setting examples for the rest of the country to follow. Maybe it will rub off! I have a dream that one day, we will become the leaders in the U.S. by adopting a biodiesel standard and grow crops of vegetables for their oil to fuel our vehicles. I have a dream that we will cease to pollute our neighbors, preserve our environment and not fight for oil. I have a dream that more Americans will be responsible for our environment and become aware of the reality gasoline burners and the benefits of vegetable oil powered vehicles. My next vehicle is going to have a diesel engine and powered by vegetable oil! MTW

The wine of the week is the Canoe Ridge 2000 Chardonnay from Washington State. The estate’s vineyard is located on an east/west-facing, 5-mile long slope that is home to many different varieties of grapes in the Columbia Valley appellation in eastern Washington. Canoe Ridge was actually named by the famed explorers Louis and Clarke as they were traveling down the Colombia River and thought this slope looked like an over-turned canoe. Owned by the Chalone Wine Group, Canoe Ridge is a winery where two-thirds of production is Merlot. Although focused on mainly red wines, they do produce a small amount of white wine. Their Chardonnay is only partial malolactic fermentation, with 60% French oak barrel fermentation for six months and 40% steel barrel fermentation. This is an old-world way that allows the true fruit character to show through. This Chardonnay is food friendly and should be paired with Pacific Rim-style food. Try it on for size. Enjoy!

BY RITA SAKAJIAN

Maui Has Done Him Right “I know I have written a lot of ‘you done me wrong’ songs,” said Patrick Major, a versatile musician who not only writes songs, but is a master on the drums, plays the guitar & sings. “A writer usually puts a lot of himself in his work. I guess I should start writing music with different themes,” he concluded. Major, who was born in Santa Monica, CA, moved to Las Vegas at the age of five. “My dad was a drummer so naturally I wanted to be a trombone player. I took it up in the school band but I didn’t do well,” explained Major. He eventually started tinkering with the drums at the age of ten. He owes his true inspiration to two famous jazz drummers, Louie Belson and Buddy Rich, who he met in a jazz clinic when he was eleven years old. “When I listened to them play, it was as if they were making the drums sing,” said Major with a look of awe on his face. When Patrick Major turned 18 he left Vegas because he said he didn’t like the scene. He spent the following years touring with some bands, then made a permanent home in Lake Tahoe (the California side) and played mostly the Nevada tour (Vegas, Reno, etc.). Major, who moved to Maui two years ago, said he had been here on vacation several times. When a serious relationship broke up, he felt he needed a change. “I asked myself, where could I go that’s better than Tahoe? Talked to my daughter about moving and said, ‘Let’s just go!’ So we packed up and moved to paradise,” said Major. He has another daughter who is attending San Diego State. He has taken a couple of voice lessons but has never had a guitar lesson in his life. Major started playing the guitar about nine years ago. “When I was play-

ing the drums with several of the bands, I had to pretty much do what they wanted, but now that I play the guitar and sing, I can do as I please,” he said with a smile. Major started getting into writing his own music when he was in his early 20’s. He boldly admits that he is not the kind of musician that plays what the public wants to hear all the time. He says some musicians want to please the public and be happy with that, but he is not one of them. When Major moved to Maui, he was pleasantly surprised on two counts. “When I got to Maui I was so happy to see there was plenty of work,” he said joyfully. When he first got here, he bought the local newspaper and got a list of clubs and artists. “What really blew me out of the water was the warm welcome I received from my fellow musicians!” He went on to say that normally, musicians are very territorial and are not comfortable with other musicians moving in on their territory. “The first musician I contacted was Gail Swanson. She was so great to me and was instrumental in getting my first gig at Cheeseburger in Paradise. She really went out of her way to make me comfortable and I will always be grateful for her kindness,” said Major. Gail sings the duet with him, “Nothing But A Child” which is a cut from his latest CD, “Patrick Major – Odd Jobs”. Some of the other better-known artists Major has played drums with are 17-year-old blues guitarist, Vince Esquire and his band, and Jimmy Mac & Mac’s Maniacs. I asked Major what challenges he has come across here on Maui. He surprised me with his answer. “Tourists come and go and I feel that when I am performing at one of my gigs, I am just background music for them. I want locals to get to know me and my music and come especially to see me,” he said. “The good thing about being a versatile entertainer is that if I lose a solo gig, I can

FLOGGING MOLLY "ALIVE BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR" These guys are hands down the best Irish Punk/Pub rock band in the scene today (sorry, but all you Dropkick Murphys need to grow up) and this release is indicative of that. Never mind the fact that they're really from Los Angeles. This disc is a live set captured at Molly Malone’s and while it doesn't have a lot of their best tunes, it still drips with energy and old, traditional fun. At times their vocalist may make you think of a yelping Chihuahua, but never in an annoying way. This CD will definitely give you a fantastic idea of how much better Flogging Molly is in the flesh. Although, I would still recommend picking up their full-length albums from Side One Dummy Records. -26f Records

DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL "SWISS ARMY ROMANCE" -REISSUE Did you know that Charles Manson also used to sing and play acoustic guitar tunes with a more-than-captive audience singing along in a seemingly trance-like state? Anyway, we have what's become a record label bodily function byproduct here. This sort of thing has become way too popular: Band gets big, new label scrambles to have as much product as possible. Which in this case is the debut album from a different label. This is Chris Carabba's first record as Dashboard Confessional. A chunk of the songs here show up on his second record, not to mention his much too early live album from the Unplugged series on MTV. Imagine that! An unplugged album from an already acousticbased band. The band tosses in two new tracks in the interest of showing you that even if you buy this again, at least there's new material on it. Who cares really. -Vagrant Records

VARIOUS ARTISTS "OIL: CHICAGO PUNK REFINED" Billy Spunke of the Blue Meanies and apparent owner of Thick Records brainstormed this project of taking nineteen bands and recording new, exclusive material in fifteen days in an old oil mixing plant. All Chicago bands. The end result is a refreshing mix of varying styles. No two bands sound alike and songs range from Irish Punk to Emo to Power Pop and it goes on. The point is to display the working class ethics of Chicago musicians and it shows when you can faintly hear traffic and machinery and other various forms of goings on in the background of a few tracks. Standouts include: Alkaline Trio (They shouldn't count as a Chicago band anymore, don't they all live in San Francisco now?), Lawrence Arms, Duvall, The Tossers and Rise Against. Better than most comps out there these days. -Thick Records

RUFIO "SELF-TITLED" EP One day, perhaps five years from now, bands like this will hate the fact that they had made a career of sounding like New Found Glory. Inadvertently or not. Hell, the kids that hoisted NFG out of obscurity into TRHell have already turned their backs on the band and moved onto even more gutless, bubble gum bands. While Rufio carry themselves in a direction opposite of all the syrupy melodies and all-toooverplayed subject matter, they still fall prey to the overwhelmingly familiar vocal style. Outside of that, all you have here are three forgettable songs with tons of bonus CD-ROM content. Does anybody remember the days when we used to buy CD’s for the music on it and not the crazy magic stuff it can do to your computer? Honestly, I hope the day will come when bands don't follow the weak examples they have around them and unearth something with a little more meaning. -Nitro Records

VARIOUS ARTISTS "ATTICUS: DRAGGING THE LAKE" For those that don't know: Atticus is a clothing line put together by Mark and Tom of Blink 182 for the sole purpose of appealing to skaters, punks, hardcore and potentially even goth kids, not to mention the musicians in these categories as they also inspire some of the artwork. Their shirts carry such imagery like dead birds, graveyards and cross silhouettes. You get the idea. So, it's a given that with all this music circling a clothing line that a soundtrack must be produced. For the most part, these are all bands that have been sponsored by the line but, and perhaps not curiously so, there are three Blink 182 affiliated bands. It's all punk stuff and within the sub-categories of hardcore, emo, pop and whatever The Transplants would fall under. While the unreleased stuff may be appealing to fans of the bands here, keep in mind that most of it culls from records not yet released. Highlights include: Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Water Music, Dillinger Four, The Suicide Machines and The Transplants. People might expect me to list the Alkaline Trio track but it's a horrendous live track. Ugh. -Side One Dummy Records

FILMCRITIQUE

Anthem ) X2: X-Men United (

Director Bryan Singer improves on the Marvel comics X-Men franchise, which he initiated, by giving more quality time to the film's super action characters as the plot develops. That's not to say you'll come away knowing what makes Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming - "Goldeneye"), Pyro (Aaron Stanford - "The 25th Hour), or Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hub - "Scorpion King") tick, but you'll better grasp how to enjoy the visual flourishes that spin off the characters' fingers like whirligigs from a production line. The movie is exquisite eye-candy with just enough story backbone to keep audiences from feeling guilty about savoring every quality of color, texture and super-action surprise. Now, if the filmmakers can just make X3 before the actors get too old to play their parts, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart will continue to mesmerize fans as polar opposite masterminds Magneto and Xavier. American society's distrust of mutants everywhere is exacerbated when deviltailed, blue demon Nightcrawler breaches White House security to pay a personal visit to the President. A Mutant Registration Act is quickly imposed against our evolutionary fast trackers with the help of former black ops Army commander William Stryker (Brian Cox "Manhunter"). Stryker also fancies himself as a bit of a genetic scientist, and proves to have been instrumental in Logan's mutation into Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) years ago. Stryker has depraved written all over him in Cox's ingeniously nefarious portrayal. Brian Cox, whose career picked up steam after his estimable work on the wellreceived independent film "LIE," has a gritty muscularity that bristles with subtext. Cox may just be the ultimate villainous actor. The currently running box office hit "Identity" would have been far better served had Cox represented the psycho killer awaiting execution instead of nonactor Pruitt Taylor Vince. Stryker points U.S. military attention to Professor Charles Xavier's school for gifted mutants, and an all out battle for mutant freedom ensues. A military assault on Xavier's luxurious mansion compound brings the immediacy of Stryker's threat inside the mutants' home, where Wolverine takes over as ass-kicker supreme, with Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) putting the icing on the cake with a thick barrier wall of frozen water. Although visibly affected by Stryker's torturing hand, dark mutant Magneto (Ian McKellen - "Apt Pupil") corrals his dominion over heavy metals to escape from his plastic prison and join forces with the Xavier's 'good mutants' to assail Stryker in his Alaskan underground compound. Here the audience is given an opportunity to

compare the aqua blue color of Nightcrawler's and Mystique's textured skin while Pyro, Rogue (Anna Paquin), Storm (Halle Berry), Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), Cyclops (James Mardsen), Iceman, and Wolverine pull out all the stops to preserve the future of mutants everywhere. "X-2" successfully synthesizes storyline threads from various X-Men chapters to form a cohesive film that makes no bones about its anti-Bush administration commentary. The hostilities of prejudice and racism that are set into motion against the mutants/X-Men by the President, are brought up for close inspection when our disenfranchised superheroes stop time to serve notice to the American Resident In Chief that he will be under their constant observation. The X-Men give stern caution that they will be watching his every move and implicitly holding him accountable for his every action. It's an addendum to the film that brings every wildly violent event that's gone on before into crystal clear focus. The X-Men mutants represent each minority of international people, through metaphor, as individuals with unique qualities that are valuable and integral to balancing this rich thing we call culture on our planet. It's ironic and fittingly subversive that "X2: XMen United" would be the first Hollywood movie to send an explicit message to the world that Americans are rising up against the crushing wave of fascism that the Bush administration is wielding against everyone outside of its entitled bubble. At two hours and fifteen minutes, "X-2" is a lot of bang for your entertainment dollar, and if you choose to look beneath its glossy surface, there's some juicy social commentary for you to sink your teeth into. If you look close enough, you can even tell that even the Germans (in the form of Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler) are on our side. X-Men Unite. MAUI TIME WEEKLY

MAY 1, 2003

Battle Finale 10pm Monday, at the Hard Rock Cafe Oops! The much-anticipated Cabo Wabo Battle of the Bands’ Finals is actually happening this week (not last week, as I erroneously mentioned...sorry)! Anyway, the bands that are vying for the title are: DevilTown (left photo) – an edgy-rock band from Lahaina, John Moore (middle photo) – the “cute college crooner” from Kihei, and Orion with Howard Ahia (right photo) – another band from Lahaina, with their brand of clean & simple, yet extremely catchy, alternative-rock. Guaranteed, the place will be packed, so be sure to make it down early to grab a spot by the bar, stage, or door (depending on your mood, of course), and the chance to make your mark on the ballot for who you feel is the most deserving of these Maui bands as they play their own distinctive, original music.

DA KINE CALENDAR

When was the last time you hung out in Wailuku? Market St. Mania - Cheap Entertainment Within just one block of Market Street, between Main and Vineyard in Wailuku, there are so many hidden treasures, and a wealth of amusements! Peruse thru Paperbacks Plus - the used bookstore on the corner, check out Request’s endless supply of recycled and hard-to-find music and witty banter, the charm aplenty at Marc Aurel’s Cafe, If The Shoe Fits (hello ladies - shoes on Maui?!), The Popcorn Factory, White Orchid - and I don’t know if I’m imagining this, but everybody is just so full of character, it’s truly an amazing and highly entertaining phenomenon to simply walk through the streets of Wailuku! There’s also a Farmer’s Market on weekdays, and the awesome historic Iao Theatre, with the potential to house amazing performances (it is rentable!). Located across from the Iao Theatre is Gallerie Ha, a quaint and evocative art gallery that features eclectic events and creative performances every first Friday of the month. This Friday at 7:30pm, it’s "Taboo" - an honest, humorous, and thought provoking play about relationships that cross generations and sexes.

Frida Friday 5 & 7:30pm Friday, at the Castle Theater, MACC Special Friday Encore - Academy Award Winner “Frida” This is one of those movies that so effectively captures the spirit of the time, and the essence of passion and beauty that underlies every moment that a powerful artistic vision and community of people bring to a culture, that I felt somehow changed, totally inspired and more aware. Most likely fleetingly, I know, but I highly recommend you grab these moments when you can! Soon you, too, will want to swig tequila with your comrades while arguing politics, dance tango and start fights in drunken cantinas, fall in love and become disillusioned, paint disturbing and beautiful images, and wear your mono-brow with pride!

picks by Sam Campos

At the mere mention of this notoriously-made-for-drinking holiday, the most responsible of adults light up with visions of salsa dancing and margaritas – “¡Tequila!” they cry! But never do you encounter someone who waxes patriotic over the premise of the original cause for celebration. Here it is... During the war-happy wrath Mexico endured during the early 1800’s, they accumulated quite a debt with several nations, including France. So when France came a-knockin’ to collect, with their heavily outfitted militia that doubled the size of the greeting, seemingly meager Mexican army, Mexico made up for in bravado what they lacked in size and defeated their financial bullies. Hurray for the underdog! ¡Viva la revolución! Now pass the lime and pour me another shot (in honor!), will ya?! HERE’S WHAT’S GOING ON: Compadres in Lahaina – all day party with live music by Voodoo Suns; Hapa’s in Kihei – Party with Willie K; Moose McGillycuddy’s in Lahaina – party with tons of drink specials and promo girls; Mulligan’s in Wailea – 8 bands, keiki activites, starts at 3pm, Pancho and Lefty’s in Lahaina – Tequila girls and live music. Check around, I’m sure everywhere will be trying to cash in on, er, I mean help celebrate the Mexican pride of Cinco de Mayo.

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: The new moon motivates you to buy,

GONNA HACK THAT MAN RIGHT OUTTA MY HAIR There's this phenomenon I call "The Breakup Haircut." I've lost count of the times I've seen women go through a breakup, then chop off all their hair, or drastically change the color. Why do they do this? -Scratching My Head Some women cut their hair to avoid being recognized - not just by their ex, should he want them back - but by themselves, as the woman who was dumb enough to get involved with him. (Perhaps this is what the term "a smart haircut" means.) For a weak woman, a scary new 'do can be a form of recidivism insurance: "Liked me with long blonde hair? You won't come near me with this avocado-green mullet!" Really big hair says, "I could be hiding deadly weapons." (Or is it, "Bad taste can kill"?) It's sometimes hard to be sure exactly what message a woman is sending. Of course, some breakup 'dos - like when a woman shaves her head except for a patch on the back shaped into the words, "Keep Away, 'Dave'!" - leave little room to split hairs.

HEAVY FORGETTING What's up with guys wanting to know if they're the best I've ever had? The guy I'm with now probably ranks in the top three, and with my history, that's quite an accomplishment. Still, although I don't like to lie, I'm not sure how to answer this question. Does it really matter all that much anyway? -Notch Rot You can answer this question one of two ways. Truthfully: “You’re the best I’ve ever had.” Or untruthfully: “You’re the best I’ve ever had.” Either response is likely to lead to some fiercely probing questions from the man, such as “Really!?” At this point, you might be tempted to tell him the truth. Go ahead - as long as it’s “You da man!” Of course, this answer may lead to further excavation on his part; probably with a silver teaspoon, like the ones they use to dig up ten thousand-year-old archeological artifacts. Tell him anything else, and you’ll never hear the end of it, because he’ll be digging with a backhoe until he can get his head around what’s better about the other guy. fix and sell things of value to you. It's easy to be obsessed with food issues. You're driven to stick your neck out for radical causes. The fact that you know how to charm people leads to your success. TAURUS: Rejoice and be glad that your season has arrived and is now in full bloom. The new moon in Taurus highlights your most favorable qualities; stability, beauty and consistency. Your intuition is on track. Your imagination is flourishing. GEMINI: Question the things that make you appear suspicious and guarded. A little bit of restraint is good, provided you don't blow a blood vessel. The new moon asks you to take a good look at your karma. The people you know are deeply involved with you. CANCER: Break out your most beautiful smile. Friendships are easily formed during this period. You've got the wind in your hair and the sun on your back. Possibilities are endless. Extend the feeling of freedom to whoever needs it most. LEO: Act in the fashion of your favorite leader. Making things look good is your number one job at this point. People want something real, more than simply "flash in the pan" descriptions. Massages and well-cooked meals will help you lead the way into someone’s heart. VIRGO: Take a mini vacation every day. Get a taste of the local color and cultures while respecting the uniqueness of each one. Politeness is an international language. A good sense of humor will help, as well as having a sincere desire to learn. LIBRA: Everything has its price. Now is as good a time as any for you to give something back. Forgiveness is key even when you feel like you were in the right. Avoid the pitfalls of the ego and allow yourself to be loved. Be happy – it’s your spiritual source of strength. SCORPIO: Concentrate your efforts on fairness. You're able to sweet-talk your way through a tough situation. Partnerships, romance, contracts and agreements are likely to come up during the new moon. Practice the art of subliminal persuasion. SAGITTARIUS: Hard work and creative genius work together to create a fast-paced yet interesting week. You're attracted to certain aspects of the health field. If humor is your service, find a way to get paid for it. CAPRICORN: Happiness runs circles all around you. It won't be easy escaping a good time. Go with the flow. Let your hair down and party with the best of them. Even if you’re hanging out with family and co-workers, show these people you know how to cut loose. AQUARIUS: Lately you've been an aggressive and reckless product of life in the fast lane. Pull over before you get pulled over. The new moon demands that you would spend some time with your family. A little bit of tai chi or yoga would do you wonders. PISCES: Hanging out with the people you love is your best bet for this week. Use your free time to fit in where you're needed most. Keep a loose schedule and be ready to act spontaneously. The new moon will promote meetings and social groups.
