On its surface, the June 2 rules change proposal at the FCC is simply another big step toward allowing huge media conglomerates to swallow up more of the market. This is clearly a move away from diversity, against the spirit of free markets and competition, reducing consumer input and creating ever more opportunity for price fixing, monopolies and corrupt practices. More sinister, though, is that electronic communication, unlike the printing press and wire signals, is by nature limited - we cannot create more radio and TV spectrum the way we can buy a new press or lay more wire/fiber. Selling spectrum bandwidth with no guarantee of affordable transmission access for the rest of us is like allowing only the telephone company to make calls, while limiting everyone else to answering. In this analogy, if you were determined to make a phone call, the cost would be so high that you would have to sell commercials to pay for it - and if the phone company didn't like your message, they would have no obligation to carry it. With President Reagan's veto of the Fairness Doctrine, and the ever increasing loss of independent and minority voices from radio and TV, we are actually witnessing a critical undermining of democracy through the near absolute dominance of white, wealthy, corporate and largely neoconservative media control. On June 2, the FCC, under General Powell's son, is getting ready to increase the barriers keeping free speech out of mass electronic media. Please exercise what free speech you still can and contact Congress. - Daniel Grantham, Haiku

NEWS

In the May 15, 2003 issue you published a letter titled "Load of Crap" in which Brad and Neda Canton asked, "Who is this Margaret Kearney anyway?" and then went on to suggest she is a stupid, unathletic woman with no kayaking experience. Wrong. I am a professional educator, a woman who has run six marathons and competed in a variety of triathlons, including an Ironman. I am a woman with quite a bit of sea kayaking knowledge. In fact, I spent 32 days on a kayak trip in southern Alaska, as well as other trips in Florida, the outer banks of North Carolina and many whitewater trips. I am an accomplished outdoorswoman with a WFR (Wilderness First Responsder) certification. I also have been a sea kayaking instructor for three summers. So, I think that should clear up the misconceptions that Brad and Neda have about my lack of athletic ability and stupidity. I believe this will show them that they are the idiots for being so quick to judge when they know nothing about the situation. Yes, I read the waiver and was told the winds might pick up. However, I was told

to return to La Perouse instead of continuing north to Ahihi Bay. I was not encouraged to join a tour, however. I do believe that more instructions need to be given for the safety of those involved. As you can see, I have quite a bit of experience on the water. I am not here to shut down the kayak companies. I enjoy having them on our island for residents and visitors to enjoy. I believe the ocean is our greatest asset and we need to take advantage of that. However, people need to be given safety briefings to keep themselves safe from the inherent dangers that the ocean presents. - Margaret Kearney, Via Email

THE GREATER OF TWO EVILS I agree with Travis when he gives the Democrats in Texas a hard time for playing old-school hardball with the Republicans there. They should have figured something out before they abandoned their posts. He doesn't mention, however, how Republicans then used Homeland Security funds to track down the Democrats. These are our most vital funds at this time. These funds are being reduced with the new tax-cut that just passed. States are writing bad checks on a daily basis, every time the code changes from yellow to orange. These limited funds were used to further political motives. Who was the worse offender in this situation...? - Art Madison, Lahaina

LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE What can we do if our President lies to us? With Richard Nixon we used the highest law of the land, our Constitution, to impeach him. Impeachment is a remedy for abuse of power. George W. Bush lied to us. He said Iraq was a danger to us and began an illegal preemptive war. He is responsible for the unnecessary deaths of unknown thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians as well as the deaths of our own soldiers. He used the overwhelming power of our weapons of mass destruction and he did it, he said, because he feared a small army with few modern weapons thousands of miles from us. He is a dangerous and destructive tyrant who is tearing apart our bonds with the rest of the world. Our remedy is the impeachment of George W. Bush. - Sanchia V. Foiles, Wailuku

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.

STD’S 1. At what age do most persons become sexually active? 2. Have you ever been tested for a sexually transmitted disease? 3. Who, in your view, is most at risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease? (age group, socio-economic, race, gender, education, etc.) 4. Not one case of syphilis had been reported over the last 20 years in Hawaii. Recently, syphilis has reappeared and is now identified as one of the fastest growing STDs in the area. Why do you think that is? 5. What percentage of infected individuals does not know they have a sexually transmitted disease? 6. Do you think that people in Hawaii are responding to the STD problem with the respect it deserves? If yes, in what ways? 7. Do you practice unprotected sex? 8. How do you define “safe sex”?

DEAN WONG Director of HIV Prevention and Education Maui AIDS Foundation 1. Okay, let me clarify. Are you specifically talking about Maui? (We’re focusing on Maui.) Okay…according to national statistics - (No, according to what you think) - I think 14. 2. Ages 15-24. (Any other specifics on that?) Um…No, that age group is pretty inclusive of a sexually transmitted disease. 3. Why do I think that is? I think there is a stronger resurgence of people having unprotected sex. I think that the age group I mentioned is engaging more in unprotected sex because they define sex differently than other generations. For example, oral sex is not seen as sex amongst a younger age group. I also think that syphilis is so easily contractible that it can be transmitted via contact, very easy contact, so it doesn’t have to involve intercourse. Because syphilis can go unrecognized and a person can have syphilis without having symptoms, the people are transmitting the disease without even knowing that they have it. So all of those factors. 4. If you’re just talking about STDs, with most STDs, people will realize they have it because there are some symptoms that show up so actually that is very low but with some-

thing like syphilis, where you can have it and not have symptoms, that number is extremely high. It may be as high as 60 percent of people who could have syphilis and not know they have it. With HIV that number is also very high.

5. No. And I mean that on a state level, on a county level and on a community level. That I’d like to be very clear about. 6. No. 7. If you ask some people if they practice safe sex, they will say yes because they use condoms during vaginal or anal sex but they don’t use a condom when performing oral sex. It’s very different depending on who you ask.

“JESSICA” Sexually active 16-year-old Attends school in Hawaii 1. Most people around either the end of their freshman year or beginning of their sophomore year. So about 15. 2. Yes. 3. It’s not really any one specific genre of person. It’s more who’s more promiscuous, who doesn’t really use protection, who is less careful about what they do. 4. Well, it probably went from everybody being a little bit more careful, I think after the ‘60s people started being a little bit more careful, but then lately everyone has kind of gone back to a little bit of the feel of the ‘60s. Maybe more people from the mainland moving back to Hawaii and stuff is starting it a little bit more. 5. There are a lot of them. I just learned this in health class but I don’t remember the numbers. (Just ballpark…) Like 75 percent, I think. (How many of your friends have an STD that you know of?) None of them…that I know of. 6. Not really. I think people kind of ignore it. 7. No. 8. There isn’t really “safe sex” but you just have to be careful, like use birth control and condoms and just be really careful.

A lot of people just say ‘it’s an infection’ and try to treat it with over-the-counter medication, which is not correct. 5. About 80 percent. 6. No. 7. Yes. (Under what circumstances, if any do you feel it is okay to have unprotected sex?) None…Well, I guess there is, huh? It would be like if they’re married or if they’re going to be with their partner for a while. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES

A man escaped in February after robbing a Wienerschnitzel drive-thru in North Long Beach, Calif.; identifying him was difficult because he had smeared what appeared to be chocolate pudding over his face. And Edwin Lockhart, 48, had less success than that robbing a Sun Trust bank in Palatka, Fla., receiving a 10-year sentence in April; he was identified despite having stuck several sanitary napkins on his face.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN ACTION

Responding to a February incident in St. Clair Shores, Mich., in which a girl performed oral sex on a boy during a middle-school class (both were suspended), the superintendent and the principal wrote to parents: "Just like our country was shocked into awareness when never-before acts of terrorism occurred in New York City, our district was shocked into awareness when middleschool students engaged in indecent acts in the classroom." (The boy's parents filed a lawsuit over the suspension, pointing out that their son was a "victim" in that, when the girl started, he had no "legal duty" to resist.)

In May, a second Indian mayor, Amarnath Yadav of Gorakhpur, was removed from office because "he," a eunuch, had run as a female but was declared by a court to be just an effeminate male and thus ineligible to seek a femalereserved electoral office. Also in May, the South African Rugby Football Union fined its Golden Lions about US$4,000 for momentarily having only two black players on the field, when league rules require a minimum of three at all times.

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Convicted killer Roderick Ferrell, 23, asked for a new trial in March, telling a judge in Tavares, Fla., that he had an inadequate defense at his 1996 murder trial. Ferrell had admitted then that he was the leader of a teenaged, goth-outfitted "vampire clan" that often cut their arms open to suck each other's blood and which murdered the parents of one of its members. Ferrell told the

6

judge this time that he had been seeing a psychiatrist in 1996, whereupon the judge asked who had originally told him he needed help; Ferrell replied, "The school, the sheriff's office, my mom. Basically the whole city."

While two co-appellants chose to have lawyers represent them before the Supreme Court of Canada in their challenge of their marijuana convictions, David Malmo-Levine spoke for himself, addressing the justices for 40 minutes on May 6, arguing that his right of "substance orientation" was similar to someone's right of sexual orientation. After his session (which he began by waving hello to the justices), Malmo-Levine revealed that his entire courtroom wardrobe was made of hemp and that he had taken a few hits of hashish beforehand. Said he, "I was happy, hungry and relaxed, but I was not impaired."

MASTERS OF DISGUISE

READERS' CHOICE And in May, Microsoft's British division announced it was developing an Internetready portable outhouse with computer and plasma screen, to be unveiled this summer at various British festivals; Microsoft headquarters then told reporters the project was a hoax, but after consulting with the British division, headquarters conceded that it was a real project but said it was being discontinued.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS Tobacco Kills: A 72-year-old woman accidentally, fatally set herself on fire while filling her cigarette lighter (Somerville, Mass., February).

BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

A trucking company was ordered to pay a $2.7 million legal judgment because its only employee smoking area was across a 100-yard, poorly lighted parking lot, where a 55-year-old smoker was accidentally run over returning from a break (Pittsburgh, Pa., February). A 42-year-old man died of head injuries caused when he opened the door of a moving car to spit tobacco juice and fell out (Mineral Wells, W.Va., March).

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Government at War With Itself: The San Francisco Chronicle reported in March that local priest and accused child-molester Austin Peter Keegan was able to avoid arrest for six months largely through government funding (i.e., the Social Security Administration, which continued to pay his benefits until he was arrested in Mexico on March 1). And prosecu-

tors in Tampa urged a federal magistrate not to grant bail to accused terrorist supporter Sami al-Arian, on the grounds that if granted bail, he surely will flee the country; meanwhile, immigration authorities announced that they have begun the legal steps necessary, in the event alArian is granted bail, to deport him.

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ... Police chief Beverly Lennen instituted an advance-reservations system at the jail, to serve activists who wanted to be arrested protesting a visit by President Bush (Santa Fe, N.M.). The museum director who housed Marco Evaristti's installation, in which patrons were invited to turn on a live goldfishcontaining blender, was acquitted of animal cruelty charges because the two unlucky fish died instantly (Copenhagen, Denmark).

OPED

BY TED RALL

Operation Iraqi Eradication The Rise of a Bigger, Better Taliban WE TOLD YOU SO We warned the Bush Administration that invading Iraq would destabilize the Middle East and spread radical antiAmerican Islamism. We told the American people that taking out Saddam Hussein without a viable government to replace him would open a vacuum for anarchy, civil war and a power grab by radical Iranian-backed Shiite clerics. Now the antiwar movement's doomsday scenarios have been fulfilled so completely that military history scarcely mentions a more thoroughly botched endeavor--and we'll be living with the fallout for years. When we argued that Donald Rumsfeld's low-budget occupation of Iraq would turn out as disastrously as it had in Afghanistan, right-wing Republicans called us stupid and unAmerican. Now that we've been proven correct on every count, is it too much to expect an apology? Maybe so. Given George W. Bush's performance on the economy and the war on terrorism (where's Osama? Saddam? the WMDs? the surplus?), betting against him hardly makes one a prophet. And no one is less pleased with the speed and totality of the Iraqi catastrophe than those of us who called it in advance.

THE SLICING OF THE IRAQI MELON As I predicted last July, the war has

Waterproof Your Cell Phone

bloody civil wars and ethnic cleansing could sweep across Turkey to Eastern Europe and the Caucasus--potentially claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. But why dwell on the negative: It's two liberations for the price of one! Regrettably, free Kurdistan looks a lot like Taliban-controlled Afghanistan: women under wraps, blood feuds, medieval Islamism. "Kurdish political parties today are not that different from the tribes of the 18th century," notes David McDowall, author of "A Modern History of the Kurds." "You don't get democracy as an end product." And what's left of Iraq looks even worse.

meant the end of a unified Iraq and the beginning of chaos throughout the Middle East. The former northern "no-fly zone" is already openly referred to by Kurdish officials as the incipient Islamic Republic of Kurdistan. "It's etiquette, like a game," says Farhad Pirbal of Erbil University. "[Kurdish] politicians say what the Americans want to hear"--that they want to remain part of Iraq. But, he continues, "more than 80 percent of the people are for independence." Since Turkish reticence prompted the Pentagon to invade Iraq from the south, only small numbers of American forces entered the Kurdish zone, which has since remained under control of peshmerga guerillas. On May 23, U.S. and British occupation authorities formally endorsed the permanent partition of Iraq, setting the stage for Kurdish statehood. Even as U.S. civilian administrator Paul Bremer officially dissolved Iraq's armed forces, allied commander Lt. Gen. David McKiernan announced that the peshmerga would be allowed to keep its automatic weapons and heavy artillery—becoming Kurdistan's de facto army. A few days later, Kurdish leaders announced plans to continue expanding their territory. "Now we are back in Mosul," regional governor Nechirvan Barzani told The New York Times. "We control Senjar and Mosul provinces. We want to add the other parts of Kurdistan." The most significant "other part" lies across the Iraqi-Turkish border. If Turkish Kurds armed by their Iraqi counterparts fight to attach southeastern Turkey to Iraqi Kurdistan,

THE COMING SHIITE ISLAMIC REVOLUTION The Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) is angry that the U.S. has endorsed a Kurdish, but not a Shiite, army. "We will not accept that other militias will be allowed to stay there with their weapons while we will not be there with ours," says a spokesman for Ayatollah Muhammad Bakr alHakim, the leader of SCIRI who recently returned from exile in Iran. SCIRI and other Shiite groups are already using their weapons and demographics--60 percent of Iraqis are Shia Muslims--to transform Saddam Hussein's modern secular dictatorship into a fundamentalist Islamic state melding Iranian Shiaism to Taliban-style Sharia law. Incredibly, American occupation forces are working with, and even financing, these anti-American zealots. On May 2, influential Mullah Murtada

Sadr, son of an ayatollah famously murdered under Saddam, called for Sharia law in Iraq. "The banning of alcohol and the wearing of the veil should be spread to all and not only to Muslims," Sadr told followers in Kufa, near Najaf. "Alcohol and the display of a woman's body are forbidden for us Muslims, as they are for Christians, upon whom I call to give up these banned things." In Baghdad Imam Mohammed al-Fartussi upped the ante on May 16, threatening those who show "indecent films" and "sinful women" who consort with foreigners, especially Americans. "If in a week from now they do not change their attitude, the murder of these women is sanctioned (by Islam)," Fartussi raged. "This warning also goes out to sellers of alcohol, radios and televisions. The torching of cinemas would be permitted." Shiite militias that control Baghdad's vast Sadr City slum are already enforcing the mullahs' diktats. Sheik Kadhem al-Fartusi, who asserts that "Islam and all religions forbid alcohol," runs a local gang that beats liquor vendors and men who refuse to grow beards. "He's the primary shaker and mover here," U.S. Special Operations Maj. Arthur P. Vidal told The Times. Special ops troops pay Fartusi's religious police with "bricks of Iraqi dinars." Presidents Reagan and Bush I armed and funded similar men with identical religious and political beliefs in Afghanistan during the 1980s and 1990s. The result was Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, September 11, 2001. So why the hell are we doing it again? 2003 DaKine Classic Or, How Mother Nature Gets The Last Laugh

Aldo Tassara is standing on the sand at Kanaha Beach Park, gazing out at the gorgeous Maui sky and waves. He’s a local videographer, out to film this year’s DaKine Classic, the first big windsurfing competition of the Summer Race Series. “I went there to shoot video of a friend in the race and interview a model,” he said. “Mother Nature stopped me from shooting video, but allowed me to spend time with an interesting, beautiful woman.” Racers came from as far away as San Francisco and New Zealand to ride in the May 24 race, but it was for naught. Despite rigorous preparation by event organizers, the storm gods had other plans. The whole week before was windy and sunny, but race day on Saturday was chilly and calm.

The race was supposed to begin at 11:30. Spectators tried to make the best of it though. By one o’clock, calls of “beer-thirty” went out as coolers popped opened a little earlier than expected. Several racers exchanged their sugary energy drinks for more satisfying Steinlagers. Families read magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, and Island Living, talked about their golf games or just strolled down the beach. One guy attempted to teach his three-year-old daughter to windsurf not far from a middle-aged man trying to teach himself. “People tend to take everything for granted, but it really is a miracle if everything goes exactly as planned and there are perfect waves and wind,” said long-time windsurfer and would-be participant Jacques Pauvert. “That’s just the way nature goes, so we have to keep a positive philosophy and go with the

flow. Nature says ‘I’m the one who makes the rules.’ It is like when you meet a special girl and everything just flows, it doesn’t happen often so it is great when everything goes perfect. We windsurf to get beat up by nature and we just accept it. People never know when the good will come, so you learn to accept what happens in life.” Event organizers said they hope to reschedule the competition for June 1, assuming the storm gods agree. After that, five more races are left in the Series that will take place at Kanaha Beach Park every other Saturday until August 2, so Maui’s windsurfers will continue to come out ready to compete, or at least party a little. Lisa Loeb

Sharp tunes, pointy glasses & Ginsu knives By Christy Miles

W

hen the curtain slowly creeps up on June 8 at the McCoy Theatre, you won’t see a big band, back up dancers or bright, fiery lights. Instead, the vanishing of the curtain will commence an acoustic performance from the talented songwriter, Lisa Loeb. “It will be a very intimate night,” Loeb said. “It will feel more like a living room than a theatre.” This visit to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului will be Loeb’s first time performing on Maui. She will be promoting her new album, “Hello Lisa”. The title was constructed as an emulation of the Hello Kitty brand name of collectibles and clothing, which Loeb loves. This same source largely influenced the cover of her album. In addition to this being her Maui premiere, this is also her first acoustic tour. Prior to this tour, Loeb had performed acoustic sets throughout the country under other circumstances and she began to realize that the more she played acoustic, the more she enjoyed it. Loeb doesn’t improvise, per se, during the show but she said the feel of the show is improvisational. She says she is able to express herself freely as an artist through her stories. Loeb got her first break in 1994 when “Stay (I Missed You)”, a song that she wrote and performed, was included on the soundtrack to the motion picture “Reality Bites”. The song earned her a Grammy nomination and a Brit Award. At the time, she was the first and only artist not signed to a major label to earn such major accolades. Her debut album, “Tails”, which featured, “Stay (I Missed You)” was released in 1995. This album went gold and earned Loeb her second Grammy nomination. In 1997, Loeb released her second album, “Firecracker”. The single, “I Do” was a top 20 hit and earned Loeb yet another shot at a Grammy. She toured incessantly through both albums. When you think of Loeb, you may be reminded of her big glasses, her sleek look and her fingers strumming chords on her guitar. Behind it all is a very talented songwriter. Her previous albums contain songs that were written entirely by Loeb. Her last album is a collaborative effort with other songwriters. She said that working with other people was a great learning experience for her. Creating with other writers is like painting a picture, Loeb said. One writer will pick an amazing color that the other would never think to use. She also likens co-writing to the process involved with shooting a movie.

Dweezil Zappa. The festival is intended to help songwriters succeed in the business. It was a four-day event filled with profound teaching in and discussions about songwriting, a songwriting competition, concerts, open mic sessions and guitar pulls. Loeb performed each night as well as taught during the day. Loeb is very interested in the Hawaiian culture as well as the music. She is hoping to get some ukulele lessons in before the Maui show so that she can perform some songs on stage. Learning about more traditional art and artists is important to Loeb. It is a good idea as a musician to be influenced by different types of music other than just mainsteam. You will not see Loeb getting sucked into the pop/dance/shake your booty genre of music. She is all about her music and not the fame. “I feel like fame is more of a result of having success,” Loeb said. “I don’t have a goal to be famous. It’s just a result of playing music.” While growing up in Texas, Loeb was a dancer but she has no plans of ever incorporating the dance element into her music or performance. She does plan to take Hula lessons while she is in Hawaii. Her show on Maui will include informal storytelling through her music to add yet another element to her performance. She will take requests from the audience and Zappa will add an element of rock to the show. Local singer/songwriter and musician Gail Swanson will open for Loeb on Sunday, at the McCoy Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Tickets are limited, so call the box office at 242-SHOW quickly! MTW “We (the writers) would get to a certain stanza and I would say, ‘I want this to be factual or to be philosophical’ and the other writer would help me to discuss exactly what I was trying to say.” Since Loeb wrote with other songwriters, she feels that the songs have more clarity and listeners can better understand the stories behind them, as well as the focus of her music. Her inspirations and lyrics come from everywhere when she writes. Loeb is able to develop a song from her own experiences, things she reads and from words that she hears. While on a golfing trip on the island of Lana’i, Loeb ended up not golfing at all. Instead, she spent the majority of her time writing for her next album. What makes her new album different from her previous albums is the presence of multiple inputs and players in writing, production and expression of her music and also the variety of genres included. As we have estab-

lished, she co-wrote on this album instead of attacking the task completely on her own. She also worked with several producers in addition to undertaking production responsibilities herself. As a result, this effort is more extreme than her others. She combined acoustic, pop and rock on the album and the songs themselves are more extreme than her past products. In addition to touring in Japan, Europe and in the U.S., Loeb has been in the studio. In the television studio, that is. She has been working on a new television show for the Food Network with her boyfriend, Dweezil Zappa. It will integrate cooking, traveling and music in one show. Loeb will be the host and the show is going into production immediately. Last week, Loeb attended and taught writing seminars on Kaua’i for the Kaua’i Music Festival. It brought together writers such as Jeff Cohen, Hugh Prestwood and, logically,

KAMA`AINA NIGHT

Dive in headfirst!

Maui Beach Hotel A persistent wind curls through the lush landscape of Maui’s north shore and on through Kahului, cooling my beach battered skin and finding me in the mood for a few dozen stiff cocktails and a night of carousing with friends (it is Friday, after all). My hot dog lunch is already processed and forgotten, so I need a good, solid meal to give me that staying power through the wee hours of the evening. The Maui Beach Hotel is where I’m headed, where they line up heaping tables of all-you-can-eat, buffet style food seven nights a week. The restaurant is a short elevator ride up to the second floor. There’s open air dining on the poolside patio as well as enclosed seating near the bar and the buffet tables (I know where I’m sitting). My strategically chosen seat, like the rest of my surroundings, is comfortably functional. Tonight they’re offering a seafood lover’s buffet with lobster, seafood, prime rib and tempura. A big, steaming pile of King Crab legs sits near my position like a triumphant, barbaric altar, and though I swoon to their song I decide to remain civilized and start with a selection from the salad bar. A huge bowl of lettuce flanks smaller containers of standard salad veggies and dressings. Platters of rolled sushi, glistening rows of sashimi, crocks of kimchee, fruit, cheese, and peeland-eat shrimp complete the cold bar spread, and a liberal helping of all of the above should do nicely for a petite, predinner salad. Having properly started my meal I feel no qualms about diving headfirst into the main course. King Crab legs

with drawn butter, large, hacked-throughthe-shell chunks of lobster in sauce, lemon chicken, sautéed mixed vegetables, white rice, fried rice, and chow mein style noodles quickly fill my plate, posing a problem since I’m only halfway through the buffet line. Not to worry, gluttony is a marvelous motivator for creativity, and somehow I manage to squeeze on a slice of prime rib with au jus and horseradish, one each of the barbecued chicken and vegetable skewers, and some jumbo shrimp, eggplant, and sweet potato tempura. Only as I staggered back to my table did I notice the posted sign warning of an extra charge for uneaten food. I think I may be in trouble. Well, with a slow, methodical approach and some determination, I should be able to eat my way out of this problem. And eat through it I did, filling my gut near to bursting for only $25.00. This particular hedonistic feast is available Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays feature a Teppanyaki buffet ($25.00), Mondays are for meat lovers with all-you-can-eat Shabu Shabu (thinly sliced beef cooked in hot broth with peanut and ponzu sauce) and Hand Roll sushi ($23.00), Tuesdays and Wednesdays offer sushi and Japanese buffet ($23.00), and Thursdays are for crab leg lovers (along with lovers of prime rib, seafood, and chef’s specials for $34.00). Children between the ages of five and ten get in for reduced prices. The Maui Beach Hotel, like the cool northerly winds that sweep through its grounds, is a refreshing change of pace with a low frills, all about the food kind of approach. And I was able to cut my swath of gluttonous destruction in just over thirty minutes, with plenty of time to meet my friends for my anticipated night of revelry. Now if I could just squeeze in a drink. . . MTW

WINE OF THE

WEEK

BY ANTHONY MOORE

2001 Regaleali BIANCO

TASCA D'ALMERITA, $13.99 ˜ Sicily hangs off the southwest tip of the

boot of Italy and is home to some of the most ancient hanging vine areas in the region dating back as far as five centuries before Christ. As Italy’s largest region, Sicily originally focused on mass quantity production rather than high-quality wines. Until recently, Sicilian wines were not viewed with any type of esteem but of late, efforts have been made to offer a list of more respected labels. The winery estate of Tasca D'Almerita known as Regaleali, has been one of the leaders in this movement. The estate also boasts a culinary school, which was one of the institutions that pioneered the practice of bringing Americans to Italy in efforts to better their knowledge of Italian cuisine and wine. Beneficiaries of their program, or ones like it, include Alice Waters and Julia Childs. Their Bianco, made from a blend of pure Italian varietals (Inzolia, Sauvignon-Tasca and Cataprato as we know them) is a clean and clear, refreshing wine that is vinified in stainless steel tanks for about six months. It is a youthful white with an aroma of green apple and bananas and a refreshing, crisp taste that has a surprisingly creamytextured finish. Try this great white with your next backyard BBQ - enjoy! Gemini Love Those schizophrenic, gregarious Geminis are having themselves a party 10pm Friday @ Casanova DJ Daniel J is spinning and gathering his fellow Geminis in order to enjoy “Gemini Rising”, with DJ Preston’s (San Francisco) Stompy Stomp expertise, DJ Veronica’s (#1 DJ in Vancouver) eclectic & sexy house beats, and lotsa love for all you evil twins. Being a Gemini also gets you in the door for free, special presents throughout the evening, and the first 100 in get a free, mixed CD. Those late-May/June babies are so damn generous! You just have to catch them before they change their minds. Happy Birthday, Daniel!

Trevor Jones Keepin’ it real with T-Jo 2-4pm Sundays at Maui Brews You know, as a woman, I’ve always dreamt of the day that some manly musician would croon to me a song in my honor...something about my inherent intelligence or subtle beauty, my amazing wit or overwhelming charm. Never did I imagine as I got caught up in the reverie of an all-out bar anthem to “the lipstick in Sam’s teeth” would it be happening amongst beer and whiskey-swillin’ regulars at Maui Brews on a Sunday (oh, the sacrilege), belted out with sweetness by the irreconcilably entertaining Mr. Jones. Without a doubt, he made doing something “cheap and meaningless” so much fun. By engaging his crowd in alternately drinking and/or church-going songs, he encourages the act of “doing something we’ll regret later”...I just love him! This might be more fun than you’ll know what to do with, but don’t worry, you’ll learn the words as you go along (or, at least, you’ll fake it real good as the beers flow!).

Forget Cannes We do it better on Maui, alright?! June 11-15, Maui Film Festival at Wailea This year’s Maui Film Festival at Wailea is like a soft breeze blowing through the caverns of my soul. Films that matter, people that know, places that inspire – it all adds up to beauty, truth, art, love and life: all the “little things” that fill our hearts, expand our minds and make our seemingly trivial experiences suddenly significant, poignant even. All pomposity aside, what I’m trying to say is that the MFF is a truly wondrous experience - it almost doesn’t even matter what the films are ‘cause the venues are so spectacular (I said almost, Barry)! You’re outside, under the stars, toes in the sand, oceanside... or in a beautiful theater with the best sound and screen quality and no mildew stench... and then, yes, of course, the films are handpicked by Film Guru Barry Rivers and his team, and are likely to be your future favorites for years to come.

Happy B-day, Marty! Reggae celebration with a little help from his friends Saturday night @ Maui Brews Apparently, Geminis throw the best parties! For several years, Marty Dread has graced Maui with his music and aloha spirit. He is not only THE reggae master on Maui, but he’s also just charismatic as all hell and has many friends – most of them being quite talented, fortunately for us. You might recognize some of them: Oshen, Katchafire, Chief Ragga, Nara Boone, Hawaiian Homeboy, Teomon, and Bula’ia. They’ll all be there, along with Marty, and a rasta pinata, cake ceremony, prizes and giveaways. Being the ultimate host that he is, Marty will be sure to include you in his iriealoha reverie – but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get his spankings too, right?!

To describe to those who have never heard what the Deftones sound like, I surmised this example: Being trapped in a little boat in the middle of a huge storm with a rather off-key singer wailing and rocking the boat at the same time, in slow motion. Or, in other words, emo metal. Make no mistake, the Deftones have been trendsetters for this style of music and at the same time, been the inadvertent masterminds to the whole "screamo" nonsense, but always managed to stay a step ahead of the class for no other reason short of being far more unique. However, even with that said, they don't seem to push themselves outwardly enough. This record sounds like their past records and more of the same isn't always the welcome choice of expression, especially the fourth time out of the gate. This wouldn't be a bad choice but you may have heard this quite a bit already. -Maverick Records

LAGWAGON "BLAZE" If you are a Lagwagon fan, then I couldn't possibly sway you from this record, but Lagwagon still continue to show how vastly overrated they are. Joey Cape has a nice sense of melody, alright, but his two-dimensional voice give the songs no depth and the rest of the band are so talented for the music they play, they seem to give you this condescending feeling that they're “slumming it”. Not to mention the fact that the lines that separate this and Bad Astronaut (Joey Cape's side project) are starting to get blurry. I don't mean to be so viciously against this band but I thought we'd be past this kind of crap already. Fat Wreck Chords

LESS THAN JAKE "ANTHEM" Less Than Jake has always been good at one thing: Cover songs. Their original material has always been two shades better than mediocre, which is sad because they have such an awesome chemistry and energy as a band. They emerged as a punk/ska band and they are at their best doing uptempo party music, so it's a rather odd choice to call their new album something it falls short on. They're not a band to be taken too seriously and they don't need to be. I would recommend this album, but only if you already have Operation Ivy's "Hectic" to see how this stuff really works. Oh, and by the way, beau coup kudos for the awesome cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender". -Sire Records

For punk fans new and old, they always know they can depend on Epitaph's series of samplers to deliver, and for six or seven bucks and two discs worth of material, it surely does. This time it's not limited to solely punk music. Sure they still have solid old-school mainstays like Guttermouth, US Bombs, Bad Religion, Pennywise and NOFX (sorry to you cats who actually are old-school but these guys are officially oldschool now. Blame the kids), but Epitaph shows interest in Blues with The Black Keys and Hip Hop with Sage Francis and Atmosphere. Of course, there's always unreleased material for you on these things but the only thing to really pony up for are two new awesome Bad Religion songs. -Epitaph Records

HOT HOT HEAT "MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN" All these garage rock acts coming out right now should put a compilation out and call it "Backwards Music for Forward People". I kid. On the first listen you might think these guys are just riding on the coattails of The Strokes due to their rather face value similarities but when you pick them apart, you hear far more influences than just The Velvet Underground. You'll hear The Who, early Bowie, Devo, The Police and.... Lou Reed. Heh. If you ask me this is certainly better than the new White Stripes album but I don't like The White Stripes so don't ask me. Just buy this record, you'll like it. I promise. -Sub Pop Records Gannon Gilmore is the publisher and co-author of the independent fanzine Scumbag Tulip, as well as a member of the sometimes-fictitious punk band, The Crowd. To order back or current issues of Scumbag Tulip, please send $1 (per issue) to P.O. Box 330062, Kahului, HI 96732.

ADVICEGODDESS KOZMICBREEZE BY AMY ALKON

WOMEN TOO AMAZING TO HAVE BOYFRIENDS According to what men say they want in a woman, I'm in the ballpark. I'm 33, happy and independent, with a cool job that pays me well. I'm in good shape (yoga and blading) and people besides my grandma call me "pretty." I don't think I want something unattainable - just a goodhearted, fun guy who's got his life together, who doesn't spend his free time parked in front of the TV. He doesn't have to be a model-type, either. I care more about whether a guy reads the newspaper than whether he's losing his hair. So, why can't I find a boyfriend? And why are so many of my female friends in the same boat? These are attractive, accomplished women who, like me, get told they're "too much" by guys they date. It seems that petty, unreasonable, possessive gold-diggers land all the guys. Is there hope for the rest of us? – Boyfriend Repellant What men want in a woman and what they say they want - apart from breasts big enough to divert advertising from the Goodyear blimp and a waist like a Number Two pencil - can be two entirely different things. Never underestimate the allure of a mean, bitter, controlling woman with a mountain range of issues. She keeps a man on his feet - ready, at any moment, to duck an ashtray hurled at him. Between ducking airborne objects, he's ducking his own issues, which is probably the point. Little men need littler women. For the man who feels crumb-like, the ideal girlfriend has much in common with a premature kitten. Such helpless kitties are frequently unemployed due to their inability to operate technically sophisticated office equipment - such as light switches, bulldog clips, and ballpoint pens. Assuming you aren't smelly, desperately irritating, or otherwise objectionable, your problem is that you don't have problems. Like a self-cleaning oven, you're a self-rescuing woman - a damsel imminently capable of extricating herself from distress with checking overdraft protection, a rereading of the directions on her power screwdriver, or one phone call to 24-hour roadside assistance. (You have no idea how unattractive all this self-sufficiency can be to so many men.) Luckily, you don't need "so many men" - just one actual man. You're seeking something more subtle - a man completely comfortable with who he is and what he does. He's the guy who won't feel like a ground squirrel next to a woman who doesn't need him to make her happy, but wants him to stick around because he makes her happier. Should you find a real man, give him space to play the man role. Avoid the temptation to re-enact the part of General Sherman marching to the sea - barking orders and constantly court-martialing him for being "wrong." This won't mark you as "un-feminist" or unable to function on your own. It instead suggests that you're strong enough to stop being in charge of the entire universe for 20 minutes, and that you're likely to respond to his opening a door for you by thanking him, not by slugging him in the mouth. Also, it's sexy for girls to be girls and boys to be boys. It sure beats the alternatives - taking Vindictive Shrew Lessons or practicing being fed your meals, preemie kitty-style, out of an eyedropper.

CLASSIFIED

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: Energy and vitality is on the rise. You're focused on work and improving your material life. Do something to help someone else. Your relationship to others is crucial when it comes to asking for their cooperation and support. TAURUS: This is the last week for you to bask in the sensual love of Venus in Taurus. You'll be more focused on your economic status. Dietary habits may need some modification. Being direct about what you want is likely to produce results. GEMINI: Being your own crazy self will be more comfortable for you. Be nice to your relatives over the weekend. Sunday and Monday will be good for games, love affairs, and creative pursuits. A series of pleasant shifts in your condition will take place. CANCER: Welcome new responsibilities. Accept the fact that none of us is getting any younger. Find friends that love you for who you are. Use your emotions and memories to guide you through your artistic pursuits. LEO: You are shining so brightly that people need shades to look at you. Friendly encounters will be on the increase. Put the finishing touches on creative projects that involve your career. Finding a spiritual discipline that suits you is your next task. VIRGO: Your love of travel and cultural experiences will lead you to more fulfilling career opportunities. Find new music that you normally don't listen to. Friday and Saturday feature a Virgo moon. Detail work and organizing stuff is easier under this influence. LIBRA: Trust your intellect. You move from extra sensory perceptions to educated hypothesis. Allow yourself time to travel, study and to deepen your knowledge. You’re luckier than you think. If there ever was a time where risktaking was called for, now is that time. SCORPIO: Delight in life’s simple pleasures. Any effort you make to create peace and understanding will work better than expected. Be patient. Accept refusals with grace. Other people are likely to help you or come to your aid. SAGITTARIUS: Your laughter is contagious. Let us in on your secret to joyful living. You are able to get away with things that no one else could. Compliments will get you everywhere. Cut down on the substance abuse, not just drugs and alcohol, but sugar, caffeine and flour as well. CAPRICORN: Things continue to go your way. Everybody knows you’re an asset to the community. Hard work is easier when you employ others to share the load. Consistency and reliability in your relationships helps. Emoting with others is a challenge. AQUARIUS: Occasionally it's good to hide in your work, play with your toys and create some new gadgets. Take a break to play with the kids and engage in some extreme sports. Drink plenty of water and take time to eat right. PISCES: Share your dreams with us. Our ears are open and we are listening. You're a combination of extreme genius, mixed with cave woman/man, with a touch of the magician. Seek the wisdom of your elders and the strength of your ancestors. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Prince 6/5/58, Joe Montana 6/11/56, Bill Moyers 6/5/34 kozmickev@sunset.net
