LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR TRAVIS SUPPORT Travis, many Mahalos for your immediate response to M. Abbey from Kihei, who has obviously been waiting his entire lifetime to write a "letter to the editor" and lashing out at an "opinionist", as he calls you. I have been reading your section from Day 1 and have always seen your calls as thought provoking, if not very insightful. You always seem to research your topic very well and give your honest assessment of the situation. I have to say that anyone who has an opinion is free to say it and I will fight to my death to defend that right. But when you disrespect my flag and everything that flag stands for, you dishonor the entire premise that the United States soldiers have fought and died for. Being protected by the flag gives you rights and freedoms most people in the world can only dream of. If you disagree with those rights or the freedoms you are awarded (I say awarded for all of the immigrants who have given up their countries of origin to become U.S. Citizens), then go and live somewhere else and stop pissing on the only country on the planet that lets anti-flag wavers as well as the shallow minded soap-dodgers like M. Abbey have their say without fear of secret-police backlash. As always a devoted reader, Blairdog from Lahaina

Do you ever read what goes into your paper? Re: this kayaking article by Amy Huyett, who is this Margaret Kearney anyway? - Here you find an obviously unathletic, stupid woman and you use her lame story to try to rip the Kayak tour operators! What the...?! Check the facts: she rented a double kayak for $10! - This price doesn't exist here on Maui; 2) the guide probably told her to pay for a tour (more like $50!) and she balked, thinking she knew it all and could save a few bucks; 3) to rent a boat, she had to sign a major liability release form that states in bold letters, “BE AWARE OF CHANGING CONDITIONS, IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT DON'T GO OUT, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN”, which she must have ignored, trying to impress her friends from out of town, and got herself into trouble! The tour operator was right in not wanting to take responsibility for her if she was not paying for the whole tour. She was cheap and looking for someone to pay for her mistakes, and these people make me insane. Why don't you teach Amy how to collect solid facts and not create shocking headlines with a load of crap from one old woman? Mahalo, Brad and Neda Canton via email

I AM AMERICA! I believe in our constitution, and the spirit it was written with. I am America! American because I believe in free speech and freedom of expression. I do not, nor will I ever agree with every other American. We are free thinkers. We have that right!

The current government does not represent my opinions, or me. We basically have a president, and I use the lower case intentionally, who stole the election. Our electoral-college system is not working, and we Americans are lazy, and allowing our elected officials to do their own bidding. Corruption is rampant - we all know this - and yet, marching, picketing, and running for office, if done, is small in numbers. I believe that the majority is silent, and yes, lazy. It is time to speak and join with our neighbors, in holding our politicians, our corporate executives, accountable for their actions. It is legal to call for the repeal of a Corporations Corporate Charter (this is the taxation status agreement that gives them tax benefits in exchange for an agreement that they support their communities in a positive manner, and not through corrupt means). By calling for a repeal - one person, one voter, can call them to task...meaning force them to comply with their Charter (their legally binding agreement), and to get back on track - the track of supporting America. I know this is not done very often, and is a little known tool, but there are tools like this available. Let's make a renewed commitment to America - to ourselves and our community as Americans! We ARE America! War undeniably increases our economy. But what makes absolutely no sense, is why we cannot make the building of this great nation a priority, and let that be the tool that increases our economy. Raising and supporting the education of our children, and rebuilding cleverly designed, sustainable communities should be our primary focus! What arrogance the president and his cronies have, as they steam roll through these smaller nations, and force "regime changes". This is not "our right". America needs a "regime change" at home. Where are our outspoken idealists? Most of them can't take a stand or don't know how to maneuver in this political arena. We better learn, and support those that are willing. Do we have any admirable, honest politicians at all? If we don't, we better breed some. With our education system as it is? Where and when will this happen? We Americans should let shame and anger motivate us to create a clear vision and direction for the new wave of Americans! -Sunny Crowley, Kula

OPINIONS BY TRAVIS HENDERSON

BOMBS OVER RIYADH I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist, but I’m going out on a limb with this one: suicide al-Qaeda bombers targeted Saudi Arabia recently in order to keep Americans there. I know, it sounds far-fetched, but if you don’t think these guys are irrational enough to try something like this, remember that the majority of al-Qaeda members are from Saudi Arabia to begin with, meaning they just bombed their own country. That’s like Timothy McVeigh, and we all know how irrational he was. You see, Saudi Arabia is home to Mecca, the city considered the holiest place in all of Islam. And the fact that the United States based military troops on Saudi soil was the main reason Osama bin Laden and his merry band of fanatic followers sent airplanes through the New York skyline. Bin Laden figured American presence in Saudi Arabia was a desecration of everything Islam stood for. Now for the good part: the U.S. has promised to remove all combat personnel from Saudi Arabian land. So shouldn’t bin Laden and al-Qaeda be happy about this? Maybe, but maybe not. Without the U.S. in Saudi Arabia, al-Qaeda wouldn’t have a focus. They need us there. Without us, who would they hate? Without someone to hate, how would they exist? Therefore, it is highly possible that alQaeda bombed its own turf in an effort to make Americans rethink their efforts to leave. Would American bravado make them stay? Would American machismo make them want revenge? Al-Qaeda sure hopes so.

NOT PLAYING FAIR I guess things are bigger in Texas, including scandals. What do state Democrats do in Texas when they feel they’ve been lied to? They pack up and

head across state lines. Texas Democrats didn’t like Republican efforts to redistrict the state, giving them (republicans) extra seats, so more than fifty of them shored up in a motel outside the state. I can understand their desire to not have their state districts redrawn, but packing up and running away? Seems kind of childish. I guess that’s one more reason to be glad we live in Hawaii because you can bet our politicians wouldn’t be quite that juvenile.

TOO LATE FOR SOME If two wrongs don’t make a right, how do you justify affirmative action? Showing someone preference based on his or her skin color, regardless of what it is, doesn’t help anybody. And you know who ends up paying the price? The person who is elevated beyond their skill level because of their skin color and then somehow has to live up to the extra standards. Case in point: Jayson Blair and the New York Times. Jayson Blair is a 27-year-old black man who was recently fired because he made up stories, falsified contact names, and basically just didn't belong at a reporter’s desk. The thing is, most of the staff at the paper knew this long before the dismissal. So why was he still there? Blair’s boss, Executive editor Howell Raines, recently said that he moved Blair along and gave him extra chances in light of his ill qualifications because of his skin color. Raines said he was sorry and he will do his best to fix the paper’s reputation. Forget about the New York Times’ reputation, what about Jayson Blair’s? His career is ruined because someone put him in a position he wasn’t ready for because of his skin color. Rather than pushing him through the system before he was ready, they should have taken their time with him so he could have learned the ethics and hard work required by such a prestigious paper. At least then he would still have a career left and the Times wouldn’t have to worry about their reputation.

This is to all the people that give us BMX bikers a hard time – You kick us out of your parking lots thinking we’re hoodlums or criminals, not realizing that we’re good kids staying out of trouble and just having fun on our bikes. Everywhere we ride people kick us out and tell us go ride somewhere else, but where else can we ride? We have no skate parks on the West-side and no place where we’re allowed to ride daily. So next time you see some kids riding bikes in your area think twice before kicking them out on the streets to dodge cars! Thanks, Bmxer with nowhere to ride

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Dr. Yogendra Shah of Granite City, Ill., was accused by a state regulatory board of performing an abortion on a woman who was not pregnant. In a complaint filed in March and reported by the St. Louis PostDispatch in May, a woman said she thought she was pregnant, but wasn't (based on an absence of fetal tissue), and Dr. Shah failed to test for pregnancy before performing the procedure. (A newspaper database search revealed that anti-abortion advocates have been slow to take a position on this story.)

POLICE BLOTTER Giving Up on Their Own Terms: Stephen Ray Carson, 29, in a standoff with police, said he wasn't giving up until he finished the crack cocaine he had just bought with the proceeds of a robbery. (Police got him anyway.) (Panama City, Fla., January) Motorist Christina L. Willis, 36, who was finally caught by police following a 30-minute chase after she hit an officer with her car, still refused to get out until she had finished her beer (Fairfield, Ohio, January). Motorist Troy C. Stephani, 32, trying to elude a police chase so that, he later said, he could finish his crack cocaine, took a wrong turn and accidentally drove into the police station parking lot (Medford, N.Y., April).

FROM POLICE BLOTTERS (1) (Washington Post, April 11) "Mount Olivet Road NE, 1200 block, March 30. An animal control officer responding to a call about a snake in a bathroom reported that the snake was actually a hair band." (2) (Vancouver (Wash.) Columbian, Jan. 7) "A Vancouver police officer was sent to a home in the 3100 block of S Street ... when a woman called 911 to say a group of 30

cannibals from Yacolt were trying to break into her house. (O)fficers were unable to locate any cannibals." (3) (Grass Valley (Calif.) Union, March 30) "A Dorsey Drive convalescent facility reported that one Alzheimer's patient struck another Alzheimer's patient, but neither of them remembered the incident or wanted medical attention."

CHUTZPAH! Convicted own-home arsonist Merle Crossman, 49, in an Ellsworth, Maine, prison, filed a lawsuit against Middlesex Mutual Insurance Co. demanding payment of $75,000 on the house he burned down, claiming that since he pleaded "no contest," and not "guilty," he is still entitled to insurance payments.

OOPS! In February in Chichester, N.H., Thomas A. Barrett was fined $240 and given a six-month suspended sentence for his no-contest plea to creating a false fire alarm. Barrett told the judge that he was celebrating his 21st birthday at Jillian's Bar & Grill, and as he staggered down a hallway to the men's room, he mistakenly urinated on the floor and pulled the fire alarm, which he thought was a toilet's flushing mechanism.

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ... The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was ordered to pay $165,000 and reinstate a former staff member whom it fired in retaliation for her having filed a work-related complaint. And authorities in Jersey City, N.J., declared an emergency upon finding 150 tons of rotting fish, lobster and squid in Max's Natural Foods Warehouse (abandoned, they believe, four months earlier). And Thailand's prisons department announced a contest in which inmates would vie to see which one had the most contagious laugh, and one official said that especially tense inmates would be urged to compete.

How Republicans Can Win Big in 2004 [Following previous column on “How Democrats Can Beat Bush in 2004”] The GOP is sitting pretty. Republicans control all three branches of government, plus talk radio and Fox News. George W. Bush's approval ratings still hover around an enviable 70 percent. Facing no divisive primary challenges, incumbent Bush is poised for re-coronation. Such heady days! “Some Republicans,” writes Deborah Orin in Rupert Murdoch's New York Post, “are dreaming and plotting how President Bush can do what even Ronald Reagan couldn't do: win all 50 states in 2004.” That arrogant attitude could lead to the Republicans’ downfall. A lot can go wrong in 16 months. If chief Bush political advisor Karl Rove is as brilliant as advertised, he’ll focus on what not to do.

DELAY THE NEXT WAR It’s an open secret that hard-right Administration ideologues are jonesing for another war. After briefly flirting with the possibility of an invasion of Syria, Paul Wolfowitz, Condoleezza Rice and Donald Rumsfeld are now quietly plotting wars of preemption against Iran and North Korea. It makes sense: as the world’s thirdlargest oil producer and the strategic crossroad between Central Asia and the Middle East, Iran would make a handsome addition to the United States’ growing portfolio of Muslim colonies. The U.S. occupation of Iran would also make possible a short, sweet pipeline route to carry oil and gas from the huge oil and gas fields in landlocked Kazakhstan, allowing the Bushies to abandon Karzai’s Kabul city-state once and for all. North Korea may not offer much in the natural resources department – we’re hardly suffering for lack of fluorspar and tungsten but unlike Saddam’s Iraq, it's a genuine security threat. Experts say Pyongyang is probably cranking out a nuke a month - and has missiles capable of striking the continental U.S. Going after North Korea now would be both smart and legitimate - but practicalminded Republicans should not allow national security to trump electoral politics. Bush should order his hawks to put off their next D-Day until after his inaugural. For one thing, war is losing its luster. Our failure to locate Iraqi weapons of mass destruction is causing many Americans to realize they have been deceived. New terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia indicate that the war in Afghanistan where a Taliban resurgence is underway hardly put Al Qaeda “on the run”, as Bush claimed. Two wars per term is something of a historical limit - a third might make edgy voters think that Bush is more bloodthirsty than the terrorists. Furthermore, financial markets are reacting favorably to peace. Stocks

have rallied 17 percent since the fall of Baghdad. Healthier 401(k)s will help Bush make the case that the recession is really over. World domination can wait until 2005.

Live Music by Kent Ross, Composer

SWEET TALK THE ECONOMY The U.S. economy has bled 2.4 million jobs since Bush took over in 2001. Most of that’s not his fault - the dot-com crash began on Clinton’s watch - but Republicans are crazy if they think Americans will blame the last president for the current recession - er, recovery. Jobless voters and their nervous neighbors are looking for three things from Bush: action, sympathy and truth. The Republican Party’s ideological aversion to government jobs programs prevents Bush from doing anything meaningful to stimulate the economy. But talk is cheap - so talk! During the 1992 recession, Bush I came off as clueless and uncaring. W. has begun to talk about feeling our pain, but he needs to upgrade his empathetic capabilities. Talk about caring, talk about understanding what it's like to get laid off. But for God’s sake, stop talking that tired old, trickle-down BS and sympathy for the rich folk. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll ranks tax cuts as American's 10th priority for the national agenda. People remember the supply-side Eighties. State taxes went up as fast as federal taxes went down, the resulting deficits took ages to pay off, and the only new jobs went to yacht builders and Cayman resort waiters. Everyone knows the tax scheme is a sop to the wealthy; everyone knows that trickle-down never works. Fortunately for the GOP, citizens have become so cynical that they no longer care. Stop marketing the tax plan as an “economic stimulus package.” Bush should sign the tax bill without fanfare, thus averting future Democratic attacks when new jobs fail to materialize.

RUN LIKE AN UNDERDOG The Bush Administration prefers opponents who can’t fight back (see Iraq and Afghanistan). But Americans don’t like bullies, the self-entitled or the cocksure. Republicans looking to win big in ‘04 must work hard for every vote, presenting themselves through their advertising and public appearances as humble guys trying to do the best they can under trying circumstances. Point to military successes, but don’t brag about Heroism - firing laser-guided missiles at soldiers armed with World War II-era rifles isn’t brave. Do what your party does best: present an optimistic, can-do vision of a country whose best days are ahead of us. Claim to respect your opponents. Let your ads inundate us with images of waving flags and sooty firefighters, and emphasize that we need you to continue to lead us in the war on terrorism. Then if you can just get the pro-life school-prayer Christian nuts to keep quiet until November 2004, you might just get those 50 states.

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.

SMOKING BAN DEANNA Bartender, Five Palms Restaurant - Kihei 1. Do you smoke and why/why not? No, I don’t smoke but I did smoke. I quit about 3 years ago. I just didn’t want to look old. 2. What percentage of bar or restaurant customers smoke? Probably I’d have to go at least seventyfive, eighty percent. Probably seventy-five. 3. Is the new smoking ban being enforced fairly and successfully? Yes. Most of the people I get are the local guys and they already know about it. They just go outside and smoke. Then you get your people that are visiting and they don’t see why they can’t smoke, but a lot of times they come in from a state where they can’t smoke there either so, what can I tell you? 4. Who should be responsible for regulating smoking - the government or the business owners? I think it should just be strictly business own-

ers and then let them make the call - because I know a lot of people don’t go to certain places if they can’t smoke, so that’s hurting the business itself. 5. What is more important - employee health and safety, smokers' rights, or business owners' rights? Employee safety’s good but then again if you don’t want to be around smoke, then work at a job that’s non-smoking. Everything’s important - you want people to be happy, you want the owners of the businesses to make it because that’s what Maui’s all about.

STEPHEN LEVINE Branch Director, American Lung Assoc. of HI, Maui 1. Do you smoke and why/why not? I do not. And why not? I’ve had five cigarettes in my life and it’s all been bad experiences. 2. What percentage of bar or restaurant customers smoke? I wouldn’t know but it’s been enough in the past to deter me from going to some places. 3. Is the new smoking ban being

enforced fairly and successfully? In my personal experience it has been a success. Employees are very, very happy. I’ve had phone calls on this job where people called up and complained about several places that have declared themselves exempt without following the ordinance. 4. Who should be responsible for regulating smoking - the government or the business owners? I think clearly the government - it shouldn’t be left up to a business owner whether or not they want to poison and harm employees and patrons. 5. What is more important - employee health and safety, smokers' rights, or business owners' rights? Clearly employee health. It’s not unusual for governments to prohibit the use of dangerous chemicals and substances in workplaces. Dry Cleaners are prohibited from using certain compounds in their businesses for health and safety of workers. Farming Operations are prohibited from using certain substances in certain ways. Gasoline formulations have been altered to keep from putting poisons in the air. Clearly it’s a governmental function. No bar owner is complaining they can’t have an asbestos night.

VIKKI LEBEAU Owner, Life’s a Beach and Dick’s Place - Kihei 1. Do you smoke and why/why not? Do I smoke? No. Because it’s not good for you.

Everybody in my family did smoke though, so it doesn’t really bother me when people do. I’ll be one of those people that die of second-hand smoke. 2. What percentage of bar or restaurant customers smoke? It really depends on the customer to be honest with you. The Life’s a Beach customers, we have probably seventy-five percent of them smoke. At Dick’s Place, it’s the other way around. And it’s just the clientele. 3. Is the new smoking ban being enforced fairly and successfully? I don’t have a problem with it. I feel that it should be up to the business owner whether they want to have a smoking establishment or not. And I strongly feel that way, always have. 4. Who should be responsible for regulating smoking - the government or the business owners? It affects me whether somebody smokes in my place or not, it affects my business...and it’s interesting, because I think I’m probably the only one that’s able to see that because I have two places, so I see it immediately. It was like overnight. Both of the places always had a really strong late night and now Life’s a Beach is just insane late night and Dick’s is hardly anything. 5. What is more important - employee health and safety, smokers' rights, or business owners' rights? The business owners mainly because they’re the ones that are paying the bills, and the employee can choose whether they want to work in that environment or not.

Kicking Off 2003 Summer Race Series Maui is the Mecca for windsurfing. Consistent winds and quality conditions year-round attract sailors from the U.S. and around the world. Besides which, it’s MAUI, where people from all over come for fun in the sun, so this summer’s Race Series at Kanaha Beach Park is one of windsurfing’s most highly anticipated events. This year the Race Series begins with the DaKine Classic on Saturday, May 24 at 11:30 a.m. (kids at 9 a.m.). This is the 19th annual DaKine Classic, making it the longest running race series of its kind in the U.S. Kim Ball, of Hi-Tech Surf and Sport, started the competition in 1985 as something exciting to do in-between the two big surf seasons, and it has outlasted all other similar competitions. This series is the last amateur race series of its kind left in Hawaii, so it attracts a solid core of locals and visitors who stay all summer just to be a part of this one-of-a-kind event. “Windsurfing has plateaued or is on the decline, but it is cyclical and will rebound. We keep putting on this series to help the sport bounce back and thrive,” says Kim Ball. They have made some big changes this year to make it more accessible to all those who are interested in being active in the sport. There is a Juniors’ Division for 18 and under, and three Men’s Divisions – 19-39, 40-49, and 50 and over. The Women’s Division is open and there is also a Single Design Fleet and a Wave Gear Division. Five ability levels – Professional, Semi-pro, Advanced, Intermediate, and Sport Fleet (beginners) – make it an all-inclusive event. There is even a team competition on June 7 that will consist of three-person teams, with one woman per team being mandatory. “The Summer Race Series allows anyone to come out and have fun and be guaranteed a good race. We have a great group of volun-

teers who put in a ton of effort, as well as the director, Rick Vetromile. We’ll always put it on as long as there is a core group interested,” says Ball. This series has traditionally been good for everyone involved, from the competitors to the sponsors, organizers, and spectators – who can be sure that they will see some amazing talent out there. Everyone participates out of the love of the sport. DaKine got involved with the Series in its first year and has kept up with it ever since. “DaKine is super committed to the event and the sport of windsurfing. We put in a lot of effort to set the pace for the series. Good prizes, good food, good drink, and good wind make it a fun day for everyone and starts the Series off well,” says Scott Trudon, DaKine’s Maui rep. “The Summer Race Series is totally unique in the sport due to Kim Ball’s dedication and a killer group of volunteers. Kevin Pritchart, the World Champ, still competes in it and local kids can compete against the best guys in the world. I competed on the World Cup circuit for ten years and this one is run better even though there is no prize money,” explains Trudon. “This is a solid competition, that one thing in the sport that won’t decline. It has never faltered and everyone wants to keep it going. Maui is the focal point of windsurfing so people will always come here for the Series because it will always run smoothly. It is like a Swiss watch that runs with perfect precision. There is never a doubt that it will be a success. Sailors are guaranteed respect and a great day of racing and sponsors get good exposure. People come here and spend their summer just to be a part of it,” says Trudon. “The direction of the wind, temperature, consistency of conditions, free access to the beaches, great variety in a small place, anything and everything is available for equipment, and a perfect environment as far as the people go make Maui the sport’s epicenter. It’s crazy to think of where windsurfing would be without Maui. Maui keeps people fired up and the Race Series does the same,” he adds. MTW

Orgasms The C-word & Violence

Teri Hatcher (un)covers it all in The Vagina Monologues Teri Hatcher's five-year-old daughter likes to dip her feet in the family Jacuzzi and she likes to crown her mommy because she is a good dancer. When Teri told her daughter they were going to Maui so that Teri could be in “The Vagina Monologues”, her daughter asked, "Is the show about your vagina?"

10

MAY 22, 2003

COVER STORY

"I told her the show is about women, emotions and that part of their body and what it means to be a woman," Hatcher said. "The show is funny and sad and I really enjoy it." If you don't recognize her name, I'll ring some bells in your head. Hatcher performed in the television series, “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”. She has also appeared in movies such as “Soapdish” and “Straight Talk”. Television movies she has done include “Dead in the Water”, “All Tied Up” and “The Cool Surface”. You might have also seen Teri in the Radio Shack commercials with Hewey Long. Now, the bells are ringing... If you are not familiar with “The Vagina Monologues”, then you need to first be familiarized with the play’s origin. Writer Eve Ensler interviewed over 200 women from around the globe to compile her production’s concept. Inevitably, the play uses humor, pleasure, courage, and sadness to discuss many issues that are involved with women. "I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with over two hundred women. I talked to older women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African-American women, Hispanic women, Asian women, Native women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first, they were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them," Ensler said. “The Vagina Monologues” ran Off-Broadway from October 3, 1999 to January 26, 2003, and was a huge success. Ensler first opened the play as the solo performer, with the play eventually including three women sharing the stage. The play’s rotating performers have included (but not been limited to) well-known actresses, rock stars, supermodels, comediennes, broadcast journalists, novelists, mayors’ wives, and kidnapped publishing heiresses. Now, two North American touring compa-

nies have run the show in order for everyone to witness “The Vagina Monologues”, which will be coming to Maui on May 27, and performed nightly at the MACC until June 1. Hatcher appeared in “TVM” in New York City in July of 2000, as well as in the California production in December of 2000. You may be thinking, "Since the show’s title has the word ‘vagina’ in it, is it all about vaginas?" Hatcher says no. She said the show breaks the taboo to speak about the wholeness of a woman. Women’s emotional experiences and sexual experiences from childhood to old age are told in order to get the stories out to the public. Hatcher said the stories are approachable, relatable, moving and funny, and encompass so many things that women are. One part of the play Hatcher will be performing is a bit about orgasms. The bit will include Hatcher orgasming several different ways. From little grunts to huge explosive, mind blowing screams. Once, her father was in the audience when she was performing this part. At the end, she ad-libbed, "Okay, my dad’s in the audience and that's more than I ever wanted him to know." Not only does “TVM” discuss orgasms and first sexual experiences, but it also goes deeper. The play touches on rape and violence against women. According to the U.S. Department of Health, "Each year, an estimated 2.1 million women are raped and/or physically assaulted. Because some of these women experience victimization more than once, this means that an estimated 876,000 rapes and 5.9 million physical assaults are perpetrated against U.S. women annually." While going door to door interviewing women, Hatcher said Ensler had many moments of hesitation from women who talked about victimization. The beginning was touchand-go, but by the end of the interview, women were telling Ensler, "I'm so glad you came to my door and asked me to talk about this because I haven't talked about this in 50 years." The show has touched Hatcher personally. She is passionate about helping other women to conquer their own pain and insecurities. Unfortunately, therapists are easily accessible mainly only to women in big cities. That means of counseling isn't available to women

all over the world. By moving forward in their lives and openly discussing what happened to them, she said women can feel taken care of and part of a community. In 1998, V-Day was created as an international movement to end violence against women and girls. It is celebrated on or around Valentine's Day and money is raised for antiviolence organizations. The "V" in V-Day is for Valentine, Violence, and Vagina. When Ensler interviewed women for her play, she saw and heard hundreds of stories of rape, incest, domestic battery and genital mutilation. Hatcher attended a V-Day event at Madison Square Garden in New York City with 75 other actresses including Jane Fonda and Oprah Winfrey. At the event, Ensler asked women to stand up if they had ever been victimized. She said it was heartbreaking and totally unacceptable to see how many women stood up. It made her want to personally be a part of stopping victimization of women. She attended another V-Day event in Reykjavik, Iceland. Through a translator, Hatcher spoke to a woman who had been victimized by her brother and father. The woman felt as if she was the perpetrator because she opened up about her experience. Her family rebelled against her because she talked about her experience. "What's good about talking about being victimized is that it is the beginning of being able to stop it," Hatcher said. "That's what the play does." Hatcher has experienced her own personal struggles in her life, although she recognizes that her hardships are certainly not as bad as women who are in Afghanistan or Iraq, relatively speaking. She has been blessed in her life, and she knows things could be worse. She experiences pain and difficulties in relationships just like everyone else. Her philosophy on hardships is this; you have to give yourself a break for the things that happen to you or the things you create or the mistakes that you make. She said, "We all make them. We just need to be responsible for trying to be an active part of the reparations.” Women either let it dictate who they are or they need to turn it around and not let it control them anymore. Hatcher is a firm believer in forgiving yourself and trying to make your life what you want it to be. The play is a human experience according to Hatcher. Hatcher said whether it is called a vagina, it is a human experience because you have one, someone wants one, or you want to be with one. Men also enjoy the show because

By Christy Miles they learn information they wish they had known years ago. "That's kudos to Eve's writing," Hatcher said. "If someone else tried to write what she wrote, it would have came out preachy. Because the material is so approachable, then even someone like a salty sea captain can appreciate it." The openness of the dialogue hasn't been a negative issue; there has been a positive response in every “TVM” show Hatcher has been involved in. She said all people think the same things, have the same embarrassments, the same prides, and the same desires. The only difference is who expresses it. Those who feel good about these feelings and those who feel bad about having these feelings are what separate us as individuals. Hatcher said everyone has the same thoughts; the ones who don't express them openly will get to experience them through the show. Hatcher is excited to come to Maui to perform the play. She hasn't been to Maui in years and the last time she was here, she stayed in Hana for awhile. Coming to Maui next week seems right to Hatcher because she has been through some previous, rough months. Her daughter wants to eat fresh coconuts on the beach while building sandcastles. Not only will Hatcher have a wonderful time on Maui, but also everyone on Maui will have a wonderful time watching this vibrant, warm, caring, and amazing woman in “The Vagina Monologues”. Spread the Word. Go experience the phenomenon that is “The Vagina Monologues” at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, from May 27 through June 1. Tickets range from $11 to $36. Proceeds will raise awareness and funding to stop violence against women and girls. Call 242-SHOW. You can also visit “The Vagina Monologues” website at www.vaginamonologues.com

DININGFEATURE

BY AMY BURRIS

So I had the night off. I wanted to do something out of the ordinary; try something new. The West-side was out, upcountry a little too far away, but Kihei being relatively close to all sides of the island, seemed like a good meeting place. New on the bar and restaurant scene, LuLu’s was the chosen destination for me to rendezvous with my friends. Greeted by a rockstar parking spot upon arrival was only the beginning of our adventure... The twenty or so stairs leading up to the restaurant are perfect for working up an appetite. If you happen to be starving already, not to worry - there is an elevator. If you are only there for the drinking, then I would definitely recommend the elevator on the way down! We were greeted by the host, who was both prompt and courteous. He was all smiles as he showed us to a table on the rail that would accommodate the five of us. There was a bit of a breeze, so if your girlfriend is the type to get chilly in Arizona in the summer, score some points by grabbing her sweater out of the car before you go up. Happily seated, the first major decision to make was what to drink. The list of beers is impressive. All the staples are available and if you are into draft beer, LuLu’s offers twelve to choose from. They also boast that their beer is the coldest beer in 2500 miles. Is the LuLu’s on the Big Island

really that far away? If you are a Jägermeister lover, you will be happy to know that it too is offered - on tap, even. Jä! Tropical drinks are in abundance, and you can supersize the one of your choice in the souvenir "Big Lush" cup. Try the Guava Jelly. Drinks on the way, it was time to tackle the menu. Typical bar fare, LuLu’s has ribs, burgers, fish tacos (in actuality, a fish burrito), salads, sandwiches and a variety of appetizers to chose from. You can even substitute your French fries for Spaghettios if you so desire. Yes, comfort food at its finest! The chicken wings are available in mild, hot or “ass in the tub” hot, so at least you get plenty of spice variety ... But the dish to try is the Blackn-Blue Ahi. It was definitely the highlight in my opinion. LuLu’s is located at 1945-H South Kihei Road, behind Kalama Village. They are open from 11am-2am daily and have happy hour Thursday through Sunday from 4-7pm, offering music and drink specials. Live music featuring Bobby Ingram, The Crunch Pups and others, starts around 4:30pm and goes until around 8:30pm. The bar circles 12 television sets and allows smoking (that can be a good or a bad thing depending on your stand on smoking in restaurants). A pool table and 2002 Golden Tee video golf is available for your gaming pleasures. Overall, LuLu’s provides a fun atmosphere. Go for happy hour, enjoy the music, have a few drinks, order the B&B Ahi, and take the elevator back down if you must! MTW

WINE OF THE

WEEK

BY ANTHONY MOORE

Allegrini 2001 Valpolicella Classico $13.99 From inside the region of Veneto, Italy, comes the Allegrini family winery. Makers of great wines for many years, they produce special wines that will suit any occasion and pocketbook. Veneto is home to many different varietals and is the top producing area of wine out of northern Italy. The Soave is one of the more popular white wines made in Veneto. Although it sometimes does not have much more flavor than water, it can be found as a very suitable taste for many Italian lunch boxes. Though Veneto is more popular with Americans as a white wine region and is responsible for the famous Pinot Grigio, they do produce some red wines as well. Surrounded by tall mountain slopes full of snow and influenced by the Adriatic Sea, Veneto’s climate is pretty well suited to grow those perfectly concentrated grapes. The wine of the week is Allegrini’s Valpolicella Classico. Made from 60% Corvina Veronese, 35% Rondella, 5% Molinara, this wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks, thereby producing no oak texture to the wine. This wine is a must try, with clean, cherry-like fruit and well balanced, with an acidic dry finish. We don’t usually get these styles of wines in the U.S. so give this easy-drinking Valpolicella a taste. Enjoy!

Two Rooms, Many Views Inspiring both controversy and conversation, Lee Blessing’s play “Two Rooms” examines our perceptions of politics, terrorism, the media, war and peace. It exposes the connection of two people in love, separated by time and continents, hanging on to memories and plans for the future. In a bold move for a local theater company, Maui OnStage changed its line-up of locally produced plays mid-season to present “Two Rooms”, opening at the Iao Theater on Friday, May 23rd. “We see the world in a growing state of discord with a highly personal price tag,” states MOS Artistic Director John Langs. “Journalist Michael Pearl, hostages taken in Columbia, 9-11, Operation Iraqi Freedom. The theater can play a powerful role in our community by holding a mirror to a global events, examining the emotional impact of a world in conflict and bring us closer to a better understanding of ourselves.” Powerful when it was written after the Lebanese hostage crisis of the 1980’s, “Two Rooms” remains a startlingly relevant drama filled with insight and emotion. An American teaching in Beirut, Michael, is taken hostage by Arab terrorists (but it could be any group). His wife back home, Lanie, waits in agony while a State Department worker tries to keep her quiet and a reporter pushes her to talk. As political turmoil and media frenzy surround Michael and Lanie’s personal trauma, distinct conflicts arise. Is the government trying to keep Lanie quiet for Michael’s safety or to avoid embarrassment over their inability or unwillingness to take action? Does the reporter really care about the plight of Lanie and Michael or does he want to embarrass the government and create fame for himself along the way? The two rooms in the title refers to the cell where Michael is held hostage, and his study at home which Lanie has stripped of furniture to emulate cell-like conditions in an effort to stay emotionally connected to Michael. On stage, one austere room

serves as both. Maui OnStage has chosen to place the audience on stage with the actors, providing an intimate arena for the imagined conversations between Michael, played by Todd VanAmburgh, and Lanie, played by Noel Overbay and the all-too-real discussions between Lanie and the ambitious journalist, played by Doug Self and the State Department worker played by Lina Krueger-Miller. Moderated discussion sessions will be held after the Friday and Saturday evening performances of “Two Rooms”. Dick Mayer and David Sullivan, both college professors with extensive knowledge of Mid East policy, will invite the audience to share their impressions after the performance. “Two Rooms” reunites veteran director Sally Sefton with Maui OnStage at the Iao Theater. Ms. Sefton was the original Artistic/Managing Director of Maui OnStage 20 years ago when the company was first incorporated (as Maui Community Theater). Sally has since directed over 40 island productions for various theater companies. She is currently a drama instructor at Seabury Hall in Makawao. This well-cast play features some of the finest talent Maui has to offer. Todd Van Amburgh, as Michael Wells, not only recently wrote and directed “King of Pain”, he is referred to in local circles as the King of Theater. He currently chairs the Arts Department at Seabury Hall where he directs, teaches English and is the resident Set and Light Designer. Roles have included Sir Toby Belch in “Twelfth Night”, Hendrick in “Love’s Fire”, Caliban in “The Tempest” and Benedick in “Much Ado About Nothing”. Another veteran of the Stage, Noël Overbay, has been cast as Lainie Wells, and wife of Michael. Noël has appeared as Henriette in “Learned Ladies”, Iris in “The Tempest”, Carol in “Oleanna” and Jill in “Equus”. Doug Self recently returned to Maui and will take on the role of Walker Harris, an ambitious newspaper reporter. After a hiatus of 11 years, Doug is excited to return to the Iao Theater. Curiously, Doug played the role of Walker in “Two Rooms” several years ago, and

Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 6pm.

Tickets are $18 adults, $16 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased on-line at mauionstage.com, or at the MOS ticket outlet “If the Shoe Fits” store at 14 N. Market St., Wailuku. FILM

I'm cute and innocent.

Fluff Daddy Eddie Murphy Goes Down Again Daddy Day Care (No Stars) The offhand potty humor that splatters "Daddy Day Care" is sadly the only substance remotely resembling anything funny in this fluff of a cotton candy movie. Eddie Murphy tosses his career out the window like a poorly folded paper airplane, with director Steve Carr ("Dr. Dolittle 2") going to great pains to keep things aimed at five-year-olds who will presumably thrill at seeing other kiddies their own age on the big screen. Charlie Hinton (Eddie Murphy - "Bowfinger") is an advertising executive who gets laid off along with 300 other employees, and has to eke out a living by turning his upper class residence into a daycare center for children at varied levels of being potty trained. Faithful performances by Angelica Houston, as the cruel headmistress of a prep school for preschoolers, and Steve Zahn, as a kid-friendly geek, do little for a movie lacking in inspiration and form. You'll be hard-pressed to remember that you've even seen a movie the next day if you choose to indulge in the lackadaisical tedium of "Daddy Day Care." Charlie joins up with fellow out-of-work advertising cohort Phil (Jeff Garlin - television's "Curb Your Enthusiasm") in setting up shop as glorified babysitters, while Charlie's milquetoast wife Kim (Regina King - "How Stella Got Her Groove Back") goes off to do something attorney related. It's never certain that Kim is in fact following up on her license to practice law because we never see her at work. What we do see is Kim coming home to a trashed house every night where her four-year-old son Ben (Khamani Griffin) seems shell-shocked by having to share his house and father with a bunch of unruly attention grabbing trespassers day after day. Charlie and Phil's daycare becomes such a

hit with local area moms that parents begin pulling their kids out of the expensive nearby Chapman school, where headmistress Miss Gwyneth (Anjelica Huston - "Prizzi's Honor") oversees the children's strict learning conditions. Miss Gwyneth immediately files complaints with the city against Daddy Day Care that merely serves to shape up the unlawful conditions around Charlie's marginal home facility. The Chapman school soon becomes an obsolete establishment where Miss Gwyneth stews in her own juice. It seems more probable that the local kids have discovered that Charlie's house is more fun than Miss Gwyneth's stinky old foreign language classes and school uniforms. But the underlying issue here seems to have more to do with a floundering economy in which parents can't afford anything better than the homespun child supervision that Charlie, Phil, and their added employee Marvin (Steve Zahn - "Out of Sight") provide. The barely distinguishable premise for "Daddy Day Care" is that parents should not dictate to their children, but rather treat them as fully-formed little human beings to be petitioned for ideas about their needs and desires. While that kind of indolent logic might play to suburban America, it's a philosophy that dies a dog's death upon hitting urban air. Discipline of children is mocked and ridiculed in "Daddy Day Care" as a Germanic ethic that robs children of their chance to be free-spirited individuals who will naturally gravitate to being virtuous individuals. "Baloney" is a word I might have used to describe such flawed reasoning when I was five or six-years-old. Now that I'm older, I might choose a more crafty term for such a counter-productive way of failing to raise children. But then I've had a lot more time to do what everyone involved with producing "Daddy Day Care" could have done before making this boring and ultimately meaningless movie; think. Rated PG for language. RT - 92 minutes. MTW

No Exit 6:30pm Sunday; 10:30am & 4:30pm Monday, at Salon des arts in Makawao Yeah! I’ve been waiting for existentialism to be back in! Now I can whip out all my practical knowledge of Camus and Kafka as I poutingly ponder the ramifications of cream in my coffee. This play written by Jean Paul Sartre, “No Exit”, revolves around three strangers locked in a room together, as they come to an understanding that they have arrived in hell (doesn’t that understanding usually come from a party of two?!). Anyway, the experimental existential adaptation here is being performed with original music and dance, and does precede a discussion & cocktails gathering (thank goodness!).

Almighty Almodovar

Wrong Guy 7:30pm Friday & Saturday, at MAPA in Wailuku

“Talk To Her” 5 & 7:30pm Friday

An original play by Brian Peoples, with an erotic poetry reading and solo gallery exhibit by local photographer Rick Allred, music and snacks. The play’s premise is of a woman encumbered by her hopeless husband, who attempts to litigate him anonymously with a pedophilia case in order to rid herself of her marital and moral obligations to him, whilst involving a paperboy in the malicious wrong-doing.

...at the Castle Theater, MACC - Directed by Pedro Almodovar Mainly a story revolving around two men and their tragic relationships with two remarkable women, this foreign flick removes itself from the tedium of subtitles and replaces it with a smooth layer of irony. It then becomes a film about the joy of narration and about words as a weapon against solitude, disease, death and madness. It is also a film about madness, about a type of madness so close to tenderness and common sense that it does not diverge from normality. Gorgeous!

DJ What? 10pm next Thursday, at Hapa’s in Kihei Yes, kids – it’s another Beat Junkies deal – aren’t we lucky? Eat it up, who knows when we’ll see the likes of such certifiable mixing genius. Rarely do I get excited about another damn DJ spinning, but these guys I can certainly vouch for. DJ What? has performed with funk bands, Jamaican artists (Junior P, Half Pint), hip-hop greats (Visionaries, Solar Panel), as well as with Tippa Irie, and the Long Beach Dub All Stars, and is currently the resident and partner of three clubs, carrying on the ever-versatile, always Beat Junkies Sound legacy.

Vagina Party 9pm Thursday, at Hapa’s in Kihei We at MTW believe there’s nothing like a little vodka and a whole lot of Vagina (Monologues, that is) to get the party started! That’s why, along with Hapa’s, we’re trying to spread the vivacity of TVM by hosting a sexy shindig featuring G-Spot Go Go Dancers, Give-Me-an-“Oh!” Giveaways, and naughty martini masterpieces, like the Twatini and Cuntini (I suppose Clitoris-de-Coco Cocktail, Fallopian Frappé, and Labia Lemonade just don’t have the same appeal, eh?!).

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY KOZMIC KEV

A MAN OF THE SLOTH

ARIES: Things are lightening up for you.

I've been living with this guy for three years, and it clearly isn't working anymore. Neither is he - working, that is. He isn't a complete loafer, but he brings in the mail, not an income. He does some stuff around the house, but both money and sex are nonexistent, and he's never gotten serious about looking for a job. I'm ready to say "Adios, amigo." Problem is, he's a decent guy: emotionally present, genuinely kind. How can I push Mr. Nice Guy out when he has no job, no money, and nowhere to go? -Vexed and Vacillating

Bloom where you are planted. Spend time writing poetry or journaling. Communication, transportation and basic information are among your primary concerns. Friends help you to keep a sense of balance. TAURUS: Divine love, luxury and leisure continue to follow you around. This is a good time for economic planning. You need to plant seeds Thursday through Saturday. These days are also good for fishing, water sports and getting pregnant. GEMINI: The breeze is blowing your name. The birds are singing your song. Your season is one of lyrics, jokes and tall tales. Respect other people’s taboos. Spiritual motivations are still strong. You'll be having déjà vu's and making karmic connections. CANCER: Find comfort in prayer and meditation. Wish good thoughts towards the people you don't like. Think of the worst tyrant as a baby in diapers that needs to be changed. It's easier to make psychic connections with animals. LEO: Even Kings and Queens need friends. Now is the time to hone in on your people pleasing skills. You're free to have good time buddies over to watch the playoffs. Applying creative resources at work will aid in keeping the peace. VIRGO: Exotic exploration leads to exotic occupations. Go somewhere on a whim or suggestion. Some things are better left to surprise. Romantic impulses are likely to be strongest over the weekend. Finish off courses and long distance correspondence. LIBRA: It's like you're graduating at the top of your class. Not only do you learn things, you learn them well. You need a vacation like you need fresh air. You are anxious for some deep romance. Sunday and Monday has you sharing, harmonizing and making agreements. SCORPIO: Being interested in sex shouldn’t carry a negative stigma any more than being interested in food. The subject is more on your mind than ever. The question is can you be honest enough with your fantasies to reveal them to someone that could turn them into realities? SAGITTARIUS: Come into the light. The easy-going "live and let live" attitude that you exude will include peacemaking through humor and enjoying evil twins. You'll travel best with a partner. Work on improving your self-image. CAPRICORN: Normally this is the "keep your nose to the grindstone" season for Capricorns. You're likely to be doing things with the family on the weekend. By Tuesday you'll be feeling the love. Express your gratitude through generosity and charitable acts. AQUARIUS: Somehow you escape sticky family situations and are able to get away from boring adults. You are now in the playpen of life. Even the most cerebral Aquarians need to feed at the trough of love. Go out and get your game on. PISCES: Finding contradictions among family members will be easy. Your memory and intuition have never been sharper. Thursday through Saturday features a Pisces moon. Get in the water or walk in the rain. Surprises keep on happening. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Bob Dylan 5/24/41, Pamela Grier 5/26/49, Joan Collins 5/23/33 kozmickev@sunset.net

"Parasite seeks new hostess"? He'll get right on it. Well, sometime. If only he weren't so busy bonding with the upholstery on your couch, he might find time to pore over the classifieds for a position that suits him: one in which the job description matches that of a throw pillow. To you, of course, he's more than some couch accessory. In fact, with those long, perilous treks to the mailbox and those work-like motions he occasionally makes with a feather duster, he's practically CEO of your couch. You can't complain that the guy's ambitionless. He's actively seeking to remain as inactive as possible. That's where the "decent guy" show comes in handy. Then again, maybe he really is "emotionally present" – except when the subject of his departure comes up, and he takes an emotional sick day. Regarding his being "genuinely kind," if only he'd be genuinely kind enough to blend into his native couch environment, much like those insects that look just like twigs, so you could start taking applications from potential new boyfriends. All he'd have to do is get a fullbody tattoo in bold florals or subtly-striped velour, whichever matches the pattern on your couch. If you date men with bad eyesight and keep the lights low, who's to say whether that's a should-be ex-boyfriend or a should-be exboyfriend-shaped throw pillow on your couch? Finally, in cataloging his many good qualities, you forgot to mention how practical he is. Why, indeed, would he go looking for a job, money, or an apartment? You already have all those things. Give the guy a two-week deadline to find another woman to sponge off - uh, get his life in order and get it out of your house. Whether his life is actually in order on the appointed day is unimportant; what matters is that it no longer remains in your house, and neither does he. Although it isn't your job to pack his stuff, since his stuff is unlikely to grow legs and hop into boxes, you'll probably have to do it anyway. Get a friend to help - someone beyond tired of advising you to scrape the giant barnacle off your hull. Make an appointment with a locksmith for "Barnacle Bye-Bye Day," which you might refer to in his presence as "The Day The Locks Will Change." This should let him know you're serious. It should, but it probably won't. Be prepared for him to continue modeling his behavior on that of natural-born upholstery, and be prepared to act accordingly: like a woman ready for a boyfriend who accompanies her to BED, BATH, AND BEYOND because he might buy something, not because he identifies with decorative objects designed to lie around the house.
