Plastic doesn't recycle on Maui. In fact, Maui's plastic doesn't recycle on the mainland, either. No market has been found for the plastic collected by Maui County's Recycling Drop-box program during the last eighteen months. It simply costs more to sort, bale and ship the plastic than processors on the mainland are willing to pay. If you want to see how much of this homeless recycling exists in our midst, look east from the Mokulele Highway at the Central Maui Baseyard next time you're out that way. You'll see mounds of baled plastic that will soon be visible from the summit of Haleakala; much like the Great Wall of China is from orbit. The only exception to this is a very small number of hand collected and manually processed plastic milk jugs and laundry bottles that Tom Reed of Aloha Plastics is willing to take. Tom makes plastic lumber products at his facility over by the Kahului harbor. Maui's plastic dilemma is not exclusive. Plastic recycling on the Mainland is spotty - at best. Most municipalities don't collect plastic, and most of plastic collected doesn't make its way back into other products. The primary reason that no markets exist for recycled plastic is that the major producers of plastic packaging are not using post-consumer plastic in their bottles. Not Coke -not Pepsi. The best thing we as individuals can do is stop buying single use plastic packaging. If we want to continue using and discarding plastic bottles, then we need to subsidize the construction and operation of a material recovery facility (MRF) with our tax dollars. Private industry will not enter this market unless there is profit to be made. Let's take responsibility for our consumption and police ourselves. After all, if not us, who? -Bob Armantrout, Makawao
DEVELOPERS GET THE BAD RAP! As many of you are sitting at your table reading my letters with your roof over your head and your family secure tend to forget that a contractor once built your house. This trend of "I am here now you can't come" has blinded many to the fact that developers and contractors came to the call for more housing when the community called. The developers didn't make the shortage, high real estate prices or the congested highways, we asked this if them even with out the county doing their part. For years housing has been provided at affordable prices but due to the greed of us all wanting to make our profit, decided to sell at inflated prices which now makes it out of the range for our local residence. The mayor says he wants affordable housing but between him and Mr. Foley none have been approved. So the vicious circle continues with practically a building moratorium going on and no housing permits being granted (go ahead
check the county's website). The main topic now is again, we have a housing shortage and prices are climbing due to supply and demand and will once again, make it impossible for our local community to afford their future home. Remember Maui's tomorrow's vision doesn't include you and its up to our local residence to say enough is enough and think of us instead of yourselves. Aloha should be extended to all who come here not just to the ones who already have their piece of paradise. -Steve W. Kear
THE POWER TO DESTROY It is said that the power to tax is the power to destroy. Taxation can be used more productively to limit undesirable activities while encouraging positive ones. We should not tax those things we want more of, like long-term rentals for local residents. The council is planning (May 13, 9:00 am) to increase property taxes on rental properties, by perhaps an average minimum increase of $20 or $30 a month. This burden will fall on many who are already working more than one job to make ends meet. It will also make the rental market less economically attractive. Taxing necessities like food and shelter is an error in principle, when there are so many undesirable things we would like to limit. For example, with traffic so crowded, would it not make sense to increase registration fees for second cars? What about penalties for pollution? Or fines for environmental degradation? Wouldn't extra taxes on big houses that block views and coastal access tend to discourage that kind of behavior? If development that was wasteful of water and energy had to pay higher fees, and wait longer to get approval, that would encourage planning for conservation, thereby reducing public costs for infrastructure expansion. Let's decide what is harmful, excessive, or simply a nuisance, and tax that. When you are bothered by something, you may have the satisfaction of knowing that it is helping to balance the budget while keeping your taxes low. It is also being financially discouraged. Meanwhile, your neighbor is saving every month toward a home. -Daniel Grantham, Haiku

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON
WHAT A BYRD BRAIN It’s always a shame to hear a grown man whine, but that’s exactly what happened last week. It seems that Senator Robert Byrd (DWest Virginia) just can’t come to terms with the fact that President Bush flew onto the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and gave a victory speech. To quote Mr. Byrd, "A desk-bound president should not assume the garb of a warrior." Memo to Senator Byrd – You’re 85 now, maybe it’s time you call it a day and make way for someone who has a little room for logic in their heads. To top it off, another Democrat, Rep. Henry Waxman of California, asked the General Accounting Office how much the trip cost. Memo to Rep. Waxman – He’s the President of the United States of America!!! He is the Commander-in-Chief of the largest military force in the world. He can land on the deck of any aircraft carrier he wants to at any time he feels like it! Who cares how much it cost? What I want to know is how much completely irrelevant pork spending Senator Byrd has been responsible for over his long career. And as for Bush being a "desk-bound" president, tell me one president in recent memory who wasn’t. Should Bush go to Iraq and lob a few grenades before he is allowed on the deck of an aircraft carrier? Some liberals even put it in context with Bush’s questionable Air National Guard record. Maybe he should have just dodged the draft like Clinton. Interestingly enough, Senator Byrd was a major critic of the Iraqi war. Now that it looks like he may have misjudged the situation, he’s making it worse by whining. To quote him again, Byrd says, "I am loathe to think of an aircraft being used as a backdrop for a campaign slogan." As one of the more outspoken critics of the war in Iraq, maybe Byrd should have just said, "I am loath for an aircraft carrier to be used at all." Seriously Mr. Byrd, it’s okay if you don’t
want to stand up to rapists and torturers like Saddam Hussein and his sadistic sons. It’s okay because we have someone in the Oval Office who isn’t afraid to make an extremely tough decision, a decision that could have backfired. A decision that was validated only by the massive bravery and dedication of people who wear the U.S. flag on their uniform. We have a leader in office who went out on a limb and was propped up by the very people he spoke in front of on that flight deck. And if he wants to thank those people and create a campaign photoop at the same time, I say he has every right. Because, Mr. Byrd, if you had ever been elected president, committed your nation to war and then won handily, you would have done the exact same thing.
NOT PUSHING, BUT GUIDING Mark my words, it won’t be long before someone begins to question the motives of BJ Wie. In case you don’t know who BJ Wie is, he’s the father of local golf phenom Michelle Wie, all six feet and 13-years-old of her. Little Wie, who is from Oahu and has absolutely taken the LPGA by storm after tying for 9th in the first women’s major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, and then finishing at 3-under at the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship. It was after the Chick-fil-A (shouldn’t Martha Burke be protesting the derogatory sponsor name?) that BJ said, "Sometimes I have to push her to practice," and, "I want her to learn Chinese to help her international marketability down the road." Whoa, hold the horses. Does Michelle want to play golf or does daddy have a larger scheme in mind? But then I realized he’s simply taking an active role in his daughter’s life. Michelle has a level of talent that 99.999% of the world can’t even dream about, and her father is looking at her future when she can’t quite see that far. So when the cynics pop up and question who’s really desiring what in this situation, take into consideration that if more parents paid close attention to what their kids’ futures hold, we might not have the drug, gang, and inadequate education problems we currently have.

mauitime@mauitime.com I went to see the movie ANGER MANAGEMENT, which was rated "R"... I could not believe my eyes when I saw three different mothers marching into the theater with children - all under the age of twelve! Was it because they couldn't find babysitters or was it because they just didn't give a damn?! What is up with some mothers carting their young kids to watch adult entertainment? It kills me when some parents blame TV or movies for their children’s behavior problems. It's up to them as parents to protect their children from stuff like that. The following message is for mom & dads who don't care what kind of entertainment their young children are exposed to: When your underage, unmarried son comes home with the news that he made some girl pregnant-or your daughter tells you that she is pregnant - feel guilty, because you are the ones to blame! If they start using foul language, don't punish them; you are the ones that should be punished. Don't blame film producers - blame yourselves! Loving your children is not just showing them affection, but also protecting them from an R-rated childhood. - Responsibly “G-Rated” Mom

Included, according to an April report in Australia's Herald Sun, are a life-size transporter control, a gigantic warp core drive, voice-activated lighting and security, and an infinity mirror. "If you're going to do something," he said, "you have to go all the way." Alleyne said he started the project as therapy when his wife walked out on him.

Being Lean Clean and Green Your home doesn't have to burn Many homeowners and weekend gardeners are surprised to learn that properly pruning and landscaping your yard is an important part of fire safety (with a great looking yard as a side benefit!). Firewise, a national wildfire safety program, works with homeowners and communities to create a future where homes and businesses can survive a wildfire without the intervention of the fire department. This allows firefighters to concentrate on putting out the fire rather than saving houses. Incorporating Firewise landscaping is especially important this spring as Maui just experienced an El Niño winter. Research done by Hawaii's state climatologist shows that Maui experiences higher than normal wildfire rates in the spring and summer after an El Niño winter. Since a lot of areas around the island become dry in the summer, now is a good time to start clearing brush. So what does it mean to use Firewise landscaping practices? A key part of a Firewise yard is creating "defensible space" - being lean, clean and green. By reducing the amount of flammable vegetation around your home, you reduce the risk of
flames igniting the house in the first place. First, is your house on a slope? Keep in mind that fire travels 30 percent faster uphill than it does on flat land. If possible, try to reduce the slope in your yard. If that's not possible, then try to make sure that there's fireresistant vegetation on the slope. Be lean - prune trees so that the lowest branches are at least 6 - 10 feet off the ground. Remember the goal is to remove "ladder fuels" anything close to the ground that may catch fire. Prune shrubs and large plants. If you live Upcountry and have a fireplace, prune back branches and shrubbery at least 15 feet away from your chimney. Be clean - remove all dead plants and leaves. After you prune, don't dump all the green waste in a corner of your yard. It's a fire hazard and an invitation for critters to set up a home. If you have firewood, make sure it's not stacked against the house. Firebrands from an open fire can travel up to a mile in windy conditions. For example, a firebrand from burning trash could blow away and land in your woodpile, smoldering for hours before it ignited the side of the house. Remember, you want to make sure there are no areas in the yard
that would help a fire to smolder or grow. Be green - Remove flammable plants that contain oils or resins and replace them with less flammable plants. Of course, being lean, clean, and green has more benefits than fire safety. Pruning dead trees, limbs, and branches means there are fewer hazards to cause damage during high winds or a hurricane. And a lean, clean, green yard looks good. Stacy and John of Haiku are typical of many homeowners on Maui. They've planted a variety of beautiful tropical plants around their home, have a lanai, and an ohana unit on their
property. With land being at a premium, their house and the ohana are built on a slope. And like a lot of Upcountry homes, they have eucalyptus trees near their house. Stacy and John have already taken some fire safety steps. They felt the Firewise recommendations were easy to incorporate. Although every home and yard is different, there are a few suggestions to get people started as to how to become Firewise. For more information about the national Firewise program, check out www.firewise.org or call the local Firewise community liaison at 281-3497. MTW
Since fire travels 30% faster uphill, succulent ground cover would be a wise alternative

VARIOUS ARTISTS "UNDERGROUND SCREAMS" Compilations are the necessary evil for labels to subject the music listener with the roster of bands they have signed who sound exactly like the bands on the roster to every other label. If you're New Found Glory, then it's a place to keep releasing the same song on various comps. Leave it to Mike Park and the crew from Asian Man Records to come up with a worthy concept for a compilation. Five bucks gets you a handful of unsigned/as-yet-unreleased bands showcasing all things underground. Sure, to the average punk purist that's the whole point to a indie label, but none of these bands belong to the Asian Man stable outside of the tracks they have on this comp. I think every label should do this but, as I'm sure Mike Park is aware and thus never cared about, is the fact that there's no money in that sort of thing. -Asian Man Records

"TAKE THIS TO YOUR GRAVE" Now, I know there may be a possibility in coming off as contradictory in this review, solely because of my snarling dislike for the current crop of pop/punk bands, and this band would be one of them. Fallout Boy is a power pop set who sound to me very much like The Stereo (also a Fueled by Ramen label mate), they just seem to have these hooks that won't be shaken from your head. Like that new Shakira Reebok commercial. They are a great band at what they do and they don't break any new ground, but this is still a solid release and to me much better than the alternative. -Fueled by Ramen

MauiTime Weekly seeks Freelance writers to cover stimulating & in-depth community interest stories.
I'll give you one guess what kind of band this is. Yep, straight up emo/pop stuff here. Though, this band seems to take their cues from The Get Up Kids when they were still awesome and not trying to sound like REM. However, no pun intended, there doesn't seem to be any strength in this band. For all the influences they clearly have on display, they show no signs of ingenuity. Paint by numbers, if you will, with nothing that really grabs you. And this is just a three-song EP. Perhaps their full-length will show a better display of this band’s energy but I definitely don't feel it here. -Polyvinyl Records

"FALLEN" At its surface, all this band really accomplishes is sounding like a collaboration between Linkin Park and Tori Amos. The idea may have been intriguing to bridge the gap in those styles but it's not exactly brought off swimmingly and you wonder if doing so was wholly necessary to begin with. Sure, this album will warrant the occasional hit song or two (if you already bought this then you already know what I'm talking about) but listening to this, I have the strongest feeling that they will be forgotten once the hits wear off. There are points where they show true promise, however. Unfortunately for the band, it is when everything is stripped down to nothing but their lead vocalist and the haunting piano work. For me, that's what works. -Wind-Up Records

You can't imagine how relieved I was to find that this wasn't a major label release from Dillinger Four, a far superior punk band from Minneapolis. This is more of that garage rock punk stuff that I would like to blame on The Hives, The White Stripes and The Strokes, especially if this band gets big. There's nothing wrong per se about bands like this, it's just that I've got a major problem with the mainstream embracing a style of music that's backwards of everything else. Critical acclaim is one thing, signing bands just because their names start with "The" and end with an "s" is another. After that, D4 is still a pretty fun band, as fun as The Hives and all that, and for a ten dollar CD (why can't this concept be more in vogue) it's not as quite the gamble as most of the other new releases coming out these days. -Hollywood Records

The Dreamlife of Machines Can A Blank Generation Find Its Answers In The Matrix? Andy and Larry Wachowski ("Bound") lock down the style constraints of their three-part sci-fi cyber-epic fantasy with mesmerizing results that err on the side of video game desensitization. "The Matrix Reloaded" shoulders a visually drab color scheme that echoes "Minority Report" in its washed-out gray and green set pieces. The gauzy effect creates a visual drone that serves to distance audiences from the elliptical storyline as much as from the film's lovingly impotent violence. Nevertheless, this is one highly polished special effects action movie that will keep audiences enthralled until the final installment of the franchise, "The Matrix Revolutions," hits screens on November 5, when some theater owners will likely screen the complete trilogy to satisfy greedy fans. A vast improvement over the first film, "Matrix Reloaded" is a feast of choreographed GCI wizardry that will usher in yet another phase of cinema violence that can only choose to go beyond the beautifully bloodless brutality on display here. Since the first film, Neo (note the anagram from "One") has switched from confused Matrix slave into a Superman styled messianic protagonist with a lust-bound love for S&M warrior priestess Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss "Memento") in her signature patent leather cat suit. Neo has reconciled the "why me" aspect of his former nature, and now attempts to clarify his singular freedom of choice in one more meeting with the Oracle (played by the late Gloria Foster), who entreats him to question "why" he has made the choice he has already committed to. The Oracle's most immediate instruction is to rescue the Key Maker (Randall Duk Kim) from the Merovingian (Lambert Wilson), a stylish French villain with a penchant for debauchery and blatant adultery beside his inhuman wife Persephone (Monica Bellucci), a vampire of emotions looking for her own taste of sensual delights. The Oracle soon departs their meeting,

abandoning Neo to fight off a multiplying number of humanoid Agent Smiths (Hugo Weaving - "The Lord of The Rings") in a playground atmosphere reminiscent of "West Side Story." Neo, dressed in a long unisex coat that billows into a dress-like hoop at the bottom, fights a legion of Reservoir Dogs styled Agent Smiths that he's barely able to wound, much less incapacitate as their numbers increase. This post consultation combat casts doubt on
the Oracle's integrity as that of yet another Matrix programmed being from the compassionless machine world. It's a topic that's later brought into weighty relief by the architect and father of the Matrix himself (Helmut Bakaitis) in a scene fraught with amusing cinematic associations. Spiritual and philosophical bellwether Captain Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne "King of New York") brings his ship (the
Nebuchadnezzar) to dock inside the underground world of Zion, where our beloved crew gets a brief period of rest and relaxation within the last stronghold of humanity. Zion has recently been discovered by the machines and is under their menacing attack. Morpheus's rival and immediate superior Lock (Harry Lennix - "Titus") makes a stab at exerting his higher authority, but is firmly upstaged by Morpheus's inspiring speech to the vast melting pot crowd that signals them to move beyond their fear since they have already survived a hundred years under machine totalitarianism. There's a definite tinge of Rasta reggae rebellion among the immense crowd of Zion dwellers, although the throbbing music they dance to doesn't hold a candle to that of Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley or Peter Tosh. This thematic reggae archetype finds its negative aspect in the Merovingian's evil twin henchmen (Neil and Adrian Rayment), whose white dreadlocks, reflecting clothes and chalk white skin contain their vaporous ghost beings. The film's overriding emotional appeal lies in a premonition nightmare that Neo has at the

beginning of the movie wherein Trinity is shot in the torso while in a backward falling slowmotion gunfight many stories to her death. It's this traumatic recurring image that guides Neo to act as he does throughout the story, and seems gently linked to a hand-tempered silver spoon that he receives as a gift just before leaving Zion on a last ditch effort to save its people. The relationship between Neo and Trinity is presented as a rarefied union in opposition to the veiled king and queen who control the Matrix. The potential of Neo and Trinity to command the world of humanity, or of the human spirit - if that's all that remains outside the Matrix - is a begging question that will presumably be addressed in the final chapter. "Reloaded" is much better than the first Matrix film, but still doesn't carry the kung-fu chewing satisfaction of a Bruce Lee movie (see "Fists of Fury" or "Enter The Dragon"), where physical combat meant crunching broken bones and blood splattering hits. Here, bad guys get up so easily after being pummeled that you wonder what it takes for enemies to be conquered. Hong Kong fight choreographer

Yuen Wo Ping ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") creates energetic fights that test the boundaries of physical geometry and coordination, but ultimately lack individual character. This lack of temperament identification notably haunts "Reloaded" in other action sequences, as with the film's exquisitely excessive highway chase and destroy sequence. Cars flip, twist and explode in breathtaking collisions, but the audience is never given an impression of the artificial intelligence drivers being crushed into oblivion. As a result, the glorious spectacle is depreciated and the dramatic potential of the story is reduced to a purely physical dynamic. A film like "Final Destination 2" did a noteworthy job of filling in these exact kinds of narrative considerations with colorful characterizations that packed an influential effect on the audience as a result. Neo exhibits fresh powers at the end of "Reloaded" that promise to play a significant role in "The Matrix Revolutions." Thomas Anderson (Neo's former Matrix-infused identity) is now an object of the past, and his potential for original thought is strongly hint-

ed at, if not absolutely proven in "Reloaded." The philosophical and political riddles revolving around a "Matrix" theme of discovering God within, resound with an Islamic sensibility that flies counter to the media-hyped collective consciousness that Americans supposedly share. But the cultural impact of "The Matrix" franchise may, over time, prove to be a lesson in the power of cinematically driven adult myth and satire as propaganda for the masses. The elliptical conundrum of whether it is the humble masses or the greedy few that directly influence that power for its ability to distort is most certainly a moot point. What's at stake essentially in "Matrix Reloaded" is a symbolic capacity for original or individual thought. Lately, that remote gem seems tragically nonexistent in our human world. Perhaps "The Matrix Revolutions" will ring in a source that fills that void, at least on a communal cinema going level. Either way, the world of violent super action cinema is about to swing in a very aggressive direction. Fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be Matrix days at the movies for a very long time to come. The Best Place to Eat in Pa`ia is Now Your North Shore Night Spot
BY MAT SEAVEY
Kihei Caffe Do you know anyone that has a personal cloud? You know, the kind that follows them around everywhere, springing up out of thin air to ruin a perfectly sunny beach day. I have a friend like that, and I purposely left him behind the other day to head over to the south side, hoping to soak up some rays. I arrived to find Kihei in the sweaty grip of a hot and muggy day, the sun teasing me from around the edges of a huge,
counter is simple and pleasing to my heataddled brain, offering sandwiches, salads and burgers with chips or fries and a self-serve soda fountain. Chef/owner Barry mans the counter and he’s in an amiable mood despite the heat (he doesn’t know it’s my fault) and the long hours he’s already put in (breakfast starts at five in the morning). The burgers are a third pound of handpressed Angus beef served on a fresh baked bun with fries and a fountain drink with one free refill for only $6.95. Sounds like exactly what I need. The bun is extremely soft and yummy with an almost sweet, potato bread tex-

LIVE MAINE annoying black cloud (most likely sent to sniff after me by my spurned colleague, like a rabid, leg-humping dog). Well, if I’ve learned anything in my years, it’s that nothing’s so bad that it can’t be fixed by a big, heaping plate of grub. Blinking sweat out of my eyes and feeling more than a little salty, I cruise South Kihei Road looking for food. I’m not in the mood for anything too fancy or gourmet, but run-of-the-mill fast food isn’t going to cut it either. I want something good, fresh, and cheap that’ll satisfy me in an honest, straightforward way. Kihei Caffe comes immediately to mind. I’ve never eaten there, but I’ve heard they have a reputation for breakfast and I’m hoping it carries through to their lunch. Besides, a seat on their outdoor patio might grant me a cooling afternoon breeze (or maybe I should just voicemail an apology to cloud-boy). The place is sparsely decorated with a no-frills, all about the food kind of approach. The menu hanging over the

ture and the fries are . . . well, crisp and salty – what more can you ask from a fry? A turkey sandwich with provolone is comfort food for my wife, and something not to be taken lightly, so I insist on taking the first bite to make sure it’s worthy of her. Indeed it is, with thick slices of moist turkey piled high on a delicious whole-wheat roll. Other choices include grilled ham and Swiss, tuna, pastrami, roast beef, grilled chicken or fish of the day, and their signature honey cashew chicken. The breakfast menu looks good enough to drag me off the north shore, and they serve it until 1:30 p.m. so I might actually make it in time. It covers a lot of ground, from pork fried rice and loco moco to papaya delight and Biersch Mueslix, then all the way back to Ribeye steak or fresh fish and eggs and southern style sausage, biscuits, and gravy. Prices range from $4.95 to $8.95. While lunch at Kihei Caffe was no day at the beach, it was the perfect alternative and satisfied my expectations. If you have better friends than I do and can actually plan a sunny ocean-side escape, call a day ahead and order a picnic lunch, available at several levels of commitment. In any case, Kihei Caffe is a great little place to enjoy fresh, wholesome food and the right step towards shaking that dog off your leg.

WINE OF THE

Geyser Peak 2000 Reserve Chardonnay Alexander Valley $19.99
This week’s wine pick is the Geyser Peak 2000 Reserve Chardonnay from Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Geyser Peak is one of the largest and oldest wineries in Sonoma County, and with over 250 estate vineyards to their name, it’s no wonder they can produce some fine wines. One part of their winemaking technique is their Reserve bottling. Geyser Peak’s Reserve bottling is noted for their expression of careful planning in the vineyard and in the blending and aging process. Their 2000 Alexander Valley Reserve Chardonnay is a rich, complex wine that packs in some flavor - it is aged for 9 months in a combination of French and American oak. The nose displays some apple, pear and tropical fruit flavors. There is a toasty caramel, creamy vanilla taste that lasts for a while on the palate, with a slight acidic finish. A great food wine. Try it with a creamy pasta sauce with Parmesan chicken on top. Enjoy!

808 Connect Ohana Catch the vibe, it starts today! It started with an idea, a vision, and a common love for the music. What was once a simple notion to make a difference in hip-hop culture in the islands became a way of life for a new generation of aspiring musicians and friends. With hard work and perseverance, we sculpted a dream into our own reality. 808 Connect combines the spinning and MC’ing talents of DJ Skid, Amphibious Tongues, Def Child, Organik, Kaoscity, Mike Krus, DJ Pazess, Jo-Nathan, Drez, Goldawn Child, and Forrest, with Joe Baxter promoting. I began the quest as a child looking for love. I was coming from a broken home, getting love only on days off, sometimes only once a week. Our parents bring home stress from work. In Hawaii, most families work two jobs and the cost of living here is very high. Understanding this at a young age gives a child perspective. I knew my dream of my family spending time together was nearly impossible. When I was 13, searching for that family foundation of love, I began looking to outside facilities, like youth centers, and some religions, only to be disappointed by their faith. Hip-Hop quickly became my outlet, and my family. In Hip-Hop, reacting to the creative impulses in the first 15 seconds in your mind is freestyle. We would get together and practice every day for the love. We lived it in our garages, backyards and front yards. It felt like home, but I was still in the cold because all of us were from families that worked all the time. We had an element of dysfunction in the crew; it was a challenge to stay motivated. We needed someone to be on the ball, yet no one wanted to be that person. There was a void in

our success, but we were young and talented. When a pack of wolves has no leader, no parent, the young ones are not able to grow, to get life-sustaining skills. We went on dealing with what little scraps of life-teachings we were thrown. I was trying my hardest to inspire kids in the know. The art of hip-hop has taught me that if you practice what you love, you will inevitably become successful. MC’ing is hiphop poetry, the rhythm of our spoken words. At the age of 15, I was jumping into a rhyme cipher, sharing rhymes in a freestyle circle, on the streets of Baldwin Avenue in Paia. My first street rhyme came directly from the heart. Jo-Nathan was chanting encouragement to my young soul. The oldest freestyler in the cipher was Rodge, well known in Paia at the time. It was so cool, coming together so spontaneously. We were mixing rhymes that were expressing the pride of our neighborhood. I took that to heart. Ending the rhyme cipher on a good note, we were creating peace in our environment. Now inspired to rhyme by my elders, I prayed that there would be a way to perform somewhere in Maui. At the time, there was a little café in Paia with an open mic. All a child needs is a chance to show his or her skills. When I performed live for the first time, it felt great. It was a great escape to express my rhymes from the mind live. Knowing now that I could inspire other kids the way I was inspired, I decided to share the secret to my confidence with others. To find my calling was my goal. It’s 1996, and I am 16years-old and doing Filipino birthday parties in the summer with Vince and Nyte Shift Productions. I have to thank Vince for giving me an opportunity to practice my skills. I totally see the urgency in hip-hop, with our children dealing with all the scraps we are given in our community. The aloha spirit exists

on Maui yet it can be taken away if we don’t all make our own contributions to it and life. 808 Connect exists to share our way of life, of aloha, ohana, love, and respect, through our performances. What we blindly give from the heart is what will be seen when it comes back. By reaching out to the kids in our community and teaching them what we learned growing up here, we are trying to make a difference in hip-
hop culture, and our island lifestyles. Catch the vibe of 808 Connect at their show at Hapa’s on Thursday, May 15 - call 879-9001 for more information. Their next show on Maui will be May 23 at the Paia Youth Center, call 579-9472 for more information. In June, they will be performing in Kauai, and Kona on the Big Island, and on the 4th of July they will be at the Waikiki Shell on Oahu.

Director Christopher Guest teams up recurring cast members from his past ensemble comedies ("This Is Spinal Tap," "Waiting For Guffman," "Best In Show") for this immaculately executed comedy of stereotypes and music. The squishy underbelly of '60s folk music ala "Peter, Paul & Mary" (not Bob Dylan or John Prine) gets a thorough reality check in Guest's documentary-styled satire in which his affectionately realized characters toy with the hearts hung openly on their sleeves. Three groups of folk music has-beens prepare to reunite for a concert at Manhattan's famed Town Hall to honor Irving Steinbloom, a recently deceased folk music promoter, in this terrific spoof. The brilliance of Christopher Guest's highly original comedies cannot be underestimated because he faithfully embraces the humanity of his characters as people with heartfelt beliefs and desires in spite of their silly foibles. "Spinal Tap" is a cult movie among heavy metal music fans because of the ingenious way it celebrates the codified mores and histories that surround heavy metal musicians and their audiences. The amusing ironies spring from nooks and crannies of the characters' obvious motivations and transparent pretences. Every joke is a spoonful of humor that each character wants you to get. Of the three groups that represent the "folk music" world of "A Mighty Wind," the homely duo of Mitch and Mickey (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) come to the fore as former lovers whose mid-song kiss during one of their profound performances supposedly crystallized romanticism in the folk movement. Forget that there's nothing profound about the overwrought sentimentality on display during their goofy song; it's the marvelous comedic tone that's struck between Levy's mentally distracted Mitch and O'Hara's self-sacrificing Mickey that pushes the inherent parody under the audience's skin. "Saturday Night Live" audiences may recognize "The Folksmen" as Harry
Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest from the original skit they did in 1984 on the television show. The Folksmen were a serious folk trio in the late '50s and early '60s whose folk concept albums "Hitchin,'" "Wishin,'" "Ramblin'" and "Singin'" were marred by a manufacturing mistake that left the albums without a center hole. Shearer's character Alan Burrows takes the pratfalls for the group with his oddly groomed beard and deep bass voice, which gets a royal send up at the end of the movie. Rounding out the trio of folk acts is a "neuftet" called The New Main Street Singers, led by Terry Bohner (John Michael Higgins) and his not-sosqueaky clean wife Laurie (Jane Lynch). The group plays at amusement parks around their hometown of Tampa, Florida, with color coordinated costumes and an overly joyful "Up With People" style that masks the leaders' hidden agenda, which entails a witches cult worship of the power of color. Parker Posey plays a singer named Sissy Knox in the group and adds resonance to the group's white trash origins disguised by their bubble gum folk songs. Christopher Guest has developed a pitch perfect method for expressing subtle wit and social irony in his movies. He's become a John Cassavetes of comedy, allowing his actors to write their own monologue set pieces from a specifically laid out plot. The great victory for "A Mighty Wind" is the continuity amid the individual voices of its comedic chorus that gives the movie an overall timbre of impassioned playfulness. There's never an unfunny moment in the movie because the context of every scene is imbued with a sense of the shortcomings of folk music (or any form of music if you extend the logic out) and because the performances are all so energized. When Terry and Laurie talk to the camera about how they met and the jobs that they held before forming the group, Laurie shamelessly tells about her attempts at acting that led her to doing a certain kind of role because she did something that most girls wouldn't do. It's obviously a story that they've shared and told many times before, but Terry can barely stand to hear again. The jokes are all in the subtext. PG-13 COMEDY (Sex related humor) 1 hr. 27 mins. MTW

Rave reviews include the Wall Street Journal's "Everywhere in 'Nowhere in Africa' skill and art translate into vivid life"; Newsweek's "...with its lush cinematography and lovely score, it has the sturdiness of an old-fashioned Hollywood epic. What isn't Hollywood is Link's refusal to tell the audience how to feel at every moment"; and Entertainment Weekly's "Audience empathy for the (main characters), coupled with the filmmaker's proffered charms of wise natives and their mysterious rituals, goes a long way toward making this lyrical travelogue a crowd pleaser." In English and German with English subtitles. Unrated. 141 min. Tickets: $7 w/MFF passport. $10 single.

7:30pm Monday @ St. Theresa’s Church in Kihei
The Maui Youth Chorus along with Maui Symphony Chorus will perform several works on the beauty of music, including “Don’t Let the Music Stop” and “Let There Be Music.” But the real highlight, the crème de la crème of the Spring Choral Festival is their performance of Mozart’s Requiem - the single, most fantabulous piece of unfinished, literally commissionedby-a-mysterious-stranger, written-on-the-deathbed, intensely beautific piece of classical mastery ever!
Swing your ex, daddy-o 6-9pm Sunday @ Hapa’s in Kihei In an interesting turn of events, Hapa’s is doin’ the whole two-dates-on-one-night thing - the sneaky bastards! First, they have Neto Peraza & the Louise Lambert Band (pictured below) in a smoke-free dance-a-thon with all the swing, latin, and R&B hits your shakin’ rump can handle, as well as dance instruction for those in need of a few pointers (you know who you are). Then, immediately afterwards, there’s a very intriguing Divorce Party and All-Star Jam Session celebrating the disunion of Jay & Fran (who ARE these people?).Cheaper than your own divorce will be, it only costs $5 to get in to this dysfunctional (emphasis on the FUN) soirée! And maybe you can even trade your ex for a new one!
Zoo-zowie! 11am-3pm Saturday @ Zoo Maui in Kula I’ll bet you didn’t even know there was a zoo on Maui! Well, there is, and Zoo Maui is celebrating their 10th Anniversary with a special fundraiser to benefit their mentoring program for keiki. They have horses, deer, donkeys, llama, exotic and endangered Hawaiian birds, reptiles, and many more animals to love or torture, depending on who you ask. There’s even a giraffe named Squirt! I kid you not - which reminds me, there’s goats, too!

House of 1000 Corpses check Film ShowTimes @ Maui Mall Megaplex I was very excited to catch this movie written and directed by circus-goth rocker Rob Zombie. Not only am I a huge horror movie fanatic, but an occasional fan of Rob’s music, as well. Admittedly, the film plays out like one very long White Zombie video, which is cool if you’re open-minded and haven’t seen this sort of campy, highly stylized, with B-movie acting and hot chicks spiel over and over again. Maybe I’m getting old, or maybe just jaded, but the trying-too-hard attempt at shock and gore left me numb and void. Have I seen it all, or just seen enough of Rob Zombie, I wonder? Again, you tell me.

ARIES: Earthquakes create tidal waves. This
LOVE TAKES ITS TROLL I'm a girl, 21, who's been "involved" with a guy, 24, for over a year. We do all the couples stuff, including having sex, but he doesn't want a relationship. He's always running back to his cheating ex, who belittles him endlessly. I'm his shoulder to cry on, yet he says hurtful, insulting things to me. He did once say he loved me. But mostly, he's with me when he needs me, then pushes me away the moment his ex calls. What's up with that? -Where's Mine? The guy in question isn't without his uses giant knickknack, footstool, door-draft blocker, candleholder ("So sorry...did I drip broiling hot wax on your arm again?") Trying to turn him into a boyfriend, however, is like trying to make a GQ cover model out of a guy who's a ringer for the thing in children's stories that slithers out from under the bridge. Make a list of minimum standards every aspiring boyfriend of yours must meet (including, for example, actually aspiring to be your boyfriend), and refuse to settle for less. I know - you'd argue that you already have standards. What, like two of them? (One of which is probably "still has most of his own teeth.")
WOMEN WHO RUN FROM THE WOLVES Because I'm in college and working full time, I don't have many opportunities to meet women. I do see women I like on the street, in the mall, and around school. How can I strike up a conversation with a woman who's just passing by? - What's My Line? When you hit on some babe at the mall, you don't worry that she'll tie you to her bedpost and make you her slave - you only wish, in your wildest dreams, that she would. Most men are bigger and stronger than most women - with the exception of "women" who sprinkle steroids on their Special K - so you're just another horny wacko until proven otherwise. Chances are, you won't be given the chance. You're better off approaching women in coffeebars or other venues where they see you repeatedly - thus giving them the illusion that they know you. The next time you're inspired to chase a strange woman through the mall, ask about something she's wearing or carrying, or request advice on a present for your mom (eeuw, corny!...but serviceable). For best results, avoid remarks that invite a one-word response, such as "Nice shoes!" ("Thanks!") or "Nice rack!" ("Cretin!") or "I'm looking to staff my backyard dungeon" ("Security!"). Got a problem? Write Amy Alkon, 171 Pier Ave, #280, Santa Monica, CA 90405, or e-mail AdviceAmy@aol.com (www.advicegoddess.com)

is a known scientific fact. You may make the earth move, but look out for displaced water on your backside. The full moon brings a flood of emotions. You're challenged with values both spiritual and material. TAURUS: We start out with a full moon that will entice you, spice you, and excite you. Venus moves into Taurus on Friday. Get ready for that love thang you desire. You're attracted to unusual groups of people. Becoming more career efficient is another goal. GEMINI: Mastering responsibility and paying homage to the status quo is boring, yet it gets the job done. The full moon is asking you to be a more charitable person. This is the first day of the rest of your karma. Good deeds are better than money in the bank. CANCER: Be mindful of your actions while you're out there making friends. Freewheeling fun should be your aim. The full moon dictates romance and creative projects. It's a good time for underwater ballet, hula dancing, and sand painting. LEO: Naturally you've become the host with the most. The challenge of pleasing all the people most of the time has hit critical mass. Getting some feminine or artistic energy to share the load will work wonders. Let beauty become your business. VIRGO: It appears you're ready for a little vacation. Tuesday’s Mercury-direct will revive your sense of intellect and make you a better communicator. The full moon brings close friends, erotic poetry, and walks out in nature to a location close to you. LIBRA: Holding on to things that don't work will only frustrate you more. Pray and meditate for a solution to your concerns. Help someone that is worse off than you. The full moon will bring you the real goods, the best food and the security that transcends possessions. SCORPIO: The full moon is in Scorpio. Feel free to take creative risks. Be a good listener and try not to dominate conversations. Continue to work on domestic adjustments and home repair. By Tuesday you'll be feeling more relaxed and somewhat sexier. SAGITTARIUS: Your body is like a bank account. The more you invest in it via a good diet and consistent exercise, the greater the returns in terms of good looks, more energy and greater mental clarity. The full moon teaches you to lead by example. CAPRICORN: Having the best sense of timing in the zodiac is your gift. You know how to be fashionable enough to blend in with the crowd, yet still get compliments for a cool outfit. The full moon allows you to goof off with others and party a little. AQUARIUS: "Getting stronger" is your theme song as of late. There's just no stopping your dynamic drive. Family concerns will begin to settle down. The full moon may offer new career opportunities or even a promotion. Check the want ads. PISCES: Your writer’s block dissolves and reasonable communication is able to flourish once more. Bloom where you're planted. Environmental issues are more pressing. Legal issues should go in your favor with the full moon uncovering hidden desires.
